If, then, you are unwilling to understand these things in this way, given that three notions lie before us — illusion, blasphemy, and truth — which would you choose? For by supposing that what was said was said in mere appearance, the things that happened would also be reckoned as illusion.
1:226
但若這是按真實所說,而主的魂卻完全與自己的理解疏離——以神、即道為其心智——那麼設想那不可改變者竟轉為憂愁、惶恐、煩亂,便是不敬虔的;
But if it was spoken in truth, and yet the soul of the Lord had become wholly estranged from its own understanding — having God the Logos as its mind — then to conceive that the unchangeable was turned into grief, distress, and trouble is impious;
1:227
縱使福音書說耶穌心裡憂愁;
even though the Gospels say that Jesus was troubled in spirit;
1:228
but the Lord shows his own mind, having said:
1:229
If indeed the Lord displays the understanding of his own soul, it is for sympathy with our soul, so that we may thus understand that the suffering, too, was his own, and yet confess him to be impassible.
1:230
For just as by the blood of his flesh he redeemed us, so too by the understanding of his soul he displays the victory on our behalf, saying:
1:231
但正如敬虔的人不會像不信的人那樣,將〔那〕血視為尋常之物,而是視為施行拯救的;
But just as the blood would not be understood by the pious as common, as it is by unbelievers, but as saving;
1:232
so too the understanding here spoken of is not encompassed by human weakness, but displays the nature of God.
1:233
如此便可以說基督是完全的神,也是完全的人;
And thus Christ might be said to be perfect God and perfect man;
1:234
並非彷彿神性的完全被轉變成了人性的完全,那是不敬虔的;
not as though the divine perfection had been transformed into human perfection, which is impious;
1:235
也並非彷彿承認了按劃分而有的兩種完全,那是與敬虔相悖的;
nor indeed as though two perfections were confessed according to division, which is alien to piety;
1:236
nor according to progress in virtue and the acquisition of righteousness — far be it!
1:237
而是按毫無缺損的存在而言;
but according to an undiminished existence;
1:238
so that he might be one in both respects, perfect in all things, the very same being God and man.
1:239
"Now my soul is troubled, and it is in anguish."
1:240
And "now" means: when he willed it.
1:241
然而祂所顯明的,乃是真實存在的事;
Nevertheless, he was displaying what truly was;
1:242
因為祂並非把不存在的事說成彷彿存在,好像所發生的事只是按幻象而說的;
for he did not name as present that which was not real, as though the things that happened were spoken of in mere appearance;
1:243
for all things came to pass by nature and in truth.
1:244
因為在我們的本性裡,關於罪之發明的爭戰仍在進行,且因我們的軟弱,對那被撒種於〔我們裡面〕的仍有所順從;
For in our nature the struggle over sin's invention still continues, and there is a yielding to what is sown upon us, because of our weakness;
1:245
但道的成肉身,既是按神的本性而發生,就變得不能接納那些從我們舊〔本性〕而來、仍在我們裡面運行的事物;
but the enfleshment of the Logos, having come to be according to the nature of God, became incapable of admitting those things which, from our old nature, still operate within us;
1:246
and for this reason we are taught to put off the old man and put on the new.
1:247
而奇妙就在於此:主成為了人,卻沒有罪;
And in this is the marvel: that the Lord became man, and yet without sin;
1:248
because he became wholly newness, so that he might show forth his power.
1:249
And whatever things he himself, in willing it, ordained for his nature, he took up into himself — as many as he willed: that is, birth from a woman, growth in stature, the passing of years, weariness, hunger, thirst, sleep, grief, death, and resurrection.
1:250
〔好使〕祂按著人性成為那不被死亡所拘禁的,並按著神性解除死亡的轄制;
so that, as man, he might be the one not held fast by death, and, as God, might loose the dominion of death;
1:251
好叫那朽壞被撒種之處,不朽壞得以由此發出;
so that where corruption was sown, there incorruption might spring up;
1:252
且死亡在人魂的形式中作王之處,那不死的〔主〕親自臨在,得以顯明不死;
and where death reigned in the form of a human soul, the immortal one, being present, might display immortality;
1:253
並如此使我們在對死人復活的盼望中,成為祂自己不朽壞與不死的有分者;
and thus might make us partakers of his own incorruption and immortality, in the hope of the resurrection from the dead;
1:254
so that this corruptible might put on incorruption, and this mortal might put on immortality, as it is written:
1:255
"so that, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and through sin death, so also through one man, Jesus Christ, grace might reign through righteousness unto eternal life," as it is written.
1:256
那麼你們怎能說:「取代了我們裡面那內在的人,在基督裡乃是屬天的心智」呢?豈不是祂把外在與內在一分為二,既在墳墓中、又在陰間顯明了自己嗎?然而,用一物代替另一物作贖價是不可能的;
How then do you say, "Instead of the inner man that is within us, there was a heavenly mind in Christ"? Was it not rather that, having divided the outer and the inner in two, he displayed himself both in the tomb and in Hades? But it was not possible to give one thing in exchange as a ransom for another;
1:257
而是祂以身體換身體、以魂換魂,並以完全的存在代替了全人;
but he gave body for body, and soul for soul, and a complete existence on behalf of the whole man;
1:258
this is the exchange wrought by Christ, which the Jews, enemies of life, reviled upon the cross as they passed by, shaking their heads.
1:259
因為陰間根本無法承受那毫無遮蔽之神性的臨入;
For Hades could not have endured the unveiled entrance of the Godhead;
1:260
to this both the prophets and the apostles testify.
1:261
從十字架的救贖安排中,也可以看出方才所說的道理;
It is also possible to perceive what has been said in the economy of the cross;
1:262
主如何藉著血的流出,顯明了肉身的真實;
how the Lord, by the shedding of blood, displayed the reality of the flesh;
1:263
又藉著水的加添,顯明了那無玷的潔淨,並顯明那身體乃是神的身體;
and by the addition of water, he showed the undefiled purity, and that the body was God's own;
1:264
祂大聲呼喊、垂下頭來、交出了靈,藉此指明了自己身體裡面的部分,也就是魂;
and having cried out, and bowed his head, and given up his spirit, he signified the inner part of his own body, that is, the soul;
1:265
concerning which he had also said, "I lay down my life for my sheep."
1:266
So that no one could call the expiring of breath a departure of the Godhead, but a withdrawal of the soul.
1:267
For if death, and the mortification of the body, came about through a departure of the Godhead, then he died his own peculiar death, and not ours.
1:268
And how did he descend into Hades with the Godhead unveiled? Where then is the soul which the Lord promised to lay down for the sheep, concerning which the prophets also foretold? But if a withdrawal of the soul took place, it is for this reason said that he took up our own death, that is, having submitted to the dissolution proper to us, just as also to birth.
1:269
因此,你們的詭辯是徒然的;
Vain, then, is your sophistry;
1:270
因為若非道為自己構成了內在與外在,也就是身體與魂,死亡又怎能發生呢?祂又怎能替全人付出贖價作交換呢?又或者,若基督沒有在自己裡面構成那按自己理解而犯了罪的魂——使其無罪——死亡的轄制又怎能得著完全的廢除呢?那樣,死亡便仍舊轄制著那內在的人;
since how could death have come about, unless the Logos had constituted for himself both the inner and the outer, that is, body and soul? And how would he have given a ransom in exchange on behalf of the whole? Or how would the dominion of death have received its complete undoing, if Christ had not constituted within himself, sinless, the soul — that which had sinned according to its own understanding? Then death still reigns over the inner man;
1:271
for over what else did it ever reign, if not over the soul that sinned in its understanding? As it is said:
1:272
"The soul that sins, it shall die;"
1:273
on behalf of which Christ laid down his own soul, giving it in exchange as a ransom.
1:274
那麼神從起初所定罪的,究竟是什麼呢?是那塑造者所塑造的形體,還是被塑造者的行為呢?若神定罪的是那塑造者所塑造的形體,祂便是定了自己的罪;
And what, from the beginning, did God condemn? The formation made by the Former, or the deed of the thing formed? If God condemned the formation made by the Former, he condemned himself;
1:275
但若如此設想神是不敬虔的,那祂所定罪的就是被塑造者的行為;因此祂除去了那行為,並使那受造的形體更新;
but if it is impious to think this of God, then he condemned the deed of the thing formed; he therefore takes away the deed, and makes new the formation;
1:276
for we are his workmanship, created for good works.
1:277
We call him who was of Mary, God.
1:278
How then do you say, like Marcion, that God "sojourned" among us, and that God came near without truly touching human flesh, having a nature incapable of receiving human flesh? Or how do you speak of God, as does Paul of Samosata? For this is the pretense of that man's impiety: to confess that the one from Mary is God, foreordained indeed before the ages, but having had the beginning of his existence from Mary.
1:279
但他所承認的,是一位從天而來、發揮作用的道,以及在他裡面的智慧——按著自己不敬虔的說法,他所讓步承認的,甚至比你們還多;
But he confesses an active Word from heaven, and wisdom in him — granting more than you do, according to his own impiety;
1:280
just as you say there is a heavenly mind in an ensouled body.
1:281
But neither is an ensouled body already a complete human being, nor is a heavenly mind already God.
1:282
For a body is called "ensouled" when upon it the name of "soul" is borne in a really subsisting manner.
1:283
人的身體被稱為「身體」,而非「魂」;
But the body of a human being is called "body," and not "soul";
1:284
and the soul of a human being is called "soul," and not "body," the one being distinct from the other, that is, spirit as distinct from body.
1:285
But "who," it says, "has known the mind of the Lord?" The mind of the Lord is not yet the Lord, but the Lord's will, or counsel, or activity directed toward something.
1:286
你們怎能想出這些話來,用捏造的言辭販賣神的道呢?然而神的教會既未如此領受,也未如此傳授;
How then do you contrive to say these things, peddling the Word of God with fabricated words? But the Church of God has neither received it so, nor handed it down so;
1:287
but, as it is written, [it has received and handed down] God the Word, who was with God before the ages, having come to dwell among us at the completion of the ages, and having been born of the holy Virgin and of the Holy Spirit as the Son of Man, as it is written:
1:288
「直到她生了她頭生的兒子」;
"until she had borne her firstborn Son";
1:289
使他在許多弟兄中成為長子,他自己乃是真神;
so that he might become firstborn among many brethren, he himself being true God;
1:290
so that he might also suffer on our behalf, as a human being, and redeem us from suffering and death, as God.
1:291
You imagine in vain, then — supposing that, because that which thinks and governs the flesh is already present in yourselves, you are able to work out this newness through imitation —
1:292
卻不明白,模仿乃是對一件先在之實事的模仿;
not understanding that imitation comes about as the imitation of a reality that precedes it;
1:293
since otherwise it could not be called imitation.
1:294
But in confessing in Christ a newness of the flesh alone, you err and blaspheme.
1:295
For if it were possible for human beings, through that which governs the flesh, to work out this newness for themselves apart from Christ — and that which is led indeed follows that which leads —
1:296
what need was there of Christ's coming? Vain too are those who say that the Word came to dwell upon one of the prophets.
1:297
"If the Son shall make you free, you will be free indeed" — is this not in accordance with the newness that is in him, and the perfection through which we too, who have believed, are renewed, by imitation of and participation in the perfect newness of Christ? But you have devised everything, so that you might construct a single doctrine of denial.
1:298
你們對「魂」則加以曲解重述,時而稱之為狂亂之心智,時而稱之為實存之罪,時而稱之為罪的執行者,藉此將它排除在外;
And the soul — by reinterpretation, calling it now a deranged mind, now sin subsisting in its own reality, now the very agent of sin — you thrust out;
1:299
and the flesh, now as uncreated, now as heavenly, now as consubstantial with the Word, so that you might confirm for yourselves a complete denial.
1:300
正如亞流,從那論及子由父所生、既不可言喻又至為真實之生的信仰上滑跌,預先捏造出苦難、割裂與流溢;
And just as Arius, having slipped away from the faith concerning the ineffable and most true begetting of the Son from the Father, invented beforehand suffering, division, and flux;
1:301
為要藉這些不虔的言辭,將那些不堅定的人推落到不法的坑中;
so that through impious words he might cast the unsteadfast down into the pit of lawlessness;
1:302
因為「不法之人的口乃是深坑」;
for "a deep pit is the mouth of the lawless";
1:303
so again, likewise, Sabellius, having conceived the Son as without hypostasis, and the Holy Spirit as without real existence,
1:304
指控〔正統信仰〕使神性分裂、使本原眾多、使諸神數目增加,其實自己正立足於猶太人的見解;
accusing [the orthodox faith] of dividing the Godhead, and of a plurality of principles, and a numbering of gods, is himself established in the Jewish opinion;
1:305
In the same way you also, slandering, say that we speak of two Sons, and you call us man-worshippers, or in turn bring the charge of sin against us — not that you might act piously, but that you might make your error appear plausible by evil inventions, and turn the unsteadfast aside from the faith by your impious words.
1:306
Yet the firm foundation of God stands, having this seal:
1:307
縱然本無需再多寫什麼;
even though there was really no need to write anything more;
1:308
因為福音的傳承已經足夠;
for the evangelical tradition is sufficient;
1:309
but since you asked concerning the faith that is among us, and indeed for the sake of those who wish to wrangle with their own inventions, and who do not consider that "he who speaks from his own resources speaks a lie" —
1:310
因為基督身體的美麗與榮耀,人的心思根本無法道盡;
For neither the beauty nor the glory of the body of Christ is attainable for the mind of man to declare;
1:311
[yet we offer] the glory and confession of his loving-kindness toward humanity, and the hope of our salvation, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1:312
Let those who do not confess our Lord Jesus Christ to be one, out of God and man, as it is written in the Gospel, "of Adam, of God" — let them say how they have understood the one who, existing in the form of God, is God, and yet took the form of a servant; or how they have understood the saying, "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us."
1:313
For he who said that "the Word became flesh" also said that "he himself gave his soul on our behalf."
1:314
Is it then as though the Word underwent a change into a transformation of flesh, or a mere likeness of soul —
1:315
or as though he made a merely illusory display of the human form, as the other heretics erroneously say? But the Apostle does not allow this, having clearly said, "being who, he took what."
1:316
正如「神的形像」被理解為道之神性的滿盈;
For just as "the form of God" is understood as the fullness of the Word's divinity;
1:317
同樣,「奴僕的形像」也被承認為人之構成中具心智的本性,連同其身體的狀態;
so also "the form of a servant" is confessed as the mind-endowed nature of human constitution, together with its bodily condition;
1:318
使「原是」一詞被理解為指道,「成了」一詞則被承認為指肉身連同魂;
so that "he was" may be understood as referring to the Word, and "he became" may be confessed as referring to the flesh together with the soul;
1:319
which is called "the form of a servant," being understood as a certain mind-endowed constitution.
1:320
Whence Paul bears witness to the mind-endowed nature, while John bears witness to the bodily manifestation of the body, so that each of them might proclaim the whole mystery of the economy.
1:321
所以「基督」這名並非撇開肉身而單獨使用;
Therefore the name "Christ" is not applied apart from the flesh;
1:322
since suffering and death follow upon the name, as Paul writes:
1:323
「基督若是能受苦的,若他是死人中首先復活的」;
"if Christ is subject to suffering, if he is first of the resurrection of the dead";
1:324
「我們逾越節的羔羊基督已經被殺獻祭」;
"Christ our Passover has been sacrificed";
1:325
and that "the man Christ Jesus gave himself as a ransom on our behalf."
1:326
Not that Christ is not God, but that Christ is also a human being.
1:327
And for this reason Scripture applies both names, in demonstration of his real existence;
1:328
神以不可見的方式被理解,卻真實存在;人以可見的方式被觸摸,也真實存在;
God being understood invisibly, yet truly existing; man being touched visibly, and truly existing;
1:329
這並非位格或名稱上的分割,而是出於自然的誕生與不可分解的聯合;
not in a division of persons or of names, but in a natural birth and an indissoluble union;
1:330
so that, the suffering being truly confessed in him, the same one may be truly and jointly confessed to be both passible and impassible.
1:331
那麼,身為神的道,如何在成為人之前就已是基督呢?因為若「基督」這名是神性所獨有、撇開肉身而言的,那麼這名也必須用在父與聖靈身上;
How then did the Word, being God, become Christ before he became man? For if the name "Christ" belongs properly to the Godhead apart from flesh, then it must also be applied to the Father and to the Holy Spirit;
1:332
and the suffering will also be common to all, as some who have erred say.
1:333
Ἢ καὶ.
或者你們也要說,那不能受苦、無形無質的神、道,在成為肉身、成為人之前,本來就能夠承受苦難與死亡嗎?那與父同質、按神性而言不可分割的子,若非從童貞女的母腹中親自取了人之構成的整個形相、成為人,又怎能被稱為能受苦呢?他既是不可變易、不可更改的;
Or will you also say that God the Word himself, impassible and incorporeal, was capable of suffering and death even before the incarnation and the becoming human? And how could the Son, who is consubstantial with the Father and undivided according to the divine nature, be called passible — being unchangeable and immutable — unless, having taken from the womb of the Virgin the whole form of human constitution into himself, he became man;
1:334
he became man, not as though God needed anointing, nor again as though the anointing came about apart from God, but with God bestowing the anointing, and [the anointing] being received in the body that is capable of receiving it.
1:335
由此顯而易見,道成為基督並非撇開人的肉身,並非把自己分割成只是肉身的顯現,或只是魂的仿似;
It is therefore evident that the Word did not become Christ apart from human flesh, dividing himself into a mere display of flesh, or a mere likeness of soul;
1:336
but remaining what he was, he took the form of a servant — a form not lacking the reality made manifest in its display, through the suffering, the resurrection, and the whole economy, as it is written and has been shown.
1:337
那麼,請你們說說,你們是如何以為神在拿撒勒出生的呢?因為所有異端者都慣於這樣說,就如撒摩撒他的保羅承認神出於童貞女,神從拿撒勒顯現,並從此開始了他存在的起頭,也自此領受了國度的開端;
Tell us, then, how have you supposed God to have come into being in Nazareth? For indeed all heretics are accustomed to say this: as Paul of Samosata confesses God from the Virgin, God appearing from Nazareth, and from that point having the beginning of his existence, and receiving the beginning of a kingdom;
1:338
而他承認有一位從天而來、發揮作用的道,以及在他裡面的智慧;
and he confesses an active Word from heaven, and wisdom in him;
1:339
這道就預定而言在萬世之前已然存在,就實際存在而言則是從拿撒勒才顯明出來的;
existing, by foreordination, before the ages, but manifested, in actual existence, from Nazareth;
1:340
so that, he says, the one God over all may be the Father alone.
1:341
But Marcion and Mani say that God came to dwell in the Virgin, and passed through untouched, and was incapable of communing with human nature — that nature which has fallen under sin, and is subject to the ruler of wickedness —
1:342
因為若他真的取了這人性,他也必服在惡之首領之下,基督便不會是無罪的了;
for if he had taken up this nature, he too would be subject to the ruler of wickedness, and Christ would not be without sin;
1:343
but rather that he displayed a flesh of his own, produced out of himself according to a mere likeness, as he willed — appearing from heaven, departing into the heavens, and being wholly divinity.
1:344
Valentinus, again, says that the suffering is common to the Trinity, imagining the flesh to be a part of the Godhead.
1:345
亞流則只承認肉身,認為肉身乃是為了遮掩神性;
Arius, on the other hand, confesses flesh alone, assumed for the concealment of the Godhead;
1:346
and in place of the inner man within us, that is, the soul, he says that the Word came to be in the flesh, daring to attribute the experience of suffering, and the resurrection from Hades, to the Godhead.
1:347
撒伯流則顯明自己所持的,正是撒摩撒他的保羅及其黨徒的見解;
Sabellius, in turn, has shown himself to hold the opinion of Paul of Samosata and his followers;
1:348
for, fearing the division stemming from Arius, he has fallen into the destructive error [of denying distinction].
1:349
那麼你們究竟依附於誰、又想幫助誰呢?抑或如俗語所說,你們成了「雜牌軍」?因為你們與前面所提到的一切異端都沆瀣一氣,不肯相信〔那神人的〕聯合;
But you — to whom do you adhere, or whom do you wish to help? Or, as the saying goes, have you become "a motley of every sort"? For you have agreed with all the aforementioned heretics, disbelieving in the union;
1:350
and contradicting the fulfillment, you have gone over into destruction, alleging fear of division as your pretext.
1:351
But just as those who divide are mad, and those who subtract have erred, so those who negate perish;
1:352
since the dispensation has come to pass in truth, and the truth has been manifested, and grace is attested —
1:353
Why then, making excuses, do you play the sophist? Why, dissembling, do you conceal the truth, and do not say openly that he did not become man by taking the form of a servant, but that he appeared as a man? This is the question your argument raises — you who, under pretext, keep saying 'the very same one, the very same one.'
1:354
They say that Christ is a man who was made divine.
1:355
And where then is the saying, 'In the beginning was the Word'? And the saying that 'having taken the form of a servant he became man'? Does it speak of a man who merely existed alongside God, or of a man joined together with God, or of a man who died for the world while himself being a part of the world, or of a man not separated from sin, or of a man ruling over angels, or of a man worshiped by creation, or of a man who is Lord, as the Apostle says —
1:356
Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ —
1:357
or a man who was crucified, while being the Lord of glory, or a man who hears —
1:358
or a man coming to render judgment.
1:359
This is your murky subversion, which you give people to drink, and make them drunk with.
1:360
那麼你們就去問猶太人吧,好叫你們從他們那裡聽見這些反對基督、也反對信他之人的話後,感到羞愧臉紅;
Ask then the Jews, so that, hearing from them these words spoken against Christ and against those who have believed in him, you may blush with shame;
1:361
and learn also from the other heretics, who speak and think the same things.
1:362
The rule of the Gospel, the preaching of the apostles, the testimony of the prophets, and the understanding of the fulfilled dispensation —
1:363
so that you may never, by confessing a birth of flesh, call it natural — thereby confirming the truth of our account —
1:364
but instead say that God was born, displaying his own flesh only in seeming appearance.
1:365
因為神所顯明的降生,並非僅僅是從拿撒勒起頭的;
For God does not exhibit merely a beginning of birth from Nazareth;
1:366
而是從童貞女那裡取了一切——就是神起初為構成人所塑造、所造成的一切,且無罪;
rather, he took from the Virgin everything that God from the beginning formed and made for the constitution of man, apart from sin;
1:367
as also the Apostle says —
1:368
「在凡事上與人相似,只是沒有罪」——他所顯出的並非神性的變異,而是照著自己的旨意,成就了人性的更新;
'In every respect like us, apart from sin' — not exhibiting a change of his divinity, but effecting a renewal of humanity, according to his own will;
1:369
so that the Gentiles might be fellow members of the body and fellow partakers with Christ, as also the Apostle writes —
1:370
使這人真實地是神,神也真實地是人,使他既真是人,又真是神;
so that the man might truly be God, and God might truly be man, so that he might be both truly man and truly God;
1:371
並非如你們毀謗所言,只是一個與神相對而立的人,你們藉此嘲弄基督徒的奧祕;
not a man merely existing alongside God, as you say in your slander, ridiculing the mystery of the Christians;
1:372
而是那獨生的神,以其神性的豐滿,甘願藉著自然的誕生與不能分開的聯合,從童貞女的腹中為自己興起那按原型所塑造之人的形像,成就一個嶄新的創造;
but the only-begotten God, in the fullness of his divinity, was pleased to raise up for himself, from the womb of the Virgin, the archetypal formation of man — a new creation — through a natural birth and an indissoluble union;
1:373
so that he might accomplish the saving work on behalf of mankind, working out the salvation of mankind through suffering, death, and resurrection.
1:374
但你們說,既然他取了一切,那麼他無疑也必定有人的種種思慮;
But you say that, if he took everything, then surely he also had human reasonings;
1:375
而人的思慮中不可能沒有罪;
and it is impossible that sin should not be present in human reasonings;
1:376
and how then will Christ be without sin? Tell me then —
1:377
若神是罪惡思慮的創造者,那麼這創造之責就必須歸於神自己;
if God is the maker of sinful reasonings, then his own creation must be charged back to God;
1:378
for he would then have come only to have his own handiwork held against him.
1:379
但如此一來,那定罪罪人的審判又將是不義的;
But again, the judgment condemning the sinner would be unjust;
1:380
因為若神創造了罪惡的思慮,他又怎能定罪人的罪呢?這樣的審判又怎能出於神呢?再者,若亞當在違背神的誡命之前,也受制於這樣的思慮,那他又怎會不知善惡呢?他本性上是有理性的,但思慮上是自由的,未曾經歷過惡,只認識善,猶如一個心思純一不雜的人;
for if God created sinful reasonings, how does he condemn the sinner? And how could such a judgment possibly come from God? But if Adam too were subject to such reasonings even before he disobeyed God's commandment, how then did he not know good and evil? He was rational by nature, yet free in his reasoning, having no experience of evil, knowing only the good, and being, as it were, a man of a single, undivided disposition;
1:381
但當他違背了神的誡命之後,就落入了罪惡思慮的轄制;
but having disobeyed God's commandment, he fell under the power of sinful reasonings;
1:382
not because God created the reasonings that take us captive, but because the devil, through deceit, sowed them into man's rational nature once it had fallen into transgression and been cast away from God — so that the devil established a law of sin in the nature of man, with death reigning through the work of sin.
1:383
But this is not the resolution of sin.
1:384
因為魔鬼起初並非只在那人〔亞當〕身上作成了罪,好叫當他〔基督〕來到世上、未曾犯罪時,罪便得以被解除;
For the devil did not originally work sin in that man so that, when he came into the world and did not sin, sin might thereby be dissolved;
1:385
but the devil worked sin by sowing it in the rational and intellective nature of man.
1:386
'For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh...'
1:387
神的兒子來,要藉著一個新的開端與奇妙的誕生,在自己的本性中成就律法所不能成就的;
the Son of God came to establish this in his own nature, by a new beginning and a wondrous generation;
1:388
not dividing the original constitution of human nature, but annulling the transgression that had been sown into it, as the prophet testifies, saying —
1:389
'Before the child knows good or evil, he refuses wickedness so as to choose the good.'
1:390
But if sinlessness was not manifested in the very nature that had sinned, how then was sin condemned in the flesh — since the flesh does not itself have the capacity to act, nor does the divinity know sin? How then does the Apostle say —
1:391
「罪在哪裡增多,恩典就更加豐盛」?這並非指明一個地方,而是預設了一個本性;
'Where sin increased, grace abounded all the more'? — not describing a place, but positing a nature;
1:392
「就如他所說:正如罪是藉著一人入了世界,死又是藉著罪來的,照樣,恩典也要藉著一人耶穌基督,藉著義掌權,直到永生」;
'For, as he says, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and through sin, death, so also through one man, Jesus Christ, grace might reign through righteousness unto eternal life';
1:393
為要使罪藉以擴展的那本性,也藉著同一本性顯出義來;
so that through the very nature by which the advance of sin occurred, through that same nature the manifestation of righteousness might also occur;
1:394
and thus the works of the devil might be undone, human nature being freed from sin, and God be glorified.
1:395
若基督僅僅是一個人,他就會是世界的一部分;
If Christ is merely a man, he will be a part of the world;
1:396
but a part of the world cannot save the world.
1:397
O device of deceit, and reckless madness of blasphemy!
1:398
For let them say from what Scripture this rule comes — or whether it is a sophistry of the devil;
1:399
and yet the prophet says —
1:400
'A brother does not redeem; a man will redeem.'
1:401
'And a man was born in her, and the Most High himself founded her.'
1:402
How then does Christ not save the world, having become man? — since it is plainly evident that in the very nature in which sin was committed, in that same nature the abundance of grace has come to be.
1:403
那麼恩典的豐盛究竟是什麼呢?就是道成了人,卻仍然是神;
But what is this abundance of grace? That the Word became man, while remaining God;
1:404
使他即使成了人,仍被人信為是神;
so that, even in becoming man, he might be believed to be God;
1:405
just as Christ, though being man, is God — because, being God, he became man — and saves those who believe, in the form of man.
1:406
'For if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.'
1:407
But God does not undergo death, nor does he need resurrection, but raises others from the dead.
1:408
因此,神便有需要擁有某物,可以為我們獻上,無論是在死亡中,或是在生命中;
Hence it became necessary for God to have something to offer on our behalf, whether in death or in life;
1:409
so that the Word saves all the more precisely because he became man.
1:410
那麼,那已然習於罪、又承接了罪之相傳的本性,又怎能無罪呢?這是不可能的;
And how can the nature that has come into the habit of sin, and has inherited the succession of sin, be without sin? This is impossible;
1:411
and so Christ too will be merely one among men.
1:412
而馬吉安也曾持這樣的觀點;
But Marcion too held these views;
1:413
摩尼也曾提出同樣的見解,將人的肉身、乃至誕生本身,都歸屬於邪惡的統治者之下,並稱他為「掌權者」;
this same opinion Mani also introduced, placing the flesh of man, and birth itself, under the ruler of evil, and calling him 'the Ruling Power';
1:414
for by whatever a man is overcome, to that he is also enslaved.
1:415
你們也用另一種方式,重新演繹了這些人的見解——你們又進一步將人那有心智的本性(他們稱之為「魂」)也交付出去,並斷定這心智是無可避免地陷於罪中;
You too renew the opinion of these men, in another way — by additionally surrendering the intellective nature of man, which is called 'soul,' and declaring this to be inescapably bound to sin;
1:416
而且,你們甚至還寫道魂是屬肉體的——你們是從何處學來這種說法,我實在不得而知;
and, what is more, you have even written that the soul is carnal — where you learned this, I cannot tell;
1:417
for this can be found neither in the holy Scriptures, nor in the common reasoning of mankind, since the Lord says —
1:418
'Do not fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul.'
1:419
And how, if the soul is fleshly as you claim, does it not die along with the body and perish together with it? And how also does Peter, calling the souls held in Hades 'spirits,' say —
1:420
'He went to preach the resurrection to the spirits shut up in prison'? But you speak of and name everything contrary to nature, lest, by describing the dispensation according to nature, you should thereby confirm the truth concerning the Word — that the Word truly became man as well.
1:421
For you have said that it is the voice of God that declares: "The understanding of man is intently set upon evil things from his youth."
1:422
not understanding that, in saying "from youth," he indicated that which comes from procreation and is subject to mortality—
1:423
並非要藉此確立基督按肉身也是如此;
not so as to establish that Christ was so according to the flesh;
1:424
but rather, having taken the form of a servant, in the forbearance of a birth from a woman and an increase of stature like our own, as the Apostle says:
1:425
"Since therefore the children have shared in blood and flesh, he himself likewise partook of the very same things;"
1:426
所謂『照樣』,是指並非出於精血,而是出於聖靈;
"likewise," indeed, in that it was not from seed, but from the Spirit;
1:427
How then, having passed over the holy Scriptures and the manifestation of the truth, do you say that, if he did not appear as a man of himself, but became man by taking on a human existence—
1:428
will the crucified Lord of glory also be a man? If then you hear Peter saying:
1:429
『你們所釘十字架的這位耶穌,神已經立他為基督、為主了』——你們認為這『立』字是指什麼而言?若是指道的神性而言,那你們又何必還責備亞流派,自己所持的見解卻與他們相同呢?若是指道裡面僕人的形像而言,那你們又何必還自相爭執呢?但你們並不是這樣相信的;
"This Jesus, whom you crucified, God has made both Christ and Lord"—of what do you take this "making" to be spoken? If indeed of the deity of the Logos, why then do you still find fault with the Arians, holding the very same views as they do? But if of the form of a servant that is in the Logos, why then do you still contend with yourselves? But you have not believed it in this way;
1:430
倘若那犯過罪的本性在神裡面卻不犯罪,那便是被必然性所轄制;
If the nature that had sinned came to be in God without committing sin, then it is held fast by necessity;
1:431
and that which is held by necessity is a thing done under compulsion.
1:432
倘若不犯罪是出於必然,那麼犯罪便是出於本性;
If not sinning comes about by necessity, then sinning will be according to nature;
1:433
you will then have to grant that the creator of that nature is the active author of sin—
1:434
But if such a thing is blasphemy, while sinning yet happens by necessity—
1:435
it is quite evident that not sinning came about according to nature.
1:436
"You ascended on high, you led captivity captive."
1:437
For the Logos, putting forward the form of a servant against the enemy, achieved the victory through that very thing which had once been defeated.
1:438
"Take courage, I have conquered the world."
1:439
因為魔鬼並未向神性開戰,因他並不認識神性——他也斷不敢如此;
For the devil did not wage war against the deity, which he did not know—indeed, he would not have dared to;
1:440
"If you are the Son of God—"
1:441
but against man, whom he had once been able to deceive, and from that one he extended the working of his wickedness to all mankind.
1:442
But since the soul of Adam was held under the condemnation of death, and cried out continually to its own Master, and since those who had pleased God and been justified under the natural law, being held together with Adam, mourned and cried out along with him, God, having had mercy on the man whom he had made, was pleased, through the manifestation of a mystery, to accomplish a salvation of a new kind for the human race—both to bring about the overthrow of the enemy who had deceived through envy, and to display an incalculable exaltation of man through union and communion with the Most High, in nature and in truth.
1:443
And he was born of a woman, having raised up in himself the form of man from the first molding, in a manifestation of flesh apart from fleshly desires and human reasonings, in the image of a new creation.
1:444
因為意願唯獨屬於神性;
For the willing belongs to deity alone;
1:445
since indeed the whole nature of the Logos is manifest in the manifestation of the human form and the visible flesh of the second Adam—not in a division of persons, but in the coexistence of deity and humanity.
1:446
"The ruler of this world is coming, and he finds nothing in me."
1:447
And yet we have learned that the second Adam possesses both a soul and a body, and the whole of the first man.
1:448
因為若這「毫無所有」是指人的存有而言,那麼既說「毫無所有」,他又怎能找著那看得見的身體呢?但其實,他並未在他裡面找著自己曾在第一個亞當身上所作成的那些東西;
For if the "nothing" referred to the existence of the man, how did he find the visible body, when he had said "nothing"? But he did not find in him those things which he himself had wrought in the first Adam;
1:449
如此,罪便在基督裡被廢除了;
and thus sin was abolished in Christ;
