1:1
He calls blessed those who have not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor indeed stood in the way of sinners, nor taken their stand in the seat of the pestilent.
1:2
因為在猶太人中,曾有三個階層起來敵對救主,就是經學士、法利賽人和律法師;
For there were three orders among the Jews that rose up against the Savior: the scribes, the Pharisees, and the lawyers;
1:3
who might fittingly be called ungodly, and sinners, and pestilent.
1:4
Life is called a 'way' on account of its leading of those who are born toward their end. 'Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly.'
1:5
And since it is harmful to associate with the assemblies of the ungodly, he calls blessed the one who does not come near them even to any degree.
1:6
Such was Joseph of Arimathea, who buried the body of the Lord and God.
1:7
For it is said of him that he did not consent to the counsel of those who betrayed Jesus.
1:8
'And in the seat of the pestilent he has not sat.'
1:9
The 'seat of the pestilent,' then, is the teaching of the wicked.
1:10
For one must not meditate on the law of the Lord carelessly.
1:11
'But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he will meditate day and night.'
1:12
By 'the law' he clearly means the law of the angels.
1:13
For one must not meditate on the law of the Lord carelessly.
1:14
因為人不應時而默想、時而不默想,而應當時時刻刻、恆常不變地專注於神聖的言語;
For one ought not to meditate at one time and not at another, but always and continually be fastened to the divine oracles;
1:15
for this is what 'day and night' signifies.
1:16
行事端正之人的賞賜是美好的;
Fair is the reward of right conduct;
1:17
for he who devotes himself to the divine law, and is watered by the streams that flow from it,
1:18
Christ also called his own teaching 'water,' saying:
1:19
'If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.'
1:20
He is likened to a tree by the waters, ever flourishing, ever laden with fair fruit.
1:21
因為德行的競賽者,將在來世領受他們勞苦的果實;
For the athletes of virtue will receive the fruits of their labors in the age to come;
1:22
but even now, as though by certain leaves, they are shaded by good hope, and by this consolation they steal away the heaviness of their labors.
1:23
'For such a one, all things shall prosper.'
1:24
因為他必不做任何違反神聖律法的事,乃是使自己的意願與律法的旨意相合;
For he will do nothing contrary to the divine laws, fitting his will to the intent of the law;
1:25
having first forbidden every form of wickedness, and having shown the perfection of the divine laws, he thus added:
1:26
'Whatsoever he shall do.' 'And he shall be like the tree that is planted by the outlets of the waters,'
1:27
Christ is recorded in the divinely inspired Scripture as the tree of confession, or rather of the parable, according to what is said:
1:28
'She is a tree of life to all who hold fast to her.'
1:29
他因此說,凡信基督的人,都要成為他的身體;
He says, then, that those who have believed in Christ will become his body;
1:30
for he will transform the body of our humiliation to become conformed to the body of his glory.
1:31
in which everywhere it is possible to find Christ proclaimed.
1:32
基督是生命樹,使徒是枝子,果子是從他肋旁流出的血和水;
Christ is the tree of life, the apostles are the branches, the fruit is the blood and water from his side;
1:33
of which the one is a type prefiguring martyrdom, the other, baptism.
1:34
你當明白,樹的果子指的是正確的信仰;
By the fruit of the tree you should understand right faith;
1:35
and by its leaves, the fulfillment of the commandments.
1:36
果子也指那些正在得救的人,根則是洗禮;
The fruit is also those who are being saved, and the root is baptism;
1:37
and the Father is the husbandman. 'Which shall yield its fruit in its season,'
1:38
你當明白,樹的果子指的是信仰;
By the fruit of the tree you should understand faith;
1:39
and by its leaves, the fulfillment of the commandments.
1:40
'And its leaf shall not wither, nor shall it fall off.'
1:41
'And whatsoever he shall do shall be prospered.'
1:42
For no deed done according to God is without benefit.
1:43
By 'wind' you should understand the threat of God, which says:
1:44
'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire.'
1:45
那些聽見這同一聲音的人,必公義地仆倒;
Those who hear this same voice will justly fall down;
1:46
因為他們未曾站立在基督之上,而基督正是信徒的支柱和根基;
for they have not stood firm upon Christ, who is the support and foundation of believers;
1:47
for he says 'unto judgment,' not 'unto inquiry.'
1:48
他說:「在義人的會中」;
'In the assembly of the righteous,' he says;
1:49
for he separates the righteous from sinners: 'Because the Lord knows the way of the righteous,'
1:50
'Knows' is used instead of 'honors,' according to what was said by God to Moses:
1:51
instead of, 'I honor you, and you have found favor with me.'
1:52
Having declared the rulers of the Jewish nation to be ungodly, sinners, and pestilent in the first psalm, in this psalm he shows again, by means of such names, the deeds of which they have become partakers.
1:53
Having concluded the first psalm with the mention of the ungodly, he made the beginning of the second proceed from this very point, teaching that the aforementioned end of the ungodly will also receive those who raged madly against the Savior. 'Why did the nations rage furiously, and the peoples meditate vain things?' 'Raging' is an irrational disposition.
1:54
'Why' is to be taken as common to both clauses, that is:
1:55
這詞是從馬匹那種毫無理性、奔向毫無益處之事的衝動借用而來的;
it is transferred from the irrational impulse of horses that rushes toward nothing that is fitting;
1:56
which is what happened to the Jews in the case of Christ.
1:57
What is the cause of the nations and the peoples running together to the same purpose? For whether by 'nations and peoples' he means the Israelites, or whether he calls those around Herod and Pilate 'nations,' as Gentiles, and calls the Jews 'peoples' — 'The kings of the earth stood up,'
1:58
'Stood up' is used instead of 'set themselves apart for this,' namely, the kings Herod and Pontius Pilate.
1:59
Thus also the holy apostles interpreted it in the Acts. 'And the rulers were gathered together as one,'
1:60
the scribes and Pharisees and lawyers.
1:61
'Against the Lord and against his Christ.'
1:62
For the plot against Christ recoils also upon the Father himself.
1:63
Εἰ γὰρ ὁ Πατὴρ ἐν τῷ Υἱῷ καὶ ὁ Υἱὸς ἐν τῷ Πατρὶ, πῶς οὐ καὶ μία ἡ εἰς αὐτοὺς ὕβρις γένοιτ' ἄν;
For if the Father is in the Son and the Son is in the Father, how could the outrage against them not be one and the same?
1:64
'They gathered together against the Lord and against his Christ,' saying:
1:65
For they did not want to come within the sacred net, concerning which it is written:
1:66
'The kingdom of heaven is like a net.'
1:67
'And let us cast their yoke away from us.'
1:68
The heaviness of the law, concerning which he has said:
1:69
'For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.'
1:70
For the plot against Christ recoils also upon the Father himself.
1:71
For if the Father is in the Son, and the Son in the Father, how would the outrage against them not be a single one? 'He who dwells in the heavens shall laugh them to scorn.'
1:72
意即他們圖謀了愚昧之事;
As those who had devised foolish plans;
1:73
for he who was nailed by them and delivered to death, being in the heavens and containing all things, shows their plans to be empty and vain.
1:74
'And the Lord shall deride them.'
1:75
'For he will utterly despise them,' it says, 'and hate them, and turn away.'
1:76
'He shall deride' is used in place of 'he will hate and turn away.'
1:77
He will expose it as a plot, since they undertake it like fools.
1:78
For indeed, derision (μυκτηρισμός) is breath released through the nostrils, meant to hold in contempt those who bluster arrogantly.
1:79
And the fact that these words are said with prepositional prefixes makes the derision more intense.
1:80
'And not only this,' it says, 'but they shall also experience wrath.' 'Then he shall speak to them in his wrath.'
1:81
'Then' - when was this? It was when they were saying:
1:82
'Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees;'
1:83
'The kingdom shall be taken away from you;'
1:84
'And woe to you, lawyers.'
1:85
For the Roman army led them away captive,
1:86
Anger (θυμός), then, is more incomplete than wrath (ὀργή), and wrath is the fulfillment of anger.
1:87
And the outcome of events teaches the interpretation of such sayings.
1:88
因為羅馬的軍隊臨到他們,攻陷了那城,焚毀了聖殿,並將他們大多數人交付於死;
For a Roman army came upon them, sacked the city, burned down the temple, and put most of them to death;
1:89
and those who escaped the slaughter, it took captive and delivered over to slavery.
1:90
信徒理當留意,他接連提及了兩個位格,首先是主基督;
It is fitting that the believer take note that he mentions two persons in succession - first, the Lord Christ;
1:91
'For against the Lord,' he said, 'and against his Christ;'
1:92
其次是那坐在天上的,以及主;
then, him who dwells in the heavens, and the Lord;
1:93
'He who dwells in the heavens shall laugh them to scorn, and the Lord shall deride them;'
1:94
and again he kept the same pattern. 'But I have been established king by him upon Zion.'
1:95
彷彿出於以色列的百姓已被棄絕,他親自向他們述說臨到外邦人的信心;
As though the people from Israel had been cast off, he himself relates to them the faith that came to be among the Gentiles;
1:96
and Zion signifies the Church.
1:97
「主對我說:你是我的兒子」,以及以下經文;
'The Lord said to me, You are my Son,' and so on;
1:98
instead of saying, 'The Father's nature declared me to be Son;'
1:99
not by the operation of a command,
1:100
but by the essence (οὐσία) demonstrating me to be the exact expression (χαρακτήρ) of the Father's hypostasis (ὑπόστασις).
1:101
「你是」一詞加得恰當,表明那在萬世以先的生成;
For the word 'you are' is rightly added, signifying the begetting before the ages;
1:102
他又加上:「我今日生了你」,為要顯明按肉身的誕生;
and he added, 'Today have I begotten you,' in order to show the begetting according to the flesh;
1:103
因為「今日」是屬於時間的;
for 'today' belongs to time;
1:104
therefore it is set down with reference to the temporal begetting.
1:105
And consistent with what is human is also what follows, 'I have begotten you.'
1:106
See how the Father makes the fleshly begetting of the only-begotten Christ his own. 'And I will give you the ends of the earth for your possession; you shall shepherd them with a rod of iron.'
1:107
for the material is of wood, but the strength is as of iron.
1:108
But some interpret this as signifying the empire of the Romans.
1:109
'And now, O kings, be wise;'
1:110
that is, 'perceive, and turn to repentance.'
1:111
'Be instructed, all you who judge the earth.'
1:112
'lest you perish from the righteous way.'
1:113
The title set before this psalm reads as follows:
1:114
因為這詩篇所說的,正是先知的合唱團被猶太百姓所逼迫;
For this is what the psalm says: that the company of the prophets is persecuted by the people of the Jews;
1:115
which is the company of the prophets.
1:116
'O Lord, how are they multiplied that afflict me!' The word 'how' stands in place of 'exceedingly.'
1:117
'There is no salvation for him in his God.'
1:118
'His God,' it says, 'will not save him;'
1:119
for they looked only to the sin he had committed, being ignorant of his repentance.
1:120
For 'to rise up against' is properly said of those who were formerly established in the rank of subjects, but afterward took up war.
1:121
'But you, O Lord, are my helper, my glory.'
1:122
Since it has been said that the psalm is spoken as from the person of the Lord, it must be said that his head too - being God - is exalted, whenever his divinity is made manifest to the faithful through demonstration.
1:123
'But you, O Lord, are my helper;'
1:124
這是與先知的信心相稱的話語,他毫不動搖地忍受如此巨大的患難,並確信自己不會被撇棄;
A voice fitting the faith of the prophet, who bears such great troubles unshaken, and is confident that he will not be forsaken;
1:125
反而確信必得幫助、必被高舉、並要重得國度;
but rather that he will be helped, and exalted, and will receive back the kingdom;
1:126
因為有些人認為,這正是「抬起頭來」所指的;
for this is what some have said 'lifting up the head' means;
1:127
and he to whom God is his glory, this one has his head lifted up. 'With my voice I cried unto the Lord.'
1:128
'With my voice I cried unto the Lord.'
1:129
He set the prayer first, then after the interlude (διάψαλμα), the thanksgiving, for having obtained what he asked.
1:130
But now he turns his face toward us, and relates how, having prayed, he was heard, and says:
1:131
'With my voice I cried unto the Lord.'
1:132
所謂「聲音」,當理解為心思向萬有之神所發的理智性懇求;
And by 'voice' one must understand the intelligent supplication of the mind directed to the God of all;
1:133
for he does not mean the audible cry, but the silent prayer of the mind.
1:134
「他從山上垂聽了我」,這是按當時流行的看法而說的;
'He heard me from the mountain' is said according to the prevailing opinion;
1:135
for he was thought to dwell in the Tabernacle, since the oracles too were given to the priests from there.
1:136
或者,「從聖山」乃是「從天上」之意;
Or, 'from the holy mountain' is used in place of 'from heaven;'
1:137
and, 'Draw near to the eternal mountains' - it is possible that the holy mountain of God, from which God hears those who pray, is his only-begotten Son, concerning whom it is said:
1:138
'The mountain of the Lord shall be made manifest in the last days;'
1:139
這話表明他曾經有過的顯現,就是他在萬世的終結時降臨;
this expression signifying the manifestation of him that came to pass, according to his sojourning at the consummation of the ages;
1:140
or, 'from the holy mountain' means 'from heaven.'
1:141
The holy mountain of God is His transcendent knowledge.
1:142
The diapsalma [Selah] signifies a change of musical melody or mode, or a shift in the sense and force of the discourse.
1:143
The word 'I awoke' signifies this: that having enjoyed the divine turning, I became stronger than the evils that had befallen me.] 'I lay down and slept.'
1:144
He speaks of the sleep that concerns the mind, through which he also fell into sin.
1:145
[For thou hast smitten all who are hostile to me.
1:146
'Strike,' 'crush,' or 'thou wilt strike.'
1:147
He urges on God's rising up against them, that is, His vengeance.
1:148
He who gives no occasion for hatred has enemies in vain.
1:149
「罪人的牙齒」,或指那些得罪他之人的力量,或指針對他所發的言語與褻瀆之詞;
By 'the teeth of sinners' he means either the strength of those who sin against him, or the words spoken against him, and the blasphemies;
1:150
or 'the teeth of sinners' are the irrational thoughts, contrary to nature, that befall us.
1:151
For using their thoughts as teeth, the adversaries often draw near to us in order to devour our flesh, that is, the things that spring forth from the flesh.
1:152
'Now the works of the flesh are manifest,' says the divine Apostle.
1:153
He says this by way of metaphor drawn from wild beasts, whose strength lies especially in their teeth; and once these are shattered, the beasts become easily despised.
1:154
For murderers and those who delight in blood are worse than even the blood-devouring beasts themselves, or are equal to them.] 'Salvation is of the Lord.'
1:155
I pray also that this may be proclaimed to all the people.
1:156
One must know that the whole psalm has reference to humanity: having sinned, and for this reason having been handed over to the intelligible enemies; crying out in affliction and being heard by God; and indeed also having been saved through his rising from the dead—evidently Christ—and through his smiting the demons that are hostile to us.
1:157
For he himself is the Lord who has broken the molar teeth of the lions.
1:158
And salvation is His, that is, it comes from Him.
1:159
這篇詩篇是在戰爭得勝之後,獻給那賜勝利者的。〔阿奎拉與提阿多田將「歸於終結」譯作「歸於得勝者」;
This psalm, after winning the war, he dedicates to the Giver of victory. [Instead of 'unto the end,' Aquila and Theodotion rendered it 'to the Victor';
1:160
but Symmachus rendered it 'A Song of Victory.'] 'When I call upon Him, the God of my righteousness hears me.'
1:161
Similar to: 'While thou art yet speaking, he will say...'
1:162
'Not only,' he says, 'didst thou bring me out of my straits, but thou also madest me stand in a spacious place.'
1:163
When we come to understand the reasons for afflictions and trials, then especially are we set at large.
1:164
But it is possible to speak of 'spaciousness' in another sense as well.] 'Have mercy on me, and hearken to my prayer.'
1:165
Since he had said that he was heard on account of His righteousness, for this reason he now has recourse to the compassions of God.
1:166
'Sons of men, how long will ye be heavy of heart?'
1:167
These things are said with reference to those who trusted in the multitude of their army to capture the righteous man.
1:168
'But this hope,' he says, 'is vain and false.'
1:169
'And know that the Lord has made His holy one wonderful.'
1:170
That is: 'Know, therefore, ye who trust in a multitude, how wonderfully He has shown forth the one who trusts in Him.'
1:171
'The Lord will hearken unto me when I cry unto Him.'
1:172
這裡是以一個時態代替了另一個時態;
One tense has been taken in place of another;
1:173
that is, instead of 'He heard,' he used the word 'He will hear.' 'Be angry, and sin not.'
1:174
'What ye say in your hearts, be pricked with compunction upon your beds.'
1:175
He says these things with reference to his own people, though they apply to all men.
1:176
'Even if,' he says, 'ye give way to anger, yet render it powerless through compunction in stillness.'
1:177
For this is the meaning of 'Be pricked with compunction upon your beds.'
1:178
'Offer the sacrifice of righteousness, and hope in the Lord.'
1:179
But how shall we prevail? By acting righteously, and offering this up to God as though it were a sacrifice.
1:180
'Who will show us good things?' These are the words of those who are careless of God's governance and dispensations.
1:181
'The light of thy countenance, O Lord, has been signed upon us.'
1:182
The light of the world is Christ, who also taught us the things that are truly good, on account of which we have come to have spiritual joy in mind and heart.
1:183
The God-loving soul, that is, the Church, is the one who inherits.
1:184
And what is it that she inherits? 'What eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor has entered into the heart of man.'
1:185
And she prays, doing all she can to be heard, both presenting her own uprightness and denouncing the wickedness of those responsible for her afflictions.
1:186
[For unto thee will I pray.
1:187
'Having come,' she says, 'to enjoy the intelligible light, I will pray to thee;'
1:188
'therefore I also believe that I shall be heard.'] 'Give ear to my words.'
1:189
It is a great boast of striving that, rising from her very bed, she presents herself before God and anticipates the sun itself in giving thanks.
1:190
'For thus,' she says, 'shall I behold thy divine and holy mysteries, which thou hast prepared for those who love thee.'
1:191
'For thou art not a God who wills lawlessness.'
1:192
And these are: lawlessness, wickedness, transgression, falsehood, envy, and deceit.
1:193
'Thou hast hated all who work lawlessness; thou wilt destroy all who speak falsehood.'
1:194
他把那些在生活行為上跌倒犯錯的人,稱作「行不法的人」;
Those who stumble in their manner of life he named 'those who work lawlessness';
1:195
but those who have fallen away from the truth—the heterodox—he called 'those who speak falsehood,' whom God will destroy.
1:196
And observe the difference between 'thou hast hated' and 'thou wilt destroy.'
1:197
首先,「你必毀滅」是否比「你恨惡」更為嚴重;
First, whether 'thou wilt destroy' is worse than 'thou hast hated';
1:198
and second, why the one was cast in the past tense, and the other in the future.
1:199
[He means] the demons, who speak through the idols false and crooked words and oracles.] 'The Lord abhors the man of blood and the deceitful man.'
1:200
For God hates such a one and turns away from him.
1:201
'But I, in the multitude of thy mercy, will come into thy house.'
1:202
The heavenly Jerusalem, the mother of the firstborn.
1:203
'I will worship toward thy holy temple in thy fear.'
1:204
The temple of God is the virtuous and holy condition, which those who possess it, he says, approach with confidence.
1:205
But Christ, as Son, will rest upon His house, of which house we are.
1:206
'For enjoying thy loving-kindness, and guarded by thy right hand, I offer thee continual worship in the temple consecrated to thy glory,' says the holy and pure soul;
1:207
'for always bearing about thy fear, I will not endure to cast it away, even while trusting in thy loving-kindness.'
1:208
'Because of my enemies, direct my way before thee.'
1:209
[He means] the wise men of this age, or also the heretics.
1:210
For these do not know the word of truth.
1:211
他們的喉嚨是敞開的墳墓;
Their throat is an open sepulcher;
1:212
with their tongues they have dealt deceitfully
1:213
They smooth their tongue, and belch forth dead doctrines
1:214
Let them fall away from their own devices
1:215
For, he says, all these devices were contrived against me, since they were opposing my progress according to God.
1:216
[According to the multitude of their impieties, drive them out — for they have but fashioned themselves as pious
1:217
For those who persecute the soul that does what is pleasing to God embitter God, clearly warring against God.] And you will dwell in them
1:218
For He Himself will come, and the Father, and they will make their abode with him
1:219
And those who love your name will glory in you, for you will bless the righteous, O Lord
1:220
For since your blessing and providence are supplied to your servants, who, having made themselves lovers of your name, will think great things because of your care for them, recounting your power
1:221
Thus also the blessed Paul says:
1:222
Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord
1:223
You have crowned us as with a shield of favor
1:224
A crown, he says, you will grant as the completion of our labors, fencing us about with this as with a kind of shield
1:225
And what could the eighth day be, but the resurrection day of Christ, on which we shall receive the fruits of our labors — our enemies, that is, being turned back, evidently with shame and confusion?
1:226
He sings this psalm as one who has spent a long time in the repentance which he offered on account of sin
1:227
O Lord, do not rebuke me in your wrath
1:228
他所拒絕的不是責備本身,而是帶著烈怒的責備;
He does not refuse the rebuke itself, but the one accompanied by wrath;
1:229
nor does he refuse discipline, but that which comes with anger
1:230
Have mercy on me, O Lord, for I am weak
1:231
For no soul falls into sin before it first gives way in its strength
1:232
[He hints at the weakness that arises from despondency and lamentation.] And my soul is greatly troubled
1:233
Αἱ τῆς ψυ.
That is, evidently, the powers of the soul
1:234
'And you, O Lord, how long?' — this phrase is indicative of a long-continued repentance
1:235
Turn, O Lord, deliver my soul
1:236
As one evidently turned away because of sin
1:237
Save me for your mercy's sake
1:238
For everything belonging to our salvation must be attributed to the mercy of God
1:239
For in death there is no one who remembers you
1:240
Since the time of my repentance has grown long, he says, I fear lest death overtake your mercy, since in death there is no place for confession
1:241
For this reason I ask that mercy be hastened
1:242
I have grown weary with my groaning
1:243
Let us hear what kind of repentance the king displayed
1:244
他並非只是疲乏,而是因歎息而困乏;
He did not simply grow tired, but wearied himself with groaning;
1:245
nor did he simply weep, but drenched his bed, and this every night
1:246
他所顧念的不僅是過去,也向未來立下承諾,直到一生的年日;
And he does not look only to the past, but also makes promises for the future, throughout his whole life;
1:247
and the time which most people make an occasion of praise [or: of rest], this he made an occasion of confession
1:248
Instead of the one night, he says, in which I committed the sin, I spent many nights drenching my bed with tears
1:249
My eye is troubled because of grief
1:250
By 'eye' he means the mind, since the mind is the eye of the soul
1:251
I have grown old among all my enemies
1:252
Here he indicates the length of time of his affliction
1:253
[Which he has also reckoned as a rank of achievement, because it was so great.] For the Lord has heard the voice of my weeping
1:254
As one already heard, he strings together a lengthy discourse against his enemies
1:255
And this too is no small path toward virtue: to flee and repel the company of the wicked
1:256
For this is the fruit of repentance and the gain of tears
1:257
Or this is said elliptically, instead of:
1:258
'Depart, for I have been heard, for I who was cast off through sin have been received back'
1:259
who, having gone and feigned betrayal, when counsel was proposed by Absalom to both Hushai himself and Ahithophel—
1:260
亞希多弗主張立即追擊,戶篩則主張不要追擊;
Ahithophel urging pursuit, but Hushai urging otherwise;
1:261
他說,因為不可貿然無準備地去攻打一個精通戰事的人;
for one must not, he says, attack rashly a man skilled in warfare;
1:262
so that, not being saved by human help, he offers up to God a song of thanksgiving for these things, attributing the whole to God's grace, and to no man
1:263
O Lord my God, in you I have put my hope
1:264
Since, he says, I do not put my confidence in man for salvation, even though Hushai's words were good, save me both from my present enemies, and especially from the intelligible lion lying in wait for our soul
1:265
If I have repaid with evil those who repaid me evil
1:266
He puts forward his freedom from bearing grudges, thereby calling upon God unto mercy
1:267
then may I fall away from my enemies empty
1:268
義人得勝之後,是滿載而歸地離開仇敵;
The righteous man, having conquered, comes forth full from his enemies;
1:269
but the base man, having been defeated, falls away from them empty, having nothing of fullness
1:270
Then let the enemy pursue my soul
1:271
我若做了前面所說的任何一件事,就任憑我落入魔鬼的手中;
May I fall into the hands of the devil, if I have done any such thing as has been said before;
1:272
and if I have done this or that, may I not be freed from sin before death
1:273
Be exalted at the borders of my enemies
1:274
That is, among the mightiest of my enemies
1:275
And arise, O Lord my God, at the commandment which you have ordained
1:276
Clearly, through these words he proclaims the good news of the theophany of the Savior
1:277
And the assembly of the peoples will surround you
1:278
Clearly through these words he indicates the Church's faith in him
1:279
And for her sake, return on high
1:280
That is, evidently, of this assembly
1:281
And 'on high' hints either at the precious cross, onto which he bore up our sins, or at the ascension into heaven.
1:282
For he went to appear before the face of the Father on our behalf.
1:283
'Judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness.' Again he asks to be saved from his enemies, invoking mercy in view of what they have done.
1:284
Of him who saves the upright in heart.
1:285
'Since you know,' he says, 'the thoughts of our heart, for this reason I ask for help.'
1:286
'God is a righteous judge, strong and long-suffering.'
1:287
Clearly through such words he sets forth the long-suffering of God, who indeed grants a delay of our punishment, yet not complete pardon.
1:288
'He has wrought his arrows for those who burn.'
1:289
By 'arrows' he means punishment, and by 'those who burn' those worthy of fire.
1:290
The enemy of our life.
1:291
'He has conceived travail and brought forth iniquity.'
1:292
That is, he has both plotted and brought his schemes into action.
1:293
'He has dug a pit and hollowed it out.'
1:294
For having contrived death against Christ the Savior, he is himself delivered over to death.
1:295
Formerly, in the worship under the Law, there was one winepress, namely, the altar in the temple;
1:296
but after the calling of the nations, there are many winepresses;
1:297
and these would be the churches, which receive the fruits of those who succeed in godliness.
1:298
[It is said 'unto the end,' because the things prophesied were to reach their fulfillment at the end of the ages,
1:299
for it speaks concerning Christ and the churches that came after the incarnation.
1:300
since indeed the Only-begotten is called the vine, and the faithful the branches.
1:301
But if the Jew insists that the psalm is spoken of man in common,
1:302
then let it thus be known, that for this reason all things were subjected to him, as to one made in the image of God who was to become man.] 'O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name in all the earth!'
1:303
He is astonished at the knowledge of the name of God that has been given to men.
1:304
For God is no longer known to those in Judea alone.
1:305
'Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings you have perfected praise.'
1:306
Of those who, in relation to God, are as infants in wickedness.
1:307
This is also clearly recorded in the Gospels, the Savior having said it when the Pharisees tried to silence the children who were blessing him.
1:308
'Because of your enemies, to destroy the enemy and the avenger.'
1:309
Either the sensible enemy, or the intelligible one, or the Jewish people;
1:310
for they pursued Christ as an enemy;
1:311
yet they pretended to be doing this in avenging the Father.
1:312
'He who hates me hates my Father also.'
1:313
'The enemy and the avenger' clearly means the devil.
1:314
Since, after compelling them to fulfill sin, he also punishes those who sin, thereby setting before their eyes the magnitude of their offense.
1:315
Or the people of the Jews, enemies of the truth, yet avengers in seeming to avenge the law.
1:316
'For I will behold the heavens, the works of your fingers.'
1:317
Those men were indignant at the infants perfecting praise;
1:318
but I behold that which is so great and beautiful — I mean the heavens — as but a small work of your creation.
1:319
'What is man, that you are mindful of him? Or the son of man, that you visit him? You have made him a little lower than the angels.'
1:320
Since Paul has clearly interpreted these words as referring to our Savior, we must be content with that exposition.
1:321
'You have put all things in subjection under his feet.'
1:322
'Let us make man according to our image and likeness,' he added;
1:323
'and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea,' and he goes on to enumerate the rest in turn, adding;
1:324
'Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and have dominion over it;'
1:325
for to the rational nature, as being made like unto God, he granted dominion over all things.
1:326
And man, having received the power of the divine image, was established as ruler over the things on earth, just as God is King of all.
1:327
'And you have set him over the works of your hands'; and elsewhere it says, 'And the heavens are the works of your hands';
1:328
it is clear, then, that he set him over the heavens, and perhaps he obscurely signifies the sojourn in heaven of those who are transferred there from earth, when they are to inherit the kingdom of heaven, as has been promised.
1:329
'Heirs indeed of God, and joint heirs with Christ.'
1:330
In this way also the phrase, 'You have put all things in subjection under his feet,' is to be understood.
1:331
For since a life equal to the angels is laid up for men in heaven, once established there over the works of his hands, man will be a beholder of the heavens and of the things in them.
1:332
But the blessed Paul understood this too as referring to the Savior, and as coming to pass in the age to come.
1:333
'Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'
1:334
He hints at those from Israel who believe.
1:335
'And also the cattle of the field.'
1:336
'The birds of the heaven' means those who are puffed up in life and mind lofty things — the most unreasoning.
1:337
'O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name in all the earth!'
1:338
He redoubles his wonder, being amazed, as I have said, at the knowledge of God that has come to be among men.
1:339
For many were the things done by him in secret;
1:340
namely, the birth according to the flesh from a Virgin through the Holy Spirit, the paradoxical and wonder-working powers, death itself, the descent into Hades, and the revival from the dead.
1:341
For all these things were done by him in secret.
1:342
For he hid these things even from the rulers of this world.
1:343
For these hidden things, then, the prophet comes forward in the person of mankind, giving thanks and saying:
1:344
'I will give thanks to you, O Lord.'
