「我與父原為一」這句話也是這樣領會的;因為在這一位裡的,與在子裡的並非兩樣;
Thus too is understood the saying, “I and the Father are one”; since the things in this One are not other than the things in the Son;
1:633
but the things that are in the Father, these same things are in the Son.
1:634
And the things you see in the Father, since you see them in the Son, the saying is rightly understood, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.” And these things being thus demonstrated, he is impious who says that the Son is a creature.
1:635
For he will be compelled to call the gushing fountain a creature, and Wisdom and the Word a creature — the Word in whom are all the things of the Father.
1:636
Moreover, from the following too one may see the rottenness of the heresy of the Ariomaniacs.
1:637
凡與我們相似、又與我們有同樣本質的,我們便與之同質(同一本體);
Those things to which we are alike and with which we share identity of nature, with these we are also of one essence (consubstantial);
1:638
men, then, being alike and sharing identity of nature, are consubstantial with one another.
1:639
And angels too in relation to one another, and all other things likewise, are of the same nature with one another.
1:640
所以,讓那些好奇探究的人去查考,看受造之物與子之間有何相似之處;
Let the over-curious therefore search whether there is any likeness in created things to the Son;
1:641
or whether they can find in things made the things that are in the Son, so that they may dare to call the Word of God a creature also.
1:642
But they will not find it, those who are altogether rash and astray concerning godliness.
1:643
For among created things nothing is almighty, and nothing is held in being by another.
1:644
For each of them belongs to God.
1:645
因為「諸天述說神的榮耀」;
For “the heavens declare the glory of God”;
1:646
又說「地和其中所充滿的,都屬乎耶和華」;
and “the earth is the Lord's, and the fullness thereof”;
1:647
“the sea saw it and fled.” And all things are servants of their Maker, doing His word and obeying His command.
1:648
惟有子是全能的,正如父一樣;
But the Son is almighty, as the Father is;
1:649
and this has been both written and demonstrated.
1:650
Again, among created things nothing is unchangeable by nature.
1:651
因為有些天使不守本位;
For some of the angels did not keep their own estate;
1:652
「星宿在祂眼前也不潔淨」;魔鬼也從天上墜落了;
and “the stars are not pure in His sight”; and the devil fell from heaven;
1:653
and all things are subject to alteration.
1:654
But the Son is unchangeable and unalterable, as the Father is.
1:655
And this Paul recalled from the hundred-and-first psalm, saying:
1:656
「主啊,你起初立了地的根基;
“And You, Lord, in the beginning founded the earth;
1:657
and the heavens are the works of Your hands.
1:658
天地都要滅沒,你卻要長存;
They shall perish, but You remain;
1:659
天地都要像衣服漸漸舊了,你要將天地捲起來像一件外衣,天地就都改變了;
and they all shall wax old as a garment, and as a vesture You shall fold them up, and they shall be changed;
1:660
but You are the same, and Your years shall not fail.” And again he says:
1:661
“Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today,
1:662
and forever.” And again, all things that have come to be once were not, and have come to be.
1:663
因為祂造地如同造無有;
For He made the earth as nothing;
1:664
「祂呼喚那無有的為有」;它們是被造之物、是受造之物;
and “He calls the things that are not as though they were”; and they are works and creatures;
1:665
for this very reason they have a beginning of coming into being.
1:666
因為「起初神創造天地,並其中的萬物」;
For “in the beginning God made the heaven and the earth, and all that is in them”;
1:667
「這一切都是我手所造的。」惟有子是自有的,是在萬有之上的神,正如父一樣;
“My hand made all these things.” But the Son is, and is the God who is over all, as the Father is;
1:668
這事也已如此得了證明;
and this too has thus been demonstrated;
1:669
祂不是被造的,乃是造的;
and He is not made, but the maker;
1:670
and not created, but creating and doing the works of the Father.
1:671
「萬物是藉著祂造的;
And “all things were made through Him;
1:672
凡被造的,沒有一樣不是藉著祂造的」;
and without Him was not anything made that was made”;
1:673
and as the Apostle taught regarding the psalm, “He in the beginning founded the earth, and the heavens are the works of His hands.”
1:674
再者,受造之物中沒有一樣按本性是神;
And again, none of the created things is God by nature;
1:675
but each of the things that have come to be, what it has indeed become, that also it was called;
1:676
這個是天,那個是地;
the one heaven, another earth;
1:677
有的是發光體,有的是星宿;
and some the luminaries, others the stars;
1:678
又有的是海、是深淵、是走獸;
and others sea, and depths, and four-footed beasts;
1:679
在這些以先,又有天使、天使長、基路伯、撒拉弗、有能者、執政的、掌權的、主治的、樂園;
and before these, angels and archangels, cherubim, seraphim, and powers, principalities, authorities, dominions, paradise;
1:680
and thus each one continues as it is.
1:681
And if some were even called gods, yet not by nature, but by participation in the Son.
1:682
For thus He Himself said:
1:683
“You are gods, and all of you sons of the Most High; but you, as men, shall die.” Such a one was he who heard:
1:684
“You are a man, and not God.” But the Son is true God, as the Father is.
1:685
因為父在祂裡面,祂也在父裡面;
For in Him is the Father, and the Father is in the Son;
1:686
and John wrote, as has been shown:
1:687
「神啊,你的寶座是永永遠遠的;
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
1:688
a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.” And the prophet Isaiah cries out:
1:689
“Egypt has labored, and the merchandise of the Ethiopians;
1:690
and the Sabeans, men of stature, shall pass over to you, and shall follow after you bound with fetters, and shall worship you, because God is in you.
1:691
For You are the God of Israel, and we did not know it.” Who, then, is the God in whom God is, except the Son who says:
1:692
[having no] kinship [with the creatures, He would otherwise have been] consubstantial with them;
1:693
祂既在本質上與受造之物有別,乃是父本有的道,與那一位並非二者;
thus, being alien in essence to created things, but the proper Word of the Father, He not being other than that One;
1:694
since all the things of the Father are also His own, He would fittingly be consubstantial with the Father.
1:695
For thus also the Fathers, having understood it, confessed at the Council of Nicaea that the Son is consubstantial and of the essence of the Father.
1:696
For they perceived well that a created essence could never say:
1:697
“All things that the Father has are Mine.” For having a beginning of coming to be, it does not possess the “is” and the “was” eternally.
1:698
And for this reason, since the Son has these things, and all the aforesaid things of the Father are the Son's, it follows of necessity that the essence of the Son is not created, but consubstantial with the Father.
1:699
Moreover, on this account too it could not be a created essence, being receptive of the things proper to God.
1:700
And the things proper to Him are those by which God is known, such as the almighty, the “that which is,” the unalterable, and the other aforesaid attributes, lest God Himself, according to those fools, should appear consubstantial with the creatures, possessing the very things that creatures too can have.
1:701
And in this way too one might refute the impiety of those who say that the Word of God is a creature.
1:702
Our faith is in Father and Son and Holy Spirit, the Son Himself saying to the apostles:
1:703
“Go, make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” And He said it thus, so that from what we know, from these we might understand also concerning the aforesaid matters.
1:704
正如我們不稱父親們為製造者,乃稱為生養者;也沒有人稱我們為父親的受造之物,乃稱為按本性所生的兒子,與父親同質;
As, then, we would not call fathers makers, but begetters, and no one would call us creatures of our fathers, but sons by nature, and consubstantial with our fathers;
1:705
so, if God is Father, He is altogether the Father of a Son who is by nature and consubstantial.
1:706
如此,亞伯拉罕不是造了以撒,乃是生了他;
Abraham, then, did not create Isaac, but begot him;
1:707
but Bezalel and Eliab did not beget, but made all the works that were in the tabernacle.
1:708
And the shipwright and the builder do not beget what they make, but each works — the one the vessel, the other the house.
1:709
惟有以撒不是製作,乃是按本性生養雅各,與自己同質;
Isaac, however, does not make, but begets by nature, Jacob consubstantial with him;
1:710
and Jacob likewise begot Judah and his brothers.
1:711
As, then, one would be mad who said the house was consubstantial with the builder, and the vessel with the shipwright, so fittingly might one say that every son is consubstantial with his own father.
1:712
If, therefore, there is a Father and a Son, the Son must of necessity be a Son by nature and in truth.
1:713
And this is to be consubstantial with the Father, as has been shown from many things.
1:714
Indeed, concerning the works it is said:
1:715
「祂說有,就有;
“He spoke, and they came to be;
1:716
He commanded, and they were created.” But concerning the Son:
1:717
(尼布甲尼撒)看見子使火窯如降甘露;
and He saw the Son bedewing the furnace;
1:718
至於那些被造的工,經上說:「耶和華的一切工啊,你們都要稱頌耶和華」,並一一數點各樣受造之物;
but concerning the works he says, “Bless the Lord, all you works of the Lord,” and he enumerated each of the creatures;
1:719
but the Son he did not number among these, knowing that He is not a work, but that through Him the works came to be, and that He is praised and exalted in the Father.
1:720
As, then, through Him God is revealed to those who know Him, so through Him the blessing, the hymn, the glory, and the might are confessed to the Father, through Him and in Him, that such a confession may also be acceptable, as the Scriptures say.
1:721
From many things, then, and from these, it has been and is shown that he is impious who says the Word of God is a creature.
1:722
But since they make a pretext of what is written in the Proverbs, “The Lord created me as the beginning of His ways for His works,” and add among themselves:
1:723
「看哪,祂創造了他,所以他是受造之物」;
“Behold, He created, and He is a creature”;
1:724
it is necessary from this also to show how greatly they err, not knowing the aim of the divine Scripture.
1:725
祂若是子,就不可稱為受造之物;
If, then, He is Son, let Him not be called a creature;
1:726
but if He is a creature, let Him not be called Son.
1:727
And since the consummation holds not in a creator and a creature, but in Father and Son, it is necessary that the Lord be called not a creature, but Son.
1:728
But the heretics understand badly what has been well said.
1:729
For if they understood and knew the character of Christianity, they would not have said the Lord of glory is a creature, nor would they have stumbled at what is well written.
1:730
Those men, then, neither knew nor understood; therefore, as it is written, they walk on in darkness; yet it is necessary for us to speak, that those men may in this too be shown to be foolish, and that we may not omit the refutation of their impiety, in the hope that perhaps they themselves may repent.
1:731
The character, then, of the faith in Christ is this: that the Son of God, being God the Word (for “in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was God”), being the Wisdom and Power of the Father (for “Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God”), this same One, at the consummation of the ages, became man for our salvation.
1:732
For John himself, having said, “In the beginning was the Word,” a little later said:
1:733
“and the Word became flesh” — which is equivalent to saying, He became man.
1:734
And the Lord said concerning Himself:
1:735
“Why do you seek to kill Me, a man who has told you the truth?” And Paul, having learned from Him, said:
1:736
“There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” And having become man and administered the things of men, and having put to rout and abolished death which was against us, He now sits at the right hand of the Father, being in Him, and the Father being in Him, as He always was and is throughout.
1:737
這就是從使徒、藉著列祖傳下來的特質;
This, then, is the character handed down from the apostles through the Fathers;
1:738
故此,人讀聖經時,就當察驗分辨:何時是論到道的神性,何時是論到祂屬人的事;
and it remains, therefore, when one reads the Scripture, to test and discern when it speaks concerning the divinity of the Word, and when concerning His human attributes;
1:739
lest, conceiving one thing for another, we go astray, as the Arians have suffered.
1:740
正如我們既認識祂是道,就知道「萬物是藉著祂造的,凡被造的,沒有一樣不是藉著祂造的」;又知道「諸天藉耶和華的命而造」;「祂發命醫治萬物」;我們既認識祂是智慧,就知道「神以智慧立地」,「父用智慧造了萬物」;
As, then, knowing Him to be the Word, we know that “all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made”; and, “By the Word of the Lord the heavens were established”; and, “He sends His Word, and heals all things”; and knowing Him to be Wisdom, we know that “God by wisdom founded the earth,” and “the Father made all things in wisdom”;
1:741
我們既認識祂是神,就信祂是基督;
and knowing Him to be God, we have believed that He is the Christ;
1:742
“a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
1:743
你喜愛公義,恨惡罪惡;
You have loved righteousness, and hated iniquity;
1:744
therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows.” And in Isaiah He says concerning Himself:
1:745
「主的靈在我身上,因為祂膏了我。」彼得也承認說:「你是基督,是永生神的兒子」;如此,我們既知道祂已成了人,就不否認那按屬人方式所論到祂的事,例如飢餓、口渴、被打、流淚、睡覺,末了又在十字架上為我們承受了死;
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me.” And Peter confessed, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”; thus, knowing Him to have become man, we do not deny the things said of Him in a human way, such as to hunger, to thirst, to be struck, to weep, to sleep, and at last to undergo upon the cross the death on our behalf;
1:746
for all these things are written concerning Him.
1:747
Thus too the word “He created,” as fitting to men, the Scripture did not hide, but spoke it.
1:748
For we men were created and made.
1:749
然而我們聽見「祂餓了、祂睡了、祂被打了」,並不否認祂的神性;
But as, hearing “He hungered, He slept, He was struck,” we do not deny His divinity;
1:750
so, hearing the word “He created,” it would be consistent to remember that, being God, He was created as man.
1:751
For it is proper to men to be created, just as also the aforesaid things, to hunger, and the like.
1:752
再者,還有另一句話,是說得好卻被他們領會錯了的;
For there is again that other saying, well said but ill understood by them;
1:753
I mean the saying, “Concerning that day or that hour no one knows, neither the angels, nor the Son” — it has a good meaning.
1:754
For those men suppose, from His saying “nor the Son,” that being ignorant He shows that He is a creature.
1:755
其實,正如祂說「祂造了我」是按屬人方式說的;
But just as, in saying “He created me,” He spoke in a human way;
1:756
so, in saying “nor the Son,” He spoke in a human way.
1:757
And the cause of His having spoken thus has its reasonableness.
1:758
因為祂照經上所記成了人,而無知乃是人所特有的,正如飢餓等事一樣(因人若不聽見、不學習,便不知道),所以祂也顯出人的無知,因祂已成了人;
For since He became man, as it is written, and it is proper to men to be ignorant, just as also to hunger and the rest (for they do not know unless they hear and learn), for this reason He also displays the ignorance of men, as having become man;
1:759
祂真有一個屬人的身體;
truly He has a human body;
1:760
and then, that having the ignorance of men in the body, having redeemed and cleansed it from all things, He might present to the Father the manhood perfect and holy.
1:761
亞流派人還能找到什麼藉口呢?他們還能想出什麼來發怨言呢?他們因不曉得「主用我作祂的作為」這話而被定罪。他們又顯為不明白「論到那日子,沒有人知道,連天使也不知道,子也不知道」這話。因為正如祂說「祂造了」是指那屬人的一面,就是祂成了人、被造了;
What further pretext will the Arians find? What else will they devise to murmur? They were condemned as not knowing the saying, “The Lord created me for His works.” And they were shown not to understand the saying, “Concerning that day no one knows, neither the angels, nor the Son.” For just as, in saying “He created,” He signifies the human — that He became man and was created;
1:762
照樣,祂說「我與父原為一」、「人看見了我,就是看見了父」、「我在父裡面,父在我裡面」,便是指那永恆性,以及與父同質的事;
so, in saying, “I and the Father are one,” and, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father,” and, “I am in the Father, and the Father in Me,” He signifies the eternity and the consubstantiality with the Father;
1:763
照樣,祂說「沒有人知道,子也不知道」,乃是再次以人的身分說話;
so, in saying, “No one knows, neither the Son,” He again speaks as man;
1:764
for it is proper to men to be ignorant.
1:765
But in saying, “No one knows the Father except the Son, nor the Son except the Father,” much more does He know the created things.
1:766
Now the disciples in the Gospel according to John said to the Lord:
1:767
“Now we know that You know all things.” It is clear, then, that there is nothing of which He is ignorant, being the Word through whom all things came to be.
1:768
And since that day too is among all things, it will assuredly come to be through Him, even though the Arians burst asunder ten thousand times by their own ignorance.
1:769
或者你要希奇:你既囑咐我把那封論聖靈所寫的書信加以節略、用簡短的話說明,怎麼卻看見我彷彿撇下了論聖靈的話,反去寫那駁斥那些對神的兒子不敬虔、稱祂為受造之物之人的文字;
Perhaps you will wonder how, when you charged me to abridge the letter written concerning the Holy Spirit and to set it forth in few words, you see me as it were leaving aside the discourse about this and writing against those who are impious toward the Son of God and call Him a creature;
1:770
but I am well assured you will not find fault, if you learn the reason; rather your piety will approve, seeing the reasonableness of it.
1:771
For since, as the Lord Himself said:
1:772
「保惠師並不是憑著自己說的;
“The Comforter will not speak from Himself;
1:773
祂無論聽見什麼,就說什麼;
but whatever He hears, He will speak;
1:774
祂要將受於我的告訴你們」;祂又吹了一口氣,把這從祂自己出來的賜給門徒,於是父照經上所記,將這靈澆灌在凡有血氣的人身上;
for He will take of Mine, and will declare it to you”; and He breathed and gave this from Himself to the disciples, and thus the Father poured it out upon all flesh according to what is written;
1:775
因這緣故,論到神的兒子的話便恰當地先被說出、被記下;
for this reason it was fittingly said and written first concerning the Son of God;
1:776
好叫我們能從關乎子的知識,恰當地得著關乎聖靈的知識;
so that from the knowledge concerning the Son we might rightly be able to have also the knowledge concerning the Spirit;
1:777
for whatever propriety of relation we have come to know of the Son toward the Father, the same we shall find the Spirit to have toward the Son.
1:778
And just as the Son says, “All that the Father has is Mine,” so we shall find all these things, through the Son, to be also in the Spirit.
1:779
父既指出子,說「這是我的愛子,我所喜悅的」,照樣,聖靈也是子的;
And as the Father showed forth the Son, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased,” so the Spirit is the Son's;
1:780
for “God has sent forth,” says the Apostle, “the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying:
1:781
Abba, Father.” And the marvel is this: just as the Son says, “The things that are Mine are the Father's,” so the Holy Spirit, which is said to be the Son's, is the Father's.
1:782
For the Son Himself says:
1:783
“When the Comforter comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, He will bear witness concerning Me.” And Paul writes:
1:784
“No one knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which dwells in him;
1:785
so also the things of God no one knows except the Spirit of God which is in Him.
1:786
我們所領受的,並不是世上的靈,乃是從神來的靈,好叫我們知道神開恩賜給我們的事。」在全部神聖經中,你都要發覺:那被稱為子的聖靈,這同一位也被稱為神的;
And we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is from God, that we might know the things freely given us by God.” And in all the divine Scripture you will find that the Holy Spirit, said to be the Son's, this same is said to be God's;
1:787
and this we have written in the foregoing.
1:788
乃是與父同質的;
but is consubstantial with the Father;
1:789
so neither could the Holy Spirit be a creature, but he too is impious who says this, because of its propriety of relation to the Son, and because from Him it is given to all, and the things which it has are the Son's.
1:790
這些話足以說服任何人,無論他何等好爭辯,叫他不再稱那在神裡面、又查透神深奧之事、且是從父藉著子所賜的,為神的受造之物;
These things, then, are sufficient to persuade anyone whatsoever, however contentious, no longer to call a creature of God that which is in God, and searches the depths of God, and is given from the Father through the Son;
1:791
lest from these things he be compelled also to call the Son a creature — the Word, the Wisdom, the Image, the Radiance, beholding whom one beholds the Father — and then go on to hear:
1:792
“He who denies the Son does not have the Father either.” For such a one will little by little say, like the fool:
1:793
“There is no God.” Nevertheless, in order that the refutation against the impious may be shown forth good from yet more proofs, from those very things by which the Son is shown not to be a creature, from these let us show also that the Spirit is not a creature.
1:794
受造之物是出於本無的,並有受造的起頭;
The creatures are from things that were not, and have a beginning of being;
1:795
for “in the beginning God made the heaven and the earth, and the things in them.”
1:796
But the Holy Spirit is from God, and is so called, as the Apostle said.
1:797
子既不是出於本無的,乃是出於神,便理當不能是受造之物;那麼聖靈也必然不是受造之物;
And if the Son, since He is not from things that were not, but from God, fittingly could not be a creature, it follows of necessity that neither is the Holy Spirit a creature;
1:798
since it has been confessed to be from God.
1:799
For the creatures are from things that were not.
1:800
再者,聖靈被稱為、也確是膏抹與印記;
And again, the Spirit is called, and is, anointing and seal;
1:801
for John writes:
1:802
「你們從祂所受的恩膏常存在你們心裡;
“And the anointing which you received from Him abides in you;
1:803
and you have no need that anyone teach you, but as His anointing, His Spirit, teaches you concerning all things.” And in the prophet Isaiah it is written:
1:804
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because He has anointed Me.” And Paul also writes:
1:805
“In whom also, having believed, you were sealed”; and again:
1:806
「不要叫神的聖靈擔憂,你們原是受了祂的印記,等候得贖的日子來到。」受造之物乃是在祂裡面受膏、受印的;
“Grieve not the Holy Spirit, in whom you were sealed unto the day of redemption.” Now the creatures are anointed and sealed in Him;
1:807
若受造之物是在祂裡面受膏、受印,那麼聖靈便不能是受造之物;
but if the creatures are anointed and sealed in Him, the Spirit could not be a creature;
1:808
for that which anoints is not like the things anointed.
1:809
因為這膏抹乃是子的氣息;
For this anointing is the breath of the Son;
1:810
so that he who has the Spirit may say:
1:811
“We are the fragrance of Christ.” And the seal stamps the image of the Son, so that he who is sealed has the form of Christ, the Apostle saying:
1:812
「我小子啊,我為你們再受生產之苦,直等到基督成形在你們心裡。」聖靈若是子的馨香與形狀,便顯然聖靈不能是受造之物;
“My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.” But if the Spirit is the fragrance and form of the Son, it is evident that the Spirit could not be a creature;
1:813
since the Son also, being in the form of the Father, is not a creature.
1:814
For just as he who has seen the Son sees the Father, so he who has the Holy Spirit has the Son, and having Him, he is a temple of God, Paul writing:
1:815
“Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in you?” And John says:
1:816
「神將祂的靈賜給我們,從此就知道我們是住在祂裡面,祂也住在我們裡面。」子既在父裡面,父也在祂裡面,並已被承認不是受造之物,那麼聖靈也斷然不能是受造之物;
“By this we know that we abide in God, and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.” And if the Son, being in the Father, in whom is also the Father, has been confessed not to be a creature, it is altogether necessary that neither is the Spirit a creature;
1:817
for in Him is the Son, and He is in the Son.
1:818
And again from this too it is good to perceive: if the Son of God is the Word, as there is one Father.
1:819
因為只有一位神,萬物都本於祂;又只有一位主耶穌基督;所以祂也被稱為、被記為獨生子;
For there is one God, from whom are all things, and one Lord Jesus Christ; wherefore He is also called and written only-begotten Son;
1:820
but the creatures are many and diverse — angels, archangels, cherubim, principalities, authorities, and the rest, as has been said.
1:821
And if, because the Son is not of the many, but is one, as the Father is one, and is not a creature, then assuredly the Spirit also (for from the Son one must take also the knowledge concerning the Spirit) could not be a creature.
1:822
For it is not of the many, but it too is one.
1:823
And this the Apostle knows, saying:
1:824
“All these things one and the same Spirit works, dividing to each one individually as He wills”; and a little later:
1:825
“By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, and were all made to drink of one Spirit.” And again, since from the Son one must take the knowledge concerning the Spirit, it would be fitting to bring forward the proofs also from Him.
1:826
the Son is, for He is in the Father, and the Father is in Him.
1:827
因為祂掌管、維繫萬有,經上記著說:「萬有也靠祂而立,無論是能見的、不能見的,並且祂在萬有之先。」至於受造之物,乃是處在各別的所在;
For He upholds and holds together all things, and it is written that “in Him all things consist, whether visible or invisible, and He is before all things.” But the creatures are in divided places;
1:828
sun and moon and the other luminaries in the firmament, angels in heaven, and men on the earth.
1:829
But if the Son, not being in divided places, but being in the Father, is everywhere, and being outside all things, is not a creature, it consequently follows that neither is the Spirit a creature, not being in divided places, but filling all things and being outside all things.
1:830
“Where shall I go from Your Spirit?” — as though it were not in a place, but outside all things, and in the Son, just as the Son also is in the Father.
1:831
And besides all these, still more from this will the Arian heresy be condemned, and again from the Son the knowledge concerning the Spirit will be recognized.
1:832
如此,子是創造者,正如父一樣;
The Son, then, is Creator as the Father is;
1:833
for “what I see the Father doing,” He says, “these I also do.”
1:834
誠然,「萬物是藉著祂造的,凡被造的,沒有一樣不是藉著祂造的」。子既如父一樣是創造者,便不是受造之物;
Indeed, “all things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made.” And if, being Creator as the Father is, the Son is not a creature;
1:835
又因萬物是藉著祂受造,祂便不屬於那被造之物;
and if, because through Him all things are created, He is not among the things created;
1:836
顯然聖靈也不是受造之物;
evidently neither is the Spirit a creature;
1:837
since concerning it too it is written in the hundred-and-third psalm:
1:838
「你收回他們的氣,他們就死亡,歸於塵土;
“You will take away their spirit, and they will fail, and to their dust they will return;
1:839
你發出你的靈,他們便受造,你使地面更換為新。」這話既如此記著,可見聖靈不是受造之物,乃是有分於創造的;
You will send forth Your Spirit, and they will be created, and You will renew the face of the earth.” And this being thus written, it is clear that the Spirit is not a creature, but is engaged in creating;
1:840
因為父是藉著道、在聖靈裡創造萬物,既然道在哪裡,聖靈也在那裡;
for the Father, through the Word, in the Spirit, creates all things, since where the Word is, there also is the Spirit;
1:841
and the things created through the Word have, from the Spirit through the Word, the strength of their being.
1:842
For thus it is written in the thirty-second psalm:
1:843
“By the Word of the Lord the heavens were established, and by the Spirit of His mouth all their power.” Indeed, the Spirit is thus inseparable from the Son, so as to leave no doubt from what is said.
1:844
For when the Word came to the prophet, the prophet spoke in the Spirit the things from the Word.
1:845
Thus it is also written: in the Acts, where Peter says:
1:846
“Brethren, the Scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold”; and in Zechariah, when the Word came to him, it is written:
1:847
“But receive My words and My ordinances, all that I command in My Spirit to the prophets.” And a little later, reproaching the people, He said:
1:848
“They made their heart disobedient, that they might not hear the laws and the words which the Lord Almighty sent forth in His Spirit by the hand of the former prophets.” And when Christ spoke in Paul, as he himself said:
1:849
“Do you seek a proof of Christ who speaks in me?” — none the less the Spirit was there, supplying him with the ability to speak.
1:850
“According to the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ unto me.” And again, when Christ spoke in him, he said:
1:851
「但知道聖靈在各城裡向我指證,說有捆鎖與患難等待著我。」因為聖靈不在道以外,乃在道裡面,藉著祂在神裡面;
“Except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.” For the Spirit is not outside the Word, but, being in the Word, through Him is in God;
1:852
so that the gifts are given in the Trinity.
1:853
For in the distribution of these, as he writes to the Corinthians, it is the same Spirit, and the same Lord, and the same God who works all things in all.
1:854
For the Father Himself, through the Word, in the Spirit, works and gives all things.
1:855
Indeed, in praying for the Corinthians, he prayed in the Trinity, saying:
1:856
“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.” For partaking of the Spirit, we have the grace of the Word, and in Him the love of the Father.
1:857
And as the grace of the Trinity is one, so the Trinity is indivisible.
1:858
One may also see this in the case of the holy Mary herself.
1:859
因為天使加百列奉差去報告那將要臨到她身上之道的降臨,便說「聖靈要臨到你身上」,因知道聖靈在道裡面;
For the angel Gabriel, sent to announce the descent of the Word that was to be upon her, said, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you,” knowing that the Spirit was in the Word;
1:860
and “the power of the Most High will overshadow you.”
1:861
For “Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.” And the Spirit being in the Word, it would be clear that the Spirit also was in God through the Word.
1:862
And thus, too, when the Spirit comes to be in us, the Son will come, and the Father, and they will make their abode in us.
1:863
因為三一是不可分的,其神性也是一個;
For the Trinity is indivisible, and its deity is one;
1:864
and there is one God over all, and through all, and in all.
1:865
這就是大公教會的信仰;
This is the faith of the catholic Church;
1:866
for in the Trinity the Lord founded and rooted it, saying to the disciples:
1:867
「你們要去,使萬民作門徒,奉父、子、聖靈的名給他們施洗。」聖靈若是受造之物,主就不會把它與父同列;
“Go, make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” But if the Spirit were a creature, He would not have ranked it with the Father;
1:868
ἵνα μὴ ᾖ.
lest the Trinity be unlike itself, with something strange and alien being ranked with it.
1:869
For what was lacking to God, that He should take to Himself a being of alien essence, and be glorified together with it? God forbid!
1:870
為要顯明那神聖的三一不是由相異之物,就是由造者與受造之物所組成的;
so that He might show that the holy Trinity does not consist of different things, that is, of creator and creature;
1:871
but its deity is one.
1:872
Having learned this, Paul taught that the grace given in it is one, saying:
1:873
「一主,一信,一洗。」既只有一洗,照樣也只有一信;
“One Lord, one faith, one baptism.” And as there is one baptism, so also there is one faith;
1:874
因為信入父的人,便在父裡面認識子,並認識那不在子以外的聖靈;
for he who believes in the Father knows the Son in the Father, and the Spirit, not outside the Son;
1:875
因這緣故,他也信入子,並信入聖靈;
and for this reason he believes also in the Son and in the Holy Spirit;
1:876
since the deity of the Trinity is one, known from the one Father.
1:877
This, then, is the character of the catholic faith.
1:878
But those who blaspheme against the Spirit, and call it a creature, if they do not repent from what has been said, let them at least, ashamed by what is yet to be said, sink down in shame.
1:879
If there is a Trinity, and the faith is in a Trinity, let them say whether it is always a Trinity, or whether there was a time when it was not a Trinity.
1:880
If, then, the Trinity is eternal, the Spirit is not a creature, being eternally together with the Word and in Him.
1:881
For the creatures were when they were not.
1:882
But if it is a creature, and the creatures are from things that were not, it is clear that there was a time when there was not a Trinity, but a Dyad.
1:883
And what could one say more impious than this? They say that the Trinity comes into being by change and progress, and that it was a Dyad, but awaited the genesis of a creature, that together with Father and Son it might be ranked and become a Trinity.
1:884
God forbid that such a thing should ever even enter the mind of Christians!
1:885
因為正如子是常存的,便不是受造之物;照樣,三一既是常存的,其中便沒有一樣是受造之物;
For as the Son, being always, is not a creature, so, the Trinity being always, there is nothing in it that is a creature;
1:886
wherefore the Spirit is not a creature.
1:887
因為三一向來如何,如今也是如何;
For as it always was, so it is also now;
1:888
and as it is now, so it always was, and the Trinity is, and in it Father, and Son, and Holy Spirit.
1:889
And there is one God the Father, who is over all, and through all, and in all, who is blessed forever.
1:890
如此,我便照你所囑咐的,把這些也用簡短的話寫下,差送過去;
I, then, as you indicated, having written down these things too in few words, have sent them;
1:891
你既是明達的,倘若這些裡頭仍有什麼缺欠,求你樂意補足;
but you, as one of understanding, if anything is lacking even in these, be willing to fill it up;
