Chapter 1. The vision which Isaiah saw.
1:2
他稱這預言為異象,或是因為他親眼看見了其中許多將要應驗的事;
He calls the prophecy a vision, either because he beheld with his sight many of the things that were to come to pass in it;
1:3
如同彌迦看見百姓四散;
as Micah saw the people scattered;
1:4
以西結也看見那被擄之事,以及那些敬拜太陽和搭模斯之人的不法;
and Ezekiel saw the captivity and the lawlessness of those who worshipped the sun and Thammuz;
1:5
or because the hearing granted to the prophets from God was in no way inferior to sight, but gave equal certainty—something not possible in the affairs of everyday life.
1:6
For that they heard in a manner different from the rest of men, he says:
1:7
He has added to me an ear to hear.
1:8
And he makes his word worthy of credence by saying 'vision,' and rouses the hearer, and refers him to the One who showed the realities.
1:9
For it was the custom of all those who conveyed God's messages to establish this before all else: that they speak nothing of their own, but that the things spoken are certain divine oracles and letters that have come down from heaven.
1:10
My tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
1:11
Do not, then, suppose that the letters belong to the pen, but to the right hand that holds it—that is, not to the tongue of David, but to the grace that moves it.
1:12
另一位先知也表明這同一件事,說:我本是牧人,他說,是修理桑樹的;
And another prophet, showing this same thing, said: I was a herdsman, he says, a dresser of sycamore-figs;
1:13
so that no one might reckon the things spoken to be of human wisdom.
1:14
And he was not content with this alone, but added yet something further, saying:
1:15
But truly I am filled with strength by the Spirit of the Lord, and with judgment and might.
1:16
For grace made them not only wise but also strong—not in the frame of the body, but in resolve.
1:17
For since they had to deal with a people bold and shameless, thirsting for the blood of prophets and practised in the slaughter of the saints, they needed with good reason great power, so as not to be dismayed by their unspeakable violence.
1:18
For this very reason he says to Jeremiah:
1:19
我使你成為鐵柱、銅牆;
I have set you as an iron pillar and as a wall of bronze;
1:20
You dwell in the midst of scorpions; do not be afraid at their presence, neither be dismayed.
1:21
And Moses too, when he was being sent, seems to me to have drawn back not only out of fear of Pharaoh, but most of all out of fear of the very people of the Jews.
1:22
無論如何,他與神說話,把那外邦人擱在一旁,竭力切望知道:當那些人不信他確是從神而來時,他該對他們說甚麼;
At any rate, conversing with God and leaving the barbarian aside, he sought with much eagerness to learn what he must say to them when they should disbelieve that he had indeed come from God;
1:23
and he received the signs for the sake of their conviction.
1:24
For if a single man so frightened him, and that after he had been shown kindness, what was he likely to feel when he considered that disorderly people? For this reason he received a Spirit not only of wisdom but also of power, and said:
1:25
I am filled with strength by the Spirit of the Lord, and with judgment and might.
1:26
The word of God came to Jeremiah the son of Chelkias.
1:27
The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkeshite.
1:28
For this very prophet too indicates by another expression the same thing as the former ones, calling the seizure by the Spirit a 'burden' (oracle).
1:29
For since, being taken hold of by the Spirit, they thus spoke whatever they spoke, he named the working of grace in this way.
1:30
For this reason Paul too everywhere sets at the head of his epistles the title of apostleship—which the prophets did
1:31
by saying 'vision' and 'word' and 'burden' and 'utterance'; this he accomplishes by means of the title of apostleship.
1:32
For just as he who says 'a vision' and 'the word of God' does not utter his own things, so too he who calls himself an apostle does not teach the things that come from himself, but the very things which the One who sent him commanded.
1:33
For it is the dignity of an apostle to introduce nothing of his own.
1:34
'Call no one teacher upon the earth;'
1:35
'for One is your Teacher, He who is in the heavens.'
1:36
showing that the whole origin of the doctrines among us took its root from above, from the Master of the heavens, even though it is men who minister to what is spoken.
1:37
As to how the prophets see these things which they see, it is not for us to say.
1:38
因為那異象的樣式,是無法用言語解釋的;
For it is not possible to explain in words the manner of the vision;
1:39
but that man alone knows it clearly, who has learned it by experience.
1:40
For if no one could ever set forth in words the works and affections of nature, how much less the manner of the Spirit's working.
1:41
But if, making use of faint images, one must venture to speak—not so as to set forth the matter clearly, but so as to convey it in a riddle—it seems to me that the same thing happens also in the case of the prophets: just as, if the nature of pure waters, receiving the sun's rays, should be lit up with brightness, so too the souls of the prophets, being first cleansed by their own virtue, receive the gift of the Spirit, and, made bright by that radiance, thus obtain the knowledge of things to come.
1:42
他為什麼要提到父親呢?或是因為名字相同的緣故,或是要我們明白:父親的卑微絲毫不能遮蔽兒子的德行;
Why does he make mention of the father? Either because of the sameness of names, or that we may learn that no lowliness of a father overshadows the virtue of a son;
1:43
nor is nobility this—to be born of great men—but rather that they themselves should become great.
1:44
And this man, though of an undistinguished father, became more illustrious than all, shining forth by the surpassing greatness of his own virtue.
1:45
Which he saw against Judaea and against Jerusalem.
1:46
Why did he mention each of the places separately? Because the punishments too came separately and at different times, since God wisely ordered this also—not to destroy all at once, but gently and little by little, so that by the punishment of those carried off the survivors might become more temperate.
1:47
But if they did not use the remedy as they ought, the blame lies not with the physician but with the sick.
1:48
祂常常這樣行,並且在每一世代都如此,並不將所有同時犯同樣罪的人一併懲治;
And He does this continually and in every generation, not chastising all together who commit the same sins at the same time;
1:49
否則我們全人類早就一同被除滅了;
for otherwise our whole race would long ago have been swept away beforehand;
1:50
祂向一些人在今世討回刑罰,這樣既為那些人在來世預備了較輕的懲罰,又為與他們同時代的人預先立下極有力的憑據,使他們向善改變;
but from some He exacts the penalty here, thereby both preparing for those very persons a lighter punishment there, and laying up beforehand for their contemporaries a most powerful motive for change to the better;
1:51
while those who are willing to gain nothing either from themselves or from such an ordering, He reserves for the inexorable and terrible day of judgment.
1:52
In the reign of Uzziah and Jotham, and Ahaz and Hezekiah, who reigned over Judaea.
1:53
And he sets down the time of necessity, referring the diligent hearer to the history of what had come to pass.
1:54
For thus the prophecy will be both more easily understood and clearer, if we learn in what state affairs stood, and in what condition the wounds of the Jews were, when these men prepared their remedies.
1:55
Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord has spoken.
1:56
The prelude is full of much wrath.
1:57
For unless the anger had been vehement and unspeakable, He would not, leaving aside men, have turned His word to the elements.
1:58
And He does this not only to display His anger, but also to shame with great excess those who were about to hear, showing that those honoured with reason are in worse case than the elements which are by nature without perception.
1:59
And this is a custom which other prophets also practise.
1:60
For this reason too the one sent to Jeroboam, leaving aside the king to whom he was sent, addresses the altar.
1:61
And Jeremiah too called upon the earth, saying:
1:62
O earth, earth, earth, write down this man, a man proscribed.
1:63
Hear, O ravines, foundations of the earth.
1:64
He does not set before them the benefit common to all men, which was their coming into being, but the special one, which was to be [chosen].
1:65
For everywhere God takes the lead in His benefactions, and just as when fashioning man He honoured him at the very beginning, though he had not yet come into being, saying:
1:66
我們要照著我們的形像、按著我們的樣式造人;
Let us make man according to our image and according to our likeness;
1:67
在新約之下,更是加倍地施予;
and under the New Covenant yet more greatly;
1:68
因為祂所尊榮的,不僅是那些毫無作為的人,更是那些行了無數惡事的人,藉著洗淨之重生的恩典;
for He honoured not only those who had wrought nothing, but even those who had wrought countless evils, through the regeneration of the washing;
1:69
so here too one may see that by adoption He honoured those who had not only achieved nothing, but had even fallen into sin.
1:70
Yet it is not that, because He honours before the labours, He deprives them after the labours; but even then He gives the greater rewards.
1:71
The things in Egypt, the things in the wilderness, the things in Palestine, He passed over in a single word.
1:72
For this is a custom with God, on account of the abundance of His benefactions, not to dwell little by little upon the recounting of what has been done.
1:73
They transgressed my law, He says; they forsook my commandments.
1:74
The ox knows its owner, and the ass its master's crib.
1:75
比較能加重控告,尤其當比較是取自不相等之物的時候;
Comparisons magnify the accusation, and especially when they are drawn from unequal things;
1:76
尼尼微人要在審判的時候與這世代一同起來,定這世代的罪;
The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation and shall condemn it;
1:77
and again: The queen of the south shall be raised up in the judgment and shall condemn this generation, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon.
1:78
And Jeremiah again says:
1:79
你們過到基提海島去察看;
Go to the isles of Chittim and see;
1:80
打發人往基達去,仔細留意,看看列國是否曾更換他們的神;
and send to Kedar, and consider diligently, whether the nations change their gods;
1:81
but my people has changed its glory, from which it will gain no profit.
1:82
He shows the unburdensomeness of the legislation, and how small a measure it requires of men—one which is easy even for irrational creatures to fulfil, and for the most senseless of irrational creatures at that.
1:83
But someone will say that those creatures have the faculty of recognition in their nature.
1:84
Yet it is possible for the things they accomplish by nature to be done by us out of deliberate choice.
1:85
牛認識主人;
The ox knows its owner;
1:86
he does not merely set before them the special character of the gift, but by the excess of their wickedness he also increases the accusation.
1:87
For just as He calls upon the elements to shame them, so again He compares them not with men but with irrational creatures, and with the most senseless of these, and shows them to be worse even than those.
1:88
So too Jeremiah does, bringing forward into the midst the turtledove and the swallow; and Solomon too, now sending the sluggard who lives an idle life to the ant, now to the bee.
1:89
It is an intensification of wickedness, when those who have been made His own, and after so many honours, and all at once, have gone over as deserters to wickedness.
1:90
He did not say Jacob, but Israel, so that by the virtue of the ancestor he might show the greater the ingratitude of the descendants.
1:91
For the one, by the virtue of his soul, drew to himself the blessing of that appellation, while they, through their transgression of the law, betrayed it.
1:92
我的百姓卻不理解我;
And my people has not understood me;
1:93
Me, He says, who am more manifest than the sun.
1:94
And this too is a custom with the prophets, to lament those who are sick with incurable maladies.
1:95
耶利米也多處這樣行;
So too Jeremiah in many places;
1:96
so too Christ, saying:
1:97
Woe to you, Chorazin; woe to you, Bethsaida.
1:98
Since this too is a form of teaching.
1:99
For him whom the word did not recover, lamentation has often set right.
1:100
Another addition to the accusation is the phrase 'and all,' and with emphasis.
1:101
He does not slander their birth, but shows that they were evil from their earliest age.
1:102
For just as John, saying:
1:103
毒蛇啊,毒蛇的種類啊——他並不是貶低他們的本性本身;
Serpents, offspring of vipers—does not dishonour their nature itself;
1:104
所以要結出與悔改相稱的果子——他們若是天生、生來就是這樣〔他就不會這樣說了〕;
Make therefore fruits worthy of repentance—if they were such by nature and from birth [he would not have said this];
1:105
Evil seed—he does not slander their birth.
1:106
He did not say 'Transgressors of the law,' but 'Lawless ones,' as being in no better state than those who have in no way received a law.
1:107
But he makes plain the difference of their deliberate choice.
1:108
You have forsaken the Lord and provoked Him to anger.
1:109
因為單單神的名,就足以成為對他們的控告;
For the very name of God was enough to be an accusation against them;
1:110
which is the very charge Jeremiah brings against them when he says:
1:111
That they departed even from Him, and were nailed fast to demons.
1:112
And this heightens the accusation, that though He was the common
1:113
Master of all, He was at that time made known to them alone.
1:114
They were estranged and turned backward.
1:115
Why should you be stricken any more, adding to your iniquities? It is the greatest condemnation, when men become no better even through their punishments.
1:116
And this too is a kind of benefaction—to chastise.
1:117
因為他們不能說:祂只是尊榮他們、恩待他們,卻任憑他們犯罪;
For neither could they say that He merely honored and did good to them, but let them go on sinning;
1:118
but rather He both drew them on by honors and brought them to their senses by the fear of chastisements, and in both cases they remained sick with an incurable disease.
1:119
祂施展了各樣的醫治,或割、或烙;
He displayed every form of healing—cutting, cauterizing;
1:120
yet not even so did the disease yield, which is the surest sign that a sickness is incurable—that it cannot even receive treatment.
1:121
Every head is turned to pain, and every heart to grief.
1:122
From the feet to the head there is no soundness in it—neither wound, nor bruise, nor festering sore.
1:123
接著他述說那些懲罰與刑罰;
Then he tells of the chastisements and the punishments;
1:124
for this too is no less a kind of benefaction and of the honor that was shown toward them.
1:125
For I afflicted them all, He says, and cast them into grief.
1:126
既然每一個頭都變為疼痛,怎麼又說並無傷口、也無青腫呢?當身體其餘部分健康時,傷口才顯出是傷口;
If every head is turned to pain, how is there neither wound nor bruise? A wound appears as a wound when the rest of the body is healthy;
1:127
but if the whole should chance to be one sore, the ulcer would no longer be visible.
1:128
This, then, is what he wishes to show: that the whole body was ulcerated, and it was not that one part was healthy while another was swollen, but all was inflammation, all was one single bruise.
1:129
There is no way to apply an emollient.
1:130
This is heavier than the former.
1:131
For to be sick is not so grievous as, being sick, to be unable even to be cured—and especially when the physician is such a one as He.
1:132
Neither oil, nor bandages.
1:133
為要使這話語更為有力,他便持續用這比喻;
So as to make the language emphatic, he continued in the metaphor;
1:134
for this is its special excellence.
1:135
These things he announces not as having already happened, but foretells as things to come.
1:136
And the prophets employ this custom, at once striking fear into the hearer and displaying the power of their own truth.
1:137
For just as things past cannot but have happened, so things future, when spoken by the prophets, cannot but come to pass—unless perchance those who are about to be chastised should repent.
1:138
Your cities are burned with fire.
1:139
For He did not utterly destroy them, but left standing the remnants of the barbarian conflagration, which were the more able to touch the sight of those who beheld them.
1:140
Your land, strangers devour it before your eyes, and it is made desolate, overthrown by alien peoples.
1:141
It is an intensification of calamity, when men become spectators of their own disasters and do not learn of them merely by report.
1:142
The daughter of Zion shall be left as a tent in a vineyard, and as a lodge in a cucumber field.
1:143
Images too have great force, and especially those in Scripture, for the vivid extension of what is said.
1:144
And he calls Jerusalem the daughter of Zion also because it lies beneath the mountain.
1:145
As a tent in a vineyard, and as a lodge in a cucumber field.
1:146
For when the fruit has been taken away and the husbandmen carried off, the building of the city is thenceforth superfluous.
1:147
This is a riddle of their weakness and of their being forsaken.
1:148
For when there is no one to help, then of necessity they are shut up, awaiting only the security afforded by the walls.
1:149
And unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we should have become as Sodom, and been made like unto Gomorrah.
1:150
It is ever the custom of the prophets not only to foretell those dreadful things which the offenders are about to suffer, but also those which they deserved to suffer, so that even at the very moment of punishment they may know they owe many thanks to God, paying a penalty far less than, and not equal to, their offenses.
1:151
所以他在這裡也如此說:他們的罪所招致的,並不止於前面所提的那些,乃是要求全然的滅絕,以及整個族類徹底的消亡;
This, then, is what he says here also: that their sins did not merely call for the things mentioned, but demanded utter ruin and the complete annihilation of the entire race;
1:152
which indeed also befell the people of Sodom.
1:153
But the loving-kindness of God did not permit this to come to pass, bringing upon them a punishment far less than their sin.
1:154
既然舊約與新約之間有極深的親緣,保羅也就合宜地引用了這段話;
And since there is much kinship between the Old and the New, fittingly Paul too made use of this passage;
1:155
and he spoke it more aptly than the prophet.
1:156
For just as at that time, had not the great
1:157
mercy of God intervened, all would have been swept away, so also at the time of Christ's coming, had not the things of grace appeared, all would have suffered things more grievous than these.
1:158
祂給我們留下了餘種;
And He left us a seed;
1:159
he means those who were saved from the captivity.
1:160
Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; give heed to the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah.
1:161
Since he had said that they deserved to suffer the things of Sodom, he shows that they also dared to commit the deeds of Sodom.
1:162
Therefore he names them also by the common appellation.
1:163
For if this were not so, his words would have had no fit occasion.
1:164
That it is not against the Sodomites that he now directs his speech, but against the Jews, calling them by the fellowship of that appellation, the things said afterward make clear.
1:165
For he makes mention of sacrifices and offerings and the rest of the legal worship, of which there was not even a trace among the Sodomites.
1:166
'To the law of our God'—that is, to the rebuke, he says.
1:167
To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices to Me? says the Lord.
1:168
I am full of the whole burnt offerings of rams, and I desire not the fat of lambs, nor the blood of bulls and of goats.
1:169
The forty-ninth psalm throughout closely resembles this passage, woven of the same thoughts though in other words.
1:170
「祂要向上呼喚諸天與大地,好審判祂的子民」,這與「諸天哪,要聽;大地啊,要側耳而聽,因為主已經說話了」是相同的意思;
'He shall call to the heaven above, and to the earth, that He may judge His people'—this is equivalent to 'Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord has spoken';
1:171
「我並不因你的祭物責備你,你的燔祭常在我面前」;
'Not for your sacrifices will I reprove you, for your whole burnt offerings are continually before Me';
1:172
'To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices? says the Lord.'
1:173
And again David says:
1:174
「我不從你家中取公牛,也不從你圈內取公山羊」;
'I will not accept calves out of your house, nor he-goats out of your flocks';
1:175
'Whole burnt offerings of rams and the fat of lambs and the blood of bulls and of goats I do not desire.'
1:176
For since, being continually accused of being destitute of all other virtue, they would put forward their sacrifices as though it were the greatest defense, on the ground that they offered them continually, fittingly each prophet—or rather all the others as well—casts them out of this defense.
1:177
Whence it is clear that these sacrifices were not given as an end in themselves, but so as to become for them a means of training toward the rest of their way of life.
1:178
But since they neglected the pressing necessities and busied themselves with these things instead, God declares that henceforth He will no longer accept even these.
1:179
'Nor though you come to appear before Me.'
1:180
'Even if you present yourselves,' He says, 'at the Temple.'
1:181
'For who has required these things at your hands?' And indeed a whole book, called Leviticus, is composed, laying down laws concerning the exactness of the sacrifices.
1:182
And in Deuteronomy too, and in many other places, many laws concerning these matters are scattered about.
1:183
'Who has required these things at your hands?' — that you may learn that it was not God's primary will to legislate such things, but rather the legislation concerning them took its beginning from their own weakness.
1:184
因為正如他本不願一個已與丈夫結合的妻子被休棄,然而為了除去更大的惡——免得人們既未被禁止休妻,反倒被逼在家中殺害他們所恨惡的妻子——他就容許了那較輕的;
For just as He did not wish a wife once joined to her husband to be cast out, yet, cutting off a greater evil — lest men, being not forbidden to divorce, should be driven to slay the women they kept within and hated — He conceded the lesser;
1:185
so too here, forbidding sacrifice to demons, He accepted what He did not will, in order that He might accomplish what He did will.
1:186
This very thing, then, the prophet Micah again pointed out when he said:
1:187
'Did you offer to Me slain beasts and sacrifices for forty years? says the Lord.'
1:188
'These are not the things which I commanded your fathers.'
1:189
For since the demons also were served in this manner, He too, that no occasion of ruin might thence arise for the weaker sort, continually declares these things through all the prophets.
1:190
For those demons, even when nothing was given, were indignant, and continually pressed upon men, demanding the savour and the smoke, and saying:
1:191
'For this was the portion we obtained.'
1:192
但他起初並未索求,及至他吩咐時,也顯明他容許這事並非出於自己的心願;
But He neither asked from the beginning, and when He did command, He showed that it was not from His own will that He permitted this;
1:193
不僅如此,他還迅速將這些廢除,甚至在人正獻上的時候也不悅納;
and not only in this way, but also by quickly abolishing them, and by not accepting them even while they were being performed;
1:194
and through all things He plainly showed, once for all, that this manner of worship was far beneath His majesty.
1:195
This, then, is what He now says: that it was for your sakes I endured this, not that I Myself had need of these things.
1:196
'You shall not continue to tread My court.'
1:197
Either He foretells the captivity, or He forbids this also to them, since they entered not with a right disposition.
1:198
'If you bring Me fine flour, it is vain.'
1:199
因為在誡命中,有些是為其自身的緣故而吩咐去行的,有些則是為別的緣故;
For of the commandments, some were ordained to be done for their own sake, and others for the sake of something else;
1:200
例如,認識神、不可殺人、不可姦淫,以及一切這類的事,都是為其本身所帶的益處而立的;
as, for instance, to know God, not to kill, not to commit adultery, and all such things, were legislated for the benefit inherent in them;
1:201
but to sacrifice, and to offer incense, and to keep the sabbath, and all such things, again, were commanded not that these very things might simply be done, but that through the practice of them men might be led away from the service of demons.
1:202
既然這些人行了這些事,卻未從中得著益處,反倒仍舊被釘牢於鬼身上,那麼這些事被棄絕也是理所當然的;
Since, then, these people performed these things, yet reaped from them no gain, but were still nailed fast to the demons, with good reason these things too are cast out;
1:203
since one might with reason cut down even a tree that has leaves and branches but is barren of fruit.
1:204
For the husbandman bestows all his care upon the plant, not for the sake of the bark and the stem, but that he may enjoy the fruits.
1:205
'Incense is an abomination to Me.'
1:206
Do you see that He rejoiced not in the nature of the things offered, but examined the disposition of those who brought them? For this reason He called the smoke and the savour from Noah's sacrifice 'an odour of a sweet smell,' but the incense here 'an abomination.'
1:207
For, as I said, it is not the substance of the gifts, but the disposition of those who offer them, that He seeks.
1:208
'Your new moons and your sabbaths.'
1:209
It is to be observed that He casts out none of the necessary things, but these very things which Christ, when He came, also abolished.
1:210
Wherefore Paul too, using more vigorous language when he contended against the Jews, set down not only these things but many others besides, and declared that those who show forth nothing of their own gain nothing thence, speaking thus:
1:211
'But if you are called a Jew, and rest upon the law, and boast in God, and know His will, and approve the things that are excellent, being instructed out of the law.'
1:212
'For circumcision indeed profits, if you keep the law;'
1:213
'but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.'
1:214
他說:那些受託保管律法的人,就是連因受託這事,也未得著甚麼益處,因為他們不信;
And he said that not even from having been entrusted with the law did those to whom it was entrusted reap any profit, since they disbelieved;
1:215
the very thing which David also, hinting at it in another way, said:
1:216
'But to the sinner God said:'
1:217
'Why do you declare My statutes?' For since they gloried greatly, up and down, in the hearing of the law, while being destitute of its practice, Paul too cast them out of their boasting, saying:
1:218
'You then who teach another, do you not teach yourself? You who preach that a man should not steal, do you steal?' And David likewise, saying:
1:219
'When you saw a thief, you consented with him, and with adulterers you set your portion.'
1:220
'And the great day I cannot bear.'
1:221
He means Pentecost, the Feast of Tabernacles, the Passover, and the rest of the feasts.
1:222
'My soul hates fasting, and idleness, and your feasts.'
1:223
He converses with them in a more human manner.
1:224
'You have become to Me a surfeit;'
1:225
For this shows His unspeakable long-suffering, and that He bore with them though they sinned many times, and did not proceed against them until they who had transgressed by the excess of their wickedness themselves provoked Him.
1:226
'I will no longer pass over your sins.'
1:227
This is the same as that which was said by David:
1:228
'These things you did, and I kept silence.'
1:229
'When you stretch out your hands to Me, I will turn away My eyes from you;'
1:230
'and though you multiply your supplication, I will not hearken.'
1:231
Whence it is plain that there is no benefit in prayer, even when it is long, when he who prays persists in his sins.
1:232
For nothing is equal to virtue and to the voice that comes from works.
1:233
'For your hands are full of blood;'
1:234
yet He did not say 'murderous,' but:
1:235
'full of blood,' showing that they made a practice of sin, and everywhere with intensity.
1:236
And this too belongs to His gentleness — that while threatening, He makes His defence.
1:237
For He sets forth the causes for which He does not accept the prayer.
1:238
'Wash yourselves, become clean.'
1:239
他既說了「我必不再赦免你們的罪」,又指明他們患了無可救藥的病,卻仍給予勸勉;
Having said 'I will no longer pass over your sins,' and having shown them to be sick with an incurable sickness, He gives counsel;
1:240
does He bring in a means of correction? It is God's custom, even when He threatens, to deny salvation, so as to increase the fear, and yet not to end the discourse there, but to hold out kindly hopes, and thereby again to lead men back to repentance.
1:241
And one may see this happening everywhere.
1:242
In the case of the Ninevites, however, He did it not by words but by deeds.
1:243
For in words He promised nothing kindly, but let the punishment lie bare in the threat; yet when all those barbarians displayed what was their part, He quickly loosed His anger.
1:244
So too again in the psalm David says:
1:245
因為我先前已說過,這一段自始至終,全然與那開端相似;
for I said before that throughout, entirely, this resembles the prologue;
1:246
「你們要洗濯、自潔」,是在那威嚇之後說的;
'Wash yourselves, become clean,' after the threats;
1:247
so too that one, after having said:
1:248
'I will reprove you, and set your iniquities before your face,' and then he added:
1:249
'The sacrifice of praise shall glorify me, and there is the way wherein I will show them the salvation of my God.' By 'praise' he means the giving of glory through works, and the true knowledge that leads to Him.
1:250
By 'praise' he means the giving of glory through works, and the knowledge that leads to Him.
1:251
But lest, when they heard 'Wash yourselves, be clean,' they should suppose he meant the customary purifications, he added:
1:252
'Put away the wickednesses from your souls before my eyes, cease from your wickednesses.'
1:253
He showed how easy virtue is, and the freedom of the will, for it lay within their own power to change.
1:254
Thus, through their great wickedness, they had cast out even the knowledge of virtue.
1:255
So too the prophet David says:
1:256
'Come, children, hearken unto me.'
1:257
For this science is higher than all others and requires the greater diligence, inasmuch as it has more things that hinder it: the tyranny of nature, the sloth of the will, the plots of demons, and the tumult of affairs.
1:258
'None other shall be reckoned in comparison with him.'
1:259
'He found out all the way of knowledge.'
1:260
That is to say, to avenge those who are wronged, which requires much labour and a vigilant soul.
1:261
因為使公義蒙蔽的事甚多:賄賂、無知、權勢的濫用、顧忌情面、懼怕,以及對權貴的逢迎;
For many are the things that overshadow justice: bribery, ignorance, the abuse of power, human respect, fear, and the flattery of persons;
1:262
and there is need of much watchfulness.
1:263
這比前一件更難;
This is more than the former;
1:264
for it demands not only the reckoning of what is just, but also the carrying of it to completion.
1:265
'Judge the fatherless, and do justice to the widow.'
1:266
God takes great account that no one should suffer wrong, and yet greater account when, besides suffering wrong, some are also clothed with another calamity.
1:267
因為守寡與孤苦,本身就已叫人難以承受;
For widowhood and orphanhood are of themselves unbearable;
1:268
but when they are also insulted by others, the shipwreck is doubled.
1:269
'And come, let us reason together, saith the Lord.'
1:270
It should be observed that everywhere in the prophets God seeks nothing so much as the defending of those who are wronged.
1:271
So also elsewhere, as in Micah, when the Jews say:
1:272
'Shall I give my firstborn for my ungodliness, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?' he added, saying:
1:273
'It has been told you, O man, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: only to do justice, and to love mercy, and to be ready to walk after the Lord your God.'
1:274
And again the prophet David said:
1:275
'I will sing of mercy and judgment unto thee, O Lord.'
1:276
Having first armed them with acts of righteousness, He then draws them to the tribunal; and having taught them how they might strip off the charges, He then demands the reckoning, so that He might not condemn them stripped bare of any defence.
1:277
He that sits in judgment becomes both advocate and physician.
1:278
Then, showing that even if we accomplish great things, we still have need of His loving-kindness for the deliverance from our sins, he says:
1:279
'Though your sins be as scarlet, I will make them white as snow.'
1:280
He takes qualities diametrically opposed to each other, and promises Himself to transform them into their contrary.
1:281
'And though they be as crimson, I will make them white as wool.'
1:282
Great is the power of the protection of widows, if indeed it not only frees from vice a soul so defiled as to have taken on the very dye of wickedness, but even renders it thus radiant.
1:283
'if you hearken to me, you shall eat the good things of the land.'
1:284
'But if you will not, neither hearken to me, the sword shall devour you.'
1:285
'For the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things.'
1:286
因為對那些較為屬肉體的人來說,脫離罪愆並不像享受今生看為美好之物那樣叫人渴慕、易於領會,所以祂便將今生的福分連同那屬靈的一併應許給他們;
For since to the more carnal-minded the deliverance from sins is not so desirable and readily grasped as the enjoyment of the things that seem good in the present life, He promises these things along with those;
1:287
for this too comes from that.
1:288
Then, showing that virtue is easy, He makes it rest solely in the willing.
1:289
And that He might not slacken them by the promise of good things, He again shuts up the discourse in things fearful, making it worthy of belief by the power of Him who pronounced these things.
1:290
'How is the faithful city Zion become a harlot?' Here is the anguish of the speaker, and the great insensibility of the Jews, and the wonderment that what had happened had come to pass beyond all expectation.
1:291
Such things Paul too expresses in perplexity concerning the Galatians, saying:
1:292
'I marvel that you are so soon removed.'
1:293
which, in the manner of an accusation, is also a form of exhortation, calling back to virtue those who are being summoned.
1:294
For even though what is said is marvellous, praise is mingled with the accusation, making the accusation the more severe.
1:295
For we do not so blame those who are nothing and pursue a base life, as those who seemed at first to be earnest, but afterward display the deeds of the wicked.
1:296
He here calls her a harlot, not hinting at bodily licentiousness, but at ingratitude toward God, which is more grievous than that fornication.
1:297
For there it is a man who is outraged, but here it is God who is set at nought.
1:298
這位先知如此行,其餘眾先知也都如此行;
And this he does, both this prophet and all the other prophets;
1:299
既然神也俯就自己,以丈夫的身分待這城,藉此顯明祂對他們那說不盡的慈愛;
since God also deigned to stand toward the city in the place of a husband, thereby showing the unspeakable love He has for them;
1:300
他們也屢屢用夫妻之間的話語來論說,並非要把這道理拉低到人間粗俗的地步,乃是要藉著他們所熟悉的事,牽引他們的手,領他們認識神那慈憐的愛;
and they often discourse as of husband and wife, not that they might drag the discourse down to human grossness, but that through matters familiar to them they might lead them by the hand to the knowledge of God's tender affection;
1:301
at the same time they wish also to lay hold of them by the shamefulness of the appellation.
1:302
這就是說,敬虔而滿有各樣德行;
that is, godly and full of every virtue;
1:303
由此也可看明,他所說的並非身體的淫亂;
so that from this too it is clear that he does not speak of the fornication of bodies;
1:304
因為與妓女相對而立的,正是這樣的品格;
for such was that which stood in contrast to the harlot;
1:305
but now, showing that by 'fornication' he hints at impiety, he has set down its opposite, namely faith.
1:306
that is, full of righteousness.
1:307
Again a very great charge: not that they deserted to complete vice, but that they betrayed complete virtue, and casting from their hands all at once the whole wealth of good things, were brought down to the utmost poverty of evils.
1:308
'in which righteousness lodged in her.'
1:309
'It lodged, it made its dwelling'—that is, it was planted, it was rooted, it was diligently practised by all the citizens.
1:310
He dwells upon the former praises, at once heightening the accusation that arises from the change, and at the same time holding out good hopes and showing that it is easy to recover them again.
1:311
'Your silver is worthless.'
1:312
that is, counterfeit, spurious, adulterated.
1:313
'Your tavern-keepers mix the wine with water.'
1:314
Since in his opening he had not named their vice according to its kind, but only that they had rebelled, and that they were an evil seed and lawless sons—which seemed to be more of a reproach than an accusation—
1:315
here he sets down the charges themselves according to their kind, and first that which is first and midmost and last of evils, namely covetousness and the fraudulent dealing in contracts.
1:316
But some, not understanding the unspeakable wisdom of God, took what was said in an allegorical sense.
1:317
他們說,那偉大而崇高的以賽亞,斷不會為兌換銀錢者的奸詐和酒販子的敗壞而發論;
For, they say, the great and lofty Isaiah would not have discoursed about the roguery of money-changers and the corrupt practices of tavern-keepers;
1:318
But here by 'silver' he means the oracles of God, and by 'wine' the teaching, which they were fouling by introducing their own doctrines.
1:319
For my part, I neither dishonor this interpretation, and yet I affirm that the other is the truer one.
1:320
For not only is it not unworthy of the prophet to discourse concerning these matters, but it is exceedingly worthy both of him and of the loving-kindness of God.
1:321
And what need is there to say much? Indeed, when—
1:322
when the only-begotten Son of God came bearing lofty teachings and was about to plant the manner of life proper to the angels, He too discoursed not a little concerning measures and things that seem more trifling than these—greetings, and seats in the midst, and the first places at table.
1:323
For these things that seem small, when neglected, become great kindling for sins.
1:324
But if these things had to be set right under the New Covenant, much more under the Old, when the hearers were also cruder, and their whole life was rectified from this starting-point—the people being thus the more instructed in these very matters, to keep far from all injustice, and in nothing to overreach one's neighbor, nor to wear down the poverty of those in lower estate through the knavery of petty trade.
1:325
所以,當這些事被忽略時,城邑屢屢傾覆,掌權者從寶座上被摔下,並且興起了不可調和的戰爭;
When these things, then, were neglected, cities were often overturned, rulers were cast down from their thrones, and implacable war arose;
1:326
just as, when they were rightly ordered, there was much peace and good order and security, leading men by the hand toward virtue.
1:327
'Your rulers are disobedient.'
1:328
It is a sign of the greatest disease and perversion, when the physicians themselves aggravate the maladies.
1:329
因為掌權者的本分乃是抑制百姓的紛亂,將他們調整到當有的樣式,並使他們順從律法;
For it belongs to rulers to check the disorders of the people, to reduce them to what is fitting, and to make them obedient to the law;
1:330
但當他們自己率先違犯律法時,又怎能作別人的師傅呢?因為「他們悖逆」這話的意思是:他們不服從律法,不容忍誡命;
but when they themselves are the first to transgress the laws, how could they become teachers to others? For the word 'They disobey' means: they are not persuaded by the law, they do not endure the commandments;
1:331
which Paul also charges when he says:
1:332
'You then who teach another, do you not teach yourself?' When therefore the root is corrupted, what good is there to expect concerning the branches? 'Partners of thieves.'
1:333
這是罪狀上的加增,就是他們非但不抑制那些惡事,反而抵擋良善;
An added accusation, that not only do they not restrain the terrible deeds, but they even work against them;
1:334
not only do they not war against the thieves, but they even cooperate with them, pursuing wickedness in a manner diametrically opposed to the virtue that befits a ruler.
1:335
Another grievous form of avarice, having a specious pretext, but under the guise of goodwill displaying the utmost greed.
1:336
Bearing grudges against their enemies, eager to requite those who have wronged them—which is the greatest form of wickedness.
1:337
Wherefore not in the New Covenant only, but also in the Old, it is forbidden with much earnestness.
1:338
For 'Let none of you,' He says, 'bear malice in your hearts, each against his neighbor's wickedness.'
1:339
For most of all, indeed, even the common man, but far more the ruler, must be pure of this vice, and be released from voting against those on trial out of hostility, lest the harbor become a reef.
1:340
That is, they do not stand up for them, so that they may obtain what is just.
1:341
'And they do not attend to the judgment of widows.'
1:342
It must be observed that it is not the doing of evil only, but also the not working of good, that is reckoned in the rank of wickedness—just as also in the New Covenant.
1:343
因為那些不給飢餓者食物的人被送入地獄的火裡,並非因為他們奪取了別人的東西,乃是因為他們沒有把自己的分給有需要的人;
For those who did not feed the hungry are sent into the fire of Gehenna, not because they seized what belonged to others, but because they did not give of their own to those in need;
1:344
so also these men are now accused, not because they overreach, nor because they oppress, but because they do not stretch out a hand to those who need their help.
1:345
'Therefore thus says the Sovereign Lord of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel:'
1:346
And He has not simply set down 'the Mighty One,' but is reminding them both of the benefits granted beyond their hopes and of the grievous chastisements they had endured.
1:347
For since, often sinning much and enjoying much long-suffering, they were falling into slackness, He wishes to make this clear: that He is able to proceed against them whenever He wills, and needs neither seasons nor times, but all things are ready and prepared for Him.
1:348
'Woe to the mighty in Israel;'
1:349
'for my wrath shall not cease against my adversaries.'
1:350
For what is more wretched than those who have God as their foe? And He said 'It shall not cease,' not to cast them into despair, but so that, having increased their fear, He might call them to repentance.
1:351
'The wrath shall not cease'—this is more fearful.
1:352
For nothing is so wont to provoke God as the injustice committed against the poor by such men.
1:353
He said this not simply disparaging power, but the power directed toward evil.
1:354
And by 'strength' here he does not mean that of the body, but the dominance that comes from the abundance of one's affairs.
1:355
'And I will execute judgment upon my enemies.'
1:356
「我必刑罰我的仇敵」,祂稱窮人的仇敵為祂自己的仇敵,因為他們欺凌窮人;
'I will chastise my enemies,' calling His enemies the enemies of the poor, because of their being insolent toward them;
1:357
and this He said, that you might learn the greatness of the injustice.
1:358
'And I will bring my hand upon you, and I will purge you unto purity.'
1:359
That you may learn that, whatever be the wrath of God and the punishment, it comes not for evil and merely to exact a penalty, but that even the chastened themselves may become better.
1:360
'And I will purge you,' He says, 'unto purity.'
1:361
所以,該憂傷的並不是在我們受管教的時候,乃是在我們犯罪的時候;
Therefore it is not when we are chastised, but when we sin, that it is just to grieve;
1:362
for the one works defilement, but the other purification.
1:363
But what does 'unto purity' mean? So that there be not even a trace of a stain in you.
1:364
For what fire is to gold, that punishment is to the slothful.
1:365
'But the disobedient I will destroy, and I will remove all the lawless from you, and all the proud I will humble.'
1:366
'For those who are incurably diseased,' He says, 'and yield not even to punishments, shall perish.'
1:367
For what profit is there in the life of these, when both against themselves and against others they plot in their living? But those who from the punishment of those men are able to become better shall remain.
1:368
It seems to me that here he also hints at the captivity.
1:369
'And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as from the beginning.'
1:370
Here he speaks of the return.
1:371
For when those incurably diseased have been removed, and those able to receive care have been set right, then opportunely the remaining form of healing is added—the superintendence of approved rulers and the bringing-in of good counselors—so that, the body yielding to the remedies and the physicians being of the best, the parts of the city may from every side return to health.
1:372
For it is no small form of benefit to obtain good rulers.
1:373
'And after this you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful mother-city, Zion.'
1:374
And yet nowhere do we find this name applied to the city of Jerusalem.
1:375
What then should we say? That here he speaks of the appellation drawn from the deeds themselves.
1:376
And this will contribute to us not a little, when the Jews demand of us the interpretation of 'Emmanuel.'
1:377
因為以賽亞既說基督要如此得名,而祂卻無處被如此稱呼,我們便可向他們說:他的意思乃是那從事實而來的意涵就是一個名字;
For since Isaiah said that Christ would be so named, but nowhere is He so named, we might say to them that he meant the signification drawn from the deeds to be a name;
1:378
'For with judgment shall her captivity be saved, and with mercy.'
1:379
'With judgment,' that is, with justice and chastisement and punishment of the enemies.
1:380
'With mercy,' that is, with much loving-kindness.
1:381
此處祂應許給他們兩樣極大的恩賜:既叫那些擄掠他們的人受到刑罰,又叫他們自己享受豐盛的興盛——這兩樣中的每一樣,即或單獨而論,都足以帶來最大的喜樂;
Here He promises them two very great gifts: both that those who carried them away should pay the penalty, and that they themselves should enjoy much prosperity—each of which, even by itself, is able to furnish the greatest pleasure;
1:382
but when both run together, the gladness would become unspeakable.
1:383
And besides, wishing to show that even after the long captivity they are brought back to their own land not because of having paid a worthy penalty and having shorn off their sins, but because of His own loving-kindness, and that their salvation is more of mercy than of recompense and requital, He added:
1:384
'And the lawless and the sinners shall be crushed together.'
1:385
This too is a third form of benefit: that there should be no one to lead astray and to drag toward deception, but that the teachers of wickedness should be put out of the way.
1:386
'And those who forsake the Lord shall be consumed.'
1:387
'But the ungodly,' He says, 'shall perish.'
1:388
'For now they shall be put to shame by their idols, on which they had set their desire.'
1:389
有些人竟嘗試將此處所說的話也套用於當下的時勢;
Some indeed attempt to fit what is here spoken to the present season as well;
1:390
but we shall neither find fault with them nor depart from the natural sequence of the text.
1:391
For these are the things which he says shall come to pass at the onset of the enemies.
1:392
For when the barbarian overruns the land and besieges the city, holding all as it were caught in the midst of nets, and there is none to defend and to beat off that gathering cloud—because God has forsaken them—then fittingly, even from the very
1:393
experience of these very events, great shame shall be poured out upon those who serve the idols.
1:394
'On which they had set their desire'—that is, concerning the things about which they had been so zealous, he says.
1:395
'And they shall be ashamed of their graven images, which they themselves made.'
1:396
In the form of a narrative he sets forth the accusation.
1:397
For it was enough, he says, even before the outcome of their wounds, that the very manner of such idol-making should of itself put them to shame.
1:398
For what is more shameful than to make oneself a god? 'And they shall be ashamed of their gardens, which they had coveted.'
1:399
For they did not worship carved images alone, but also served trees in the gardens.
1:400
'For they shall be as a terebinth that has cast off its leaves.'
1:401
Either the idols, or the very inhabitants of the city.
1:402
He brought forward the image of this tree both because the plant is especially native to that region and abundant among them, and because it blossoms and flourishes exceedingly when it is at its prime, yet displays utter unsightliness once it sheds its leaves.
1:403
'And as a garden that has no water.'
1:404
And the second image is clearer than the former and confirms the sense expressed in the first.
1:405
For nothing is more delightful than a flourishing garden, nor more joyless than one laid waste—both of which befell that mother-city.
1:406
因為它素來是更為卓越、更為輝煌的,以無數的華飾妝點著;
For it was ever the more excellent and splendid, adorned with countless ornaments;
1:407
and it became meaner and more shameful than all, having all at once cast away so great a wealth of comeliness.
1:408
'And their strength shall be as a strand of tow.'
1:409
先前的比喻是為表達荒涼淒然,這一個卻是為表達軟弱無力;
The former images were introduced to convey joylessness, but this one to convey weakness;
1:410
and all of them are exceedingly vivid, possessing much clarity and expressive force.
1:411
'As a strand of tow,' that is, weak.
1:412
'And their works as a spark of fire.'
1:413
Here he shows that the evils came from within themselves, and that they themselves gave birth to the captivity and kindled the furnace.
1:414
For just as sparks that fall kindle a fire, so the sins of these people, being gathered together, kindled the wrath of God.
1:415
'And the lawless and the sinners shall be burned up together, and there shall be none to quench them.'
1:416
Again he forbids the hope of salvation, for that same reason once more—not that they should despair, but that, receiving through this at least a fear at its height, they might shake off their great sloth.
1:417
And he also hints here at something else: the irresistibleness of His power, and that, when He punishes and takes vengeance, none shall be able to withstand and to undo the calamities.
