論到那些猜疑我們是出於狂妄而推辭的人,乃是損害了自己的名聲。關於對那尊崇我們之人的所謂羞辱,以及我們逃避這尊榮並非要使他們蒙羞,我們所能說的就是已經說過的這些;
That those who suspected we declined out of arrogance have injured their own reputation. Concerning the insult to those who honored us, then, and that we fled this honor not wishing to put them to shame, we can say what we have said;
3:2
but that it was not from being puffed up with any arrogance either, this too I shall now try, to the best of my ability, to make plain to you.
3:3
For if a choice of a generalship or of a kingdom had been set before us, and then I held this view, someone might reasonably have supposed this; and then no one would have judged us guilty of arrogance, but all of folly.
3:4
But when the priesthood is set before us—which stands as far above kingship as spirit stands above flesh—will anyone dare to charge us with disdain? And how is it not absurd to blame those who despise small things as
3:5
deranged, yet to exempt those who do this in regard to the most exalted things from charges of madness, and instead to subject them to accusations of pride? It would be as if someone, charging a man who despises a herd of oxen and is unwilling to be a herdsman not at all with pride but with derangement of mind, should then say of the man who refuses the kingship over the whole inhabited world and the lordship of all the armies everywhere that, instead of being mad, he is puffed up with pride.
3:6
但事情並非如此,絕非如此;說這等話的人,與其說是毀謗了我們,不如說是毀謗了他們自己;
But these things are not so, they are not; nor do those who say such things slander us rather than themselves;
3:7
因為單單想到人性竟可能藐視那等尊位,這念頭本身就成了對說這話之人的明證,顯出他們對此事所抱持的看法;
for the mere thought that it is possible for human nature to despise that dignity is itself a proof against those who utter it, of the opinion they hold concerning the matter;
3:8
for if they did not reckon it to be among ordinary things of no great account, it would not even have occurred to them to suspect this.
3:9
因為,為何從來沒有人膽敢對天使的尊位起這樣的疑心、說這樣的話:說有哪個人的靈魂會出於狂妄而不肯攀升到那本性的尊榮呢?這是因為我們對那些能力者懷有極大的想像,這就使我們不能相信人會把自己看得比那尊榮更高;如此說來,倒不如更公正地指控那些以此控告我們的人是狂妄;
For why has no one ever dared to suspect or to say anything of the sort concerning the dignity of the angels, that there is a human soul which out of arrogance would not choose to attain to the rank of that nature? For we imagine certain great things about those powers, and this does not permit us to believe that a man could think anything greater than that honor; so that one might more justly charge with arrogance those who accuse us of this;
3:10
for they would never have supposed this concerning others, had they not first themselves condemned the matter as being worth nothing.
3:11
論到我們也並非出於虛榮而逃避。但若他們說我們這樣做是著眼於虛榮,那他們便要被揭穿是自相矛盾、明顯互相牴觸;
That we did not flee out of vainglory either. But if they say that we did this with an eye to glory, they will be convicted of falling into contradiction with themselves and of being plainly at odds;
3:12
for I do not know what other arguments before these they could have sought, had they wished to clear us of the charges of vainglory.
3:13
That if we desired glory, we ought rather to have chosen the office. For if this passion had ever entered me, I ought rather to have accepted it than to have fled.
3:14
為什麼呢?因為這必為我們帶來極大的榮耀;
Why? Because this would have brought us much glory;
3:15
for that one of such an age, and only recently withdrawn from the cares of this life, should suddenly appear so admirable in the eyes of all as to be preferred above those who had spent their whole time in such labors, and to receive more votes than all of them, would have persuaded everyone to suspect great and wonderful things about us, and would have rendered us venerable and conspicuous.
3:16
可是如今,除了少數人之外,教會的大部分人連我們的名字都不認得,所以連我們推辭一事,眾人也不會知曉,只有少數幾個人知道,而我想連這幾人也未必都清楚實情;
But as it is, except for a few, the greater part of the Church does not even know us by name, so that it will not even be apparent to all that we declined, but only to a certain few, of whom I think not even all knew the truth clearly;
3:17
and it is likely that even many of these supposed either that we had not been chosen at all, or that we had been thrust aside after the election, having seemed unfit, and so did not flee voluntarily.
3:18
BASIL: But those who know the truth will admire you.
3:19
JOHN: And yet you said that it was these very people who slandered us as vainglorious and proud.
3:20
Whence then is the praise to be hoped for? From the many? But they do not know the truth.
3:21
還是從那少數人?可是在這裡,事情也對我們轉成了相反的結果;
Or from the few? But here too the matter has turned out for us to the opposite;
3:22
for it was for no other reason that you came in here just now, but to learn what we ought to say in our defense to those people.
3:23
我如今何必對這些事如此斟酌呢?因為,縱使眾人都知道實情,我們也仍不該被判為狂妄或好名;你稍等片刻,這一點也必看得清楚;
And why am I being so precise about these matters now? Because, even if all knew the truth, not even so ought we to be judged guilty of arrogance or love of glory; wait a little, and you will know this too clearly;
3:24
and besides this, that not only those who dare such a daring deed—if indeed there be any such among men, for I myself am not persuaded there is—but also those who suspect it of others, will lie under no small danger.
3:25
論到祭司職分是可畏的,新約的事奉遠比舊約的更為可畏。因為祭司職分雖是在地上施行,所佔的卻是屬天之事的位分;
That the priesthood is awesome, and the new worship far more awesome than the old. For the priesthood is performed on earth, yet it holds the rank of heavenly things;
3:26
for it was not a man, nor an angel, nor an archangel, nor
3:27
any other created power, but the Paraclete Himself who ordained this succession, and persuaded men, while still abiding in flesh, to represent the ministry of the angels.
3:28
Therefore the one consecrated ought to be as pure as if he were standing in the very heavens, in the midst of those powers.
3:29
誠然,連恩典時代以前的事物也是叫人懼怕、極其可畏的——譬如那些鈴鐺、石榴、胸牌上的寶石、以弗得上的寶石、冠冕、頭巾、長袍、金牌、至聖所、內殿中那極深的寂靜;
Fearful indeed and most awesome were even the things before grace—such as the bells, the pomegranates, the stones on the breast, those of the ephod, the mitre, the tiara, the long robe, the golden plate, the Holy of Holies, the deep stillness within;
3:30
but if one examines the things of grace, he will find those fearful and most awesome things to be small, and the saying about the law to be true here too, that 'even that which was made glorious had no glory in this respect, by reason of the glory that surpasses.' For when you see the Lord sacrificed and lying there, and the priest standing over the sacrifice and praying, and all reddened with that precious blood, do you think you are still among men and standing on earth? Are you not rather at once translated to heaven, and, casting out every fleshly thought, do you not with naked soul and pure mind look around upon the things in heaven? O the wonder!
3:31
O the loving-kindness of God!
3:32
He who sits on high with the Father is at that hour held in the hands of all, and gives Himself to those who wish to embrace and to receive Him; and all do this then through their eyes.
3:33
Do these things seem to you worthy of contempt, or to be of such a kind that anyone could be exalted against them? Will you also behold the surpassing greatness of this sanctity through another wonder? Picture to me Elijah before your eyes, and the countless multitude standing around, and the sacrifice lying upon the stones, and all the rest in stillness and deep silence, and the prophet alone praying; then suddenly the flame cast down from heaven upon the offering—these things are wonderful and full of every astonishment.
3:34
那麼,請從那裡轉到如今所施行的事上,你必看見不僅是奇妙、而是超越一切驚駭的事;
Pass over, then, from there to the things now performed, and you will see things not only wonderful, but surpassing all astonishment;
3:35
for the priest stands, bringing down not fire, but the Holy Spirit, and makes his supplication at length, not that some torch sent from above may consume the offerings, but that grace, falling upon the sacrifice, may through it kindle the souls of all and show them brighter than refined silver.
3:36
Who, then, unless mad or beside himself, will be able to despise this most awesome rite? Or are you unaware that no human soul could ever have endured that fire of the sacrifice, but all would have been utterly destroyed, had not the help of God's grace been great? V
3:37
That great is the authority and honor of priests. For if one considers how great a thing it is for a man, while still bound up with flesh and blood, to be able to draw near to that blessed and incorruptible nature, then he will see clearly with how much honor the grace of the Spirit has dignified the priests.
3:38
for through them both these things are performed and others nowise inferior to these, both in respect of dignity and of our salvation.
3:39
因為那些居住在地上、以此地為家的人,竟被託付去管理天上的事,並得了一種權柄,是神既未賜給天使、也未賜給天使長的;
For those who dwell on earth and have their abode upon it have been entrusted to administer the things in heaven, and have received an authority which God gave neither to angels nor to archangels;
3:40
for it was not said to them:
3:41
『凡你們在地上所捆綁的,在天上也要捆綁;凡你們在地上所釋放的,在天上也要釋放。』地上掌權的人固然也有捆綁的權柄,但只能捆綁身體;
'Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound also in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.' For those who rule on earth do indeed have the authority to bind, but only of bodies;
3:42
but this bond touches the very soul and passes through the heavens; and whatever the priests do below, that God ratifies above, and the Master confirms the decision of His servants.
3:43
And what is this but that He has given them all the heavenly authority? For 'Whosesoever sins you forgive,' He says, 'they are forgiven, and whosesoever you retain, they are retained.' What authority could be greater than this? 'The Father has given all judgment
3:44
都交給了子。』可是我看見,這一切都由子交在了這些人手中;
to the Son.' But I see all of it committed to these men by the Son;
3:45
for it is as though they had already been translated to the heavens, and had transcended human nature, and been freed from our passions, that they have been raised to so great a rule.
3:46
再者,倘若君王把這樣的尊榮賜給他的一個臣民,使他能隨意把人下在監裡、又能釋放,這人就要被眾人羨慕、矚目;
Again, if a king should impart this honor to one of his subjects, that he might cast into prison whom he will and release again, this man is envied and conspicuous in the eyes of all;
3:47
but he who has received from God an authority as much greater as heaven is more precious than earth and souls than bodies—has he seemed to some to have received so small an honor that they could even imagine that one of those entrusted with such things would despise the gift?
3:48
for it is conspicuous madness to despise so great an office, without which we can attain neither salvation nor the promised good things.
3:49
論到他們是神最大恩賜的執事。因為,若人非從水和靈重生,就不能進神的國,而不吃主之肉、不喝主之血的人就被擯棄於永生之外,而這一切都是惟獨藉著那聖潔的手——我是說祭司的手——才得以成就,那麼,人若沒有這些,怎能逃避地獄的火,或得著所存留的冠冕呢?因為正是這些人,正是他們,受託承擔了屬靈的產難,被委以藉洗禮而生的工作;
That they are ministers of God's greatest gifts. For if one cannot enter the kingdom of heaven unless he be born again of water and the Spirit, and he who does not eat the flesh of the Lord and drink His blood is cast out of eternal life, and all these things are accomplished through none other but only through those holy hands, the hands of the priest, I mean—how could anyone without these either escape the fire of Gehenna or attain the crowns laid up? For these are they, these, who have been entrusted with the spiritual travail and committed with the birth that is through baptism;
3:50
藉著他們,我們穿上了基督,與神的兒子一同埋葬,成了那有福之元首的肢體;如此,他們對我們而言,理當不僅比官長與君王更可敬畏,甚至比父親更為尊貴;
through them we put on Christ and are buried together with the Son of God, and become members of that blessed Head; so that they might justly be to us not only more to be feared than rulers and kings, but even more honorable than fathers;
3:51
for the latter begot us of blood and of the will of the flesh, but the former are to us the cause of our birth from God, of that blessed regeneration, of the true freedom, and of the adoption according to grace.
3:52
猶太人的祭司有權潔淨身體的痲瘋——或更確切地說,根本不是潔淨,乃只是查驗那已得潔淨的人;你也知道那時祭司之職是如何被人爭奪;
The priests of the Jews had authority to cleanse bodily leprosy—or rather, not to cleanse it at all, but only to examine those who had been cleansed; and you know how greatly the priesthood was then contended for;
3:53
可是這些人所領受的權柄,不是去查驗已治好的身體痲瘋,乃是去對付靈魂的污穢——不是查驗那已除去的,乃是把它徹底除去;如此,凡藐視這些人的,就比那些與大坍同夥的人更為可咒,也該受更大的刑罰;
but these have received authority not to examine bodily leprosy cured, but spiritual uncleanness of soul—not to examine it once removed, but to remove it altogether; so that those who despise these men are far more accursed than those about Dathan, and deserving of greater punishment;
3:54
因為前者雖是強求那本不屬於他們的職分,卻仍對它懷有極高的看法,並藉著竭力熱切地追求它顯明了這一點;
for the latter, even though they laid claim to an office not belonging to them, yet nevertheless held a wonderful opinion concerning it, and showed this by striving after it with much zeal;
3:55
but these, when the matter had been ordered for the better and had received so great an enhancement, then dared things contrary to those men, and much greater than theirs.
3:56
For it is not an equal thing, as regards the measure of contempt, to crave an honor that does not belong to one and to despise so great goods; rather, the latter is greater than the former by as much as is the difference between scorning and admiring.
3:57
Who, then, is so wretched a soul as to despise so great goods? I, for one, would never say there is such a one—unless someone were to suffer a demonic frenzy.
3:58
不過,現在我要回到我先前岔開的話題;
But indeed I return again to the point from which I digressed;
3:59
因為神不僅在懲罰的事上,也在施恩的事上,賜給祭司比肉身父母更大的能力,而這兩者之間的差別,正如今生與來生之間的差別那麼大;
for not only in punishing, but also in doing good, God gave the priests greater power than natural parents, and the difference between the two is as great as that between the present and the future life;
3:60
for the latter beget for this life, the former for that.
3:61
後者連身體的死亡都無法為兒女抵擋,也不能驅退已臨到他們身上的疾病;
And the latter could not even ward off bodily death from their children, nor repel a disease that had befallen them;
3:62
but the former have often saved the soul that was sick and about to perish, by making the chastisement milder for some, and by not even letting others fall into it from the outset—not only by teaching and admonishing, but also by helping through prayers.
3:63
For not only when they regenerate us, but also afterward, they have authority to forgive sins.
3:64
'Is anyone sick among you?' he says. 'Let him call for the elders of the Church,
3:65
他們可以奉主的名用油抹他,為他禱告;
and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord;
3:66
and the prayer of faith shall save the one who is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.' Again, natural parents, if their children offend any of those in high places and of great power, can in no way help them; but the priests have often reconciled to men not rulers nor kings, but God Himself, when He was angry with them.
3:67
Will anyone, then, after these things, still dare to judge us of arrogance? For my part, I think that from what has been said, so great a reverence will lay hold of the souls of the hearers that they will judge of arrogance and rashness no longer those who flee, but those who of their own accord come forward and strive to acquire this honor for themselves.
3:68
For if those entrusted with the rule of cities, when they happen not to be intelligent and very keen, have both overthrown the cities and destroyed themselves besides, how much power do you think he needs who has been allotted to adorn the bride of Christ—both power from Him and that which is from above—that he may not go astray? VII
3:69
論到保羅也是滿懷懼怕,因他看見這職分的偉大。沒有人比保羅更愛基督,沒有人比他顯出更大的熱心,沒有人蒙過比他更多的恩典;
That Paul too was full of fear, seeing the greatness of the office. No one loved Christ more than Paul, no one showed greater zeal than he, no one was counted worthy of more grace;
3:70
yet nevertheless, after so many advantages, he still fears and trembles concerning this office and those ruled by him.
3:71
'For I fear,' he says, 'lest by any means, as the serpent deceived Eve, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is toward Christ.' And again:
3:72
'I was with you in fear and in much trembling.' A man caught up to the third heaven and made a partaker with God of things unutterable, and who endured as many deaths as the days he lived after believing—a man who would not even use the authority given him by Christ, lest any of the believers should be made to stumble.
3:73
那麼,倘若那位超過神之命令、絕不尋求自己的事、單尋求受治理之人之益處的人,尚且總是懼怕,常常仰望這職分的偉大,那我們這些在許多事上尋求自己、不但不超越基督之命令、反倒在更大程度上違犯它的人,又該如何呢?他說:『有誰軟弱,我不軟弱呢?有誰跌倒,我不焦急呢?』祭司理當是這樣的人——或更應說,不僅是這樣;
If, then, he who went beyond God's commands and nowhere sought his own things but those of the ruled, was thus always afraid, ever looking to the greatness of the office, what shall we suffer—we who in many things seek our own, who not only do not surpass the commands of Christ but transgress them in greater measure? 'Who is weak,' he says, 'and I am not weak? who is made to stumble, and I do not burn?' Such ought the priest to be—or rather, not only such;
3:74
for these things are small and as nothing compared with what I am about to say.
3:75
And what is this? 'I could wish,' he says, 'that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh.' If anyone can utter this saying, if anyone has a soul that reaches to this prayer, he would justly be accused for fleeing.
3:76
But if anyone falls as far short of that virtue as we do, then he deserves to be hated not when he flees, but when he accepts the office.
3:77
That one who comes into public life is led on to commit many sins, unless he is exceedingly noble. For if a choice of a military rank were set before us, and then those with authority to confer the honor dragged a coppersmith or a cobbler or some such craftsman into the midst and put the army into his hands, I would have praised that poor wretch for not fleeing and for doing everything so as not to cast himself into manifest evil.
3:78
因為,若單單被稱為牧人、隨隨便便應付這事就夠了,並無危險,那就任憑誰願意都可指我們虛榮;
For if it suffices simply to be called a shepherd and to handle the matter however it chances, and there is no danger, let whoever wishes accuse us of vainglory;
3:79
but if he who takes up this care must have much understanding, and before understanding much grace from God, and uprightness of character, and purity of life, and virtue greater than human, then do not deprive me of pardon, who am unwilling to perish in vain and to no purpose.
3:80
For if someone, taking command of a vast merchant ship full of rowers and laden with costly cargo, and then sitting at the helm, were to bid me cross the Aegean or the Tyrrhenian
3:81
海,我一聽見這話便會立刻跳開逃離;
sea, I would have leaped away at the first word;
3:82
and if anyone asked, 'Why?'—'That I might not sink the ship,' I would have said.
3:83
既然如此,在那虧損不過是錢財、身體的危險至多是死亡的事上,沒有人會責備那運用周詳謹慎的人;
Then, where the loss is in money and the bodily danger reaches even to death, no one will blame those who use great forethought;
3:84
but where for those who suffer shipwreck it is reserved to fall, not into this sea, but into the abyss of fire, and a death awaits them which does not separate the soul from the body, but consigns it together with the body to eternal punishment—here, because we did not rashly cast ourselves into so great an evil, will you be angry and hate us? Do not, I beseech and entreat you.
3:85
我認識自己的靈魂,這軟弱微小的靈魂;
I know my own soul, this weak and small soul;
3:86
I know the greatness of that ministry and the great difficulty of the matter.
3:87
That the priest is caught by vainglory and its terrors. For more waves than the winds that trouble the sea storm the soul of the consecrated man.
3:88
And first of all is that most dreadful reef of vainglory, more terrible than the one the mythmakers tell their marvels about.
3:89
因為確有許多人有力量航行越過它、毫髮無傷地逃脫;
For many indeed have had the strength to sail past it and escape unharmed;
3:90
but for me this is so difficult that, even now, when no necessity at all thrusts me toward that pit, I cannot keep myself clean of the peril.
3:91
But if one were to entrust this oversight to me, it would be all but binding my hands behind me and handing me over to the beasts that dwell on that reef, to tear me to pieces every day.
3:92
And what are these beasts? Wrath, despondency, envy, strife, slanders, accusations, lying, hypocrisy, plots, angers against those who have done no wrong, pleasures at the disgraces of fellow ministers, grief at their prosperity, love of praise, longing for honor—this last being the very thing that most of all hurls the human soul headlong—teachings aimed at pleasing, servile flatteries, ignoble fawnings, contempt of the poor, courtings of the rich, senseless honors and harmful favors that bring danger both to those who give and those who receive them, slavish fear befitting only the basest of slaves, abolition of frankness, much show of humility but the truth of it nowhere, while rebukes and reproofs are done away with—or rather, against the lowly they go beyond measure, but against those clothed with power no one dares even to part his lips.
3:93
For all these and more than these does that reef breed as its beasts; and those once caught by them are of necessity dragged down into such slavery that often, even to please women, they do many things which it is not even seemly to mention.
3:94
因為神的律法已把她們從這職事中排除出去,她們卻硬要擠進來;
For the divine law has thrust them out from this ministry, but they force their way in;
3:95
她們既靠自己一無所能,便藉著別人成就一切,並披戴了如此的權勢,以致祭司中她們願意接納的就接納、願意逐出的就逐出;
and since they can do nothing by themselves, they do everything through others, and have clothed themselves with such power that they both admit and expel whatever priests they please;
3:96
and one may see things turned upside down—as the proverb says—the rulers led by the ruled, and would that they were men, but they are women, to whom it is not even permitted to teach.
3:97
Why do I say teach? The blessed Paul did not even allow them so much as to speak in church.
3:98
But I have heard someone say that they have even imparted to themselves such freedom of speech as to rebuke the presiders of the Churches and to upbraid them more bitterly than masters do their own servants.
3:99
也不要有人以為我把所有人都置於上述的指控之下;
And let no one think that I subject all to the aforesaid charges;
3:100
for there are, there are many who have been carried beyond these nets, and they are more than those who have been caught.
3:101
論到這些禍患的根源不在祭司職分,乃在我們自己的懈怠。然而,我也斷不把這些禍患歸咎於祭司職分——但願我永不至於這樣瘋狂——因為凡有見識的人,都不把兇殺歸咎於刀劍,不把醉酒歸咎於酒,不把橫暴歸咎於力氣,不把無謂的魯莽歸咎於勇敢,乃是歸咎於那些誤用神所賜恩賜的人;
That the priesthood is not the cause of these evils, but our own slothfulness. But neither would I charge the priesthood with these evils—may I never go so mad—for neither do all who have understanding charge the iron with murders, nor wine with drunkenness, nor strength with insolence, nor courage with senseless rashness, but rather those who use amiss the gifts given by God;
3:102
all who have understanding declare them to be guilty, and punish them.
3:103
至於祭司職分,它倒大可公正地控告我們這些不善於運用它的人;
Since the priesthood, at any rate, might justly accuse us who do not handle it rightly;
3:104
for it is not itself the cause of the evils we have spoken of, but we have defiled it with so many pollutions—as far as it lies in us—by entrusting it to ordinary men.
3:105
And these men, having neither first examined their own souls nor considered the weight of the matter, eagerly accept what is offered; but when they come to act, blinded by inexperience, they fill with countless evils the people who have been entrusted to them.
3:106
This very thing, this, is what was very nearly going to happen in our own case too, had not God quickly drawn us out of those dangers, sparing both His own Church and our soul.
3:107
For whence, tell me, do you think arise so great tumults in the Churches? For I, for my part, think from no other source than from the choices and elections of those who preside being made carelessly and at random.
3:108
For the head ought to be strongest, that it might be able to govern the evil vapors sent up from the rest of the body below and to set them in due order; but when it happens to be of itself weak, unable to repel those disease-producing assaults, it both becomes weaker than it really is and besides destroys along with itself the rest of the body.
3:109
And that this might not happen now too, God kept us in the rank of the feet, which we obtained from the beginning.
3:110
For there are many things, O Basil, besides those already mentioned—many other things which the consecrated man must have, and which we do not have; and before all the others, this.
3:111
His soul must be wholly pure from desire of the matter; for if he chances to be passionately disposed toward this office, once he attains it he kindles a stronger flame, and being completely captured, in order to hold it securely he endures countless terrible things—even if he must flatter, even if he must submit to something ignoble and unworthy, even if he must spend much money.
3:112
For that some have even filled the churches with murders and laid cities waste while contending for this office, I pass over now, lest I should seem to some to be saying incredible things.
3:113
可是我想,人對這事理當存如此的敬畏,以致一面從起初就逃避這職分的重擔,一面在進入之後,倘若有足以致黜免的罪發生,也不等待他人的判決,乃要搶先一步,把自己逐出這職分;
But one ought, I think, to have such reverence for the matter as both to flee the burden of the office at the outset, and, after having entered into it, not to wait for the judgments of others—if ever a sin sufficient to cause deposition should occur—but, anticipating them, to cast oneself out of the office;
3:114
for thus it was likely that one would also draw down mercy from God.
3:115
But to cling to it contrary to what befits the dignity is to deprive oneself of all pardon, and the more to kindle God's wrath, adding a second and more grievous offense.
3:116
可是沒有人肯這樣行;
But no one will ever endure to do this;
3:117
for it is a dreadful thing in truth, dreadful, to be greedy for this honor.
3:118
And I say this not in conflict with the blessed Paul, but indeed in full accord with his words.
3:119
For what does he say? 'If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a good work.' But I said that it is a dreadful thing to desire, not the work, but the authority and the power.
3:120
And this longing, I think, one must thrust out of the soul with all earnestness, and not allow it to take hold of one at the very outset, so that one may be free to do everything with liberty.
3:121
For he who does not desire to be displayed in this authority does not even fear deposition from it; and not fearing it, he would be able to do everything with the freedom befitting Christians.
3:122
For those who are afraid and tremble at being cast down from there endure a bitter slavery full of many evils, and are often compelled to offend both men and God.
3:123
But the soul ought not to be so disposed; rather, just as in wars we see the noble soldiers both fighting eagerly and falling bravely, so also those who come to this stewardship ought both to exercise the priesthood and to be released from the office in the manner befitting Christian men,
3:124
knowing that such a deposition brings no smaller a crown than the office itself.
3:125
For whenever anyone suffers something of this kind for the sake of enduring nothing unseemly or unworthy of that dignity, he both procures punishment for those who unjustly deposed him, and a greater reward for himself.
3:126
因為祂說:『人若因我辱罵你們,逼迫你們,捏造各樣壞話毀謗你們,你們就有福了;
'For blessed are you,' He says, 'when they reproach and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely for my sake;
3:127
rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven.' And these things hold true when one is cast out by those of his own rank, whether through envy, or to gratify others, or out of enmity, or for some other improper motive; but when one happens to suffer this even at the hands of his adversaries, I think there is no need of argument to show how great a gain they gather for him by their own wickedness.
3:128
This, then, one must scan on every side and search out exactly, lest some spark of that desire smolder unnoticed.
3:129
因為,即使是那些從起初就在這情慾上潔淨的人,一旦陷入這職分,若能逃脫它,也算是可喜的;
For it is a welcome thing if even those pure of the passion from the beginning are able, when they fall into the office, to escape it;
3:130
but if anyone, even before attaining the honor, nurtures this dreadful and savage beast within himself, there is no telling into what furnace he will cast himself after attaining it.
3:131
But we—and do not for a moment suppose that we, in our self-deprecation, would ever wish to lie to you—we possess this desire in great measure, and along with all the rest, this too no less frightened us and turned us to this flight.
3:132
因為,正如那些迷戀肉身美色的人,只要還能親近所愛的,便受那情慾更劇烈的折磨,可是當他們把自己盡量遠離所戀慕的對象時,便也驅走了那狂亂;
For just as those who love bodies, so long as it is possible to be near the beloved, have a more grievous torment of the passion, but when they remove themselves as far as possible from the objects of their longing, they also drive away the madness;
3:133
so too with those who desire this office: when they are near it, the evil becomes unbearable, but when they give up hope, they quench the desire along with the expectation.
3:134
那麼,這是一個藉口,並且不是小的;
This, then, is one pretext, and no small one;
3:135
but even were it standing alone by itself, it would be enough to keep us away from this dignity.
3:136
But as it is, yet another has been added, no less than this.
3:137
And what is this? The priest must be sober and clear-sighted, and possess countless eyes on every side, as one who lives not for himself alone but for so great a multitude.
3:138
But that we are sluggish and slack, and scarcely sufficient even for our own salvation, you yourself would acknowledge—you who, most of all, out of love, are eager to hide our faults.
3:139
你不要對我提禁食,也不要提守夜、睡硬地、和其餘苦待身體的事;
For do not speak to me of fasting, nor of keeping vigil, nor of sleeping on the ground, and the rest of the body's austerity;
3:140
for you know how far we fall short even of these.
3:141
But even if these things had been achieved by us with exactness, not even so, with our present sluggishness, could they have availed us anything for that oversight.
3:142
因為對一個關閉在某間小屋、只顧自己之事的人而言,這些事必帶來許多益處;
For to a man shut up in some little cell and caring only for his own affairs, these things would afford much benefit;
3:143
but for one parceled out among so great a multitude, possessing private cares for each of the ruled, what trustworthy gain could it contribute toward their advancement, unless he happen to have a vigorous and most robust soul? And do not be amazed if, alongside so much endurance, I seek another test—that of the courage in the soul.
3:144
因為輕看食物、飲料和柔軟的床鋪,我們看見對許多人而言根本不是什麼難事,尤其對那些性情較為粗樸、自幼即如此長大的人,以及對許多別的人,因為他們的體質和習慣都使那些勞苦中的艱辛變得容易;
For to despise foods and drinks and a soft bed we see to be no labor at all for many, especially for those of a more rustic disposition and reared so from earliest age, and for many others too, since both their bodily constitution and their habit ease the harshness in those toils;
3:145
可是要忍受羞辱、欺凌、難堪的言語,以及在下之人的譏誚——無論是出於無端還是有由的——並要忍受官長和受治者所發的、無理而枉然的責難,這卻不是許多人所能、乃是或許一兩個人才能的;
but to bear insult and abuse and burdensome words, and the mockeries of inferiors—both those uttered idly and those with cause—and the reproaches made rashly and in vain by both rulers and ruled, is the part not of many, but of one or two perhaps;
3:146
and one might see those who are strong in those former things so dizzied at these as to grow more savage than the fiercest beasts.
3:147
我們尤其要把這樣的人攔在祭司職分的範圍之外;
we shall most of all bar such men from the precincts of the priesthood;
3:148
因為主領者既不勒住自己不吃、也不赤腳而行,這絲毫無損於教會這共同的身體;可是兇猛的怒氣卻在懷怒之人和他周圍的人身上釀成大禍;
for that the presider neither chokes himself off from food nor goes unshod would in no way harm the common body of the Church, but fierce wrath works great calamities both upon the one who has it and upon those near him;
3:149
and against those who do not do those things no threat is laid up from God, but against those who simply give way to anger, Gehenna and the fire of Gehenna have been threatened.
3:150
Therefore, just as one who loves empty glory, when he lays hold of the rule over the many, supplies greater fuel to the fire, so too the one who, even by himself and in dealings with a few, cannot master his anger, but is easily carried away, when he is entrusted with the leadership of a whole multitude, like some beast goaded on every side and by countless points, can never himself live in peace and inflicts countless evils upon those entrusted to him.
3:151
For nothing so muddies the purity of the mind and the clearness of the understanding as disordered anger, borne along with great violence.
3:152
'For this,' it says, 'destroys even the prudent.' For just as in some night battle, the eye of the soul, darkened, cannot distinguish friends from foes, nor the dishonorable from the honorable, but treats all in turn after one fashion, and, even if it must incur some harm, easily endures everything in order to fulfill the soul's pleasure.
3:153
For the kindling of anger is a kind of pleasure, and it tyrannizes the soul more grievously than pleasure, throwing its whole sound condition into utter confusion, up and down.
3:154
For it readily lifts one to arrogance, and prepares one for untimely enmities and irrational hatred, and to give offense lightly and rashly and continually, and forces one to say and do many other such things, while the soul is dragged along by the great rush of the passion and has nowhere to plant its own strength so as to stand firm against so great an onset.
3:155
可是我再不容你繼續這樣假意自謙了;
But I will no longer endure you playing the ironist further;
3:156
因為他說:誰不知道你離這病症有多遠呢?若望說:『那麼,有福的人哪,』我說,『你竟想把我帶近火堆,挑動那安歇的野獸麼?難道你不知道,我們之所以做到這地步,並非靠自己的美德,乃是出於愛好安靜?而一個如此存心的人,只要獨自度日、僅與一兩位朋友來往,便覺得這是可喜的事,能逃脫那邊的火災——更何況一旦墜入這麼多掛慮的深淵呢?因為那時他便不只把自己、也把許多別人一同拖向滅亡的懸崖,並使他們對溫和之德的操練更加怠惰;
for who does not know, he says, how far you are from this disease? JOHN: 'What then,' I said, 'O blessed one, do you wish to lead me near the pyre and to provoke the beast that is at rest? Or are you unaware that we achieved this not by our own virtue, but by loving stillness? And that one so disposed, finding it a welcome thing while remaining by himself and dealing with only one or two friends, is able to escape the conflagration from there—much less when he has fallen into the abyss of so many cares? For then he drags down with himself not only himself, but also many others, to the precipice of destruction, and renders them more sluggish about the practice of gentleness;
3:157
for the multitude of the ruled is by nature wont, for the most part, to look upon the manners of the rulers as upon some archetypal image, and to conform themselves to those.
3:158
How, then, could anyone allay their inflammations while himself swollen with them? And who would quickly desire to become moderate among the many, while seeing the ruler given to anger? For the faults of priests cannot be hidden, but even the smallest quickly become manifest.
3:159
因為一個角力者,只要還待在家中、不與任何人交手,便可不被察覺,縱使他極其孱弱;可是一旦他赤身上場比賽,便輕易被識破;
For an athlete too, so long as he stays at home and grapples with no one, can pass unnoticed, even if he happens to be very weak, but once he strips for the contests, he is easily exposed;
3:160
and among men, those who live this private and untroubled life have solitude as a screen for their own sins, but when brought into public view, they are compelled to strip off their quietude like a garment and to display their bare souls to all through their outward movements.
3:161
所以,正如他們的善行使許多人得益、激發他們生出同等的熱心,照樣,他們的過失也使人對美德的實行更加馬虎,使人對為著美善之事所付的勞苦變得懶散;
Therefore, just as their good deeds have profited many, calling them to an equal zeal, so too their faults have rendered men more careless about the working of virtue, and prepared them to be slack toward the labors on behalf of what is excellent;
3:162
wherefore the beauty of his soul must shine forth on every side, that it may be able both to gladden and to enlighten the souls of those who behold.
3:163
For the sins of ordinary men, as though done in some darkness, destroy
3:164
只毀滅那犯罪的人自己;
those who commit them alone;
3:165
but the fault of a man conspicuous and known to many brings common harm to all, both rendering those who have collapsed more supine toward the sweat for good things, and provoking to arrogance those who wish to give heed to themselves.
3:166
除這些之外,卑微之人的失腳,縱使暴露於眾,也不至於給任何人一記值得一提的打擊;
And apart from these things, the slips of the lowly, even if they come into the open, strike no one a noteworthy blow;
3:167
可是那些高坐在這尊榮頂端的人,首先是眾目矚望,其次,即使在最微小的事上絆跌,那微小的在別人看來也成了重大的;
but those who sit at the summit of this honor are, first, conspicuous to all; and then, even if they stumble in the smallest things, the small appears great to others;
3:168
for all measure the sin not by the magnitude of what was done, but by the dignity of the one who erred.
3:169
祭司必須以那緊張的熱忱和對自己生活毫不鬆懈的警醒,像穿戴某種金剛不壞的兵器一般武裝自己,四面審察,免得有人發現一處赤露、被忽略之地,便給予致命的一擊;
And the priest must be fenced about, as with certain adamantine weapons, by intense earnestness and unremitting vigilance over his life, scanning on every side lest someone, finding a bare and neglected spot, strike a deadly blow;
3:170
for all stand around ready to wound and to cast down—not only enemies and foes, but also many of those who feign friendship.
3:171
所以,所當揀選的靈魂,必須如同神的恩典從前在巴比倫的火窯中所顯明那些聖者的身體一般;
Such souls, then, must be chosen as the grace of God showed forth the bodies of those holy ones to be, once in the Babylonian furnace;
3:172
for not vine-twigs and pitch and tow are the fuel of this fire, but something far more grievous than these, since neither is that perceptible fire here in question, but the all-devouring flame of envy encircles him, rising on every side and going over and searching out his life more exactly than the fire then searched the bodies of those children.
3:173
Whenever, then, it finds even a small trace of stubble, it quickly fastens upon it, and consumes that rotten part, while all the rest of the building—even though it happen to be brighter than the sun's rays—it scorches and darkens entirely with that smoke.
3:174
因為,只要祭司的生活在各方面都安排得宜,便能堅不可破,不受陰謀所傷;
For so long as the priest's life is well-fitted on every side, it remains impregnable to plots;
3:175
but if he happen to overlook some small thing, as is likely for one who is a man and crossing the much-wandering sea of this life, none of his other good deeds avails him to escape the mouths of accusers, but that small slip overshadows all the rest, and all wish to judge the priest not as one clothed with flesh nor as one allotted a human nature, but as an angel freed from the rest of weakness.
3:176
And just as with a tyrant: so long as he holds power, all shudder at him and flatter him, because they cannot bring him down, but when they see that power waning, those who were friends a little before, casting off their hypocritical honor, suddenly become enemies and foes, and, having learned all his rotten points, set upon him to depose him from the rule—so too with priests: those who a little before, while he held power, honored and courted him, when they find some small handle, prepare themselves vehemently, intending to cast him down not merely as a tyrant, but in a manner harsher even than that.
3:177
正如僭主懼怕他的衛士,這人也最懼怕那些靠近他、與他同工的人;
And just as the tyrant fears his bodyguards, so this man too trembles most of all at those near him and ministering alongside him;
3:178
因為再沒有別人像這些人這樣覬覦他的職分,也沒有別人像他們這樣熟知他的事;
for none others so desire his office, nor know his affairs so well as these;
3:179
for being close at hand, if anything of the sort should happen, they perceive it before the others, and could easily both be believed when they slander, and, by making small things great, catch the one they falsely accuse.
3:180
For that apostolic saying has been reversed:
3:181
『一個肢體受苦,所有的肢體就一同快樂;
'And whether one member suffers, all the members rejoice;
3:182
or whether one member is glorified, all the members suffer'—except where someone, with much piety, is able to stand firm against all.
3:183
那麼,你竟把我們差遣進這麼大的戰爭裡去麼?你竟以為我們的靈魂足以應付這樣紛繁多樣的爭戰麼?你是在何處、從誰學得這事的呢?因為,假如是神所啟示的,就把那神諭指給我看,我就信服;
Into so great a war, then, do you send us out? And did you think our soul would suffice for a battle so varied and manifold? Where and from whom did you learn this? For if God has revealed it, show me the oracle, and I am persuaded;
3:184
可是你若沒有,乃是憑人的看法下這判斷,那就請你終於不再受蒙蔽了;
but if you have none, and bring your verdict from human opinion, then cease at last from being deceived;
3:185
it is just that we should be persuaded concerning our own affairs by ourselves rather than by others, since no one knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him.
3:186
For that we should have made both ourselves and those who chose us a laughingstock, had we accepted this office, and with much loss should have returned to this state of life in which we now are, even if not before, yet now at least I think I have persuaded you by these words.
3:187
For not envy alone, but the desire for this office, far more vehement than envy, is wont to arm the many against the one who holds it.
3:188
And just as money-loving children are burdened by their fathers' old age, so too some of these men, when they see the priesthood prolonged over a long time, since it is unholy to do away with him, are eager to depose him from the office, all desiring to take his place and each expecting the rule to fall to himself.
3:189
That the desire of love of rule must be cast out of the soul of the priest. Do you wish me to show you yet another kind of this conflict, full of countless dangers? Come, then, and peep into the public festivals, at which it is the custom most of all to make the elections of ecclesiastical offices, and you will see the priest pelted with as many accusations as there are people in the multitude of the ruled.
3:190
因為所有有權授予這尊榮的人,那時都分裂成許多派別,人可以看見長老的議會彼此既不同心,與那蒙選得了監督之職的人也不同心,乃是各持己見,這個揀選這人,那個揀選那人;
For all who have authority to confer the honor are then split into many factions, and one would see the council of the elders in agreement neither with one another nor with the very one who has been allotted the bishopric, but each standing by himself, one choosing this man, another that;
3:191
其緣由乃在於他們並非都仰望那惟一該仰望的——就是靈魂的美德——卻另有種種藉口為人謀取這尊榮;
and the cause is that they do not all look to the one thing to which alone they ought to look—the virtue of the soul—but there are also other pretexts that procure this honor;
3:192
for instance, 'Let this man be approved,' says one, 'because he is of illustrious birth'; another, 'because he is clothed with great wealth and would not need to be supported from the revenues of the Church'; another, 'because he has come over from the enemy.'
3:193
這個人急於把那向自己友善的人高舉在眾人之上,那個人推那與自己有親戚關係的,又一個推那比別人更會諂媚他的;
And one is eager to prefer above the others the man who is well-disposed toward himself, another the one related to him by family, another the one who flatters him more;
3:194
but no one is willing to look to the fit man, nor to make any test of his soul.
3:195
And I am so far from holding these grounds to be trustworthy for the scrutiny of priests, that not even if someone should display great piety—that piety which contributes no small thing toward the office for us—would I dare straightway to approve him on this ground, unless along with the piety he chanced to have also much understanding.
3:196
因為我認識許多人,他們終其一生把自己關閉起來、以禁食銷磨身體,只要還容他們獨自度日、只顧自己的事,便在神面前蒙嘉許,天天為那屬靈的操練添上不小的份量;
For I know many who, having shut themselves up the whole time and worn themselves away with fasting, so long as it was permitted them to be by themselves and to care for their own affairs, were well approved before God and added day by day no small portion to that philosophy;
3:197
but when they came into the multitude and were compelled to set right the ignorance of the many, some were not even sufficient for so great a task from the very start, while others, forced to persevere, casting off their former exactness, both did themselves the greatest harm and profited others nothing.
3:198
But neither, if someone has spent his whole time abiding in the lowest rank of the ministry and has driven on to extreme old age, shall we, merely out of respect for his age, advance him to the higher office.
3:199
For what if, even after that age, he remains unfit? And I have said these things now not out of any wish to dishonor gray hair, nor to lay down a law that those who come from the ranks of the monks must by all means be barred from such oversight—for it has happened that many also, coming from that flock, have shone brilliantly in this office—but striving to show this: that if neither piety by itself, nor long old age, would be sufficient to show its possessor worthy of the priesthood, then much less would the aforesaid pretexts accomplish this.
3:200
可是有些人還加上別的、更為荒謬的理由;
But some add other grounds yet more absurd;
3:201
they enroll themselves in the order of the clergy by aligning themselves with the adverse party, while others do so out of wickedness, and lest, being passed over, they should work great evils.
3:202
Could anything be more lawless than this—when wicked men, full of countless evils, are courted for the very things for which they ought to be punished, and on account of which they ought not even to cross the threshold of the church, are for these very things promoted to the priestly dignity? Shall we then still inquire, tell me, into the cause of God's wrath, when we hand over things so holy and most awesome to be ruined by men, some wicked, others worth nothing? For when some are entrusted with the oversight of things that nowise belong to them, and others with that of things far greater than their own power, they make the Church to differ in nothing from the Euripus.
3:203
我從前常譏笑世俗的官長,因為他們分配職位不是按人靈魂裡的美德,乃是按財富、年資和人的庇蔭;
And I formerly used to laugh at secular rulers, because they make their distributions of honors not according to the virtue in men's souls, but according to wealth and number of years and human patronage;
3:204
but when I heard that this same irrationality had also burst its way into our own affairs, I no longer regarded the matter as equally dreadful.
3:205
因為,世俗之人既貪慕眾人的稱讚、又為錢財行一切事,他們犯這樣的罪有什麼希奇呢?何況那些自稱已從這一切中得釋放的人,存心竟絲毫不比他們好,反倒雖是為著屬天的事爭競,卻把它當作幾畝田地或別的這類事來商議,隨隨便便地拿庸碌平凡的人,去管理如此重大的事——這些事正是神的獨生子不惜倒空自己的榮耀、成為人、取了奴僕的形像、被人吐唾沫、被人擊打、藉肉身死了那羞辱之死所成就的;他們甚至不僅止於這些事,更加上別樣更為荒謬的事;
For what wonder is it that worldly men, lovers of glory from the many and doing all things for the sake of money, should sin in such ways, when those who profess to have been freed from all these things are in no way better disposed than they, but, though they have their contest over heavenly things, deliberate over them as over acres of land or some other such matter, and, simply taking ordinary, common men, set them over affairs so great—affairs for the sake of which the only-begotten Son of God did not refuse to empty His own glory, to become man, to take the form of a servant, to be spat upon, to be struck, and to die through the flesh the death of reproach? And they do not stop even at these things only, but add others yet more absurd;
3:206
for not only do they approve the unworthy, but they also cast out the suitable.
3:207
彷彿必須從兩面去毀壞教會的穩固,又彷彿前一個藉口還不足以激動神的忿怒,他們就把第二個接上去,這第二個也是同樣嚴重的;
For as though it were necessary to ruin the security of the Church from both sides, or as though the former pretext were not enough to kindle God's wrath, so they joined to it the second, which is no less grievous;
3:208
因為我以為,攔阻有用的人和硬塞無用的人,這兩件事是同樣可怕的;
for I think it is equally dreadful both to bar the useful and to thrust in the useless;
3:209
and this happens so that the flock of Christ may be able to find consolation and to take breath from nowhere.
3:210
Are not these things worthy of countless thunderbolts? Are they not worthy of a Gehenna more fierce, not only of this one that has been threatened against us? Yet nevertheless He bears with and endures so great evils, He who does not desire the death of the sinner, but that he should turn and live.
3:211
How could anyone marvel enough at His loving-kindness? How could one be astounded enough at His mercy? Those of Christ corrupt the things of Christ worse than enemies and foes, yet the good One still deals kindly and calls to repentance.
3:212
Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You.
3:213
What an abyss of loving-kindness is with You! What riches of forbearance! Those who, on account of Your name, from base and dishonored have become honored and conspicuous, use the honor against Him who honored them, and dare the things not to be dared, and outrage the holy things, thrusting away and casting out the diligent, so that in great calm and with utmost security the wicked may overturn everything they wish.
3:214
你若也願意明白這禍患的緣由,便要發現它們與前面的相似;
And if you wish to learn the causes of this evil too, you will find them similar to the former ones;
3:215
因為它們有一個根、可說是有一個母——就是嫉妒;
for they have one root and, as one might say, one mother—envy;
3:216
but they themselves are not of one form, but differ.
3:217
因為一個說:『讓這人被逐出,因為他年輕』;另一個說:『因為他不懂諂媚』;又一個說:『因為他得罪了某人』;
For one says, 'Let this man be cast out because he is young'; another, 'because he does not know how to flatter'; another, 'because he gave offense to so-and-so';
3:218
又一個是為著某人不致憂傷——因那人看見自己所提名的被否決、而這另一人卻得認可;又一個說:『因為他仁慈、公允』;又一個說:『因為他叫犯罪的人懼怕』;又一個則為著別樣這類的緣由;
and one, so that so-and-so may not be grieved at seeing the man he himself nominated rejected while this other is approved; another, because he is kind and fair-minded; another, because he is fearsome to sinners; another, for some other such cause;
3:219
for they are not at a loss for as many pretexts as they wish.
3:220
當他們別無他詞時,竟連那實際存在的事也能挑剔,藉口說人不該一下子被提到這尊榮,乃要漸漸地、一點一點地;
When they have nothing else, they can fault even what really exists, alleging that one ought not to be brought to this honor all at once, but gently and little by little;
3:221
and they could find as many other causes as they please.
3:222
But I would gladly ask you here: what, then, must the bishop do, contending against so many winds? How shall he stand against so many waves? How shall he repel all these assaults? For if he handles the matter with right reason, all become enemies and foes both to him and to those chosen, and do everything to contend against him, casting in dissensions day by day and heaping countless mockeries upon those chosen, until either they expel these or bring in their own men; and it becomes much like what would happen if a helmsman should have pirates sailing along inside the very ship that is under sail, continually and at every hour plotting against him and the sailors and the passengers.
3:223
可是他若把討好他們看得高過自己的得救,接納了那不該接納的人,便要以神代替他們作仇敵——還有什麼比這更可怕的呢?而且他與那些人的關係,反要比先前更為棘手,因為他們彼此狼狽為奸、勢力愈發壯大;
But if he prefers gratifying them above his own salvation, receiving those whom he ought not, he will have God for an enemy instead of them—and what could be harsher than that? And his relations with those people will be more difficult for him than before, since they all work together with one another and become the stronger for it;
3:224
for just as when fierce winds fall upon one another from opposite directions, the sea that was till then at rest suddenly rages and rises into peaks and destroys those sailing upon it, so too the calm of the Church, having received corrupting men, is filled with storm and many shipwrecks.
3:225
Consider, then, what manner of man he must be who is going to hold out against so great a storm and to manage well so many hindrances to the common good.
3:226
For he must be both dignified and free from arrogance, both awe-inspiring and kindly, both authoritative and sociable, both impartial and obliging, both humble and not servile, both vehement and gentle, in order that he may be able with ease to contend against all these things, and to bring forward the fit man with full authority, even if all oppose, and to refuse with the same authority the unfit one, even if all are agreed, but to look to one thing only, the building up of the Church, and to do nothing for the sake of enmity or favor.
3:227
我推辭這事的職事,在你看來是合理的麼?而且我連這一切都還沒有向你說盡呢;
Do I seem to you to have declined the ministry of this matter with good reason? And yet I have not even gone through everything with you;
3:228
可是你不要厭倦於容忍一位朋友、一位真誠的朋友,他正想就你所控告的事說服你;
but do not grow weary of bearing with a friend, a genuine one, who wishes to persuade you concerning the things for which you bring charges;
3:229
for these things are useful to you not only for the defense on our behalf, but perhaps will also contribute no small gain toward the very administration of the matter.
3:230
For it is necessary that the one who is going to enter upon this way of life should first search out everything well, and so take up the ministry.
3:231
Why so? Because, if for nothing else, at least the not being taken by surprise—when these things befall—will be the advantage of him who knows everything clearly.
3:232
Concerning widows. Do you wish, then, that we go first to the care of widows, or to the guardianship of virgins, or to the difficulty of the judicial function? For in each of these the concern is different, and the fear greater than the concern.
3:233
首先,讓我們從那看似比其餘更無關緊要的開始:照管寡婦,在那照顧她們的人看來,似乎所帶來的掛慮不過到花費錢財為止;
And first, that we may make our beginning from what seems to be of less consequence than the rest, the care of widows seems to those who attend to them to bring concern only as far as the expenditure of money;
3:234
but it is not so; rather, here too much examination is needed, when one must enroll them, since to register them simply and at random has wrought countless terrible things.
3:235
For they have ruined households and torn apart marriages, and have often been caught in unseemly conduct—in thefts and petty trading and other such things.
3:236
And to have such women fed from the Church's funds brings both punishment from God and the utmost condemnation from men, and renders those who wish to do good more reluctant.
3:237
For who would ever choose to spend on those who slander the name of Christ the money which was offered to Christ
3:238
to give? On account of this, much and exact examination must be made, so that not only the aforesaid women, but not even those able to support themselves, may injure the table of the destitute.
3:239
在這查驗之後,緊接著還有另一樣不小的掛慮:就是叫她們的生活所需,如同從泉源中一般,源源不絕地流向她們,永不間斷;
And after this examination, another no small concern follows: that the means of their sustenance may flow to them all at once, as from springs, and never run dry;
3:240
for involuntary poverty is somehow an insatiable evil, given to complaint and ingratitude.
3:241
And there is need of much understanding and much zeal, so as to stop their mouths, removing every pretext for accusation.
3:242
如今眾人每逢看見一個人不為錢財所動,便立刻宣告他配擔此管家之職;
Now the many, whenever they see someone superior to money, straightway declare him fit for this stewardship;
3:243
but I do not think that this magnanimity alone ever suffices for him; rather, he must indeed have it before all else—for without it he would be a destroyer rather than a protector, a wolf instead of a shepherd—but along with it he must seek another quality too, if he happens to possess it.
3:244
And this is the cause of all good things to men—forbearance—which, as into some calm harbor, moors and brings the soul safely in.
3:245
For the class of widows, both because of their poverty and because of their age and because of their nature, employs an immoderate kind of frankness—so it is better to put it—and they cry out unseasonably and find fault in vain and lament over the very things for which they ought to be thankful, and accuse over the very things for which they ought to be grateful.
3:246
And the presider must bear all things nobly, and be provoked neither at the unseasonable annoyances nor at the irrational complaints.
3:247
因為這一類人理當為其不幸蒙人憐憫,而非受人羞辱;
For it is just that this class should be pitied for their misfortunes, not insulted;
3:248
since to trample upon their misfortunes and to add to the pain caused by poverty the pain that comes from insult would be the extreme of cruelty.
3:249
Therefore a certain most wise man, having looked to both the avarice and the haughtiness of human nature, and having well learned that the nature of poverty is a terrible thing—able to bring down even the noblest soul and often to persuade it to be shameless about the same things—in order that no one, being asked by them, may be angered, nor that the one who ought to help, provoked by the constancy of their entreaty, may become an enemy, prepares him to be gentle and easy of access to the one in need, saying:
3:250
'Incline your ear to the poor man without grief, and answer him peaceably in gentleness.' And leaving aside the one who provokes—for what could one say to him who lies prostrate?—he addresses the one able to bear that man's weakness, exhorting him to set the poor man upright by the kindliness of his look and the gentleness of his words, even before the gift.
3:251
But if anyone does not take their things, yet heaps countless reproaches upon them and insults and is provoked against them, he not only fails to lighten the despondency that comes from poverty by his giving, but by his revilings makes the trouble even greater.
3:252
因為,縱使她們因肚腹的需要而被迫極其厚顏,她們仍為這身不由己而傷痛;
For even if they are forced to be exceedingly shameless on account of the necessity of the belly, yet nonetheless they grieve at this compulsion;
3:253
whenever, then, through fear of hunger they are compelled to beg, and through begging to be shameless, and through being shameless to be again insulted, a manifold power of despondency, bearing much gloom, sweeps down upon their soul.
3:254
凡照顧這些婦人的人,必須如此恆久忍耐,以致他不僅不藉自己的惱怒加增她們的灰心,反要藉著安慰使那既有的灰心大半得以平息;
And the one who cares for these women must be so long-suffering as not only not to increase their despondency by his vexations, but also to lull most of the existing despondency to rest through encouragement;
3:255
for just as that man who was insulted does not perceive the benefit from the money because of the blow that comes from the insult, so this man who has heard a kindly word and received the gift with encouragement rejoices the more and is glad, and the gift becomes double to him by reason of the manner.
3:256
我說這些話,不是出於我自己,乃是出於那給了前面那些勸言的人;
And these things I utter not from myself, but from him who gave the former counsels;
3:257
for 'My child,' he says, 'do not mix blame with your good deeds, nor any grief of words with all your giving.'
3:258
'Does not the dew give relief from the scorching heat?' So
3:259
'Behold, a word is better than a good gift, and both are with the gracious man.' And the protector of these women must be not only fair and forbearing, but no less skilled in management; for if this is lacking, the funds of the poor again fall into the same loss.
3:260
For already someone entrusted with this ministry, having gathered much gold, did not himself devour it, but neither did he spend it on the needy except for a little, but buried the greater part and kept it, until a difficult time came upon him and delivered it into the hands of the enemy.
3:261
Therefore there is need of much forethought, that the resources of the Church may neither abound nor fall short, but that all that is gathered may be quickly scattered to the needy, while the treasures of the Church are stored up in the good purposes of the ruled.
3:262
And the reception of strangers and the care of the sick—how much expenditure of money do you think they need, and how much exactness and understanding in those who superintend them? For this expense must be in no way less than the one already mentioned, but often even greater; and the one who superintends must be somewhat resourceful, with reverence and prudence, so as to dispose those who have possessions to give of their own both generously and without grief, lest, in providing for the relief of the sick, he wound the souls of those who give.
3:263
並且在此必須顯出遠為更大的熱切與殷勤;
And here one must display far more eagerness and zeal;
3:264
for the sick are somehow a hard-to-please and peevish thing.
3:265
And unless much exactness and care be brought to bear on every side, even that small thing overlooked suffices to work great evils upon the sick man.
3:266
論到童女。可是在照管童女的事上,那懼怕更大,因為這所擁有的更為貴重,這羊群也比其餘的更為尊貴;
Concerning virgins. But in the care of virgins the fear is greater, by as much as the possession is more precious and this flock more royal than the others;
3:267
for already into the choir of these holy ones too countless women full of countless evils have burst in, and here the grief is greater.
3:268
And just as it is not the same thing for a free maiden and for her serving-girl to sin, so neither for a virgin and a widow.
3:269
因為對後者(寡婦)而言,無論是閒談、彼此辱罵、諂媚、厚顏、處處拋頭露面、還是在市集中走來走去,都已成了無所謂的事;
For to the latter it has become a matter of indifference both to chatter and to revile one another, and to flatter and to be shameless, and to appear everywhere, and to go about the marketplace;
3:270
but the virgin has stripped for greater things, and has emulated the highest philosophy, and professes to display on earth the citizenship of the angels, and has set before herself to accomplish, together with this flesh, the things of the bodiless powers.
3:271
And she must neither make excessive and frequent outings, nor is it permitted her to utter words idly and in vain, and she ought not even to know the name of reviling and flattery.
3:272
On account of this she needs a most secure guarding and more of an alliance.
3:273
因為那聖潔的仇敵時常更加緊盯著她們、伺機埋伏,一旦有人失足跌倒便要將她吞噬;加之暗中圖謀的人甚多,而在這一切之上,還有本性自身的狂亂;
For since the enemy of holiness ever stands over them and lies in wait the more, ready to swallow them up should anyone slip and fall; and since the men who plot against them are many, and on top of all this there is the madness of nature itself;
3:274
the battle line is drawn up against her on two fronts—the one assailing from without, the other harassing from within.
3:275
For these reasons the one who superintends has much fear, and still greater is the danger and the anguish, should anything unwished-for—which God forbid—ever come to pass.
3:276
若女兒對父親乃是隱密的不眠之由,對她的掛慮趕走他的睡眠——當所懼的不過是怕她不嫁、年華虛度、或遭人厭棄——那麼一個沒有這些憂慮、卻有比這些大得多的憂慮的人,又將怎樣受苦呢?因為在這裡所被輕慢的不是一個丈夫,乃是基督自己;
For if a daughter is to her father a hidden cause of sleeplessness, and anxiety over her drives away his sleep—where there is such dread merely lest she remain unwed, or pass her prime, or be hated—what will he suffer who has none of these cares, but others far greater than these? For here the one slighted is not a husband, but Christ himself;
3:277
nor does the barrenness end in mere reproach, but the dread thing issues in the perdition of a soul.
3:278
For 'every tree,' he says, 'that does not bring forth good fruit is cut down and cast into the fire.' And to her who is hated by the Bridegroom it is not enough to receive a writ of divorce and depart; rather, he gives eternal punishment as the penalty of that hatred.
3:279
屬肉身的父親有許多事使他看守女兒成為容易的;
And the father after the flesh has many things that make the guarding of his daughter easy for him;
3:280
乳母、眾多婢女、以及家室的穩妥,都協助這作父親的看守童女;
a nurse and a host of maidservants and the security of the house all help the parent toward the keeping of the maiden;
3:281
for she is not permitted to go out continually into the marketplace, nor, when she does go out, is she compelled to be seen by any of those she meets, the darkness of evening no less than the walls of the house concealing her who wishes not to be seen.
3:282
除這些以外,她也免去了一切可能逼她落入男子目光之下的緣由;
And apart from these, she is freed from every occasion that might ever force her into the sight of men;
3:283
因為無論是為生活所需的操勞、惡人的欺凌、或別的這類事,都不至於使她落入必須與人相遇的境地,因為父親成了她的一切;
for neither care for necessities, nor the abuses of wrongdoers, nor anything else of the kind puts her under the necessity of such an encounter, since the father becomes to her instead of all things;
3:284
and she has but one care alone—to do or say nothing unworthy of the decorum that befits her.
3:285
但在這裡,有許多事使那作父親的看守成為艱難,甚至是不可能的;
But here there are many things that make the guarding difficult for the father—or rather, even impossible;
3:286
因為他既不能把她留在屋內與自己同住;
for neither could he keep her indoors with himself;
3:287
for such a cohabitation is neither seemly nor free from danger.
3:288
For even if they themselves suffer no harm, but remain preserving their holiness intact, they will give no less an account for the souls they have caused to stumble than if they had chanced to sin against one another.
3:289
And since this is not possible, it is neither easy to discern the movements of her soul—to prune away those that are disorderly, and to train those that are orderly and rhythmical, leading them toward what is better—nor is it easy to keep watch over her goings-out.
3:290
因為貧窮與無人庇護,使他不能成為那審察她所當有端莊的嚴密監察者;
For poverty and the lack of protection do not allow him to become a strict examiner of the seemliness that befits her;
3:291
for whenever she is compelled to attend to everything herself, she has, if she should wish not to be chaste, many pretexts for going abroad.
3:292
那管理她的人必須吩咐她常住在家,斷絕這些藉口,供給她生活所需的充足,並安排人在這些事上服事她;
And the one who has charge of her must bid her remain always at home and cut off these pretexts, providing both a sufficiency of necessities and someone to minister to her in these things;
3:293
and he must also keep her away from funerals and all-night vigils.
3:294
For that serpent of many devices knows—yes, he knows—how to scatter his venom even through good deeds.
3:295
And the virgin must be fortified on every side, and go forth from the house but seldom in the whole year, only when unavoidable and necessary occasions press upon her.
3:296
And if anyone should say that none of these is a task for a bishop to handle, let him know well that the cares and the responsibilities for each of these things are referred back to him.
3:297
And it is far more profitable for him, while doing everything himself, to be free from the charges which he must of necessity bear for the sins of others, than, being released from the ministry, to tremble at giving account for what others have done.
3:298
此外,凡親自辦理這些事的人,行起一切來都極其順利;
Besides this, the man who does these things by himself goes through everything with great ease;
3:299
but the one who is compelled to do this by persuading the minds of all does not have so much relief from being released from doing it himself, as he has troubles and tumults on account of those who oppose and contend with his judgments.
3:300
我實在無法盡述為這些童女所有的掛慮;
But I could not recount all the cares on behalf of the virgins;
3:301
for even when they must be enrolled, they cause no ordinary troubles to the one entrusted with this administration.
3:302
論審判。那關乎審判的部分有無數的煩擾、極多的勞碌,其艱難甚至超過那些坐堂審理世俗案件之人所擔負的;
Concerning judgments. The part that concerns judgments has countless vexations, and much occupation, and as many difficulties as not even those who sit to judge secular cases bear;
3:303
for it is a hard task both to find out the just thing itself, and, having found it, not to corrupt it.
3:304
不僅有勞碌與艱難,更附帶著危險,且是不小的危險;
And not only occupation and difficulty, but danger too, and that no small one, is added;
3:305
for already some of the weaker, falling into troubles, since they obtained no protection, have made shipwreck concerning the faith.
3:306
因為許多受了冤屈的人,恨那不幫助他們的,並不亞於恨那虧負他們的;
For many of those who have been wronged hate those who do not help them no less than they hate those who wronged them;
3:307
他們既不肯顧念事情的曲折、時勢的艱難、祭司權柄的限度,也不顧任何這類事,反倒是不肯寬容的審判官,只認得一種申辯——就是除去那纏累他們的禍患;
and they are willing to take into account neither the perversion of affairs, nor the difficulty of the times, nor the measure of priestly power, nor anything else of the kind, but are merciless judges, knowing but one defense—the riddance of the evils that beset them;
3:308
...deliverance from the evils that beset them.
3:309
and the one who is unable to provide this, though he allege ten thousand pretexts, will never escape their condemnation.
3:310
既題到庇護援助,來,讓我為你揭開另一個招致抱怨的緣由;
And since I have mentioned protection, come, let me uncover for you yet another occasion of complaints;
3:311
因為那作主教的,若不比市井之人更天天遍訪各家,由此便生出無數的怨懟;
for if the one who holds the bishopric does not go round the houses every day more than do the men of the marketplace, untold offenses arise from this;
3:312
for not only the sick, but the healthy too wish to be visited, not because piety calls them to this, but because most of them lay claim rather to honor and dignity.
3:313
And if it ever happens that he visits one of the richer and more powerful more frequently, when some need presses, for the common benefit of the Church, he straightway incurs from this a reputation for flattery and fawning.
3:314
我又何必說庇護與探訪呢?單從問候之事,他們就背負如此沉重的指控,以致常常被壓得喘不過氣,因沮喪而消沉;甚至連一個眼神也要被追究;
And why do I speak of protection and visits? From mere greetings alone they bear such a weight of charges as often to be burdened and to sink down under despondency; indeed, they are already called to account even for a glance;
3:315
for the things done by them quite simply the many scrutinize exactly, examining the measure of the voice, and the disposition of the look, and the amount of laughter.
3:316
有人說:『他對某某縱情而笑,面帶喜色、高聲招呼,對我卻冷淡,隨隨便便』;
'So-and-so,' he says, 'he laughed with liberally, and addressed with a beaming face and a loud voice, but me less, and just as it happened';
3:317
and if, when many are sitting together, he does not turn his eyes everywhere as he converses, the many call the thing an insult.
3:318
那麼,除非極其剛強的人,誰能抵擋這麼多控告者,要麼全然不被他們指控,要麼在被指控後得以脫身呢?人固然應當連控告者都沒有;
Who then, unless he be exceedingly strong, could hold out against so many accusers, either so as not to be charged by them at all, or so as to escape after the charge? For one must indeed have no accusers;
3:319
但若這不可能,至少要從他們所提的指控中得以開釋;
but if this is impossible, then to be acquitted of the charges brought by them;
3:320
but if even this is not easy, but some take pleasure in accusing at random and without cause, then nobly to stand against the despondency arising from these reproaches.
3:321
因為那被公正指控的人,反倒容易容忍那控告他的;
For the one justly accused will easily bear with his accuser;
3:322
for since there is no accuser more bitter than the conscience, therefore, when we have first been caught by that most grievous one, we easily bear those from without, who are gentler.
3:323
但那自覺心中無惡的人,當他無故被控告時,既易被激至發怒,又易陷入沮喪,除非他預先操練自己的心,能擔當眾人的愚妄;
But the one who is conscious of nothing wicked in himself, when he is accused without cause, is both quickly carried away to anger and easily sinks into despondency, unless he has beforehand trained his soul to bear the follies of the many;
3:324
for it is not, indeed it is not possible for one slandered at random and condemned not to be troubled and to suffer something at such unreasonableness.
3:325
What could one say of the griefs they endure whenever it is necessary to cut someone off from the fullness of the Church? Would that the dread thing stopped at grief!
3:326
然而事實上,還有不小的毀壞;
But as it is, there is also no small ruin;
3:327
for there is fear lest that man, being punished beyond what is fitting, suffer that very thing spoken by the blessed Paul, and be swallowed up by overmuch sorrow.
3:328
Here too, then, there is need of the greatest exactness, lest the occasion of benefit become for him a source of greater loss.
3:329
For of whatever sins that man commits after such treatment, the physician who did not cut the wound well shares in the wrath that is for each of these.
3:330
How many punishments, then, must one expect when he is required to give account not only for his own transgressions, but is placed in extreme danger also for the sins committed by others? For if, while giving account for our own faults, we shudder, as not being able to escape that fire, what must the one who is to make defense for so many expect to suffer? For that this is true, hear the blessed Paul speaking—or rather, not him, but Christ speaking in him:
3:331
'Obey those who lead you and submit, for they watch over your souls as those who will give account.' Is this fear of the threat a small one? It cannot be told.
3:332
But all these things are enough to persuade even the very disobedient and hard-hearted that it was not out of madness or love of glory that we were seized, but only out of fear for ourselves, and looking
3:333
to the magnitude of the matter, we fled this flight.
