1:1
Should writings be left behind not at all, or only for some? And if the former, what is the use of letters? But if the latter, should they be for the earnest, or for those who are not? It would surely be ridiculous that one who rejects the writing of the earnest should approve those who compose for such as are not earnest.
1:2
But then, is it to be permitted to Theopompus and Timaeus to compose myths and blasphemies, and further to Epicurus, who is the author of atheism, and also to Hipponax and Archilochus to write so shamefully — while the one who proclaims the truth is to be hindered from leaving benefit to those who come after? It is good, I think, also to leave behind good children for those who follow.
1:3
Children, indeed, are the offspring of bodies, but words are the offspring of the soul.
1:4
Hence we call those who have instructed us fathers; and wisdom is communal and loves mankind.
1:5
My son, if you receive the word of my commandment and hide it with yourself, your ear shall hearken to wisdom.
1:6
This signifies that the word, being sown, is hidden as in earth — the soul of the one who learns — and this is a spiritual planting.
1:7
And you shall incline your heart to understanding, and you shall incline it to admonition for your son.
1:8
因為我想,靈魂與靈魂相連,靈與靈相接,藉著道的播種,使所投下的種子生長,並使之得生命;
For soul, I think, joined to soul, and spirit to spirit, in the sowing of the word, causes what has been cast down to grow and brings it to life;
1:9
and every one who is instructed in obedience to the one instructing him is a son.
1:10
My son, it says, do not forget my laws.
1:11
But if knowledge is not for all, then writings are, as the makers of proverbs say, a donkey to the lyre, for the many.
1:12
Swine, at any rate, delight in mud rather than in clean water.
1:13
For this reason, says the Lord, I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand — the Lord not thereby supplying them with ignorance (for it is not permissible to think so), but rather exposing prophetically the ignorance already present in them, and declaring beforehand that they would be unable to understand what was said.
1:14
Already it is clearly shown, out of his abundance, that the Savior himself, according to the capacity of the recipient — which capacity ought to be increased through practice — distributed his possessions to his servants.
1:15
and afterward returning again to settle accounts with them.
1:16
when, having accepted those who increased his silver — those faithful in a little — and having promised to set them over many things, he commanded them to enter into the joy of their lord; but to the one who had hidden the silver entrusted to him instead of lending it out at interest, and who returned merely what he had received, idle, he said, 'Wicked and slothful servant, you ought to have put my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back my own with interest.'
1:17
for this the useless servant will be cast into the outer darkness.
1:18
You then, Paul says, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and the things you have heard from me through many witnesses,
1:19
these commit to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.
1:20
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a workman who has no need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
1:21
If, then, both proclaim the word — the one by writing, the other by speech — how should both not be acceptable, having made faith active through love? But God is not responsible for the fault of one who does not choose what is best.
1:22
For it is the task of the one to lend out the word at interest, and of the other to test it and either choose it or not; and the judgment is decided within themselves.
1:23
然而宣講之學,無論它以何種方式運作——藉著手(書寫)或藉著舌頭(言語)——既都能造福於人,便在某種意義上已具有天使般(傳報者)的性質;
But the art of heralding is already, in a sense, angelic — in whichever way it works, whether by the hand or by the tongue — being beneficial;
1:24
因為那順著聖靈撒種的,必從聖靈收成永生;
for he who sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life;
1:25
It contributes, at any rate, the greatest benefits to the one who happens upon it by divine providence: a beginning of faith, an eagerness for right conduct, an impulse toward the truth, a searching movement, a trace of knowledge — in short, it gives occasions for salvation.
1:26
And those who have been genuinely nourished on the words of truth, having received provisions for eternal life, take wing toward heaven.
1:27
Most admirably, then, the apostle says in everything: 'commending ourselves as ministers of God... as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things;'
1:28
our mouth is open to you.
1:29
'I charge you,' he says, writing to Timothy, 'before God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, that you keep these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.'
1:30
It is necessary, then, that both of these test themselves: the one, whether he is worthy to speak and to leave behind written records; the other, whether he is entitled to listen and to read.
1:31
In this respect also, some, after distributing the Eucharist, as is customary, permit each one of the people to take his own portion.
1:32
For conscience is the best guide toward the accurate choice and avoidance of things, and its firm foundation is an upright life together with fitting learning; and to follow others who have already been tested and have set things right is best both for the understanding of the truth and for the performance of the commandments.
1:33
So then, whoever eats the bread and drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
1:34
But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
1:35
It is fitting, then, for the one who has undertaken the benefit of his neighbor to consider whether he has not rashly leapt into teaching out of rivalry with certain persons, whether the communication of the word is not done out of love of glory, whether he reaps only this reward — the salvation of his hearers — and whether he does not speak merely to please, thereby also avoiding the reproach of bribery, he who speaks through written records.
1:36
For neither at any time were we found using words of flattery, as you know, says the apostle, nor a pretext for greed — God is witness — nor seeking glory from men, neither from you nor from others.
1:37
雖然我們身為基督的使徒,原可以有權柄叫人尊重;
though we could have made demands as apostles of Christ;
1:38
but we became gentle in your midst, as a nurse cherishes her own children.
1:39
In the same way, one must also watch those who partake of the divine words, lest they have come to this simply for the sake of idle curiosity, as though viewing the buildings of cities, or lest they approach for the sake of partaking of worldly goods, having learned that those consecrated to Christ are generous in sharing what is needful.
1:40
但那些偽善之人,就由他們去吧;
But as for the hypocrites, let them indeed be left alone;
1:41
but if someone wishes not merely to seem just, but to be just, it is fitting for him to be conscious within himself of the best things.
1:42
If, then, the harvest is indeed plentiful but the workers are few, it is truly fitting to beseech that we may have as great an abundance of workers as possible.
1:43
In whichever way the Lord's laborer sows the noble wheat and causes the ears to grow and reaps them, he will indeed prove to be a truly divine husbandman.
1:44
'Labor,' says the Lord, 'not for the food that perishes, but for that which endures to eternal life'; and nourishment is received both through food and through words.
1:45
And truly blessed are the peacemakers, who re-teach those who here in life are warred upon by error through ignorance, and lead them across into the peace that is in word and in a life lived according to God, and who feed those who hunger for righteousness by the distribution of bread.
1:46
For there are also souls that have their own kinds of nourishment: some grow by full knowledge and understanding, while others are fed on Greek philosophy, of which — just as with nuts — not the whole is edible.
1:47
He who plants and he who waters, being ministers of him who gives the growth, are one in their ministry, but each shall receive his own reward according to his own labor.
1:48
'You are God's field, God's building,' according to the apostle.
1:49
The word must not be handed over freely to those who have been trained in all sorts of rhetorical arts and are puffed up with the power of arguments, to those whose souls have already been pre-occupied and have not been previously emptied.
1:50
But when someone chooses to be feasted out of faith, he is firm in the reception of the divine words, possessing faith as a reasonable judgment.
1:51
and from this, persuasion follows for him in abundance.
1:52
And this, then, was that prophetic saying:
1:53
If you do not believe, neither will you understand at all.
1:54
As we have opportunity, then, let us do good to all, but especially to those of the household of faith.
1:55
And let each of these, giving thanks after the manner of the blessed David, sing:
1:56
You shall sprinkle me with hyssop, and I shall be cleansed; you shall wash me, and I shall be made whiter than snow.
1:57
求你使我得聽歡喜快樂的聲音;
You shall make me hear joy and gladness;
1:58
the bones that have been humbled shall rejoice.
1:59
Turn your face away from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities.
1:60
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
1:61
Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your Holy Spirit away from me.
1:62
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a governing spirit.
1:63
He, then, who speaks to those present both tests them by time and judges by discernment, and distinguishes from among the rest the one capable of hearing, closely observing their words, their manners, their character, their way of life, their movements, their relations, their look, their utterance — the crossroads, the rock, the trodden path, the fruit-bearing earth, the land overgrown with weeds.
1:64
the fertile and good land, well cultivated, capable of multiplying the seed many times over.
1:65
But he who speaks through written records consecrates himself to God, crying out these things in writing — not writing for the sake of gain, nor for the sake of vainglory, not being overcome by attachment, not being enslaved by fear, not being elated by pleasure.
1:66
but enjoying only the salvation of his readers, of which he does not even partake in the present, but awaits in hope the recompense that will assuredly be given by him who has promised to render to the laborers their wages according to merit.
1:67
but neither ought the one who writes for grown men desire any recompense.
1:68
因為並非那誇耀善行的人已藉著美名領受了報償,而那為求報償才行合宜之事的人——無論是身為施惠者而急欲領取,或是身為作惡者而設法規避報應——就不受世俗習氣所牽纏;
For it is not the case that the one who boasts of a good deed has received his reward through renown, while the one who does what is fitting for the sake of a recompense — whether, as a benefactor, eager to receive it, or, as an evildoer, trying to evade the requital — is not entangled in worldly custom;
1:69
δεῖ ...
but one ought, as far as possible, to imitate the Lord.
1:70
and this would be the one who serves the will of God, having received freely, giving freely.
1:71
Receiving that very way of life itself as a notable reward.
1:72
But it shall not enter... into the holy things — 'the wages of a harlot,' as he says.
1:73
Accordingly, it is forbidden to offer at the altar 'the price of a dog.'
1:74
But whoever has had the eye of the soul dulled toward its own proper light by bad nourishment and bad teaching, let him proceed toward the truth that makes the unwritten things known through what is written.
1:75
'You who thirst, go to the water,' says Isaiah, and 'drink water from your own vessels,' Solomon exhorts.
1:76
Thus in the Laws, Plato — the philosopher who drew from the Hebrews — commands that farmers should not irrigate their land nor take water from others,
1:77
unless they first dig on their own land, down to what is called the 'virgin' stratum, and find the earth waterless.
1:78
因為單為缺乏供應並非公道,供給懶惰更非美事;
For it is not right to relieve mere scarcity, nor good to provision idleness;
1:79
wherefore, as Pythagoras used to say, it is reasonable to help load a burden upon someone, but it is not fitting to help take it down.
1:80
Scripture kindles together the spark of the soul and strains its own proper eye toward contemplation — perhaps also implanting something, as a farmer does when grafting, but chiefly stirring up what already lies within.
1:81
For many among us, according to the divine apostle, are weak and sick, and not a few sleep in death.
1:82
But if we examined ourselves, we would not be judged.
1:83
Now this treatise is by no means a piece of writing artfully composed for display; rather, these memoranda are being stored up for me as a treasure against old age, a remedy for forgetfulness, a mere image and shadow-sketch of those vivid, living discourses, and of those blessed and truly notable men whom I was accounted worthy to hear.
1:84
……來自希臘(其中一位出自科里敘利亞,另一位出自埃及),另有幾位遍及東方各地;
...of Greece (one of these was from Coele-Syria, the other from Egypt), while others were throughout the East;
1:85
and of these, one was of the Assyrians, the other a Hebrew by origin, in Palestine.
1:86
But having met the last one — though in power he was truly the first — I found rest, having tracked him down, hidden away in Egypt.
1:87
He was in truth a Sicilian bee, culling the flowers of the prophetic and apostolic meadow, and he engendered in the souls of his hearers a pure, unadulterated treasure of knowledge.
1:88
But these men, preserving the true tradition of the blessed teaching directly from the holy apostles Peter and James, John and Paul — son receiving it from father, though few are like their fathers — came, by God's help, even to us, to deposit those ancestral and apostolic seeds.
1:89
And I know well that they will rejoice — not, I mean, delighted with this manner of expression, but solely with the preservation effected through this record.
1:90
For it is, I think, because the soul longs to keep the blessed tradition from slipping away that such an outline as this is made.
1:91
'But the father of a man who loves wisdom shall rejoice.'
1:92
Wells, when drawn from, yield clearer water, but that of which no one partakes turns to corruption.
1:93
Use likewise keeps iron purer, whereas disuse breeds rust in it.
1:94
In short, to put it briefly, joint exercise produces a healthy condition, both for spirits and for bodies.
1:95
No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but on the lampstand, to give light to those accounted worthy of that same feast.
1:96
For what benefit is wisdom that does not make wise the one capable of understanding? Moreover, the Savior always saves and always works, even as he beholds the Father working.
1:97
One who teaches learns the more, and one who speaks often listens together with those who hear him.
1:98
For there is one Teacher of both the speaker and the hearer, who wells up both mind and word alike; wherefore the Lord has not forbidden us to keep sabbath from what is good, but has permitted the sharing of the divine mysteries, and of that holy light, with those able to receive it.
1:99
Thus he did not reveal to many what was not meant for many, but to a few, to whom he knew it was fitting — those capable of receiving these things and being shaped by them.
1:100
But secret things, like God himself, are entrusted to speech, not to writing.
1:101
And should someone say it is written, 'there is nothing hidden that shall not be made manifest, nor covered that shall not be revealed,' let him hear from us as well that by this very saying Scripture has foretold that the hidden thing will be made manifest to the one who perceives it in a hidden manner; and to whoever is capable of receiving what is handed down in a veiled way, the veiled thing will be disclosed as it truly is; and what is hidden to the many shall become manifest to the few.
1:102
Otherwise, why do not all know the truth? Why was righteousness not loved, if righteousness belongs to all? But indeed, the mysteries are handed down mystically, so that what is uttered may exist in the mouth of the one speaking and of the one to whom it is spoken — or rather, not in audible speech at all, but in the very act of being understood.
1:103
And God has given to the church some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelists, some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints, for the work of ministry, for the building up of the body of Christ.
1:104
Now the writing of these memoranda of mine, I well know, is a feeble thing when set beside that graced spirit which we were accounted worthy to obey; yet it may be an image, recalling to the one struck by the thyrsus the archetype he once beheld.
1:105
'For,' it says, 'speak to a wise man, and he will grow wiser'; and 'to him who has, more shall be given.'
1:106
It does not profess to interpret the ineffable things adequately — far from it — but only to remind us, whether for those times when we might forget, or so that we might not forget at all.
1:107
And I know well that many things have slipped away from us, having fallen unrecorded through the length of time.
1:108
Hence, to lighten the weakness of my memory, and to provide for myself a saving reminder in the form of a systematic exposition of the chief points, I have necessarily made use of this outline.
1:109
...has escaped me, as have all those things that were being extinguished, withering away within the mind; for such a ministry is not easy for those who have not been tested.
1:110
But in rekindling these things by means of memoranda, I willingly pass over some, choosing with discernment, fearing to write what I was also careful not to say — not out of any envy whatsoever, for that would not be right, but fearing rather for those who might come upon these writings, lest they somehow stumble in yet another way, and lest we be found, as those who speak in proverbs say, 'reaching out a sword to a child.'
1:111
For it is impossible that what has been written should not eventually fall abroad, even though it has, at least on my part, remained unpublished; but circulating as it does, and possessed of only the one, unchanging, written voice, it gives no answer to the one who questions it beyond what has already been written; for it necessarily requires a helper — either the one who composed it, or someone else who has walked in the very same track.
1:112
There are also things which my writing will merely hint at; some it will set forth plainly, while others it will only mention; and it will attempt both to speak while concealing, and to disclose while veiling, and to show while remaining silent.
1:113
It will set forth the doctrines taught by the notable heresies, and will argue against them all that needs to be laid down beforehand for the knowledge attained through epoptic contemplation — which will proceed for us according to the glorious and venerable rule of the tradition, advancing from the origin of the world — setting forth in advance whatever must necessarily be treated first concerning the contemplation of nature, and clearing away beforehand whatever stands in the way of the sequence of the argument, so that the ears may be ready to receive the gnostic tradition, the ground having first been cleared of thorns and of all grass, as a farmer does, in preparation for the planting of a vineyard.
1:114
For there is a contest, and a preliminary contest, and mysteries before the mysteries; nor will our memoranda hesitate to make full use, for the finest ends, of philosophy and the rest of preliminary education.
1:115
For it is reasonable, according to the apostle, not only to become as a Jew for the sake of the Hebrews and those under the law, but also to become as a Greek for the sake of the Greeks, that we might gain them all.
1:116
And in the letter to the Colossians he writes, 'admonishing every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ.'
1:117
And in yet another way, the elegance of contemplation is also fitting to the sketch-outline of these memoranda.
1:118
Indeed, the abundance of pleasant, useful learning is like a seasoning interwoven with the food of an athlete — not one given to luxury, but one who, through zeal, gains a good appetite.
1:119
Thus, as we chant, we harmoniously relax the over-strained pitch of solemnity.
1:120
And just as those who wish to address the populace often do so through a herald, so that what is said may be more clearly heard, so also here — since our discourse, spoken before the actual tradition is imparted, is addressed to many — we must therefore set forth their customary opinions and the sayings that resound to them at every point, through which the hearers will more readily be turned.
1:121
And, to put it briefly (for among many small pearls there is the one surpassing pearl, and in a great catch of fish there is the choice fish), in time and with labor, given a good helper at hand, the truth will shine forth.
1:122
For it is through human beings that most benefits are supplied by God.
1:123
Now all of us who make use of our eyes behold what falls before them, yet different people for different purposes.
1:124
譬如,屠夫與牧人看待羊的眼光便不相同;
For instance, the butcher and the shepherd do not view the sheep in the same way;
1:125
the one is concerned whether it is fat, while the other watches over its good breeding.
1:126
Of the sheep's milk, let one man milk it, if he needs nourishment; let another shear its fleece, if he needs covering.
1:127
So too, in my case, let the fruit of Greek useful learning likewise come forward.
1:128
For I do not think that any piece of writing should be deemed so fortunate that no one will speak against it; rather, that must be considered reasonable against which no one will reasonably speak.
1:129
And so too, one must accept not the conduct or the choice that is absolutely blameless, but that which no one will reasonably find fault with.
1:130
It does not immediately follow that, if someone does not act primarily out of principle, he is acting merely according to circumstance; rather, he will act while administering something in divine wisdom and accommodating himself to the occasion.
1:131
For neither does the one who possesses virtue still need the road leading to virtue, nor does the one who is in health still need recovery.
1:132
With the wholesome water of the sayings current among the Greeks, we irrigate beforehand the earthy part of their souls, so that they may receive the spiritual seed that is sown, and be able easily to bring it to full growth.
1:133
The Stromateis will contain the truth intermingled with the doctrines of philosophy — or rather, veiled and concealed by them — just as the edible kernel of a nut is hidden by its shell.
1:134
For it is fitting, I think, that the seeds of truth be kept only for the husbandmen of faith.
1:135
Nor has it escaped me that some ignorant and fainthearted persons keep repeating that we ought to occupy ourselves with the most essential matters that hold the faith together, and pass over what is external and superfluous, since it vainly wears us out and detains us with things that contribute nothing toward the true end.
1:136
And there are still others who suppose that philosophy has even crept into human life for evil, to the ruin of mankind, invented by some malicious discoverer.
1:137
But I shall show, throughout the whole of the Stromateis, that evil possesses an evil nature and could never in any way become the cultivator of anything good, hinting withal that philosophy too is, in some sense, a work of divine providence.
1:138
Concerning the memoranda which, at the necessary points, include Greek opinion, I say this much to those who are fond of finding fault:
1:139
First, even if philosophy were useless, if the establishing of its uselessness were itself useful, then it is useful for that very purpose.
1:140
Next, it is not possible to pass condemnatory judgment upon the Greeks merely by employing a bare statement of the doctrines they have set forth, without also entering along with them into a detailed disclosure of those doctrines, carried through to the point of a fair verdict.
1:141
For very trustworthy indeed is the proof that comes with experience, since the knowledge of things condemned is found to be the most perfect demonstration.
1:142
Many things, even those not contributing to the end in view, nonetheless adorn the craftsman; and besides, wide learning tends to commend the one who sets forth the most authoritative of the doctrines, for the persuasion of the hearers, engendering wonder in the catechumens, and establishes them in the truth.
1:143
Trustworthy is such a leading of the soul, through which those who love learning receive the truth in veiled form, so that they may not seem themselves to be maintaining that philosophy corrupts life, as though it were a creator of false matters and base deeds (as some have slandered it), it being a clear image of truth, a divine gift given to the Greeks; nor that we be dragged away from the faith, as though bewitched by some deceptive art, but rather, so to speak, by employing a fuller array, in some way procure a kind of demonstrative training in support of faith.
1:144
Yes indeed, also the connection of the doctrines through comparison betroths one to the truth, through which knowledge has followed—philosophy having come in not as the leading cause, but for the sake of the fruit that comes from knowledge.
1:145
...as we receive firm conviction of true apprehension through the science of the things that are hinted at.
1:146
For I pass over in silence the fact that the Stromateis, taking bodily form through their wide learning, wish skillfully to hide the seeds of knowledge.
1:147
Just as the lover of the hunt, having sought, searched, tracked, and coursed with the hounds, takes the beast, so too the truth appears sweet when it has been sought and procured through toil.
1:148
Why then did it seem good to arrange the Memoirs in this way? Because there is great danger in divulging the truly ineffable word of philosophy in its reality to those who unsparingly wish to contradict everything without justice, and who cast away all names and words in no orderly fashion whatsoever, both deceiving themselves and bewitching those who cling to them.
1:149
For the Jews require signs, as the apostle says, but the Greeks seek wisdom.
1:150
And great is such a crowd.
1:151
Hunters, zealots of petty crafts, wranglers and thong-twisters, as that man of Abdera says:
1:152
'For the tongue of mortals,' he says, 'is pliant:'
1:153
'and there is a wide pasture of words of every kind, this way and that.'
1:154
'Whatever word you speak, such a one you will hear in return.'
1:155
Puffed up, then, by this art, the ill-starred sophists, prattling on with their own jugglery, laboring their whole life over the distinction of names and a certain composition and interweaving of phrases, are shown to be more talkative than turtledoves.
1:156
Scratching and tickling, in no manly way as it seems to me, the ears of those who long to be scratched—simply a river of words, but a mere trickle of sense.
1:157
Indeed, just as with old sandals, the rest of them grows weak and falls apart, but only the 'tongue' [the strap] is left remaining.
1:158
Right well does the Athenian aim his shaft, and Solon writes:
1:159
'For you look to the tongue and the words of a wheedling man;'
1:160
'but each one of you walks in the tracks of a fox, while in all of you together there dwells an empty mind.'
1:161
This, I suppose, is hinted at by that saving utterance:
1:162
'Foxes have holes, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.'
1:163
For, I think, it is only on the believer—wholly set apart from the other beasts spoken of by Scripture—that the head of all things reposes: the good and gentle Word, who catches the wise in their craftiness.
1:164
For the Lord alone knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are vain—Scripture calling 'wise,' I suppose, the sophists who are excessive about words and arts.
1:165
Whence the Greeks themselves too have called those who are meddlesome about anything whatsoever both 'wise' and, by a related name, 'sophists.'
1:166
Cratinus, at any rate, in his Archilochi, having enumerated the poets, said:
1:167
'What a swarm of sophists you have raked up!'
1:168
And likewise Iophon, the comic poet, in his Flute-Singing Satyrs, speaking of rhapsodes and certain others, says:
1:169
'For indeed there has come in a crowd of many sophists, fully equipped.'
1:170
Concerning these and those like them, as many as have practiced empty words, the divine Scripture speaks most excellently:
1:171
'I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the understanding of the prudent I will set at naught.'
1:172
And Homer calls even a carpenter 'wise'; and concerning Margites, if indeed it is his work, he writes somewhat as follows:
1:173
'The gods made him neither a digger nor a plowman, nor wise in anything else; he failed in every art.'
1:174
For Hesiod, having said that the lyre-player Linus was skilled in every kind of wisdom, does not hesitate to call the sailor too 'wise'—even while writing of one not at all skilled in seamanship.
1:175
Daniel the prophet says that the mystery which the king asks about is not within the power of the wise, the magicians, the enchanters, or the Chaldean soothsayers to declare to the king; but there is a God in heaven who reveals it.
1:176
And indeed he addresses them as the wise men of Babylon.
1:177
That Scripture calls by the same name 'wisdom' every worldly science or art—and there are many devised by composite human reasoning—and that skillful and wise invention is from God, will become clear once we set forth this passage:
1:178
'And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:'
1:179
'Behold, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with a divine spirit of wisdom and understanding and knowledge in every work, to devise and to be a master builder,'
1:180
'to work gold and silver and bronze, and blue and purple and scarlet thread, and stone-cutting work and carpentry in wood, to work in all manner of works.'
1:181
Then he adds indeed a general statement:
1:182
'And to everyone wise in heart I have given understanding'—that is, to the one able to receive it through toil and practice.
1:183
And again, expressly, it is written in the name of the Lord:
1:184
'And you shall speak to all who are wise in mind, whom I have filled with a spirit of understanding.'
1:185
Those who are wise in mind do have a certain characteristic proper to their own nature, but they receive a twofold spirit of understanding from the most sovereign wisdom, ... having presented themselves as fit for it.
