1:1696
And what need is there to speak also of the descent of the Holy Spirit that took place upon the apostles, but also upon Cornelius and upon all the faithful, concerning whom the Apostle writes:
1:1697
For to one is given the word of wisdom, to another prophecy, to another kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues, to another gifts of healings, to another the word of knowledge, to another faith, to another workings of powers, to another discernment of spirits; and all these, he said, the one and the same Spirit works, distributing to each one individually as he wills. Glory to God, who through all the prophets foretold these things, unto the ages.
1:1698
This is Obadiah, the fifth, he says, he too having been deemed worthy to foretell beforehand concerning the mystery pertaining to Christ, thus:
1:1699
因為耶和華的日子臨近萬國。此言按其表面意思,乃指西古提人,即歌革和瑪各;但更確切地說,應驗於主基督;
For the day of the Lord is near upon all the nations. This is said, in its obvious sense, concerning the Scythians, that is, Gog and Magog, but more properly it applies to the Lord Christ;
1:1700
But on Mount Zion shall be salvation. Note. This one again openly proclaims that the saving day of the Lord is near in Zion, and upon all the nations.
1:1701
Glory to God unto the ages.
1:1702
此乃約拿,第六位,他不是藉言語,而是藉行為與預表,預先宣示了基督的復活;
This is Jonah, the sixth, who not through words, but by deed and by type foretold beforehand the resurrection of Christ;
1:1703
As Jonah remained in the belly of the sea-monster three days and three nights, so shall the Son of man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. For as the sea-monster vomited out Jonah uncorrupted, so also the tomb vomited out the Lord Christ into a better life.
1:1704
Note. This one too, as in a type, foretold beforehand through deeds the tomb and the paradoxical resurrection and incorruption of our Lord Christ, through whom also the resurrection and recapitulation of all men is brought about.
1:1705
Glory to God who does these things.
1:1706
This is Nahum, the seventh, he too was deemed worthy to foretell beforehand concerning the resurrection of the Lord Christ, and he says:
1:1707
猶大啊,你當守你的節期,向耶和華還你的願,因為他們必不再從你中間經過,使你衰朽;
Keep your feasts, O Judah; pay to the Lord your vows; for they shall no more pass through you unto decay;
1:1708
He has gone up, breathing upon your face, delivering you from affliction. Note. How this one too, in agreement with the others, exhorts to rejoice concerning the resurrection of Christ and our own, signifying beforehand our not-growing-old, that is, incorruption and immortality.
1:1709
This is Habakkuk, the eighth, he too having been deemed worthy to speak concerning the resurrection of Christ, thus:
1:1710
Behold, you despisers, and look and wonder and vanish away; for I work a work in your days which you will not believe, though one tell it to you. This citation Paul fittingly applied to the resurrection of the Lord Christ in Antioch of Pisidia.
1:1711
Note. Likewise this one also promises to signify beforehand things paradoxical and unbelievable to men, especially to despisers—evidently concerning the resurrection.
1:1712
This is Zephaniah, the ninth, he too having been deemed worthy to prophesy concerning the Lord Christ, and he speaks thus:
1:1713
The Lord will appear against them, and will utterly destroy all the gods of the nations of the earth; and all the isles of the nations shall worship him, each from its own place. Again he says:
1:1714
因為我要按其本代使言語轉臨萬民之上,使他們都呼求耶和華的名,同負一軛事奉他;
For I will turn upon the peoples a tongue according to its own generation, that all may call upon the name of the Lord, to serve him under one yoke;
1:1715
from beyond the rivers of Ethiopia they shall bring me sacrifices. And again he says:
1:1716
錫安的女子啊,應當大大歡樂;耶路撒冷的女子啊,應當歡欣快樂;
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; be glad and delight yourself, O daughter of Jerusalem;
1:1717
耶和華已經除去你的罪孽,救贖你脫離仇敵的手;
The Lord has taken away your iniquities, you have been redeemed from the hand of your enemies;
1:1718
He is in your midst, you shall no longer see evils. All these things apply more properly to the Lord Christ.
1:1719
Note. This one too clearly signifies the appearing of the Lord, and the abolition of the idols, and the turning of the nations to God through Christ.
1:1720
This is Haggai, the tenth, he too was deemed worthy to foretell beforehand concerning the Lord Christ, as in the person of Zerubbabel speaking the things that apply to the Lord Christ, saying:
1:1721
And I will make you a seal, for I have chosen you, says the Lord Almighty—just as John the evangelist also says:
1:1722
For him the Father, even God, has sealed. This is the temple that was built by Zerubbabel after the return, concerning which Zechariah says:
1:1723
The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house, and his hands shall complete it—concerning which the Jews also said to the Lord:
1:1724
This temple was built in forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days? Note. This one too, in the person of Zerubbabel, foretells beforehand the things concerning the Lord Christ, through whom comes the salvation of all the nations.
1:1725
This is Zechariah, the eleventh, he too having been deemed worthy to foretell beforehand concerning the coming of Christ, speaking thus:
1:1726
錫安的女子啊,應當大大歡樂;
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion;
1:1727
耶路撒冷的女子啊,應當宣揚喜樂;
proclaim joy, O daughter of Jerusalem;
1:1728
behold, your king comes to you, just and saving, himself gentle and mounted upon a beast of burden and a young colt. Hyperbolically he spoke this citation with reference to Zerubbabel, but it had its proper fulfilment in the Lord Christ.
1:1729
What are these wounds between your hands? And he will say:
1:1730
These with which I was wounded in the house of my beloved ones. And a little further again:
1:1731
I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered. Of this citation the Lord also made mention at the time of the passion, when he was about to be handed over, saying that it had been spoken concerning himself.
1:1732
Note. This one too says nothing strange, holding to the same things as the others, foretelling beforehand the coming of the Lord Christ, who in himself showed also the beginning of the second state.
1:1733
Glory to the God of all, unto the ages.
1:1734
此乃瑪拉基,第十二位,他也蒙恩得以預言有關主基督之經綸的事;
This is Malachi, the twelfth, he too having been deemed worthy to prophesy concerning the things pertaining to the economy of the Lord Christ;
1:1735
and he too speaks thus:
1:1736
For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name is glorified among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure sacrifice; for my name is great among the nations, says the Lord Almighty. And again he says:
1:1737
Behold, I will send forth my messenger, and he will survey the way before your face. This citation the Lord applied both to himself and to John the Baptist.
1:1738
The same prophet says further:
1:1739
但向你們敬畏我名的人,必有公義的日頭出現,其翅膀有醫治之能;
And unto you who fear my name shall the sun of righteousness arise, with healing in its wings;
1:1740
你們必出來跳躍,如同從圈中被釋放的牛犢;你們必踐踏惡人,因為在我所定的那日,他們必成為你們腳下的灰燼,這是全能的主說的;
and you shall go forth and leap like calves released from bonds, and you shall trample down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under your feet on the day that I make, says the Lord Almighty;
1:1741
and behold, I will send you Elijah the Tishbite before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes, just as the Lord said to the Jews:
1:1742
If you are willing to accept it, concerning John the Baptist, he is Elijah who is to come. Henceforth, having with God's help completed the twelve, we shall proceed to the four great ones.
1:1743
Note. But this one too foretold beforehand things not strange but similar to the other eleven, the things that would come to pass through Christ; and again the great and glorious day of the Lord, on which, he says, still-living Elijah the Tishbite will also be sent before.
1:1744
Glory to God who created all things and again re-creates them.
1:1745
How also they would be led captive to Babylon by Nebuchadnezzar and would again return in glory; and how they would again suffer evils at the hands of Antiochus and the surrounding nations, and how they would prevail over these by divine power; and how then the one expected from the seed of Abraham would come for the salvation of the whole world, according to the promises given from of old.
1:1746
This is the work of the prophets.
1:1747
Now some of them wrote their own books for themselves, as David, having composed the book of Psalms, and Daniel, who in the captivity was commanded to write what was revealed to him through visions, or certain others also.
1:1748
But the rest did not write for themselves, but there were scribes in the temple who wrote down, as in a daily record, the word of each prophet.
1:1749
每當一位先知奉神差遣去宣講,或論及耶路撒冷將要被擄,或論及撒瑪利亞,或論及其他地方,或論及歸回,或論及安條克,或論及周圍列國,或論及主基督自己,就在他預言的當日,他們便將該先知就一件事所宣講的話,記入那位先知的話語之中;
And whenever a prophet was sent by God to proclaim either concerning Jerusalem, that it was about to be led captive, or concerning Samaria, or concerning other places, or concerning the return, or concerning Antiochus, or concerning the surrounding nations, or concerning the Lord Christ himself, on the very day on which he prophesied, they would write down, in the discourse of that prophet, what he proclaimed concerning one matter;
1:1750
And again after a time, if he proclaimed concerning another matter, they would again write it, appending it to his discourse, making what he proclaimed the beginning of a chapter, and thus they compiled the whole of his book.
1:1751
Whence it is possible to find in their books a chapter fitting the captivity of Babylon, or the return, and immediately another concerning Christ, and again once more speaking of the captivity and the return; and, simply put, unless one reads with careful attention, he will find most things confused.
1:1752
Not only that, but also the Books of Kingdoms were written in this manner part by part in the temple: in the time of Saul, the things up to Saul; in the time of David, the things up to David; likewise the affairs of each king were written in his own time.
1:1753
Likewise they also wrote in the archives of the kings, which we call the Chronicles (Paralipomena).
1:1754
But the Pentateuch Moses wrote, a history of things that had happened before, things happening, and things that would happen.
1:1755
約書亞則寫了他自己的書;
Joshua again wrote his own book;
1:1756
《士師記》則又是在聖殿中,即在會幕中〔所寫〕;
the Judges again in the temple, that is, in the tabernacle;
1:1757
所羅門則寫了他自己的作品,包括《箴言》、《雅歌》與《傳道書》;
Solomon again wrote his own works, both the Proverbs and the Songs and Ecclesiastes;
1:1758
for having received the grace of wisdom from God, and admonishing every man to conduct himself wisely in this life, he had not received the grace of prophecy.
1:1759
As many, then, as we found to have been deemed worthy to speak prophecy concerning the Lord Christ, we have set in order.
1:1760
We further write also concerning the other four prophets, whatever they were deemed worthy to foretell concerning the dispensation according to the Lord Christ, unto which the whole aim of divine Scripture looks.
1:1761
We bring forward, then, first the most loud-voiced Isaiah, who was deemed worthy both by type and by word to see and to foretell concerning the mystery according to Christ.
1:1762
ISAIAH. This is the great Isaiah, the son of Amos, who by type foresaw the things concerning the mystery of Christ, when he saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and Seraphim stood round about him, six wings to the one and six wings to the other, covering themselves, and they cried one to another:
1:1763
'Holy, holy, holy, Lord Sabaoth, the whole earth is full of his glory.' Thereupon one of the Seraphim was sent, and took with tongs a coal from the altar and touched his lips, saying:
1:1764
'This will take away your iniquities' — clearly, having been taught through the vision that was shown, and the hymn, and the type, to foretell the mystery according to Christ.
1:1765
And yet again also by word he speaks thus:
1:1766
'He was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearer is silent.' This passage the Ethiopian eunuch, having read it, begged Philip to interpret it for him, who most swiftly interpreted to him that it had been spoken by the prophet concerning the Lord Christ.
1:1767
A man in suffering, and knowing how to bear sickness.
1:1768
因為祂未曾行不法之事,祂口中也未見詭詐;
For he committed no iniquity, nor was deceit found in his mouth;
1:1769
and to show him light. And again:
1:1770
'Behold, I will lay in the foundations of Zion a costly stone, a chief cornerstone, precious, for her foundations, and he who believes on him shall by no means be put to shame.' And again:
1:1771
'There shall be in that day the root of Jesse, and he who rises up to rule the nations; on him shall the nations hope.' And again:
1:1772
'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me.' Having read this in the synagogue on the Sabbath, the Lord said:
1:1773
'Amen I say to you, today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ears.' Marginal note. And this most loud-voiced Isaiah, both through words and through visions, foretold to men both the confession of the Holy Trinity, that is, of the one God, and the resurrection of human nature, which things the Church of God now also proclaims.
1:1774
Glory to him who always wisely administers the human race.
1:1775
This Jeremiah, having also himself been deemed worthy to foretell concerning the mystery according to Christ, speaks thus:
1:1776
'And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the sons of Israel did value, and gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.' This passage the evangelist Matthew also mentions, as fulfilled at the time of the passion.
1:1777
Again the same prophet says:
1:1778
'Behold, the days come, says the Lord, and I will make with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah a new covenant, not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers, in the day when I took hold of their hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt;'
1:1779
'because they did not abide in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord;'
1:1780
'for this is my covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: giving my laws into their mind, and I will write them upon their heart, and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people.'
1:1781
'And they shall by no means teach each one his brother, and each one his neighbor, saying:'
1:1782
'for all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them; for I will be merciful to their unrighteousnesses, and their sins I will remember no more.'
1:1783
這段引文,使徒在《希伯來書》中也曾提及。旁註。這位先知同樣預言了論及主基督之事,基督乃是第二境況的創始者;
And this passage the Apostle also mentions in the Epistle to the Hebrews. Marginal note. And this one likewise foretells the things concerning the Lord Christ, who is the founder of the second state;
1:1784
for more clearly he foretells both a first and a second state, which second state took its beginning in the Lord Christ.
1:1785
Glory to God unto the ages.
1:1786
EZEKIEL. This Ezekiel, prophesying in Babylon, was also himself deemed worthy to foretell concerning the dispensation according to Christ, and he says:
1:1787
'And I will deliver them from all their iniquities, and I will cleanse them;'
1:1788
'and they shall be to me a people, and I will be to them a God;'
1:1789
'and my servant David shall be ruler in their midst, and there shall be one shepherd of them all, for they shall walk in my commandments.' And again he says:
1:1790
'This water that goes forth toward Galilee, toward the east, and went down into Arabia, and came as far as the sea, unto the water of the outlet, shall heal the waters; and every living soul of the creatures that swarm shall live, and everything to which the river shall come, there it shall live.' Marginal note. And this one likewise hints at things similar to the others, foretelling the founder and the polity of our second state.
1:1791
Glory to God, who wisely administers all things.
1:1792
DANIEL. This Daniel, prophesying in Babylon, was also himself deemed worthy to foretell concerning the Lord Christ, and he speaks thus:
1:1793
'From the going forth of the word to answer you and to build Jerusalem, unto an anointed leader, shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks,' and the rest.
1:1794
'And a stone was cut out without hands, and it struck the image, and the stone became like a great mountain and filled the whole earth.' And again:
1:1795
'And behold, with the clouds of heaven one like a Son of man came, and reached unto the Ancient of Days;'
1:1796
'and to him was given honor and authority,' and the rest of what was said.
1:1797
having signified both the time and the authority belonging to him and the birth from a virgin and the spreading of the teaching in all the earth, which things, by God's help, have all come to pass and shall yet come to pass.
1:1798
Glory to God, who through all the prophets foretold these things.
1:1799
Anna the prophetess, giving thanks to God.
1:1800
(1) 'Now you release your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all peoples: a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.'
1:1801
(1) 'For behold, from now on all generations shall call me blessed.'
1:1802
(1) 'The law and the prophets were until John' — they proclaimed beforehand.
1:1803
(1) 'Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.'
1:1804
(1) 'And you, child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High.'
1:1805
(1) 'And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?' This is John the Baptist, greater than all men, who while still in the womb was filled with the Holy Spirit and leaped and hastened to run before his Lord; the great one before God; the forerunner of the Lord; he who prepares for him a people made ready; who is higher than the prophets and earlier than the apostles; who stands between the Old and New Testaments; the last under the law and the receiver of the New; who points out to all the Lord Christ present; who surpasses all men in austerity and exceeds all men in ministry; who came forth in the spirit and power of Elijah, and surpasses Elijah in that he baptized the Lord; the lamp that burns before the sun of righteousness.
1:1806
This one points out the Lord present, saying:
1:1807
'Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world' — calling him a lamb as one being sacrificed, and one taking away the sin of the world as one delivering the world from sin, rendering it, through the resurrection, incorruptible and immortal and unchangeable.
1:1808
Of such ministry and of such matters the great John was deemed worthy to be the herald.
1:1809
Marginal note. This John, greater than all men, who had a father and a mother who were fellow-prophets, who not only points out the Lord Christ present as the founder of the second state, but also indicates him as judge of all, saying:
1:1810
'Whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and gather the wheat into the storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.' This one again proclaims beforehand the kingdom of heaven and prepares the way for him who comes after him and who shows in himself, by his work, the kingdom of heaven, which is the second and new state.
1:1811
Glory to God, who brought all things from non-being into being, and who again creates anew in Christ.
1:1812
Prologue concerning the apostles. Just as, then, we promised to show the ancient men, and all the prophets, having spoken beforehand concerning the mystery according to Christ, and that all of them, from the first-formed Adam until John the Baptist, look toward the coming state, this we have done — that very thing which the Lord Christ himself and his disciples and apostles thereafter also proclaimed plainly: that there is a certain coming state, much better than the one here, which the Lord Christ first showed us in himself, having risen from the dead and ascended into heaven; which state the first prophets also indicated somewhat obscurely, and those after them proclaim clearly; and that none of them, whether of the more recent or of the ancient, ever proclaimed or imagined any other state, either earlier or later than these two, but that God, having begun to make all creation, made only these two states, having ordained that this one should be governed first, and then thus the coming one, toward which the whole aim of God and of his prophets looks.
1:1813
...proclaiming it and rejecting the resurrection of bodies.
1:1814
Let them also be ashamed, the followers of these, who seem to Christianize but in deed think the things of the Greeks, who say that heaven is spherical in shape.
1:1815
For they themselves say nothing other than what the Greeks proclaim: that the world is always thus in the corruption of bodies, and that there is never any resurrection of bodies, nor any other state.
1:1816
Let the Manichaeans and Marcionites be ashamed, who cast off the flesh and proclaim it to be the workmanship of an evil principle.
1:1817
Let all be ashamed who set aside our flesh, and all who set aside our souls together with their mind — that is, Eutyches, Arius, Apollinarius, and all those like them.
1:1818
Let all the heretics be ashamed who do not confess one God, known and worshiped in three hypostases, existing as maker of heaven and earth, and the resurrection of our flesh.
1:1819
Let the Samaritans be ashamed, who confess neither the resurrection of our flesh, nor angel, nor spirit.
1:1820
Let the unbelieving among the Jews be ashamed, who did not receive the one who was expected, and who confess not the Christian resurrection, but such a one as we now live in, marrying and being given in marriage.
1:1821
Well done indeed, well done! Joy and exultation to those who are truly Christians, who obey all the divine Scripture, both Old and New Testament, who have been guided by the law and have believed in Christ and in all that he preached and still says:
1:1822
The law and the prophets prophesied until John, and:
1:1823
From the days of John the Baptist the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force, as if to say that:
1:1824
As many as do violence to themselves and live righteously and do not follow their own notions, but believe in God, those obtain it.
1:1825
Indeed, when the mother of John and James asked the Lord that one might sit on his right hand and one on his left in the kingdom, he answered her:
1:1826
This is not mine to give, but, he says, it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father; as if to say:
1:1827
The gift of God is spread out equally to all — to rise from the dead and become incorruptible, immortal, and unchangeable; but to be honored above others is not this gift, but a preparation of God for those who believe rightly and live well.
1:1828
For again the Lord says:
1:1829
Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you; and as to when it was prepared, he says beforehand, from the foundation of the world.
1:1830
Now Moses the cosmographer, and all the rest of the prophets and men of old, spoke of these two states only and made mention of no others, but proclaimed and wrote of these alone; and not only they, but also the Lord who came, and his disciples, the evangelists and apostles, preached nothing other than these two states alone.
1:1831
What ground for faith is still lacking, that these things are not true? Who will not be put to shame by the multitude of predictions, the outcomes of the prophecies, the multitude of signs and wonders and miracles, the very way of life of all the saints and of the Lord Christ and his apostles, the harmony of the Old and New Testament? Who among them disagreed with the others by explaining the heaven to be spherical, or proclaimed a pre-existence of this world, or declared the world to be eternal, or set aside the resurrection of our bodies, or the dispensation brought about through Christ for righteous men to ascend into heaven? But all of them, as guided by one divine Spirit, foretold the same things both through words and through deeds or types, and all of them look toward the state that is to come.
1:1832
And the Lord Christ himself makes clear in the Gospels the places in which the perfectly righteous, and the middling, and the impious are to dwell:
1:1833
concerning the perfectly righteous, as when he calls them to himself, saying:
1:1834
...of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; and concerning the impious, as when he says to those on the left:
1:1835
Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels; as if to say:
1:1836
To the righteous, above, in heaven, within this visible firmament; but to the impious, below, around the earth, where the devil also was cast down.
1:1837
It remains, then, necessary to seek the place of those who are in between.
1:1838
He says, then, in the parable of the ten virgins, that the five wise ones entered with the bridegroom into the bridal chamber, that is, into heaven, since they had chosen both virginity and almsgiving:
1:1839
but the foolish ones, he says, having chosen the one and despised the other, remained outside the bridal chamber, finding the door shut, and hearing:
1:1840
Depart from me, I do not know you — neither having been permitted to enter, nor condemned together with the impious, but remaining outside the bridal chamber.
1:1841
Thus, then, each one who has right, unfeigned faith and a good life enters into the kingdom with boldness:
1:1842
but those on the contrary, who have neither of these — neither right faith nor an upright life — are condemned along with the devil around the earth:
1:1843
but those who have one but not the other are certain middling ones, condemned to remain outside the bridal chamber, that is, outside the firmament.
1:1844
But it is impossible for us to know the form of the good things or of the punishments, unless we come to be within those very realities:
1:1845
but only by way of example, from the punishments here and the good things here, did he signify the things to come:
1:1846
for it was not possible for us to hear it otherwise, not yet having received experience of certain new things; but as far as it was possible to speak in riddles, he said:
1:1847
The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man, a king, who made a marriage feast for his son — choosing that which is above all the good things of this life and likening it to the good things there:
1:1848
and likewise the worst things — fire, the worm, Tartarus, and the gnashing of teeth, and darkness, and whatever is similar to these — since these happen to be more terrible than the punishments here, he likened those future punishments to these.
1:1849
but it is not possible to reckon fully either the good things there, or the terrible things, or those between these.
1:1850
But there is another state which is altogether much, exceedingly much, better than the things here — just as this present life is better than when we were in the womb of our mother.
1:1851
For we must consider how we were living inside the womb — in darkness, in blood, in phlegm, in bile, in mire, in filth, mingled with all uncleanness and foul odor, and existing in complete ignorance; but having peered out into this life, we behold certain other things of which we had not yet had experience — the expanse of open space, the breathing of air, the enjoyment of most beautiful light, the fabric of a world crafted by a skillful and all-wise maker, and being filled with the knowledge of God — all of which it was not possible for us either to know, or to conceive, or to hear of, or to enjoy even one of them, while we were still in the womb.
1:1852
So likewise, we cannot fully reckon, or conceive, or imagine the state that is to come — which is altogether better than the things here — while we are still in this life, unless we come to be within those very realities.
1:1853
For what eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered into the heart of man, he says, are the things which God has prepared for those who love him. Just as, then, here God has granted as a common gift to all, making his sun rise on the just and the unjust, and sending rain on the good and the wicked, so also in the state to come he grants a common gift to all — immortality and incorruptibility and life and unchangeableness:
1:1854
but according to his former deeds each one draws upon himself either the kingdom or the punishment, either ascent into heaven, or an abode around the earth, or the middle rank.
