改變而成的,乃是藉著取了一個被具理性、具靈智之魂所賦予生命的肉身;他仍是原來所是的——完全的神——同時又成了原來所不是的——完全的人;他所取的是本性,並非位格;這本性並非無位格的,而是在他裡面得以立存,並以他為其位格;
alteration, but by the assumption of flesh animated by a rational and intellective soul, remaining what he was — perfect God — and becoming what he was not — perfect man — having assumed a nature, not a hypostasis; a nature not without hypostasis, but one that subsisted in him and had him as its hypostasis;
1:205
for it did not become the property of this man or that man, but of God the Word.
1:206
因為凡肉身、凡靈魂,都被稱為屬於某人,也的確屬於某人,並以那人為自己的位格;
For every flesh and every soul is said to belong to someone, and does belong to someone, and has that one as its hypostasis;
1:207
for the flesh and soul of Peter have Peter as their hypostasis, and the soul of Peter does not have one hypostasis while his flesh has another.
1:208
For the soul has one nature, and the flesh another — the soul an incorporeal and immaterial one, the body a material one — but since they belong to one person, they have one hypostasis.
1:209
Whose, then, is the ensouled flesh that came from the Virgin? If it is God the Word's, then it has him as its hypostasis.
1:210
但若它屬於他以外的另一位,那麼便不應向它敬拜,也不應向它崇拜;
But if it belongs to someone other than him, it ought not to be worshipped or adored;
1:211
For we do not render worship to a creature, nor to anyone else besides the Holy Trinity.
1:212
For it was not an angel, nor an envoy, but the Lord himself who came and saved us.
1:213
第一個亞當是屬地的,出於塵土;
And the first Adam was of the earth, earthy;
1:214
the second Adam, the Lord, is from heaven. It is called a Trinity, because there are three hypostases of the Godhead: the Father, the only-begotten Son, and the Holy Spirit.
1:215
If, then, the hypostasis of the only-begotten Son of God is one, and the hypostasis of the son of the Virgin is another, then either the only-begotten Son of God has been cast out and the son of the Virgin brought in his place, or the son of the Virgin is not worshiped, or four sit upon the throne and we worship a Quaternity.
1:216
But may it never be that we worship a Quaternity, but rather the Holy and adorable Trinity: one Father, one hypostasis; one Son and Word of God incarnate, one hypostasis together with his flesh; one Holy Spirit, one hypostasis; an all-holy and glorified Trinity.
1:217
That Christ's hypostasis is one, we shall know from what follows.
1:218
The beginning of the existence and hypostasis of every infant is the seed deposited by the father in the womb of the woman; the woman, conceiving this, supplies her own blood, and thus the infant is formed.
1:219
The hypostasis of the seed and of the blood from the mother that is constituted into flesh within it is one, and this is the conception of the seed.
1:220
The woman conceives, from union with the man, the seed deposited by him, and this is the hypostasis of the infant.
1:221
那麼,聖童貞女懷受了什麼?肉身嗎?但如此一來,這肉身便不是出於她的了;
What, then, did the holy Virgin conceive? Flesh? But then the flesh would not be from her;
1:222
for a woman does not conceive from herself alone.
1:223
What, then, did she conceive? The Word of God? For the Holy Spirit mediated in place of union, and dwelt in her, and the Son and Word of God was conceived; and he himself became flesh, ensouled with a rational and intellective soul, and he himself, as it were a divine seed, became the hypostasis for the flesh — one hypostasis of two natures, both divinity and humanity.
1:224
因為他本是完全的神,卻成了完全的人,他是神與人的同一位子:作為神,他無母而出於父;作為人,他無父而出於母;同一位卻有兩個本性,一個位格;
For being perfect God, he became perfect man, and he is one Son of God and of man: motherless as God, from the Father; fatherless as man, from the mother — the same one, having two natures, one hypostasis;
1:225
for Christ is one Son, and not two.
1:226
但若是一位子,又怎能有兩個位格呢?因為位格使一者成為異於他者,並將此一者與彼一者區分開來;
But if he is one Son, how can there be two hypostases? For hypostasis makes one thing to be other, and distinguishes one from another;
1:227
for if two hypostases, twins born of one father and one mother, are not one son but two, how could a hypostasis begotten of a father of a different essence, and a hypostasis begotten of a mother of a different essence, be one son? For the Father and God is not of the same essence as the Virgin.
1:228
And if two hypostases of human beings, even being consubstantial, would not be one son, how could two hypostases of different essence be one son? It is necessary, then, either to say that Christ and the God-Word are two sons, or to confess one hypostasis and one Son.
1:229
How, moreover, do you say that Christ is of two natures, if Christ is one thing and the God-Word another?
1:230
For according to you, the God-Word will be of one nature and one hypostasis, and Christ will be of one nature and one hypostasis.
1:231
But if this be granted, then the Scriptures that proclaim the Word who was in the beginning will certainly all prove false —
1:232
宣告他既是神,也成了肉身;又如宣告獨一神即是父,也同樣宣告獨一主耶穌基督,即神自己所生的獨生子,是父為世界所賜下、且曾受苦的那一位;又宣告那按肉身出於以色列人的基督,是在萬有之上、直到永遠當受頌讚的神,是神的能力、神的智慧,是萬有的承業者、諸世代的創造者,是父榮耀的光輝、其位格的印記,是偉大的神,且雖本有神的形像,卻取了奴僕的形像──以及諸如此類的話語;
declaring that, being God, he also became flesh; and that, just as there is one God the Father, so too there is one Lord Jesus Christ, God's own and only-begotten Son, given by the Father for the world, and who suffered; and that the Christ who arose, according to the flesh, from the Israelites, is, over all, God blessed forever, and the power of God and the wisdom of God, and heir of all things, and maker of the ages, and the radiance of the Father's glory and the imprint of his hypostasis, and great God, and, being in the form of God, took the form of a servant — and other things akin to these;
1:233
for these things, and such as these, are said of one and the same Christ, and not of one person and another, nor of one hypostasis and another, that is, not of one Son and Christ and a different one.
1:234
And how, moreover, would Christ himself, our God, speak truly in declaring himself to be prior to Abraham, and older than the foundation of the world, and to have come down from heaven, and to be by nature light and life and resurrection, and crying out:
1:235
"I and the Father are one," and "he who has seen me has seen the Father," and other sayings like these — by which he is shown to be not a mere man, recently come into being, but God incarnate, and one Christ, Son of God, in two natures: I mean, in divinity, according to which he was known as one with the Father and God; and in humanity, according to which he is of a different essence from the Father, but of the same essence as us who are earthly, and in nothing at variance with us as regards nature — he is not one hypostasis and another, but one and the same hypostasis, bearing within itself, without confusion and without change, one nature and another: the one uncreated, pre-eternal, and creative of creatures; the other created and recent.
1:236
For humanity is not co-eternal, of the same form and same essence as divinity, nor has it come down from heaven; but since it was one and the same God the Word who united humanity to himself according to hypostasis, for this reason he spoke of himself sometimes in lofty terms befitting God, and sometimes in lowly terms befitting man.
1:237
Hence he also wished to be understood as both David's Lord and David's son, and he accepted as pious both those who called him Son of God and those who named him Son of David: the former, as signifying his invisible divinity and pre-eternal begetting from God the Father; the latter, as proclaiming the visible essence and true nature of his humanity.
1:238
If all these things are set aside, we shall be compelled to speak of two only-begotten sons: one of God the Father, and one of the Virgin mother.
1:239
And the only-begotten will no longer be called "only-begotten," since another has been brought in alongside him by adoption; and the one will be the elder, the other the younger; the one natural and legitimate, the other adopted and illegitimate.
1:240
Moreover, if we should dare to introduce a fourth hypostasis — the one born of the Virgin Mary — and worship it together with the tri-hypostatic Godhead, we shall be found worshiping a strange, new, and recent god, which is altogether forbidden to do; and, in pagan fashion, we shall be subjected to the charge of man-worship, and condemned by the curse pronounced upon worshipers of men;
1:241
for it is written: "Cursed is every man who places his hope in man."
1:242
But we neither impiously introduce another hypostasis alongside the three hypostases of the Godhead, which alone are to be worshiped and revered — since we have been taught by the divinely inspired oracles not to call the one Son and Christ two sons and two Christs — nor do we, in a manner hateful to God, tolerate worshiping a mere man; but we serve and worship the one composite Christ, of divinity and humanity, and perfect in both essences from which and in which he was composed, who is ever worshiped together with the Father and the all-holy Spirit, honoring his divinity and his humanity with a single act of worship, since these are united according to hypostasis inseparably and without any division, and constitute one person.
1:243
願我們絕不敬拜「四一」,而是敬拜聖三一;
May it never be that we worship a Quaternity, but rather the Holy Trinity;
1:244
one Father, one hypostasis; one Son and Word of God incarnate, one hypostasis together with his flesh; one Holy Spirit, one hypostasis; an all-holy and glorified Trinity.
1:245
For just as a sword that has been made fiery in the flame is still one sword even after the heating, so, and even more so, Christ is one, and one hypostasis, even after the incarnation.
1:246
And just as I fear to touch the fiery sword, not on account of the nature of the iron, but on account of the nature of the fire united to it, so I worship God the Word incarnate, and I worship together with him the flesh, not on account of the nature of the flesh, but on account of God the Word who has been united to it.
1:247
I worship the king together with his purple robe, and I honor the purple robe on account of the king.
1:248
And indeed, in the case of the king and his garment, the union is not according to hypostasis, nor unbreakable, nor everlasting; but in the case of Christ our God, the union is according to hypostasis, unbreakable, and everlasting.
1:249
Therefore, as to one of the Holy Trinity, I worship together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, Christ, the incarnate Son of God and God.
1:250
It has therefore been demonstrated that Christ is of two natures, and one hypostasis.
1:251
If, then, he has two natures, it is necessary to confess in him the natural properties of the two natures, perfectly and without deficiency, if indeed we know him to be perfect God and perfect man.
1:252
從其神聖、屬父的本性而言,他具有非受造性、無時間性、無始性;
From his divine and paternal nature he has the uncreated, the timeless, the beginningless;
1:253
因為他並非先前不存在,而後才開始存在,而是永恆常存,以生成之方式而為神:具有意願的能力、運作的能力、全能、力量無限、創造性、全然運作之能、無限性、不可限量性、不可理解性、不可探究性、不朽性、統轄萬有之能、維繫萬有之能、良善、智慧、公義、施行拯救之能、本性單純無合成、不可變易性、不可更改性、洞察一切之能、預知未來之事之能、含攝萬有或包容萬有之能、不可被分享其本質、卻可被分享其運作(而非本性)之特性;
for he did not first not exist and then begin to exist, but he was always, in the manner of begetting, being God: [having] the capacity of willing, the capacity of operating, almighty, infinitely powerful, creative, all-working, infinite, uncircumscribed, incomprehensible, unsearchable, immortal, all-ruling, sustaining, good, wise, just, saving, simple by nature and uncompounded, unchangeable, unalterable, all-seeing, foreknowing of things to come, all-containing or all-comprehending, unparticipated in essence yet participable in operation, not in nature;
1:254
self-determining and all-powerful, beneficent, communicative of good, illuminating, invisible, intangible, supra-divine, supra-essential; and, simply put, all that the Father has belongs also to the Son, except unbegottenness.
1:255
And a true witness to this is our Lord and God himself, who said:
1:256
"All that the Father has is mine." And to the Father himself he says:
1:257
"All that is mine is yours, and yours is mine." But what is proper to his hypostasis is that he is Son, begotten of the Father, and not that he is an unbegotten Father, nor a begetter.
1:258
For he was begotten of the Father impassibly, without conjugal union — that is, without mixture — as light from fire, or rather, as perfect light from perfect light.
1:259
From the Father, then, he has his being, and all that he has.
1:260
"My Father is greater than I"; for I am from him, even though not after him, and he is not from me.
1:261
Having spoken, then, of the properties of Christ's divine nature, which he had from the Father, let us also speak of the natural properties of his human nature, which he had from his assumption of that which is from us.
1:262
因為,倘若他本是完全的神,卻為了我們的緣故、按我們的樣式成了完全的人,那麼顯然,正如他擁有神性一切本性的屬性、並依此而為完全的神,他同樣也將擁有人性一切本性的屬性──亦即人性一切的本性能力,包括主動的與被動的能力──好使他成為完全的人;
For if, being perfect God, he became, for our sake and like us, perfect man, it is clear that, just as he has all the natural properties of divinity and, in this respect, is perfect God, so also he will have all the natural properties of humanity — that is, all the natural faculties of humanity, both active and passive — in order that he might be perfect man;
1:263
for if he did not assume something belonging to nature, he is not a perfect man, but a deficient one.
1:264
讓我們先確立一項前提:一切運作、使用、行動與受動的能力,我們都是依本性、從造物主那裡領受而來,而這些都是本性所有的;
Let it be established beforehand that we have received naturally from the Creator the capacity for every operation, use, action, and passive experience, and that these are natural;
1:265
for it is impossible for any nature whatsoever to make use of an action, or to perform an operation, or to undergo a passive experience, the capacity for which it did not receive according to nature.
1:266
For example, the earth cannot sprout unless it has received according to nature the sprouting capacity from the Creator; nor can water bring forth life — so to speak — the generation of fish, and contribute to the sprouting of the earth's produce, unless it received such a capacity from the Creator; nor can a plant grow, unless it received the growth-capacity; nor can a bird fly, unless it received the capacity for flying; nor can a land animal walk, nor a reptile crawl, unless each received such a capacity.
1:267
So too, man cannot see, or think, or will freely, or act, unless he has received the capacity for each of these naturally from the Creator.
1:268
Man, then, is a microcosm.
1:269
因為他兼具魂與體,居於靈智與物質之間;
For he has soul and body, and stands midway between intellect and matter;
1:270
for he is the bond of visible and invisible creation, that is, of sensible and intelligible creation.
1:271
For the intellect is the eye and the purest part of the soul.
1:272
He therefore shares with inanimate bodies in the mixture and composition from the four elements; with plants, in this as well as in the nutritive and growth-capacity, and further in the seed-producing capacity; with irrational animals, in these as well, but also in the vital faculty and in the irrational appetite — that is, anger and desire — and in the imaginative and memorative faculties, and in sensation and in locomotive movement (locomotive movement being the movement of the whole body), and in the vocal and respiratory faculties, and in movement from place to place.
1:273
而他又藉著理性的能力,以及靈智那理性的欲求──此欲求即是「意願」,乃靈智的最初運動──而與那些無形、屬靈智的能力相連;
And he is joined to the incorporeal and intellective powers through his rational faculty, and through the rational appetite of the intellect, which is willing — the first movement of the intellect;
1:274
for, by desiring, it is moved toward understanding, and by desiring it reasons, and by desiring it judges.
1:275
而這欲求是自主自決的;
And this appetite is self-determining;
1:276
for, desiring freely, it understands, reasons, and judges.
1:277
Proper to the body are: division, flux, and change in quality — that is, cooling, heating, moistening, and drying — and the organization of the members.
1:278
Proper to the rational soul, considered by itself alone, are: life, understanding, and the rational appetite, which is, properly speaking, willing.
1:279
And, prior to these, what is most proper to the soul, distinguishing it from the essence of the angels, is that it lives its life in a body and imparts to it life and movement, and that it freely, according to its own appetite (that is, willing), governs the body and the irrational appetite — desire and anger — and the movement that follows impulse, and naturally rules its own body as its own natural slave.
1:280
因此,人比天使更是按著形像(受造)的;
Therefore man is, more than the angels, according to the image;
1:281
For the angel has no natural slave, nor is he by nature a master.
1:282
靈魂與身體所共有的(是靈魂傳給身體的):生命機能、想像機能——即對可感之物有領受或辨識能力者——以及感覺機能本身,也就是五種感官;
Common to soul and body — of which the soul imparts to the body — are: the vital faculty, the imaginative faculty (that is, the faculty apprehensive or discriminative of sensible things), and the sensitive faculty itself, that is, the five senses;
1:283
sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch; further, the faculty of memory and motion according to impulse, the nutritive and growth faculties, and the irrational appetite — I mean anger and desire — hunger and thirst, weariness and spitting, pleasure and grief and displeasure, fear, timidity and anguish, distress, disturbance, sweat, and death (for death is the separation of the soul from the body), and the whole economy of nourishment and growth.
1:284
這一切都是非理性的情感(πάθη)與運作(ἐνέργειαι)——是本性的運作與能力(因此凡屬本性所有者,皆是神賜給本性的恩賜),但也是情感,因為凡受造之物皆是以能受動的方式被推動並運作;
All these are irrational affections and operations — operations and powers of the nature (wherefore all natural things are gifts bestowed by God upon the nature), yet affections, because every created creature is moved and operates in a passible manner;
1:285
only the divine nature is impassible, being moved impassibly and operating unmovedly.
1:286
再者,其中有些似乎較屬於運作,有些則較屬於情感;
Further, some of these seem rather to be operations, others affections;
1:287
for it is more fitting to call life rather an operation, but death, and cutting, and flux, an affection.
1:288
Now cutting, and flux, and the
1:289
依性質而生的變化——亦即變白、變黑、變冷、變熱、患病及類此諸事——這些都是情感;同樣地,肢體的組織構成,亦即其形成,也是如此;
change in respect of quality — that is, whitening, blackening, cooling, heating, sickness, and the like — these are affections; and likewise the organization of the members, that is, their formation;
1:290
for the nature operates in organizing and forming, while the body, being organized, is passive [undergoes it].
1:291
By nature I mean the law and power given from the beginning by the Creator to each species, according to which it is moved or is at rest.
1:292
它運動,是就其所具能力可行之運作而言——即思想、推理、意欲、感知,以及由此地移至彼地;
It is moved, indeed, with respect to those operations for which it has power — thinking, reasoning, willing, perceiving, changing from place to place;
1:293
for it has the power for these things from the Creator.
1:294
And it is at rest, unmoved, with respect to those things for which it received no power of operation, not being constituted therein.
1:295
Motions are: generation, corruption, alteration, increase, decrease, and motion in place.
1:296
而這(位移運動)有六種方式:向前、向後、向右、向左、向上、向下;
And this [motion in place] is sixfold: forward, backward, right, left, up, down;
1:297
而其餘一切前述諸事亦皆屬於運動;
and all the rest of the things mentioned are motions;
1:298
but intellection and rational appetite, and discursive reasoning, inquiry, consideration, deliberation, judgment, disposition, and choice, opinion, and the impulse toward use, are operations.
1:299
理智活動似乎較屬於運作,而欲求則較屬於情感;
Intellection seems rather to be an operation, but appetite an affection;
1:300
for everything that desires is thereby affected [undergoes something].
1:301
We call this rational appetite an operation, because it is self-determining, exercising authority over the irrational affections, judging and governing and reining them in — anger, desire, sensation, and motion according to impulse.
1:302
因為這些非理性的情感是順服並聽從理性的;
For these irrational affections are obedient and submissive to reason;
1:303
for it is natural for them to obey reason and be subject and to be moved as reason commands, in men who live according to nature.
1:304
然而這些情感也是構成動物性本質(生物性存有)的要素;
But these affections also constitute [are constitutive of] the animal substance;
1:305
for without them life cannot subsist.
1:306
These were given to man by the Creator for service: desire, toward God and the things He wills; anger, against the devil and sin, and for the strengthening of desire with courage.
1:307
The irrational appetite, then, is given for the constitution of the animal substance; but the rational and self-determining appetite is given so that it may, in self-determining fashion, rein in every natural motion, and be subject, and subject that motion, to the law of the Creator.
1:308
Intellection and appetite, then, are joined together in man, so that, being rational, we may not involuntarily undergo the affections of irrational creatures.
1:309
因為心智以自主之姿而欲求,便進行思想、考量、探究、商議、辨別,並依所判斷者而立定意向,繼而抉擇,並衝動趨向於行動——既是理性地、理智地,也是以欲求之方式;
For the mind, desiring in a self-determining way, thinks and considers and inquires and deliberates and discerns and is disposed toward what has been judged, and chooses, and is impelled toward the act — rationally, intellectually, and appetitively;
1:310
for by nature the rational rules over the irrational.
1:311
If, then, man was created as a rational being, king over all irrational creation, how shall he not be self-determining over the irrational affections within him? Being, then, appetitive, rational, and intellectual, he thinks and reasons appetitively, and desires rationally, intellectually, and self-determiningly.
1:312
Of the faculties common to soul and body, the vital faculty is rather an operation; and the imaginative, sensitive, and memorative faculties, and motion according to impulse, are passible operations or operative affections; but anger and desire, hunger and thirst, weariness, fear, timidity and anguish, pleasure, grief, spitting and sweat, the nutritive and growth faculties, and, above all, death, are affections.
1:313
All these are natural, and blameless, bestowed by the Creator upon the nature of men.
1:314
For He bestowed both existence itself and existence in this particular manner, and there is no human being who has ever been without a share in these.
1:315
擁有這些,彰顯出創造主的智慧與美善,但對我們而言,這既不算是德行,也不算是惡行;
The having of these things exhibits the Creator's wisdom and goodness, but it is reckoned to us as neither virtue nor vice;
1:316
for they are good, bestowed for a good purpose by the Good One, but the manner of their use constitutes virtue and vice.
1:317
For if the will is subjected to the law of God, and the mind governs, according to His law, the things obedient to it — I mean all the movements of the soul, and especially anger and desire, for these are obedient to reason — we have wrought virtue and fulfilled righteousness.
1:318
For it was to this end that we received authority over these things, and as
1:319
……領受了權柄,我們也就領受了律法,並且成為律法之下的人;
having received authority, we also received a law, and came to be under law;
1:320
for irrational creatures, not possessing mind as ruler, self-determining over anger and desire, did not receive a law.
1:321
因此,我們本性上原是創造主的奴僕,又擁有構成德行之要素的自主之權(因為出於強迫而行者,既非德行,也不蒙悅納)——我們領受了律法,為要使我們認識自己有一位主人,免得我們在黑暗中行走時,跌入坑中;
Being, then, by nature slaves of the Creator, and possessing self-determination, which constitutes virtue (for what is done by compulsion is neither virtue nor pleasing), we received a law, so that we might recognize that we have a Master — lest, walking in darkness, we should fall into pits;
1:322
「你的律法是我腳前的燈,是我路上的光」,先知大衛如此說;
for 'Your law is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my paths,' said David the prophet;
1:323
為要使我們對主人的渴慕與善意得以彰顯——並使我們得以與神一同分享這美善,好叫這美善屬於揀選它的人,不亞於屬於那賜下其種子者;
so that our longing and goodwill toward the Master might be made known — and so that we might share with God in the good, in order that the good might belong to the one who chose it no less than to the one who supplied its seeds;
1:324
for He Himself bestowed on us the power of doing good.
1:325
祂使我們成為自主的,好叫這美善既出於祂,也出於我們;
He made us self-determining, so that the good might come to be both from Him and from us;
1:326
for God cooperates unto good with everyone who chooses the good.
1:327
好叫我們在持守合乎本性之事的同時,得以獲致超越本性之事——即不朽壞與神化——這是藉著與神聖者的結合,透過意志盡其所能地肖似於祂而成就的;
so that, by keeping what is according to nature, we might attain what is above nature — incorruption and deification — through union with the divine, by likeness to it insofar as the will is able, through the will's capacity;
1:328
so that, by not using our natural powers irrationally, we might not be classed together with the senseless beasts and made like them.
1:329
因為,若我們的意願(θέλησις)不順服於神聖的意志(θέλημα),反倒是自主的心智依照自己的意念抉擇而使用怒氣與情慾,那便是造成了惡行;
For if our willing is not subjected to the divine will, but the self-determining mind uses anger and desire according to its own deliberate disposition and choice, it has wrought vice;
1:330
for vice is nothing other than sin, and failure, and disobedience to the Master's law.
1:331
So then, self-determination is the first good befitting the rational nature; and to use self-determination and to exercise mastery over and hold sway over the irrational affections — I mean anger and desire — is virtue; but to betray self-determination and be overcome by the irrational affections, and to live irrationally and bestially, this is vice, this is sin.
1:332
so that we might not disgrace ourselves by doing the things of irrational creatures, but might restrain by reason the impulses of nature.
1:333
For the manner of life of irrational creatures does not befit the rational being; rather, it befits him to use even the irrational affections rationally, and to regulate them by reason, and to lead and guide them with authority, and himself to be led and to yield to the divine law, and to use these affections as the Lord has ordained.
1:334
One must know, then, that the confusion of terms produces error for the heretics.
1:335
Just as, then, for the Monophysites — I mean the Acephali — saying that nature and hypostasis are the same thing became the cause of their saying that there is one nature in Christ, lest they should divide Christ into two hypostases; and further, for those of like mind with Nestorius, [it became the cause] of their saying there are two hypostases, lest they should confuse the two natures of Christ into one; so also for the Monothelites, not knowing the difference between the natural will and the hypostatic will — that is, the gnomic will — became the cause of their saying there is one will in Christ.
1:336
In order, then, that we may escape the error arising from equivocation, let us thus unfold the discussion concerning the will.
1:337
For at times it signifies the willing, that is, the faculty of willing; at other times, the thing willed itself, that which underlies the willing, that is, the very thing which someone wills.
1:338
意願是一回事,所意欲之物又是另一回事,正如視覺是一回事,可見之物又是另一回事;
Willing is one thing, and the thing willed another, just as sight is one thing and the visible another;
1:339
for sight is the very faculty of seeing by which we see, operating in the eye, while the visible is the very thing seen, whether a stone or a piece of wood or something of the sort.
1:340
So too, willing is the very faculty of the soul for willing, by which we will, while the thing willed is the very thing which someone wills.
1:341
例如,我意欲航行;那「航行」便是所意欲之物;
For example, I will to sail; to sail is the thing willed;
1:342
I will to marry; to marry is the thing willed.
1:343
And in every case the thing willed is either an operation, that is, an act, or an affection.
1:344
Let us see, then, whether willing is natural or hypostatic.
1:345
那麼,是不是每一個人都擁有意欲的能力呢?顯然,每個人都擁有「能夠意欲」的能力,每個人也都擁有「意欲」;
Does every man, then, possess the faculty of willing, or not? It is clear that every man possesses the ability to will, and every man possesses willing;
1:346
has there ever been anyone who willed nothing? But not every man wills the same thing; rather, one wills this, another that; nor does every man will in the same manner, but one wills well, another ill, each according to his own deliberate disposition.
1:347
So then, willing — that is, the faculty of willing, and the simple act of willing itself — is natural; but the thing willed, that is, willing something in particular, is gnomic and hypostatic.
1:348
Being, as we have said, among the equivocal terms, 'will' at times signifies the willing, at other times the thing willed.
1:349
For one must know that willing is one thing, to will is another, to will something in particular and in a particular manner is another, the thing willed is another, the faculty of willing is another, and the one who wills is another — just as sight is one thing, to see is another, to see something in particular and in a particular manner is another, the visible is another, the faculty of sight is another, and the one who sees is another.
1:350
For sight is the very faculty of the soul for seeing, operating in the eye, by which we see.
1:351
所謂「看」,即是運用視覺能力、加以運作,並且觀看;
To see is to make use of the visual faculty, to operate, and to look;
1:352
and no one sees without having sight, that is, the faculty of seeing.
1:353
What one sees is to see the sky, or the earth, or something else.
1:354
How one sees is to see well or ill.
1:355
The visible is that which underlies sight, that is, the body seen, or its colour, or its shape.
1:356
「能視者」則是本性上具有視覺能力者,例如人本性上具有看的能力,即使他正在睡眠,即使他已失明;
The 'capable of seeing' is that which possesses by nature the visual faculty, as man possesses by nature the faculty of seeing, even if he is asleep, even if he has been blinded;
1:357
for man is a seeing animal.
1:358
One who sees is he who has made use of sight, that is, of the visual faculty, and is operating and looking.
1:359
In the same way, the willing is itself the very faculty of willing which is given to the soul by nature from the Creator, that is, the capacity to will.
1:360
「意欲」則是以運作方式運用意願能力,並有所渴慕;
To will is to exercise the faculty of willing in operation, and to desire;
1:361
and no one wills without having the willing, that is, the capacity to will.
1:362
「所願之物」則是隸屬於意願之下者,即我們所意欲的那件事本身;
The willed is that which underlies the willing, the very thing which we will;
1:363
for example, I will to sail — sailing is the willed; I will to be temperate — being temperate is the willed.
1:364
The unwilled is that which someone does not will, just as the invisible is that which someone does not see.
1:365
What one wills is to will to be united to God, to will to eat, to will to drink, to will to sail, to will to be joined to a woman.
1:366
How one wills is to will well, that is, to will rightly and according to the law of God to unite with one's own wife, or wickedly and contrary to the law of God with another man's.
1:367
The 'capable of willing' is that which possesses by nature the faculty of willing, as man, angel, and God.
1:368
因為他們各自本性上皆具有意願能力;
For each of these possesses by nature the faculty of willing;
1:369
for indeed each of the hypostases of the Godhead wills, and each hypostasis of angels wills, and each hypostasis of men wills.
1:370
凡每一位格所具有者,皆屬本性所有;
And whatever each hypostasis possesses is natural;
1:371
for that which is natural is what is observed in all hypostases of the same species and of the same essence.
1:372
One who wills is he who has made use of the willing, that is, of the faculty of willing, and is desiring — that is, a hypostasis.
1:373
因此,「意志」一詞有時指意願,亦即意願能力,有時則指所願之物,亦即我們所意欲的那件事本身;
The will, then, sometimes signifies the willing, that is, the faculty of willing, and sometimes the willed, that is, the very thing which we will;
1:374
the willing, then, is natural, and simply to will is natural.
1:375
因為每個人都具有意欲的能力,每個人也都在意欲,亦即運用其意願;
For every man has the capacity to will, and every man wills, that is, makes use of the willing;
1:376
for man is a willing animal.
1:377
But the willed is not natural alone, but also gnomic and hypostatic.
1:378
但並非每個人都以相同的方式意欲,也並非意欲相同之事;
But not every man wills in the same way, nor the same thing;
