And one ought not to be zealous about vain things.
1:4727
所以這些驕傲的人也過分地行驕傲;
So these proud men also abundantly work pride;
1:4728
for not all against whom they exalt themselves will become subject to their hands, unless God should deliver them up.
1:4729
'... [take courage in your] heart, all you who hope in the Lord.'
1:4730
Having recounted all the contests, he anoints them for endurance, for courage.
1:4731
And he does not speak of those who fear, but of those who hope.
1:4732
And we said that these are those who work the good out of longing for the promises.
1:4733
These, then, are ready to be made manly and to be strengthened and to draw near to God.
1:4734
And each one who cleaves to him becomes one spirit with him.
1:4735
And if each of those who cleave to the Lord becomes one with him, then when there are many who cleave to him, by way of participation they all become one spirit.
1:4736
'Blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven.'
1:4737
The forgiveness of sins is a new birth, a birth upon a birth.
1:4738
For this reason it is called regeneration.
1:4739
As the palinodia (recantation-song) signifies a song upon a song, so also regeneration (palingenesia) is another birth supervening upon a birth that has already taken place.
1:4740
It was fitting, then, that the psalm concerning regeneration should be placed at a number that contains certain virtues.
1:4741
它是由第四個平方數,即五乘五所構成,並加上完全數中的第一個,即六;
And it is composed from the fourth square, namely five times five, and it takes an addition of the first of the perfect numbers, namely six;
1:4742
for the first of the perfect numbers, added to the fourth of the squares, makes up thirty-one.
1:4743
Five times five is a square.
1:4744
A square is that which is equal times equal.
1:4745
那麼,這些數字加在一起,便造成了與重生相稱的數;
These numbers, then, added together, have made something suited to regeneration;
1:4746
for it must derive its constitution from a perfect number and from a square, on account of stability.
1:4747
The former birth proved easily shaken.
1:4748
The deceit of the serpent removed the first-formed ones from perfect virtue and from the keeping of the divine commandment which they had received from God.
1:4749
It was fitting, then, that the second birth should be more stable.
1:4750
It has stability from the square; it has perfection also from the six, in that the number composed and completed from its own parts is deficient in nothing.
1:4751
雖然二十五是一個平方數,但它的凹陷卻是來自可感之物;
And though twenty-five is a square, yet it has its hollowness from the objects of sense;
1:4752
for the objects of sense happen to be five: the visible, the audible, the tasteable, the smellable, the touchable.
1:4753
然而,即使在可感之物中也有完全與穩固;
Nevertheless, even among the objects of sense there is perfection and stability;
1:4754
for what is praiseworthy is given even sensibly, but it is perfected through the hexad, through perfection.
1:4755
這篇之前的那篇詩篇——我指的是第三十篇——涵蓋了人的生育;
The psalm before this one — I mean the thirtieth — embraces human generation;
1:4756
for one who has been born can, at thirty years old, be a grandfather, and she who reaches maturity at thirty years can be a grandmother.
1:4757
These things the disciples of the physicians also say:
1:4758
one who has reached fourteen years can produce fertile seed.
1:4759
If, then, this is deposited into the workshop of nature, a living creature is brought to completion and is born in the fifteenth year.
1:4760
Then this same one, again having reached fourteen years, can be fertile, and by the thirtieth year is shown to be a grandfather.
1:4761
Yet triplicity, above all among things subject to generation, possesses this perfection in a prior degree.
1:4762
This generation, then, being more properly human, exists prior to the second generation, which is set according to the number mentioned, possessing stability through the twenty-five and completeness through the six.
1:4763
It remains for us to see what mystery the very beginning of this psalm contains.
1:4764
The psalm is inscribed 'of understanding,' of David's understanding, so that the meaning contained within the letters may be grasped—just as when you say concerning medical theorems that:
1:4765
These writings belong to the understanding of such-and-such a physician—according to Peter, those of Galen; according to others, those of Menemachus.
1:4766
But David's understanding is not merely human; it is divine, and it has practice conjoined with it:
1:4767
'A good understanding have all they that do it.'
1:4768
There is an understanding equal in power to wisdom, as when it is said:
1:4769
'a spirit of wisdom and of understanding.'
1:4770
This understanding is contemplative; it concerns the mysteries of godliness and the doctrines of the truth.
1:4771
But the other is the practical one, that which does:
1:4772
for 'a good understanding have all they that do it.'
1:4773
Practical virtue also has understanding and knowledge:
1:4774
for how do we know whether things are practical or ethical, unless we understand them? And Paul, indeed, when writing practical injunctions, says:
1:4775
'May God give you understanding in all things.'
1:4776
He was speaking about offerings, about the necessity that the teacher be supported by those whom he instructs.
1:4777
And since it seemed to concern him, or he himself was the teacher, having spoken in a veiled manner about the necessity that the teacher be assisted by his disciples, he says:
1:4778
'May God give you understanding in all things.'
1:4779
Understanding, then, is manifold; the word is equivocal, having many significations.
1:4780
But since here he is speaking about hidden things, it is that understanding which is according to knowledge that is meant, the one akin to wisdom:
1:4781
for the psalm contains mysteries.
1:4782
It is impossible to understand grammatical discourses unless one has an understanding of letters; and it is not possible to understand philosophical discourses unless one has knowledge of the theorem being expounded in them.
1:4783
So too it is impossible to understand the things of God apart from divine understanding.
1:4784
But why is this understanding granted to David alone, or said to be from David's? — Consider that properties are recognized sometimes from the giver and sometimes from the receiver.
1:4785
So, for instance, the Holy Spirit is spoken of in Scripture sometimes as Elijah's, sometimes as John's.
1:4786
In the same way the gospel too is spoken of sometimes as God's, inasmuch as God gives and ordains it:
1:4787
for 'set apart unto the gospel of God'; and sometimes from the one who ministers it:
1:4788
for 'according to my gospel'; and it is sometimes spoken of even from those who proclaim it, who have received the gospel; and sometimes without qualification:
1:4789
'Repent and believe in the gospel.'
1:4790
Such names, when with and without an addition they signify the same thing, exist both with a divine addition and without it—as I was saying, simply 'gospel' and 'gospel of God.'
1:4791
It is therefore the same thing to say simply 'gospel' and 'gospel of God.'
1:4792
So then, understanding, on the one hand, is from God who gives it, but on the other hand it is said to be the understanding of the prophet and sacred psalmist who has received it.
1:4793
'Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.'
1:4794
Iniquity is the sinful act of one who does not have the law:
1:4795
for the transgressor of the law is called 'lawless.'
1:4796
'Lawless deeds ensnare a man.'
1:4797
'The lawless one, in order to sin, speaks within himself.'
1:4798
Even though in another way sin and iniquity are the same thing:
1:4799
for this is what John the divine writes in his epistle:
1:4800
'Everyone who commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.'
1:4801
If therefore one has sinned, it is in some sense iniquity:
1:4802
for by binding them with a copulative conjunction he showed that they are two.
1:4803
'and sin is lawlessness.'
1:4804
Sin is, as it were, a genus of lawlessness:
1:4805
for I was saying that it is a species of lawlessness, when the one who acts wickedly does not have the law.
1:4806
And this too is called sin, as is the transgression or disobedience of the law which I called lawlessness.
1:4807
Everyone who has a horse also has an animal; the animal is the genus.
1:4808
Not everyone who has an animal has a horse, but the one who has a horse has an animal.
1:4809
The one who has the species has the genus and the species.
1:4810
So then here too he speaks in this way, inasmuch as he calls the same thing both lawlessness and sin.
1:4811
But conceptually it has a difference, since the one is universal, the other particular; the one is a genus, the other a species:
1:4812
for I was saying that the name of sin is applied both to transgression of the law and to lawlessness.
1:4813
Both classes, then, sin:
1:4814
看哪,這些沒有律法的人,他們犯罪;
behold, these who are without law, they sin;
1:4815
and as many as have sinned under the law:
1:4816
these are they who have wisdom, they who have transgression of the law.
1:4817
Forgiveness of iniquities comes about when the divine law, the spiritual one that turns souls back, prevails over those who commit lawlessness.
1:4818
And I say thus: the forgiveness of sins does not come about immediately.
1:4819
Jesus forgives, as when he says:
1:4820
'The Son of Man has authority to forgive sins.'
1:4821
'Child, your sins are forgiven.'
1:4822
He has given a power that makes new.
1:4823
And the energy, coming upon it, destroyed the evil.
1:4824
Blessed, then, are those whose sins have been forgiven.
1:4825
Henceforth they hold fast to the blameless law of God which turns souls back.
1:4826
Forgiveness of sins, then, comes about when the divine law that is according to the gospel draws near:
1:4827
for this is the spiritual law by which souls are turned back, as I said.
1:4828
And the sins that arise and increase through transgression of the law have a covering.
1:4829
The sins, on the one hand, are covered over.
1:4830
But it is impossible for those once baptized to obtain the washing again.
1:4831
And they are covered over through works of repentance.
1:4832
But you say that sins, once concealed beneath the covering, are preserved.
1:4833
Does not love, he says, cover a multitude of sins? For it does not utterly abolish the sins, but does so in another manner.
1:4834
For the one who loves labours at the works of love.
1:4835
For surely no one who shows love toward his neighbour speaks against him, reviles him, or wrongs him.
1:4836
But when a man does this, he does not have love toward him.
1:4837
All these things are covered over, being no longer operative — not because they have been rooted out and hidden by it, but because love, coming upon them, has hidden those things; that is, it has removed them and put them outside.
1:4838
And if one must speak with precision: love, coming upon the sin, brings the sin in actuality to a halt, while the potentiality thereafter remains preserved.
1:4839
If anything is covered over, it is the activity.
1:4840
For example, the robber who repented had sin in actuality.
1:4841
The Saviour granted him forgiveness.
1:4842
The activities by which he practised robbery were cast off.
1:4843
But the potentialities remain, and they are covered over.
1:4844
For no heed is to be given to those who say that evil is a privation.
1:4845
There are certain people — indeed a whole sect, that of the Donatists, which says this — who declare that:
1:4846
It is impossible for one who has cast off virtue to take it up again.
1:4847
Just as it is impossible for one who has lost his sense-perception to regain it — and for this reason blindness and deafness are a privation — so also they reason concerning virtue.
1:4848
But to us, however simple we are — or rather to us who are called ignorant babblers — they say that such a thing is no longer possible.
1:4849
For they say that after these things there is no repentance, that it is not possible to take up virtue again, but that evil abides unto the ages of ages and brings a corresponding punishment.
1:4850
Sins, therefore, are covered over in the manner I have described.
1:4851
For it is a blessed thing to have the potentiality for evil.
1:4852
Contraries cannot coexist together.
1:4853
He who has virtue in actuality has the potentiality for evil, and this indeed is a blessed thing.
1:4854
One ought not, therefore, to have virtue in potentiality, but in actuality.
1:4855
For this reason God also, from the beginning, having made man according to His own image and likeness and upright — wherefore the good was, as it were, ready at hand — immediately also gave a law forbidding sin, that sin might ever remain in potentiality.
1:4856
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not reckon sin, neither is there deceit in his mouth.
1:4857
Paul took this as referring both to those of the circumcision and to those of the Gentiles.
1:4858
This blessing, he says, is upon the circumcision and upon the uncircumcision.
1:4859
By 'law' he took, within that restraint of the literal precept, the good — the good law.
1:4860
那些從外邦人而來的,是不守律法的;
Lawless are those who come from among the Gentiles;
1:4861
for though they have no law, they are a law unto themselves.
1:4862
But when they were called to the true God — not the one conceived according to common notion — they are no longer lawless.
1:4863
The blessing can belong to both kinds of the lawless: to the Gentiles, or to those who have their sins covered over, the Jews.
1:4864
But the former had the law, so that a distinction arises between the circumcision and the uncircumcision.
1:4865
This state existed before the Gospel, when the human race was divided into two men, into the circumcised and the uncircumcised.
1:4866
But when our Lord was pleased to come, He joined both orders together, creating the two into one new man.
1:4867
這新人不是外邦人,這新人也不是出於受割禮的,而是一個新人,正如起初也曾有一個人一樣;
The new man is not a Gentile, the new man is not of the circumcision, but one new man, just as in the beginning too there came to be one man;
1:4868
for there was then no difference of circumcision and uncircumcision.
1:4869
They are created into a man through repentance, through coming to know the former manner of life — and the former manner of life, that before the Law, is evangelical.
1:4870
Whenever, then, the Greeks scoff, saying:
1:4871
「基督教是到近來才被帶到世上的」;
'Christianity was brought into the world only recently';
1:4872
we, however, are more ancient, and we show that before Moses, and before the graven images were brought into public view and the making of idols arose, the way of life of men was such as Christians now have, living according to practical and contemplative virtue.
1:4873
Into that one man, therefore, He created and made him new — new not as being different, but new as distinguished over against the old.
1:4874
Whenever a succession of commandments comes, that former one becomes old, as we have often said, that the law which comes upon makes the former one old.
1:4875
So too, then, the religion of the Jews, which is according to the shadow, is old, since it has been succeeded by the Gospel.
1:4876
But since the covenant of the Gospel is unsucceeded — for even if heaven and earth pass away, the words of Jesus remain — for this reason it is called the new covenant, because it is unsucceeded.
1:4877
所以,那些不守律法之人與罪人的生活也有了更替;
There was therefore a succession also of the life of the lawless and of the sinners;
1:4878
for the iniquities of the former were forgiven, and the sins of the latter were covered over, and thereafter a man came to be.
1:4879
He speaks no longer of the lawless one or the sinner, and he says:
1:4880
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not reckon sin.
1:4881
Sin is a species of lawlessness.
1:4882
It can also be referred to the pattern of those who are saved — I mean the man of the Lord.
1:4883
因為罪不算在他身上;
For sin is not reckoned to him;
1:4884
for he neither knew it nor committed it.
1:4885
Neither is there deceit in his mouth.
1:4886
He it is who speaks truth in his heart, according to the psalm that says this:
1:4887
He who walks blameless and works righteousness, who speaks truth in his heart — the one who speaks truth in his heart has no deceit in his mouth, has no fraudulent word.
1:4888
Neither is there deceit in his mouth.
1:4889
有些人口中沒有詭詐,心裡卻有;
Some have no deceit in their mouth, but have it in their heart;
1:4890
for 'your heart', it is said to a certain man, 'is full of deceit.'
1:4891
And to Elymas the sorcerer the Apostle said:
1:4892
所以,當心裡沒有詭詐時,口中也沒有詭詐,乃是一件大事;
It is a great thing, therefore, to have no deceit in the mouth, when the heart has no deceit;
1:4893
for it is possible for a certain crafty person to speak all such things as to seem to have no deceit.
1:4894
他口中沒有詭詐,不像那些詭辯者;
He has no deceit in his mouth, as do the sophists;
1:4895
I do not mean the teachers of the rhetoricians, but the sophistical ones who lie by means of their sophisms.
1:4896
For even if it should sometimes arise from true premises, yet the conclusion is false.
1:4897
Because I kept silence, my bones grew old, from my crying all the day long.
1:4898
Because I kept silence, from my crying all the day long, my bones grew old.
1:4899
But 'my bones grew old' has been wrongly placed thus:
1:4900
Because I kept silence about these things, the 'my bones grew old' comes from my crying all the day long.
1:4901
It is not from my crying out all day long that my bones have grown old, but rather because I kept silent from crying out all the day long.
1:4902
For before this I possessed the day which the Sun of Righteousness makes.
1:4903
And I cried aloud, partly in prayer, partly in glorifying God who graciously grants me the day.
1:4904
Since, then, I kept silent from crying out all the day long, my bones have grown old.
1:4905
It has been said by us before this also, that by 'bones' he means the vigorous powers of the soul and the doctrines of piety.
1:4906
And just as these bones hold together the whole body—for from them both the veins and all things are suspended—
1:4907
'All my bones shall say: Lord, who is like unto thee?' It is not that these physical bones have sensation or understanding.
1:4908
At any rate, when they are sawn through, they feel nothing.
1:4909
Therefore my bones have grown old.
1:4910
When they were united to God, then they cried out all the day long.
1:4911
But since silence succeeded the crying out, my bones have grown old.
1:4912
I have already said that the things without succession... 'he beheld all the sons of men.'
1:4913
These, then, are the sons of men whom he beheld.
1:4914
From his prepared dwelling-place.
1:4915
His dwelling-place, as it were his temple, is the settled condition......
1:4916
This throne is prepared and is a dwelling-place......
1:4917
'Thy throne is prepared from that time; thou art from everlasting.'
1:4918
And we receive a notion of his throne also......
1:4919
he comes, and thus, hearing of his temple, we receive him as prepared together with it......
1:4920
It signifies, as it were, the settled state of God, the majesty of God.
1:4921
His dwelling-place is prepared.
1:4922
From this very participation it becomes prepared to make room for the presence of God......
1:4923
Holiness comes to be, little by little, in the one who possesses it.
1:4924
For that one begins to make progress......
1:4925
The dwelling-place of God is prepared, not......
1:4926
By progress he becomes great from small, being made proportionate to his existence......
1:4927
And sometimes the good itself is called 'prepared,' as when it says:
1:4928
'My heart is prepared, O God.'
1:4929
For he who has his heart made ready is a temple of God; his dwelling-place is prepared.
1:4930
'If it has been declared to thee, O man, what is good, or what is pleasant, save to do justice and to love mercy and to be ready to walk with the Lord thy God?' And again:
1:4931
'Thine ear hath attended to the preparation of their heart.'
1:4932
'He looked down upon all who inhabit the earth.'
1:4933
Those who inhabit the earth are others besides the sons of men.
1:4934
For there dwell men who have not kept that which is according to the image, nor attained......
1:4935
But the sons of these men do not dwell, but sojourn......
1:4936
For he makes his sun to rise, as upon the good, so also upon the wicked......
1:4937
He watches over all the sons of men, and those who inhabit......
1:4938
For he gives food to all flesh.
1:4939
all those upon the earth......
1:4940
For we do not speak of the sons of men and those who inhabit the earth as parallel.
1:4941
'He who fashioned their hearts individually.'
1:4942
In Scripture 'to make' is distinguished from 'to fashion':
1:4943
For God made man according to his own image and likeness, but he fashioned the man out of the dust from the earth.
1:4944
And Job too, indeed, says both these things:
1:4945
'Thy hands fashioned me and made me.'
1:4946
If he uses this expression in its proper sense, the inner man would be 'made,' while the outer is 'fashioned.'
1:4947
'Remember that thou didst fashion me as clay.'
1:4948
The word 'fashioning' signifies... (a shaping).
1:4949
But he who makes is able, both in power and in will, as parents, to bring into existence......
1:4950
In the passages read before, we were saying that 'to come to be' differs from 'to be created'......
1:4951
so too 'to fashion' is not altogether the same thing.
1:4952
He does not say that all hearts have been fashioned by God together, but individually.
1:4953
The hearts of... were fashioned individually.
1:4954
for heart to run together with heart.
1:4955
They differ altogether, and......
1:4956
though many possess them, they possess them with a certain difference.
1:4957
This, at any rate, he also says in Proverbs:
1:4958
'Just as faces are not alike to faces, so neither are the hearts of men alike.'
1:4959
It is difficult, then, to find two faces alike.
1:4960
Even if the tale of Pollux and Castor be told, yet it goes only so far as a myth.
1:4961
They say that the two hemispheres are signified by these two names.
1:4962
Wherefore they say that these live day by day in alternation:
1:4963
for the hemispheres are thus:
1:4964
when the one semicircle comes to be beneath the earth, the other comes to be above the earth......
1:4965
because the semicircles are indistinguishable in their likeness.
1:4966
Let us grant, however, that such men have indeed come to be......
1:4967
It is difficult, then, for face to run together with face in likeness......
1:4968
As, then, faces are not alike to faces, so neither are the hearts of men alike.
1:4969
In any case, no one knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him.
1:4970
If no one knows the things of a man except the spirit within him, the things of men have each been fashioned individually.
1:4971
By 'moulding' here he means, as it were, the blending and ...
1:4972
For I said that they are not subject to the more sensible kind of moulding, as is potter's clay ...
1:4973
the hearts; he knows all their works.
1:4974
For since one properly knows works if from the ...
1:4975
We have said on another occasion too that he who applies his mind to mechanical works ...
1:4976
you are able to judge whether the parts of the clock are well made or not.
1:4977
Therefore one heart does not keep pace with another heart.
1:4978
Wherefore he alone is called the one who knows the hearts of all, according to the prayer sent up by the apostles, when the disciples were making a choice ...
1:4979
No one else is able to search out the heart of man.
1:4980
Wherefore he is not able to distinguish one heart from another.
1:4981
he who understands the mind of men
1:4982
even if another were standing by ...
1:4983
He moulds the hearts one by one, apart.
1:4984
The word 'moulding' does not signify the fashioning of the heart ...
1:4985
For indeed the elders who approve of its excellence, which it ...
1:4986
Good is the moulding of your heart.
1:4987
They do not say that the substance of the heart is good, but the moulding, according to which it acted with skilful generalship.
1:4988
It came to be, he says, unto good ...
1:4989
But it is possible, according to a second interpretation, to say that the moulding of the heart is then good, when it abhors vice or ignorance, when it is kept just as it came to be in the beginning.
1:4990
The man who came to be according to the image and likeness of God is not said to have been moulded, but to have been made.
1:4991
But the man who came to be out of clay and matter is said to be a moulded work of God:
1:4992
Remember that you moulded me out of clay.
1:4993
And of both the operative powers of God it is said:
1:4994
Your hands moulded me and made me.
1:4995
to give form to the heart ...
1:4996
... is a moulding of the heart, not the bringing of it into existence.
1:4997
The first making of our hearts had no difference:
1:4998
wherefore it was not then said that each heart was moulded singly, apart.
1:4999
There was no difference among them from one another.
1:5000
Here this is said after the descent.
1:5001
the 'one heart and one soul' of the disciples? According to this, of those who believe according to being of one mind:
1:5002
For do we not take it as wholes out of wholes?
1:5003
so that the state of moulding will at some point cease? — namely the moulding that is singular and apart, since this too took its beginning from us.
1:5004
And it took its beginning from us and will attain its end, when it comes to pass that, just as the Father and the Son are one, so too all rational beings.
1:5005
I will that they be in him, that just as I and you are one, Father, so we all may be one.
1:5006
Does 'a thing made' differ from 'a creature'? — It differs.
1:5007
'To make' signifies a coming-into-substance out of what did not exist, not a giving of form:
1:5008
but the word 'creation' indicates also a certain ordering of what has come to be.
1:5009
The word 'creation' extends even to inanimate things:
1:5010
making peace and creating evils.
1:5011
And on the ready surface of it we say this:
1:5012
being the provider of all things, he both gives them peace and creates the evils.
1:5013
And by another line of thought the saying was made clear to us thus:
1:5014
he creates evils, as the unclean creation, that it may no longer be unclean; he creates it that it may become clean, and he creates the two into one new man in himself.
1:5015
he creates the evils, that they may no longer be evils:
1:5016
for instance, he creates the evil men, that they may no longer be evil.
1:5017
the quality? — the, as it were, quality:
1:5018
In the case of the thing made he did not say it was 'unto good works,' but 'unto being.'
1:5019
But they are created unto good works, that they may do good works.
1:5020
so that the moulding may be from the quality? — thus, as it is a form:
1:5021
for the substance of the heart was moulded.
1:5022
But the word 'creation' also extends to sensible things:
1:5023
and having created the world out of formless matter.
1:5024
upon rational beings by way of parallel? — yes, upon rational beings universally.
1:5025
it is found extending also to the irrational souls.
1:5026
he who understands all their works
1:5027
He understands their works, since he knows the heart; but the beginnings of the works that come to pass are taken from perception.
1:5028
Among us many welcome men out of what they possess; and some, becoming imitators of God, do so for no other reason than that it is a good thing to give rather than to receive:
1:5029
for giving makes one like God, but receiving does not:
1:5030
for each of those who receive is receptive of something.
1:5031
but he is one who bestows; and this is what it means to say that it is good to give rather than to receive.
1:5032
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
1:5033
There is a certain lesser degree of progress:
1:5034
Another shows mercy out of fellow-feeling, taking care lest, being human himself, he fall into such straits.
1:5035
In this way, at any rate, Christians also nourish those in prisons out of fellow-feeling.
1:5036
Others again, having sometimes seen a man laid low by disease, pity him because of his being afflicted.
1:5037
And yet others do this even in the hunt for glory, that they may be glorified.
1:5038
But each of these, not being perfect, admits of the more and the less:
1:5039
for the perfect alone is that which does not admit of the more and the less, the right hand and the left.
1:5040
and each of these has an infinite range of difference.
1:5041
But the 'more' and the 'less' are taken not only with respect to intensity, but also with respect to time.
1:5042
This infinitude, therefore, is comprehended by God alone.
1:5043
He alone knows this.
1:5044
For this reason He knows the heart of each one.
1:5045
And it is difficult, perhaps, to find one heart precisely identical to another heart.
1:5046
We, then, do these things which we have mentioned out of vainglory, or out of favouritism.
1:5047
But to receive the saints hospitably is another thing.
1:5048
因此,對聖徒所行的並不稱為施捨;
It is not, therefore, called almsgiving in the case of the saints;
1:5049
for when we share in the needs of the saints,
1:5050
the one who gives to a saint ought rather to reckon that he receives substance, than that he gives.
1:5051
A king is not saved by great power.
1:5052
And in the literal sense this is true.
1:5053
Many who had great power and a large host of soldiers were captured, and by no means does the multitude of soldiers save the king.
1:5054
法老率領大軍出來追趕希伯來人,卻不能因他強大的兵力得救;
Pharaoh went forth with a great force to pursue the Hebrews, and he was not saved by his great power;
1:5055
for the chariots of Pharaoh and his host He cast into the sea.
1:5056
And we find also in the other narratives of the Scriptures that few have often prevailed over many.
1:5057
And in a general way it was said to the Hebrews by way of prophecy:
1:5058
'One of you shall pursue a thousand, and two shall put ten thousand to flight, and because of the voice of five shall many flee.'
1:5059
The historical sense, therefore, holds good.
1:5060
而屬靈的引申解釋也極具連貫性;
And the anagogical interpretation too has much coherence;
1:5061
for many who seem to have an equipment of arguments and a well-drilled power stumble, and are refuted by the truth itself, and in this respect we say that:
1:5062
even if someone boasts of a kingdom on account of some other preparation, or some other cleverness, or through those who champion him, he is by no means saved in this great power.
1:5063
It is also possible to understand it thus:
1:5064
既然按著寓意有某些君王,如哥林多人便是(保羅論到他們說他們作了王),亞伯拉罕也是從神而來的君王——那憑自己的能力使自己如此作王、而不等候那施憐憫之神的人,就不能靠自己的能力得救;
since there are certain kings in the allegorical sense, as were the Corinthians, concerning whom he says that they reigned—and Abraham too was a king from God—the one who has given himself, out of his own power, so to reign, and has not awaited the God who shows mercy, is not saved in his own power;
1:5065
just as neither does a guarded city remain unharmed without the cooperation of God, nor does the house that is being built come to completion unless the Architect of all things takes part.
1:5066
And a giant shall not be saved by the abundance of his strength.
1:5067
resting on something other, or on his full armour and his own strength and greatness.
1:5068
For the one who armed himself with the name of the Lord took him and cast him down.
1:5069
And indeed we find many great ones brought down in the Scriptures, because they thought great things of themselves.
1:5070
亞瑪力人已預備好爭戰,且看似比以色列更強壯;
Amalek was equipped for war and seemed to be stronger than Israel;
1:5071
for Israel was not at all well-prepared for warfare, and yet when Moses raised his hands, Amalek was worn down and brought low, and the lifting up of the hands prevailed over him, and he was not saved by his own strength.
1:5072
If any warrior against God, having lofty things exalted against the knowledge of God, rests upon the strength he possesses and swaggers, he is by no means saved.
1:5073
At times the one wise in God confutes him and casts him down from the arrogance he has.
1:5074
A horse is a false hope for safety.
