Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks.
1:5404
If the holy one always rejoices, he is never cast down nor downcast over the gloomy things that are present.
1:5405
For over these things too he rejoices—he rejoices as over contests.
1:5406
He beholds the victory that succeeds the contests, and expecting the crowns and the prizes he rejoices, even if the circumstances surrounding him are unpleasant.
1:5407
And lest anyone suppose that the blessing takes place merely in utterance, as though one were to speak by way of profession:
1:5408
His praise shall be continually in my mouth.
1:5409
In singing hymns to Him I bless Him.
1:5410
His praise shall be continually in my mouth.
1:5411
But we do not say this in such a way that something impossible would follow—namely, that he has praise in spoken utterance continually.
1:5412
For while sleeping he does not do this, and while eating he sometimes does not do it.
1:5413
In everything that I do, whether I eat or drink or sleep, I undertake these things while giving thanks to God.
1:5414
In this way, then, one must also understand the words: Rejoice always.
1:5415
If you take 'grace' according to active operation, the one who is asleep does not possess it.
1:5416
If you take 'pray' in the sense of praying demonstratively, it cannot be carried out unceasingly.
1:5417
Indeed, if anyone was recorded historically as praying three times a day—at midday or about the ninth hour, and let us grant also at evening.
1:5418
To pray unceasingly, therefore, is of this sort:
1:5419
Prayer is nothing other than the asking of good things from God.
1:5420
Whenever, then, someone through everything that he does asks good things of God, he is praying.
1:5421
And even if he does not perform the specific act, yet having a longing to obtain what is profitable, he is praying.
1:5422
That very longing is prayer.
1:5423
Whatever he may be doing, even if he is hindered from performing the specific act of prayer, yet he still possesses the asking of God.
1:5424
Thus indeed it is also said in the Wisdom of Sirach:
1:5425
The discourse of the godly man is wisdom continually.
1:5426
How can he expound wisdom continually? If we take it thus—and these things are often understood so in ordinary usage—as when in general we frequently seek someone and long to learn where one may meet with him:
1:5427
'He always sits in this surgery and is continually there'—not taking 'continually' to mean the whole day, but 'when he sits, he sits there rather than elsewhere.'
1:5428
He did not say simply 'his praise continually,' but 'his'—that is, God's own praise.
1:5429
For the one who seems to praise but not with right thoughts, not with truly theological understanding, does not praise for himself, nor does he praise Him.
1:5430
In the Lord shall my soul be praised.
1:5431
My soul is not praised primarily on account of anything else than its partaking of God.
1:5432
He wishes that his own soul be praised.
1:5433
He knows no other praise of the soul than this:
1:5434
For even if, as I said, someone is praised on account of knowledge, yet when this praise is compared with another that arises on account of God, it is not praise at all.
1:5435
Nothing is sweet except honey.
1:5436
There are indeed other sweet things, but in comparison with honey they are not sweet.
1:5437
My praise is from You in the great congregation.
1:5438
The praise which You give me arises on account of none other than You.
1:5439
In the Lord shall my soul be praised.
1:5440
In You, he says, we shall be praised all the day long.
1:5441
The whole span of our life is called 'day.'
1:5442
The phrase 'in You' can mean either 'on account of You' or 'by You.'
1:5443
Both meanings converge in the case of the holy one.
1:5444
He is both praised on account of God and holds his praise from God Himself.
1:5445
Let the meek hear and be glad.
1:5446
Just as the base man wishes to hide what he says and does, whenever he is not utterly abandoned, so the earnest man who is devoted to God wishes that what he says and what he does be known to all.
1:5447
He wishes his light to shine before men, so that they, seeing it, may glorify God.
1:5448
He wishes his words to go forth to others.
1:5449
And the one who converses, converses with others, not primarily with himself.
1:5450
Since, then, I have purposed to bless the Lord at every season and to have His praise continually in my mouth, so that my soul might be praised in Him—hear, you meek, and be glad.
1:5451
Imitate me, and you also become such as I am.
1:5452
But if he calls the meek greater than himself, he says:
1:5453
Hear, you meek, that I, who am being instructed by you and rank below you, am of such a kind:
1:5454
For what belongs to the lesser belongs also to the greater.
1:5455
The disciples are praiseworthy and praise the Lord—how much more the teachers who surpass them.
1:5456
That is: you who are meek and greater than I, having heard, be glad, because you have obtained such a disciple or fellow-partaker.
1:5457
Magnify the Lord with me.
1:5458
Having spoken about the meek, he then turns his discourse toward them:
1:5459
And upon me magnify the Lord with me.
1:5460
One magnifies God not by adding greatness to Him out of something small, but whenever one is able to grasp His greatness.
1:5461
The sun, then, only when one is able to grasp its magnitude—
1:5462
The sun, then, when it rises, is not at once beheld in the full extent of its magnitude,
1:5463
而是漸漸地被看為更大;
but little by little it is seen to be greater;
1:5464
for surely it does not itself receive any increase, but the beholder is improved and sees it more excellently.
1:5465
「你們要與我一同尊神為大,對神懷有崇高的思念」;
'Magnify the Lord, think great things concerning God, together with me';
1:5466
for the phrase 'magnify God' means to think great things concerning Him,
1:5467
'and let us together exalt His name.'
1:5468
神的稱號乃是加在那些殷勤敬虔的人身上;
The appellation of God is invoked upon the earnest and diligent;
1:5469
when, therefore, we have deeds and thoughts that correspond to the Name, then His name is exalted—not in a scattered manner, but 'together,' when we are being made complete in the same mind and the same judgment.
1:5470
另按一種意思,也可以說神的名被「一同」高舉;
It is possible also, according to another sense, to say that the name of God is exalted 'together';
1:5471
some drag down the appellation of God to lifeless matter, so as to call statues gods,
1:5472
and in a certain way they debase the naming of God.
1:5473
And others derive the naming from their own belly, making a god by their teaching out of being gluttonous and devouring all things.
1:5474
When, therefore, we regard as God none of the things that are not God, but only Him who fashioned all things, then we have exalted His name 'together.'
1:5475
We all in the Gospel are commanded to say in prayer:
1:5476
and even if the utterance is imperative in form, yet since we say it in prayer, it is a prayer.
1:5477
按著高舉這名的一切意思,我們也領受了這名被尊為聖;
According to all the senses of the exalting of the Name, we take also its being hallowed;
1:5478
不要行任何褻瀆的事,任何卑賤低下的事,好叫神的名被高舉,好叫祂的名被尊為聖;
do nothing profane, nothing paltry and base, that the name of God may be exalted, that it may be hallowed;
1:5479
要使神的稱號遠離一切匍匐於地的事物,遠離一切屬地的事物;
remove the appellation of God from everything that grovels on the ground, from every earthly thing;
1:5480
and this will especially come to pass when God becomes all in all, when, having fled from pain and grief and groaning, everlasting gladness lays hold of you.
1:5481
'I sought out the Lord, and He heard me.'
1:5482
He did not say simply 'I sought,' but 'I did this with intensity.'
1:5483
他表明,這裡所說的尋求乃是藉著禱告成就的;
He shows that the seeking now spoken of comes about through prayer;
1:5484
and even if one who wishes to know God seeks Him out as far as is possible, yet he has no end to it.
1:5485
To be heard is perhaps to find, to be brought to perfection.
1:5486
'I sought out the Lord, and He was found by me.'
1:5487
Thus indeed it is written in Wisdom:
1:5488
'He is found by those who do not disbelieve Him; He manifests Himself to those who seek Him.'
1:5489
Here, then, the word 'He heard' says this: that the seeking came about through prayers.
1:5490
He who prays without ceasing seeks out God, and he had Him as one who hearkens, having found the thing sought.
1:5491
'And out of all my afflictions He delivered me.'
1:5492
關於這些事,我們已多次說過:神救人脫離患難,並不表示要人置身於患難之外;
Often have we said concerning these things, that God's delivering from affliction does not signify coming to be outside of affliction;
1:5493
for if the apostles speak truly when they say:
1:5494
'Through many afflictions we must enter into the kingdom of God,' then we must never come to be outside of being afflicted.
1:5495
然而,若不這樣理解「拯救」,那麼眾聖徒就從未蒙應允了;
But if one should not take 'deliver' in this way, then the saints were never heard;
1:5496
for ever afflicted and in want they passed their life to the very last breath.
1:5497
'Draw near to Him and be enlightened, and your faces shall never be put to shame.'
1:5498
Having spoken of the disposition he has toward God, and having spoken of the benefits that come from God to those who seek Him out and are heard, he exhorts either all or many, and says:
1:5499
'Draw near to Him and be enlightened.'
1:5500
Not to those already enlightened and able to say:
1:5501
「耶和華啊,祢臉上的光已印記在我們身上」;他並非對這樣的人說「你們要親近」;
'The light of Your countenance has been marked upon us, O Lord,' does he say 'draw near';
1:5502
for those who have already drawn near are light.
1:5503
So indeed the apostles, having drawn near, heard:
1:5504
'You are the light of the world.'
1:5505
Draw near, therefore, you who are far off, to Him, and be enlightened; and from your being enlightened comes freedom from shame.
1:5506
「你們的臉必永不蒙羞」;
'And your faces shall never be put to shame';
1:5507
for they become enlightened, as those who give thanks have said:
1:5508
'The light of Your countenance has been marked upon us.'
1:5509
'The Lord shall be to you an everlasting light, and all shame shall be done away.'
1:5510
If before sin there was no shame, both Adam and Eve were naked, and they were not ashamed.
1:5511
They were naked of all evil; they had no garment covering the rational faculty; the reason was not concealed by irrational passions.
1:5512
But when sin came to be, then also thought and life became subject to passion, and shame came into being.
1:5513
所以,我們若親近那在犯罪時所離棄的光,我們的臉就不蒙羞,反倒大有坦然無懼的心;
If, therefore, we draw near to the light which we forsook when we were sinning, our faces are not put to shame; we have much boldness;
1:5514
'If our heart does not condemn us, we have boldness toward God.'
1:5515
If one sees himself uncondemned by heart and conscience, he has full boldness toward God, so as to say:
1:5516
'As the Lord lives, before whom I have stood in His presence.'
1:5517
The voice of one who speaks with boldness, and:
1:5518
'In the morning I shall stand before You and shall look upon You.'
1:5519
I have seen many things, but still more shall I contemplate...
1:5520
'And your faces shall never be put to shame.'
1:5521
We were saying that, when sin is present, the face of the soul is covered by shame, so that no longer are its beauty and the due proportion of its members beheld.
1:5522
But when enlightenment comes, then thereafter with unveiled face it reflects the glory of the Lord.
1:5523
No one who has a veiled face reflects the glory of God, but only if someone has cast off the veils that had come upon him.
1:5524
Those, then, who have come to their senses, having become their own worst enemies through evils, say:
1:5525
'Dishonor has covered our face.'
1:5526
Dishonor, that is, shame, has become a veil to us, upon our face.
1:5527
'This poor man cried out, and the Lord heard him.'
1:5528
He shows a certain man poor in respect of sin, poor in respect of all evil.
1:5529
If someone, having become free from evil and having cast off the wealth of ignorance and of evil, cries out to God, he has Him as one who hearkens.
1:5530
And perhaps, as I said above concerning the place of the hour, that it applies both to the lesser and to the greater, exhorting those already enlightened and blessing the Lord at all times, who are rich, he says:
1:5531
And if the poor man draws near and cries out, he is heard.
1:5532
It is also possible that this is said concerning the people gathered from among the Gentiles, namely that:
1:5533
The people who had no hope and were without God in the world, when they drew near and cried out, found Him attentive to them.
1:5534
At any rate he says, after other matters, in the same psalm:
1:5535
'The rich have become poor and have hungered,' meaning those of the circumcision who became poor by having cast away the Law and the Prophets.
1:5536
For this reason he also speaks in a demonstrative manner:
1:5537
He became worthy of being pointed out by holy men and by the Holy Spirit Himself.
1:5538
It is also possible for this to be said universally concerning all men:
1:5539
In relation to God the giver of wealth, who bestows great gifts, we are all poor.
1:5540
Did not Jesus become poor for our sakes? For consider the apostolic precision:
1:5541
That being rich, for our sakes He became poor.
1:5542
Being rich, for our sakes He became poor — to what end? That by His poverty we might become rich.
1:5543
For a poverty that produces wealth is not truly poverty.
1:5544
And just as He becomes a curse for our sake, that we might receive a blessing — yet a curse that produces blessing is not simply a curse, but is precisely this: a curse productive of blessing — so also is He poor.
1:5545
Who, being in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant.
1:5546
Behold the poverty which He assumed:
1:5547
Being truly rich, ever existing in the form of God and being the express image of God's substance, He took the form of the servant and endured all that belongs to poverty.
1:5548
He became sin for our sake, that we might become the righteousness of God; a curse, that we might inherit blessing; He underwent death and was made dead, that we might receive eternal life.
1:5549
Thus we descended together, reaching down even to your condition, so that, the mercies of God having laid hold of us first, we might raise you up.
1:5550
As certain men have told such a parable concerning the saints, that:
1:5551
Sailing in the vessel of this life, they saw many falling out of the boat and, being unable to swim, being carried down into the deep; and they leapt into the deep and seemed to suffer the same thing as those who were sunk — yet they did this for the help of those others, that they might raise up those who could not ascend by themselves.
1:5552
And out of all his afflictions He delivered him.
1:5553
The phrase 'to be delivered out of all afflictions' has already many times been explained to us as meaning not to be overcome, not the being placed outside of grievous things.
1:5554
The angel of the Lord will encamp round about those who fear Him, and will deliver them.
1:5555
An angel encamping round about those who fear God, and he delivers them from every enemy, from every affliction, from every wound.
1:5556
Is one angel sufficient to save all those who fear God from the adversary? Consider:
1:5557
One angel, when God willed it, destroyed a hundred and eighty-five thousand at a single stroke — and that though he was perhaps not a pure angel, since he was not ministering unto punishment.
1:5558
How much more, then, is the perfect man, who guards holiness, who is an eyewitness and minister of God, able to deliver many who fear God.
1:5559
But if to anyone the interpretation appears forced, then take it thus:
1:5560
Just as it says that God made man to rule over the irrational animals — and we do not mean the one particular individual, we do not mean this or that man, but the whole species.
1:5561
'I made the earth and man upon it':
1:5562
He thus named the whole species.
1:5563
Delivering them out of every affliction.
1:5564
You have this, at any rate, in the Gospel:
1:5565
See that you do not cause one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble.
1:5566
For their angels always behold the face of My Father who is in heaven.
1:5567
They are attendants of God; they behold His face; invisibly they behold the Invisible One.
1:5568
Behold then, of the many little ones many angels were spoken of, but of those who fear the Lord one angel is mentioned.
1:5569
It is said in the singular, for there is not even one apart from Him.
1:5570
It is also possible to say this:
1:5571
那些小子並非敬畏神,乃是懷有屬乎情慾的懼怕;
The little ones do not fear God, but have the fear that belongs to passion;
1:5572
for perfect love casts out fear.
1:5573
Do not fear those who kill the body but are not able to kill the soul.
1:5574
But those fear God who possess the surpassing fear, concerning which it is said in Sirach:
1:5575
The fear of the Lord surpasses all things; it comes to him who seeks it after much progress.
1:5576
These, then, who fear the Lord, are able to have one angel encamped and delivering them — even the Saviour Himself, concerning whom it is said:
1:5577
His name shall be called Angel of Great Counsel.
1:5578
For in many Scriptures an angel appears mentioned who does not fit any created being.
1:5579
Concerning Him, Jacob also speaks:
1:5580
The angel who delivers me out of all evils.
1:5581
But no one is able to deliver out of all evils except the Saviour, who has authority to forgive every sin.
1:5582
And when sin is forgiven, the punishment that follows it, the harmful consequences that ensue, departs together with the evil.
1:5583
Like a kind of enclosure and surrounding wall formed around them, it keeps them unassailable.
1:5584
And so in Zechariah, the eleventh of the twelve prophets, He says:
1:5585
Jerusalem shall be inhabited fruitfully; and He says:
1:5586
And I will be round about them as a pillar of fire and a wall encircling them.
1:5587
說「火」,乃因那些近前的人反要受害;
'Of fire,' rather because those who draw near are harmed;
1:5588
for immediately, within that same passage of the prophet, He says:
1:5589
Because he who touches you is as one who touches the apple of His eye.
1:5590
'To touch' here signifies 'to harm,' as in the passage:
1:5591
Touch not My anointed ones.
1:5592
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
1:5593
It has often been said to us that sensible and bodily things are of this nature:
1:5594
每一樣東西就只是它自己而已;
Each thing is only what it is;
1:5595
for instance, the pomegranate is nothing other than a pomegranate, the loaf a loaf.
1:5596
But the food that nourishes the inner man is spoken of according to various conceptions.
1:5597
It is called, at any rate, light; it is called also a fountain; it is called also bread and flesh, true food.
1:5598
Taste with the invisible taste, that of the inner man, and see that the Lord is good, that He is kind.
1:5599
Only taste, know that He is nourishing; behold a fountain of goodness, a fountain of kindness.
1:5600
Blessed is the man who hopes in Him.
1:5601
He who hopes upon Him, the good Lord — for he tastes of Him — will also experience His sweetness, and from this food he will possess all things; and, being nourished as an athlete, he will be strong, so that his wrestling is no longer against blood and flesh, but against principalities and powers.
1:5602
Taste and see that the Lord is good.
1:5603
If anyone is weary and sick in soul, let him taste of Him as of nourishment, as of One who prepares health, as of One who wards off harm.
1:5604
But this food not only satisfies, it also wards off harm; it casts away what is hurtful.
1:5605
Blessed, then, is not simply the human being, but the man — he who has done away with the things of the infant, who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, nor sat in the seat of the pestilent, but who has his own will in the law of the Lord.
1:5606
This man has his own will in the law of the Lord.
1:5607
For many keep the law in order that they may not be punished, or in order that they may seem worthy of praise.
1:5608
But the holy man, the perfect man, has his own will in the law of the Lord, so that his will is nothing other than the will of the law.
1:5609
And the will of the law is this:
1:5610
to forbid vice and to command virtue.
1:5611
For these, though not having a law, are a law unto themselves — so that they have their own law interwoven with the law of the Lord.
1:5612
Fear the Lord, all you His holy ones.
1:5613
For there is no want to those who fear Him.
1:5614
To all the holy ones I exhort: fear the Lord Himself.
1:5615
And just as nourishment comes to some, and to others wisdom, rendering them wise, and to yet others righteousness — and those to whom righteousness has come become righteous — so also do they partake of sanctification.
1:5616
For He Himself is also the sanctification, who became for us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption.
1:5617
Fear God, then, all you His holy ones.
1:5618
For there are those who are called holy in a general sense, but not His.
1:5619
As many as feign holiness seem indeed to be holy, but they are not God's.
1:5620
And he states the reason why all should do this:
1:5621
For there is no want to those who fear Him.
1:5622
The fear of God makes men free from want and lacking in nothing.
1:5623
Fear the Lord, all you His holy ones.
1:5624
Since there is no want to those who fear Him, that you may become lacking in nothing, fear Him, even God.
1:5625
And the fear of God, as I have said, is not something belonging to the passions, but is equal to reverence, equal to devout awe.
1:5626
Whenever we receive a vision of God, at once fear is heightened, devout awe comes upon us.
1:5627
For we do not fear Him as though dreading Him, not as though He were some bugbear, but as something surpassingly worthy of reverence.
1:5628
And since the Church is holy and glorious, standing at the right hand of the Savior, all those who together make her complete are holy.
1:5629
Therefore this saying can be applied to the calling of the Gentiles:
1:5630
Fear the Lord, all you His holy ones.
1:5631
For there is no want to those who fear Him.
1:5632
The rich have become poor and have hungered, but those who seek the Lord shall lack no good thing.
1:5633
The former ones, those who filled up the synagogue before the sojourning [of the Lord], being rich, fell into poverty.
1:5634
The rich have become poor and have hungered, but those who seek the Lord shall lack no good thing.
1:5635
When the kingdom of God was taken away from them, when the understanding of the divine Scriptures departed from them, when they turned away from the ancient Scripture and it from them, from being rich they became beggars.
1:5636
For since this wealth benefits its possessor in every way — for it becomes his food, and becomes his shelter and clothing — he says that these rich, having become poor, hungered.
1:5637
They cast away the spiritual food, they turned away from the bread of life.
1:5638
They became poor, then; yet even if they themselves became poor, those who seek the Lord are not lessened in good things, but become full of them, they shall partake of them perfectly.
1:5639
For just as the kingdom of the heavens has been taken away from those men — this too the mother of Jesus says:
1:5640
He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He has sent away empty.
1:5641
Those who were formerly rich were sent away empty.
1:5642
For even if they have the books of Moses and of the prophets, yet they are empty of their divine fullness.
1:5643
The fullness, then, of divine Scripture is not the shadow, but the truth and the Spirit.
1:5644
Those, then, who seek the Lord — for the word 'seek out' denotes intensity — are filled with all good things.
1:5645
Concerning this the psalmist too somewhere says, discoursing with his own soul:
1:5646
Bless the Lord, O my soul, who satisfies your desire with good things.
1:5647
Delight in the Lord, and He will give you the requests of your heart.
1:5648
In Him those find all good things who pass over from the shadow of the law and from partial knowledge and prophecy.
1:5649
But properly speaking, the good things — those free from want and most full — are the spiritual things of the law.
1:5650
For these lead by the hand into the truth that is face to face, that which brings perfection, in which no one will be imperfect.
1:5651
Come, children, listen to me.
1:5652
[Having shown that] from being rich they have become paupers and poor, and that those who seek the Lord whom they fear are filled with all good things, he then directs his teaching to all who have become His children, saying:
1:5653
Come, children, listen to me.
1:5654
Now the children of the wise man are those who hasten toward wisdom; the children of the holy one are those who wish to be sanctified; those who set right righteousness are children of Him who is the first Righteous One.
1:5655
For it was said by us at the beginning of the psalm that it can also be uttered in the person of the Savior, according to His humanity.
1:5656
And the children of the Savior are those who take care for virtue, those who hasten to take up the knowledge of the truth.
1:5657
He calls them, then, though they are far off — not that they should be moved from place to place and come by a change of location, but from disposition to disposition, from a lesser state to a greater and more perfect one.
1:5658
And these children, to whom He addresses His word, can be babes in Christ, having a fear that is not the perfect fear, not the one that makes men free from want, but the one that produces abstinence from vice in practice — the fear of punishment.
1:5659
For such ones are children, being still imperfect.
1:5660
For since he who fears the Lord is lacking in nothing, these too are not free from want, since they do not have the perfect love which casts out the aforementioned fear — the love that is nothing other than the essence of participation in God.
1:5661
And just as he who partakes of righteousness is righteous, so he who has drawn near to this love and has become one with it is a child of wisdom, a son of love.
1:5662
Who is the man that desires life? When they were in the lesser fear — the one that brings punishment and terrifies with punishment so that one may not sin — they were a multitude.
1:5663
But when they finally hasten to draw near to Him who calls, that they may be taught the fear of God, then the things proclaimed are proclaimed as to one:
1:5664
For being fitted together in the same mind and the same judgment, and each one having been joined to the Lord and having become one spirit with Him, they cast off the multitude.
1:5665
For multitude — especially that which pertains to the soul and the inner man — comes about either from opposition or from difference according to more and less.
1:5666
If all who are called have virtue, yet do not have it in the same measure, there is a multitude.
1:5667
And yet this is not the multitude that arises from opposition.
1:5668
But whenever they also have contrary perceptions, they turn out to be many because of the vice that is present.
1:5669
For vice is not unifying, but rather divisive.
1:5670
We speak, at any rate, of the mutual accompaniment of the virtues, but not of the vices.
1:5671
It is impossible for vices to follow consistently upon one another, for they contain excesses and deficiencies.
1:5672
For there are excesses and deficiencies,
1:5673
and the excesses and deficiencies are contraries.
1:5674
All, therefore, who take up virtue in its perfection are one, and they become one in relation to God.
1:5675
So then, all who believe according to the right faith at once have one heart and one soul, while the wicked do not possess this.
1:5676
He therefore calls some men double-minded as well.
1:5677
It is only to man, then, that he addresses his word.
1:5678
But man is one according to his essence.
1:5679
For even though men come to be diverse and many, they possess their multiplicity from the qualities that supervene upon them.
1:5680
但按那作為第一底層、能承受諸品質者而言,他們乃是一;
Yet according to the first underlying subject, which is receptive of the qualities, they are one;
1:5681
for all are of one and the same substance.
1:5682
It belongs, then, to man to long for life—to the man who preserves what is according to the image.
1:5683
A lust-driven stallion does not long for life.
1:5684
「誰是那人?」——這既非罕見之事,也非不可能之事;
'Who is the man?'—this is neither something rare nor something impossible;
1:5685
it refers to the individually-qualified being whom we call an atom (an individual), so that the meaning is this:
1:5686
if any man is such a one, let him come and learn the fear of God.
1:5687
'Desiring to see good days? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips that they speak no guile.'
1:5688
在渴慕生命與學習敬畏神之後,立時便隨之而來的,就是進入美好的日子;
Immediately upon the longing for life and the learning of the fear of God there follows the coming to be in good days;
1:5689
因為我們並不像某些人那樣愚昧,以為身體的安逸和圍繞我們的財富能使日子美好;
for we are not so foolish as some, as to suppose that the body's ease and the wealth that flows around us make our days good;
1:5690
'Honour your father and your mother, that it may be well with you and that you may be long-lived upon the good land which the Lord your God gives you.'
1:5691
你若把這話理解為指這現今的地土,並指那些按字面淺意而言的父母,這話便不真了;
If you take this to refer to this present earth and to those who are parents according to the obvious sense, it proves false;
1:5692
it is not spoken about the present land, of which it says 'which he gives you.'
1:5693
'Keep your tongue from evil.'
1:5694
I call you to learn the fear of the Lord, so that, having learned it, you may become holy, complete, lacking in no single virtue.
1:5695
Come, therefore, that you may keep your tongue from evil.
1:5696
Let the tongue of the inner man no longer hold evil.
1:5697
And then a man comes to be wholly outside of it, whenever he holds the good and brings it forth.
1:5698
在舌頭止住不出惡言之後,隨之而來的,便是嘴唇不再說詭詐,一切假冒偽善的做作也同樣止息了;
And upon the keeping of the tongue from evil there follows also that the lips speak guile no longer; and the acting of a part—any hypocrisy—is likewise stilled;
1:5699
for there is one who deals deceitfully in order to work evil.
1:5700
'Their tongue is a wounding arrow, deceitful are the words of their mouth.'
1:5701
These are they who come from the heresies, who stand at the head of impiety.
1:5702
Now someone might say, with regard to the text, that:
1:5703
since at that very time, when we were saying this, all had run headlong into evil, so that dirges were now sung over them—it was to such men that he was speaking:
1:5704
因為他並沒有說「我的每一位弟兄」或「我們的每一位弟兄」,就是眾聖徒,乃是說那些甘願以一位為父的人,就是那因願意行魔鬼私慾而從魔鬼所生的人;
For he did not say 'each of my brothers' or 'each of our brothers'—that is, of the saints—but of those who willed to have one father, of those begotten of the devil through willing to do his desires;
1:5705
'for you are of your father the devil, and you will to do the desires of the devil.'
1:5706
Concerning such brothers, then—those begotten on behalf of the father, the evil one—he says:
1:5707
'Every brother will utterly supplant with the heel;'
1:5708
因為他們的父原是這樣的一位;
for indeed their father is such a one;
1:5709
by guile he brought all under himself, and he leads away those who follow him in his wickedness.
1:5710
'And every such friend will deal treacherously.'
1:5711
He is not speaking about those who are truly friends.
1:5712
Jesus says to his disciples that:
1:5713
and he has given the reason:
1:5714
'because all that is the Father's I have made known to you.'
1:5715
None of these friends will deal treacherously.
