然後經文說,凡親近神、盡心、盡性、盡力愛祂的人,便成為愛本身;
Then it says that whoever draws near to God and loves Him with all his heart and with all his soul and strength becomes love itself;
1:6029
for what is said next concerning love is this:
1:6030
'Love is not puffed up, is not boastful, does not behave unseemly, does not reckon the evil; it bears all things, believes all things, endures all things.' Are the things said here about love not proper to virtue? For I do not say that virtue endures, or bears, or believes.
1:6031
He named the one who possesses love 'love' by the same name.
1:6032
So too those who have obtained righteousness, out of the sin that was made on our behalf, become the righteousness of God — no longer simply 'righteous men of God,' but 'the righteousness of God.'
1:6033
It signifies an intensification of perfection and of progress.
1:6034
Many optative expressions in Scripture are uttered in the imperative form — and perhaps this is so among other writers as well.
1:6035
And, that we may not wander far afield:
1:6036
'Hallowed be Thy name,' which means:
1:6037
'Let the deceitful lips be made dumb' — that is, 'may they be made dumb' — the lips that speak iniquity against the righteous man.
1:6038
Does he pray to Him? — To Him, yes.
1:6039
If I want to receive something from another, and I speak to another besides God, I would not be praying to Him, but rather to God, that He might give us such a helper, that He might bring such a champion into our midst on our behalf.
1:6040
'Grant my request' — I send up a prayer concerning prayer.
1:6041
「耶和華啊,求你應允我,因為我曾向你呼求」;
'Hear me, O Lord, for I have cried unto Thee';
1:6042
我又為禱告而獻上禱告;
and I send up a prayer concerning prayer;
1:6043
for since even the hearing of a prayer requires the co-working of God, I call upon Him again through prayer as my fellow-worker, that He may fulfill my prayer and hearken to it.
1:6044
This very thing I entreat: that Thou rise up to my help — not unarmed, but having taken up a weapon.
1:6045
「求你接納我的身體與靈魂」;
'Take my body and my soul';
1:6046
for through these Thou wilt be able to help me.
1:6047
Often a physician of great stature is unable to treat small ailments or lowly men.
1:6048
Sometimes, therefore, he prepares one of his disciples — of the more lowly and far inferior to himself — so that this one may be able to approach such a patient and heal him.
1:6049
To take up weapon and shield, therefore, is to take up manhood, to receive the form of a servant.
1:6050
And it is customary that many such things come to pass.
1:6051
If He were to set out to help me as God, the help would overpass me.
1:6052
'Having become man, help me.'
1:6053
'Gird Thy sword upon Thy thigh, O Mighty One, in Thy comeliness and in Thy beauty.'
1:6054
你有威嚴,也有榮美;
Thou hast comeliness and beauty;
1:6055
for Thou didst commit no sin, neither didst Thou know it.
1:6056
Gird, therefore, Thy sword upon Thy thigh.
1:6057
The word 'thigh' often signifies the matters of generation, as when it says:
1:6058
'Every thigh shall be defiled with wetness' — decently and becomingly it signifies through 'the thigh' the organs that serve generation.
1:6059
For this reason also Abraham, when sending his servant to seek the betrothal of Rebecca, said:
1:6060
「請你把手放在我大腿底下,我要叫你起誓」;
'Put thy hand under my thigh, and I will make thee swear';
1:6061
for since he was about to take a virgin and lead her from a far place to a far place, he necessarily secured her chastity.
1:6062
Since from my loins is to come forth He who comes for the salvation of all, put thy hand there, and I will make thee swear.
1:6063
And Scripture indeed names many such things with reverence.
1:6064
Concerning the dragon — that is, the devil — it says:
1:6065
'Behold, his strength is in his loins, and his power is in the navel of his belly.'
1:6066
In the case of the male it named the 'loins,' but in the case of the woman it reverently called that organ 'the navel of the belly.'
1:6067
From the neighbouring parts it indicated that of which it forbade the use.
1:6068
'Draw out Thy sword and shut off the way against those who pursue me.'
1:6069
'Multiply the sword' — give us the sword to wield against our foes.
1:6070
And the living Word of God is the sword.
1:6071
And again, the utterance of the Spirit:
1:6072
'And the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.'
1:6073
'To pour out' always signifies abundance, as when it says:
1:6074
'I will pour out of My Spirit upon all flesh' — by this expression it signifies the abundant gift and rich supply.
1:6075
'The love of God has been poured out in our hearts.'
1:6076
'Thy name is as ointment poured forth.'
1:6077
The ointment that is poured forth comes outside its containing vessel and sends forth its fragrance to the greatest distance.
1:6078
When, therefore, the Saviour was in Israel alone — for in Israel His name was great — His name was, as it were, within a vessel.
1:6079
But when His name had become wondrous in all the earth, and that word was fulfilled:
1:6080
'As is Thy name, O God, so also is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth' — it became as ointment poured forth.
1:6081
This expression, therefore, signifies an abundant supply.
1:6082
「求你使我們各人都成為佩刀的;傾倒你的刀」;
'Make each one of us a sword-bearer; pour out Thy sword';
1:6083
因為那時你便攔阻那些追逼我們的人;
for then dost Thou shut off the way against those who pursue us;
1:6084
for henceforth we become men-at-arms, we approach them sword in hand — not that I might slay, but that I might suffer no harm.
1:6085
'Shut off'? — 'Shut off' signifies many things, but chiefly the drawing-together, as it were, of a conclusion, which checks the impulse of one who wishes to play the sophist; this becomes a 'closing-in.'
1:6086
Thus those who dispute are wont to say, 'I shut him up.'
1:6087
It also signifies something else, as it stands in the philosophy of Paul:
1:6088
and note indeed the sequence of the expression:
1:6089
那些從外邦(希臘人)中信主的人,正緊逼那些信了救主的猶太人;
those who had believed from among the Greeks were pressing hard upon the Jews who had believed in the Saviour;
1:6090
and formerly, in turn, the Jews were hindering the Gentiles from being called unto salvation.
1:6091
Do you take up unto salvation those from accursed fathers, from idolaters, from polytheists? He has therefore made a shutting-up together; He has convicted both parties.
1:6092
And one may make use of such an image as this:
1:6093
Let someone have a son who remains with him, and another who has been cast out because of a wickedness committed beforehand.
1:6094
If, when the one who was cast out has repented, the father wishes to receive him back, the son who remained behind objects, saying:
1:6095
"Is this fellow to become a joint-heir with me? He did such and such things."
1:6096
The father then convicts that one too for other sins, saying:
1:6097
"It is not on this account that this one is barred from the inheritance."
1:6098
此後他就不再反駁了;
And thereafter he no longer contradicts;
1:6099
for this one too was shut up together—that is, he was shut up together under the convictions—and so was that other one.
1:6100
因此,為要憐憫眾人,祂才這樣行;
In order, therefore, that He might have mercy upon all, He did this;
1:6101
for it was not in order to prove them to be such men that He brought in the convictions, but that He might restrain each of them from the other.
1:6102
因為希臘人不再因猶太人把十字架加於救主身上而踐踏猶太人,猶太人也不再踐踏希臘人;
For neither does the Greek any longer trample upon the Jews on account of the cross which was brought by them against the Saviour, nor do those Jews trample upon these Greeks;
1:6103
for all were found to be under sin.
1:6104
「因為正如你們從前不順從神——你們這些希臘人(即使如今你們已接受了福音,並立志敬拜神,然而你們從前也曾投擲石頭)——如今卻因這些人的不順從而得了自由(若不是以色列曾不順從,你們便不會有救恩;
"For just as you once disobeyed God—you Greeks (even if now you have received the Gospel and have set yourselves to worship God, yet once you also cast stones)—but now you have been set free by the disobedience of these (for had Israel not been disobedient, you would not have had salvation;
1:6105
for they contradicted and hindered)—so also," he says, "these, the Jews, disobeyed the mercy shown to you, in order that they too might be set free."
1:6106
Then, as it were a conclusion, he brought in:
1:6107
"For God shut up all men in disobedience, that He might have mercy upon all."
1:6108
"O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
1:6109
How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!
1:6110
For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counsellor?"—the counsellor of Him who shut up all men in disobedience. Now the "shutting-up" is taken thus with regard to enemies: when every way of assailing and grievously harming is taken away from them.
1:6111
For someone is shut up together in this manner.
1:6112
As it were by way of syllogism he reasoned the Jew together, saying that:
1:6113
「你不要責怪外邦人蒙召這事;
"Do not blame the calling of the Gentiles;
1:6114
for you too have done the very same things."
1:6115
Again, the Greeks who trample upon the Jews and say, "the Lord-slayers" and such things—
1:6116
"you too were once disobedient, you were idolaters."
1:6117
"Say to my soul, 'I am your salvation.'"
1:6118
"Say, O God, effectively to the soul that:
1:6119
'I am the salvation'—whether when You save, or when You bring all things to bear upon my soul unto its salvation, guiding it as a stranger." "Let those who seek my soul be put to shame and confounded."
1:6120
These are they who do wrong, these are they who make war, concerning whom he said:
1:6121
"Judge those who wrong me, make war upon those who make war upon me."
1:6122
"Let them be put to shame," he says, "and be confounded."
1:6123
他們心中所生的不可能是憤怒,而是為著他們所行之事而生的羞愧;
It is not possible for anger to arise in them, but rather shame at the things they do;
1:6124
at any rate, those who have come to recognize that they have fallen into shame say:
1:6125
"We have lain down in our shame, and our dishonour has covered us."
1:6126
This belongs to those who have recognized that they have come under shame and that they have been hidden away from dishonour.
1:6127
Now this shame and dishonour had come to be from sin.
1:6128
Something of this kind He also says in Ezekiel to one who behaves insolently and shamelessly:
1:6129
"Be ashamed, and bear your dishonour."
1:6130
As if someone, by way of supposition, were condemned to serve at public works, such as in a bath-house or in a mine, and were to be proud of this, we say to him:
1:6131
"Be ashamed; know that you are in dishonour."
1:6132
Is the shame then that of Adam?—for surely not all shame is of the same kind.
1:6133
Many are glorified in things over which they ought to sink down and hide themselves and seem to behave disgracefully.
1:6134
"Whose god is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things."
1:6135
In the things over which they ought to be ashamed, in these they speak boldly; and we see such things by nature and among men.
1:6136
But he who awaits a Saviour, the God-Word, knowing that by Him they are transfigured into something more glorious and are made conformed to the body which He Himself had, no longer takes pride in the works of shame.
1:6137
"Let those who devise evils against me be turned back and put to shame."
1:6138
The expression "backward" is used variously in different places of Scripture.
1:6139
To be turned back "backward" carries a note of blame.
1:6140
At any rate, the wife of Lot, as she was going out from that region of destruction, heard:
1:6141
"Do not look round backward, do not set your inclination upon the things you have left behind."
1:6142
Again, in other passages it is said that:
1:6143
"Let my enemies be turned backward."
1:6144
Let them be turned back to their own "backward," so that they may no longer drive along the same way, the way of enemies.
1:6145
"No one who has put his hand to the plough and turned back backward..."
1:6146
這裡並沒有說「回顧甚麼」,只是單單說「向後」;
It was not said, "of anything," but simply "backward";
1:6147
for whenever the ploughman turns, he breaks the straight furrow.
1:6148
And the breaking of the straight line hinders the work.
1:6149
Now someone is said to turn himself backward, in one sense laudably, in another sense blameworthily.
1:6150
If he is hastening to accomplish the divine way and turns aside, this turning—the being turned backward—is blameworthy.
1:6151
But if someone is rushing towards wickedness and is checked by words of repentance and turns back, this turning, which comes about from repentance, is laudable.
1:6152
Since they are driving on towards wickedness and their eagerness is to do me harm, let them be turned back from this purpose, backward.
1:6153
因此,無論從哪一面說,他們都謀算加害於我;
In either way, then, they devise evils against me;
1:6154
when they wish to entangle me in sin, they devise evils against me; when, plotting, they wish to bring some harmful thing upon me, again they devise evil against me.
1:6155
The two elders who raged against Susanna did both things:
1:6156
they devised an evil, wishing to lead her into adultery.
1:6157
Having failed in this, they devised the other kind of evils: to destroy her, that she should be stoned.
1:6158
Understand the same things also concerning Joseph and the Egyptian woman;
1:6159
for she too devised the evil of fornication, into which she wished to drag him down.
1:6160
Nevertheless, having failed in this, she attempted the other manner of evils, uttering a false accusation against him, by means of which he who seemed to be his master was set in motion as against one who deserved punishment.
1:6161
Let them be like dust before the face of the wind.
1:6162
This is also said in the first Psalm:
1:6163
'Not so are the ungodly, not so; but rather they are like the dust which the wind drives away from the face of the earth.'
1:6164
這顯明他們的卑微,與其說是在乎他們的本質,不如說是在乎他們的心志;
This shows their worthlessness—not so much in respect of their substance as of their disposition;
1:6165
for those who are minded on earthly things, and who have become wholly of the flesh and of its members, are dust, having no firm footing, no secure standing-place.
1:6166
A slight wind, then, moves them.
1:6167
And this wind can be either affliction or a deceitful word.
1:6168
So indeed some are carried about by every deceitful wind of teaching, by the sleight of those who advocate that crafty doctrine of men who practise it.
1:6169
And let the angel of the Lord press hard upon them.
1:6170
They have an angel of the Lord pressing hard upon them.
1:6171
在前一篇詩篇中,「主的使者在敬畏他的人四圍安營,搭救他們」;
In the preceding Psalm, 'the angel of the Lord encamps round about those who fear him, and delivered them';
1:6172
but here the angel of the Lord presses hard upon them, being a certain chastiser sent down to punish them.
1:6173
然而,也可以按著讚許的意思來理解這使者,就是那在敬畏主的人四圍安營的;
It is possible, however, also to take the angel in a laudable sense, as the one who encamps round about those who fear the Lord;
1:6174
for he who uses reproofs, who persuades the sinner to withdraw from what he deems pleasant, presses hard upon the sinner.
1:6175
Let their way be darkness and a slippery place.
1:6176
Their own way, not the way of God, not the way of virtue, not the way of God's commandments, as it is said:
1:6177
the way in which they pride themselves, in which they suppose they run in the light—
1:6178
願他們認清自己的道路是何等的道路;願他們失足;
let them come to know what sort of way theirs is; let them slip and fall;
1:6179
for this fall is a fortunate one.
1:6180
Just as he who forsakes running the straight way falls into great evil, so he who hastens to run toward evil, when he slips and falls, takes the beginning of repentance.
1:6181
And let the angel of the Lord pursue them.
1:6182
As I said, in both ways—either reproving and rebuking, or chastising them.
1:6183
For without cause they hid for me the destruction of their snare.
1:6184
邪惡常被稱為「敗壞」;
Wickedness is often called 'destruction';
1:6185
for it destroys the truth, makes the inner man evil out of good, unjust out of just, ungodly out of godly.
1:6186
And that wickedness is called 'corruption'—
1:6187
'Evil communications,' he says, 'corrupt good manners.'
1:6188
This corruption—for it is surely not bodily, of the members—corrupts the manners.
1:6189
The corruption of one's manners is moral wickedness.
1:6190
Evil communications are deceitful communications.
1:6191
And that I may make use of the image introduced in the Proverbs—of the harlot, that is, false opinion or licentiousness:
1:6192
那淫婦敗壞了那少年人的善行;
the harlot woman corrupted the good manners of that young man;
1:6193
for she brought to bear upon him certain sophistical arguments:
1:6194
'I have a peace-offering; today I pay my vows'—punctuate the 'today' wherever you wish—
1:6195
'therefore I came out to meet you.'
1:6196
It was not that she might pay her vows that she came out, but because she desired him.
1:6197
For without cause they hid for me the destruction of their snare.
1:6198
Many errors and false notions arise for those unable to distinguish homonyms.
1:6199
「敗壞」與「毀壞」這詞在聖經中有許多意思;
The word 'destruction' and 'corruption' signifies many things in Scripture;
1:6200
'If anyone,' he says, 'destroys the temple of God, him God will destroy.'
1:6201
在同一句話裡,含有「毀壞」的兩種意思;
In this very same expression two significations of 'corruption' are contained;
1:6202
若有人藉罪毀壞神的殿——他所說的「殿」乃是指身體;
if anyone corrupts the temple of God through sin—by 'temple' he means the body;
1:6203
'for your bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, which you have of God.'
1:6204
Therefore all wickedness is corruption.
1:6205
And the particular species of wickedness is called corruption in a more proper sense—the loss of virginity.
1:6206
Thus indeed we say that the virgin has been corrupted, and that the boy who has just tasted of sensual pleasures has been corrupted.
1:6207
然而,無論是邪惡的類被稱為敗壞,還是邪惡的種被稱為敗壞,二者都歸於一個意思之下;
Yet whether the genus of wickedness be called corruption, or the species, they are brought under one signification;
1:6208
for such corruption destroys and drags down both the soul and the body.
1:6209
'Because of uncleanness you were destroyed with destruction.'
1:6210
And uncleanness of soul is wickedness.
1:6211
It is said, then, in the Proverbs concerning a certain worthless man that:
1:6212
he is crushed because of uncleanness of soul.
1:6213
And in the Lamentations of Jeremiah it is said:
1:6214
'Her uncleanness is upon her feet'—which means:
1:6215
她的行徑就是污穢;
her walk is uncleanness;
1:6216
for she treads upon the forbidden way, the way of death, the evil way.
1:6217
Because of uncleanness, then, you were destroyed with destruction.
1:6218
And uncleanness of soul is wickedness, as has been said, according to the twofold manner of the aforementioned corruption—both according to the genus and according to the species of wickedness, that is, both according to licentiousness and according to the other species of wickedness.
1:6219
'Because of uncleanness you were destroyed with destruction'—it is also possible to take this 'because of uncleanness you were destroyed with destruction' in the other signification of 'corruption':
1:6220
if anyone destroys the temple of God, him God will destroy.
1:6221
And God 'destroys' in that he tests.
1:6222
又正如「滅亡」這詞,當論到靈魂時,有兩種用法;
And just as the word 'destruction,' when taken with reference to the soul, is used in two ways;
1:6223
因為我們說,那犯罪的被稱為「滅亡」,那受刑罰的也被稱為「滅亡」;
for we say that the one who sins is called 'perdition,' and that the one who is punished is called 'perdition';
1:6224
'Fear, then, him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.'
1:6225
Here perdition is chastisement, which is also called destruction.
1:6226
因為污穢,你們就被敗壞所毀壞;
Because of uncleanness you were destroyed with destruction;
1:6227
for this reason you have fallen under chastisement, because you loved to be unclean, because you hastened to have uncleanness of soul.
1:6228
而這污穢與潔淨相反,潔淨臨到人心時,便帶來神的同在與顯現;
And this uncleanness is contrary to purity, which, when it comes upon the heart, brings the presence and manifestation of God;
1:6229
'for blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.'
1:6230
Without cause, then, they hid for me, wishing to destroy me, to drag me down into wickedness, or even to plot against me and lead me into affliction.
1:6231
But in either case they act to no purpose — for here 'gratuitously' signifies 'in vain' — namely, because I have furnished no cause; and so the man who has resolved rather to be wronged and to suffer ill than to do the contrary will say:
1:6232
Those who surround me for my destruction do this in vain, since God has become my helper; or else:
1:6233
They act gratuitously, since I have furnished no cause.
1:6234
For instance, if Susanna had been put to death after being falsely accused by the elders, she would have said:
1:6235
Gratuitously they plotted against me, since I gave no cause.
1:6236
Joseph too would have said these things, and so would the disciples of Christ say them when they are persecuted, put to death, and reproached for the sake of the name of Christ.
1:6237
For if one of the Christians is plotted against for no other reason than that he is a Christian, those who plot against him do so gratuitously.
1:6238
For sometimes certain people set themselves against Christians and, wishing to harm them, find a pretext arising from the Christians themselves.
1:6239
In vain have they reproached my soul.
1:6240
For neither did I do anything to give cause for reproach.
1:6241
But it was also said according to another meaning — that the words 'gratuitously, since I have furnished no cause' refer to suffering for the sake of the name of Christ and for no other reason.
1:6242
Do not acquire the reproaches of wicked men.
1:6243
'Do not acquire' — since it lies within our power to acquire it.
1:6244
But if, though we have not acquired them, certain people surround us with reproaches, they reproach our soul in vain.
1:6245
Will you not say that Jezebel and those who conspired with her reproached Naboth in vain, and gratuitously concealed against him the destruction of their snare? For it says:
1:6246
'The destruction of their snare' — it calls them 'their' snares, not those in which they themselves are ensnared, but those in which they wish to ensnare others.
1:6247
The staged drama contrived against Susanna by the elders was their snare — not the one in which they themselves are ensnared, but the one by which they wished to ensnare her and subject her to punishment and shame.
1:6248
Let a snare come upon them which they do not know.
1:6249
Those who have the power to devise machinations against certain people and who plot against them in vain never set before their eyes that they may be caught by the very things they themselves have contrived.
1:6250
For instance, he who digs a pit for his neighbor will fall into it.
1:6251
They do not at all reckon that they themselves fall into the pit, since they had not dug it for that end.
1:6252
So they did not know that the snare was coming upon them which they were preparing for another, that they might surround and entrap him.
1:6253
'Which they do not know,' then — which they did not have before their eyes, since they were not even contriving it.
1:6254
And let the net which they hid catch them.
1:6255
That they might escape the notice of others and, unforeseen, hunt them down.
1:6256
They dug a pit before my face, and they themselves fell into it.
1:6257
And they shall fall into the very snare which is theirs.
1:6258
In this very snare which they contrived for others, they shall fall.
1:6259
Upon the downfall of others they themselves fell, by such contrivances as certain people make and then bring upon themselves.
1:6260
It comes about within a certain interweaving of providence.
1:6261
The doctrine concerning providence has great intricacy, even if it is unknown to many — not to say to all.
1:6262
But my soul shall rejoice in the Lord.
1:6263
Do to him as he devised wickedly to do to his neighbor.
1:6264
When these things have come to pass, the soul will rejoice, knowing that it has suffered nothing.
1:6265
Rejoicing over them? No — but marveling at providence and exulting that he was not ensnared.
1:6266
Just as the soul of Susanna rejoiced, not because the elders were condemned, but because she herself was acquitted of the charge.
1:6267
That other outcome came about incidentally.
1:6268
And so the saints, when they are in tribulation, pray for this one thing alone:
1:6269
Let us not be overcome by the tribulation — not, indeed, against those who have surrounded us with the tribulation.
1:6270
For they receive it as a contest, not as a punishment.
1:6271
And he who receives it as a contest is not so set against his adversaries as to wish them no longer to exist.
1:6272
Lead us not into temptation.
1:6273
Strike those who tempt us.
1:6274
I was once asked how the marriage of the saints took place without pleasure — is it not that marriage is honorable and the bed undefiled? — and I said that the saints came together with their wives only at that time when it was the season for conception.
1:6275
After conception they do not touch them.
1:6276
So I said that their purpose was not pleasure, which they sought to pursue, but to serve the begetting of children.
1:6277
Pleasure too is of necessity joined with it; yet it is not for its sake that they come together.
1:6278
And in the matter of food the same thing occurs:
1:6279
One takes nourishment for no other reason than to satisfy his appetite, for the sake of being filled.
1:6280
But if it happens that the things eaten are also pleasant, he does not choose them on that account, because they are pleasant.
1:6281
And this happens especially in the case of medical remedies:
1:6282
Often the remedy is pleasant, but he did not administer it on account of the pleasure.
1:6283
Indeed, even if it be unpleasant, he applies it, since he does so for the sake of health and of what is beneficial.
1:6284
And so, if ever those who set upon a righteous man suffer the same things, he rejoices that he was not caught by them.
1:6285
As for the rest, let it follow — even if they have suffered something.
1:6286
But I wonder whether this is so in the case of a perfect saint.
1:6287
In the case of one who is still advancing, it is possible to be glad that those who were eager to do him harm have themselves suffered something; but not in the case of the perfect.
1:6288
What is the difference between 'upon the Lord' and 'in the Lord'? He who takes the prepositions without close scrutiny will say there is no difference.
1:6289
For instance, someone rejoices, let us say, over his child if he is in health.
1:6290
He rejoices in the drinking of wine.
1:6291
Each case has a different cause.
1:6292
Let us take the demonstration from another saying:
1:6293
Everyone, he says, who confesses in me before men — he did not say 'upon me' — I also will confess him.
1:6294
But if the preposition had been set down simply, the 'in' would also have been placed in the case of denial:
1:6295
And everyone who denies in me, I too will deny in him.
1:6296
But it was impossible for one who denies to be in Christ — the one who denies him, or that Christ, who is in him, should be denied.
1:6297
The one who denies, then, is severed from him whom he denies.
1:6298
He who denies God is severed from God, and God is separated far from him.
1:6299
But he who confesses him is in him — lest you should take the confession as belonging to the voice alone:
1:6300
For those who honor with their lips do indeed confess, but they are not in him.
1:6301
Since, then, our union with God is of various kinds, at one time we are said to rejoice over Him as over a Saviour, as over a benefactor, as over a general who has won the victory for us; at another time we rejoice in Him as in wisdom, as in sanctification, as in righteousness.
1:6302
He, therefore, who confesses Christ is in Him.
1:6303
And take yet another example.
1:6304
One who professes knowledge cannot profess it in any other way except by knowing it.
1:6305
Is it so that it be as in substance, or also as in quality? — For the present let these matters be set aside.
1:6306
For now the inquiry concerns the difference of the prepositions.
1:6307
Whether one participates by substance or by quality — let that be for another occasion.
1:6308
For God is not one thing when He becomes Father of the righteous, and another when He is their Maker, and yet another when He is their King — rather it is by way of conception (that these are distinguished).
1:6309
From the things we know we derive these conceptions, since in that realm it is not possible to separate one conception from another.
1:6310
God is light, He is also sanctification and righteousness and wisdom, and it is not possible to sever one mode of existence from another.
1:6311
But relation from relation we do separate.
1:6312
Let there be a man who is father and master and teacher and ruler.
1:6313
For surely he is not at variance with himself.
1:6314
But if you hear that he is a ruler in relation to those ruled, and a king in relation to those governed, and a father in relation to the one begotten, and a master in relation to the slave, and a physician in relation to the one healed, and a teacher in relation to the one learning — he is not at variance with himself, but it is the relation, referred now to these persons and now to those, that produces the difference.
1:6315
Just, then, as it happens that the same man is both father and teacher and the rest, so too it happens that the same disciple is at once the one ruled and the one learning.
1:6316
He shall delight in His salvation.
1:6317
By 'salvation' (sōtērion) he here means 'salvation' (sōtēria).
1:6318
For in many places sōtērion signifies sōtēria (salvation).
1:6319
But there are times when even the Author of salvation is so called, as when it says:
1:6320
'All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God,' meaning the Saviour.
1:6321
The soul, then, delights in the salvation.
1:6322
它不從別處尋求救恩,只從神自己、從那以永遠的救恩施行拯救的主那裡尋求;
It does not seek salvation from any other source than from God Himself, from Him who saves with an eternal salvation.
1:6323
For Israel is saved by the Lord with an everlasting salvation.
1:6324
'All my bones shall say, O Lord, Lord, who is like unto Thee?' The first theology is to know what the holiness of God is, and who is able to be made like Him or who is not able.
1:6325
He therefore attaches this theology and this knowledge of God to his own bones, from which it is evident that he is not speaking of these bones of his — those which hold together the other members of the body and the flesh and the sinews — but of the vigorous powers, which we have often said are the bones of the inner man.
1:6326
'All my bones, then, shall say':
1:6327
My vigorous convictions, my vigorous movements, in so far as I know and understand, confess concerning God that none of created things is like unto Him.
1:6328
The word 'who' — how (is it used)? — It is used of the impossible, as in:
1:6329
「神啊,誰能與你相似呢?」但論到聖子,我們卻不作這樣的領會;
'O God, who shall be made like unto Thee?' In the case of the Son we do not take this thus;
1:6330
for it is not with regard to a future likeness that He has it, but being the express image of the substance He is eternally like (the Father).
1:6331
Both senses, then, can be taken.
1:6332
若就本質上的相似而言,沒有一個能與祂相似;
If it be with regard to essential likeness, none is made like unto Him.
1:6333
But if it be with regard to likeness in virtue and holiness, rare is the one who is made like unto Him.
1:6334
Delivering the poor from the hand of them that are stronger than he.
1:6335
If the likeness be taken with regard to this action, it signifies the rare.
1:6336
God delivers the poor and needy from the hand of them that are stronger than he.
1:6337
And this holds also in the case of men — such as rulers, wealthy powers, and even the devil himself.
1:6338
God alone, then, delivers from these.
1:6339
但正如我所說,若人是從那較弱的勢力中施行搭救,那麼連那稀有者(即凡人)也能作這事;
But if, as I said, one delivers from things that are less mighty, then even the rare (i.e. an ordinary man) can do this;
1:6340
for to deliver from lesser things is no great matter.
1:6341
那些惱恨蘇撒拿的人,看似比她強壯;
Those who raged against Susanna seemed to be stronger than she;
1:6342
for they were rulers and judges, while she was a secluded woman and a private person.
1:6343
And God delivered her from those who were stronger.
1:6344
Everyone who is weaker than another is, in that respect, poor — the one who cannot help himself, who is not able to succour himself and to set himself outside the surrounding predicament.
1:6345
Both the poor and the needy from those who plunder him.
1:6346
It happens most especially that with regard to the same subject a man is both poor and needy.
1:6347
他若毫無財富,便是「困苦的」;但他若靠勞碌供養自己,便是「窮乏的」;
If he is without wealth, he is 'poor'; but if he provides for himself by his toil, he is 'needy';
1:6348
If, then, you raise these things (to a higher sense), you take the 'poor' to be the man from among the Jews who came to faith, and the 'needy' to be the man who had no hope, but was even godless.
1:6349
Unjust witnesses rose up; they asked me of things that I knew not.
1:6350
The unjust witnesses ask him about things which the man against whom they wish to bear witness does not know.
1:6351
But here 'things which I knew not' means 'things of which I had no experience.'
1:6352
The term 'not to know' sometimes signifies ignorance;
1:6353
as in 'but at that time, not knowing God' — it indicates ignorance.
1:6354
But it also signifies not having had experience, as when I say:
1:6355
'Him who knew no sin' — that is, who had no experience of sin.
1:6356
In what sense, then, does He know it?
1:6357
He understands its nature.
1:6358
But He does not 'know' it in the sense of having made use of it.
1:6359
So, at any rate, it is said also of wives and, quite generally, of women, that:
1:6360
'He did not know her,' 'He knew her.'
1:6361
'And Adam knew Eve his wife.'
