In the weaving of this crown lie those stones which are built up with gold and silver upon the foundation, which is Christ.
1:322
It is plain that neither the gold nor the silver nor the stones are taken in a material sense.
1:323
And if we say it concerning each king, such as Abraham was, such as the other saints are, that:
1:324
there was a likeness and a crown of beauty, it was not bound with material stones; from such stones one is crowned.
1:325
Take, for instance, Joseph, who strove for the sake of chastity.
1:326
Chastity is a precious stone.
1:327
These crowned him, and Susanna, and the martyrs.
1:328
And since the virtues follow upon one another, and he who has one has them all, the crown that is woven is not one single stone.
1:329
'Of a precious stone, therefore, Thou hast set a crown upon his head.'
1:330
The word 'precious' belongs to the category of relatives.
1:331
These stones here—such as pearls and hyacinths and the rest—we call precious, since there are also other stones as distinguished from those.
1:332
Since, then, these great stones are the species of virtue, behold, these stones are precious, and they surpass all things that are reckoned of worth in the world.
1:333
And that the disciples are the crowns of their teachers, Paul taught:
1:334
'my joy and my crown,' addressing the church that had been made his disciple.
1:335
In that day the Lord of hosts shall be the crown of hope.
1:336
這冠冕的質料乃是萬軍之主;
The material of this crown is the Lord of hosts;
1:337
for the Lord of hosts shall be the crown of hope.
1:338
又因人在此世尚不能對神有完全的分享,唯有到那時才能成就,就是當神在萬物之中作萬物之時——它要成全,如同火在那超乎萬有者裡面,在那最終所渴慕的對象裡面——因此他稱祂為盼望的冠冕;
And since one who is here cannot yet possess perfect participation in God, but this shall come to pass then, when God becomes all in all—it is perfected as a fire in Him who is over all, in the final object of desire—for this reason he called Him a crown of hope;
1:339
for if we shall know Him then, when we see Him as He is, and then we shall see Him as He is when we attain to the end—this crown is a crown of hope.
1:340
For the present it is of hope, it is a thing awaited.
1:341
He asked life of Thee, and Thou gavest it him.
1:342
We were saying that the Saviour, according to His manhood—and when I say 'according to the manhood,' do not separate Him from the Word—is an Advocate with the Father.
1:343
For neither is the Word apart from the Man, nor the Man apart from the Word, but He Himself, blended of both, becomes an Advocate, and ever living to make intercession for them, He pleads on their behalf.
1:344
He asks, then, for that life which He wills to be quickened into being.
1:345
生命的賜予乃是藉著祂而成的;
And through Him the quickening comes to pass;
1:346
for having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit.
1:347
耶穌的魂本身並非生命,乃是從那按量賜予、施恩賜下「活」的神那裡得著存活;
And the soul of Jesus is not itself Life, but has its living from God, who apportions and graciously grants the power to live;
1:348
and so too all other souls, so that each may say:
1:349
the soul holds its life according to immortality as a thing of honour.
1:350
But its living unto God it reaps from that which lies within our power, just as living unto sin, again, is from that which lies within our power.
1:351
length of days unto the age and unto the age of the age.
1:352
Again, we cannot take the length of days according to the literal sense.
1:353
He says 'unto the age' and 'unto the age of the age.'
1:354
But these days, which are given and produced by the sun, are spoken of only in this present age.
1:355
'When shall these things be, and what shall be the sign of Thy coming and of the consummation of the age?' And also:
1:356
until the consummation of this age.
1:357
And if the Scriptures speak of 'the days of the age,' they mean the days of the age.
1:358
Now this man who made the request was great, and it was not concerning some small and indifferent matter that he sent up his prayer—so that his prayer is even remembered—nor concerning these days that are bounded by the sun and moon.
1:359
These things, therefore, must be contemplated in another way.
1:360
And you will see that in the Scriptures such things often break down and appear as impossible.
1:361
'Honour,' He says, 'thy father and thy mother, that it may be well with thee and that thou mayest be long-lived upon the earth.'
1:362
But it is by no means the case that one who honours his parents always remains many years upon the earth.
1:363
Many younger persons are taken away.
1:364
It is said, at any rate, in the Wisdom of Solomon concerning such persons:
1:365
'He was caught away, lest wickedness should alter his understanding, or guile deceive his soul.'
1:366
'Being made perfect in a short time, he fulfilled long years.'
1:367
And it says that prudence is grey hair, and that the unspotted life is old age.
1:368
But if the unspotted life is old age, and this consists not of days but of virtue, then the days too must be taken in another sense.
1:369
but in order that those on whose behalf he offers up his supplication—
1:370
we have spoken concerning the life, not the common life, but that which is according to virtue.
1:371
He who knew no sin, nor committed it, nor held guile in his heart, had no deadness such as is set in contrast to the blessed life.
1:372
因此,當他求生命的時候,並不是為自己求,乃是願那生命賜給那些他為之獻上祈願的人;
Whence, when asking for life, he did not ask it for himself, but wills that it be given to those on whose behalf he brings up his petition;
1:373
for He ever lives to make intercession on behalf of those who are to have life from Him.
1:374
'He asked life of Thee, and Thou gavest it him.'
1:375
It is either the psalmist or the Holy Spirit within him that speaks to God.
1:376
And it is a great testimony when he who has sent up a prayer receives his requests.
1:377
'Thou gavest it him, therefore—length of days unto the age and unto the age of the age.'
1:378
The saints do not at all wish to have the common life prolonged in this present existence.
1:379
Indeed, 'it is far better,' he says, 'to depart and to be with Christ.'
1:380
'Woe is me, that my sojourning is prolonged!'
1:381
'I am a sojourner in the earth.'
1:382
He who is a sojourner and a stranger has as his longing and aim to depart from his sojourning, that he may dwell in the place suited to him.
1:383
As, therefore, the life here signified is not the common life—which even ungodly men and irrational animals live—so neither does he mean by 'length of days' a life of many years, but rather a length of days, just as he who honours his parents shall be long-lived and of many days.
1:384
And in Deuteronomy also it is said:
1:385
'This is thy life and this is the length of thy days: to love me, the Lord thy God, with all thy heart and with all thy soul.'
1:386
Behold, the length of days too is that which loves Him with all the soul and with all the strength and with all longing.
1:387
'length of days, therefore, unto the age.'
1:388
It is possible to take these words concerning the blessed life in this manner:
1:389
for there is a life which is identical with the knowledge concerning God.
1:390
'And this is eternal life, that they should know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent'—this life is the knowledge concerning the Father and the Son.
1:391
'He that believeth in me hath eternal life.'
1:392
He that believeth in the Saviour does not have the common life.
1:393
The ungodly are often found to be longer-lived than the diligent.
1:394
Those men long for this life of many days, inasmuch as they consider no other thing good than such a condition.
1:395
As, therefore, there is a praiseworthy life both present and to come, so also there is a length of days unto this age, that one may have great illumination, each doctrine of the truth being known and giving light.
1:396
And each practical virtue rightly accomplished is a praiseworthy day.
1:397
Since, therefore, just as here knowledge is partial and will be succeeded by perfect and complete knowledge, so also in the case of practical virtue those who from this present time have been shown righteous according to practical virtue will be diligent in another way—for again they have both a present and a future righteousness—there is a length of days unto the age that is here, not this common one, but that which is able to come to be, concerning which they say:
1:398
'This is the day which the Lord hath made.'
1:399
For in pointing it out they have spoken.
1:400
But no one points to that which is to come, rather to that which is already present and at hand.
1:401
The future, when that time comes at which it arrives, is no longer future.
1:402
Again, it too will fall under demonstration.
1:403
So then, whether you take the king, or the holy man, or Him who came forth from Mary, they do not pray concerning that life or the length of days perceptible to the senses, but concerning those things already spoken of.
1:404
They receive a long-aged life, and concerning this they send up their petition.
1:405
But the long-aged life is not the life of one age.
1:406
And take the life correspondingly to each age: at one time as introductory and preliminary, at another as intermediate, at another as perfect.
1:407
After all these aforementioned days?—Each doctrine that gives light to the soul, being illumined by the Sun of Righteousness, we have called a day.
1:408
But after these illuminations that come in the course of progress, there is a certain perfect condition of light.
1:409
It is interrupted by night; a multitude of days does not come to be.
1:410
But it is possible to take it also in this way:
1:411
Since the virtues have a connection with one another—for each one is luminous—there comes to be one length of days out of their mutual sequence, and it is not broken off.
1:412
每一項科學的定理都與其他的區分開來;
Each scientific theorem is divided off from the others;
1:413
for the man of knowledge knows many things.
1:414
For instance, as in medicine there is the surgical theorem, the dietetic; in grammar there is this or that.
1:415
當人得以完全時,他就不再把這些當作彼此分開的事物;
When someone is made perfect, he no longer has them as separate things;
1:416
for now it is possible to have the surgical part to a greater degree, but the dietetic to a lesser.
1:417
But when you set before me a perfect physician, having all the theorems perfectly and unsurpassably, they are no longer dispersed, nor do they have their difference in the matter.
1:418
Set before me a man having complete health in his body.
1:419
He no longer needs diet alone, nor surgery.
1:420
He has cast off those things for the sake of which he needed these; and for the rest he has health, which no longer produces anything else.
1:421
It is for her own sake that all these things are pursued with such zeal.
1:422
And the holding fast of her is pursued with a certain longing; for just as there are things that produce health, so also there are things that preserve it—such as exercise or such-and-such a diet.
1:423
For there are, as it were, things that produce health, and likewise things that preserve it, such as exercise or such-and-such a food.
1:424
那長久的日子乃是連綿不斷、毫無間斷的;
That long-lived day, then, is unbroken and without interruption;
1:425
for it comes at last, whenever that word is fulfilled:
1:426
'The Lord shall be to you an everlasting light,' when the sun no longer fails, nor does the rising of the moon give light to the night.
1:427
這些話並非論到那可見的發光體而說的;
These things are not spoken concerning the perceptible luminaries;
1:428
for immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give its light.
1:429
那麼,這些為此世之人所喜愛的光,將不再發光;
These lights, then, that are dear to those here below, shall give light no longer;
1:430
for the sun shall be sevenfold, and the moon shall be as the sun.
1:431
Concerning the heavens in general it has been said that they shall be changed.
1:432
And when he speaks of the heavens being changed, he also means the stars and luminaries within them—just as, if we were to speak of the earth, saying:
1:433
'All the earth worships you,' we mean those who dwell in the earth.
1:434
'Sing to the Lord, all the earth.'
1:435
'Great is his glory in your salvation.'
1:436
If we take 'glory' in its proper sense, we do not call any chance pleasant condition 'glory.'
1:437
例如,我們不把人間的官職稱為「榮耀」,也不把地位尊榮稱為「榮耀」;
For instance, we do not call human office 'glory,' nor rank or dignity;
1:438
for all these petty glories belong to small-minded and inexperienced men.
1:439
Now physicians who bring restoration to health to those they cure seem to procure glory for them—indeed the one in health is more glorified than the one who is sick—yet the glory is not great.
1:440
所以,在神的拯救中乃有極大的榮耀;
In the salvation of God, therefore, there is great glory;
1:441
for this salvation touches the mind and the soul.
1:442
And of all that is within us, the mind and the soul surpass the body, even if to some it does not seem so.
1:443
It is possible, too, to call the Savior himself 'salvation,' as it stands in many places:
1:444
'All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.'
1:445
And, 'All flesh shall see the salvation of God'—meaning every human being, or every sentient soul.
1:446
In this salvation, therefore, the glory is great.
1:447
Even if the death which he took upon himself seems dishonorable—for according to the Law 'cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree'—yet this seeming dishonor had power to receive so great a glory from the aim of salvation, because it became a salvation not of cattle, nor of men merely, but of soul and mind and spirit, as Paul writes:
1:448
'May your spirit and soul and body be kept whole.'
1:449
The seeming dishonor, therefore, is a surpassing glory.
1:450
When I was expounding the Gospel, at that passage which says:
1:451
'He who believes in me, the works that I do he also shall do, and greater works than these shall he do'—among other interpretations, this one also has been given:
1:452
倘若你按著行事者的比例來衡量,即使偉大的事也是微小的;
If you consider the proportion relative to the one who does them, even great things are small;
1:453
in relation to God they are small.
1:454
The apostles did not perform perceptible works beyond those of the Savior.
1:455
The Savior raised Lazarus, who had already been four days in death, near to dissolution, and had already come to the point of stinking.
1:456
The apostles did nothing of this kind.
1:457
Jesus brought a man blind from birth to sight.
1:458
of the Savior, these are small in comparison with his having made rational being, the heavens, and souls.
1:459
然而使徒的作為,縱然遜於救主的作為,卻被稱為比救主所行的「更大」——因為那超乎他們自身的能力;
But the works of the apostles, even though they were inferior to those of the Savior, are said to be greater—because they exceed their own power—than those which the Savior did;
1:460
for greater than these they could not do.
1:461
But Jesus both did them and always does them.
1:462
For we behold Jesus made lower because of the suffering of death.
1:463
He was made lower because of the suffering of death, yet was crowned with glory and honor.
1:464
The being made lower brought glory—and indeed brought the greatest glory.
1:465
'I reckon that the sufferings of the present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed.'
1:466
And the sufferings of Christ are those which his imitators have suffered, he himself having first suffered.
1:467
Even if it be a cross, even if it be death—if you look to the aim of salvation and to the one who saves, it is something great.
1:468
But the suffering of others is not great.
1:469
Assuredly, at any rate, there were times when they had glory, but for some the glory departed even while they were still living.
1:470
Thus, then, I have understood also that which is said in Isaiah:
1:471
'And of his peace there is no bound.'
1:472
'In his days righteousness shall spring up, and abundance of peace, until the moon be taken away.'
1:473
你當思想那已興起的平安;
Consider the peace that has sprung up;
1:474
因為它掌權直到末了;
for it holds sway until the consummation;
1:475
for the taking away of the moon signifies nothing other than the consummation, when the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall not give its light.
1:476
這平安並不在一個民族之中,也不僅在地上;
The peace is not in one nation, nor upon the earth only;
1:477
for he made peace through the blood of his cross, not for the things on earth only, but also for the things in the heavens.
1:478
'Glory and majesty you shall lay upon him.'
1:479
The glory and the majesty are laid upon him, together with this great glory which came to be in his salvation.
1:480
And majesty consists in deeds and endeavors in which what is fitting is present.
1:481
The works that arise from virtue come to pass fittingly.
1:482
然而許多事在人看來似乎是合宜地行的,其實卻並非真正合宜;
But many things seem to men to be done fittingly which are not in truth fitting;
1:483
as I have also said concerning glory, that there are ranks and petty glories which are not such as men suppose them to be, but have merely been imagined by them to be such.
1:484
So then they speak of 'majesty' in this way—meanwhile take the sense from the literal account, from the illustration:
1:485
有些是競賽的主辦者,倘若他們心胸狹隘,便會出於吝嗇的意念而削減賽事與開支,他們看似在為競賽的主持者做合宜之事,卻做得吝嗇,這等人便被稱為卑吝之人;
There are presiders over the games, and if they be small-minded, they diminish the contests and the expenditures out of a mean disposition, and they seem indeed to do what is fitting for the president of the games, yet they do it meanly, and these are called mean-spirited;
1:486
for they are not so surpassing as to be found in no way inferior in fitting conduct to the presiders over the games before them.
1:487
This, then, is called majesty—when in that which is done fittingly there is greatness.
1:488
And it is majesty most of all when the fitting thing is done not for the sake of anything else, but for its own sake.
1:489
Let me put it thus: if someone who is rich lavishes great sums upon small matters and paltry festivals, this man is not magnificent.
1:490
It is an excess of magnificence, just as we say that recklessness is an excess of courage, and superstition an excess of piety.
1:491
Suppose a man makes a banquet for his fellow gamblers and lavishes on it as much as another man does not lavish even at a wedding.
1:492
Such a man is not magnificent.
1:493
But magnificence is not exercised for the sake of vainglory.
1:494
Being led by the hand from things perceptible by the senses, let us come to the matters of which our discourse treats.
1:495
The Saviour wrought what is fitting in great things.
1:496
And the righteous man too displays what is fitting in great things.
1:497
What is greater than to save the whole world, to make peace not only among things earthly but also among things heavenly? What is greater than to accomplish that for which things heavenly, things earthly, and things beneath the earth bend the knee to the Saviour unto the glory of God the Father? This glory is magnificence, and it has kinship with comeliness.
1:498
And so concerning God himself it is said:
1:499
«The Lord reigns; he has clothed himself with comeliness.»
1:500
This comeliness and magnificence are one and the same.
1:501
Knowing sin, that it is good to abstain from sin and to possess righteousness; it is good, when reviled, not to revile in return, and not to take vengeance on those who treat us cruelly.
1:502
«When he suffered,» it says, «he did not threaten.»
1:503
Not only did he not requite like for like, but he did not even threaten.
1:504
A threat is a forewarning of things fearful.
1:505
When, however, it is no longer a forewarning but has attained its outcome, it is no longer a threat.
1:506
«Glory therefore and magnificence you will lay upon him.»
1:507
It is well said, «you will lay upon.»
1:508
This too is laid upon what already lies beneath.
1:509
For it was not now only, when he sojourned among us, that he began to place this glory and magnificence in rational beings, but at every time and everywhere, so far as was possible, he was doing this.
1:510
But the glory and magnificence that came through his sojourn among us was an addition, as for instance through the cross.
1:511
«For you will give him blessing unto ages of ages.»
1:512
It is just as we have said concerning life:
1:513
not that he himself may possess it — for he does possess it — but that those who draw near to him, those who become his disciples, may possess it.
1:514
This blessing unto ages of ages is distinguished from that which is reckoned to be a blessing among mortal things.
1:515
For that too is sometimes called a blessing:
1:516
«For in his life his soul will be blessed; he will not see light for ever.»
1:517
He will not see the light, even though now he seems to behold splendid things.
1:518
He does not have this good repute as an abiding thing.
1:519
The spiritual blessings, therefore, that are given in the heavenly places are the very same as this blessing which abides unto ages of ages.
1:520
For if anyone should regard the acquisition of wealth as a blessing, he does not possess it unto ages of ages.
1:521
For it departs together with the material life.
1:522
But it is possible to say, gracefully and in a moral sense, that:
1:523
The man who has wealth, if he so expends it as to find thereafter also glory, concerning which it says:
1:524
«Charge the rich of this age not to be high-minded,»
1:525
«laying up for themselves a foundation of good works» — the blessing of such a man abides unto ages of ages.
1:526
And the deeds done from that wealth remain indestructible.
1:527
Likewise also in the case of the other things:
1:528
If a man is glorified and blessed on account of self-control — the true self-control — he possesses it as abiding unto ages of ages.
1:529
But if anyone supposes that he is blessed on account of a hypocritical virtue, he possesses it as something that is being dissolved.
1:530
For when the truth shines forth and matters appear as they are in their nature, the blessing based on mere supposition is dissolved.
1:531
Sometimes it even brings on danger.
1:532
«You will gladden him with joy by your countenance.»
1:533
The expression seems to be ambiguous.
1:534
For one thing is signified by it:
1:535
«You will gladden him with joy by your countenance»:
1:536
by gladdening your own countenance you will gladden him also.
1:537
Or else both things gladden him:
1:538
«You will gladden him with joy, and your countenance together with you will gladden him.»
1:539
A similar expression is found also in Isaiah:
1:540
«And the Lord, the Lord, sent me, and his Spirit.»
1:541
«The Lord sent me,» and «his Spirit also sent me.»
1:542
And they say that the sending of the Saviour, according to his sojourn among us, came about both from the Father and from the Holy Spirit:
1:543
«The Spirit of the Lord will come upon you» — addressed to her who conceived him or was to bear him — «and the power of the Most High.»
1:544
He seems here to have been sent from the Father and from the Holy Spirit.
1:545
But others read it thus, and this reading is the better one:
1:546
«And the Lord, the Lord, sent me»:
1:547
«and he also sent his Spirit»:
1:548
the Father sent the Son and the Holy Spirit.
1:549
But the former interpretation says this: that the Father and the Holy Spirit sent the Son.
1:550
And each person receives an understanding suited to himself with respect to the reading, as has already been said.
1:551
And so here too there is a «countenance» of the Lord who is here spoken of.
1:552
And the Son is his image, the express character of his substance.
1:553
Concerning, then, the person taken up by the Saviour and by every righteous man, it is said that:
1:554
«Father» — and one who has beheld the express character straightway sees also him whose the character is:
1:555
«for he who has seen me has seen the Father.»
1:556
Gladness comes about from God and from his countenance.
1:557
But it is possible also to understand it thus:
1:558
«You will gladden him with joy by your countenance.»
1:559
Furthermore, it says this concerning every righteous man:
1:560
For your countenance, according to which he came to be after the image and likeness, will be revealed as his.
1:561
偶性即使可以分離,卻往往與本體共同存在;
Accidents, even if they are separable, often coexist together with the substances;
1:562
因為身體並非先被造出,然後才著上顏色;
for the body is not first created and then afterwards coloured;
1:563
it is created already coloured, and yet we say that in certain cases colour belongs to the things that come and go.
1:564
但我加上「在某些情況下」,因為在可感之物中,雪的白既不是後來加上去的,也不會離開它;
But I added 'in certain cases,' since among sensible things whiteness in snow neither comes upon it nor departs from it;
1:565
nor does wetness come upon water as something added.
1:566
既然如此,理性受造者從起初就被造為善的,它卻不像神那樣是善的;
Since, then, the rational being was made good from the beginning, it is not good in the same way that God is;
1:567
for it is good not according to its substance, but according to habit and disposition.
1:568
Even though, then, man was made according to the image and likeness, this form which he possesses is separable—capable of being cast off and taken up again.
1:569
Yet when God saves, every merely outward image will pass away,
1:570
and this true image will be displayed in the one who has been saved.
1:571
'For the king hopes in the Lord.'
1:572
This king hopes in the Lord.
1:573
He hopes that there will be salvation for those on whose behalf He came to suffer.
1:574
祂對自己所切望之事的結局並無疑惑,反而堅定不移地盼望;
He does not hold the outcome of what He earnestly pursues in doubt, but hopes unshakeably;
1:575
for in the mercy of the Most High he shall not be shaken.
1:576
His hope, therefore, does not fail.
1:577
And I offer an illustration—though perhaps it is somewhat forced:
1:578
no one hopes for what is already present.
1:579
The one who is healthy does not hope to become healthy, nor does the one who is rich hope to become rich.
1:580
Hope and expectation are one and the same.
1:581
期待是盼望的一個屬類;
Expectation is a genus of hope;
1:582
hope, at any rate, is the expectation of good things from God.
1:583
至於將來的事,有些是偶然存在的,以致可能發生也可能不發生,如那些或此或彼碰巧而成的事;另有一些則必然要成就;
Now of things to come, some have a contingent existence, so that they are able either to happen or not to happen, like those that fall out one way or another, while others will certainly come to pass;
1:584
for example, what I say by way of scientific knowledge, by way of illustration, is that after such and such a period there is an eclipse of the sun.
1:585
唯有懂得學問的人才盼望這事;
Only the man of knowledge hopes for this;
1:586
for the other man simply does not know whether it happens or does not happen.
1:587
值得在此提醒一點:探究的問題共有四種;
It is good to recall this: that there are four kinds of inquiry;
1:588
the simple ones are 'that it is' and 'what it is,'
1:589
then the composite ones are 'how it is' and 'why it is.'
1:590
It belongs, then, to the man of knowledge to expect those things which will certainly come to pass in accordance with scientific knowledge.
1:591
因為他既知道有日食這回事,也知道日食是什麼——就是月亮運行到日下;
For he knows both that there is an eclipse and what an eclipse is—namely, the running-under of the moon;
1:592
又知道它是如何發生的——就是當月亮垂直運行到太陽之下時,便有日食;
and how it comes about—namely, that when the moon comes directly beneath the sun, an eclipse occurs;
1:593
and why it is so—namely, that the sun in its circuit comes to be at differing distances.
1:594
The moon's circle is beneath the sun's circle.
1:595
It does not, therefore, always come directly beneath.
1:596
If it comes here and again to the position below, the one coming to be below hides the one above.
1:597
They say, at any rate, that an eclipse is the blocking-off of the moon over against the sun.
1:598
It belongs, then, to the man of knowledge to know this unfailing expectation.
1:599
至於那些碰巧偶然的事,人或許可以期待,譬如雨水或豐收;
As for chance things, one may expect, say, rain or a good harvest;
1:600
but these often turn out otherwise.
1:601
'For the king hopes in the Lord.'
1:602
His hope and expectation are unfailing.
1:603
'In the mercy of the Most High he shall not be shaken.'
1:604
蒙至高者憐憫的人必不動搖;
The one who is shown mercy by the Most High is not shaken;
1:605
for he is shaken then, when his subjects are found unworthy of his kingdom.
1:606
Then he forsakes them, he turns away from them.
1:607
And 'hoping,' just as 'God's repenting,' we understand in this way, according to a conceptual notion.
1:608
It belongs to the Most High to bless rational beings, just as also in the words:
1:609
'Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace.'
1:610
'May your hand be found by all your enemies; may your right hand find out all those who hate you.'
1:611
即使就身體而言,也可能在右手與一般的手之間有所分別;
It is possible even in the case of the body to have a distinction between the right hand and the hand in general;
1:612
for the right hand is a hand, but not every hand is a right hand.
1:613
Here too we have both a 'hand' and a 'right hand' named of God.
1:614
And concerning the true David, who is of the seed of David, it is said in another psalm:
1:615
'And he will set his hand upon the sea, and his right hand upon the rivers.'
1:616
你要留意,在海上單單提到「手」;
And observe that upon the sea the 'hand' is set simply;
1:617
for the 'right hand' is not upon the sea, but upon his rivers.
1:618
'Your hand utterly destroyed the nations.'
1:619
Often the 'hand' is spoken of even as the military power of a king, and the 'hands' of judges are their executioners.
1:620
因此,連魔鬼也知道那手是施行傷害的;
The devil too, then, knew that the hand is the harmful one;
1:621
'Send forth'—not 'your right hand,' but 'your hand, and touch all that he has.'
1:622
'May your hand be found by all your enemies.'
1:623
Your hand that punishes your enemies shall be made manifest.
1:624
'But the face of the Lord is against those who do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.'
1:625
行惡的人以為沒有天命的看顧,以為對他們所虧負的人沒有申冤報應;
Those who do evil suppose that there is no providence, that there is no requital against those whom they wrong;
1:626
but when they receive the trial of some painful thing, coming at times to full awareness, they behold the face of God.
1:627
And just as from the greatness and beauty of created things we contemplate proportionately their Author, so from the greatness and intricacy of the workings of His governance the Judge is contemplated.
1:628
We have found Pharaoh too despising God, and then, when he was struck, coming to a conception of God.
1:629
'I do not know the Lord'—now he both confesses that he knows Him and that He is righteous:
1:630
'But I and my people are ungodly.'
1:631
但若神的面臨到行惡的法老身上,那手就被尋見;
But if the face of God came upon Pharaoh when he was doing evil, then the hand is found;
1:632
for they must at some time come to know that there is a Judge—if not in this present life, yet at last.
1:633
然而那手臨到仇敵身上;
But the hand is found upon the enemies;
1:634
and the right hand finds out those who hate.
1:635
懷恨的人能比仇敵較不邪惡;
And those who hate can be less evil than the enemies;
1:636
for not everyone who hates is hostile, but everyone who is hostile hates.
1:637
And just as it was said that the hand of God is set in the sea, that by grievous labours it might still the tossing and the brine, while the right hand is set in the rivers of the Saviour—these are they who possess a life according to the Spirit, out of whose belly flow living rivers—
1:638
'The rivers have lifted up, O Lord, the rivers have lifted up their voices'—thus is found the right hand of the Saviour that saves, that exalts, according to what is said:
1:639
'The right hand of the Lord has exalted me, the right hand of the Lord has wrought power; I shall not die, but I shall live.'
1:640
'Thou shalt make them as an oven of fire in the time of thy presence.'
1:641
This can be said of the enemies alone, those who are delivered over to punishment.
1:642
But if it be also concerning both, then understand what is written thus:
1:643
Those who are built upon the foundation, which is Christ, if they be gold and silver, are only tried by fire but are not destroyed, nor are they consumed even though they be overtaken by the fire.
1:644
But if they be wood, hay, stubble, they are destroyed and are set as an oven of fire; they are, in the end, but as smoke.
1:645
Now the smoke is a consequence that follows upon the beneficial working of the fire.
1:646
Whenever, then, wood and hay and stubble come to be in the time of the face of God, as it is set down—for there shall be a time when a Judge shall be shown forth—those who are called wood and hay and stubble are not destroyed so as to be no more (for it is impossible to be destroyed in that way), but they are destroyed in that in which they are hay.
1:647
For this fire of punishment does not work upon substance, but upon dispositions and qualities.
1:648
This fire consumes not created things, but qualified states, dispositions of such a kind.
1:649
And teaching too does the very same thing:
1:650
它接納無知的人,並毀滅他,不是就其為人而言,乃是就其為無知而言;
it takes the ignorant man and destroys him not in that he is a man, but in that he is ignorant;
1:651
for it destroys his ignorance.
1:652
So also righteousness destroys the unrighteous man, not so that he should be no more, but so that he should be unrighteous no more.
1:653
'O Lord, in thy wrath confound them, and fire shall devour them.'
