他若在道德上犯罪——放縱情慾、發怒、行不義——他的言語就帶著罪孽;
If he sins in the moral sphere—being licentious, wrathful, acting unjustly—his words have lawlessness;
1:7035
他若持守錯謬的教義,他的言語就帶著詭詐;
but if he holds false opinions, his words have deceit;
1:7036
for he acts deceitfully, so that the impiety of his words may not become apparent and be trampled underfoot, and someone turn away from them.
1:7037
Did he not say 'transgression' (paranomia)?—Transgression is indeed lawlessness (anomia), but lawlessness is not in every case transgression.
1:7038
If a thing is done contrary to the law, the one who performs it comes to be outside the law: it is lawlessness.
1:7039
But if, having received the law, he transgresses, he acts against the law: it is transgression.
1:7040
Transgression, then, is also lawlessness, but lawlessness is not in every case transgression.
1:7041
The one who acts against the law and does things opposed to the law is judged from his settled disposition, so far as concerns the deeds.
1:7042
If, however, we consider the disposition of the one acting: he who has received the law and yet does not act according to it, transgresses.
1:7043
But if, again, he has no experience of a law—I mean a written law—he only acts lawlessly.
1:7044
他說:凡在律法以內犯了罪的;
As many, he says, as have sinned within the law;
1:7045
those who sin within the law are transgressors.
1:7046
Those who have not had a law sin lawlessly.
1:7047
Nevertheless, the thing done is one and the same.
1:7048
From the deliberate choice and disposition of the one acting I take the difference, so that it is called sometimes lawlessness, sometimes transgression.
1:7049
He was not willing to understand so as to do good.
1:7050
為要沒有人以為那分別神的僕人與違法者、分別殷勤人與卑劣人的乃是本性,他就把二者都歸於意向,說人或惡或善,都在乎他自己的意願;
So that no one may suppose that it is nature which distinguishes the servant of God from the transgressor, and the diligent man from the base, he has assigned both to deliberate choice, and says that a man is either evil or diligent by his own will;
1:7051
but another wishes to understand so as to do good.
1:7052
The diligent man wishes precisely this, to do good things.
1:7053
Again, the one who is not among these has come to be outside them by his own will.
1:7054
所以這段話確立了自由的意志,以及意向之自主與自由的本質,因為沒有人生來就是違法者,也沒有人按其本質而為善;
The passage therefore establishes free will and the self-governing and free character of deliberate choice, in that no one is a transgressor by constitution, and no one is good in his very essence;
1:7055
for we human beings are all of one and the same essence.
1:7056
It is according to our own choosing or shunning that we are either base or diligent.
1:7057
He devised lawlessness upon his bed.
1:7058
這是說,他不單在出去行事時才作不法之事,就是躺臥床上時也籌算罪孽——他本當效法那被稱為有福的人,就是晝夜思想耶和華律法的人;
This means that not only when he goes forth and acts does he work lawless deeds, but even while stretched out upon his bed he devises lawlessness—whereas he ought to imitate that man who is called blessed, who meditates day and night upon the law of the Lord;
1:7059
but rather, his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.
1:7060
He who meditates day and night upon the law of the Lord does not devise lawlessness upon his bed, but the law.
1:7061
It was said by the hierophant Moses in the person of God:
1:7062
我今日所吩咐你的這一切話,都要記在你心上,存在你魂裡;
And all these words which I command you today shall be in your heart and in your soul;
1:7063
as you walk on the way, as you lie down, as you rise up.
1:7064
If a man speaks the words of God even as he lies down, he does not devise lawlessness upon his bed.
1:7065
Even if the soul is in the body, yet it meditates on already coming to be outside it, buffeting the body and bringing it into servitude.
1:7066
Thus indeed it is said concerning those who are of such a disposition:
1:7067
Although they had flesh, yet they were not in the mind of the flesh.
1:7068
又說:肉體的心思就是與神為仇;
And further: the mind of the flesh is enmity toward God;
1:7069
and those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
1:7070
If he is speaking about this present flesh, then all the saints, being in it, pleased God.
1:7071
But it consists in this mindset — to be minded according to the flesh, to be wholly dependent upon the flesh, and so at last to become carnal.
1:7072
And who is it that becomes carnal, if not the one who sells himself to sin? For it is said: 'I am carnal, sold under sin.'
1:7073
'He devised iniquity upon his bed.'
1:7074
As though upon a bed, he reckoned iniquity in his body.
1:7075
But he ought, while lying upon this bed, to have lamented and pitied himself, because in his very reasoning there is transgression, so as to cry out:
1:7076
'With my tears will I water my couch.'
1:7077
But he who repents does not reckon iniquity.
1:7078
And concerning others it has been said in Micah the prophet:
1:7079
'He became one who devised evils upon his bed, and together with the day he brought them to accomplishment.'
1:7080
Often in the night they deliberate about transgressions, and together with the day they bring them to accomplishment.
1:7081
然而應當如此:即或有時在床上犯了不法,也當痛悔自責;
But rather, even if at some time upon the bed a transgression has occurred, one ought to be pierced with compunction;
1:7082
for this is what the word commands:
1:7083
'Be angry, and sin not;'
1:7084
'the things you say in your hearts, upon your beds be pierced with compunction.'
1:7085
For if you are pierced with compunction, the devil finds no place.
1:7086
'He stood in every way that is not good, and abhorred not evil.'
1:7087
He turned aside from every good way.
1:7088
At all events, the apostle says to Elymas the magician:
1:7089
'Wilt thou not cease to pervert the straight ways of the Lord?' They are straight and good.
1:7090
諸德之所以被稱為正直,是因它們乃是介於兩端之間的中道;
And the virtues are called straight because they are means between extremes;
1:7091
for in what is straight there is no deviation.
1:7092
God knows the ways that are on the right hand, but crooked are those on the left.
1:7093
又,那說「不善」的話說得甚好;
And it is well put to say 'not good';
1:7094
for what is not good is not altogether evil.
1:7095
It is impossible for anyone to stand in every evil way, since there are contrarieties even within vice.
1:7096
The coward cannot also be rash, nor the impious man superstitious.
1:7097
So then these things are not good.
1:7098
In their negation they are the same, but in their affirmation they are not the same.
1:7099
'O Lord, in the heaven is thy mercy, and thy truth reaches unto the clouds.'
1:7100
We speak of those who dwell upon the earth according to their mindset, those who mind earthly things, whom God the Word accuses through the prophet Jeremiah, saying:
1:7101
You have made deep your dwelling in the earth — were it possible, you would even wish to be below the earth — thinking of nothing exalted, having no citizenship in the heavens, not having your heart there toward those who say:
1:7102
'Let us lift up our heart toward that which is on high in heaven.'
1:7103
So then this too is again said concerning certain people:
1:7104
'But they sought my soul in vain; they shall go into the lowest parts of the earth.'
1:7105
And Moses too, in the triumphal song concerning Pharaoh and those with him, said:
1:7106
'Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, and the earth swallowed them.'
1:7107
And yet, according to the literal account, it was not earth that had swallowed them, but water.
1:7108
'They sank straightway like lead in the mighty water.'
1:7109
At any rate, whenever God stretches out his right hand against the wicked, they are swallowed up out of the earth, they become wholly earthly, they are given over to passions of dishonour, they are given over in the lusts of their hearts unto uncleanness, to serve the creature rather than the Creator.
1:7110
因此,他的慈愛在天上;
So then, in the heaven is his mercy;
1:7111
'For thou showest mercy unto thousands of them that love thee.'
1:7112
彷彿藉著某種梯子,人憑著慈愛登上天去;
As though by a certain ladder, it ascends into heaven by mercy;
1:7113
for the nature of God's mercy is not of the things below, but is above.
1:7114
So then, even if at some time the goodness of God comes to be upon the earth — that is, among men — (for it is said:
1:7115
'The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord') — those who receive mercy are raised up by that very mercy into heaven.
1:7116
'And unto the clouds,' it says, 'is thy truth.'
1:7117
One must not give heed to those who take away providence from the earth and say that it is confined only as far as the bounds of the moon, on the ground of the saying:
1:7118
'Thy truth reaches unto the clouds.'
1:7119
The clouds are the prophets, ministering to us the spiritual rain, from which spiritual rain God's paradise is watered — the seed that fell upon the good earth, which Jesus sowed so as to bring forth a hundredfold, and a hundred and sixty and thirty.
1:7120
So then, as far as these clouds which minister the spiritual rain — concerning whom it has been said:
1:7121
'Let the clouds rain down righteousness' — is the truth of God.
1:7122
If there is any cloud able to pour forth spiritual rain and righteousness, that one has the truth of God.
1:7123
'Thy righteousness is as the mountains of God.'
1:7124
In many ways are the mountains of God interpreted according to the Scripture.
1:7125
'Thou dost enlighten wondrously from the everlasting mountains.' By 'everlasting mountains' it means the saints, who look no longer at the things that are seen, which are temporal, but at the things not seen, which happen to be eternal.
1:7126
These sensible mountains are not eternal.
1:7127
But if the earth and the heaven pass away, then the mountains — which are outflows and portions of the earth — depart along with it, they pass away with it, so that those are not eternal.
1:7128
But those who look toward the eternal things, the things not seen, the higher things, the uppermost things — they are the mountains, having the elevation of a heavenly citizenship, having the loftiness of a godly mindset.
1:7129
Draw near, then, to the everlasting mountains; draw near in your disposition; take up the same lofty mindset as those.
1:7130
Thy righteousness, then, is as the mountains of God.
1:7131
The righteousness that is among men, whenever it grows in those who possess it, makes them like the mountains of God.
1:7132
But according to another sense, one may call 'the mountains of God' all the higher things, unto which the ninety and nine sheep remained, when Jesus came to save that which had strayed from the mountains, which had fallen down thence and had come to be in wandering and persecution and death.
1:7133
Draw near, then, to the everlasting mountains; draw near in your disposition; take up the same lofty mindset as those.
1:7134
Thy righteousness, then, is as the mountains of God.
1:7135
The righteousness that is among men, whenever it grows in those who possess it, makes them like the mountains of God.
1:7136
It is possible, according to yet another sense, to call the righteousness of the Saviour who came to sojourn among us those whom he saved.
1:7137
'For him who knew no sin he made to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him.'
1:7138
那些在那位替我們成為罪者裡面已成為神之義的人,便好像神的山,好像眾天使,好像眾天使長;
Those who have become the righteousness of God in him who became sin for us are as the mountains of God, as the angels, as the archangels;
1:7139
for they have been united with the creation above.
1:7140
'O Lord, in the heaven is thy mercy, and thy truth reaches unto the clouds.'
1:7141
God shows mercy in one way, and human beings in another.
1:7142
所以,由人所行的憐憫,以及對鄰舍所施的善行,乃是屬人的;
The mercy, then, that is done by human beings, and the benefaction shown to one's neighbour, is a human thing;
1:7143
for they know how to help and to feed and to do the other things in a human manner, and this mercy is one that draws near to the earth, that is, to the things of men.
1:7144
But God, in showing mercy, lifts up those who are being lifted, so as to carry them up into heaven.
1:7145
'In heaven, therefore, is thy mercy.'
1:7146
This also is possible, namely:
1:7147
你施憐憫,並不是照著屬人的方式施憐憫;
In showing mercy, thou dost not show mercy after a human manner;
1:7148
for even if thou givest food to all flesh, and even if thou grantest health to the sick, yet this is a righteousness that does not touch heaven.
1:7149
And that I may put it more clearly:
1:7150
those things that pertain to the gift of God, given not only to the righteous but also to the base, both to rational and to irrational creatures, are not heavenly.
1:7151
But those alone are of heaven and lead one on into heaven which are truly good, with a heavenward zeal.
1:7152
And in another psalm thou hast:
1:7153
'The earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.'
1:7154
祂憐憫大地,乃是差下那與地上之人相稱的憐憫;
He shows mercy upon the earth by sending down that mercy which is fitted for those upon the earth;
1:7155
but the mercy which he shows to thousands, to those who love mercy, is heavenly and raises one up into heaven.
1:7156
在此可以將「天」理解為有理性的本質、屬理智的存有;
It is possible here to understand 'heaven' as the rational substance, the intellectual existence;
1:7157
for thus some have also taken this passage,
1:7158
understanding the more corporeal existence and substance [by 'earth'], but the rational [existence] by 'heaven.'
1:7159
It is said, at any rate, elsewhere also:
1:7160
'The heaven of heaven belongs to the Lord.'
1:7161
And 'heaven' can be, not this visible one, not only the one before our eyes, but the whole.
1:7162
但那分為七重的天,也就是「天上的天」,乃是神聖的境界;
But the heaven that is divided into seven, the heaven of heaven, is the divine condition;
1:7163
for God is said to be in heaven, not because he is in a place.
1:7164
It is said, at any rate, in the Gospel:
1:7165
'No one has ascended into heaven except he who came down out of heaven, the Son of Man.'
1:7166
But Jesus alone came down from the true heaven, that is, from the condition befitting God, from what is, as it were, the watch-tower of God.
1:7167
事實上,魔鬼也曾一度在天上;
In fact, then, the devil too was once in heaven;
1:7168
for from there he fell, together with those who blasphemed and were lifted up in pride.
1:7169
'I will ascend into heaven.'
1:7170
Being in heaven, how does he ascend into heaven? He was in the heaven in which there are also other divine and blessed substances.
1:7171
But he received a fancy and a desire to be God,
1:7172
and, imagining that he would become like the Most High, he named that likeness to the Most High 'heaven.'
1:7173
God alone, then, is in that which is called heaven, not because it is a place or some body or a created thing, but a condition — as it were, the condition of God, the watch-tower of God.
1:7174
He, therefore, who conceived the desire to be God, imagined a vain thing: that he was able to ascend above the clouds and to set his throne above the stars and to become like the Most High.
1:7175
['I said,] I will be like the Most High' — he ought to have taken to heart that likeness to the Most High is not a thing of the future.
1:7176
For he [the Most High] bears that same existence without limit; from limitless past and unto limitless future he is the same, without beginning and without end.
1:7177
But he who says 'I will be' has shown that as yet he is not.
1:7178
And he who is not God in this manner will never come to be so.
1:7179
所以對他而言,事情僅止於慾望而已,他甚至從自己所擁有的境地也墜落了;
The matter, therefore, stopped short at mere desire for him, and he fell even from what he had;
1:7180
for he was in heaven in another sense, and having said:
1:7181
'I will ascend into heaven,' he fell from the heaven which he possessed.
1:7182
For how did Lucifer, who rises in the morning, fall from heaven? By saying:
1:7183
How did he fall? He showed that he was in heaven; but by saying:
1:7184
'I will ascend into heaven and I will be,' he showed that he longed to come to be in another heaven.
1:7185
Correspondingly with 'heaven,' it is fitting to understand 'the clouds' as well.
1:7186
我們昨日說過,雲彩之名往往指的是神聖的性體;
We were saying yesterday that the name of the clouds often signifies divine natures;
1:7187
for when God speaks concerning Israel as being a vineyard, and that instead of grapes it brought forth thorns — instead of the fitting fruit it produced shameful lusts
1:7188
(and these thorns the Saviour spoke of) — he says:
1:7189
'I will command the clouds not to rain rain upon it.'
1:7190
But this rain is not perceptible to the senses; whence neither are the clouds that pour out upon it.
1:7191
'Let the clouds rain down righteousness.'
1:7192
But righteousness flows and comes down, not from sensible clouds.
1:7193
There is a certain truth which does not dwell primarily with God.
1:7194
「在我裡面有耶穌的真理」,彷彿還有另一種真理,並不能嚴格地稱為耶穌的真理;
'There is a truth of Jesus in me,' as though there were another truth which is not properly called the truth of Jesus;
1:7195
因為萬物確實都是屬祂的,祂是萬物的創造者;
for all things indeed are his, and he is the Maker of all;
1:7196
but his works, being objects of knowledge, have knowledge inherent in them and a truth which one is able to draw from the things known.
1:7197
There is, then, a truth, say, in grammar and in geometry and in the other sciences.
1:7198
祂暫且不稱那是耶穌的真理——並非因為它不也是屬祂的;
He does not for the present call that the truth of Jesus — not because it too is not his;
1:7199
for the objects of knowledge, in which the science and the truth reside, are his works.
1:7200
Let some mechanic construct a clock.
1:7201
那所造之物中,必然含有那使它得以成形的知識;
There is assuredly, in the thing constructed, the knowledge according to which it came to be;
1:7202
for having possessed mechanical knowledge, he constructed it.
1:7203
And there is truth in the construction, whenever it has such proportions as make it a faultless clock.
1:7204
If, therefore, someone should acquire that knowledge from that visible clock, he has come to possess the very knowledge of the one who constructed it,
1:7205
the one who made it, and having come to know him through that which came into being from him.
1:7206
Those who are knowledgeable [possess] the things they know, not in so far as they are already such, but in so far as they strive to be such, and they know these same things when they ascend to the very goal and end of the science.
1:7207
那超越一切之上的長進,或可稱為那有學識之人的知識與真理——並非因為它不是出於神、不是入門性的;
That progress, then, which is over all things, might be called the knowledge and truth of the knowledgeable man — not because it is not of God and introductory;
1:7208
for it is taken up for its own sake.
1:7209
The archetype and the entire idea of truth is the Saviour.
1:7210
And it is possible to partake of this truth.
1:7211
He who has partaken has received a settled state called truth, concerning which the holy one said:
1:7212
'There is truth in me,' and:
1:7213
'I have not hidden thy truth within my heart.'
1:7214
This truth has come to be through the truth, inasmuch as through the original seal there comes to be the impression made in wax or in some other material.
1:7215
Take note, then, that concerning another sort of quality also—one that is, so to speak, more properly human—a certain difference is still to be found.
1:7216
Quality in and of itself does not admit of the more and the less.
1:7217
But that which admits and that which does not admit are not the same.
1:7218
It is in a manner other and yet not other.
1:7219
But if it comes to be in a habit and a disposition, then it does admit of the more and the less.
1:7220
Yet it can be contemplated in and by itself.
1:7221
For neither does he who wishes accurately to behold quality take it from the qualified thing itself, but rather from quality he comes to know the qualified thing as thus qualified.
1:7222
'Thy judgments are a great deep.'
1:7223
Among human beings much difference is to be found, both of the things that befall from without and of those that arise from their own disposition.
1:7224
One may find a difference arising from external things.
1:7225
Some are rich, others poor; some are rulers, others subjects; some are healthy, others sickly.
1:7226
The same holds, moreover, with regard to their pursuits.
1:7227
For, as it were, in soul some are by nature quick and others slow, and some are well-inclined toward virtue while others are inclined toward vice.
1:7228
And of these things there is much difference.
1:7229
For no human being is in perfect virtue, even if one presses on toward it and even if one makes progress in it.
1:7230
But where there is the more and the less, there is much indefiniteness.
1:7231
And it is well to say that virtue, admitting of the more and the less, will at some point arrive at its consummation, when the earnest man is no more earnest than another earnest man, nor the wise man wiser than another wise man.
1:7232
But vice is ever in indefiniteness.
1:7233
For how is it possible that there should be one consummation of vice itself, which is discordant and various? In excess and in deficiency there is indefiniteness, but in the mean some determinate consummation is grasped.
1:7234
既然如此,我們人雖然似乎沒有這樣的知識,卻也無法說明為何這人貧窮、那人富足;
Since, then, we human beings are unable to say—even though we may not seem to have knowledge—why this man is poor and another is rich;
1:7235
we often say that God, seeing that this man, upon obtaining wealth or rank, exalts himself and tramples upon all, does not give it to them; and we find such men, though they trample and rise up, possessing wealth in every respect.
1:7236
Likewise also concerning health and the movements of the soul we say that their difference comes about by the judgment of God.
1:7237
And that it comes about by the judgment of God, let us take the saying from the Gospel and make it plain, if it is possible for us to be led by the hand to this account:
1:7238
In the Gospel the Saviour says:
1:7239
'For if the mighty works that were done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would long ago have repented, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.'
1:7240
If the marvellous mighty works had been done among the Sidonians and the Tyrians, they would have been called forth to repentance.
1:7241
But the cities that were mentioned, Bethsaida and Chorazin, having experienced these works—why did the marvellous mighty works come to be there, where they did not repent? It is a word resembling an abyss.
1:7242
The Apostle called the judgments of God unsearchable.
1:7243
No one searches them out, no one is able to grasp their depth.
1:7244
But scarcely, when we attend to the things that are done and, as it were, judged, do we receive an impression that it is God who judges and who orders each thing.
1:7245
But the particular reason we cannot state—why this man, for instance, is strong, and another weak.
1:7246
We are unable to state the particulars.
1:7247
And as I once said, that there is a cyclical course of treatment, and if someone takes each remedy by itself, he thinks he understands it, being sometimes deceived, and blames the physician.
1:7248
But then he would rightly understand it, if he knew why these things happened before it and those things will follow after it, and until what point it is that health may be established.
1:7249
But one ignorant of medicine cannot grasp this.
1:7250
We therefore receive an impression concerning these matters in whatever measure, and we know that these judgments come about by the judgment of God.
1:7251
Thy judgments, then, are not simply a deep, but a great deep.
1:7252
And even the simple deep has very much depth and has an unbounded bottom, but much more so the great deep.
1:7253
By the word 'great' he signifies the intensification, just as also the unsearchableness of the judgments.
1:7254
In other psalms concerning this it was said:
1:7255
The hymn-singer, speaking of God, said:
1:7256
'The deep as a garment is his covering.'
1:7257
'He made darkness his hiding-place.'
1:7258
He means the obscurity and the incomprehensibility.
1:7259
This darkness of obscurity, of incomprehensibility, being hidden, is also a garment resembling an abyss.
1:7260
'Thou wilt save men and beasts, O Lord.'
1:7261
He saves men and beasts.
1:7262
And even if we take 'beasts' according to the plain sense, we also take the men who are in sense-perception.
1:7263
他管理萬物,就是有理性的與無理性的活物——有理性的是為它們自己的緣故,無理性的則是為著有理性的緣故而被造的;
But he governs all things, both the rational and the irrational living creatures—the rational for their own sakes, but the irrational as having come into being for the sake of the rational;
1:7264
for the irrational fulfil the needs of the rational.
1:7265
Some bear burdens for them, others draw the plough, and others in other ways provide service.
1:7266
Then, since these too are able to fall under harm and death, he saves these also.
1:7267
'Men, therefore, and beasts thou wilt save, O Lord.'
1:7268
Again the same unsearchableness of the judgments is found in these matters too, that he saves all men indeed, but in differing ways—some after much affliction, others after a certain repose and pleasure.
1:7269
But if he means that men are saved with the true salvation, and prays concerning that of which it has been said, that the Saviour became to all who obey the cause of eternal salvation—with a view to which signification the holy one said:
1:7270
「我們的神是施行拯救的神」——那麼此處的「牲畜」就當按寓意來理解;
'Our God is a God of saving'—then here 'the beasts' must be understood allegorically;
1:7271
因為在那些已歸向敬虔、並歸向福音本身之教訓的人中,有的被稱為門徒,有的被稱為羊;
for of those who have come to godliness and to the very teaching of the Gospel, some are called disciples, others sheep;
1:7272
'My sheep hear my voice.'
1:7273
Now the voice is the ready, surface rendering of the Scriptures, that which reaches and knocks upon the soul and its hearing, but not indeed upon the mind.
1:7274
So then his sheep hear the voice of Jesus as of the best and true shepherd.
1:7275
'The Lord and the Teacher, and ye say well;
1:7276
for I am, I am truly a teacher.
1:7277
For ye serve me by keeping my laws'—these are not sheep, but disciples, disciples of wisdom, disciples of the truth.
1:7278
But the sheep are a shepherd's sheep.
1:7279
But there is another, condescending conception of the Saviour, namely his being a shepherd.
1:7280
And since he wills to save and to better all, and salvation and betterment are then accomplished when it is according to the capacity of the one able to be benefited with respect to what he is able to receive, he calls some, up to his voice, mere hearers, but others hearers of his word, of his teaching.
1:7281
He saves, then, both the men so called and the beasts.
1:7282
And He saves the sheep as well, so that they may no longer be sheep, but that out of sheep they may become men.
1:7283
This, at any rate, is what the twenty-second Psalm hints at:
1:7284
'The Lord,' it says, 'shepherds me, and I shall lack nothing.'
1:7285
'In a place of green pasture, there He has made me to dwell; by the water of rest He has nourished me.'
1:7286
He reports with thanksgiving the benefits that have come to him from the Shepherd.
1:7287
And a little later he adds:
1:7288
'You have prepared a table before me.'
1:7289
But after the advancement afforded by the table, he also partakes of a cup, from which Wisdom, who has mingled her own wine, pledges a draught.
1:7290
It is your cup, if you pledge it to me; but it is my cup, if you have measured out to me what I am able to drink.
1:7291
'How you have multiplied your mercy, O God.'
1:7292
By the mercy of God even human beings are saved.
1:7293
But then the mercy of God is multiplied and His bountifulness is made manifest, when He saves the beasts as well.
1:7294
這就好比,論到一位完全的教師,你或許會說:當他教導有智慧、成熟的聽眾時,他的良善便顯明出來;
It is as though, speaking of a perfect teacher, you were to say that his goodness is recognized when he instructs wise and perfect hearers;
1:7295
but his goodness is multiplied when he also condescends to the foolish and endeavors to lead them up into a greater condition.
1:7296
So then, at once, the teacher of Christianity is a debtor to the wise and to the foolish, to Greeks and to barbarians.
1:7297
He is a debtor not only to the wise, but also to the foolish.
1:7298
And to the wise he speaks wisdom among the perfect; but to the foolish he does not speak wisdom, rather he sets before them those lessons which draw them away from foolishness, so that, being no longer foolish, they may thereafter receive wisdom.
1:7299
Again, to Greeks—that is, to those who possess a precise and Hellenic mind, able to follow along—he speaks as to Greeks.
1:7300
But to those who are barbarous in soul, he says those things which draw them away from the barbarian nation, from such a mindset that is more savage.
1:7301
'But the sons of men shall hope in the shelter of your wings.'
1:7302
The sons of these men.
1:7303
If, then, in accordance with the former interpretation, 'men' be understood as the mortal rational living beings and 'beasts' as those that serve them, the sons of these men have their hope in the shelter of the wings of God.
1:7304
These wings are intelligible ones, lifting the mind on high.
1:7305
「誰能給我翅膀像鴿子呢?」——我們並非如此理解,彷彿他是在祈求把某種可感之物的翅膀賜給他;
'Who will give me wings like a dove's?'—we do not so understand it as though he were praying that the wings of a sensible creature be given to him;
1:7306
for of things impossible there is neither desire nor prayer.
1:7307
'As an eagle yearns over its nestlings.'
1:7308
Then they were given wings; they were able to be taken up upon the shoulders of God.
1:7309
But what is it that lies within our power, thus to be given wings? Hear what the prophet Isaiah says:
1:7310
'They that wait upon God shall renew their strength; they shall put forth feathers like eagles; they shall run and not grow weary.'
1:7311
And another prays, saying:
1:7312
'Your youth shall be renewed like the eagle's.'
1:7313
所以,每當聖徒說他已長出翅膀,他的羽翼就當理解為德行、悟性與智慧;
Whenever, then, the holy one says that he has been given wings, his feathers are to be understood as virtue and understanding and wisdom;
1:7314
for these lift the man on high, exalting him.
1:7315
'They shall be sheltered from the fatness of your house'—they are sheltered under the wings of God.
1:7316
The shelter of the wings of God becomes their shelter.
1:7317
And they are then sheltered, so that they may put forth feathers, so that they may be nested, so that they may become as eggs under the wings of God.
1:7318
The shelter of the wings of God becomes their shelter.
1:7319
And they are then sheltered, so that they may put forth feathers; but the eggs are the unformed souls which have not yet received the formation of Christ.
1:7320
So when they have come to be under His wings, then they are formed and become living creatures, according to allegory, according to the inner man.
1:7321
Sons not of the mortal living beings, but of those who truly guard the man that is according to the image and likeness of God.
1:7322
It can also be said by way of paraphrase, 'sons of men' in the sense of simply 'the men.'
1:7323
'They shall be made drunk with the fatness of your house.'
1:7324
'Be not drunk,' he says, 'with wine, wherein is dissipation.'
1:7325
按著字面淺顯的意思來說,過度飲酒確實可稱為放蕩之酒;
And in the plain sense, indeed, the excessive drinking of wine can be called the wine of dissipation;
1:7326
for it harms the mind and sometimes causes one to stumble.
1:7327
And concerning those who hold contrary opinions and introduce godless doctrines, setting them forth as though they were food and wine, it is said:
1:7328
'But these feed on the food of ungodliness.'
1:7329
And those who eat and seek after the food of ungodliness are the very ones concerning whom it has been said:
1:7330
'You gave him as food to the peoples, to the Ethiopians.'
1:7331
feeding on godless doctrines and drinking the corresponding wine, the wine of dissipation.
1:7332
'Be not drunk, then, with wine, wherein is dissipation.'
1:7333
飲這酒乃是不敬虔之人的行徑;
But it belongs to the ungodly to drink this wine;
1:7334
for 'they shall be made drunk with lawless wine.'
1:7335
But there is also a praiseworthy drunkenness—and, that I may put it as some have said, a sober drunkenness, which makes those who have drunk sober.
1:7336
In the Song of Songs, at any rate, Jesus said to His companions:
1:7337
'Eat, drink, and be drunk, O brethren.'
1:7338
神的道向祂自己的弟兄們說這些話;
To His own brethren the God-Word says these things;
1:7339
for having become man He gained as brethren those who conduct themselves after His manner, who receive His teachings and are made sons.
1:7340
'Eat, then, drink, be drunk.'
1:7341
要吃那智慧為你們預備的屬靈食物;
'Eat' of the spiritual food which Wisdom has prepared for you;
1:7342
for she has made ready her own table.
1:7343
And 'drink' that wine which leads to a sober intoxication.
1:7344
And so here too he did not say it once and for all, but 'they shall be made drunk from the fatness of your house.'
1:7345
按一種解法,教會被稱為神的家;
According to one rendering, the Church is called the house of God;
1:7346
for it was said by Paul to Timothy:
1:7347
'If I tarry, I have written to you how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God.'
1:7348
The fatness of this house is the perfect teaching, the wisdom that is spoken among the perfect, the solid food, which those partake of who have the faculties of the inner man exercised to discern good and evil.
1:7349
And these drink the wine that is gathered from the true vine.
1:7350
These, then, are made drunk from the fatness of the house of God.
1:7351
The perfect teaching, the unfailing knowledge of the truth, is the fatness of this house of God.
1:7352
But if you also call the manhood of the Saviour a house, since He says:
