He who does not understand the honour bestowed on him from God is compared to the senseless beasts, and his hypostasis, by reason of its worthlessness, is reckoned as nothing.
1:8764
But since it also signifies endurance, he says:
1:8765
Even though I have endured, longing to see my end, and I entreat that you make this known to me, yet this endurance of mine, so measured against you, is but a brief thing.
1:8766
'Yet the sum of all is vanity — every living man.'
1:8767
All things that exist for man's sake are vanity, as the Preacher has just now interpreted.
1:8768
In comparison with things that transcend and are perfect and truly eternal, man's hypostasis is vain — 'yet every living man.'
1:8769
And though all other things besides man are vanity — such as mortal animals, transient things, even those that are lifeless — yet man alone is 'living,' living according to that life which they live who follow Abraham; for:
1:8770
'For God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.'
1:8771
Yet the man who lives merely according to the human life is himself also vain.
1:8772
這一切都是虛空;
All these things are vanity;
1:8773
for even though they be mortal, once dead they are no more.
1:8774
The living man who does not come to be outside the human life is himself also vanity — so that it may be thus:
1:8775
'Yet the sum of all is vanity, and every living man.'
1:8776
'Yet the sum of all is vanity, but man is living.'
1:8777
The essence? — Even if man lives otherwise than as a mortal would live, yet in comparison with the surpassing greatness of the divine life and of God himself, the fountain of life, it is nothing.
1:8778
Things called 'small' and 'no smaller' belong to the category of relatives.
1:8779
「小」並沒有一個確定、有限的量;
'Small' does not have a fixed, delimited quantity;
1:8780
for it is said by reference to something greater.
1:8781
Thus we sometimes call the span-length greater than the finger-length.
1:8782
Indeed, in the Categories you have 'a small mountain' and 'a large millet-grain.'
1:8783
'Surely man walks about in an image.'
1:8784
I have said that he speaks of the other things besides man, that all are vanity.
1:8785
Man alone is 'living.'
1:8786
He has something more than the others.
1:8787
雖然如此,他縱然是活著的,卻不常擁有這種活動;
Nevertheless, though he is living, he does not always possess this motion;
1:8788
'Surely,' he says, 'man walks about in an image.'
1:8789
他並沒有說是在可稱讚的還是可責備的影像裡;
He did not say whether in a praiseworthy or a blameworthy one;
1:8790
but in whatever manner one walks, in whatever manner one acts, he is in some image.
1:8791
And taking it more generally, one must say that it is either in the image of the heavenly or in that of the earthy.
1:8792
從這樣的說法顯而易見,人是有自主之權的;
It is evident from such an expression that man possesses free will;
1:8793
for if he were good by constitution, he would always walk in the image of the heavenly, and if he were evil by essence, in that of the earthy.
1:8794
But it is possible to divide these general images into species.
1:8795
And I say that one man is in the image of a fox, another in the image of a lion, and one who becomes like a wanton mare bears yet another image, and another is in the image of a dove — yet every man walks about in an image.
1:8796
'Surely man walks about in an image, yet they are troubled in vain.'
1:8797
But the wicked are troubled in vain.
1:8798
And he goes on to describe this vain trouble, namely, that it is this eager pursuit of human things.
1:8799
'He heaps up treasure, and knows not for whom he gathers it.'
1:8800
'He heaps up treasure, and knows not for whom he gathers it.'
1:8801
In Ecclesiastes it is plainly said that:
1:8802
'the heir of his possessions — whether he be wise or a fool.'
1:8803
And often what a man has treasured up, he leaves behind.
1:8804
And sometimes, before a single year has passed, those things pass over to others.
1:8805
因此,人不當熱衷於這樣積蓄財寶;
Wherefore one ought not to be eager to heap up treasure in this way;
1:8806
for 'treasures shall not profit the lawless, but righteousness delivers from death.'
1:8807
One must therefore treasure up righteousness — that which delivers from death and from every other evil.
1:8808
And this wealth is treasured up in heaven.
1:8809
「不要為自己積攢財寶在地上,只要積攢財寶在天上」;
'Do not lay up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, but lay up treasures in heaven;'
1:8810
for since where the treasure is, there also is the mind, which is called the heart, one must treasure in heaven, that we may have our mind there, and must decline to treasure on earth, lest we have our understanding there.
1:8811
'Those who treasure up wrong-doing and misery in their lands.'
1:8812
如此,那行走在影像中、積蓄財寶的人,並不知道自己是為誰積聚這些;
The man, then, who walks about in an image, treasuring up, does not know for whom he gathers these things;
1:8813
for it is uncertain to him what he shall inherit.
1:8814
Wherefore the earnest man heeds the command to treasure in the heavens.
1:8815
He has his wealth laid up in good works.
1:8816
This indeed Paul also writes to Timothy:
1:8817
'Charge those who are rich in this present age not to be high-minded on account of riches, but to trust in God, who supplies all things.'
1:8818
One must also speak of blameworthy wealth, such as the heretical opinion of godless doctrines.
1:8819
And he who treasures up these things does not know for whom he gathers them.
1:8820
他反而把它撇下留給別人;
But he leaves it behind to another;
1:8821
因為那假冒為知識的所謂知識,其應許只延續到今生為止;
For the knowledge that is falsely so-called holds its promise only as far as the present life;
1:8822
for when the truth shines forth, it is dissolved and made to vanish.
1:8823
然而卻是在影像中;—因為雖然每一個活人都存在,但他並非不可移易地立於那可稱讚的生命之中;
nevertheless in an image; — for though every living man exists, yet he is not immutably established in the praiseworthy manner of living;
1:8824
for if he had remained in the true and first image according to which he was created, he would not have been troubled, nor would he have laid up treasure in vain.
1:8825
然而,他雖已成為活人,卻仍在影像中度過生命;
nevertheless, even though he has come to be alive, he passes his course in an image;
1:8826
但絕非在那起初的影像中,而只是籠統地在某一影像中;
yet not at all in the first image, but simply in an image;
1:8827
for the rational living creature can never come to act outside of what accords with reason.
1:8828
and in acting it acts altogether either in a praiseworthy or in a blameworthy manner, thinking and doing now these things and now those.
1:8829
But are they troubled in vain? — It has already been said by us many times that the changes which come about in this way possess a certain difference.
1:8830
Then, whenever they do not keep this image according to which they came to be, they are a multitude who are troubled in vain.
1:8831
But when it signifies the life of man — that every living man, and indeed man, passes his course in an image (not in the same one, but since the images are diverse, and especially those that are blameworthy and debased) — many are those who are troubled.
1:8832
「如今我等候什麼呢?豈不是等候主嗎?」上文所說的乃是論到別人;
'And now, what is my patient hope? Is it not the Lord?' What has been said above was spoken concerning others;
1:8833
but I speak concerning myself:
1:8834
'What is my patient hope? Is it not the Lord?' I wait for no other.
1:8835
And just as the Lord himself becomes wisdom and righteousness and sanctification to those who partake of him, so also the Lord himself becomes patient endurance to the one who waits.
1:8836
'And my substance is from you.'
1:8837
他論到主,說主是他的忍耐;
Concerning the Lord he says that his patient endurance is the Lord;
1:8838
and to the Lord himself, who is his patient endurance, he says:
1:8839
'And my substance is from you.'
1:8840
He can here call 'substance' the strength by which one is able to stand firm, for when you work together with me and are my patient endurance, I stand firm under all things.
1:8841
and the substance that is from you is praiseworthy to me.
1:8842
It is possible also to say 'substance' in place of 'essence,'
1:8843
即:「我的本質」—就是我那有理性之靈魂、那有理性活物的本質—是從你而來的;
namely: 'And my substance,' that of my rational soul, of the rational living creature, is from you;
1:8844
for you have given me a soul; from you I have the soul that does not take its beginning from seeds, nor is composed by reflection according to the Militarian sect, but from you is my substance.
1:8845
'Deliver me from all my transgressions.'
1:8846
Not from some, but from all, that I may come to be outside of every blameworthy image.
1:8847
'You have made me a reproach to the foolish.'
1:8848
From the beginning we said that the whole psalm bears the person of one who is repenting and making progress.
1:8849
被義人羞辱是卑劣的事,被愚妄人羞辱卻是可稱讚的;
It is a base thing to be reproached by a righteous man, but praiseworthy to be reproached by a foolish one;
1:8850
for the fool reproaches on account of good works and on account of zeal.
1:8851
Since there are reproaches, it is said:
1:8852
'Do not take upon yourself the reproaches of wicked men;'
1:8853
do not take upon yourself reproaches — but those of wicked men.
1:8854
不要因卑劣而受羞辱;
Do not be reproached for baseness;
1:8855
for there are those who are reproached on account of good things.
1:8856
To his acquaintances, at any rate, Jesus says:
1:8857
'Rejoice and be exceedingly glad when they reproach you.'
1:8858
這樣的羞辱是不當推辭的;
This reproach is not to be deprecated;
1:8859
for it is good, and it guides one into the kingdom of heaven.
1:8860
But the reproaches of wicked men are to be shunned.
1:8861
'I was made deaf and did not open my mouth.'
1:8862
Who is the fool that reproaches, but that sinner who stood up against him — inasmuch as he was made deaf and did not open his mouth? And here again it signifies the same thing:
1:8863
'I was made deaf and did not open my mouth.'
1:8864
I did not answer him in response to the things for which he reproaches.
1:8865
And I have often said this, that the apostle teaches this same thing by another power, saying:
1:8866
'A heretical man, after one admonition, reject;'
1:8867
do not open your mouth to him at all.
1:8868
But that you may have a word of defense and may say a word on your own behalf concerning yourself, namely:
1:8869
'I have done what lay within my own power: admonish him.'
1:8870
If he does not submit to the admonition, or even to a second — for some of the copies have 'even a second' — turn him away, knowing that he is sinning.
1:8871
The self-condemned man ought not to be admonished.
1:8872
'Because you are the one who made me, remove from me your scourges.'
1:8873
'He scourges every son whom he receives' — one who evidently has things for which he is scourged.
1:8874
For in this way I shall no longer be scourged.
1:8875
But as it is, I am still liable to scourges.
1:8876
Indeed, at any rate, he who has made the Most High his refuge has no evil approaching him, nor any scourge drawing near to his tent.
1:8877
Make me, therefore, such a one as to be no longer liable to scourges; remove from me that which deserves chastisement in me.
1:8878
'Deliver me from all my transgressions': when you deliver me, I am no longer to be chastised.
1:8879
In a certain manner, then, he was scourging him even through the fool, and he says that the reproaches of the fool are scourges.
1:8880
Unless God hands one over, he has no power, not even one who opposes the man not yet handed over.
1:8881
'By the strength of your hand I have fainted away.'
1:8882
There presses upon me the strength of your hand — that which disciplines, which strikes, which subjects to hardships.
1:8883
Since, then, it has become mighty upon me, I have fainted away.
1:8884
我已丟棄我從前的生命,離棄了我從前的光景;
I have cast off my former life, I have abandoned my former condition;
1:8885
for I did not faint away so as no longer to exist, so as to become weak, but so as to leave behind the condition that was preparing me for chastisement.
1:8886
I, the one who says these things, who makes confession, who says:
1:8887
'You have made me a reproach to the foolish' — I have fainted away, coming to be outside of my former condition.
1:8888
There is a fainting away that is praiseworthy, and there is also one that is blameworthy.
1:8889
'And Esau came from the field, fainting,' when he wished to eat the pottage.
1:8890
Here 'fainting' stands for having grown weak and longing for food.
1:8891
It is said often, and in a praiseworthy sense.
1:8892
'They failed and departed' — or 'they turned aside,' for it is transmitted this way as well.
1:8893
This failing is blameworthy.
1:8894
Faith failed from their mouth.
1:8895
But if someone leaves off unbelief and wickedness, this failing is not blameworthy.
1:8896
My soul longs and faints for the courts of my God.
1:8897
When the soul receives a longing for the courts of the Lord, those in the house of the Father, it fails insofar as it is soul: it casts off being soulish and becomes spiritual.
1:8898
With rebukes for iniquity you have chastened man.
1:8899
You do not reprove unless I have committed lawlessness.
1:8900
By reproving for iniquity you chasten man.
1:8901
You make him know that he is a human being, that he is rational, that he is according to the image of God.
1:8902
And in this way he is chastened by being reproved.
1:8903
It is indeed blessed to be chastened not in wrath, but with rebukes.
1:8904
All things, when reproved, are made manifest by the light.
1:8905
This reproof is a demonstration and a making-manifest.
1:8906
Reproof is not very often set down in Scripture in a praiseworthy sense — or only rarely — behold, as in the text:
1:8907
All things, when reproved, are made manifest by the light.
1:8908
Indeed they say that a reproof is a syllogism of contradiction.
1:8909
Let me put it this way: let someone posit that —
1:8910
'To do a base thing is [good]' — we say that:
1:8911
But everything that the temperate man does is good.
1:8912
And there has arisen a reproof by contradiction.
1:8913
'To act unjustly is profitable' —
1:8914
For there are those who hold such an opinion, that injustice is beneficial, and rather that justice is harmful.
1:8915
But the righteous man, he says, does not increase his wealth, while the unjust man multiplies his riches.
1:8916
We therefore construct a reproof by contradiction of this kind:
1:8917
Injustice is to be forbidden.
1:8918
Everything that is to be forbidden is harmful.
1:8919
Therefore injustice is not profitable.
1:8920
There has arisen a syllogism of contradiction, and this syllogism of contradiction is called a reproof.
1:8921
For those who reason together did not do this in the way they now argue; the earlier ones did it otherwise.
1:8922
Wherefore they are sophists rather than dialecticians.
1:8923
They have as their aim to win, and they lay down contentious propositions, which they cling to and persist in.
1:8924
But the true dialectician, since he argues on both sides — and of the two the one is true and the other false — from the mutual argumentation knows which is the true and which the false.
1:8925
And the truth itself appears from the demonstration of the false, since of contraries there is one and the same knowledge.
1:8926
And you have made his soul waste away like a spider's web.
1:8927
'Like a spider's web you have made his soul waste away' — his soul, that is, according to which he is soulish.
1:8928
It is said concerning some base man, or base woman:
1:8929
In the desires of her own soul she was carried along as by a spirit.
1:8930
When someone fashions out of his own soul, say, prophecies for himself, or as it were doctrines of piety, he is carried along by a spirit in the desires of the soul.
1:8931
He is not carried along in the Holy Spirit.
1:8932
In another book, at any rate, I stated the distinction, that:
1:8933
Fleshly is that man who campaigns according to the flesh, who yields to the desires of the flesh, who is sold under the flesh, who has become fleshly and sold under sin.
1:8934
But a spiritual man is one who has risen above the state of the soulish man, when in all things he is both borne by the Holy Spirit as by God and does and performs everything accordingly.
1:8935
The soulish man is one who is neither fleshly nor spiritual.
1:8936
And perhaps all the wise men of the world are of this kind.
1:8937
They suppose themselves to be self-determined according to the motions and thoughts of their own soul.
1:8938
And on account of this they do not receive the things of the Spirit.
1:8939
For since they prefer their own things and consider their own understanding to be great, they do not receive the things of the Spirit, deeming them foolishness.
1:8940
For indeed there are certain whole schools of thought, established both among the Greeks and among Christians, which say that allegories are foolishness, that they are mere fabrications.
1:8941
And they say that the contemplations concerning intelligible things are false, inasmuch as they consider all things to be bodies and objects of sense.
1:8942
These, then, are soulish men, not receiving the things of the Spirit, considering themselves self-determined and able of themselves to contemplate all things.
1:8943
His soul, then, being of such a kind — not its substance, but the state according to which it is soul — you have made waste away like the spider's web.
1:8944
And the spider is so very weak that it is said:
1:8945
Their web shall not serve for a garment.
1:8946
He says that the easily-overturned character of the fabric of that creature called the spider is a wasting-away of the soul.
1:8947
When the soul wastes away, this wasting-away also comes about for its benefit.
1:8948
For the spider-like quality grows weak within it, and thenceforth it is shown to be outside of wickedness.
1:8949
You have therefore made waste away like a spider's web the soul of this man who is reproved with rebukes for iniquity.
1:8950
Nevertheless every man is troubled in vain.
1:8951
All the men who are outside the chastening of God and outside his rebukes are troubled in vain.
1:8952
But this man, even if he is troubled when reproved, even while his soul is wasting away like the spider's web, does not suffer this in vain.
1:8953
For he receives a change for the better.
1:8954
existing [thus], he is troubled in vain according to what was said before:
1:8955
Surely man walks about in an image; nevertheless they are troubled in vain.
1:8956
He who does not wish to be troubled, but to have imperturbability, becomes a god by receiving the word of God.
1:8957
For he called those gods to whom the word of God came.
1:8958
And these are not troubled in vain, but even if it happen that they stumble or that a first-impulse arise, they say:
1:8959
I was troubled, and I did not speak.
1:8960
Their disturbance stops at the level of a first-impulse.
1:8961
Are they troubled from within themselves? — Sometimes they are troubled from within themselves, and at other times by certain things that befall them.
1:8962
Hear, O Lord, my prayer and my supplication.
1:8963
Supplication appears to be something other than prayer.
1:8964
He sends up a supplication who has recognized that he himself is in want and deficient, that he may be filled.
1:8965
But he who prays possesses this form as well, and yet at times he also asks for the possession of goods that are above him.
1:8966
He who asks to receive something from God either asks to receive what he does not have, or asks concerning what he has, that it may remain with him.
1:8967
This, properly speaking, is prayer.
1:8968
It is a petition sent up together with the one who prays giving glory to God — to Him to whom he sends up his prayer.
1:8969
O Lord our God, grant us peace, for Thou hast rendered all things unto us.
1:8970
A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet.
1:8971
O Lord, I have heard Thy report, and I was afraid.
1:8972
In the midst of two living creatures Thou shalt be known; as the years draw near Thou shalt be recognized.
1:8973
But when, being in need, one asks only for those things which he lacks, then the petition sent up is a supplication, as it were a prayer.
1:8974
It is possible to understand this too in the following way:
1:8975
Those who ask for more bodily things make supplication — such as for health.
1:8976
And as those who are in need, they often deem themselves worthy to receive these things.
1:8977
But he who wishes to have fullness —
1:8978
A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet.
1:8979
O Lord, I have heard Thy report, and I was afraid.
1:8980
In the midst of two living creatures Thou shalt be known; as the years draw near Thou shalt be recognized.
1:8981
O Lord our God, grant us peace, for Thou hast rendered all things unto us.
1:8982
Since I too, as one deficient, ask that certain things be given to me — for I am still yet under instruction — hear my supplication.
1:8983
But since I am about to obtain the things in which I am deficient, having become full I then ask for greater things — I ask for heavenly things, and I say:
1:8984
Our Father who art in the heavens, hallowed be Thy name — this is not asked by one who is deficient.
1:8985
And then it comes, whenever God reigns by our own working.
1:8986
Beholding myself deficient, I weep, producing that godly grief and fashioning the sorrow that is according to God, which works repentance unto salvation, in accordance with which I say:
1:8987
Every night I will wash my bed; with my tears I will drench my couch.
1:8988
And since he who falls short of perfect and utmost virtue also mourns again, saying:
1:8989
We who are in the tabernacle groan; and again:
1:8990
Thou hast set my tears before Thee, as in Thy promise.
1:8991
As in Thy promise Thou hast set my tears.
1:8992
And what sort of tears are these but those of them that weep, that they may laugh? For blessed are they that weep now, for they shall laugh.
1:8993
These have set their tears as in the promise, that they may laugh, that they may be filled with joy unspeakable and full of glory.
1:8994
Be not silent, for I am a sojourner in the land.
1:8995
Be not silent while I pray, while I supplicate, while I weep and shed such tears as they who sow in gladness shall reap.
1:8996
Be not silent, therefore, but assent and grant the things I have asked for.
1:8997
For being silent sometimes signifies delay and forbearance; and at other times it signifies forbearance also, when it is exercised in regard to sins.
1:8998
These things thou didst, and I was silent.
1:8999
That is to say, I did not repay thee in kind.
1:9000
If I were a settled inhabitant, I would not even dare to ask and to pray.
1:9001
But settled inhabitants are those who are liable to wickedness and impiety.
1:9002
From the face of the north evils shall be kindled upon those who dwell in the land.
1:9003
Not upon those who sojourn.
1:9004
And in the Revelation of John it is said three times in succession:
1:9005
Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell upon the earth.
1:9006
If, then, I were a settled inhabitant, I would not have said:
1:9007
And a stranger, as all my fathers were.
1:9008
The sojourner and the stranger are one and the same.
1:9009
Paul at any rate, in the Epistle to the Hebrews, having made a catalogue of all those who were well-pleasing through faith, called them sojourners and strangers.
1:9010
None of those is a settled inhabitant, none is a native resident, but a stranger.
1:9011
He has come from elsewhere into this place; he was not born here.
1:9012
Therefore all the fathers who lived according to virtue were sojourners in the land and strangers, such as the patriarchs and others who begot offspring according to divine instruction, such as prophets, teachers, lawgivers.
1:9013
Let me be, that I may find refreshment before I depart and am no more.
1:9014
Here he calls praiseworthy that refreshment which is equivalent to this:
1:9015
I have found refreshment for myself, says Ephrem.
1:9016
But that other refreshment is blameworthy.
1:9017
One is refreshed, then, in a praiseworthy manner whenever he enjoys virtue, whenever he delights himself in the Lord, whenever he receives an impression and a conception of the paradise of delight.
1:9018
Since, then, I lack many things — for on this account I send up a supplication, that I may be filled with the things I lack —
1:9019
For this too he said at the beginning of the psalm:
1:9020
Make me to know, O Lord, my end, and the number of my days, what it is, that I may know what I lack.
1:9021
When he knows the things he lacks and acquires these, and has them ready to be cultivated, he finds refreshment.
1:9022
Let me be, to remain in this life, that having been instructed I may find refreshment before I depart from this life and am no more.
1:9023
I shall not be — that is, not such as I wish to be:
1:9024
For the soul does not pass into non-existence, but hear:
1:9025
The words must be understood in accordance with those who speak them.
1:9026
If the righteous man and the wise man according to God says:
1:9027
In all things I am zealous that I may grow rich — do not understand what is said with reference to sensible riches.
1:9028
But if it be some other person, either a man of business or a physician —
1:9029
And this holy man, then, is wise.
1:9030
He says, at any rate, that he has no other endurance than the Lord, and that his subsistence is from Him.
1:9031
This wise man, then, even if he should say this—namely:
1:9032
'Let me be, that I may live, having placed my hope in this life alone, so that I may find refreshment by eating and drinking,' according to the saying:
1:9033
'Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die'—yet the refreshment too must be taken in a manner suited to the person speaking, as also the 'Let me be' and the 'that I may no longer exist.'
1:9034
'I shall no longer exist'—he does not mean this, that:
1:9035
'I am passing into utter destruction, I am collapsing into non-existence,' but rather:
1:9036
'I no longer exist in the manner in which I pray to be brought into being.'
1:9037
'Therefore, before I depart in this way—depart from this life—and no longer exist as I had prayed to become,
1:9038
admonish me, discipline me, that I may no longer exist'—for by no means does he mean that he should pass into utter destruction.
1:9039
'Waiting, I waited for the Lord, and he attended to me.'
1:9040
擺在我們面前的這篇詩,既可由每一位堅忍地、以宏大心志度過此生的聖徒來誦說,也可由那屬主的人來誦說;
The psalm before us might be spoken both by every saint who has passed his life steadfastly and with great courage of soul, and by the Man of the Lord;
1:9041
for the Apostle, taking phrases from it in the Epistle to the Hebrews, has understood them as spoken concerning Christ:
1:9042
'Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,' down to:
1:9043
'In the roll of the book it is written concerning me.'
1:9044
The psalm is spoken by a single persona.
1:9045
The same persona who began it proclaims and sings it all the way to the end of the psalm.
1:9046
He speaks, therefore, in thanksgiving toward God:
1:9047
'Waiting, I waited for the Lord, and he hearkened to my supplication.'
1:9048
The phrase 'waiting, I waited' bears this kind of meaning, as if one were to say:
1:9049
'Physician-like I healed, scholar-like I wrote.'
1:9050
There are those who wait, yet not in a patient manner, but either out of great insensibility or sometimes for the sake of vainglory.
1:9051
'I will not hand over my body that I may boast.'
1:9052
有人為了得著稱讚,甘願捨棄身體與魂,卻並非以真正忍耐等候的方式來等候;
For the sake of praise, casting forth his body and soul, he did not wait in a truly waiting manner;
1:9053
he waited knowingly and as one ought, not in order to gain a catch from men, or glory, or praises.
1:9054
He, then, who thus waits as he ought—as when I say that:
1:9055
'According to wisdom I acted wisely.'
1:9056
It was said in the preceding psalm that God is the patient endurance of the righteous man:
1:9057
'And now, what is my patient waiting? Is it not the Lord?' He who, out of this patient endurance, bears with steadfastness the painful things that befall him will say:
1:9058
'Waiting, I waited for the Lord.'
1:9059
'With a disposition of patient endurance I bore also the painful things.'
1:9060
For many, as I said, bear painful things for some ulterior reason.
1:9061
God, therefore, is the patient endurance of the saint.
1:9062
And indeed in Jeremiah it is said:
1:9063
'A throne of glory exalted is our sanctuary, the hope of Israel, O Lord of Israel.'
1:9064
He, then, who has been given his character according to this patient endurance, and is named after it, will say:
1:9065
'Waiting, I waited for the Lord.'
1:9066
He who serves God confesses him to be Lord through his very deeds and thoughts and words.
1:9067
這樣的人,是在聖靈裡稱耶穌為主;
Such a one, in the Holy Spirit, calls Jesus Lord;
1:9068
for not everyone who names Jesus 'Lord' does so in the Spirit.
1:9069
Hypocrites, indeed, also do this.
1:9070
'Many will say to me in that day:'
1:9071
And what does he say to them? 'I never knew you.'
1:9072
'I never knew you as having served me.'
1:9073
'Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?' He, therefore, who calls Jesus Lord in this way—by doing the will of his Father in heaven—that one calls him Lord in the Holy Spirit.
1:9074
'And he hearkened to my supplication.'
1:9075
Being in want, I was asking for something, and God, giving heed to my supplication, has fulfilled these things.
1:9076
Since indeed 'waiting, I waited' . . .
1:9077
the commandment concerning which the Savior spoke:
1:9078
'He who has endured to the end, this one shall be saved.'
1:9079
The word 'I waited' belongs to one who has come to rest.
1:9080
And what sort of persona did the Lord have?—For we have not said it out of necessity.
1:9081
那麼,你若當作是從救主的位格說出來的——因為他只到達「前情」的地步,並沒有落在情慾的轄制之下;
If, then, you take it as spoken from the persona of the Savior—for he went only as far as pre-passion, he did not become subject to the passions;
1:9082
for indeed 'Jesus began to be amazed and distressed.'
1:9083
Such things came upon him only as far as a beginning.
1:9084
我們並不說「前情」會發生在那不改變者的裡面;
We do not say that pre-passion arises in that which is unchangeable;
1:9085
for we say that no other is unchangeable besides the Trinity.
1:9086
Since, then, the soul which Jesus assumed is other than the Trinity, it is by nature capable of receiving pre-passion and a beginning of being amazed and distressed.
1:9087
'In place of the joy set before him he endured a cross, despising the shame.'
1:9088
If he had not become one who shrinks back in pre-passion, there would have been no deed of manly virtue nor any prize.
1:9089
The phrase 'he attended to me'?—it stands for 'he assented.'
1:9090
'And he brought me up out of a pit of misery and from miry clay.'
1:9091
若聖徒中的每一位都說這話,他所謂「禍患的坑」乃是指屬地的境地;
If each of the saints says this, by 'pit of misery' he means the earthly region;
1:9092
for a pit is that place where the waters falling from above are gathered together.
1:9093
所以在神聖經卷的許多處,屬地的境地與陰間都以這名稱來表明;
In many places of the divine Scriptures, then, both the earthly region and Hades are signified by this name;
1:9094
for when, in the twenty-ninth psalm, it is said from the persona of the Savior according to his humanity:
1:9095
'You saved me from among those going down into the pit,'
1:9096
'for I myself do not go down into the pit,'
1:9097
and this appears yet more clearly from the verse:
1:9098
'I was reckoned among those going down into the pit; I became like a helpless man, free among the dead.'
1:9099
「我本不屬於那些被帶下坑的人,只是被算為與他們同列」;
'I am not of those being led into the pit, but I was reckoned' [among them];
1:9100
'I reckoned myself among those.'
1:9101
I became, then, as a man without help.
1:9102
Though He was not without help, He became as one without help; for when the Jews came to seize Him, had He not surrendered Himself, they would not have been able to lay hold of Him.
1:9103
For when the Jews came to arrest Him, had He not given Himself up, they could not have taken Him.
1:9104
If He is free among the dead, He is not among those who by nature come to Hades through choice and deed, but He reckoned Himself into this condition of His own accord.
1:9105
He brought me up, therefore, out of the pit of misery.
1:9106
He who buffeted his own body and brought it into subjection, and while walking upon the earth had already gained his citizenship in the heavens—that man was brought up out of the pit of misery and out of the mire of matter.
1:9107
He was brought up out of the world and out of matter and out of the clay from which the earthen body has been fashioned.
1:9108
And God formed man of dust from the earth.
1:9109
Remember that Thou hast fashioned me as clay.
1:9110
And Jesus too will say these things according to His humanity:
1:9111
我進入了困苦的坑,把自己算入其中,為要使他們脫離困苦、脫離物質的泥沼;
I came into the pit of misery, I reckoned Myself in, that I might set them free from misery and from the mire of matter;
1:9112
for on their account I came into the mire of matter.
1:9113
When, therefore, this corruptible body is changed into incorruption, he who is clothed with it is no longer held down by clay and misery, but has been delivered from these things.
1:9114
And He set my feet upon a rock.
1:9115
And let this be said also concerning the righteous man in general.
1:9116
By 'rock' in these passages we must understand the unbreakable and indivisible Word of God, whom no tempest or towering wave can move.
1:9117
所以在聖經中屢次題到一種磐石,是感官所不能領會的;
Often, then, in the sacred writings mention is made of a rock that cannot be grasped by the senses;
1:9118
for when the holy one says in thanksgiving to God:
1:9119
'Upon a rock Thou hast exalted me,' he does not mean this:
1:9120
that having lifted me up onto the sensible rock He set me there, but upon the unbreakable and indivisible Word.
1:9121
保羅解明了這磐石,說出祂是誰,就是基督;
Paul interpreted this rock and said what it is, namely that it is Christ;
1:9122
for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.
1:9123
And again this same hymn-writer, after other things, says:
1:9124
Their mighty ones were swallowed up close by the rock.
1:9125
Those of the Egyptians who drew near to the rock were shown to be nothing.
1:9126
And just as the rod of Aaron swallowed up the rods of the Egyptian sorcerers—that is, it prevailed over them—
1:9127
death was swallowed up, Israel was swallowed up.
