然而他們說,他們的渴慕並不止於此;
But they say that their longing does not stop at this point;
1:9790
因為他們在某種意義上仍舊遠離神——是在關係與心境上,而非在地域上;
for they are still in a certain manner far from God—by relation and disposition, not by place;
1:9791
因為沒有一物在空間上遠離神;
for nothing is locally far from God;
1:9792
for he fills heaven and earth.
1:9793
Wherefore he who has given heed to him says:
1:9794
「我往哪裡去躲避你的靈?我往哪裡逃、躲避你的面呢?我若升到天上,你在那裡;
'Where shall I go from your Spirit? And from your face where shall I flee? If I ascend into heaven, you are there;
1:9795
if I descend into Hades, you are present.'
1:9796
Those, then, who in this life have received a glimpse of the age to come thirst nobly for God, seeing themselves as it were far off, inasmuch as they are still burdened with the wickedness of the world and the weight of the world and its corruptibility.
1:9797
And this too, since among the feasts of the Hebrews it was a custom for all to appear three times in the year:
1:9798
'In the year every male of yours shall appear before me.'
1:9799
'None shall appear before me empty.'
1:9800
No one shall appear before him empty.
1:9801
Since, then, this man also longs for the springs of waters, he prays to be filled, that he may come and appear before the face of God, being no longer empty.
1:9802
He therefore asks — sometimes of no other than …
1:9803
When, then, shall I attain the perfect good, that having been seen before the face …
1:9804
… of the graces given by Him? My tears have become my bread day and night.
1:9805
Since I knew that I was still left behind, away from the face of God …
1:9806
… weeping that leads to the taking up of virtue, the weeping that comes from toil and …
1:9807
According to this signification, then, it is said:
1:9808
Those who sow in tears shall reap in exultation.
1:9809
Going forth they went and wept, bearing their seed.
1:9810
Coming they shall come in exultation, bearing their sheaves.
1:9811
They sow in tears, with sweat casting down the seeds of virtue, the seeds of the Spirit.
1:9812
所以當他們收割的時候,就不再勞苦了;
When therefore they reap, they toil no more;
1:9813
for they have attained the end that was zealously pursued.
1:9814
But when going forth we went, we wept, bearing their seed.
1:9815
When we were still making progress, having cast down the seed, we awaited the perfecting of the fruit.
1:9816
But when we came in exultation, we bore the sheaves, no longer the seeds.
1:9817
These tears, then, become nourishment for the one who longs to see God and to be looked upon by Him.
1:9818
My tears have become my bread day and night.
1:9819
我不是膚淺地哭泣,也不是在歡樂之中哭泣——彷彿有時放縱於享樂,有時又哭泣悔改——乃是連在愁苦之中也哭泣;
I do not weep superficially, nor amid pleasant things — so as at one time to give myself to delight and at another to the weeping of repentance — but even amid gloomy things;
1:9820
for gloomy things are called night.
1:9821
You have therefore in another psalm also a voice speaking thus:
1:9822
You will feed us with the bread of tears, and give us tears to drink in measure.
1:9823
The tears of repentance too must be brought forth in measure, that they may become bread and drink.
1:9824
And henceforth there will be certain other things that succeed the toil — the yields that come to be from the tears.
1:9825
When it was said to me daily, 'Where is your God?' — for this reason too I brought forth so many tears to become nourishment for me, because I heard them saying to me:
1:9826
'Where is your God?' This too Sennacherib and Rabshakeh said:
1:9827
「你的神在哪裡呢?」以色列人哪,你的神又在哪裡,好拯救你呢?所以眼淚成了我的食物,卻有分量,我既喝它,也吃它;
'Where is your God?' And you too, O Israelite, where is your God, that He may deliver you? Tears therefore became nourishment for me, but in measure, and I both drank them and ate them;
1:9828
for I knew that something productive of joy succeeds the tears and the toil of them.
1:9829
These things I remembered, and I poured out my soul upon me.
1:9830
When I came to be in the recollection and remembrance of these who spoke reproaches, these my enemies, I did not go outward, I did not pour out my soul outside, but upon myself I poured it out.
1:9831
I was troubled and I did not speak; and what Paul says:
1:9832
'But we ourselves in ourselves have had the sentence of death, that we should not be trusting in ourselves.'
1:9833
This indeed is said also concerning Job:
1:9834
Job sinned in nothing; and secondly:
1:9835
Here he calls the mind 'the soul.'
1:9836
'Receiving the end, salvation of souls, for those who believe' — he thus named the very substances that ensoul the bodies.
1:9837
'Having purified our souls in obedience to the truth' — he means the minds.
1:9838
In this way, then, men are accustomed to speak also of 'good-souled' people.
1:9839
'But you, O man of equal soul with me' —
1:9840
he means the equal mind and disposition.
1:9841
'For I will pass through into the place of the wondrous tabernacle, as far as the house of God.'
1:9842
我們曾屢次說過,諸美德的成全就是神的殿,而帳幕則是那長進的過程;
We have often said that the perfecting of the virtues is the house of God, while the tabernacle is progress;
1:9843
for to those who are progressing and passing from place to place the tabernacle is a dwelling.
1:9844
……神,他們在那稱為「見證」的帳幕裡事奉祂;
… God, they worshipped Him in a tabernacle that was called 'of witness';
1:9845
for the tabernacle of witness …
1:9846
we often speak of 'witness' …
1:9847
journeying therefore through the wilderness …
1:9848
that they might worship God there, send up their prayers, and perform the sacred rites …
1:9849
that from there they might have God assenting to them.
1:9850
But when they arrived in the holy land …
1:9851
the men themselves too came to have no longer tabernacles but houses, being perfected …
1:9852
the worship of God came to be no longer in a tabernacle but in a house.
1:9853
When the corruptible body has received its end, there is no longer any need of tabernacles.
1:9854
When God shall become all in all …
1:9855
so that He may not become irrational among the irrational — there are no corruptible bodies, that He may not become corruptible among things corruptible, but He becomes all in all.
1:9856
But He becomes in all not by way of place, but by being partaken of; neither does His body partake of Him, nor an irrational animal, still less a soulless thing.
1:9857
It is well too that he said 'wondrous':
1:9858
since it is divine — since this tabernacle is divine — it is worthy of wonder.
1:9859
The advances that become ends of great goals, becoming ends by yet other advances, are above ends and have something wondrous, so that the same thing is both tabernacle and house, both progress and end.
1:9860
with a voice of exultation and confession, the sound of those keeping festival.
1:9861
Not as it chances, nor with any random condition, does my passing over come to be, but with a voice of exultation and confession.
1:9862
There is no lamentation when the passing over and the eager haste toward the house of God takes place, but exultation.
1:9863
Abraham indeed thus rejoiced to see my day, and seeing it he was glad.
1:9864
He saw the day of the Lord, having arrived at his house, at the perfect faith.
1:9865
The word 'confession' in the Scriptures signifies two things, not to say a third signification as well.
1:9866
It calls the declaration made concerning sins 'confession,' as when it says:
1:9867
'Having gathered yourself together, make confession over your sins.'
1:9868
This, then, is found in Barnabas, in the epistle attributed to him:
1:9869
'Having gathered yourself together, make confession over your sins.'
1:9870
'Confess your sins to one another.'
1:9871
'My sin I made known to You, and my transgression I did not cover over.'
1:9872
'I said: I will confess against myself my transgression to the Lord.'
1:9873
He makes confession, weeping bitterly and lamenting over his own former sins.
1:9874
It also indicates thanksgiving, as when the Savior says:
1:9875
'I will confess to You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden divine things from the wise and understanding, and have revealed them to babes.'
1:9876
He does not give thanks for this—that the divine things have been hidden from the wise and understanding—but rather that, while those men supposed themselves to see, these things have been revealed to the babes.
1:9877
These are those from among the nations who have believed; while the wise and the understanding, from whom the divine things have been hidden, are those of the circumcision.
1:9878

1:9998
There is in the soul a concept at one time apart from being true or false, but at another time already a concept in which one of these two must necessarily be present.
1:9999
Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against a nation that is not holy.
1:10000
This psalm can be recited from the person of the Savior.
1:10001
In both ways, the sacred and the virtuous.
1:10002
The number six was mentioned—how it is perfect.
1:10003
But the seven is incorruptible and virgin, resembling that which is without mother and without father.
1:10004
For the seven is by nature neither able to beget nor to be begotten.
1:10005
A virgin is she who does not bear; a virgin incorruptible.
1:10006
For this reason often …
1:10007
… of us into the six units, but into the nature of the number.
1:10008
We say that they came to be, not because God needed time …
1:10009
As soon as He willed, those things also came into being.
1:10010
All that You willed, You did.
1:10011
His willing alone suffices to bring a thing into existence.
1:10012
This is also for the sake of sequence and harmony...
1:10013
The number forty-two, then, is set down here.
1:10014
For this reason also, in the genealogy...
1:10015
For it was fitting that the one born of a virgin should also be perfect...
1:10016
But every conception comes to pass through the joining together with pleasure.
1:10017
From Abraham to David there are in fact fourteen generations, but from David to the deportation to Babylon there are seventeen successions.
1:10018
And since he had need of the number fourteen...
1:10019
For the sake of the mystery, he removed the three generations.
1:10020
And again, from the deportation to Babylon until Christ, fourteen generations are not found, but thirteen — indeed only twelve in all.
1:10021
But if you also remove Jesus himself, three generations are lacking to complete the number of the two sevens.
1:10022
For in one place he removed from the total, but in another he added names to it.
1:10023
But it was for the sake of the correspondence of the sevens that the omission of the three names occurred...
1:10024
In the succession he calls Joram Ozias.
1:10025
The name of Ozias seems to bear a resemblance to that of Ochozias.

1:10028
'Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against a nation that is not holy.'
1:10029

'Woe to the sinful nation, a people full of sins.'
1:10031
Since, therefore, [the nation] set itself against him...
1:10032
He wishes to be judged on this account.
1:10033
For they have nothing of which to accuse him.
1:10034
The accusations are against themselves.
1:10035
'This man is not from God, because he does not keep the Sabbath.'
1:10036
But what is it to keep the Sabbath? On the Sabbath ought one not to raise the dead?...
1:10037

'He casts out the demons by Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons' — in saying this they confess that he does indeed cast them out.
1:10039

For they were not able to say that...
1:10040
...being cleansed by his rebuke against the demons.
1:10041
'Do we not rightly say that you are a Samaritan and have a demon?' A Samaritan was a guardian.
1:10042

'...neither did sin, nor commit it, nor was there deceit in his mouth.'
1:10045

1:10046
...at one time accusing Judas, when we set it forth from the one hundred and eighth psalm.
1:10047
It is: 'O God, do not pass over my praise in silence, for the mouth of the sinner and the mouth of the deceitful has been opened against me' — speaking concerning one person.
1:10048
'They spoke against me with a deceitful tongue.'
1:10049
'For if an enemy had reproached me, I would have borne it.'
1:10050
'But you, a man of like soul with me.'
1:10051

And he calls him also deceitful, because...
1:10055
He betrayed his benefactor and teacher.
1:10056
'From the deceitful and unjust man deliver me.'
1:10057

Delivered to the fire, they were rescued, since they did not deny.
1:10062
Thus we have also expounded that saying in the Gospel:
1:10063
'Deliver us from the evil one,' and:
1:10064
'Do not lead us into temptation.'
1:10065

1:10071
For this reason I am rational, since my Father is rational; and for this reason I am a living being, since my Father is a living being.
1:10072
If then you are my strength, why have you rejected me? Tell the cause of the rejection.
1:10073
For I am neither the unholy nation, nor the unjust and deceitful man.
1:10074

'I am the light of the world; I have come as light into the world.'
1:10083

'For these led me,' that we may say that:
1:10109
These are My body, when . . .
1:10110
since to the holy mountain someone . . .
1:10111
. . . advances are signified through the tabernacles.
1:10112
. . . the plural form indicates the various dwelling-places that are with the Father . . .
1:10113
. . . that those who follow me may arrive there — not that I should come to be there, but that . . .
1:10114
'And I will go in to the altar of God, to the God who gladdens my youth.'
1:10115
But this altar, to which one goes in, is an interior one.
1:10116
an altar, from which one of the Seraphim took a coal.
1:10117
There is an altar in heaven, and the souls of those beheaded for the testimony of Jesus are beside it.
1:10118
And the passage makes clear that those who have been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus . . .
1:10119
For as sacrificial victims they are beside the altar.
1:10120
But he who has been beheaded for the testimony . . .
1:10121
This altar, then, is an interior one.
1:10122
. . . in imitation of another altar.
1:10123
For all the things pertaining to the . . .
1:10124
. . . he made according to the pattern that was shown to him on the mountain . . .
1:10125
the sacrifice of praise and that of righteousness is enjoined.
1:10126
'For offer to God a sacrifice of praise'; 'Offer the sacrifice of righteousness.'
1:10127
'I will go in, therefore, to the altar of God, then to God who gladdens my youth.'
1:10128
For he who has departed from the shadow of the Law and from the exterior altar . . .
1:10129
'What to Me is the multitude of your sacrifices? I am full'; he goes in . . .
1:10130
as a priest after the order of Melchizedek he will say:
1:10131
'I will go in to the altar of God' . . .
1:10132
better than the things that appear.
1:10133
from the sensible things, from the things according to the letter, to the altar of God.
1:10134
He who has transcended the oldness of the letter — which succeeded the shadow of the Law — and has come to know it as an old covenant, will say these things.
1:10135
'I will confess to Thee, O God, upon the harp.'
1:10136
Since I will go in to Thy altar having a youthfulness that has come to me from the newness of the Spirit, for this reason I will confess to Thee in thanksgiving upon the harp.
1:10137
And I have said many times of the harp that it signifies the practical virtue, or the body that is struck by the soul which has been made musical.
1:10138
Here 'confession' signifies thanksgiving.
1:10139
For it belongs to one who has obtained his requests.
1:10140
He prayed that the cause of his being cast off and of his going about in mourning might be known; he prayed that the light and the truth might be sent to him, since these guided him; he prayed to go in to the altar of God and to gain experience of the tabernacles of God and of the holy mountain.
1:10141
Since, therefore, he has come to experience these good requests — God having given them to him, and he not having found them by himself — for this reason he confesses to Him in thanksgiving, striking both the senses (which are strings, being strings of a harp) and the manifold thoughts, or the members.
1:10142
For whenever each of the members has been tuned toward virtue, it is a string stretched taut, that it may be struck harmoniously by the plectrum of truth.
1:10143
'Why art thou cast down, O my soul, and why dost thou trouble me? Hope in God, for I will confess to Him.'
1:10144
He asked that certain things might come to be his, and while he was still speaking He gave assent; and thereafter, even before he received, he was so faithfully disposed as though he had already received.
1:10145
He rouses up, therefore, his own soul and says:
1:10146
'Why art thou cast down, O my soul?' Since, then, I have resolved to confess to Him, hope in Him; look forward to the things of thanksgiving coming to be thine.
1:10147
'The salvation of my countenance is my God.'
1:10148
Thou art the salvation of my true countenance.
1:10149
And the light is the salvation of the inner man, concerning which he says:
1:10150
'The wisdom of a man will enlighten his countenance.'
1:10151
And again the holy one says that we have the eyes of the heart enlightened, and that with unveiled face we behold as in a mirror the glory of the Lord.
1:10152
When the face is made to reflect as in a mirror by the corresponding and divine glory, and is enlightened by wisdom, then 'God is my salvation.'
1:10153
Let others, delivered from sickness, say:
1:10154
'My salvation is the physician'; and let another, delivered from tempest and storm, say:
1:10155
'My salvation is the helmsman.'
1:10156
For the sons of Korah, a psalm for understanding.
1:10157
Concerning the end it has often been said that it is the ultimate object of desire, for the sake of which all other things come to be, while it itself is for the sake of nothing.
1:10158
He who knows the end knows also the things that produce the end, the things that come before it.
1:10159
Again, the transition is to accomplish through progressive advances.
1:10160
One must therefore be understanding.
1:10161
'O God, with our ears we have heard, our fathers have declared to us.'
1:10162
'With their own ears,' say the holy ones, 'we have heard the words of God.'
1:10163
In addition to the common faculty of hearing, an increase of ears takes place whenever one is able to hear scientific discourses.
1:10164
The physician, hearing medical discourses, has a medical ear, but another does not.
1:10165
'The instruction of the Lord opens my ears'—he does not speak of the sensible hearing, but of that which is able to hear the scientific words of God.
1:10166
所以「用我們的耳朵」這句話必須如此領會,並非贅語;
Thus, then, must the phrase 'with our ears' be understood, and it is not superfluous;
1:10167
for it does not signify what already exists, but what has come to be added.
1:10168
And observe indeed how the holy one speaks:
1:10169
'The instruction of the Lord opens my ears.'
1:10170
'The Lord gives me a tongue of instruction, that I may know when it is fitting to speak a word; he appointed it for me in the morning, he added to me an ear to hear.'
1:10171
'And the instruction of the Lord opens my ears.'
1:10172
The ear given by way of addition is scientific; it hears words in a manner befitting God.
1:10173
And when this has been added, his instruction thereafter opens the ears—this added thing, the other ear, the scientific one, that hears in a manner befitting God, that is able to say:
1:10174
for it does not belong to everyone to say this, but only to him who has received the addition of an ear from God.
1:10175
Having these things in mind, the Saviour said:
1:10176
'He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'
1:10177
But not all had the ears that could hear the veiled words of Jesus, the words proclaimed in parables.
1:10178
Whence Porphyry raved in this matter also.
1:10179
'O God, with our ears we have heard'—
1:10180
with our own ears, not those we share in common with the irrational animals, but those attuned to the scientific words of God.
1:10181
And in the case of sensible tongues too this holds true:
1:10182
the Egyptian hears the language of the Egyptians with his own ears, he hears with his own ear.
1:10183
那麼在這裡,我們是否要按那有真知識的意思來理解呢?——那些從事教導的人,是以自己的身分代表眾人發言;
Here, then, are we to take it according to the scientific sense?—Those engaged in teaching represent all persons in their own person;
1:10184
因為不可能每一個人都同樣充滿著那完全相同的罪;
for it is not possible that each individual be full of the very same sins;
1:10185
for there are sins that are contrary to one another and cannot coexist.
