We have renounced the hidden things of shame.
1:2353
Not only the manifest reproaches and things that cause shame have we renounced, but the hidden ones also.
1:2354
For some, the things of drunkenness are hidden.
1:2355
When they glory in their wine—such as were those of whom Paul writes, whose glory is in their shame—in the things wherein they ought to be ashamed, in these very things they wish to be glorified.
1:2356
At any rate one may find men wishing to be glorified for their heavy drinking.
1:2357
在何種意義上算是隱藏的呢?——我是就雙重意義來說「隱藏」之事的;
In what sense hidden?—I spoke of hidden things in a twofold sense;
1:2358
there are sins in the thoughts.
1:2359
Not only, then, does the earnest man renounce even the wicked practical deeds, but the hidden things too, so as even to send up a prayer:
1:2360
Cleanse thou me from my secret faults.
1:2361
In another sense, the things that are unknown are called hidden.
1:2362
Having taken courage concerning all his manifest transgressions, that they are gone from him, the holy one says:
1:2363
Who can understand his transgressions? Rare is he who understands his transgressions.
1:2364
Since, then, it is possible that even I be ignorant of them, cleanse me from these.
1:2365
求你攔阻你僕人,不犯那些外來的罪;
Spare thy servant from strangers;
1:2366
for they are strangers to me, to my very being, both they themselves and those who work them against me.
1:2367
若它們不轄制我;
If they do not have dominion over me;
1:2368
if the hidden things do not have dominion over me, then shall I be blameless.
1:2369
And I shall be cleansed from great sin.
1:2370
We were saying that these are in the thoughts, and are so as to be unknown to the one who has them.
1:2371
How, then, is he who is cleansed from these cleansed from great sin? You know that 'great' belongs to the class of relative terms.
1:2372
In relation to one who wishes to be wholly pure, even the slight sins seem to be great.
1:2373
And I once took an illustration such as this, that:
1:2374
If a garment already have filth upon it from elsewhere—and often so—even if someone touch it, even if he lay hold of it, it does not seem to have taken on anything.
1:2375
But if it have just been brought back from the fuller's, then even the touch of the fingers seems to be a blemish, seems to make something unclean upon it.
1:2376
The wholly pure man, therefore, reckons even the slight thing in his thought to be a great sin.
1:2377
It is possible also to state in this way a thought able to profit everyone:
1:2378
In comparison with sin in deed, sin in the thoughts is exceedingly small.
1:2379
If someone has looked upon a woman with desire and has checked the appetite short of the pre-passion, he will not commit the deed.
1:2380
If, then, this very pre-passion be stripped away, one is cleansed from great sin, is cleansed from sin in deed.
1:2381
He who says these things had come to such purity that he could say somewhere:
1:2382
If I beheld iniquity in my heart, let the Lord not hear me.
1:2383
As though he brings upon himself something harmful and a punishment, if he holds iniquity in his heart.
1:2384
For this reason God heard me, with something further understood alongside:
1:2385
For this reason God heard me, because I did not behold iniquity in my heart.
1:2386
If I beheld iniquity in my heart, let him not receive my prayer.
1:2387
For this reason, then, he heard me.
1:2388
我說這話,是因為那將信靠置於神身上的人,凡值得成就的事都能正當地成就;
I said this, that the one who has his confidence in God accomplishes rightly all things worthy of being accomplished;
1:2389
for I do not call it accomplishing rightly to do those things which God forbids.
1:2390
And let them be put to shame and perish.
1:2391
But what follows upon being put to shame and perishing, except to know that the Lord's name is? God at any rate says to a certain soul that behaves insolently after doing and thinking evil things:
1:2392
Be ashamed and receive your dishonour.
1:2393
For you did those things which bring dishonour upon you.
1:2394
Be ashamed, then, at what you have done, and receive your dishonour, not saying:
1:2395
I have not sinned, so as to make God say:
1:2396
Behold, I am brought to judgement against you because you say:
1:2397
And I am brought to judgement against you, not that I may condemn you, but that, being put to shame, you may cease from your dishonour.
1:2398
Neither let my enemies laugh at me to scorn.
1:2399
My enemies laugh me to scorn then, when, professing to have put my trust in you, I nevertheless do the deeds that produce shame.
1:2400
The enemies are mine; I am not theirs.
1:2401
For this reason the Saviour also says:
1:2402
Love your enemies.
1:2403
這附加的話似乎多餘;
The addition seems superfluous;
1:2404
but since the servants of Christ ought not to have enemies, while others wish to be their enemies, let them love those.
1:2405
That passage in Aristotle somehow seems to be well suited to civic conduct.
1:2406
Speaking about what is primary and what is consequent, he said:
1:2407
我們首要地願我們的朋友是義的,即便他們遠離;
We wish primarily that our friends be righteous, even if they are far off;
1:2408
but incidentally we wish our enemies to be righteous, that they may do no harm.
1:2409
And this too we wish for our own sakes.
1:2410
But the servants of Christ pray concerning their enemies not that they may do them no harm, but that those very men may suffer no harm.
1:2411
For indeed all who wait for you shall by no means be put to shame.
1:2412
「凡」(所有)一詞在聖經中常被用作全稱否定;
The word 'all' is often taken in Scripture in place of the universal negation;
1:2413
for we do not say this, that of those who wait some are put to shame and some are not, as the particular negation teaches which says:
1:2414
Not all men are righteous.
1:2415
None of those who wait for you is put to shame.
1:2416
And continually in Scripture the universal negation is signified by means of the universal affirmation taken by conversion.
1:2417
You know that the affirmation by conversion often follows upon the simple negation.
1:2418
Let all who transgress the law in vain be put to shame.
1:2419
Understand 'transgressing the law in vain' in this way:
1:2420
惡是徒然地被施行的,既不能帶來榮耀,也不能成就任何應許;
wickedness is carried out in vain, not so as to lead to glory, not so as to fulfil a promise;
1:2421
it has no substance of its own; it has its being in something else.
1:2422
If, then, the one who holds wickedness should will to cast it off, it no longer subsists.
1:2423
然而又有些人,或出於無知,或較為詭辯地說,德性也是如此,說它同樣把存在寄於他物之中;
But some again, either through ignorance or more sophistically, say that virtue too is of this sort, that it also has its being in another;
1:2424
for it belongs to God essentially, to the Trinity.
1:2425
But by participation in the Trinity men possess the good and the just and virtue.
1:2426
所以,即便他們自己不去踐行,它仍舊存在;
Even, then, if they themselves refrain from it, it still exists;
1:2427
for in God, from whom they themselves derive their being earnest, it subsists.
1:2428
But wickedness, if it is not actively carried out, does not exist at all.
1:2429
For this reason many Scriptures teach that it does not exist:
1:2430
from which it is gathered that there are not two principles opposed in essence, nor are certain men evil by constitution, as indeed many of the heterodox hold, that no one is either good or evil by deliberate choice.
1:2431
But many absurd and impious consequences follow upon these views.
1:2432
倘若一切善人都是由本性構造而為善,惡人也是在本質上如此,那麼一切律法便是多餘的;
If all who are good are such by constitution, and the wicked are so in their essence, then all legislation is superfluous;
1:2433
for the law can neither make the good man good nor the bad man good.
1:2434
但若律法多餘,則一切勸勉、一切激勵、一切忠告,總之連人的理性本身,都被廢除了;
But if the law is superfluous, then every exhortation, every encouragement, every counsel—and in a word, the rational faculty of man—is done away with;
1:2435
for he who has no deliberate choice and no will is not rational.
1:2436
And superfluous too is the sojourning of the Saviour.
1:2437
他使善人成善嗎?——他本身已是如此;
Does he make the good man good?—he is such of himself;
1:2438
but does he make the bad man good?—the bad man is by nature incapable of receiving participation in the good.
1:2439
In vain, then, does the sinner sin.
1:2440
It is written, at any rate, in another psalm concerning that great demon himself, the devil, the cause of all wickedness:
1:2441
Break the arm of the sinner and the wicked one.
1:2442
我們屢次說過,加在那敵對權勢之上的稱號,乃是關乎抉擇的稱號;
We have often said that the names applied to the adverse power are names of deliberate choice;
1:2443
因為他被稱為「仇敵」,被稱為「魔鬼」,被稱為「撒但」,意即「那敵對者」、「罪人」;
for he is called 'enemy,' he is called 'devil,' he is named 'Satan,' which means 'the adversary,' 'sinner';
1:2444
and this name too is a name of deliberate choice.
1:2445
But it is rather with the definite article that he in particular is spoken of:
1:2446
Behold, I have given you to tread upon serpents and scorpions and upon all the power—not of an enemy, but—of the enemy.
1:2447
Deliver us—not from an evil one, but—from the evil one.
1:2448
Break the arm of the sinner and the wicked one.
1:2449
His sin shall be sought out, and it shall by no means be found because of it.
1:2450
By reason of its own nature it is not found.
1:2451
His sin is sought at some time and is not found, since it is nowhere — not because it has removed itself into another place, but because in and of itself it is not found, for it has no existence in its own right, save only in the one who commits it.
1:2452
And unrighteousness has lied to itself.
1:2453
Here we speak of 'lying' in the same way as we often say that the earth 'lies' (fails to yield).
1:2454
Unrighteousness therefore lies to itself, with the result that it no longer subsists.
1:2455
It has lied to itself on account of its own nature.
1:2456
In this way, then, those who work lawlessness act lawlessly in vain, not so as to gain anything, but rather to be harmed.
1:2457
'Make known to me your ways, O Lord.' They act lawlessly who have had no experience of the law.
1:2458
But now I am speaking of the written law, the law that instructs by teaching.
1:2459
For those who have not received this law are called lawless, as also in the verse:
1:2460
'Blessed are they whose lawless deeds are forgiven.'
1:2461
But sin that comes after the law is not called simply lawlessness (anomia), but transgression of the law (paranomia).
1:2462
'Transgressions of the law ensnare a man, and each one is bound fast by the cords of his own sins.'
1:2463
'Neither shall the transgressors of the law continue before your eyes.'
1:2464
The lawless man never at all comes into the presence of God.
1:2465
He does not come under the eyes of God, except in another sense, according to the principle of providence.
1:2466
But according to the rank of the diligent he shall not continue.
1:2467
He shall not continue in the manner of the righteous, concerning whom it is said:
1:2468
'The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous.'
1:2469
By saying 'they shall not continue' he shows that they once did exist, when they kept the law; but when they became transgressors of it, then they were cast out from the eyes of God.
1:2470
'Make known to me your ways, O Lord, and teach me your paths.'
1:2471
'Guide me into your truth.'
1:2472
The ways of God are spoken of in two senses:
1:2473
either those that lead toward him, or those which he himself travels as he goes forth among all things — as is fitting according to the principle of providence, or according to his benefiting and being present in those who are capable of receiving him.
1:2474
'I will dwell in them and walk among them.'
1:2475
And he who walks about has ways which he himself travels.
1:2476
In two senses, therefore, we speak of the ways of God: either those that lead toward him — and these are the virtues — or those which he himself treads according to his providence, judgment, governance, and gifts.
1:2477
One must therefore come to know the ways of God, with him himself making them known.
1:2478
'And teach me your paths.'
1:2479
That is, either those which are trodden by those who hasten toward you, or those which you yourself tread as you go forth in the works of your grace.
1:2480
And if it is possible to speak of yet more senses:
1:2481
You know that before teaching there must first be certain things already known.
1:2482
For the sciences and scientific demonstrations proceed from things known beforehand.
1:2483
所以,求你將你這兩種道路都指示我;
Make known to me, therefore, both of your ways;
1:2484
for in this way I shall learn your paths, following those who have trodden them — those who have gone before in good things — or as you yourself have gone before, that we may follow in your footsteps, having you as our pattern and example.
1:2485
Before teaching, then, comes making known.
1:2486
And thus they say that demonstrations and teachings arise from things already known.
1:2487
It is possible to take it in this way, that the common notions are things known beforehand.
1:2488
And indeed, whenever we test teaching, we test it by referring it to the common notions.
1:2489
且留意這事:有時教師說了某些話;
Take note, then: sometimes a teacher says something;
1:2490
and the common notion of the learner anticipates it and recognizes whether he speaks well or not well.
1:2491
You will find, therefore, even in these human, scientific demonstrations, that the sciences are not rightly conveyed if the hearers do not know beforehand what they ought to know beforehand.
1:2492
Take note, then: this too has often been said by us, that when someone learns things which he must know before the lesson, one must not speak to him in obscure words, since they are not familiar to him.
1:2493
'Guide me into your truth.'
1:2494
在實踐的美德以及那關乎心性的美德之後,便有引導進入真理之事發生;
After the practical virtues and those pertaining to disposition, the guidance into the truth takes place;
1:2495
for it says, 'Having desired wisdom, keep the commandments, and the Lord will supply it to you.'
1:2496
And wisdom and truth are one and the same.
1:2497
The Savior, at any rate, is said to be both:
1:2498
'Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.'
1:2499
'And teach me, for you are God my Savior.'
1:2500
You are my God, having created me; you are my Savior, willing that I be bettered.
1:2501
Become, then, my teacher.
1:2502
As Creator, so also Teacher.
1:2503
'And for you I have waited all the day long.'
1:2504
我一生的年日都等候你,好叫我能以你為教師和救主;
I have waited for you all the time of my life, that I might have you as teacher and savior;
1:2505
for to you I have lifted up my soul, not to another.
1:2506
I have entreated no other to make known to me your ways and to teach me your paths, but I have deemed you worthy to become my teacher in these things as well.
1:2507
In many places the whole time of our life is called 'a day,' according to what is said:
1:2508
'For your sake we are put to death all the day long,' where the Apostle has used 'day' for 'every day' (the whole of time).
1:2509
And the whole time of the life of the saints can be called 'day,' because they are always in illumination, being lit up by the true light of the Sun of righteousness.
1:2510
'Our age is unto the illumination of your countenance.'
1:2511
And the life that is stretched out over one's sojourn here is called an 'age' (aiōn):
1:2512
'For he shall be your servant unto the age (forever).'
1:2513
'I will by no means eat flesh unto the age,' meaning 'throughout my life.'
1:2514
Since, therefore, the time of our life has come to be for the illumination of your countenance — for we have come to proclaim beforehand your advent — our whole age has come to be unto the illumination of your countenance, for the sake of illuminating and manifesting to men your coming.
1:2515
'Remember your compassions, O Lord, and your mercies, for they are from of old.'
1:2516
For even though I have entreated and lifted up my soul to you and have deemed myself worthy that the other things be granted to me by you, yet I do not ask these things according to any merit.
1:2517
Being compassionate and merciful, you bestow these things, in accord with the verse:
1:2518
'Not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.'
1:2519
For even if we have done everything that is in our own power, it is by the mercy of God that we strive to attain their fulfillment.
1:2520
As one full of compassion, hear me; as one merciful, receive my prayers.
1:2521
'And thy mercies, for they are from everlasting.' [Ps 24:6 LXX]
1:2522
For it was not yesterday or the day before that thou didst begin to be merciful.
1:2523
Thou art eternal; thou art eternally good.
1:2524
'Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my ignorances.' [Ps 24:7 LXX]
1:2525
你看見他是為著從前的無知與過犯而祈求,訴諸於神的憐恤與慈愛;
You see that it is concerning former ignorances and sins that he prays, appealing to the compassion and mercy of God;
1:2526
for repentance is no longer that which sends up a prayer over sins still being committed.
1:2527
Repentances are made over things that have passed.
1:2528
'Remember not the sins and the ignorances which I have'—no, which I do not now have, but those of my youth.
1:2529
Of whatever age he may be who is in ignorance and who sins, he is young—young in the youthfulness of his mind, in the newly-formed state of his disposition.
1:2530
因此人總能發現那些認罪並為著過去的過犯說出悔改之言的人正是在作這事;
One can therefore always find those who confess and utter words of repentance concerning past sins doing this very thing;
1:2531
'We have sinned, we have transgressed, we have acted impiously.'
1:2532
For how could it be otherwise? The one who repents asks for virtue.
1:2533
How then can he possess or receive virtue who is still amid his sins? 'Turn away from evil and do good.' [Ps 33:15 LXX]
1:2534
'According to thy mercy do thou remember me.' [Ps 24:7 LXX]
1:2535
'Remember me'—it is an idiom of Scripture, used in the sense of 'know me.'
1:2536
'For the sake of thy goodness, O Lord.' [Ps 24:7 LXX]
1:2537
Remember me not for the sake of my virtue.
1:2538
'Good and upright is the Lord.' [Ps 24:8 LXX]
1:2539
那與正直相伴而為良善的,才是真正的良善;
He who is good together with uprightness is truly good;
1:2540
因為「良善」(chrēstos)這詞往往被用作貶義;
for often the word 'good' (chrēstos) is taken in a derogatory sense;
1:2541
'Evil companionships corrupt good morals.' [1 Cor 15:33]
1:2542
Here it does not take 'good things' in a commendable sense, but in the sense of superficial things.
1:2543
同樣,「純真」(akakos)這詞也是如此;
And again likewise the word 'innocent' (akakos);
1:2544
'The innocent believeth every word' [Prov 14:15]—in the sense of the simple-minded.
1:2545
保羅也論到那些持異端之見的人,寫道;
And concerning those of false opinion Paul also writes;
1:2546
'By smooth speech and fair words they deceive the hearts of the innocent.' [Rom 16:18]
1:2547
'For this cause he will give the law to those who sin in the way.' [Ps 24:8 LXX]
1:2548
If he were harsh, if he were not good, he would not lay down the law for sinners in the way of salvation, but would deliver them over to punishment.
1:2549
He therefore lays down the law even for those very sinners in the way, in order that, having travelled this way, they may obtain salvation.
1:2550
He does not say those who have sinned, but those who are sinning.
1:2551
And those who are still sinning he leads into the way by exhortations, admonitions, and enactments of law.
1:2552
Does he mean the written law? This saying can be understood according to all the significations of 'law.'
1:2553
'He will guide the meek in judgement.' [Ps 24:9 LXX]
1:2554
祂帶著明辨引導謙卑的人;
He guides the meek with discernment;
1:2555
for again meekness too seems to many to signify superficiality.
1:2556
但當他們帶著明辨受引導時,他們就擁有那完全的美德,就是救主所教導人要擁有的,祂說;
But when they are guided with discernment, they possess the perfect virtue which the Saviour taught men to have, saying;
1:2557
'Learn from me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.' [Mt 11:29]
1:2558
「按公義」這句話也可以這樣理解;
The phrase 'in judgement' can also be taken thus;
1:2559
having judged these meek ones to be capable of being benefited, he guides them.
1:2560
And indeed the first sense fits most harmoniously with the wording, namely that they come to the way with discernment, having God as their guide.
1:2561
'Learn from me, for I am meek.' [Mt 11:29] 'All the ways of the Lord are mercy and truth.' [Ps 24:10 LXX]
1:2562
Mercy is yoked together with truth.
1:2563
Truth is something great—so to speak, it is beyond human beings.
1:2564
Consider that all rational beings, both the transcendent ones and those that remain above, have need of truth.
1:2565
But here we have need of mercy, in order that we may be able to know the truth.
1:2566
在前面已經說過;
And it has been said in what precedes;
1:2567
'Thy ways, O Lord, and thy paths guide thou me unto thy truth.' [cf. Ps 24:4-5 LXX]
1:2568
The beginning, then, of travelling these blessed ways comes from the mercy of God, but the end comes from truth.
1:2569
'To those who seek out his covenant and his testimonies.' [Ps 24:10 LXX]
1:2570
Not to those who simply seek, but earnestly to those who seek out.
1:2571
Those who search the Scriptures, they too seek out the covenant of God.
1:2572
For to search and to seek out are one and the same.
1:2573
His testimonies are the oracles which have been attested by him.
1:2574
You know that what has been attested is incontrovertible.
1:2575
The incontrovertibility, then, of the divine teachings is often signified by the name of 'testimonies.'
1:2576
'Which he himself has attested'—that is, which he himself has confirmed.
1:2577
It is also possible that things unexaminable and admitting of no refutation are called testimonies, not because they have been attested by anyone, but because their nature is such as to bear witness to the truth.
1:2578
'And the witness,' it says, 'in heaven is faithful.' [Ps 88:38 LXX]
1:2579
Concerning God, if it is said that God is witnessed to, we do not mean this—that the one who bears witness to him establishes him.
1:2580
John came in order that he might bear witness concerning the Light; [cf. Jn 1:7]
1:2581
for surely John, who bore witness concerning the Light, did not confer belief and establishment upon the Light.
1:2582
He who bears witness to knowledge shows himself to be knowledgeable, and he who bears witness to virtue is shown to be earnest.
1:2583
So then, those who in the persecutions were well-pleasing and contended as they ought are called witnesses (martyrs).
1:2584
They showed themselves to be lovers of truth; they showed themselves to be those who know the truth.
1:2585
They did not establish the truth, but they established themselves.
1:2586
Things worthy of one who bears witness, then, are often called testimonies.
1:2587
'For the sake of thy name, O Lord.' [Ps 24:11 LXX]
1:2588
Not for the sake of our own diligence or our own manner of life, but on account of thy name.
1:2589
這正是他們在另一篇詩中所說的;
This indeed they also say in another psalm;
1:2590
'Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory.' [Ps 113:9 LXX / Ps 115:1]
1:2591
因為我們既是稱為屬你的,你也被稱為我們的神,求你為你自己的名的緣故行事;
For since we bear your name and you have been called our God, act for the sake of your own name;
1:2592
and be merciful to my sin.
1:2593
The phrase 'it is great' we say in this way:
1:2594
If he so longs to have his own ways made known to himself, and to be guided into the truth, how does he have much sin? It was said earlier in the verse:
1:2595
'Cleanse me from my hidden faults'; for even a slight defilement is a great sin to one who is wholly cleansed.
1:2596
'Who is the man that fears the Lord?'
1:2597
Who then is the man that fears God? To this one he will give law in the way which God himself has chosen.
1:2598
The man who fears the Lord is not just anyone at all.
1:2599
So most of us suppose, so we often say, that:
1:2600
'I simply want to fear God.'
1:2601
For the fear of God surpasses all things, as Scripture itself declares:
1:2602
'There is no want to those who fear him.'
1:2603
If he who fears God has no lack, he is most fully complete.
1:2604
The phrase 'who is' can indicate what is rare and be a question.
1:2605
'He will give him law in the way which he chose.'
1:2606
但也可以指「人所揀選的道路」;
But it can mean 'in the way which the man chose';
1:2607
for virtue is properly called that which is worthy of choice.
1:2608
Just as that which is worthy of being loved is lovable, even if no one loves it—it is lovable; and that which is worthy of being hated is hateful, even if no one hates it; so too that which is worthy of choice is choiceworthy, even if no one chooses it.
1:2609
For it is possible to choose even evil things, but they are not choiceworthy.
1:2610
Rather, the choice concerning such things is mistaken.
1:2611
'He will give him law in the way which he chose.'
1:2612
Either the lawgiver himself, or the one to whom the law is given.
1:2613
'His soul shall dwell among good things.'
1:2614
This man who fears the Lord has his soul dwelling among good things.
1:2615
'And his seed shall inherit the earth.'
1:2616
Worthless sons of men were shown to be such; but the seed here is that which is begotten according to instruction and the imitation of virtue.
1:2617
'The Lord is a stronghold to those who fear him.'
1:2618
Next he speaks of the greatness of the one who fears God.
1:2619
Those who fear God have no other stronghold than the very one whom they fear.
1:2620
He is their strength, he is their king, he rules over them.
1:2621
And his name has become the peculiar possession of those who fear him.
1:2622
它並非所有人所獨有的,乃是敬畏他之人所獨有的;
It is not the peculiar possession of all men, but of those who fear him;
1:2623
for although he has given it to all, it has become the property of those who fear him.
1:2624
'And his covenant, to make it known to them.'
1:2625
When covenants are sealed, the things written in them are not yet manifest to the heirs.
1:2626
This covenant, then, does not always remain sealed, but will at some time be opened, so that the inheritance may be given to those enrolled in it.
1:2627
And since in many places he calls the divine word a covenant, both the old and the new, the one before the sojourning and the one after it, this covenant must be made known, it must be opened.
1:2628
It is opened at that time, when the things foretold are fulfilled by their outcome, according to the saying:
1:2629
因為它是在那時堅立的,就是當那立約的人已死的時候;
For it becomes firm at that time, when he who ordained it has died;
1:2630
即使因無爭議而未被廢除,它實際上也已生效了;
and even if it is not dissolved because there is no dispute, it has been dissolved in effect;
1:2631
for at that time the things ordained are rendered, and to those who have received them the covenant has been fulfilled.
1:2632
'My eyes are ever toward the Lord, for he shall pluck my feet out of the snare.'
1:2633
Observe that, unless we attend carefully to the words, at times contradictions are found.
1:2634
It no longer accords with the one who says:
1:2635
'My sin is great'—the verse:
1:2636
「我的眼目時常仰望耶和華」;
'My eyes are ever toward the Lord';
1:2637
for he who ever directs his eyes toward the Lord has no sin at all, but has a pure heart.
1:2638
Thus he is also able to see God himself.
1:2639
So when he does not at one moment see and at another not, but keeps his eyes ever toward the Lord, he says:
1:2640
'But I am continually with you.'
1:2641
And being with you, I do not sin.
1:2642
Unless one comes to be outside of God, he does not sin.
1:2643
Those, therefore, who remove themselves far from you shall perish.
1:2644
'And his covenant'—the covenant of God is made known whenever someone is shown worthy to receive the things promised.
1:2645
但神的約有一件超乎別的約、令人稱奇之處;
But the covenant of God has something paradoxical beyond the other covenants;
1:2646
the covenants of men are opened once and for all.
1:2647
This one, then, both makes the covenant known to those who draw near and who are worthy.
1:2648
正如神的事在其他一切方面都與眾不同——因為我曾說,這可見的光,當它進入其中時,照亮那有視力的人;
Just as in all other respects the things of God differ—for I was saying that this perceptible light, when it comes into the midst, illumines the one who has sight;
1:2649
it affords no perception to the blind.
1:2650
But the light of God, at the very moment it appears, both furnishes sight and illumines it.
1:2651
So then, to those who are ignorant of him and are blind, when he rises he graciously grants both things—both the possession of the mind's sight and the perception of the light. In the same way the covenant is not opened once and for all, but if anyone today renders himself worthy to be a son of the one who made the covenant and an heir, then it is made known to him.
1:2652
'My eyes are ever toward the Lord.'
1:2653
Since the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, it is necessary that the righteous also have their eyes ever toward him.
1:2654
他們並非時而看見他、時而不看見,反倒去看那些被禁止的事物之一;
They do not see him at one moment and at another not, but instead behold one of the forbidden things;
1:2655
for just as no one can serve two masters, so no one can have his eyes toward God and at the same time toward evil, or toward the maker of evil.
1:2656
God is an intelligible substance, beheld by the eyes of the mind.
1:2657
When the eyes of the mind are stretched toward him alone, they behold nothing else.
1:2658
The worse things they are not able by nature to see, when they behold God, just as one who serves God is by nature unable to serve mammon.
1:2659
The phrase 'is not able by nature' I mean in this way:
1:2660
行不義的人本性上不能行義;
it is not in the nature of the unjust man to do righteousness;
1:2661
For I do not speak in this way, as if to say that it is not in man's nature to fall; rather, insofar as he is righteous he is not inclined toward sin, and when he is a sinner he is not inclined toward virtue.
1:2662
Therefore continually toward the Lord.
1:2663
But he who beholds God does not sin.
1:2664
Everyone who sins has neither seen him nor known him.
1:2665
And behold indeed the reverent devotion of the saints.
1:2666
Even though he himself by his own free choice directed his eyes toward the Lord, and thereby was not sinning, yet ascribing to God the achievement of sinlessness he says:
1:2667
Since my eyes are continually toward him, therefore I am kept outside the snare which sin contrives.
1:2668
For he himself shall pluck my feet out of the snare.
1:2669
Certain of the ancients inquired — which is a good thing to state — that at times the eye of the inner man is named in the singular, and at other times in the plural.
1:2670
In the Song of Songs, at any rate, it is said:
1:2671
You have ravished our heart with one glance of your eyes.
1:2672
My eye has poured down tears.
1:2673
My eye was troubled because of wrath.
1:2674
I have lifted up my eyes to the mountains.
1:2675
My eyes are continually toward the Lord.
1:2676
The eyes of the heart being enlightened.
1:2677
For then there is knowledge of truth, when the mind receives into itself the form of each thing that is known.
1:2678
There are both visible and invisible works of God.
1:2679
And from the greatness and the beauty of these things the one who fashioned them is contemplated.
1:2680
The eye that beholds the invisible things is our mind, the pure heart, which also sees God.
1:2681
But we have also the sense-perception of the eyes.
1:2682
And if it applies itself to the visible works of God according as they were fashioned and according to the nature they possess, it is healthy.
1:2683
But when, for instance, seeing the sun we suppose it to be God, or seeing the heavenly arrangement we think that there is such a thing as casting horoscopes by nativity, then this eye does not see rightly.
1:2684
For the invisible things of God ought, since the creation of the world, to be clearly perceived, being understood by the things that are made.
1:2685
The invisible things of God are then seen, when we apply ourselves to God's visible creations, and thus from the creation of this perceptible world we clearly perceive the invisible things of God.
1:2686
The arts and sciences that are in the mind of men we are not able to see, inasmuch as the mind is invisible.
1:2687
But from the works produced or the scientific principles demonstrated, we gain the perception of the mind, according to what science or art it has been shaped.
1:2688
Properly speaking, then, contemplate the science of the engineer:
1:2689
He who is able to receive into his own understanding the rational principles of mechanical constructions.
1:2690
And likewise also with the others.
1:2691
We call that man a physician who knows the things of medicine as he ought, as the science prescribes.
1:2692
When, therefore, someone beholds the Invisible One as he ought — and by 'as he ought' I mean as far as is attainable — and beholds also the invisible creations of God, among which is the soul of man as well, he possesses this eye continually looking toward God and pure.
1:2693
When he rightly apprehends both the perceptible creations and the providence concerning them, and possesses also the perceptive longing — I do not mean that of the body, but the understanding of perceptible, visible things — rightly directed, then he likewise keeps his eyes continually toward the Lord.
1:2694
A servant is one who serves God, one who both in disposition and in deed confesses the Lordship, one who does the will of the Father who is in the heavens.
1:2695
For he himself shall pluck my feet out of the snare.
1:2696
Even though the snare-setters and hunters lie in wait for me, wishing to seize me and to entangle my foot as it were in the snare, yet I, having my eyes continually toward the Lord, do not suffer this.
1:2697
For in many places of the divine instructions the ambushes of the wicked are called snares.
1:2698
In this snare which they hid, their own foot was caught.
1:2699
Often the enemies of truth contrive snares, and in the snares which they contrive for others they themselves are taken.
1:2700
And there are also in the historical narrative certain things of this kind:
1:2701
Haman prepared a gallows in order to crucify the righteous Mordecai, and upon it he himself was hanged.
1:2702
And concerning that same haughty personage it is said:
1:2703
He dug a pit and hollowed it out, and he shall fall into the ditch which he made.
1:2704
Even if these things do not happen in this present life, yet at any rate in the age to come he is ensnared by the snare which he contrived.
