Those readings to which the obeli are affixed were not found either among the other translators or in the Hebrew, but only among the Seventy alone.
1:2
And those readings to which the asterisks are affixed were found in the Hebrew and among the other translators, but no longer among the Seventy.
1:3
But the readings that are at once both asterisked and obelized are found among the Seventy, and are also found in the Hebrew and among the other translators, but the other translators and the Hebrew differ from the Seventy only in position.
1:4
Hence they are marked with both the obelus and the asterisk together, as being found in all of them, but not in the same places.
1:5
The book, then, follows the position and order of the Seventy, but the order of the others has also been noted, as the readings stand among them.
1:6
凡此等變動只涉及少數經文之處,僅憑旁註的符號即可一目了然;
And where the rearrangement among them occurs in only a few readings, it is immediately evident from the signs placed alongside;
1:7
but where it occurs in more readings — which is also the last instance — it has the following order among the others:
1:8
After "But who shall know the punishments of both?" they join "But these things I say to you, the wise, that you may recognize them," continuing up to "And your want shall come like a good runner."
1:9
Then, "These are the instructions of Solomon," continuing up to "An abomination ("
1:10
abbreviated 'βδέλλ.') is the way that guides the lawless aright."
1:11
Then, "He who keeps the word shall be kept safe from being a son of destruction," continuing up to "And their poor from among men."
1:12
Then, "The leech had three daughters," continuing up to "But discern the poor and the weak."
1:13
We have set these things down so that, should such a copy be met with, the book may not seem to be at fault.
1:14
The others [read]: "But the punishments..."
1:15
Then, "These things I say," continuing up to "And your want."
1:16
Then, "These are the instructions," continuing up to "An abomination ("
1:17
Then, "He who keeps the word," continuing up to "And the poor."
1:18
Then, "The leech had three," continuing up to "But discern."
1:19
有些〔箴言註〕在此處前面標有數字,即那些前面標有單音節縮寫「Or.」(代表「俄利根」)的註文;
There are [scholia] which have a number set before them here — namely, those which have "Origen" inscribed by this single-syllable abbreviation, "Or.";
1:20
and they are found chiefly in the book of Job.
1:21
至於論及正文中某些經文或〔各版本〕異文之爭議的註文,其前皆標有一個向下傾斜的點狀符號,這些乃屬於曾校勘此書之人所加;
And the scholia that concern a disagreement of certain readings within the text, or of the editions, which have set before them a dotted mark inclined downward, belong to those who collated the book;
1:22
and the readings that lie doubtfully outside the text have set before them a dotted mark inclined outward; they were appended because of the scholia — inasmuch as the great teacher spoke with reference to them — so that the scholion might not seem to be directed at nothing, since in many of the manuscript copies the readings stand in this way, though in this copy they are not so placed, or are not found at all, and were for this reason appended.
1:23
A proverb is a discourse that, by means of sensible things, signifies intelligible things.
1:24
[β] "The Kingdom of Israel" is spiritual knowledge, comprising the principles concerning God, the incorporeal and the corporeal, judgment, and providence; or it is that which reveals the contemplation concerning the ethical, the natural, and the theological.
1:25
"He reigned in Israel, that he might know instruction and wisdom."
1:26
智慧乃是對有形者與無形者的知識,以及對其中所默觀之審判與眷佑的知識;
And wisdom is the knowledge of corporeal and incorporeal things, and of the judgment and providence contemplated within them;
1:27
whereas instruction is the moderation of the passions, contemplated with regard to the passible, or irrational, part of the soul.
1:28
[δ] "To direct judgment aright" signifies that the criterion is right and undistorted.
1:29
And there are three criteria in us: sense-perception, reason, and mind.
1:30
感覺是關於感官事物的;
Sense-perception is of sensible things;
1:31
理性是關於名詞、動詞與所言說之事的;
reason is of names and verbs and of the things said;
1:32
〔α〕正如心智藉著感官而觸及感官事物,照樣,心智也藉著德行而觀照靈智事物;
[α] Just as the mind, through the senses, apprehends sensible things, so also, through the virtues, it beholds intelligible things;
1:33
wherefore the wise Solomon also teaches us that they hold the function of sense-perception.
1:34
〔β〕「那些獲取惡的人必輕視智慧與教訓」;
[β] "Those who acquire vice will despise wisdom and instruction";
1:35
but in word, as I suppose, no one despises wisdom and instruction.
1:36
[γ] Just as, here, the crown of the head and the neck signify the mind, so also, here, the garland and the collar signify knowledge.
1:37
For this is the custom of the Holy Spirit: to call God and his angels, and the mind and virtue and knowledge, and vice and ignorance, and the devil himself and his angels, by many names.
1:38
然而祂並非隨意訂立這些名稱,如某些人所以為的那樣;
But he does not set down the names arbitrarily, as some suppose;
1:39
for they are marks of different operations — of God working within us through the angels, and of us working in him; and of the demons working toward us, and of us toward them.
1:40
〔δ〕「義人所擁有的是智慧、悟性與明智」;
[δ] "The possession of the righteous man is wisdom, understanding, and prudence";
1:41
for it says, "Acquire wisdom, and acquire understanding," and, "He who acquires prudence loves himself."
1:42
But the impious seize hold of this possession, persuading the righteous man to do something of the things forbidden by God, so that the mind, being blinded by sin, may fall away from these holy possessions.
1:43
[ε] The demons despoil those whom they conquer, taking from them the panoply of God — the helmet, and the breastplate, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
1:44
These are joint-heirs with the adversaries, they who partake of the same vice as they do.
1:45
And that is common which does not belong to the one God.
1:46
The net is the eternal punishment brought by the righteous judge upon impure souls, for the destruction of the wings that have wickedly grown forth from them.
1:47
此處祂稱「出離」為那已從惡與無知中出來的靈魂;
He now calls "exodus" the soul that has come forth from vice and ignorance;
1:48
and such also is the exodus of the sons of Israel, which came to pass after the generation that arose from the judgment of God and his teaching.
1:49
祂又稱這同一個靈魂為「寬廣的」;
And he calls this same soul also "broad";
1:50
因為經上說:「張開你的口,我就使它充滿」;
for it says, "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it";
1:51
and, "Be enlarged, you also" — Paul, in the letter to the Corinthians.
1:52
藉著如此出離的靈魂,智慧受到讚頌;
And by the soul that thus goes forth, wisdom is hymned;
1:53
but in the soul that is enlarged through the virtues, it speaks with boldness.
1:54
祂稱「其城牆的頂端」為極致的無動於情;
And "the top of its wall" he calls the utmost freedom from passion;
1:55
since indeed those who love the law surround themselves with a wall —
1:56
concerning which wall David also prays, saying:
1:57
"Let the walls of Jerusalem be built" — that is, the walls of such a soul that have fallen down, evidently because of the matter of Uriah.
1:58
祂稱「有權柄者的城門」為智者的德行;
And he calls "the gates of the mighty" the virtues of the wise;
1:59
因為經上說:「給我打開公義的門」;
for it says, "Open to me the gates of righteousness";
1:60
and, "The mighty are prone to wrath; let them not drink wine, lest, having drunk, they forget wisdom and be unable to judge the weak rightly."
1:61
How then does Solomon say earlier:
1:62
「向著滅亡的人歡喜的,必不能免罪」?或許智慧正是如此歡喜——正如它曾因稅吏馬太的〔舊我之〕滅亡而歡喜,也因那信了基督之強盜的〔舊我之〕滅亡而歡喜;
"He who rejoices over one perishing shall not be held guiltless"? Or perhaps wisdom rejoices in this way, just as it rejoiced over the ruin of Matthew the tax-collector, and over the ruin of the robber who believed in Christ;
1:63
for wisdom destroyed the robber in the one case, and the tax-collector in the other.
1:64
The siege is ethical teaching, which overturns the soul that has been badly built.
1:65
If it is in our power both to wish to attend to the counsels of wisdom and to wish not to attend, then we have come to be self-determining.
1:66
與此相似的還有:「你們若肯聽從我,必得吃地上的美物」;
Similar to this is also: "If you are willing and obey me, you shall eat the good things of the land";
1:67
「你們若不肯,也不聽從,必被刀劍吞滅」;
"but if you are not willing, nor obey me, the sword shall devour you";
1:68
for the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things.
1:69
Just as infants stand between the righteous and the unrighteous, so also all men stand between angels and demons, being neither demons nor accounted as angels, until the consummation of the age.
1:70
He who is free from passion rests in quiet, without fear, from every evil thought.
1:71
This is the one who hides the commandment of God: he who does it — since indeed the demons too are said to snatch it away, by not permitting us to do it.
1:72
此處他稱「聲音」為靈魂之無動於情;
Here he calls "the voice" the soul's freedom from passion;
1:73
for it is its nature to invoke the knowledge of God,
1:74
"With my voice I cried out to the Lord," and again:
1:75
"Attend to the voice of my supplication."
1:76
然而智慧與悟性必須先存在,為要能夠明白對主的敬畏;
But wisdom and understanding must exist beforehand, so that one may be able to understand the fear of the Lord;
1:77
and we shall indeed adduce these things against those who despise wisdom and understanding, yet wish to take refuge in the fear of God as though it were an easy matter.
1:78
He calls "axles" the commandments of God that lead us to the knowledge of God.
1:79
"Therefore I set myself right by all your commandments."
1:80
聖天使所說的一切都是可信的;
The holy angels speak all things that are trustworthy;
1:81
但人所說的,有些可信,有些不可信;
but men speak some things trustworthy and some untrustworthy;
1:82
but the devil speaks nothing trustworthy — the phrase standing for "not worthy of belief."
1:83
for here he calls the devil "a man," since indeed "an evil man sowed the tares."
1:84
If counsel is a certain movement of the mind, how could it have abandoned the teaching of youth? And how did it also forget the divine covenant? For he speaks to us of the evil counsel as though of a rational living being.
1:85
或者,此處他稱魔鬼為「惡的意念」;
Or else he here calls the devil "evil counsel";
1:86
for he counseled evilly, saying, "I will set my throne above the stars; I will be like the Most High."
1:87
他也忘記了神聖的知識,離棄了他青年時期的教導;
and he also forgot the divine knowledge, having abandoned the teaching of his youth;
1:88
which "youth" signifies his former condition, in which he was also an object of envy among the trees of paradise.
1:89
"For he loves those who pursue righteousness," and, "So run that you may obtain it."
1:90
凡被生命之年歲所及的人,這些人便得著正直的路徑;
As many as are overtaken by the years of life, these lay hold of straight paths;
1:91
"And your mercy," it says, "shall pursue me all the days of my life."
1:92
經上說:「那些持守無邪而存留的人,被留在地上」——就是說,留在知識之中;
"Those," it says, "who remained in innocence were left in the land" — that is, in knowledge;
1:93
但那些因惡而墮落的人,將藉著良善再度歸回。忘記律法的人,就是不按律法生活的人;
but those who fell through vice shall, through goodness, return again. This is the one who forgets the law: he who does not live according to it;
1:94
記念律法的人,就是照著律法生活的人;
this is the one who remembers the law: he who lives according to it;
1:95
既然遵守神話語的人,就是實行這些話語的人;那麼毀棄這些話語的人,就是不願實行這些話語的人;
and if it is he who keeps the words of God who does them, then it is he who destroys them who is unwilling to practice them;
1:96
for it is not the hearers of the law, it says, who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
1:97
經上說:「你既得了神的智慧,就不可自高」;
"Do not be puffed up," it says, "having acquired the wisdom of God";
1:98
and that he here means both the wisdom of God and this same wisdom as human, he shows by what he adds next:
1:99
"For in all your ways," it says, "acknowledge her, that she may make straight your paths."
1:100
當靈魂的諸能力得著應有的照料時,那時它們便要說:「主啊,誰能像你?」因為經上說:「我的一切骨頭都要說:主啊,主啊,誰能像你?」因為靈魂的記憶能力一旦得著照料,必要說:「我記念神,就喜樂」;
When the faculties of the soul receive due care, then they will say, "Lord, who is like you?" For it says, "All my bones shall say, Lord, Lord, who is like you?" For the memorial faculty of the soul, having received care, will certainly say, "I remembered God and rejoiced";
1:101
同樣地,視覺能力也要說:「我思想你的作為,就驚奇」;
and likewise the visual faculty will say, "I considered your works and was amazed";
1:102
同樣地,欲望能力也要說:「主啊,我一切的願望都在你面前」;
and likewise the desiring faculty will say, "Lord, before you is all my desire";
1:103
and the reasoning faculty will also say, "I considered the days of old."
1:104
and the same will hold in every respect for the other faculties as well.
1:105
在某些抄本中載有「五穀的豐足」一語;
In some manuscripts the phrase "abundance of grain" is found;
1:106
but "of grain" stands neither in the Hebrew nor in the text of the Seventy.
1:107
唯獨對智慧,魔鬼是無能為力的,因為牠們不被容許將惡念投入那已受智慧薰陶之人的心中;
Against wisdom alone the demons are powerless, being denied permission to cast thoughts into the heart of the one made wise;
1:108
for the mind, occupied with the contemplations of wisdom, becomes incapable of receiving an unclean thought.
1:109
純潔的心智親近智慧;
A pure mind draws near to wisdom;
1:110
但不潔的心智將被遠遠隔離。亞當在犯罪之後,被禁止分享這棵樹,因為生命樹確實是從公義的果實中生長出來的;
but the impure mind will be removed far from it. From this tree, after the transgression, Adam is prevented from partaking, since indeed the tree of life grows from the fruits of righteousness;
1:111
而若生命樹即是神的智慧,那麼他被禁止觸摸這棵樹,是理所當然的;
and if the tree of life is the wisdom of God, he is justly prevented from touching this tree;
1:112
"for into a soul that devises evil," it says, "wisdom will not enter."
1:113
"God by wisdom founded the earth, and by understanding prepared the heavens;"
1:114
"and by his perception the depths were broken open, and the clouds poured out dew."
1:115
他在此稱之為「大地」的,聖保羅則稱之為「闊」;
This which he here called "earth," holy Paul named "breadth";
1:116
and what are here called "heavens" he calls, in the letter to the Ephesians, "height"; and the "depths" spoken of figuratively he names "depth"; and the dew-laden clouds he calls "length."
1:117
and all these are symbols of rational natures, distributed among worlds and bodies according to proportion.
1:118
he called her the one who bore the yoke of the Lord.
1:119
A stumbling-block for a rational nature is an unclean thought or false knowledge.
1:120
由此我們知道,憐憫能除去夜間臨到我們的可怖幻象;
From this we know that mercy removes the fearful apparitions that befall us at night;
1:121
溫柔、不動怒與恆忍也起同樣的作用,凡是本性上能平息躁動之怒氣的事物亦然;
and gentleness, freedom from anger, and patience do the same, as do all things naturally apt to calm a disturbed temper;
1:122
since the fearful apparitions are indeed wont to arise from the disturbance of anger.
1:123
This enmity toward one's neighbor produces some evil.
1:124
Ignorance of the Lord is in the souls of the impious, but knowledge of God is in the soul of the righteous.
1:125
Just as the Lord opposes the unjust as righteousness, and liars as truth, so too he opposes the proud as humility.
1:126
智慧人必承受知識;
The wise will inherit knowledge;
1:127
but the impious have honored ignorance.
1:128
此處應當注意,他稱律法為「美好的禮物」,這是相對於那不義地在懷中收受賄賂、卻不得亨通的人而言;
It should be noted here that he calls the law "a good gift," on account of him who unjustly receives gifts in his bosom and does not prosper;
1:129
for there he calls "unjust gifts" the commands of the evil one, which, if the mind receives them, it does not prosper in its ways.
1:130
This is the one who forsakes the law: he who transgresses it.
1:131
倘若用柵欄圍護智慧是在我們能力之內的事,而德行亦在我們能力之內;
If it is within our power to fence wisdom about, and the virtues are within our power;
1:132
then the palisades here signify the virtues, which exalt the knowledge of God.
1:133
"A crown of graces and a crown of delight" is the knowledge of God, which also shields us, repelling every thought tainted by passion and all false knowledge.
1:134
These many ways lead to one way — the one that said:
1:135
and by "many ways" he has meant the virtues that lead to the knowledge of Christ.
1:136
The place of this army is vice and falsely named knowledge.
1:137
If the Lord gives sleep to his beloved, and the impious are not his beloved, then the Lord does not give sleep to the impious.
1:138
and from this it is also possible to show plausibly that demons are not even capable of sleep by nature.
1:139
由此我們知道那敵對勢力的軍隊是靠什麼滋養的;
From this we know by what the army of the opposing power is nourished;
1:140
"for its food," it says, "is impiety, and its wine is lawlessness."
1:141
The virtues go before us and give us light, until the sun of righteousness shines his own day upon us.
1:142
不虔敬的人既不明白自己犯罪的方式,也不知道使他們跌倒的緣由;
Nor do the impious understand the manner in which they sin, nor do they know the cause of why they stumble;
1:143
but they do not even know this—that they transgress the law—which is the mark of the utmost folly.
1:144
He calls the virtues "springs," from which they beget the living water, which is the knowledge of Christ.
1:145
And David says, "The springs of the waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were uncovered"—clearly referring to the coming of our Savior Christ.
1:146
Those who have thoughts unmoved by passion, and true doctrines, these see rightly.
1:147
因此他們也說,勇敢介於魯莽與怯懦之間;
Therefore they also say that courage lies between rashness and cowardice;
1:148
but now he calls "right" not the things that are right by nature, but the things that appear right to some because of pleasures.
1:149
因為他說北風是猛烈之風,卻被冠以「靈巧」(右手之風)之名;
for he says the north wind is a harsh wind, yet it is called by the name "dexterous" [right-handed];
1:150
calling the north wind symbolically the evil one, from whom all the evils on earth were kindled.
1:151
In agreement with these is the verse, "Unless the Lord build the house and guard the city," and so on.
1:152
「脂肪」象徵享樂,不潔即由此而生;
"Fat" signifies pleasure, from which impurity is born;
1:153
whose offspring are vice and ignorance, than which nothing more bitter can be found among created things.
1:154
The one whom above he called "harlot," now he has named "folly."
1:155
David prays on behalf of those who descend into Hades after death, saying:
1:156
"Let them go down alive into Hades."
1:157
If the paths are not easily known, it is well said, "They do not know how they stumble."
1:158
此處他所說的「道路」,是指邁向德行而行的心智;
Here he called "the way" the mind that journeys toward virtue;
1:159
or perhaps he commands virtue to separate us from vice.
1:160
由此我們得知,忿怒的部分在魔鬼身上佔主導;
Here we know that the irascible part prevails in the demons;
1:161
"for wrath is merciless," he says, "and anger is sharp."
1:162
惡人藉著種種惡行磨損基督的肉身,並吞噬他的血,視之為平常之物;
Through their vices the wicked wear away the flesh of Christ, and consume his blood, considering it a common thing;
1:163
"He who drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."
1:164
曾有一時惡尚不存在,也將有一時惡不再存在;
There was a time when vice was not, and there will be a time when it will not be;
1:165
但從無一時德行不存在,也永無一時德行將不存在;
but there was no time when virtue was not, nor will there be a time when it will not be;
1:166
for the seeds of virtue are ineradicable.
1:167
這人也使我信服──他幾乎陷入卻未完全陷入一切惡中:那位因惡行而下到陰間,卻仍憐憫自己弟兄的財主;
And this man too persuades me—one who fell short by a little, and did not become wholly given to every evil: the rich man who came to be in Hades because of vice, yet had pity for his brothers;
1:168
and to show mercy happens to be the finest seed of virtue.
1:169
知識既是井,也是泉源;
Knowledge is both a well and a spring;
1:170
因為對那些剛開始邁向德行的人,它似乎是一口深井;但對那些已達無動於情、心地純潔的人,則是泉源;
for to those who have just come to virtue it seems to be a deep well, but to those who are free from passion and pure, a spring;
1:171
因此救主也坐在泉源旁;那時約是第六時辰;
thus also the Savior sat by the spring; it was about the sixth hour;
1:172
而那撒瑪利亞婦人卻稱它為井;
but the Samaritan woman calls it a well;
1:173
"Sir," she says, "you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep."
1:174
此處的「婦人」象徵對神的知識;
The woman here signifies the knowledge of God;
1:175
這知識是我們自幼年便被賜予的,所羅門在上文稱之為「幼年的教導」;
and this was given to us from youth, which above Solomon calls "the teaching of youth";
1:176
"Son," he says, "let not evil counsel overtake you"—speaking of the devil as one who counsels wickedly, she who abandoned the teaching of youth and forgot the divine covenant.
1:177
然而遺忘與捨棄,乃是繼知識與擁有之後才發生的次要之事;
But forgetfulness and abandonment come second, after knowledge and possession;
1:178
just as disease is the last stage of health, and death is second to life.
1:179
同時也應知道,同一知識既被稱為母親,也被稱為妻子與姊妹;
At the same time this too must be known, that the very same knowledge is called both mother and wife and sister;
1:180
稱為「母親」,是因那教導我的人藉著她生了我,如同保羅藉福音生了加拉太人一般;
"Mother," since the one who taught me begot me through her, as Paul begot the Galatians through the gospel;
1:181
稱為「妻子」,是因她與我同在時,生出諸德行與正確的教義,正如智慧為丈夫生出明智一般;
"Wife," because, being with me, she bears virtues and right doctrines, if indeed wisdom bears prudence for a man;
1:182
稱為「姊妹」,是因我與她皆出自同一位神與父;
"Sister," because both I and she have come to be from the one God and Father;
1:183
"For say," he says, "that wisdom is your sister."
1:184
If grace and friendship set free, and virtue and knowledge set free the rational soul, then grace and friendship are virtue and knowledge.
1:185
但若母鹿生於友愛,馬駒生於恩典,那麼母鹿即是默觀的象徵,馬駒則是無動於情的象徵;
but if the hind is born of friendship, and the foal is born of grace, then the hind is a symbol of contemplation, and the foal a symbol of freedom from passion;
1:186
for the one [freedom from passion] naturally comes to be from the virtues, and the other [contemplation] from knowledge.
1:187
Virtue and the knowledge of God are proper to the rational nature.
1:188
所謂「數量眾多」,即是擁有大量的默觀洞見;
To be "the many-numbered" is to have a multitude of contemplative insights;
1:189
and "multitude" is also said of those who are benefited.
1:190
「不可多與外邦女子親近」──有人會以為這是指外邦的智慧而言,不必久留其中,因其中暗藏著欺詐;
"Do not be much given to the strange woman"—some will suppose this is said concerning external wisdom, with which it is not necessary to linger long, because of the deceits hidden within it;
1:191
另有人則將之理解為關於惡的教導,並如此解釋「不可多與之親近」:身為人不可能完全不生惡念,但卻能不在其中久留;
but others will understand it concerning vice, and will interpret "not to be much given to it" thus: that it is not possible for a man to abstain altogether from evil thoughts, yet it is possible not to linger in them;
1:192
and that he calls the evil thoughts "the strange embraces"—those that hold the soul fast, and do not escape the notice of God who knows the heart.
1:193
凡是為基督(使徒的朋友)作保、如同為公義與真理作保的人,就將自己的靈魂交付給那些素來因人與救主的友誼而向人爭戰的仇敵;
Everyone who becomes surety for Christ, the friend of the apostles, as for righteousness and truth, hands over his own soul to the enemies who are accustomed to make war on men because of their friendship toward the Savior;
1:194
因為屬靈的友誼即是對神的知識,聖徒正是依此而被稱為神的朋友;
for spiritual friendship is the knowledge of God, according to which the saints too are called friends of God;
1:195
因此施洗約翰是新郎的朋友,摩西與眾使徒也是如此;
thus also John the Baptist was a friend of the bridegroom, as were Moses and the apostles;
1:196
"For no longer do I call you servants," he says.
1:197
Wherefore, he says, one must accordingly, through prayers and supplications, [come to the aid of] also the friend for whom you became surety, saying:
1:198
"Guard me, O Lord, from the hand of the sinner, and deliver me from the unjust man, and because of my enemies do not hand me over into the hands of those who afflict me;"
1:199
"for because of you we are put to death all the day long, we are reckoned as sheep for slaughter."
1:200
靈魂的「睡眠」,即是付諸行動的罪;
The sleep of the soul is sin in act;
1:201
而「打盹」則是靈魂中最初形成的不潔念頭;
but "drowsiness" is the first unclean notion that forms in the soul;
1:202
therefore the text calls it "sleep" before it mentions "drowsiness."
1:203
"For it was said," he says, "to the ancients:"
1:204
"You shall not murder"; but I say to you, "You shall not be angry."
1:205
因為在此,於我看來律法所禁止的正是「睡眠」;
for here too it seems to me that the law forbids "sleep";
1:206
而基督的福音所禁止的則是「打盹」;
while the gospel of Christ forbids "drowsiness";
1:207
if indeed the one cuts off sin in act, while the other cuts off the vice first forming in the mind.
1:208
此處應當留意,他稱螞蟻天生協調有序的行動為「智慧」;
It must be noted here that he calls the ant's natural, harmonious movement "wisdom";
1:209
for indeed one wiser than the wise is called wiser still.
1:210
are all things slaves of God? Or is God perhaps called "Master" in two ways: as Creator, and as one who is known? Therefore Paul also writes:
1:211
But now, having been freed from sin and enslaved to God (that is, according to virtue and knowledge), you have your fruit unto sanctification, and the end, eternal life.
1:212
But if the ant, being irrational, has no share in such an end, it is clear that it is also free from such servitude.
1:213
所以,按照這種主權而言,說螞蟻「不受主人管轄」是恰當的;
Rightly, then, is it said that the ant is not under a master, with respect to this kind of mastery;
1:214
and again, that it is under a master, inasmuch as it has God as its creator.
1:215
By the ant, Solomon seems to sketch out for us the practical way, but by the bee to signify the contemplation of the things that have come to be, and of him who made them — a contemplation which the pure and the impure, the wise and the foolish, alike bring to bear for the health of the soul.
1:216
And it seems to me that the wax holds the place of the things themselves, while the honey stored within it is a symbol of the contemplation of them.
1:217
蜂蠟終將過去;
And the wax will pass away;
1:218
因為經上說:天地要廢去;
for, it says, heaven and earth will pass away;
1:219
但蜂蜜卻不會廢去;
but the honey will not pass away;
1:220
for neither will the words of our Savior Christ pass away.
1:221
美好的言語如蜂房之蜜,其甘甜乃是靈魂的醫治;
Honeycombs of honey are good words, and their sweetness is the healing of the soul;
1:222
How sweet, it says, are your words to my throat, above honey to my mouth.
1:223
He named the outcome of toil "toils."
1:224
這種睡眠按其本性只會臨到有理性的靈魂;
This sleep is by nature such as to befall the rational soul alone;
1:225
因為在此它意指惡與無知;
for here it signifies vice and ignorance;
1:226
貧窮就是知識的匱乏;
Poverty is the privation of knowledge;
1:227
and want is the scarcity of the virtues.
1:228
此處須留意:恐怕那些敵對者藉着身體這樣的動作,就知道自己的惡念正在我們裡面被滋養;
One must attend here, lest perhaps through such movements of the body the adversaries come to know that their own thoughts are being nourished within us;
1:229
since we have believed that God alone is the knower of hearts.
1:230
凡吃基督的肉、喝祂血的人,就得着義的血;理性的靈魂若被剝奪這血,據說便會死亡;
Everyone who eats the flesh of Christ and drinks his blood acquires righteous blood, and the rational soul, deprived of this, is said to die;
1:231
For, it says, the soul that sins, it shall die.
1:232
但若有義的血,顯然也就有不義的血;
But if there is righteous blood, then clearly there is also unrighteous blood;
1:233
which is what those gather in themselves who devour him who was given as food to the peoples of the Ethiopians, and who are nourished by the bread of falsehood.
1:234
And those who sacrifice to strange gods consume their own righteous blood, while those who offer themselves as a sacrifice to the one God destroy the unrighteous blood.
1:235
And it will altogether follow that the generation of righteous blood accompanies the destruction of unrighteous blood, and the generation of unrighteous blood accompanies the destruction of righteous blood.
1:236
然而這是如今按其本性所發生的;從起初卻並非如此;
But this is what naturally happens now; from the beginning it was not so;
1:237
for righteousness did not come into being through the destruction of vice, just as health did not come through the destruction of disease, since children are born with health from the beginning.
1:238
Brothers are those who have the gift of adoption and are under the same father, Christ; whom the witness of unrighteousness attempts to divide, casting disturbances and quarrels among them.
1:239
"He kindles," as I think, is added on account of the passionate thoughts, which inflame the irascible part toward anger and hatred, and the desiring part toward shameful deeds.
1:240
These thoughts the holy Paul also called "the fiery darts of the evil one," which wound the soul and work death.
1:241
He commands us to bring in the mother, who is wisdom, begetting us according to God.
1:242
然而他本應提及父親才是;
And yet he ought to have named the father;
1:243
for he is rather more fit for being together with the son.
1:244
但由於在對受造之物的默觀之前,不可能認識神,因此之故,他吩咐要引入母親而非父親,好叫兒子藉着母親得見父親;
But since it is not possible to know God before the contemplation of the things that have come to be, for this reason he commands us to bring in the mother and not the father, so that through the mother the son may see the father;
1:245
for if she does not beget him, he does not see the light, which is the knowledge of God himself.
1:246
律法的誡命是燈、是光;也許這燈就是舊約;
That the commandment of the law is a lamp and light, and perhaps the lamp is the old covenant;
1:247
因為他就是那燃燒發光的燈;
for he was the lamp that burned and gave light;
1:248
For, it says, I am the light of the world.
1:249
For the pleasure of vice is as great as that of a single loaf of bread.
1:250
He binds fire in his bosom who allows the impure thought, lingering in the heart, to corrupt the right thoughts.
1:251
And this one walks on coals, who destroys his own soul through sin committed in deed.
1:252
他稱惡為「有夫之婦」;
He calls vice "a married woman";
1:253
for her husband is the devil, who begets with her the lawless sons.
1:254
And the Savior too, in the Gospels, says to the Jews: "You are of your father the devil."
1:255
But if he is caught by true knowledge, he who formerly, through lack of knowledge, was stealing from the wisdom that was made foolish by our Savior, will put away all false knowledge.
1:256
Everyone who has communion with vice is an adulterer against the devil, who first married vice and became a murderer from the beginning.
1:257
此處他表明:在審判之日,我們所行的事將有魔鬼作為控告者;
Here he shows that we shall have the devil as accuser of the things done by us on the day of judgment;
1:258
and this the holy Paul also says:
1:259
That the adversary may be ashamed, having nothing base to say concerning us.
1:260
If through transgression of the law one dishonors God, then clearly through doing the law one honors God.
1:261
智慧是我們的姊妹,因為那造了無形本性的父,也造了她;
Wisdom is our sister, because the Father, who made the incorporeal nature, made her also;
1:262
而此處所謂「智慧」,並非指神的兒子,而是指對有形與無形之物、以及其中之審判與眷佑的默觀;
but here he means by "wisdom" not the Son of God, but the contemplation of bodies and incorporeal things, and of the judgment and providence at work in them;
1:263
of which prudence and knowledge, and instruction and understanding, are also species.
1:264
The words cast in to please are the passionate thoughts.
1:265
他此處稱人的肉體為「窗戶」;
He here calls the flesh of man "a window";
1:266
for through this the evil one works deceptions upon men, upon those who wish to walk the broad and spacious way that leads to destruction.
1:267
但此處須留意所羅門論及惡時所說的:起初它並不將人引向惡本身,也不強迫人行走在它房屋的巷道中,或靠近牆角,或在夜晚的黑暗中說話;
But here one must attend to what Solomon says about vice: that at the beginning it does not lead the man away to vice itself, nor does it compel him to walk in the passageways of its houses, or to draw near a corner, or to speak in the darkness of evening;
1:268
but if it sees someone giving himself over to pleasures, immediately it meets him, having the appearance of a harlot, which causes the hearts of the young to be deceived.
1:269
He called the impure condition of the soul "nocturnal and murky quiet," in which, being inflamed, it works out sin through the body.
1:270
那些在大街上遊蕩的人,會生出姦淫、淫亂與偷竊的惡念;
Those who wander about in the broad streets receive thoughts of adultery, fornication, and theft;
1:271
but those who wander outside these are moved contrary to nature, seeking intercourse with males, and receiving fantasies of certain other forbidden things.
1:272
若說在諸念頭(logismoi)中,有些是潔淨的,有些是不潔淨的;
If, of thoughts, some are pure, and others impure;
1:273
又若說在諸線中,有些被稱為直線,有些則是折斷的直線;
and if, of lines, some are called straight, and others broken straight lines;
1:274
而角就是折斷的直線;
and an angle is a broken straight line;
1:275
then an intelligible angle is an impure thought.
1:276
所以惡在每個牆角埋伏這件事,表明它是藉着一切不潔的惡念來欺騙靈魂;
So the fact that vice lies in wait at every corner signifies that it deceives the soul through all the impure thoughts;
1:277
and a demonic kiss is a passionate notion, calling the soul forth to shameful activity.
1:278
Vice seeks to shame the face of our soul (
1:279
……),藉着繩索、床榻、絨毯、番紅花與肉桂;
), through the cords, and the bed, and the coverlets, and the saffron, and the cinnamon;
1:280
which signify various evils and passions, occurring among the inventors of evils.
1:281
'If after many days he shall return to his house': Paul, gazing very spiritually upon the dispensation, writes that the last enemy to be abolished is death.
1:282
Of herons there are three kinds: the kepphos (a gull-like bird), the white one, and the one called the 'starry' heron.
1:283
這幾種之中,海鷗交配時十分困難;
Of these, the kepphos mates and copulates only with difficulty;
1:284
for while mating it cries out and, as they say, sheds blood from its eyes, and it lays its eggs badly and with pain.
1:285
These things, then, we have set down from Aristotle's History of Animals.
