1:1
The First Invective Against the Emperor Julian
1:2
萬民哪,你們要聽這話;世上一切的居民哪,你們要側耳而聽;
Hear this, all you nations; give ear, all you who dwell in the world.
1:3
因為我要如同從一座極目遠眺、居於天下之中的高處,用宏大崇高的宣告,召喚萬眾;
For I summon all, as though from some far-seen and central watchtower, with a great and lofty proclamation;
1:4
萬民、萬族、萬方言哪,人類的一切種族,一切世代,凡現今存活的,和將要出生的,你們都當聽;
hear, O peoples, tribes, tongues, every race of men, and every age — both those who now are, and those who shall be;
1:5
為使我的宣告更加宏大,我要召喚諸天的一切大能,凡以推翻僭主為己任的眾天使——他們所要傾覆的,並非亞摩利王西宏,也非巴珊王噩,這些不過是苦害以色列(天下之一隅)的區區小王;
and that my proclamation may be the greater, I summon every power of the heavens, all the angels whose task is the overthrow of the tyrant — they shall cast down not Sihon, king of the Amorites, nor Og, king of Bashan, petty princelings who afflicted Israel, a small portion of the world;
1:6
but the dragon, the apostate, the great intellect, the Assyrian, the common enemy and foe of all — who raged much and made many threats upon the earth, and spoke and devised much iniquity against the height.
1:7
Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth;
1:8
for it is time for me to utter the same words as Isaiah, most sonorous of the prophets —
1:9
只是他呼喚作證,是針對背棄〔神〕的以色列;
except that he calls and testifies these words against Israel, who had rejected God;
1:10
but I, against a tyrant, who both rejected God and fell a fall worthy of his impiety.
1:11
偉大的君士坦提烏斯之靈啊,若死後尚有知覺,也請聽;在他之前一切愛基督的列王之靈啊,也都當聽;
Hear too, O soul of the great Constantius, if there be any perception after death, and hear, all you Christ-loving souls of the emperors before him;
1:12
而尤當屬他——因為他與基督的產業一同成長,使其日益強盛,又以歲月使之穩固,故此成為古往今來諸帝王中最負盛名者——(哦,何等的欺凌!)他竟犯下一個與自身敬虔極不相稱的重大疏失;
but him most of all — inasmuch as he grew up together with the inheritance of Christ, and increased it in strength, and confirmed it through time, so that for this he became the most renowned of all emperors that ever were — (O the outrage!) he made an error exceedingly unworthy of his own piety;
1:13
unknowingly he nurtured among the Christians the enemy of Christ, and in this one thing alone, of all things, did not show kindness rightly — both saving, and making emperor, the one who was ill-saved and ill-made-emperor.
1:14
and for this reason above all he would rejoice — just as at the overthrow of impiety, and at the affairs of the Christians returning to their ancient state, so also at this discourse of mine.
1:15
因為我要將一篇感恩的言語獻與神,這獻禮比任何無理性的祭物更為神聖、更為潔淨——絕非仿照那人可憎的言詞與荒誕,以及他那更為可憎的祭祀;那些祭祀的豐盛與威能,不過是不敬的力量,是一種——容我如此稱呼——愚拙的智慧;
For I shall dedicate to God a discourse of thanksgiving, more sacred and purer than any irrational sacrifice — not after the manner of that man's accursed words and follies, and his more accursed sacrifices, whose abundance and power were but the strength of impiety, and an unwise wisdom, if I may so call it;
1:16
因為這世代一切的權能與學問,都行在黑暗之中,遠遠偏離真理之光;
since indeed all the power and learning of this age walks in darkness, and falls far short of the light of truth;
1:17
such indeed is that wisdom, and among such men, bearing such fruits — withering swiftly like grass, falling away quickly like the green herb, and passing away together with its fathers who perish with a crash, whose downfall was more conspicuous than their impiety.
1:18
But as I offer today a sacrifice of praise, and kindle the bloodless honor of words, who shall array around me an audience equal to this grace? Or what tongue shall join in chorus so far as I desire? What ear shall be as eager as my discourse? For indeed the grace that comes through discourse belongs most properly not to the Logos alone, among the other titles by which he is named and in which he especially rejoices — both in this appellation, and in the power of the calling —
1:19
但也有一種恰如其分的公義,屬於那人——即當以言語來懲罰他對言語本身所犯下的罪過;
but a fitting justice belongs also to that man, to be punished by discourse for his transgression against discourse itself;
1:20
for though learning is common to all rational beings, he grudged it to the Christians as though it were his own private possession — thinking most irrationally about reason, he who supposed himself the most reasonable of all men.
1:21
首先,因為他惡意地按己意更改了這稱謂的意涵,彷彿「希臘之學」是屬於〔異教〕信仰,而非屬於〔希臘〕語言;
First, because he maliciously shifted the meaning of the term to suit his purpose, as though Greek learning belonged to pagan religion, and not to the Greek tongue;
1:22
並因此將我們逐出學問之外,彷彿我們是竊取他人財物的賊;
and for this reason he drove us away from learning, as though we were thieves of another's goods;
1:23
just as if he had also barred us from the arts — as many as have been discovered among the Greeks — and thought that these too belonged to him on account of the ambiguity of the name.
1:24
其次,因為他自以為我們不會察覺,他其實並未奪去我們任何真正的美善——我們原本就極其輕視這些學問;
Next, because he supposed it would escape our notice that he was not about to deprive us of any great good — we who indeed utterly despise these writings;
1:25
他其實是懼怕那駁斥其不敬的言論,彷彿那些言論的力量在於措辭之精巧,而非在於對真理的認識與〔我們的〕論證——只要我們尚有舌頭可以宣認神,這些駁斥便絕無可能被壓制;
but rather, fearing the refutations of his impiety, as though their strength lay in elegance of style, and not in the knowledge of truth and in our arguments — refutations which it is more impossible to restrain in us, so long as we have a tongue to confess God;
1:26
因為連同其他一切,我們也將此——即言語——分別為聖,正如我們也將身體分別為聖一般,每當這身體也必須為真理而爭戰之時;
since indeed, together with other things, we consecrate this too — namely, discourse — just as we consecrate our bodies, whenever these too must contend on behalf of the truth;
1:27
故此,那頒佈此令者,只能阻止我們說雅典式的希臘話,卻未能阻止我們說出真理;
so that he who ordained this prevented us from speaking Attic Greek, but did not stop us from speaking the truth;
1:28
and he exposed the unsoundness of his own cause, but did not escape refutation —
1:29
for, without realizing it, he thereby subjected himself all the more to these very refutations.
1:30
因為壓制我方的言論,並非一個對自身信仰的公義、或對自身論證有信心之人所當為;
For it was not the mark of one confident either in the justice of his religion, or in his own arguments, to restrain our discourse;
1:31
just as if someone should deem himself the mightiest of athletes, and claim to be proclaimed victor over all, having ordered that none of the noble contenders should compete, nor even step down into the stadium — or having maimed some of their limbs, which is proof of cowardice rather than of strength.
1:32
因為冠冕屬於那些搏鬥爭戰之人,而非屬於那些高坐觀看之人;
For crowns belong to those who contend, not to those seated above as spectators;
1:33
and to those who employ their full strength, not to those stripped of the greater part of their power.
1:34
But if you were altogether afraid to close ranks and come to grips with us, by that very fact you declared your own defeat, and it fell to me to be victorious without so much as having contended — since you contended not to contend.
1:35
以上便是我們這位「英明」的皇帝兼立法者的所作所為——彷彿是要讓他的暴政無一遺漏,並要在他統治伊始,便預先宣告其治下的悖理,於是首先便對言語本身施行了暴政;
Such then were the deeds of our 'wise' emperor and lawgiver — as if so that nothing of his tyranny might lack its share, and that he might herald beforehand the unreason of his reign at the very outset of his rule, by first of all playing the tyrant over discourse itself;
1:36
但於我們而言,既已重獲自由,理當為此,甚至為言語本身,向神獻上感恩的宣認;
but it is good for us, now that we have recovered our freedom, to confess our thanks to God even for discourse itself;
1:37
and above all, to honor him also with other offerings, sparing nothing — neither money nor possessions, which, though they became the prey of that season and of his tyranny, the loving-kindness of God preserved — but to honor him above all with discourse, the righteous fruit-offering common to all who have partaken of his grace.
1:38
But let this discourse concerning discourse itself now suffice —
1:39
lest, by extending it further, we fall outside the proper occasion, and seem to be more intent upon something else than that for which we have assembled.
1:40
如今我的言辭已迫不及待,躍然奔向這慶典的歡欣,與所見之景一同歡愉,並召喚眾人進入一場屬靈的舞蹈——凡曾晝夜致力於禁食、哭泣、懇求,祈求脫離那纏繞不放的苦難,並以那使人不至蒙羞的盼望作為患難中最恰當的良藥之人,皆在此列;
But now my discourse leaps and hastens toward festal celebration, and rejoices together with what is seen, and calls all to a spiritual dance — as many as devoted themselves to fastings, and weeping, and supplication, asking night and day for deliverance from the afflictions that held them fast, and making, as a fitting remedy amid evils, the hope that puts not to shame;
1:41
以及凡曾忍受重大爭戰與艱苦,且屢遭那時代嚴酷猛烈之攻擊,如使徒所言,成為世人與天使共觀之戲場的人;
and as many as, having endured great contests and struggles, and having been struck by many harsh assaults of that time, became a spectacle to the world, both to angels and to men, according to the voice of the Apostle;
1:42
他們的身體雖然疲憊,靈魂卻始終未被征服,靠著那使他們剛強的基督,凡事都能得勝;
and while their bodies grew weary, remained unconquered in their souls, being strong in all things through the Christ who empowered them;
1:43
and as many as, having laid aside the worldly substance and dominion of wickedness, either received with joy the plundering of their possessions, or were unjustly driven — as it is called — into exile from their own land, or from husbands, or wives, or parents, or children, or by whatever other names we are held by the ties of this lesser kinship; who, having been parted from these for a little while, and having borne, unto the blood of Christ, the sufferings endured for Christ's sake as their fruit, might now say and sing in due season that word: 'Thou hast caused men to ride over our heads;'
1:44
we went through fire and through water;
1:45
and thou broughtest us out into a place of refreshment.
1:46
我也召喚另一部分人前來赴會——他們雖承認萬有之神,且在此範圍內思慮健全,卻不深入探究上主護理的道理;那護理常常藉著看似相反的境況,安排更美好的結局,並以其良善邀人悔改歸正;然而他們卻因心靈的貧乏與輕浮,眼見那不敬之人在思念中妄自尊大,便如詩篇所言「不能忍受罪人的平順」,心中焦躁如火中燒,既不能忍耐神的旨意,也不能堅忍到底;
I call also the other portion to the festival — those who, while confessing the God of all, and being sound in their reasoning up to this point, yet do not enter into the ways of providence, which often orders what is better out of what seems contrary, and by its goodness invites correction; but who, on account of poverty of soul and levity, while the impious man exalts himself in his reckonings, are inflamed and kindled, 'not bearing the peace of sinners,' as the Psalm indeed says, nor enduring the counsel of God, nor being patient unto the end;
1:47
but being ever slaves to present things and to what is seen, are confirmed in the truth by such wonders as these.
1:48
我也召喚那些為著這世界的舞台與其宏大戲場而心神不寧的靈魂;
I call also the souls fluttered about the stage-scene of this world, and its great theater;
1:49
and I call them indeed with the very words of Isaiah:
1:50
'Women coming from the spectacle, come'; and having turned back the soul's eye from its wandering abroad, 'be still, and know that he is God,' exalted among the nations, exalted in the earth — ever exalted in all the wonders and marvels he has wrought, and now yet more manifestly still.
1:51
但願那一群人也是我這詩班的一員——那曾與我們一同向神獻唱、既非虛假、亦非不堪的歌聲的一群人,那曾一度被視為配站在右邊,且我相信不久之後仍將再度被視為配站在右邊的一群人——不知他們遭遇了何事,竟突然改變曲調、更換行列;
Would that that band too were part of my choir — that assembly which, until now, sang together with us to God no counterfeit song, nor unworthy one, but was even once accounted worthy to stand at the right hand, and which, I believe, will again soon be accounted worthy — that assembly which, I know not what has befallen it, suddenly changes its tune, and shifts its ranks;
1:52
and not even by our common joy is it drawn back — which I marvel at all the more.
1:53
反倒自立一種既無韻律、亦不和諧的舞蹈;
but sets up for itself a dance that is neither well-ordered nor harmonious;
1:54
這一點,或許連他們自己也會容我如此直言;
for this much, perhaps, even they themselves will grant me to say;
1:55
但究竟是何種、何等的〔舞蹈〕呢?雖然熱忱催逼我繼續言說,但信實卻約束了我;
but of what sort, and what kind is it? Though zeal stirs me to say more, yet faith restrains me;
1:56
and I shall hold back the unpleasant part of my discourse, out of reverence for hope.
1:57
我仍舊看重昔日的愛,過於他們如今的輕慢;
I still give greater weight to my former love than to their present contempt;
1:58
and for this reason I become the more forbearing, that I may reproach the more fervently hereafter.
1:59
有一部分人,一類靈魂,我要將他們逐出此慶典之外——我為他們呻吟、為他們憂傷,甚至為那些或許自己都渾然不覺的人哀悼,為那些連自身滅亡也毫無知覺之人痛哭;
One portion, one race of souls, I banish from the festival — groaning and grieving, and lamenting those who perhaps do not even perceive their state, mourning those who are not even aware of their own destruction;
1:60
因為這正是他們苦難中最堪憐憫之處;
for this is the most pitiable part of their affliction;
1:61
然而我仍要將他們逐出——那些並非撒在堅固不搖之磐石上,而是撒在乾旱貧瘠之地上的人;
yet I banish them nonetheless — those who were sown, not upon the firm and unshaken rock, but upon dry and barren ground;
1:62
these are they who approached the word superficially, with little faith, and, because they had no depth of soil, sprang up at once and put themselves forward, that they might please those around them; but then, under a brief assault of the evil one, and a slight scorching heat of trials, they withered and died.
1:63
而比這些人更為惡劣、更當被逐出此慶典之外的,是那些連片刻都未曾抵擋那個時代之人;他們竟被那惡毒的一夥擄去、陷入邪惡的擄掠,遠離了那位升上高天、又以美善的方式擄掠我們之主;
And still worse than these, and even more to be banished from the festival, are those who did not resist that season even for a little while, but let themselves be led away into that evil captivity by those very ones — away from him who ascended on high, and who led us captive in a good captivity;
1:64
but showed themselves wicked and cheaply bought beyond all necessity, not having held out even for a little while, nor having been offended for the Word's sake by any affliction or trial that befell them, but — wretched men — having sold off their own salvation for the sake of some passing gain, or courtly favor, or petty power.
1:65
Now that we have, by this discourse, purged the fullness of the choir, come — as far as our power allows — having purified both bodies and souls, and having taken up one voice, harmonized together in one Spirit, let us sing that song of victory which Israel once sang over the Egyptians who were covered by the Red Sea, with Miriam leading, and striking up the timbrel:
1:66
「馬和騎馬的,他已拋下」——並非拋入海中,這一句我要就著這首歌稍作調整——而是拋往他所喜悅之處,並按他自己所判定為義的方式;
'Horse and rider he has thrown' — not into the sea, for this I adapt from the song — but wherever it pleased him, and however he himself deemed right;
1:67
'He who makes all things, and transforms them' — as Amos somewhere says in his prophecy, philosophizing most divinely —
1:68
他彷彿藉著某種循環的軌跡,引導並統管全世界,以及我們的一切事務——這些事同時是動搖的,又是不動搖的,隨著變遷而遷動、翻轉,時而如此,時而又如彼;
guiding and conducting, as through some circling course, the whole world, and our affairs — things at once shaken and yet unshaken, moved and overturned by their changes, and being now one way, now another;
1:69
然而在他護理的秩序中,卻是穩固不移的,即便它所行的道路看似相反——這些道路對於「道」而言原是明明可見的,惟獨我們無從知曉;
yet fixed and immovable in the order of his providence, even though it proceeds by contrary paths — paths plain indeed to the Word, but unknown to us;
1:70
who casts down rulers from their thrones, and adorns with a diadem him who was not so much as suspected of such a fate.
1:71
For this too I take from the divine Scripture:
1:72
He who girds courage upon feeble knees, and shatters the arms of the sinner and the wicked — these words too from another ode, so that each point may come to mind, as many voices fill up the hymn for me and join together in the thanksgiving:
1:73
He who lets be seen both the impious man's exaltation that rises above the cedars, and his abasement into no longer being:
1:74
when we are able to pass by his impiety with swiftness and sureness of foot
1:75
Who shall worthily sing these things, and recount them among those who recount the things of God? Who shall tell of the mighty deeds of the Lord, and make heard all his praises? What voice, or what power of speech, shall be made equal to the wonder? Who broke the weapon, and the sword, and the war? Who crushed the heads of the dragons upon the water? Who gave him as food to the peoples to whom he also delivered him? Who turned the storm into a breeze? Who said to the sea, 'Be silent, be muzzled'; and, 'In you shall your waves be broken'?
1:76
因為我們並非像義人那樣被交付出去——那是少數人、鮮少發生的事;
For it was not as righteous men that we were delivered up — for that happens to few, and rarely;
1:77
為要使他們像高貴的競技者一樣,使那試探者蒙羞;
so that, like noble athletes, they might put the tempter to shame;
1:78
but as sinners we were condemned, then were shown mercy in a fatherly and guardian-like manner — struck only so far as to be brought to soberness, admonished only so far as to be turned back to him.
1:79
因為祂責備了我們,卻不是在忿怒中;
For he rebuked us, but not in wrath;
1:80
祂管教了我們,卻不是在惱怒中;
and he chastened us, but not in anger;
1:81
showing through both his loving-kindness — both in the reminder and in the release.
1:82
Who is he that executed vengeance among the nations, and rebukes among the peoples? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.
1:83
I find one voice, one song, in some way worthy of the present occasion, which Isaiah uttered before us, exceedingly fitting for the present time, and rivaling the greatness of the benefit received:
1:84
願諸天從上歡騰,願雲彩降下公義;
Let the heavens rejoice from above, and let the clouds rain down righteousness;
1:85
願群山迸發喜樂,願眾岡陵發出歡呼;
let the mountains break forth into gladness, and the hills into exultation;
1:86
因為凡受造之物,以及諸天上的能力,也都對這樣的事有所感知——至少依我的看法是如此;
since indeed all creation, and the heavenly powers too, share in the perception of such things, as at least my own reasoning holds;
1:87
for it does not only groan together and travail together, in bondage to corruption — I mean, subject to the things below that come to be and pass away — eagerly awaiting their end and their revelation, that it too may then obtain the freedom that is hoped for, as now unwillingly bound to these things by the power of him who created it; but it also joins in glorifying and joins in exulting with the children of God as they rejoice.
1:88
因此——因為我在闡明神聖的大能之時,決不會迴避神聖的話語——願曠野歡騰,願它如百合花一般開放:就是那昨日、前日看似還是寡居無夫的教會,以及一切至今仍蜷縮在不敬虔那嫉妒而無歡的寒冬之下的靈魂;
Therefore — for I will not refrain from divine words while expounding a divine power — let the desert rejoice, and let it blossom as the lily: the Church that but yesterday and the day before, as it seemed, was a widow and husbandless, and every soul that until now has been shrunk together beneath the envious and joyless winter of impiety;
1:89
因為主已憐恤了祂的百姓,並未撇棄祂的產業;
for the Lord has had mercy on his people, and has not abandoned his inheritance;
1:90
因為祂行了奇妙的事,成就了古老而真實的旨意;
for he has done wondrous things, an ancient and true counsel;
1:91
而這旨意乃是:喜悅那些敬畏祂的人,以及那些仰望祂憐憫的人;
and this was the counsel: to take pleasure in those who fear him, and in those who hope in his mercy;
1:92
因為祂打破了銅門,砸斷了鐵閂;
for he broke the gates of bronze, and shattered the bars of iron;
1:93
on account of our transgressions we were brought low, but we were called back again, and, the snare being broken, we were delivered by the grace of him who called us, of God who comforts the lowly in heart.
1:94
你們看見了嗎,我如何以神聖的話語和神聖的思想編織這首歌?我不知道為何我竟因這屬乎別人之物而自覺高舉、自覺增光,彷彿因這歡愉而如有神感似的;
Do you see how I weave my song out of divine words and divine thoughts? And I do not know how it is that I am exalted and adorned by what belongs to another, and become, as it were, inspired by the sheer pleasure of it;
1:95
while I hold in dishonor everything low and merely human, joining one thing to another and fitting them together, and bringing into one the utterances of that same Spirit? 15.
1:96
從前,神曾這樣顯明祂的奇事:以諾被遷移,以利亞被接去,挪亞得保全——並藉著一小塊木頭,在普世逃避洪水氾濫之際,為自己保存了世間各族的種子——好叫大地能再次被更敬虔的居民所裝飾;
Now formerly God showed forth his wonders: Enoch being translated, Elijah being taken up, Noah being preserved — and preserving with himself, in a small piece of wood, the seeds of the world's races, while the inhabited world fled the flood — so that the earth might again be adorned with more pious inhabitants;
1:97
亞伯拉罕蒙召,又蒙超乎其年歲所應得的尊榮,得了一個兒子,為要憑信仰望另一應許的後裔,並甘心將他的獨生子獻為祭,卻在那孩子的位置上領受了一頭陌生的犧牲;
Abraham being called, and honored beyond his years with a son, in faith of another promised seed, and offering his only-begotten as a willing sacrifice, and receiving in the boy's place a strange victim;
1:98
不敬虔者驚人的滅亡,被火與硫磺所吞沒;敬虔者更加驚人的被救拔而出;一根鹽柱昭示著那轉身顧念惡事的下場;
the astonishing destruction of the impious, overwhelmed with fire and brimstone; the even more astonishing snatching-away of the pious; a pillar of salt triumphantly displaying the turning back toward evil;
1:99
還有約瑟,被賣,被人所貪戀,卻持守貞潔,蒙神賜予智慧,得了自由,掌了大權,並照著更大的計畫分糧賑濟;
Joseph too, being sold, and being desired, and remaining chaste, and being made wise by God, and being set free, and gaining power, and dispensing grain in service of a greater providence;
1:100
摩西蒙神顯現,得了律法又頒佈律法,向法老成為神一般的人物,並引導以色列人朝著應許之地前行;
Moses being deemed worthy of a theophany, and being given the law and giving the law, and becoming a god to Pharaoh, and leading Israel toward the land of promise;
1:101
埃及人所遭遇、數算過的災殃,以及那些在埃及人中間勞苦之人所得的拯救;
the numbered plagues of the Egyptians, and the salvation of those who toiled in the very midst of the Egyptians;
1:102
the sea withdrawing at the rod, and closing together at the word, escorting some across as on dry land, and, according to its own nature, flowing back upon others
1:103
以及隨之而來的其餘一切:白晝有雲柱遮蔭,黑夜有火柱照明,二者皆為引路;
and all the other things that followed upon these: a pillar of cloud overshadowing by day, a pillar of fire giving light by night, both of them guiding the way;
1:104
曠野中降下的糧食,從天而降的肉食;
bread raining down in the wilderness, meat sent down from heaven;
1:105
前者按著所需而量給,後者則甚至超過所需;
the one proportioned to need, the other even beyond need;
1:106
從磐石中出的水,一次是湧出,一次是變甜;
water from the rock, the one brought forth, the other made sweet;
1:107
亞瑪力人因禱告而被制伏,又因那不可言喻、奧秘的舉手姿態而被制伏;
Amalek warred down by prayer, and by an unspoken, mystical posture of the hands;
1:108
太陽止住,月亮停留,約旦河被攔阻回流;
the sun standing still, and the moon held back, and the Jordan turned back;
1:109
城牆因祭司的繞行、號角的聲音,以及那具有能力的數目而被震塌;
walls shaken down by the circling of priests, and by the sound of trumpets, and by a number that held power;
1:110
地面與羊毛,交替著或濕潤或乾燥;
the ground and the fleece, alternately being wetted and remaining dry;
1:111
力量存於頭髮之中,足以抵擋整支軍隊;
strength residing in hair, counterbalancing a whole army;
1:112
a few chosen men lapping water, and being trusted to conquer, and conquering, according to the hopes placed in them — the small number overcoming the far greater thousands
1:113
Why must I number one by one all that has been wrought through Christ himself at his saving advent and incarnation, and all that, after him and through him, has been worked as wonders by his sacred apostles and the ministers of the word? How many books and how many records bear witness to these things, so that another generation, and the successions of generations, might know the wonders of the might of God!
1:114
但既然若不先陳明那危險的巨大,便無法將這些事說明清楚;
But since it is not possible to make these things clear without first setting forth the magnitude of the danger;
1:115
而這一點若不先揭露其性情之惡毒,說明他是從何等的根源、何等邪惡的種子墮入如此巨大的不幸之中——漸漸地增長其不敬虔,正如最凶毒的爬蟲與野獸增長其毒液一般——也是無法辦到的;至於他一切的所作所為,我們就把演述其全部悲劇的工作留給典籍與史書去做吧;
and this in turn is not possible without exposing the malice of his character, and from what beginnings and seeds of wickedness he fell into so great a misfortune, gradually increasing his impiety just as the most bitter of reptiles and beasts increase their venom — we shall leave it to books and histories to enact in full tragic detail all that he did;
1:116
因為我們實在沒有閒暇,去講述比眼前這主題所需更長的篇幅;
for we have no leisure to rehearse at greater length than the present subject requires;
1:117
but going through a few things out of many, we shall leave behind for those who come after us something like an inscribed stele, proceeding in our discourse to the most important and most notorious of the events concerning him.
1:118
In the first place, he was saved by the great Constantius, who had just succeeded his father to the power (at the time when the army rose in arms against those in office, making innovation out of fear of innovation, and the palace was being reconstituted under new masters) —
1:119
他對自己的獲救竟毫無感恩之心——既不感念那使他得救的皇帝;
he had no gratitude for his salvation — not toward the emperor through whom he had been saved;
1:120
but he was found evil toward both: toward the one, being in travail with apostasy; toward the other, with rebellion.
1:121
但在這些事之前,我必須先說一件事:他們曾在皇家的一處莊園中,蒙那位最仁慈的皇帝賜以王室的供養與照料,被當作皇族僅存的遺胤而為王位保存下來;
But what I must say before these things: they were deemed worthy of royal sustenance and attendance in one of the imperial estates, by the most humane emperor, as being preserved for the throne as remnants of the family;
1:122
一方面,這是為他在位之初所發生的那些革新之事籌謀辯解,彷彿那些事並非出於他自己的意思而擅自為之;
at once devising a defense for the innovations that had been done at the beginning of his reign, as though they had not been ventured by his own judgment;
1:123
另一方面,也是要藉著與他們分享王位,來顯示自己的寬宏大量;
and at the same time seeking to display his magnanimity by sharing the throne with them;
1:124
and thirdly, to establish his rule more securely through these additions — a plan of one whose intentions were more kindly than wise.
1:125
既然他們對一切政務都尚有餘暇——因他們的王位尚屬未來、還在籌劃之中,而他們的年歲連同前程也還未使他們達到次一等的官職——他們便也延請其他學科的教師,由那位神聖的皇帝親屬使他們遍習全套的通才教育;
Since they had leisure from all affairs — their royal position being still in the future and only being contemplated, while their age together with their prospects did not yet bring them to the second ranks of office — they made use also of teachers of the other branches of learning, their imperial kinsman having them fully instructed in the whole cycle of general education;
1:126
他們更多地取用了我們的哲學,不僅是那關乎言辭的哲學,也是那藉著品行而具有敬虔的哲學;
and they made even greater use of our own philosophy, not that concerned with words alone, but that which through conduct also possesses piety;
1:127
與最誠篤的人交往,也與最美好的事蹟為伍,那些事蹟大大彰顯了美德;
consorting with the most earnest of men, and with the most graceful of deeds, deeds that carried within them a great display of virtue;
1:128
indeed, they even enrolled themselves in the ranks of the clergy, so far as even to read the divine books aloud to the people, considering this to be inferior in glory to nothing, but rather piety to be the greatest ornament of all.
1:129
他們藉著極其奢華的殉道者紀念祠、藉著慷慨捐獻的還願祭物,以及一切標誌著敬畏神之心的事物,顯明了自己愛慕智慧、愛慕基督之心;
By most costly memorials to the martyrs, and by lavish offerings of votive gifts, and by all the things whereby the fear of God is marked, they made known their love of wisdom and their love of Christ;
1:130
其中一人(迦盧斯),確實是真心敬虔的;
the one, truly and in fact being pious;
1:131
因為他雖然生性較為急躁,但在敬虔上卻是真誠無偽的;
for indeed, even though he was rather hot-tempered by nature, he was nonetheless genuine in his piety;
1:132
while the other, merely buying off the occasion, and hiding his malice beneath a fabricated show of gentleness.
1:133
For indeed I could not pass over the marvel that occurred — one exceedingly worthy of remembrance, and able to instruct many of the impious.
1:134
如我方才所說,他們二人都為殉道者而勞碌,彼此以壯麗互相競勝,動用大量人力與花費建造那殿宇;
Both of them, as I said, labored for the martyrs, and vied splendidly with each other, raising up the house with much manpower and expense;
1:135
但既然他們的勞苦並非出於同一種存心,其結果也就未能對兩人同樣有成;
but since their labor did not proceed from the same intention, neither did it advance to a similar outcome for both of them;
1:136
因為其中一人——我是指兄弟中年長的那位——他的工程順利完成,合乎情理地進展著,因為神欣然悅納了他的奉獻,正如亞伯所獻的祭一般,正當地被獻上,也正當地被分開;
for the work of the one — I mean the elder of the brothers — was completed, and proceeded according to reason, since God readily accepted his offering, as with Abel's sacrifice, rightly both presented and divided;
1:137
而這奉獻彷彿就是頭生子的一種奉獻分別為聖;
and the offering was, as it were, a kind of consecration of a firstborn;
1:138
but as for the other's — alas, that even from this point the disgrace of the impious was already being attested by what followed, and by small signs proclaiming beforehand great things! — his offering the God of the martyrs sent away, just as he had once sent away the sacrifice of Cain.
1:139
And he labored, but the earth shook off what had been labored upon.
1:140
And he contended all the more, but the earth refused to receive the foundations of one so unsound toward piety, as though crying aloud the earthquake that would come from him, and honoring the martyrs by the very dishonor shown toward the most impious man.
1:141
這事乃是那人日後剛愎自用與癲狂、對殉道者之侮慢、以及對聖所之不法行徑的一種預兆;
This deed was a kind of prophecy of the man's later self-will and madness, of his dishonoring of the martyrs, and of his transgression against the holy houses;
1:142
瞞過了其餘眾人,卻遠遠地預先追躡那迫害者,預先標示出不敬虔所應得的報應;
escaping the notice of the rest, but pursuing the persecutor beforehand from afar, and signaling in advance the wages of impiety;
1:143
O soul clever at doing evil, yet not escaping its own torment!
1:144
O God proclaiming beforehand what was to come, that He might either check the impiety or show forth His foreknowledge!
1:145
O wonder, paradoxical indeed, but even more true than paradoxical!
1:146
O the brotherly love of the martyrs!
1:147
他們不肯從那將要羞辱許多殉道者的人手中領受尊榮;
They did not accept honor from him who was to dishonor many martyrs;
1:148
他們不肯從那將要造就許多鬥士、其實毋寧說是要嫉恨那爭戰本身的人手中收受禮物;
they did not accept a gift from him who was to make many into contestants — or rather would even begrudge them the contest itself;
1:149
不甘受辱——當其餘的遺骸將被聖潔之手安置、照料之時——也不肯讓那邪惡的詭辯家因其侮辱而自誇;
to be insulted, while the others were to be laid out and tended by pious hands, nor to give the sophist of wickedness occasion to boast in his outrages;
1:150
免得同一隻手一面豎立殉道者的紀念碑,一面又加以拆毀;
so that it might not be that by the same hand some memorials of martyrs were raised up, and others torn down;
1:151
免得有的殉道者受尊崇,有的卻受羞辱,那外表的尊榮僅僅稍稍搶先於真實的羞辱之前;
and that some martyrs be honored while others dishonored, the honor in outward show barely outrunning the true dishonor;
1:152
也不要讓他在如此巨大的侮辱之外,還自以為聰明,妄想能瞞過人,也能像瞞過人一樣瞞過那萬中至銳、至智的神——那位在智者的詭詐中就擒獲智者之神——藉著他所表現出來的藉口;
nor, on top of the greatness of his outrage, let him think himself wise in his own estimation, supposing that, as he escapes the notice of men, so too he escapes God, who is sharpest and wisest of all, and who catches the wise in their own craftiness, through the pretext he puts forward;
1:153
but let him know that he is understood, and not be exalted in pride when he is found out.
1:154
因為,即使殉道者的神並未立刻遏止那不敬虔,也未如遏止一股邪惡的溪流那般,立即使那正在醞釀、隱藏著的邪惡乾涸或截斷——這是照著祂自己所知的理由、按著祂不可言喻的智慧與治理而行,正如祂也曾照樣安排,要亞摩利人的罪惡貫盈;
For even though the God of the martyrs did not restrain the impiety, nor at once dry up or check, as one checks an evil stream, the wickedness that was being contrived and hidden — for reasons known to Himself, according to His ineffable wisdom and governance, by which He also ordained that the iniquities of the Amorites should be filled up;
1:155
然而卻必須使這惡毒受人憎惡,使那尊榮為眾人之故被拒絕,並要顯明神在一切所獻之物上的公平與純潔;
yet it was necessary that the malice be hated, and the honor be rejected for the sake of the many, and that God's impartiality and purity concerning all that is offered to Him be shown.
1:156
For He who said to Israel when it was acting impiously:
1:157
「你們若獻上細麵,也是虛空的;
"If you offer fine flour, it is in vain;
1:158
incense is an abomination to Me";
1:159
他們的月朔、安息日,以及那大日,祂都不悅納;
and would not accept their new moons, their Sabbaths, and the great day;
1:160
因為祂本是豐足的,並不需要任何屬人的、微小的東西,以致要因人不配的獻祭而喜悅;
for, being full, He has need of nothing human and small, that He should delight even in things offered unworthily;
1:161
祂厭惡不法之人的祭物,即便那是一頭牛犢,也如同狗一般被憎惡;以為乳香乃是褻瀆;且將娼妓所得的代價驅逐、抖落出聖所之外;唯獨尊重那唯一的祭——即由潔淨的手獻給至潔者、由崇高而潔淨的心思所獻上的祭;
abhorring the sacrifice of the lawless man, even if it be a calf, as though it were a dog's, and reckoning frankincense as blasphemy, and casting out of the sanctuary and shaking off the wages of a harlot — while honoring that sacrifice alone which pure hands offer to the most pure One, and a mind lofty and purified;
1:162
那麼,若祂連那人以邪惡、懷著邪惡意念所獻上的尊榮都不接納,又有何足為奇呢?祂並不像人那樣察看外表,也不看那顯於外的,乃是看那隱藏的人,看那內心作惡或行德之工場。這事便是如此了;
what wonder is it, then, if He did not accept even that man's homage, offered wickedly and with wicked intent — He who does not see as man sees, nor looks upon what appears outwardly, but upon the hidden man, and upon the inner workshop of vice or of virtue? This, then, is how it stands;
1:163
若有人不信,我們就求那些親眼目睹之人為我們作證;
and if anyone disbelieves, we call to witness those who themselves beheld it;
1:164
and there are many who have handed down, and will hand down, this wonder both to us and to those who come after.
1:165
及至他們漸長成人,已經沾染了哲學的教義(唯願他們從未沾染!),並且從理性中獲得了力量——這力量對通達之人而言成為美德的武器,對更為敗壞之人卻成為邪惡的刺針——他便不再能將整個病症全然壓抑,也不能將那不敬虔的詭詐完全獨自暗藏於自己心中;
But when, now advancing toward manhood, they laid hold of the doctrines of philosophy (would that they never had!) and acquired the power that comes from reason — which becomes for the reasonable a weapon of virtue, but for the more depraved a goad of vice — he was no longer able to contain the whole disease, nor to keep the deceit of his impiety entirely to himself alone;
1:166
反倒像潛伏在柴薪中的火,縱然尚未騰起明亮的火焰,也總有些火星迸出,或有煙氣從深處透出來預示;
but, like a fire smoldering within wood, which, even before it rises into a bright flame, is betrayed by certain sparks that kindle, or by smoke rising from its depths;
1:167
又或者,就如那些泉水,在地下某些洞穴中挾著氣流暗自奔流,既無寬廣的空間,也無自由的出路,便在地面多處噴湧、從下方發出回響,一面被氣流從下推湧而上,一面又被上方的壓力所抑制、遏阻;
or, if you will, like springs which run beneath certain underground channels together with a current of air, and then, having no wide space nor free outlet, gush up and resound from below in many places of the earth, driven upward by the force of the air, yet held down and checked by the pressure from above;
1:168
他也照樣,因著時勢及在位者的教管,將他不敬虔之心的大半隱藏起來;
so too he himself concealed the greater part of his impiety, on account of the times and the discipline of the reigning power;
1:169
因為公然行不敬虔之事,在那時尚不安全;
for it was not yet safe to be openly impious;
1:170
但也有些時候,他向那些於察覺不敬虔比於明辨事理更為敏銳的人,透露了他心意中的隱秘;
yet there were times when he laid bare the secret of his mind to those keener in detecting impiety than in understanding generally;
1:171
在與其兄弟的談論中,他為異教徒(希臘人)辯護,超過了適宜的分寸——名義上(想當然)是為了操練那較弱的一方論證,實際上卻真是與真理為敵的操練——並且喜悅一切標誌著不敬虔性情的事物;
and in his arguments with his brother he contended on behalf of the pagans more than was fitting — under the pretext, to be sure, of exercising the weaker argument, but it was in truth an exercise against the truth — and delighting in all the marks that characterize an impious disposition,
1:172
樂於與之為伍(亞細亞乃是他不敬虔的學堂,那地方對星象學、占星占命之術,以及預知的幻象,大肆誇談奇談,並隨之而來的巫術亦然);
and delighting to consort with them (for Asia was his school of impiety, that land which makes such prodigious claims about astronomy and horoscopes, and about the semblance of foreknowledge, and about the sorcery that follows upon these);
1:173
one thing alone was still lacking: that power should be added to his impiety.
1:174
事隔不久,這權柄便藉著我們眾人所增多的不法、以及——若可以這麼說——基督徒過度的興旺(這興旺竟自尋相反的轉變)、還有那權勢、尊榮,以及我們因飽足而生出的驕縱,都賜給了他,來對付我們;
Not long after, this power was given him against us by the multiplied lawlessness of the many, and by the — one might say — excessive prosperity of the Christians, which sought its own reversal, and by our authority and honor, and by the surfeit through which we grew insolent;
1:175
事實上,保守已得的美善,恐怕比獲得尚未擁有的更為艱難;
For in truth it seems to be a harder thing to retain good things than to acquire what one does not yet possess;
1:176
藉著殷勤,把已經離去的昌盛重新召回,也比保全現存的昌盛來得容易;
and it is easier, through diligence, to recall a prosperity that has departed than to preserve one that already exists;
1:177
正如箴言所美言:傾覆之先,有驕傲;尊榮之先,有謙卑;
and, as the Proverbs well say, before destruction goes pride, and before glory, humility;
1:178
或者,說得更明白些:驕傲之後隨之而來的是傾覆,謙卑之後隨之而來的是美名;
or, to put it more plainly: ruin follows upon pride, but good repute follows upon humility;
1:179
因為主抵擋驕傲的人,卻賜恩給謙卑的人,那位按公義衡量萬事的主,總是以相反之物換取相反之物;
for the Lord resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble, and He who justly measures out all things brings in opposites in exchange for opposites;
1:180
詩人也向那使他受抑制的主獻上感謝,因他從中學得了律例;
and he confesses gratitude to Him who humbled him, since from this comes the learning of His statutes;
1:181
又說:「我未受苦以先,走迷了路;
and, "Before I was humbled," he says, "I went astray;
1:182
therefore I have kept your word";
1:183
他將謙卑置於過犯與矯正之間,視謙卑為由過犯所生,又為矯正之母;
placing humility between error and correction, as being begotten of the one, and giving birth to the other;
