1:201
從那火中搶救一些出來,將其安置在遠離下方吞噬之火焰之處;
snatch something away from the fire, lay it up far from the flame that feeds below;
1:202
施捨一點吧,畢竟你的大部分本就是從祂而來的;
give a little, from him from whom you have the greater part;
1:203
give even the whole, to the one who has freely given you all things
1:204
因為這也算是一種領受:被獻給神,其實就是被領受;
For this too is to receive: to be given to God;
1:205
無論你獻上多少,所剩下的總是更多;
however much you bring in, that which remains is always the greater;
1:206
and you will give nothing of your own, since all things are from God
1:207
又正如人無法追上自己的影子——它隨著我們前進而後退,永遠與我們保持同樣的距離;
And just as it is not possible to overtake one's own shadow, which withdraws just as far as we advance, and always keeps the same distance ahead;
1:208
也如同身量無法超越那始終居於身體之上的頭部;
nor for the stature of the body to exceed the head, which is always set above the body;
1:209
so also it is not possible, by what we give, to outdo God
1:210
For we give nothing that lies outside what is his, nor anything beyond his own generosity
1:211
Know whence you have your being, your breathing, your understanding — and, greatest of all, your knowledge of God; your hope of the kingdom of heaven, your equal honor with the angels, your vision of glory — now indeed as in a mirror and in riddles, but then more perfect and purer.
1:212
To become a son of God, a fellow-heir with Christ, and — if I may dare to say it — a god yourself? Whence come all these things to you, and from whom? Or, to speak of small things, the things that are seen — who gave you the beauty of heaven to look upon, the course of the sun, the circuit of the moon, the multitude of stars, and, in all these, as in a lyre, the harmony and order maintained alike throughout — the changes of the seasons, the alterations of the times, the cycles of the years, the equal division of day and night, the produce of the earth, the diffusion of the air, the expanses of the sea both loosed and standing still, the depths of rivers, the currents of the winds? Who gave the rains, farming, food, arts, dwellings, laws, forms of government, a civilized life, kinship with one's own kind? Whence comes it to you that of the animals some are tamed and yoked to your service, while others are given over for your food? Who established you as lord and king of all things on earth? Who — that I need not speak of each thing — bestowed on you everything in which man excels over the rest? Is it not he who now, before all things and in place of all things, asks of you love of humankind? Are we then not ashamed, if, having received so much from him, and hoping for still more, we shall not bring to God even this one thing — love of humankind? Nay, he separated us from the beasts, and by reason alone honored us above all others on earth.
1:213
But shall we make beasts of ourselves, and are we so corrupted by luxury, or gone mad, or — I do not know what to call it — that together with the barley-cake and the bran, which perhaps we have gotten by ill means, we shall also imagine ourselves better than they in nature? And as if, according to the old myths, there once existed a race of giants distinct from the rest of mankind...
1:214
By no means, O friends and brothers — let us not become evil stewards of what has been given to us, lest we hear Peter saying:
1:215
"Be ashamed, you who hold what belongs to others, and imitate the equality of God, and no one will be poor."
1:216
Let us not weary ourselves treasuring up and guarding wealth while others weary themselves in poverty, lest the divine Amos reproach and bitterly threaten us, on the one hand, in these words:
1:217
"'When will the month be past, that we may sell...'"
1:218
"'and the sabbath, that we may open our storehouses?'" — and what follows this, by which he holds forth the wrath of God against those who deal in great and small weights.
1:219
而另一方面,蒙福的彌迦則責備——或許正是這奢靡本身,因飽足生出傲慢——那躺臥於象牙床上的縱情享樂、以最上等的香膏使自己柔靡、以牛群中肥嫩的牛犢和羊群中的山羊羔養肥自己、隨著樂器之聲鼓掌,更甚者,竟以為這一切是穩固長存的;
on the other hand, the blessed Micah rebukes — perhaps this very luxury, since satiety breeds insolence — the wanton reveling upon ivory couches, the being enervated by the finest ointments, the fattening on tender calves from the herds and kids from the flocks, the clapping to the sound of instruments, and, still more, the supposing that any of this is stable and enduring;
1:220
though perhaps he counts these things not so terrible as this — that in their luxury they feel nothing at the ruin of Joseph.
1:221
for this is what he adds to his indictment of their surfeit:
1:222
may this not befall us now, nor may we so indulge in luxury as to despise the love of humankind that comes from God, who is displeased at these things — even if he does not bring his wrath upon sinners immediately, nor together with the sin itself.
1:223
讓我們效法神那至高而首要的律——祂使雨降在義人身上,也降在罪人身上,同樣使太陽照耀眾人;
Let us imitate the highest and first law of God, who sends rain on the just and on sinners alike, and makes his sun rise on all in like manner;
1:224
祂為一切陸地上的生物鋪展開自由的大地,並賜下泉源、江河與森林;
and spread the earth out freely for all land-dwelling creatures, together with springs, and rivers, and forests;
1:225
又為有翼之類賜下空氣,為以水為生者賜下水,並將維生的最初資源,毫不吝惜地施予眾生——不受任何權勢掌控,不被律法所限,不被疆界所分隔;
the air for the winged creatures, and water for those whose life is lived in the water, and bestowed on all alike, without stint, the first means of life — not held fast by any lordship, not circumscribed by law, not divided off by boundaries;
1:226
but set these same things forth as common to all and abundant, and none the poorer for being shared.
1:227
thus honoring the equal dignity of nature with the equality of his gift, and displaying the wealth of his own goodness.
1:228
But men, having buried away gold and silver, and whatever clothing is soft and beyond need, and the translucent stones, or whatever else of that kind — things that are tokens of war, and faction, and the earliest tyranny — thereafter lift up their brows in folly, and shut off their mercy from their unfortunate kin, unwilling even to help the necessities of others out of their own superfluity (O what boorishness!
1:229
O what perversity!) — not even considering this one thing, if nothing else: that poverty and wealth, and freedom (so-called) and slavery, and names of that sort, came upon the human race only later, like certain common maladies that entered together with evil, and are indeed contrivances of that same evil.
1:230
"But from the beginning," it says, "it was not so."
1:231
反而,那從起初造人的那位,使人自由而能自主,唯獨受制於誡命之律,並在樂園的喜樂中豐富無缺;
Rather, he who fashioned man from the beginning left him free and self-determining, bound only by the law of the commandment, and rich in the delight of paradise;
1:232
and this he willed and granted also to the rest of the human race, through the one who was the first seed.
1:233
自由與財富,惟在於遵守誡命;
Freedom and wealth consisted solely in the keeping of the commandment;
1:234
and true poverty and slavery consisted in its transgression.
1:235
But from the time when envies and strifes and the deceitful tyranny of the serpent — ever dragging us down by the allurement of pleasure, and setting the more insolent against the weaker — came in, kinship was torn apart into estrangements of names, and greed cut up the nobility of nature, taking to itself law as an ally of its dominion.
1:236
但求你當顧念那最初的法律平等,而非那後來的分裂;
But you, I beg you, look to the original equality of law, not to the later division;
1:237
not the law of him who seized power, but the law of him who created.
1:238
Help nature according to your power; honor the ancient freedom; have reverence for yourself; cover over the dishonor of the race; give aid to the disease; bring comfort to the want:
1:239
你這身體強健者、你這富足者,當供應那患病者、那貧窮者的所需;
you who are strong in health, you who are rich — supply the need of the sick, the need of the poor;
1:240
你這未曾跌倒者,當供應那跌倒破碎者的所需;
you who have not stumbled, the need of him who has fallen and is broken;
1:241
你這心情喜樂者,當供應那憂傷喪志者的所需;
you who are of good cheer, the need of him who is downcast;
1:242
you who prosper on the right hand, the need of him who labors under adversity on the left.
1:243
For it is not you who look to another's hands, but others who look to yours.
1:244
不要只在財富上富足,也當在敬虔上富足;
Be rich not in abundance alone, but also in piety;
1:245
not in gold alone, but also in virtue — or rather, in virtue alone.
1:246
藉著顯明自己更為良善仁慈,使自己比鄰舍更受尊崇;
Become more honorable than your neighbor by showing yourself more kind;
1:247
become a god to the unfortunate, imitating the mercy of God.
1:248
因為人若行善,便沒有比這更肖似神的了;
For in nothing does man possess God so much as in doing good;
1:249
and even though one man may do good on a greater scale, and another on a lesser, each, I think, does so according to his own capacity.
1:250
祂創造了萬物,又在拆毀之後再次聚集;
He created, and, having dissolved, he gathers together again;
1:251
祂在至大之事上施憐憫:在萬事之上賜下律法、先知,並在此之先賜下那不成文的自然律,作為違犯者的鑒察者;祂責備、勸誡、如師傅般教導我們;
he showed mercy in the greatest matters: giving over all the law and the prophets, and before these, the unwritten natural law, an examiner of those who transgress; rebuking, admonishing, instructing us as a tutor;
1:252
最終,將自己捨出作為贖價,為使世界得生命;
and finally, giving himself up as a ransom for the life of the world;
1:253
bestowing apostles, evangelists, teachers, pastors, healings, wonders, the return to life, the dissolution of death, a trophy of victory over him who had conquered, the covenant in shadow, the covenant in truth, the distributions of the Holy Spirit, the mystery of the new salvation.
1:254
(for God has made you rich in these things too, should you be willing) — do not refrain from doing good to the needy even in these.
1:255
Rather, first and foremost give to him who asks of you, and even before you are asked, showing mercy the whole day long and lending the word, and diligently exacting repayment of the loan together with the interest of the benefit conferred on the one who received it,
1:256
which he always adds to the word, increasing for himself, little by little, the seeds of piety.
1:257
But if not that, then at least the secondary and lesser things, whatever lies within your power:
1:258
當施以援助,遞上食物,遞上布片,送上藥物,包紮傷口,問一問他所遭遇的患難,論幾句忍耐的道理,鼓起勇氣,靠近他去;
give aid; reach out food; reach out a rag; bring forward medicine; bind up wounds; ask something about the misfortune; speak wise words about endurance; take courage; draw near;
1:259
你決不會因此在自己身上受到絲毫損害;
you will in no way become worse off in yourself because of this;
1:260
你也決不會因此染上那疾病,即使那些過分嬌弱之人因受虛妄言辭所欺而以為如此;
you will in no way partake of the disease, even though the excessively delicate suppose that you will, deceived by empty words;
1:261
rather, they put forward this excuse for their own — whether it be caution or impiety — as a defense, taking refuge in cowardice as though fleeing to something great and wise.
1:262
Of this let both reasoned arguments persuade you, and the sons of physicians, and the attendants who dwell together with these patients as their caregivers, none of whom, in approaching such persons, has ever yet come to harm.
1:263
所以你,基督的僕人啊,愛神愛人的人啊,縱然此事看來可怖,令人疑懼,也不可懷有任何卑劣的感受;
You, then, O servant of Christ, lover of God, and lover of humankind, even if the matter is fearful and worthy of suspicion, suffer nothing ignoble;
1:264
當讓憐恤勝過怯懦,讓敬畏神之心勝過嬌弱;
let compassion conquer cowardice, let the fear of God conquer softness;
1:265
當讓敬虔站立在那些貪愛肉體的思慮之前;
let piety take its stand before reasonings that cling to the flesh;
1:266
不可忽視他,不可從你的弟兄旁邊走過,不可像躲避可咒詛之物、污穢之物,或其他當避諱、禁止觸碰之物那樣,轉身避開他;
do not overlook, do not pass by your brother, do not turn away from him as from an accursed thing, as from a pollution, as from something else to be shunned and forbidden;
1:267
he is your own member, even if he is bent low by misfortune.
1:268
The poor man has been left in your charge, as to God — even if you pass him by all too magnanimously; for perhaps by these words I may put you to shame.
1:269
Before you lies an occasion for love of humankind, even if the stranger's estrangement alienates you from doing him good.
1:270
凡出海航行者皆與船難相近,且越是大膽航行,就越是靠近船難;
Every man who sails is near to shipwreck, and all the more so, the more boldly he sails;
1:271
and every man clothed in a body is near to the ills of the body, and all the more so, the more uprightly he walks and does not look at those lying prostrate before him.
1:272
當你順風而行之時,向那遭遇船難者伸出援手;
While you sail with a favoring wind, give your hand to the shipwrecked man;
1:273
while you are in good health and rich, help the one who suffers ill.
1:274
Do not wait to learn on your own person how great an evil inhumanity is, and how great a good it is to have your heart of compassion opened to those in need.
1:275
Do not wish that God should lift up his hand against the haughty, and against those who pass the poor by.
1:276
當藉著他人的災禍受此教訓;
Be instructed in these things through the misfortunes of others;
1:277
給那有需要的人一點東西,哪怕是微小的;
give something, even a small thing, to the one in need;
1:278
for it is not a small thing to him who lacks everything — nor, indeed, is it small to God, if it is given according to your ability.
1:279
發自內心的憐憫,對那不幸之人而言,是一劑莫大的良藥;
mercy offered from the soul is a great remedy for the unfortunate;
1:280
and genuine fellow-suffering greatly lightens misfortune.
1:281
Man, O man, is not held by you in less honor than the beast which, having fallen into a pit or gone astray, the law commands you to raise up and lead back.
1:282
If it also conceals something else, more secret and deeper still — as many things of the Law's depth and twofold sense do — this is not mine to know, but belongs to the Spirit who searches and knows all things.
1:283
But what I myself grasp, so far as belongs to my own argument, is that it trains us, by love of humankind shown toward small things, for the more perfect and greater love.
1:284
For how much more is owed to those of our own kind and of equal honor — that love which is exacted even for irrational creatures? (29)
1:285
These, then, are the teachings of reason, of the law, and of the most temperate among men, for whom doing good is more honorable than receiving good, and mercy is more eagerly pursued than gain.
1:286
But what would you say of those wise among us? For I forbear to speak of those outside the faith, who, having found gods to champion their passions, assign the foremost place to Hermes the god of Gain —
1:287
indeed — and what is worse than this — they even hold it lawful, in honor of certain demons, and among certain nations, to commit murder; inhumanity is for them a part of piety; and in such sacrifices they themselves take delight, and suppose their gods do likewise, becoming, being wicked, the wicked priests and initiates of wicked gods.
1:288
they reproach bitterly, and press the insult further; they philosophize about empty and vain things; they cry out, in truth, from the earth, and speak into the air — not into ears well able to understand, and accustomed to divine teachings — and they dare to say:
1:289
'From God comes their misery; from God comes our prosperity.'
1:290
'And who am I, to overturn the decree of God, and to appear kinder than God? Let them toil, let them suffer, let them be unfortunate.'
1:291
And here alone do they show themselves lovers of God — where it is a matter of guarding their coins, and playing the reckless youth against the wretched.
1:292
That they do not, in fact, believe their own prosperity to be from God, they make plain by what they say.
1:293
For who, knowing God to be the giver of what he possesses, would think in such a way about those in need? For it belongs to one and the same disposition both to have something from God and to use what one has according to God's will.
1:294
But whether their affliction, too, comes from God is not yet clear, so long as matter itself, of its own accord, also carries disorder within it, as in a flowing current.
1:295
And who knows whether the one is punished for wickedness, while the other is exalted as one approved?
1:296
Or is it not rather the opposite — the one exalted on account of wickedness, the other tested through virtue? The one lifted up the higher, that he may fall the more grievously, being allowed first to let his wickedness break out fully, like some disease, so that he may be punished the more justly?
1:297
while the other is afflicted contrary to his reputation, so that, like gold tried in the furnace, whatever small trace of wickedness he still holds, he may melt it away.
1:298
For no one is entirely pure from defilement — not, at any rate, within created nature, as we have heard — even if he appears the more approved.
1:299
For I find in the divine Scripture a mystery of this very kind:
1:300
and it would take too long to enumerate all the utterances of the Spirit that lead me to this conclusion.
1:301
But who could measure the sand of the seas, the drops of rain, and the length of the deep? And who could trace out the depth of God's wisdom over all things, by which he has made all things and governs them in the manner he himself both wills and knows? It is enough, according to the divine Apostle, merely to marvel at its inscrutability and its incomprehensibility, and pass on.
1:302
'O the depth of the riches, and the wisdom, and the knowledge of God!'
1:303
'How unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!'
1:304
And, 'Who has known the mind of the Lord?' 'But who has attained to the utmost bounds of his wisdom?' says Job.
1:305
'Who is wise, and will understand these things,' and will not measure, by what cannot be grasped, that which is beyond measuring? (31)
1:306
Let another, then, be bold and high-minded about these matters — or rather, let there be no one such.
1:307
至於我,卻遲疑不敢把由此而來的懲罰,一概歸諸於罪惡,也不敢把隨之而來的舒緩,一概歸諸於虔敬;
But I, for my part, hesitate to attribute the resulting punishment wholly to wickedness, or the resulting relief wholly to piety;
1:308
然而,有時這確實有其用處:或是藉惡人所遭遇的苦難,遏止了惡行;或是藉善人所享有的順遂,為德行開闢了道路;
but there are times when it does serve some useful purpose — wickedness being checked through the hardship of the wicked, or virtue being made a smooth path through the good fortune of the better;
1:309
but this is not always so, nor in every case; rather, it belongs properly to the age to come, in which some will receive the prizes of virtue, and others the penalties of wickedness.
1:310
'For these,' it says, 'shall rise to the resurrection of life, and these to the resurrection of judgment.'
1:311
而此世的種種,則屬於另一種型態、另一番安排,一切都引領你歸向那終局——縱然在我們看來似乎雜亂無章,但在神那裡,卻自有其一貫的秩序;
But the things of this present life belong to a different order, a different economy, all bearing you onward toward that end — there being with God, assuredly, some regularity even in what seems to us irregularity;
1:312
正如身體上有凸起與凹陷、有大有小;又如大地上有高起與低陷之處——正是藉著彼此之間的關係,美才得以構成、得以彰顯;
just as in a body there are projections and hollows, greater and lesser parts, and in the earth there are elevations and depressions, out of which, through their mutual relation, beauty is both formed and perceived;
1:313
因為,即便是工匠手下那看似暫時無序、參差不齊的材料,一旦被妥善安排以完成某項作品,便會顯出極大的技藝;
since even what appears, for the time being, disorderly and irregular in the material a craftsman works — this too would prove highly skillful, once he arranges it fittingly toward the completion of some work;
1:314
then it too is grasped and acknowledged by us, once we behold the finished beauty of the completed work.
1:315
But he is not unskilled, as we are; nor are these things governed in disorder simply because their reason is not known to us.
1:316
但若要為我們的處境找一個比擬,我們並不亞於那些暈船、頭暈目眩的人——他們以為周遭萬物都在旋轉,其實旋轉的是他們自己;
But if we must take some image of our condition, we are not far removed from those who are seasick and reeling, who imagine everything around them to be spinning, while it is they themselves who are spinning;
1:317
so too do these, of whom our argument speaks —
1:318
每逢對某件發生的事感到暈眩困惑,便以為並無神的存在;
suppose there to be no God, whenever they grow dizzy at one of the things that happen;
1:319
whereas one ought rather to labor over the reasoning of it — since truth will perhaps be granted to diligence — or to philosophize on these matters together with those wiser and more spiritual than oneself, since this too is a single gift, and knowledge is not given to all; or to pursue such wisdom through purity of life, and to seek wisdom from Wisdom itself.
1:320
然而他們——哦,何等的無知!——卻轉向那更省事的路,妄自誣指整個宇宙為無理性,其實是他們自己不明白其中的道理;
But they — O what ignorance! — turn instead to the easier course, and falsely charge the universe with irrationality, themselves not understanding its reason;
1:321
and so they are wise through ignorance, or — so to speak — through a wisdom that is excessive, unwise and without understanding.
1:322
由此,有人便以「機運」與「自發」立為教條——這些其實正是隨意杜撰、信手拈來的觀念;
From this some have made dogmas of chance and spontaneity — notions truly spontaneous and haphazardly fashioned themselves;
1:323
另有人則杜撰出某種星辰的統治權——既無理性又無法解除——隨心所欲地編織我們的命運;或者更確切地說,連它們自己在這編織之中,也是身不由己、受制於必然;
while others devised a certain dominion of the stars — irrational and indissoluble — weaving our affairs however they please, or rather, being themselves compelled even in that very weaving;
1:324
and the conjunctions and retreats of certain planets and fixed stars, and a movement that holds sway over the whole.
1:325
And others, bringing to the wretched race of men whatever each had imagined, introduced these notions — dividing up, under various opinions and names, whatever of Providence lay beyond their reach and observation.
1:326
There are also those who have condemned Providence for a great poverty of resources, supposing that the realms above us are governed by it, but shrinking from bringing it down as far as ourselves, who stand most in need of it — as though afraid that, by benefiting more, they might make the Benefactor appear the more excellent, or that God might grow weary of doing good to greater numbers.
1:327
But let these, as I have said, be cast aside — since reason has already, and rightly, anticipated and refuted them.
1:328
經上說:「他們無知的心就變為虛妄」;
'For,' it says, 'their foolish heart was made futile;'
1:329
'professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God' — having dishonored, with certain myths and shadows, the Providence that runs through all things.
1:330
但願我們自己不要編造這樣荒誕的怪談——若我們身為有理性的人、身為道的僕役,理性對我們而言確實有其意義的話;
But let us ourselves not spin such fantastic tales, if reason means anything at all to us, who are rational beings and servants of the Word;
1:331
nor let us give assent to those who hold such opinions, even should their tongues run nimbly through absurd arguments and doctrines, and delight us with novelty.
1:332
我們卻要相信,神是萬有的創造者與締造者;
But let us believe that God is the maker and creator of all things;
1:333
因為,若非有一位賦予其實體、將其組合為一,宇宙又豈能存在呢?我們也要同時承認天意——那維繫、貫串這整個宇宙的天意;
for how could the universe have come into being, had not someone given it substance and fitted it together? And let us likewise affirm Providence, which holds and binds this universe together;
1:334
因為,凡是萬有的創造者,也必然是萬有的護理者;
since it is necessary that whoever is the maker of these things should also be their provident caretaker;
1:335
otherwise the universe, carried along by chance like a ship in a storm, would at once be dissolved and torn apart through the disorder of matter, and be brought back to its original confusion and disarray.
1:336
我們也當承認,那位屬乎我們的主——無論你要稱祂為創造者,還是塑造者——尤其眷顧著我們的一切事務;
And let us accept that our own Maker — whether you wish to call him maker or fashioner — presides especially over our affairs;
1:337
even if our life is conducted through contrary circumstances — perhaps, indeed, for reasons unknown to us — so that, through what is hard to contemplate, we may marvel at that reason which surpasses all things.
1:338
因為,凡是容易掌握的事,都容易被輕視;
Since whatever is easily grasped is altogether easy to despise,
1:339
而那超乎我們的事,卻是愈難企及,就愈發令人驚歎;
whereas what lies beyond us, the more difficult it is to attain, the more wondrous it becomes;
1:340
and everything that eludes our grasp exercises our longing all the more.
1:341
讓我們不要對貧窮心生鄙夷,彷彿它全然可憎、該受咒詛,是應當被憎惡的命運;
Let us therefore not rise up in scorn against poverty, as though it were altogether abhorrent and condemned, a lot to be hated;
1:342
也讓我們明白,蔑視健康——其果實乃是罪——是何等的愚昧無知,反倒當尊崇疾病為聖,敬重那些藉苦難得勝的人;因為或許有某個約伯,就隱藏在病人當中——他遠比那些健康的人更配受敬重,縱然他刮著自己流膿的傷口,縱然他日夜暴露於露天之下受苦,被自己的創傷、妻子、朋友所困迫;
but let us learn also that it is senseless to disdain health whose fruit is sin, and to honor disease as holy, revering those who have conquered through suffering — lest perhaps some Job, too, lies hidden among the sick, far more to be revered than those in health, though he scrape at his discharge, though he suffer night and day exposed beneath the open sky, straitened by his affliction, and by his wife, and by his friends;
1:343
and let us praise it as a thankworthy and philosophic thing — that by which Lazarus is saved, and grows rich in the repose of Abraham's bosom.
1:344
但在我看來,正因如此,仁愛與對貧乏者的憐恤,實在是必要的;好叫我們能堵住那些持這種論調之人的口,不向虛妄的言辭讓步,以免我們竟為自己制訂出殘忍的律法;
But to me it seems, for this reason too, that love of humankind is a necessity, and compassion toward those in need, so that we may silence those who hold such opinions on these matters, and not give way to empty words, thereby legislating cruelty against ourselves;
1:345
but above all, let us revere the commandment, and the example.
1:346
What is the commandment? Consider its persistence, and its genuineness.
1:347
因為,那些被聖靈感動的人,並非只提到有需要的人一次、兩次,便算了事;
For it is not that those inspired by the Spirit spoke of those in need but once, or even twice, and then had done with it;
1:348
也不是有人提及、有人不提,或有人多說、有人少說,彷彿這不是什麼重大之事,也不屬最迫切之務;相反,所有人都懷著熱切之心,或首先、或在最先之列,將這誡命交付與人,時而勸勉,時而警戒,時而斥責;
nor did some speak of it while others did not, or some more and others less, as though it concerned nothing of great importance, nor among the most urgent matters; but rather all of them, each with earnest zeal, either first, or among the first things, laid this charge upon us, at one time exhorting, at another threatening, at another reproaching;
1:349
and there are times, too, when they commend those who fulfill it well, so that by the constancy of their reminder they might make the commandment truly effective.
1:350
'For the misery of the poor, and the sighing of the needy, now will I arise,' he says; 'says the Lord.'
1:351
Who does not fear the Lord when he rises up? And, 'Arise, O Lord my God; let your hand be lifted up.'
1:352
Let us pray against such an exaltation, and let us not wish to see his hand raised up against the disobedient, and still more let loose upon the more hardened.
1:353
'And he did not forget the cry of the poor;'
1:354
And, 'The poor shall not be forgotten forever;'
1:355
and, 'His eyes look upon the poor' — which is greater and more sovereign than the eyelid — 'but his eyelids examine the sons of men;'
1:356
that being, one might say, the lesser and secondary oversight.
1:357
These things are said on behalf of the poor and needy who are wronged.
1:358
But let even this too goad you toward love of humankind.
1:359
For those whose wronging carries so weighty an account, clearly the favor is all the greater when they are treated well.
1:360
For if he who dishonors the poor provokes the one who made him, then he who cherishes the work honors the Maker.
1:361
'The poor and the rich met one another; the Lord made them both;'
1:362
不要以為一個只是貧窮者、另一個只是財主,免得你因此更加輕慢貧窮者;
do not suppose that the one is merely poor and the other rich, so that you might rise up all the more against the poor;
1:363
因為這樣的分別是否出於神,並不明顯;
for it is not clear whether such a division is from God;
1:364
'but both alike,' he says, 'are God's handiwork,' even if outward things are unequal.
1:365
Let this move you with reverence toward compassion and brotherly love, so that when you are lifted up by those outward things, you may be restrained by this consideration, and become more moderate than you would otherwise be.
1:366
What further? 'He who has mercy on the poor lends to God,' it says.
1:367
Who does not accept such a debtor, who will repay the loan in due season together with its yield? And again:
1:368
'By acts of mercy and by faithfulness sins are purged away.'
1:369
那麼,讓我們藉著施行憐憫得潔淨;讓我們用這美好的藥草,洗淨靈魂的污穢與玷污;
Let us then be purified by showing mercy; let us wash away, with this excellent herb, the filth and stains of our souls;
1:370
and let us be made white — some as wool, others as snow — according to the measure of our compassion.
1:371
If then there is in you no bruise, nor wound, nor festering sore, nor any leprosy of the soul, or mark of infection, or bright spot — things which the law cleansed but slightly, yet which need Christ to heal them —
1:372
那麼,至少求你敬重那位為我們受傷、為我們患病的主;
yet do you at least revere him who was wounded and made sick on our behalf;
1:373
and you will show him reverence, if you prove yourself kind and full of love for humankind toward a member of Christ.
1:374
But if perhaps the robber and tyrant of our souls has wounded you so grievously — whether going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, or catching you unarmed and unprepared somewhere else — that you might fittingly say those words:
1:375
'My wounds grew foul and festered because of my folly;'
1:376
if you are in such a state that you do not even seek the cure, nor know the way of your healing — alas indeed for the wound, and for the misery that runs so deep!
1:377
you are incurably ill: come to the Healer, entreat him, heal your wounds by means of his wounds; acquire the like by the like — or rather, be healed of the greater wounds by the lesser.
1:378
and, 'Your faith has saved you;'
1:379
and all the words of loving-kindness will be yours, if only he sees you showing love toward those who suffer.
1:380
'Blessed,' he says, 'are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.'
1:381
Mercy occupies no insignificant place among the beatitudes.
1:382
And, 'Blessed is he who has regard for the poor and needy;'
1:383
and, 'A good man is he who shows pity and lends;'
1:384
and, 'The righteous man shows mercy and lends all the day long.'
1:385
Let us seize the blessing; let us be called men of understanding; let us become good men.
1:386
Let not even night interrupt your mercy.
1:387
'Come again, and tomorrow I will give to you;'
1:388
不要讓任何事介於那衝動與那善行之間;
let nothing intervene between the impulse and the good deed;
1:389
this alone we may say: love of humankind admits of no delay.
1:390
For 'he who shows mercy,' it says, 'let him do it with cheerfulness;'
1:391
and the good is doubled for you by your readiness.
1:392
For what comes from grief, or from necessity, is graceless and unadorned.
1:393
Beneficence should be celebrated, not lamented.
1:394
'If you take away the bond,' he says, 'and the pointing of the hand' — by which I mean pettiness and scrutiny, or rather, hesitation — 'and the word of murmuring, what will come to pass?' As though it were some great and marvelous thing!
1:395
What sort, and how great, is the reward for this!
1:396
'Your light shall break forth like the morning, and your healing shall speedily spring up;'
1:397
Who then does not long for light and healing? [XXXIX]
1:398
我也敬重基督的錢囊,它勸勉我們供養貧窮者;
I also revere Christ's money-box, which exhorts us toward the feeding of the poor;
1:399
以及保羅與彼得的一致:他們雖分工傳福音,卻共同以顧念貧窮者為己任;
and the concord of Paul and Peter, in that, having divided the Gospel between them, they made the poor their common concern;
1:400
and the perfection of the young man, defined and made law in the giving of his possessions to the poor.
1:401
你以為仁愛對你而言不是必然的責任,而只是可選擇的事嗎?不是律法,只是勸勉嗎?我自己也極其盼望如此,也曾這樣以為;
Do you suppose that love of humankind is not a necessity for you, but a matter of choice? Not a law, but mere exhortation? I myself also greatly wished this to be so, and used to suppose it;
1:402
但那左邊的手使我懼怕,那些山羊也使我懼怕,還有那設立審判之主所斥責他們的那些話;
but the left hand frightens me, and the goats, and the things for which they are reproached by him who set them there;
1:403
not because they had plundered, nor because they had robbed, or committed adultery, or done any other of the forbidden things — for which they were condemned to that rank — but because they did not tend to Christ through those in need.
1:404
所以,基督的僕人、弟兄、與同為後嗣的人哪,你們若在什麼事上聽從我,就趁著還有時機,讓我們探望基督,服事基督,餵養基督,給基督穿衣,接待基督,尊崇基督;
If then you obey me at all, servants of Christ, and brothers, and fellow-heirs, while there is yet time, let us visit Christ, let us tend Christ, let us feed Christ, let us clothe Christ, let us gather Christ in, let us honor Christ;
1:405
不只是在筵席上,如某些人所行的;
not only at table, as some do;
1:406
也不只是在墳墓旁,如亞利馬太的約瑟所行的;
nor only at the tomb, as Joseph of Arimathea did;
1:407
也不只是預備殮葬之物,如那半心愛基督的尼哥底母所行的;
nor only with what pertains to burial, as Nicodemus did, who loved Christ by halves;
1:408
nor only with gold and frankincense and myrrh, as the magi did before the events already mentioned.
