"For even if he was crucified," says the divine Apostle, "out of weakness, yet he lives by the power of God;"

"Having become obedient unto death, even the death of the cross."
1:1037⧉ ⤴︎
Did he then obey willingly, or unwillingly?
1:1038⧉ ⤴︎
But if unwillingly, it would reasonably be called tyranny, and not obedience.
1:1039⧉ ⤴︎
而他成為順服者,並非就其為上帝,而是就其為人;
and he became obedient not insofar as he was God, but insofar as he was man;

因為就其為上帝而言,按照諸教父的教導,他既非順服,亦非不順服。神聖的貴格利說,這些〔屬性〕是屬於次等者、屬下者的;
For insofar as he is God, according to the Fathers, he is neither obedient nor disobedient. For these things belong to those who are secondary and under authority, says the divine Gregory;
1:1041⧉ ⤴︎

That the Father is called the God of Christ insofar as he is man, and not insofar as he is God — just as he is called Father insofar as Christ is God, and not insofar as he is man — I do not think even those on the opposing side would dispute.
1:1046⧉ ⤴︎
但若就其為人而非就其為上帝而言,其父是他的上帝,那麼也正是就其為人而非就其為上帝,他願意遵行父的旨意,而這旨意也正是他自己的旨意;
But if, insofar as he is man and not insofar as he is God, the Father is his God, then also insofar as he is man, and not insofar as he is God, he willed to do the will of the Father, which is also his own;
1:1047⧉ ⤴︎
for the Father's will is also his own, since he too is God according to essence.
1:1048⧉ ⤴︎
For if this is so, he was possessed of will not only insofar as he was God and consubstantial with the Father, but also insofar as he was man and consubstantial with us.

But it is necessary to know that the divine Apostle, in the Epistle to the Hebrews, applied to the Lord the words of the Psalm just now cited.
1:1050⧉ ⤴︎
And the great Moses, in the account of the creation of man, introduces God as saying:
1:1051⧉ ⤴︎
"Let us make man according to our image and likeness."
1:1052⧉ ⤴︎
If, then, man is the image of the divine nature,
1:1053⧉ ⤴︎
and the divine nature is self-determining,
1:1054⧉ ⤴︎
then, provided he preserves the likeness to the archetype, he is by nature self-determining.
1:1055⧉ ⤴︎
And if this is so, and the archetype came to be by nature what it is, and the image likewise by nature, then according to both his natures the same one was by nature possessed of will.
1:1056⧉ ⤴︎
因為教父們早已宣示過:意志就是本性上的自主自決;
For it was declared beforehand by the Fathers that the will is the natural self-determination;
1:1057⧉ ⤴︎
but it is understood one way in the case of God, another way in the case of angels, and yet another in the case of men.
1:1058⧉ ⤴︎
在天使而言,因為現成的傾向(προχείρησις)與其習性同時並行,完全不容有時間上的間隔;
In the case of angels, since the readiness [to act] concurs together with their habitual disposition, and admits no interval of time whatsoever;
1:1059⧉ ⤴︎
but in the case of men, since their habitual disposition of readiness is conceived of temporally.
1:1060⧉ ⤴︎
For if Adam obeyed willingly, and beheld willingly, and having willed, ate,
1:1061⧉ ⤴︎
then willing is the primary movement in us.
1:1062⧉ ⤴︎
But if willing is the primary movement in us, and yet, according to them, the Word, having become man, did not assume this together with the nature,
1:1063⧉ ⤴︎
then I did not come into being without sin.
1:1064⧉ ⤴︎
而我若不是無罪而生的,那麼我便未曾得救;
And if I did not come into being without sin, then I was not saved;
1:1065⧉ ⤴︎
since indeed what is not assumed is unhealed.
1:1066⧉ ⤴︎
再者,若本性的自主自決能力是祂自己的工作與創造,而照他們的說法,道成肉身的道在那不可言喻的結合中並未將此能力與本性一併領受,那麼,祂或是判定自己的創造為不善,而將其棄絕於自身之外;
Furthermore, if the self-determining power of nature is his own work and creation, and yet the incarnate Word, according to them, did not assume this together with the nature in the ineffable union, then either, having condemned his own creation as not good, he cast it away from himself;
1:1067⧉ ⤴︎
or else, begrudging us the healing of it, both depriving us of complete salvation and showing himself to be subject to passion—either by not willing, or by not being able, to save completely.
1:1068⧉ ⤴︎
以上所論,乃是關於道成肉身的神——道——按其為人而言,本性上是有意志的;
These things, then, concern the fact that the incarnate God the Word is by nature possessed of will also insofar as he is man;
1:1069⧉ ⤴︎
and concerning the fact that the same one is by nature possessed of will also insofar as he is God, we shall come to know from what follows.
1:1070⧉ ⤴︎
For our Lord and God himself, the very Truth, says of himself in the Gospels as follows:
1:1071⧉ ⤴︎

"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those sent to her—"

"how often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing."
1:1073⧉ ⤴︎
"Behold, your house is left to you desolate."
1:1074⧉ ⤴︎
By these words, though he willed to gather the [human] nature to himself from the error of external things, it was not willing.
1:1075⧉ ⤴︎

"so also the Son gives life to whom he wills."
1:1077⧉ ⤴︎

then this cannot possibly be said with reference to the human [element] in the case of Christ.
1:1080⧉ ⤴︎
The Savior, therefore, has taught us that, just as the Father, being God, gives life to the dead by will, so also he himself, being consubstantial with the Father and of one will with him, gives life to whom he wills.
1:1081⧉ ⤴︎
These are the doctrines of the evangelists, the apostles, and the prophets.
1:1082⧉ ⤴︎
What greater proof, then, beyond these could there be concerning the fact that the same one is by nature possessed of will both insofar as he is God and insofar as he is man?
1:1083⧉ ⤴︎
Nothing is clearer than these for proving that the wills are natural.
1:1084⧉ ⤴︎
How, then, did Vigilius, who was then presiding as pope of the Romans, receive the libellus submitted by Menas, who had become bishop of the imperial city, containing one will—and this even though it was made manifest in the imperial secretum, in the presence of the one then reigning as emperor of the Romans, and of the senate?
1:1085⧉ ⤴︎
I am amazed that you, being patriarchs, dare to lie.
1:1086⧉ ⤴︎
Your predecessor, writing to Honorius, said that "It was dictated, but it was not submitted, nor was it made manifest"; but you yourself, in your letter to John, the pope among the saints, said that "It was submitted and made manifest, having been read aloud by Constantine the Quaestor."
1:1087⧉ ⤴︎
For it is not possible that both are true.
1:1088⧉ ⤴︎
And thus it is written to my predecessor:
1:1089⧉ ⤴︎
"What can you say openly to my predecessor about Honorius, who dogmatized one will of our Lord Jesus Christ?"
1:1090⧉ ⤴︎
The same person, therefore, writing again on this matter to the holy Constantine, who had become emperor, in the person of John, the pope among the saints, said: "We spoke of one will in the case of the Lord, not [meaning] of his divinity and his humanity together, but of his humanity alone."
1:1091⧉ ⤴︎
For when Sergius wrote that some say there are two contrary wills in Christ, we wrote back that Christ did not have two contrary wills—

I mean, [contrary wills] of flesh and of spirit, such as we have after the transgression—
1:1093⧉ ⤴︎
而只有一個,就是本性上標誌其人性的那一個意志。而這一點的明證,就在於信中提及了肢體與肉身;
but one only, that which naturally characterizes his humanity. And a clear proof of this is that mention was made both of members and of flesh;
1:1094⧉ ⤴︎
which does not allow those things to be understood also with reference to his divinity.
1:1095⧉ ⤴︎
Then, also forestalling an objection in advance, he says:
1:1096⧉ ⤴︎

"You made no mention of his divinity."
1:1097⧉ ⤴︎
我們的回答是:首先,這答覆是針對所提出的問題而作的;
We say that, first, the answer was given in response to the question that was asked;
1:1098⧉ ⤴︎
and then also, following the custom of Scripture, as in all things, so also in this;
1:1099⧉ ⤴︎
有時是從祂的神性立論而言;
at one time speaking from the standpoint of his divinity;

『基督乃神的能力、神的智慧』;
"Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God";
1:1102⧉ ⤴︎
and at another time from his humanity alone, as when the same [Apostle] says:
1:1103⧉ ⤴︎
"The foolishness of God is stronger than men,"
1:1104⧉ ⤴︎
"and the weakness of God is stronger than men." PYRRHUS [said]:
1:1105⧉ ⤴︎
My predecessor, having attended to the wording rather too simply, accepted this.
1:1106⧉ ⤴︎

that is, his continually shifting from one notion to another, and being settled in no fixed conviction.
1:1108⧉ ⤴︎
有時,他接受那些稱此「一意志」為神性之意志的人,於是引入了「道成肉身者僅僅是神」這種說法;
At one time, accepting those who call this one will divine, he introduced [the notion] that the incarnate one was God alone;

有時,他又接受那些稱其為「熟慮性」意志的人,於是引入了「祂不過是個普通人,如我們一樣具有熟慮性的意向,與皮洛斯及馬克西姆並無任何差異」這種說法;
at another time, [accepting] those who call it deliberative, he introduced [the notion] that he was a mere man, disposed deliberatively just as we are, and differing in nothing from Pyrrhus and Maximus;
1:1110⧉ ⤴︎
有時,他又稱其為「位格性」的,於是連同位格之間的差異,也一併引入了同本質者之間意志的差異;
at another time, calling it hypostatic, he introduced together with the difference of the hypostases also the difference of wills among those of the same essence;
1:1111⧉ ⤴︎
又有時,他接受那些稱其為「主權性」的人,於是引入了一種僅屬關係性的結合;
and at another time, accepting also those who call it authoritative, he introduced a merely relational union;
1:1112⧉ ⤴︎
因為主權、自主權柄以及諸如此類的事物,顯然都是意志抉擇(γνώμη)的活動,而非本性的活動;
for authority, and sovereignty, and such things, are clearly movements of the gnomic will, but not of nature;
1:1113⧉ ⤴︎
and at another time, adopting those who call it a matter of choice and gnomic, and thereby making [men] masters over themselves, he introduced the Lord not only as a mere man, but also as mutable and sinful—
1:1114⧉ ⤴︎
since indeed the gnomic will is judicative concerning things opposed, inquisitive concerning things unknown, and deliberative concerning things unclear.
1:1115⧉ ⤴︎

又有時,他〔接受〕那些稱其為「經世性」的人,於是引入了「在道成肉身的救恩經世之前,祂是沒有意志的」這種說法,以及此論所引出的其他一切荒謬結論;
and at another time, [accepting] those who call it 'economic,' he introduced [the notion] that before the [incarnate] economy he was without will, together with whatever other absurdity follows from this argument;
1:1116⧉ ⤴︎

which, were I to wish to commit accurately to writing, together with those same absurdities, not even all the time to come would suffice.

因為,即或——為了向你們讓步——〔姑且承認〕那些文書確實包含歷次大公會議的教義,如你們所聲稱的,儘管你們所言並非真實,我們仍不需要你們的文書,因為我們無論從前或現在,都一直接受並擁抱這些〔教義〕;
For either—that we might concede to you [for argument's sake] that the documents contain the doctrines of the councils, as you claimed, though not speaking truly—we still have no need of your documents, since we accept and embrace these doctrines both formerly and now;

Since, then, the promulgation of these same documents was, on either count, unjust and unlawful, their abrogation too, on either count, stands as just and canonical.

Sophronius, who a little before had become patriarch of Jerusalem, made us do this even against our intention, by raising the discourse concerning the energies at an unfitting time.

Tell me, by the truth itself: when Sergius wrote to Theodore of Pharan -- sending him also the libellus of Menas, as he calls it, through the mediation of Sergius Macaronas, bishop of Arsinoe -- urging him to state his opinions concerning the one energy and one will contained in the libellus, and Theodore wrote back accepting these things, where then was Sophronius?

Or when he wrote to George, surnamed Arsas, who was a Paulianist, having proof-texts sent to him concerning their one energy, inserting also this in the letter, that on the basis of these he was effecting the union of the Church with them?

Since Sergius, in many ways, publicly set forth his own malady and ruined the greater part of the Church, the blessed Sophronius admonished him with the humility befitting his rank, prostrating himself at his feet, and, instead of every entreaty, offering him the life-giving sufferings of Christ our God, that he might not renew the voice of heretics, rightly extinguished long ago by the holy Fathers who had gone before in life -- he himself became the cause of such scandal.

The argument has duly effected the overthrow of everything that was proposed, and the inquiry concerning the wills lacks nothing at all.
1:1132⧉ ⤴︎

因不知曉「諸意志乃出於本性」這一論證,我遂依循此無知,同樣接受了關於諸運作的說法;
Being ignorant of the argument that the wills are natural, in keeping with this ignorance I also accepted the argument concerning the energies;

Since God, on account of our purpose foreknown by him, has called us to the recognition of his truth, it is not necessary to put to examination the things said concerning this, whether in writing or unwritten, to certain persons, on account of those who, as is likely, have carelessly come upon them, or who still do so, being rather too credulous.
1:1138⧉ ⤴︎

既然這一運作乃如同出於一整體,而此整體即是祂的位格,那麼這一運作便將成為位格性的;
If then there is one energy, as of a whole, and the whole is his hypostasis, then this one energy will be hypostatic;
1:1143⧉ ⤴︎

If it is because of the difference of the two natures in Christ that you speak of energies, and not one on account of the singularity of the person, then two energies will also be found in man, on account of the essential difference between his soul and his body.
1:1146⧉ ⤴︎

The very things which you put forward for the destruction of the natural wills and energies -- these same things are also put forward against the natures by those who war against them.
1:1148⧉ ⤴︎

即:若你們也與我們一同因基督裡諸本性之差異而言二本性,而非因位之獨一而言一本性,那麼同理,人身上也將發現二本性,因其靈魂與身體在本質上有別之故;
namely, that if it is because of the difference of the natures in Christ that you too, together with us, speak of two natures, and not one on account of the singularity of the person, then two natures will likewise be found in man, on account of the essential difference between his soul and his body;

how then can you object to us for speaking of two energies on account of the difference of natures?
1:1154⧉ ⤴︎
因為你們與我們一同用以駁斥那些提出上述論證以攻擊諸本性之人的話語,同樣足以使我們就諸運作一事,用來反駁你們;
For the things which you say, together with us, against those who put forward these arguments against the natures -- these same things will also suffice for us, concerning the energies, against you;
1:1155⧉ ⤴︎
but in this way the argument has struck you down on equal terms, exposing the irrationality of the objection.
1:1156⧉ ⤴︎
But going further, we say that the "one" according to the species of man is not the same as the "one" according to the essence of soul and body.
1:1157⧉ ⤴︎
因為依人之種而言的「一」,所表示的是屬於該本性之下一切個體中不變的同一性;
For the "one" according to the species of man indicates the unvarying sameness present in all the individuals under that nature;
1:1158⧉ ⤴︎
hence we do not even say it without qualification, but add "of man".
1:1159⧉ ⤴︎
But the "one" according to the essence of soul and body destroys their very being, thrusting it into complete non-existence.
1:1160⧉ ⤴︎
If then the "one" according to the species of man is not the same as that essential "one", it is therefore not necessary for us, in speaking of one energy according to species, either to call this hypostatic, or to speak of three energies, since the energy has regard to nature.
1:1161⧉ ⤴︎
然而,按聶斯脫里之說,諸位乃與諸運作一同被引入;
But, according to Nestorius, persons are introduced together with the energies;
1:1162⧉ ⤴︎
and it follows necessarily that those who speak of two energies must uphold his abominable dogmas.
1:1163⧉ ⤴︎
And yet Nestorius, while speaking of two persons, dogmatizes one energy.
1:1164⧉ ⤴︎
但若照你們所說,諸位乃與諸運作一同被引入,那麼相應地,諸運作也將與諸位一同被歸結;
But if, according to you, persons are introduced together with the energies, then consequently the energies will also be gathered together with the persons;
1:1165⧉ ⤴︎
而你們將被迫,依循自己所立的規則,或因聖神性之一運作,也主張其有一位;
and you will be forced, in following your own rules, either, on account of the one energy of the holy Godhead, to say also that it has one person;
1:1166⧉ ⤴︎
或因其三位格,也主張有三運作;
or, on account of its three hypostases, to say three energies also;
1:1167⧉ ⤴︎
或如聶斯脫里那般,言一種相對的合一;
or, like Nestorius, to speak of a relative union;
1:1168⧉ ⤴︎
for the union of this relative union is its one energy, as Nestorius himself and those of his faction have demonstrated in their own writings.
1:1169⧉ ⤴︎
而在我們自身之情況亦然:依種而言之運作為一,然諸位格卻眾多;
And in our own case too, since the energy according to species is one, but the hypostases are many;
1:1170⧉ ⤴︎
或因依種而為一之運作,你們便將被迫也主張眾人共有一位;
either, on account of the one energy according to species, you would be compelled to say also that there is one person of all men;
1:1171⧉ ⤴︎
或因諸位眾多,也主張有諸多運作;
or, on account of the many persons, to say many energies also;
1:1172⧉ ⤴︎
and thus the assertion falls entirely away from -- is condemned by -- the Fathers, namely the assertion which states:
1:1173⧉ ⤴︎
「屬同一本質者,亦屬同一運作。」再者,若照他們所說,一位乃與一運作一同被引入,而他們既已承認有諸多運作出自唯一同一位成了肉身的神聖聖言,那麼他們也必須承認,隨那些既已出現之運作而一同被引入的諸位;
"Things of the same essence are also of the same energy." Moreover, if, according to them, a person is introduced together with an energy, and they have granted that many energies proceed from the one and the same incarnate God the Word, they will also have to grant the persons introduced together with the energies that have proceeded;
1:1174⧉ ⤴︎
若他們確實決意要自圓其說、前後一致;
if indeed they have resolved to be consistent with themselves;
1:1175⧉ ⤴︎
and it will be found that the persons, and the energies, of that same one, are infinite.
1:1176⧉ ⤴︎
And again, if, according to their premise, a person is introduced together with the energy, then when the latter is removed, the former is entirely removed along with it.
1:1177⧉ ⤴︎
若此為真,那麼隨著二運作與一運作之被除去,二位與一位也將隨之一併被除去;
And if this is true, then, with the removal of the two energies, and of the one, the two persons and the one person are removed along with them;
1:1178⧉ ⤴︎
而基督,就他們所能致者而言,已從存在、乃至超越存在,落入了不存在;
and Christ, so far as it lies with them, has passed from being -- and from being-beyond-being -- into non-being;
1:1179⧉ ⤴︎

而若有人想憑其充裕之閒暇,將此論證也施用於我們每個人身上,他將發現:我們同樣能在同一時刻,既在思慮,又在行走;
And if someone should wish, out of great abundance of leisure, to exercise this argument also with regard to each one of us individually, he will find that we too, at one and the same time, are both reasoning and walking;

摩西也曾如此行事,據載他能在同一時刻,既為百姓向神代求,又向百姓說話,勉勵他們懷抱美好的盼望;
which Moses too is recorded to have done: at one and the same time both interceding with God on behalf of the people, and conversing with the people, urging them on to good hopes;
1:1183⧉ ⤴︎
而人既能依其二本性以雙重方式運作,也不因此使各個個體成為二;
and neither, by acting in a twofold manner appropriate to his natures, does each individual thereby become two;
1:1184⧉ ⤴︎
nor, because the one who acts in a twofold manner is himself one, does he confuse the motions that essentially belong to his natures.
1:1185⧉ ⤴︎
就口說之言而言,情形也是如此:我們既見蘊含於言辭中的概念,也見居於概念之下的言辭,並見二者徹底彼此互滲;
And likewise in the case of the spoken word, we see both the concept inherent in the word, and the word underlying the concept, and their thoroughgoing mutual interpenetration;
1:1186⧉ ⤴︎
and neither is a difference of persons introduced by their difference, nor is confusion introduced by their utmost union.
1:1187⧉ ⤴︎

1:1188⧉ ⤴︎
因為在合一之後,其灼燒並未與其切割分離,其切割亦未與灼燒分離;
For neither is its burning separated from its cutting after the union, nor its cutting from its burning;
1:1189⧉ ⤴︎
且既不因自然運作之雙重性,便引入二把燒紅的劍;
and neither, on account of the twofold character of the natural energy, does it introduce two red-hot swords;
1:1190⧉ ⤴︎
nor, on account of the singleness of the red-hot sword, does it produce a mingling or confusion of their essential difference.
1:1191⧉ ⤴︎
If then the one who operates is one, then the operation too is one, as belonging to one [subject].
1:1192⧉ ⤴︎
For again I will ask you the same things, bringing you back to the same points as above:
1:1193⧉ ⤴︎
Is he one in hypostasis, or in nature?
1:1194⧉ ⤴︎
For in nature he happens to be twofold.
1:1195⧉ ⤴︎
But if he operated in a twofold manner while being one and the same, then the number of persons is not thereby introduced together with the number of operations.
1:1196⧉ ⤴︎
But if he operated singly, on account of the singleness of the person, the same argument concerning this will incur the same absurdities on the same grounds.
1:1197⧉ ⤴︎
For if the operation is hypostatic, then a difference of operations will likewise be contemplated in proportion to the multitude of hypostases.
1:1198⧉ ⤴︎
Not at all — it was not because he operated in a twofold manner that his operations were two;
1:1199⧉ ⤴︎
but because the one who operated was one, [the operation] was one.

另有人也就本性向你們如此說:並非因他的本性是雙重的,本性便因此已是二,且被如此稱呼;
This another also says to you concerning the natures: that it is not because his nature is twofold that the natures are therefore already two, and are so called;
1:1201⧉ ⤴︎
but because his hypostasis was one, his nature is one, and is so called.
1:1202⧉ ⤴︎
But, that I may pass over everything else that can be said on this subject, when you speak of one operation, what kind of operation do you hold this to be?
1:1203⧉ ⤴︎

Divine, or human, or neither?
1:1204⧉ ⤴︎
若是神性的,你們便是說基督僅僅是神;
But if divine, then you say Christ is God alone;
1:1205⧉ ⤴︎
若是人性的,則[你們是說他]根本不是神,而僅僅是一個純然的人;
but if human, then [you say he is] not God at all, but a mere man only;
1:1206⧉ ⤴︎
but if neither of these, then [you say he is] neither God nor man, but you dogmatize that Christ does not exist at all.
1:1207⧉ ⤴︎
When we speak of one operation of the divinity of Christ and of the humanity that belongs to him, we do not say that this belongs to him by reason of nature, but by way of the union.
1:1208⧉ ⤴︎
若照你們的說法,運作是由聯合而生於他,那麼在聯合之前,他便是沒有運作的;
If, according to your argument, the operation came to him from the union, then before the union he was without operation;
1:1209⧉ ⤴︎
and, according to you, an act of violence took place, in his having created [the world].
1:1210⧉ ⤴︎
再者,若運作的能力是由聯合而生於他;
And again, if the capacity to operate came to him from the union;
1:1211⧉ ⤴︎
but the Father and the Holy Spirit were not united to flesh according to hypostasis, then they are not operative.
1:1212⧉ ⤴︎
但若他們不具運作能力,他們也就不是創造者;
But if they are not operative, neither are they creators;
1:1213⧉ ⤴︎
not to mention that they would not exist at all.
1:1214⧉ ⤴︎
And again, since the union is a relation, and not a thing, then Christ's operation is likewise a relation, and not a thing.
1:1215⧉ ⤴︎
此外,你們將被迫稱這[運作]要麼是受造的,要麼是非受造的;
Furthermore, you will be compelled to call this [operation] either created or uncreated;
1:1216⧉ ⤴︎
since between created and uncreated there exists absolutely no middle ground.
1:1217⧉ ⤴︎
若你們說它是受造的,它便僅僅表明一個受造的本性;
And if you say it is created, it will indicate a created nature alone;
1:1218⧉ ⤴︎
但若說它是非受造的,它便僅僅標誌一個非受造的本性;
but if uncreated, it will characterize an uncreated nature alone;
1:1219⧉ ⤴︎

and how could it be possible, the nature being created and having a beginning, for the operation to be uncreated, beginningless, infinite, creative, and sustaining?
1:1221⧉ ⤴︎
Or how could [the operation] of an uncreated and beginningless [nature] be created, having a beginning, finite, and held together by another power in order to remain indissoluble?
1:1222⧉ ⤴︎
Do you not accept and agree with us when, speaking of the result of the works done by Christ, we call it one operation?
1:1223⧉ ⤴︎
The result of one action differs from that of another, and is not one, as was shown in the case of the fire-heated blade.
1:1224⧉ ⤴︎
For even if the operation of the fire and that of the sword are united with each other,
1:1225⧉ ⤴︎
我們仍看見,火的成果是燒灼,鐵的成果是切割;
yet we see that the result of the fire is burning, and the result of the iron is cutting;
1:1226⧉ ⤴︎
even though they are not separated from one another in the burnt cut, or in the burning.
1:1227⧉ ⤴︎
just as the effect of heaven is one thing, of earth another, and of the sun yet another.
1:1228⧉ ⤴︎
It is not possible, then, to speak of one result, unless the action too were one and only one.
1:1229⧉ ⤴︎
既然你們著眼於基督所行之事的成果而定「一個運作」為教義,那麼也請將「一個行動」定為教義;
If then, looking to the result of the works done by Christ, you decreed one operation, then decree one action as well;
1:1230⧉ ⤴︎
or, on account of the infinite actions, [decree] infinite operations as well.
1:1231⧉ ⤴︎
然而,我們所探究的確實是關乎那些「所行之事」;
Yet indeed our inquiry does concern the works;
1:1232⧉ ⤴︎
因為我們所論的,並非基督之外的事物,而是基督自身之內的事物;
for our argument is not about things outside Christ, but about the things within Christ himself;
1:1233⧉ ⤴︎
亦即關乎基督諸本質的自然義理——它是因聯合而變得有所欠缺,還是仍然完整無缺;
that is, concerning the natural principle of the essences of Christ — whether it remained deficient as a result of the union, or remained undiminished;
1:1234⧉ ⤴︎
若是有所欠缺,一個有欠缺的本性是否可能真實存在;
and if deficient, whether it is possible for a deficient nature to have existence at all;
1:1235⧉ ⤴︎
but if undiminished, whether the operation is contemplated within it — I mean, within the constitutive principle of the essence — or whether it belongs among external things.
1:1236⧉ ⤴︎
而依本性而有的運作並不屬於外在之物,這由以下一事可明:本性可以在沒有作為之下仍然存在;
But that the operation according to nature does not belong among external things is clear from this: that nature can exist without works;
1:1237⧉ ⤴︎
but without the operation according to nature, it is possible neither for nature to exist, nor to be known.
1:1238⧉ ⤴︎
For by the very things that each thing naturally operates, it is confirmed, unchangingly, to be what it is.
1:1239⧉ ⤴︎
既然你們定「一個運作」為教義時,甚至並非著眼於某個作為,而是——如同一隻虛構的山羊鹿怪一般——著眼於那已聯合之諸本質的自然義理;
Since, then, it was not even with regard to a work that you decreed your fabricated 'one operation' — after the fashion of a goat-stag — but with regard to the natural principle of the united essences;
1:1240⧉ ⤴︎
而此事無可置疑的證明,就是那由塞魯斯所定的諸章,你們曾親切、且極其熱烈地予以接納;
and the unfailing proof of this is the chapters decreed by Cyrus, which were received by you graciously and with the utmost warmth;
1:1241⧉ ⤴︎
in which, having decreed one [operation], he said that by that same [operation] both the divine and the human things were wrought —
1:1242⧉ ⤴︎
thereby contradicting not only Holy Scripture and the holy Fathers, but even the very nature of created things.
1:1243⧉ ⤴︎
因為凡存在之物,只要仍依其本性而存,便不可能依其本性同時作出相反之事。火不會既發熱又使人生寒;
For none of the things that exist, so long as it remains within the bounds of its nature, is by nature able to do contrary things. Fire does not both heat and cool;
1:1244⧉ ⤴︎
冰也不會既使人生寒又發熱;
nor does ice both cool and heat;
1:1245⧉ ⤴︎
土地也不會既使物乾燥又使物潮濕;
nor does earth both dry and moisten;
1:1246⧉ ⤴︎
nor does water both moisten and dry.
1:1247⧉ ⤴︎
If then this is observed in none of the things that exist, how is it that you do not fear to say that the incarnate Word, having become man in essence, accomplished by one operation both the miracles and the sufferings — which differ from one another by reason of nature?
1:1248⧉ ⤴︎
What, then, did Cyril, the luminary of the Church, decree as contrary to the pious understanding that has now emerged from our inquiry, when he said that Christ displayed one kindred operation manifested through both [natures]?
1:1249⧉ ⤴︎
此處所引之言,與二運作絕無衝突;
This present quotation does not at all conflict with the two operations;
1:1250⧉ ⤴︎
on the contrary, it even confirms them.
1:1251⧉ ⤴︎
因為他並未說基督的神性與其人性只有一個本性上的運作;
For he did not say that there is one natural operation of the divinity of Christ and of his humanity;
1:1252⧉ ⤴︎
since otherwise he would not elsewhere have said that no sound-minded person would grant one operation of Maker and thing made — but rather, wishing to show that the operation of the divinity is one and the same, both without flesh and with flesh.
1:1253⧉ ⤴︎
As if someone, wishing to show that the operation of fire is one both with matter and without matter, should say that fire burns both without matter and with matter.
1:1254⧉ ⤴︎
由此,那位教父(區利羅)也並未說二本性的運作為一;
Thus the Father [Cyril] too did not say that the operation of the two natures is one;
1:1255⧉ ⤴︎
but he said that the operation is one — the divine and paternal operation — essentially inherent in God the Word incarnate, according to which he wrought the divine signs not only incorporeally by an all-effective command, as he himself says —
1:1256⧉ ⤴︎
既然即使在道成肉身之後,他仍與那生他者(聖父)同工,而聖父乃是以無形之方式運作的;
seeing that even after the incarnation he is a fellow-worker with his own begetter, who operates incorporeally;
1:1257⧉ ⤴︎
but he also displayed these [signs] bodily, by the touch of his own flesh.
1:1258⧉ ⤴︎
而[這運作]因與他純粹無雜的聯合,不屬於任何別的存有者;
and [this operation] belongs to no other, on account of the pure union with him;
1:1259⧉ ⤴︎
反倒[聯合]保守著它,使其得以彰顯自身;
but, on the contrary, [the union] preserves it for its own manifestation;
1:1260⧉ ⤴︎
just as the soul too, working through the instrument of its own body, both offers the properties belonging to its natural operation, and its own operation according to nature.
1:1261⧉ ⤴︎
For the stretching out of the hand, and the touching, and the grasping, and the mixing of the clay together with it, and the breaking of the bread —
1:1262⧉ ⤴︎
簡言之,凡藉手、或其他肢體、或身體某一部分所行的一切,皆屬於基督人性的自然運作;
and simply put, everything that was performed through the hand, or another member, or part of the body, belonged to the natural energy of the humanity of Christ;
1:1263⧉ ⤴︎
依此運作,那人自身是活躍作為者——祂本性即是神,且自然地運作神聖之事;
according to which the man himself was active — he who by nature is God, and who works divine things naturally;
1:1264⧉ ⤴︎
so that, through each of the two, he might confirm each nature according to nature, thereby showing himself in truth to be perfect God and perfect man, apart from sin alone.
1:1265⧉ ⤴︎
那麼,聖父並非不曉得每一本性各自特有的屬性,此屬性亦涵括其他自然特質;
The Father, then, was not ignorant of the distinctive property peculiar to each nature, which is also inclusive of the other natural properties;
1:1266⧉ ⤴︎
我是指創造性的運作,以及由靈魂賦予其身體的生命運作;
I mean the creative energy, and the vital energy imparted to his body from the soul;
1:1267⧉ ⤴︎
道成肉身的神——聖言——在自己裡面保存這些運作,並顯明其分明而不相混淆;
which the incarnate God the Word, preserving them in himself, showed to be distinct and unconfused;
1:1268⧉ ⤴︎
創造性的運作,在於他創造了本質、性質與數量;
the creative energy, in that he created essence and quality and quantity;
1:1269⧉ ⤴︎
from which, and in which, and by which the existence of beings both is and is contemplated.
1:1270⧉ ⤴︎
For even if those among the Greeks who philosophized extend beings into ten categories,
1:1271⧉ ⤴︎
然而萬物終究都被這些範疇所維繫、所囊括;
still the whole is nonetheless held together and encompassed by these;
1:1272⧉ ⤴︎
本質——藉由為那瞎子補全所缺的眼睛;
essence, by supplying the eyes that were lacking to the blind man;
1:1273⧉ ⤴︎
性質——藉由使水變為酒;
and quality, by changing the water into wine;
1:1274⧉ ⤴︎
數量——藉由增添餅的數量;
and quantity, by multiplying the loaves;
1:1275⧉ ⤴︎
而生命運作,他則顯明於呼吸、言語、觀看、聆聽、觸摸、嗅聞、飲食之中;
and he showed the vital energy in breathing, speaking, seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, eating and drinking;
1:1276⧉ ⤴︎
in moving his hands, walking, sleeping, and the rest of those things which, in all things subject to nature, display the invariable sameness of the operation according to nature.
1:1277⧉ ⤴︎
Piously and without constraint you have set forth the Father's meaning, showing it not to conflict, but to agree throughout with the two energies.
1:1278⧉ ⤴︎
Is 'newness' a quality, or a quantity?
1:1279⧉ ⤴︎
Then it also introduces, along with itself, a nature of that same sort —
1:1280⧉ ⤴︎
if indeed the definition of every nature is constituted by the principle of its essential energy.
1:1281⧉ ⤴︎
不僅如此,當使徒說「看哪,萬物都變成新的了」時,他所說的無非就是:「看哪,萬物都變成一個了」;
And not only that, but also when the Apostle says, 'Behold, all things have become new,' he says nothing other than, 'Behold, all things have become one';
1:1282⧉ ⤴︎
and whether you wish to call this 'by nature' or 'by energy,' let that be left to our discretion.
