and that he might receive from the Judge and Savior of all an equal recompense for what he practiced here beforehand.
1:1804
因為對兩者而言,對曾使自己憂傷之人存純淨的心志,都是為了他們自身的益處所必需的;
For a pure disposition toward those who have grieved them is necessary for both, for their own advantage;
1:1805
for the sake of all things — though not according to the meaning conveyed at this point, but according to the force of the remaining words, which run as follows:
1:1806
'And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'
1:1807
並且他將按公義的審判,被交與試探,也交與那惡者;
and he will be handed over, by a just judgment, both to temptation and to the evil one;
1:1808
so that he may learn to be cleansed of offenses, by taking away his own reproaches against others.
1:1809
此處所說的『試探』,指的是罪的律;
By 'temptation' here he means the law of sin;
1:1810
這律是第一個人受造之初所沒有的;
which the first man did not have when he came into being;
1:1811
而『那惡者』,指的是魔鬼,是他將這(罪的律)揉合進人的本性之中,並藉欺騙說服人,將靈魂的欲求從所許可之物轉移至所禁止之物,轉而違犯神聖的誡命;
and by 'the evil one' he means the devil, who kneaded this law into the nature of men, and who, through deceit, persuaded man to transfer the soul's desire from what was permitted to what was forbidden, and to turn to the transgression of the divine commandment;
1:1812
the result of which was the casting off of the incorruption that had been given by grace.
1:1813
又或者,他所說的『試探』,指的是靈魂甘願與肉體的情慾同流合污的傾向;
Or again, by 'temptation' he means the soul's voluntary complicity with the passions of the flesh;
1:1814
而『那惡者』,則指那藉運作將這情慾傾向付諸實現、完成之的方式;
and by 'the evil one,' the manner that, through operation, completes the passionate disposition;
1:1815
這公義的審判者,對於不肯饒恕欠債者之債的人,這兩者(試探與惡者)皆不予豁免;
from neither of these does the righteous Judge exempt the one who does not forgive his debtors their debts;
1:1816
即便他僅僅空泛地藉祈禱如此祈求;
even if he asks for this merely in bare words through prayer;
1:1817
反而容許這樣的人被罪的律所玷污,並將那意志抉擇剛硬無情之人棄置,任由惡者轄制他;
but He permits such a one to be defiled by the law of sin, and abandons the one who is harsh and unyielding in gnomic will to be mastered by the evil one;
1:1818
as one who has preferred the passions of dishonor, of which the devil is the sower, above nature, of which God is the creator.
1:1819
並且,祂也不攔阻那甘願與肉體情慾同流合污的人,也不救贖他脫離那藉運作將此情慾傾向完成、實現的方式;
And indeed, He does not restrain the one who voluntarily disposes himself along with the passions of the flesh, nor does He deliver him from the manner that, through operation, completes the disposition toward them;
1:1820
because, having judged nature to be inferior to passions that have no true subsistence, he has, through his zeal for these things, been ignorant of nature's true reason.
1:1821
依此,人被感動之後應當知曉:何為本性之律,何為情慾按抉擇(意志抉擇地,而非按本性)附加而形成的暴政;
according to which one had, once moved, to know what is the law of nature, and what is the tyranny of the passions that came to be established — supervening by gnomic choice, not by nature;
1:1822
並藉自然運作所保守而護存前者(本性之律),將後者(意志抉擇之律)遠遠驅逐;且以理性護存本性,使其自立於己,純潔無瑕,不染憎恨與分裂;
and to acquire and preserve the one law, safeguarded by the natural operations, while driving far away that of the gnomic will, and by reason to keep nature, standing in itself, pure and blameless, free from hatred and division;
1:1823
並再次使意志抉擇與本性同行,全然不引入本性之理所不容許的事物;
and again to establish the gnomic will as a companion to nature, introducing absolutely nothing of what the principle of nature does not warrant;
1:1824
並因此除去一切憎恨,以及與按本性之親屬的一切分裂,使人誦念此禱文時得蒙垂聽,並從天主領受雙倍而非單一之恩寵:既得赦免既往之過犯,又得庇護及救贖將來之事;
and on this account to remove all hatred, and every division from one's natural kinsman, so that, saying this prayer, one may be heard, and may receive from God a twofold grace instead of a single one: both the forgiveness of past transgressions, and protection and redemption regarding what is to come;
1:1825
not being permitted to come into temptation, and not being allowed to be enslaved to the evil one, for the sake of one thing: readily forgiving one's neighbors their debts.
1:1826
因此,我們也當如此——讓我稍微回顧,簡要重述前文所言之要義:倘若我們確實願意脫離惡者,且不願陷入試探,就當信靠天主,並赦免我們債戶的虧欠;
Therefore let us too — that, going back a little, I may briefly go over the force of what has been said — if indeed we wish to be delivered from the evil one and not to enter into temptation, believe God, and forgive our debtors their debts;
1:1827
因為經上說:你們若不饒恕人的過犯,你們的天父也必不饒恕你們;
For if, he says, you do not forgive men their sins, neither will your heavenly Father forgive you;
1:1828
好使我們不僅得赦免所犯之過,且能戰勝罪之律,不致被撇下陷入其試探;
so that we may not only receive forgiveness for what we have transgressed, but may also conquer the law of sin, not being abandoned to enter into its trial;
1:1829
並踐踏那孕育此律的惡蛇,我們懇求脫離於牠;
and may trample the evil serpent, begetter of this law, from whom we entreat to be delivered;
1:1830
有那戰勝世界的基督為我們統帥,以誡命之律裝備我們,並藉合乎律法地棄絕情慾,以愛將本性與自身相繫;
with Christ, who conquered the world, generaling us, and arming us with the laws of the commandments, and lawfully, through the putting away of the passions, binding nature to itself through love;
1:1831
並使我們的渴慕不知饜足地朝向祂——那生命、智慧、知識與公義之糧;
and moving our desire insatiably toward himself, who is the bread of life, of wisdom and of knowledge and of righteousness;
1:1832
藉此生之品行,以堪為楷模之方式,彰顯天上的美意;
manifesting, by our conduct of life, in an aptly imitable manner, the heavenly good-pleasure;
1:1833
and from there again leading us up to the highest ascent of divine things, toward the Father of lights, and making us partakers of the divine nature, by the participation according to grace of the Spirit, according to which we may be named children of God — that very...
1:1834
〔聽著,尼羅,〕——此恩寵的親自成就者,且按本性為聖父之子:我們以完整的自己,毫無限定地、無玷污地,完整擁抱祂;
[Hearken, Nilus,] — the very author of this grace, and, according to nature, Son of the Father: him, whole, do we, whole, immaculately embrace, without circumscription;
1:1835
from whom, and through whom, and in whom we have and shall have our being, and our moving, and our living.
1:1836
願我們祈禱之目標,正是仰望此神化的奧秘,使我們得以知曉:獨生子藉肉身之虛己,使我們從何等樣式之人,轉變為何等樣式之人;
And let the aim of our prayer, looking to this, be the mystery of deification, so that we may know from what sort of persons into what sort of persons the kenosis of the Only-begotten through the flesh has made us;
1:1837
又從何處、往何處——祂藉慈愛之手的大能,將那些墮入宇宙至卑之地(罪之重擔曾把我們推落於此)的人,提升上來;
and from where, to where, he raised up, by the power of a loving hand, those who had received the lowest place of all the universe, into which the weight of sin had thrust us down;
1:1838
且讓我們更加愛慕那如此明智地為我們預備此救恩者;
and let us love the more him who has so wisely prepared this salvation for us;
1:1839
並藉我們所行之事,彰顯此禱文得以應驗,使我們顯明是在宣告天主真實地按恩寵而為父;
and by what we do, let us show the prayer fulfilled, and let us appear proclaiming God truly, according to grace, as Father;
1:1840
而非因恥辱之情慾,明顯地被證明是以那總圖謀對本性施行暴虐轄制的惡者為此生之父,也不致在不知不覺中以生命換取死亡;
but let us not, through the passions of dishonor, be plainly shown to have as father of our life the evil one who ever attempts to lord it tyrannically over nature, nor unwittingly exchange life for death;
1:1841
since each of the two, of the things that belong to him —
1:1842
亦即天主與魔鬼——按其本性,都慣於向趨近自己者施予分享;
namely, God, and the devil — is by nature accustomed to make impartation to those who draw near;
1:1843
一者,將永恆的生命賜予愛祂的人;
the one, granting eternal life to those who love him;
1:1844
the other, working death in those who draw near, by the instigation of voluntary temptations.
1:1845
前者令人愉悅,後者令人痛苦;
The one is pleasurable, the other painful;
1:1846
and the one is voluntary, the other involuntary.
1:1847
And the one is the begetter of sin, into which — according to the teaching of the Lord — we have been commanded to pray not to enter, as he says:
1:1848
"And lead us not into temptation."
1:1849
And, "Watch and pray, that you may not enter into temptation;"
1:1850
而後者則為罪之懲罰者,藉非自願臨到的痛苦,懲治那愛罪的心性;
the other, the punisher of sin, chastises the sin-loving disposition through the involuntary infliction of pains;
1:1851
which if anyone endures — and especially one not pierced by the nails of wickedness — he shall hear the great James expressly crying out:
1:1852
"Count it all joy, my brethren, when you fall into various temptations, for the testing of your faith produces endurance;"
1:1853
"and let the trial have its perfect work."
1:1854
而惡者以奸惡之計,操縱著這兩種試探,無論是自願的,還是非自願的;
And the evil one maliciously manages both temptations, the voluntary and the involuntary;
1:1855
前者,藉肉體之快感播撒並煽動靈魂,圖謀使人的渴慕遠離神聖之愛;
the one, by sowing and inciting the soul with the pleasures of the body, contriving to remove the desire from divine love;
1:1856
and the other he sophistically demands, wishing to corrupt nature through pain, so that he may force the soul, cast down by the weakness of its sufferings, to move its reasonings toward blasphemy of the Creator.
1:1857
然而,我們既已洞悉惡者的詭計,就當祈求免於自願的試探,免得使我們對神聖之愛的渴慕遠離;
But we, having come to know the devices of the evil one, let us pray against the voluntary temptation, so that we may not remove our desire from divine love;
1:1858
but let us nobly endure the involuntary temptation that comes upon us by God's permission, so that we may appear to have preferred, above nature, the Creator of nature.
1:1859
And may it be that all of us, calling upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, be redeemed from the present pleasures of the evil one, through participation in the substantial realization — in visible form — of the good things to come, which has been made manifest to us in Christ himself our Lord, who alone, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, is glorified by all creation.
1:1860
In God, counsel and volition are the same.
1:1861
"Reason," he says, "being by nature free from praise and blame, renders passionless the one who chooses to live by reason alone;"
1:1862
and when this reason has become separated from material things, the one who is gentle by settled disposition perceives neither those who praise nor those who blame as if he were affected by them.
1:1863
他所謂「不等的心境」,乃指忿怒與欲望之動,此二者將靈魂塑造成與自身相似的樣式;
By "unequal dispositions" he means the movements of both spiritedness and desire, which shape the soul toward themselves;
1:1864
基督的門徒必須免於此二者;
of which the disciple of Christ must be free;
1:1865
neither slipping toward pleasures through the diffusion of the blood around the heart, nor being driven mad with anger through the seething of the blood around the heart.
1:1866
顯然是指希臘與猶太之言論;
Namely, of the Greek and Jewish discourses;
1:1867
of which in Christ there is absolutely none.
1:1868
因為關於基督的道理,同樣不染多元統治之謬,亦不染限定於單一位格之獨一統治之謬;
For the doctrine of Christ is equally free from polyarchy, and from a monarchy circumscribed in a single person.
1:1869
For not according to generation, or procession, that is, manifestation...
1:1870
How can one forgive debtors their debts?
1:1871
天主的公義,恰如其分地應驗於我們靈魂的心境之上,對我們而言,它成為如同我們彼此相待時所使自己成為的那般模樣;
Divine justice is fittingly applied to the dispositions of our souls, becoming for us of such a kind as we have made ourselves toward one another;
1:1872
and rendering God to us to be such as we ourselves have already disposed ourselves to be toward those who share the same sufferings as us.
1:1873
"The principle of nature," he says, "becomes also the law of nature, when it receives the gnomic will in concord for the operation of the natural powers."
1:1874
凡按天主而生活之人,其生平皆有益且有裨益;
And the life of all who have conducted themselves according to God is profitable and beneficial;
1:1875
因其能勸勉人趨向德行,並磨礪人效法美善;
inasmuch as it exhorts to virtue, and whets one toward the imitation of what is good;
1:1876
而神聖的馬克西姆——這位認信者——其生平,其偉大及廣為人知之程度有多深,其對於激勵人走向剛毅、以及裨益靈魂之功效,便有多麼超越一切、無與倫比;
but that of the divine Maximus, the confessor, in as much as he is great and renowned in all respects, by so much is it more effective for anointing one unto courage, and most excellent of all for benefiting the soul.
1:1877
因為那人不僅有超乎尋常的生平,亦有令人愉悅的言辭,以及高貴且無可比擬的競賽(苦鬥);
For that man had not only a life surpassing nature, but also delightful discourse, and a noble and unrivaled contest;
1:1878
單單他的紀念,便足以帶來莫大的喜悅,並在愛天主的靈魂中激發對德行的熱切渴慕。因此,本篇論述在即將敘述有關他的事蹟時,既願意、也極其渴望將他所行的一切逐一陳列於眾人面前並加以呈現;
whose mere memory alone is known to bring much delight, and instills a great love of virtue into souls that love God. Whence also the present discourse, being about to speak the things concerning him, both wishes and greatly desires to set forth into the midst and present each of the things done by him;
1:1879
好使此論述本身,因追念這些事蹟而更顯愉悅,也為聽者積存莫大的恩惠;
so that it itself might become more pleasant by the memory of these things, and might lay up great favor for those who hear;
1:1880
but it has no way either to comprehend all things together, or to utter, of the things it does comprehend, the praise owed for them, since even the least of the things accomplished by this wondrous man happens to be beyond the power of speech.
1:1881
因此,「以言辭遍歷一切事蹟,既非易事,亦非易得之事」——這一點,我認為自己也可合理地略而不論;
Therefore, that it is neither easy for discourse, nor readily accomplished, to go through absolutely everything — this too I think I may reasonably pass over;
1:1882
絕不致因有所省略而受任何責難;
being in no way at all blamed for the omission;
1:1883
因為在我們以前的人當中,就我們所知,也沒有一人曾致力於詳述此人一切的事蹟——顯然因為他們認為此一嘗試艱難且難以企及。因此,為了使我們不致顯得完全略過如此重大之主題,也不致因無法企及全部,就索性全然省略——我認為那將是不合宜的,也難逃責咎;
since not even any other of those before us, as far as we ourselves are aware, applied himself to absolutely all the deeds of the man, evidently because he saw the undertaking to be difficult and hard to attain. So then, in order that we may not appear to be entirely passing over so great a subject, and lest — because it is not possible for us to attain the whole — we should omit the whole, which I think would be inexpedient, and not free from blame;
1:1884
it is therefore necessary for me to bring forth the present discourse, even though I know it to be very slight, and to fall far short of the actual deeds.
1:1885
For thus I might both fulfill what falls to me, and discharge to you the debt — you, who, if anything else, exact without excuse the discourse concerning him.
1:1886
若此論述在其間,亦附帶提及當時所發生的其他若干事件,這絕非全然溢出本論述之外,亦不違乎情理;
And if the discourse should, in the meantime, also recall to mind certain other things done at that time, this is nevertheless not at all outside the discourse, nor beyond what is fitting;
1:1887
but let us, then, as far as possible, narrate from the beginning the things concerning this holy man, on whose account we have already undertaken this discourse.
1:1888
至於神聖的認信者馬克西姆,其故鄉乃是諸城之首、偉大之城——君士坦丁堡;
To Maximus, then, the divine and confessor, his fatherland was the first and great of cities, Constantinople;
1:1889
which tradition also knows to call New Rome.
1:1890
And his parents were nobly born from of old, and in worldly renown second to few;
1:1891
對他們而言,虔敬是超卓的特質,而傾向德行、親近德行則是其秉性;
for whom piety was their special distinction, and their inclination and devotion toward virtue,
1:1892
so that they might thereby bring upon themselves distinction rather from this than from their lineage.
1:1893
正是這對父母,將這位有福之人帶到世間的光明之中,並趁其身體尚幼之時,領他至神聖的洗禮,使他自嬰孩之時便得潔淨;他們不許他做任何使少年人快樂之事,也不許他的心思耽溺於那些幼稚孩童的事物;
These same parents, having brought this blessed man into the light, and having brought him, while his body was still quite young, to the divine washing, so that he might receive purification from infancy, permitted him none of the things that give pleasure to the young, nor allowed his mind to occupy itself with such infantile and childish matters;
1:1894
免得他那未經塑造、柔嫩的本性,被引向鬆懈與性情的軟弱;
lest his unformed and tender nature be drawn toward laxity and softness of character;
1:1895
but forming this noble child by sterner and more manly discipline, they instilled in him a strong inclination toward the good, and persuaded him to incline wholly toward virtue.
1:1896
他自己既稟賦優良的本性,又受過如此的教養,雖然還年輕,心中已具備德行的初步輪廓,猶如某些影像與線條,不甚模糊地描繪出未來的樣貌;
He himself, having obtained a favorable nature, and having received such an upbringing, even while still young had within him the first sketches of virtue, like certain shadows and outlines depicting, not dimly, what was to come;
1:1897
隨著年歲漸長、心智日趨穩定堅實,他對這德行的形貌與特徵便愈加精確;
and he had more precise forms and features of this virtue, as his age advanced further and his mind acquired a settled steadiness;
1:1898
at which time one could see that his reason, his understanding, and everything together were directed in him toward what is better and more perfect.
1:1899
And when he attended teachers, being concerned, as is fitting, with every kind of education, what need is there even to say how much knowledge he gathered for himself within a short time?
1:1900
他極為勤勉地修習文法及其餘的通識學科,在修辭與言說之藝上更臻於頂峰,於哲學一科更是孜孜不倦地聽講,以致無人能稍稍接近他的程度;
having most diligently practiced grammar and the rest of general education, and having reached the very summit of rhetoric and the art of speaking, and having listened to philosophy so studiously that he allowed no one to draw even slightly near him,
1:1901
因為他所投入的勤奮足以與其天賦相匹敵,故在一切學科上皆有充分且非凡的造詣;
For employing a diligence that rivaled his natural talent, he was proficient in all subjects, and exceptionally so;
1:1902
他也運用這一切學科,其中不乏助他趨於更善之處;
and he made use of each of these, which not infrequently contributed to his advancement toward better things.
1:1903
然而,哲學及由此而來的論說,他更加珍視、更加喜愛,並將其置於其餘一切之前;
But philosophy and the discourses arising from it he cherished and loved more greatly, and set it before all the rest.
1:1904
因為他知道哲學既是關於存有物的知識與學問,又兼涉沉思與實踐,且論及本性與宇宙,並將其餘一切盡皆傳授;
For he knew that it was both knowledge and science of beings, that it occupied itself with contemplation and with practice, that it treated of nature and the cosmos, and that it simply imparted everything else besides;
1:1905
故他將更多的心力投注於此,並終日將其存於心中;
to this he devoted the greater part of his effort, and kept it always in mind;
1:1906
然而並非隨意而為,亦非不加思慮;
yet not in a haphazard or unreasoned manner;
1:1907
他將其中詭辯的成分,以及一切涉及欺瞞與謬誤推論之處,摒棄遠拋;而對於涉及論證、教義以及其他邏輯方法與證明的部分,則加以認可並據為己有;
but having set aside and cast far away the sophistic part of it, and whatever pertains to deception and false reasoning, he approved and made his own the part concerned with reasoned discourses and doctrines, and other logical methods and demonstrations.
1:1908
For what had he to do with a false premise, and the weaving of spurious syllogisms, and such a conclusion, and whatever else corrupts true wisdom?
1:1909
因為可以說,他從未關心過這類事,也絕不容許自己的心思稍稍偏向他人所不當致力的任何事物——這與他相去甚遠;
For it was far from being the case—one might even say—that he ever cared for such a thing, or that it was tolerable for him to incline his mind even a little toward anything that others wrongly labor at.
1:1910
誠然,眾人皆對他讚嘆不已,因他既有如此的知識,又有如此的德行,卻更兼備節制與謙卑;
Indeed, all held him in wonder, possessing as he did such knowledge, such virtue, and yet more moderation and humility still;
1:1911
無一物能使他自高自大,也無一物能使他自視過高——無論是門第的顯赫、學問超越眾人的卓越、德行的崇高,抑或其餘一切,皆不能;
whom indeed nothing that exists ever puffed up, nor persuaded to think more highly of himself—not the glory of his lineage, not his surpassing excellence in learning over all others, not the height of his virtue, nor anything else at all among all things;
1:1912
他如此依附於節制,以致將此視為其生命唯一的莊重與誇耀,並因此比誰若一同將人間一切的榮耀都賜給他更感自豪;
but he was so devoted to moderation that he regarded this alone as the dignity and boast of his life, and took more pride in it than if someone had granted him all human glory together at once.
1:1913
然而,這位可敬之人如此生活,卻不可能不為人所知,這份共同的益處也不可能不彰顯於眾人;
But indeed it was not possible for this admirable man, living in such a way, to remain hidden, nor for the common benefit not to become manifest also to others;
1:1914
儘管他每日多方設法,以逃避虛浮的聲名,並避免被捲入世事的波折;
even though he did many things daily so as to flee empty glory, and not be caught up in the vicissitudes of life;
1:1915
他認為即便與這些世事稍有沾染,也是對德行的一大阻礙;
for he considered even coming into close contact with these things a great obstacle to virtue.
1:1916
然而,儘管他自己如此思慮、如此行事,最終卻仍不由自主地被捲入其中;
But even though he himself both intended and acted in this way, nevertheless he was caught even against his will;
1:1917
當時在位的皇帝(即赫拉克留),懷著滿腔善意召他入宮,並任命他為皇室文書的首席祕書;
the emperor then reigning (this was Heraclius), having summoned him to the palace with every goodwill, and having appointed him first secretary of the imperial records;
1:1918
皇帝如同對待這般偉大人物、出身如此顯赫之家者一般,事事皆倚重於他,並得他作為輔佐與襄助,共理至美之事;
and he made use of him, as befits so great a man and one of so great a house, in all matters at hand, and possessed him as minister and helper in the noblest affairs.
1:1919
因為他在洞察所需之事上極為明智,在提出忠告上極為擅長,在即席演說上更是最為敏捷得體;
For this man was most sagacious in discerning what was needed, most skillful in offering counsel, and most fittingly ready in extemporizing speech;
1:1920
皇帝本人及宮中眾人皆極喜與他相處,並始終對這位人物讚嘆不已;
in whose company both the emperor himself and those about the palace took great delight, and were continually amazed at the man.
1:1921
But he himself, accounting these things—philosophy aside—small: glory, and wealth, and honor, and whatever pertains to excessive ambition—
1:1922
尤其眼見當時信仰正遭受革新之害,一志論者的教義正大肆摧殘教會,他遂捨棄一切,認為與這等人往來,猶如靈魂受到玷污一般;
and especially seeing the faith then being subjected to innovation, in that the doctrine of the Monothelites was grievously ravaging the Church, left everything behind, considering that to associate with such people was, as it were, a defilement of the soul;
1:1923
他熱切地轉向獨修的生活,因他早已渴望過寧靜的生活,遂將自己託付於對岸海濱那座名為克律索波利斯(金城)的修道院,該院當時在哲學(修行)之道上正蓬勃興盛;
and he zealously turned to the solitary life, since he had long desired to live in quietude, giving himself to the monastery on the opposite shore, which is named after Chrysopolis, then flourishing in philosophy;
1:1924
在那裡,他剃去頭髮,穿上粗毛的衣服;
and there, having his hair shorn, and putting on the garment of hair-cloth;
1:1925
自此,他不斷地磨損自己的肉身,不僅施行禁食及其餘的苦行,更堅持通宵站立祈禱,懇切不懈,藉此樹立靈魂的挺立,使心智脫離物質,甚至在肉身解脫之前,便已鬆解那束縛的枷鎖;
he who indeed from that time continually wore down his body, employing not only fasting and other hardship already, but also devoting himself to standing all night and to intense prayer, thereby raising up the uprightness of his soul, drawing his mind away from matter, and loosening the bond even before its dissolution.
1:1926
因為此人早在過這更為嚴謹的生活之前,便已使自己習於奮鬥與勞苦,並遵行哲學(修行)的生活方式,那麼在真正投身於這些修行之後,他絕不可能選擇或行出別的事來;
For he who, even before this more exact life, was accustoming himself to struggles and labors, and pursuing the philosophical way of life, would hardly, after entering fully into these disciplines, have chosen or done anything different.
1:1927
誠然,儘管與他同修者眾多,他卻超越了眾人,並奇妙地贏得了眾人之上的首位;
Indeed, having many fellow ascetics, he surpassed them all, and had wondrously won the first place over all.
1:1928
他們對他的德行深感折服,甚至共同派人向他請願,懇切求他統領眾人,接受他們的領導之任;
who indeed were so overcome by his virtue that they even sent a joint delegation to him, earnestly begging him to preside over them and to take up the leadership over them;
1:1929
因為他們不久前才失去了自己的導師;
for a short while before, they had lost their own abbot.
1:1930
然而他卻將這職務推拒,猶如推開一項沉重的負累,對此請求毫不退讓,意志堅定;
But he, pushing away the office as though it were some burdensome encumbrance, was unyielding regarding their request and firm in his resolve;
1:1931
既不屈從於他們的言語,也不因他們的懇求而讓步;
neither yielding to their words, nor giving way to their entreaties.
1:1932
但當他看見他們更加堅持,甚至施加了幾分強迫時,他才勉強被說服,接受了這監督之職;
But when he saw them pressing more insistently, and even adding a measure of force, he was persuaded with difficulty, and accepted the office of oversight;
1:1933
他認為這與其說是統治的職權,不如說是一項須負責任的職事;
considering it not so much a position of rule as an accountable ministry.
1:1934
由此,他變得更加憂心忡忡,對一切事都懷有掛慮;
From this, indeed, he became even more full of concern, and was anxious about everything;
1:1935
他所顧念的並非僅是自身之事,也不僅是如何使自己活得最為完善;
not looking only to his own affairs, nor merely to how he himself might live most excellently;
1:1936
而是如何能有益地引導受他管理之人的生活,使他們得以持守更善的生活方式;
but how he might profitably guide the life of those under him, and lead them to lay hold of a better way of conduct.
1:1937
因為他心中明白,對於那些獨自修行德行之人而言,他們大可隨己意,在應行之事中選擇或多或少地去做;
For he perceived within himself that for those who pursue virtue by themselves alone, it is altogether possible, as seems fit to them, to choose the greater or lesser among the things to be done;
1:1938
對於這些人,即便他們未行大事,人們或許也能予以體諒;
and one might forgive such persons for not doing the great things.
1:1939
然而,對於一位受託引導眾靈魂之人而言,若他在嚴謹上稍有鬆懈,那危險便絕非尋常,對他自己及受其管理者皆然;
But for the one entrusted with the guidance of souls, and who relaxes even a little of his exactness, there will be no ordinary danger, both for himself and for those under him;
1:1940
此人不僅應當是至善的,更應當時時向前邁進,精益求精;
who ought not only to be excellent, but also always to advance beyond what has gone before;
1:1941
倘若他要憑藉自身的榜樣,引領受他管理之人趨向更善,因為他們視他的生活為典範,並由此或被引向德行,或反之被引向惡行;
if indeed he is going to lead those under his hand, by his own example, toward what is better, since they look upon his life as an archetype, and are thereby led either toward virtue, or, on the contrary, toward vice.
1:1942
馬克西姆思及此,靈魂為之憔悴消融;
Considering these things, Maximus was consumed in soul;
1:1943
他將肉身所剩無幾之處也一併耗盡;
he further wasted away what remained of his flesh;
1:1944
他為門徒們的緣故被種種掛慮所纏繞;
he was overwhelmed with anxious cares for his disciples;
1:1945
他有時溫和、不帶刺痛地施予教導;
and at one time delivering his teaching gently and without sting;
1:1946
有時則使教導變得嚴厲而不甘甜,視每個人的習性或本性而定;
and at another time bringing it forth stern and unpleasant, according as he saw each one disposed either by habit or by nature.
1:1947
他自己便是如此對待受他管理之人,並以這樣的心懷履行對他們的督導之職;
And he himself was thus disposed toward those under him, and with such a disposition he carried out the oversight of them.
1:1948
然而,如我們前面所言,當他看見一志論者的異端當時正日益擴展、趨於完備,並且每日在那些不虔敬之領袖手中可怕地增長時;
But when he saw, as we said above, that the heresy of the Monothelites was then extending more and more toward completion, and was terribly increasing day by day at the hands of the champions of impiety;
1:1949
他為此哀嘆,並被最沉重的悲痛所籠罩,甚至對那些行不法之事者也深感憐憫;
he groaned and was seized with the heaviest grief, pitying most of all even those who committed these unlawful acts;
1:1950
他不知道自己還能做些什麼,因這惡竟如此氾濫無度,幾乎已席捲了東方與西方的全境;
but he did not know what he himself might do, since the evil had thus poured out beyond measure, and had all but seized the whole East and the West.
1:1951
Wherefore, amid such great evils, he found this alone to be beneficial, both for himself and for the situation:
1:1952
因為他知道古老的羅馬未受此等污穢所染,非洲及其他地方乃至周圍諸島亦然;
for since he knew that elder Rome remained free of such defilement, as did the church in Africa, and that in other places and in the surrounding islands there as well;
1:1953
他遂捨棄此地的一切,前往彼處,為要聲援正道,並與當地正統信仰者同心協力;
leaving the affairs here, he journeyed there, in order to lend support to the true doctrine, and to join with the orthodox there;
1:1954
他完成這樣一段漫長的旅程,並非毫不費力,也非沒有勞苦與艱辛;
having accomplished so great a journey not without exertion, nor without toil and hardship;
1:1955
然而他仍將這一切視為輕於他美好的熱忱;
yet nevertheless he reckoned all these as less than his noble zeal;
1:1956
或許在啟程一事上,他也曾以與他同修的僧侶作為謀士;
perhaps having also taken counsel, concerning his departure, with the monks who were with him;
1:1957
縱使與他們分離令人難以承受、幾乎不堪負荷,他卻別無他法,只能依照所議定之事而行,因為時勢緊迫,只容許他啟程離去;
and even if the separation from them was heavy and scarcely bearable, yet he had no other course but to do what had been resolved, since the moment pressed him hard and permitted only his departure.
1:1958
然而,我們的敘述已然跑在前面,略去了中間應述之事——即這一邪惡而可憎的見解究竟從何而起,這見解如此擾亂了教會,並將許多人拖入同樣的墮落之中;
But indeed our narrative, having run ahead of itself, has omitted to relate what came in between, and whence this wicked and abominable opinion took its origin—the opinion that so disturbed the Church, and dragged many down into a like fall.
1:1959
因此有必要略述數語論及此事;
It is therefore necessary to discourse a little concerning it;
1:1960
and then thus to add to our account whatever else follows on the subject.
1:1961
當希拉克略執掌帝國權杖、塞爾吉烏斯治理君士坦丁堡寶座之時;
When Heraclius held the scepters of the empire, and Sergius administered the throne of Constantinople;
1:1962
起初,希拉克略本人,以及宮廷內外凡居高位、有尊榮者,皆曾贊同正統信仰;
at first Heraclius himself, and as many as were around the palace and as many as held office and dignity, happened to assent to the orthodox faith;
1:1963
承認並宣揚:在我主基督的神性與人性之中,有兩種本性,同樣也有兩種運作與兩種意志;
confessing and proclaiming two natures, and likewise two energies and wills, in the divine and human [natures] of my Christ;
1:1964
在對敵人贏得許多戰功、以及那場對抗波斯人的著名輝煌勝績之後,隨著正確教義的變質,教會的事務也開始隨之變動;
After many trophies won against the enemies, and that famous, glorious feat of arms against the Persians, when the right doctrine was changed, the affairs of the Churches also began to change along with it;
1:1965
no small portion of the people also having turned to the opposite side.
1:1966
促使皇帝轉變的罪魁,是那位被稱作雅各派宗主教的阿塔納修;
The cause of the emperor's change was that Athanasius, the one called patriarch of the Jacobites;
1:1967
a deceiving impostor of a man, and most skilled of all at confounding the truth.
1:1968
For this man, approaching Heraclius while he resided in Hierapolis of Syria, and insidiously and maliciously working his way into his favor, and enticing him besides with promises — namely that he would also accept the council of Chalcedon, or that he professed the two natures united according to hypostasis (for Heraclius had a desire, as the facts showed, to bring both Athanasius himself — to whom he also promised to give the throne of Antioch — and all the others, no doubt, whom he saw not agreeing, into union with that council) —
1:1969
though, out of simplicity and levity of mind, in addition to drawing no one over to his side, he only smeared himself with the false doctrine.
1:1970
於是,如前所述,阿塔納修以種種手段籠絡了此人〔希拉克略〕,使他原本已略有動搖之心,陷入了對「兩本性各具雙重運作與意志」這一教義的懷疑之中;
This man, then, as has been said, Athanasius having subtly won over by various means, settled him — already somewhat wavering — into doubt concerning the twofold energies and wills of the two natures;
1:1971
因此,他也說服〔希拉克略〕將已決定之事呈交給君士坦丁堡的塞爾吉烏斯評議;
on account of which he also persuades him to refer the matters that had been decided to Sergius of Constantinople;
1:1972
and [declaring] that whatever should seem good to them, that he too would concur with.
1:1973
For the perverse man knew that both of them held fast to the one energy and the one will.
1:1974
當希拉克略召庫魯斯到自己跟前,並以書信將已定之事通知宗主教〔塞爾吉烏斯〕之後,他發現兩人都同樣懷抱一志論的教義,並且毫不猶豫地與阿塔納修所思相合;
When Heraclius summoned Cyrus to himself, and by letters informed the patriarch about the matters that had been decided, he found both of them alike cherishing the monothelite doctrine, and moreover agreeing, without any hesitation, to think the same things as Athanasius;
1:1975
then indeed he became wholly of the opposite party — of the "will-less" will, one might rather say, than of the "mono-thelite" one.
1:1976
於是他又迅速將已定為教義之事呈報給羅馬主教;
And indeed he quickly also communicated to the bishop of Rome the things that had been made dogma;
1:1977
as though he thought he would be doing wrong if he did not also fill those everywhere on earth with his own leaven, and impart to them the pestilent heresy.
1:1978
但這位神聖之人〔羅馬主教〕清楚看出,來自他〔希拉克略〕之事乃是欺詐;
But this divine man [the bishop of Rome], plainly recognizing that what came from him [Heraclius] was deceit;
1:1979
並對這卑劣的謬論深感憤慨,不僅以覆函與有力的駁斥,逐一批駁並推翻對方所提出的主張;
and being indignant at the base false doctrine, not only refutes and overturns the things proposed, by counter-writings and powerful counter-arguments;
1:1980
but also encompasses with anathema those who hold and cherish those doctrines.
1:1981
然而這對希拉克略毫無助益,因為他所接受的邪惡並非浮於表面,而是深入骨髓;
But this profited Heraclius nothing, inasmuch as he had received the evil not superficially, but deeply;
1:1982
who shortly afterward hastened also to fill Alexandria with this same pollution, sending the like-minded Cyrus there as bishop, so that Alexandria too might think the same things and be ruined.
1:1983
果然,庫魯斯與法蘭主教狄奧多若——一位極力附和一志論者的人——會談之後,便與他一同締結了所謂「水色調和」的聯合;
Indeed Cyrus, having come to speak with Theodore, bishop of Pharan, who strongly sided with the Monothelites, then made with him the so-called "water-tinted" union;
1:1984
我認為此名意指一種褪色而稀薄的染色,彷彿混雜不清、難以辨識,兩種顏色皆未能純粹保留;
and I think this signifies a faded and watery dye, as it were mixed together and indiscernible, preserving neither of the two colors purely;
1:1985
好讓他們也能隨心所欲,任意攪混、混淆、摻雜他們所奉為教義的那個「運作」;
so that it might be entirely possible for them too, in whichever way they might wish, to muddle, confound, and blend together the energy that was being made into dogma;
1:1986
making it neither single nor double, nor — which would indeed be the true thing to say — even "neither of the two," such that what it truly is could be either conceived or named.
1:1987
然而這些人——正如他們自己所以為、也如他們所說服那些受騙者所相信的那樣——確立了「一個運作」與「一個本性的意志」,卻反而給了雅各派與狄奧多西一派〔的信徒〕藉口,使他們得以誇口勝過我們的信仰,並將迦克墩公會議當作笑柄嘲弄;
But these men — as they themselves at least imagined, and as they persuaded those who had been deceived — having ratified the one energy and the one natural will, gave occasion to both the Jacobites and to those of the party of Theodosius to boast themselves against our faith, and to hold up the council of Chalcedon to laughter and mockery;
1:1988
他們甚至懷著惡意用心宣稱,就連迦克墩公會議本身也顯得順從他們的立場,堅持著「一個本性」;
who also, with malicious intent, alleged that Chalcedon itself was seen to follow their own teaching, and to hold fast to the one nature;
1:1989
而這一點,據他們所言,從迦克墩會議也主張「一個運作」便可見一斑;
and this, they said, was clear from the fact that it also professes the one energy;
1:1990
which, as they claim, it would not otherwise have done, had it not been overawed by the true doctrine, and come to a more complete understanding of it.
1:1991
然而,正當此時,索夫羅尼奧斯受託接掌耶路撒冷的寶座——他是一位以虔敬與美德著稱、光輝奪目的人物;
But since, at that time, Sophronius was entrusted with the throne of Jerusalem, a man shining forth in piety and virtue;
1:1992
於是凡屬正統的主教與教長皆聚集在他周圍,與他一同譴責、並以絕罰定罪那些宣稱基督具有「一個本性的運作」與「一個意志」的人;
there gathered around him as many as were of the priesthood and orthodox, denouncing along with him, and encompassing with anathema, those who glorified one natural energy in Christ and one will;
1:1993
while praising and proclaiming those who, alongside the two natures, confessed and upheld also the twofold energies together with the corresponding wills.
1:1994
這位聖潔之人願意將已闡明之事更進一步清楚地說明,便分別將自己對此事的看法,告知了羅馬的約翰(此為其名)、君士坦丁堡的塞爾吉烏斯,乃至亞歷山大的庫魯斯;
This holy man, wishing also to set forth more fully still what had been expounded, made known his views on these matters, severally, also to John of Rome (for that was his name), and to Sergius of Constantinople, and indeed also to Cyrus of Alexandria;
1:1995
對於後二者,他嚴詞斥責,痛加批評其教義之謬;
the latter [two], rebuking and greatly reproaching them for their doctrine;
1:1996
but the other — John — as was fitting, praising, and crowning him with countless encomia.
1:1997
皇帝希拉克略聽聞這些事後,陷入了恐懼與焦慮;
When the emperor Heraclius gave ear to these things, he fell into fear and anguish;
1:1998
他內心翻覆不定、搖擺變化,不知該以什麼取代這項新創的教義;
being inwardly agitated and shifting within himself, and not knowing to what he might exchange the newly-innovated doctrine;
1:1999
being ashamed, perhaps, of the recency of the change, and the sudden shift to the opposite position.
1:2000
於是他索性與雙方都斷絕了關係——我是指主張「兩種運作」的一方,以及主張「一種運作」的一方;
Indeed, he broke away from both parties — I mean those professing the two energies, and those professing the one;
1:2001
這也是可憎的塞爾吉烏斯向他提議的,因為塞爾吉烏斯深知希拉克略在一切事上都容易動搖、隨人擺佈;
this the detestable Sergius also suggested to him, knowing him to be pliable in all things and easily led;
1:2002
and besides, fearing lest he should see him wholly torn away from their own faction, and for this reason permitting the emperor to act, in a rather clumsy manner, according to his own will.
1:2003
因此,希拉克略也如獲意外之財般欣喜,便藉由書面訓辭以及所謂的《敕令》,確立了這荒謬的教義;
Hence, indeed, Heraclius, delighting in what had happened as in an unexpected windfall, confirms the absurdity both by written formularies and by the so-called Edict;
1:2004
持守塞維魯思想的人,見到這訓辭如此白紙黑字寫下之後,不僅在家中私下彼此、更在酒館與浴場公開嘲笑,肆無忌憚地說道:「從前迦克墩派信奉聶斯多留的思想(他們如此稱呼我們,儘管我們其實早已否棄了聶斯多留的教義),如今總算清醒過來,不再執迷於謬見,藉由『一個運作』與我們合而為一,歸入基督的『一個本性』了;
which, when those who held the views of Severus saw it thus set down in writing, they cast mockeries at it, not only at home and among themselves, but even in taverns and public baths, uttering these things with unrestrained mouth: "Formerly the Chalcedonians, holding the views of Nestorius (so they called us, even though we had in fact rejected the teachings of that man), have now sobered up and abstained from thinking wrongly, having been united with us, through the one energy, into the one nature of Christ;
1:2005
but now, having condemned what was rightly held, they have lost both, confessing in Christ neither two natures nor one."
1:2006
當時教會中隨處可見混亂與騷動,因為無論牧者或百姓,無論統治者或被治者,皆陷入了愚妄;
One could then see confusion and turmoil in the Churches, because both shepherds and peoples had turned foolish, both rulers and the ruled;
1:2007
there being none who understood, nor any who sought after the Lord.
