1:1
To the servant of God, the lord George, the all-praiseworthy eparch of Africa.
1:2
無人如我所想,無論以何種方式被剝奪光明者,會如此渴望享受一線陽光,正如我們這些卑微之人眾人,曾豐盛地飽享閣下之美善高雅,如今又渴望再次得見閣下親臨在場,並享受閣下之美善風采;
No one deprived of light in whatever way desires, I think, to enjoy a ray of the sun so much as we, all of us humble ones, who have been richly filled with your goodness and nobility, desire again to behold you present, and to enjoy your beauty;
1:3
閣下以其與生俱來之美德的神聖風範為標誌,我們也因此深知閣下昔日居於此地時,即已卓然超群、氣度恢弘;
[you who are] marked by the divine manner of your connate virtues, by which also we know you formerly, when dwelling among us, to have been nobly and greatly distinguished;
1:4
藉此我們更清楚地被教導:德行乃屬於意念,而非屬於職銜;
by which we were taught more clearly that virtue belongs to disposition, and not to rank;
1:5
and that the God-imitating quality belongs to attitude, and not to dignity.
1:6
因為凡在靈魂深處如閣下般蒙福、且對天主之愛的力量已真實紮根者,毫無疑問,亦隨之獲得對善恆常如一之心;
For to those blessed ones such as yourselves, in whom the power of love toward God has been genuinely rooted in the depth of the soul, there has accrued also, without doubt, this: to remain constantly the same with regard to the good;
1:7
just as, indeed, to those who are fluttered by love for material things, there accrues a proneness easily to fall into a multitude of passions, and to be easily scattered.
1:8
For the lover of the Divine — since the Divine is one and alone, and impassible, and has, from eternity, absolutely nothing else of different essence contemplated together with it or additionally observed —
1:9
因為出於它者,無一能企及於它;
for none of the things that proceed from it attain to it;
1:10
clinging by disposition according to desire, he himself too is one, and alone, and impassible, by his unattached inclination toward the One,
1:11
There is also an indication of the page of the Patrologia, whenever the text derives from there.
1:12
having become one and alone, and unchangeable —
1:13
因為若他所渴慕者僅為獨一之物,而此物本身即嚴格意義上不變者,因其本性之無限而在本質上不可移動;
for if there is one and only thing desired by him, and this is, properly speaking, unchangeable, as being, on account of its natural infinity, immovable in essence;
1:14
因為那不動的無限者,無處可移;
for the immovable infinite has nowhere to be moved to;
1:15
因此,他既是那唯一者的愛慕者,理所當然地,他也已成為獨一、孤然、且不變者;
therefore he too, being as it were a lover of the One, has fittingly become one, and alone, and unchangeable;
1:16
since he has made his disposition entirely unmoved from the One.
1:17
然而,那因不知何為更善之事,而憑己意將靈魂之愛繫縛於物質之物者——此等物依其本性乃可變、易變,且絕無法安於一處——則必然成為可變、易受情動、且易於改變者;
But he who, through ignorance of the better, has bound the love of his soul, by his own disposition, to material things — which are by nature changeable and alterable, and able to stand still nowhere at all — is of necessity changeable, and passible, and easily altered;
1:18
having the disposition of his soul co-moved and made passible along with things that are by nature moved and made subject to passion.
1:19
故此,我蒙福的主上啊,願一切存在之物,皆不能使閣下偏離此善好且趨向天主之習性——此習性使閣下之意念與天主同行為伴;
May, therefore, nothing among existing things, O my blessed lord, be able to displace you from this good and God-directed habit of yours, which keeps your disposition as a fellow-traveler toward God;
1:20
願時間——它伴隨自身雜亂無序地變換物質事物之流轉——不致改變閣下意念之堅實;
may time — disorderly changing along with itself the flux of material things — not alter the firmness of your disposition;
1:21
願人之威嚇,縱以恐懼相加,亦不致動搖閣下美好意向之安定;
may not the threat of men, holding forth fear, dislodge the steadfastness of your good attitude;
1:22
願阿諛之人的言語,縱以其言辭甜蜜靈魂之聽聞,亦不致鬆弛其剛健之力;
may not the speech of flattering men, sweetening with its utterance the hearing of the soul, relax its vigor;
1:23
願報復之欲望——縱使閣下或有能力施諸於某人——亦不致全然敗壞閣下性情之溫和;
may not the desire for retaliation, arising from the possibility of perhaps [exercising it] against someone, altogether corrupt the gentleness of your character;
1:24
may not the desire for the glory of ruling diminish the longing of your love for the Divine.
1:25
因為不治理眾人,絕非在天主或世人面前有損於榮耀;
For not ruling over men is not at all a deficiency of glory before God or before men;
1:26
反倒是榮耀的增益,因靈魂得以免於一切外來之紛擾與各樣憂慮,如我所論;
but rather an increase of glory, in proportion as the soul is established free from every kind of external trouble and care, as my reasoning holds;
1:27
and everyone who piously discerns what is fitting will, I think, agree.
1:28
因為凡真正有德且愛天主之人,皆自足於自身,足以獲致一切幸福;
For every man who is truly virtuous and God-loving is self-sufficient unto himself for all happiness;
1:29
needing no external adornment at all in order to procure this [happiness].
1:30
因為凡使天主特質之顯現,在其一生中成為自身標記者,即完全擁有一切美善之豐盛;
For he who has made the manifestations of the divine properties, in his own life, into [his] marks of identification, possesses entirely the fullness of all good things;
1:31
藉此,人乃能自然而然地獲致與天主精確之相似;
through which it is naturally the case that exact assimilation to God comes to be present in men;
1:32
to which not even anything among things ranked after God, however great, when compared, can be set alongside.
1:33
And simply put: may neither sickness, nor health, nor wealth that drags one down, nor the poverty of perishable things, nor blame, nor praise, nor death, nor life, nor the present, nor the future, nor absolutely anything else among things that exist or come to be, be able to corrupt this philosophy that has nourished you and has advanced you to such renown before both God and men.
1:34
若我們將一切關乎自身之事,皆信託於天主;
If we should entrust to God all things concerning ourselves;
1:35
且完全不去尋求那些我們並未被吩咐當向天主尋求之事物;
and should altogether refrain from seeking anything of those things which we were not commanded to seek from God;
1:36
反倒竭盡全力尋求一切我們被吩咐當向天主尋求之事;
but should seek, with all diligence, everything that we were commanded to seek from God;
1:37
至於那些在天主以下、屬我們自身意念與能力範圍之事,願我們全然願意行之,並致力藉行為本身將其實現成形;
and as for those things which, after God, are under our own disposition and power, may we will them in every way, and strive to give them shape through the very deeds themselves;
1:38
至於那些無論如何皆不需我等意念參與其生成或消滅之事,願我等心懷感恩與信心,將之全然交託於天主,任憑祂隨己意願所導引,絕不與祂護理及治理之原則有所爭執;
but the things which, by every reckoning, do not require our consent for their coming to be or ceasing to be, may we yield entirely to God, with thanksgiving and faith, to guide wherever he wills and intends, in no way disputing at all against the principles of his providence and governance;
1:39
因這些事之全體,皆依天主之預知,以不可言喻之智慧,不可測知地被引向其自身之終局;
for which things the whole [course] is borne, unknowably, with ineffable wisdom, toward its own end, according to the foreknowledge of God;
1:40
even if, otherwise, and contrary to our hope, he should bring about the outcome of such matters.
1:41
For he is the most wise guardian and protector of our affairs, inasmuch as he has not acquired wisdom as something that befell him, but he himself, according to essence, both properly is and is called Wisdom.
1:42
讓我們願意真誠地只持守一件事:正如祂所言,要以全心、全靈魂、全力愛祂,並愛鄰如己;
Let us wish to keep genuinely one thing alone: to love him, as he said, with all our heart, and soul, and strength, and the neighbor as ourselves;
1:43
竭力設法以各種方式,將此神聖誡命付諸實現;
striving to devise every means to bring this divine commandment to fulfillment;
1:44
our aim being this: whatever dignity or rank, life and outward condition we may hold —
1:45
無論是治理者或受治理者,富足者或貧乏者,健康者或患病者,抑或身體處於任何其他狀態者;
whether rulers or ruled, both wealthy and poor, both healthy and sick, and however otherwise disposed in body;
1:46
and concerning the rest, as many things as by their nature do not at all follow upon our will, let us not be anxious about them in the least.
1:47
For what is it to us, that which is not established by nature out of necessity, or by disposition out of our own willing?
1:48
或許正因『道』願我們深思此事,故未曾藉神聖誡命就此賜下規定;
And it is perhaps because the Word wishes us to consider this, that it has not given us, through divine commandment, any ordinance concerning this;
1:49
免得我們藉由違反本性去嘗試那些不在我們能力範圍內之事,而應受責備地濫用意願之能力;
so that, by undertaking, contrary to nature, things that are not in our power, we might not blameworthily misuse the power of willing;
1:50
也免得我們將其顯為軟弱,彷彿它無法掌控那些絕不可能受其支配之事;
and lest we show it to be weak, as not possessing [power over] the things that can in no way be subject to it;
1:51
也免得我們對天主施以強逼,以為護理之治理乃屬於我們自己——而此護理,實乃智慧地運用那些不在我們能力範圍內之事,以懲戒那些在我們能力範圍內之惡;
nor do violence to God, by thinking that the governance of providence belongs to ourselves — [that providence] which wisely employs the things not in our power for the chastisement of the evils that are in our power;
1:52
but for the increase and vigorous course of the good things that are in our power.
1:53
but let us believe that these things are, together with divine providence, also an achievement of our own disposition, in accordance with our will.
1:54
In our power, therefore — that I may sum it up, as it were, in a single definition — is everything that is comprised under the category of virtue, or conversely under the mode of vice, and that follows, according to our will, upon our disposition.
1:55
而不在我們能力範圍之內者,則是凡其自身存在之締造者並非我們之抉擇者;
But not in our power is everything that does not have our free choice as the maker of its own existence;
1:56
凡按本性而存在之事物,皆無涉於德行與惡行;
and everything that exists by nature is free of both virtue and vice;
1:57
but by the use of those who possess it, it becomes this or that — or, to speak more properly, appears [as this or that].
1:58
因此,讓我們竭力願意,並極為重視,一切唯獨在我們能力範圍內之善事——因其乃我們與天主同工之抉擇的成果,且屬於我們意念之事;
Therefore let us will vehemently, and hold in great esteem, all the good things that are in our power alone, as being works of our free choice together with God, and being matters belonging to our disposition;
1:59
and thus we shall become obedient and well-reined colts of divine grace, receiving the Word mounted [upon us], who orders aright, in good sequence, our course of the virtues.
1:60
至於那些不在我們能力範圍內之事——因其本身按本性既非惡亦非德,而僅是抉擇之工具,將那在我們能力範圍內之原則的隱藏衝動帶入顯明——讓我們完全不去意願它們;
But as for the things not in our power — since they are not, in themselves, by nature, vice or virtue, but instruments of free choice, bringing into the open the hidden impulse of the principle that is in our power — let us not will them at all;
1:61
lest we corrupt, by misuse, the natural power of willing, [by] wishing to lay hold of things unmanageable, and things that cannot be accomplished by it.
1:62
反倒讓我們將這些事交託於天主,並以感恩之心接受一切時勢與事物之變遷——此變遷乃依天主之救贖旨意,為我們的益處而發生;
But let us entrust these things to God, and let us receive with thanksgiving every change of times and circumstances, occurring for our benefit according to the saving will of God;
1:63
so that the good of virtue may be accomplished for us not only through the same circumstances, but likewise also through different ones, and, through irregular circumstances, evenly.
1:64
For no one ever falls from good hope, who yields and entrusts to God the governance and providence — which rests with him — over the things that are not in his own power.
1:65
And true is the Sage, who said somewhere among his own words:
1:66
"Look at the ancient generations, and see: who trusted in the Lord, and was put to shame?
1:67
Or who called upon him, and he overlooked him?"
1:68
既然事情確是如此,如同這篇論述循真理而行、業已表明;
Since these things stand in this manner, as the discourse, running along with truth, has shown;
1:69
也已清楚地闡明可意願之事與不可意願之事各自之特性,以定義將彼此不可混淆之事物加以區分;
and has clearly set forth the distinctive property of the things willable and not-willable, having distinguished by definition the things that are not to be confused with one another;
1:70
let us not, then, when our office is taken away from us, contend for it, as though enduring the deprivation of some good.
1:71
For rule does not at all follow us simply because we will it, since it lies far from the domain of what is up to us.
1:72
just as neither wealth nor health do, nor any of those things lying in the middle ground that are shaped by us toward virtue or vice.
1:73
Nor again, on the other hand, when it is given, should we reject it altogether as something evil, since it can perhaps be an instrument of virtue for those who love God—
1:74
and for offering all things to God with all diligence, in addition to all that is in their power, as well as the things not in their power which are conceded to happen to them by dispensation—for those who have so purposed.
1:75
For without these things we can become, and be, and remain, good and virtuous. For that which is not, by its own nature, either good or evil, we cannot regard as either to be desired or to be avoided.
1:76
或全然喪失一切德行——〔無論何者,〕擁有這些東西對我們絕非在任何方面所必需;
or destitute of all virtue—the possession of these things is by no means necessary for us in any way whatsoever;
1:77
nor indeed is non-possession necessary for the generation and preservation of any good or evil.
1:78
因為確有人雖被剝奪權勢、財富與健康,卻積聚了永恆美善的許多寶藏;
Since indeed some, though deprived of power and wealth and health, acquired many treasures of eternal goods;
1:79
while others, on the contrary, though possessing power and wealth and health, have by their own disposition fallen away from all the divine goods.
1:80
Both the poor Lazarus and the rich man in his story bear witness to this.
1:81
前者被剝奪了一切屬物質的權勢、健康與富足,卻在亞伯拉罕懷中領受了蒙福的安息;
The former, deprived of all material power, health, and abundance, received the blessed rest in the bosom of Abraham;
1:82
while the latter, though abounding to the utmost in these material things, was kept away from the holy ones by the chasm, and was condemned to have the punishing fire as his portion.
1:83
因為這〔結局〕並非財富、健康與權勢的作為;
For it is not the work of wealth and health and power;
1:84
另一方面,德行也並非與此相對之境況的作為,以致它會轉變為相反的樣態、隨境遇而一同改變;
nor again, on the other hand, is virtue the work of the lot opposed to these, that it should undergo a change to the contrary, being altered together with circumstances;
1:85
but it is the work of a divine disposition, and of an intention wholly conformed to the good, fixed unchangeably according to God, and preserving its own unaltered sameness amid opposite circumstances.
1:86
And again, when it is taken away, let us not seek it, since we thereby lay down a great weight of dreadful burden, and since its removal reveals the purpose of Providence concerning us—Providence which benevolently administers what is beneficial for each.
1:87
智者說:『不要求作審判官,恐怕你沒有能力除去不義;
'Do not seek to become a judge,' says the Wise One, 'lest you be unable to remove injustices;
1:88
恐怕你在權貴面前心生畏懼,就在自己的正直上放下絆腳石;
lest you be overawed before the face of a powerful man, and thereby place a stumbling-block against your own uprightness;
1:89
and you sin against the multitude of the city, and cast yourself down among the crowd, and bind sin upon yourself twice over.'
1:90
Yet indeed, blessed one, even if you should wish to be judged by this standard too, you have fallen short of none among those of your rank.
1:91
For, as the same Wise One said, the eyes of the Lord looked upon you for good, and raised you up from your humiliation, and lifted up your head; and many marveled at you, and recount your virtues to peoples and nations.
1:92
Into all the earth has gone forth the sound of your right accomplishments, and to the ends of the inhabited world has come the fragrant diffusion of your virtues.
1:93
For you did not eat your bread alone, but generously shared it with orphans; and from their youth you reared them as a father, and from their mother's womb you guided them to righteousness.
1:94
你未曾對瀕臨滅亡的赤身者視而不見、置之不顧而不予以衣蔽;
You did not overlook the naked as they perished, without clothing them;
1:95
凡無力自助的人都祝福你;
and all the powerless blessed you;
1:96
for you warmed their shoulders with the wool from the shearing of your lambs.
1:97
你未曾將自己的黃金視同塵土,也就是未曾用以享受自己的肉體之樂;
You did not set your gold as your dust, that is, for the enjoyment of your flesh;
1:98
but you sent all your wealth ahead into heaven, for the preparation of the goods of the soul.
1:99
You were not deceived by perishable wealth, nor did you set your heart upon it as it flows away.
1:100
You did not associate with buffoons, whose life is shame and whose existence is filled with stains.
1:101
你的腳未曾急於行詭詐;
Your foot did not hasten toward deceit;
1:102
nor did you rejoice at the downfall of enemies, and your heart said—
1:103
地未曾因你而歎息;
The earth did not groan against you;
1:104
for you did not eat its strength alone without paying honor, nor did you oppress the souls of its owners.
1:105
你使自己的手遠離不義之饋贈;
You withheld your hands from unjust gifts;
1:106
你將窮人從強者手中救出,並為每一個無力自助者哭泣;
you rescued the poor from the hand of the powerful, and wept over every powerless person;
1:107
and seeing a man in distress, you groaned.
1:108
你幫助那些無人相助的孤兒;
You helped the orphans who had no helper;
1:109
and the mouths of widows blessed you.
1:110
You became eyes to the blind, and feet to the lame, and a father to the powerless.
1:111
簡而言之:你使饑餓的人得飽足,使乾渴的人得飲水,接待作客旅的人,給赤身的人穿衣,探望患病的人,並服事在監獄中的人;
And, to put it concisely, you feed the hungry, and give drink to the thirsty, and take in strangers, and clothe the naked, and visit the sick, and minister to those in prisons;
1:112
更確切地說,你藉這一切事討神的喜悅;
or rather, through all these things you are well-pleasing to God;
1:113
for whose sake you have judged it more glorious than all things to supply all these needs readily.
1:114
也就是說,誡命之律法藉著德行的實踐,在你身上向眾人燦然彰顯;
that is, the law of the commandments shines forth brilliantly upon you for all to see, through the practice of the virtues;
1:115
你也藉此光行走於黑暗之中;
and by its light you walk in darkness;
1:116
that is, by the knowledge of the pious contemplation of beings, you pass unharmed through the deceit and ignorance of this age, hastening toward the unshadowed light.
1:117
因為,蒙愛者啊,唯獨你,實在超乎眾人,才擁有這樣的〔恩賜〕:既不因權位之重而敗壞德行,也絕不使基督的律法在黃金面前有絲毫屈服;
For to you alone, beloved one, in truth, beyond all men, has it belonged neither to corrupt virtue by the weight of your rule, nor in any way to bow the law of Christ before gold;
1:118
反倒使你的權柄如此臣服於德行之下,以致——我要說——人單憑德行與理性便能認出你;
but so to have enslaved your authority to virtue, that you are known—I say—from virtue and reason alone;
1:119
and to have become renowned everywhere to all, on account of the glory of your righteousness.
1:120
但若我們如常情般迴避肉身的刻苦,卻以為可藉權勢為自己謀得肉身的安逸,我們就當知道:肉身的安逸乃是因違犯神的誡命而被發明、加諸人生的,是那寧取暫時之物而輕忽永恆之物的人所引入的;
But if, avoiding as is fitting the hardship of the flesh, we think to procure for ourselves its ease through our authority, let us know that the ease of the flesh was invented for human life by the transgression of the divine commandment, and was introduced by man who preferred temporal things to eternal ones;
1:121
而肉身的刻苦,卻是遵守神誡命的〔結果〕;神正是為此成為人,親自示範並訂立了此律;
whereas the hardship of the flesh is the effect of keeping the divine commandment; and God, having for this reason become man, both demonstrated and legislated it through himself;
1:122
並當知:前者〔安逸〕乃是人類被逐離樂園及其中美善之因;
and we should know that the one is the cause of mankind's estrangement from paradise and the goods that are there;
1:123
而後者〔刻苦〕則是〔人〕重返樂園、並升入諸天之因;
while the other is the cause of the return into paradise, and of the ascent into the heavens;
1:124
and, what is indeed the most wonderful of all, the procurer of intimate kinship with God.
1:125
因此,我們務要完全持守肉身的刻苦,視之為神聖恩典的工具,不因時勢與境遇而隨之改易;
And for this reason, let us hold fast entirely to bodily hardship, as being an instrument of divine grace, not changing along with times and circumstances;
1:126
至於肉身的安逸,我們則當完全置之不理,視之為當唾棄之物,且必終將消解、承受其自身之命運,並不逾越其自身的界限,正如基督那神聖的口——貴格利——所言;
while let us utterly disregard the ease of the flesh, as something detestable, and as something that will altogether be dissolved, and will suffer its own fate, and does not overstep its own limits, as the divine mouth of Christ, Gregory, said;
1:127
且視之為一切靈魂創傷的製造者;
and as productive of all the wounds of the soul;
1:128
so that we may become wholly God's, and God's alone, flashing forth the divine rays through all the movements, both of soul and of body—
1:129
簡而言之,使我們得以能容納那完整的神,並全然地、徹頭徹尾地依恩典成為神;
and, simply put, may become capable of containing the whole God, and become wholly, throughout, gods by grace;
1:130
to such a degree that we might be reckoned, in every respect, to be another instance of him himself—
1:131
唯獨在依本質而有的同一性上有別於祂;
apart from identity with him according to essence;
1:132
因為這正是成全:在我們自身之內,全然不帶這世代的任何印記;
for this is perfection: bearing in ourselves no mark whatsoever of this age;
1:133
lest on account of that mark some deprivation of the divine condition come upon us in any way, and we grieve bitterly over the blemish of our true completeness—
1:134
and yet find no means of correction any longer.
1:135
When this age of our deeds has passed away from us, nothing of present things remains at all as it now is, in form and condition; nothing of the things that are seen offers reliability or freedom from falling to those who possess them.
1:136
沒有任何事物能持久穩固,為那被它所征服的人恆然不動地存留;
Nothing stands firm and durable, remaining unmoved for those who are conquered by it;
1:137
無論榮耀、財富、權勢、健康,無論恥辱、貧窮、奴役、疾病,無論美貌、青春、顯赫,無論醜陋、老邁、卑微的出身,〔皆是如此〕;
not glory, not wealth, not power, not health, not disgrace, not poverty, not slavery, not sickness, not beauty, not youth, not distinction, not deformity, not old age, not lowly birth;
1:138
all things pass away, all things wither, all human things vanish like a shadow, and every mass of human eminence is more easily dissipated than a bubble.
1:139
因為經上說:凡人盡都如草,人的一切榮耀好像草上的花;
For, it says, every man is grass, and all the glory of man is like the flower of grass;
1:140
the grass withered, and the flower fell.
1:141
因為誠然,一切人間之事,皆按潛能(潛在地)將敗壞與生成聯結在一起;
For truly all human things have, according to potentiality, corruption bound together with generation;
1:142
而且在某些情況中,敗壞甚至先於生成;
and often, in some cases, corruption even precedes generation;
1:143
並且是透過此二者而被觀察到的;
and it is observed through both;
1:144
and this Providence wisely contrives, so that the principle of things subject to alteration may become, for the confirmation of things eternal, a pedagogy.
1:145
萬物彼此互變,各自為對方所轉易;
All things change into one another, and each is overturned by each;
1:146
and through one another they ratify their own corruption rather than their generation.
1:147
所以,讓我們不要將那不朽壞的靈魂,捆綁於暫時之事物;
Let us not, therefore, bind the incorruptible soul to things temporal;
1:148
nor let us weigh down the mind, dragging it down to earth by anxious care for material things, since it is by nature free from matter.
1:149
讓我們憑理性(道),按其本性,將那些在本質上永不相合的事物彼此區分開來;
Let us, by reason, naturally distinguish from one another those things that never coincide with one another in essence;
1:150
and it is no toil at all for us to draw the soul — which is incomposite and can in no way admit dissolution of nature — away from attachment to the things that are perishing.
1:151
the error of the senses concerning sensible things —
1:152
我是說,也包括混亂——好使我們得以逃避那焚燒之火;
I mean also confusion — so that we may flee the conflagration;
1:153
the punishment which, I say, in every case follows upon these things by fire.
1:154
讓我們得救而奔往那山——亦即奔向合乎神之生活方式的高處——免得我們與之一同被擄去,我們這些尚未完全脫離感官的人,縱然我們似乎像蒙福的羅得那樣,因不與所多瑪人同工類似之惡事,而顯得在惡事上是閒懶的;
Let us be saved unto the mountain — that is, unto the height of citizenship according to God — lest we be swept away together with them, we who have not yet been wholly removed from the senses, even though, like the blessed Lot, we may seem to be idle from evil, by not working together with the Sodomites in the like things;
1:155
that is, with the passions that come through the senses — the things suited to the passions.
1:156
讓我們盡力越過那些流逝的事物——那些絕不可能被我們所把持的事物,因為牠們的存在(實存)本身,其本性即是短暫的流變;
Let us, as far as possible, run past the things that pass away, things which can in no way be held by us, having as their very nature a transient flux for their subsistence;
1:157
but there springs up for us only the evilly branded disposition of the soul with regard to them, on account of which every torment is destined to be stretched out against the condemned.
1:158
Let us readily give up all things, or let us make prior use of them for God through those in need — things whose deprivation naturally attends us by necessity.
1:159
Let us, by deliberate resolve, willingly relinquish those things which, by nature, of necessity, both release us and are released by us.
1:160
讓我們不要藉著不理性的依戀,使那按本性映現其造物主形像的靈魂,成為生滅之物的俘虜;
Let us not, through irrational attachment, make the soul — which by nature images its own Maker — captive to the things that come into being and pass away;
1:161
the soul which, after it has come into being, never receives an end of its existence, and is appointed always to seek God through all things, and to press on toward him.
1:162
讓我們不要願意擁有那些我們無法持守的東西;
Let us not wish to have what we are not able to hold;
1:163
nor indeed let us be attached to things that altogether pass away, as though they were eternal.
1:164
For the form of this age passes away, as the Saint has said:
1:165
「天地都要過去」,正如那聖者的神所說的;
"Heaven and earth will pass away," as the God of the Saint has said;
1:166
and let us receive the divine pronouncement without falsehood, and let us attain, by faith, the power of the word, and let us be assured, through clear demonstration, of the outcome of the things spoken.
1:167
因為凡其部分皆服於敗壞與變易者——如我們的一位智者所言——顯然其整體亦然,儘管『整體將被消融』之時刻,尚未在實際運作中臨到;
For that whose parts are subject to corruptions and alterations — as one of our wise men said — of this the whole too is, clearly, [subject to the same], even though the time has not yet, in actual fact, arrived, in which these things, the whole, will be dissolved;
1:168
since indeed every man, from the things he suffers each day, naturally knows that he will die, even though death is not yet present through actual events.
1:169
所以,讓我們歸屬於自己、並歸屬於神;
Let us, therefore, belong to ourselves, and to God;
1:170
or rather, to God alone, and not at all to the flesh and the world.
1:171
Let us be prepared to call upon our God, according to what is written:
1:172
「以色列啊,你當預備自己,好呼求你的神」;
"Prepare, O Israel, to call upon your God";
1:173
that is, let us be cleansed of evil stains and defilements, casting off from ourselves, as far as possible, even the bare fantasies of the passions.
1:174
因為凡願意妥善預備自己的人,唯有如此才是真正的預備;
For thus, truly, is everyone prepared who wishes to be well prepared;
1:175
so that we may receive, through the virtues, as through certain divine colors, the exact assimilation to God.
1:176
因為如此呼求,方是那不無知於『當如何呼求神』之人合宜的呼求;
For thus does he rightly call upon God, who is not ignorant of how one ought to call upon God;
1:177
因為,依我之見,所謂『預備』,乃是與諸情的疏離;
for preparation is, to speak according to my own understanding, estrangement from the passions;
1:178
and invocation is the genuine appropriation to God through the virtues.
1:179
或者又可以說,『預備』乃是藉諸美德在配得者身上生成的光輝;
Or again, preparation is the brightness that comes to be, through the virtues, in those who are worthy;
1:180
and invocation is the reception, through true knowledge, of the deifying grace.
1:181
For thus we shall be able always to have our garments white, according to what is written:
1:182
亦即:藉諸美德而有光明潔淨的品行;
that is, ways of life that are bright through the virtues;
1:183
possessing no evidence of darkness.
1:184
我們的靈魂必因神我們的救主而歡欣;
And our soul shall exult in God our Savior;
1:185
既因脫去那按迷惑之私慾而敗壞的舊人而歡喜;
rejoicing both in the putting off of the old man, who is corrupted according to the desires of deceit;
1:186
and in the putting on of the temple that is created according to God in the Spirit.
1:187
因為我們的神必為我們穿上救恩的衣袍,並歡樂的裡衣;
For our God will clothe us with a garment of salvation, and a tunic of gladness;
1:188
that is, the habitual philosophical practice, according to character, through the virtues, and the unstumbling gnostic contemplation in the Spirit, so that we may also enjoy the primal goods of the future, divine and undefiled bridal chamber.
1:189
就這一切事,讓我們仔細省察自己如何行事為人,並思量自己所籌謀之事;
In all these things, let us carefully consider how we walk, and what we deliberate concerning ourselves;
1:190
因我們知道,有許多看不見的見證者,臨在於我們所行之事,他們並非只看那表面顯現之事,而是俯察靈魂本身,徹底查驗心中隱藏之事;
knowing that many invisible witnesses stand by at the things done by us, not looking only at what appears, but peering into the very souls, and thoroughly examining the hidden things of the heart;
1:191
那時,一切可見受造之物將被震動,以無可言喻的急迫被推向其自身的終結;
when all the creation of visible things, being shaken, is driven with unspeakable haste toward its own consummation;
1:192
天地都要在轟然巨響中消逝;
and heaven and earth shall pass away with a rushing roar;
1:193
而其間的元素將被烈火焚燒而消融;
and the elements in between, being set ablaze, shall be dissolved;
1:194
and there shall be a new heaven and a new earth, and the things that follow upon these.
1:195
那時,眾寶座將被安設,亙古常在者居首而坐,眾書卷也將展開,其中忠實而未經竄改地記載著我們的行為、言語與思念;
When thrones are set forth, and the Ancient of Days sits enthroned before them, and books are opened, containing the faithful and unfalsified records of our deeds and words and thoughts;
1:196
千千天使事奉祂,萬萬天使侍立在祂面前;
and thousand thousands of angels minister to him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stand before him;
1:197
並且有可畏的威嚇——熾燃(燃燒)之火四處奔流,包圍四周一切,使群山如蠟熔化;
and a fearful threat of blazing (burning) fire running everywhere, and encompassing all things round about, and melting the mountains like wax;
1:198
"For a river of fire," it says, "was flowing forth before him."
1:199
那時,地獄深淵、浩瀚無底且無可比擬的深坑、外面的黑暗、以及不眠的蟲,都將顯現臨在;
When Tartarus, and the vast and immeasurable pit, and the outer darkness, and the sleepless worm shall be manifested as present;
1:200
而面對這一切,恐懼便懸立於一切等候此結局之人中間;
and upon these things fear stood suspended throughout all who were awaiting the outcome;
1:201
and angels of wrath, gleaming with punitive fire, seeing fire, and breathing fire, stand ready for every vengeance against every transgression.
1:202
此外,一切受造之物,無論在地上或在天上——凡在天使中者、在高於天使的諸權能中者、以及在世人中者——皆戰慄侍立,等候著神聖旨意那可畏的顯現;
And in addition to these, all creation, both earthly and heavenly — as much as is among the angels, and the powers above the angels, and as much as is among men — stands by with trembling, awaiting the fearful manifestation of the divine counsel;
1:203
就在這一切面前,我們眾人的行為都將被宣讀出來,一切隱藏之事也都將被揭露;
before all of whom the deeds of us all shall be read out, and the exposure of hidden things shall take place;
1:204
so that all shall know one another's sins just as each one knows his own, reading without error the book of his own conscience.
1:205
"For I will reprove you," he says, "and I will set your sins before your face."
1:206
"Their own devices shall encompass them."
1:207
看哪,這人和他的行為;而那不受矇騙、不受詭辯的審判者,帶著天上諸品位那可畏而莊嚴的權能侍立左右,高高在上端坐,光芒四射地閃耀著全然的公義,並藉真實公正的判決,將各人所應得的分予各人;
And behold, man and his work; and the judge who admits no false reckoning, having present with him the fearful and magnificent power of the heavenly ranks, sits enthroned on high, flashing forth all righteousness, and, by a true and just sentence, apportioning to each what is according to his worth;
1:208
對那些因善行而立於右邊的人,祂溫和仁慈地賜下那從創世以來便已預備好的天國;
to those, on the one hand, who stand at his right hand on account of their good deeds, graciously giving the kingdom of the heavens prepared from the foundation of the world;
1:209
but those who, because of the barrenness of good works, have obtained a standing on the left, he thrusts away with wrath into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
1:210
Who shall endure that raging fire?
1:211
Who will not be terrified at the strange spectacle of that worm?
1:212
Who will be able to bear the swiftness and, together with it, the heaviness of that outer darkness?
1:213
Who will withstand Tartarus bellowing, and the abyss seething up together with it from its depths?
1:214
Who, being shaken, does not tremble before the sharp and grim glance of angels, and the downcast aspect of their countenance?
1:215
Who will not fear the most terrible of all evils — the turning-away of the face of God, who is by nature gentle, loving to mankind, and compassionate — with whom all creation joins in turning away from, and in abhorring, those who through a quarrelsome mind have impaled themselves upon so many evils, being justly indignant against them, since it is they themselves who have compelled the God who is by nature and alone loving to mankind to appear to them as such?
1:216
Who will endure the boundless shame of conscience that is to come at the disclosure of hidden things?
1:217
Who will be able to gauge the unceasing wailing, and that bitter and senseless tear, and the gnashing of teeth, and the wailing-cries of those oppressed in torments — or the pain of remorse that lies upon the very midst of their heart, and justly smolders the depth of their soul?
1:218
Who is able to declare the anguish that arises in them from not hoping for any appointed term of change, or an end to the punishment that lies upon them, nor awaiting any expectation of a return again to living well?
1:219
因為那是最後且唯一的〔審判〕,那確實是既可畏又公義的法庭;其公義甚於其可畏,而或許正因如此更加可畏,因為它也是公義的;
For that is the last and only judgment, and it is truly a fearful and just tribunal, and more just than it is fearful — and perhaps for this very reason more fearful, because it is also just;
1:220
and enclosing within itself all the ages, according to the just verdict of God.
1:221
Who, having considered the moanings and groans that are brought forth from the very midst of their heart, and that seize upon their marrow, and bitterly gnaw at their inward parts, will be able to remain free of tears?
1:222
Who could bear the lamentation and the wailing without pain and the dejection that attends it, and without pain at the words of remorse with which they are uttered — each of those being punished speaking to himself, and all speaking to all?
1:223
For then does each one truly become a knower of his own faults, when the realities appear bare before him, and free of every veil of deceit.
1:224
因為你曾呼喚我們,我們卻不聽從你;
For you were calling us, and we would not obey you;
1:225
你曾賜給我們言語,我們卻不加留意,反倒使你的旨意歸於無效;
you offered us words, and we paid no heed, but made your counsels void;
1:226
and we did not attend to your words.
1:227
因此,滅亡、毀滅、暴風、患難與圍困便公義地臨到我們身上;
Therefore destruction has justly come upon us, and ruin, and tempest, and affliction, and siege;
1:228
如今我們呼求你,你卻不垂聽;
and now we call upon you, and you do not listen;
1:229
我們向你尋求,卻尋不著憐憫;
we seek from you, and we do not find mercy;
1:230
因為我們自己也未曾聽從你的話語;
for neither did we ourselves listen to your words;
1:231
nor did we show mercy to our neighbor.
1:232
For having hated wisdom, and not having chosen the fear of the Lord, nor having willed to heed the counsels of God, we reap such fruits of our own seeds, and are filled with our own folly.
1:233
因為今生的欺妄使我們盲目,以致我們不認識天主的奧祕;
For the deceit of this life blinded us, and we did not know the mysteries of God;
1:234
nor did we hope at all that there would be a reward for holiness.
1:235
And now, what has arrogance profited us, and what has wealth together with boastfulness contributed to us?
1:236
這一切都已如影消逝,如飛馳而過的音信,又如船隻駛過波濤洶湧的水面;
All those things have passed away like a shadow, and like a message running past, and like a ship passing through the surging water;
