[...]us. Tome I: Minor Theological and Polemical Writings, to Marinus the Most Holy Presbyter. Having set for yourself the aim of attaining that friendship with God which is praised in every hymn, O God-honored Father, you run the course toward it in good order,
1:2
以理性(λόγος)界定萬有之本性,為要生發德行;又以心智(νοῦς)限定一切永世與時間之運動,為要成就那無誤之聯合(知識);
circumscribing by reason the nature of beings for the generation of virtue, and by intellect limiting the motion of every age and time for the establishment of unerring union (knowledge);
1:3
藉此,對神更為熾熱的渴慕便隨之而入;
by which a more fervent longing for God enters in along with them;
1:4
使你渴慕之運動,與那無限者同延並進;
extending the motion of your longing coextensively with infinity;
1:5
並因所渴慕者之不可理解,使你的渴望亦成為不可理解;
and, by the incomprehensibility of the one longed for, making your desire incomprehensible;
1:6
此渴望之終末,即神自身;
of which longing God Himself is the end;
1:7
祂於配得者身上成為渴慕之滿全,猶如諸善之自立所是的享受;
becoming, for the worthy, the fulfillment of longing, as the self-subsistent enjoyment of good things;
1:8
of which reason knows experience alone as comprehension, since it is, clearly, above intellection — a union that in no way whatsoever falls under any intellectual form.
1:9
而生命之本性,則屬乎理性;
and the nature of life is, [in turn], reason;
1:10
真實地描繪出那按照基督而有的新人;
truly delineating the new man according to Christ;
1:11
以易於效法之方式,承載那創造者神的形像與樣式;
bearing, in a way readily imitable, the image and likeness of God the Creator;
1:12
此形像與樣式,此刻當理解為真理與良善;
which [image and likeness] one must now understand as truth and goodness;
1:13
前者(真理)為默觀之終末,後者(良善)為實踐之終末;
the one being the end of contemplation, the other the end of practice;
1:14
and the one the adversary of falsehood, the other of wickedness.
1:15
由此,隨著你在德行上的有成,對神聖教義的領悟也隨之與你相連;
Hence, together with your successful accomplishment of the virtues, the comprehension of the divine dogmas has been joined to you;
1:16
並由知識之豐富與論證之能力所維繫;
held together by the abundance of knowledge and by the power of demonstration;
1:17
[Editorial note, not part of the text: there is likewise an indication of the Patrologia page number (marked by ==) whenever the text derives from there.]
1:18
你已辨明並摒棄了那有關「諸意志」所提出的主張——即那些人所言:意志、願欲、謀慮、抉擇、意念,彼此皆屬同一;
having discerned what had been proposed concerning the wills, and having rejected it — [the claim] of those who say that will and wish and counsel and choice and gnome are all identical with one another;
1:19
以及自主權、意見與明智——彼此僅在名稱上有別;
and likewise authority, and opinion, and prudence — differing from one another only in name;
1:20
並主張神與聖徒將成為同一個意志;
and that there will come to be one will of God and of the saints;
1:21
並因此堅稱且極力主張基督只有一個出於抉擇的意志;
and on this account affirming and insisting that Christ has a single will of deliberate choice;
1:22
你並不以自己為滿足,來確認那已被正確判斷之事,這是出於你那與生俱來的心靈貧乏(謙卑);
you were not content with yourself alone for the confirmation of what had been rightly judged, on account of your innate poverty of spirit;
1:23
but you deemed me also worthy — though I was reared in a plain, unlearned condition — to be taken as one concurring in what you had rightly come to know,
1:24
and I, overcome as I am by the reward of ready obedience,
1:25
便要按次序,就這些事項逐一撰寫簡明且近乎定義性的文字;
shall make, of each of these matters in order, a brief and, as it were, definitive account;
1:26
並非鐫刻我自己的言論;
not inscribing words of my own;
1:27
因為我這方面何等貧乏,豈能有此能力?而是採集他人就此辛勞所得之言論,如同拾穗一般;
for how could I, who am destitute of these things — but rather gathering as gleanings the words labored over by others concerning these matters;
1:28
these things differ from one another —
1:29
I mean, both in name and in reality.
1:30
論本性之意志,亦即意願。因為本性之意志,亦即意願,乃是對那依乎本性而存在者具有欲求能力的一種官能;
ON THE NATURAL WILL, THAT IS, THE ACT OF WILLING. For the natural will, that is, the act of willing, is a faculty appetitive of that which exists according to nature;
1:31
and one that holds together all the properties that essentially belong to the nature.
1:32
For essence, being naturally held together by this [faculty], desires to be, and to live, and to move according to sense and intellect, longing for its own natural and complete beingness.
1:33
因為本性乃是被構成為意願其自身、以及一切依其本性而構成其存在之諸事的官能;
For nature has been constituted as one that wills itself, and all things which by nature serve to constitute it;
1:34
being appetitively attached to the principle of its own being, according to which it exists and has come to be.
1:35
他們說,意志乃是一種理性且賦有生命的欲求;
They say that will is a rational and vital appetite;
1:36
and that deliberate choice is a deliberative appetite for the things that are in our power.
1:37
由此可知,意願並非抉擇;
The act of willing, therefore, is not deliberate choice;
1:38
since the act of willing is a certain simple appetite, rational and vital,
1:39
whereas deliberate choice is a conjunction of appetite, counsel, and judgment.
1:40
因為我們先有欲求,然後才加以謀慮;
For first we desire, then we deliberate;
1:41
既經謀慮,便加以判斷;
and having deliberated, we judge;
1:42
and having judged, we choose the better, as shown by the judgment, over the worse.
1:43
其中,意願僅繫於本性之事;
and the one [the act of willing] depends only on things natural;
1:44
whereas the other [deliberate choice] depends only on things that are in our power and that can come to be through us.
1:45
Deliberate choice, therefore, is not the act of willing.
1:46
ON WISH. But neither is deliberate choice wish.
1:47
因為願欲乃是一種對於在我們能力範圍之內、與不在我們能力範圍之內的事物,皆懷有的想像式欲求;
For wish is a notional appetite for things both in our power and not in our power;
1:48
that is, one formed by discursive thought alone.
1:49
而此想像式的欲求,僅屬於推理的能力,並不涉及那對於在我們能力範圍內之事所作的、經謀慮的理性;
And the notional appetite belongs to the discursive faculty alone, without the deliberative reason concerning the things in our power;
1:50
whereas deliberate choice is a deliberative appetite for the practicable things that are in our power.
1:51
如此,僅憑此定義性的陳述,既已顯明這些概念之間的差異,本應足以止息那些徒逞口舌之辯者的爭競;
The statement of this definition alone, then, having shown the difference between these, would suffice to stop the contentiousness of those who argue to excess;
1:52
and [to stop] those who — I know not how to say it with due courtesy — plainly contradict what has been rightly known.
1:53
But since those eager to learn desire, in some measure, to attend to the matters sought through a fuller treatment, we shall speak of it also in another way.
1:54
Those who have made distinctions concerning these matters say:
1:55
It is not the case that, for all things to which choosing is fitting, wishing is also altogether fitting.
1:56
因為我們說,我們願欲健康、願欲富足、也願欲得享不朽;
For we say that we wish to be healthy, and to be rich, and to be made immortal;
1:57
但我們卻不說,我們是抉擇要富足、要健康、要得享不朽;
but we do not say that we choose to be rich, and to be healthy, and to be made immortal;
1:58
因為願欲既涉及可能之事,也涉及不可能之事;
since wish concerns both things possible and things impossible;
1:59
whereas deliberate choice concerns only things possible, and things that can come to be through us.
1:60
此外,願欲乃是關乎目的(終末);
And again, wish pertains to the end;
1:61
whereas deliberate choice pertains to the things that lead to the end.
1:62
故此,他們說,所願欲之事即是目的;
They say, then, that the object of wish is the end;
1:63
而所謀慮之事,則是通向目的之途徑;
and that the object of deliberation is that which leads to the end;
1:64
for example, the means to health.
1:65
故此,他們說,願欲之於抉擇,正如所願欲之事之於所謀慮之事,二者具有相同的比例關係;
The same proportion, then, which the object of wish has to the object of deliberation, wish is said to have to deliberate choice;
1:66
since we choose only those things which we think can come to be through us.
1:67
But we wish also for things that cannot come to be through us.
1:68
And it will be shown, moreover, that deliberate choice is not deliberation, that is, counsel, either.
1:69
ON COUNSEL, THAT IS, DELIBERATION. They say that counsel, that is, deliberation, is an inquiring appetite arising concerning some practicable thing among those that are in our power.
1:70
And the object of choice is that which has been judged as a result of counsel.
1:71
But choice concerns the things already preferred by judgment.
1:72
And this is clear not from the definition alone, but also from the etymology.
1:73
For that which is an object of choice is that which is chosen in preference to another.
1:74
然而,沒有人不經商議便判定何者優先;
But no one prefers a thing without having first deliberated;
1:75
Choice, therefore, is not deliberation, that is, the act of deliberating.
1:76
ON CHOICE. They say that choice is a deliberative desire for the practicable things that are in our power.
1:77
因為抉擇是某種混合之物,且由多項要素調和而成;
For choice is something mixed, and compounded of many elements;
1:78
composed of desire, deliberation, and judgment.
1:79
因為這些要素若各自單獨來看,任何一個都不能構成抉擇;
For choice does not consist in any one of these considered by itself;
1:80
它既非單獨的欲求本身,也非單獨的商議,也非單獨的判斷;
for it is neither desire alone by itself, nor deliberation alone, nor judgment alone;
1:81
but it is compounded of these, just as man, as we know him, is composed of soul and body.
1:82
For it is then that choice comes to be, and the thing preferred through deliberation—the very thing that choice concerns—becomes an object of choice, when it takes on desire.
1:83
Necessarily, then, choice concerns, after judgment, the very things that deliberation concerned before judgment.
1:84
For those things we choose are the very things concerning which we deliberate.
1:85
論我們商議何事。我們所商議的,是那些在我們掌控之內、且能藉由我們而成就的事;
CONCERNING WHAT THINGS WE DELIBERATE. We deliberate about the things that are in our power and can come to be through us;
1:86
and that have an uncertain outcome.
1:87
之所以說『在我們掌控之內』,是因為我們僅就可行之事而商議;
Now 'in our power' is stated, since we deliberate only concerning practicable things;
1:88
for we do not deliberate concerning self-subsistent wisdom.
1:89
因為我們既不就神而商議,也不就那些出於必然、且總是以同一方式發生的事而商議;
For we deliberate neither concerning God, nor concerning the things that happen of necessity and always in the same way;
1:90
例如時序的循環運行;
such as the cyclical motion of the seasons;
1:91
也不就那些並非常存、卻總是以相同方式發生的事而商議,例如日出與日落;
nor concerning the things that do not always exist, but that always come to pass in the same manner, such as the rising and setting of the sun;
1:92
也不就那些出於本性、卻並非總是以相同方式發生、而只是多半如此的事而商議;
nor concerning the things that occur by nature, yet not always in the same manner, but for the most part;
1:93
例如六十歲的人會白髮,或二十歲的人會長鬍鬚;
such as a sixty-year-old man turning grey, or a twenty-year-old growing a beard;
1:94
也不就那些出於本性、卻無定準、時而如此時而如彼發生的事而商議;
nor concerning the things that occur by nature, but indeterminately, now in one way, now in another;
1:95
such as rains, droughts, and hail.
1:96
因為我們既非就一切人(一切人事)而商議,也非就每一件事而商議;
since indeed we do not deliberate concerning all men (all human affairs), nor concerning every matter;
1:97
甚至也不是就一切在我們掌控之內、且藉由我們而成就的事而商議;
nay, not even concerning all the things that are in our power and come to be through us;
1:98
but it is necessary also to add: 'and that have an uncertain outcome.'
1:99
因為若一件事是顯而易見、眾所公認的,我們便不再就它商議;
For if a thing is manifest and agreed upon, we no longer deliberate concerning it;
1:100
even though it is in our power, and comes to be through us.
1:101
It has also been shown that deliberation concerns not the end, but the things that lead to the end.
1:102
因為我們並非就『要致富』這件事本身而商議;
For we do not deliberate to become rich as such;
1:103
but how, and by what means, we shall become rich.
1:104
簡而言之,我們只就那些其實行同樣可能發生、也同樣可能不發生的事而商議;
And, to speak concisely, we deliberate only concerning those things whose performance is equally possible either way;
1:105
and that is equally possible which we are able both to do, and also its opposite.
1:106
但若在兩個相反之事中,我們只能做其中一件,那麼這一件便是無可置疑、眾所公認的;
But if we were able to do only one of two opposites, this one would be agreed upon as beyond doubt;
1:107
while the opposite would be impossible.
1:108
例如,當麵包與石頭擺在眼前時,沒有人會商議該以哪一樣作為食物;
For instance, when bread and a stone are set before someone, no one deliberates as to which of the two he will make his food;
1:109
the latter being clearly impossible.
1:110
These, then, are the things we choose—the things equally possible, concerning which we also deliberate.
1:111
論意念。然而,抉擇也不等同於意念,儘管多數人輕率地如此以為;
ON GNOME. But choice is not the same as gnome, even though most people readily suppose this;
1:112
因為他們說,意念乃是對那些在我們掌控之內的事、一種內存的欲求,抉擇即由此而生;
since indeed they say that gnome is an inherent desire for the things in our power, out of which choice arises;
1:113
or a disposition toward the things in our power that have been deliberated with desire.
1:114
after which—or, more properly speaking, out of which—choice arises.
1:115
Gnome, then, stands in the same relation to choice as habit stands to operation.
1:116
ON POWER. But choice is not power either.
1:117
因為抉擇,如我屢次所言,乃是對那些在我們掌控之內、可行之事的一種商議性的欲求;
For choice, as I have often said, is a deliberative desire for the practicable things in our power;
1:118
而權能,則是對那些在我們掌控之內、可行之事的一種合法的主權;
whereas power is a lawful mastery over the practicable things in our power;
1:119
或者說,是對那些在我們掌控之內之事的運用,一種不受阻礙的主權;
or an unhindered mastery over the use of the things in our power;
1:120
or an unenslaved desire for the things in our power.
1:121
所以,權能與抉擇並不是同一回事;
Power, then, and choice are not the same;
1:122
因為我們正是憑藉權能而作出抉擇;
since indeed it is by power that we choose;
1:123
然而我們卻不是憑藉抉擇而運用權能;
but it is not by choice that we exercise power;
1:124
其中一者,也就是抉擇,僅僅是被揀選出來的;
and the one, choice, is only selected;
1:125
whereas the other, power, makes use of the things in our power, and of the things concerned with the things in our power, that is, of choice, judgment, and deliberation.
1:126
For it is by power that we deliberate, and judge, and choose, and are set in motion, and make use of the things in our power.
1:127
他們說,非理性的意見,是一種單純而現成的知識;
Now they say that irrational opinion is a simple and ready-at-hand knowledge;
1:128
as when someone puts forward an opinion belonging to another, without knowing its cause.
1:129
For instance, saying that the soul is immortal, without giving a demonstrative cause of its immortality.
1:130
但他們說,理性的意見,是藉由推論思維的完成而構成的知識;
But rational opinion, they say, is knowledge constituted through the completion of discursive reasoning;
1:131
as when someone, having reasoned through something, also renders its cause with scientific demonstration.
1:132
For example, someone proposes to demonstrate that the soul is immortal, and says:
1:133
既然靈魂是自我運動的;
Since the soul is self-moved;
1:134
而自我運動者,是恆常運動的;
and the self-moved is ever-moving;
1:135
而恆常運動者,是不朽的;
and the ever-moving is immortal;
1:136
既然靈魂是不合成的;
Since the soul is incomposite;
1:137
而不合成者,是不能被分解的;
and the incomposite is indissoluble;
1:138
而不能被分解者,是不朽的;
and the indissoluble is immortal;
1:139
and he proceeds from the premises, through the syllogisms, to the conclusions, and thus produces rational opinion.
1:140
再者,意見所涉及的,不僅是那些在我們掌控之內的事,也包括那些不在我們掌控之內的事;
And again, opinion concerns not only the things in our power, but also the things not in our power;
1:141
但抉擇僅關乎那些在我們能力範圍內的事;
But choice concerns only the things that are up to us;
1:142
而我們稱意見有真有假;
And we call opinion both true and false;
1:143
但抉擇,我們不稱之為真或假;
but choice we do not call true or false;
1:144
意見關乎普遍之事;
and opinion concerns universals;
1:145
抉擇則關乎個別之事;
but choice concerns particulars;
1:146
因為抉擇是關於可行之事的;
for choice concerns things that can be done;
1:147
因為,若意見是由推理思維的完成所構成,乃是一種知識;
For if opinion, being constituted by the completion of discursive thought, is knowledge;
1:148
while choice is a deliberative desire for the things that can be done and are up to us, choice is not the same as opinion.
1:149
CONCERNING DISPOSITION, THAT IS, PRUDENCE. But neither is choice the same as disposition, that is, prudence,
1:150
倘若他們確實稱明智為對理性與知識性學問的靜觀之欲求;
if indeed they call prudence a contemplative desire for rational and cognitive branches of learning;
1:151
或稱之為一種既與無知相對、又與過度用智相對的品性;
or a state that stands opposed to both mindlessness and to excess of intellection;
1:152
whereas choice, as the reasoned account has variously set forth, is a deliberative desire for the things that are up to us.
1:153
And they say that prudence comes about in the following manner:
1:154
對某事物的思維,他們稱之為概念;
the intellection concerning something they call a notion;
1:155
而這概念,若持續存留並在靈魂上就所思之事留下印記,便稱為沉思;
and this notion, when it persists and imprints the soul with respect to the thing being thought, is called reflection;
1:156
而沉思,若停駐於同一事物並反覆審視自身,便稱為明智;
and reflection, when it remains fixed upon the same thing and scrutinizes itself, is named prudence;
1:157
and prudence, when it is broadened, produces reasoning—
1:158
called by those skilled in these matters the inward word—
1:159
他們在界定此詞時說,這是靈魂中在推理官能裡發生的一種最為完滿的動作,並無任何口頭的表達;
which, in defining it, they say is a most complete movement of the soul occurring within the discursive faculty, without any vocal utterance;
1:160
from which they say the uttered word proceeds.
1:161
他們又說,心思乃是那由明智所生、存於具明智者之中、對所思之事的知識;
And again they say that disposition is the knowledge of the thing thought about, which comes to be in the one possessing prudence as a result of prudence;
1:162
for they speak of prudence, and the object of prudence, and the one capable of prudence, and disposition.
1:163
明智是那關係;
And prudence is the relation;
1:164
所思之事乃是被思念之物;
the object of prudence is the thing thought about;
1:165
and disposition is the knowledge, arising from prudence in the one capable of prudence, of the thing thought about.
1:166
若此事確是如此;
If, then, this is so;
1:167
而抉擇卻並非如此;
but choice is not so;
1:168
then choice is not disposition.
1:169
但若他們說這些彼此完全等同,理由是欲求——亦即本性中具欲求能力之力——如同一個屬,平等地被述說於它們每一者之上;
But if they should say that they are altogether identical with one another, because desire—that is, the appetitive power of nature—is predicated of all of them equally as a genus;
1:170
let them also say that all the species too—both land-dwelling, winged, and aquatic—are identical with one another, because 'animal,' as the more generic term, is predicated of all of them equally as a genus; then the ordering of the whole universe will vanish for them,
1:171
there being no real subsistence of things that differ, but only a manifestation of empty names.
1:172
[...] GOD. Choice, then, having taken up impulse and use with regard to the things that are up to us, is the terminus of the rational movement of desire in us,
1:173
for that which is rational by nature possesses as a natural power the rational desire, which they also call the willing of the noetic soul—
1:174
因為他們說,意欲並非單純本性上的欲求,而是特定指向的欲求;
for they say that wish is not the simply natural desire, but the particular one;
1:175
亦即,對某一特定之事的意願;
that is, the willing directed toward some particular object;
1:176
(==) καί βουλόμενον ζητεῖ·
而心存意欲者便尋求;
and one who wishes seeks;
1:177
考量者便商議;
and one who considers deliberates;
1:178
and one who makes use [of a thing] ceases from the appetitive movement toward it.
1:179
因為沒有人是先未受衝動便逕自運用的;
For no one makes use [of a thing] without having first been impelled toward it;
1:180
也沒有人是未經抉擇便受衝動的;
and no one is impelled without having chosen;
1:181
也沒有人是未經判斷便抉擇的;
and no one chooses without having judged;
1:182
也沒有人是未經商議便判斷的;
and no one judges without having deliberated;
1:183
也沒有人是未經考量便商議的;
and no one deliberates without having considered;
1:184
也沒有人是未經尋求便考量的;
and no one considers without having sought;
1:185
也沒有人是未先意欲便尋求的;
and no one seeks without having wished;
1:186
也沒有人是未經衡量便意欲的;
and no one wishes without having reasoned;
1:187
也沒有人是未先欲求便衡量的;
and no one reasons without desiring;
1:188
and no one desires rationally without being rational by nature.
1:189
Man, then, being by nature a rational animal, is capable of desire, and capable of reasoning, and capable of wishing, and capable of seeking, and capable of considering, and capable of choosing, and capable of impulse, and capable of use.
1:190
而若人與其餘諸能一同,本性上也是具抉擇之能的動物;
But if, along with the rest, man is also by nature an animal capable of choice;
1:191
而抉擇所關乎的,乃是那些在我們能力範圍內、能經由我們而成就、且結局未定之事;
and choice concerns the things that are up to us, and that are able to come about through us, and that have an uncertain outcome;
1:192
而在我們能力範圍內的,也包括德行之理,即那按本性而有的諸力之律,正在運作之中;
and up to us also is the principle of the virtues, being the law of the powers according to nature, actively at work;
1:193
也包括那由於誤用同一諸力而生的方式,使那違反本性的種種情慾得以存立;
and also the mode arising from the misuse of these same powers, which gives subsistence to the passions contrary to nature;
1:194
therefore everyone who is by nature capable of choice is both receptive of opposites and able to judge between them.
1:195
而若他能對對立之事加以判斷,他也就必然具有抉擇之能;
But if he is able to judge between opposites, then he is altogether capable of choice as well;
1:196
and if he is capable of choice, inasmuch as the movement toward either alternative lies within his own power, he is not by nature immutable.
1:197
至於那些含糊未定之事:一旦那對眾人皆顯明的、自立自存的真理已被彰顯出來,抉擇——那藉由居間、且同樣在我們能力範圍內之事而運作的動作——便不復存在;
As for matters that are ambiguous: once the self-subsistent truth, manifest to all, has been demonstrated, choice—which is moved through the intermediate things that are also up to us—no longer exists;
1:198
because judgment, too, no longer exists—the judgment that draws a distinction between opposites, of which we choose the better in preference to the worse.
1:199
But if, then, according to the law of nature that now prevails, choice does not exist once every ambiguity concerning existing things has passed away, there will remain, for those who are thus by nature capable of desire, only an active noetic desire,
1:200
此欲求已不可言喻地、僅僅把握住那按本性而可欲之事物的奧秘享受,此即它先前藉由上述歷數之各階段所朝向的動作目標;
having ineffably laid hold only of the mystical enjoyment of that which is desirable according to nature, toward which it had, through the stages enumerated, its movement;
1:201
此享受的饜足,就在於那享用者自身欲求的無盡加深,直至無限;
of which the satiety consists in the unending intensification, unto infinity, of the very desire of those who enjoy it;
1:202
各人皆按其渴慕之程度,以超乎本性的方式而分享其中;
each one participating, in a manner surpassing nature, to the very extent that he longed [for it];
1:203
and there will be an immediate commingling with that very thing which is by nature desired.
1:204
But if to the extent that one has longed, to that extent he will participate in the thing longed for,
1:205
那麼,按本性之理而言,眾人的意願將顯明為一;
then, according to the principle of nature, the willing of all will be shown to be one;
1:206
but according to the mode of movement, it will be shown to be diverse.
1:207
而若按動作之式而言,眾人的意願並非為一;
But if, according to the mode of movement, the willing of all men is not one;
1:208
那麼,神與那些得救者的意願,就永不會如某些人所以為的,在一切樣式上都成為同一;
then never, in every mode, will the willing of God and of those being saved become one, as it has seemed to some;
1:209
even though the thing willed is one for both God and the saints—namely, the salvation of those who are being saved—
1:210
being a divine purpose, as the end of all the ages conceived beforehand.
1:211
論及此事,得救者彼此之間、以及與施救的神之間,將按照意願達成一致;
Concerning this, an agreement will come about, according to the act of willing, both among those who are being saved with one another and with God who saves;
1:212
神以恩典的尺度充滿萬有,普遍地涵括全體於萬有之中,又個別地含容每一物;
God — who fills all things by the measure of grace — comprehending the whole generically in all, and each particular thing individually;
1:213
且〔神〕在萬有之中被充滿,如同肢體一般,按照信德在每一位與祂本性相聯合者之中的比例;
and being fulfilled in all, after the manner of members, according to the proportion of the faith present in each of those who have been united by nature to him;
1:214
因為,若神的意志按本性是施救者,而人的意志按本性是被救者,那麼按本性施救者與按本性被救者,就絕不會是同一者;
For if the will of God is by nature that which saves, while that of men is by nature that which is saved, then that which by nature saves and that which by nature is saved could never be the same;
1:215
even though the aim of both is one — the salvation of all —
1:216
put forward, on the one hand, by God,
1:217
and chosen, on the other, by the saints.
1:218
但若依照如此主張者所言,神性的與人性的意志將是同一且數目為一——既然神藉意志使萬世存在——那麼聖徒的行伍也將藉同一意志成為造物主,無論是本性的意志,或是意念的意志;
But if the divine and the human will are to be the same and numerically one, according to those who say this — since God brought all the ages into existence by will — then the choir of the saints too will be creator by the same will, whether natural or gnomic;
1:219
且簡言之,藉那使他們天生與神性等同的意志;
and, simply put, by that will through which they are by nature identified with the divine;
1:220
which is absurd, and, I think, the work of a mind alone that is wandering.
1:221
因為,唯有在並非人人都是造物主,或唯獨使徒是,或唯獨先知是的情況下〔此說方能成立〕;
For [this would hold] so long as not all are creators, or apostles alone, or prophets alone;
1:222
而在這些人之中,又唯獨彼得是,或唯獨摩西是;
and again, among these, either Peter alone, or Moses alone;
1:223
且在神與父那裡,聖徒所得的居所並非眾多而是唯一;
and so long as there are not many mansions but one, with God and the Father, for the saints;
1:224
〔便會推出〕那按摹仿而向本性之善意志運動的人的意志,在本性的性質與數量上竟與之為同一——而這是不可能的(因為按本性能分享者,怎能與按本性被分享者為同一?);神與聖徒行伍在一切方式上有同一意念,這是不可能的;
[it would follow that] the human will, moved by imitation toward the will that is good by nature, is the same as it in natural quality and quantity — which is impossible (for how could that which by nature participates be the same as that which by nature is participated in?); it is impossible that there be, in every respect, one gnome of both God and the choir of the saints;
1:225
even though, as I said, the thing willed by both is one — the salvation of all —
1:226
around which the union of the wills takes place.
1:227
But, it seems, being unaware of what sort of absurd reasoning arises for them from what they say, they thoughtlessly allow their own mind to be carried toward things to which it ought not be carried.
1:228
For if the will, however it is conceived or spoken of, is not unrelated, and yet does not have the category of relation predicated of it,
1:229
it is a quality — though not one of those existing in themselves, since it is evidently contemplated in another.
1:230
而若意志屬於那些在他物之中被觀想的〔性質〕,它就必然是屬性;
But if the will belongs to those things contemplated in another, it is altogether an accident;
1:231
若是屬性,它就必是本質的特徵,或是位格的特徵(因為這兩者之間,就其自身而觀,並無中間項存在,也就是說,既非不參與兩者之一,亦非由兩者合成);
and if an accident, it will be characteristic either of essence or of hypostasis (for between these there is nothing intermediate considered in itself, that is, participating in neither, or composed of both);
1:232
and if of essence, they will be predicating one nature of both God and the saints —
1:233
all things having undergone, through the one will, a contraction into one essence.
1:234
For that which is predicated generically and equally of certain things is indicative of the essence under which they fall.
1:235
But if of hypostasis, there will be one hypostasis of both God and the saints, all being fused together into the same,
1:236
for that which is implanted in a hypostasis, if it is contemplated identically in others without variation, confounds all with one another,
1:237
and renders the principle of how each exists wholly indiscernible.
1:238
Therefore, since their reasoning has proved weak in these matters,
1:239
then neither, in passing over to our Lord and God and Savior of all, Christ, and contriving to establish one will, however styled, in him, could it ever prove strong.
1:240
因為,若他們稱基督的這意志為「本性的」,他們便立刻顯明患有摩尼教的幻想之病,因為他們如此主張:基督有一個既非現有、也永不將有的本性,並由與之相應的一個意志所彰顯;
For if they should call this will of Christ natural, they will thereby be shown to be afflicted with the Manichaean fantasy, since they proclaim one nature of Christ — which neither is nor shall ever be — as signified by a corresponding will;
1:241
and they will at once be caught emulating both the madness of Arius and the consubstantiation of Apollinaris,
1:242
as though they had estranged Christ, in respect of essence, from God the Father and from the immaculate Mother.
1:243
因為本性的意志,標誌著一個本性;
For the natural will characterizes a nature;
1:244
and if it characterizes a nature, it is clear that those who say this are proclaiming Christ as a nature.
1:245
But if Christ is a nature, he is truly neither God by nature, nor indeed man by nature,
1:246
since the Father is not truly Christ by nature, nor is the Mother truly Christ by nature.
1:247
But if Christ is God by nature, insofar as he is Christ by nature, then whoever says this holds to many gods,
1:248
positing one nature of the Father as God, since the Father is not by nature Christ,
1:249
又須主張基督有另一個本性,且堅持祂是神,因為祂按本性是基督;
and another nature of Christ, maintaining him to be God, since he is by nature Christ;
1:250
and the end of such a monstrous tale, for them, will be condemnation to polytheism.
1:251
But if [the will] is one of deliberate choice, which they call gnomic, it will altogether be either according to nature, having the mode of the use of the things practicable in Christ concurring throughout with the principle of nature —
1:252
in which case Christ will be shown, according to them, not to be impassible, but rather merely self-controlled amid the passions,
1:253
且無論祂本性為何,祂都是藉漸進而成善;
and good by progress, whatever he may be by nature;
1:254
for such is deliberate choice according to nature with respect to the practicable things pertaining to the one who chooses — making the better choiceworthy in preference to the worse —
1:255
or else [it will be] contrary to nature, and will show the mode of the use of the things pertaining to him to have become destructive of the principle of nature,
1:256
for such is deliberate choice contrary to nature with respect to the practicable things pertaining to the one who chooses — making the worse preferable in preference to the better.
1:257
因為,當那抉擇者按其籌謀,就自己所行之事所作的判斷——抉擇正是這判斷的所謂表決——或得以端正、或陷於偏差之後,那按本性〔而行〕之理,便藉善用而在他身上確立起來;或那違反本性之式,便藉誤用而附帶產生;
For once the judgment of the one who chooses, made by deliberation concerning the things practicable that pertain to him — of which deliberate choice is, so to speak, the casting vote — has either been rightly directed or has gone astray, either the principle according to nature comes to subsist in him through right use, or the mode contrary to nature comes to subsist alongside through misuse;
1:258
while he becomes the messenger of the deliberate choice that is contrary to nature.
1:259
And if the deliberate choice of Christ were according to nature, we would not only accuse them again on the same grounds, for rashly contriving another nature of Christ intermediate between the Godhead and creation,
1:260
but we would also laugh at their nonsense, since, after the manner of Nestorius, they make Christ receptive by deliberate choice of things naturally opposed, as though he were a mere man.
1:261
But if it is contrary to nature — I pass over the blasphemy in silence, lest, unawares, in the very refutations against them, I should defile my tongue.
1:262
For in asserting that the will in Christ is one of deliberate choice, they have altogether shown the hypostasis of Christ to be capable of moving both according to nature and contrary to nature,
1:263
因為正如我先前所說,抉擇正是這樣的東西;
for such, as I have already said, is deliberate choice;
1:264
and if it is characteristic of the hypostasis of Christ, then by this very will they have marked him off from the Father and the Spirit as one of a different will and a different mind.
1:265
For that which is contemplated particularly in the Son according to hypostasis is wholly incommunicable to the Father and the Spirit according to hypostasis.
1:266
As many, then, of the holy Fathers as have made mention of deliberate choice with regard to the humanity in Christ have thereby indicated, essentially, the appetitive power of nature —
1:267
signifying that it is our own deliberate choice that inheres, by appropriation, in the God who became flesh.
1:268
This, above all, your servant and disciple, having considered, called ‘deliberate choice’ in the work addressed to my most holy lord and teacher, Thalassius, concerning the difficulties of Holy Scripture,
1:269
knowing that, if the Maker of men became man for our sake, he has evidently also, for our sake, secured the immutability of deliberate choice, as the creator of immutability —
1:270
receiving, on the one hand, essentially and by his own authority, through actual experience, the passions that belong to our punishment,
1:271
and taking up, on the other hand, out of love for mankind, by appropriation, the passions that belong to dishonor —
1:272
of which he made the appropriation the cause, for our race, of impassibility in deliberate choice,
1:273
and bestowed the experience as a faithful pledge of the natural incorruption that follows.
1:274
For the human [will] of God has not been moved by deliberate choice as ours is — [a choice] effected through deliberation and judgment discerning between opposites —
1:275
免得它在抉擇上,被認為本性是可轉動的;
lest it be thought mutable by nature in respect of deliberate choice;
1:276
反倒是,它在與神—道聯合的同時獲得其存在,其按本性欲求、亦即意願的運動,是毫無猶疑的,或者更確切地說,是靜止不動的;
but, having received its very existence together with its union to God the Word, it possessed, as its natural appetitive movement — that is, its act of willing — a movement undoubting, or rather, at rest;
1:277
或者說得更確切些,是在祂裡面那按最純粹的本質化、完全被神—道所神化了的、不動的靜止;
or, to speak more properly, it possessed in itself a rest unmoved, wholly deified by God the Word according to the most pure essential union;
1:278
which he, forming and moving naturally as his own, and as the natural [movement] of his own soul, fulfilled, without illusion, the great mystery of the dispensation on our behalf,
1:279
having diminished nothing whatsoever that is natural to the assumed [humanity], save sin alone —
1:280
the principle of which has never once been sown in any of the things that exist.
1:281
既然名稱之間的區別,已藉由清晰地適合於各名稱的界定而向我們顯明,那麼,當我們聽見有人不加區辨地使用這些名稱,以致所思念之事被混淆時,我們就不要因此受擾;
Now that the difference of the names has become clear to us, through the definition clearly fitted to each, let us not be troubled when we hear those who use the names indiscriminately, unto the confusion of the things conceived;
1:282
因為真理對我們而言乃在於事物本身,而不在於名稱;
since truth for us lies in the things themselves, and not in names;
1:283
我們也不可認為不相同的即是相同的;
nor let us suppose that what is not the same is the same;
1:284
反倒要按著虔誠去相信,宣認基督確實是完全的神,也確實是完全的人,同一位在實際上、確切地、按真理而如此存在,而非僅以空洞的稱謂被如此稱呼;
but believing in accordance with piety, let us confess that Christ is truly perfect God and truly perfect man, the same one existing so in reality, properly, and according to truth, and not being called this by a mere bare title;
1:285
並且因此,既然他並非無肉身的,我們就當宣告他有兩個本性,而他自己正是這兩個本性的位格;
and therefore, since he is not without flesh, let us proclaim him to have two natures, of which he himself is the hypostasis;
1:286
並按照教父們的教導,[宣告他有]兩個本性的意志;
and two natural wills, according to the Fathers;
1:287
既然他並非無靈魂、無理智的,我們就當坦然宣稱他具備這兩者;
since he is not without soul and without mind, let us boldly declare that he possesses these;
1:288
and let us not presume to coin a new expression, for which we have no refuge in the authority of the Fathers.
1:289
因為說基督只有一個意志——無論是本性的意志,或是屬乎抉擇的意志——這是那些致力於敬虔之人所畏於言說的;不僅因著先前已指明的荒謬,也因為從未見有任何一位聖徒曾如此宣稱過;
For that Christ has one will — whether natural or of choice — is a thing that those zealous for piety fear to say, not only on account of the absurdity already demonstrated, but also because none of the saints has ever been shown to have said this;
1:290
knowing truly that deliberate choice belongs to things capable of moving toward both alternatives —
1:291
我是指善與惡二者——抉擇乃屬於那能夠被推動趨向其中任一者的事物;
I mean, both the good and the evil — belonging to things capable of being moved toward either;
1:292
which, applied to Christ — who is truly the essence and source of the good things — is, even to conceive, let alone to say, utterly filled with every impiety.
1:293
So much, then, concerning these matters.
1:294
But concerning the "one operation" set down in the seventh chapter of the Ambigua on the great Gregory, the explanation is clear:
1:295
因為,在描述聖徒將來要有的境況時,我曾說:神與聖徒有一個運作,就是那使一切聖徒得以成神的運作,屬於那所盼望的真福;
for, describing the condition that shall belong to the saints in the age to come, I said that there is one operation of God and of the saints — the operation that deifies all the saints — belonging to the blessedness that is hoped for;
1:296
belonging to God according to essence, but having come to belong to the saints according to grace.
1:297
更確切地說,我進一步指出,這運作單單屬於神;
Or rather, I added that it belongs to God alone;
1:298
since the deification of the saints according to grace is the effect of the divine operation alone, whose power we do not have implanted in our nature.
1:299
But of those things whose power we do not possess, neither do we possess the act, which is the fulfillment of a natural power.
1:300
因此,行為是繫屬於能力的;
The act, then, is dependent upon power;
1:301
and power is dependent upon essence; for the act proceeds from power, and power proceeds from essence and exists in essence.
1:302
These three, then, as they say, are bound to one another:
1:303
the capable [subject], power, and the possible.
1:304
他們稱「能者」為本質;
And they call the capable [subject] the essence;
1:305
稱「能力」為我們藉以擁有『能夠』之運動者;
power, that by which we have the movement of being able;
1:306
and the possible, that which is by nature apt to come to be by us according to power.
1:307
But that which is by nature apt to come to be by us, we possess according to natural power.
1:308
然而,成神並不屬於那些按其本性能夠藉由我們、依能力而成就之事,因為它並不在我們的能力範圍之內;
But deification is not among the things by nature apt to come to be by us according to power, since it is not among the things that are in our power;
1:309
for there is, within nature, no principle of the things above nature.
1:310
由此可見,成神並非出於我們能力的行為,因為我們並未按本性擁有這能力;
Deification, then, is not an act of our power, since we do not possess the power for it according to nature;
1:311
而僅僅是神聖能力的行為;它並非作為對聖徒義行的報償而存在;
but is an act of divine power alone, not existing as a recompense for the righteous works of the saints;
1:312
而是那創造者豐盛慷慨的明證;
but as a demonstration of the bounty of him who made them;
1:313
seeing that he, by an act of gracious institution, has made the lovers of the good to be that which he himself is by nature — as shall be shown, according to principles that he himself knows —
1:314
so that he might be both perfectly known, and remain utterly incomprehensible.
1:315
因此,我並未廢除那些將經歷此事(成神)之人的本性運作——這運作按其本性已經停止了它本可成就之事——而只顯明這運作僅僅是在經歷對美善之事的享受;
I did not, then, abolish the natural operation of those who shall undergo this deification — an operation which has by nature ceased from what it was apt to accomplish — but showed it only as undergoing the enjoyment of the good things;
1:316
but indicated only that it is the supra-essential power, productive of deification, which has come to belong to the deified according to grace.
1:317
And let no one suppose from this that one operation of Christ is being proclaimed.
1:318
因為我們所宣告的基督,並非一個被神化的人,而是完全成為人的神;祂藉著本性上具有運作能力、且被賦有理性靈魂的肉身,將祂自己那不可言喻之神性的無限能力——無限地、無限倍地、超乎無限地無限——彰顯出來;
For we do not proclaim Christ as a man who has been deified, but as God who became perfectly man, and who has made manifest the infinite — infinite, infinite-times infinitely supra-infinite — power of his own ineffable Godhead, through flesh that is by nature operative and intellectually ensouled;
1:319
同一位(基督)完全是神,也真實是人;
the same one being wholly God, and truly man;
1:320
且同一位在兩個本性上皆是完全、最為圓滿的;
the same one perfect and most complete in both natures;
1:321
possessing without deficiency everything whatsoever that is natural according to both natures, sin excepted, of which there is no principle in nature.
