1:635
ANSWER: As to the literal history, Chrysostom, interpreting the passage most skillfully, said that the first account, which states that those present heard the voice, means that they heard Paul's voice saying, 'Who art thou, Lord?' but saw no man except Paul.
1:636
But the second account, which states that they saw the light but did not hear the voice of him who spoke, means that they did not hear the voice that came from the Lord to Paul, but saw only the light.
1:637
But according to contemplation, the passage is to be understood thus:
1:638
按保羅之型,具知識之心智,以諸念頭為其同伴;
the gnostic mind, after the manner of Paul, has thoughts as its companions;
1:639
故當道初次向心智顯現之際,眾念頭所聞者僅是知識的回聲與影像,卻看不見任何清晰顯明之物;
so at the first appearance of the Word to the mind, the thoughts hear only echoes and phantasms of knowledge, but behold nothing clearly manifest;
1:640
but as the mind progresses and comes to be upon the steps, that is, upon lofty contemplation, the thoughts no longer partake of phantasms but come into perfect participation in the light of knowledge.
1:641
QUESTION: How ought the repentance of God found in Scripture be piously understood? ANSWER: Those who have resolved to think piously of divine things say that it is impossible for God, being by nature Creator, not to be by nature also the provider for the things He has created.
1:642
And if this is so, it is altogether necessary that, since God by nature provides for humanity, there are with Him many modes concerning the nature under His providence, in view of salvation.
1:643
For since man is a quick-turning creature, readily changing along with times and circumstances, it is altogether necessary that the divine providence too, being one and the same, should change along with our dispositions, devising a manner fittingly suited to the evils that arise in our nature.
1:644
And just as in medicine there are many diseases underlying it, and it is necessary for the skilled physician, since the underlying body falls into many and various afflictions, himself to pass from lesser to better methods, so also with God, the passage of providence from one manner to another is customarily called by Scripture 'the repentance of God.'
1:645
問:詩篇一百零四篇所說:「祂使他們的心轉向,去恨惡祂的百姓」,此語是何意?答:神不僅在萬世之先,按真理本身,知道那存在者是如同存在於祂之內;縱使萬有本身——無論是現存的還是將來的——並非在被知道的同時就領受了其自身的存在,而是各按其適宜的時機(因為無限者與有限者不可能同時並存);神也知道每一事物依其運動而有的意向之終局;
QUESTION: What does the saying in Psalm 104 mean, 'He turned their heart to hate his people'? ANSWER: God knows not only the things that are, before the ages, as existing in Him in very truth — even though all these things themselves, both those that are and those that shall be, did not receive their being-in-themselves at the same time as their being known, but each at its fitting time (for it is not possible for the infinite and the finite to exist together) — but also the end of each thing's disposition according to its motion;
1:646
因為並沒有時間或世代介於其間,將此與神隔斷;
for there is no time or age that interposes between this and God;
1:647
因為在祂之內沒有什麼是新近才有的,而未來之事如同現在一般存在;
for nothing in Him is recent, but the things to come are as things present;
1:648
but times and ages are indicative, not to God, but to us, of the things that exist in God.
1:649
Let us not, therefore, suppose that when we see God doing something, at that point His knowledge concerning it began.
1:650
And if this is true, as indeed it is, He knew altogether, as present, not only the wickedness that was going to belong to the Egyptians, and their choice disobedient to every working of good things, and their disposition apt for vengeance for the evils done to the Israelites out of the custom prevailing in Egypt, but also the disposition of the Israelites that was going to draw near obediently to the word of piety through faith.
1:651
既然如此,祂容許這些先前為祂所抑制、隱藏的意向進入運作,就此而言,祂被稱為「使……轉向」;
Since, then, He allowed such hidden dispositions, previously restrained by Him, to come into operation, in this respect He is said to have 'turned' their heart;
1:652
for just as with a sluice-gate secured and forcibly holding back the rush of water, if someone should happen to turn it, the water immediately releases its hidden rush, so also both the evil and the good dispositions, providence permitting, are brought into the open through intervening events.
1:653
問:《出埃及記》中,摩西與法老分別是誰的預表?埃及又是什麼?各樣災殃為何有人遭受、有人不遭受?滅命者是誰?長子之死又是什麼?為何《聖經》有時說「從埃及領上來」,有時又說「領出來」?答:摩西是敬虔者及其結局的預表,法老則是不敬虔者及其結局的預表;
QUESTION: In Exodus, of whom were Moses and Pharaoh types, and what is Egypt, and how did the plagues affect some but not others? And who is the destroyer, and what is the death of the firstborn, and why does Scripture in one place say 'led up out of Egypt,' and in another 'led out'? ANSWER: Moses is a type of the pious and of their end, and Pharaoh of the impious and of their end;
1:654
for insofar as Moses was obedient and pliable for the impress of the divine commands, to that same degree Pharaoh was disposed to the contrary.
1:655
And Egypt, according to one of the interpretations concerning it, is translated 'darkening,' and it is taken to signify this present age.
1:656
地理學者說,埃及地勢比全地都要低窪;
And the geographers say that Egypt is lower-lying than all the earth;
1:657
for this reason Scripture says not only 'led out' but also 'led up' — 'leading out' signifying those coming from the fleshly attachment to the spirit, and 'leading up' signifying those carried up from material things to the intelligible things.
1:658
「埃及人」指的是一切愛享樂、愛世界的人,即使他們肉身出身高貴也是如此;
And Egyptians are all who are lovers of pleasure and lovers of the world, even if they should be of noble birth in body;
1:659
and Israelites are all who are lovers of God and haters of the world.
1:660
因此對某些人而言,水就是血;對另一些人而言,水依然是本性的水;
For some, then, the water is blood; for others, water according to nature;
1:661
因為水既是滋養且賦予生命之物,這便表明:凡以此生之機緣行不義、掠奪、貪婪之事者,既是加害於他人者的兇手,其水便成為血;
for since water is nourishing and life-giving, it signifies that whoever makes the occasion of this life serve injustice, plunder, and covetousness, being a murderer of those wronged by him, has water as blood;
1:662
but whoever has the occasion of his life from just labors, for him the water is the water of life.
1:663
The firstborn of the Egyptians are killed because they do not have their doorposts anointed with the blood of the lamb.
1:664
The firstborn are the first offspring and thoughts of the mind; the doorposts are the senses; the destroyer is the devil, who through the senses binds the soul to sensible things and abolishes every divine movement of it.
1:665
問:詩篇七十五篇所說:「人的意念要向你承認(認罪),意念的餘剩要向你守節」,是何意?答:節期屬於歡欣者,認罪屬於受察驗者;
QUESTION: What is meant by what is said in Psalm 75, 'The thought of man shall confess to you, and the remnant of thought shall keep festival to you'? ANSWER: The festival belongs to those who rejoice, while confession belongs to those who are tested;
1:666
and the one belongs to grief, the other to joy.
1:667
此語意即:在審判中,那短暫而未竟的善念,與那邪惡且已完成的意念相權衡時,反而更佔優勢;
This, then, is what it means: that in the judgment, the transient and imperfect thought of the good, when weighed against the evil and fully-accomplished thought, has the greater weight;
1:668
for the one is tested, while the other becomes the occasion of festival and joy.
1:669
問:使徒說:「我在教會中寧可用悟性說五句話……強如說萬句方言」,此語何意?答:他「說五句話」,雖然所說的只是一件事,即那述說有關五種感官之教導性言語的人;
QUESTION: What does the Apostle mean when he says, 'I would rather speak five words in the church... than ten thousand words in a tongue'? ANSWER: He speaks five words, even though what is spoken is one, meaning he who speaks the pedagogical word concerning the five senses;
1:670
but he speaks ten thousand words in a tongue who, through his own word, makes a summoning of the passions.
1:671
那藉著在靈裡對萬有的默觀,指明造物主之人,便是「說五句話」的人;
He speaks five words who, through contemplation in the spirit of the things that exist, points to the Creator;
1:672
因為本性是五重的,由形式與四元素構成;
for nature is fivefold, consisting of form and the four elements;
1:673
但那編織華麗辭藻與巧言連綴、談論可見之物之運作、以求自己的榮耀與享樂,並將受造之物奉為神明而非造物主之人,便是「用方言說萬句話」的人;
but he speaks ten thousand words who fashions ornate discourses and persuasive combinations concerning the operation of visible things, for his own glory and pleasure, and who makes a god of the creation rather than the Creator;
1:674
for creation was not given in order to be made a god, but in order to teach of God.
1:675
and every man who is preoccupied with these things falls short of the divine promises.
1:676
QUESTION: What is the etymology of gluttony? ANSWER: None of the grammarians or rhetoricians has recorded it.
1:677
但亞里斯多德在其著作《論動物》中提及一種名為「馬爾戈斯」的動物,並說牠是從土與水之間的腐敗中所生;
But Aristotle, in his work 'On Animals,' mentions an animal called 'margos,' and says that it is born from putrefaction between earth and water;
1:678
牠自出生之後,便不斷地吃土,直到將土鑽穿、來到地表為止;
and from the time it is born, it does not cease eating earth until, having tunneled through the earth, it comes to the surface;
1:679
after three days a cloud of rain comes and rains upon it, and it revives, no longer being one who ever eats.
1:680
And from this, I suppose, the ancient philosophers, taking their cue, called those who eat much 'gastrimargoi' [gluttons].
1:681
因為一切情皆本性上生於腐敗,一旦產生,便不斷吞噬滋養它的心,直到藉著爭戰之定性而顯露出來為止;
For every passion is naturally born from putrefaction, and once born, it does not cease consuming the heart that gave it subsistence, until, through the settled state of ascetic struggle, it comes to manifestation;
1:682
and having come to manifestation, it dies by the three powers of the soul, and thus the grace of the Holy Spirit, appearing as through a cloud of teaching, gives drops of knowledge and gives life — not according to the former passion-bound life, but according to the virtuous life proper to God.
1:683
QUESTION: What is the parable in the Gospel of the laborers hired for the vineyard, and what is the seeming inequality? ANSWER: The judgment of God does not occur according to time and body, because the soul too, being timeless and bodiless, since it does not receive its growth and its limit according to time, makes the movements of its disposition timelessly.
1:684
藉一個例子來闡明所論之事,是有益的;
It is good to clarify what is said by means of an example;
1:685
常有人在獨修生活中度過七十年,也有人僅僅一日;
often there is one who has spent seventy years in the solitary life, and another only one day;
1:686
既然此聖召的目標乃是要人從對物質之偏愛與關係中拔除出來,將全部靈魂轉向神;那麼那活了七十年的人,若絲毫未曾為此無情之境用心,便如此死去;而那僅活一日的人,若已將自己一切向物質之有情思念盡皆拔除,全心投入神的懷抱,便已臻於完全;
since, then, the aim of the profession is that one, having torn away from attachment and relation to material things, should transfer the whole soul to God, the one who has lived seventy years, having taken no care at all for such dispassion, died still so; while the one who has lived one day, having torn away all his passion-bound thought toward material things and having wholly embraced it to God, was made perfect;
1:687
in the distribution, then, that takes place according to the judgment, the one receives the wage worthily, as having brought the aim of the profession to its end, while the other receives it by grace alone, in return for the labor of ascetic discipline he endured.
1:688
問:那麼,約伯在他所遭遇的事上,是否根本未曾接納憂愁?答:我們說,約伯確實成了一個不接納憂愁的人;
QUESTION: Was grief, then, something Job did not admit in what befell him? ANSWER: We say that Job became one who did not admit grief;
1:689
因為凡曾一度虔敬地省察萬有,並在自己心中堅立了對過往事物之恨與對不過往之事物之愛的人,又怎能因這些暫時之物依其本性所慣受的變遷而憂愁呢?問:既然如此,為何沒有一位聖人接納過憂愁,然而卻又說許多聖人曾懷有憂愁,正如保羅所說:「我是常有憂愁」等等?答:凡從事於實踐之事的人,只要良心因記憶中浮現的種種形象刺痛、擊打他,他就必然懷有那值得稱許的憂愁;
for he who has once piously made his examination of the things that are, and has confirmed in himself hatred toward transient things and love toward the things that do not pass away — how could he be grieved when transient things suffer, through a change of condition, what they are naturally accustomed to suffer? QUESTION: Why, then, did none of the saints admit grief, and yet how is it said of many saints that they had grief, just as Paul also says, 'I have unceasing grief,' and so forth? ANSWER: He who is occupied with the practical matters, so long as conscience pricks and strikes him through the images that arise according to memory, altogether grieves with the praiseworthy grief;
1:690
但那已達到完全之量度者,則超越此憂愁之上;
but he who has attained to the measure of perfection comes to be even above this;
1:691
for both grief and joy are said of God according to His providence — grief over those who perish, and joy over those who are saved.
1:692
The principle of grief, then, is one, but it admits many modes of dispositions.
1:693
Fellow-feeling, and a superabundance of joy, when a God-like perfection, laid up within, is providentially distributed to the things without.
1:694
一方面,是那為實踐之事釐定所當行者,此者亦先於實踐之事;
the one, on the one hand, is that which defines for the practical matters what is needful, which indeed also precedes the practical matters;
1:695
and the other is that which reflects upon the things done, which is also thought of after the action.
1:696
"I planted a vineyard and set a fence around it," and so forth.
1:697
答:栽種葡萄園表示創造,籬笆表示自然律法,柵欄則表示成文律法;
ANSWER: The planting of the vineyard signifies creation, the fence signifies the natural law, and the paling signifies the written law;
1:698
by which the Creator secured our nature.
1:699
凡按抉擇真誠地耕耘那本性上善之種者,此人便為栽種者結出了果實;
Whoever, then, cultivates the natural sowing of the good genuinely, according to choice, that one has produced fruit for the planter;
1:700
but whoever is irrationally carried toward non-being, that one produces thorns, that is, the passions, and is trampled by the demons who bring these about.
1:701
QUESTION. From the Song of Songs:
1:702
"Come from Lebanon, bride, come from Lebanon; from the dens of lions, from the mountains of leopards."
1:703
答。身為道的神,對那藉著善行與自己訂婚的靈魂,或者也對全人類的本性說話,叫她從偶像崇拜(這就是黎巴嫩所表示的)與邪惡的定性(這正是獅子的洞穴所表示的)中出來;
ANSWER. God the Word says to the soul that is betrothed to him through good works — or indeed to the whole nature of humanity — to go forth from idolatry (for this is what Lebanon signifies) and from vicious disposition (which is what the dens of the lions signify);
1:704
因為獅子總是撲向肩膀,就是實踐生活;「從豹子的山嶺」,就是從無知而來;
for the lion always attacks the shoulders — that is, the practical [life] — and "from the mountains of leopards," that is, from ignorance;
1:705
for this animal by nature makes its attack against the eyes, and the eyes are plainly taken [to signify] knowledge.
1:706
"Upon the mountains and the hills I will contend with you."
1:707
ANSWER. Since angels have been entrusted with providential care for the life of soul and body and for this earthly place, ministering to us divine words, and likewise the prophets too have conveyed to us, through their own words, the ways of salvation — it is concerning these, then, that he says he will contend with us, calling the mountains the angels, and the hills the patriarchs and prophets.
1:708
QUESTION. What does the verse of the psalm mean: "He will take up the orphan and the widow, and will destroy the way of sinners"? ANSWER. The widow is the soul that has let the natural law die; the orphan is the underhanded manner [of conduct], practiced for the sake of ostentation and grosser gains, not having God as father.
1:709
"Because they had no covering, they wrapped themselves about with a rock."
1:710
答。那先前沒有遮蔽——就是信——的,是外邦人;
ANSWER. Those who formerly had no covering — that is, faith — were the nations;
1:711
and they wrapped themselves about with the rock, [that is,] faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
1:712
問。是否可能找到關於聖三一的自然證明?答。凡存在之物,都被認為以三種樣式存在:在實體上、在區別上、在生命上;
QUESTION. Whether it is possible to find a natural demonstration concerning the Holy Trinity? ANSWER. All existing things are believed to exist in three modes: in substance, in differentiation, in life;
1:713
從萬有實體的本理,我們確信有某種實體存在——這就是父;
and from the inner principle of the substance of beings we are assured that there is some substance — this is the Father;
1:714
and from the differentiation of beings, [we are assured of] wisdom, that is, the Son — for it belongs to wisdom to allot to each nature its fitting property, and to preserve each of the things that have come into being distinct and unconfused, both in relation to itself and to the rest; and from life, the Holy Spirit.
1:715
But in the case of God these are hypostatic and are so spoken of, whereas in the case of creatures they are accidents.
1:716
QUESTION. From St. Gregory the Theologian, on the words "All brought in what had been proclaimed to them, but some were self-prompted" — what do the things brought in signify? ANSWER. The self-prompted are those who come to the good from the natural seeds present within them; those who were proclaimed to are those who come to the good through teaching.
1:717
獻金子的,是那虔誠地論述神學的人;獻銀子的,是那生活純潔、教導明亮而透澈的人;獻寶石的,是那以神聖的言語裝飾實踐生活之權能的人;獻捻成的細麻的,是那在非自願的試探中持守德行之定性不動搖、並藉此如水一般洗淨、漂白靈魂因罪而生之念頭的人;獻紡成的朱紅線的,是那憑藉理性之豐盛、藉著使身體肢體死去而除滅那在我們能力之內的快感與情的人;獻紫色布的,是那準確無誤地將萬有的知識擁入懷中的人;
And gold is offered by the one who piously discourses on theology; silver by the one whose life is pure and whose teaching is bright and transparent; precious stones by the one who adorns the dominion of the practical [life] with divine words; twisted fine linen by the one who preserves the settled state of virtue unshaken amid involuntary trials, and through these, in the manner of water, washes and whitens the thoughts that arise in the soul from sin; spun scarlet by the one who, by the abundance of reason, obliterates the pleasure and passions within our power through the mortification of the members of the body; and purple by the one who has embraced, accurately and unfailingly, the knowledge of beings;
1:718
因為紫色按單一取義是用來表示知識的;
for purple, according to a single application, is taken [to signify] knowledge;
1:719
for it is composed of many and various kinds [of dye], just as knowledge too is composed of many and various contemplations.
1:720
一種是因罪愆而生,另一種是按所愛者的價值而生;
one on account of transgressions, the other according to the worth of the one loved;
1:721
Love, therefore, puts away the fear that arises from transgressions, but preserves the fear that is according to the worth of the one loved.
1:722
Exultation is the joyful disposition upon the acquisition of certain things, while gladness is the enjoyment of the things [already] acquired.
1:723
問。在睡夢中顯給法老看的牛群與麥穗表示什麼?答。這裡法老是用來表示本性的;
QUESTION. What do the cows and the ears of grain shown to Pharaoh in his sleep signify? ANSWER. Here Pharaoh is taken [to signify] nature;
1:724
美好的牛群表示實踐生活,麥穗則表示知識;
and the good cows signify the practical [life], and the ears of grain signify knowledge;
1:725
Knowledge and practice operate [together].
1:726
But the other cows and ears of grain, the ugly and wind-blighted ones, signify ignorance and vice, which had the strength to devour both the vigor of the practical [life] signified by the cows, and the knowledge signified by the good ears of grain.
1:727
But our Lord Jesus Christ, the true Joseph, who alone both foreknows and remedies such a famine, taking faith as gold, and a bright life as silver, and moral philosophy as sheep, and the swift and eager [quality] of life according to God as horses, supplies the grain, that is, true knowledge.
1:728
QUESTION. Who is the unjust judge in the Gospel, and who is the widow woman? ANSWER. By "the judge of injustice" [Scripture] means the natural law, hardened by transgression and respecting neither God nor man; and by "the widow" [it means] the soul bereft of good works.
1:729
For if this [soul] should come to repentance, it forces the natural law by importuning it, through asceticism and self-control, to abstain from what is contrary to nature.
1:730
又說,若心智憑著懇切而勤勉的堅持,尚且有力量成就那超乎本性的事,何況神豈不更要垂聽那藉著懇切、不知羞怯的堅持禱告向祂呼求的人呢?問。以西結先知所領受、上面寫著哀歌、頌歌與禍哉之字卷是什麼?它又怎樣在他口中變甜了?答。這字卷就是神聖的道;
And if, he says, the mind, through zealous and industrious persistence, has the strength to accomplish even what is above nature, how much more, he says, will God listen to those who cry out to him through fervent and importunate prayerful persistence? QUESTION. What is the scroll given to the prophet Ezekiel, in which were written lamentation, and song, and woe, and how was it made sweet in his mouth? ANSWER. The scroll is the divine Word;
1:731
and written in it is lamentation, that is, the threats of punishments; song, the promises of good things; and woe, because those who are made sober neither by fear of the punishments nor by the exhortation of the promises, and do not become better, will assuredly receive the woe of eternal punishment.
1:732
And that the scroll was made sweet in the mouth of the prophet signifies this: that he who continually meditates on the things aforesaid, and gives heed to what is threatened and what is promised, is made sweet by hope.
1:733
因為這些也需要主向它們的臨到;
for these too had need of the Lord's visitation to them;
1:734
for in him, according to the Apostle, were recapitulated not only the things on earth but also the things in heaven.
1:735
And after this he was presented to God the Father, and thus the Spirit descends.
1:736
But it is possible to contemplate the matter at hand also according to another mode of contemplation:
1:737
因為神的道隱藏在祂的十誡之中,並藉著實踐生活在我們裡面成為有形體的,向我們俯就下降;又再藉著知識引領我們向上,高舉我們,直到我們來到那高於一切誡命的誡命,就是說「耶和華你的神,耶和華是獨一的」;
for since the Word of God is hidden within his ten commandments, and is embodied in us, condescending to us through the practical [life], and again leads us upward, exalting us through knowledge, until we come to the commandment loftier than all, which says, "The Lord your God, the Lord is one";
1:738
for when our mind, released from all things — or rather, having itself released all things — comes to rest at last in God himself, then it receives the fiery tongues, becoming god by grace.
1:739
QUESTION. Why is it that, although Luke says in Acts concerning Paul that he was hastening, if it were possible for him, to spend the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, he appears to have made a genuflection, which is forbidden by the canons? ANSWER. He is not speaking of Pentecost itself, on which the Spirit descended, but since the fifty days are called "the day of Pentecost," Paul was hastening to spend the first day after Easter in Jerusalem, as is clear from the fact that during the fasts he bent the knee.
1:740
問。使徒保羅為何自稱為羅馬人,並在與千夫長談話時說「我生來就是」呢?答。各省的人,認為被稱為羅馬人是一件了不起的事,就繳納費用,登記自己為羅馬人,這名號便流傳於其宗族之中;
QUESTION. Why does the apostle Paul call himself a Roman, and, in conversing with the tribune, say, "But I was even born [one]"? ANSWER. Those throughout every province, thinking it a great thing to be called Romans, would register themselves as Romans by paying fees, and the name would pass on to their lineage;
1:741
since, then, the apostle's parents also, being in Tarsus, had been registered to be called Romans, the apostle reasonably says, as one born of them, "But I was even born [one]."
1:742
QUESTION. From Amos the prophet:
1:743
"and two or three cities will gather together into one city to drink water, and they will not be satisfied;"
1:744
城邑表示什麼?答。這裡的「城邑」當理解為靈魂,因為靈魂如同由房屋所構成一般,是由〔許多部分〕組成的,並且是能容納諸德行的;
What do the cities signify? ANSWER. Here "cities" must be understood as souls, because, like [things composed] of houses, they are made up [of many parts] and are receptive of the virtues;
1:745
而兩座城〔表示〕那藉著實踐生活與默觀而被建立起來的靈魂;
and the two cities [signify] souls that have been built up through practice and contemplation;
1:746
and the three [signify souls] that rightly accomplish theology through undoubting faith.
1:747
既然先知是以咒詛的形式陳述此事,這就表示:當饑荒來到——不是缺乏糧食和水的饑荒,而是不得聽聞主之言語的饑荒——這樣的靈魂即使已達到前述諸德行的量度,卻懈怠疏忽,他們看似在尋求知識,但因為不從事實踐生活,便徒然無獲;
Since, then, the prophet set this down in the form of a curse, it signifies that when a famine comes — not of bread and water, but a famine of hearing the word of the Lord — even if such souls have reached the measure of the aforesaid virtues, yet grow negligent, they seem to seek knowledge, but because they do not pursue the practical [life], they fail [to attain it];
1:748
即使他們看似聚集到一座城,就是到教師那裡去,也不得飽於知識;
and even if they seem to gather into one city, that is, to the teacher, they are not filled with knowledge;
1:749
for neither is the grace of teaching given to him — [namely] the power to be able to give the divine knowledge to drink to those in need.
1:750
"The city from which a thousand went out, a hundred will be left; and [the city] from which a hundred went out, ten will be left."
1:751
ANSWER. Since every number is comprised within four decades — for instance, the first decade [proceeds] from the unit; then this decade itself, in turn, is a unit of the hundred; then the hundred is a unit of the thousand; and again the thousand is a unit of the myriad — since, then, the number of virtue too increases by advance and receives increment, this, I think, is what is signified through the numbers: that one who has so rightly accomplished the ten commandments that each commandment is comprised within the rest, having multiplied these tenfold, has arrived at the hundred, and, after the manner of Sarah, has received the addition of the [letter] rho.
1:752
And whoever has also rightly accomplished the knowledge that comes after these, having multiplied the hundred tenfold, has arrived at the thousand.
1:753
既然這一點也是先知以咒詛的形式所說的,這就表示:那已達到德行之千的量度的人,因懈怠疏忽而降落,退到百的量度;
And since this too was spoken by the prophet in the form of a curse, it signifies that, through negligence, one who had come to the measure of the thousand in virtue is brought down and comes to the hundred;
1:754
and likewise also the one [who descends] from the hundred in the practical [life] comes to a mere observance of the commandments according to outward custom, or even performs them in a Jewish manner.
1:755
"Woe to those who desire the day of the Lord! And this [day] is darkness and not light — just as when a man flees from before a lion and a bear meets him, and he leaps into his house and leans his hands against the wall, and a serpent bites him."
1:756
答。主的日子就是主的光照與知識;
ANSWER. The day of the Lord is the illumination and the knowledge of the Lord;
1:757
所以,凡想不憑實踐生活而抓住神之知識的人,理當被稱為有禍的;
whoever, then, desires to lay hold of the knowledge of God without the practical [life], he is rightly pronounced miserable;
1:758
因為他被情所困擾,就是忿怒與情慾,他為要逃避獅子——就是忿怒——的咬噬,卻落入情慾的熊口中;
for, being troubled by the passions — both wrath and desire — seeking to flee from being bitten by the lion, that is, by wrath, he falls into the bear of desire;
1:759
然後,被這些所困迫,他就跑進屋裡,把手靠在牆上,卻被蛇咬;
then, being hemmed in by these, he leaps into the house and leans his hands against the wall, and a serpent bites him;
1:760
屋子就是靈魂,牆就是身體;
the house is the soul, and the wall is the body;
1:761
所以,每當人將靈魂的實踐能力倚靠在身體的享樂上,快感便會出來——牠正是那條蛇——並咬他;
whenever, then, one leans the practical powers of the soul upon the enjoyment of the body, pleasure comes forth — for it is this that is the serpent — and it bites him;
1:762
for through each sense of the body, as through an opening, pleasure creeps in and bites the wretched soul.
1:763
To one, then, who is thus ailing in the eyes of the soul, the sun of knowledge is darkness and blindness.
1:764
QUESTION. From the Psalter:
1:765
"The words of the Lord are pure words, silver refined by fire, tried in the earth, purified seven times."
1:766
答。它們被稱為純淨,是因為它們潔淨我們脫離一切罪的污穢;
ANSWER. They are called pure inasmuch as they purify us from every stain of sins;
1:767
又被稱為爐中煉過的銀子,是因為它們的透澈與光照之性,正如在銀子中所見的一般;
and [they are called] silver refined by fire on account of their transparency and their illuminating quality, as in silver;
1:768
又是因為它們的神聖性,以及它們試驗我們內心的作用;
and on account of their divine character, and their testing of our hearts;
1:769
因為心在福音書中被稱為「地」;
for the heart is called "earth" in the Gospel;
1:770
and [they are called] purified seven times, whenever we purify each commandment sevenfold.
1:771
在單一誡命上,把所說的話講清楚,是好的;
It is good that what is said be made clear in the case of a single commandment;
1:772
the law declares, "You shall not murder."
1:773
Whoever, then, wishes to purify this commandment sevenfold, not only abstains from murder by the hand, but also, if he sees one hungry, feeds him; if he sees one thirsty, gives him drink; if he sees one naked, clothes him; if he sees a stranger, takes him in; if he sees one sick, does not overlook him; and if he sees one in prison, runs to him.
1:774
簡言之,凡疏忽這些事中任何一件的人,按此便是犯了殺人的罪;
And simply put, whoever neglects one of these has, by this reckoning, committed murder;
1:775
for, as far as it depended on him, he allowed the one in need of him to die, though he was able to restore him.
1:776
因此,凡把主所列舉的那六條誡命,與律法中「不可殺人」這條誡命連結起來的人,便使主的話七倍潔淨;
Whoever, then, joins the six enumerated commandments of the Lord to the legal commandment "You shall not murder" purifies the word of the Lord sevenfold;
1:777
and it is possible to apply this also to each commandment.
1:778
QUESTION. From Proverbs:
1:779
"Let your foot rarely enter your friend's house, lest, being sated with you, he hate you."
1:780
ANSWER. Here he calls our body a "friend," on account of our natural union and affection toward it.
1:781
The saying, then, exhorts that care for the body not be made a matter of anxious concern, but that provision for it be made only in step with the trace of the soul — and this too but rarely — lest, by your setting great store by its rest, it display in you the marks of enemies and of those who hate.
1:782
當理解「白日所偷的」,是指藉著外在感官從那惡者臨到我們身上的失敗,為此,那位先祖曾以苦修的勞苦來償還;
Understand by "thefts by day" the defeats that befall us from the evil one through the outward senses, for which the patriarch used to pay the toils of asceticism;
1:783
and "thefts by night" are those by which the enemy plunders us through inward thoughts, for which, after the pattern of the patriarch, we must pay toils and vigils and the other kinds of asceticism.
1:784
QUESTION. What does the heifer signify whose neck is broken in the valley, according to the law concerning ignorance of a murder? ANSWER. It signifies through these things the spiritual intent of Scripture: that we must fear not only concerning manifest sins, as those who are about to render account for them, but also, fearing on behalf of what we do unknowingly, must always break the neck of the heifer — that is, our flesh — in the valley of self-control and asceticism.
1:785
問:拿答和亞比戶獻上凡火,因此被燒滅,這象徵什麼?答:那些常向神供祭司職分、將自己獻給神作活祭、又如革流巴那樣心中懷有聖靈熾熱之情的人,便是將自己的火獻給神;
QUESTION. What do Nadab and Abihu signify, who offered strange fire and were therefore burned up? ANSWER. Those who continually serve God as priests, and offer themselves to God as a living sacrifice, and have within themselves the fervor of the Holy Spirit after the pattern of Cleopas, offer their own fire to God;
1:786
but whenever, through negligence, they fall outside this state and gather within themselves the inflaming of the passions, then they have brought in strange fire, and their conscience is burned up by the fire of reproof.
1:787
問:律法所定的祭物中,為何總是同時獻上細麵,有時和油調和,有時放入爐中,有時放入鍋裡?答:這細麵當理解為指向理性,因它是理性存有者的食糧;
QUESTION. For what reason is fine flour always included together with the sacrifices of the law, sometimes mixed with oil, sometimes baked in an oven, sometimes in a pan? ANSWER. The fine flour is to be taken as referring to reason, being the food of rational beings;
1:788
當它和油調和時,便表示理性與知識之光照相結合;
and when it is mixed with oil, it signifies reason together with the illumination of knowledge;
1:789
但當它放入鍋裡時,便表示理性藉著從我們內裡而來的享樂性試探受了考驗、得以堅立;
but when in the pan, it signifies reason tested and made firm through the pleasurable temptations that assail us from within;
1:790
but when in the oven, it signifies reason made firm through the testing, in patient endurance, of the temptations that assail us from without.
1:791
問:那二百五十個聚眾反抗摩西、獻香的人,象徵什麼?他們獻香時,有火從主那裡出來,吞滅了他們,主又吩咐以利亞撒把他們的香爐拿去,打成薄片,釘在祭壇上。答:五十這數目,用於屬神之事時,向來被理解為超越時間之下諸事者;
What do the two hundred and fifty men signify, who rose up together against Moses and, offering incense, had fire come out from the Lord and consume them, so that the Lord commanded Eleazar to take up their censers and make them into hammered plates and fasten them to the altar? ANSWER. The number fifty, with reference to divine things, is always taken as transcending things under time;
1:792
but the number two hundred [pertains] to sensible things and the senses, on account of the combining of the number four with the number five.
1:793
All those, then, who apprehend sensible things in a sensible manner, and pursue divine virtues for the sake of sensible things, rise up together against the divine law, and their conscience is burned up by the fire of reproof.
