Καὶ ἔφθασα δι' ἡμερῶν δεκαοκτώ , τὰ μὲν πεζεύσας , τὰ δὲ καὶ πλεύσας ἐν τῷ ποταμῷ
我用了十八天才抵達,一部分路程是步行,一部分是在河上乘船。
And I arrived in eighteen days, partly going on foot, partly also sailing on the river.

那時正是尼羅河漲水的時節,許多人在這時節患病;
Now the time was that of the rising of the Nile, in which many fall sick;

原來弟兄們後來加建了一間極大的前廳,可容約一百人;
for afterward the brethren had built on a very large vestibule, in which about a hundred men have room;

καὶ κλειδίῳ ἀποκλείοντες κατὰ σάββατον καὶ κυριακὴν ἤνοιγον

and locking it with a little key, on the Sabbath and the Lord's Day they would open it.

Having learned, then, the reason for which it was shut, I kept quiet until the Sabbath.

我在聚會時於第二時辰到達,發現他正坐在窗前,藉著那扇窗戶勸勉那些在場的人。
And having arrived at the second hour at the meeting, I found him seated by the window, through which he seemed to exhort those who happened to be present.

"Whence are you, and why have you come? For I conjecture that you are of the company of Evagrius."

In the meantime, while we were speaking, there came in the governor of the region, Alypius by name;

他們談了許久,我心裡發了倦怠,倦怠之下便暗暗埋怨那良善的老人,以為他輕看了我,卻尊重了那人。
But as they conversed at length, I grew weary in spirit, and growing weary I murmured against the good old man, as having despised me but honoured that one.

我因這緣故心中煩亂,便起意要退去,輕看了他。
And being vexed in mind on this account, I considered withdrawing, despising him.

And when the governor had gone out, he calls me and says to me:

Οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ὑγιαίνοντες ἰατροῦ ἀλλ' οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες; Σὲ ὅτε θέλω εὑρίσκω , καὶ σὺ ἐμέ
「康健的人用不著醫生,有病的人才用得著,不是嗎?你呢,我隨時想見就能見到你,你也隨時能見到我。」
"The healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are ill? You I find whenever I wish, and you me."

Καὶ ἐὰν μὴ ἐγώ σε παρακαλέσω , ἄλλοι σε ἀδελφοὶ πα ρακαλοῦσι καὶ ἄλλοι πατέρες
「我若不勸勉你,還有別的弟兄勸勉你,別的教父勸勉你。」
"And if I do not exhort you, other brothers exhort you and other fathers."

Οὗτος δέ ἐστιν ἐκδεδομένος τῷ διαβόλῳ διὰ τῶν κοσμικῶν πραγμάτων , καὶ βραχεῖαν ἀναπνεύσας ὥραν , ὡς δραπετεύσας οἰκέτης δεσπότην , παρεγένετο ὠφεληθῆναι·
「但這人因世俗的事務已被交給了魔鬼,他只得了片刻的喘息,像個從主人那裡逃出來的家僕,前來求得幫助;
"But this man has been given over to the devil through worldly affairs, and having breathed for a brief hour, like a runaway servant from his master, he has come to be helped;

ἄτοπον οὖν ἦν καταλείψαντας αὐτὸν σοὶ προσδιατρίψαι , σοῦ ἀδιαλείπτως τῇ σωτηρίᾳ σχολά ζοντος
因此若撇下他而與你消磨時光,就不合宜了,何況你已不住地專心於自己的救恩。」
it would have been improper, then, to leave him and to spend the time with you, while you give yourself unceasingly to your salvation."

Παρακαλέσας οὖν αὐτὸν εὔξασθαι ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ ἐπληροφορήθην ὅτι ἀνὴρ ἦν πνευματικός
於是我懇求他為我禱告,我便深信他確是一位屬靈人。
Having entreated him, then, to pray on my behalf, I was fully assured that he was a spiritual man.

Τότε χαριεν τιζόμενος τῇ δεξιᾷ χειρὶ εἰς τὴν ἀριστεράν μου σιαγόνα ἠρέμα κοσσίσας , λέγει μοι·

Then, jesting, with his right hand having gently cuffed my left cheek, he says to me:

Πολλαί σε μένουσι θλίψεις , καὶ πολλὰ ἐπολεμήθης ἐξελθεῖν τῆς ἐρήμου·
「許多患難正等著你,你也屢屢受攻擊,要叫你離開曠野;
"Many tribulations await you, and you have been much warred upon to go out of the desert;

καὶ ἐδειλάνθης καὶ ὑπερέθου·
你已變得膽怯,便一再推延了。」
and you have grown faint-hearted and have put it off."

Εὐλαβεῖς δέ σοι προφάσεις καὶ εὐλόγους φέρων ὁ δαίμων ἀναρριπίζει
「那魔鬼給你帶來一些敬虔而合理的藉口,藉此煽動這火。」
"The demon, bringing you pious and plausible pretexts, fans the flame."

Ὑπέθετο γάρ σοι καὶ τὴν τοῦ πατρός σου ἐπιθυμίαν , καὶ τὴν κατήχησιν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου καὶ τῆς ἀδελφῆς εἰς τὸν μονήρη βίον
「因他向你暗示了你對父親的思念,以及要把你弟弟和妹妹引入獨修生活的念頭。」
"For he has suggested to you both the longing for your father, and the catechizing of your brother and your sister unto the solitary life."

「因此你當在曠野裡堅忍持守,不要為這些緣故就想回你的本鄉去;
"Persevere, then, in the desert, and do not, for the sake of these things, wish to depart to your homeland;

ἱκανῶς , ηὐχαρίστησα τῷ θεῷ τὰς ἐλαυνούσας με προφάσεις ἠνυσμένας μαθών
我便大大感謝神,因我得知那些催逼我出去的藉口都已歸於無有了。
and abundantly I gave thanks to God, having learned that the pretexts driving me out had been brought to naught.

"Do you wish to become a bishop?" I said to him: "I am one."

「在哪裡呢?」我說:「在廚房、在酒舖、在飯桌、在瓦罐之上;
"Where?" I said: "Over the kitchens, the taverns, the tables, the jars;

ἐπισκοπῶ αὐτά , καὶ ἐὰνᾖ οἰνάριον ὄξινον ἀφορίζω αὐτό , τὸ δὲ χρη στὸν πίνω·
我監管這些,若有酸了的酒我就把它撇開,好的我就喝下;
I oversee them, and if there be sour wine I set it apart, but the good I drink;

ὁμοίως ἐπισκοπῶ καὶ τὴν χύτραν , καὶ ἐὰν λείπῃ ἅλαςἤ τι τῶν ἀρτυμάτων βάλλω καὶ ἀρτύω , καὶ οὕτως αὐτὴν ἐσθίω
我也照樣監管鍋子,若缺了鹽或缺了甚麼調味料,我就加進去調味,然後才吃。
likewise I oversee also the pot, and if salt or any of the seasonings be lacking I put it in and season it, and so I eat it.

Αὕτη μού ἐστιν ἡ ἐπισκοπή·
這就是我的『主教職分』;
This is my episcopate;

ἐχειροτόνησε γάρ με ἡ γαστριμαργία
因為按立我的,乃是貪食。」
for gluttony ordained me."

Λέγει μοι οὗτος μειδιάσας·
他微笑著對我說:
He says to me, smiling:

ἐπίσκοπος ἔχεις χειροτονηθῆναι καὶ πολλὰ καμεῖν καὶ θλιβῆναι·
「你要被按立為主教,要多多勞苦,多受患難;
"You are to be ordained bishop and to labour much and to be afflicted;

εἰ τοίνυν φεύγεις τὰς θλίψεις , μὴ ἐξέλθῃς τῆς ἐρήμου·
你若躲避患難,就不要離開曠野;
if then you flee tribulations, do not go out of the desert;

ἐν γὰρ τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἐπίσκοπόν σε οὐδεὶς ἔχει χειροτονῆσαι
因為在曠野裡,無人能按立你作主教。」
for in the desert no one can ordain you bishop."

Ἀναχωρήσας οὖν αὐτοῦ ἦλθον ἐπὶ τὴν ἔρημον εἰς τὸν τόπον μου τὸν συνήθη , αὐτὰ ταῦτα διηγησάμενος τοῖς μακαρίοις πατράσιν·
於是我從他那裡退下,回到曠野我素常所住之處,把這一切事都述說給那些蒙福的教父聽;
Having withdrawn from him, then, I came to the desert, to my accustomed place, having related these very things to the blessed fathers;

οἵτινες μετὰ δύο μῆνας πλεύσαντες ἦλθον καὶ συνέτυχον αὐτῷ
他們在兩個月後乘船前去,與他會了面。
who, two months later, having sailed, came and met with him.

For after three years I fell ill of an ailment of the spleen and stomach;

ἐκεῖθεν ἀπεστάλην ἐπὶ τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρειαν παρὰ τῶν ἀδελφῶν , ὕδρωπα μελετήσας
弟兄們便從那裡打發我往亞歷山大去,因我得了水腫病。
from there I was sent off by the brethren to Alexandria, having developed dropsy.

Ἀπὸ τῆς Ἀλεξανδρείας συμβουλεύσαντες οἱ ἰατροί , τῶν ἀέρων ἕνεκεν , καταλαμβάνειν με τὴν Παλαιστίνην·
醫生們從亞歷山大勸我,為著空氣的緣故,當往巴勒斯坦去;
From Alexandria, the physicians having advised, for the sake of the air, that I should make for Palestine;

ἔχει γὰρ λεπτοὺς ἀέρας , ὡς πρὸς τὴν κρᾶσιν τὴν ἡμετέραν·
因為那裡空氣清淡,正合我們的體質;
for it has light airs, as suited to our constitution;

ἀπὸ τῆς Παλαιστίνης κατέλαβον τὴν Βιθυνίαν·
我又從巴勒斯坦前往庇推尼;
from Palestine I made for Bithynia;

καὶ ἐν ταύτῃ – οὐκ οἶδα πῶς , εἴτε ἐξ ἀνθρωπίνης σπουδῆς , εἴτε ἐξ εὐδοκίας τοῦ κρείττονος·
在那地方——我不知是怎樣,是出於人的籌劃,還是出於那至高者的美意;
and in this place—I know not how, whether from human endeavour, or from the good pleasure of the Higher One;

θεὸς ἂν εἰδείη –κατηξιώθην τῆς ὑπὲρ ἐμὲ χειροτονίας κοινωνήσας τῇ περιστάσει τῇ κατὰ τὸν μακάριον Ἰωάννην·
惟有神知道——我竟蒙賜得了那超過我所配得的按立,與那蒙福的約翰所說的境遇有分;
God may know—I was deemed worthy of the ordination beyond my deserts, having shared in the circumstance concerning the blessed John;

καὶ ἐπὶ ἕνδεκα μῆνας ἐν ζοφερῷ κελλίῳ κρυπτόμενος ἐμνήσθην τοῦ μακαρίου ἐκείνου , ὅτι ταῦτά μοι προειρήκει ἅπερ ὑπέστην
我在一間昏暗的小屋裡躲藏了十一個月,便想起那位蒙福的人,他早已向我預言了這些我所經歷的事。
and for eleven months hidden in a gloomy little cell I remembered that blessed man, that he had foretold me these things which I endured.

Καὶ τοῦτο δέ μοι διηγεῖτο ὡς ὀφείλων με διὰ τοῦ διηγήματος ἀγαγεῖν εἰς ὑπομονὴν τῆς ἐρήμου , ὅτι Τεσσαρακοντα οκτὼ ἔτη ἔχω ἐν τῇ κέλλῃ ταύτῃ·
他又把這事述說給我,意在藉著這敘述引我在曠野中堅忍持守,他說:「我在這單房裡已有四十八年了;
And this too he related to me, as one who ought through the narrative to bring me to perseverance in the desert, that: "I have forty-eight years in this cell;

οὐ γυναικὸς πρόσωπον εἶδον , οὐ νομίσματος ἰδέαν·
我未曾見過婦人的臉,也未曾見過錢幣的模樣;
I have not seen a woman's face, nor the form of a coin;

οὐκ ἐσθίοντα , οὐ πίνοντά με εἶδέ τις
無人見過我吃喝。」
no one has seen me eating or drinking."

Οὗτος καὶ τῇ δούλῃ τοῦ θεοῦ Ποιμενίῃ παραβα λούσῃ ἱστορίας χάριν οὐ συντετύχηκε μέν , ἐδήλωσε δὲ αὐτῇ τινὰ καὶ τῶν ἀπορρήτων
他也未曾與神的婢女波伊梅尼亞會面,她因觀光而路過此地,但他卻向她啟示了某些隱秘的事。
He also did not meet with the servant of God, Poemenia, who passed by for the sake of [seeing] sights, but he revealed to her certain things even of hidden matters.

Παρήγγειλε δὲ αὐτῇ κατ ερχομένῃ ἀπὸ Θηβαΐδος μὴ ἐκνεῦσαι εἰς τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρειαν , Ἐπεὶ πειρασμοῖς ἔχεις περιπεσεῖν
他並囑咐她,當她從底比德下行時,不可繞道往亞歷山大去,「因為你必要陷入試探。」
And he charged her, as she was going down from the Thebaid, not to turn aside to Alexandria, "Since you are bound to fall into temptations."

Ἡ δὲ παραλογισαμένη ἢ ἐπιλαθομένη ἐξένευσεν ἐπὶ τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρειαν ἱστορῆσαι τὴν πόλιν
她卻或因思慮失算,或因遺忘,就繞道往亞歷山大去,要觀看那城。
But she, having miscalculated or forgotten, turned aside to Alexandria to see the city.

And along the way, near the city of Nicius, her boats put in for the sake of rest.

Her servants, then, having gone out, out of some disorderliness joined in a fight with the local inhabitants, men reckless and desperate.

Concerning Posidonius. The things concerning Posidonius the Theban are many and hard to relate—how gentle he was and how exceedingly ascetic, and how great a guilelessness he had within himself—I do not know if I have met with anyone like him.

For I lived together with this man for one year in Bethlehem, when he had settled beyond Poemenium, and I observed many of his virtues;

ἐν οἷς μοι αὐτὸς διηγεῖτο μιᾶς τῶν ἡμερῶν ὅτιπερ Εἰς τὸν Πορφυρίτην τόπον οἰκήσας ἔτος ἓν ἀνθρώπῳ οὐ συντετύχηκα ὅλῳ τῷ ἔτει , οὐχ ὁμιλίας ἀκήκοα , οὐκ ἄρτου ἡψάμην·
其中有一日他親自對我述說:「我曾在斑岩之地住了一年,整整一年我未曾遇見一個人,未曾聽過一句談話,未曾沾過一口餅;
among which he himself related to me one of the days that: "Having dwelt one year in the Porphyrite place, for the whole year I met with no man, I heard no conversation, I touched no bread;

ἀλλ' ἢ βρα χέσι φοινικίοις διεγενόμην καὶ εἴ που βοτάνας εὗρον ἀγρίας
我只靠著少許小棗子維生,也採食隨處所尋得的野菜。」
but I sustained myself on a few small dates, and wherever I found wild herbs."

Ἐν οἷς ποτὲ ἐκλειπόντων μου τῶν βρωμάτων , ἐξῆλθον τοῦ σπηλαίου ἐπὶ τὸ ἐλθεῖν εἰς τὴν οἰκουμένην
「有一次我的糧食斷絕了,我便走出洞穴,要前往有人煙之地。」
"Among which once, when my provisions had failed me, I went out of the cave to come into the inhabited world."

Καὶ περιπατήσας διὰ πάσης τῆς ἡμέρας μόλις ἀπέσχον τοῦ σπηλαίου σημεῖα δύο
「我走了一整天,卻只勉強離開洞穴約兩英里。」
"And having walked the whole day, I scarcely got two miles away from the cave."

Περιβλεψάμενος οὖν ὁρῶ ἱππέα στρα τιώτου ἔχοντα σχῆμα , τιαρηφόρον κράνος ἔχοντα ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς·
「我四下觀望,就看見一個騎馬的人,樣式像個兵丁,頭上戴著一頂頭巾形的盔;
"Looking about, then, I see a horseman having the appearance of a soldier, having on his head a turban-shaped helmet;

καὶ προσδοκήσας αὐτὸν εἶναι στρατιώτην ὥρμησα ἕως τοῦ σπηλαίου , καὶ εὗρον κάρταλον σταφυλῶν καὶ συκῶν νεαροτμήτων·
我以為他是個兵丁,便急忙趕回洞穴,卻發現一籃葡萄和新鮮摘下的無花果;
and expecting him to be a soldier, I hurried back as far as the cave, and I found a basket of grapes and freshly-cut figs;

ὃν λαβὼν καὶ περιχαρὴς γενόμενος εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ σπήλαιον , ἐπὶ μῆνας δύο ἔχων ἐκεῖνα τὰ βρώματα παραμυθίαν
我拿了這些,滿心歡喜,就進了洞穴,靠著這些食物作慰藉,足足度過了兩個月。」
which having taken, and having become exceedingly glad, I entered into the cave, having those provisions for two months as a comfort."

Τοῦτο δὲ πεποίηκε τὸ θαῦμα ἐν Βηθλεέμ·

And this miracle he performed in Bethlehem:

μέλλειν γεννᾶν ἐδυστόκει , τοῦ πνεύματος συντρίβοντος αὐτήν
有一個婦人臨產,難產不下,因有邪靈折磨她。
[a woman] about to give birth was in hard travail, the [evil] spirit racking her.

Τῆς γυναικὸς οὖν δαιμονιζομένης ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς ἐπέστη καὶ παρεκάλει τὸν ἅγιον ἐκεῖνον παρα γενέσθαι
那婦人既被鬼附,她的丈夫便前來懇求那位聖人前去。
The woman, then, being demon-possessed, her husband came and entreated that holy man to come.
1:1109⧉ ⤴︎
Εἰσελθόντων οὖν ἡμῶν ἅμα εὔξασθαι , στὰς καὶ προσευξάμενος μετὰ δευτέραν γονυκλισίαν ἐξέβαλε τὸ πνεῦμα
我們一同進去禱告時,他便站著禱告,第二次屈膝之後,就把那靈趕了出去。
When we had gone in together to pray, then, he stood and prayed, and after the second bending of the knee he cast out the spirit.

Εὔξασθε , ἄρτι γὰρ ἐξελαύνει τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον·
「你們禱告吧,因那污靈這就要被趕出去了;
"Pray, for the unclean spirit is just now being driven out;

σημεῖον δέ τι ἔχει ὑπάρξαι ἵνα πληροφορηθῶμεν
並且必有一個記號顯出,叫我們得以確信。」
and there is to be a certain sign, that we may be assured."

Ἐξερχόμενος οὖν ὁ δαίμων ἀπὸ θεμελίου τὸν τοῖχον τῆς αὐλῆς ὅλον ἔβαλε κάτω
那鬼出去時,就把院子的整堵牆從根基處推倒。
As the demon was going out, then, it threw down the whole wall of the courtyard from its foundation.

Ἦν δὲ τὸ γύναιον ἑξαετίαν μὴ λαλῆσαν·
那婦人已有六年不能說話了;
Now the little woman had not spoken for six years;

μετὰ οὖν τὸ ἐξελθεῖν τὸν δαίμονα ἔτεκε καὶ ἐλάλησεν
那鬼出去之後,她便生產,並且開口說話。
after the demon had gone out, then, she gave birth and spoke.

Τοῦ ἀνδρὸς τούτου καὶ προφητείαν ἔγνων ταύτην·
論到這人,我也得知了這項預言:
Of this man I came to know also this prophecy:

Ἱερώνυμός τις πρεσβύτερος ᾤκει εἰς τοὺς τόπους ἐκεί νους , ἀρετῇ λόγων ῥωμαϊκῶν κεκοσμημένος καὶ εὐφυίᾳ·
有一位名叫耶柔米的長老住在那些地方,他以拉丁文辭的造詣和天賦的才華著稱;
A certain presbyter Jerome dwelt in those places, adorned with the virtue of Latin eloquence and with natural ability;

τοσαύτην δὲ εἶχε βασκανίαν ὡς ὑπὸ ταύτης καλύπτεσθαι τῶν λόγων τὴν ἀρετήν
然而他懷有極深的嫉妒,以致他文辭的美德都被這嫉妒所遮蔽了。
but he had such envy that by it the virtue of his eloquence was overshadowed.

Συγχρονίσας οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Ποσει δώνιος ἡμέρας πλείους λέγει μοι πρὸς τὸ οὖς ὅτιἩ μὲν ἐλευθέρα Παῦλα , ἡ φροντίζουσα αὐτοῦ , προτελευτήσει , ἀπαλ λαγεῖσα αὐτοῦ τῆς βασκανίας , ὡς οἶμαι
波西多紐與他相處多日之後,便附耳對我說:「那照顧他的自由人保拉,依我看必要先死,得以脫離他的嫉妒。」
Having spent many days in his company, then, Posidonius says to me in my ear that: "The free-born Paula, who cares for him, will die first, set free from his envy, as I think."

Χάριν δὲ τούτου τοῦ ἀνδρὸς οὐ μὴ οἰκήσει ἅγιος ἀνὴρ εἰς τοὺς τόπους τούτους , ἀλλὰ φθάσει αὐτοῦ ὁ φθόνος καὶ μέχρι τοῦ ἰδίου ἀδελφοῦ
「並且因這人的緣故,必無聖潔之人肯住在這些地方,他的妒嫉甚至要殃及他自己的弟兄。」
"And on account of this man no holy man will dwell in these places, but his jealousy will reach even to his own brother."

這事後來果真應驗了。
Among which the thing actually came to pass.

Καὶ γὰρ καὶ Ὀξυπερέντιον τὸν μακάριον ἤλασε τὸν Ἰταλόν , καὶ Πέτρον ἄλλον τινὰ Αἰγύπτιον , καὶ Συμεῶνα , θαυμασίους ἄνδρας , οὓς τέως ἐγὼ ἐπεσημηνάμην
因他果然趕走了蒙福的義大利人歐克西培倫提烏,又趕走了另一位埃及人彼得,並趕走了西默盎,都是可欽佩的人,是我順帶記下的。
For indeed he drove out the blessed Oxyperentius the Italian, and another, a certain Peter the Egyptian, and Symeon, admirable men, whom I have meanwhile noted.

Οὗτός μοι διηγεῖτο ὁ Ποσει δώνιος ὡς ἄρτου πεῖραν μὴ ἔχων ἀπὸ ἔτους τεσσαρακοστοῦ , μήτε μὴν μνησικακήσας τινὶ μέχρι ἡμισείας ἡμέρας
這位波西多紐對我述說,他自四十歲起就未曾嚐過一口餅,也從未對任何人懷恨過哪怕半天之久。
This Posidonius related to me that he had not had a taste of bread since his fortieth year, nor indeed bore any grudge against anyone for so much as half a day.

論撒拉皮翁。另有一位撒拉皮翁,綽號「披亞麻布的」,因為除了一塊亞麻單布外,他從不在身上裹別的;
Concerning Serapion. There was another certain Serapion, surnamed the Sindonite, for except for a linen sheet he never wrapped anything about himself;

ὃς πολλὴν ἐξήσκησεν ἀκτημοσύνην , εὐγράμματος δὲ ὢν ἀπεστήθιζε πάσας τὰς γραφάς·
他操練極深的清貧,因他通曉文字,便把全部聖經都背誦下來;
who practised great poverty, and being well-lettered he had committed to memory all the Scriptures;

καὶ ἀπὸ πολλῆς ἀκτη μοσύνης καὶ μελέτης γραφῶν οὐδὲ ἠρεμῆσαι ἴσχυσεν ἐν κελ λίῳ , μὴ περισπώμενος ὕλῃ , ἀλλὰ περιερχόμενος τὴν οἰκου μένην ταύτην κατώρθωσε τὴν ἀρετήν·
因著極深的清貧和對聖經的勤習,他甚至無法安居於單房之中,倒不是被物質的事所纏累,而是周遊這有人煙的世界,藉此成全了德行;
and out of much poverty and study of the Scriptures he was not even able to remain quiet in a cell, not being distracted by material things, but going about this inhabited world he perfected virtue;

ταύτης γὰρ ἐγεγόνει καὶ τῆς φύσεως·
因為這也是他本性所傾向的;
for he was of this nature also;

διαφοραὶ γάρ εἰσιν φύσεων , οὐκ οὐσιῶν
因為人的本性各有不同,本質卻無分別。
for there are differences of natures, not of essences.

Καὶ σφραγίσας τὰ νομίσματα ἐφύλαττε παρ' ἑαυτῷ
他把那些錢幣封好,留在自己身邊。
And having sealed the coins, he kept them by himself.

Ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον οὖν παρέμεινε καὶ ἐδούλευσε τοῖς ἀγοράσασιν αὐτὸν μίμοις μέχρις οὗ καὶ χριστιανοὺς αὐτοὺς ἐποίησε καὶ τοῦ θεάτρου ἀπέστησε , παρεκτὸς ἄρτου καὶ ὕδατος οὐδενὸς λαμβάνων , οὐδὲ ἡσυχάζων τῷ στόματι ἀπὸ μελέτης γραφῶν
他就這樣留下來服事那些買了他的伶人,直到他使他們成了基督徒,並使他們脫離了戲場,期間除了餅和水以外他甚麼都不吃,口中也不停止誦習聖經。
To such an extent, then, he remained and served the mimes who had bought him, until he made them Christians and removed them from the theatre, taking nothing except bread and water, nor giving his mouth rest from the study of the Scriptures.

Τῷ μακρῷ χρόνῳ πρῶτος κατε νύγη ὁ ἀνήρ , εἶτα ἡ μιμάς , εἶτα ὁ σύμπας οἶκος αὐτῶν
經過長久的時日,那男伶最先良心受感動,接著是那女伶,然後是他們全家。
In the long course of time the man was first pricked in conscience, then the mime-woman, then their whole household.

Ἐλέγετο δὲ ὅτι εἰς ὅσον αὐτὸν ἠγνόουν ἀμφοτέρων ἔνιπτε τοὺς πόδας
據說,在他們還不認得他的時候,他常給他們二人洗腳。
And it was said that, as long as they were ignorant of him, he washed the feet of both.

Ἀμφότεροι οὖν βαπτισθέντες ἀπέστησαν τοῦ θεατρίζειν , καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν σεμνὸν καὶ θεοσεβῆ ἐλάσαντες βίον σφόδρα ᾐδοῦντο τὸν ἄνδρα καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ·
他們二人受了洗,就不再在戲場演戲,並進入了端莊敬畏神的生活,他們極其敬重這人,對他說:
Both, then, having been baptized, ceased from acting in the theatre, and having driven on to the sober and God-fearing life, they greatly revered the man and say to him:

Ἐπειδὴ ἐνήργησεν ὁ θεὸς καὶ ἐσώθη ὑμῶν ἡ ψυχή , εἴπω ὑμῖν τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ δράματος·
「既然神已動工,使你們的靈魂得救,就讓我把這齣戲的奧秘告訴你們;
"Since God has wrought and your soul has been saved, let us tell you the mystery of the drama;

ἐγὼ κατοικτειρήσας ὑμῶν τὴν ψυχήν , ἐλεύθερος ὢν ἀσκητὴς τῷ γένει Αἰγύπτιος , τούτου χάριν πέπρακα ἐμαυτὸν ἵνα σώσω ὑμᾶς
我本是自由人,是個埃及籍的苦修者,因憐恤你們的靈魂,便為這緣故賣了自己,好叫我能救你們。」
I, taking pity on your soul, being a free ascetic by birth an Egyptian, for this cause sold myself that I might save you."

Ἐπειδὴ δὲ τοῦτο πε ποίηκεν ὁ θεὸς καὶ ἐσώθη ὑμῶν ἡ ψυχὴ διὰ τῆς ἐμῆς τα πεινώσεως , λάβετε ὑμῶν τὸν χρουσὸν ἵνα ἀπέλθω καὶ ἄλλοις βοηθήσω
「既然神已成就了這事,你們的靈魂也藉著我的卑微得了拯救,你們就收回你們的金子吧,好讓我去幫助別人。」
"And since God has done this and your soul has been saved through my humbling, take back your gold that I may go and help others."

Οἱ δὲ πολλὰ παρακαλέσαντες αὐτὸν καὶ διαβε βαιωσάμενοι ὅτι Ὡς πατέρα σε ἕξομεν καὶ δεσπότην , μόνον μεῖνον μεθ' ἡμῶν·
他們卻再三懇求他,並堅定地向他保證說:「我們必待你如父如主,只求你與我們同住;
But they, having entreated him much and firmly assured him that: "We will have you as a father and master, only remain with us;

ἀλλὰ κἂν δι' ἐνιαυτοῦ ἡμᾶς ὅρα
至少求你一年來看我們一次。」
but at least visit us once a year."

Οὗτος ταῖς συνεχέσιν ἀποδημίαις κατήντησεν εἰς Ἑλ λάδα , καὶ διατρίψας τριῶν ἡμερῶν ἐν Ἀθήναις οὐκ ἠξιώθη παρά τινος ἄρτου·
這人因不斷的遊行,來到了希臘,在雅典停留了三天,卻沒有一個人肯施他一塊餅;
This man, by his continual journeys, arrived in Greece, and having spent three days in Athens he was not deemed worthy of bread by anyone;

οὔτε γὰρ κέρμα ἐβάσταζεν , οὐ πήραν , οὐ μηλωτήν , οὐδὲν τῶν τοιούτων
因為他既不帶錢幣,也不帶口袋、不帶皮袋,也不帶任何這類的東西。
for he carried neither small coin, nor wallet, nor goatskin cloak, nor anything of such things.

Τετάρτης οὖν ἐπιλαβομένης ἡμέρας σφόδρα ἐπείνασε·
到了第四天,他餓得厲害;
When the fourth day, then, had come upon him, he was exceedingly hungry;

δεινὴ γὰρ ἡ ἀκούσιος πεῖνα , συνή γορον ἔχουσα τὴν ἀπιστίαν
因為非自願的飢餓是可怕的,它以不信為自己的辯護者。
for involuntary hunger is dreadful, having unbelief as its advocate.

Καὶ στὰς ἐπὶ γεωλόφου τῆς πόλεως , ἔνθα οἱ ἐν τέλει ἦσαν συναθροιζόμενοι τῆς πόλεως , ἤρξατο ἀποδύρεσθαι βίαν μετὰ κρότου χειρῶν καὶ κράζειν·
他便站在城中的一座小丘上,就是城中的官長們聚集之處,開始拍手哀號,高聲喊叫:
And standing on a hillock of the city, where the magistrates of the city were gathering, he began to bewail with clapping of hands and to cry out:

Ἄνδρες Ἀθηναῖοι , βοηθεῖτε
「雅典人哪,救命啊!」
"Men of Athens, help!"

προσδραμόντες ἅπαντες , τριβωνοφόροι τε καὶ βιρροφόροι , λέγουσιν αὐτῷ·
眾人都跑來,無論是穿粗布短衣的,還是穿斗篷的,都對他說:
all running up, both those wearing the threadbare cloak and those wearing the cloak, say to him:

Τί ἔχεις; Καὶ πόθεν εἶ; Καὶ τί πάσχεις; Λέγει αὐτοῖς·
「你有甚麼難處?你是從哪裡來的?你受了甚麼苦?」他對他們說:
"What ails you? And whence are you? And what do you suffer?" He says to them:

Τῷ μὲν γένει εἰμὶ Αἰγύπτιος·
「我生來是個埃及人;
"By birth I am an Egyptian;
1:1147⧉ ⤴︎
ἀφ' οὗ δὲ τῆς ἀληθινῆς μου πατρίδος ἀπέστην τρισὶ δανεισταῖς περιέπεσα·
自從我離開了我真正的本鄉,便落入三個債主手中;
but since I departed from my true homeland I have fallen in with three creditors;
1:1148⧉ ⤴︎
καὶ οἱ μὲν δύο μου ἀπηλλάγησαν πληρωθέντες τὸ χρέος , οὐκ ἔχοντες ὃ ἐγκαλέσουσιν·
其中兩個已經償清了債、得了滿足,再無可控告我的;
and the two of them have been satisfied, the debt having been paid, having nothing of which to accuse me;
1:1149⧉ ⤴︎
ὁ δὲ εἷς μου οὐκ ἀπαλλάττεται
惟獨其中一個還未得脫離。」
but the one of them is not released."
1:1150⧉ ⤴︎
Φιλο πραγμονοῦντες οὖν ἐκεῖνοι τοὺς δανειστὰς ἵνα αὐτοὺς πλη ροφήσωσιν , ἠρώτων αὐτόν·
他們便細細詢問那些債主的事,想要使他們得著滿足,就問他:
Making careful inquiry, then, about the creditors, that they might satisfy them, they questioned him:
1:1151⧉ ⤴︎
Ποῦ εἰσί , καὶ τίνες εἰσί; Τίς ἐστιν ὁ ὀχλῶν σοι; δεῖξον ἡμῖν αὐτὸν ἵνα σοι βοηθήσωμεν
「他們在哪裡?他們是誰?那攪擾你的是誰?指給我們看,好叫我們幫助你。」
"Where are they, and who are they? Who is the one troubling you? Show him to us that we may help you."

Ὤχλησάν μοι ἐκ νεότητος φιλαρ γυρία καὶ γαστριμαργία καὶ πορνεία·
「從我幼年起,貪財、貪食和淫亂就攪擾我;
"From my youth there have troubled me love of money and gluttony and fornication;

τῶν δύο ἀπηλλάγην , φιλαργυρίας καὶ πορνείας·
其中兩樣我已得了釋放,就是貪財與淫亂;
from two I have been freed, from love of money and fornication;

γαστριμαργίας δὲ ἀπαλλαγῆναι οὐ δύναμαι
惟獨貪食,我卻不能得釋放。」
but from gluttony I am not able to be freed."
1:1155⧉ ⤴︎
Τετάρτην γὰρ ἔχω ἡμέραν μὴ φαγών , καὶ παραμένει μοι ὀχλοῦσα ἡ γαστὴρ καὶ ζητοῦσα τὸ σύνηθες χρέος οὗ ἄνευ ζῆσαι οὐ δύναμαι
「因我已有四天沒有吃東西,這肚腹仍舊攪擾我,索討那慣常的債,沒有它我就活不下去。」
"For this is the fourth day that I have not eaten, and the belly remains troubling me and seeking the customary debt, without which I cannot live."

Τότε τινὲς τῶν φιλοσόφων ὑπονοήσαντες εἶναι αὐτὸ σκηνήν , διδόασιν αὐτῷ νόμισμα·
於是有幾個哲學家疑心這是場戲,便給了他一枚錢幣;
Then some of the philosophers, suspecting it to be a piece of play-acting, give him a coin;
1:1157⧉ ⤴︎
καὶ δεξάμενος ἔθηκεν ἐν ἀρτοπωλείῳ , καὶ λαβὼν ἕνα ἄρτον ἀνεχώρησε παραχρῆμα ὁδεύσας τῆς πόλεως καὶ μηκέτι ὑποστρέψας εἰς αὐτήν
他接過後,便把它放在一家餅舖裡,只取了一個餅,立刻就退去,走出了那城,再也沒有回去。
and having received it he set it down at a baker's shop, and taking one loaf he withdrew at once, having journeyed out of the city and no longer returning to it.
1:1158⧉ ⤴︎
Τότε ἔγνωσαν οἱ φιλόσοφοι ὅτι ἀληθῶς ἐνάρετος ἦν , καὶ δόντες τῷ ἀρτο πώλῃ τὴν τιμὴν τοῦ ἄρτου ἔλαβον τὸ νόμισμα
那些哲學家這才知道他真是有德行的人,便把那餅的價銀給了餅舖,收回了那枚錢幣。
Then the philosophers knew that he was truly virtuous, and having given the baker the price of the loaf they took back the coin.

水手們以為他要麼帶了行李上船,要麼身懷金子作盤纏,便毫不查問地接待了他,各人都以為是別人收下了他的行李。
the sailors, supposing that he had either brought provisions on board or possessed in gold the means for his expenses, received him without question, each supposing that another had taken charge of his baggage.

When they had set sail and were five hundred furlongs from Alexandria, the passengers began at sunset to eat, the sailors having eaten first.

But they would not gladly have let him go even for a hundred gold pieces, but pursued their aim.

Having met with him, then, and having been helped by him—for he was a man polished both in character and in knowledge—learning from him who else there might be, ascetic man or woman, he came to know of a certain virgin living in stillness who met with no one.

But Evagrius, fearing God and respecting his own conscience, and setting before his eyes the greatness of the disgrace and the malicious gloating of the heretics, prayed, beseeching God that he might be hindered by Him.

Not long after, his prayer having succeeded before the deed itself was attempted, there came upon him an angelic vision in the form of soldiers of the prefect, who seized him and led him as into a tribunal and cast him into what is called custody, binding his neck and hands with iron collars and chains; and those who had come upon him did not, of course, state the charge.

While he was in great anguish, another trial being conducted and others being tortured on a charge, he remained in deep distress.

Μετασχηματίζεται δὲ ὁ ἄγγελος ὁ τὴν ὀπτασίαν παρασχὼν εἰς παρουσίαν γνη σίου φίλου , καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ δεδεμένῳ μεταξὺ σειρᾶς τεσ σαράκοντα καταδίκων·
於是那賜下異象的天使,變作一位真摯朋友的模樣,對他這個被鎖在四十名死囚之列中的人說:
Then the angel who had granted the vision transformed himself into the appearance of a genuine friend, and said to him—bound as he was among a chain of forty condemned men:

「說實話我並不知道,只疑心是某位曾任府尹的人,因無端的妒忌而告了我。」
"In truth I do not know, but I suspect that so-and-so, a former prefect, has informed against me, smitten with senseless jealousy."

Εἰ ἀκούεις τοῦ φίλου σου , οὐ συμφέρει σοι ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ διάγειν
「你若肯聽你朋友的話,留在這城裡對你並無好處。」
"If you will listen to your friend, it is not good for you to remain in this city."

Ἐὰν ὁ θεός με ταύτης τῆς συμφορᾶς ἀπαλλάξῃ καὶ ἴδῃς με ἐν Κωνσταντινουπόλει , γνῶθι ὅτι εὐλόγως ὑφίσταμαι ταύτην τὴν τιμωρίαν
「神若救我脫離這場災難,而你日後在君士坦丁堡再見到我,就當知道我是該受這刑罰的。」
"If God delivers me from this calamity, and you see me in Constantinople, know that I am rightly undergoing this punishment."

Φέρω τὸ εὐαγ γέλιον καὶ ὄμοσόν μοι ἐν αὐτῷ ὅτι ἀναχωρεῖς τῆς πόλεως ταύτης καὶ φροντίζεις σου τῆς ψυχῆς , καὶ ἀπαλλάττω σε τῆς ἀνάγκης ταύτης
「我把福音書帶來了,你按著它向我起誓,必要離開這城、顧念你自己的靈魂,我就救你脫離這患難。」
"I am bringing the Gospel; swear to me upon it that you will withdraw from this city and take thought for your soul, and I will release you from this distress."

Ἤνεγκεν οὖν τὸ εὐαγ γέλιον καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτῷ κατὰ τοῦ εὐαγγελίου ὅτι Παρ εκτὸς μιᾶς ἡμέρας , ἵνα φθάσω ἐμβαλεῖν εἰς τὸ πλοῖον τὰ ἱμάτιά μου , οὐ μὴ παραμείνω
他便取了福音書來,他就按著福音書向他起誓說:「除了一天之外——好讓我來得及把衣物搬上船——我絕不再逗留。」
So he brought the Gospel, and he swore to him upon the Gospel: "Except for one single day, that I may manage to put my clothes aboard the ship, I will not stay."

Τοῦ ὅρκου οὖν προ χωρήσαντος ἐπανῆλθεν ἀπὸ τῆς ἐκστάσεως τῆς γενομένης αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ νυκτί·
起完這誓,他就從夜間臨到他的恍惚(出神)狀態中醒了過來;
When the oath had been completed, he came out of the trance that had come upon him in the night;

καὶ ἀναστὰς ἐλογίσατο ὅτι Εἰ καὶ ἐν ἐκστάσει γέγονεν ὁ ὅρκος ἀλλ' ὅμως ὤμοσα
起來後他思想說:「這誓雖是在恍惚中所起的,但我畢竟是起了誓。」
and rising he reasoned thus: "Even if the oath was made in a trance, nevertheless I have sworn."

Βα λὼν οὖν πάντα τὰ αὐτοῦ εἰς πλοῖον ἔρχεται εἰς Ἱεροσό λυμα
於是他把一切財物都搬上船,往耶路撒冷去了。
So, putting all his belongings on a ship, he came to Jerusalem.

And there he was welcomed by the blessed Melania the Roman.

Πάλιν δὲ τοῦ διαβόλου σκληρύναντος αὐτοῦ τὴν καρδίαν καθάπερ τοῦ Φαραώ , ὡς νέῳ καὶ σφριγῶντι τὴν ἡλικίαν γέγονεν ἐνδυασμός τις καὶ ἐδιψύχησε μηδενὶ μηδὲν εἰρηκώς , κἀκεῖσε πάλιν ἐξαλλάσσων τοῖς ἱματίοις καὶ ἐν τῇ διαλέκτῳ ἐκάρου αὐτὸν ἡ κενοδοξία
魔鬼卻又硬了他的心,如同從前硬了法老的心一樣;他年輕力壯,便起了一種兩可之心,三心二意,誰也不告訴,在那裡又換回了華服與言談,虛榮又麻醉了他。
But again the devil hardened his heart, as he had Pharaoh's; and being young and in the prime of his vigour, a kind of double-mindedness came over him: he wavered, saying nothing to anyone, and there too he changed back to fine clothes and to discourse, and vainglory was lulling him.

Ὁ δὲ ἐμπο διστὴς τῆς πάντων ἡμῶν ἀπωλείας θεὸς ἐνέβαλεν αὐτὸν εἰς περίστασιν πυρετοῦ , κἀκεῖθεν εἰς νόσον μακρὰν ἑξαμη νιαίῳ χρόνῳ ταριχεύσας αὐτοῦ τὸ σαρκίον , δι' οὗ ἐνε ποδίζετο
但神——攔阻我們眾人滅亡的那一位——使他陷入一場熱病,繼而轉成一場長達半年的久病,把他那可憐的肉身折磨得乾癟,藉此攔阻了他。
But God, the hinderer of the ruin of us all, cast him into a bout of fever, and from there into a long illness, for the space of six months wasting away his poor flesh, by which he was being checked.

Τῶν ἰατρῶν δὲ ἀπορούντων καὶ τρόπον θεραπείας μὴ εὑρισκόντων , λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ μακαρία Μελά νιον·
醫生們束手無策、找不出醫治的法子時,有福的梅蘭尼婭對他說:
When the physicians were at a loss and could find no method of healing, the blessed Melania said to him:

"Your protracted illness does not please me, my son."

「你且把心裡的事告訴我。」
"Tell me then what is in your mind."

Οὐκ ἔστι γὰρ ἀθεής σου ἡ νόσος αὕτη
「因為你這病並非與神無關。」
"For this illness of yours is not without God's hand."

Τότε ὡμολόγησεν αὐτῇ τὸ πρᾶγμα σύμπαν
於是他向她坦承了整件事。
Then he confessed to her the whole matter.
1:1232⧉ ⤴︎
καὶ εἰ καὶ ἁμαρτωλὴ τυγχάνω , προσεύχομαι ἵνα δοθῇ σοι κομίατος ζωῆς
她說:「縱然我是個罪人,我也要禱告,求賜你延續性命的寬限。」
And she said: "Even though I happen to be a sinner, I will pray that respite of life may be granted to you."

Ἐντὸς οὖν ὀλίγων ἡμερῶν ὑγίανε·
果然,不出幾天他就痊癒了;
And so within a few days he recovered;

καὶ ἀναστὰς παρ' αὐτῆς ἐκείνης μετημφιάσθη , καὶ ἐξέρχεται ἐκδημή σας εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῆς Νιτρίας τὸ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ
他起來後,便在她親手相助下換了裝束,動身離去,前往埃及的尼特里亞山。
and rising up, he changed his clothing at her own hands, and went away, departing for the mountain of Nitria in Egypt.

Ἐν ᾧ οἰκήσας δεύτερον ἔτος τὸ τρίτον εἰσβάλλει εἰς τὴν ἔρημον
他在那裡住了第二年,到第三年便深入曠野。
Having dwelt there a second year, in the third he plunged into the desert.

So, having lived fourteen years in the so-called Cells, he used to eat a pound of bread, and a pint of oil every three months—a man brought up from a most delicate, luxurious, and pampered life.

如此在十五年之內,他把心思潔淨到極處,便蒙賜下知識、智慧、和辨別諸靈的恩賜。
So within fifteen years, having purified his mind to the utmost, he was deemed worthy of the gift of knowledge and wisdom and discernment of spirits.

He therefore composed three sacred books for monks, called "Antirrhetic" (refutations), setting forth methods against the demons.

淫亂的鬼沉重地攻擊他,這是他自己向我們述說的;
The demon of fornication oppressed him grievously, as he himself related to us;

and for a whole night he stood naked in a well, it being winter, so that his very flesh froze stiff.

At another time again a spirit of blasphemy oppressed him;

他四十天不進屋簷下,這是他自己告訴我們的,以致他身上長出蜱蟲,如同無知的牲畜身上的一般。
and for forty days he did not come under a roof, as he himself told us, so that his body broke out with ticks like those of irrational animals.

Three demons in the guise of clerics once stood before him in a single day, disputing about the faith;

一個自稱亞流派,一個自稱歐諾米派,一個自稱亞波里拿留派;
and the one called himself an Arian, another a Eunomian, and another an Apollinarian;

καὶ τούτων περιεγένετο τῇ σοφίᾳ αὐτοῦ διὰ βραχέων λόγων
他憑著自己的智慧,三言兩語就勝過了他們。
and by his wisdom he overcame them in a few words.

Πάλιν μιᾶς τῶν ἡμερῶν τῆς κλειδὸς ἀπολομένης τῆς ἐκκλησίας , σφραγίσας τὸ πρόσωπον τοῦ ἡλωταρίου καὶ τῇ χειρὶ ὤσας ἤνοιξεν , ἐπικαλεσάμενος τὸν Χριστόν
又一日,教堂的鑰匙遺失了,他便在鎖頭上畫了十字的記號,用手一推,門就開了——這是他呼求基督之後成就的。
Again, one day the key of the church being lost, he sealed the face of the lock with the sign of the cross and pushed it with his hand, and it opened, when he had called upon Christ.

Τοσαῦτα ἐμαστιγώ θη οὗτος ὑπὸ δαιμόνων καὶ τοσαύτην ἔλαβε πεῖραν δαι μόνων ὧν ἀριθμὸς οὐκ ἔστιν
這人受眾鬼如此這般地鞭打,又經歷了多得無法計數的鬼魔試煉。
So greatly was this man scourged by demons, and so great experience of demons did he receive, of which there is no number.

To one of his own disciples he foretold the things that would befall him eighteen years later, prophesying everything to him in detail.

他常說:「自從我來到曠野,我就沒有碰過一片萵苣,也沒碰過別的青菜、果子、葡萄、肉類,或洗過澡。」
He used to say: "From the time I reached the desert I have touched no lettuce, nor any other green vegetable, nor fruit, nor grape, nor meat, nor bath."

αὐτοῖς τελευτᾷ , κοινωνήσας εἰς τὰ Ἐπιφάνια εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν
他在弟兄們中間離世,先在主顯節時於教堂領了聖餐。
He died among them, having communicated at the feast of Epiphany in the church.

Now near his death he related to us: "This is the third year that I have not been troubled by carnal desire,"—after so great a life, and labour, and toil, and unceasing prayer.

論皮歐爾。有一位埃及人皮歐爾,年少時撇下世俗,離開父家,又因熱心過甚而向神許願,從此再不見自己的任何親屬。
Concerning Pior. A certain Pior, an Egyptian, while young renounced the world and left his father's house, and gave his word to God, out of an excess of zeal, never again to see any of his own kin.

Μετὰ οὖν πεν τήκοντα ἔτη ἡ ἀδελφὴ τούτου γηράσασα καὶ ἀκούσασα ὅτι ζῇ , εἰς ἔκστασιν ἤλαυνεν ἐὰν μὴ αὐτὸν ἴδῃ
五十年後,他的姊妹年紀老邁,聽說他還活著,便心煩意亂,非見他一面不可。
After fifty years, his sister, having grown old and hearing that he was alive, was being driven to distraction unless she might see him.

Ἐλθεῖν δὲ μὴ δυναμένη ἐν τῇ πανερήμῳ , ἱκέτευσε τὸν κατὰ τὸν τόπον ἐπίσκοπον γράψαι τοῖς πατράσι τοῖς ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ , ἵνα αὐτὸν ἀποστείλωσι καὶ ἴδῃ αὐτόν
她既不能深入那荒漠,便央求當地的主教寫信給曠野中的眾教父,請他們打發他來,好讓她得見他。
Being unable to come into the far desert, she besought the local bishop to write to the fathers in the desert, that they might send him so that she might see him.

Βίας οὖν αὐτῷ πολλῆς περιτεθείσης ἔδοξεν ἄλλον ἕνα παραλαβεῖν καὶ ὑπά γειν
眾人極力相勸之下,他覺得最好帶上另一位同伴,便動身前去。
When much pressure had been brought to bear on him, he thought it best to take one other companion along and to go.

Καὶ ἐσήμανεν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τῆς ἀδελφῆς ὅτιὉ ἀδελφός σου Πίωρ παρεγένετο
有人到他姊妹家中報信說:「你的弟兄皮歐爾來了。」
And word was given in his sister's house: "Your brother Pior has arrived."

Στὰς οὖν ἔξω καὶ τοῦ ψόφου τῆς θύρας αἰσθόμενος ὅτι ἐξῆλθεν εἰς συνάν τησιν ἡ γραῦς , καμμύσας τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐβόησεν πρὸς αὐτήν·
他便站在外面,從門響聽出那老婦人已出來迎接,就閉上雙眼,向她喊著說:
So standing outside, and perceiving from the sound of the door that the old woman had come out to meet him, he shut his eyes and cried out to her:

Ἡ δεῖνα , ἡ δεῖνα , ἐγώ εἰμι Πίωρ ὁ ἀδελφός σου , ἐγώ εἰμι·
「某某、某某啊,我就是你的弟兄皮歐爾,正是我;
"So-and-so, so-and-so, I am Pior your brother, I am he;

Πληροφορηθεῖσα οὖν ἐκείνη καὶ δοξάσασα τὸν θεόν , καὶ μὴ πείσασα αὐτὸν εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς , ὑπέστρεψεν εἰς τὴν ἰδίαν οἰκίαν·
她既得了確據,便歸榮耀與神,雖未能勸他進她的家,仍回到自己的住處去了;
She therefore, being satisfied and glorifying God, and not having persuaded him to enter her house, returned to her own home;

ὁ δὲ εὐχὴν ποιήσας εἰς τὰς φλιὰς ἀπεδήμησε πάλιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ
他卻在門框邊作了禱告,便又動身回曠野去了。
while he, having said a prayer at the doorposts, departed again into the desert.

Τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοῦ τὸ θαῦμα φέρεται , ὅτι εἰς τὸν τόπον ὃν ᾤκησεν ὀρύξας εὗρεν ὕδωρ πικρότατον·
這也是傳述他的一件奇事:在他所住之地挖掘時,掘出了極苦的水;
This too is recounted as his marvel: that in the place where he dwelt, having dug, he found most bitter water;

καὶ μέχρις οὗ ἐτελεύτησεν ἐκεῖ παρέμεινε , στοιχήσας τῇ πικρότητι τοῦ ὕδατος ἵνα δείξῃ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ ὑπομονήν
他卻一直在那裡住到死,甘守那苦水,為要顯出他自己的忍耐。
and until he died he remained there, holding fast to the bitterness of the water, that he might display his own endurance.

Πολλοὶ οὖν τῶν μοναχῶν μετὰ τὸν θάνατον αὐτοῦ φιλονεικήσαντες μεῖναι ἐν τῷ κελλίῳ αὐτοῦ ἐνιαυτὸν οὐκ ἴσχυσαν ἐκτε λέσαι·
他死後,許多修士爭著要住進他的小室,卻沒有一個能住滿一年;
Many of the monks, after his death, contended to stay in his cell, but could not complete a single year;

ἔστι γὰρ φοβερὸς ὁ τόπος καὶ ἀπαράκλητος
因為那地方令人畏懼、毫無慰藉。
for the place is fearful and comfortless.

This man related to me: "While I was a young man in the monastery, we dug a very large well, twenty feet wide;

ἐν τούτῳ τρεῖς ἡμέρας ἐκχοίσαντες ἄνδρες ὀγδοήκοντα καὶ τὴν συνήθη καὶ ὕποπτον φλέβα παρελθόντες ὡς πῆχυν , οὐχ εὕρομεν ὕδωρ
在這井裡,八十個人挖了三天,越過了那通常、又看似有水的地脈約一肘深,仍找不到水。
in this, eighty men digging for three days, and having passed the usual and likely water-vein by about a cubit, we found no water.

Πάνυ οὖν λυπηθέντες ἐσκεπτόμεθα ἀναχωρῆσαι τοῦ ἔργου·
我們便大為憂愁,正商議要放棄這工程;
Being therefore greatly grieved, we were considering withdrawing from the work;

καὶ ἐπιστὰς ὁ Πίωρ ἐκ τῆς πανερήμου ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ἕκτῃ τοῦ καύματος , γέρων περιβεβλημένος τὴν μηλωτήν , ἠσπάσατο ἡμᾶς καὶ λέγει μετὰ τὸν ἀσπασμόν·
皮歐爾正從那深處的荒漠走來,恰在烈日當頭的午正(第六時辰),是個披著羊皮的老人;他向我們問安,問安之後就說:
and Pior, coming up from the deep desert at the very sixth hour of the burning heat—an old man wrapped in his sheepskin—greeted us, and said after the greeting:

Τί ἐμι κροψυχήσατε , ὀλιγόπιστοι; Ἑώρακα γὰρ ὑμᾶς ἀπὸ ἐχθὲς μικροψυχοῦντας
「你們這小信的人,為甚麼灰心呢?我從昨天起就看見你們喪膽了。」
"Why are you faint-hearted, O you of little faith? For I have seen you losing heart since yesterday."

Καὶ κατελθὼν ἐν τῇ κλίμακι εἰς τὸ ὄρυγμα τοῦ φρέατος ποιεῖ εὐχὴν σὺν αὐτοῖς·
他便沿著梯子下到井底,與他們一同禱告;
And going down the ladder into the pit of the well, he made a prayer with them;

καὶ λαβὼν τὸν ὄρυγα λέγει κατενεγκὼν τρίτην πληγήν·
又拿起鋤頭,掘下第三鋤時說:
and taking the mattock, on striking the third blow he said:

Ὁ θεὸς τῶν ἁγίων πατριαρχῶν , μὴ ἀχρειώσῃς τὸν πόνον τῶν δούλων σου , ἀλλὰ ἀπόστειλον αὐτοῖς τὴν τῶν ὑδάτων χρείαν
「眾聖先祖的神啊,求你不要使你僕人的勞苦歸於徒然,倒要把他們所需的水賜給他們。」
"O God of the holy patriarchs, do not render vain the toil of your servants, but send them the supply of waters they need."

Καὶ παραχρῆμα ἐξεπήδησεν ὕδωρ ὡς ῥαντισθῆναι ὅλους
水就立刻湧了出來,把眾人都濺濕了。
And at once water leaped forth so that all were sprinkled.

Πάλιν οὖν προσευξάμενος ᾤχετο
隨後他又禱告了一回,便起身離去。
Then again, having prayed, he went his way.

Ἀναγκαζόντων οὖν αὐτὸν φαγεῖν οὐκ ἠνέσχετο εἰπών·
他們勉強他吃些東西,他卻不肯,說:
When they pressed him to eat, he would not consent, saying:

δι' ἐκεῖνο δὲ οὐκ ἀπεστάλην
「因為我被差來,並不是為了這事。」
"for it was not for that purpose that I was sent."

Concerning Ephrem. The story of Ephrem the deacon of the church of the Edessenes you have surely heard;

γέγονε γὰρ εἷς τῶν μνημο νεύεσθαι ἀξίων παρὰ τῶν ὁσίων
因為他成了配得眾聖徒記念的人之一。
for he became one of those worthy to be remembered by the holy ones.

Οὗτος ἀξίως τὴν τοῦ πνεύματος ὁδὸν ἐξανύσας καὶ μὴ ἐκτραπεὶς τῆς εὐθείας κατηξιώθη χαρίσματος γνώσεως φυσικῆς , ἣν διαδέχεται θεολογία καὶ ἐσχάτη μακαριότης
這人配得地跑完了聖靈的道路,沒有偏離正直的路徑,便蒙賜下「本性的知識」之恩賜,繼之而來的乃是「論神之知」(神學)與至高的福樂。
This man, having worthily run the way of the Spirit and not having turned aside from the straight path, was deemed worthy of the gift of natural knowledge, which is succeeded by theology and the highest blessedness.

Τὸν ἥσυχον οὖν ἀεὶ ἐξ ασκήσας βίον καὶ τοὺς παρατυγχάνοντας οἰκοδομῶν ἐπὶ ἔτη ἱκανά , ἐς ὕστερον προῆλθε τῆς κέλλης ἐξ αἰτίας τοιᾶσδε·
他一向操練安靜的生活,多年來造就那些前來就教的人;末了,他卻因下面的緣故,從小室裡出來:
Having therefore always practised the quiet life, and edifying those who came to him for a good many years, at last he came forth from his cell for the following reason:

λιμοῦ καταλαβόντος μεγάλου τὴν Ἐδεσηνῶν πόλιν κατ οικτειρήσας πᾶσαν τὴν ἀγροικίαν διαφθειρομένην προσῆλθε τοῖς ἁδροῖς ἐν ὕλῃ καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς·
以德撒城遭遇大饑荒,他憐憫那滿地行將餓死的鄉民,便去見當地的富戶,對他們說:
a great famine having seized the city of the Edessenes, taking pity on the whole countryside which was perishing, he went to the wealthy in the district and said to them:

Τίνος ἕνεκεν οὐκ ἐλεᾶτε τὴν ἀνθρωπίνην φύσιν διαφθειρομένην , ἀλλὰ τὸν πλοῦτον ὑμῶν σήπετε εἰς κατάκριμα τῶν ψυχῶν ὑμῶν; Σκεψάμενοι οὖν λέγουσιν αὐτῷ ὅτι Οὐκ ἔχομεν τίνι πι στεύσομεν πρὸς τὸ διακονῆσαι τοῖς λιμώττουσι·
「你們為甚麼不憐憫這將要滅亡的人類,反讓你們的財富腐爛,定你們靈魂的罪呢?」他們思量後對他說:「我們沒有可信託的人來賑濟這些餓著的人;
"Why do you not have pity on human nature perishing, but let your wealth rot to the condemnation of your souls?" They considered and said to him: "We have no one we can trust to minister to the famished;

πάντες γὰρ καπηλεύουσι τὰ πράγματα
因為人人都把這事拿來牟利。」
for all turn the matter into profiteering."

Τί ὑμῖν δοκῶ ἐγώ; Εἶχε δὲ μεγάλην ὑπόληψιν παρὰ πᾶσιν , οὐ ψευδῶς ἀλλ' ἀληθῶς
「我在你們看來如何呢?」原來他在眾人中享有極高的聲望,這聲望不是虛的,乃是真的。
"What do I seem to you?" Now he had a great reputation among all, not falsely but truly.

Οὐκοῦν ἐμοί , φησίν , ἐμπιστεύσατε·
他便說:「那就把這事託付給我罷;
"Then," said he, "entrust it to me;

ὑμᾶς χειροτονῶ ἐμαυτὸν ξενοδόχον . Καὶ λαβὼν ἀργύ ρια καὶ διαφράξας τοὺς ἐμβόλους καὶ στήσας κλίνας ὡς τριακοσίας ἐνοσοκόμει τοὺς λιμώττοντας , τοὺς μὲν ἐκλιμ πάνοντας θάπτων , τοὺς δὲ ἐλπίδα ἔχοντας ζωῆς νοσοκο μῶν , καὶ ἁπλῶς πᾶσι τοῖς ἐπιχωριάζουσι τοῦ λιμοῦ ἕνεκεν ξενοδοχίαν καὶ ὑπηρεσίαν καθ' ἡμέραν παρέχων ἐκ τῶν χορηγουμένων αὐτῷ
我自己作你們的接待者(賑濟貧民的管家)。」他便接過銀錢,把柱廊隔開,安設了約三百張床位,照料那些餓著的人——把氣息將盡的安葬,把仍有生望的看護;總之,凡因饑荒而來的鄉民,他都從別人所供給他的款項中,每日供給他們住宿與服事。
I appoint myself your hospitaller (steward of the poor)." And taking the money, and partitioning off the porticoes, and setting up about three hundred beds, he nursed the famished—burying those who were failing, and tending those who had hope of life; and simply, to all the country-folk who had come because of the famine, he provided lodging and daily service out of what was supplied to him.

Πληρωθέντος οὖν τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ καὶ διαδεξαμένης τῆς εὐθηνίας καὶ πάντων οἴκοι πορευο μένων , μηκέτι ἔχων ὃ πράξει εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ κέλλαν καὶ ἐτελεύτησε μετὰ μῆνα , τοῦ θεοῦ παρασχόντος αὐτῷ τὴν ἀφορμὴν ταύτην στεφάνου τρόπον εἰς τὰ ἔσχατα αὐτοῦ
及至那一年過去,豐年隨之而來,眾人都各自回家了,他既再無事可作,便回到自己的小室,一個月後就去世了;神是把這事當作他臨終時的一頂冠冕,預備給了他。
When the year had passed and plenty had succeeded, and all were going home, having no further occupation he entered his own cell and died a month later, God having furnished him this occasion as a kind of crown at his end.

Κατέλιπε δὲ καὶ συντάγματα ὧν τὰ πλεῖστα σπουδῆς ἄξια
他也留下了著作,其中大部分都很值得研讀。
He also left writings, most of which are worthy of study.

Περὶ γυναικῶν ἁγίων . Ἀναγκαῖον δέ ἐστι καὶ γυναικῶν ἀνδρείων μνη μονεῦσαι ἐν τῷ βιβλίῳ , αἷς καὶ ὁ θεὸς τὰ ἴσα τοῖς ἀνδράσι τῶν ἄθλων ἐχαρίσατο , ὑπὲρ τοῦ μὴ προφασίζεσθαι αὐτὰς ὡς ἀσθενεστέρας οὔσας πρὸς κατόρθωσιν τῆς ἀρετῆς
論聖潔的婦女。也有必要在這書裡記念那些勇毅的婦女,神賜給她們的賞賜與男子的相等,免得她們藉口自己軟弱,無法成就美德。
Concerning holy women. It is necessary also to make mention in the book of courageous women, to whom God granted prizes equal to those of the men, that they might not make excuse as being weaker for the accomplishment of virtue.

Πολλὰς μὲν οὖν ἑώρακα , καὶ πολλαῖς ἀστείαις συντετύχηκα παρθένοις τε καὶ χήραις·
我見過許多這樣的婦女,也結識了不少高尚的女子,包括童貞女和寡婦;
Now I have seen many, and have met with many refined women, both virgins and widows;

[ ἐν αἷς καὶ Παύλῃ τῇ Ῥωμαίᾳ τῇ μητρὶ Τοξοτίου , γυναικὶ εἰς τὴν πνευματικὴν πολιτείαν ἀστειοτάτῃ·
其中也有羅馬人保拉,托克索提烏斯的母親,一位在屬靈生活上極為高尚的婦人;
[among whom was also Paula the Roman, the mother of Toxotius, a woman most refined in the spiritual life;

δυναμένην γὰρ αὐτὴν ὑπερπτῆναι πασῶν , εὐφυεστάτην οὖσαν , προσενεπόδισε τῇ ἑαυτοῦ βασκανίᾳ ἑλκύσας αὐτὴν πρὸς τὸν ἴδιον αὐτοῦ σκοπόν
她原本才情出眾,本可超越眾人,卻被〔耶柔米〕以自己的嫉妒攔阻,拉她去就自己的目的。
for though she was able to fly above all others, being most gifted, [Jerome] by his own jealousy hindered her, drawing her to his own purpose.

Her daughter, who is now in ascetic life, is named Eustochium, in Bethlehem;

我未曾與她相見,但據說她極為貞潔,帶領一個有五十名童貞女的團體。
with whom I have not happened to meet, but she is said to be exceedingly chaste, having a community of fifty virgins.

and Theodora, wife of the tribune, who pressed on to such poverty that, having received alms, she so died in the monastery of Hesychas by the sea.
