1:1
The prophetic word has joined the discerning hearer to the admirable counselor.
1:2
But I have given the book which I composed on the divine Apostle to your Holiness, not as to a discerning hearer, but as to a wise and true judge.
1:3
And just as goldsmiths bring gold to the touchstone, wishing to see whether it is unadulterated and pure, so I have brought my treatise to your Piety, wishing to know whether it is sound, or stands in need of some purification.
1:4
But though you read it and sent it back, you have made known to us nothing, O dear friend, of what has been said concerning it.
1:5
Your silence leads me to conjecture that you, the judge, having voted the contrary concerning it, did not wish to grieve me by disclosing it.
1:6
Dispel, then, my suspicion, and deign to make known to me your verdict concerning the treatise.
1:7
我以為,那些熱切相愛之人,並不能公正地評斷所愛之人辛勞所生的作品;
I do not think that those who love ardently judge rightly the birth-pangs of those they love;
1:8
for desire steals away justice.
1:9
因為做父親的,總以為自己容貌欠佳的孩子光彩照人;
For fathers think that their ill-favored children shine with beauty;
1:10
而做兒女的,同樣看不見自己父親的醜陋;
and children likewise do not see the unsightliness of their fathers;
1:11
so too does brother look upon brother, not as nature shows him, but as affection represents him.
1:12
Thus I have supposed that your Divinity has judged my words, affection having pronounced the verdict.
1:13
For truly greatest is the power of love, and it often overshadows not small faults of friends.
1:14
懷著這份豐盈,啊,我親愛的摯友,您以讚譽為我們的文字戴上花冠;
Possessing this wealth, O my dear friend, you have crowned our words with praises;
1:15
The divine Apostle forbids such comparisons.
1:16
For writing to the Romans he spoke thus:
1:17
'Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.'
1:18
And this he did very reasonably.
1:19
因為我們只能看見所行之事;
For we see only the deeds;
1:20
but the God of all things knows also the purpose of those who do them, and judging by this rather than by the deeds, He pronounces His verdict.
1:21
因此,祂必要為神聖使徒加冠——因他向猶太人成為猶太人,向律法之下的人成為律法之下的人,向沒有律法的人成為沒有律法的人;
Thus He will crown the divine Apostle for having become to the Jews as a Jew, and to those under the law as one under the law, and to those without law as one without law;
1:22
他並非擁抱阿諛者的生活方式,也未曾為自己圖謀那實為虧損的利益;
not embracing the life of a flatterer, nor contriving for himself a gain that would prove his loss;
1:23
but seeking benefit for those to whom he offered his teaching.
1:24
The divinely-inspired Paul, then, as I have already said, bids us await the divine tribunal.
1:25
In praising him, then, we should do nothing improper in answering your inquiry.
1:26
您在論證中假設有一位不虔敬的裁判者,他給予兩位為敬虔而爭戰的鬥士一個抉擇,使他們二者必擇其一:或向鬼魔獻祭,或投身入海;
You posited in your argument an impious judge, who had given to two contestants for piety a choice, that they should do one of two things: either sacrifice to demons, or cast themselves into the sea;
1:27
其中一人選擇了第二條路,並奮然投身躍入深淵;
and that the one seized upon the second course, and eagerly plunged headlong into the deep;
1:28
而另一人則二者皆不選擇;
while the other chose neither;
1:29
but, like the first, abhorred the worship of idols, yet did not deliver himself to the waves, but waited to suffer this by force at the hands of another.
1:30
Having thus set forth these things in your argument, you asked which of the two seemed to have acted better.
1:31
But I think that you too agree that the second is more admirable.
1:32
For no one, when so commanded, ought to remove himself, but should await either a natural or a violent death.
1:33
and again He bade them leave that city as well, and go to another.
1:34
神聖的使徒受此教導,逃脫了那族長的手,就連他逃脫的方式,也並未緘默不言;
Having been schooled in these things, the divine Apostle escaped the hands of the ethnarch, and did not even pass over in silence the manner of his flight;
1:35
but in his account he pointed to the basket and the wall and the window, boasting and taking pride in these things.
1:36
For the divine law made what seemed shameful into something honorable.
1:37
因此,他有時自稱法利賽人,有時又自稱羅馬人;
Thus at one time he called himself a Pharisee, and at another a Roman;
1:38
not out of fear of death, but contending according to the law.
1:39
因此,他預先得知猶太人的陰謀後,便向該撒上訴;
Thus he appealed to Caesar, having learned beforehand of the plots of the Jews;
1:40
and he sent his nephew to the tribune and disclosed what had been contrived, not out of desire for the present life, but in following the divine laws.
1:41
And this he taught us not only by words, but also by deeds.
1:42
For often he turned aside the bloodstained hands of the Jews.
1:43
And the great Peter too, the first of the apostles, when he had been released from his chains and had escaped the hands of Herod, came to the house of John who was surnamed Mark; and having relieved their anxiety by his presence, and having bidden them keep silence, he moved to another house, attempting by this change of place to escape notice all the more.
1:44
This form of philosophy we shall find also in the Old Testament.
1:45
For that much-praised Moses, having on the first day used his courage against the Egyptian, and then on the following day learning that the killing had become known, fled, and completed a journey of many days, and reached the land of Midian.
1:46
Thus too the great Elijah, having learned of the threats of Jezebel, did not deliver himself up to those who wished to kill him, but left the inhabited world and fled into the wilderness.
1:47
But if to flee the hands of those making war is a holy thing and pleasing to God, then surely far holier is it not to obey one who commands a man to become his own murderer.
1:48
For neither did the Lord yield when the devil said to Him:
1:49
'Cast Thyself down from here.'
1:50
'Pray that ye enter not into temptation.'
1:51
And He taught us also to say:
1:52
'And lead us not into temptation.'
1:53
若將論證中的海去除,讓我們設想:裁判者將一把劍交到每位鬥士手中,命令那不肯獻祭者親手砍下自己的頭;
And, removing the sea from the argument, let us say that the judge placed a sword in the hand of each of the contestants, and commanded the one who would not consent to sacrifice to cut off his own head;
1:54
who then, in his right mind, would have endured to stain his right hand with his own blood, and to become his own executioner, and to make his own hand his enemy, and to yield to a judge who commanded unlawfully? By far, therefore, is the second more admirable,
1:55
for good judgment adorns his readiness of will.
1:56
以上諸事,我是按所賜予我的知識程度而作判斷;
These things I have determined according to the measure of understanding given to me;
1:57
but He who clearly knows both the deeds and the intentions will show, on the day of His appearing, which of the two took the better counsel.
1:58
For after the all-holy feast, He also gave the thrice-longed-for rain, that He might render the festival free of despondency.
1:59
Having yoked us to cares and griefs after sin, God who created us has furnished us with occasions of comfort, by setting the divine feasts in our midst.
1:60
For the themes of these feasts both remind us of the God-given gifts, and foretell the complete release from things grievous.
1:61
Having now too enjoyed these blessings, and having been filled with gladness of heart, we address your Excellency, and render the due measure of friendship according to the custom of the feast.
1:62
Knowing, then, the disposition of your Reverence toward us, I make this known to you by letter.
1:63
For those who are well disposed toward certain persons rejoice, whenever they hear something gladdening concerning them.
1:64
I would have written long ago, had I long ago known of the death of the most magnificent consort of your Gravity.
1:65
即便如今我才修書,也並非欲以慰藉之言,平息您過度的沮喪;
And even now I write, not that I might lull to rest the excess of your despondency with words of consolation;
1:66
for to those who know how to practice philosophy, and who have examined the nature of this life, reason alone suffices to disperse the towering waves of grief.
1:67
And even if it calls to mind that long companionship, it reads the divine laws, and sets against the tears it occasions both the course of nature, and the ordinance of God, and the hope of the resurrection.
1:68
知曉此理,我便無需多言,只懇請您及時運用您的哲學修養;
Knowing this, I have no need of many words, but I exhort you to make timely use of your philosophy;
1:69
並將那位辭世者的死亡,視為一趟遙遠的遠行;
and to consider the death of the departed one a long journey abroad;
1:70
and to await the promise of God our Savior.
1:71
For he who promised the resurrection does not lie — or rather, he is the very fountain of truth.
1:72
I think it superfluous to offer spiritual incantations to your grief once again.
1:73
For the mere remembrance of the saving Passion suffices to quench even the most intense despondency.
1:74
For these things came to pass on behalf of the nature of mankind,
1:75
that it might effect the common resurrection and furnish us this hope made sure.
1:76
But if, even though the divine feasts offer every kind of consolation, you do not overcome the affliction of despondency, I entreat your Grace at least to read the clauses of the dowry-deed that come after its delivery, and to know clearly that the remembrance of death took precedence over the marriage.
1:77
因為深知本性難逃一死,並為尚存活者的平安著想,人便訂立所謂「擇一」的條款,且不因在婚姻結合之先便提及死亡而感到不安;
For knowing the mortality of our nature, and providing for the peace of those still living, people prescribe the clauses called "alternatives," and are not troubled to mention death before the conjugal union;
1:78
反倒明白宣告:「倘若丈夫先逝,則議定如此如此之事得以施行」;
but they declare expressly: "if the husband should die first, it has been agreed that such-and-such shall be done";
1:79
"but if the wife should undergo this fate, then such-and-such has been resolved."
1:80
Why then are we distressed at these things, having learned them before marriage — and, one might almost say, awaiting them every day? For it is altogether necessary that the union be dissolved, either by the husband dying first, or by the wife departing before him.
1:81
For this is the course that life runs.
1:82
Since, then, your Admirableness clearly knows both things divine and things human, let it disperse its despondency and await the common hope of the pious.
1:83
閣下的虔誠因那不公且未經審判便加諸於我們的判決,而感到不安與憂傷;
Your Piety is troubled and grieved on account of the sentence unjustly and without trial brought against us;
1:84
but this very thing consoles me.
1:85
For if I had been justly condemned, I would have grieved, as having furnished reasonable grounds to those who condemned me.
1:86
But since in this respect my conscience is clear, I rejoice and exult, and I look forward, through this injustice, to the remission of my other sins.
1:87
For Naboth too is not celebrated for any other virtue, but because he endured that unjust slaughter.
1:88
But I entreat you to pray to God that we may not be forsaken; and as for him who wages war, let him wage it.
1:89
因為我神的恩慈,已足以使我心滿懷一切的喜樂;
For the favor of my God suffices me for all gladness;
1:90
and as long as he himself is present with us, we hold all griefs in contempt, as mere toys.
1:91
Lawgivers have written the laws for the aid of those who are wronged, and those who embrace the life of the courts practice the art of rhetoric, so that they may advocate for those in need of just help.
1:92
既然你,摯友,兼得修辭的辭令與法律的學識,就當合宜地運用這技藝:以此技藝擊打行不義的人,並為那些被他們所擊打的人辯護,如同舉盾牌一般,將法律持於身前;
Since you, dear friend, have received a share of rhetorical eloquence and of the knowledge of the laws, use your art as is fitting: strike with your art those who commit injustice, and defend those struck by them, holding forth the laws before you like a shield;
1:93
and let no one who commits injustice enjoy your advocacy, even if he be your closest kin.
1:94
這些人當中有一個,就是那極其邪惡的亞伯拉梅斯;
One of these is Abrames, the most wicked of men;
1:95
who, having occupied a farm belonging to the Church for a long time, and then having taken certain persons into partnership in his wrongdoing, has dared to do what he has plainly confessed to.
1:96
我已將此事的經過、受害之人,以及至虔敬的副執事革隆丟一併與他遣去;
I have sent along with him also a record of what was done, and those who were wronged, and the most reverend Gerontius the subdeacon;
1:97
not that they may hand the wretch over to the laws, but that they may inform your Learning of what they have suffered, and, having moved you to share their grief, persuade you to compel the impious man to restore what was plundered.
1:98
The Maker and Governor of all things has revealed you as the most radiant luminary of the world, and has turned the empire from moonless darkness into clear noonday,
1:99
and you have appeared as the greatest comfort to those assailed for the sake of piety, and have shown forth the harbor of the apostolic faith, filling those who knew it with gladness, and freeing those who knew it not from the reefs.
1:100
But I especially sing the praises of the Giver of all good things, in that I have found a noble champion, one who by godly fear drives out human dread, who eagerly runs risk on behalf of the evangelic doctrines, and who gladly takes up the apostolic contests.
1:101
And now every tongue is moved to speak in praise of your Holiness.
1:102
For not only do the nurslings of piety admire the purity of your faith, but even the enemies of the truth greatly sing the praises of your manliness.
1:103
For falsehood yields before the lightning-flashes of truth.
1:104
I write these things now, knowing that the most honored and most reverend Hypatius the reader eagerly serves the biddings of your Holiness, and continually calls to mind your praiseworthy achievements, my lord.
1:105
And embracing your holy head, beloved of God, we entreat you to sustain us with your prayers, that we may live out at least what remains of our life according to the divine laws.
1:106
That greatest and adamantine tower — Job, I mean — that noble athlete of virtue, was not shaken even by the assault of frequent and manifold afflictions, but rather these showed him unmoved and unconquerable.
1:107
Yet after the end of his contests, the righteous Lawgiver made known the cause of his trials, speaking thus:
1:108
「你以為我如此對待你,除了要使你顯明為義人以外,還有別的緣故嗎?」我認為閣下的愛神之心也能聽入這番話語,因為您有能力承受各樣艱難處境的多重侵襲;
"Do you suppose that I have had dealings with you for any other purpose than that you might be shown to be righteous?" I take it that your Love-of-God likewise can hear these words, being able to bear many and various assaults of grievous circumstances;
1:109
不僅未曾逃避這些侵襲,反倒顯出了由神聖安排而來的堅定與更加穩固;
not fleeing from them, but rather displaying the steadfastness and greater firmness that comes of the divine dispensation;
1:110
so that it might adorn your venerable head with the victorious crown, and present your struggles to others as an exemplary pattern of benefit.
1:111
As is your custom, then, dear friend, win this contest too, and bear nobly the death of your son-in-law, who was my most genuine friend.
1:112
並願你以你的德性智慧,勝過血緣之情,也勝過對那調配得最為美善、最為高貴之品格的追憶——那追憶甚至勝過畫家的技藝與作家的學識;
And by your philosophy conquer both kinship and the memory of a character most excellently and nobly tempered — a memory surpassing even the painter's art and the writer's skill;
1:113
and dissolve the assault of despondency by remembering him who wisely orders our affairs, foresees the future, and directs all things toward what is beneficial.
1:114
讓我們一同為他歡喜,因他已脫離了人生的驚濤駭浪;
And let us rejoice together with him who has been delivered from the surging billows of life;
1:115
or rather, let us give thanks, that being borne along by favorable winds, he has anchored in windless harbors, and has not experienced the bitter shipwrecks of which this life is full.
1:116
But indeed I know that I am doing a superfluous thing in exhorting to endurance the noble contestant of virtue, and the trainer of other athletes.
1:117
Yet I write nonetheless, offering through these words consolation also to myself.
1:118
For indeed I was grieved when I recalled our admirable companionship.
1:119
But again I praised the Governor of all things, who knows what is going to be beneficial, and who steers our affairs toward it.
1:120
I dictated these things after writing the earlier memorandum, since one of my friends in Antioch had reported to me the death.
1:121
But I was ignorant of the fruit of the vine cultivated there.
1:122
但如今,藉著閣下的勤勉,我已然知曉了它;
But now, through your Diligence, I have come to know it;
1:123
並且我驚歎於它外觀的潔白,以及口感的細緻;
and I marvel both at the whiteness of its appearance and the delicacy of its taste;
1:124
and time will perhaps add to its pleasantness, unless it should turn sour.
1:125
For time works ruin also upon wines, just as, in turn, upon bodies and plants and buildings and other things made by hand.
1:126
But it is entirely useless to me, if indeed, as you say, it has the natural property of making those who drink it long-lived.
1:127
因為我本人,並非那渴慕長壽歲月之人;
For I, at any rate, am no lover of long spans of time;
1:128
因為此生的驚濤駭浪既多且苦;
since the billows of this life are many and harsh;
1:129
but rather I was pleased to learn of the health of the solitary.
1:130
因為實在說來,我心中確實一直被這樣的憂慮所刺痛;
For indeed I had also this care that was pricking me;
1:131
yet I did not justly accuse the physicians.
1:132
For the ailment required just such treatment.
1:133
I have sent to your Nobility a small jar of honey, such as the Cilician bees produce, having gathered it from the flowers of the storax.
1:134
If I were reckoning only the nature of the affliction that has befallen you, I too should have needed words of consolation — not only because I regard whatever is yours as my own, whether joyful or otherwise, but also because I especially loved that admirable and truly praiseworthy person.
1:135
然而既然神聖的定命已使他離開此世,遷入更美好的生命,我也就從自己心中驅散了那沮喪的雲霧,並懇求閣下以理智克服沮喪之苦,適時地將神聖話語的療慰之詞,施予自己的心靈;
But since a divine decree has removed him from this life and translated him to the better existence, I too disperse from my own soul the cloud of despondency, and I entreat your Grace to conquer the affliction of despondency by right reasoning, and to apply in due season to your soul the healing charm of the divine words;
1:136
for it is precisely for this reason that, from our very swaddling-clothes, we draw upon Sacred Scripture as upon a kind of nursing breast, so that, whenever affliction befalls us, we may apply the Spirit's teaching as a remedy that wards off harm.
1:137
We know indeed how utterly grievous and exceedingly painful it is, when one has had experience of someone truly worthy of love, suddenly to be bereft of the beloved, and, having been in good fortune, to fall into misfortune.
1:138
然而,對那些具有見識、運用清明理智之人而言,人間諸事沒有一件是出乎意料的;
But for those who possess understanding and make use of sound reasoning, nothing of human affairs is unexpected;
1:139
因為這些事物之中,沒有一樣是穩固或恆常的——無論是美貌、財富、體魄的健壯,還是地位的顯赫;
for none of these things is stable or secure — not beauty, not wealth, not bodily vigor, not the weight of rank;
1:140
nor anything else of what is admired by most people.
1:141
有些人從極度的富裕淪落至最深的貧困;
For some fell from the height of prosperity into extreme poverty;
1:142
另有些人失去了健康,與種種疾病搏鬥;
others, having lost their health, wrestle with maladies of every kind;
1:143
And bodily beauty is disfigured by disease and ravaged by old age,
1:144
And very wisely the Ruler of all has allowed none of these things to be lasting or permanent,
1:145
so that those who have attained them, fearing their reversals, might restrain their pride, and, knowing their ebb and flow, might not put their confidence in things temporary, but might set their hopes on the Giver of good things.
1:146
深知這些事,我懇請 閣下徹底省察人的本性;
Knowing these things, I ask your Admirableness to study well the nature of humankind;
1:147
for you will find that it is mortal, and from the beginning received the decree of death.
1:148
For to Adam the God of all said:
1:149
"You are earth, and to earth you shall return."
1:150
He who pronounced this sentence does not lie, and experience is witness.
1:151
For all have one entrance into life, according to the divine Scripture, and an equal exit, and everyone who is born awaits the grave.
1:152
而眾人存活的年日也並不相等;
Nor do all live for an equal span of time;
1:153
有人夭折早逝,有人活至成年方終,也有人歷盡老年的種種艱辛才告別人世;
but some die prematurely, others after reaching manhood, and others again after experiencing the hardships of old age;
1:154
so also those who have taken up the yoke of marriage are separated; for of necessity either the husband must depart first, or the wife must receive the end of life before him.
1:155
有人在洞房之後隨即迎來哀慟;
And some received mourning immediately after the bridal chamber;
1:156
others, having lived together only a short time,
1:157
were afforded opportunity to overcome the affliction.
1:158
此外,離世者曾成為兒女之父,留下他們已近成年,且他本人已攀升至榮銜的最高峰;
And besides these things, that he who departed had become a father of children, and left them near adulthood, and had risen to the very summit of dignities;
1:159
and that, though he became distinguished, he gave no occasion to envy, but rather increased [men's] affection for him, and left behind a renown for liberality, hatred of wickedness, gentleness, and the rest of moral virtue — these things are sufficient to console even those who are utterly enslaved to grief.
1:160
But if indeed we take to mind the divine promises and the hopes of Christians — I mean the resurrection, and eternal life, and life in the kingdom, and the things which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, which God has prepared for those who love him — what pretext for despondency will then remain? especially since the Apostle cries out explicitly:
1:161
"I would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as do the rest, who have no hope."
1:162
然而我知道,即使是那些沒有指望的人,其中許多人也僅憑理性便克服了這哀痛之情;
But I know that many even of those who have no hope have overcome their suffering by reason alone;
1:163
and it is among the most absurd things that those who are borne up by such a hope should be found worse than those who have no hope.
1:164
Let us, then, I beg you, regard his death as a distant journey abroad, and just as we are accustomed, when he is away travelling, to grieve indeed, but to await his return, so also now let his separation grieve us moderately — for I counsel what is proportionate to nature — but let us not mourn him as a dead man; rather, let us rejoice with him in his departure and his release from this place, because he has been freed from uncertain affairs and fears no change — neither of soul, nor of body, nor of the things pertaining to the body — but, having passed beyond the contests, awaits the prizes.
1:165
至於孤兒之境與寡居之苦,也不要讓它們過度使你們憂傷;
And let orphanhood and widowhood not grieve you excessively;
1:166
for we have a greater guardian, who also legislates for others to take great care of orphans and widows:
1:167
"He will take up the orphan and the widow, but the way of sinners he will destroy."
1:168
Let us entrust our helm to him, and we shall obtain provision of every kind.
1:169
因為祂對我們的關懷,將勝過任何人;
For he will be more solicitous for us than any man;
1:170
"Can a woman forget her infant, or fail to have compassion on the offspring of her womb? But even if a woman should forget these things, yet I will not forget you," says the Holy One.
1:171
因為祂與我們的關係,比父母更為親近;
For he is more intimately related to us than father or mother;
1:172
for he himself is our maker and creator.
1:173
For it is not marriage that makes fathers, but it is by his assent that fathers become fathers.
1:174
I have been compelled to write these things now, since my bonds do not permit me to hasten to you.
1:175
But it suffices that the most God-beloved and most holy bishop alone should procure every consolation for your most faithful soul, both by word and by deed, and by his presence, and by sharing your cares, and by his spiritual and God-given wisdom, through which I believe the storm of despondency will be lulled to rest.
1:176
我知道自己遲延了,在安慰的話語上有所耽擱;
I know that I have been tardy and have delayed my words of consolation;
1:177
但我這樣做並非毫無緣由;
but I did not do this without reason;
1:178
for I considered it profitable to yield to the affliction while it was still violent.
1:179
因為即便是最有智慧的醫師,也不會在高燒最劇烈之時投以退燒的藥劑;
For not even the wisest physicians administer remedial medicines at the height of a fever;
1:180
but they bring the help of their art to bear at the proper time,
1:181
as a common remedy, both the hope of the resurrection and the will of him who wisely administers our affairs.
1:182
因為凡是那不可言喻的智慧所安排施行之事,人都當甘心悅納,並且務要相信這一切終究有益;
For one must love what is dispensed by ineffable wisdom, and must consider these things altogether beneficial;
1:183
for those who make use of these pious reasonings will both receive the recompense of piety and will live more contentedly, having been freed from the excess of lamentation.
1:184
But those who are enslaved to their suffering will gain nothing by their lamenting, but will live in misery and will provoke the Guardian of all.
1:185
「賞賜的是耶和華,收取的也是耶和華;
"The Lord gave, the Lord has taken away;
1:186
照主所喜悅的,事情也照樣成就了;
as it seemed good to the Lord, so also it came to pass;
1:187
blessed be the name of the Lord forever."
1:188
It seems that there is nothing good left to be expected.
1:189
For not only has it not abated, but, so to speak, the storm of the Church reaches its climax nearly every single day.
1:190
And those who convene the synod have also arrived, and have delivered the letters of summons to certain other metropolitans, and to our own.
1:191
For this too is easy for him, but we are unworthy of the calm.
1:192
But the grace of endurance suffices for us, so that through it we may prove superior to those who make war against us.
1:193
For this is also what the divine Apostle taught us to ask for,
1:194
for, he says, "He will make, with the temptation, also the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it."
1:195
But I beseech your Piety to silence the fault-finders and to persuade them that those who are, as the saying goes, outside the range of the arrows, ought not to mock those who stand arrayed for battle, both being struck and striking.
1:196
But Samson, using the jawbone of a donkey, struck down a thousand men at once.
1:197
And no one finds fault with the victory, nor accuses the champion of cowardice, on the ground that he conquered his adversaries not by wielding a spear, holding forth a shield, hurling many javelins, or drawing a bow.
1:198
Thus, therefore, one must also judge those who contend for piety, and must not look for words that stir up strife, but for arguments that clearly proclaim the truth and fill with shame those who dare to gainsay it.
1:199
稱聖童貞女為「生人者」與「生神者」二者兼稱,與稱她為那被生者的母親與婢女,並補充說她是就我等主耶穌基督之為人而言是母親,就其為神而言是婢女——如此便對那容易招致誣衊的名稱略而不提,卻仍表達同一意涵,只是採用了另一種稱謂——這兩者之間究竟有何不同呢?此外,還須明白:其中一個是通用的名稱,另一個則是童貞女所特有的名稱;
For what difference does it make to call the holy Virgin both Anthropotokos and Theotokos together, or to call her the mother and handmaid of him who was born, and to add that she is mother as of our Lord Jesus Christ as man, but handmaid as of God, and so to pass over in silence the term that affords a pretext for slander, while expressing the same sense, though employing a different appellation? Besides this, one must also observe that the one is a common name, while the other is proper to the Virgin;
1:200
and that the whole dispute has arisen concerning this — as it ought not to have.
1:201
而且多數古代教父均將那較為尊貴的稱謂加諸於童貞女;
And indeed most of the ancient Fathers applied to the Virgin the more honorable appellation;
1:202
and this your Godliness has also done, in two or three discourses,
1:203
我手中也存有其中幾篇,因 閣下曾將它們寄給我;
and I have some of these, since your Piety sent them to me;
1:204
and you did not join Anthropotokos alongside Theotokos, my lord, but indicated the sense of this by other names.
1:205
For in the first place, O dear friend of mine, many other illustrious and exceedingly distinguished men have arisen,
1:206
And next one must also observe this: that it is fitting for the one who is accused to bring forward indisputable witnesses, whom not even any of the accusers can find fault with.
1:207
But if the one being prosecuted should call to testify persons who are themselves accused by the prosecutors, not even the judge himself would tolerate accepting such testimony.
1:208
For if, in writing a eulogy of the Fathers, I had omitted these saints, I would have done wrong, I confess, and would have proved ungrateful toward my teachers.
1:209
But if, being accused, I brought forward a defense and produced indisputable witnesses, why do those who are unwilling to see any of this find fault in vain? And as to how I revere these men, witness is the book written by me on their behalf, in which we refuted the writing composed against them, not fearing the power of the accusers nor the plots that were made against us.
1:210
Let those, then, who embrace idle talk find some other occasion for their trifling.
1:211
我的目的並非事事都為了討好某人或某人而言而行;
It is not my purpose to say and do everything to please this person or that;
1:212
for my conscience bears me witness that I do these things not for the sake of bodily comfort, nor because I cling to that care-ridden honor—which I hesitate to call wretched.
1:213
For long ago I would have withdrawn of my own accord, had I not feared the divine tribunal.
1:214
And now know well, my lord, that I await the compulsion of necessity.
1:215
而我以為,此事已然迫近;
And I think it draws near;
1:216
for the things now being concocted give proof of it.
1:217
倘若我所顧念的僅是您哀傷之過度,我原會暫且擱下這封信,好讓時間來助益療傷;
If I looked only to the excess of your suffering, I would for now have put off this letter, so that I might take time as an ally in your healing;
1:218
but since I know the philosophic constancy of you, most God-beloved, I ventured to offer words of consolation, which I have learned both from nature and from the divine Scripture.
1:219
因為本性自身即含著速朽之性,人生一切皆充滿此類災禍;
For nature itself has its mortality, and all of life is full of such calamities;
1:220
and full of these are the books of the holy Gospels, full too the writings of the holy Apostles, and the oracles of the thrice-blessed Prophets.
1:221
But I think it superfluous to gather these things and offer them to you, most reverend one, who from the beginning have been nurtured on the God-inspired words, and have ordered your own life according to them, and need no other teaching.
1:222
因此,我懇請您憶起那些教導我們克制情感、應許永恆生命、宣告死亡之廢除、並預告我們眾人共同復活的言語;
I exhort you, then, to call to mind those words which enjoin us to master our passions, and promise eternal life, and proclaim the abolition of death, and announce the common resurrection of us all;
1:223
For there are times when death is better than life, and what seems grievous is more gladdening than what is thought pleasant.
1:224
For all will marvel at the courage of reason, which nobly received the assault of suffering and dissolved its most violent onset by the magnanimity of its resolve.
1:225
然而,我們在那已故孩子所留下的『活的肖像』中,已有足夠的慰藉;
We have consolation enough in the living images of the departed child;
1:226
for he has left us lovely offspring, able to put a stop to the excess of our grief.
1:227
Beyond this I entreat you also to measure your grief by the weakness of the body, and not to increase your sufferings through an excess of despondency.
1:228
當我仰望那神聖的律法——它稱結為婚姻的兩人為『一體』——我實在不知道該用什麼方式,去安慰那被割離分開的肢體;
When I look to the divine law, which calls those joined in marriage "one flesh," I do not know in what way I might console the member severed by the cutting;
1:229
for I reckon the magnitude of the pain.
1:230
"You are earth, and to earth you shall return;"
