'And the Egyptians shall serve the Assyrians.'
1:1747
The Assyrians in ancient times were also called Syrians.
1:1748
[He foretells] the intermingling that afterward came about between Syrians and Egyptians, in accordance with the subjection of the Egyptians.
1:1749
因為在我們列祖的時代,管理權曾託付給敘利亞的行省;
For indeed in the time of our fathers the rule was entrusted to the Syrian province;
1:1750
and this man, seated in Antioch, the metropolis of the Syrians, [ruled over] the Egyptians.
1:1751
By these words, then, the prophecy has made plain the great transformation of the Egyptians.
1:1752
But if anyone does not accept this interpretation, he must recognize that the prophets foretell things that will come to pass at various times.
1:1753
For indeed, this same prophet, having above foretold to the Jews the saving birth of Emmanuel, immediately joined to it the events concerning Pekah and Rezin; for he said:
1:1754
「你所懼怕的那地,必在那兩位君王面前被撇棄。」這事在先知說預言的那個時候就應驗了,而關乎以馬內利的事卻是在六百多年之後才得成就;
'And the land which you fear shall be forsaken from before the two kings.' Now this came to pass at that very time in which the prophet uttered it, whereas the events concerning Emmanuel reached their fulfillment more than six hundred years later;
1:1755
yet the prophecies are nonetheless joined together, and there is nothing that distinguishes them.
1:1756
In this way, then, we shall understand also the prediction concerning Egypt: that those things foretelling its piety came to pass long ages afterward, while the things concerning the Assyrians reached their fulfillment at that time, as a confirmation of the more distant prediction.
1:1757
And that the Egyptians came up against the Assyrians—for it was Pharaoh Necho who did this—both the Second Book of Chronicles and the Fourth Book of Kingdoms teach.
1:1758
And the Assyrians came up against them, and the Egyptians became slaves to the Assyrians; and this occurred under Nebuchadnezzar.
1:1759
In that day Israel shall be third among the Assyrians and among the Egyptians, blessed in the land which the Lord of Sabaoth has blessed, saying:
1:1760
'Blessed be my people that are in Egypt, and the work of my hands in Assyria, and my inheritance Israel.'
1:1761
By these words he has indicated the recall of the Jews.
1:1762
For, he says, just as I set them free from the bondage of the Egyptians, so too I shall bring them back from Babylon, and shall make them objects of admiration, and shall prepare them to dwell in the blessed land.
1:1763
For this my people, who in Egypt obtained my succor, shall display my strength in Assyria, being delivered through me from their bondage, and shall again be my inheritance.
1:1764
To these things the prophet still joins the following: that, when a certain Assyrian general named Tanathan had seized Azotus and laid waste both the city itself and its territory, the prophet was commanded by the God of all to strip off the tunic made of hair, and to walk with bare feet, and to join to his words this outward appearance, and to demonstrate by his deeds the truth of the prophecy of his words.
1:1765
And when I had done these things, he says, the Lord himself spoke thus, using my tongue as an instrument:
1:1766
「我的僕人以賽亞怎樣赤身赤腳行走了三年,這事就要向埃及人和古實人成為預兆與奇事;
'As my servant Isaiah has walked naked and unshod three years, they shall be signs and wonders to the Egyptians and Ethiopians;
1:1767
for thus shall the king of the Assyrians lead away the captivity of Egypt and of the Ethiopians, young men and old men, naked and unshod, with the shame of Egypt uncovered.'
1:1768
He has limited to three years the time of the signs which forewarned of the coming destruction, and he teaches that, in accordance with that outward appearance of the prophet, the Assyrians, having stripped bare every age of the Ethiopians and Egyptians, shall lead them away as prisoners of war.
1:1769
And they shall be ashamed, being defeated, on account of the Ethiopians, in whom the Egyptians had put their trust, who were to them a glory.
1:1770
When the Assyrians came against them, they summoned the Ethiopians to their alliance.
1:1771
And these indeed lent their aid, but in common they suffered the defeat.
1:1772
And those who dwell on this island shall say in that day:
1:1773
「看哪,我們曾倚靠逃到他們那裡求救;
'Behold, we were putting our trust in fleeing to them for help;
1:1774
and they themselves could not be saved from the king of the Assyrians, and how shall we be saved?' He calls Egypt an island, since it is made sea-like by the river and surrounded by canals.
1:1775
These, he says, after their defeat, shall say that in vain did we take courage in the Ethiopians, for they were not able to succor even themselves.
1:1776
This is the end of the prediction concerning the Egyptians.
1:1777
And since he had made mention of the Assyrians, he foretells the destruction of Babylon:
1:1778
The word of the desert of the sea.
1:1779
He calls Babylon 'a desert sea'—a sea because of its former prosperity and the multitude of its inhabitants, who imitated the waves; a desert because of the calamity that was later brought upon it.
1:1780
As a tempest might pass through the desert, coming from the wilderness, from a fearsome land.
1:1781
This is a personification, spoken in the character of Babylon.
1:1782
She calls the army of the Persians and Medes a tempest, which she prays may pass through and not advance against her.
1:1783
Then he lays bare her dread:
1:1784
'A fearful vision, and a hard thing, was announced to me.'
1:1785
'Grievous things,' she says, 'and harsh things do I foresee.'
1:1786
'He that despises, despises; and he that transgresses, transgresses.'
1:1787
'Against me come the Elamites, and the ambassadors of the Persians come against me.'
1:1788
These things Symmachus has rendered thus:
1:1789
'He that despises is despised, and he that inflicts misery suffers misery.'
1:1790
「以攔哪,你上去罷;瑪代啊,你們圍攻罷。」她說:「我從前輕慢別人,如今卻被輕慢;
'Go up, O Elam; besiege, O Medes.' 'Of old,' she says, 'I despised, but now I am despised;
1:1791
of old I made others wretched, but now I suffer the very things that I did.'
1:1792
'Go up, then, O Elam'—and this is a Persian nation—'besiege, O Medes.'
1:1793
'Now therefore will I groan and comfort myself.'
1:1794
The groaning consoles one who is in anguish.
1:1795
For like some smoke sent forth from within, from the heart, out of the fire of despondency, she fittingly said:
1:1796
'For I who was of old well-girded and noble, who marched against all the nations, now am I deprived of strength and have anguish that imitates the pangs of childbirth.'
1:1797
'And what is the cause of the change? I did wrong so as not to hear, I strove so as not to see.'
1:1798
'My heart wanders astray, and lawlessness overwhelms me; my soul has sunk into fear.'
1:1799
'O king, let my counsel be pleasing to you, and by acts of mercy wash away your sins, and your iniquities by compassion toward the poor'—'I saw the greatest wonders and would not perceive what was needful: that furnace which did not consume the noble athletes.'
1:1800
'I did wrong so as not to hearken, I strove so as not to see.'
1:1801
Having set down these things in the character of Babylon, the prophet shows God commanding the enemies to take courage against Babylon:
1:1802
'Rise up, O rulers, prepare your shields.'
1:1803
Then he teaches that he was commanded to set watchmen in some lookout place and to report what was seen.
1:1804
And having done this, he saw two horsemen, the one riding upon an ass, the other upon a camel.
1:1805
By the horses he signifies the cavalry army; by the ass and the camel, the beasts of burden.
1:1806
'Hearken with much hearkening, and call Uriah to the watchtower.'
1:1807
'Keep silence,' he says, 'and let the tongue be stilled, but let the ear give heed.'
1:1808
'And have Uriah as your companion;'
1:1809
'for at the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.' Then he stood at the watchtower as one waiting all day and all night for that which was to be announced, and he saw someone riding upon a pair of horses and crying out: 'Babylon has fallen, and all her images and her handmade idols are shattered to the ground.'
1:1810
Having heard these words, the prophet cannot bear to conceal them, but makes them known to his kinsmen:
1:1811
'Hear, you who are left and are in anguish; hear the things I have heard from the Lord of Sabaoth, which the God of Israel has announced to us.'
1:1812
And these things were sufficient to instill consolation in those who believe.
1:1813
Having thus foretold the things concerning Babylon and joined them to the prophecy concerning the Egyptians, he foretells the salvation of Idumea.
1:1814
此處他所說的以東,是指以掃的族類;
Here by Idumea he means the race of Esau;
1:1815
for this Edom was named from his ruddy appearance.
1:1816
以掃與雅各原是兄弟;
Now Esau and Jacob were brothers;
1:1817
yet nonetheless, although the Israelites and the Idumeans traced their descent from Abraham, they were most hostilely disposed toward one another.
1:1818
...thus they preserved the ancestral hatred.
1:1819
we have made plain in the prophecies of the other prophets.
1:1820
'To me one calls from Seir.'
1:1821
西珥是以東人的山所稱的名字;
Seir is the name given to the mountain of the Idumeans;
1:1822
這名字也是從以掃而來的;
and it too received its appellation from Esau;
1:1823
for since he was hairy, he was named Seir, that is, 'the shaggy one.'
1:1824
'Why do you wail? To the one keeping watch I spoke from the night;' and keeping watch he came in the morning and in the night.
1:1825
'Keeping watch he came in the morning and the night.'
1:1826
For since, dreading their enemies, they kept vigil and stationed themselves along the wall, keeping watch by night and by day, and as they watched they cried out, supposing that thereby they frightened their adversaries, fittingly the prophetic word mockingly says to them:
1:1827
'Guard the battlements,' meaning:
1:1828
'You do well to take forethought for your safety; but why do you wail while keeping watch, and not only by night but also by day?'
1:1829
「然而你們若尋求,就儘管尋求;
'Nevertheless, if you seek, seek;
1:1830
turn back, come and dwell with me in the wood.'
1:1831
'If you seek salvation, come to me; do not rely upon yourselves.'
1:1832
「我記念我與亞伯拉罕的親屬關係;
'I am mindful of my kinship with Abraham;
1:1833
therefore those who take refuge I will hide as in some wood, and I will make them stronger than their enemies.'
1:1834
在以東人之後,他向以實瑪利人預言將要臨到的事;
After the Idumeans, he foretells to the Ishmaelites the things that are to come;
1:1835
for he names them Arabs.
1:1836
'To meet the thirsty bring water, you who dwell in the land of Teman; meet the fugitives with loaves.'
1:1837
He says there is a great multitude of swordsmen, and also a great host of archers.
1:1838
For which cause the greater part have fallen.
1:1839
'Yet a year, as the year of a hired laborer, and the glory of the sons of Kedar shall fail, and the remnant of the bows of the number of the mighty men of Kedar shall be few, for the Lord, the God of Israel, has thus spoken.'
1:1840
他顯明所說之言的真確,指明說話的是誰;
He showed the truth of what was said, disclosing who it was that spoke;
1:1841
for this One is God and Lord.
1:1842
Kedar, however, we have found in the lineage of Ishmael.
1:1843
He therefore says, not that such a race will be utterly destroyed, but that its glory will be extinguished and few will remain instead of many.
1:1844
And this indeed came to pass in the assault of the Assyrians, but in the course of time they again increased.
1:1845
For He who promised to Abraham the multitude of Ishmael's descendants is not false.
1:1846
After these he directs his words to Jerusalem.
1:1847
他稱她為錫安的山谷,是因為羅馬人給他們帶來的荒涼;
He calls her the valley of Zion because of the desolation brought upon them by the Romans;
1:1848
for this is what he here foretells.
1:1849
'What has now happened to you, that you have all gone up to the housetops in vain? The city is filled with those who cry out, the exulting city.'
1:1850
'What is this strange thing,' he says, 'what is this astonishing thing, that the city which was insolent against all is now filled with turmoil and confusion, so that they even take to the very housetops and from above survey the multitude of the enemy? Your slain are not slain by the sword, nor are your dead the dead of war.'
1:1851
'It is not the enemy,' he says, 'who have grown strong against you, but I have given you up because of their madness against me.'
1:1852
'And not only the rulers, but even those of the soldiers accustomed to excel in valor—some fled, while others, being captured, were bound.'
1:1853
Having prophesied these things, the prophet adds:
1:1854
「你們任憑我,我要痛哭;
'Let me be; I will weep bitterly;
1:1855
do not prevail upon me to comfort me over the ruin of the daughter of my people.'
1:1856
He says the evils that have befallen the city are beyond consolation.
1:1857
He calls her the daughter of his people since he himself also traces his lineage from her.
1:1858
「因為這是萬軍之耶和華所定的一日,充滿騷亂、毀滅、踐踏與迷惑;
'For it is a day of turmoil and destruction and trampling and wandering from the Lord of Sabaoth;
1:1859
in the valley of Zion they wander, from small to great they wander upon the mountains.'
1:1860
He says the time of calamities came upon them, and for that reason those who were utterly beyond contempt became an easy prey to all.
1:1861
'And the Elamites took quivers.'
1:1862
他稱撒瑪利亞人為以攔人;
He calls the Samaritans Elamites;
1:1863
for they were resettled from the Persian land.
1:1864
And being hostilely disposed toward the Jews, they of necessity fought as allies of the Romans against them.
1:1865
'Mount up, O men, upon horses, and an assembly of battle-array.'
1:1866
'And the valleys shall be filled with chariots, and the horsemen shall block up the gates and shall uncover the gates of Judah,' that is, shall open them.
1:1867
'To block up' is the opposite of 'to open.'
1:1868
然而這兩樣他們都作了;
Yet they did both;
1:1869
for they prevented those under siege from fleeing, while to the enemy they flung the doors open.
1:1870
And by 'city' he means Zion.
1:1871
'And they saw that they were many, and they turned back the water of the ancient pool into the city, and they numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and they pulled down the houses to make a fortification for the wall of the city.'
1:1872
Most of these things Josephus too records, he who composed the history of the Jews.
1:1873
For when they saw the city being destroyed, the ringleaders of the sedition tore down many of the houses and built up the Antonia and the temple more securely.
1:1874
'And you made for yourselves water between the two walls, within the ancient pool; but you did not look to Him who from the beginning created it, nor did you see Him who fashioned it from afar off.'
1:1875
「你們若求告我的扶助,這一切原是不需要的;
'You would have needed none of these things, had you called upon my aid;
1:1876
for in an instant I would have scattered the enemy.'
1:1877
Besides this he charges them that, when they ought to have mourned and lamented and to have propitiated God because of the magnitude of their calamities, they gave themselves to public banquets and passed their time in feasting, saying:
1:1878
'Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.'
1:1879
And all these things He both saw and heard, He who dwells in the heights and looks upon the lowly.
1:1880
'For these things are laid open in the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth,' He says, 'and this sin shall not be forgiven you until you die, said the Lord, the God of hosts.'
1:1881
And truly it is an utterly grievous thing, admitting no pardon, that while the Master is displeased, His servants should revel and by their laughter display their contempt.
1:1882
先知在此便結束了這篇預言;
Here, then, he brought this prophecy to a close;
1:1883
but after these things he teaches that they were commanded to go into the chamber to Shebna the steward and to say to him:
1:1884
'What have you here, and what have you here, that you have hewn out for yourself a tomb here, and made for yourself a tomb on high, and carved out for yourself a dwelling in the rock?' We have found that the 'chambers' (pastophoria) of the divine temple were the names given to the recesses, when interpreting Ezekiel.
1:1885
For which reason he built for himself also a conspicuous tomb, expecting thereby to be renowned in memory.
1:1886
And I suppose he is called 'steward' (tamias) because he was entrusted with the sacred vessels.
1:1887
Then He threatens him with destruction:
1:1888
'Behold now, the Lord of Sabaoth shall cast out the man and shall crush you, and shall take away your robe and your turban and your glorious crown.'
1:1889
These made up the high-priestly array.
1:1890
From this it is clear that he was of the chief priests.
1:1891
'And he will hurl you into a great and measureless land, and there you shall die.'
1:1892
Some say that he was captured while fleeing from the Assyrians and was led away as a prisoner of war.
1:1893
'And he will make your fair chariot a thing of dishonour, and the house of your ruler an object of destruction.'
1:1894
'And you shall be removed from your stewardship, and from your station he will cast you down.'
1:1895
Then he makes clear the one who succeeded to that man's honour:
1:1896
'And it shall come to pass in that day, I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Chelkias,'
1:1897
有關希西家的史記也提到這人;
The history concerning Hezekiah also mentions this man;
1:1898
for this man, unable to bear the blasphemy of the Assyrian, rent his garment.
1:1899
He promises to clothe this man with the robe, to adorn his head with the crown, and to give him the sovereignty and the stewardship.
1:1900
He praises him as one imitating the tender affection of a gentle father, and as one who carefully provided for the inhabitants of Jerusalem and for those dwelling round about.
1:1901
'to him, and he shall rule, and there shall be none to gainsay him;'
1:1902
In this our own affairs are also prefigured.
1:1903
'For whatsoever you shall bind upon the earth,' he says, 'shall be bound in the heavens;'
1:1904
'and whatsoever you shall loose upon the earth shall be loosed in the heavens.' 'And I will establish him as a ruler in a faithful place, and he shall be for a throne of glory to the house of his father.'
1:1905
In the same way he also gives him both priestly and princely authority.
1:1906
'And everyone glorious in the house of his father shall trust in him, from the small to the great, every small vessel, from the vessels of the aganoth, and they shall be hanging upon him in that day.'
1:1907
Both Symmachus and Aquila rendered 'aganoth' as 'mixing-bowls' (craters).
1:1908
For figuratively he called both the great and the small 'vessels.'
1:1909
For indeed of the vessels some were holy and others more holy, and some lay in the court while others in the sanctuary.
1:1910
'A man fixed firmly in a faithful place shall be shaken, and he shall be removed and shall fall, and the glory that is upon him shall be utterly destroyed, for the Lord has spoken.'
1:1911
He took up again the discourse concerning Somnas and showed that he received no benefit whatever from the priesthood, but reaped punishment from his negligence.
1:1912
The history, and the prophecy fitted to it, are set before us for our benefit.
1:1913
The Assyrians, having besieged Tyre also, sacked it.
1:1914
This too, then, the prophet foresaw with his spiritual eyes and foretold.
1:1915
'Wail, you ships of Carthage, for they have perished and no longer come from the land of the Kitians;'
1:1916
'for it has perished'—that is, Tyre.
1:1917
迦太基是利比亞的都城,如今稱為阿非利加;
Carthage is the metropolis of Libya, now called Africa;
1:1918
in the Hebrew, however, it is called Tharsis.
1:1919
而基提人,或作基提音——因為這名字在希伯來文和其他譯者中都是如此記載——就是稱為居比路(塞浦路斯)的;
And the Kitians, or Chettiim—for so the name stands both in the Hebrew and among the other Translators—is called Cyprus;
1:1920
for this island also has a town called Kition even to the present day.
1:1921
To these, then—to some as islanders and to others as dwellers on the coast—he bids them lament, since Tyre, in which they had the resources of their commerce, has been laid waste.
1:1922
'They were led away captive'—that is, the Tyrians.
1:1923
「住在這島上的人變得像誰呢?」推羅的地勢彷彿一座海島;
'To whom have those become like who dwell in this island?' The situation of Tyre resembles an island;
1:1924
for it is an isthmus lying in the sea, having a single entrance.
1:1925
He calls them as those bringing one thing and receiving another in exchange.
1:1926
'You who cross the sea in much water, a seed of merchants.' That is to say:
1:1927
their forefathers too had this manner of life.
1:1928
'As of a harvest being gathered in are the merchants of the nations.'
1:1929
He says: the ships of the merchants putting in at the harbours seem to resemble those who, at the time of harvest, carry the sheaves from the fields to the threshing-floors.
1:1930
'Be ashamed, O Sidon,' said the sea.
1:1931
Sidon too had of old been subject to Tyre.
1:1932
The word therefore introduces it speaking to Tyre—for this he called 'the sea'—:
1:1933
'Cease from your insolence, know yourself.'
1:1934
the sea said to Sidon:
1:1935
'Be ashamed'—but rather it is Sidon speaking to that which is called 'the sea,' that is, to the outer sea, to which he likens Tyre because of the multitude of its inhabitants.
1:1936
'The strength of the sea said:'
1:1937
'I have not travailed nor given birth, nor reared up young men, nor exalted virgins.'
1:1938
The prophetic word puts speeches into the mouths of the cities, and represents Sidon as saying:
1:1939
'a power gave birth and reared up.'
1:1940
The grace of the Spirit dramatizes these things, teaching us not to think highly of ourselves, but to know the Giver of good things.
1:1941
'And when it becomes heard in Egypt, anguish concerning Tyre shall seize them.'
1:1942
For from the calamities of Tyre the Egyptians will become anxious for themselves.
1:1943
'Depart to Carthage, wail, you who dwell in this island.'
1:1944
There was of old a friendship between the Carthaginians and the Tyrians, and the cities made commercial covenants with one another.
1:1945
For this very reason he bids the Carthaginians also to wail.
1:1946
'For insolence'—that is, lawlessness and arrogance—'led the way to the siege.'
1:1947
'Her own feet shall carry her away afar off into exile.'
1:1948
By 'her feet' he calls her way, that is, the practices of her life.
1:1949
This the same prophet also says elsewhere:
1:1950
'Woe to the lawless one, evil things according to the works of his hands shall befall him. Who devised these things against Tyre? Who brought forth this sentence against her? Is he inferior, or has he no strength?' That is to say:
1:1951
'Is it a small city, having little power, insufficient to withstand its enemies?' Then he shows her prosperity:
1:1952
'Her merchants are rulers of Canaan, and her traders the honoured ones of the earth.'
1:1953
'And indeed it is a most royal city and a far-famed emporium of the whole world.'
1:1954
What then is the cause of the calamities? 'The Lord of Sabaoth has purposed to break down all the insolence of the honoured, and to bring to dishonour every honoured thing upon the earth.'
1:1955
By 'the honoured' here he calls the boastful and the proud.
1:1956
For he does not strip of glory those who have the renown of virtue, but those who are ignorant of their own nature and think of themselves above it.
1:1957
'Work your land, for ships no longer come from Carthage.'
1:1958
'And your hand no longer has strength upon the sea, provoking kings.'
1:1959
Cease from commerce and hold fast to husbandry, and instead of the sea, work the land.
1:1960
For perhaps you will no longer enjoy the abundance from the sea, nor be an object of envy to the kings who border upon you.
1:1961
The Lord of Sabaoth has given command concerning Canaan, to destroy her strength.
1:1962
You shall no longer continue to insult and wrong the virgin daughter of Sidon.
1:1963
By 'Canaan' he names not the nature but the manner of life.
1:1964
這些話語本身便把此意顯明出來;
And the very words make this plain;
1:1965
因為他一面指控推羅,一面眷顧西頓,而西頓乃是迦南的長子;
for while accusing Tyre, he shows concern for Sidon, and Sidon was the firstborn of Canaan;
1:1966
因為經上說,迦南生了長子西頓。我們實在應當驚歎並頌讚主的仁慈:這兩座城,推羅與西頓,都懷抱著不敬虔與不法之事,他卻指控其一而眷顧其二;因為推羅行了不義,以她那顯赫的名聲為驕傲的憑藉,而西頓則受了她的虧負;
for it says, Canaan begot Sidon his firstborn. And it is worthy to marvel at and to praise the Master's love for mankind: that of the two cities, both Tyre and Sidon, which embraced impiety and lawlessness, he accuses the one but shows care for the other; since Tyre committed injustice, having her conspicuous eminence as an occasion for arrogance, while Sidon was wronged by her;
1:1967
and the God who loves mankind did not look to her own impiety, but to the injustice which she endured.
1:1968
你若逃往基提人那裡,在那裡也必得不著安息;
And if you go away to the Kittim, neither there will there be rest for you;
1:1969
and to the land of the Chaldeans—even this has been laid waste by the Assyrians—neither there will there be rest for you, for her wall has fallen, siim founded her, they set up her battlements, they raised up her towers.
1:1970
彷彿仇敵從四面攻擊她,以各樣的災禍圍困她,先知向她提出一個問題;
As though the enemies were assailing her from every side and encircling her with evils of every kind, he brings a question to her;
1:1971
Where, he says, have you planned to go away? To the Kittim, that is, to Cyprus? But not even there will you find any cessation of evils.
1:1972
For it is easy for those who have a ship, employing its power, both to bring you thence and to lead you away as a captive of the spear.
1:1973
But did you plan to seize Babylon, trusting in your ancient kinship?—for indeed Nimrod who built her traces his descent from Canaan—but this city too the impious and lawless manner of life rendered empty of inhabitants.
1:1974
For this the word hints at, saying:
1:1975
It has been laid waste by the Assyrians, that is to say
1:1976
by her own impiety and lawlessness.
1:1977
Her wall has fallen, instead of saying:
1:1978
siim founded her—for Aquila rendered the siim as 'those going out'—instead of saying:
1:1979
from on high she received this sentence, that she should become a captive of the spear.
1:1980
And at the very time when she was receiving her battlements and enclosing walls and the houses within, she already bore this verdict.
1:1981
But the Syrian translated the siim as 'demons.'
1:1982
而這翻譯乃是真確的;
And the interpretation is true;
1:1983
for I found the word siim occurring in this same prophet, where he says:
1:1984
this siim the Seventy translated as 'demons.'
1:1985
For indeed, when the Apostle says:
1:1986
I, as a wise master builder, have laid a foundation, we understand not stones but words of piety.
1:1987
然而先知再次吩咐迦太基的航海之人哀號,並預言推羅荒涼的時日;
The prophet, however, again having charged the seafaring folk of Carthage to wail, foretells also the time of the desolation of Tyre;
1:1988
Immeasurable is the Master's love for mankind.
1:1989
For they sinned throughout many generations, yet he circumscribes the punishment by the reign of a long-lived king, or by the lifetime of a single man.
1:1990
And it shall come to pass after seventy years, that Tyre shall be as the song of a harlot.
1:1991
這預言教導我們她那極大的放蕩與縱慾;
The prophecy teaches her great licentiousness and incontinence;
1:1992
for it bids her to employ the practices of prosperity even in her very misfortune.
1:1993
And he does this ironically, teaching the harmfulness of such a life.
1:1994
And it shall come to pass after seventy years, that God will make a visitation of Tyre, and she shall be restored again to her former state, and shall be a market for all the kingdoms of the world upon the face of all the earth.
1:1995
這些話語也抑制了猶太人的驕傲;
And these things restrain the pride of the Jews;
1:1996
因為他為耶路撒冷的荒涼所定的同樣年限,也因他極大的良善賜給了推羅,藉此教導人:他不單是猶太人的神,也是外邦人的神;
for the same length of time which he appointed for the desolation of Jerusalem, he granted also to Tyre because of his great goodness, teaching that he is God not of the Jews only but also of the nations;
1:1997
因為地和其中所充滿的都屬乎他。她的貨物和她的雇價必歸耶和華為聖;
For the earth is his, and its fullness. And her merchandise and her wages shall be holy to the Lord;
1:1998
it shall not be gathered for them nor stored up, but for those who dwell before the Lord shall all her merchandise be, to eat and to drink and to be filled, for a covenant, a memorial before the Lord.
1:1999
'for a covenant': Symmachus and Theodotion rendered it as 'for clothing oneself,' while Aquila rendered it 'a garment.'
1:2000
For he said that she who of old lived lawlessly and impiously would bring the gains of her merchandise to those who have devoted themselves to the service of God, so that from these they might have both the necessity of food and their raiment.
1:2001
有些人說,這些事是在從巴比倫歸回之後成就的,那時推羅人把這些禮物帶給在耶路撒冷的祭司;
Some have said that these things came to pass after the return from Babylon, when the Tyrians brought these gifts to the priests in Jerusalem;
1:2002
but some have said that Gog and Magog, having sacked Tyre, set out against Jerusalem, then there ended their life by a divinely-sent blow, and that the wealth amassed by them was dedicated to the God of all.
1:2003
但我既已看見這預言的應驗,就無需許多的推論;
But I, beholding the fulfillment of the prophecy, have no need of many reasonings;
1:2004
for the eyes are witnesses of the truth.
1:2005
For the splendid and conspicuous and richly-costly precincts of demons, which the ancient kings of Tyre constructed—these
1:2006
and out of these the priests of piety constructed sacred enclosures for God.
1:2007
And we see even unto this day many gifts being offered to God by all men, and the properties too, from which the priests of God are both fed and clothed, some of which men still living, and others who have died, have dedicated to God.
1:2008
The observation of these events, therefore, bears witness to the prophecy.
1:2009
然而這預言之語,在此既已結束論到推羅的預告,便進而預言那將要臨到眾人的事;
The prophetic word, however, here having concluded the prediction concerning Tyre, foretells the things that shall befall all men;
1:2010
he will uncover her face and scatter those dwelling in her.
1:2011
for it signifies both the things happening at various times in wars, and the things that shall be at the consummation of the present age.
1:2012
And the people shall be as the priest, and the servant as the master, and the maidservant as the mistress, and the buyer shall be as the seller, and the lender as the borrower, and the debtor as the one to whom he owes.
1:2013
這些事,就其確切而真實的意義而言,必在復活之後成就;
These things, properly and truly, shall come to pass after the resurrection;
1:2014
因為那時現今生命的樣式必要改變,尊卑地位的分別必要止息,取而代之的乃是德行與邪惡的分別;那時常有活在不法中的祭司被交付刑罰,也有些名列平信徒之中的人要進入祭司的品位;奴僕要被算在得救之人的數中,而主人卻被算在受罰之人的數中;
for then the fashion of the present life is changed, and the distinction of dignities ceases, while there is introduced instead the distinction of virtue and of vice; and often priests who have lived in lawlessness shall be delivered up to punishment, while some who are counted in the roll of the laity shall pass over into the rank of those; and household servants shall be numbered among the saved, but masters among the punished;
1:2015
thus Lazarus was dwelling in the bosom of Abraham, while the rich man was being consumed by fire.
1:2016
然而即或不然,就是在戰爭之中,人也可見這同樣的事發生;
But nevertheless, even in wars one may see this same thing happening;
1:2017
for the enemies do not recognize the distinction of slave and master, nor of nobly-born and low-born, but upon all alike they lay the yoke of slavery.
1:2018
Then again, having foretold the destruction of the world that shall come from the divine sentence, and the lamentations of those who exult in wealth and power, he added:
1:2019
But the earth has acted lawlessly because of those who dwell in her, because they transgressed the law and changed the ordinances, they broke the everlasting covenant.
1:2020
For since the earth is without reason and without soul, he fittingly taught that its inhabitants filled it with lawlessness.
