The phrase 'my king' means: 'appointed king by me, and reigning over my people.'
1:3936
'To my anointed, to Cyrus,' that is, 'to him who has been anointed and appointed by me.'
1:3937
'Moab is the cauldron of my hope.' This Aquila interpreted thus:
1:3938
'Moab is the cauldron of my washing.'
1:3939
And the Syriac has, 'the pot of my washing.'
1:3940
For since it is in such vessels that we are accustomed to wash our feet and to cleanse the garment soiled by the feet, he indicated the subjection of Moab by the image of the pot of washing.
1:3941
The cauldron is also used in divine Scripture with reference to punishment.
1:3942
So too the blessed Ezekiel teaches, when he was commanded to call Jerusalem a cauldron, the inhabitants flesh, the Babylonian fire, and the broth the necessary sustenance.
1:3943
When this had failed, the flesh was burned up.
1:3944
蒙福的耶利米也照樣看見一個底下燒著火的鍋;
So too the blessed Jeremiah saw a cauldron with a fire burning beneath it;
1:3945
'and its face was from the face of the north.'
1:3946
因此他說,瑪拿西也要收回他自己的地;
He says, then, that Manasseh too will receive back his own land;
1:3947
以法蓮要恢復他從前的能力;
and Ephraim will regain his former power;
1:3948
猶大要被立為眾人之上的君王;
and Judah will be proclaimed king over all;
1:3949
and the Moabites will be made subject to them, beholding their irresistible might.
1:3950
And not only those, but also the Idumeans and the foreigners.
1:3951
'Upon Idumea I will stretch out my sandal.'
1:3952
'To me the foreigners have been made subject.' Nor would anyone err who understood the cauldron to be the divine font, which punishes and consumes and does away with sin, while it rekindles by the divine Spirit and refashions and wipes away the stain, that is, the filth of the transgressions of those who are renewed through it,
1:3953
not only in it, but also among all the nations. For besides the Moabites, 'I will enslave the Idumeans also, and I will compel the foreigners to be subject.'
1:3954
Now divine Scripture calls the Palestinians 'foreigners,' not because the other nations were of the same stock, but because the others were set apart at a distance, while these were not only neighbors but even dwelt in their very midst.
1:3955
耶布斯人就這樣長久住在耶路撒冷;
Thus the Jebusites dwelt in Jerusalem for a very long time;
1:3956
基遍人也照樣住在迦巴;
thus the Gibeonites in Gibeah;
1:3957
and the Gazites, and the Ashkelonites, and the others dwelt nearby.
1:3958
And these things the histories teach more plainly.
1:3959
先知既如此被萬有的神教導了這些事,就渴望看見百姓歸回之後的興盛;
Having thus been taught these things by the God of all, the prophet longs to see the people's prosperity after the return;
1:3960
'...me into the fortified city? Or who will lead me as far as Idumea? Is it not you, O God, who rejected us?' For there was no other who could deem us worthy of such providential care. He calls Jerusalem 'the fortified city.'
1:3961
This Symmachus interpreted as 'the walled city.'
1:3962
For since it had been laid waste and stripped of its walls, but after the return had received back its own encircling ramparts, the prophet yearns to see it fortified with walls, and to run as a king even as far as Idumea, and to see his perpetual foes compelled to serve.
1:3963
'These things,' he says, 'do you accomplish, O Lord, you who rejected us and handed us over to the dominion of the Babylonians;'
1:3964
thus, having foretold the good things, he entreats concerning the grievous ones.
1:3965
'And will you not go forth, O God, with our armies?' 'You see us,' he says, 'so bitterly warred against, and yet you do not lead our host, nor perform mighty deeds as of old.'
1:3966
'for vain is the salvation of man.'
1:3967
'Come to the help,' he says, 'of those who are in evil plight;'
1:3968
'for you alone are able to dissolve our calamities;'
1:3969
'but the help of men, if you are not present, is vain.'
1:3970
'In God we shall do valiantly.' That is: 'let us turn to him, and serving him, let us appoint him our guardian.' 'And he himself will bring to nothing those who afflict us.' 'Let us call upon his providence,' he says, 'and take courage in it;'
1:3971
'for this alone suffices to dissolve our hardships and to overthrow the dominion of those who war against us.'
1:3972
For having said, 'In God we shall do valiantly, and he himself will bring to nothing those who afflict us,' he teaches the people in captivity what manner of prayer it is fitting to offer to God.
1:3973
'Hear, O God, my supplication;'
1:3974
凡屬世人中的任何一個人,若陷入困苦的境遇,也都可以合宜地說這些話;
These things any man among mortals would rightly say, should he fall into distressing circumstances;
1:3975
beseeching through them that his entreaty may be accepted and that he may be counted worthy of the providence from on high. Then he teaches who they are that pray.
1:3976
'From the ends of the earth I have cried to you.' For since Babylon lies at many stages' distance from Palestine, those who had been carried off supposed that they dwelt at the utmost bounds of the inhabited world, compelled as they were to dwell in that land.
1:3977
'When my heart was in anguish, you raised me up upon a rock.' 'I beseech you to obtain from you consolation of soul.'
1:3978
'For being in pain and lamenting the calamities that pressed upon me, I enjoyed your succor and became superior to my enemies.'
1:3979
這話是藉著那些從耶路撒冷被擄到巴比倫、後蒙准歸回之人的口說的;
This is said in the person of those carried off captive from Jerusalem into Babylon and granted their recall;
1:3980
但它也適用於每一個藉著悔改謀求自己救恩的人,就是不再走那歧路、而是行走那惟一且不偏斜之道的人;
but it also fits each one who works out his own salvation through repentance, and no longer walks in the by-path, but treads the sole and undeviating way;
1:3981
and this is clear from what follows. 'You have guided me.'
1:3982
[δʹ .]
'For you have become my hope;'
1:3983
'a tower of strength from before the enemy.' 'Having hoped to partake of your providence, I did not fail of my hope;'
1:3984
'for you became for me both a guide and a strong tower.'
1:3985
'I will dwell in your tabernacle for ever;'
1:3986
'I will find shelter under the covering of your wings.' He names Jerusalem the tabernacle of God.
1:3987
For in it he manifested himself to them.
1:3988
'I shall enjoy the providence that comes from you.'
1:3989
For by 'wings' he means the guardian care of God.
1:3990
And the phrase 'for ever' he has set down in the sense of 'perpetually.'
1:3991
神啊,因為祢垂聽了我的禱告;
For Thou, O God, hast hearkened unto my prayers;
1:3992
Thou hast given an inheritance to them that fear Thy name. I sing Thy praise continually, since, having received my supplications, Thou hast rendered unto us, the descendants of our forefathers, the inheritance promised to them.
1:3993
These things they say straightway, as soon as they have set out upon the road.
1:3994
然而應當知道,這裡所陳明的話語,也隱含著真產業的隱喻;
It should be known, moreover, that the words here set forth contain also riddling intimations of the true inheritance;
1:3995
and to these men, as in a type, He rendered the promised land.
1:3996
'Thou shalt add days upon the days of the king; his years unto the day of generation and generation.'
1:3997
his years unto the day of generation and generation.
1:3998
那時所羅巴伯作他們的王;
At that time Zerubbabel reigned over them;
1:3999
but not all the utterances of the prophecy fit him.
1:4000
因為「祢要為王增添歲月」這話,對他也是合宜的;
For the words, 'Thou shalt add days upon the days of the king,' fit him also;
1:4001
but they fit rather Him who according to the flesh sprang from him, through His great love for mankind becoming man in a manner known to Himself.
1:4002
因為這預言的話語在祂身上得以應驗;
For in His case the words of the prophecy prove true;
1:4003
'His years unto the day of generation and generation;'
1:4004
'he shall abide for ever before God.' For He received no beginning of days, neither shall He endure any end.
1:4005
For even though, having become man, He accepted death on our behalf, yet 'His years are unto the day of generation and generation.'
1:4006
For 'in the beginning He was, and was with God, and was God.'
1:4007
And the phrase 'before God' means, coexisting always with the Father. For to Him the same prophet said in the hundred-and-first psalm:
1:4008
因為正如那一位把被擄的人從巴比倫領回本國之地;
For just as that one led back the captivity from Babylon to the fatherland;
1:4009
'I am the life and the resurrection;'
1:4010
'and he that eateth Me shall live in Me.' 'His mercy and His truth, who shall search out?' For who, he says, is able accurately to comprehend the just and discerning mercy of God? for 'His judgments are a great deep.'
1:4011
「這樣,我要永遠歌頌祢的名,好使我天天還我所許的願。」因為我要永遠歌頌祢;
'So will I sing praise unto Thy name for ever, that I may pay my vows from day to day.' For I will ever hymn Thee;
1:4012
我要每日述說祢的恩典;
each day I will recount Thy gracious gifts;
1:4013
我也不會背棄我的許諾;
and I will not prove false to my promises;
1:4014
for by 'vows' he means his promises.
1:4015
For as one presiding over the choir in the divine temple, he hymned the God of all, as the Book of Chronicles says.
1:4016
這詩篇預言了馬其頓人的叛亂,以及安提阿古伊皮法尼對馬加比人的陰謀;
The psalm foretells the Macedonian uprisings, and the plots of Antiochus Epiphanes against the Maccabees;
1:4017
and it teaches the champions of piety what manner of reasonings it befits them to use in the season of adversaries.
1:4018
and to partake of swine's flesh sacrificed to idols, they rouse their own reasoning toward piety, and whet their zeal on behalf of godliness.
1:4019
'Dost thou not,' he says, 'O my soul, prefer the service of God above all things?' Then they go on to teach the gain that comes therefrom.
1:4020
'For with Him is my salvation.'
1:4021
[ γʹ .]
[Verse 3.] 'For He Himself is my God and my Saviour;'
1:4022
'my helper, I shall not be greatly moved.' This service, O my soul, affords thee salvation.
1:4023
For He is God and the bestower of good things, and able to establish those who are shaken.
1:4024
Calling therefore upon His succour, I shall be delivered from those who seek to cast me down.
1:4025
Having thus kindled their own reasonings toward piety, they turn their tongue against the adversaries.
1:4026
'How long do ye set upon a man? Ye all slay him, as a bowing wall and a tottering fence.' The sense of the verse is by way of transposition.
1:4027
'How long do ye use cruelty against us, taking no thought of our common nature, but, as though we were some leaning wall and a fence in danger of falling by the wind, do ye hasten to thrust and cast us down, holding a murderous intent?' That is to say, Do not exalt yourselves so greatly over us, as over weaklings.
1:4028
For we have as helper the God of all.
1:4029
'Yet they took counsel to reject my honour.' 'They have one aim,' he says, 'to strip me of the providence of God, from which I have all my honour and glory.'
1:4030
因為虔敬人的尊榮就是事奉神;
For the honour of the godly is to serve God;
1:4031
wherefore also the divinely-inspired Paul everywhere names himself a servant of Christ.
1:4032
「他們渴切地奔跑。」他們並不把這陰謀當作無關緊要的事;
'They ran in thirst.' Not as a trifling matter do they hold this plotting;
1:4033
but with all eagerness they do it, thirsting to cast me down into the pit of impiety.
1:4034
And what devices they employ, he tells:
1:4035
「他們的口說祝福的話,心裡卻咒詛。」他們用諂媚的言語,企圖蒙騙人;
'With their mouth they blessed, and in their heart they cursed.' They used flattering words, seeking to deceive;
1:4036
but within they held destruction concealed.
1:4037
Having thus displayed their plots, they again exhort themselves to endure, and to await the divine inclination of favour.
1:4038
'Nevertheless be thou subject unto God, O my soul;'
1:4039
'for from Him is my patient endurance.' Do not forsake, O my soul, the service of God, but, strengthened by the support supplied from Him, bear the assaults of hardships.
1:4040
'For He is my God and my Saviour, my helper; I shall not be removed.' For knowing Him to be the true God and the fountain of salvation, I will not endure to change my service, and run to another lordship.
1:4041
For the word 'I shall be removed' he has set down in place of 'I shall be transferred.'
1:4042
'I will not become,' he says, 'a deserter, and a slave of impiety.'
1:4043
'In God is my salvation and my glory;'
1:4044
「是幫助我的神,我的盼望也在乎神。」〔看哪,那先知的心智再一次更清楚地向我們指明了那不可分割、發出光輝、永恆常存之三位一體的各位格;
'the God of my help, and my hope is in God.' [Behold again, the prophetic mind has more clearly indicated to us the hypostases of the undivided, light-bearing, and ever-existing Trinity;
1:4045
並非說有三位神,斷乎不是;
not speaking of three gods, away with such a thought;
1:4046
that they may repel the assaults of impiety.
1:4047
For which cause they also rouse all their other kinsmen to the same piety, not enduring to be called victors alone.
1:4048
「你們眾民哪,要時時倚靠祂,在祂面前傾心吐意,因為神是我們的幫助。」同胞哪,你們要藐視眾人,堅定地把盼望寄託於祂;
'Hope in Him, O all ye congregation of the peoples; pour out your hearts before Him, for God is our helper.' Despising all men, O kinsmen, make firm your hope in Him;
1:4049
and lay all your mind upon Him, awaiting without doubt the help that comes from Him.
1:4050
For the phrase, 'Pour out your hearts before Him,' means this, namely: Consecrate to Him all your thoughts, and admit no doubt of mind.
1:4051
[Knowing full well that 'a double-minded man is unstable in all his ways,' and that 'no one can serve two masters.'] (10)
1:4052
'Nevertheless the sons of men are vanity;'
1:4053
'the sons of men are liars in the balances, that they may do wrong.' This Theodotion rendered more clearly:
1:4054
'Nevertheless the sons of men are a vapour;'
1:4055
'the sons of man are false, like the swaying of a balance.' 'Nothing of human things,' he says, 'is abiding, but it resembles a vapour sent up and straightway dispersed, and the swaying of a balance, now sinking down, now rising up, and having nothing settled or abiding.'
1:4056
And the interpretation of the Seventy is to be understood thus:
1:4057
'All human things are vanity;'
1:4058
'yet nevertheless the most of men take courage, as though the fleeting things were lasting;'
1:4059
'and they neglect equity, but hold unevenly the balances of the mind;'
1:4060
'and they despise the just, but rejoice in injustice.'
1:4061
他們一同出於虛空。然而縱使如此,他們從中也得不著任何益處;
They together, springing from vanity. Yet even so they carry off no gain from this;
1:4062
for all things are vain, and subject to sudden change.
1:4063
For thus did Symmachus render it:
1:4064
They are made vain together. From this he offers an exhortation to those who take the opposite course and exult in their wealth:
1:4065
Do not set your hope on injustice, and do not long after plunder. Do not, he says, deem worthy of desire that human transience which is established out of injustice.
1:4066
If riches flow in, do not set your heart upon them. When you see wealth pouring into your houses like a river, do not enslave your reasoning to it.
1:4067
And why then do you counsel and exhort these things? Verses 11, 12.
1:4068
Two things have I heard: that power belongs to God,
1:4069
主啊,慈愛也是屬乎你的;
and mercy is yours, O Lord;
1:4070
for you will render to each according to his works. I heard, he says, God the Lord of all declaring that there will be judgment, and a recompense of good things and of evil.
1:4071
The word once he set down not with reference to number, but with reference to that which shall by all means come to pass.
1:4072
God has declared, he says, once for all, and this belongs to the class of things that cannot fail to come to pass:
1:4073
namely, the punishment against the lawless, and the loving-kindness bestowed upon the godly.
1:4074
These very things God promised in giving the Law.
1:4075
他說,因為我是耶和華你的神,是忌邪的神;恨我的,我必追討他的罪,自父及子,直到三四代;
For I am, he says, the Lord your God, a jealous God, visiting the sin of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me;
1:4076
and showing mercy to thousands and to tens of thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
1:4077
[The very same things we hear also in the Gospels: how the Lord of glory, at his second coming from heaven, will separate men as the shepherd does, and will set the sheep on the right hand, but the goats on the left.
1:4078
Then, having again fallen into danger and escaped it, he reaches the wilderness.
1:4079
他就是在那裡寫下了這篇詩;
In which he composed this psalm;
1:4080
both disclosing the love he bore toward God, and foretelling the destruction of Saul.
1:4081
[And to all men he has given an occasion whereby they ought earnestly to entreat God and to await the help that comes from him.] Verse 2.
1:4082
神啊,你是我的神,我要切切地尋求你;
O God, my God, unto you do I rise early;
1:4083
我的肉體以何等多樣的方式渴慕你。狄奧多田翻作「以多少方式」;
In how manifold ways does my flesh long for you. Theodotion rendered it, in how many ways;
1:4084
and I have set down all the interpretations, teaching that the word posaplos ('in how manifold ways') is not two parts,
1:4085
彷彿「如何」與「多樣」是分開的;
the how being divided from the manifold;
1:4086
but rather that it is one part of speech, signifying the intensity of longing.
1:4087
And he wishes to say that both my soul and my body yearn for you and long after you, just as one who is thirsty longs for water most sweet and most limpid.
1:4088
In a land desert, and untrodden, and waterless.
1:4089
[ γʹ .]
〔第三節。〕我曾這樣在聖所中朝見你。我從曠野的荒涼並未受著任何損害;
[Verse 3.] So in the sanctuary I appeared before you. I received no harm from the desert;
1:4090
but as though standing beside your sacred tabernacle itself, so do I offer up to you my hymn of praise.
1:4091
For by in the sanctuary he means the tabernacle.
1:4092
For the divine temple had not yet been built.
1:4093
That I might see your power and your glory. I stand before you, picturing to myself your ineffable power.
1:4094
For since your nature is beyond attainment, I take from the things wrought by you the occasions for my doxology.
1:4095
[And the people who have believed from among the nations might continually say:
1:4096
我曾這樣在聖所中朝見你;
So in the sanctuary I appeared before you;
1:4097
in which you are sacrificed without being slain, and are divided without being parted, and are consumed while remaining unconsumed.] Verse 4.
1:4098
For your mercy is better than life; my lips shall praise you. Above all the life of the wealthy, and of the mighty, the carefree life and the anxious, the delicate and the dissolute, I choose your mercy, and I move my lips to your praise.
1:4099
我這一生要這樣稱頌你;
Thus will I bless you in my life;
1:4100
in your name I will lift up my hands. And this I will continue to do throughout my whole life:
1:4101
praising with my tongue, and stretching out my hands, and beseeching your loving-kindness.
1:4102
我的心就像飽足了骨髓肥油。我認為你的讚美乃是靈魂的肥美;
As with marrow and fatness may my soul be filled. And your praise I reckon to be the fatness of the soul;
1:4103
and I think it becomes thereby plump and well-nourished.
1:4104
For an enduring luxury and delight is the meditation upon your oracles.
1:4105
And with lips of exultation shall my mouth praise you. For which cause I will offer you my hymn with all eagerness, knowing the gain that comes from it.
1:4106
If I remembered you upon my bed, in the early hours I meditated on you.
1:4107
Because you have become my helper, and in the shelter of your wings I will exult. This Symmachus rendered thus:
1:4108
我在床上記念你;
I call you to remembrance upon my bed;
1:4109
每一更次我都思想你;
at every watch I meditated upon you;
1:4110
and being sheltered beneath your wings, I sang praise.
1:4111
他所說的「更次」乃是指夜間的更次;
And by watches he means the nocturnal ones;
1:4112
for those entrusted with the duty of keeping watch divide the night-time and do this, relieving one another in turn.
1:4113
And some divide it into three, others into four.
1:4114
And the Lord came to the holy apostles in the fourth watch of the night.
1:4115
and with hymns I requited the benefits that had been done to me.
1:4116
For as with a certain shelter of wings, you guard me with your invincible providence.
1:4117
[And this very thing the people who have believed from among the nations by all means calls to mind upon its bed, praising in the morning the Saviour of all.
1:4118
Because you yourself have become a helper, and in the shelter of your wings I will exult. And the same one might justly call wings the Old and the New Testament, sheltered and nourished and gladdened by which, through the regeneration of the washing, he was advanced unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.] Verse 9.
1:4119
我的心緊緊跟隨你。他說,我連片刻也不能使我的心思從對你的記念中挪開;
My soul has cleaved after you. Not even for a brief moment, he says, am I able to withdraw my mind from the remembrance of you;
1:4120
but being set aflame by warm affection, I am bound to your longing as though by some glue of memory.
1:4121
Then he shows the fruit of longing.
1:4122
But your right hand has upheld me. For seeing me so disposed, you deem me worthy of your providence.
1:4123
But they, in vain, sought my soul. Though I had done them no wrong, they are eager to slay me.
1:4124
They shall go into the lowest parts of the earth. But I know that they shall be delivered up to death.
1:4125
Then he also foretells the manner of their end.
1:4126
They shall be delivered up into the hands of the sword. This they shall suffer by a warlike right hand.
1:4127
他們必作狐狸的份。他說,這事他們不是在任何強大的仇敵手下遭受的;
They shall be portions for foxes. And this, he says, they shall not endure at the hands of any mighty enemies;
1:4128
乃是在鄰近外邦人的手下;
but at the hands of the neighbouring foreigners;
1:4129
who, after the manner of foxes, now attack, but often and continually, being driven off, take to flight.
1:4130
nor shall they be deemed worthy of burial, but shall lie exposed as food for the wild beasts.
1:4131
But the king shall rejoice in God. 'For I,' he says, 'having received the kingdom from You, will not take pleasure in the death of those men, but in Your providential care, through which I escaped the manifold plots of my enemies.'
1:4132
凡指著祂起誓的都必蒙稱讚,因為那說不義之言者的口已被塞住。從此以後,眾人都必坦然無懼地稱王,並指著他的平安起誓;
Everyone who swears by Him shall be praised, for the mouth of those who speak unjust things has been stopped. Henceforth all men shall with boldness both name the king and swear by his welfare;
1:4133
no longer fearing the slanderers, whose mouth has been stopped by death.
1:4134
But when this man had died, all men henceforth without fear rendered to the king the honour that befitted him, and made the king's welfare the matter of their oath, treating this as a mark of devotion and a token of goodwill.
1:4135
And he foretells their deliverance.
1:4136
[He foretells by what prayers the people from among the Gentiles, when turning to God, ought to entreat the Saviour.] 2.
1:4137
神啊,我向祢祈求的時候,求祢垂聽我的聲音;
Hear, O God, my voice when I make supplication to You;
1:4138
並且堅固我的心思;
and strengthen my mind;
1:4139
so that I may not dread the assaults of my enemies.
1:4140
Shelter me from the conspiracy of evildoers, from the multitude of those who work iniquity. He calls 'conspiracy' their concord and their agreement in wickedness, over which he prays to be shown the stronger, being fenced about by the divine protection as by a wall.
1:4141
Then he recounts their manifold contrivances.
1:4142
他們磨快自己的舌頭如刀劍;
Who have sharpened their tongues like a sword;
1:4143
they have bent their bow, a bitter thing.
1:4144
To shoot down the blameless in secret places. 'They stitch together slanders,' he says, 'for the war being contrived against me;'
1:4145
and this though I have furnished them no cause.
1:4146
For here by 'blameless' he means the guiltless one.
1:4147
至於「一件苦毒的事」,亞居拉譯作「苦毒的話語」;
And the phrase 'a bitter thing' Aquila rendered 'a bitter word;'
1:4148
提阿多田譯作「苦毒的言論」;
and Theodotion, 'a bitter speech;'
1:4149
and Symmachus, 'They filled their bow, a bitter word.'
1:4150
至於「在暗中」,西馬庫譯作「隱密地」;
And the phrase 'in secret places' Symmachus rendered as 'secretly;'
1:4151
that is, employing ambushes and snares.
1:4152
And this the following words also teach.
1:4153
Suddenly they will shoot him down, and they will not be afraid. 'Lying in wait,' he says, 'they will attack suddenly, having no dread of the God who watches over all.'
1:4154
他們為自己堅定了惡念;
They strengthened for themselves an evil purpose;
1:4155
他們商議暗設網羅。這一點西馬庫說得更為明白;
they told of hiding snares. This Symmachus stated more plainly;
1:4156
They confirmed an evil purpose, they proposed to hide snares.
1:4157
因為他們謀劃我的死亡,彼此商議並謀算當用怎樣的詭計來害我,並以行動證實他們的話語;
For in contriving my death, they proposed and took counsel together as to what devices they must use against me, and by the deed they confirmed their words;
1:4158
and they dare these things, supposing that God takes no thought of human affairs.
1:4159
因為接下來的話語顯明了這一點;
For this is what the following words make clear;
1:4160
Who shall see them? 'They suppose,' he says, 'that there is no judge of the things that are done.'
1:4161
〔這一方面適用於押沙龍、掃羅一黨以及其餘的人;
[This applies on the one hand to those around Absalom and Saul and the rest;
1:4162
and on the other hand also to the lawless men who from time to time have devised machinations and snares against the Churches of God.
1:4163
ζʹ
And note what he says in what follows.] 7.
1:4164
They searched out iniquity, they failed in their searching out of searchings. 'They set every calculation in motion,' he says;
1:4165
'they devised every contrivance against me;'
1:4166
they left no form of plotting undone, openly assailing, secretly lying in ambush, employing spies, roaming the deserts, searching through the rocky regions [seeking out in mountains and caves and the holes of the earth the athletes of godliness, concerning whom the divine Paul declares, of whom the world was not worthy].
1:4167
Man shall draw near, and the heart is deep.
1:4168
[ ηʹ .]
〔八。〕神必被高舉。這一點提阿多田解釋得更為明白;
[8.] And God shall be exalted. This Theodotion interpreted more plainly;
1:4169
And the mind of man, and the deep heart, God shall shoot down.
1:4170
因為縱使他們千萬次地隱藏其圖謀,這些事在那鑒察萬事的神面前仍是顯明的;
For though they hide their designs ten thousand times over, these things are manifest to the God who watches over all;
1:4171
He shows His own exaltation, exacting punishment from such men.
1:4172
Their wounds became the arrow of infants.
1:4173
[θʹ .]
[9.] And their tongues were made feeble against them. Yet, even employing such great cunning, they missed their aim.
1:4174
因為正如極幼小的孩童所射的箭,對被射中的人毫無傷害,這些人的舌頭也照樣未曾傷害那些被攻擊的人;
For just as the arrows shot by very young children bring no harm to those they strike, so the tongues of these men did not injure those at whom they were aimed;
1:4175
but the injury has come upon those who shot them.
1:4176
All who beheld them were troubled. And those who saw them failing in their undertakings will be, or were, filled with tumult and dread, and marvelled at the divine providence.
1:4177
For this is what the following words make clear.
1:4178
眾人都懼怕,並且傳揚神的作為;
And every man feared, and they proclaimed the works of God;
1:4179
and they understood His deeds. For coming to a clear perception of God's providential care, they feared the divine tribunal.
1:4180
And all the upright in heart shall be praised. And those who direct their reasoning towards God, and who cannot bear to walk outside the straight path, shall reap glory even from men.
1:4181
I mean the prize-bearing martyrs and the athletes of godliness.] INTERPRETATION.
1:4182
耶利米與以西結,以及寄居之民的一首歌,正當他們將要出去的時候。在某些抄本中加上:「耶利米與以西結,以及寄居之民的一首歌,正當他們將要出去的時候。」這既非希伯來文本所有,也非其他譯者所有,亦非《六欄合參》中的七十士譯本所有;
A song of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, and of the people of the sojourning, when they were about to go forth. In some copies there is added, 'A song of Jeremiah and Ezekiel, and of the people of the sojourning, when they were about to go forth.' This neither the Hebrew has, nor the other translators, nor the Seventy in the Hexapla;
1:4183
but someone, as it seems, added this heading, having attended neither to the meaning of the psalm nor learned the history.
1:4184
因為首先,耶利米並未參與那次被擄;
For, in the first place, Jeremiah had no share in the captivity;
1:4185
but having been given the choice to live wherever he wished, he chose to dwell in his homeland.
1:4186
因此這絲毫不適合那些出去被擄的人;
Hence it in no way fits those going forth into captivity;
1:4187
but rather those who were dwelling in captivity.
1:4188
因為他們遠離本鄉,切望歌頌神,卻被律法攔阻不能如此行;
For being far from their homeland, and longing to hymn God, yet prevented by the Law from doing this;
1:4189
for theirs is the utterance, 'How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?' they said, entreating God in Babylon.
1:4190
To You praise is due, O God, in Zion, and to You shall a vow be rendered in Jerusalem.
1:4191
Hear my prayer; to You shall all flesh come. And all the sayings of the psalm are suited to those living in Babylon.
1:4192
For these, yearning for their return, offered up this hymnody to God.
1:4193
And with the foretelling concerning these there is intermingled also the prophecy of the salvation of the Gentiles.
1:4194
To You praise is due, O God, in Zion, and to You shall a vow be rendered in Jerusalem. 'In that city,' he says, 'You commanded that praise be offered to You;'
1:4195
'there, then, I entreat that this be rendered to You.'
1:4196
〔論到這事,蒙福的保羅對外邦人說;
[And concerning this the blessed Paul spoke to the Gentiles;
1:4197
You have come to Mount Zion, and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem.
1:4198
〔這一方面是那從耶路撒冷被擄去的百姓在禱告中呼求的;
[This, on the one hand, the people carried off from Jerusalem cry out in prayer;
1:4199
另一方面也是那急切要逃脫偶像之奴役的人所懇求的;
this, on the other hand, is also entreated by him who presses on to escape from the captivity of idols;
1:4200
and he stated it more plainly in what follows, when he said:] To You shall all flesh come. This holds a clear foretelling of the Gentiles' knowledge of God.
1:4201
For now, he says, we entreat that we may obtain our return, and that in the temple consecrated to Thee we may offer up our hymn.
1:4202
The words of the lawless have overpowered us. But Symmachus renders it thus:
1:4203
The words of the lawless have oppressed me.
1:4204
Then he teaches the cause of their servitude.
1:4205
「禰必赦免我們的不敬虔。」他說,我被判定為奴並非不公,乃是因著我從前所膽敢犯下的不敬虔之罪;
And Thou wilt be propitiated toward our impieties. I was not condemned to servitude unjustly, he says, but because of the impiety I once dared to commit;
1:4206
and I beseech to be delivered from it through Thy loving-kindness.
1:4207
Hence they count blessed the manner of life in their homeland, as a teacher and provider of godliness.
1:4208
「禰所揀選、所接納的人便為有福;
Blessed is he whom Thou hast chosen and taken to Thyself;
1:4209
he shall dwell in Thy courts; we shall be filled with the good things of Thy house.
1:4210
Enviable, he says, and blessed is the people whom Thou hast honoured above the other nations.
1:4211
For by abiding constantly at Thy sacred courts, it reaps thence benefit and blessing.
1:4212
[verse 6.] Wonderful in righteousness. For Thy temple is full of sanctification, and it teaches those who draw near Thy righteousness through Thine oracles.
1:4213
「神啊,我們的救主,求禰應允我們;
Hearken to us, O God our Saviour;
1:4214
禰是地上眾人之望,也是海角遠方之人的盼望。」他在此再度預言普世的救恩,並使人想起族長雅各的預言;
the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of those who are far off upon the sea. Here again he foretells the salvation of the whole world, and calls to mind the prophecy of the patriarch Jacob;
1:4215
for it is his saying: The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a ruler from his loins, until He come to whom it is laid up, and He is the expectation of the nations. Him also here he called the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of those who are far off upon the sea. And by these words he signifies both those dwelling in the islands and the men upon the continents lying opposite, and those allotted to inhabit the uttermost bounds of the inhabited world.
1:4216
Hearken to us, he says, O Thou who a little later dost illumine the whole nature of mankind with the light of the knowledge of God.
1:4217
Then, so far as is possible, he recounts the power of God.
1:4218
Who preparest the mountains by His strength;
1:4219
being girded about with might.
