'The Lord shall give a word to them that preach good tidings with great power.' Those whom above he called living creatures, here he names evangelists.
1:4483
And since they were fishermen and tax-collectors and leather-workers, yet were appointed teachers of philosophers, sophists, orators, and of those who plume themselves upon their eloquence, he fittingly teaches from what source they draw the streams of their teaching and offer its irrigation.
1:4484
'The King of the powers of the beloved, to divide the spoils by the beauty of Thy house.' But Symmachus renders it thus:
1:4485
'The Lord gave utterances to them that preach good tidings with a great host.'
1:4486
'The kings of the hosts were beloved.'
1:4487
They became beloved, and the household of the house shall distribute the spoils.
1:4488
By 'a great host' he means those who have believed.
1:4489
So too the Apostle, writing to Timothy, says:
1:4490
'Fight the good fight.' And:
1:4491
'No one serving as a soldier entangles himself in the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.' And by 'kings of hosts' he named their teachers,
1:4492
whom he says were loved and are called beloved.
1:4493
Thus also the Lord calls them:
1:4494
'I will no longer call you servants, but friends.' So too the divine Apostle says:
1:4495
'For the love of God constrains us.' And:
1:4496
'Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?' And by 'spoils' he means those who in former times had made their own members slaves to sin and had given them over into bondage to the devil.
1:4497
These he distributed among the holy apostles,
1:4498
setting up one as teacher of the Romans, another of the Greeks,
1:4499
and appointing some as heralds to the Indians, others to the Egyptians.
1:4500
These are the spoils which the beauty of the house distributed to the holy apostles.
1:4501
And the house of God, according to the divine Apostle, is those who have believed.
1:4502
And the beauty of the house is the grace of the Holy Spirit, which adorns and makes it splendid with the manifold bounty of its gifts.
1:4503
And this he taught more clearly through what follows.
1:4504
'Though ye have lain among the lots, ye shall be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her hinder parts with the greenness of gold.' By 'the wings of a dove' he means the grace of the Spirit.
1:4505
For in the form of a dove it descended over the streams of the Jordan.
1:4506
Of this dove he says the wings are covered with silver,
1:4507
and the hinder parts are adorned with gold.
1:4508
For the simpler and easier things he offers to the simpler,
1:4509
but to the more perfect the deeper things.
1:4510
「因為我的奧祕是為我自己並屬我的人存留的。」祂給一些人喝奶,因他們尚未成全;
'For my mysteries are for me and for mine.' And to some, as being imperfect, he gives milk to drink;
1:4511
but to others he offers solid food.
1:4512
And by 'lots' he means the two covenants.
1:4513
He says therefore that in each teaching, 'Draw near and behold the manifold grace of the Holy Spirit.'
1:4514
Yet he commanded not merely to draw near, but also to abide there continually.
1:4515
因為他把這事稱作「臥下」;
For this he called 'to lie down';
1:4516
since one who sleeps remains motionless.
1:4517
「當那位屬天者在她之上分立諸王的時候,他們必在撒們變白如雪。」他在前面也稱使徒為君王,因他們是天國的後嗣;
'When the Heavenly One separates kings over her, they shall be made white as snow in Selmon.' Above too he called the apostles kings, as heirs of the kingdom of heaven;
1:4518
正如他在第四十四篇詩篇中稱他們為官長;
just as in the forty-fourth Psalm he addressed them as rulers;
1:4519
'For thou shalt make them,' he says, 'rulers over all the earth.'
1:4520
He foretells the descent of the all-holy Spirit which took place on the day of Pentecost, on which they received the grace of the diversity of tongues.
1:4521
所以他說,在那時候,當祂把普世的權柄分派給他們,命這一位管理這些民族、那一位管理那些民族的時候,祂必使他們發光,顯得如雪一般;
He says therefore that at that time, in which He divides among them the empire of the inhabited world, and commands the one to rule over these nations, the other over those, He will make them radiant and show them like unto snow;
1:4522
and he foretells also the place in which these things shall come to pass.
1:4523
因為他以「撒們」來稱呼耶路撒冷;
For by 'Selmon' he named Jerusalem;
1:4524
for it was while dwelling in that city that the choir of the apostles enjoyed the grace of the all-holy Spirit.
1:4525
'The mountain of God, a fat mountain, a curdled mountain, a fat mountain.' Those whom he called living creatures, and evangelists, and kings, he also names a mountain.
1:4526
So too the Lord said in the holy Gospels:
1:4527
'A city set on a hill cannot be hid'; and so too Isaiah cries aloud:
1:4528
'It shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the Lord shall be manifest.' And he calls it 'fat' and 'curdled,' as furnishing abundant nourishment to the flocks that feed upon it, and as having received much richness from the divine grace.
1:4529
'Why do ye suppose there are curdled mountains? This is the mountain in which God was well pleased to dwell.' But Aquila renders it thus:
1:4530
'Wherefore do ye contend, ye high-browed mountains, over the mountain which God desired to sit upon?' The prophetic word is directed against the Jews and against the lawless assemblies of the heretics,
1:4531
他們自稱為教會;
who call themselves Churches;
1:4532
他說:你們為何要誇口,與神所宣告為祂居所的那山爭競、自比同等呢?「因為主必永遠住在那裡。」因為祂不像在你們中間那樣,猶太人哪,只住了一段定期,祂在此地卻不是這樣過的;
and he says: Why do ye boast, contending and setting yourselves as equals against the mountain which God declared to be His dwelling-place? 'For indeed the Lord shall dwell there for ever.' For not as among you, O Jews, where He dwelt for a certain fixed time, will He so pass His time in this place;
1:4533
but He shall have His dwelling in this place eternally.
1:4534
For this is what the phrase 'for ever' signifies.
1:4535
「神的車輦累萬盈千,是那繁盛興旺者的千千萬萬。」因為祂不像在你們中間那樣,猶太人哪,只有少數聖徒,是祂所乘駕、所交通的,如今卻不是這樣;
'The chariot of God is ten-thousand-fold, thousands of them that flourish.' For not as among you, O Jews, where He had few saints upon whom He mounted and with whom He had fellowship, will He now possess them;
1:4536
for ten thousand times more than those are they who are worthy of the divine mounting.
1:4537
And the new inheritance possesses thousands and myriads beyond number, flourishing and bearing to God the fruit of godliness, guided aright and deemed worthy of the crowns, and pressing on toward the prize of the upward calling.
1:4538
'The Lord is among them, in Sinai, in the holy place.' He who appeared, he says, in Sinai to our forefathers, He Himself also guides these as a charioteer.
1:4539
For that One and this One are not different.
1:4540
'For the same Lord is Lord of all, rich unto all that call upon Him.' Having thus shown the prophetic word that He had descended and destroyed the throng of the enemies, it shows Him ascending and bestowing freedom upon those who of old had been captives.
1:4541
「祢已升上高天,擄掠了仇敵。」升上必含降下之意;
'Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive.' The ascent implies the descent;
1:4542
and the Apostle is witness, saying:
1:4543
「既說升上,豈不是先降在地下的境界麼?那降下的,就是遠升諸天之上的,好叫祂充滿萬有。」祂擄掠了仇敵,是把那些從前被擄的人奪回;
'Now what does "He ascended" mean, except that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He that descended is the same also that ascended far above all the heavens.' And He led captivity captive, taking back those who of old had been made captives;
1:4544
and as it were taking captives in return, and bestowing freedom upon them.
1:4545
「祢在人間受了恩賜。」使徒卻說「賜下」;
'Thou hast received gifts among men.' The Apostle said 'gave';
1:4546
for receiving faith from those who draw near, He bestows grace.
1:4547
﹝因為使徒的行列正是如此,既信了祂是出於神的神,便被顯明為天國的後嗣;
[For thus the choir of the apostles, having believed that He is God of God, was shown forth as heir of the kingdom of heaven;
1:4548
so too myriads of the prize-winners and of those who lived nobly in their conduct were glorified for making their discourse on God's behalf.] 'For even the disobedient, that they might dwell there.' This Aquila rendered more clearly, 'even the rebellious, that they might dwell there.'
1:4549
他說:「祢並沒有顧念他們先前的悖逆;
'Thou didst not look,' he says, 'upon their former disobedience;
1:4550
but even seeing them speak against Thee, Thou didst persist in doing them good, until Thou madest them Thine own dwelling-place.'
1:4551
'Blessed be the Lord day by day.' Fittingly did the Prophet stir his tongue to hymn-singing.
1:4552
You are righteous, he says, in being ever hymned, having shown such great love for mankind.
1:4553
He who bestowed this will also smooth the road for us, so that we may not fail to attain such great good things.
1:4554
'Our God is the God of salvation.' He will provide this, being himself the fountain of salvation.
1:4555
'And to the Lord, the Lord, belong the goings-forth of death.' For he himself has opened for us the very prison of death from which there was no way out, and has shattered the gates of brass and broken in pieces the bars of iron.
1:4556
And this he made clear through what follows:
1:4557
'But God shall shatter the heads of his enemies,'
1:4558
'the hairy crown of those who go on in their trespasses.' He has opened for us the doors of death, he says, by shattering the heads of the enemies who scrutinize the trespasses of men and will not endure to leave even the hairs of the head unexamined.
1:4559
By 'the hair' he means the very smallest trespass.
1:4560
What he means is this:
1:4561
For those who sin, God has appointed death as the penalty.
1:4562
For this the Lord also declared in the holy Gospels:
1:4563
'The ruler of this world comes, and in me he will find nothing.' Yet, though he found nothing, he unjustly handed him over to death.
1:4564
這樁不義之舉瓦解了那惡者的權勢,卻為世人打開了陰間;
This injustice dissolved that one's dominion, and opened Hades for men;
1:4565
these things have been more fully spoken of in the discourses On Providence.
1:4566
And the divine Apostle too said that the devil holds the power of death.
1:4567
'... I will bring back from the depths of the sea.' But Symmachus renders it thus:
1:4568
'The Lord said, From Bashan I will bring them back, from the depths of the sea.'
1:4569
Bashan, when interpreted, signifies shame.
1:4570
And shame is the fruit of sin.
1:4571
那麼,萬有的神必從這羞恥中把我們帶回;
From this, then, the God of all things will bring us back;
1:4572
and from the depths of the sea.
1:4573
What the depth of the sea is, the Prophet himself teaches,
1:4574
crying out: 'Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and from the deep waters. [Let not the tempest of water drown me, nor the deep swallow me up.]' (v. 24)
1:4575
'That your foot may be dipped in blood;'
1:4576
'that the tongue of your dogs may have its portion from the enemies from him.' But Symmachus renders thus:
1:4577
'That your foot may be broken together with blood, and the tongue of your dogs may lap from each of your enemies.'
1:4578
For since he has shown the God of all things, like some valiant champion, vanquishing the foe and setting free those unjustly enslaved, he depicts in words both the streams of blood, and the corpses trampled underfoot, and these cast out unburied and set as food for the dogs.
1:4579
'I have trodden the winepress all alone, and of the nations there was none with me;'
1:4580
'I trod them down in my fury, [and I crushed them in my wrath,] and I brought down their blood to the earth;'
1:4581
'and all my garments were sprinkled with their utter defeat.' (v. 25)
1:4582
'Your goings have been seen, O God;'
1:4583
'the princes went in front, close after them the singers, in the midst of maidens playing timbrels.' Henceforth, then, he teaches the joy of the Churches.
1:4584
By 'princes' he calls the holy apostles, as having become the master-builders of these Churches; and by 'maidens playing timbrels,' those who practice virginity and offer up divine melody to God. Then he makes what has been said clearer.
1:4585
「你們當在各會眾中稱頌神,就是從以色列源頭而出的主。」他指出了舊約的止息;
'In the congregations bless God, the Lord, from the fountains of Israel.' He indicated the cessation of the old covenant;
1:4586
因為猶太人的聖殿只有一座;
for the temple of the Jews was but one;
1:4587
但在此他預言眾教會的繁多;
but here he prophesies the multitude of the churches;
1:4588
in which he commands the Lord of all things to be hymned from the fountains of Israel.
1:4589
And the prophetic books might fittingly be called the fountains of Israel, from which we offer melody to God.
1:4590
... he bestowed fountains, and fittingly he adds:
1:4591
'There is Benjamin the younger in ecstasy.' But Aquila renders, 'There is Benjamin the small, having dominion over them;'
1:4592
and according to Theodotion, 'their instructor.'
1:4593
而「最年少的便雅憫」乃是有福的保羅,他是從便雅憫支派而出的;
And Benjamin the younger is the blessed Paul, who sprang from the tribe of Benjamin;
1:4594
說他「年少」,是因他在眾人之後才蒙召、被稱呼;
'younger,' as having been called and named after all the rest;
1:4595
and besides, the history of the Acts also calls him a young man.
1:4596
This one has dominion over the Church, and teaches divine things, and guides toward salvation those who are willing.
1:4597
And he too came to be in ecstasy, learning that the one whom he was persecuting, and who was reckoned dead, was in the heavens.
1:4598
And since not only the blessed Paul, but also the rest of the choir of the apostles, instruct believers in divine things, the prophetic word fittingly made mention of these also.
1:4599
'The princes of Judah are their leaders, the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali.' For from these tribes the rest of the apostles traced their descent.
1:4600
And those called the brethren of the Lord had, in every case, the tribe of Judah as their source.
1:4601
But Peter, and Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip happened to be from the village of Bethsaida.
1:4602
And Matthew and James are recorded as living in Capernaum.
1:4603
Simon has been named the Zealot, the Canaanite.
1:4604
And all these are districts of Galilee.
1:4605
西布倫和拿弗他利曾承受那分地業;
And Zebulun and Naphtali had that inheritance;
1:4606
一位是先知,一位是傳福音者;
the one a prophet, the other an evangelist;
1:4607
the one foretelling, the other bringing forward the testimony.
1:4608
'The land of Zebulun, and the land of Naphtali, and the rest who dwell by the sea-coast, and beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations;'
1:4609
'the people who sat in darkness saw a great light.' (vv. 29, 30)
1:4610
'Command, O God, your power;'
1:4611
'strengthen, O God, this which you have wrought in us.'
1:4612
'From your temple over Jerusalem.' But Symmachus renders thus:
1:4613
'Ordain, O God, concerning your strength;'
1:4614
'strengthen, O God, this which you have done for us, on account of your temple which is above Jerusalem.'
1:4615
'... whom you have set above all rule, and authority, and power, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come.'
1:4616
For by 'Jerusalem' he calls the city above, concerning which the blessed Paul says:
1:4617
'But the Jerusalem which is above is free;'
1:4618
「她是我們眾人的母親。」因此他們因與那殿的親屬關係,求所賜的恩典得以堅立;
'she is the mother of us all.' They ask, therefore, on account of their kinship with the temple, that the grace which has been given may be confirmed;
1:4619
and, on account of the firstfruits, that the whole lump may enjoy the gift that has been bestowed.
1:4620
From here he goes on also to foretell the change of the kings.
1:4621
'To Thee shall kings offer gifts.' For having ceased from persecuting, they shall render Him, as to God, the veneration that is fitting.
1:4622
And just as they themselves receive tribute from their subjects, so they in turn, like slaves and subjects, shall bring gifts to Thee.
1:4623
And witnesses of this are the eyes that behold the truth of the prophecy.
1:4624
'Rebuke the wild beasts of the reed.' Some of the copies have 'of the thicket.'
1:4625
But whether thicket or reed, by these unfruitfulness is signified.
1:4626
These places have as their dwelling the senseless beasts, which the Prophet taught us to drive out through the divine invocation.
1:4627
「公牛的群集在眾民的母牛犢之間,為要把那些被試驗如銀子的人關閉起來。」他以「公牛」稱呼猶太人的群眾,是因他們慣常的狂傲;
'The assembly of the bulls among the heifers of the peoples, that they that have been tried may be shut in with silver.' By 'bulls' he calls the multitude of the Jews, on account of their habitual insolence;
1:4628
and 'heifers of the peoples' he named those from among the nations who had believed, because of the newness of their calling.
1:4629
The prophetic word therefore foretells the risings-up that were made at the beginning of the preaching against the godly among the Jews.
1:4630
'This they do,' he says, 'wishing to shut them out and to deprive them of the good fortune that has been granted;'
1:4631
who, having been tried like silver in the fire, were declared approved.
1:4632
This the blessed Paul also said concerning them:
1:4633
'but they wish to shut you out.' And since among the nations too there were those who spoke against and who wrought manifold slaughters of the saints, he fittingly says concerning these also:
1:4634
'Ambassadors shall come out of Egypt.' He mentioned Egypt first, as having of old bound upon itself the dominion of impiety.
1:4635
The history of the Acts also makes mention of them, recounting those who were gathered together on the day of Pentecost, on which the grace of the all-holy Spirit came upon the apostles.
1:4636
'Ethiopia shall stretch out her hand first unto God.' This too has attained fulfilment.
1:4637
And witness is the eunuch of Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, whom Philip guided to the truth.
1:4638
Then he calls upon the kingdoms of the whole inhabited world.
1:4639
'Ye kingdoms of the earth, sing unto God;'
1:4640
'sing praises unto the Lord.' 'All ye,' he says, 'throughout the inhabited world, receive the light of the knowledge of God;'
1:4641
and offer up the hymnody on behalf of true religion.
1:4642
'For remain,' He says, 'in this city, until ye be clothed with power from on high.' Of this saying the blessed Luke also makes mention, saying:
1:4643
'And there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the house where they were sitting.' (35)
1:4644
'Upon Israel is His magnificence;'
1:4645
「祂的能力在雲彩之中。」因為聖使徒既是從以色列出的族類,就藉著他們所行的神蹟,顯明了神的大能作為;
'and His power is in the clouds.' For the sacred apostles, deriving their race from Israel, showed forth the mighty work of God through the miracles which they wrought;
1:4646
and those after them, having received the gift of teaching, like certain clouds drawing up the rain from the sea of the all-holy Spirit, bring the watering to men.
1:4647
'Wonderful is God in His saints.' 'And all others too,' he says, 'the lovers of virtue, cause God to be hymned, according to the word of the Lord which says:'
1:4648
「你們的光當在人前照耀,叫他們看見你們的善行,便將榮耀歸給你們在天上的父。」——「以色列的神,祂必將能力和剛強賜給祂的子民。」他在此提及以色列並非無故;
'Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.' — 'The God of Israel, He shall give power and strength unto His people.' Not without purpose did he here make mention of Israel;
1:4649
but because Jacob, having feared Esau, then, being deemed worthy of the divine manifestation, was strengthened, and cast out the dread from his mind.
1:4650
'Blessed be God.' [But hearing, O most eager for learning, God, and God called Lord and Saviour so often, do not suppose another.
1:4651
因為除了父、子、聖靈之外,實在沒有,實在沒有別的了;
For there is not, there is not, any save only the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit;
1:4652
for it was fitting that the narration of so great blessings should be brought to its close with a divine hymn.
1:4653
'For the end, on behalf of those that shall be changed.'
1:4654
因為這篇是論到那些被擄遷往巴比倫的猶太人所說的;
For it has been spoken concerning the Jews who were carried away as exiles to Babylon;
1:4655
and it is framed as though from those who pray and ask for deliverance.
1:4656
— deliverance, and the return, and the rebuilding of Jerusalem, and, in a word, the former prosperity of Judea.
1:4657
It contains also a prophecy of the sufferings of the Master — I mean of our God and Saviour — and of the utter destruction that on their account was to overtake the Jews.
1:4658
For since what they had endured from their adversaries, these very things they dared to do against their Benefactor and Saviour, the things they had imprecated upon their enemies, these same the righteous Judge decreed against them.
1:4659
'Save me, O God, for the waters are come in even unto my soul.' The company of the more godly offers up the supplication.
1:4660
By 'waters' he calls the multitude of calamities.
1:4661
'On every side,' he says, 'I am flooded over by grievous things.'
1:4662
'I am sunk in the mire of the deep, and there is no footing.' But Symmachus:
1:4663
'I was plunged into boundless depths, and there is no standing-place;'
1:4664
the image being taken from those who fall into the deep of the sea, and are borne down to the uttermost, and scarcely reach the bottom.
1:4665
'I am come into the depths of the sea, and a tempest hath overwhelmed me.' He varies the discourse with the different images, not finding an image worthy of the grievous things that beset him.
1:4666
By 'crying out' he means the intensity of the prayer that is in the mind.
1:4667
'Mine eyes have failed from my hoping upon my God.' He has set this too by way of metaphor, drawn from those who await someone familiar and known returning from a journey abroad, and keep looking along the roads.
1:4668
'I have grown weary,' he says, 'in awaiting Thy help.'
1:4669
Then the things which above he had set forth figuratively, he teaches more plainly.
1:4670
'They that hate me without a cause are multiplied above the hairs of my head.'
1:4671
'My enemies who unjustly persecute me are grown strong.' But let none of the more studious suppose that these things are spoken in the person of God and Saviour.
1:4672
For it has not been said, it has not been said, save in the person — as has been sketched by us above — of those who were carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon.
1:4673
And he says that: The adversaries surpass even in number, and are girt about with power, and are hostile toward me, though I have given no cause for the hatred.
1:4674
'What I did not seize, then I repaid.' 'For things in which I did no wrong, I am exacted penalties.'
1:4675
'For it is not as a robber, or as having done wrong,' says the people, 'that I have been carried off captive by them.'
1:4676
'O God, Thou knowest my foolishness;'
1:4677
'Thou knowest therefore that against those men I committed no offence;'
1:4678
'but Thy laws have I transgressed.'
1:4679
To this is like the saying, 'Against Thee only have I sinned, and done that which is evil in Thy sight.' (7)
1:4680
'Let not them that wait on Thee be ashamed for my sake, O Lord, O Lord of hosts.'
1:4681
'Let not them that seek Thee be confounded for my sake, O God of Israel.' 'Let me not become,' he says, 'to others a pattern of harm, having waited indeed for the salvation from Thee, yet having failed of my hope in Thee.'
1:4682
'But let them learn, through the things that have befallen me — those who possess the knowledge of Thee — that Thou art the fruit of salvation, and not of shame, to those who hope in Thee.'
1:4683
'Because for Thy sake I have borne reproach;'
1:4684
'shame hath covered my face.' 'I am filled with shame, receiving the reproaches that are Thine;'
1:4685
'for the enemies continually mock me, calling my servitude Thy weakness.' (9)
1:4686
'I am become estranged unto my brethren, and a stranger unto my mother's sons.' He enumerates the occasions of his affliction, stirring up to mercy the God who loveth mankind.
1:4687
And first he set forth the reproaches of the impious, then the separation from kinsfolk and familiar acquaintances.
1:4688
For as captives, and constrained to serve, they were not permitted to pass their life according to kinship.
1:4689
'For the zeal of Thy house hath eaten me up;'
1:4690
'and the reproaches of them that reproach Thee are fallen upon me.' 'And not least do the desolation of Thy holy house, and the laughter of the impious, grieve and pain me.'
1:4691
For it is not to my own fault, but to your weakness, that they reckon the things done against him.
1:4692
By the blasphemies against you I am pierced through, as though I had become the occasion of them.
1:4693
Now Symmachus rendered it: 'It devoured me, it consumed me.'
1:4694
'And I covered my soul with fasting, and it became reproaches to me.' I chastened my soul with fasting, yet even this they turned into an occasion of insult against me.
1:4695
'And I made sackcloth my garment, and I became a byword to them.' Over these things I grieve, and I waste my body with fasting.
1:4696
But even this became for them an occasion of laughter.
1:4697
I wear myself out, clothing myself in the mournful garb by wrapping myself in sackcloth.
1:4698
And this too the transgressors took as a pretext for mockery. (v. 13)
1:4699
'They that sit in the gates talked against me, and they that drink wine made songs about me.' In gatherings and at banquets, he says, they babble of my misfortunes and turn them into comedy.
1:4700
For of old they used to hold their councils by the gates.
1:4701
'But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.' And Symmachus thus:
1:4702
'But my prayer is to you, O Lord.'
1:4703
While these things happen, he says, I fix my eye upon you and await the help that comes from you.
1:4704
'A time of good pleasure, O God.' And Symmachus thus: 'A time of reconciliation, O God.'
1:4705
Sufficient, he says, is the punishment that has been brought upon me.
1:4706
It is time for this to be loosed, and for your loving-kindness to be made manifest.
1:4707
For he calls the good will of God 'good pleasure.'
1:4708
'In the multitude of your mercy hear me,'
1:4709
'in the truth of your salvation.' Do not measure the punishment by my faults, but by the immeasurable mercy of your loving-kindness.
1:4710
But employ your true and righteous verdict against those who work so many evils against me.
1:4711
Then again in figurative terms he enumerates his calamities, striving by the narration to stir up compassion.
1:4712
「求你救我脫離淤泥,不叫我陷在其中。」我如同那些跌進泥沼坑中、瀕臨死亡的人;
'Save me from the mire, that I sink not.' I am like those who fall into a muddy pit and suffer death;
1:4713
therefore I ask salvation from you.
1:4714
'Let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.' I ask to be freed both from my enemies and from the evils that are brought on by them.
1:4715
For by 'the deep of the waters' he called the punishments brought upon him by them.
1:4716
'Let not the tempest of water drown me, neither let the deep swallow me up.' Let me not, he says, be submerged by the multitude and the magnitude of the evils.
1:4717
nor shut against me the door of your loving-kindness.
1:4718
因為那些跌進井裡的人,只要井口尚開著,還存有些微從中脫身的指望;
For those who fall into a well, while its mouth is open, have some small hope of deliverance from thence;
1:4719
but when this too is stopped up, they despair of salvation.
1:4720
'for your mercy is good.'
1:4721
Behold me, then, overwhelmed by evils, and loose my calamities.
1:4722
For your mere appearing suffices to scatter the cloud of sorrows.
1:4723
'Turn not away your face from your servant.' For this is what the angry are wont to do, shaking off the supplications of those who have sinned.
1:4724
'Attend to my soul, and redeem it.' For you suffice by your mere look to dissolve what is grievous.
1:4725
「求你因我仇敵的緣故拯救我。」我的過犯實在超過可赦免的地步;
'For the sake of my enemies deliver me.' My faults indeed exceed pardon;
1:4726
but my foes are impious, and are slaves to wickedness.
1:4727
For this too he made clear through what follows.
1:4728
'For you know my reproach, and my shame, and my confusion.'
1:4729
「一切苦待我的人都在你面前。」所發生的事沒有一件能瞞過你,你卻看見一切;
'All that afflict me are before you.' Nothing of what happens escapes you, but you see all things;
1:4730
無論是他們的辱罵,還是我的羞恥;
both their reproaches and my shame;
1:4731
for I am overwhelmed and grieved, being reproached by them.
1:4732
'My soul has looked for reproach and misery;'
1:4733
'and I waited for one to grieve with me, but there was none;'
1:4734
'and for comforters, but I found none.'
1:4735
For, assailed on every side by so many pains, and expecting yet others more grievous, I have no consolation.
1:4736
反倒是那些使我憂傷的人,數目眾多;
Rather, those who grieve me surpass in number;
1:4737
there is none to make my despondency lighter.
1:4738
'And they gave me gall for my food;'
1:4739
「我渴了,他們拿醋給我喝。」他說,他們連我的食物本身也弄得苦澀難堪;
'and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.' And even my very nourishment, he says, they made bitter and grievous;
1:4740
for to those who eat in pain, even the most delightful food is without pleasure.
1:4741
and may they fall into the very things they have done.
1:4742
因為他以「筵席」稱他們的歡樂;
For by 'table' he called their merriment;
1:4743
for so also Symmachus interpreted it:
1:4744
'Let their table before them become a snare, and a retribution, so that they be taken.'
1:4745
'Let their eyes be darkened, that they see not.' Bring upon them the gloomy cloud of calamities,
1:4746
that they may fall into the things they do, ever bowed down in toilsome labor.
1:4747
'Pour out your wrath upon them;'
1:4748
'and let the fury of your wrath overtake them.' Loose upon them, he says, all the anger of punishment, and bring on a swift and lasting calamity.
1:4749
而以「忿怒」表明那持久的性質;
and by 'wrath' the enduring quality;
1:4750
for such is the nature of wrath.
1:4751
For fury is sharp and short-lived, but wrath, though slower, is more abiding.
1:4752
By 'the fury of wrath,' then, he called the sharp and enduring punishment.
1:4753
'Let their habitation be made desolate;'
1:4754
and he entreats that they be subjected to the very things they have done.
1:4755
因為既然〔迦勒底人〕攻陷了耶路撒冷和猶太的其他城邑,使之荒涼,他便懇求叫他們自己的祖國也遭受這些事;
For since they had sacked Jerusalem and the other cities of Judaea and made them desolate [the Chaldeans], he entreats that their own homeland also suffer these things;
1:4756
and he obtained his request.
1:4757
因為巴比倫確已變為荒涼,並且直到今日仍是荒涼;
For Babylon has both become and remained desolate, even to this very day;
1:4758
yet one ought to know that the very things which the Jews asked the Babylonians to suffer — the Babylonians who had used impiety and wickedness against them — these things they themselves have suffered, having raged against their Benefactor and Saviour.
1:4759
因為巴比倫人使他們的食物變苦;
For the Babylonians made their food bitter for them;
1:4760
並非他們曾給了他們這樣的食物;
not that they had given them such food;
1:4761
But rather, by their toilsome slavery they took away the innate pleasure of food.
1:4762
But the Jews, though they suffered no wrong, but on the contrary received manifold benefactions, offered to their very Benefactor gall, and vinegar itself, like some vineyard that yields only harm.
1:4763
For this very reason they were subjected to those same punishments, and their table became a snare, and a recompense, and a stumbling-block.
1:4764
For in place of their former good fortune, they were condemned to slavery.
1:4765
And their eyes were darkened, since they could not bear to behold the true Light; and their back is perpetually bent beneath slavery and poverty, because of their haughty neck and their stiff throat.
1:4766
And their habitation became desolate, and in the dwellings of Jerusalem none of them dwells.
1:4767
Therefore they were subjected to their own curses.
1:4768
And the very things which, when they were wronged, they had imprecated upon the Babylonians, these they themselves suffered when they had done wrong and had proved ungrateful toward their Benefactor.
1:4769
For this reason the divine apostles also made use of the testimonies drawn from this passage, understanding the twofold character of the prophecy.
1:4770
