This too the historical narrative teaches:
1:1054⧉ ⤴︎
For indeed, had he been called to account for the numbering, he would have said: 'You yourself commanded that they be numbered.'
1:1055⧉ ⤴︎
But instead he confessed that he had sinned.
1:1056⧉ ⤴︎
For indeed, when he had resolved to build the divine temple, God made it clear to him through the prophet Nathan that he should resolve on no such thing, but should reserve the care of the building for his son.
1:1057⧉ ⤴︎
That this thought arose in him not by God's operation but by His permission, the book of Chronicles teaches more clearly.
1:1058⧉ ⤴︎
……這樣的心思是與應許相違背的(因為萬有之神曾對亞伯拉罕說:『我必使你的後裔如同海邊的沙塵,多得不可勝數』);因此便稱這樣的心思為『撒但』,因它與神聖的應許相反;
...to the promises did such a thought stand opposed (for the God of all said to Abraham, 'I will make your seed as the sand which is upon the shore of the sea, which shall not be numbered for multitude'); therefore it named such a thought 'Satan,' as being contrary to the divine promise;
1:1059⧉ ⤴︎
but it was for the punishment of Israel that such a thought came to be,
1:1060⧉ ⤴︎
since, though able to prevent it, He did not prevent it, wishing thereby to chasten the transgressors of the law.
1:1061⧉ ⤴︎
首先,祂願意提醒他們那向列祖所立的應許,並要顯明這應許的真實;
And first He willed to remind them of the promise made to their fathers, and to demonstrate its truth;
1:1062⧉ ⤴︎
then to teach that from Jacob alone so many tens of thousands had come to be, and that, though they had obtained so great a benefit, they had always displayed a wicked disposition.
1:1063⧉ ⤴︎
為此緣故,祂首先容許他們被數點;
For this reason He first permitted them to be numbered;
1:1064⧉ ⤴︎
and then punished them thus, sending the prophet Gad to the one who had numbered them, to set before him three choices:
1:1065⧉ ⤴︎
或是延續三年的饑荒,或是敵人猛烈進犯、連勝三個月並窮追不捨,或是三日之內因瘟疫而來的死亡;
either a famine measured out over three years, or an invasion of enemies for three months, conquering by force and pursuing, or death by pestilence occurring within three days;
1:1066⧉ ⤴︎
先知說完這些話後,便催促這位身兼先知與君王的人趕快作出答覆;
and having said these things, the prophet urged the prophet-king to give his answer quickly;
1:1067⧉ ⤴︎
'And now,' he says, 'know and see what word I shall answer to him who sent me.' But the most wise and most just king, reasoning that he himself, as king, could escape the famine, having much grain stored up,
1:1068⧉ ⤴︎
而懲罰卻將單單落在窮人身上;
and that the punishment would fall on the poor alone;
1:1069⧉ ⤴︎
又想到在戰爭中,他也能躲過敵人之手:首先可倚仗最堅固、最難攻陷的堡壘,其次又可讓那些驍勇善戰之士環繞護衛;
and that in war too he could escape the hands of the enemy, first by making use of the strongest and most impregnable fortresses, and then by surrounding himself with his most valiant men;
1:1070⧉ ⤴︎
他卻不認為只顧自己得救是公義的,反倒選擇與百姓一同承受所加的刑罰;
did not think it right to take thought for his own safety, but chose to share in the punishments inflicted upon the people;
1:1071⧉ ⤴︎
因為瘟疫本是這樣:不分貧富,也不分懦弱與勇敢;
for such is pestilence, knowing no distinction between rich and poor, nor between coward and brave;
1:1072⧉ ⤴︎
也不分奴僕與主人,不分平民與君王;
nor between slave and master, nor between commoner and king;
1:1073⧉ ⤴︎
but advances against all alike.
1:1074⧉ ⤴︎
為此緣故,他寧可選擇這懲罰,勝過其餘兩者,因為施行懲治、分配刑罰的乃是神自己;
For this reason he preferred this punishment above the others, since it is He Himself who is the dispenser of its chastisement;
1:1075⧉ ⤴︎
'All three are exceedingly distressing to me.'
1:1076⧉ ⤴︎
'Yet let me fall into the hands of the Lord;'
1:1077⧉ ⤴︎
'for His mercies are exceedingly many;'
1:1078⧉ ⤴︎
'but into the hands of men let me not fall.'
1:1079⧉ ⤴︎
For though God had threatened death for three days, He brought the death in only six hours.
1:1080⧉ ⤴︎
And when the nights are reckoned together with the days, it is found that only the twelfth part of the threatened punishment was brought upon the people.
1:1081⧉ ⤴︎
Thus the loving Lord employs greater threats to frighten sinners,
1:1082⧉ ⤴︎
but inflicts punishments far lesser than the threats.
1:1083⧉ ⤴︎
For indeed, though there were found nine hundred thousand of Israel, and four hundred thousand of Judah—that is, of those of age for military service, with those below and above that age, and indeed also women, being excluded, and moreover the Levites and the tribe of Benjamin as well—
1:1084⧉ ⤴︎
因為王已經後悔,所以這兩支派未被數點;
for since the king repented, they were not numbered;
1:1085⧉ ⤴︎
卻僅有七萬人被那天使所殺;
only seventy thousand were slain by the angel;
1:1086⧉ ⤴︎
and this though all of them could have been destroyed in an instant.
1:1087⧉ ⤴︎
For the punishing angel had no need of time.
1:1088⧉ ⤴︎
For in an instant he slew both the firstborn of the Egyptians, and the hundred and eighty-five thousand of the Assyrians.
1:1089⧉ ⤴︎
Worthy of admiration too are the king's own words:
1:1090⧉ ⤴︎
他說:『看哪,是我犯了罪,是我這牧人行了惡事;這群羊,他們做了甚麼呢?願你的手臨到我和我父的家。』他不知道真正的緣由,便將所發生的事稱為自己的罪;
'Behold,' he says, 'I have sinned, and I the shepherd have done wickedly; but these, the flock, what have they done? Let Your hand be against me, and against my father's house.' Being ignorant of the true cause, he called what had happened his own sin;
1:1091⧉ ⤴︎
and he entreated that a just sentence be brought upon himself and his family, using the words of a true shepherd, and imitating his son and Lord, who laid down His own life for the sheep.
1:1092⧉ ⤴︎
As for the phrase, 'The Lord repented,' it is superfluous to interpret it,
1:1093⧉ ⤴︎
for we have often stated its meaning, namely that it signifies a change in the divine dispensation.
1:1094⧉ ⤴︎
At once, then, the king ran and asked Ornan the Jebusite to sell him the threshing floor.
1:1095⧉ ⤴︎
But when he promised to give the threshing floor, the oxen, and the wood of the plows as a free gift—so that on the former he might build the altar, sacrifice the latter, and bring fire with the wood—the king said it was just not to offer gifts to God from what belonged to another, but from his own.
1:1096⧉ ⤴︎
Having learned this from him, his son Solomon exhorts, saying: 'Honor the Lord from your righteous labors, and give Him the firstfruits from the fruits of your righteousness.' Fulfilling this, the king, after purchasing the site, built the altar, offered the sacrifice, and propitiated God.
1:1097⧉ ⤴︎
It should be known that it was on that very site that the wise Solomon built the temple.
1:1098⧉ ⤴︎
For this too the historical narrative teaches:
1:1099⧉ ⤴︎
For, it says, Solomon added to the altar afterward, because it had been small at first. After this, the historian narrated the affairs concerning Ornan, or Adonijah (for he went by two names)—
1:1100⧉ ⤴︎
他如何圖謀篡奪王權;
how he plotted to seize tyrannical power;
1:1101⧉ ⤴︎
and how he held a splendid banquet, having as the chief guests of the feast the general Joab and Abiathar the priest.
1:1102⧉ ⤴︎
He held the banquet by a certain spring, which welled up before the city, beside which a royal garden flourished.
1:1103⧉ ⤴︎
For thus Josephus said, and Symmachus also rendered 'Ain' as 'spring.'
1:1104⧉ ⤴︎
And the Syrian version also calls it 'Aina.'
1:1105⧉ ⤴︎
有些人認為,拿單因未被邀請赴宴而心中不悅;
Some suppose that Nathan was grieved at not having been invited to the banquet;
1:1106⧉ ⤴︎
and that for this reason he arranged for Bathsheba to report to the king what had taken place.
1:1107⧉ ⤴︎
This is an utterly foolish suspicion to have held.
1:1108⧉ ⤴︎
For the prophet, knowing God's decree—
1:1109⧉ ⤴︎

他必為我的名建造殿宇。』)先知既知道這些事,又看見阿珥楠違背神聖的旨意奪取了王位,便藉著拔示巴提醒王那神聖的預言;
he shall build a house for My name.') Knowing these things, the prophet, and seeing that Ornan had seized the kingship contrary to the divine counsel, reminded the king, through Bathsheba, of the divine prediction;

他所說的『基訓』指的是甚麼呢?尼羅河曾被稱為『基訓』;
What does he mean by 'Gihon'? The Nile has been called Gihon;
1:1115⧉ ⤴︎
εἷς γὰρ τῶν πο .
for it is one of the four rivers.
1:1116⧉ ⤴︎
And this God Himself clearly taught through Jeremiah, saying:
1:1117⧉ ⤴︎
『現在你與埃及的道路有何相干,竟要去喝基訓的水呢?』然而,人們也把西羅亞稱為『基訓』;
'And now, what have you to do with the way of Egypt, to drink the water of Gihon?' But they also gave the name Gihon to Siloam;
1:1118⧉ ⤴︎

Zadok the high priest and Nathan the prophet were commanded to anoint Solomon.

「他們在極高之處燒香獻祭,因為直到那時,尚未為耶和華的名建殿。」由此當可理解,經上論及其他諸王所記的事,就是他們除去樹叢、打碎巴力的柱像;
"For they were burning incense and sacrificing on the high places, because the house had not yet been built for the name of the Lord until now." From this one must understand what is recorded concerning the other kings, that they removed the sacred groves, and broke in pieces the pillars of Baal;

But that he then offered not to idols but to God the hecatombs and thousand-fold offerings, the narrative teaches us clearly:

If he built the temple with unhewn stones, what need was there of so many quarrymen? But let no one be surprised that, whereas divine Scripture has said the length was forty cubits and the breadth twenty, I have said the length was sixty.
1:1239⧉ ⤴︎

This too the historian has shown, that he made a ledge in the wall all around the house, so that they might not take hold upon the walls of the house.
1:1254⧉ ⤴︎
Josephus, however, says that the temple itself was also two stories high, and that its total height was one hundred and twenty cubits.
1:1255⧉ ⤴︎
This too the book of Chronicles teaches.
1:1256⧉ ⤴︎
問:「建殿的時候,聽不見錘子、斧子,或任何鐵器的聲響」,這句話當如何理解?答:我先前已經說過,他是用天然生成的石頭建殿;
How is one to understand, "Neither hammer nor axe, nor any tool of iron, was heard while it was being built"? I have already said that he built the temple from naturally-formed stones;
1:1257⧉ ⤴︎
but the hewn stones with which he built the temple's enclosure he ordered to be dressed and fitted to one another in the mountain, so that they would need no further work thereafter.
1:1258⧉ ⤴︎
Here too the writer has intimated that the temple had upper chambers.
1:1259⧉ ⤴︎
經上說:「通往中層的樓梯是盤旋而上的,從中層再通往三層也是如此。」因為牆壁極厚,所以有螺旋形的樓梯;
"For," it says, "the ascent to the middle story was winding, and from the middle to the third stories." For the wall, being very thick, had a spiral stairway;
1:1260⧉ ⤴︎
And with cedar planks he covered it entirely.
1:1261⧉ ⤴︎
And again he covered the boards with gold.
1:1262⧉ ⤴︎
He called the strap-like bands ‘bindings.’
1:1263⧉ ⤴︎
他說這些是用香柏木做成的,每五肘的石造工程中安置一道;
He said these were made of cedar, one for every five cubits of stone;
1:1264⧉ ⤴︎
By these the whole building was bound together.
1:1265⧉ ⤴︎
That the temple was sixty cubits (in length) one may easily learn from this.
1:1266⧉ ⤴︎
For having already said that the length was forty cubits, he afterward added again:
1:1267⧉ ⤴︎
‘in the middle of the house, within, to place there the ark of the covenant of the Lord’
1:1268⧉ ⤴︎
「其長二十肘,寬二十肘,高也二十肘」,他又用金子把它包裹周全。這樣,所謂的聖所便是四十肘;
‘Twenty cubits was its length, and twenty cubits its breadth, and twenty cubits its height,’ and he enclosed it, overlaid with gold. Therefore the place called the Holy Place was forty cubits;
1:1269⧉ ⤴︎
and the Holy of Holies was twenty (cubits).
1:1270⧉ ⤴︎
One may see this more clearly also in what follows.
1:1271⧉ ⤴︎
其實一切都用金子包覆;
Everything, indeed, was covered over with gold;
1:1272⧉ ⤴︎
無論是天花板、地板、基路伯、牆壁,還是門扇;
both the ceiling, and the floor, and the cherubim, and the walls, and the doors;
1:1273⧉ ⤴︎
so that no other material at all was to be seen within.
1:1274⧉ ⤴︎
正如外面一樣,殿的內部也分為兩部分;
Now, just as the outer parts, so too the interior was divided in two;
1:1275⧉ ⤴︎
for of these, some parts were accessible to all the people, while others were accessible to the priests and the Levites.
1:1276⧉ ⤴︎
He also made two pillars of bronze, having both a form and a size worthy to be seen.
1:1277⧉ ⤴︎
For the height, apart from the capitals, was eighteen cubits, and the circumference was fourteen (cubits).
1:1278⧉ ⤴︎
On these he also set capitals of the same material, and very large lilies upon the capitals, and a certain net-like ornament bearing pomegranates hung upon it.
1:1279⧉ ⤴︎
These adorned the porch, bearing an architrave made of the same material.
1:1280⧉ ⤴︎
This the narrative has also made clear, saying:
1:1281⧉ ⤴︎
‘The architrave was a covering upon the thickness of both pillars.’ He also made a bronze laver, which, because of its size, he called ‘the sea.’
1:1282⧉ ⤴︎
For it had the form of a hemisphere, ten cubits in diameter.
1:1283⧉ ⤴︎
圓周則是三十三肘;
And the circumference was thirty-three cubits;
1:1284⧉ ⤴︎
since the thickness measured a span.
1:1285⧉ ⤴︎
For when the two spans—the one on this side, I mean, and the one on that—are measured together with the diameter, eleven cubits are found.
1:1286⧉ ⤴︎
And these, tripled, make thirty-three.
1:1287⧉ ⤴︎

The rim of the laver inclined outward, imitating the petals of a lily.
1:1289⧉ ⤴︎
The book of Chronicles named the mechonoth ‘lavers.’
1:1290⧉ ⤴︎
But Josephus said the mechonoth were ‘bases,’ and called the pot-shaped basins set upon the bases ‘lavers.’
1:1291⧉ ⤴︎

For this the book of Chronicles clearly taught, saying:
1:1293⧉ ⤴︎

‘For to wash in them,’ it says, ‘the parts of the whole burnt offerings, and to rinse them in them.’
1:1294⧉ ⤴︎
‘And the sea, for the priests to wash themselves in it.’ As for the bases of the lavers, which it called ‘mechonoth,’ it said they were made square, having wheels set beneath them, resembling chariot wheels.
1:1295⧉ ⤴︎
These had, above, reliefs of hands, bearing a crown-shaped ring on which the laver was set.
1:1296⧉ ⤴︎
He has called ‘thermastreis’ the warmers, in which we are accustomed to heat water.
1:1297⧉ ⤴︎
Just as Joshua the son of Nun put Jericho under the ban, so he dedicated all the gold and silver to God.
1:1298⧉ ⤴︎
He has, then, called ‘holy things’ the things set apart for the God of all.
1:1299⧉ ⤴︎
What does he mean by ‘the House of the Forest of Lebanon’? He built a very great house among the royal buildings, a forecourt for the court of judgment.
1:1300⧉ ⤴︎
Its length was a hundred cubits, and its breadth fifty.
1:1301⧉ ⤴︎
It had a hundred and thirty-five cedar pillars.

I think, then, that it was called ‘the House of the Forest of Lebanon’ because it had a multitude of cedar pillars, resembling the forest of Lebanon.
1:1303⧉ ⤴︎
他又把門廊稱為『愛蘭』;
Again, he named the porch ‘Ailam’;
1:1304⧉ ⤴︎
其長與殿的寬度相等;
whose length was equal in measure to the breadth of the house;
1:1305⧉ ⤴︎
for the length was fifty cubits, and the breadth thirty.

That this house was joined to the court of judgment, the narrative teaches.
1:1307⧉ ⤴︎
‘And the Ailam of the thrones, where he shall judge there.’
1:1308⧉ ⤴︎
‘the Ailam of the tribunal, and their house, in which he shall sit there,’ and so forth.
1:1309⧉ ⤴︎
That he used hewn stones for these buildings, what follows teaches.
1:1310⧉ ⤴︎
For the writer, having said that when the building had reached its completion he gathered the people together, so as to celebrate the feast of the dedication, added:
