'and the sons of Israel set up for themselves pillars and sacred groves, on every high hill, and under every leafy tree;'
1:2044
'and they burned incense there in the high places, just as did the nations whom the Lord removed from before them.' I think that by 'partners' is meant the agreement made with the nations, and those who came from among them and taught the laws of impiety.
1:2045
For this is what the following hints at:
1:2046
'And they made partners, and began to provoke the Lord to anger, and served the idols, concerning which the Lord had said to them, You shall not do this thing.' And the other translators everywhere render 'grove' as 'Astaroth'.
1:2047
As for 'They made an ephod and teraphim': the ephod was in imitation of the priestly vestment, while the teraphim was suited to divinatory predictions.
1:2048
But lest anyone should put forward, in Israel's defense, that the division of the kingdom, and their living far from Jerusalem, was the cause of their impiety, he necessarily demonstrated the impiety of the tribe of Judah as well.
1:2049
'And indeed Judah itself also did not keep the commandments of the Lord its God, but walked in the statutes which all Israel had made, and they thrust the Lord away from themselves.' And that the book was composed at a time later than the events of Kingdoms, compiled from what had been written by the prophets at each successive period, this passage too teaches.
1:2050
'For Israel,' it says, 'was carried away from its own land to the Assyrians, until this day.' And this the writer of the history has said many times.
1:2051
He also taught us the matters concerning those now called Samaritans: whence they were resettled, and how they were compelled to keep the law of Moses.
1:2052
For being devoured by wild beasts, they entreated that one of the priests of the Israelites be sent to them, so that by teaching them the law of the God of the land, he might free them from the affliction that lay upon them.
1:2053
For they supposed that the maker of all things was but a local deity.
1:2054
When the priest had been sent and was teaching the law: 'They feared the Lord,' it says, 'and yet also served their own gods, according to the practice of the nations from among whom they had been carried away' — a practice that continued to this very day.
1:2055
'Thus they did, according to their custom from the beginning.'
1:2056
For he not only broke in pieces the pillars and cut down the sacred groves, but also removed the high places — a thing which none of those before him had done.
1:2057
他也打碎了那條偉大的摩西所造的銅蛇——摩西造它並非要人敬拜它,而是要藉它預表那救贖性的受難;
He also broke in pieces the bronze serpent which the great Moses had made — not that it should be worshiped, but that it might prefigure the saving Passion;
1:2058
'To this,' it says, 'the people continued burning incense, and they called it Nehushtan.' This I found recorded in the interpretation of Hebrew names, meaning 'This is bronze.' But the other translators render 'Neesthan' as 'Naas'.
1:2059
From this, I think, the Ophites too — and this is a most impious heresy — are called Naassenes.
1:2060
What is meant by, 'At the end of three years'? The siege, it says, held against Samaria for three full years.
1:2061
Why in the world did Hezekiah promise to give gifts to Sennacherib? Ahaz his father, having called Tiglath-pileser into alliance against the Syrians, had promised to pay him tribute.
1:2062
This tribute Ahaz continued to pay.
1:2063
但希西家並未繳納那所加給的貢物;
But Hezekiah did not pay the tribute that was imposed;
1:2064
yet when he saw the army, he promised to give it, and gave three hundred talents of silver, and three hundred talents of gold.
1:2065
For that was the amount of tribute which the Assyrian commanded to be given.
1:2066
Why in the world, though eager to serve the Divine, did he supply the tribute out of the sacred funds? The royal treasuries did not suffice.
1:2067
It was, then, the custom, in such times of necessity, both to spend the sacred treasuries, and again to replenish them from the spoils of enemies.
1:2068
Necessity also caused him to melt down the golden doors which he himself had made, and the door-posts.
1:2069
我想,這些正是被稱為「固定之物」的部分;
For these, I think, were called 'the reinforced parts';
1:2070
這樣一來,若西拿基立藉戰爭得勝,便不致將聖殿與城池一併焚毀;
so that Sennacherib, should he prevail by war, might not burn down both the temple and the city;
1:2071
And here again the writer of this history has made clear that they call 'high places' not only the precincts of the idols, but also the altars built for the God of all in high places.
1:2072
'For if you say to me,' it says, 'We trust in the Lord our God' —
1:2073
「豈不是這希西家自己除掉了他的丘壇和祭壇,並對猶大和耶路撒冷的人說:你們當在耶路撒冷,在這祭壇前敬拜嗎?」而說這些話的,正是拉伯沙基——我想他原是希伯來人,或是叛逃投靠了亞述人,或是早已隨那些被擄的人一同被帶走,並因向亞述人表現出忠誠,而被委以統帥之任;
'is it not this very Hezekiah who removed his high places and his altars, saying to Judah and to Jerusalem, Before this altar you shall worship, in Jerusalem?' And these things the Rabshakeh was saying — being, I think, a Hebrew — who had deserted to them, or had already been swept along with those who were led captive, and, having shown goodwill toward the Assyrians, had been entrusted with the command;
1:2074
因為他是用希伯來語發表這番言論的;
for he was making his speech using the Hebrew tongue;
1:2075
at once, then, the officials asked him to speak in Syriac, so that the people might not know what was said.
1:2076
But he, perceiving that it distressed the officials that the people should understand what was being said, using the Hebrew tongue dared those impious blasphemies, likening the true God to the falsely-named gods.
1:2077
But the most wise king opposed to his blasphemies, not weapons, but prayer and tears and sackcloth, and entreated the prophet Isaiah to become his intercessor.
1:2078
His words too are worthy of admiration.
1:2079
'For this day,' he said, 'is a day of affliction, and reproach, and rebuke, and provocation; for the children have come to the birth-pangs, and there is no strength for her that bears.' We are inflamed, he means, and set ablaze with wrath, having heard those unspeakable blasphemies, and yet we are not able to punish those impious men.
1:2080
And at once the loving God, receiving his supplication, dispelled the king's fear.
1:2081
'For behold,' he said, 'I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear an evil report, and shall return to his own land;'
1:2082
'I will put a spirit in him' — meaning, I think, cowardice.
1:2083
For the divine Apostle likewise said:
1:2084
'For God has not given us a spirit of cowardice.'
1:2085
And God's prediction immediately received its fulfillment.
1:2086
For when a rumor spread abroad that the king of the Ethiopians had taken the field, Sennacherib, in fear, withdrew, having first sent a letter full of every impiety.
1:2087
But the most wise king, unfolding this letter in the temple, offered up that wonderful utterance:
1:2088
'O Lord Almighty, God of Israel, who sits enthroned upon the Cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth;'
1:2089
「你創造了天和地。」他的意思是:他們把你當作那許多並不真實存在的神明中的一個;
'you made heaven and earth.' They, he means, consider you to be one of the many gods who do not really exist;
1:2090
但我知道唯獨你是神,是萬有的創造者;
but I know you alone to be God, maker of all things;
1:2091
'Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear;'
1:2092
'open your eyes, and see;'
1:2093
'and hear the words of Sennacherib king of the Assyrians, which he sent to reproach the living God.' Now, 'Incline and hear' he has expressed in a human manner, entreating that his supplication be received with kindness.
1:2094
'For in truth, O Lord, the kings of the Assyrians have laid waste the nations, and their land, and have cast their gods into the fire;'
1:2095
'for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they destroyed them.' This, he means, is what drove this unholy man to impiety.
1:2096
因為他以為你就如同那些並不存在的神明一般;
For he supposed that you were like the gods that do not exist;
1:2097
But indeed, I think it superfluous to repeat the same things.
1:2098
For I have already set these matters forth in my interpretation of the prophet Isaiah.
1:2099
然而,西拿基立卻逃過了死亡;
But Sennacherib escaped death;
1:2100
so that he might make known to all how great is the power of the God of the Jews.
1:2101
And immediately he received the just stroke at the hands of his own sons.
1:2102
For since he raged madly against his Maker, he suffered destruction at the hands of his own offspring.
1:2103
And he called Armenia "Ararat."
1:2104
For the prophecy of Isaiah gives this same interpretation.
1:2105
And since I have already made clear the matters concerning the illness in the prophecy of the divinely-inspired Isaiah, I think it superfluous to give the same interpretation twice.
1:2106
The marvel concerning the sun, however, ran throughout the whole inhabited world.
1:2107
For the sun's turning back became known to all.
1:2108
正因如此,巴比倫人的王既得知〔西拿基立〕的滅亡,又聽聞了關於太陽所發生的奇事,便差遣使者,帶著禮物,前往猶太人的王那裡;
For this reason, indeed, the king of the Babylonians—having learned of the destruction, and having heard of the marvelous events concerning the sun—sent both ambassadors and gifts to the king of the Jews;
1:2109
and those whom they were accustomed to enslave, these they now honored as their betters.
1:2110
Thus did the God whom they served render them notable.
1:2111
Why then did King Hezekiah incur blame for showing the treasures to the ambassadors of the Babylonians? Because, when he ought to have taught them the power of God, and the providential care he had received, he showed them instead his wealth—which has nothing lasting in it.
1:2112
That it is not nature but the will that prevails in matters of the soul, Manasseh bears witness—he who abandoned his father's pious way of life and walked the opposite path.
1:2113
經上說:「他建築了他父希西家所拆毀剷平的邱壇,又為巴力築了一座壇」;
"For he built," it says, "the high places which Hezekiah his father had thrown down and demolished, and he set up an altar to Baal;"
1:2114
「又製造亞舍拉,效法以色列王亞哈所行的」;
"and he made sacred groves, just as Ahab king of Israel had made;"
1:2115
"and he worshiped all the host of heaven,"
1:2116
"and served them." By "the host of heaven" he means the sun, the moon, and the stars.
1:2117
And—most impious of all—he built an altar in the house of the Lord, of which He had said, "In Jerusalem I will set my name." And not one altar only, but very many.
1:2118
因為他為天上的萬象,在耶和華殿的兩院之中築了壇;
For to all the host of heaven he built altars in the two courts of the house of the Lord;
1:2119
and he practiced divination by omens, and augury, and he appointed mediums, and multiplied wizards.
1:2120
A "kledon" is observation, or divination, carried out by means of words.
1:2121
And I think that "those who know" are so called because they divine by means of the liver.
1:2122
But the most unholy thing of all was to set up in the divine temple the image of the licentious demon—
1:2123
the extremity of impiety.
1:2124
How is one to understand: "I will stretch over Jerusalem the measuring line of Samaria"? "With the same calamities," He says, "I will also encompass these."
1:2125
And just as, of those Samaritans, famine consumed some, war consumed others, and the rest they enslaved and removed to another land—
1:2126
so too upon those dwelling in Jerusalem will I bring so great punishments.
1:2127
And just as I delivered up the house of Ahab to utter destruction,
1:2128
so will I turn the pride of Jerusalem into abasement.
1:2129
For Manasseh not only raged madly into the delusion of idols, but also shed innocent blood exceedingly, until he filled Jerusalem from end to end.
1:2130
And he especially put to death those who clung to piety and who declared to them the divine wrath.
1:2131
They say that this man also sawed the prophet Isaiah in two, using a wooden saw.
1:2132
But this man, as the history in Chronicles has taught us, having repented, obtained forgiveness.
1:2133
But Amon his son imitated his father's wickedness,
1:2134
yet did not emulate his repentance.
1:2135
他首先讓聖殿中一切需要修繕之處,都蒙受了充分的照料;
And first he deemed all the things needing repair in the divine temple worthy of every care;
1:2136
and all had drifted into such neglect of divine things, that they did not even give heed to the divine oracles.
1:2137
This book, then, having been found cast aside in one of the sacred chambers by Hilkiah the high priest, was sent by him to the king.
1:2138
And the king, upon learning what was contained in it, sent both the high priests and the officials to Huldah the prophetess.
1:2139
神便藉著她,因百姓所敢行的種種悖逆之罪,向百姓、聖殿與城發出了判決;
And God, through her, pronounced the sentence against the people, and the temple, and the city, on account of the transgressions they had dared to commit;
1:2140
but to the pious king He proclaimed good things beforehand.
1:2141
"Because," He says, "you heard my words, and your heart was softened, and you humbled yourself before my face, when you heard all that I spoke against this place and against those who dwell in it, that it should become a desolation—and you tore your garments and wept before me—"
1:2142
"indeed, I too have heard," says the Lord,
1:2143
"behold, I will gather you to your fathers, and you shall be gathered to your grave in peace;"
1:2144
「你的眼也不會看見我要降在此地和其上居民的一切災禍。」痛悔與淚水,竟能如此大大地使倚靠它們的人得益;
"and your eyes shall not see all the evils which I am bringing upon this place, and upon those who dwell in it." So greatly do contrition and tears benefit those who resort to them;
1:2145
so much does a pious king benefit his people, as much as the impious harm those they rule.
1:2146
For just as Amon and Manasseh turned the people aside into impiety, planting sacred groves and setting up shrines for the demons,
1:2147
照樣,敬虔的約西亞王,也在香柏溪谷中,將那些為巴力、亞斯她錄,以及其他偶像所製造的器皿,盡都打碎熔化;
so Josiah the pious king broke in pieces and melted down, in the wadi of the cedars, the vessels that had been made for Baal, and for Astarte, and for the other idols;
1:2148
and in Bethel he burned the priests of the idols.
1:2149
And "Mazzaroth," I think, is the name of a star, and I conjecture that the morning star was so called.
1:2150
"And they burned incense to Baal, and to the sun, and to the moon, and to the Mazzaroth, and to all the host of heaven." QUESTION.
1:2151
What does he mean by "the house of the Kadesim," which were in the house of the Lord? By a play on the name, he called the demons "holy ones."
1:2152
For "Kades" is interpreted as "holy."
1:2153
"And in this house," it says, "the women wove robes for the grove." Now "the grove," as I have often said, the other translators call either "Asheroth" or "Astaroth."
1:2154
而這正是阿芙羅狄忒的名號;
And this is a name of Aphrodite;
1:2155
for they call her Astarte.
1:2156
And they set up her wooden image inside the divine temple.
1:2157
但這位可欽佩的王,既砍下了亞舍拉,又搬出那木像,將其付之一炬;
But the admirable king both cut down the grove, and brought out the wooden image, and gave it over to fire;
1:2158
Aquila and his associates interpreted "Kadesim" thus: "where they made garments for those who go a-whoring away from the Lord." And that not only the altars of idols were called "high places," but also the altars built to God in the high places—this the history again teaches.
1:2159
For if they had served idols there, the pious king would not have deemed them worthy of pardon.
1:2160
What does "Topheth" signify? In the interpretation of Hebrew names, I found that the name signifies "ruin."
1:2161
這正是他們使自己兒女經火獻給摩洛的地方;
And this was the place where they made their children pass through fire to Molech;
1:2162
and this was the idol of the Ammonites.
1:2163
And this the history has also made clear.
1:2164
"For he defiled," it says, "Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, so that no man should make his son pass through fire to Molech." And "pharourim," Symmachus and his associates interpreted as belonging to the guard-post.
1:2165
And how the pious king defiled this place, the history teaches:
1:2166
"For he filled," it says, "their places with the bones of men." And again:
1:2167
"He sent and took the bones out of the tombs, and burned them upon the altar," according to the word of the Lord which the man of God had spoken, when Jeroboam stood by the altar at the feast. And that the one who deceived the man of God into partaking of food with him was not a false prophet, it is easy to learn from this.
1:2168
Why, then, did he say the very same thing concerning both Hezekiah and Josiah—
1:2169
就是「在他以前沒有像他的,在他以後也沒有興起像他的」呢?其實,他並非將這一位與那一位彼此比較,而是將兩人各自與其他被稱為敬虔的君王——就是亞撒、約沙法,以及約坦——相比較;
that "there was none like him before him, and after him there arose none like him"? He compared neither the one to the other, nor the other to the one, but compared each to the others reputed for piety—to Asa, to Jehoshaphat, and to Jotham;
1:2170
and having examined both this one and that one alongside them, he declared these to be superior.
1:2171
But he compared them with the other pious kings.
1:2172
But if anyone has supposed that Hezekiah was to be blamed for having exercised a haughty disposition, and for having displayed the treasures to the envoys of the king of Babylon, he will see that Josiah too is not entirely free of blame.
1:2173
因為當法老尼哥為亞述人出征之時,他一心想要援助亞述人;
For when Pharaoh Necho took the field in the cause of the Assyrians, he was eager to bring the Assyrians assistance;
1:2174
and, as the book of Chronicles has taught, Pharaoh said to him:
1:2175
"What have I to do with you, king of Judah? I have not come today to make war against you, but rather against the place of war, and God has told me to make haste."
1:2176
"Take heed to yourself, because of the God who is with me, lest he destroy you."
1:2177
但約西亞並沒有轉臉退避;
But Josiah did not turn his face away;
1:2178
反倒堅意要與他爭戰;
but he strengthened himself to fight against him;
1:2179
約西亞也不聽從法老尼哥出於主口的話;
and Josiah did not listen to the words of Pharaoh Necho from the mouth of the Lord;
1:2180
and he came to fight in the plain of Megiddo.
1:2181
And the archers of Pharaoh shot arrows at King Josiah.
1:2182
And the king said to his servants, "Take me away, for I am sorely wounded." Now Esdras says as follows:
1:2183
「埃及王便差人去見約西亞,說:『猶大王啊,我與你何干?我並非奉主神差遣來攻打你;
"And the king of Egypt sent to Josiah, saying, 'What have I to do with you, king of Judea? I have not been sent against you by the Lord God;
1:2184
for my war is at the Euphrates.
1:2185
如今主與我同在,催促著我;
And now the Lord is with me, urging me on;
1:2186
withdraw, and do not oppose the Lord.'"
1:2187
但約西亞並沒有駕車轉回;
But Josiah did not turn back in his chariot;
1:2188
反而著手與他爭戰,不理會先知耶利米出於主口的話;
but undertook to fight him, not heeding the words of the prophet Jeremiah from the mouth of the Lord;
1:2189
but joined battle with him in the plain, in an unjust cause. He therefore does not compare them with one another, nor set one above the other.
1:2190
因為這樣的想法,實在是極度的愚昧;
For to think in this way would be the height of folly;
1:2191
but he examined them alongside the other kings.
1:2192
But the events concerning Joachim, Joakim, Jeconiah, and Zedekiah, the divine Jeremiah has recorded at greater length.
1:2193
And that book too we have, by divine grace, entirely expounded.
1:2194
至於約雅斤——約雅敬的兒子——神聖的耶利米則稱他為耶哥尼雅;
Now Joachim, the son of Joakim, the divine Jeremiah calls Jeconiah;
1:2195
but the book of Chronicles calls him Joakim.
1:2196
This one, Evil-Merodach released from confinement, and kept him as a companion, sharing his own table.
1:2197
For He who both smites and heals, having delivered him over to the enemy, again counted him worthy of freedom.
1:2198
The title of the book of Chronicles makes clear its subject matter.
1:2199
For whatever the writer of Kingdoms omitted, these things the one who undertook this labor has compiled, gathering them together from many prophetic books.
1:2200
他又把那裡所記載的許多內容,與這些銜接起來,為要保持史實的連貫一致;
And he also joined together with these many things that had been written there, in order to preserve the coherence of the historical narrative;
1:2201
And he began from the very beginning, with the genealogy, in order to show concisely that all the tribes of mankind sprang from one man.
1:2202
And since he makes mention of the kingdom of Judah alone, he teaches which are their cities and villages, and from whom they received their names.
1:2203
"The sons," he says, "of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel — for he was the firstborn."
1:2204
For this hints at the ruler who was to come forth from him.
1:2205
For the text does not signify only the kings who came from him, but also the eternal king, who neither had a beginning of days, nor will have an end.
1:2206
He also states the cause of the victory: "For," he says, "they cried out to God in the battle, and He heard them, because they had trusted in Him." And he also recorded the number of the spoil:
1:2207
"For," he says, "they took fifty thousand camels, two hundred and fifty thousand sheep, two thousand donkeys, and a hundred thousand human lives."
1:2208
因為死傷者眾多,因這場戰爭是出於神;他們便取代敵人在該地定居,直到被擄之時。他也記述了祭司與利未人的家譜;
For there were many slain, because the war was from God; and they settled in their place until the captivity. He also traces the genealogy of the priests and the Levites;
1:2209
And Azariah, who was a descendant of Zadok, was the first to serve as priest in the temple built by Solomon.
1:2210
From these was also Josedek, who was led away captive to Babylon with the others.
1:2211
His son was Joshua the high priest, who together with Zerubbabel led the captivity back, and built the divine temple.
1:2212
由此我們得知:那位起來反叛偉大摩西的可拉,是以斯哈的後裔;
From this we learn that Korah, who raised the rebellion against the great Moses, was a descendant of Izhar;
1:2213
他是哥轄的兒子,是亞倫和摩西之父暗蘭的兄弟;
who was the son of Kohath, and brother of Amram the father of Aaron and Moses;
1:2214
然而,他因僭越之罪,已在曠野受到了懲罰;
But he paid the penalty for his usurpation in the wilderness;
1:2215
但他的兒子們卻沒有與生父一同承受這懲罰;
but his sons did not share in the punishment with their father;
1:2216
例如,偉大的撒母耳就是從他傳下來的後裔;
For instance, the great Samuel traces his lineage from him;
1:2217
歌唱者希幔也是先知撒母耳的後裔;
And Heman the singer was also a descendant of Samuel the prophet;
1:2218
for he was the son of Joel, the son of Samuel.
1:2219
而亞薩,同樣也是歌唱者之一,他的家系出自革順——革順是利未的兒子,哥轄的兄弟;
And Asaph, who was likewise one of the singers, traced his lineage from Gershon, who was a son of Levi, and brother of Kohath;
1:2220
And Ethan, who likewise happened to be one of the singers, had as his ancestor Merari, the third son of Levi.
1:2221
For it says that the Levites were given for all the service of the tabernacle, the house of God.
1:2222
For he also makes mention of the captivity, and teaches its cause.
1:2223
經上說:「全以色列都已按家系記錄下來,看哪,他們都記在以色列和猶大列王的年代誌上;他們因所犯下的不忠而被擄到巴比倫;
"For all Israel," he says, "were enrolled by genealogy, and behold, they are written in the book of the days of the kings of Israel and Judah, and they were carried away to Babylon because of their unfaithfulness, in which they transgressed;
1:2224
and those who formerly dwelt in their possessions and in their cities — Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, and the Nethinim."
1:2225
Now this shows that the composition of this book is later than the captivity.
1:2226
For no one composing the historical narrative speaks of things that come later, but rather of things prior, or of what has happened in his own time.
1:2227
For it is proper to prophets to foretell future things.
1:2228
He also said that, together with them, those who had possessed that land before them were also taken captive.
1:2229
For many Canaanites, Hittites, and Jebusites dwelt among them, and shared in the calamity.
1:2230
And together with Israel, the priests and the Levites also were led away captive.
1:2231
And I think that those called Nethinim are those named "temple slaves."
1:2232
For many dedicated themselves to the services of the priests and Levites.
1:2233
For it was necessary that those from the other tribes also should carry water, and cut wood, and perform whatever other such tasks.
1:2234
For if the all-renowned Joshua commanded the Gibeonites, who were foreigners, to be water-carriers and wood-cutters for the tabernacle, much more was such a service fitting for Israelites.
1:2235
And I also found, in the interpretation of Hebrew names, that this name signifies "gift of Iao," that is, of God who truly Is.
1:2236
他也提到了耶路撒冷的居民;
And he also mentions the inhabitants of Jerusalem;
1:2237
and he says that these were from the sons of Judah, Benjamin, Ephraim, and Manasseh.
1:2238
He also mentions the priests and Levites who had inhabited that city.
1:2239
And he calls the descendants of Korah "Korahites."
1:2240
他又說,這些人當中也有人被立為聖殿的守門人;
From these, he says, gatekeepers were also appointed for the divine temple;
1:2241
He also explained the courses of service.
1:2242
For they were not relieved each day, but according to a reckoning of seven days.
1:2243
"And their brethren in their settlements came at the seventh turn of the appointed times, to enter in with these every seven days, from time to time. And other Levites were entrusted with the vessels of the service."
1:2244
"For some of them," it says, "were set over the vessels of the service;"
1:2245
"because they would bring them in by number, and bring them out by number;"
1:2246
"and some of them were appointed over the vessels — over all the holy vessels, and over the fine flour, the wine, the oil, the frankincense, and the spices." The incense, however, the priests themselves prepared.
1:2247
This has been recorded here afterward.
1:2248
因為我們在《列王紀》中讀到,他們取了他的骸骨,葬在雅比的田野之下;
For in Kingdoms we read that they took his bones and buried them under the terebinth-field in Jabesh;
1:2249
but here, under the oak in Jabesh.
1:2250
And the matters concerning the medium have been set forth more clearly here.
1:2251
"For Saul died," it says, "in his transgressions which he committed against the Lord, according to the word of the Lord, because he did not keep it, and because Saul inquired of the medium to seek guidance;"
1:2252
but that he impiously and unlawfully asked through her that this should be done —
1:2253
God, for His part, pronounced against him the sentence of punishment.
1:2254
"For Samuel the prophet answered him," it says. I think the apparition was so named because Saul longed to learn from Samuel what he ought to do.
1:2255
Whether it was an angel that appeared, exhibiting the form in the likeness of Samuel;
1:2256
or whether it was Samuel's own soul in this apparition —
1:2257
one must know that this did not come about by the sorcery of the medium;
1:2258
but by the wisdom and power of God,
1:2259
who has often foretold many future things even through impious men —
1:2260
藉法老,〔預告了〕豐年與饑荒;
through Pharaoh, the abundance and the famine;
1:2261
and through Nebuchadnezzar, the greatest kingdoms of the inhabited world.
1:2262
But indeed we have spoken sufficiently about these matters in our interpretation of Kingdoms.
1:2263
Let us, then, proceed to what remains.
1:2264
For the all-holy Spirit called Him "the Lord Almighty."
1:2265
And he said the Egyptian, whom Benaiah slew, was five cubits tall.
1:2266
既然如此,怎麼會有人聲稱從未存在過身材高大的人呢?此處他把亞瑪力人的軍隊稱為「基突」〔隊伍〕;
How then have some claimed that there never existed men of great stature? Now he called the band of the Amalekites "Gedour";
1:2267
whereas the book of Kingdoms has called it a "troop."
1:2268
And in listing those who assembled at Hebron, the writer said also this:
1:2269
"From the sons of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, knowing what Israel ought to do at its beginnings — two hundred, and all their brethren with them." He has marveled at these for their wisdom, as being capable and skilled to discern what should be done, and to foresee — not prophetically, but with understanding — things to come, and to propose what was advantageous.
1:2270
約櫃被搬運的時候,烏撒見約櫃將要傾倒,就伸手扶住;
And when the ark was being transported, Uzzah, seeing it tilting, put out his hand to steady it;
1:2271
but he was punished, since he was a Levite and not a priest, because he had dared to touch it.
1:2272
For it belonged only to the priests to carry it upon their shoulders.
1:2273
showing that God does not regard a distinction between an Israelite and a foreigner, but honors piety alone, He overwhelmed the house of the foreigner with blessings of every kind.
1:2274
大衛也明白了烏撒受懲罰的緣由;
And he recognized the cause of Uzzah's punishment;
1:2275
for which reason he transported it not by a cart, but by the priests.
1:2276
"For they carried it," it says, "as Moses commanded by the word of the Lord God of Israel, according to the Scripture, on the poles, upon their shoulders." Then he also tells the arrangements of the singers, and who sang with lyres, who with harps, and who with cymbals.
1:2277
But we have spoken of the differences among the musical instruments in our commentary on Kingdoms.
1:2278
We have often said that Aquila rendered "ephod" as "outer garment."
1:2279
But there were priestly outer garments, and there were also ordinary ones.
1:2280
...alone, which they now call the "Arcadicum."
1:2281
As for the word "cherchal," we have found this used in place of "kollyris" in Kingdoms.
1:2282
For now the one choir, now the other, offered a hymn to the Maker of all things.
1:2283
And he says that David also commanded Zadok the priest to offer sacrifices in Gibeon, since the tabernacle constructed by Moses had been pitched in that city.
1:2284
然而,當神所降的死亡臨到百姓,大衛看見那施行毀滅的天使時,就在阿珥楠的禾場上築了一座壇,為百姓獻上祭物;
But when the death sent by God was brought upon the people, and he saw the angel bringing destruction, he built an altar on the threshing floor of Ornan, and offered the sacrifice on behalf of the people;
1:2285
not as transgressing the divine law, which commanded that sacrifices be offered on the altar before the tabernacle;
1:2286
but because of the punishment upon the people, he hastened to propitiate God.
1:2287
For this too the narrative has taught.
1:2288
"For the tabernacle of the Lord too," it says, "which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the whole burnt offerings, were at that time on the high place that is in Gibeon;"
1:2289
For the victims were consumed not by fire made by human hands, but by fire sent down from heaven.
1:2290
And he appointed some as stonecutters, and ordered others to transport the stones once they were cut.
1:2291
He commanded that the stones be dressed and smoothed at the very quarries, and only then be transported.
1:2292
As for the saying, "You shall not build a house for my name, because you have shed much blood upon the earth before me" — I think this was spoken for the benefit of those who commit bloodshed.
1:2293
For He who called the just slaying of Phinehas a sacrifice would not have blamed the king for a just slaying.
1:2294
And yet Phinehas was a priest, and was praised for it.
1:2295
「非尼哈站起,行了審判,瘟疫這才止住,這就算為他的義,直到萬代,直到永遠。」立法者摩西也曾差遣利未人為助手,殺了三千個拜過金牛犢的人;
"And Phinehas stood up and made atonement, and the plague was stayed, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness, to generation and generation forever." And Moses the lawgiver also slew three thousand who had been initiated into the calf, using the Levites as his agents;
1:2296
偉大的撒母耳也曾親手殺了亞甲;
and the great Samuel also became, with his own hand, the slayer of Agag;
1:2297
and the great Elijah killed eight hundred and fifty prophets and priests of Baal.
1:2298
But He commanded his son to do this — he whose very name prefigured the peace of our Savior.
1:2299
因為「所羅門」正是「和平的」之意;
For indeed "Solomon" is interpreted as "peaceful";
1:2300
and our Lord is called "peace."
1:2301
And the blessed Paul is witness, crying out:
