2:2
...leads to [the reign of] Claudius. Whatever it was needful to set forth, as in the beginnings of an ecclesiastical history — whether concerning the divinity of the Savior, or concerning the antiquity of our religion and the venerable age of the doctrine, and how the institution of the Christians, which seems novel, was of old handed down, and also concerning the coming of the Lord and Savior himself [and the election of the apostles] — we have touched upon, with as much brevity as we could, in the preceding book.
2:3
Come now, let us see also the things that followed after his ascension, teaching them partly by the testimonies of the divine Scriptures, partly also from external sources, from those things which have been faithfully [preserved] in commentaries for the memory of posterity. First, then, into the apostolate in place of Judas the traitor, Matthias is chosen by lot, who was one of the disciples of the Lord, as was demonstrated above.
2:4
Now there are also ordained deacons, seven in number, through the prayers and the laying on of the hands of the apostles, for the sake of the ministry to the widows; among whom [Stephen] is stoned by those who also killed the Lord... [James], the brother of the Lord, because he was the son of Joseph — who was reckoned as the father of Christ, since indeed the virgin Mary had been betrothed to him, who [conceived] by the Holy [Spirit], as the Gospels attest — this same James, I say, who was also surnamed the Just by the ancients on account of the merit of his virtues and the privilege of his distinguished life, the histories have handed down as first to have received the seat of the church which is in Jerusalem, as Clement [says] in the sixth book of the Dispositions: 'For Peter,' he says, 'and James and John, after the assumption of the Savior, although they had been preferred by him to almost all, nevertheless did not claim for themselves the glory of the primacy, but [chose] James, who was called the Just.' The same author too, in the seventh book of the same work, adds concerning this James: 'To James,' he says, 'who was called the Just, and to John and Peter, after the resurrection the Lord handed over all knowledge; and they to the rest of the apostles, and the apostles to those seventy disciples, of whom one was also Barnabas.'
2:5
'Now it is established that there were two Jameses: one this Just, who was cast down from the pinnacle of the temple, struck with a fuller's club, and delivered to death; but the other is that one who was beheaded by Herod.' Of this Just James, then, Paul too makes mention, when he writes: 'But another,' he says, 'of the apostles I saw none, except James the brother of the Lord.'
2:6
At this time therefore Thaddaeus also, whom we mentioned above, according to the command of the Lord being sent to King Abgar, freed him indeed from the sickness of his bodily disease, but joined the whole city of the Edessenes to Christ the Lord with a faith of sufficient belief, so that to this day that city — inasmuch as it deserved to receive the writings of the Lord and Savior himself — is, as it were, dedicated by a certain special devotion to Christ. Meanwhile the first persecution against the church of God [arose, and] scattered the disciples, except the twelve, throughout all Judaea and Samaria — or rather, as the holy Scripture indicates, sowed them abroad.
2:7
Of these some came as far as Phoenicia and even to Cyprus and Antioch, who did not yet dare to entrust the mystery of the faith to the Gentiles, [preaching only to] the Jews. [Saul, entering] houses and dragging off men and women, delivered them to prison. But Philip, who was one of the seven ordained deacons with Stephen, went down to Samaria, filled with the power of the Lord, and preached first the word of God to the Samaritan nation. In which there was so great an efficacy of divine grace that... [Simon] was held in celebrated fame among the peoples of the Samaritans for a time, so that he was thought to be a great power of God.
2:8
But when this man [Simon] had seen the signs and miracles which were done by Philip through the power of divine grace, being astounded and terrified, he yielded and [professed] that he believed in Christ, so much so that even... And since it was an ancient custom among the Romans, that the governors of provinces, if perchance anything new had happened in the provinces which they ruled, should announce it either to the emperor or to the senate, that they might not seem to be ignorant of anything of what was being done, [Pilate] reports to the emperor Tiberius concerning the resurrection from the dead of our Lord and Savior, and also concerning his other wonders, and how, after his death, having risen again, he was already believed to be God by very many. Tiberius referred what he had learned to the senate.
2:9
But the senate is said to have spurned it, on the ground that this matter had not first been laid before it as an indication — [it being] anciently ordained that no one should be reckoned a god among the Romans unless confirmed by the decree and sentence of the senate. But truly the matter was so ordered for a true reason, that the divine power might not be thought to need human supporters. And when, according to what we said above, the senate had refused it, Tiberius should devise the contrary. These things Tertullian — a man most skilled in both the laws and institutions of the Romans, and among our writers exceedingly renowned — [relates] in his Apology, which he writes against the Gentiles on behalf of our faith: 'This was a decree, that no god should be consecrated by the emperor unless approved by the senate. Marcus Aemilius knows this concerning his god Alburnus.'
2:10
'This too makes for our cause, that among you divinity is weighed by human judgment; and unless a god shall have pleased a man, he will not be a god — man will now have to be propitious to god.' Tiberius therefore, in whose time the [Christian] name entered into the world, when it had been announced to him from Syria Palaestina the things which were true there, [referred it to the senate] with the prerogative of his own vote; the senate, because it had not itself approved it, rejected it. Caesar remained in his opinion, threatening danger to the accusers of the Christians. Whence too it came to pass that suddenly, as though a heavenly light were shown, or a certain ray of the sun bursting forth illumined the whole world with the brightness of a light from above, so that there might also be fulfilled that prophecy which had said: 'into all [the earth their sound went out], and unto the ends of the world their words.'
2:11
From which, throughout all cities and villages, immense multitudes, just as at harvest time the grain is gathered to the threshing-floors, so the peoples were gathered together to the churches. Whoever were held by the bonds of a diseased superstition handed down to them by their parents, having received the knowledge of the true God, as though freed from tyrannical masters, came to the one true God and Lord and their Creator, doing penance for their ancient error, with a faithful confession. When therefore now everywhere, even among all the peoples of the Gentiles, the divine favor was being poured out more abundantly, [Cornelius] with all his house is led to the faith of Christ, Peter ministering.
2:12
From that time onward very many others also from the Gentiles at Antioch came to the faith, drawn by the preaching of those whom, on account of the sedition stirred up against Stephen, we taught above to have been scattered abroad throughout every place. There were also very many men of the prophetic order, among whom were both Barnabas and Paul. And when all of them alike were living there in the grace of God and in unanimity, there for the first time the disciples were called Christians, as though a name taken from a perennial fount. At which season a certain Agabus, one of these [prophets, foretold a famine by divine] oracles. But Paul and Barnabas, with the ministry conferred on them by the brethren — which was to serve the uses of the saints — are appointed to Jerusalem. [Herod Agrippa,] his life exacted, made an end of living.
2:13
After him Gaius took up the imperial power, and he conferred the tetrarchies of Lysanias, together with which, a little later, he also bestowed those of Herod upon the same man. But Herod himself, who had been the instigator in the slaying of John and had taken part in the passion of the Lord, he condemned, tormented in many ways, to perpetual exile, as Josephus writes in the passages we have inserted above. Not only in our own, but even in the philosophy of the Greeks he was reckoned first among the first. This man, by descent a Hebrew from his forefathers, was at Alexandria more illustrious and more noble than all the famous and noble men there; and how great and of what quality he was in the divine laws and in the institutions of the fathers is well known.
2:14
For who could worthily set forth how great was his training in the liberal letters, how great in philosophy, and above all how eminent he was in the Platonic and Pythagorean disciplines, so that he surpassed almost all who flourished together with him, and even those who had gone before him. This same man, then, in the times of Gaius, set forth in five books how great were the evils that befell the Jews, and how Gaius was so uplifted with pride that he wished to be called a god. And in these very books, where he relates the calamities of the Jews, he also describes his own embassy, which he undertook to the city of Rome on behalf of his fellow countrymen the Jews, and how, pleading before Gaius on behalf of the laws of the fathers, he gained nothing further than [mockery and peril].
2:15
But Josephus too makes mention of these things in the eighteenth book of his Antiquities, saying that when a sedition had broken out at Alexandria between the Jews and the Greeks, three envoys were sent by each of the two parties to Gaius. One of these accused the Jews in very many other matters, but most of all in this, that they did not render honor to Caesar, as it is the custom for all to do who are subject to the Roman rods of office. "These men," he said, "set up neither altars nor temples to Gaius, nor anything else of this kind by which divine honors are rendered to him by the provincials; but they alone are those who neither decree statues to him nor observe the sacred oath of his name."
2:16
And when Apion had alleged these and other more grievous charges, by which he believed Gaius would be provoked, Philo, who presided over the embassy of the Jews, a man in all respects distinguished, brother of Alexander the alabarch, and not unversed in philosophy, most powerfully refuted the accusations laid against them. But Gaius drove him away and ordered him at once to depart from his sight, while, filled with wrath, he pondered within himself what evil he might inflict upon them. And Philo, going out amid the insult, said to the Jews who stood beside him: "The divine help is at hand, where human aid fails." This much, indeed, is from Josephus. But Philo himself, in the very book which he composed concerning his embassy, relates in detail all the things that were done by himself.
2:17
ex quibus illa sola commemorabo, quae legentibus evi- quendam magni apud imperatorem loci universam eorum gentem summo nisu interimere voluisse, in ludaea autem Pilatum, sub quo in salva- adhue manebat integrum, profanare temptaret, maximis eos perturba- tionibus agitavisse.
Of these things I shall recall only such as will be plain to my readers: that a certain man of high standing before the emperor wished with the utmost effort to destroy their whole nation; and that in Judaea Pilate, under whom while all yet remained whole and unharmed, attempted to profane [the temple], and stirred them up with the greatest of tumults.
2:18
And after the death of Tiberius he relates that Gaius, his successor, showed himself most savage toward very many others, but then especially toward the nation of the Jews; which is evident also from the very words of that writer. "Great," he says, "was the depravity of disposition in Gaius, by which he was carried against all men, but then chiefly against the nation of the Jews; and with a certain peculiar cruelty he began, starting from Alexandria, to plunder those places of theirs which they hold consecrated to their divine supplications, and against [right] to fill them with images. The temple also of the holy city, which alone [remained untouched]."
2:19
"...had remained untouched by all profane contagion, and from the men of old had continued as a sanctuary — this he dared to change into a temple bearing his own name, so that it should be called the shrine of Jupiter, the most noble new god Gaius." The wrongs inflicted upon the Jews at Alexandria under Gaius the aforesaid man sets forth in the second book of his work On the Virtues. Moreover Josephus too, writing in agreement with him concerning the times of Pilate, [tells] of the evils that befell the whole nation as punishment for the outrages done to the Savior. Hear how he himself in the second book of the Jewish [War] says: "This man, who was sent into Judaea by Tiberius as procurator, Pilate, set up [the images]. And when day had dawned, he stirred up great disturbance among the peoples of the Jews, who were astonished and thrown into confusion at this new state of affairs."
2:20
-leges suae et omnia instituta maiorum, quibus nihil tale haberi intra Sed hoc est nimirum, in quo eos impiae professionis suae velox vindieta damnavit pro eo, quod secundum euangelii relationem simul gens conclamavit universa; non habemus regem nisi Caesarem. tum deinde idem scriptor aliam quoque in eos delatam commemorat Post haee autem etiam alia in eos incidit perturbatio, pro eo quod -eontra fas in usus communes publici aquaeductus prorogari viderent, "qui a trecentis stadiis deducebatur, pro quo nimia indignatione po- .pulus movebatur. cumque adesset Pilatus Hierusolymis, audent adire ? eum et clamoribus fatigare.
"...their own laws and all the institutions of their fathers, within which nothing of the sort might be permitted." But this indeed is the very thing in which a swift vengeance condemned them for their impious profession, in return for the fact that, according to the account of the Gospel, the whole nation cried out together: "We have no king but Caesar." Then next the same writer records yet another disturbance brought upon them. "After these things there fell upon them still another commotion, for the reason that, contrary to right, they saw the funds of the public aqueduct being diverted for common uses — the aqueduct which was conducted from a distance of three hundred stadia — and on account of this the people were moved with excessive indignation. And when Pilate was present at Jerusalem, they dared to approach him and to wear him out with their outcries."
2:21
at ille, praeviderat enim seditionem fu- praecepto eis dato, uti ne gladiis in seditiosos, sed fustibus uterentur.
But he — for he had foreseen the sedition — having given them the command that against the seditious they should use not swords, but cudgels.
2:22
"jgitur ubi tempus fuit, signo de tribunalibus dato caedi prosternique coeperunt, nonnulli verberantium vulneribus, plurimi autem, dum in fugam conversi proruunt, propria constipatione perculsi periere, reliqui vero Multas praeterea clades in Hierusolymis eis obvenisse, dum novis semper rebus seditiosius student, idem seriptor exponit ostendens, quod ex admissi sacrilegii tempore numquam ab eis seditionum furor, num- quam bella mortesque cessarunt, usque quo ultimum et exitiabile ma- Sed et Pilatus, qui in salvatorem iniqui iudicis functus officio est, Z isdem temporibus Gai tantis ac talibus malorum cladibus cruciatus est, ut propria se manu transverberasse et nefariam vitam vi abiecisse re- sieut in historiis Graecorum repperimus, eorum dumtaxat, qui Olympia- Claudius imperator succedit, sub quo fames satis dira universum orbem praedixerant, sicut in Actibus apostolorum refertur Agabum quendam prophetam famem magnam futuram sub imperatore Claudio denun- Gasse.
"Therefore, when the moment came, at a signal given from the tribunals, they began to strike them down and lay them low; some perished from the wounds of those who beat them, but very many, while, turned to flight, they rushed headlong, were crushed and killed by their own crowding together; and the rest [escaped scarcely alive]." Besides this, the same writer sets forth that many disasters befell them at Jerusalem, while they ever more seditiously pursued new schemes; showing that, from the time of the sacrilege committed, the fury of their seditions never ceased among them, nor did wars and deaths, until at last the final and destructive [ruin came upon them]. And Pilate too, who in the case of the Savior discharged the office of an unjust judge, was in those same times of Gaius so tortured by such and so great disasters of evils that with his own hand he ran himself through and cast away his wicked life by violence, as we find in the histories of the Greeks — namely of those who chronicled the Olympiads. Claudius the emperor succeeded, under whom a very dire famine [oppressed] the whole world, as they had foretold — as it is related in the Acts of the Apostles that a certain prophet named Agabus declared that a great famine would come to pass under the emperor Claudius.
2:23
But Luke, who relates these things concerning Agabus, adds also this: that through Paul and Barnabas, the brethren who were at Antioch, according to their means [relief was sent to those at Jerusalem], marking the time in which the famine occurred. "He sent forth," he says, "Herod the king his hands to afflict certain of the church, and he killed [James]." The Alexandrian also writes a certain story worthy of remembrance in the seventh book of his Institutions, which had been brought down to him by tradition. "For," he says, "even he who had delivered him up to the judge, [was moved to become a Christian]. Both," he says, "were led together to punishment; and as they were being led, on the way he asked James to grant him forgiveness. And he, deliberating a little, said: 'Peace be to you,' and kissed him."
2:24
And so both [were beheaded]. Herod, because the slaying of James was pleasing to the Jews, went on further and cast Peter also into prison, doubtless wishing to punish him too, had not the divine help been present, whereby an angel, standing by him in the night, wondrously loosed him from the bonds of his chains and bade him go free to the ministry of preaching. And with Peter, indeed, these things came to pass. But the king's crime perpetrated against the apostles did not brook any delay of vengeance; rather, at once the avenging right hand of God was present, as the history written in the Acts of the Apostles teaches us: "When," it says, "at Caesarea, arrayed [in royal robe], he had taken his seat before the tribunal and from on high was making an oration to the people, and when the people acclaimed him:"
2:25
"'This is the voice of a god, and not of a man' — immediately," it says, "the angel of the Lord smote him, and he expired." And it is worthy of wonder that so great a harmony of the divine Scriptures with the historian of that nation should be found. For Josephus himself, making mention of these same events in the nineteenth book of the Antiquities, relates it in these words which are written below: "He had completed," he says, "the third year of his rule over all Judaea, when he chanced to come to Caesarea, which was formerly called Strato's Tower."
2:26
"There, when he was presenting spectacles to the citizens in honor of Caesar, on a votive [day], having put on a garment gleaming with gold and silver marvelously interwoven, and having received it upon the fold of the robe, the splendor being reflected, the flashing of the flashing metal poured out to the spectators a doubled light, so that the terror of the sight dazzled the eyes of those who beheld, and through this, by his arrogance, the craftsman falsely feigned something more of him than belongs to human nature. At once the voices of the flattering crowd rang out, sounding forth honor but bearing destruction; and from this side and that, as the throngs cried aloud, he was addressed as a god, and, that he might be propitious, he was suppliantly entreated, the people saying: 'Until now we have feared you as a man, but from this time onward we confess that you are above human nature.'"
2:27
"But the king did not repress the acclamation raised contrary to right, nor did he shudder at the impiety of the unlawful flattery, until, looking a little later, he saw an angel hanging over and pressing upon his head, and at once he perceived him to be the minister of his own destruction, whom before he had known as the provider of good things. And behold, suddenly a torment seized him from an incredible pain of the belly and a swelling; and looking to his friends: 'Behold,' he said, 'I, that god of yours — behold, I am at once driven off and hurled down out of life, since the divine power has now convicted the false voices bestowed upon me; and I who was but now called immortal by you, headlong am even now being snatched into death. But the sentence which God has decreed must be received.'"
2:28
"'For we have lived not despicably, and we have fulfilled that length of life which is thought blessed.' And when he had said these things, more violently agitated by the force of pain, he was at once carried back to the palace. And when it was noised abroad that he would soon die, a vast multitude of every age and sex, gathering according to the ancestral custom, laid low upon sackcloth, made supplication to almighty God for the king's safety, and the whole royal house resounded with lamentations and groanings. Meanwhile the king himself, reclining in a lofty upper chamber and looking down, and seeing all bowed down and prostrate with weeping, could not himself refrain from tears.'"
2:29
"But, tortured for five continuous days by pains of the belly, he violently broke off his life, in the fiftieth year of his age, having reigned [certain] years under Gaius Caesar, holding the tetrarchy of Philip for three years, and in the fourth adding to himself also that of Herod, while the remaining three years were spent under Claudius Caesar." Whereas in very many other matters Josephus [agrees], but in these things he so entirely varies only in the name of the king, since both the time and the deeds and the circumstances show him to have been the same man, it is possible that — just as we find in very many other names of the Jews — this man too was called by a double name, of which our Luke used the one, and Josephus the other.
2:30
[Gamaliel], when a deliberation was being held in the assembly of the Jews concerning the apostles, said at this very time: "For there rose up a certain Theudas, saying that he was some magician; who was destroyed, and all who followed him were scattered." Come then, let us hear also of him: by what name he persuaded the multitude of the people, with their own goods carried off, to leave the cities and to beset the banks of the river Jordan. He said, moreover, that he himself was even a prophet, and that by the command of his word he could divide the streams of the river [and dry them]; and by saying such things he deceived many.
2:31
"But Fadus did not long indulge his madness, but sent out a squadron of cavalry, which, rushing upon them unexpectedly, slew very many of them indeed, yet took many also alive; and the head of Theudas himself, cut off, they carried to Jerusalem." "About the same time," he says, "a great famine had besieged Judaea also; at which season a queen named Helena, distributing grain purchased with much money from Egypt and brought down to Jerusalem, ministered to the needy." What could be so in tune and so in agreement as these things are with [the account of the Acts], that the people who were at Antioch, according as each was able, sent relief to be conveyed to the saints dwelling in Judaea, through the hands of Barnabas and Paul, and to be dispensed through the presbyters.
2:32
Helenae vero huius, euius historiografus intulit mentionem, nasse autem apud Adiabenorum gentem refertur. omnium cresceret mentes et per dies singulos religionis propagarentur augumenta, nequaquam quiescit hostis salutis humanae, sed urbem in superloribus diximus, evocat. culus nefariis artibus adminieula ipse maiora suppeditans plurimos urbis ilhus cives in erroris eius vincla coniecit. designat haec vir in seriptoribus nobilis, non multo post apostolorum tempus exortus lustinus, de quo suis in locis quae conpetit adsignabimus. hie igitur in Apologetico, quem pro fide nostra ad imperatorem Antoninum scribit, de his hoc modo refert:
Now of this Helena, of whom the historian introduced mention, it is related that she [came to know God] among the nation of the Adiabeni. While the minds of all were growing and the increases of religion were being propagated day by day, the enemy of human salvation by no means rests, but summons up [Simon], of whom we spoke above in the earlier passages. By whose wicked arts, himself supplying still greater supports, he cast very many of the citizens of that city into the bonds of his error. These things are described by a man noble among writers, arisen not long after the time of the apostles, Justin, concerning whom in their proper places we shall assign what is fitting. This man, then, in the Apology which he writes on behalf of our faith to the emperor Antoninus, relates concerning these matters in this manner:
2:33
"And after the ascension of the Lord to heaven," he says, "the demons instigated certain men who said that they were gods, whom we have put to flight. Finally a certain Simon, a Samaritan of the village which is called Gitthon, under Claudius Caesar, being exalted by magical arts and the aid of demons in your city, which holds the empire of all, was decreed a god — very many having been deceived through his phantasms — and was honored among you with the honor of a statue as though a god, set up in the river Tiber between two bridges, bearing [an inscription]; and almost all the Samaritans, and some also from the other nations, both adore and confess him as the supreme god."
2:34
"But also a certain Selene, the companion of his error and deception, who had previously stood in a brothel in the city of Tyre in Phoenicia, [they honor] together with him as though a certain First Mind." This much, indeed, is from Justin. And in agreement with him Irenaeus too writes, in the first book Against Heresies, in which he relates more fully both who Simon himself was and how impure were his works and doctrine — which it would be too long to insert here, since it is open to those who wish to learn these things one by one, and from the various heresies to know more diligently of their venomous dogmas. The head, therefore, of all depravity and the beginning of every heresy we have received as having begun from Simon.
2:35
From him, even down to the present day, his followers, feigning that they embrace the most pure philosophy of the Christians, which they see [to be esteemed], while they seem to forsake the superstition of idols, are again enmeshed in [its] bonds, worshiping and venerating the picture and image of Simon and of her whom we have said to have been the associate of his crime and baseness, Selene. To these they offer kindled incense; to these they pour out impure sacrifices and libations. But [they have] certain unspeakable things among themselves, which, when anyone first hears them, may depart from his mind and, as if struck down by their power, may remain as one thunderstruck, and even come to the point of madness. Since these things are so, they say that it is impossible either that they be committed to writing or uttered by mouth and lips.
2:36
These things, whoever hears, [understands] that they are such as, on account of their impurity and obscenity, are held execrable and utterly to be shuddered at by chaste and modest ears. For whatever is base and impure, that can be devised by anyone, this is handed down as being more impure than all of it — with which the initiates of this most defiled heresy, [defiled] and laden with sins, as the apostle says, detestably mock. This father and author, then, of such evils, Simon, at that same time the devil raised up from the number of his own attendants, and compelled to go to the greatest city, Rome, that there he might resist the most mighty athletes of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the apostles, appointed by Him for this very purpose.
2:37
[The divine providence] forsakes not its own, [but] with all speed quenches the kindled flame of the evil one; for which reason neither Simon nor any other who then joined battle against the apostles of the Lord was able to prevail, because the light of truth and the brightness of the divine word, which for the salvation of men had lately shone forth, through His apostles [scattered] the fog of all falsehood from human minds [and put to flight the darkness] of ignorance. [Simon,] struck [with blindness], forthwith fell into the blindness of a disordered mind — inasmuch as he, having already before in Judaea, through the apostle Peter, been confuted concerning the crimes he was committing, undertook flight across the sea, and pressed on from the east even to the west, nowhere finding safety for his life except in the aid of flight — [and] in [that] time came to such a pitch of evils that even [he sought] a falsely-acquired divinity [that] endures by fraud [in a statue].
2:38
continuo namque in ipsis Claudi apostolorum et maximum fidei magnificentia et virtutis merito primorum principem Petrum ad urbem Romam velut adversum humani generis communem perniciem repugnaturum deducit, ducem quendam et magi- strum militiae suae scientem divina proelia gerere et virtutum castra tiator mercimonia divini luminis, si qui sit conparare paratus, advexit et salutaris praedicationis verbo primus in urbe Roma euangelii sui clarum verbi dei lumen fuisset.
For at once, in those very [days] of Claudius, [the same divine providence] leads to the city of Rome, as against a common plague of the human race about to fight back, Peter, the chief and foremost of the apostles by the magnificence of his faith and the merit of his virtue — a leader and master of His warfare, knowing how to wage divine battles and to [command] the camps of the virtues. [Simon,] a trafficker in the merchandise of the divine light, brought his wares [for sale], if anyone were prepared to purchase; and by the word of the saving proclamation [Peter] was the first in the city of Rome [to make] the clear light of the word of God [shine] with his Gospel.
2:39
[The light having] arisen, the darkness of Simon [gave way]. Now the word of truth and light, which was preached through Peter, illumined the minds of all with its gentle hearing, so that daily [the number of] hearers [increased]. And they entreated Mark his disciple with all prayers, that he would commit to writing, for the sake of their having a perpetual reminder, the things which he preached by word, so that at home and abroad they might continue in meditations of this kind of word; nor did they cease from beseeching before [Mark did what] they had prayed for — [what] is called the Gospel. But Peter, when through the Holy Spirit he learned that he had been despoiled of it by a religious theft, was delighted, considering their faith and devotion through these things; and he confirmed the deed and delivered the writing to the churches to be read in perpetuity.
2:40
Clement [relates] these things in the sixth book of his Institutions; [and] the bishop named Papias [confirms this], who also says this, that Peter in his first epistle, which he writes from the city of Rome, makes mention of Mark, in which he figuratively names Rome as Babylon, when he says: "She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, salutes you, and Mark my son"; and that there [Mark] preached the Gospel which he himself had composed, and that he himself first established the church at Alexandria.
2:41
So great, moreover, is the multitude of believing men and women reported to have been gathered together at the first entrance [of Mark], by the example of his sobriety and continence, that [a description of them] was given by that most eloquent man Philo — whom tradition holds to have come to Rome in the times of the emperor Claudius, and to have seen the apostle Peter, and to have attached himself to the conversations of him who preached the word of God. Which is very probable, since even that writing which we have mentioned embraces things established from the later [ordinances] of the church, which both were then handed down and to the present day are kept by us. But he also describes to the very life the manner of life of the abstinent — namely of those who now live in the churches or in monasteries.
2:42
Whence it is most plainly disclosed that he not only knew the things which are ours, [but that] the apostolic men, chiefly believers of Hebrew descent, so far as can be understood [observed these customs]; since indeed it is agreed that those who under the apostles believed from among the Israelites, still [held fast] to Jewish institutions and to the observance of the law, whether he added [it] from without, but first of all he says that those men are called "cultivators" (worshipers) and the women with them "cultivatresses" (worshipers).
2:43
The reason, moreover, for this name [is drawn] either from the fact that they cultivated the souls of those who came to them, as though rude and rustic; or because, toward the worship of God, [they gathered together] with a pure and whole conscience — [it makes no difference] whether truly in the beginnings those were so called who lived according to the Gospel, before the appellation of Christians was diffused through every place; provided that from the very facts the name be proved [to belong] to those to whom it pertains. He says, therefore, first of all, that they renounce all [their] goods [and], to those whom it concerns, yield [them up].
2:44
Then next, that they also cast far away all the cares of life, and, having gone out of the city, dwell in little gardens or in any small tiny fields, fleeing the fellowship of those of unequal purpose and the companionship of a dissimilar life, knowing these to be a hindrance to those who strive after the arduous [good]. [Those] who first [believed] are recorded to have led [such a] life, just as we plainly read written in the Acts of the Apostles: that all who believed under the apostles, selling their possessions and estates, laid the prices before the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each, according as was needful, so that there was not one [in want]. [As for those] who believed at Alexandria, just as those who had believed before at Jerusalem, it is certain that the same conduct and the same institution designate, without doubt, the same faith of religion also.
2:45
Finally, in the very book of which [we spoke] above — for it behooved every part of Greece and every barbarian land to become a partaker of this perfect good. In Egypt, however, there is a greater abundance of them throughout each several territory, but especially around Alexandria. For all the best men from all places, as though hastening to the glebe of a fertile fatherland, [betake themselves to a place] conveniently situated above a lake whose name is Maria, gently and mildly raised up upon certain little hills, at once for defense and for the temperateness of the air. After these things, having described their dwellings, [he sets forth] how the [manner of life] of each one stands; for [it is a] philosophy.
2:46
imbuuntur patrum leges (in allegoricam intellegentiam dedu- Est autem-, inquit, in singulis locis consecrata orationi domus, lingua significare potest honestorum conventieulum, in quod secedentes-, inquit, -honestae et castae vitae mysteria celebrant, nihil illue prorsus "quod ad cibum potumque pertinet inferentes vel ad reliqua humani eorporis ministeria, sed legis tantum libros et volumina prophetarum, -hymnos quoque in deum ceteraque his similia, in quorum disciplinis atque exereitüs instituti ad perfectam beatamque vitam studiis iugibus Ab ortu autem diei usque ad vesperam omne eis spatium in stu- diorum exercitiis ducitur, quibus ad divinam filosofiam per sacras Jitteras inbuuntur, patrum leges in allegoricam intellegentiam dedu- -centes.
They are steeped in the laws of the fathers (drawn out into an allegorical understanding). "There is, moreover," he says, "in each several place a house consecrated to prayer" — which in [their own] tongue can signify "an assembly of honorable men" — "into which, withdrawing," he says, "they celebrate the mysteries of an honorable and chaste life, bringing in there absolutely nothing that pertains to food or drink or to the other ministries of the human body, but only the books of the law and the volumes of the prophets, hymns also to God and other things similar to these, in the disciplines and exercises of which, being instructed, [they aspire] to the perfect and blessed life by unremitting zeal." From the rising of the day even to the evening, all their span [of time] is spent in the exercises of studies, by which they are imbued with the divine philosophy through the sacred letters, drawing out the laws of the fathers into an allegorical understanding.
2:47
For [they hold] that those things which [are contained] in the law are forms and images of the divine mystery. They have, moreover, also certain disputations and interpretations of the men of old, who were even the authors of that [sect], who are agreed to have handed down to them the norm of allegorical and figural understanding in very many monuments of their writings; of which [the first, as it were, ...]. But it is certain that this man said these things concerning the evangelical and apostolic books, in which is taught how the law and the prophecy ought to be understood spiritually.
2:48
After a little, again also concerning this, that they compose new psalms to God, [fitting] them all to [both] honorable meters and sounds. Many other things too he enumerates in the same book, which are practiced by our people either in the church or in the monasteries. But we must hasten to tell, out of all, those things which properly contain the ecclesiastical form, from which it ought to be manifest to anyone that [these things] pertain to the church. "Continence, moreover, they place first in the soul as a kind of foundation, and so at length they proceed to build the remaining virtues upon this. Food and drink none of them takes before the setting of the sun, that is, joining the time of light with the pursuits of philosophy, but the care of the body with the night."
2:49
"But some even come to the partaking of food only after three days — those, namely, whom a more voracious hunger of studies urges on. Indeed those who dwell amid the erudition of wisdom and in the deeper understanding of the sacred volumes, gaping after them as after copious banquets, cannot be satisfied, and by gazing are more keenly inflamed, so that not even on the fourth [day nor on the sixth do they take food]." That Philo relates these things concerning the institutions of our people, who can doubt? But if to anyone it still seems doubtful, we shall adduce also other sayings of his, which can suit absolutely no one but only our people, [and this] even to the most unbelieving. "With the men, moreover, of whom we speak, there are also women."
2:50
"Among whom many are already aged virgins, keeping the integrity of a chaste body not by any necessity, but by devotion, since they long to consecrate themselves to the pursuits of wisdom not only in soul but also in body, deeming it unworthy to enslave to lust a vessel prepared for the receiving of wisdom, and to bring forth a mortal offspring — those women, by whom the holy and immortal embrace of the divine word is sought, from which a posterity is left behind in no way subject to mortal corruption." But if even this still seems too little, hear what after a while he writes:
2:51
"The treatises, moreover, of the sacred volumes," he says, "are of this kind, that they may rather employ allegorical opinions; since indeed the whole law seems to these men to be like a living creature, which has for its body, as it were, the letter itself and the things which are designated according to the letter, but for its soul the hidden, spiritual, and invisible sense concealed in the letter — which they, taught by their authors, contemplate more sublimely and more nobly, as though beholding it through a mirror; and from the very names [they draw certain] admirable [understandings]." But what need is there to add to these also what he writes concerning their assemblies — how the men gather separately, and separately the women too in the same places; and how they keep vigils, as it is the custom to do among us, and especially on those days when we are wont to observe the solemnity of the Lord's passion?
2:52
All which the aforesaid man has set forth in the same order and the same sequence in which they are carried out among us. And [he tells] how one out of them all, rising up in the midst, chants a psalm in honorable modes, and how to him who leads off the whole multitude responds with a single verse, and [joins] in [the singing]. Into wine, indeed, no one at all, as he himself says, so much as with a taste comes in contact, nor any flesh whatsoever; but water alone is their cup, and bread with salt or hyssop their food.
2:53
He adds further to these how the priests or ministers should discharge their offices, and what above all is the episcopal office; we have shown from what source he ought to draw these things, in which the man aforesaid treated the beginnings of ecclesiastical instruction and the origin of the apostolic and evangelical teaching. This same Philo is indeed most copious in eloquence, most subtle in the meaning of the divine Scriptures, finding much and expressing still more. In short, he has dedicated to us many monuments of his own godlike genius, a figurative exposition of the sacred Law. Then he composed others as well, and he both propounds and resolves the questions and their solutions which he entitled 'On Genesis and Exodus.'
2:54
There are also other books of his which are entitled 'Of Propositions,' being two on husbandry and two on drunkenness. But very many other books of his likewise survive, noted under various titles, such as: On Tongues; On Nature and Discovery; On the Things That Ought to Be Gathered for Instruction; Who It Is That Is Heir of Divine Things; What Is the Division of Equal and Unequal Things. Likewise, On the Three Virtues Which Moses Described Along With the Rest. Likewise, On Those Whose Names Are Changed in the Scriptures; and also On the First and Second Covenants.
2:55
There is also another book of his On Captivity; and On the Life of the Wise Man, of him who was made perfect according to perfect justice and the laws of nature; On the Giants; On That the Divine Is Unchangeable; On the Life of Moses, five books; five books of Questions and Solutions on Exodus; On the Tabernacle and the Ten Words of the Law; On the Things Brought In Under the Form of the Decalogue; On the Animals Appointed for Sacrifices, and What Are the Kinds of Sacrifices; and What Rewards Are Set Before the Good in the Law and What Curses Before the Evil. Then besides these his separate books: On Providence; On the Jews; That Dumb Animals Have Reason; That Everyone Who Sins Is a Slave.
2:56
Likewise another, That Everyone Is Free Who Gives Himself to Good Pursuits; On the Contemplative Life, or Of the Suppliants—this very work, in which we have taught, as written above, that its subjects are apostolic men. There are also his interpretations... Having set out for Rome in the days of the emperor Gaius, when he had written very many things about the impiety and impurity of Gaius, which by irony he entitled 'On the Virtues,' and had recited them to the Senate, he is said to have been held in such admiration that his books were placed in the libraries. ...the preaching of the Lord's word being ministered as far as Illyricum, the emperor Claudius drives the Jews out of the city.
2:57
tunc Aquila et Priscilla eum ceteris Iudaeis expulsi Asiam veniunt ibique cohaerent apostolo tum primum ecclesiae Anibi fundamenta iacienti sicut docet liber de Actibus apostolorum con- paschae tanta ludaeis perturbatio et vastitas Hierusolymis accidit ex seditione commota, ut illi soli, qui in foribus templi constipatione po- puli necati sunt, triginta milia ludaeorum numerarentur. et conversus mala inrogata loseppus per haee verba designat.
Then Aquila and Priscilla, expelled with the rest of the Jews, come to Asia, and there attach themselves to the Apostle who was then first laying the foundations of the church there, as the book of the Acts of the Apostles teaches. ...At the Passover so great a disturbance and devastation befell the Jews at Jerusalem, from a sedition that was stirred up, that of those alone who were killed at the gates of the temple through the crush of the people, thirty thousand Jews were counted. And Josephus in these words describes the evils that were inflicted.
2:58
'He appointed... and sent Felix as procurator of the whole province, of Samaria too and of Galilee and of the region called Beyond the Jordan.' Moreover a most bitter sedition was kindled by the chief priests against the priests and leading men of the people of Jerusalem; each of these, seeking out for himself a band of ruined youths and men delighting in revolution, set himself up as leader of his own faction. As they clashed with one another... there was no one to restrain them, but everything was done as in a city that has no ruler. And so the chief priests came to such insolence that, sending their servants to the threshing floors, they seized the tithes owed to the priests.
2:59
And it came to pass that some of the lesser priests [perished]... And sometimes even in the midst of the city, meeting one another, they slaughtered them; especially on feast days the assassins, mingled with the crowds, roamed about with hidden daggers, and whenever anyone marked out fell in with them at close quarters, they slew him. And by this wicked craft, when the man they had laid low with a secret wound had fallen, those very murderers would feign indignation... and their hidden crimes remained concealed. And first of all Jonathan the high priest is slain by them; after him very many are butchered, so that now the fear of death was heavier than death itself, since each man, as though ever poised for battle, at every single moment expected to be killed.
2:60
...a certain false prophet who, having come to Judaea, a man and a magician, won for himself credit as a prophet by magic art, and forthwith gathering some thirty thousand men and leading them through the desert, arrived with them at [the city]... to hold the city by force, and at the same time to subject to his tyranny the Roman garrisons and the populace, relying in all things upon the followers he had led out with him. But Felix forestalled his attempt, and going at once to meet him with armed men, while the rest of the people conspired with him, in the encounter—some being killed, others taken—he easily quenched what had been rashly begun. These things Josephus reports in the second book of his Histories.
2:61
It is worthwhile, however, to compare what he writes about the Egyptian with what is set down in the Acts of the Apostles, where, under Felix, the tribune who at Jerusalem [addressed Paul] says: 'Are you not that Egyptian who before these days stirred up the people and led out into the desert four thousand men of the assassins?' But let this suffice concerning Felix.
2:62
...he goes to Rome, Aristarchus accompanying him, whom accordingly in his epistles he calls his fellow-prisoner; and also Luke, who describes his acts and those of the other apostles, but chiefly of Paul, concerning whom he noted this at the end: that for two years, established in the city of Rome, he was preaching the word of God [under] Nero. And the account confirms that he set out again to the office of preaching, and after this once more returned to the aforesaid city, where he was consummated in martyrdom. At that time, being placed in chains, he was writing his second epistle to Timothy, in which he speaks both of his first defense and of his approaching end. 'In my first defense,' says Paul himself, 'no one stood by me, but all forsook me. May it not be laid to their charge.'
2:63
'For the Lord stood by me and strengthened me, that through me the preaching might be fulfilled and all the nations might hear, and I was delivered'—that through him the preaching that had been begun might be completed; 'he was delivered from the mouth of the lion,' signifying Nero by the lion, on account of his cruelty. Then in what follows he adds and says: 'The Lord delivered me from the mouth of the lion.' For he foresaw in the Spirit his own consummation, wherefore also '[The Lord will deliver] me from every evil work and will save me into his heavenly kingdom,' signifying by these things that he was straightway to be crowned with martyrdom. Concerning which, however, he speaks yet more plainly in the same epistle, writing:
2:64
'For I,' he says, 'am now being offered up, and the time of my departure is at hand.' Now these things have been said by us to show that Paul was not martyred at that time when Luke concluded Paul's acts in the city of Rome. For it could have been that in the beginning Nero was still milder and received Paul's defense on behalf of our doctrine not disdainfully, but that in the course of time, when together with his other evils his [cruelty was increased even against the apostles]... [Paul] was transmitted from Festus; and seeing frustrated the plots they had aimed at him, they turn the monstrousness of their wickedness against James the brother of the Lord, upon whom the episcopal seat at Jerusalem had been conferred by the apostles, and whom they demand before all the people.
2:65
But he, against the expectation of all, with a voice quite free and far bolder than they wished, before the whole people and with all confidence professes that the Son of God is our Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. Then they, unable to bear so weighty and so free a testimony of the man—chiefly because he was reckoned the most righteous of all men for the merits of his religious and most self-controlled life—turn to his death, the occasion of the moment favoring them by reason of the governor's death. For it happened that Festus died in Judaea about that same time, and the province was without governor and prince.
2:66
For the manner of James's death has already been indicated by us above, in the discourses of Clement, where he describes him as cast down from the pinnacle of the temple and struck with a fuller's club. More precisely, however, Hegesippus—who came immediately after those very first successions of the apostles—reports concerning him in the fifth book of his Commentaries in these words: 'James the brother of the Lord,' he says, 'received the church together with the apostles, he who was surnamed the Just by all, enduring from the times of the Lord himself even down to us. And many indeed were called James, but this one was holy from his mother's womb. He drank neither wine nor strong drink, nor did he eat any living thing; no iron came upon his head; he was not anointed with oil, nor did he use the baths.'
2:67

'To him alone was it permitted to enter into the holy of holies. For neither did he wear a woolen garment, but only fine linen. He alone entered the temple and would lie upon his knees, praying for the people, so that his knees grew hard as a camel's from always bending the knee and never ceasing from prayer. And so, for his incredible self-control and supreme righteousness, he was called Just and Oblias, which is interpreted 'bulwark of the people and righteousness,' just as the prophets also declared concerning him. Now certain men of the seven heresies which were among the people, of which we wrote above, asked him what was the door of Jesus. But he said that this one was the Savior. And of these some believed that Jesus is the Christ.'
2:68
'But those heresies which we mentioned above believed neither that he had risen nor that he would come to render to each according to his works. But those who believed, believed through James. And since among them many even of the rulers had believed, there was a commotion of the Jews and the scribes and the Pharisees, who said: "Nothing now remains but that the whole people should believe in Jesus, that he is the Christ." Coming together therefore to James, they said to him: "We beseech you to recall the people, for behold, it is going astray after Jesus, thinking that he is the Christ. We beg you therefore to persuade all... concerning you both we and the people bear witness that you are righteous and that you show partiality to no one."'
2:69
'You therefore persuade the people concerning Jesus, that it may not go astray, for we all obey you. Ascend therefore to the high place of the pinnacle of the temple, that, set on high, you may appear to all and your words may be heard by all; for in the days of the Passover there gathers a multitude not only of the Jews but also of the Gentiles.' So the aforesaid scribes and Pharisees set James upon the pinnacle of the temple, and crying out to him with a loud voice they say: 'Most righteous of men, whom we all ought to obey, since the people goes astray after Jesus who was crucified, declare to us what is the door of Jesus.' Then James answered them with a mighty voice: 'Why do you question me about the Son of Man?
2:70
And behold, he himself sits in heaven at the right hand of the supreme Power, and he himself will come upon the clouds of heaven.' And when by this answer and testimony of James many were satisfied and had gladly heard what James avowed, they began to glorify God and to say: 'Hosanna to the Son of David.' Then again the same scribes and Pharisees began to say to one another: 'We did wrong to furnish such testimony to Jesus; but let us go up and cast this man down, that the rest may be terrified and not believe in him.' And at once they cried out with a loud voice, saying: 'Oh, oh! Even the Just one has gone astray!' And they fulfilled the scripture which is written in Isaiah, saying:
2:71
'Let us take away the Just one, since he is useless to us; therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own works.' So they went up and cast him down, and began to press upon him with stones, because, though thrown down, he not only could not die, but turning and falling upon his knees he kept saying: 'I pray you, Lord God, Father, [forgive them, for they know not what they do].' And while they were pressing with stones upon him as he prayed from below, one of the priests, of the sons of Rechab, son of Rechabim—concerning whom the prophet Jeremiah bears witness—cried out saying: 'Spare, I beg you! What are you doing? The just man prays for you, whom you are stoning!' And one of them, a fuller, snatching up the club with which they are wont to press cloth, dashed it against his skull; and by such a martyrdom he was consummated and buried in that same place near the temple.
2:72
This is he who stood forth as a witness of the truth to Jews and Gentiles, that Jesus is the Christ. And not long after, [Josephus] related that James was held so wondrous and so highly esteemed among all men for his observance of all righteousness, that even the wiser among the Jews believed this to be the cause of the siege of Jerusalem that immediately followed—namely, that they had laid wicked hands upon him. And Josephus plainly shows that it seemed so to him, in these words: 'All these things,' he says, 'befell the Jews in vengeance for James the Just, who was the brother of Jesus who is called Christ, a man most righteous and most pious by the confession of all, whom the Jews put to death.'

The same author also [records] his death in the twentieth book of the Antiquities in these words: 'Now Caesar, on learning of the death of Festus, sends Albinus as prefect of Judaea. But Ananias the younger, who, as we said above, had received the high priesthood—a man exceedingly bold and insolent in character—was upholding the heresy of the Sadducees, who in their judgments appear crueler than the rest of the Jews, as we have already shown above. This man, thinking that from the death of Festus a fit occasion for his insolence was given, convenes a session of judges and brings into the midst the brother of Jesus who is called Christ, James by name, and very many others, whom, accusing them of acting against the Law, he handed over to be stoned.'

Thus far also concerning James, whose is that epistle which is written first among those called Catholic. It must be known, however, that by some it is not received, nor does any of the ancients easily recall seven of them. We, nevertheless, know that these too, along with the rest, are [received] by almost all... Annianus received the priesthood of the church at Alexandria.

...he had conceived wicked and impure abominations, and was now aiming even at outrage against the Divinity itself. It is a long task, and unsuited to our work, to describe his shameful deeds and crimes, especially since many have written of them more fully. From their books, if anyone wishes to know his disgraceful life, given over to all manner of wickedness, he can do so more easily. In them he will find that he advanced to such a pitch of crime that he did not spare even his own kin and household, but stood forth as both parricide and incestuous against his mother, his brothers, his wives, and all his nearest of blood.

Against all these, therefore, he turned the arms of his impiety, as Tertullian, a most noble man among writers, [attests]: 'Consult your own records; there you will find that Nero was the first who raged against this sect, especially when it was springing up at Rome... For whoever knows him can understand that nothing was condemned by Nero except some great good. Domitian too attempted it, a portion of Nero in cruelty; but, being somewhat human, he quickly checked what he had begun, even restoring those whom he had banished. Such have ever been our persecutors: unjust, impious, base.' ...he seeks the death of the very apostles first, inasmuch as they were the leaders and standard-bearers among the people of God.

And Paul indeed [was beheaded] in the very city of Rome... I think it superfluous [to prove this] from without, since the deed done is testified even to the present day by their most splendid monuments. Nevertheless, a certain Gaius, an ancient writer, also writes of these matters; he, disputing under Zephyrinus bishop of Rome against a certain Proculus, a Cataphrygian, says these things concerning the apostles: 'I,' he says, 'can point to the trophies of the apostles. For if you go by the royal road that leads to the Vatican, or by the Ostian Way, you will find [the trophies of those who founded this church].' And that both suffered at the same time, Dionysius, bishop of the Corinthians, when he was in the city and disputed in writings, [attests], saying that you [Romans] have joined together [the founding] of the Roman and the Corinthian church.

'For both, coming at the same time, taught in our church of the Corinthians, and, teaching together throughout all Italy and in this city, were likewise crowned with martyrdom together.' Now Josephus, writing of how great calamities overran the nation of the Jews and how their devastation was spread abroad, adds these things also: '...that he scourged every honorable man and, in the most sacred city of Jerusalem itself, fastened them to the gibbet, at that time when it befell that the state of the Jews was thrown into confusion by the workings of revolution, in the twelfth [year]...' He also relates that throughout all Syria the most atrocious savagery was exercised against the seditious Jews, so that even those who dwelt mingled with the Gentiles in the several cities were reckoned in the number of the enemy.

And you might see the cities filled with unburied bodies, the dead lying together in public, corpses cast out, and the whole province crammed with countless evils. Yet even so, far more grievously than this dire and dreadful spectacle did the fear and dread of evils to come, growing worse day by day, terrify them. These things Josephus reports word for word. But in this place concerning [the following, we treat]: In what places the apostles preached Christ. On the overthrow of the Jews after Christ. On the things foretold by Christ. How, after James, Symeon governed the church of Jerusalem. How Vespasian ordered the posterity of David to be sought out. That at Rome the second bishop was Anencletus.
