1:1
ALTERCATIO LEGIS INTER SIMONEM IUDAEUM ET THEOPHILUM CHRISTIANUM. Domino fratri Valerio Euagrius salutem. I tunc demum poteris intellegere.
A DISPUTATION CONCERNING THE LAW BETWEEN SIMON THE JEW AND THEOPHILUS THE CHRISTIAN. To my lord and brother Valerius, Evagrius sends greeting. I will relate to you a most welcome disputation that took place recently before our eyes, which you too, when you come to know it, will gladly receive. There was, then, a disputation concerning the Law between a certain Simon the Jew and Theophilus the Christian. Theophilus the Christian said: It is the most sacred voice of Christ. If you wish to know it, you must first believe; then at last you will be able to understand. For Isaiah refutes you, saying: unless you believe, you shall not understand. Without doubt, therefore, we acknowledge, know, and worship God almighty, invisible, immeasurable, incomprehensible; and thereafter we confess Christ as God and the Son of God.
1:2
And as for His saying, 'I am the first and I am the last,' it signifies the two comings of Christ. Simon the Jew said: What of this, that He says, 'Besides Me there is no God'? Theophilus the Christian said: Christ, who is God, the Son of God, spoke of Himself, because He foresaw that Antichrist would come and would call himself God. Of him the prophet Zechariah says: Behold, I raise up a shepherd in the land, and what fails he will not heed, and what is scattered he will not seek, and what is bruised he will not heal, and what is whole he will not sustain; and he will eat the flesh of the chosen and tear off their hoofs; and their sword is upon his arm and upon his right eye. His arm shall utterly wither, and his right eye shall be utterly blinded. Therefore Christ says:
1:3
I am the first and the last, and besides Me there is no God. Simon the Jew said: Then do you make two Gods? Theophilus the Christian said: God is one, from whom is Christ and in whom is God; just as three appeared to Abraham at the oak of Mamre, and meeting them he saluted them as one, saying: Lord, if I have found favor before You, I will fetch water, and let Your feet be washed, and refresh yourselves under the tree—though three indeed appeared—by the foreknowledge of the divinity, namely that the tree of Christ's cross would furnish a covering of refreshment to believers. So likewise the prophet says in the eighty-first psalm: God stood in the assembly of gods, and in the midst He judges among gods. Surely he speaks of Christ, who taught in your synagogues and worked great miracles.
1:4
Likewise in the forty-fourth psalm he says: Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; the scepter of equity is the scepter of Your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your fellows. Which God, or which God did he name, O Jew? Surely it is God the Father concerning Christ His Son, on whose behalf and concerning whom Jeremiah, the most esteemed of the prophets, says: This is our God, and there is no other, nor shall any be reckoned beside Him; He who has found out every way of prudence and gave it to Jacob His servant and to Israel His beloved. After this He was seen upon the earth and dwelt among men. Again in the forty-fifth psalm he says: Be still and see, for I am God; I shall be exalted among the nations, and I shall be exalted in the earth.
1:5
And in the sixty-seventh psalm: Sing to the Lord, sing praises to His name, make a way for Him who ascends toward the west; the Lord is His name. It would be tedious for me to pursue further examples; by these few the truth is proven. Simon the Jew said: Rightly indeed do they heap up testimonies who enjoy a united spirit, agreeing with your work. But I would have you expound this to me: where in any passage God by Himself established Christ as God. Then at last I shall consider believing Christ to be God and the Son of God. Theophilus the Christian said: Unbelieving Jew, do you now dispute even about the prophets? Yet receive an answer to your question. God speaks to Moses, saying: Behold, I have made you a god to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet.
1:6
Consider that this Moses was a type of Christ, a god to the unbelieving nations; how much more is Christ the God of believers! Just as Moses delivered the people from Egypt, from the most cruel servitude of Pharaoh, so also Christ delivered His people from the servitude of idols and from the power of the devil. Simon the Jew said: If, then, Christ is God and the Son of God, how is it written in Genesis: In the beginning God made heaven and earth? Surely He could have said: In the beginning God the Father and God the Son made heaven and earth. Theophilus the Christian said: You err, Jew, and you will never find the truth unless you understand the origin of truth.
1:7
For if you are willing to believe, you can also find His beginning, who is Christ, the Son of God. For thus: In the beginning, it says, God made heaven and earth—that is, in Christ's decree and according to His will and to whose image and likeness He deigned to make man. For He says: Let us make man (in our image and likeness)! And again, below, it says: God made man in the image of God; male and female He made them. Simon the Jew said: He could have said this also to the angels. Theophilus the Christian said: You err, Jew. For to which of the angels did God say: You are My Son, this day have I begotten You? And again in the psalm He says: I will set Him as prince, exalted above all the kings of the earth.
1:8
But He commands the angels to worship Christ. And again in the canticle of Deuteronomy He says: Rejoice, O nations, with Him, and let all the angels of God worship Him. Simon the Jew said: Prove to me that Christ is prince. Theophilus the Christian said: I have already said it. Now receive another proof, if even thus you can believe. For when Joshua the son of Nun stood across the Jordan, he saw a man standing, and a sword sharp on both sides in his hand. Joshua says to him: Are you ours or our adversaries'? But he answered: I am the prince of the host of the Lord's majesty. Simon the Jew said: This too I would have you expound to me: how Christ is the Son of God. For all the saints also are called sons of God.
1:9
Therefore, just as you have proved to me that He is that prince, prove to me now that He is the Son of God, born of God. For divinity is far removed from human unions and does not mingle in embrace. Theophilus the Christian said: You speak like a Jew. For Christ, who is God, the Son of God, the firstborn, was brought forth by the Word, uttered from the mouth, cast forth from an undefiled womb. For just as God in the beginning, when He made man from the clay of the earth, breathed His own breath into him—and man became a living soul—so also He begot His Word, that is, Christ, from the womb of His heart, as He says in the second book of Kingdoms: And the word of the Lord came to Nathan the prophet, saying: Go and say to My servant David:
1:10
You shall not build Me a house to dwell in; but when your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will raise up your seed after you. He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish his throne forever; and I will be to him a father, and he shall be to Me a son, and his house shall obtain faithfulness. Likewise in the second psalm he says: Why did the nations rage, and the peoples imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the peoples gathered together against the Lord and against His Christ: Let us break their bonds and cast their yoke from us. He who dwells in the heavens shall laugh at them, and the Lord shall mock them. Then shall He speak to them in His anger, and in His fury shall He trouble them.
1:11
ego autem constitutus sum rex ab eo super Sion montem sanctum eius, praedicans praeceptum domini. dominus dixit ad me: filius meus es tu, ego hodie genui te. pete a me, et dabo tibi gentes hereditatem tuam et possessionem tuam terminos terrae. reges eos in uirga ferrea et tamquam uas figuli confringes eos. item in psalmo XLIIII: eructauit cor meum uerbum bonum, dico ego opera mea regi. et Esaias dicit: consummatas quidem et breuiatas res audiui, quoniam uerbum breuiatum faciet deus in omni terra. hoc est uerbum, quod uerbera nostra sanauit, de quo in psalmo CVI dicit: misit uerbum suum et sanauit eos.
But I have been appointed king by Him over Zion His holy mountain, proclaiming the decree of the Lord. The Lord said to Me: You are My Son, this day have I begotten You. Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations as Your inheritance and the ends of the earth as Your possession. You shall rule them with a rod of iron, and like a potter's vessel You shall shatter them. Likewise in the forty-fourth psalm: My heart has uttered a good word; I tell my works to the King. And Isaiah says: I have heard things finished and cut short, for God will make a shortened word in all the earth. This is the Word that healed our stripes, of which it says in the one hundred and sixth psalm: He sent His Word and healed them.
1:12
Likewise in another psalm God bears witness through the prophet, saying that the heaven, of which we spoke above, He made of Christ and in Christ, who is the Word of God: By the word of the Lord the heavens were made firm, and all their host by the breath of His mouth. This is the Word that swiftly ran through the world and turned the souls of the erring to the Lord by the new law, of which it says in the one hundred and forty-seventh psalm: He sends His word to the earth; His word runs swiftly. And Isaiah says: Behold, the word of the Lord has become to them a curse, and they would not have it. For if you are willing to hear our John crying out with prophetic mouth: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This was in the beginning with God.
1:13
omnia per illum facta sunt, et sine illo factum est nihil. et rursus . filius pari genere testimonium reddit patri et natiuitatis suae exordia testatur dicens apud Salomonem: ego ex ore altissimi prodiui primogenitus ante omnem creaturam. ego in caelis feci, ut oriretur lumen indeficiens. ego in altis habitaui, et thronus meus in columna nubis. uides ergo, Simon, exeuntibus patribus tuis de Aegypto quia Christus erat, qui in columna nubis praecedebat eos. item illic in Prouerbiis eiusdem: dominus condidit me initio uiarum suarum, in principio, in opera sua, antequam terram faceret et antequam abyssos constitueret, et ante omnes colles genuit me.
All things were made through Him, and without Him was made nothing. And again, the Son in like manner renders testimony to the Father and bears witness to the beginnings of His own nativity, saying in Solomon: I came forth from the mouth of the Most High, the firstborn before every creature. I in the heavens made the unfailing light to rise. I dwelt in the high places, and My throne is in a pillar of cloud. You see, therefore, Simon, that when your fathers went out of Egypt, it was Christ who went before them in the pillar of cloud. Likewise there in the Proverbs of the same Solomon: The Lord created me as the beginning of His ways, in the beginning, for His works, before He made the earth and before He set the depths in place, and before all the hills He begot me.
1:14
When He prepared the heavens, I was present with Him; and when He set apart His seat, when He laid strong the foundations of the earth, I was together with Him, ordering all things. I was the one in whom He delighted, and daily I rejoiced before His face, when He rejoiced in the world made perfect. Simon the Jew said: He may have said this concerning Wisdom. Theophilus the Christian said: You err, Jew, and your understanding is covered with a veil of ignorance. Not without reason did the most holy Moses veil his face with the covering of a veil, which veil has covered over your hearts. Therefore draw near to the Lord and believe Christ to be God and the Son of God, and the covering of ignorance will be taken away from your understanding. You suppose it was said of Wisdom; you do not know that Christ is Himself the power of God and the wisdom of God.
1:15
Indeed your kings, who reigned by succession, could not receive wisdom and power unless they were named by the title of the name of Christ. Of this matter I will give Daniel as my authority, saying: The vision and the prophet shall be sealed, everlasting righteousness shall arise, and the Holy of Holies shall be anointed. And you shall know and understand, from the going forth of the word in answering and in building Jerusalem until Christ the reigning one. When Christ came from God, the Christ of christs and the Lord of lords and the King of your kings, the anointing of Samaria ceased, and that horn from which your kings were anointed; and all the prophets were silent, because He of whom they spoke had come, as Isaiah says: I am He who was speaking, and I have come to bring good news.
1:16
Therefore, as we said, He Himself is the Christ of christs and the Lord of lords. I will give Isaiah as my authority, saying: The Lord says to my Christ, my Lord, whose right hand I have held, that the nations may obey Him: I will break the might of kings, I will open before Him the brazen gates, and cities shall not be shut, and I will open the brazen gates and shatter the iron bars and give You hidden treasures. Whose right hand, then, did the Father hold but that of Christ His Son, whom indeed all the nations have obeyed, as it says in the psalm: You are always with me; You have held my right hand? Or what city was shut against Him?
1:17
And before whom do all the brazen gates lie open—that is, the inmost hearts of individuals unlocked by faith in Christ—who by His teaching has unlocked the hearts and inmost depths of each? Or will you perhaps even dare to dispute about His nativity, when the same prophet says: The word of the Lord came to Ahaz, saying: Ask for yourself a sign from the Lord your God, in the depth or in the height. And Ahaz says: I will not ask, nor will I tempt the Lord. And He said: Hear now, O house of David: it is no small strife for you with men, and therefore will you wage strife with God? For the Lord Himself shall give you a sign: Behold, a virgin shall conceive in her womb and shall bear a son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel, which is interpreted, God with us. Simon the Jew said:
1:18
Ego prophetis credo, praeterea Esaiam receptissimum accipio. sed de alia uirgine eum dixisse arbi- ) tror. cum enim Salmanassar rex Assyriorum ducem suum misisset ad Hierusalem exprobrare deum uiuum, tunc Esaias prophetauit aduersus Salmanassar regem dicens: spreuit te et subsannauit te uirgo filia Sion, caput suum mouit aduersus te filia Hierusalem. quando angelus de castris Assyriorum centum octoginta milia percussit, in hoc fuit . nobiscum deus. Theophilus Christianus dixit: Erras, Iudaee, necdum remoues incredulitatem. si ergo filiam Sion uirginem dicis, quem = filium peperit? uel quis butyrum et mel manducauit?
I believe the prophets, and moreover I accept Isaiah as most esteemed. But I think he said this of another virgin. For when Shalmaneser, king of the Assyrians, had sent his general to Jerusalem to revile the living God, then Isaiah prophesied against King Shalmaneser, saying: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and mocked you; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head against you. When the angel struck a hundred and eighty thousand from the camp of the Assyrians, in this was 'God with us.' Theophilus the Christian said: You err, Jew, you have not yet put away unbelief. If, then, you say the daughter of Zion is the virgin, what son did she bear? Or who ate butter and honey?
1:19
Or who was the infant who, before he knew his father or mother, carried off the spoils of Samaria? Or what son did she have of the seed of David? For Isaiah says: Behold, a virgin shall conceive in her womb and shall bear a son, and His name shall be called Emmanuel. He shall eat butter and honey; and before the child knows to call father or mother, he shall receive the power of Damascus and the spoils of Samaria against the king of the Assyrians. Simon the Jew said: Expound to me, then, how these things stand, that I may be able to believe what is understood by honey or butter, or what spoils of Samaria Christ received. Theophilus the Christian said: If you put away unbelief, you shall hear the truth, lest perhaps there be fulfilled in you what is written in the psalm:
1:20
like the deaf asp that stops its ears, which will not hear the voices of charmers. Boldly too does Isaiah cry out against your unbelief, saying: The words of this book shall be to you like the words of a sealed book, which if you give to a man who knows letters to read, he says: I cannot read, for it is sealed. Or if that book be given to a man who does not know letters, and you say, Read, he says: I have not learned. First indeed Christ, according to the nativity of all infants, ate butter and honey; this we believe and so guard our faith, and that on the eighth day He was circumcised. But the butter is understood as the anointing of the Spirit; the honey is the sweetness of His teaching, which we attain, and so obtain faith.
1:21
But the spoils of Samaria He carried off in this way: that, while He was an infant, He received gifts from the magi—gold, frankincense, and myrrh; and afterward, when grown up, while He taught and showed forth all the truth of God, Samaria and Damascus, abandoning their idols, believed well, leaving behind the Assyrian, that is, the devil. Simon the Jew said: Well indeed do you lay open the mysteries through all my questions. But since you have proved Christ to be God, the Son of God, brought forth by the mouth of God, begotten by the Word, and born of a virgin, how then do you assert that He was born of the seed of David in the city of Bethlehem? Theophilus the Christian said: I will give Isaiah as my authority, saying: A rod shall come forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower shall arise from his root, and the Spirit of God shall rest upon Him.
1:22
For the rod was Mary the virgin, who came forth from the seed of David, from whom Christ, the flower of the patriarchs, is born according to the flesh. For God, who in the book of Numbers made the sign that a she-ass should speak, willed to make a far greater sign, that Christ should be born of a virgin. Or what strife would there be between me and you, unless the virgin bore a child? Simon the Jew said: I believe that the virgin, as you say, conceived of the Spirit. Be it so, if the virgin could give birth. Theophilus the Christian said: O unbeliever, God was able to split a rock and bring forth water to the full; how much more was God able to command that a virgin should bring forth offspring! And I bring you yet another testimony, if only you will believe—Baruch the son of Neriah, who prophesied in Babylon. Simon the Jew said:
1:23
Do you then think me so faithless that I would not receive Baruch the disciple of Jeremiah, who, sent so often by Jeremiah, addressed the people, and whom Jeremiah commanded to write down his prophecy? And because Jeremiah knew that he would prophesy, he thus presided over the people in captivity after Jeremiah and prophesied—but he made no mention of Christ. Theophilus the Christian said: How then, near the end of his book, did he prophesy concerning His nativity and concerning the manner of His clothing and concerning His passion and concerning His resurrection, saying: This is my anointed, my chosen, who is said to be cast forth from an undefiled womb, born and to suffer?
1:24
For he speaks of His tunic woven from above and all these things, Simon; if you so believe, when you come into the fullness of our gospels, you shall find them fulfilled. But that He was born in Bethlehem, hear Micah the prophet of God saying: And you, Bethlehem of Judah, house of Ephratha, shall not be the least, that you should be established among the thousands of Judah. For out of you shall come forth for me one who shall be prince in Israel, and his possession is from the beginning and from the days of eternity. Simon the Jew said: Many things indeed we read, but we do not so understand them. Therefore I wish, through each thing that I ask you, to learn the proven testimonies of the truth.
1:25
Moreover, since God commanded circumcision to be observed, which He first delivered to the patriarch Abraham, which circumcision you professed above that Christ had, how then do you persuade me to believe, you who forbid circumcision? Theophilus the Christian said: We forbid the circumcising of the flesh, but the circumcised we gladly hold to be believers. For Abraham, we believe, before he was circumcised, was made the friend of God through faith and obtained righteousness through faith, not through circumcision. For thus it says: For I have made you the father of many nations before the Lord, in whom you believed. Therefore it says: Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness.
1:26
For this he heard before he was circumcised, and afterward he received circumcision, showing that two peoples would come to faith in Christ—one from the circumcision and one from the uncircumcision. For if Christ had not been circumcised, how would you today believe me, or the prophets, that He should come from the seed of David? For circumcision is a sign of lineage, not of salvation. Simon the Jew said: How then, when the son of Moses was in uncircumcision, did the angel seek to strangle him, until Zipporah his mother, taking a flint, circumcised the boy, and, when blood was at hand, prayed, saying: Let the blood of the boy's circumcision stand? Theophilus the Christian said: You speak against yourself, Jew.
1:27
For above I showed you how Moses was a type of Christ, and all that he did ran ahead as a figure of Christ. For Zipporah, the woman who circumcised the boy, is understood as the synagogue. And what she says, Let the blood of the boy's circumcision stand, means this: that at Christ's coming the circumcision of boys ceased. So too God says thus to Moses: Build me an altar of uncircumcised stones, and you shall lay no iron upon them—meaning, namely, that Christ at His coming would build the church from an uncircumcised people. Simon the Jew said: Prove to me that Christ circumcised no one. Theophilus the Christian said: Believe, and you yourself will prove it to yourself, when you begin to unroll the fullness of the gospels.
1:28
There you will find Matthew the apostle, one of the tax-collectors, and Zacchaeus the chief of the tax-collectors, and you will find many uncircumcised who believed together with the Jews. For just as the sacrifices and victims of bulls and goats and rams and lambs were commanded to be offered, and being forbidden were abolished, and the lesser people—that is, ours—was preferred above the greater people, and the new testament was set before the old, so also God commanded that circumcision now be observed not of the flesh but of the heart. For God says to Rebecca in Genesis: Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples shall be divided from your belly, and people shall overcome people, and the elder shall serve the younger. And in Deuteronomy He says: You, O nations, shall be at the head, but the unbelieving people at the tail.
1:29
And Jacob, blessing Ephraim and Manasseh, switching his hand, laying his right hand upon the younger, was showing forth the changing of the creation. But for the new testament Isaiah says thus: Behold, I make new things, which now spring up, and I will set rivers in the desert—that is, the gospels in the church. And Jeremiah says: Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, and I will accomplish for the house of Israel and for the house of Judah a new testament, not such a testament as I arranged for your fathers in the day when I led them out of the land of Egypt. Hear now concerning circumcision! Moses the bearer of the law says: In the last days God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your seed, to love the Lord your God. And Jeremiah says:
1:30
You men of Judah and you who dwell in Jerusalem, renew newness among yourselves and do not sow among thorns. Be circumcised to your God and circumcise the foreskin of your heart, lest my anger go forth and burn, and there be none to quench it. To Joshua the son of Nun God said: Make for yourself knives of stone, exceedingly sharp, and sit a second time and circumcise the children of Israel. Was there then no iron? But God was speaking to Jesus our Christ, that through His apostle He would spiritually circumcise hearts. So indeed our apostle was called Simon and afterward received the name Peter. Simon the Jew said: You have indeed shown me clear proof through the Scriptures. But what can the circumcision of the heart be?
1:31
Or what foreskin is to be circumcised from the heart? Theophilus the Christian said: Every lust of desire is conceived from the heart. Therefore the circumcision of the new testament is such as God Christ, the Son of God, has shown: that we circumcise from ourselves lust, avarice, malice, covetousness, thefts, frauds, fornication, and everything which you do not wish done to yourself—do not do to another. This is the circumcision of Christians, which the first of the saints also had, namely Enoch, Noah, Job, Melchizedek, who had not the circumcision of the flesh but of the heart. Yet God could, if He had willed, have formed Adam circumcised. Simon the Jew said:
1:32
I am greatly troubled in thought that Christ could have endured so accursed and mocking a passion—if indeed what you say is true, that He was fastened to the gibbet of the cross by our fathers. We know well that Haman was cursed by our fathers and according to his desert was crucified, who had sought our race for destruction; and in his death we rejoice when the year has come round again, and we celebrate the solemnities of our vows, as we have received them handed down by our fathers. And we read that Absalom too, who was a parricide bent on his father's slaughter, hung upon a tree.
1:33
But if Christ endured this gibbet of death and hung upon the cross, why have we not received this very thing from our fathers, nor do we find Him suffering in our Scriptures, so that, if He were an enemy to our nation, we might rejoice? You will be put to shame, Theophilus, if you do not prove this saying at all. For it is written in Deuteronomy: Cursed is everyone who hangs upon a tree. Theophilus the Christian said: First receive the reason of this saying; recall above the reading of Deuteronomy. Of whom was it said? For thus says Moses: If anyone has sinned to the judgment of death, he shall be punished, and you shall hang him on a tree, and cursed shall be everyone who hangs on a tree. But he said this of the sinner who has committed a mortal sin.
1:34
But Christ had no sin, as all the prophets testify. Yet He had to suffer, that the Scriptures might be fulfilled. For Isaiah says: Because He did no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth, but the Lord delivered Him up for our sins. For elsewhere too we have shown that the prophet said: Behold, the word of the Lord has become to them a curse, and they would not have it. And again it says: He was reckoned among the accursed. Hear too Jeremiah, saying in the Lamentation of Jerusalem: Christ the Lord was seized in their destruction, under whose shadow we live among the nations. Now we know that the most holy David rested full of years in peace and endured no passion of death or of the cross.
1:35
Hear then in the twenty-first psalm Christ saying: They have dug through my hands and my feet, they have numbered all my bones. But they themselves regarded and gazed upon me, they divided my garments among themselves, and upon my vesture they cast lots. But You, O Lord, do not put far Your help; look to my defense, deliver my soul from the sword, and my only one from the hand of the dog; save me from the mouth of the lion, and my lowliness from the horns of the unicorns! I will declare Your name to my brothers; in the midst of the church I will praise You. Likewise in Isaiah: I stretched out my hands to a people not believing but contradicting me, who walked in ways not good but after their own sins. Likewise in Jeremiah:
1:36
uenite, mittamus lignum in panem eius et eradicemus a terra uitam eius. item in Deuteronomio: et erit uita tua pendens ante oculos tuos, et timebis die ac nocte et non credes uitae tuae. item in psalmo CXVIII: confige clauis a timore tuo carnes meas. item in psalmo CXL: dirigatur oratio mea sicut incensum in conspectu tuo et eleuatio manuum mearum sacrificium uespertinum. item apud Zachariam: et intuebuntur in me, in quem transfixerunt. item in psalmo LXXXVII: et exclamaui ad te, domine, tota die extendi manus meas ad te. item in Numeris: nunc quasi homo deus suspenditur et sicut filius hominis minas patitur. et in Canticis Canticorum ex persona ecclesiae dicit:
Come, let us cast wood into his bread and root out his life from the earth. Likewise in Deuteronomy: And your life shall hang before your eyes, and you shall fear day and night and shall not trust in your life. Likewise in the one hundred and eighteenth psalm: Nail my flesh fast with nails out of fear of You. Likewise in the one hundred and fortieth psalm: Let my prayer be directed as incense in Your sight, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Likewise in Zechariah: And they shall look upon me, whom they pierced. Likewise in the eighty-seventh psalm: And I cried out to You, O Lord, all the day I stretched out my hands to You. Likewise in Numbers: Now as a man God is hung up, and like a son of man He suffers threats. And in the Song of Songs it says, from the person of the church:
1:37
My brother is white and ruddy and pierced with a lance by the soldiers. What did the whiteness show but the faith of the people? But the ruddiness signifies the passion. For to this end He came in His first coming, that He might display all lowliness and disfigurement even unto the death of the cross. Hear, finally, in the twenty-first psalm: But I am a worm and no man, the reproach of men and the outcast of the people. All who beheld me mocked me, they spoke with their lips and shook their head. Likewise there: My strength has dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue has cleaved to my jaws, and You have brought me down into the dust of death. Likewise in the sixty-eighth psalm: It shall please the Lord above a young bullock that puts forth horns and hoofs.
1:38
What do you say, Jew—was David horned? Come now, understand that cluster of grapes in the book of Numbers, which two men carried back from the land of promise upon a pole; this surely was a figure of Christ hanging upon the tree, coming from the land of promise—that is, from Mary, who was of an earthborn lineage. And those who carried the pole showed forth the figure of two peoples: the one earlier, namely yours, turning its back on Christ; the other later, looking upon the cluster of grapes—namely, our people is understood. Simon the Jew said: What will you say concerning the pomegranate, which was brought to Moses together with that same cluster? Theophilus the Christian said: Most rightly did the pomegranate follow the cluster.
1:39
figura scilicet ecclesiae fuit habens intra se populum rubeo sanguinis Christi censitum. Simon Iudaeus dixit: Quid de ficulneis dicturus es, uel quibus argumentis tractatibus tuis probabis ficum peccatum non esse, cum, quando protoplastus Adam in transgressione sua folia ficus pudenda contexit, quae fuit prurigo et amaritudo peccati?. Theophilus Chri.stianus dixit: Supra cutem ista intellegis, Iudaee. nam arbor ficus et tegumenta foliarum ueteris hominis figura intellegitur. nam si uelis spiritalem hominem considerare hoc est interiorem, pomum de ficulneis ad Moysen de terra repromissionis adlatum inuenies spiritalem uitam;
也就是說,它乃是教會的預表,內中有一群以基督紅血所登錄的子民。猶太人西門說:那麼你對無花果樹要說甚麼呢?或你要用論文中哪些論證來證明無花果不是罪呢?因為當受造之初的亞當在他的過犯中用無花果葉遮蓋他的羞處,那豈不是罪的搔癢與苦楚麼?基督徒提阿非羅說:猶太人哪,你只從皮面理解這些事。因為無花果樹和葉子的遮蓋乃是舊人的預表。因為你若願意思想屬靈的人,就是裏面的人,你就會發現那從應許之地帶給摩西的無花果樹的果子乃是屬靈的生命;
namely, it was a figure of the Church, having within itself a people enrolled by the red blood of Christ. Simon the Jew said: What will you say about the fig trees? Or by what arguments in your treatises will you prove that the fig is not sin, since, when the first-formed Adam in his transgression covered his shameful parts with fig leaves, which were the itch and bitterness of sin? Theophilus the Christian said: You understand these things only at skin-level, O Jew. For the fig tree and the leaf-coverings are understood as a figure of the old man. For if you are willing to consider the spiritual man, that is, the inner man, you will find the fruit of the fig trees brought to Moses from the land of promise to be the spiritual life;
1:40
just as to Hezekiah king of Judea, after the increase of his life, a lump of figs as the chief medicine was applied for the health of his flesh. For it would have been enough for God to have said: I have added to you fifteen years to the time of your life. But he adds, saying: Take for yourself a lump of figs and pound it and apply it as a poultice, and you shall be healed—that is, that when the assault of lust is broken, you may recover health. Let us now return to the lowliness of the first coming of Christ, of which we were speaking. Hear the prophet Isaiah: O God, who has believed our report, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? We announced concerning him: like a little infant child, there is no comeliness in him nor honor. And we saw him, and he had no comeliness nor beauty: a man set in affliction and knowing how to bear infirmity.
1:41
because his face was turned away, he was despised and not esteemed. He bore our sins and is in sorrows for us. But he himself, because he was ill-treated, was led like a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before its shearer, so he opened not his mouth. In his humiliation his judgment was taken away. But who shall declare his generation? For his life is taken from the earth; from the crimes of my people he was led to death. And I will give the wicked for his burial and the rich for his death, because he did no sin, nor was deceit found in his mouth. But the Lord delivered him up for our sins, and he was reckoned among the wicked. Likewise there he testifies concerning the lowliness of his first coming, saying:
1:42
I gave my back to the scourges, my cheeks to the blows, and I did not turn my face from the foulness of spitting, and the Lord was my helper. And Jeremiah says: I was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and I did not know. Concerning this lamb, as an image of Christ, Moses in Egypt celebrated the Passover for the deliverance of the people. Nor could the people otherwise have been freed from the house of bondage and from the oppression of Pharaoh, unless the lamb were slain and the Passover celebrated and the doorposts of the house marked with its blood, so that, when that destroying angel came, those who were in the houses, at the sight of the sign of the blood, might be saved. This sacrament, foretold beforehand, was fulfilled in the coming of Christ.
1:43
For on this account Christ in his first coming was slain, that he might free us from the power of the devil and from the worship of idols. Now he was called a yearling, because, after he was baptized in the Jordan, he preached for a year and so suffered, and we are sealed on the forehead with his blood, so that in the second coming, when the devastation of this world shall come, we may be able to be saved. As author of this matter I will offer the prophet Ezekiel, who himself also signifies the two comings of Christ, saying: Pass through the midst of Jerusalem and you shall mark a sign on the foreheads of the men who grieve and groan over the iniquities which are done in the land. And again he signifies the second coming, the devastation of those not sealed, saying:
1:44
ite in ciuitatem et nolite parcere seni neque iuueni, et mulieres et paruu-los occidite gladio, ut deleantur; super quos autem signum inueneritis, ne tetigeritis eos et a sanctis meis incipite. hoc signum et Raab meretrix, quae [in] figura ecclesiae fuit, coccum et spartum in fenestra suspendit, ut, cum Iesus ueniret Hiericho debellare, uiso signo coccini Raab et, qui in domo eius essent, saluarentur. ita et in aduentu Christi, cum uenerit Christus filius dei saeculum istum igni cremare, ecclesia et, qui in ea fronte signati inuenti fuerint, saluabuntur;
你們進入城去,不要顧惜老人,也不要顧惜少年人,要用刀殺滅婦女和孩童;但凡你們看見有記號之人,不要觸碰他們,且要從我的聖者起首。這記號也是妓女喇合所懸的;她乃是教會的預表,她在窗戶上掛了一條朱紅線繩,使約書亞來攻打耶利哥時,因看見喇合朱紅的記號,她和她家中的人都得救。照樣,在基督降臨、神的兒子基督來用火焚燒這世界時,教會和那些在教會中被發現額上有記號的人,也必得救;
Go into the city and do not spare the old man nor the young man, and slay with the sword the women and the little ones, that they may be destroyed; but those on whom you find the sign, do not touch them, and begin from my holy ones. This sign also Rahab the harlot, who was a figure of the Church, suspended in her window—scarlet and a cord—so that, when Joshua came to make war upon Jericho, at the sight of Rahab's scarlet sign, she and those who were in her house might be saved. So also in the coming of Christ, when Christ the Son of God shall come to burn this world with fire, the Church and those who are found sealed in it on the forehead shall be saved;
1:45
just as Hosea, who was a type of Christ, is commanded to take a wife of fornication, that is, the Church, which Christ took out of the fornication of idols: thus said the Lord: Take to yourself a wife of fornication; that is, he took her out of the fornication of idols, since the beginning of the fornication of idols is servitude. Simon the Jew said: Then is the Church a harlot? Theophilus the Christian said: For what is a harlot understood to be except one subject to all who come? So too the Church denies to none who come to her the gain of faith. For when the synagogue was repudiated, Christ took the Church to himself. For hear Jeremiah saying: I have sent away your mother and given her a bill of divorce, which I gave to your mother because I have put her away.
1:46
And another prophet says: Plead with your mother, for I am not her husband. For this is Christ the righteous Son of God, concerning whom Solomon also prophesied in the person of the Jews, saying: Let us therefore beset the righteous one, for he is unprofitable to us and contrary to our works, and he reproaches us with sins against the law, he charges us with sins against our discipline, he professes to have the knowledge of God and names himself the Son of God. And he has become to us a reproof of our thoughts. For he is grievous even to behold, because his life is unlike that of others and his ways are changed.
1:47
We were counted by him as worthless, and he holds himself off from our ways as from filth, and he sets the latter end of the righteous above all, and he boasts that he has God as Father and names himself the Son of God. Let us therefore see whether his words are true, and let us test what things shall come to him. And let us know what his last things shall be. For if he is the true Son of God, he will take him up and free him from the hands of his adversaries. Let us question him with insult and torment, that we may know his reverence and prove his patience. Let us condemn him to a most shameful death; for there shall be a regard for him out of his own words. These things they thought, and they erred; for their own malice blinded them, and they knew not the mysteries of God.
1:48
et Moyses in Deuteronomio dicit: innocentem et iustum non occides. surrexisse illum a mortuis scripturae testantur. inuenimus in psalmo XV: quoniam non derelinques animam meam in infernum neque dabis sanctum tuum uidere corruptionem. notas fecisti mihi uias uitae, adimplebis me laetitia cum uultu tuo; item in psalmo XXVIIII: domine, eduxisti ab inferis animam meam; item in psalmo III dicit: ego dormiui et somnum cepi et exsurrexi, quoniam dominus suscipiet me. et Osee propheta testatur illum a mortuis tertio die resurrexisse, dicens: uiuificabit !nos post biduum in die tertia. item ad Moysen dominus in Exodo dicens:
And Moses in Deuteronomy says: You shall not slay the innocent and the righteous. The Scriptures testify that he rose from the dead. We find in Psalm 15: For you will not leave my soul in hell, nor will you give your holy one to see corruption. You have made known to me the ways of life, you will fill me with gladness with your countenance; likewise in Psalm 29: O Lord, you have brought up my soul from the lower regions; likewise in Psalm 3 it says: I slept and took my rest and rose up, because the Lord will sustain me. And the prophet Hosea testifies that he rose from the dead on the third day, saying: He will revive us after two days, on the third day. Likewise the Lord says to Moses in Exodus:
1:49
Go down and testify to the people and purify them today and tomorrow, that they may wash their garments and be ready on the third day. For on the third day the Lord appeared on Mount Sinai. And Jonah, when he was sent to preach to the Ninevites, demonstrated the type of Christ, that after three days he would come out of the belly of the whale, which was hell. And Isaiah says: Now I will rise up, says the Lord, now I will be glorified, now you shall see, now you shall be put to shame. The strength of your hope shall be vain, fire shall consume you. And in Psalm 77 it says: And the Lord rose up as one sleeping, and as a mighty man flushed with wine. By the wine which he mentioned, his passion is shown.
1:50
For in his passion, from the sixth hour to the ninth hour, darkness fell, night closed the day, as the prophet Amos says: The sun shall set at noon and the day of light shall be darkened, and I will turn your festal days into mourning and all your songs into lamentation. And Jeremiah says: She who bears is terrified, weariness has seized her soul; the sun has set while it is still day; she is confounded and accursed; the rest of them I will give to the sword in the sight of their enemies. But that after the resurrection he ascended into the heavens and sits at the right hand of the Father, all the Scriptures testify, saying in Psalm 67: Make a way for him who ascends above the sunset; the Lord is his name.
1:51
turbabuntur a facie eius, patris orfanorum et iudicis uiduarum; item in psalmo XLVI: ascendit deus in iubilatione et dominus in uoce tubae; item in psalmo XVIII: a summo caelo egressio eius et occursus eius usque ad summum caeli, et non est, qui se abscondat a calore eius. lex domini inmaculata, conuertens animas; item in psalmo XVII: inclinauit caelum et descendit, et caligo sub pedibus eius, et ascendit super Cherubin et uolauit, uolauit super pennas uentorum et posuit tenebras latibulum suum; prae fulgore in conspectu eius nubes transierunt, grando et carbones ignis; et intonuit de caelo dominus, et altissimus dedit uocem suam;
他們必在祂面前驚惶,祂是孤兒的父,寡婦的伸冤者;又如詩篇四十六篇:神在歡呼聲中上升,耶和華在號角聲中上升;又如詩篇十八篇:祂從天的盡頭出來,環行直到天的盡頭,沒有一物能隱藏不受祂的熱氣。耶和華的律法純全,能甦醒人的靈魂;又如詩篇十七篇:祂使天下垂,親自降臨,有黑暗在祂腳下,祂坐著基路伯飛行,祂藉著風的翅膀快飛,以黑暗為藏身之處;因祂面前的光輝,密雲飛過,並有冰雹火炭;耶和華也從天上打雷,至高者發出聲音;
They shall be troubled at his face, the father of orphans and judge of widows; likewise in Psalm 46: God ascended with a shout and the Lord with the sound of the trumpet; likewise in Psalm 18: His going forth is from the height of heaven and his circuit even to the height of heaven, and there is none who can hide himself from his heat. The law of the Lord is unspotted, converting souls; likewise in Psalm 17: He bowed the heavens and came down, and darkness was under his feet, and he ascended upon the Cherubim and flew, he flew upon the wings of the winds and made darkness his hiding place; before the brightness in his sight the clouds passed, hail and coals of fire; and the Lord thundered from heaven, and the Most High gave his voice;
1:52
misit de summo et accepit me et liberauit me et eripuit me ab inimicis meis potentissimis et ab his, qui oderunt me. et Esaias dicit: quis est hic, qui uenit ex Edom dominus, rubor uestimentorum ex Bosor, sic praeclarus in stola et uiolentus? et ex persona Christi respondetur: ego disputo iudicium et adnuntio ueritatem. item in psalmo XXIII ascendente Christo in caelis ianitoribus angelis dictum est: tollite portas, principes, uestri, et eleuamini, portae aeternales, et introibit rex gloriae. at illi, qui sciebant Christum uerbo in uirginem insinuatum, mirantes, quod tali habitu et trophaeam uictricem reportans caelum conscenderet, interrogant dicentes: quis est iste rex gloriae?
He sent from on high and took me and delivered me and rescued me from my most powerful enemies and from those who hated me. And Isaiah says: Who is this who comes from Edom, the Lord, with redness of garments from Bozrah, so glorious in his robe and mighty? And it is answered in the person of Christ: I dispute judgment and announce truth. Likewise in Psalm 23, when Christ ascended into the heavens, it was said to the angelic gatekeepers: Lift up your gates, O princes, and be lifted up, O eternal gates, and the King of glory shall enter in. But those who knew that Christ had entered the Virgin by the Word, marveling that in such a manner and bearing the victorious trophy he was mounting heaven, ask, saying: Who is this King of glory?
1:53
quibus responsum datur: dominus uirtutum ipse est rex gloriae. item in psalmo CVIIII: dixit dominus domino meo:. sede ad dexteram meam, donec ponam inimicos tuos scabellum pedum tuorum. uirgam uirtutis tuae emittit dominus ex Sion, et dominare in medio inimicorum tuorum. tecum principium in die uirtutis tuae, in splendore sanctorum. ex utero. ante lu.ciferum genui te. iurauit dominus et non paenitebit eum: tu es sacerdos in aeternum secundum ordinem Melchisedech, dominus a dexteris tuis. audi nunc et claritatem regni secundi aduentus eius apud Danihelum: uidebam nocte in uisu, et ecce in nubibus caeli quasi filius hominis ueniens uenit usque ad ueterem dierum, et data est ei potestas regia;
有話回答他們說:萬軍之耶和華,祂就是那榮耀的王。又如詩篇一百零九篇:耶和華對我主說:你坐在我的右邊,等我使你仇敵作你的腳凳。耶和華必使你權能的杖從錫安伸出;你要在你仇敵中掌權。當你掌權之日,你的子民在聖者的榮美中甘心獻上自己。在晨星之先,我從腹中生了你。耶和華起了誓,決不後悔:你是照著麥基洗德的等次永遠為祭司,主在你的右邊。如今也要聽但以理書中祂第二次降臨之國的榮耀:我夜間在異象中觀看,見有一位像人子的,駕著天雲而來,直到亘古常在者那裏,得了治國的權柄;
To whom the answer is given: The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Likewise in Psalm 109: The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. The Lord shall send forth the rod of your power out of Sion, and rule in the midst of your enemies. With you is the dominion in the day of your power, in the splendor of the holy ones. From the womb before the morning star I begot you. The Lord has sworn and will not repent: You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek, the Lord at your right hand. Hear now also the glory of the kingdom of his second coming in Daniel: I saw in the night in a vision, and behold, in the clouds of heaven one like a son of man coming, he came even to the Ancient of days, and there was given to him royal power;
1:54
all the kings of the earth by their kind and all glory shall serve him, and his faith is eternal, which shall not be moved, and his kingdom shall not be corrupted. Likewise in Psalm 92: The Lord has reigned, he is clothed with majesty, the Lord is clothed with strength and has girded himself with power. For he has established the world, which shall not be moved. Your throne is prepared, O God, from that age you are. And in Psalm 49: The God of gods, the Lord, has spoken and called the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting; out of Sion is the form of his beauty. God shall come manifestly, our God, and shall not keep silence. Fire shall burn in his sight, and round about him a mighty tempest. He called the heaven above and the earth, to judge his people.
1:55
Gather to him his holy ones, those who order his covenant in sacrifices. And the heavens shall declare his righteousness, for God is judge. Likewise in Psalm 44 it says: Gird your sword upon your thigh, O most mighty, in your comeliness and your beauty; and bend your bow, prosper, advance and reign for the sake of truth and meekness and righteousness. Likewise in Psalm 95 it says: Say among the nations: The Lord has reigned from the tree. Likewise in Isaiah: A child is born to us, whose government is set upon his shoulders, and his name shall be called the angel of great counsel.
1:56
And if you wish to know the fullness of the Gospels, you will find in our John that Christ, going to his passion, bore the cross upon his shoulders, concerning which Isaiah says: Whose government is set upon his shoulders. Likewise in Psalm 71: O God, give your judgment to the king and your righteousness to the king's son, to judge your people in righteousness and your poor in judgment. Let the mountains receive peace for your people and the hills righteousness. He shall judge the needy of the people and shall save the children of the poor and shall humble the slanderer, and he shall endure with the sun and before the moon throughout generations of generations. In his days righteousness shall arise and abundance of peace, until the moon be taken away.
1:57
And he shall have dominion from sea to sea and from the rivers to the ends of the earth. Before him the Ethiopians shall fall down, and his enemies shall lick the earth and shall worship him always, all the day they shall bless him. And there shall be a support in the earth on the tops of the mountains, his fruit shall be exalted above Lebanon, and they shall flourish out of the city like the hay of the earth. Let his name be blessed throughout the ages of ages, before the sun his name endures and before the moon his throne, and in him shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed, all nations shall magnify him. Simon the Jew said: Indeed you have shown me all things prefigured in Christ by manifest proof through my own Scriptures.
1:58
And I would indeed have wished to believe, were it not that the consideration of this psalm calls me back. For this psalm was spoken concerning Solomon; so much so that its very title refutes you, since it says: A Psalm concerning Solomon. Theophilus the Christian said: That envier, who deceived the first-formed man and has just now deceived your people, through whose envy death came into the world, this one indeed has also taken hold of the understanding of your heart, so that you, wandering, do not understand a matter that is manifest and set in the light. For Solomon reigned within the fixed bounds of Judea for forty years, from Dan to Beersheba, and afterward he sinned, as it says in the third book of Kingdoms:
1:59
And Solomon did evil and did not walk in the way of his father David, and he built an idol to Moab, Chemosh, and to Trivia, the abomination of the Sidonians; and the Lord stirred up Satan against Solomon himself, Hadad the Idumean. But the kingdom of Christ has been stretched out beyond unknown wildernesses. For of whom does God say through the prophet: And he shall endure with the sun and before the moon throughout generations of generations, and he shall have dominion from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth? Does he say this of Solomon, whose kingdom and years I have shown you above? But Christ reigns always and everywhere. Simon the Jew said: I see that the devil, the enemy of my fathers, who was blinding the eyes of my heart, withdraws from my mind.
1:60
For I have begun to wish to know the light of truth. Theophilus the Christian said: Believe then, that you may, being enlightened, come out of your bonds in every respect, just as Isaiah says concerning Christ: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; therefore he has anointed me and sent me to bring good news to the poor, to heal the contrite of heart, to lead out from chains those who are bound and those sitting in the prison house in darkness and the shadow of death, to give light to the blind. For what is understood by the prison house and men oppressed in chains, except the men of this world held by the blindness of ignorance and bound by the sins of the devil? As it says in Genesis: And there was darkness over the abyss, and God said: Let there be light!
1:61
For what is the abyss understood to be except the hearts of men blinded by the darkness of ignorance? But when Christ, who is the light, comes, the darkness of ignorance withdraws. Simon the Jew said: Indeed you have made plain to me many hidden and unheard-of things. But still there remains in my soul a scruple of distrust, in that you observe all things religiously, yet you neglect the Sabbath, which God commanded to be kept and preserved, and moreover you take food and wine after the manner of the Gentiles, when God specifically prescribed which of the animals and fish ought to be eaten and which to be abhorred, and that their carcasses should not be touched. Unless this too be proved to me by the Scriptures, I am in danger as to believing. Theophilus the Christian said:
1:62
Iam et superius dixi tibi, quod diabolus inuideat tibi, quod scilicet filius sis patrum tuorum, qui tot beneficiis fulti et ab Aegypto liberati — ad uicem murorum mare circumstetit undas —, in heremo largis dapibus adparati caelestique cibo manna saturati, in obliuionem transgressi profanos deos, quos colerent, ausi sunt postulare. merito deus per Hieremiam increpat et obiurgat genus uestrum dicens: si mutabit Aethiopus colorem et pardus uarietatem, sic et uos mutamini a doctrina mala. sabbata scilicet imaginaria requies septimi diei tradita fuit, primum quod Iesus filius Naue, ut Hiericho debellaret, per septem dies uicibus muros circuibat;
我在上面已經告訴你,魔鬼忌妒你,乃因你是你列祖的子孫,他們蒙了這麼多的恩惠、從埃及得了釋放——海水如牆環立代替水浪——在曠野中以豐盛筵席豫備、又以天上的食物嗎哪餵飽,竟陷入遺忘、犯了過犯,膽敢求他們所拜的褻瀆之神。神藉耶利米責備斥責你的族類是合宜的,說:古實人豈能改變皮膚?豹豈能改變斑點?你們這慣行惡的,也照樣難以改變。安息日,就是第七日那虛擬的安息,乃是作為豫表所賜的:第一,因為嫩的兒子約書亞為要攻打耶利哥,七日之內輪流繞城;
I have already said to you above that the devil envies you, namely because you are a son of your fathers, who, supported by so many benefits and freed from Egypt—the sea stood around as walls in place of waters—and prepared with lavish banquets in the desert and filled with the heavenly food of manna, fell into forgetfulness, transgressed, and dared to demand profane gods to worship. Rightly does God through Jeremiah rebuke and chide your race, saying: If the Ethiopian will change his color and the leopard his spots, so also you change from evil teaching. The Sabbath, namely the imaginary rest of the seventh day, was given as a figure: first, because Joshua the son of Nun, in order to make war upon Jericho, circled the walls in turns for seven days;
1:63
handling weapons of war and carrying the ark of the covenant, and on the seventh day they circled it seven times. It is manifest truth that either they began on a Sabbath or on a Sabbath, with the walls of Jericho falling, they conquered. There is added also this, that in the Maccabees they gained their greatest victory over their enemies on a Sabbath and avenged the destruction of their adversaries with their swords on a Sabbath. There is added also this, which rejects the human Sabbath: God, through Isaiah saying: My soul hates your fasting and your festal days and your Sabbaths. You have become to me an abundance; I will no longer forgive your sins.
1:64
But that Sabbath which God desires is that you ought to rest from evil works, so that in the seventh thousandth year, which is understood as the Sabbath of Sabbaths, you may be found free from evil works by the world. This shall be the tender Sabbath holy to God, in which God delights. But as to the foods which you doubt you ought to eat—it is not swine's flesh but swinish deeds that you are forbidden to admit. Likewise, wallowing in water mixed with mud, you join your sister to yourself in marriage, you join blood with blood, you ransack the earth with robberies, you make your festivals public, you pray in the streets. Behold how you sin! And you do not understand that it is written of you in Psalm 16:
1:65
They are filled with swine's flesh and have left their leavings to their little ones—that is, you propagate your sin to your posterity. But of fish you eat those with scaly skin; yet the rest, which you pretend to avoid, drawn out with nets and mingled in the multitude of fish, thoroughly drained out through fish-sauce you sweetly eat. But show me by the Scriptures where you have received that the wine of Christians is forbidden, and you will rightly be able to overcome me. But I will show you where the Jewish wine is forbidden and where we are forbidden to eat your foods. Hear the prophet Isaiah saying: Your hands are full of blood; wash yourselves, be clean! Likewise in Psalm 13 it says: Their feet are swift to shed blood.
1:66
Destruction and misery are in their ways, and the way of peace they have not known. Behold what kind of feet! And with what kind of hands do you make wine and unleavened bread! And in Deuteronomy it says: For their wine is from the vine of Sodom, and their stock from Gomorrah. Their grape is a grape of gall, a cluster of bitterness within them. The wine of dragons is their wine and the incurable wrath of asps. Are not these things gathered with me and sealed in my treasuries? Refuted by so many and so great testimonies, Simon, even if you cannot believe, you contradict your own salvation. Read therefore Daniel, and you will find Nebuchadnezzar saying: Did we not cast three men into the furnace? Behold, I see four men, and the appearance of the fourth is like the Son of God. What do you say, O Jew?
1:67
Nebuchadnezzar the barbarian recognized the Son of God, whom you are slow to find. And see that the rebuke of the prophet Habakkuk be not fulfilled in you, saying: See, you despisers, and look and marvel, for I work a work in your days which you do not believe, even if someone should tell it to you. Simon the Jew said: O bringer of salvation, Theophilus, good physician of the sick, I can say no more. Bid me be catechized and be consecrated by the sign of the faith of Jesus Christ. For I believe that through the laying on of hands I shall receive the washing away of my offenses. Theophilus the Christian said: Rather, a blessing! Thus Isaac blessed Jacob, and through the laying on of hands he received a blessing, so that the greater came out of the lesser.
1:68
So also Ephraim and Manasseh were enlarged through the laying on of hands. Then Theophilus anointed Simon the Jew. And Simon, having obtained faith, began to give thanks, saying: I give you thanks, Jesus, whom I have never seen face to face, but now I believe in you. Thanks to you, Jesus, whom I have never heard, but now I hear. I call upon you, Jesus, whose understanding I did not have before, but now I desire my understanding to be in you, through whom it has known Theophilus your disciple. Lord Jesus, if I am worthy of faith, confirm me also unto your knowledge. For you show the way to those who wander and call back the lost and raise the dead and confirm the unbelieving by your faith and enlighten the eyes of the heart for the blind.
1:69
tu es ipse tabernaculum sanctum, qui fuisti cum patribus nostris in deserto, tu candelabrum luminis, tu altarium et panis propositionis, tu ara, tu uictima uoluntaria; tu es, domine, uita et margarita, crystallum, iugum, aratrum. oro, domine, ignorantiae et incredulitatis meae ne memineris. tu enim absconsa beneficia praestans es, qui mihi omnia donare dignatus es. tibi sit honor, potestas, laus, gloria hic et in cuncta inmortalia saecula saeculorum. amen.
You are yourself the holy tabernacle, who were with our fathers in the wilderness; you are the candlestick of light, you the altar and the bread of the presence, you the altar of sacrifice, you the willing victim; you are, O Lord, life and pearl, crystal, yoke, plow. I pray, Lord, remember not my ignorance and unbelief. For you are one who bestows hidden benefits, who have deigned to grant me all things. To you be honor, power, praise, glory here and throughout all the immortal ages of ages. Amen.
