1:1
Cum me libellos tuos mecum relaturum praecedentibus litteris indicassem, instantiam et exactionem pueri quem miseras lentare nullatenus potui. emisi itaque florulenta beatitudinis tuae opera non parum anxius, ne necdum descripta tam iugiter tam grauiter ruentibus imbribus labefactarentur. percurri ea semel tantum uniuersa miratus. concedat dominus, ut speciosa haec in Christo instructionum nostrarum gloriae tuae opera te in paginis tuis duce aliquando percenseam. hoc unum precor, ne me diu his institutionibus fraudari feras, sed unum me de iuuenibus tuis, quorum haec eruditioni ordinasti, habens hoc instantius habere me haec uelis, quo me magis aeui senium cum iuuentae imperitia premit.
When in my earlier letter I had indicated that I would bring your little books back with me, I could in no way slow the insistence and exaction of the boy whom you had sent. And so, not a little anxious, I dispatched both volumes of your most blessed and flowery work, lest, not yet copied out, they should be damaged by rains falling so continuously and so heavily. I ran through them all but once, in wonder. May the Lord grant that someday, under your guidance in your own pages, I may review these works of our instruction, lovely in Christ, to your glory. This one thing I beg: do not suffer me to be cheated for long of these teachings, but counting me as one of your young men, for whose learning you arranged these things, may you wish me to possess them all the more urgently, the more the old age of my years presses upon me together with the inexperience of youth.
1:2
memorem te mei dominus ad profectum ecclesiae suae diu semet, beatissime papa.
May the Lord long keep you mindful of me, for the advancement of his Church, most blessed father.
