XI m. IIII d. XII. Fuit autem temporibus Carini, a die XVI kal. Ian., a consulatu Caro II et Carino (283), usque in die X kal. Mai., Diocletiano IIII et Constantio II (296).
He also decreed that whoever among the faithful should bury a martyr should by no means bury him without a dalmatic or a purple-dyed colobium, this however to be made known to him. He held five ordinations in the month of December: fourteen presbyters, five deacons; bishops in various places, to the number of nine. And he was crowned with martyrdom. He too was buried in the cemetery of Callistus on the Appian Way, on the eighth day before the Kalends of August. And the episcopate was vacant for eight days. Gaius, Dalmatian by nation, of the family of the emperor Diocletian, son of Gaius, occupied the see eleven years, four months, and twelve days. He lived in the times of Carinus, from the sixteenth day before the Kalends of January, from the consulship of Carus (his second) and Carinus (283), until the tenth day before the Kalends of May, in the consulship of Diocletian (his fourth) and Constantius (his second) (296).
1:38
3 Hic regiones diuidit diaconibus. Hic fugiens persecutionem Diocletiani in criptis habitando, martyrio coronatur post annos VIII. 4 Hic fecit ordinationes IIII per mens. Decemb., presbiteros XXV, diaconos VIII ; episcopos per diuersa loca V. [Qui post annos XI, cum Gauinio fratre suo, propter filiam Gauini presbiteri, nomine Susanna, martyrio coronatur.] Qui uero sepultus est in cymiterio Calisti, uia Appia, X kal. Mai. Et cessauit episcopatus dies XI.
He decreed that all the orders in the church should be ascended thus: that if anyone should be deemed worthy of the episcopate, he should be doorkeeper, lector, exorcist, server, subdeacon, deacon, presbyter, and thereafter be ordained bishop. He divided the regions among the deacons. Fleeing the persecution of Diocletian by dwelling in the crypts, he was crowned with martyrdom after eight years. He held four ordinations in the month of December: twenty-five presbyters, eight deacons; bishops in various places, five. [After eleven years he, together with his brother Gabinus, was crowned with martyrdom on account of the daughter of the presbyter Gabinus, named Susanna.] He was indeed buried in the cemetery of Callistus on the Appian Way, on the tenth day before the Kalends of May. And the episcopate was vacant for eleven days.
1:39
1 Marcellinus, natione Romanus, ex patre Proiecto, sedit ann. VIIII m. IIII dies XVI.
Marcellinus, Roman by nation, son of Projectus, occupied the see nine years, four months, and sixteen days. He lived in the times of Diocletian and Maximian, from the Kalends of July, from the consulship of Diocletian (his sixth) and Constantius (his second) (296) until that of Diocletian (his ninth) and Maximian (his eighth) (304), at which time there was a great persecution, so that within thirty days seventeen thousand persons of both sexes throughout the various provinces were crowned with Christian martyrdom. On account of this, Marcellinus himself was led to sacrifice to offer incense, which he indeed did. And after a few days, brought to repentance, he was beheaded by the same Diocletian for the faith of Christ together with Claudius and Cyrinus and Antoninus, and they are crowned with martyrdom.
1:40
And after this deed the holy bodies lay in the open street for twenty-five days as an example to Christians, by order of Diocletian. And thereafter the presbyter Marcellus gathered the bodies by night, together with presbyters and deacons, with hymns, and buried them on the Salarian Way, in the cemetery of Priscilla, in a chamber that lies open to this present day, which he himself had appointed as a penitent while he was being dragged to execution, in a crypt beside the body of the holy Crescentio, on the seventh day before the Kalends of May. He held two ordinations in the month of December: four presbyters, two deacons; bishops in various places, five. From that day the episcopate was vacant seven years, six months, and twenty-five days, while Diocletian persecuted the Christians.
1:41
Marcellus, Roman by nation, son of Benedictus, from the region of the Via Lata, occupied the see five years, seven months, and twenty-one days. He lived in the times of Maxentius, from the consulship of Maxentius (his fourth) and Maximus until after the consulship. He made the cemetery of Novella on the Salarian Way, and established twenty-five title-churches in the city of Rome, as it were dioceses, for the baptism and penance of the many who were being converted from the pagans, and for the burials of the martyrs. He ordained twenty-five presbyters in the city of Rome and two deacons in the month of December; bishops throughout the regions, twenty-one. He was constrained and seized because he was ordering the church, and was apprehended by Maxentius so that he might deny he was a bishop and be humbled to the sacrifices of demons.
1:42
But always despising and mocking the words and commands of Maxentius, he was condemned to the catabulum (the public stable). While he served in the stable for many days, he did not cease to serve the Lord with prayers and fastings. But in the ninth month his whole clergy came by night and rescued him by night from the stable. A certain matron named Lucina, a widow, who had been married fifteen years with her husband Marcus and had lived nineteen years in her widowhood, received the blessed man; and she dedicated her house as a title-church in the name of the blessed Marcellus, where day and night she gave praise to the Lord Jesus Christ with hymns and prayers.
1:43
Febr. 6 Et cessauit episcopatus dies XX. Lucina uero scriptione damnata est. 1 Eusebius, natione Grecus, ex medico, sedit ann. VI m. I d. III.
When Maxentius heard this, he sent and seized the blessed Marcellus again, and ordered that planks be brought into that same church and that the animals of the public stable be gathered there and kept, and that the blessed Marcellus himself should serve them. Yet in the service of the animals, naked, clothed only in a hair-shirt, he died. His body the blessed Lucina gathered and buried in the cemetery of Priscilla on the Salarian Way, on the seventeenth day before the Kalends of February. And the episcopate was vacant for twenty days. Lucina indeed was condemned by a written sentence. Eusebius, Greek by nation, formerly a physician, occupied the see six years, one month, and three days. He lived in the times of Constans. In his time was found the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, on the fifth day before the Nones of May, and there was baptized Judas, who was also called Cyriacus.
1:44
He found heretics in the city of Rome, whom he reconciled by the laying on of the hand. He held one ordination in the month of December: thirteen presbyters, three deacons; bishops in various places, to the number of fourteen. He too was buried in the cemetery of Callistus on the Appian Way, on the sixth day before the Nones of October. And the episcopate was vacant for seven days. Miltiades, African by nation, occupied the see four years, seven months, and eight days, from the Nones of July, from the consulship of Maxentius (his ninth) until that of Maximus (his second), which fell in the month of September in the consulship of Volusianus and Rufinus. He decreed that on no account should any of the faithful keep a fast on the Lord's Day or on Thursday, because the pagans celebrated those days as a kind of sacred fast. And Manichaeans were found in the City.
1:45
From that same day he ordained that the consecrated offerings should be sent through the churches from the bishop's consecration, which is called the fermentum. He held one ordination in the month of December: seven presbyters, five deacons; bishops in various places, to the number of eleven. He was buried in the cemetery of Callistus on the Appian Way, on the fourth day before the Ides of December. And the episcopate was vacant for sixteen days. Silvester, Roman by nation, son of Rufinus, occupied the see twenty-three years, ten months, and eleven days. He lived in the times of Constantine and Volusianus, from the Kalends of February until the Kalends of January in the consulship of Constantius and Volusianus.
1:46
2 Hic exilio fuit in monte Seracten et postmodum rediens cum gloria baptizauit Constantinum Augustum, quem curauit Dominus a lepra, cuius persecutionem primo fugiens exilio fuisse cognoscitur. 3 Hic fecit in urbe Roma ecclesiam in praedium cuiusdam presbiteri sui, qui cognominabatur Equitius, quem titulum Romanum constituit, iuxta termas Domitianas, qui usque in hodiernum diem appellatur titulus Equitii, ubi et haec dona constituit : patenam argenteam, pensantem libras XX, ex dono Augusti Constantini. 奧爾菲烏區城內一座房屋,每年出產五十八又三分之一索利都。他為各教會頒布了一項規章。也是在他的時代,奉他的命令,在庇推尼的尼西亞召開了一次會議;有三百一十八位大公教會的主教聚集,他們陳明了純全、大公、無瑕的信仰,並定了亞流、佛提努和撒伯流以及他們跟從者的罪。在羅馬城裡,他親自憑奧古斯都的議決召聚了二百六十七人,再次定了加里斯都、亞流、佛提努和撒伯流的罪;

and he decreed that a presbyter should not receive a repentant Arian unless the bishop of the designated place did so, and that chrism should be confected by the bishop, and that bishops should have the privilege of signing the baptized, on account of heretical persuasion. He also decreed this, that the presbyter should anoint the baptized with chrism taken up from the water, on account of the eventuality of death in passing. He decreed that no layman should dare to bring a charge against a cleric. He decreed that deacons should wear dalmatics in church and that their left arms should be covered with linen palls. He decreed that no cleric, for any cause whatsoever, should enter the court of justice, nor plead a case before a girt judge, except in church.
1:50
Hic constituit ut sacrificium altaris non in siricum neque in pannum tinctum celebraretur, nisi tantum in lineum terrenum terrenum procreatum, sicut corpus domini nostri Iesu Christi in sindonem lineam mundam sepultus est : sic missas caelebrarentur. 8 Hic constituit ut si quis desideraret in ecclesia militare aut proficere, ut esset lector annos XXX, exorcista dies XXX, acolitus annos V, subdiaconus annos V, custus martyrum annos V, diaconus annos VII, presbiter III, probatus ex omni parte, etiam et a foris qui sunt, testimonium habere bonum, unius uxoris uirum, uxorem a sacerdote benedictam, et sic ad ordinem episcopatus accedere ;
他規定,祭壇的祭獻不可在絲綢或染色布料上舉行,唯獨可在出於地土所產的麻布上舉行,正如我們的主耶穌基督被裹在潔淨的細麻布裹屍布中安葬一樣:彌撒也當如此舉行。他規定,若有人渴望在教會中服事或晉升,他當作誦經士三十年、作驅魔士三十天、作輔祭五年、作副執事五年、作殉道者守護人五年、作執事七年、作長老三年,在各方面都經過考驗,甚至連在外之人也當為他作美好的見證,他須是一個妻子的丈夫,他的妻子須由祭司祝福過,如此才得進入主教的品級;
He decreed that the sacrifice of the altar should not be celebrated on silk nor on dyed cloth, but only on linen produced from the earth, just as the body of our Lord Jesus Christ was buried in a clean linen shroud: so should the Masses be celebrated. He decreed that if anyone desired to serve in the church or to advance, he should be a lector for thirty years, an exorcist for thirty days, an acolyte for five years, a subdeacon for five years, a guardian of the martyrs for five years, a deacon for seven years, a presbyter for three, proven in every respect, and that even from those who are outside he should have good testimony, being the husband of one wife, his wife blessed by a priest, and thus advance to the order of the episcopate;
