1:1
QUIDAM e fratribus interrogavit Abbatem Macarium magnum, exquirens qu nam esset, et in quo sita perfectio? Respondens senex dixit: Nisi acquisierit homo humilitatem magnam, quam non solum corde teneat, sed et corpore pr ferat; in nulla re se ipsum stimans, sed potius modico sui sensu deprimens infra omnem creaturam; non judicando unquam omnino quemquam nisi se solum; sufferendo contumeliam, ejiciendo ex corde suo omnem malitiam: vim sibi faciendo ad hoc, ut sit longanimis, benignus, fratrum amator, sobrius, pudicus, continens. Scriptum est enim: "Vim sibi facientium est regnum coelorum." Recte utendo oculis, ad videndum ea tantum qu juvant animan, invigilando custodi lingu ;
弟兄中有一人請問大馬卡里烏斯院長(Abba Macarius the Great),探問何為成全、成全在於何處。老人回答說:人若不獲得極大的謙卑——不僅存於心中,更彰顯於身體;在一切事上看自己算不得甚麼,反倒以卑微的自我看法把自己降到一切受造之物之下;除了惟獨審判自己以外,從不審判任何人;忍受凌辱,從心中除去一切惡毒;強逼自己以致能恆久忍耐、仁慈、愛弟兄、謹守、貞潔、節制。因為經上記著:「天國是強逼自己的人的。」正當地使用眼目,只看那有益於魂的事;又警醒看守舌頭;
A certain one of the brethren questioned Abba Macarius the Great, asking what perfection might be, and wherein it consisted. The old man answered and said: Unless a man acquire great humility — which he holds not only in his heart but also displays in his body, esteeming himself in nothing, but rather abasing himself in lowly thought of himself beneath every creature; never judging anyone at all save only himself; bearing insult, casting out from his heart all malice; doing violence to himself unto this end, that he may be long-suffering, kind, a lover of the brethren, sober, chaste, continent. For it is written: 'The kingdom of heaven is for those who do violence to themselves.' Using the eyes rightly, to look upon only those things that help the soul; keeping watch over the tongue;

and turning the ears away from all vain and harmful hearing; keeping the hands from working anything save what is just; preserving the heart pure before God and the body undefiled; having daily before one's eyes the remembrance of death; renouncing within, in the spirit, anger and malice, and outwardly the matter and the things of sense, kinsmen too according to the flesh, and likewise pleasures; renouncing also the devil and all his works; praying unceasingly toward these things, and at every time, place, business, and work, standing before God, perceiving and venerating Him as present. Unless a man, I say, do all these things, he cannot be perfect. A certain brother questioning the old man said:
1:3
Reposuit seni: Quid igitur facere me jubes, pater?
Abba, how does it happen that, although I in my cell do all that is fitting, yet I find no consolation from God? The old man said to him: This befalls you because you indulge in idle, vain conversations with the slothful; and because you altogether wish to obtain by your own will whatever you desire. He replied to the old man: What then do you bid me do, father? The old man answered: Go, enter into familiarity with a man who fears God, and humble yourself before him, and renounce your own will; and then you shall find consolation from God. The old man said: He who enters a perfumer's shop and walks about in the spice-market, even if he buy or touch nothing of the aromatics, nevertheless wholly and for the time enjoys the fragrance, and himself smells sweet for a while:
1:4
Dixit senex:
so he who associates with the fathers draws from them, by a salutary contagion, that which may help him: for if indeed he wish to act rightly, he sees the way of humiliation shown him by them for this end; and their examples and words are to him like a wall to ward off the assaults of demons. The old man said: If infirmity of body seize you, be not troubled, giving yourself over to idle sorrow. For if your Lord wish to afflict you with bodily sickness, who are you, that you should dare to be angry or take it ill? Does He not Himself care for you in all things? Or can you even live without Him? Bear it then patiently, and pray Him to grant you what He knows to be expedient. For this is His will. Sit with long-suffering, and eat charity. The old man said:
1:5
If a man bring forth a keen nature for striving lawfully, God requires of him that he cling not with excessive affection to bodily matter in anyone, not even to the smallest needle; for if he love anything of the sort too devotedly, his mind will be hindered from the senses and desires worthy of God, possessed by the vehemence of a longing that broods over it; and he will conceive the grief which, from the loss of the things he loved — frequently and inevitably occurring — he will take on. The old man said: Prayer, and sober and attentive senses, together with affliction of the body, offered perseveringly to God with the more abundant diligence, instruct a man to have power over the passions. The old man was asked: What is it for a man to live as a guest and a stranger? Say to yourself, he said: Be silent, and I have no business here.
1:6
Repeat this and do it in every place and work; then you will truly be in the state of a sojourner and a stranger. The old man said: A holy life without learning accomplishes more good than learning without a holy life. For the holy man, though unlearned or silent, profits those who see him; the learned man without sanctity, even merely thinking, disturbs. But if sound doctrine and a holy life run together into one, they make complete the true and full likeness of the whole philosopher. The old man said: Do not aspire to, nor gladly accept, becoming the head of a congregation of brethren, lest perhaps you lay upon your neck the burdens of others' sins. The same old man said: To do violence to oneself in praying, and to bear dryness long with patience, begets the praying with joy and with quiet.
1:7
Vim sibi facere ad robur boni propositi pertinet: orare autem cum quiete munus est grati . [I] NARRAVIT de se ipso Abbas Macarius ad hunc modum: Quando eram juvenis, et in cella residebam in Aegypto, apprehenderunt me ac fecerunt clericum in vico; sed nolens acquiescere, fugi ad alium locum. Venit ad me s cularis vir pius, qui accipiebat quod manibus operabar, et ministrabat mihi. Contigit autem per tentationem, ut qu dam virgo vi prolapsa sit in stuprum. Ea cum uterum gereret, interrogabatur, quis esset auctor criminis? Respondit itaque Anachoretam esse. Unde egressi comprehenderunt me adduxeruntque ad vicum;
To do violence to oneself pertains to the strength of a good resolve; but to pray with quiet is the gift of grace. [I] Abba Macarius related concerning himself in this manner: When I was young and was residing in a cell in Egypt, they laid hold of me and made me a cleric in a village; but, unwilling to consent, I fled to another place. There came to me a devout secular man, who used to take what I worked with my hands and minister to me. But it happened, through temptation, that a certain maiden was forced and fell into defilement. When she became pregnant, she was questioned, who was the author of the crime? She answered, therefore, that it was the Anchorite. Whereupon they came out, seized me, and led me to the village;
1:8
atque appenderunt collo fuligine infectas ollas cum ansis vasorum, sicque circumduxerunt me in vico per compita, verberantes ac dicentes: Iste monachus vitiavit nostram virginem; capite eum, capite. Et percusserunt me pene ad mortem. Accedens vero aliquis senum, dixit: Quousque c ditis monachum istum peregrinum?
and they hung about my neck pots blackened with soot, together with the handles of vessels, and so led me around in the village through the crossroads, beating me and saying: This monk has violated our maiden; seize him, seize him! And they struck me almost to death. But a certain one of the elders, approaching, said: How long will you beat this stranger monk? But he who ministered to me followed behind me, overspread with shame; for they had heaped many insults upon him, saying: Behold the Anchorite to whom you bore witness — what has he done? To this the maiden's parents said: We will not let him go until he has given a surety that he will provide for her. So I signified to that minister of mine, and he pledged on my behalf.
1:9
Postea profectus ad cellam meam, dedi ei, quas habui, sportulas, dicens: Vende et affer cibum uxori me . Tum apud me: Macari, ecce tibi invenisti uxorem; oportet, ut paulo amplius labores, quo nutrias eam. Et operabar nocte dieque, mittebamque ei. Porro cum advenit tempus miser , ut pareret, ad multos dies in cruciatibus permansit, nec pariebat. Percontantur, quid hoc esset? Illa respondit: Ego scio, quoniam Anachoretam calumniata sum, prolatoque mendacio accusavi; neque enim in culpa est, sed ille juvenis. Tunc qui ministrabat mihi, l tus adveniens nuntiavit: Virgo illa non potuit parere, donec ita confiteretur: Extra culpam est Anachoreta;
Afterward, having set out for my cell, I gave him the baskets I had, saying: Sell them and bring food to my wife. Then I said within myself: Macarius, behold, you have found yourself a wife; it is necessary that you labor a little more, that you may nourish her. And I worked night and day, and sent to her. But when the time of the wretched woman came, that she should give birth, she remained in torments for many days and did not give birth. They inquired, what this was? She answered: I know it, for I slandered the Anchorite and accused him with a fabricated lie; for he is not in fault, but that youth. Then he who ministered to me, coming joyful, announced: That maiden could not give birth until she thus confessed: The Anchorite is free from fault;
1:10
His ego auditis, ne mihi molestiam parerent homines, surrexi, atque huc in Scetim fugi. Inde principium causamque habet meus hic adventus. [II] Venit aliquando Macarius Aegyptius a Sceti ad montem Nitri in oblatione Abbatis Pambo, et dicunt ei senes: Sermonem profer fratribus, pater. Tum ille infit, ego nondum evasi in monachum, sed monachos vidi. Mihi namque aliquando sedenti in cella apud Scetim molest erant cogitationes proficiscere in solitudinem, et vide quid illic oculis tuis occurret.
but I lied against him, and behold, the whole village wishes to come here with honor, to ask pardon of you as a suppliant. When I heard these things, lest the people should cause me trouble, I arose and fled hither into Scetis. Hence has my coming here its beginning and its cause. [II] Macarius the Egyptian once came from Scetis to the mountain of Nitria, at an offering of Abba Pambo, and the elders say to him: Bring forth a word for the brethren, father. Then he begins: I have not yet turned out a monk, but I have seen monks. For once, when I was sitting in my cell at Scetis, troublesome thoughts were upon me: Go forth into the wilderness, and see what shall there meet your eyes.
1:11
Perstiti autem quinque annis, pugnans adversus cogitationem, ne forte inquiens a d monibus sit. Utque perseveravit cogitatio, abii in eremum.
And I persisted for five years, fighting against the thought, lest perchance it were from the demons. And as the thought persevered, I went off into the desert. There I found a pool with an island in the midst of it, and to it came the beasts of the desert to drink. Among them I beheld two naked men, and my body trembled; for I supposed them to be spirits. But they, after they saw me trembling, spoke thus: Fear not, we too are men. I said to them: Whence are you, and how came you into this solitude? They answered: We are from a monastery, and by mutual consent we went out and came hither; behold, forty years have now passed. One of us is an Egyptian, the other a Libyan.
1:12
Ipsi quoque interrogaverunt me, his verbis: Quomodo se habet mundus? Venit-ne aqua in tempore suo? Mundus obtinet-ne abundantiam solitam? Respondi: Etiam. Vicissim ego percontatus sum: Quanam ratione fieri potero monachus?
They too questioned me, in these words: How does the world fare? Does the water come in its season? Does the world enjoy its accustomed abundance? I answered: Yes. In turn I inquired: By what means can I become a monk? They say to me: Unless a man renounce all the things of the world, he cannot become a monk. I objected: I am weak, and cannot do as you do. They too objected: If you cannot do as we, sit in your cell and weep for your sins. I asked of them, when it is winter, are you not cold? When it is heat, is your body not burned? They gave answer: God has used this dispensation toward us; neither do we freeze in winter, nor in summer does the heat harm us.
1:13
Propterea dixi vobis me nondum in monachum evasisse, sed vidisse monachos. Ignoscite mihi, fratres. [III] Abbas Macarius cum in paneremo, seu omnimoda solitudine habitaret: solus autem illic anachoreticam vitam ducebat, infra vero alia erat eremus, in qua plures fratres degebant. Eo, inquam, loci aliquando per viam circumspiciens senex, vidit Satanam venientem in figura hominis, ut per locum, in quo erat, transiret: apparebat autem quasi tunicam gestans lineam perforatam, a cujus foraminibus pendebant parvi lecythi. Dicit ei magnus senex: Quo vadis? Respondit: Proficiscor ad fratres, ut eis suggeram. Tum senex: Et quare tibi ampull h ? Ille: Affero fratribus condimenta. Senex: Et h c omnia?
Therefore I told you that I have not yet turned out a monk, but have seen monks. Forgive me, brethren. [III] When Abba Macarius dwelt in the utmost desert, that is, in solitude of every kind — and there alone he led the anchoretic life; but lower down there was another wilderness, in which more brethren dwelt. In that place, I say, the old man once, looking about along the way, saw Satan coming in the figure of a man, that he might pass through the place where he was; and he appeared as if wearing a perforated linen tunic, from whose holes hung little flasks. The great old man says to him: Where are you going? He answered: I am setting out to the brethren, to make suggestions to them. Then the old man: And why these flasks for you? He: I am bringing condiments to the brethren. The old man: And all these?
1:14
Atque his dictis abiit. At senex remansit, observans vias, donec reverteretur. Utque conspexit illum, ait: Salvus sis. Ille respondit: Quomodo contingere mihi poterit, ut salvus sim? Senex? Quare, Ille: Quia cuncti mihi fuerunt immites, nec ullus sustinuit me.
He answered: Yes; if one does not please someone, I offer another; if not this either, I give another; but at any rate, out of these, at least one will please him. And having said this, he went off. But the old man remained, watching the ways until he should return. And when he caught sight of him, he said: Be safe! He answered: How can it come to me that I should be safe? The old man: Why? He: Because all were harsh to me, and none endured me. The old man to him: No friend, then, for you there? Satan to the old man: Not one friend have I there who would even himself obey me; and when he sees me, he turns like a north wind. Then the old man: How is that brother called? Satan to this: Theopemptus. And having said this, he departed.
1:15
Itaque surgens abbas Macarius perrexit ad inferiorem eremum. Eaque re comperta fratres, sumentes ramos palmarum, ei obviam prodierunt. C terum unusquisque eorum pr parabat se, putans, quod apud ipsum diversaturus esset senex. At ille requisivit, quisnam esset in monte, qui Theopemptus appellaretur. Quo invento, intravit in cellam ejus. Theopemptus autem suscepit eum l tus. Utque coepit solum secum habere, senex: Quomodo, inquit, se res tu habent, frater? Is dicit: Recte, per preces tuas. Et senex: Num impugnant te cogitationes? Ille: Interim mihi bene est. Pudebat enim eum edicere. Ait illi senex: Ecce a quot annis vitam asceticam duco, et honore afficior ab omnibus;
於是馬卡里烏斯院長起身往那較低的曠野去。這事一被知道,弟兄們便拿著棕樹枝出來迎接他。並且他們各人都豫備自己,以為老人要住在自己那裡。但他卻查問山上那名叫提奧彭普圖斯的是誰。找到之後,他就進了他的小室。提奧彭普圖斯歡歡喜喜地接待他。當他開始單獨與他在一起時,老人說:弟兄,你的光景如何?他說:靠你的禱告,一切都好。老人又問:難道沒有思念攻擊你麼?他說:目前我還好。因為他羞於說出來。老人對他說:看哪,我過修苦生活如今已有多少年,又受眾人尊敬;
And so, rising up, Abba Macarius proceeded to the lower wilderness. And when this was learned, the brethren, taking palm branches, came out to meet him. Moreover, each one of them prepared himself, supposing that the old man would lodge with him. But he sought out who it was on the mountain that was called Theopemptus. And having found him, he entered his cell. Theopemptus received him gladly. And when he began to be alone with him, the old man said: How do your affairs stand, brother? He says: Rightly, through your prayers. And the old man: Do thoughts not assail you? He: For the moment it is well with me. For he was ashamed to declare it. The old man said to him: Behold, for how many years now I lead the ascetic life, and am honored by all;
1:16
attamen me senem Spiritus fornicationis divexat. Theopemptus excepit: Crede, Abba, me etiam.
yet me, an old man, the spirit of fornication harasses. Theopemptus replied: Believe me, Abba, me too. But the old man pretended that he was assailed by other thoughts as well, until he should bring him to confession. Afterward he says to him: How do you fast? He answered: Until the ninth hour. Then the old man: Fast until evening, exercise yourself, meditate, and recite from memory out of the Gospel and the other Scriptures; and when a thought comes upon you, never look downward, but always upward; and at once the Lord will furnish you aid. And after the old man had instructed the brother, he returned to his own solitude. There, watching again, he sees that demon, and says to him: Where are you going again? To the brethren, he says, having stirred them up. And he went off.
1:17
Ut vero rursus transiit, sciscitatus illum senex, quomodo haberent fratres? Respondit: Male. Et senex: Cur? D mon: Cuncti feroces sunt; quodque pejus est, ille, quem habebam amicum, et obsequentem mihi, ipse etiam, unde nescio, reversus est, nec amplius a me persuadetur, sed cunctis ferocior evasit: unde juravi me amplius ea loca non calcaturum, nisi post tempus. Quo pronuntiato, discessit, senem relinquens. Tunc sanctus intravit in cellam suam. [IV] Venit Abbas Macarius magnus ad Abbatem Antonium in montem; cumque pulsasset ostium, egressus est, petiitque: Tu quis es? Ille autem: Ego, inquit, sum Macarius. Et ostio clauso, intravit, relinquens eum.
But when he passed by again, the old man asked him how the brethren fared. He answered: Badly. And the old man: Why? The demon: All are fierce; and what is worse, he whom I had as a friend and obedient to me, even he himself — whence I know not — has turned back, and is no longer persuaded by me, but has become fiercer than all: wherefore I have sworn that I will tread those places no more, except after a time. Having pronounced this, he departed, leaving the old man. Then the holy man entered his cell. [IV] Abba Macarius the Great came to Abba Antony on the mountain; and when he had knocked at the door, Antony came out and asked: Who are you? But he said: I am Macarius. And, having shut the door, he went in, leaving him.
1:18
But after he recognized his patience, he opened. And dealing courteously with him, he said: For a long time I had been desiring to see you, having heard your fame. And he hospitably received and refreshed him, for he was wearied from much labor. But when evening came, Abba Antony soaked palm branches for himself. Abba Macarius says to him: Bid me too soak some for myself. He: Soak them, he says. And having made up a great bundle, he wove it. So, sitting from evening on, conversing about the salvation of souls, they plaited; and the plaited work descended through the window into the cave. And Antony, entering in the morning, beheld the abundance of Abba Macarius's plaiting, and exclaims: Much virtue goes forth from these hands. [V] Abba Macarius foretold to the brethren concerning the desolation of Scetis:
1:19
Illa vero: Non possum, inquit, pedibus incedere.
When you shall see a cell built beside the marsh, know that the desolation of Scetis is near; when you shall see the trees, it is at the doors; but when you shall behold the boys, take up your sheepskins and depart. [VI] He said again, wishing to console the brethren: There came hither a boy with his mother, who was vexed by a demon, and he said to his mother: Arise, old woman, let us go from here. But she: I cannot, she says, walk on foot. Then the boy to her: I will carry you. And I marveled at the demon's wickedness, how he wished to drive them hence. [VII] Abba Sisoes related: When I was in Scetis with Macarius, we went up — seven persons, that is, men — to reap with him:
1:20
and behold, a certain widow behind us was gathering ears of grain, and did not cease from weeping. The old man therefore called the lord of the estate and said to him: What ails this old woman, that she always weeps? He answered: Because, while her husband was keeping someone's deposit, he died suddenly, and did not declare where he had placed it; and the owner of the deposit wishes to claim her and her children for himself as slaves. The old man replied: Tell her to come to us, where we rest from the heat. And when the woman had come, the old man said to her: Why do you weep so continually? She answered: My husband, having received a deposit, departed this life, and dying did not signify where he had placed it. Then the old man to her: Come, show me where you buried him. And so, taking the brethren with him, he went out with her.
1:21
Et postquam precati fuissent, vocavit senex mortuum his verbis: Ille, ubi posuisti alienum depositum?
When they had reached the place, the old man said to the woman: Withdraw to your house. And after they had prayed, the old man called the dead man with these words: So-and-so, where did you put the deposit that belonged to another? The man gave answer: It is hidden in my house, under the foot of the bed. The old man to him: Sleep again until the day of resurrection. The brethren, seeing this, for fear fell at his feet. Then the old man to them: It happened not on my account, for I am nothing; but on account of the widow and the orphans God did the thing; and this indeed is great, that God wills the soul to be without sin, and whatever it shall ask, it shall receive. Having set out, then, he announced to the widow where the deposit lay.
1:22
Qu accipiens dedit domino, ac in libertatem asseruit liberos, omnesque qui miraculum audiverunt, gloriam dederunt Deo. [VIII] Narravit Abbas Petrus de beato Macario, quod cum advenisset aliquando ad quemdam anachoretam, et invenisset eum grotantem, sciscitatus sit, quidnam cibi vellet sumere: nihil quippe erat in cella ejus. Qui postquam dixisset, pastillum, non piguit virum fortem Alexandriam proficisci, ut gro daret: miraque res nemini manifesta facta est. [IX] Iterum memoravit; Ad Abbatem Macarium cum fratribus cunctis in simplicitate conversantem dixerunt nonnulli? Quare te talem pr bes? Ille respondit: Duodecim annos servivi Domino meo, ut mihi hanc gratiam largiretur;
她領了那物,交給主人,又使她的兒女得自由;凡聽見這神蹟的,都將榮耀歸與神。〔八〕彼得院長講述蒙福的馬卡里烏斯的事說:有一次他來到某隱修士那裡,發現他病了,便問他想吃甚麼食物:因他小室中一無所有。那人說了「一塊小餅」之後,這剛強之人不憚親自啟程往亞歷山大去拿給這病人:而這奇妙的事卻無人知曉。〔九〕他又敘述說:有人對那以單純與眾弟兄交往的馬卡里烏斯院長說:你為何顯出自己是這樣的人?他回答:我服事我主十二年,求祂賜給我這恩典;
She, receiving it, gave it to the owner, and asserted her children into freedom; and all who heard of the miracle gave glory to God. [VIII] Abba Peter related concerning blessed Macarius, that when he had once come to a certain anchorite and found him sick, he inquired what food he might wish to take: for there was nothing in his cell. And after he had said 'a little cake,' the brave man did not shrink from setting out for Alexandria to give to the sick man: and the wondrous thing was made manifest to no one. [IX] He recounted again: To Abba Macarius, conversing with all the brethren in simplicity, certain ones said: Why do you show yourself such a one? He answered: Twelve years I served my Lord, that He might bestow on me this grace;
1:23
At discipulus ejus, cui res nota erat, dicebat fratribus: Per Dominum, ne pr beatis illi; alioqui in cella confecturus est se. Quo comperto fratres, non amplius ei porrigebant. [XI] Proficiscens aliquando Abbas Macarius a palude in cellam suam, portabat palmarum ramos; et ecce occurrit ei in via diabolus falcem gerens.
and do you all give me counsel that I should lay it aside? [X] They said concerning Abba Macarius, that if he should be at leisure among the brethren, he resolved thus with himself: If wine be present, drink it for the brethren's sake; and for one cup of wine, go without water for one day. So the brethren, wishing to refresh him, would give it to him. But the old man received it with joy, that he might torment himself. Yet his disciple, to whom the matter was known, would say to the brethren: By the Lord, do not give it to him; otherwise he will finish himself off in his cell. When the brethren learned this, they no longer offered it to him. [XI] Abba Macarius, setting out once from the marsh to his cell, was carrying palm branches; and behold, the devil met him on the way, bearing a sickle.
1:24
Utque voluit eum ferire, non valuit. Itaque ait ei: Multa a te vis, Macari, quod adversus te nihil valeo. Unum solum est in quo vincis me. Interrogavit Abbas Macarius: Quodnam est illud? Respondit: Humilitas tua.
And though the demon wished to strike him, he could not. So he said to him: 'You ask much of me, Macarius, for I can do nothing against you. For behold, whatever you do, I do also. You abstain from food, and so do I; you keep vigil, and I never sleep at all. There is only one thing in which you surpass me.' Abba Macarius asked: 'What is that?' He answered: 'Your humility. And for that reason I can do nothing against you.' [XII] Some of the fathers asked Abba Macarius the Egyptian, saying: 'How does it come about that, whether you eat or whether you fast, your body is equally lean?' And the old man answered them: 'The wood that turns the brushwood which is burned is wholly consumed by the fire. In like manner, if a man cleanses his mind in the fear of God, the fear of God itself consumes his body.'
1:25
[XIII] Once Abba Macarius set out from Scetis to Terenuthis, and he entered a temple to sleep. Now there were there some ancient corpses of the heathen; and taking one of them he placed it under his head, as a pillow. The demons therefore, seeing his boldness, were moved by envy; and wishing to terrify him, they called out as if to a woman by name, saying: 'Lady, come with us to the bath.' But another demon answered from beneath him, as if from among the dead, thus: 'I have a stranger upon me, and I cannot come.' Yet the old man was not frightened, but boldly struck the body, saying: 'Get up and go into the darkness, if you can.' Hearing this, the demons cried out with a loud voice: 'You have conquered us.' Then, covered with shame, they fled away.
1:26
Respondit: Pater meus hic me projecit, et abiit.
[XIV] They used to say of Abba Macarius the Egyptian that, as he was going up from Scetis carrying baskets, he grew weary and sat down, and prayed in this manner: 'O God, you know that no strength remains in me.' And immediately he was carried to beside the river. [XV] A certain man in Egypt had a paralytic son, and he brought him to the cell of Abba Macarius; but leaving him weeping at the door, he withdrew far off. So the old man, looking down, saw the boy and asked him: 'Who brought you here?' He answered: 'My father threw me down here and went away.' The old man said to him: 'Rise and follow him.' And immediately, having recovered his health, he rose and overtook his father; and thus they returned to their home.
1:27
[XVI] Abbas Macarius magnus dicebat fratribus in Sceti, postquam Ecclesiam dimisisset: Fugite, fratres. Ait illi seniorum quidam; Quonam fugere poterimus ultra solitudinem hanc? Ipse vero digitum suum ad os ponebat, dicens: Fugite hoc. Tum ingrediebatur in cellam suam, et clauso ostio sedebat. [XVII] Dixit idem Abbas Macarius: Si quempiam increpando, ad iram commoveris, affectui tuo satisfacis. Non enim, ut alios salves, perdes te ipsum. [XVIII] Idem Abbas Macarius, dum esset in Aegypto, invenit hominem habentem jumentum, et pr dantem qu ad usum suum possidebat: ipse vero tanquam peregrinus astans furi, una onerabat jumentum, magnaque cum quiete deduxit eum, dicens;
[XVI] The great Abba Macarius used to say to the brethren in Scetis, after he had dismissed the assembly: 'Flee, brethren.' One of the elders said to him: 'Where can we flee beyond this wilderness?' But he would put his finger to his mouth, saying: 'Flee this.' Then he would enter his cell, and, having shut the door, would sit down. [XVII] The same Abba Macarius said: 'If, in rebuking someone, you are stirred to anger, you are gratifying your own passion. For you should not destroy yourself in order to save others.' [XVIII] The same Abba Macarius, while he was in Egypt, found a man with a beast of burden who was plundering the goods he possessed for his own use; and he himself, standing by the thief as though a stranger, helped him load the beast, and with great calm led it away for him, saying:
1:28
Benedictus Dominus in omnibus." [XIX] Interrogaverunt quidam Abbatem Macarium dicentes: Quomodo debemus orare?
"We brought nothing into the world; it is beyond doubt that we can take nothing out of it either. The Lord gave; as he himself willed, so also it was done. Blessed be the Lord in all things." [XIX] Some asked Abba Macarius, saying: 'How ought we to pray?' That old man answered: 'There is no need to speak much, but the hands are to be stretched out, and one should say: Lord, as you will and as you know, have mercy. And if the assault of temptation should press in, one ought to say: Lord, help. He himself knows what is profitable, and he deals mercifully with us.' [XX] Abba Macarius said: 'If contempt becomes for you as praise, poverty as riches, and want as abundance, you shall not die.'
1:29
For it cannot happen that one who believes rightly and acts in godliness should fall into the filth of vices and the error of demons. [XXI] They related: Two brothers in Scetis transgressed, and Abba Macarius of the City separated, that is, excommunicated them; and certain men came and reported this to the great Abba Macarius the Egyptian. He declared that it was not the brothers who had been separated, but Macarius — for he loved him. Abba Macarius learned by report that he had been excommunicated by the elder, and he fled to the marsh. So the great Abba Macarius went out and found him pierced by gnats; and he said to him: 'You separated the brothers, and they are about to withdraw to the village. But I have separated you; and you, like a beautiful maiden, have fled here into an inner chamber.'
1:30
At ego, vocatis fratribus, ab ipsis didici nihil horum factum esse. Vide igitur tu, frater, ne a d monibus illusus fueris. Nam nihil vidisti. Sed veniam incurvatus pete pro delicto tuo. Ille autem dixit: Si vis, da mihi poenitentiam. Videns ergo senex humilitatem illius, ait: Vade, jejuna tres hebdomadas, semel singulis hebdomadis comedens. H c scilicet erat illius perpetua operatio, hebdomadas jejunare.
「但我召了那兩個弟兄來,從他們得知這些事一件也沒有發生過。弟兄啊,你要謹慎,免得你被鬼魔欺騙了。因為你甚麼也沒看見。倒不如俯伏下來,為你的過失求赦免。」他卻說:「你若願意,就給我定一個補贖吧。」於是老人見他謙卑,便說:「去吧,禁食三週,每週只吃一次。」這實在成了那人終生的操練,就是按週禁食。〔二十二〕在斯刻提斯,摩西長老對馬加流長老說:「我願在安靜與沉默中度日,弟兄們卻不容我。」馬加流長老對他說:「我看你性情太過柔軟,不能叫弟兄離開你;
'But I, having called the brothers, learned from them that none of these things had been done. See then, brother, lest you have been deceived by demons. For you saw nothing. Rather, bow down and ask pardon for your fault.' But he said: 'If you will, give me a penance.' So the old man, seeing his humility, said: 'Go, fast three weeks, eating once each week.' This indeed was that man's perpetual practice, to fast for weeks. [XXII] Abba Moses said to Abba Macarius in Scetis: 'I wish to live in quiet and silence, but the brothers will not let me.' Abba Macarius said to him: 'I see that you are of too soft a disposition, and unable to turn a brother away from you;
1:31
Tum senex inquit: Iterum proficiscere cras, laudibus eos effer. Pergens itaque frater, collaudavit eos, vocans: Apostoli, sancti, justi. Tum adiit senem dixitque: Laudavi. Ille ei: Nihil tibi responderunt? Frater: Nullo modo. Tunc senex infit:
but if you desire a quiet life, set out for the desert, go into the rock, and there you will live in quiet.' And he did this, and found rest. [XXIII] A brother came to Abba Macarius the Egyptian and said to him: 'Abba, speak to me a word, by what means I may be saved.' The old man said: 'Go to the tomb and assail the dead with curses.' So the brother went and attacked them with insults and stones, and returning he reported to the elder. He asked him: 'Did they answer you nothing?' The brother: 'Nothing.' Then the old man said: 'Go again tomorrow, and extol them with praises.' So the brother went on, and praised them, calling out: 'Apostles, saints, righteous ones.' Then he came to the elder and said: 'I praised them.' He said to him: 'Did they answer you nothing?' The brother: 'In no way.' Then the old man said:
1:32
'You know with how many insults you assailed them, and they answered you nothing; and with how many praises you adorned them, and they spoke nothing to you. So too you, if you desire to attain salvation, must become dead; reckon neither the injuries of men nor their praises, but like the dead — thus you will be able to be saved.' [XXIV] Once, as Abba Macarius was passing through Egypt together with the brethren, he heard a boy speaking thus to his mother: 'Mother, a certain rich man loves me, and I hate him; but a poor man hates me, and yet I love him.' Hearing these words, Abba Macarius marveled. The brethren said to him: 'What word is this, father, that you are seized with wonder?' The old man answered them:
1:33
'Truly our Lord is rich and loves us, yet we will not obey him; but our enemy the devil is poor, and pursues us with hatred, and yet we love his impurity.' [XXV] Abba Poemen entreated him with many tears, saying: 'Speak to me a word, how I may attain salvation.' But the old man answered him: 'The thing you ask has now departed from the monks.' [XXVI] Once Abba Macarius visited Abba Antony, and having held discourse with him, he returned to Scetis. The fathers came out to meet him. And in conversation the old man said to them: 'I told Abba Antony that in our place we lack the offering [of the Eucharist].'
1:34
The fathers began to discourse of other matters, and they did not seek to learn the answer from the old man, nor did the old man speak to them. So one of the fathers used to declare this: 'When the fathers see that it has slipped from the brothers' memory to inquire about a matter useful to them, they impose upon themselves the necessity of taking the initiative in speech; but if they are not pressed by the brothers, they do not pursue the discourse — lest they be caught speaking when neither asked nor questioned, and the talk seem to be idle.' [XXVII] In this manner Abba Esaias questioned Abba Macarius: 'Speak me a saying.' And the old man said to him: 'Flee men.' Again Abba Esaias: 'What is it to flee men?' But the old man: 'To sit in your cell and weep over your sins.'
1:35
[XXVIII] Hoc referebat Abbas Paphnutius discipulus Abbas Macarii: Rogavi patrem meum, ut aliquid mihi diceret. Illius autem oratio fuit: Neminem l seris, neminem condemnaveris. H c observa et salvus fies. [XXIX] Dixit Abbas Macarius: Noli dormire in cella fratris, qui malam famam habet. [XXX] Accesserunt aliquando fratres ad Abbatem Macarium Sceti agentem, nec quidquam invenerunt in cella ejus, nisi aquam putridam. Dicunt ei: Abba, ascende in pagum, reficiemus te. Excepit senex: Nostis, fratres, illius talis hominis pistrinum in pago? Respondent: Etiam. Tum senex: Ego quoque novi. Scitis et pr dium illius, ubi fluvius salit? Aiunt; Scimus. Ego quoque scio, inquit senex.
[XXVIII] Abba Paphnutius, the disciple of Abba Macarius, used to relate this: 'I asked my father to say something to me. And his saying was: Hurt no one, condemn no one. Observe these things and you will be saved.' [XXIX] Abba Macarius said: 'Do not sleep in the cell of a brother who has an evil reputation.' [XXX] Once some brothers came to Abba Macarius while he was living in Scetis, and they found nothing in his cell but stagnant water. They said to him: 'Abba, go up to the village, and we will refresh you.' The old man replied: 'You know, brothers, the bakery of such-and-such a man in the village?' They answered: 'Yes.' Then the old man: 'I know it too. And do you know that man's estate where the river leaps?' They said: 'We know it.' 'I know it too,' said the old man.
1:36
'So then, whenever I please, I have no need of you, but I bring it to myself.' [XXXI] They used to say of Abba Macarius that if a brother approached him with fear, as to a holy and great elder, he said nothing to him. But if one of the brothers, as though making nothing of him, said to him: 'Abba, when you were a camel-driver and used to steal natron and sell it, did not the guards beat you?' — if anyone spoke thus, to this man he would gladly give an answer if he asked anything. [XXXII] Of the great Abba Macarius they affirmed that he was, as it is written, an earthly god. For just as God covers the world, so Abba Macarius covered over offenses; the things he had seen, as though he had not seen them; the things he had heard, as though he had not heard them.
1:37
[XXXIII] Narratio Abbatis Vitimii extitit, quod ita retulerit Abbas Macarius: Sedente me aliquando in Sceti, descenderunt illuc duo juvenes peregrini; quorum unus barbam gerebat, alter vero primam emittebat lanuginem. Hi venerunt ad me rogantes, ubi esset cella Abbatis Macarii? Tum Ego: Quid eum vultis?
[XXXIII] There was a narrative of Abba Bitimius, that Abba Macarius related thus: 'As I was once sitting in Scetis, two young strangers came down there; one of them wore a beard, while the other was just putting forth his first down. These came to me asking where the cell of Abba Macarius was. Then I: What do you want with him? They said: Having heard the fame of him and of Scetis, we have come to see him. I said: I am he. And making a bow of the body, they said: We desire to remain in this place. But seeing them delicate and as if reared in riches, I said: You cannot reside here. Then the elder said: If we cannot remain here, we shall go to another place. I within my own mind: Why do I drive them off, and they will suffer a stumbling block?
1:38
Efficiet labor, ut ipsi sponte fugiant. Itaque dico eis: Venite, construite vobis cellam, si potestis. Illi: Ostende nobis locum, construemus. Porro petierunt a me, quid eo loci operaturi essent. Respondi, plectam facerent: sumptisque e palude foliis palmarum, ostendi ipsis plect seu funis principium, utque consuere oporteret; dixique: Facite sportas, quas tradetis custodibus, ipsi vero afferent nobis panes. Deinde abscessi.
'Labor will bring it about that they flee of their own accord. So I said to them: Come, build yourselves a cell, if you can. They said: Show us the place, and we will build. So the old man gave them an axe and a satchel full of loaves, and salt; and he showed them a hard rock, advising: Cut stones here, and bring yourselves timber from the marsh, and when you have set on a roof, settle down. But I thought, he said, that they would withdraw because of the labor. Moreover they asked me what they should work at in that place. I answered that they should make plaited work; and taking palm-leaves from the marsh, I showed them the beginning of the plait, that is, of the cord, and how it ought to be sewn; and I said: Make baskets, which you will hand over to the guards, and they in turn will bring us loaves. Then I went away.
1:39
「但他們忍耐地遵行了我所吩咐的一切;三年之久也沒有來見我。然而我裏面卻不斷地與自己的魂角力,思想說:他們的操練是甚麼,竟不來詢問自己的意念?住得遠的都來見我;這兩個雖然近,卻沒有來,也沒有到別人那裏去;他們只默默地去教會領受供物。於是我向主禱告,禁食一週,求祂指明他們在作甚麼。過了一週,我就起來,往他們那裏去,要看他們如何度日。我敲門,他們就開了,默默地問我安。我作了禱告,便坐下。年長的向年幼的點頭,叫他出去;
'But they patiently carried out whatever I had commanded; nor did they come to me for three years. Yet I was continually wrestling within my own soul, considering: What is their practice, that they have not come to inquire about their thoughts? Those who dwell far off come to me; and these, though they are near, have not come, nor have they gone to others; they only go to the church, silent, to receive the offering. So I prayed to the Lord, fasting one week, that he might make plain to me what they were doing. And after the week, rising up, I went off to them, to observe how they were faring. And when I had knocked, they opened, and greeted me in silence. I made the prayer and sat down. The elder nodded to the younger to go out;
1:40
Ego vero dixi: Surgite, comedamus. Inde consurgentes cibum sumpsimus. Attulit baucale, ac bibimus. Ut autem advenit vespera, petunt a me: Recedis-ne?
'and he himself sat to make the plaited work, and spoke nothing. But at the ninth hour he made a sound. The younger came, made a little porridge, and at the elder's nod set the table; and when he had placed three small loaves upon it, he stood in silence. Then I said: Rise, let us eat. So rising up, we took food. He brought a flagon, and we drank. And when evening came, they asked me: Are you departing? I answered: No, but I sleep here. So they laid out for me a mat on one side, and for themselves at the other corner on their side; and they took off their belts and girdles, and together they lay down on the mat before me. Now after they had composed themselves, I prayed to God to reveal to me their practice.
1:41
Porro ego cernebam eos; ipsi non videbant me. Ad h c vidi d mones instar muscarum venientes super minorem, quorum alii accedebant, ut sederent in ore ejus, alii in oculis. Simul conspexi Angelum Domini cum gladio ignis pr manibus, circumvallantem eum, d monesque ab eo propellentem. At majori non poterant appropinquare. Circa matutinum vero tempus, recubuerunt: ego assimilavi, me mox expergefactum; ipsique similiter.
'Then the roof was opened, and a light arose, as if by day; but they themselves did not perceive the light. And when they supposed that I was asleep, the elder nudged the side of the younger; they rose, girded themselves, and stretched out their hands to heaven. Now I could see them; but they did not see me. At this I saw demons coming upon the younger like flies, some of whom drew near to sit upon his mouth, others upon his eyes. At the same time I beheld an angel of the Lord with a sword of fire before his hands, surrounding him as a wall and driving the demons from him. But to the elder they could not draw near. Around the time of dawn they lay down again; I pretended to be just then awakened, and they likewise. And this one word only did the elder speak to me:
1:42
Vis recitemus duodecim Psalmos? Excipio: Etiam.
'Shall we recite twelve Psalms? I replied: Yes. Then the younger chanted five Psalms, of six verses each, and one Alleluia; and at each verse a lamp of fire went forth from his mouth and ascended into heaven. In like manner also the elder, when he opened his mouth in chanting, as it were a little cord of fire came forth and reached as far as heaven. I too recited a little from my heart and memory. After which, going out, I said: Pray for me. But they bowed themselves, in silence. So I learned that the elder was perfect, but the younger the enemy still assailed. However, after a few days the elder brother fell asleep in the sleep of death, and then on the third day the younger.

Cumque e patribus nonnulli adirent Abbatem Macarium, ducebat eos in istorum cellam, cum his verbis: Venite, videte martyrium minorum peregrinorum.
'And whenever some of the fathers came to Abba Macarius, he would lead them into the cell of these two, with these words: Come, see the martyrdom of the young strangers.' [XXXIV] Once the elders of the mountain sent to Abba Macarius, who was dwelling in Scetis, entreating him and saying: 'That the whole multitude be not wearied by coming to you, we beg that you come to us, so that we may see you before you depart to the Lord.' When he had arrived at the mountain, the whole multitude gathered around him. And the elders asked that he give an address to the brethren. He, having heard the request, said: 'Let us weep, and let our eyes pour forth tears, before we go to that place where our tears burn up our bodies.'
1:44
Et ploraverunt cuncti, cecideruntque super faciem suam, necnon dixerunt: Pater, ora pro nobis. [XXXV] Alia iterum vice d mon insurrexit adversus Abbatem Macarium cum gladio, volens pedem ejus amputare: sed cum propter humilitatem ipsius non posset, dixit ei: Qu cumque habetis, habemus etiam nos: sola humilitate a nobis differtis et pr valetis. [XXXVI] Dixit Abbas Macarius: Si retinuerimus memoriam malorum, qu nobis inferuntur ab hominibus, abolemus vim recordationis Dei: quod si recordati fuerimus malorum qu per d mones contingunt, erimus invulnerati. [XXXVII] Retulit Abbas Paphnutius, discipulus Abbatis Macarii, verba senis: Quando eram puer, cum aliis pueris pascebam buculas;
他們眾人就哀哭,俯伏於地,說:「父親,請為我們禱告。」〔三十五〕又有一次,一個鬼帶著刀起來攻擊馬加流長老,想要砍斷他的腳;但因他的謙卑,鬼無法下手,就對他說:「凡你所有的,我們也有;你惟獨在謙卑上與我們不同,並且勝過我們。」〔三十六〕馬加流長老說:「我們若存留人加給我們之惡的記憶,就消滅了記念神的能力;但我們若記念藉鬼魔臨到的惡,就必不受傷。」〔三十七〕馬加流長老的門徒帕弗努提長老述說老人的話:「我作孩童時,常與別的孩子一同放牧小牛;
And they all wept and fell upon their faces, and said: 'Father, pray for us.' [XXXV] Yet another time a demon rose up against Abba Macarius with a sword, wishing to cut off his foot; but since, on account of his humility, he could not, he said to him: 'Whatever you have, we too have; in humility alone you differ from us and prevail.' [XXXVI] Abba Macarius said: 'If we retain the memory of the evils inflicted upon us by men, we abolish the power of the remembrance of God; but if we are mindful of the evils that come to us through demons, we shall be unwounded.' [XXXVII] Abba Paphnutius, the disciple of Abba Macarius, reported the words of the old man: 'When I was a boy, I used to pasture the heifers with other boys;

'and they went off to steal figs. And while they were running, one of them fell, which I picked up and ate. So whenever the memory of that deed returns, I sit weeping.' [XXXVIII] Abba Macarius related: 'Once, as I was journeying through the desert, I found the skull of a dead man lying on the ground; and when I moved it with my palm-staff, the skull spoke to me. I said to it: Who are you? The skull answered me: I was a high priest of idols, and of the heathen who dwelt in this place; but you are Macarius, who bear the Spirit of God. At whatever hour you are moved with mercy toward those who are in torments, they feel a little comfort. The old man said: What is the comfort, and what is the torment?'
1:46
'As far,' it said, 'as heaven is distant from the earth, so great is the fire beneath us, while we stand in the midst of the fire from feet to head; nor is it permitted to anyone to see another face to face, but each one's face clings to the back of another. So whenever you pray for us, one in part beholds the face of another. This is the comfort.' And the old man, weeping, said: 'Woe to the day on which man is born!' He added: 'Is there any heavier punishment?' The skull replied: 'A greater penalty is beneath us.' Then the old man: 'And who are those that dwell there?' It answered: 'We, inasmuch as we did not know God, obtain mercy in some small measure; but those who knew God and denied him are beneath us.' Then the old man, taking up the skull, committed it to the earth.

Cumque ille pr iret, obvium habuit quemdam Gr corum seu gentilium sacerdotem. Ad quem clamans frater, vocabat; Heu, heu, inquiens, quo curris, d mon? Ille vero conversus, plagas ei inflixit, reliquitque semimortuum. Ac tollens, quod portabat lignum, cucurrit. Paululum progresso occurrit inter cursum Abbas Macarius, qui dixit ei: Salvus sis, salvus sis labore confecte. Ille admiratus venit ad eum, et ait: Quid boni vidisti in me, quod me salutaveris? Tum senex: Quoniam conspexi te labore fessum, ac nescis te in vanum defatigari.
[XXXIX] It was said of Abba Macarius the Egyptian that once he was going up from Scetis to the mountain of Nitria; and when he was near the place, he said to his disciple: 'Go on ahead a little.' And as he was going ahead, he met a certain priest of the Greeks, that is, of the heathen. Crying out at him, the brother called: 'Hey, hey,' he said, 'where are you running, demon?' But the man, turning, dealt him blows and left him half dead. And taking up the wood he was carrying, he ran on. When he had gone a little way, Abba Macarius met him in mid-course, and said to him: 'Be saved, be saved, you who are worn out with toil.' The man, amazed, came to him and said: 'What good have you seen in me, that you have greeted me?' Then the old man: 'Because I have seen you wearied with toil, and you do not know that you labor in vain.'
1:48
The priest also said: 'I am pricked to the heart by your greeting, and I have known that you are from God. But another, an evil monk, meeting me, treated me with insult; therefore I dealt him blows to the death.' Now the old man recognized that he was speaking of his own disciple. Then, taking hold of his feet, the priest spoke thus: 'I will not let you go, unless you make me a monk.' And they came up to where the monk was, and carried him to the church of the mountain. Moreover, seeing the priest with him, they were astounded; and they made him a monk. And many of the heathen, because of him, became Christians. Abba Macarius therefore asserted that an evil word makes even the good evil, and a good word makes even the evil good.
1:49
[XL] They used to relate of Abba Macarius that, while he was absent, a robber entered his cell. And when he had returned, he found the robber loading his camel with his belongings. He himself therefore, entering the cell, took some of the vessels and helped load the camel along with him. When then they had thrown on the pack, the thief began to beat the camel that it might get up; but it would not rise. So Abba Macarius, seeing that it would not rise, entered the cell and found a small hoe, which he brought out and laid upon the camel, saying: 'Brother, this is what the camel was seeking.' And nudging it with his foot, the old man said: 'Get up.' And immediately it rose, and went a little way on the road because of his word. But again it sat down, and would not rise until they had unloaded all the belongings.
1:50
Tunc enim abiit. [XLI] Abbas Aio interrogavit Abbatem Macarium, sic: Dicito mihi aliquid. Ait ei Abbas Macarius: Fuge homines; sede in cella tua, et defle peccata tua; nec dilexeris loquelam hominum; salusque tibi obtinget.
For then it went away. [XLI] Abba Aio questioned Abba Macarius thus: 'Tell me something.' Abba Macarius said to him: 'Flee men; sit in your cell, and weep over your sins; and do not love the talk of men; and salvation shall be yours.'
