3:1
IIII. ORATIONES. f Tibique, Domine, celsum Cherubim dicatum est, et illa moles quadriformis machinae te sempiterno confitentur carmine. et nos imago consonantis cantici amen sonamus, alleluia dicimus. Te septem primi deprecantur angeli, ceu ciuitatis septem principes uiri, solio propinqui, ianitores proximi. et nos imago consonantis cantici amen sonamus, alleluia dicimus. Te solis astrum cum sorore menstrua, Uergiliae Iugula Uesperugo Lucifer, omnesque guttae praemicantes inuocant. et nos imago consonantis cantici amen sonamus, alleluia dicimus. Aer aquosus siue sudus inuicem, simulque uenti pluuiae grando flumina, ritu suomet conditorem concinunt.
IV. PRAYERS. To you, O Lord, the lofty Cherubim is consecrated, and that fourfold mass of the structure confesses you with everlasting song. And we too, the image of the harmonious canticle, sound 'Amen,' and say 'Alleluia.' The seven first angels beseech you, like seven leading men of a city, near to the throne, the nearest doorkeepers. And we too, the image of the harmonious canticle, sound 'Amen,' and say 'Alleluia.' The star of the sun, with its monthly sister, the Pleiades, Orion, the Evening Star, the Morning Star, and all the gleaming droplets call upon you. And we too, the image of the harmonious canticle, sound 'Amen,' and say 'Alleluia.' The watery or the clear air by turns, and together the winds, rains, hail, rivers, sing of their Maker after their own manner.
3:2
- Infernae sedis flamma, fulua tartara, trucesque praesidentes pariter angeli, amen minaci decantantes carmine. et nos imago consonantis cantici amen sonamus, alleluia dicimus. Postremo dico deprecandi canticum. id facio quantum per uiginti cantica.
And we too, the image of the harmonious canticle, sound 'Amen,' and say 'Alleluia.' The fixed ground with its moving burden, which obeys man, and whatever has been taken from any source, sings to you alone, and falls silent for all others. And we too, the image of the harmonious canticle, sound 'Amen,' and say 'Alleluia.' O Ocean, who confine the girdled land and the trench of the inward gulf in the middle, sounding forth God with the creatures of the sea. And we too, the image of the harmonious canticle, sound 'Amen,' and say 'Alleluia.' The flame of the infernal seat, the tawny Tartarus, and the fierce angels presiding alike, chanting 'Amen' with a menacing song. And we too, the image of the harmonious canticle, sound 'Amen,' and say 'Alleluia.' Lastly, I speak the canticle of supplication. This I do as far as I can through twenty cantos.
3:3
But lest anyone be so bold as to interpolate anything, I rebuke the serpent, the master of falsehood, that he add not nor take away a letter. But if the spiritual reading offends anyone, he shall be free to spurn the reading, not to alter the standard of the reading. I rebuke the serpent, the master of falsehood, that he add not nor take away a letter. If the copyist errs in changing a letter, he errs unknowing; pardon from Christ, if it is at hand. For it is not the will, but truly the right hand that slips. I rebuke the serpent, the master of falsehood, that he add not nor take away a letter. To those men the prohibition pertains who are truly named natural philosophers: if you do not approve, it is free to pass it by. I rebuke the serpent, the master of falsehood, that he add not nor take away a letter.
3:4
et nos a faece (hac) ethnicorum emersimus, eamque tandem rupimus caliginem, dum spiritales exaudimus angelos. anguem ma(gistrum falsitatis increpo, ut non adiciat neue demat litteram.) designo sextum praecauendam spiritu f mortis Dei prophetas instrumenta daemonum t numa et mortis semper in saeculum. deus sancte, te rogamus Patrem Unigeniti, Christe Deus, te precamur uiuum Dei Filium, sancte Christe, te obsecramus iudicem uerum Deum.
And we have emerged from this dregs of the heathen, and have at last broken through that darkness, while we hearken to the spiritual angels. I rebuke the serpent, the master of falsehood, that he add not nor take away a letter. I appoint the sixth to be guarded against by the spirit of death—the prophets of God who are instruments of the demons, and of death forever in the age. Holy God, we ask you, Father of the Only-begotten; Christ God, we beseech you, the living Son of God; holy Christ, we implore you, the true Judge, true God.
