2:1
PRESBVTERI LIBER APOLOGETICVS.
THE PRESBYTER'S BOOK OF DEFENSE. It is not of my ability nor of my presumption, most blessed priests, but of a most pressing and almost extreme necessity—as you yourselves recognize—that I should now appear as I do. To do this, indeed, I have been compelled by an injury, being not only the defender of my own faith but also the discloser of another's perfidy. For just as I ought to be zealous for my own purgation on account of conscience—and I mean conscience not my own but another's—so too I am forced to point out with the finger the wolves caught among the flock of sheep, on account of faith and zeal—and I mean zeal not my own but Christ's. Yet neither do I, being the least of all, presume anything out of rashness: it is a necessity for me to make manifest the injury which I have suffered.
2:2
Let it be plain to all who have done these things. For it is both the will and the ordinance of God that the evil which was being tolerated through patience should of necessity be brought forth, and that—through the contention of their fury, while they themselves receive the fitting reward which their error deserved—there should be made not only a marking of their most wicked dogmas but a disclosure of the persons to be corrected. For the fathers, both those martyrs and confessors who have already gone to rest—Cyprian, Hilary, and Ambrose—and those for whom it is even now necessary to remain still in the flesh, who are the pillars and bulwarks of the Catholic Church—Aurelius Augustine and Jerome—have already published, in writings most approved, many things against this abominable heresy, without designating the names of the heretics.
2:3
And yet this abomination of most venomous dogmas has even now both living dead and dead living. For Origen and Priscillian and Iovinian, long since dead in their own persons, live on in these men, and not only live but even speak; but now Pelagius and Caelestius, if they persevere in these errors as living dead, behold, against the Church—which is a wretched thing—and, what is far more wretched, within the Church, they openly hiss, and as impious serpents, licking with quivering tongues their mouths infected with poison, while they besiege the holy and most fortified see into which they have subtly crept in, they terrify all the faithful, lest we fly together to that once most firm refuge in Zion.
2:4
fetor siquidem oris eorum longe lateque diffusus omnium, quibus odor uitae in uitam erat, odorem uertit in mortem. Contra hunc serpentem suffocantemque halitum multa utique beatissimi quos supra memorauimus uiri et multifaria saueolentia scripturarum unguenta conficiunt et ad reficienda aestuantium corda populorum fragrantissimum thymiama cum oblatione orationis incendunt. sed hoc parum est, incerto propemodum auctore contendere et contraria substituendo contrariis infectum pestifero halitu aerem temperare, nisi ipsi in medium protrahantur proteranturque serpentes.
Indeed the stench of their mouth, diffused far and wide, has turned, for all to whom the odor of life was unto life, that odor into death. Against this serpent and its suffocating breath the most blessed men whom we have mentioned above prepare many and manifold sweet ointments of the Scriptures, and, to restore the burning hearts of the peoples, they kindle a most fragrant incense together with the offering of prayer. But it is too little a thing to contend with an almost uncertain author and, by substituting contraries for contraries, to temper the air infected with a pestilential breath, unless the serpents themselves are dragged forth into the midst and trampled.
2:5
Since they, for the sake of guarding the head alone, expose the rest of the body to wounding and injury, reckoning no loss so long as that part of them is free from peril which holds within itself manifold and venomous tongues, even if all their other members be cut off: does it then seem enough to us to be satisfied with merely tempering the stench, but not to move the serpents themselves from their inner chambers?—as though there were any end to the fetid exhalation except by the author being made an end of. And amid these things does not that testimony of Solomon occur to mind? 'One building up, another tearing down—what shall profit them but their labor?'
2:6
There stands also the most monstrous Goliath, swollen with pride and with carnal power, confident that he can do all things by himself, in head and hand, and moreover clothed over his whole body with abundant bronze, having behind him his armor-bearer, who, though he himself does not fight, nevertheless supplies all the aids of bronze and iron. And it is no wonder if Scripture, fittingly foreseeing this place, declares, where it says, 'The Philistines were standing upon the mountain on this side.' For from the Church the assailant of heresy is expelled, while the heretic is found being nourished in the bosom of the Church; and for this reason, through the Holy Spirit, Israel is there declared to stand, and on the other side the enemy. And this often. For even king David, the godly father, was driven from Jerusalem, having laid aside the kingly garb, even by his impious son:
2:7
whereupon straightway Absalom the tyrant enters in. So Goliath stands—alas the grief!—on this side, that is, within the Church, and not only stands but even provokes, and at the same time, for very many days, reproaches holy Israel with manifest fear. Let no one, I beseech you, most blessed priests, suppose that I, under the pretext of the figure of Goliath, glory in the name of David: you it was who wished me to be a sharer in your contest, that I might come as a helper, not as an author. For I was lying hidden in Bethlehem, an unknown, poor stranger—why do I wretchedly speak thus, perhaps again to be marked for boastfulness? since David himself too was such a one and came forth from there—I was lying hidden, then, in Bethlehem, handed over by my father Augustine that I might learn the fear of the Lord, sitting at the feet of Jerome.
2:8
inde Hierusalem nobis accersientibus uocatus adueni; dehinc in conuentum uestrum una uobiscum Iohanne episcopo praecipiente conscendi. ilioo a pusillitate mea postulastis uniuersi, ut si quid super hac haeresi, quam Pelagius et Caelestius seminarunt, in Africa gestum esse cognoscerem, fideliter ac simpliciter indicarem. exposui coronae uestrae breuiter ut potui, Caelestium iam ad honorem presbyterii subrepentem apud Carthaginem plurimis episcopis iudicantibus proditum auditum conuictum confessum detestatumque ab Ecclesia ex Africa profugisse;
從那裡,當耶路撒冷的人召喚我們時,我便應召前來;又從那裡,照主教約翰的吩咐,與你們一同上到你們的會集。在那裡,你們眾人立刻向我這卑微之人要求:若我知道在非洲就佩拉糾與凱萊斯提烏斯所撒下的這異端有何處置,我當忠實而質樸地稟報。我盡我所能簡略地向你們可敬的會眾陳明:凱萊斯提烏斯在迦太基已潛行謀取長老之尊位,卻在極多主教審斷之下被揭發、被聽訊、被定罪、被招認、被憎惡,並從非洲逃離了教會;
Thence, when those of Jerusalem summoned us, I came, being called; and from there I ascended into your assembly at the bidding of the bishop John together with you. There you all at once asked of my littleness that, if I knew of anything done in Africa concerning this heresy which Pelagius and Caelestius had sown, I should faithfully and simply report it. I set forth to your reverend body, briefly as I could, that Caelestius, already creeping in toward the honor of the presbyterate at Carthage, had—with very many bishops judging—been exposed, heard, convicted, confessed, and abhorred, and had fled from the Church out of Africa;
2:9
that against the book of Pelagius the blessed Augustine, at the urging and request of Pelagius's own disciples, had most fully replied; that there was moreover in my hands a letter of the aforesaid bishop which he had recently directed to Sicily, in which he had refuted many questions of the heretics—which letter you also bade me read there, and I read it. To these things the bishop John asked that Pelagius be brought in to his face. And to him, both out of reverence for his fatherly dignity and for the usefulness of the proceeding, since you believed he would be more rightly refuted by the bishop while present, the indulgence of admitting him was granted. Pelagius being brought in, you all unanimously asked him whether he acknowledged that he had taught those things to which the bishop Augustine had replied.
2:10
ilico ille respondit: cet quis est mihi Augustinus ?\' cumque uniuersi acclamarent, blasphemantem in episcopum, ex cuius ore Dominus uniuersae Africae unitatis indulserit sanitatem, non solum a conuentu illo uerum ab omni ecclesia pellendum, episcopus Iohannes ilico eum, hominem uidelicet laicum in consessu presbyterorum, reum haereseos manifestae in medio catholicorum sedere praecepit et deinde ait: \'Augnstinus ego sum,\' ut scilicet persona quasi praesentis assumpta. liberius ex auctoritate eius qui laedebatur ignosceret et dolentium animos temperaret. cui mox a nobis dictum est: csi Augustini personam sumis, Augustini sequere sententiam\'. tunc idem episcopus nobis omnibus ait:
Straightway he replied: 'And who is Augustine to me?' And when all cried out that the one blaspheming against the bishop—through whose mouth the Lord had granted health of unity to all Africa—was to be expelled not only from that assembly but from the whole Church, the bishop John forthwith ordered him, namely a layman, to sit guilty of manifest heresy in the midst of the Catholics in the session of presbyters, and then said: 'I am Augustine'—so that, having assumed as it were the person of one present, he might the more freely, by the authority of him who was being wronged, pardon and soothe the minds of those who grieved. To him it was at once said by us: 'If you take the person of Augustine, follow the opinion of Augustine.' Then the same bishop said to us all:
2:11
\'haec, quae leguntur, in alios dicta sunt, dicta autem de Pelagio suggerendum putatis; si in ipsum ergo Pelagium quid dicatis, expromite\'. ego autem nobis annuentibus dixi: Telagius mihi dixit docere se, hominem posse esse sine peccato et mandata Dei facile custodire, si uelit\'. respondit Pelagius audientibus nobis: \'hoc et dixisse me et dicere, negare non possum). ego ilico prosecutus sum: \'hoc in Caelestio Africana synodus detestata est; hoc Augustinus episcopus scriptis suis, sicut audistis, exhorruit; hoc in ipsius nunc Pelagii scriptis sua responsione condemnat;
「這些被誦讀的話,原是針對別人說的;但你們認為當提示說它們是論及佩拉糾的;那麼,你們若有什麼話要針對佩拉糾本人,就說出來吧。」於是我,在你們同意之下,說道:「佩拉糾對我說,他教導:人若願意,便能無罪,且能容易地遵守神的誡命。」佩拉糾當著我們的面回答說:「我既說過這話,也仍如此說,我不能否認。」我隨即接著說:「這話正是非洲會議在凱萊斯提烏斯身上所憎惡的;正是奧古斯丁主教在其著作中(如你們所聽見的)所戰慄的;正是他如今在佩拉糾自己的著作中、藉其答覆所定罪的;
'These things which are read were said against others; but you think it should be suggested that they were said of Pelagius; if therefore you have anything to say against Pelagius himself, set it forth.' And I, with you assenting, said: 'Pelagius told me that he teaches that a man can be without sin and can easily keep the commandments of God, if he will.' Pelagius replied, with us hearing: 'That I both said this and say it, I cannot deny.' I straightway continued: 'This the African synod abhorred in Caelestius; this the bishop Augustine, in his writings, as you have heard, shuddered at; this, now in Pelagius's own writings, he condemns by his own reply;
2:12
this too the blessed Jerome—whose eloquence the whole West awaits, as dew upon the fleece—for already many heretics, with their dogmas, have been struck down by his very assault—condemned in his letter which he recently issued to Ctesiphon, and likewise refutes in the book which he now writes, contending in the manner of a dialogue brought together as a debate. For this is to hold the slippery dragon on a hook, lest it be able to escape.' But further, the bishop John, hearing none of these things, was endeavoring to exact of us that we should confess ourselves accusers with himself as judge. It was answered very often by all of us:
2:13
nos accusatores huius non sumus, sed quid fratres tui, patres nostri, senserint et decreuerint super hac haeresi, quam nunc laicus uulgo praedicat, intimamus, ne Ecclesiam, tuam praesertim ad cuius sinum conuolauimus, te ignorante conturbet\'. at ille cum saepe nos docendi simulatione in aliquam professionis speciem temptaret inducere, dicens, quia ad Abraham dictum esset a Domino: ambula coram me et esto sine macula, et Zachariam atque Elisabeth pronuntiatos esse iustos ambos ante Dominum, incedentes in omnibus iustificationibus Domini sine querela;— quod quidem ab Origene dictum ab eo proferri compluribus nobis notum eratcui responsum per me est: nos filii Ecclesiae catholicae sumus;
「我們不是這人的控告者,乃是要稟明你的弟兄、我們的父老,就這如今一個俗人在民間公然宣講的異端所作的判斷與裁決,免得它擾亂教會——尤其是你自己的教會,我們已奔到它的懷中——而你卻不知情。」然而他屢次假借教導之名,試圖引我們落入某種表態的形貌,說主曾對亞伯拉罕說:「你當在我面前行走,作完全人」,又說撒迦利亞與伊利沙伯都被稱為在主面前的義人,遵行主一切的律例,無可指摘——這話我們多人都清楚知道,原是出自俄利根,由他所引述的——便藉我向他回答說:「我們是大公教會的兒女;
'We are not accusers of this man, but we make known what your brothers, our fathers, have judged and decreed concerning this heresy which now a layman openly preaches, lest it should trouble the Church—your own especially, to whose bosom we have fled—without your knowing it.' But he, when he often tried under the pretense of instruction to lead us into some show of profession, saying that it was said to Abraham by the Lord, 'Walk before me and be without blemish,' and that Zacharias and Elizabeth were pronounced both righteous before the Lord, walking in all the justifications of the Lord without complaint—which indeed, said by Origen, we knew well was being brought forth by him before very many of us—to him it was answered through me: 'We are sons of the Catholic Church;
2:14
do not demand of us, father, that we should dare to be teachers over teachers, or judges over judges. The fathers, whom the whole Church throughout the world approves, in whose communion you rejoice to cling, have decreed these dogmas to be damnable: with them approving, it is fitting that we obey.
2:15
Why do you ask the sons what they think, when you hear the fathers as to what they decree?' To which he, disputing long, and—to us, on account of our inexperience, through an interpreter unknown to us, whom very often the foremost and religious men, the presbyters Passerius and Avitus and the former leader Domnus, refuted as either interpreting wrongly, or suppressing much, or substituting some things for others—to us, as I have said, with our proceedings for the most part either tampered with or passed over in silence, the bishop John said: 'If he were to say that a man can do this without the help of God, it would be most wicked and damnable; but now, since he adds that a man can be without sin not without the help of God, what do you say? Or do you perhaps deny the help of God?' To whom I replied:
2:16
'With you yourselves even now bearing witness and testifying, and with the men mentioned above, anathema to him who denies the help of God. I certainly do not deny it, especially since, on the contrary, I have refuted it against the heretics.' Then, when—the judge having been recognized and the interpreter exposed—we cried out that he was a Latin heretic, that we were Latins, that a heresy better known to the Latin parts should be discussed before Latin judges, and that he was thrusting himself almost shamelessly forward to judge—when indeed we were not accusers—being both a single man and a suspect one, it was necessary that it should be said by many: 'No one can be at the same time both a heretic and an advocate and a judge.'
2:17
And after many other things were transacted, the bishop John brought forth his final sentence, confirming at last our demand and intention, that to the blessed Innocent, the Roman pope, brethren and letters should be sent, all parties about to follow whatever he should decree; but that the heretic Pelagius, with silence imposed upon him thus far, should keep quiet, and that our people should cease from the railing of the convicted and confessed John. We all consented to this sentence; and when thanksgiving had been celebrated, peace made and completed, we departed with a prayer as a testimony of peace.
2:18
But now, when after forty-seven days, on the first day of the dedication festival, as I had been accustomed when I was present, I had hastened to attend upon the bishop John, I straightway received from him, in place of the grace of a greeting, the brand of a false charge. For he said to me: 'Why do you come to me, you man who blasphemed?'—not wishing, as I believe, to be understood: 'Touch me not, for I am clean and without sin.' But I, conscious of nothing in myself, asked: 'When, or in whose hearing, or of what sort is that thing said, which could be ascribed to blasphemy?' The bishop replied: 'I heard you say that not even with the help of God can a man be without sin.'
2:19
ego quidem, beatissimi saoerdotes, sicut et nos testes estis et uniuersa fraternitas et praeterea sancti uiri qui huic testimonio amore ueritatis adsistunt, statim testificatus sum dicens, quia eiusmodi uerbum, quod nunc a me dictum episcopus intenderit, numquam de ore meo antea processisset. quamquam hanc inconuenientiam miserae falsitatis ruminans saepius crebra expositione non tam me probasse quam alium uidear prodidisse. concedo enim, ut, qualecumque dictum illud est, dixerim: quomodo Latinum expers Latinitatis Graecus audinit?
I indeed, most blessed priests—as you yourselves are my witnesses, and the whole brotherhood, and besides the holy men who, out of love of the truth, stand by for this testimony—straightway testified, saying that such a word as the bishop now alleged was said by me had never before proceeded from my mouth. And yet, while I ruminate over this incongruity of a wretched falsehood, by frequent rehearsal I may seem not so much to have proved my own case as to have disclosed another's. For I grant that, whatever sort that saying was, I did say it: how did a Greek, devoid of Latinity, hear a Latin word?
2:20
aut, si audiuit sacrilegum uerbum, cur non statim coarguit blasphemantem uel, ut lenius ageret, quasi incautum filium pius pater de cohibenda licentia periculosi sermonis admonuit ? sed e contrario post plurimam magni temporis obliuionem ipse per se accusationem intulit, ipse testimonium perhibuit, ipse iudicium promulgauit, omnium scelerum officia in suae personae auctoritatem suscipiens, praesertim euangelica lectione diligenter instructus, Dominum nostrum Iesum nisi testimonio principis non fuisse damnatum. ex alio mihi latere fratres mei adsistebant, ex alio falsi fratres.
Or, if he did hear the sacrilegious word, why did he not at once convict the blasphemer, or—to act more gently—why did he not, like a godly father, admonish a heedless son about restraining the license of dangerous speech? But on the contrary, after very much forgetfulness of a long time, he himself by himself brought the accusation, he himself bore the testimony, he himself promulgated the judgment, taking upon the authority of his own person the offices of all crimes—especially he who had been diligently instructed by the Gospel reading that our Lord Jesus was not condemned save by the testimony of the ruler. On one side my brethren stood by me, on the other side the false brethren.
2:21
Then in that same assembly, on one side with me sat the presbyters Avitus and Vitalis; on the other, some unknown interpreter, and then men approved both in the world and before God, the presbyter Passerio and Domnus the former duke. Both of these, that they might deign to be present as interpreters in keeping with their experience and faith, were summoned and brought together at the request of your assembly, with bishop John himself agreeing. You yourselves also were in the midst, and in that gathering it is no less astonishing to have heard than to have seen how a word once let fall could pass by so many adversaries, colleagues, and hearers, and enter the unsuspecting ears of one understanding hearer. But I, driven by the heat of truth, am pressed hard enough: I go beyond the measure of my profession.
2:22
It must rather be granted that the interpreter seemed to have erred in speaking than that the bishop feigned in hearing; and now, in return for the wages he paid to the heretics, he must be made to seek out false witnesses in his own support, demanding them. Indeed no one ought any longer to wonder that false witnesses are sought out and arise in Jerusalem from the priests and elders: this the blood of Stephen cried out, this the standards of the Lord's cross signify, this even now the wrong stirred up by them makes plain. But whether these things seem to have been rashly believed by the bishop, or maliciously feigned, or ignorantly misheard, I commit to Christ the judge to be sifted. Far be it from me ever that I, a poor man, a sinner, unknown, should dare to challenge a bishop, and especially the bishop of Jerusalem, before the bishops.
2:23
mea mihi apud eminentissimam Trinitatem omnipotentiae Dei et apud uniuersos seruos eius eatholioos simplicitas et probatio sat est. testem inuoco Deum super animam meam, beatissimi sacerdotes, scientibus haec eadem uobis mecumque testantibus, nullam me in illo conuentu uestro ore meo protulisse blasphemiam neque huiuscemodi uerba quae mihi ab episcopo Iohanne sunt obiecta dixisse, hoc est, etiam cum adiutorio Dei non posse esse hominem sine peccato. satisfactum etiam contentioni opinionis, ignarae nobis, ideo nolo, ne forte a uobis quidem non auditum, a me tamen dictum putantes testimonio laboretis ambiguo;
My simplicity and integrity before the most eminent Trinity of God's omnipotence, and before all His catholic servants, is enough for me. I call God to witness upon my soul, most blessed priests—you who know these same things and bear witness with me—that I uttered no blasphemy with my mouth in that assembly of yours, nor spoke such words as were laid against me by bishop John: namely, that not even with God's help can a man be without sin. As for the contention of an opinion unknown to me, I am unwilling to make satisfaction, lest perhaps you, thinking that what was not even heard by you was nevertheless spoken by me, should labor under an ambiguous testimony.
2:24
uulgo autem rumorique propterea, ne, dum episcopum mentiri posse non crederet, alia innocentem oredulitate peccaret. et inde quis ignoret auctores uel in accusatione Susannae uel in lapidatione Nabuthae ? Et, ne forte quis nesoiat, in Hierosolymam numquam ad effundendum sanguinem Christianum uel argenti suffragia uel flagella militum defuisse, nunc, quoniam ab hoc qualicumque uerbo esse me liberum reor, liberum fide uestra, liberum conscientia mea, ipsius uerbi ambiguitate discussa conabor exquirere, hi qui ita nos respondisse adserunt, qualiter ipsi interrogasse uideantur.
And to the common report and rumor likewise, lest, while one would not believe that a bishop could lie, he should sin by another kind of innocent credulity. And who from this would not recognize the authors, whether in the accusation of Susanna or in the stoning of Naboth? And lest perhaps anyone be unaware that in Jerusalem there was never lacking, for the shedding of Christian blood, either the bribes of silver or the scourges of soldiers—now, since I reckon myself free from this word, whatever it be, free by your faith, free by my own conscience, the ambiguity of the word itself having been sifted, I shall try to inquire: those who assert that we so answered, in what manner they themselves seem to have questioned.
2:25
Perhaps through the manner of their own questioning the secret of the dogma will be laid bare, so that, striking with reciprocal wounds, they may with surer aim chastise their own marksman with the darts he shot back. For he says that this was answered by us: 'Not even with God's help can a man be without sin.' If anyone of men should think this must be so said as to affirm that God cannot act under the weakness of man, and should suspect that something is impossible to God's omnipotence in all the creation of things heavenly, earthly, and infernal—him I would call, not only by my own sentence, a blasphemer to be detested with anathema, but also one to be condemned, after the example of Nadab and Abihu, by divine fire, or, in keeping with the perdition of Dathan and Abiram, to be received alive by the gaping of the earth and plunged down to hell.
2:26
utrique siquidem praesumptione cordis Dei potentiae derogarunt uel illi, dam ignem alienum, quasi hoc indigeret Deus, offerunt, uel isti, dum resistentes Moysi in terram repromissionis introduci se posse diffidunt.
For both alike, by the presumption of their heart, detracted from the power of God: those, while they offer strange fire, as if God needed this; these, while, resisting Moses, they distrust that they can be brought into the land of promise. God can do all things, and what He wills He can always do; as mighty in making something from nothing, so easy in bringing to completion what is already done. For to Himself it is subject to be able, when He wills. This the grace granted according to the Spirit confesses; this the law written according to the letter testifies; this the natural law understands in all men; this the most orderly motion of the world displays. For what Gentile would dare to say this, who has ever before his eyes the distinct elements of heaven and earth and sea?
2:27
quia Iudaeorum hoc suspioari queat, ad quem traditae per Moysen legis scientia quantulacumque peruenerit, cum scriptum et agnoscat et credat, nuda discissis Erythraei maris luotibus profunda patuisse et tutum iter in pelago pediti praebuisse terreno, diuisumque Iordanem resupims in fontem refluxisse gurgitibus, uel mortalem in corpore Heliam euectum flammei currus igne nec laesum, uel praeparatis onustum escis Abacuc, ut ieiuno inter esurientes feras iusto prandium ministraret, ut uulgata narrat editio, in momento diei a Iudaea. in Babyloniam translatum fuisse protinus ac relatum?
Or what Jew could suspect this, to whom even the slightest knowledge of the law handed down through Moses has come, since he both recognizes and believes what is written: that the deep lay open when the waves of the Red Sea were cleft, and offered a safe path in the sea to the foot upon dry land; that the Jordan, divided, flowed back upon itself to its source in upturned currents; that Elijah was carried up mortal in his body by the fire of a fiery chariot and yet not harmed; or that Habakkuk, laden with prepared food, that he might minister a meal to the fasting just man among the hungering beasts, was, as the common edition relates, in a moment of a day carried straightway from Judea to Babylon and brought back?
2:28
quis hoc Christianus in cor suum uel in atomo cogitationis admittat, qui sciat Lazarum quadriduanum mortuum fetentibus membris ac liquida iam intra semet pelle fluitantibus Domini deuoto prosiluisse seruitio; qui legerit caecum a natiuitate eundemque iam aetatem habentem uel factis subito uel refectis uiguisse luminibus; qui probauerit uentos fluctus ao tempestates simulque inuicem elementa rixantia dominicae increpationis audito mansuetasse praecepto; qui credat Petrum, carnali sarcina grauem et ter Dominum continuo negaturum, super tumidos fluctus pendulis incessisse uestigiis?
What Christian would admit this even in an atom of thought, who knows that Lazarus, four days dead, with limbs already stinking and his skin now flowing in liquid decay within itself, sprang forth at the devoted service of the Lord; who has read that the man blind from birth and now of full age suddenly flourished, his eyes either made or restored; who has proved that winds, waves, and tempests, and the elements at strife with one another at once, grew gentle when they heard the Lord's rebuking command; who believes that Peter, heavy with the burden of the flesh and about to deny the Lord three times in quick succession, walked upon the swelling waves with footsteps hung in air?
2:29
And so I judge that all men—whether those endowed with surpassing faith and wisdom, or those who are otherwise—venerate, believe, and confess this, that God can do all things. For this reason indeed He is called Almighty by every creature in general, because He can do all things. And this is God alone who says: 'These things are impossible with men.' And elsewhere He teaches, saying: 'Without me you can do nothing.' He therefore who can do all things can do all things in man. But further, why is earth and ashes proud, that it should say, 'man can,' when it is God who can? The apostle cries out: 'By His grace I am what I am, and His grace was not empty in me, but I labored more abundantly than they all—yet not I, but the grace of God with me.'
2:30
What, rash presumptuous man, do you regard in that he said 'with me'? Attend, that he prefaced it with 'not I.' Wherefore between these two words 'not I' and 'with me' the grace of God stands in the middle, whose it is truly both to will and to accomplish for the sake of good will, and yet by the will of man. Whence too the one was confident to say 'with me' who had said 'not I.' In the will of man, therefore, the grace of divine power operates, which has granted this very willing itself. Thus the conscience of man professes, so that he says 'not I'; the grace of God bestows, so that 'with me.' The apostle cries: 'By the grace of God I am what I am.' For he remembered the Lord proclaiming: 'No one comes to me unless the Father has drawn him'; and again elsewhere:
2:31
ego autem uobiscum sum omnibus diebus usque in consummationem saeculi. et alio loco de Spiritu Sancto sic ait: expedit uobis, ut ego eam: nam si non abiero, non ueniet consolator ille ad uos; si autem iero, mittam eum ad uos. Infelix, o homo, secundum ueritatem sententiae Dei! Pater te attrahit, Filius tecum et Spiritus consolator, et in hac tanta diuinae maiestatis circumstantia audes dicere: \'gratia quidem Dei adiuuante sed mea possibilitate sum quod sum\'! adseris enim nunc post hanc sociam antiquo errori emendationem: potest homo sine peccato esse cum Dei adiutorio;
「我就常與你們同在,直到世界的末了。」又在另一處祂這樣論到聖靈:「我去是與你們有益的;我若不去,那保惠師就不到你們這裡來;我若去,就差祂來。」人哪,照神判語的真理看,你是何等不幸!父吸引你,子與你同在,又有聖靈作保惠師;而在這神聖威嚴如此浩大的環繞中,你竟敢說:「固然有神的恩典相助,但靠我自己的能力,我成了何等人」!因為你如今在這與你舊有錯謬相結合的更正之後斷言:「人靠神的幫助能無罪」;
'But I am with you all the days, even to the consummation of the age.' And in another place He so speaks of the Holy Spirit: 'It is expedient for you that I go; for if I do not go, that Comforter will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.' Unhappy, O man, according to the truth of God's sentence! The Father draws you, the Son is with you, and the Spirit the Comforter; and in this so great encompassing of the divine majesty you dare to say: 'By the grace of God indeed assisting, but by my own possibility, I am what I am'! For you now assert, after this correction allied to your ancient error: 'a man can be without sin with God's help';
2:32
although in your book, which you marked with the title of 'Testimonies,' this very sentence is written in this manner: that a man can be without sin and easily keep God's commandments, if he will. There no grace of God, no help is named, however often you may speak of the grace of God. 'I did not therefore deny it, because I did not say it'—but I am to be taken as having said it, because I did not deny it. As if indeed Susanna were therefore to be believed to have confessed adultery, because she did not deny it to those accusing her, or as if the Lord Jesus had approved the testimony of false witnesses because He was silent. But if with you not to have denied is to have said, and to have been silent is to have cried out, then in vain does David ask: 'Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth and a door of enclosure over my lips';
2:33
in vain too do I confirm, by witnesses and by testimony, that I did not say that of which I am accused, and another could hear what my speech did not say. But I grant that you should reckon as said what you by no means said. What do we do about this, that, finding from the sense a diversity of speech, they do not cohere with discordant joinings, since the very page does not admit words at variance with one another? For you write that a man can be without sin and easily keep God's commandments, if he will; and, just as the most blessed father Jerome expounded concerning this same sentence in the letter which he wrote to Ctesiphon, at last, as if waking from a most heavy sleep, you add: 'not without the help of God.'
2:34
For in this very thing truth itself fights against you and cries out. Why, through a disdainful swelling and a queasy false modesty, do you withhold from your own mouth the help of God as unnecessary to you, you who reckon all things easy for yourself? You honor me with the tips of your lips, but your heart is far from me. There is no need of two in a work which is easy for one, and in vain does the grace of the Godhead interpose itself where a man confesses that he can do easily what he wills. You said that the commandments are easy to one who wills; but I assert this too, that you should say even hard things are fulfilled. Yet however you promise it can be done through man, you reproach the Lord with envy, who attempts to ascribe to His added help what man alone by his own will could have accomplished.
2:35
Either take away from man the 'if he will' and ascribe to grace what he can do; or, since you attribute to man the being able when he wills, remove the feigned, flattering, and incoherent participation of grace, and out of the abundance of the heart profess your naked blasphemy. But it is not for my part to track these things out more widely, especially since the most blessed fathers Augustine and Jerome have handed over to the western provinces a fullest proof of the heresy convicted. Let me return to the question proposed above, to which I came, roused not by confidence of talent but moved by wrong. You say that a man can be in this world without sin with God's help. You say 'man can,' I say 'God can.' The three boys the seething flame within did not harm.
2:36
quis eorum quod contra naturam factum est potuit: utrumne ipsi an quartus in medio eorum similis filio Dei ? leprosus exclamat: Domine, si uis, potes me mundare, possibilitate uoluntatem manifestans. uoluntatem possibilitate confirmans. ipse est enim solus, cui, cum uelit, posse subsistit. aocesserunt ad eum caeci, ut inluminarentur orantes; quibus ait Iesus: creditis, quod possim hoc facere? Dominus Christus summo praemio fidei dignum iudioat, si quis haeo filium Dei posse crediderit; et Britannicus noster mox, ut uoluerit, se posse confidit! fideli paralytico Dominus dicit: constans esto, fili: dimissa sunt tibi peccata tua;
他們中哪一個能成就那違反自然之事呢:是他們自己,還是他們當中那第四位、彷彿神的兒子的呢?那長大痲瘋的喊著說:「主若肯,必能叫我潔淨」,以「能」彰顯「願」,又以「能」堅定「願」。因為唯有祂是那位當祂願意時、「能」便存立的主。瞎子來到祂面前,祈求得見光明;耶穌對他們說:「你們信我能作這事麼?」主基督判定:凡信神的兒子能作這些事的,就配得信德至高的賞賜;而我們那不列顛人卻立刻自信:他一旦願意,自己就能!主對那有信心的癱子說:「孩子,放心吧,你的罪赦了」;
Which of them could do what was done against nature: was it they themselves, or the fourth in their midst, like to the Son of God? The leper cries out: 'Lord, if you will, you can make me clean,' manifesting the will by the possibility, confirming the will by the possibility. For He alone is the one to whom, when He wills, the being able subsists. The blind came to Him, praying that they might be enlightened; to whom Jesus says: 'Do you believe that I can do this?' The Lord Christ judges worthy of the highest reward of faith whoever has believed that the Son of God can do these things; and our Briton soon trusts that, as soon as he wills, he himself can! To the faithful paralytic the Lord says: 'Be of good courage, son: your sins are forgiven you';
2:37
et nunc nonus magister ministerque mensarum remissionem peccatorum de sua magis ausus est possibilitate praesumere, nec de Domino expectat audire! scribae non intellegentes ueritatem murmurant et dicunt: quis potest dimittere peccata nisi solus Deus.?; et hic abolita esse iudicat, quae Deum nesciat dimisisse! Ecce inflatus spiritu carnis tuae, tamquam super nihil sit, libero superbus arbitrio gloriaris et dicis \'peccator sum quia uolo; pecoo dum uolo; cum autem rursum uoluero, possum esse sine peccato\'. quod dicis \'pecco cum uolo\' uerum est, quia et quod opere non feceris, cogitatione fecisti;
如今這第九位「席間的師傅與執事」竟敢寧可憑自己的能力擅斷罪的赦免,也不肯等候從主聽見!文士不明白真理,竊竊私語說:「除了神以外,誰能赦罪呢?」而這人卻判定那些他不曉得是神所赦免的,已被廢除!看哪,你被你肉體的靈所充脹,彷彿這算不得什麼,你以自由意志驕傲誇口,說:「我作罪人是因我願意;我犯罪是趁我願意;但當我再次願意時,我就能無罪。」你說「我趁我願意便犯罪」,這是真的,因為連你行為上未作的,你在意念中已作了;
and now this ninth master and minister of tables has dared to presume the remission of sins rather from his own possibility, nor does he wait to hear it from the Lord! The scribes, not understanding the truth, murmur and say: 'Who can forgive sins but God alone?'; and this man judges those things to be abolished which he does not know God to have forgiven! Behold, puffed up with the spirit of your flesh, as though it were nothing, you glory proud in free will and say: 'I am a sinner because I will; I sin while I will; but when I will again, I can be without sin.' What you say, 'I sin when I will,' is true, because even what you have not done in deed, you have done in thought;
2:38
Again, 'when I will, I do not sin'—a hard thing indeed and difficult, nor always within the power of all, but yet that it can sometimes come to pass is not doubtful; but truly that one who has sometime sinned can be without sin is impossible, apart from the grace of baptism alone, where, in the person of the Lord, it is said: 'Your sins are forgiven you.' This I am persuaded to believe, because I am permitted to hear it: 'I can therefore be without sin'—'in this corruption at least, in which we live, I do not accept it, I do not presume it, I do not dare it.' For if David prays to God, 'Against you only have I sinned and done evil before you,' and, according to the Apocalypse of John, the dead are to be judged out of those things which they sinned before God, out of those things which are written in the books, receiving according to their works:
2:39
cur meum circa me praesumo iudicium, si me scio etiam de ipso iudicandum? aut, si libri illi sacri numquam nisi in iudicio aperiendi, pariter uitae nostrae bona malaque suscipiunt, examen iudicii in pondere praebituri: quomodo sine examine in hac uita et ante mortem abolitos esse cognoscimus, quos non solum post mortem uerum etiam post resurrectionem legimus proferendos ? ego in potestate habui pecoare, liberari a peccato in potestate non habeo. precari meum est, absolui non meum. ubi uero peccato me dedi, seruus factus sum accusatoris, reus iudicis.
why do I presume my own judgment concerning myself, if I know that I am to be judged even concerning that very thing? Or, if those sacred books, never to be opened except in judgment, take up alike the goods and evils of our life, about to present the scrutiny of judgment in the balance: how do we recognize as abolished, without scrutiny, in this life and before death, those things which we read are to be brought forth not only after death but even after the resurrection? I have had it in my power to sin; to be freed from sin I do not have in my power. To pray is mine, to be absolved is not mine. But where I have given myself to sin, I have become the slave of the accuser, the defendant of the judge.
2:40
I can, on account of the merits sent ahead by assiduous prayers, bear hope from a good judge; but to vindicate an innocent conscience without fear before the promulgation of the sentence, I cannot. For the apostle says: 'Do not judge anything before the time, until the Lord comes, who will both illuminate the hidden things of darkness and make manifest the counsels of hearts: and then shall each one have praise from God.' Otherwise, if it is in man's power to make himself free from his sin, either Christ is not judge, or He is in vain. But you say: 'I said a man is without sin according to this sense: when the sinner has groaned, then he shall be saved—that is, then he shall begin to belong to salvation.' Yet he will not at once be without sin.
2:41
For the Lord, when He had entered the house of believing Zacchaeus, said: 'Today salvation has been made to this house.' Surely, if one believed, was the whole household at once without sin, into which then indeed, when the greater part of the house believed, the beginning of salvation entered? For David too, when he had sinned, groaned; and although he had deserved to hear that his offense was forgiven him, yet long afterward he expiated that very thing by exile and by very much reproach, so that manifestly both a penalty was rendered in the present and remission was promised for the future; and through this God granted much of mercy to the groaning sinner, that he might purge by a temporal chastisement the sin which was worthy of death. To Ananias it is said concerning Paul, as he made his complaint about the persecution with fear:
2:42
ego monstrabo illi, quanta patietur propter nomenmeum, ut, cum Paulus ibi solueretur, ubi ligasset persequendo Christum, mox patiendo pro Christo tribulatus usque ad mortem in resurrectione glorificatus existeret. ita fit, quia misericordia et ueritas praeeunt semper faciem Dei, ut, si in tempore ab ingemescente uoluntarium sacrificium, ut ueritas in misericordia fiat, contribulati spiritus et contriti cordis offertur, in fine misericordia iudicio praeferatur. Dominus Christus uenturus in gloria Dei Patris et creditur et speratur iudicare uiuos et mortuos, a cuius adspectu, ut Scriptura testatur, fugiet caelum et terra;
「我要指示他,為我的名必須受許多的苦」,以致保羅在他從前逼迫基督而捆綁人的地方被釋放,隨即又因為基督受苦,受患難直到死地,在復活中得著榮耀而站立。事情如此成就,因為憐憫與真理常行在神的面前,以致:若有人在合宜的時候因哀嘆而獻上甘心的祭——好叫真理在憐憫中成就——獻上憂傷的靈與痛悔的心為祭,那麼到末了,憐憫就能勝過審判。主基督將要在父神的榮耀中降臨,我們相信並盼望祂審判活人死人;正如聖經所見證的,天地都要從祂面前逃避;
'I will show him how much he must suffer for my name,' so that, when Paul was loosed there where he had bound by persecuting Christ, soon, by suffering for Christ, afflicted unto death, he might stand glorified in the resurrection. So it comes to pass, because mercy and truth go ever before the face of God, that, if in due time a voluntary sacrifice is offered by one groaning—so that truth may be made in mercy—a sacrifice of a troubled spirit and a contrite heart, then in the end mercy may be preferred to judgment. The Lord Christ, about to come in the glory of God the Father, is both believed and hoped to judge the living and the dead, from whose face, as Scripture testifies, heaven and earth shall flee;
2:43
and there exist men who, neither on account of ignorance—not to say on account of conscience—judge themselves to be subject to the judgment that is to come, and tremble at the coming of the Lord and the illumination of His brightness, with the elements burning and the world perishing! Whom I fear to be among those of whom the Lord forewarns: 'For many shall say in that day'—men, that is, of that carnal arrogance by which they seduced men, and not so much before God as still in their own eyes just—'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name, and in your name done great miracles?' And then will I swear to them and say: 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of iniquity.' It is said through the prophet David in the person of Christ:
2:44
'Lord, who shall dwell in your tabernacle, or who shall rest on your holy mountain? He who walks without blemish and works justice.' This is truly to say: he who can be and is without sin. For the Lord Himself also says of Himself: 'The prince of this world comes, and finds nothing of his own in me.' For what is the devil's? Without doubt, sin. For from the beginning the devil is a liar; and against him the Lord is the mind that speaks truth in His heart and has done no guile on His tongue. A great and strong angel, as Scripture testifies, cries in heaven: 'Who is worthy to open the book and to loose its seals?'
2:45
And no one was able, neither in heaven, nor on earth, nor under the earth, to open the book, nor to look upon it; and John weeps much and mourns, because out of the whole of rational creatures no one was found worthy who might open the book, that he might see it. As John weeps, one of the elders consoles him and says: 'Do not weep, John. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has prevailed to open the book and to loose its seals.' What, I ask, is this book, which from the hand of Him who lives forever and ever no one was able to receive, except Him who walks without blemish and works justice?
2:46
It is too little that He is without blemish, too little that He is the Lamb, unless He had also been slain, unless He had crowned the purity of His life with the testimony of His passion—having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God: nor is there doubt that these are the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and piety, the spirit of the fear of the Lord. What then is this book? As I believe, of judgment. For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son. Alas for the grief! I am compelled to say what I shuddered to have thought.
2:47
Behold now even Pelagius, who has dared to profess himself to be without blemish and sin, consequently reckons himself worthy of receiving the book and the judgment, and it is the next step that he should say of himself: 'I have power to lay down my soul and to take it up again,' and that he should prepare himself to be a consort in the throne of Christ. Wretched man, who does not rather understand that he is preparing himself to be the forerunner of Antichrist's coming, who, when he has been revealed, exalts himself above all that is called or that is worshiped as God—just like this man who now compares himself to an equality with the only Son of God.
2:48
The Lamb of God, the Son of God, in order to receive the book from the Father's hand, presents the marks of His passion, not judging the victory accomplished except in death and in resurrection; and the 'sinless' mind confirms that the perfection of an immaculate life can come to him while he eats, drinks, and sleeps! Our Lord Jesus, after the fast of forty days, the devil, tempting Him thrice and thrice overcome, left—and did not leave Him forever but for a time, about to return more fierce even to the death of the cross, to trouble Him through an apostle; and our 'impassible' one, with the temptations vanquished, to be sure (as it seems to himself) together with their author, trusts that he can no longer be tempted or troubled!
2:49
That perfect Lamb—He who not only has no sins but even takes away the sins of the world, and who has seven horns and seven eyes—does not so winnow the tempter as to keep him from returning; and this our man, mutilated, light in the forehead, one-eyed, deems no protection necessary upon his head, who presumes possibility in the flesh! Wretched man, who, according to the Gospel, would perhaps rather, if he were blind, have no sin! But perhaps, because the seven eyes are seven spirits, he boasts that he abounds in all these, and that his inner man, as it were, thrives with the heaped-up virtues of sevenfold grace—especially he who glories in the very titles of his so many dogmas.
2:50
unde fieri potest, ut iudicio suo se arbitretur spiritu sapientiae refertum, praecipue cum dicat facilia Dei esse mandata; spiritu intellectus sufficientem maxime, quo praenoscat et praedicat peccatores omnes simul cum impiis in aeternum ignem esse damnandos; spiritu consilii diuitem, quo moneat malum nec cogitandum; spiritu uirtutis potentem, quo adfirmet posse esse hominem sine peccato; spiritu scientiae inflatum, quo sperat, nisi qui scientiam legis habuerit, sine peocato esse non posse; spiritu pietatis exuberantem, quo doceat inimicum uelut amicum diligendum oblitus, quia ipse dixerit, inimico omnimodis non oredendum;
由此便能發生這樣的事:他憑自己的判斷認為自己充滿智慧的靈,尤其因他說神的誡命是容易的;他自以為在聰明的靈上綽綽有餘,藉此預知並宣講一切罪人連同不敬虔的人都要被定入永火;他自以為在謀略的靈上富足,藉此勸人連惡也不可思想;他自以為在能力的靈上剛強,藉此斷言人能無罪;他在知識的靈上自高自大,藉此盼望:除了有律法知識的人,沒有人能無罪;他在虔誠的靈上滿溢,藉此教導當愛仇敵如愛朋友——卻忘了他自己曾說,對仇敵絕不可在任何方面信任;
Whence it can come to pass that by his own judgment he reckons himself filled with the spirit of wisdom, especially since he says God's commandments are easy; sufficient above all in the spirit of understanding, by which he foreknows and preaches that all sinners together with the impious are to be condemned to eternal fire; rich in the spirit of counsel, by which he advises that evil is not even to be thought; mighty in the spirit of might, by which he affirms a man can be without sin; puffed up in the spirit of knowledge, by which he hopes that, except him who has the knowledge of the law, one cannot be without sin; overflowing in the spirit of piety, by which he teaches that an enemy is to be loved as a friend—forgetting that he himself said an enemy is by no means to be trusted in any way;
2:51
honored with the spirit of the fear of God, by which, at last awakened after much drunkenness, he adds that a man can be without sin not without the help of God; and through these grades, as I think, of presumptions, he does not shrink from ascending, lifted up even to this, that he says that, after the likeness of Christ, in the perfection of his own power, full in his entirety, the Holy Spirit descended upon him and remained—although this was given to Him alone by God the Father, to whom also He gave the name which is above every name, who alone is without sin and walks without blemish, with whom abides the very ointment of sanctification.
2:52
But we run in the odor of His ointments, and meanwhile, with the Lord going before, we catch upon us the sweet breaths of life by the breathing of the vital air. But you say: 'Why do you provoke me with so great a wrong? Why do you burden me with the odium of so arrogant a word? Would I, a servant, dare compare myself to my Lord? Would I, earth and ashes, set myself beside the Word of God? Ought I, subject to death, to be called equal to the victor over death?' Well indeed, O condemned wickedness: giving testimony to God, you are humbled in words, but otherwise your meaning cries out in your pages. You say a man can be without sin; again and more often I repeat it. The man who can do this is Christ: either presume the name, or lay aside the confidence.
2:53
Deus illud uni tantum donauit et hoc non nisi primogenito in multis fratribus. sic catholica fide traditur, sic tenemus. sane Dominus noster admonuit infideles: ego ueni in nomine Patris mei, et non me recepistis. ueniet alius in nomine suo, forsitan ipsum recipietis. aut nobiscum illum, cui credimus peccatores, unum sine peccato eundemque unigenitum sequere aut, si tu es ille alius, confitere. ipse est dominus Iesus, qui morte deuicta et diabolo triumphato ascendens in altum captiuam duxit captiuitatem, dedit dona hominibus; de cuius plenitudine nos omnes accepimus; sicut apostolus docet: unicuique autem nostrum data est gratia. secundum mensuram donationis Christi.
God granted that to one alone, and this to none but the firstborn among many brethren. So it is handed down by the catholic faith, so we hold. Truly our Lord admonished the unbelieving: 'I have come in the name of my Father, and you have not received me. Another shall come in his own name; perhaps him you will receive.' Either follow, with us sinners who believe in Him, that one without sin, the same Only-begotten; or, if you are that other, confess it. He is the Lord Jesus, who, death conquered and the devil triumphed over, ascending on high, led captivity captive, gave gifts to men; of whose fullness we all have received; as the apostle teaches: 'But to each one of us grace is given according to the measure of the giving of Christ.'
2:54
And to the Romans the same teacher of the Gentiles writes: 'For I say, through the grace that is given to me, to all who are among you: not to be wise above what one ought to be wise, but to be wise unto sobriety, and to each one as God has divided the measure of faith.' Then to the Corinthians he proclaims: 'Now there are divisions of graces, but the same Spirit; and there are divisions of operations, but the same Lord; and there are divisions of ministrations, but the same God who works all in all'; and after very many enumerations of graces and virtues he adds: 'But all these one and the same Spirit works, dividing to each as He wills.'
2:55
Then by the comparison of the members in the body of man he makes manifest that the body of the Church's unity comes together, out of unequal modes of works, into one concord of perfection, proving that there is absolutely none of the members which does not need the help and connection of another, with the Lord Himself constituted as head, in whom are all the senses and the hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Whence to us also He gave understanding, by which we might know what is the Word in Christ Jesus, in whom is all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; into whom, according to the testimony of John, the Holy Spirit descending and remaining upon Him declared Him to be the Lord.
2:56
And so, if no one has except him who asks of you, and no one receives except according to the division and measure, and he who has received needs another's aid to keep it: with what madness, I ask, does he promise himself out of fullness, who in his own singularity is not sufficient? Of the Lord the evangelist testifies: 'But there was the true Light, which enlightens every man coming into this world.' But the Lord says to His apostles: 'You are the light of this world.' There, in the Lord alone, is the whole light, because true; here, in all the apostles, light indeed, but from the Light which is the whole.
2:57
And since this is so in the apostles, in whose election the whole body of the Church was taken up, what can we—we, I say, and as individuals—what can we be seen to be after them, except, according to the apostle Peter, men unlearned, believing only through faith the evangelical and prophetic word, as to a lamp shining in a dark place? As if enlightened, even we ourselves are persuaded that our lamps, prepared in good works, should be burning in our hands—lamps which, wearied by manifold temptations, are imperiled always by their own failing and by another's blow. Whence too the Lord says in the Gospel: 'And if the very light which is in us is darkness: how great shall that darkness itself be?'
2:58
But I grant that this light, however small it be, should remain with unfailing vigor even to the end—that is, that it should not lose that gift which it has obtained of special grace—otherwise the fullness of light stands present in its entirety, no gloom remains: but I call gloom the darkness of folly arising from the filth of sin—what if it is a fitting reckoning, that as much as has been lacking of light, so much of gloom remains over? But further it is most difficult that the gloom should have no stumbling-block. It is necessary for a man, established in a quantity of light and in remnants of gloom, willing the good and not escaping the evil, both that help should subsist and that sin should not be lacking. But if to anyone this seems obscurely said, let him take an example from human conduct.
2:59
Two individuals have diverse gifts, one that he should be humble in silence, the other that he should be persuasive in teaching. That one, to whom silence is dear, if perhaps he be asked to render account of his faith, do you suppose he will suffer no offense in discoursing? Or if he to whom doctrine has been committed in teaching, if he be chastised for arrogance, do you suppose he assumes no deceit under humility? Or do you easily reckon that the simple man is free from scurrility, the cheerful one from glibness of word, the careful from irascibility, the patient from negligence, the meek from sloth, the learned from boastfulness, the submissive from envy—apart from that which is the general gloom of all good works, the concupiscence of vainglory?
2:60
But if this be understood piously and holily, let each one of us take up the comparison, so that he may rather condemn himself by setting another above him than justify himself by despising one lesser. So at last he will join the members to one another, especially if—with the one charity, as it were a skin surrounding the bones and the sinews joined to the needy parts—a man conscious of himself may understand that this very grace which he has is a gift not owed, and may rather glory in the Lord on account of that from which he received, than be angry on account of that which he did not receive. For we, when we were by nature children of wrath on account of our offense, were made children of mercy on account of the clemency of the Lord, worthy of nothing but condemnation.
2:61
Let us not bring against the Lord a complaint about what we have not received, but rather for what we have received let us render thanks; let us return glory to him alone, our Creator and Redeemer, the Lord Jesus Christ, whom God set forth as the propitiator in his own blood, that at his name every knee should bow, of things in heaven and on earth and under the earth, whom, judging in that foretold power, all flesh shall see, and to whom every tongue shall confess. Whence the Apostle also says: 'Therefore we strive, whether absent or present, to please him. For we must all be made manifest before the tribunal of Christ, that each one may receive the proper things of the body, according as he has done, whether good or evil'; and elsewhere: 'For we shall all stand before the tribunal of God.'
2:62
Paulus apostolus dixit etiam se staturum ante tribunal Dei et propria corporis prout gessit cum ceteris redditurum; contra autem Pelagius confidenter audet dicere: cita consummo uniuersam in carne perfectionem, ut de iudicis bonitate nihil sperem*. iusti in illa die iudicis operum suorum glorias audientes, adhuc tamen uelut ignorantes, interrogabunt: Domine, quando te uidimus et haec fecimus tibi? et hic noster scientissimus legis agnoscit quo die, qua hora, quo momento ultimam sedem, ultra quam non sit alia plenissimae sanctitatis, intrabit! Aut forsitan reclamat et loquitur:
The apostle Paul said that he too would stand before the tribunal of God and would, with the rest, render account for the proper things of the body according as he had done; yet Pelagius, on the contrary, confidently dares to say: 'Quickly I bring to completion the whole perfection in the flesh, so that from the judge's goodness I hope for nothing.' The righteous, on that day, hearing the glories of their own works from the judge, will nevertheless still, as though unaware, ask: 'Lord, when did we see you and do these things for you?' And this man, our most expert in the law, recognizes on what day, at what hour, in what moment he will enter the final seat, beyond which there is no other of fullest sanctity! Or perhaps he protests and says:
2:63
'Truly,' he says, 'these reproaches of madness, not to say of pride, would be cast upon me, if I said that a man could be without sin apart from any helper; but in fact I affirm the help of God, to whom nothing is difficult. Or do you perhaps deny the help of God?' I grant for a little while your slander, so that, while I seem to expose in myself what I wish to convict in you, we may at the same time be found, I more cleansed in my own defense, and you more manifest in your own confusion. This is ever my faithful and undoubted opinion: that God bestows his help not only within his own body, which is the Church, to which by special

on account of believers' faith bestows the gifts of his grace), but also supplies it to all the nations in this world, on account of his long-suffering and eternal clemency toward himself; not — as you assert together with your disciple Caelestius, whose hidden nature of impious doctrines has already been crushed at the African synod — that one grace is granted generally to all merely in natural good and in free will, but that he ministers it particularly every day, through seasons, through days, through moments, through instants, both to all and to each. For Scripture says: 'Who makes his sun rise upon the good and the evil.' But you perhaps answer: 'Nature, well composed, keeps its own order, and by this God, the elemental courses being once established, brings it about thence, because he made it.'
2:65
What, then, do you think of that part of the sentence which follows: 'He gives rain upon the just and the unjust'? Surely he who gives, gives when he wills and where he wills, either by dispensing an established ordinance or by pouring out his own bounty. And lest, according to the madness of your impiety, you contrive to empty this also of meaning, hear the prophet bearing witness to this truth: 'He who calls the waters of the sea and pours them out upon the face of the earth, the Lord is his name.' But what shall I say of the true hope of the human race, since 'every one who plows, plows in hope'? But to hope is not a matter of one's own capacity, but of another's bounty.
2:66
Diabolus interrogatur a Domino: unde ades? at ille respondit:
And when someone has sown, and the tiller has hidden the scattered seed in the bosom of the earth, he has nothing further to do except to lift up his eyes to heaven, and to pray — not to the earth to which he entrusted the seed, but to God in whom he believed — that he may make his labors fruitful by the early or the late rain. And to enjoy a spiritual testimony even for common uses: 'Neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but God who gives the increase.' How greatly, then, I rejoice in the help of God, measure by this: that I prove it to be ministered, particle by particle, even to the nations; so that it might be manifest to us whom we ought to guard against to the end, and whom we ought to invoke without ceasing. The Devil is questioned by the Lord: 'Whence do you come?' And he answered:
2:67
'Going about the earth and traversing the things that are under heaven, I am present.' I ask you: is this care of the devil one of good will or of evil? You must needs confess: wholly of evil. For this, and his subsequent demand, shows it. This manifestation of the devil took place in the time of Job, that is, in the time of Moses. Surely then there was no Judaea, no Jerusalem, no Church throughout the world. As yet all the Gentile world had no knowledge of God, and yet already the devil, going about the earth, was traversing all things that are under heaven, and was borne, with the unceasing diligence of his malice, to seduce and destroy the human race.
2:68
Iob contradicente aduersario a creatore laudatur.
And so, when you see that against men who were ignorant such great wickedness of the devil pressed down to destroy them, do you believe that no grace of God was at hand to guard them? Or do you perhaps think it was said in vain: 'The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and all who dwell therein'? But indeed, that you may more manifestly prove that the help of God is present both for all things and for each one — behold, the devil himself, while he bears witness about the whole, is questioned about one: 'Have you considered,' says God, 'my servant Job, that there is none like him upon the earth?' The Lord knows each one particularly; the devil knows too — the one by the power of nature, the other by the labor of malice; the one to tempt, the other to approve. Job, while the adversary contradicts, is praised by the Creator.
2:69
The Lord wishes to judge the work of man, which he himself works in him; but indeed even the devil confesses concerning the help. For he says: 'Have you not fenced about the things that are outside his house and within his house?' When the enemy demanded his servant, God despoils him through temptation, but does not strip him bare; he takes away substance and gives grace: 'Behold,' he says, 'all that he has I give into your hand, but do not touch him himself.' This is too little. The envious one rages, attempts to bring in death, but on the contrary is moved by the dispensation of God; grace is not taken away; the prey is permitted to the plunderer that was demanded, and again a guardian is set over his own prey. For it is said to him: 'Behold, I deliver him to you; only preserve his life.'
2:70
Let no one from this suppose that the devil labors only to seduce the soul in the body, unless he were also to tear it from the very body, if the protection of the merciful God did not fortify the wounded and weak man, and did not always meet, in opposition, all the attempts of his snares. You have, as I think, even among the nations a sufficient proof of cooperating grace; receive also a manifest indication of that special gift which he bestows as peculiar to the Church and to his own body. The apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians: 'I give thanks to my God always for you, for the grace of God which is given you in Christ Jesus:'
2:71
'because in everything you are made rich in him, in all utterance and in all knowledge, even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: so that you come short in no grace.' And again: 'Being justified therefore by faith, let us have peace toward God through our Lord Jesus Christ: through whom we have access by faith into this grace, by which we stand and glory.' Whence the apostle Peter also admonishes, saying: 'Receiving the end of your faith, the salvation of souls. Of which salvation the prophets sought and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace of God that should come unto us.' From which it is most evidently declared that to no man is the help of God lacking, especially since both the seducer is at hand and weakness is within.
2:72
The slander of the blind accuser is confounded and emptied, who says: 'Perhaps you deny the help of God?' But since we have made mention of Job, and in the testimony above it was reviewed with the Lord saying 'a man without crime, a true worshiper of God, abstaining from all evil' — for it is very often asserted by us, to prove that a man can be without sin because there has been one, that is, because Job too was called by the testimony of God a man without crime and truthful, and Zacharias is shown in the Gospel to be proved without complaint — : the Lord said of Job 'a man without crime'; did he say 'without sin'? For a thought conceives sin, but only an act displays a crime.
2:73
To be also without complaint is ascribed to the recognition and judgment of those for whom it is ready at hand to behold meekness in the face, but not to know the wars of the heart. Whence Paul also confidently commands, saying: 'For a bishop must be without crime'; and elsewhere he gives a general testimony to the Corinthians and asserts: 'So that you lack in no grace, awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ: who will also confirm you to the end without crime.' Behold, those whom Paul by his testimony confirms to be without crime to the end, soon, in the same epistle, he rebukes, writing: 'Now indeed there is utterly a fault in you, that you have lawsuits among yourselves.'
2:74
Under one heading and concerning the same persons, behold 'without crime,' behold 'a fault': whence he declares that one is not at once to be asserted to be without fault whom you see named as without crime. For the Lord Jesus also said: 'John came neither eating nor drinking.' And again it is written: 'His food was locusts and wild honey.' Is John, on the one account, to be believed not to have eaten, or the Lord to have deceived, on the other? But on the contrary the truth is in both, because John took something for the substance of fleshly food, and again the Lord truly said of John that he ate neither with the rest nor what the rest ate — proving that he and the holy Scriptures often, with the knowledge of God hidden, make manifest the judgments of men.
2:75
Wherefore it is to be reverently understood that, as often as Scripture mentions both 'just' and 'without complaint,' it is said according to the capacity of the time and according to the judgments of men, not according to that final indication of God, to whom the conscience of all is subject and the tongue of all shall confess. Finally, clearly understand that the justification of Job and the permission of his sufferings into the flesh, by the provident counsel of God, wrought the confounding of the arrogant devil; so that, while the man is praised for the honor of the Creator, with the Lord himself approving, the angel, declining the mark of infidelity, might be punished.
2:76
But again, lest he should inflict a more grievous blow upon his servant while healing him, and through care for the flesh inflict a wound on the soul — that is, lest blessed Job, having overcome so great a temptation, with all things doubled and restored, lifted up into pride, should fall into the judgment of the devil — he is admonished from his own hidden things, that even if outwardly he were praised for righteousness, yet inwardly he should know himself to be subject to him by whom he was guarded. For the Lord says to him: 'Who is this that hides counsel from me, keeping words in his heart, and thinks he is hidden from me? Gird your loins like a man. I will question you, and you answer me. Where were you when I founded the earth? Tell me, if you know knowledge.'
2:77
And after much correction by teaching, or teaching by correcting, Job answering the Lord said: 'Why am I judged, being warned and rebuked by the Lord, hearing such things when I am nothing?' Such too was Zacharias, a man without complaint, worthy of the honor of men, worthy of the testimony of the Scriptures, whom, as I think, some inflation from this already tickled, and he began to trust reputation more than conscience; he is convicted of the mark of unbelief through the rebuking angel, and is chastised with a temporary silence. Whence Paul also says: 'And so, let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall.' And, as it were a pattern for men, he himself pronounces concerning himself, saying: 'I chastise my body and bring it into subjection: lest perhaps, when I have preached to others, I myself should become a castaway.'
2:78
Thus, that anyone is called 'without crime' and 'without complaint' is not a testimony of perfection but an example of conduct. But concerning the 'undefiled,' wherever Scripture pronounces — as David says, 'Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord' — I think it handed down by sound doctrine, that truly blessed are those who are undefiled in the way, that is, those walking by perfect faith in the truth, not turning aside by heretical perversity either to the right or to the left. The Way is Christ, who through the Holy Spirit leads to the Father. Therefore he who, without stain and leprosy, and uncorrupted by those whose word creeps like a cancer, hears, believes, and understands the glory of the venerable Trinity, stands blessed in faith and undefiled.
2:79
From which it is also said to Abraham: 'Walk before me and be without stain.' For necessarily Abraham — who believed God, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness; that he might be in him in whom he believed, saw, and rejoiced — is warned to be perfect and without stain, being appointed the father of many nations in faith, and the bosom of the faithful, that we all may be at rest, who hope in God with faithful Abraham. 'Blessed are the undefiled in the way,' it is written; for by faith we walk, not by sight. But indeed, if you wish to hear about the 'undefiled' such as David in prayer seeks, lay aside the vain confidence of your capacity, and, prostrate in prayers, join yourself with the prophet in supplication, weeping likewise and saying: 'Who understands his faults?'
2:80
'Cleanse me from my secret faults, O Lord, and from those of others spare your servant. For if they have not dominion over me, then shall I be undefiled.' Wretched man that I am, when shall I avoid the faults which I do not yet understand? Peter loves Christ and never declines from love; by the testimony of the Lord's love he is now established as the rock of the Church's foundation, now is depraved by the name of Satan. To him who always works one and the same thing, it is now said: 'Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven'; now again it is cast at him: 'You do not savor the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.' The apostle was chosen by loving, and confounded by loving, having sin on account of his excessive love.
2:81
siquidem adnuntianti de passione sua Domino amoris inpatientia dixerat: propitius tibi. esto; Domine; non erit istud tibi. 0 miseriam miserorum! si Petrus in aliquo Christum amando peccauit, delicta quis intellegit? clamat propheta et clamat in Spiritu Sancto, clamat ille, de quo dixerat Dominus manus mea auxiliabitur ei et bracchium meum confortabit eum et nihil proficiet inimicus in eo, et quid clamet adtende: ab occultis meis munda me, Domine.
For indeed, when the Lord announced concerning his Passion, in the impatience of love he had said: 'Be it favorable to you, Lord; this shall not be to you.' O the misery of the wretched! If Peter in any respect sinned by loving Christ, who understands faults? The prophet cries, and cries in the Holy Spirit, he cries of whom the Lord had said: 'My hand shall help him, and my arm shall strengthen him, and the enemy shall profit nothing against him' — and attend to what he cries: 'Cleanse me from my secret faults, O Lord.'
2:82
That David, chosen according to God's heart, he whom God promised would do all his wills, he whom he anointed as king, he whom he endowed with the sanctification of the prophetic spirit, astonished at the creeping-in of sins, cries to the Lord and implores that he be cleansed from his secret faults; and it is said to him by the Lord in another place: 'You shall not build a house to my name, because you are a man of war and have shed blood,' as though by the abolition of all defilements he could not so cleanse him as to prepare one worthy for a worthy work. David is not cleansed even to death, but, his son being preferred to him in the building of the temple, he himself condemns himself; and the Goliath, with his armor-bearer, slanders me, asking why the Lord does not do in him what he never did in any age!
2:83
dicit et Ecclesiastes: nihil sub sole nouum, nec ualet quisquam dicere: ecce hoc recens est; iam enim praecessit in saeculis quae fuerunt ante nos; et nouorum dogmatum instructor adfirmat: potest fieri, quod numquam factum est! non requiras utrum fuerit, quod posse non ambigas. aedificari domum uoluit Deus nomini suo at hoc, ut non nisi innocens et bene inmaculatus exstrueret. duo ad hoc reges cunctis uiribus eliguntur, uterque ad adiutorium; de custodia utrique promittitur. ad Dauid siquidem dicit Deus: neritas mea et miserioordia mea cum eo. de Salomone uero testatur: ipsum elegi mihi in filium, et ego ero ei in patrem. ex his duobus templum Domini unus praeparat, alter aedificat;
傳道者也說:「日光之下並無新事,也無人能說:看哪,這是新的;其實在我們以前的世代早已有了」;而那新教義的教師卻斷言說:「從未行過的事,是可以成就的!你既不疑惑這事能成,就不必查問它是否曾有。」神願意有殿為祂的名建造,但有一個條件,就是惟有無辜、純全無疵的人纔可建造。為此,神竭力揀選了兩位君王,各為幫助;論到保護,向二人都有應許。神對大衛說:「我的信實和慈愛必與他同在。」論到所羅門卻見證說:「我要立他作我的兒子,我要作他的父。」這二人中,一位豫備耶和華的殿,另一位建造;
Ecclesiastes also says: 'Nothing new under the sun, nor is anyone able to say: behold this is recent; for it has already gone before in the ages that were before us'; and the instructor of new doctrines affirms: 'It can come to pass, what has never been done! Do not inquire whether it has been, since you do not doubt that it can be.' God wished a house to be built to his name, but on this condition, that none but an innocent and well-undefiled one should erect it. For this two kings are chosen with all their powers, each for help; concerning protection it is promised to both. For to David God says: 'My truth and my mercy shall be with him.' But concerning Solomon he testifies: 'Him I have chosen for myself as a son, and I shall be to him as a father.' Of these two, one prepares the temple of the Lord, the other builds it;
2:84
the old man prepares, the youth completes. For it is fitting that a holy one should build the holy temple of the Lord. The old man prepares, as I said, but as it were after he ceased to sin; the youth completes, but almost while he had not yet begun to sin. The one sinned before, the other afterward. The one, because of much sin, did not deserve to build; the other, by sinning much, abandoned what he had built. And amid these things the holy ordination wonderfully arranged for itself that, between the two ages, what could not be perpetual in a man, it might find according to the capacity of the time. Each at some time did not sin, yet each could not be without sin: that God may be true, but every man a liar, as it is written; vain are the sons of men, the sons of men are liars in the balances.
2:85
Having indeed the grace and help of God, yet to be without sin neither could David obtain nor Solomon avail to keep; and the son of Jovinian hopes that almighty God, for his own sake and his disciples', should change so great an order of things! And if perchance it has not come to pass, shall he accuse God of impossibility? 'A man can,' he says, 'be without sin, yet with the help of God.' What shall I do? Shall I meanwhile tolerate a new patch joined to an old garment, until a worse rent lays open the falsity of a wretched mending? For I grant that, against the leader of speaking truth, when he has said 'a man can if he will,' he may seem to have said 'a man can with the help of God.'
2:86
Now at last my discourse must be recalled, as it were, to the beginning of my proposition, and, the grief of injury being laid aside for a little while, with reverence of disputing we must return to the loftiness of the Head. For our Head is Christ Jesus, whom, as the Apostle says, 'God set forth as a propitiation through faith in his own blood, for the showing of his righteousness, for the remission of preceding faults, in the forbearance of God, and for the showing of his righteousness at this time, that he himself might be just and the justifier of him who is of the faith of Jesus.' Therefore the propitiator, set forth through faith in his own blood for the showing and pattern of righteousness, is himself the Mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus.
2:87
Of whom John, brought in almost to the very inaccessible light, cries out: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him.' And shortly after, having set forth the truth of the divine work, he adds: 'And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us; and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.' Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth; who, as a lamb before the shearer, so opened not his mouth, when he was scourged, crucified, and died; who tamed the sting of death; who rose from the dead; who, leading captivity captive, ascended into the heavens.
2:88
This is the only-begotten in the Father, the firstborn among many brethren; in whom is all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. This Lord Christ, then, this, I say, Son of God, in the power of the Father and the glory which in the beginning he founded and in the midst redeemed, will also at the last judge. And so, after the founding of the whole creation, which came into being according to his will, he imposed a measure upon the established things, so that what had been made rational should subsist by reason, and what he had endowed with free will, lest it should run out into the license of perdition, he restrained by the law of precept: so that when the creature
2:89
should recognize the Creator and the gift of the Lord, and the stability of the precept, and, having fallen in subjection, looking forward to liberty, should desire to use that very liberty only for this — that through it, deemed worthy by a worthy judgment, it might choose the servitude by which it would be governed; so that from prudent servitude it might merit defense, and from free will it might merit reward, as the Apostle confirms, who says: 'For if I do this willingly, I have a reward.' 'Let there be made two great lights' — almighty God said, and they were made, and he commanded that they should divide the day and the night and be for signs and seasons and days and years.
2:90
Does not this once-decreed distinction continue even to the present day? And yet these very things, which are borne along by so ordered a motion, the power to change them at his will was present in the Creator, if reason did not restrain it: since in all things the reason of God's power is conjoined. For if there were in the Creator a changing of his works, how could the observance of his commandments be expected from the creature? It was commanded by God that the earth should bring forth grass, hay, and the fruit-bearing tree. This even now, in yearly turns, it keeps with unceasing bringing-forth; and yet very often God, being angry, diminishes the fruits of the earth by denying the abundance of rains, and what he could have taken away entirely he preferred to chastise, that both the plague might show correction and nature might keep its order.
2:91
fecit Deus hominem de limo terrae et uitalis spiritus insufflatione uiuentem posuit in paradiso deliciarum, libero insuper donauit arbitrio uinxitque mandato medio inmortalitatis et mortis; quamuis adserant toi, qui abundantiora de pectore tuo uenena suxerunt, mortalem eam fuisse factum nihilque eidem damni ex transgressione contigisse praecepti. at uero praeuaricante homine terra maledicitur, laboribus ac doloribus homo ipse coonustatur, ut in sudore faciei panem adquirat iubetur, nota mortis circumscribitur, donec in terram, de qua sumptus est, reuertatur; eicitur Adam de paradiso, generat filios trahentes secum seminis infidelis originale peccatum; peccat humanum genus;
神用地上的塵土造人,又將生氣吹在他裡面使他成了活的,把他安置在快樂的樂園中;並且賜給他自由意志,用一條誡命將他繫在不死與死的中間;雖然有人斷言(這些人從你胸中吸了更多的毒液)說,他被造原是必死的,並且違背誡命也未使他受甚麼虧損。其實,當人犯罪時,地就受咒詛,人自己也被勞苦愁煩所重壓,他被命定必汗流滿面纔得餬口,被死亡的標記所圈定,直到歸回他所出之土;亞當被趕出樂園,他生兒子,這些兒子隨身帶著不信之種的原罪;人類犯了罪;
God made man of the slime of the earth, and, made living by the in-breathing of the vital spirit, placed him in the paradise of delights; moreover he endowed him with free will and bound him with a command midway between immortality and death; although those assert (who have sucked more abundant venoms from your breast) that he was made mortal and that no harm befell him from the transgression of the precept. But indeed, when man transgressed, the earth is cursed, the man himself is burdened with labors and pains, he is commanded to gain bread in the sweat of his face, he is circumscribed by the mark of death, until he return into the earth from which he was taken; Adam is cast out of paradise, he begets sons drawing with them the original sin of unfaithful seed; the human race sins;
2:92
Deum quoque paenituit quod hominem fecisset in terra. O Domine, sustine paulisper stultitiam meam, donec, qui sibi sapiens et prudens uidetur, erubescat et sentiat inprudentiam! peccante uno homine, ex quo in uniuersam suocessionem dira contagia transierunt regnumque in uniuersos mortis inualuit, paenitet te, irasceris, doles et, usquequo Verbum caro factum passione, cruce ac morte opus habeat, commoueris. forte satius fuerat unum deleri ilico pecoatorem et mox alium secunda plasmatione substitui, quo ab omni sorde libera et inmaculata propago descenderet. an haec te, omnipotens Deus, quia non fecisse agnoscimus, non potuisse credimus?
God too repented that he had made man on the earth. O Lord, bear with my foolishness a little while, until he who seems to himself wise and prudent may blush and perceive his imprudence! When one man sinned, from whom dire contagions passed into the whole succession and the reign of death prevailed over all, you repent, you are angry, you grieve, and you are moved until the Word made flesh has need of suffering, cross, and death. Perhaps it had been better that the one sinner be at once destroyed and another soon be substituted by a second forming, whence a progeny free and undefiled from all filth might descend. Or do we, almighty God, because we acknowledge that you did not do this, believe that you could not?
2:93
O Peter, upon which rock Christ founded his Church, and O Paul, who laid the foundation, besides which no other can anyone lay, which is Christ — blessed apostles, pillars and supports of the truth, do you at least answer this man (who is a counselor to God and a mediator) with sacred discourses! Peter says: 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has regenerated us unto a hope of life through the resurrection from the dead of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto an incorruptible and undefiled inheritance, reserved in heaven for us, who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation prepared to be revealed in the last time.'
2:94
deinde Paulus, uas electionis, profert thesauros salutares et ait: benedictus Deus et pater domini nostri Iesu Christi, qui benedixit nos in omni benedictione spiritali in caelestibus in Christo, sicut elegit nos in ipso ante Mundi eonstitutionem, ut essemus sancti et inmaculati in conspectu eius in caritate, qua praedestinauit nos in adoptionem filiorum per Iesum Christum in ipsum, secundum propositum uoluntatis suae, in laudem gloriae suae, in qua gratificauit nos in dilecto, in quo habemus redemptionem per sanguinem eius, remissionem peccatorum, secundum diuitias gratiae eius, quae superabundauit in nobis in omni sapientia et prudentia:
Then Paul, the vessel of election, brings forth saving treasures and says: 'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in heavenly places in Christ, even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without stain in his sight in charity, in which he predestined us unto the adoption of sons through Jesus Christ unto himself, according to the purpose of his will, unto the praise of his glory, wherein he made us pleasing in the Beloved, in whom we have redemption through his blood, the remission of sins, according to the riches of his grace, which superabounded in us in all wisdom and prudence:'
2:95
'that he might make known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in him, in the dispensation of the fullness of times, to restore all things in Christ, both which are in the heavens and which are on the earth.' Peter says salvation is 'prepared to be revealed in the last time'; Paul too testifies that 'he purposed in him, in the dispensation of the fullness of times, to restore all things in Christ'; and now there emerges to us I-know-not-who, like a frog out of the mire, and croaks loudly: 'What is it to me to await the time, to await the judgment? If God can, he can always: if he can always, he is no respecter of persons!'
2:96
He can, then, and even now he can, and in you he would truly be proved a respecter of persons, if what he can do in all and is assuredly going to do in its own time, he were to do in you alone before the time — which he did not do even in Moses, to whom he reproached only one sin in this life, and yet remitted it before death, whom for this fault he commanded to die so that he should not enter the land of promise. Let him therefore hear Solomon testifying concerning the ordering of times and the constitution of God: 'All things have their time, and all things under heaven pass by their own spaces. A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to pluck up what is planted. A time to kill and a time to heal.' Then in another place he says:
2:97
'I saw under the sun, in the place of judgment impiety, and in the place of righteousness iniquity, and I said in my heart: God will judge the just and the impious, and then shall there be a time for every matter.' Wherefore, O empty man, if you have any confidence, patiently await the order of God, which the Lord himself, who made it, deigned also to await: made under the law, who had made the law. Hear him himself saying to you: 'It is not yours to know the times which the Father has placed in his own power.' Or if you wish to receive the testimony more openly, that although God can, yet for the sake of his own ordinance he does not do it, he says to Peter: 'Do you think that I cannot now ask my Father, and he will furnish me more than twelve legions of angels?'
2:98
'But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be done?' You see, then, that the worker of time tempers his powers, and the reason of his arrangement mingles patience with potency. Then the Lord says: 'Put up the sword into its sheath. For it cannot be that I should not drink the cup which the Father has given me.' And yet there is nothing that God cannot do, nor is there anything that he does not do, except perhaps what he wills not, what is not fitting, what he does not purpose. Paul speaks to the Thessalonians, signifying concerning the coming of Antichrist: 'Do you not remember that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now you know what withholds, that he may be revealed in his own time.'
2:99
So great is the force of God's decree and so irrevocable the state of things constituted in their several causes of times, that for the sake of his elect the Lord said the days of the age would be shortened, not taken away; that he might make a fullness of the appointed times for his majesty, a brevity for his mercy, and at once mercy might take its abridgment and the world fulfill its number.
2:100
And do you now wish — behold, I speak with the grief of mercy — do you, I say, O man like myself, wish that men, in this present time, should answer you that anyone is without sin (a thing nowhere said before to be found in the sacred volumes), and, if perchance they agree to this, should subscribe it as of a day and a moment, while you construct a new engine of slander, so that what we say does not come to pass we may seem to have said cannot come to pass, and in that very thing in which we chiefly proclaim the Omnipotent as working in the arrangement which he established, we may be judged to defame his impotence impatiently? Cast away, I beseech you, your vain fury, since this very thing tends to sin, concerning the wiping away of which you seem to have thought of the possibility of time, not the clemency of the judge.
2:101
Hactenus de potentia Dei, quam praedicamus et colimus, et de praefinitione temporum, quae profundissimo ipsius sunt statuta consilio, dixisse sufficiat; de qua, etsi plura quae sunt sanctorum scripta non essent, daemonum saltim responsio sola sufficeret, qui propria damnati conscientia uociferantur ad . Dominum. quid tibi et nobis, fili Dei ? quid uenisti ante tempus perdere nos? quos cum iQtellegas de constitutione iudicii confitentes, cape certissimum ipsius contra te exemplum. si illos in oppressione miseri hominis conprehensos ultimo tunc iudicio intellegis esse damnatos: accipe et te ipsum hic inperturbabili emundatione purgandum;
關於我們所宣揚並敬拜的神的大能,以及那由祂至深的旨意所定下的時候之預定,至此所說已足。關於這事,即使聖徒們現有的眾多著作並不存在,單單群鬼的回答也已足夠了;牠們被自己的良心所定罪,向主呼喊說:「神的兒子,我們與你有甚麼相干?你來這裡是要在時候未到以前叫我們受苦麼?」你既明白這些鬼乃是在承認那審判的設立,就當從此取出針對你自己最確鑿的鑑戒。倘若你明白那些鬼,當牠們在一個可憐人身上施虐而被捉拿時,已在末後的審判中被定了罪,那麼你也當領受,在此要藉著不可動搖的潔淨而得潔除;
Thus far let it suffice to have spoken of the power of God, which we proclaim and worship, and of that fore-appointing of the times which are fixed by His most profound counsel. Concerning this, even if there were not the many writings of the saints which do exist, the reply of the demons alone would suffice, who, condemned by their own conscience, cry out to the Lord: 'What have we to do with thee, Son of God? Art thou come to destroy us before the time?' Since you understand that these confess concerning the constitution of the judgment, take from this the most certain example against yourself. If you understand that those demons, caught in the oppression of a wretched man, were then condemned at the last judgment, receive also yourself, here to be purged by an unshakable cleansing;
2:102
sin autem, ut legitur, patientia Dei adhuc illis liberum indulget arbitrium: adhuc et te crede temptandum. Nunc ad aliam strictim transeo quaestionem, quam tu aduersus omnes catholicos uibrare saepius diceris. nam etiam in epistula tua illa lucubratissima haec ipsa uel intellegere uix potuimus. ita ista, inquam, ad Demetriadem puellam, ut audio, sacram et sanctam homo uerecundissimus scribere non erubuisti, docens, ut credo, reuerentiam castitatis sub stropha Ioseph et luxuriantis dominae suae, ubi dixisti, contempta frequenter domina propiores adulescenti tendit insidias, secretum ac sine testibus manu inpudens adprehendit, nopportunam historiam obscenissimo sermone contexens;
但若如經上所記,神的忍耐至今仍賜給牠們自由的選擇,那麼也當相信你自己仍是要受試驗的。現在我簡略地轉到另一個問題,據說你常用它來抨擊一切大公信徒。因為即使在你那封極費心思雕琢的書信中,我們也幾乎無法理解這一點。我說,你這極其拘謹的人,竟不羞於將這些話寫給底米特利亞,一個據我所聞已獻身且聖潔的少女,照我想是要藉約瑟與其放蕩女主人的故事來教導對貞潔的敬重;你在那裡說:「那女主人屢遭拒絕,便對那青年設下更近的圈套;在隱密無人作證之處,以無恥之手抓住他」,竟用極其淫穢的言辭織入這段不合宜的故事;
but if, as is written, the patience of God still grants them free choice, then believe that you also are still to be tested. Now I pass briefly to another question, which you are said often to brandish against all the catholics. For even in that most laboriously polished letter of yours we could scarcely understand this very thing. Thus, I say, you, a most bashful man, did not blush to write these things to Demetrias, a girl who, as I hear, is consecrated and holy, teaching, as I believe, reverence for chastity under the figure of Joseph and his wanton mistress, where you said: 'The mistress, often spurned, lays nearer snares for the youth; in a secret place and without witnesses she seizes him with shameless hand,' weaving in an unfitting story with most obscene speech;
2:103
although this thing, which is said neither aptly nor decently, we ought not to impute to you, to whom neither did birth grant that you should be trained in more honorable studies, nor did it come to you by nature that you should be wise, but rather to those dictators of yours, who write down a wretched meaning in most wretched speech and expose you to be read with guffaws, as if a placard of confusion. Among these things, therefore, you belched forth in that same letter, in undigested words, a meaning of this sort: that very many of our people would say that God created the evil nature of man. This too that Phineas of yours tried, step by step, to press upon us; whence I first briefly profess my position, then reply.
2:104
Let him not be worthy to stand at the right hand among the lambs of God before the tribunal of Christ, nor deserve to see the Lord in the land of the living, nor let the life of Jesus be made manifest in his mortal body in the glory of the resurrection — whoever says that God created any evil nature, whether of man or of any other thing, or whoever takes away free choice in anything, when he shall have read what is written: 'All things whatsoever God made are very good.' And concerning the free choice of man it is written: 'God created man imperishable, and left him in the hand of his own counsel.'
2:105
O blind and malicious man — for in no other way can I speak to you, who have neither a sense of the Lord's authority, nor a sense of your own frailty, nor a sense of common understanding — we say that the nature of man is weak, not evil. For if it were evil, it would in no way take hold of the good; but now, since with inborn affection it desires the good and clings to the good and altogether flees the evil, where in it is an evil substance to be said to be? The Lord cries: 'The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.' Abraham cries: 'But I am earth and ashes.' Job cries: 'Man is rottenness, and the son of man a worm.' Isaiah cries: 'O wretched me, for I am pierced with remorse, because, being a man and having unclean lips, I dwell also in the midst of a people having unclean lips.'
2:106
clamat Hieremias: anima in angustiis, et spiritus anxius clamat ad te: uide Domine et miserere. clamat Abacuc: custodini me et expauit uenter meus a uooe orationum et intra me turbata est habitudo mea. clamat Dauid: exaudi me in tua iustitia et non intres in iudicium cum seruo tuo, quia non iustificabitur in conspectu tuo omnis uiuens. clamant omnes apostoli infirmitatis timore turbati: Domine, libera nos, perimus. clamat Iohannes: si dixerimus quoniam peccatum non habemus, ipsi nos seducimus, et ueritas in nobis non est. clamat Iacobus: in multis enim offendimus omnes. clamat Paulus: infelix ego homo, quis me liberabit de corpore mortis huius? gratia Dei per Iesum Christum dominum nostrum.
Jeremiah cries: 'My soul is in straits, and my anxious spirit cries to thee: behold, O Lord, and have mercy.' Habakkuk cries: 'Guard me, for my belly was afraid at the voice of my prayers, and my frame was troubled within me.' David cries: 'Hear me in thy righteousness, and enter not into judgment with thy servant, for in thy sight shall no living man be justified.' All the apostles cry, troubled by the fear of their weakness: 'Lord, save us, we perish.' John cries: 'If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.' James cries: 'For in many things we all offend.' Paul cries: 'O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death? The grace of God through Jesus Christ our Lord.'
2:107
et ut generaliter uniuersorum clamet infirmitas, clamat Spiritus Sanctus in sanctis: omnis caro faenum et gloria hominis sicut flos faeni. faenum. aruit, flos decidit; uerbum autem Domini manet in aeternum. Contra has tam splendidas perspicuasque diuinorum nubes testimoniorum audiat laborans in gemitu suo mundus uniuersus Pelagium reclamantem atque humili ueritati non solum uerborum inpudentia sed etiam scriptorum cauteribus resistentem. ait enim in epistula, quam supra nominauimus: uerum e contrario remisso ac fastidioso animo superborum ac nequam seruorum more in os Domini reclamamus, et dicimus \'durum est, arduum est, non possumus;
為使眾人的軟弱一同呼喊,聖靈也在眾聖徒裡呼喊說:「凡有血氣的盡都如草,他的榮美都像草上的花。草必枯乾,花必凋謝,惟有主的話永遠長存。」面對這些如此輝煌明亮的神聖見證之雲彩,願在歎息中勞苦的全世界都聽見伯拉糾如何反唇相譏,不僅以言語的厚顏、更以文字的烙印抵擋這謙卑的真理。因為他在我們上面提及的那封信中說:「然而我們卻反倒以懈怠厭煩的心,照著驕傲無用之僕的樣式,向主的口頂撞回去,說:『難哪,艱難哪,我們不能;
And that the weakness of all in general may cry out, the Holy Spirit cries in the saints: 'All flesh is grass, and the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass is withered, the flower is fallen; but the word of the Lord abides forever.' Against these so splendid and clear clouds of the divine testimonies, let the whole world, laboring in its groaning, hear Pelagius crying out in contradiction, and resisting the humble truth not only with the impudence of his words but also with the brands of his writings. For he says in the letter which we named above: 'But on the contrary, with slack and disdainful spirit, after the manner of proud and worthless servants, we cry back against the mouth of the Lord, and say: It is hard, it is arduous, we cannot;

homines sumus, fragili carne circumdamur\' eto caecam insaniam! — eto profanam temeritatem!
we are men, we are surrounded by frail flesh' — and, O blind madness! and, O profane rashness! — we accuse the Lord of knowledge of a twofold ignorance, so that He should seem not to know what He made, not to know what He commanded, and, as if forgetful of human frailty, of which He Himself is the author, to have laid upon man what man cannot bear. What, I ask, is more deadly than this presumption? What more perverse than this reproach? You reproach the catholic Church, whose members we are, that she seems as it were to speak in despair, namely, that God the author of man laid upon man what he cannot bear:

yet most faithful is her profession, both in mouth and in humility, that God first commanded all things as possible, and yet — since no one fulfills those possible things, on which account the whole world becomes subject to God — afterward lightened the weight of the commandment by the indulgence of grace substituted in its place. Nevertheless thou, wicked and malicious servant, who strivest to exact from thy fellow servants what thy lord remitted to thee — first I examine thy own meaning, and afterward, if it seem good, I explain my own. Thou who chargest that certain men have said the burden of the law cannot be borne — dost thou then trust that thou thyself canst bear it? O wretched man, who, according to what is written, sayest in thy heart:
2:110
'I am rich and have grown wealthy and have need of nothing,' and knowest not that thou art wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. Did Christ ever say to thee, 'Verily I say to thee, flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven'? Did He ever say to thee, 'Thou shalt be called Cephas'? Did He ever promise thee, 'Upon this rock I will found my Church'? For attend to what the apostle Peter, taught by the Holy Spirit, admonishes, who says: 'Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we ourselves were able to bear? But by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ we believe that we shall be saved, even as they.'
2:111
The apostle Peter says that he truly tempts God who now contrives to lay the burden of the law upon man; but you, on the contrary, object and threaten that he accuses God of injustice who, through the confession of his own weakness, flees to the grace of the Spirit from the letter that kills. Samuel, Elijah, Elisha, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Zechariah, all the saints, whether judges or kings or prophets, are without doubt our fathers; and Peter affirms that none of the fathers, nor even they themselves — that is, the apostles, when they were Jews — were able to bear the burden of the law, but were saved by faith in Christ according to the hope of grace. Or perhaps, according to you, all these holy fathers had not the help of God?
2:112
Behold, Peter rebukes those who tried to lay the yoke upon the neck of the disciples; you, on the contrary, to the scandal of Peter, rebuke those who flee to the faithful mercy of God and distrust that by themselves they can bear the burden of the law. But you perhaps have a special confidence in carrying the burden, because, nourished by baths and banquets, you bear broad shoulders and a sturdy neck, displaying even on your brow your fatness, as it is written: 'For he stretched out his hand against God and was strengthened against the Almighty. He ran against him with neck erect and was armed with a fat neck. Fatness covered his face, and grease hangs down from his flanks.'
2:113
But such as these cannot be, those to whom Christ ever speaks in the heart: 'Strive to enter by the narrow way; for wide is the way that leads to death.' And the apostle Paul admonishes: 'Make not provision for the flesh in its lusts.' The truth of Christ is in me, for I grieve much for us. For according to the saying of my blessed father Augustine, it is not the confidence of a healthy man but of a sick one. Concerning one and the same first precept I question you, if you deign. In the law the Lord commands through Moses, which Christ also affirms in the Gospels: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart and with thy whole soul and with all thy strength; and the second like to it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.'
2:114
I beg you, answer not me but God, not with your voice but with your conscience: whether you so love God with your whole heart that you never admit in it any thought which could be understood apart from the fear and love of God; whether you so follow Him with your whole soul that, having once taken up the cross, you yield to no delight at all, with any momentary pleasure indulged; whether you so burn in all your inward parts with the heat of charity that you yield not at all, through pretexts of necessity, to weak lusts or desires; then, since it is written:
2:115
omne quod non sit ex fide peccatum sit et siue nobilium locorum episcopos uideris sine potentes saeculi uiros siue diuites sub religione uideas, utrum omnino nihil uel adulationi uel timeri uel spei acceptione personarum captus indulgeas nec quicquam in quo te cor tuum reprehendat et conscientia remordeat, uel si nulla uerba tempori potius quam neritati adcommodata respondeas. illud etiam consulo: utrum aeque omnes Christianos siout te ipsum diligis? nos enim sub uno capite, quod est Christus, et sub una Ecclesia, quae est, Christus, omnes fratres sumus et unum corpus in Christo. utrum ergo sicut te ipsum diligas omnes, qui misericordiam Dei sperant, quos tamen noueris, confitere;
「凡不出於信的,都是罪」──你是否在見到顯赫之地的主教、或看見世上有權勢的人、或宗教身分下的富戶時,毫不被諂媚、懼怕或盼望所擄、毫不徇情面而有所放縱,也毫不容你的心責備你、良心刺痛你,也不曾說出任何遷就時勢過於遷就真理的話。我還要問這事:你是否同等地愛眾基督徒如同愛你自己?因為我們在一位元首之下,就是基督,又在一個教會之下,就是基督,都是弟兄,在基督裡同為一身。那麼你是否愛一切指望神憐憫的人,至少是你所認識的,如同愛你自己──請你承認;
'Everything that is not of faith is sin' — and whether, when you see bishops of noble places, or behold mighty men of the world, or rich men under religious profession, you indulge nothing at all, captivated either by flattery or by fear or by hope in the acceptance of persons, nor anything in which your own heart should reprove you and your conscience sting you, nor whether you answer any words accommodated to the occasion rather than to the truth. This too I ask: whether you love all Christians equally as yourself? For we, under one head, which is Christ, and under one Church, which is Christ, are all brothers and one body in Christ. Whether therefore you love as yourself all who hope in the mercy of God, those at least whom you know — confess;
2:116
for I do not ask you concerning those unknown to you, whom you suppose you love on this account, that, because you do not know them, you do not hate them. But why do I exact these things from your confession, when the common people recognize your manner of life? You, perfect without weakness; you, able to bear the whole pack of the law; you, I say, O man puffed up but empty, hear, if you deign, the Lord and Savior calling you back — if at least you are able — to holy things: 'Verily I say unto you, whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, shall not enter into it.' The infant has nothing in itself except that it loves the one who caresses it, and that, hoping for its bread not in its own sweat but in entreaties, it obtains the nourishment of life by simple petition, which it does not earn by confident work:
2:117
by which comparison admonished, turn to infancy, that you may return to life. And since I said above, concerning the possibility of sustaining the burden, 'I examine your own meaning first, and afterward, if it seem good, I explain my own' — my opinion is that in this too we sin, who, when we are weak, complain of our weakness, even as the apostle says: 'Doth the thing formed say to him who formed it, Why hast thou formed me thus?' For the complaint of weakness is the ambition of one's own virtue, since he secretly disdains the help of God who seeks a strength peculiarly his own. And this is the devil, who says, 'I will do it by my own strength.' But I, according to the apostle, will glory always in my weaknesses, that my heart may ever say to God:
2:118
'In the covering of thy wings I will exult; my soul hath cleaved after thee; thy right hand hath upheld me.' Whence also it is written: 'Let your requests be made known before God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, keep your hearts and bodies in Christ Jesus.' I have therefore weakness, and I rejoice in the knowledge of my weakness. For when I am weak, then am I strong, by invoking the mighty God, who hears me in my weakness, who most faithfully promised us: 'But I am with you all the days, even unto the consummation of the age.' It is the peculiar work of weakness to pray always in every place, that the almighty God, who pledged Himself not to forsake, may also not cease to help. For behold, Scripture cries to the weak:
2:119
quaerite Dominum et confirmamini quaerite faciem eius semper, cui respondit pia. at uera. confessio : ecce sicut oculi seruerum in manibus Dominorum suorum, ita oculi nostri ad Dominum Deum nostrum donec misereatur nobis s. magna et qerta est 4e perfectione fiducia, cum omnipotens facit quod optat infimus, rursusque magna et certa est de confirmatione securitas, cum omnipotens seruat nec perdit infirmos; sicut scriptum est: ei autem, qui pote$t omnia abundantius facere quam petimus et intellegimus, secundum uirtutem quam operatur in nobis: ipsi gloria in Christo Iesu. quamobrem. admonet apostolus: quae sursum. sunt sapite, non quae super terram;
「你們要尋求耶和華,便得堅固;要時常尋求他的面。」對此,敬虔而真實的承認回應說:「看哪,僕人的眼睛怎樣望主人的手,我們的眼睛也照樣仰望耶和華我們的神,直到他憐憫我們。」論到成全,有偉大確實的信心,就是當全能者成就那卑微者所願的;又論到堅固,有偉大確實的把握,就是當全能者保守軟弱的人、不丟棄他們;正如經上所記:「神能照著運行在我們心裡的大能,充充足足地成就一切,超過我們所求所想的,願他在基督耶穌裡得著榮耀。」因此使徒勸誡說:「你們要思念上面的事,不要思念地上的事;
'Seek the Lord and be strengthened; seek his face always.' To whom a pious and true confession replies: 'Behold, as the eyes of servants are upon the hands of their masters, so are our eyes unto the Lord our God, until he have mercy upon us.' Great and certain is the confidence concerning perfection, when the Almighty does what the lowliest desires; and again, great and certain is the security concerning confirmation, when the Almighty preserves and does not lose the weak; as it is written: 'But to him who is able to do all things more abundantly than we ask or understand, according to the power that works in us, to him be glory in Christ Jesus.' Wherefore the apostle admonishes: 'Mind the things that are above, not the things that are upon the earth;
2:120
for you are dead, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, shall appear, then shall you also appear with him in glory.' The fruit of life is holiness, and holiness indeed is to be without sin. If therefore the glory of incorruption is hidden from all men in this time, how do you in this same time boast that you can be clothed over with that very incorruption of glory? For as the beginning of corruption was for man to turn aside into sin, so the beginning of incorruption will be to have no sin. Who then has hidden that glory before the judgment of God, or stolen it from the bosom of Christ and handed it to you? Or do you perhaps understand that you do not deserve it in the future from the hand of the Lord?
2:121
Paul instructs us in these expectations and says: 'But when this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting? Now the sting of death is sin.' By which the apostle shows that in no way can anyone exult over death and sin until immortality follows mortality and incorruption follows corruption, and where, weakness being destroyed, perfect virtue succeeds, where there shall not be male and female, but all shall be like the angels of God.
2:122
Furthermore, if anyone now grows up to so great a height of holiness that, while living in this flesh, he knows not whether he is male or female; if, having received the fullest purity of himself, and having garments not defiled, he is like the angels of God; and if he is now girt about with that brightness of the splendor of the sun which is promised to the saints — then let him worthily profess this perfection, not by voice but by his very condition. Yet this presumption is perdition; nay rather it is expedient for such a man that he hear and follow not his own heart but Paul, the teacher of the nations, and at the same time pray with him, to whom as he prayed the Lord replied: 'My grace is sufficient for thee; for virtue is perfected in weakness.'
2:123
Itaque, quod solum et in quo solo liberum arbitrium pro- Scit, praebeat se unusquisque nostrum Deo terram uoluntariam: Dei enim agricultura sumus; Dei aedificatio sumus. mittat in agrum suum semen uerbum, credat in corde, ipse plantet, ipse riget, ipse fecundet, ipse tribuat incrementum, qui est uerus agricola. quod solum tamen in nobis pobest uoluntaria deuotio, ad continendam in se radioem seminis et . nutriendos uberes partus fideliter subministret semperque orationibus suis agricolam suum, ne inimicus zizania superseminare possit, exsuscitet. haec sit eius in opere Dei co* operatio, cum spe non dubia et caritate sincera. ait enim Dominus Iesus: ego sum uitis, uos estis palmites:
Therefore — what alone, and in which alone, free choice avails — let each one of us offer himself to God as willing soil; for we are God's husbandry, we are God's building. Let the true husbandman cast into His own field His seed, the word; let Him believe in the heart, let Him plant, let Him water, let Him make fruitful, let Him give the increase. Yet what alone our voluntary devotion can do in us is to minister faithfully to the holding in itself of the root of the seed and to the nourishing of abundant offspring, and ever by its prayers to rouse up its husbandman, lest the enemy be able to oversow tares. Let this be its cooperation in the work of God, with hope not doubtful and charity sincere. For the Lord Jesus says: 'I am the vine, you are the branches':
2:124
whatever it has, it has from the vine. 'For not thou,' says the apostle, 'bearest the root, but the root thee.' Why then does it exalt itself in the fruits which seem to be in it, when the whole pertains to the vine, not only that it can, but even that it is? Otherwise it is cut off and cast into the fire. For not the branch but the vine has power, and what the vine has power to do, the branch displays. It is enough therefore for each one that he have; but whence and where he has it, let him both humbly acknowledge and patiently await, lest, while he has not and believes himself to have, that very thing which he has be taken away from him. The first man, sinning, God cast out of paradise; then the first man believing on the cross Christ led into paradise.
2:125
Rightly therefore, so long as I am not in paradise and remain in the land of Adam's pilgrimage, I do not believe myself to be without sin. But if I shall have been led over into paradise by the grace of God, there, my perfection accomplished and death overcome and sin destroyed, I shall proclaim the eternal glory of His power in the sight of God. These things I have set forth as I could, most blessed priests, for the cause of faith and simplicity. Let not those who have been hurt be angry with me, if in anything they are noted by comparisons of names. As for the questions, let them bear it with equanimity, and rather, if they have the fear of God, let them rejoice that what is true has been answered.
2:126
I, with Jesus Christ as my witness, confess that I hate the heresy, not the heretic; but, as is just, meanwhile, on account of the heresy, I shun the heretic, because I have both tested and rebuked him. Let him detest and condemn it, alike with mouth and hand, and he shall cling to all by the bond of brotherhood, because it is written: 'Bear one another's burdens, and so shall you fulfill the law of Christ.'
