2:73
If now in this present time: he shows that it had been done thus before in Israel also, that a remnant—that is, a small portion—should be saved. But if neither faith nor reason persuades faith that it was the one who was promised, of whom it was said: If thou hadst hearkened to Me, O Israel, thy number would have been as the sand of the sea (Isa. xlviii, 18). And Jacob, who before he was born was given, was himself afterward, by free will, rejected. As Hosea says: The judgment of the Lord is against Judah, to take vengeance on Jacob; according to his ways, and according to his pursuits, He will repay him (Hos. xii, 2): because in the womb he supplanted his brother, and in his labors he prevailed with God, and prevailed with the angel, and was made mighty (Gen. xxv, 26; Rom. ix, 10).
2:74
But if it is agreed that in Jacob the beloved was brought to completion, then the one who in his labors prevailed with God is not the same as the supplanter, but they are two in one body. For it is a figure of the twofold seed of Abraham—that is, of two peoples wrestling in the one womb of mother Church. The one is, according to the election from foreknowledge, the beloved; the other, by the election of his own will, is wicked. But Jacob and Esau are in one body, from one seed. Yet the fact that they were plainly born as two is a manifestation of the two peoples. And lest anyone should think that the two peoples were thus plainly to be separated, it was shown that both were to be in one body in Jacob, who was both called beloved and expressed as the supplanter of his brother.
2:75
And so, in the two, quantity was expressed, not the quality of separation. Moreover, both who are separated, being destined to be in one, were shown before they were divided. And to Isaac it is said: Thy brother came with guile, and took thy blessing (Gen. xxvii, 35). Unless this is a mystical manner of speech, briefly showing two in one body, is it not contrary to reason that he should have received the blessing toward his neighbor by guile, when the Scripture says: He who has not sworn to his neighbor in guile, this one shall receive a blessing from the Lord (Ps. xxiii, 4)? But Jacob—that is, the Church—never came to the blessing without guile accompanying it, that is, without false brethren.
2:76
But not, because innocence and guile come together to the blessing, are they blessed together: for he who can grasp it, let him grasp it (Matt. xix, 12), and the one seed springs up according to the quality of the soil. Nor is it contrary that the evil of the brethren seems to have supplanted, since he did not say: In the womb he supplanted Esau, but his brother. But Esau is everywhere the sign and the name of the wicked; Jacob, however, is of both: for this reason, that the evil part feigns itself to be Jacob, and without doubt under one name; but the good part cannot feign itself to be Esau. This name belongs to the wicked only; but that one is twofold. As for the rest, by free will, neither is all the seed of Jacob good, nor all of Esau evil, but from each is each.
2:77
Ex Abraham ita bipartitum semen osten- sum est. Natum est unum ex ancilla in figura ( Gal . iv , 22) (??) ut ostenderetur etiam servos futuros ex Abraham, et recessit cum sua matre. Postquam vero recessit, inventum est in alterius semine, quod est ex libera, quod est ex Israel, qui accepit legem in monte Sina, quod est Agar in servitute generans. Illic in eodem populo secundum Isaac ex libera promis- sionis filii, id est, sancti et fideles multi procreati sunt. Separatis itaque a credentibus figuris Israel et Esau, in uno populo totum postmodum provenit. Illic ab origine utrumque testamentum Agar et Isaac;
從亞伯拉罕那雙重的後裔就如此顯明出來。一個是由使女所生,作為豫表(加四22),好顯明從亞伯拉罕也要出奴僕,他便同他母親離去了。但在他離去之後,他卻在另一後裔中被尋見,就是那由自主婦人所生的,是出於以色列的——以色列在西乃山領受了律法,這就是夏甲,生子為奴。在那裡,在同一民族中,照著以撒、由自主婦人,那應許的兒女——就是聖徒和許多信徒——被生出來。這樣,以色列與以掃的豫表既與信徒分開,全部後來就在一個民族中出現。在那裡,從起初就有夏甲與以撒這兩約;
From Abraham the twofold seed was thus shown. One was born of the bondwoman as a figure (Gal. iv, 22), so that it might be shown that there would be slaves also from Abraham, and he departed with his mother. But after he departed, he was found in the other seed, which is from the free woman, which is from Israel, who received the law on Mount Sinai—which is Hagar, bearing children into bondage. There, in the same people, according to Isaac, from the free woman, the children of the promise—that is, the saints and the many faithful—were begotten. And so, with the figures of Israel and of Esau separated from the believers, the whole afterward came forth in one people. There, from the beginning, were both covenants, Hagar and Isaac;
2:78
but for a time the one lay hidden under the name of the other, and still lies hidden, because not even when the new is revealed does the old cease begetting. He did not, therefore, say, Hagar, who bears into bondage. But it is fitting that both grow together until the harvest. As, therefore, then under the profession of the Old Testament the new lay hidden—that is, grace, which according to Isaac would beget the children of the promise from the free woman, which was revealed in Christ—so also now, with the new prevailing, the children of bondage are not lacking, with Hagar begetting, which shall be revealed in Christ. The Apostle confirms that the same thing is now also carried on among the brethren which was then carried on among those people, saying: But you, brethren, according to Isaac, are the children of the promise.
2:79
But just as then he who was born according to the flesh persecuted the spiritual, so also now (ibid., 28, 29). And he necessarily added: but what does the Scripture say? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the free woman (ibid., 30). And what he said, just as then he persecuted, so also now, is not without meaning. For the Apostle interpreted persecuted. For the Scripture says: Ishmael was playing with Isaac (Gen. xxi, 9). Were not the brethren who were preaching circumcision to the Galatians openly persecuting them—and not through play, that is, without any sign of persecution? As, therefore, he called a persecutor one of the playful kind:
2:80
ita et istos, qui Filios Dei, velut per communem utilitatem, id est, disciplinam legis, a Christo separare, et matri suae Agar, filios militant. Alia enim non est causa, qua filii diaboli irrepant, ad explorandam libertatem nostram, et simulent se fratres, et in Paradiso nos- tro velut Dei filios ludere : quam de subacta liber- tate filiorum Dei glorientur, qui portabunt judicium, qualescumque illi fuerint, qui omnem sanctum per- secuti sunt, qui prophetas occiderunt, qui semper Spiritui sancto restiterunt;
照樣,這些人也是如此,他們彷彿是為了公共的益處——就是律法的管教——竭力要把神的兒子從基督分開,並要把他們收編為他們自己母親夏甲的兒子。因為魔鬼之子潛入,乃是別無緣故,只為窺探我們的自由,假冒自己為弟兄,並在我們的樂園中彷彿神的兒子那樣戲笑:無非是要誇耀他們已制伏了神兒子的自由。這些人將要受審判,無論他們是何等人,就是那逼迫一切聖徒、殺害先知、始終抗拒聖靈的人;
so also these, who, as though for the common benefit—that is, the discipline of the law—fight to separate the sons of God from Christ, and to enlist them as sons for their own mother Hagar. For there is no other cause for which the sons of the devil creep in, to test out our liberty, and to feign themselves brethren, and to play in our Paradise as though sons of God: than that they might glory over the subdued liberty of the sons of God—they who shall bear the judgment, whatever sort they may have been, who have persecuted every holy one, who have slain the prophets, who have always resisted the Holy Spirit;
2:81
inimici crucis Christi, negantes Christum in carne, dum ejus membra oderunt, corpus peccati, filii exterminii, ministe- rium facinoris, qui veniunt secundum operationem Satanae in omni virtute, signis et prodigiis, spiri- tualia nequitiae in coelestibus : quos Dominus Chris- tus, quem in carne persequuntur, interficiet spiritu oris sui, et destruet manifestatione adventus sui. Tempus est enim, quod haec non a ministeriis , sed aperte dicantur, imminente discessione, quod est revelatio hominis peccati, discedente Lot a Sodomis. De specie et genere. Lux allata Ezechiel , capp. xxvii et xxxii et xxxvi et xxxvii , Isai . xiii et xxiv , Hierem . xxv .
They are enemies of the cross of Christ, denying Christ in the flesh; for while they hate His members, they are the body of sin, the sons of perdition, the ministry of wickedness, who come according to the working of Satan with all power, signs, and lying wonders — the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. These the Lord Christ, whom they persecute in the flesh, shall slay with the breath of His mouth and destroy by the manifestation of His coming. For the time has come when these things should be spoken not by figures but openly, since the departure is at hand, which is the revealing of the man of sin, when Lot departs from Sodom. Concerning species and genus. Light is brought from Ezekiel, chapters 27 and 32 and 36 and 37, Isaiah 13 and 24, Jeremiah 25.
2:82
We speak of species and genus, not according to the rhetorical power of human wisdom — which He who could do so more than all men did not use, lest He make the cross of Christ void, had He, like falsehood, needed the aid and adornment of speech. Rather we speak according to the mysteries of heavenly wisdom under the teaching of the Holy Spirit, who, having established faith in the mystery as the price of truth, declared the genus while hiding it within a species — so that in the old Jerusalem He might take up the whole Church that now exists throughout the world, or in a single member the whole body, as in Solomon. But this is no less hidden than the other things which are concealed not only by the species of a word but also by manifold narration.
2:83
Wherefore, having asked God's grace for aid, we must labour that the Spirit may multiply for us the avenues of reading, and that the subtle eloquence — which, as a hindrance to understanding, inserts genus into species or species into genus — may, so that genus be not species, easily be discerned. For while it narrates the species, it so passes over into the genus that the transition does not at once appear clearly; but in passing it sets down such words as fit both, until little by little it exceeds the measure of the species and makes the transition plain, when the things that had begun with the species fit nothing but the genus; and in the same way it leaves the genus, returning to the species. But sometimes it returns from species to genus not in the manner described above.
2:84
Sometimes it passes over in the aforesaid manner and returns plainly with a like variety of order; or it ends the narration either from species into genus, or from genus into species. Sometimes it returns from this to that more than once; and the whole narration neither exceeds the species nor passes beyond the genus, fitting both. This variety of transposition and order demands faith, which must seek the grace of God. So the Lord speaks through Ezekiel, and to the kings of those who had been taken captive from Jerusalem and scattered He joins the coming of the nations, and in the land which our fathers possessed He expresses the world. For the seven nations promised to Abraham are a figure of all the nations. 'The word of the Lord came to me,' He says, 'saying:'
2:85
'Son of man, the house of Israel dwelt in the land, and they defiled it by their way and by their idols and their sins; their way was before My face like the uncleanness of a menstruous woman. And I poured out My wrath upon them, and scattered them among the nations into which they had entered, and there they profaned My holy name; for it was said of them, These are the people of the Lord, yet they have gone forth out of His land. And I had pity for the sake of My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations into which they had entered. Therefore say to the house of Israel: Thus says the Lord: It is not for your sakes that I do this, O house of Israel, but for the sake of My holy name which you profaned among the nations into the midst of which you entered.'
2:86
There He begins to join the genus: 'And I will sanctify My name, that great holy name which has been profaned among the nations, which you profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord, when I am sanctified in you before their eyes. And I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all the lands, and bring you into your own land.' Plainly He exceeds the species: 'And I will sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be cleansed from all your idols; and I will cleanse you, and give you a new heart, and a new spirit will I put within you, and I will take away the heart of stone out of your flesh; and I will give you a heart of flesh, and put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes and keep My judgments and do them.'
2:87
'And you shall dwell in the land which I gave to your fathers. And you shall be My people, and I will be your God; and I will cleanse you from all your uncleannesses' (Ezek. 36:17, 28). He touches upon the species, yet without leaving the genus: 'And I will call for the grain and multiply it, and I will lay no famine upon you, and I will multiply the fruit of the tree and the produce of the field; that you may receive no more the reproach of famine among the nations. And you shall remember your evil ways, and your thoughts that were not good, and you shall loathe them before their face for your iniquities and their abominations. Not for your sakes do I act, says the Lord. Be it known to you: be confounded, and turn back from your ways, O house of Israel.'
2:88
Thus says the Lord Adonai: In the day when I cleanse you from all your iniquities, and make the cities to be inhabited again — in figure, the land of Judah, which had been laid waste by wars, shall be tilled, because it was made desolate before the eyes of all that passed by. And they shall say, This land that had been laid desolate has become like the garden of delights; and the cities that were deserted and ruined and demolished are fortified and inhabited. And the nations, whatever be left round about you, shall know that I am the Lord. I have built up the things that were demolished, and planted the things laid waste; for I the Lord have spoken it and done it (Ibid. 29, 36).
2:89
The Apostle too interprets that the entrance of the nations was promised in the entry of Jacob, saying thus: 'Until the fullness of the nations come in, and so all Israel shall be saved, as it is written: There shall come out of Zion He who delivers, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob' (Rom. 11:25, 26). And by the same kind of speech he returns to the species, saying: 'According to the gospel indeed they are enemies for your sake.' Likewise in Ezekiel He begins from the species, which fits also into the genus, and ends in the genus alone, showing that the land of the fathers is the possession of the world: 'Thus says the Lord:'
2:90
Aperte transit in genus :
Behold, I will take the whole house of Israel from among the nations into which they entered, and gather them from all that are round about them, and bring them into the land of Israel; and one prince shall be over them. And they shall no longer be two nations, nor be divided any more into two kingdoms; that they may not defile themselves any more with their idols. And I will deliver them from all their iniquities in which they sinned, and I will cleanse them; and they shall be My people, and I the Lord will be their God (Ezek. 37:21, 23). Plainly He passes over into the genus:
2:91
And My servant David shall be prince in their midst, one Shepherd of all, who shall walk in My precepts and keep My judgments and do them; and they shall dwell in their own land which I gave to My servant Jacob, where their fathers dwelt; and they themselves shall dwell in it, and David My servant shall be their prince for ever. And I will make for them a covenant of peace, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set My sanctuary in their midst for ever, and My dwelling shall be among them; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And the nations shall know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them, while My holy things are in their midst, says the Lord (Ibid. 24, 28).
2:92
Rem illic egressui disper- sionis Israel, gentium inserit adventum.
There, into the matter of the going-forth from the dispersion of Israel, He inserts the coming of the nations. It is made manifest that the wilderness was a figure of the people in the desert, in which the Church now is; and that those same evil ones, although they be called back together with the people of God from among the nations into the land of Israel, nevertheless are not in the land. As I live, says the Lord, I will not answer you, even if this thought has come up into your heart; and it shall not be as you say: We shall be like the nations, and like the tribes of the earth, to serve wood and stones.
2:93
As I live, says the Lord, surely with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and with poured-out fury will I reign over you. And I will bring you out from the peoples, and gather you from the regions into which you were scattered, with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm and poured-out fury; and I will bring you into the wilderness of the peoples, and there I will plead with you face to face. As I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I judge you, says the Lord; and I will bring you under My rod, and bring you into the bond of the covenant. And I will purge out from among you the impious and the rebels; for I will lead them out of their sojourning, but they shall not enter into the land of Israel; and you shall know that I am the Lord (Ezek. 20:31, 38).
2:94
Likewise to that captivity of the mountains of Israel God promises fruitfulness and the multiplication of peoples unto the end: 'Because,' He says, 'they gave your land into possession for themselves with rejoicing, dishonouring souls, and made it desolate into waste — therefore, prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains and the hills, to the streams and the woods: Thus says the Lord: Behold, I have spoken in My zeal and in My wrath, because you have borne the reproach of the nations. Behold, I will lift up My hand against the nations that are round about you. These shall receive their own injury; but your mountains, O Israel, shall yield their cluster and their fruit; My people shall eat it, who draw near to come.'
2:95
For behold, I am for you, and you shall be tilled and sown; and I will multiply upon you the whole house of Israel unto the end; and the cities shall be inhabited, and the places that were desolate shall be built up (Ezek. 36:8, 10). Likewise there, as in the last resurrection, the first is signified: 'He spoke to me,' he says, 'saying: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They themselves say: Our bones are become dry, our hope has perished, we are cut off. Therefore prophesy and say: Thus says the Lord:'
2:96
Behold, I will open your graves, and bring you up out of your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel; and you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your sepulchres and bring up My people out of their graves. And I will put My Spirit within you, and you shall live; and I will set you upon your own land, and you shall know that I am the Lord (Ezek. 37:11, 14). Shall we then plainly know the Lord only when we have risen, and not now, when we rise through baptism? Or can the dead say: Our bones are become dry (Ibid. 11), so that we should rightly believe this was promised to the dead? For what there was of the mystery, lest it come into doubt, God laid open.
2:97
Sicut enim habet Pater vitam in se : sic dedit Filio vitam habere in semetipso.
For concerning the last resurrection of the flesh, we believe that no Christian doubts. And the Lord according to John manifests these resurrections, saying: 'Amen I say to you, that he who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life, and shall not come into judgment, but shall pass from death to life. Amen I say to you, that the hour comes and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God; and they that hear shall live. For as the Father has life in Himself, so has He given to the Son to have life in Himself. And He has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man' (John 5:24, 27). He joins the last resurrection: 'Marvel not at this:'
2:98
for the hour comes in which all who are in the graves shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they who did good shall come forth unto the resurrection of life, but they who did evil unto the resurrection of judgment (Ibid. 28, 29). First He said, the dead who hear shall live; secondly, all who are in the graves shall come forth. Likewise, that in one man the whole body is signified, God promises David in the book of Kings, speaking of Solomon: 'I will raise up his kingdom; he shall build Me a house' (2 Sam. 7:13). These things agree; but He exceeds the species, saying: 'And I will establish his throne for ever.' Again, fitting both: 'I will be to him a father, and he shall be to Me a son.'
2:99
And if his iniquity come, I will reprove him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; but My mercy I will not take from him, as I took it from those whom I removed from My sight; and his house shall be made faithful. Again He exceeds the species: and his kingdom for ever in My sight, and his throne shall be established for ever (Ibid. 14, 16). But that which seems, in the going beyond the species, to promise the throne of Christ for ever, promises the throne of the Son of man, and so the Body of Christ, that is, of the Church. For it was not for David's sake that God promised that Christ should reign — Christ to whom, before the foundation of the world, He promised this glory.
2:100
And through Isaiah God thus speaks to Christ: 'This shall be a great thing for you: that you be called My servant, and establish the tribes of Jacob, and turn back the dispersion of Israel. Behold, I have set you for a covenant of the race, for a light of the nations, that you may be for salvation unto the uttermost part of the earth' (Isa. 49:6). What greater thing is it for the Son of God to be called 'My servant,' and to turn back the dispersion of Israel, or that through Him Israel itself, and heaven and earth, and the things visible and invisible in them, were made? But He told him it was a great thing — to Him who as Son of God was mingled with the seed of David.
2:101
For every promise to Abraham and David is itself this: that for the sake of their seed He would have mercy on Him to whom all things belong, and that He should be co-heir for ever; not that Christ would reign for their sakes — He who is King of all, appointed by the Father. What shall we say of Solomon? Is he with God, or was he rejected after his idolatry? If we say he is with God, we shall promise impunity to idol-worshippers. For Scripture does not say that Solomon repented, or recovered wisdom. But if we say he was rejected, the voice of God meets us, which says that not even the earthly kingdom was taken from Solomon, for David's sake, as it is written in the book of Kings: Tearing, I will tear the kingdom from your hand, and will give it to your servant.
2:102
Yet in your days I will not do this, for David your father's sake; out of your son's hand I will take it. But I will not take away the whole kingdom; one sceptre I will give to your son, for the sake of David My servant, and for the sake of Jerusalem the city which I have chosen (1 Kings 11:11, 13). For what does it profit David, if for his sake his son should obtain an earthly kingdom, only to lose the heavenly one? Whence it is manifest that Solomon is with God, from whom indeed the earthly kingdom was not taken away for David's sake — as He had also said: I will reprove his sins with the rod of men, but My mercy I will not take from him (2 Sam. 7:14). And if he was neither rejected, nor do idol-worshippers possess the kingdom of God:
2:103
it is manifest that Solomon was a figure of the twofold Church, whose breadth of heart and wisdom were as the sand of the sea, and whose idolatry was horrible. Tearing, He says, I will tear the kingdom from your hand; yet in your days I will not do it; out of your son's hand I will take it. The action is continual: tearing I will tear, just as 'blessing I will bless, and multiplying I will multiply your seed.' For He shows that Solomon shall always continue in his son, that is, in his posterity; from whose posthumous Solomons, in their times, God does not take away the kingdom, according to the promises of the fathers; but corrects it for ever, so that He continually takes it away according to the idolatry of Solomon persevering in his sin.
2:104
Otherwise, how does He tear, or not tear, the kingdom out of Solomon's hand, if Solomon is not now good or evil in his sons? But in that He says: Yet I will not take the whole kingdom — He returns to the species, beginning another figure in Solomon's son and servant. In Joshua the son of Nun too the Lord speaks thus, showing the future body in one man — but here only the evil. The people sinned, He says, and transgressed the covenant which I established with them; they stole of the accursed thing, and put it among their own vessels (Josh. 7:11) — when only Achan of the tribe of Judah had done it. Joshua, understanding this body always to come, thus spoke when it befell him: May God exterminate you as also today (Ibid. 25).
2:105
但這事更為要緊得多,就是要知道:以色列和列國的眾城,或聖經所對之說話、或記載其中曾有事發生的各省,絕對都是教會的預表。有些單表明惡的一面,有些表明善的一面,有些則表明兩面。即或有些看似也合於外面的列國,然而在裡面的那一面,整個對立的身體都被涵蓋;正如在被擄的以色列身上,向列國應許了歸向神。因為律法不可能向不在律法之下的人說話,或論到他卻不向他說話;即或在某處,並非藉這緣故,律法並非特指以色列而向外邦人說話,那些外邦人也無論如何當被認為是在裡面的;
But this it is much more necessary to know: that absolutely all the cities of Israel and of the nations, or the provinces which Scripture addresses, or in which it relates that something was done, are a figure of the Church. Some indeed of the evil part only, some of the good, some of both. And even if there be some that seem to fit also the nations that are outside, yet in the part that is within, the whole opposing body is met with; just as in captive Israel, a return to God is promised to the nations. For it is impossible that the Law should speak to one who is not under the Law, or speak of him and not to him; and even if anywhere, without this occasion, it addresses foreigners not specifically in Israel, they are to be believed in every way to be within;
2:106
Haec dicit Dominus :
because, even if what was prophesied specifically came to pass, it is nevertheless the Church. Finally, this property does not fit all the species. For Damascus and Tyre and Soor and many others still exist to this day, which God had said would be utterly removed and not restored. But that the Church is met with in the cities of foreigners is plain in Ezekiel; for when the Lord said to him to foretell destruction upon Teman, which is Esau, and upon Dagon, which is the idol of the Philistines, he understood that the parable was against Jerusalem and the temple. 'The word of the Lord came to me,' he says, 'saying: Son of man, set your face toward Teman, look toward Dagon, prophesy against the highest forest of the Negeb: Hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord:'
2:107
Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour in you every green tree and every dry tree. The kindled flame shall not be quenched, and in it shall be burned every face from the south to the north, that all flesh may know that I the Lord have kindled it; it shall not be quenched any more. And I said, Not so, Lord! They say to me: Is not this a parable which is being spoken? (Ezek. 20:47, 49). And the word of the Lord came to me, he says, saying: Therefore, son of man, prophesy and set your face toward Jerusalem, looking toward their sanctuaries; and you shall prophesy against the land of Israel. Thus says the Lord: Behold, I will draw My sword out of its sheath, and will destroy from you the enemy and the unjust.
2:108
So shall My sword go forth out of its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north; and all flesh shall know that I am the Lord, who have drawn My sword out of its sheath; it shall not return any more. Set, He says, your face toward Teman, and look toward Dagon (Ezek. 21:2, 5). And He interpreted it, saying: Set your face toward Jerusalem, and look toward their sanctuaries. And He showed it of all Jerusalem, saying: I will destroy from you the enemy and the unjust. Thus He says it shall come to pass generally: So shall My sword go forth against all flesh from the south to the north.
2:109
He shows that Teman is in Jerusalem, which there God slays, and Dagon, and all the abominations of the nations, by the working of David's son Solomon in his sons; whereby also, the temples of God being plainly cast down and demolished, and spiritually burned up, He casts into the torrent, that is, the world, him who is born as son of David, Josiah, that the altar in Bethel might be torn down, as it is written: 'O altar, altar, thus says the Lord, Behold, a son shall be born to the house of David, Josiah by name' (1 Kings 13:2). Nineveh, a city of foreigners, is a figure of the twofold Church. But because to pursue the order of the lesson by interpreting is long, it will be enough to state what cannot fit the species.
