3:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ βασιλεὺς Δαρεῖος ἐποίησεν δοχὴν μεγάλην πᾶσιν τοῖς ὑπ’ αὐτὸν καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς οἰκογενέσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς μεγιστᾶσιν τῆς Μηδίας καὶ τῆς Περσίδος
Rex Darius fecit cœnam magnam omnibus vernaculis suis , et omnibus magistratibus Mediæ et Persidis ,
Now king Darius made a great feast to all his subjects, and to all that were born in his house, and to all the princes of Media and of Persia,
3:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ πᾶσιν τοῖς σατράπαις καὶ στρατηγοῖς καὶ τοπάρχαις τοῖς ὑπ’ αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰνδικῆς μέχρι τῆς Αἰθιοπίας ἐν ταῖς ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι ἑπτὰ σατραπείαις
et omnibus purpuratis , et prætoribus , et consulibus , et præfectis sub illo ab India usque Æthiopiam , centum viginti septem provinciis .
and to all the satraps and captains and governors that were under him, from India to Ethiopia, in the hundred twenty and seven provinces.
3:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐφάγοσαν καὶ ἐπίοσαν καὶ ἐμπλησθέντες ἀνέλυσαν ὁ δὲ Δαρεῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀνέλυσεν εἰς τὸν κοιτῶνα καὶ ἐκοιμήθη καὶ ἔξυπνος ἐγένετο
Et cum manducassent , et bibissent , et satiati reverterentur . Tunc Darius rex ascendit in cubiculum suum , et dormivit , et expergefactus est .
And when they had eaten and drunken, and being satisfied were gone home, then Darius the king went into his bedchamber, and slept, and awaked out of his sleep.
3:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ τότε οἱ τρεῖς νεανίσκοι οἱ σωματοφύλακες οἱ φυλάσσοντες τὸ σῶμα τοῦ βασιλέως εἶπαν ἕτερος πρὸς τὸν ἕτερον
Tunc illi tres juvenes corporis custodes , qui custodiebant corpus regis , dixerunt alter alteri :
Then the three young men of the body-guard, that kept the king’s person, spoke one to another:
3:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἴπωμεν ἕκαστος ἡμῶν ἕνα λόγον ὃς ὑπερισχύσει καὶ οὗ ἂν φανῇ τὸ ῥῆμα αὐτοῦ σοφώτερον τοῦ ἑτέρου δώσει αὐτῷ Δαρεῖος ὁ βασιλεὺς δωρεὰς μεγάλας καὶ ἐπινίκια μεγάλα
Dicamus unusquisque nostrum sermonem qui præcellat : et cujuscumque apparuerit sermo sapientior alterius , dabit illi rex Darius dona magna ,
Let every one of us say one thing which shall be strongest: and he whose sentence shall seem wiser than the others, to him shall Darius the king give great gifts, and great honors in token of victory:
3:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ πορφύραν περιβαλέσθαι καὶ ἐν χρυσώμασιν πίνειν καὶ ἐπὶ χρυσῷ καθεύδειν καὶ ἅρμα χρυσοχάλινον καὶ κίδαριν βυσσίνην καὶ μανιάκην περὶ τὸν τράχηλον
purpura cooperiri , et in auro bibere , et super aurum dormire , et currum aureo fræno , et cydarim byssinam , et torquem circa collum :
as, to be clothed in purple, to drink in gold, and to sleep upon gold, and a chariot with bridles of gold, and a headtire of fine linen, and a chain about his neck:
3:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ δεύτερος καθιεῖται Δαρείου διὰ τὴν σοφίαν αὐτοῦ καὶ συγγενὴς Δαρείου κληθήσεται
et secundo loco sedebit a Dario propter sapientiam suam , et cognatus Darii vocabitur .
and he shall sit next to Darius because of his wisdom, and shall be called Darius his cousin.
3:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ τότε γράψαντες ἕκαστος τὸν ἑαυτοῦ λόγον ἐσφραγίσαντο καὶ ἔθηκαν ὑπὸ τὸ προσκεφάλαιον Δαρείου τοῦ βασιλέως καὶ εἶπαν
Tunc scribentes singuli suum verbum signaverunt , et posuerunt subtus cervical Darii regis ,
And then they wrote every one his sentence, and set to their seals, and laid the writing under king Darius his pillow,
3:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὅταν ἐγερθῇ ὁ βασιλεύς δώσουσιν αὐτῷ τὸ γράμμα καὶ ὃν ἂν κρίνῃ ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ οἱ τρεῖς μεγιστᾶνες τῆς Περσίδος ὅτι ὁ λόγος αὐτοῦ σοφώτερος αὐτῷ δοθήσεται τὸ νῖκος καθὼς γέγραπται
et dixerunt , Cum surrexerit rex , dabimus illi scripta nostra , et quodcumque judicaverit rex e tribus , et magistratus Persidis , quoniam verbum ejus sapientius est , ipsi dabitur victoria sicut scriptum est .
and said, When the king is risen, some shall give him the writing; and of whose side the king and the three princes of Persia shall judge that his sentence is the wisest, to him shall the victory be given, as it is written.
3:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὁ εἷς ἔγραψεν ὑπερισχύει ὁ οἶνος
Unus scripsit , Forte est vinum .
The first wrote, Wine is the strongest.
3:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὁ ἕτερος ἔγραψεν ὑπερισχύει ὁ βασιλεύς
Alius scripsit , Fortior est rex .
The second wrote, The king is strongest.
3:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὁ τρίτος ἔγραψεν ὑπερισχύουσιν αἱ γυναῖκες ὑπὲρ δὲ πάντα νικᾷ ἡ ἀλήθεια
Tertius scripsit , Fortiores sunt mulieres : super omnia autem vincit veritas .
The third wrote, Women are strongest: but above all things Truth bears away the victory.
3:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ὅτε ἐξηγέρθη ὁ βασιλεύς λαβόντες τὸ γράμμα ἔδωκαν αὐτῷ καὶ ἀνέγνω
Et cum surrexisset rex , acceperunt scripta sua , et dederunt illi , et legit .
Now when the king was risen up, they took the writing, and gave it to him, and so he read it:
3:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἐξαποστείλας ἐκάλεσεν πάντας τοὺς μεγιστᾶνας τῆς Περσίδος καὶ τῆς Μηδίας καὶ σατράπας καὶ στρατηγοὺς καὶ τοπάρχας καὶ ὑπάτους καὶ ἐκάθισεν ἐν τῷ χρηματιστηρίῳ καὶ ἀνεγνώσθη τὸ γράμμα ἐνώπιον αὐτῶν
Et mittens vocavit omnes magistratus Persarum , et Medos , et purpuratos , et prætores , et præfectos :
and sending forth he called all the princes of Persia and of Media, and the satraps, and the captains, and the governors, and the chief officers;
3:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἶπεν καλέσατε τοὺς νεανίσκους καὶ αὐτοὶ δηλώσουσιν τοὺς λόγους αὐτῶν καὶ ἐκλήθησαν καὶ εἰσήλθοσαν
et sederunt in concilio : et lecta sunt scripta coram ipsis .
and sat him down in the royal seat of judgment; and the writing was read before them.
3:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ εἶπαν αὐτοῖς ἀπαγγείλατε ἡμῖν περὶ τῶν γεγραμμένων
Et dixit , Vocate adolescentes , et ipsi indicabunt verba sua . Et vocati sunt , et introierunt .
And he said, Call the young men, and they shall explain their own sentences. So they were called, and came in.
3:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ἤρξατο ὁ πρῶτος ὁ εἴπας περὶ τῆς ἰσχύος τοῦ οἴνου καὶ ἔφη οὕτως
Et dixit illis , indicate nobis de his quæ scripta sunt . Et cœpit prior , qui dixerat de fortitudine vini ,
And they said to them, Declare to us your mind concerning the things you⌃ have written. Then began the first, who had spoken of the strength of wine,
3:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἄνδρες πῶς ὑπερισχύει ὁ οἶνος πάντας τοὺς ἀνθρώπους τοὺς πίνοντας αὐτὸν πλανᾷ τὴν διάνοιαν
et dixit , Viri , quàm prævalet vinum omnibus hominibus qui bibunt illud ! seducit mentem .
and said thus, O sirs, how exceeding strong is wine! it causes all men to err that drink it:
3:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ τοῦ τε βασιλέως καὶ τοῦ ὀρφανοῦ ποιεῖ τὴν διάνοιαν μίαν τήν τε τοῦ οἰκέτου καὶ τὴν τοῦ ἐλευθέρου τήν τε τοῦ πένητος καὶ τὴν τοῦ πλουσίου
Itemque regis et orphani facit mentem vanam . Item servi ac liberi , pauperis ac divitis ,
it makes the mind of the king and of the fatherless child to be all one; of the bondman and of the freeman, of the poor man and of the rich:
3:20 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ πᾶσαν διάνοιαν μεταστρέφει εἰς εὐωχίαν καὶ εὐφροσύνην καὶ οὐ μέμνηται πᾶσαν λύπην καὶ πᾶν ὀφείλημα
et omnem mentem convertit in securitatem et jucunditatem , et non meminit omnem tristitiam et debitum ,
it turns also every thought into jollity and mirth, so that a man remembers neither sorrow nor debt:
3:21 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ πάσας καρδίας ποιεῖ πλουσίας καὶ οὐ μέμνηται βασιλέα οὐδὲ σατράπην καὶ πάντα διὰ ταλάντων ποιεῖ λαλεῖν
et omnia præcordia facit honesta , et non meminit regem nec magistratum , et omnia per talenta loqui facit .
and it makes every heart rich, so that a man remembers neither king nor satrap; and it makes to speak all things by talents:
3:22 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ οὐ μέμνηται ὅταν πίνωσιν φιλιάζειν φίλοις καὶ ἀδελφοῖς καὶ μετ’ οὐ πολὺ σπῶνται μαχαίρας
Et non meminerunt , cum biberunt , amicitiam nec fraternitatem : sed non multum sumunt gladios .
and when they are in their cups, they forget their love both to friends and kindred, and a little after draw their swords:
3:23 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ ὅταν ἀπὸ τοῦ οἴνου γενηθῶσιν οὐ μέμνηται ἃ ἔπραξαν
Et cum a vino merserint , et surrexerint , non meminerunt quæ gesserunt .
but when they awake from their wine, they remember not what they have done.
3:24 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὦ ἄνδρες οὐχ ὑπερισχύει ὁ οἶνος ὅτι οὕτως ἀναγκάζει ποιεῖν καὶ ἐσίγησεν οὕτως εἴπας
O viri , num præcellit vinum ? quis sic cogit facere ? Et tacuit hoc dicto .
O sirs, is not wine the strongest, seeing that it enforces to do thus? And when he had so spoken, he held his peace.
