6:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיְהִ֣י כַאֲשֶׁ֣ר נִשְׁמַ֣ע לְסַנְבַלַּ֣ט וְ֠טוֹבִיָּ֠ה וּלְגֶ֨שֶׁם הָֽעַרְבִ֜י וּלְיֶ֣תֶר אֹֽיְבֵ֗ינוּ כִּ֤י בָנִ֙יתִי֙ אֶת ־הַ֣חוֹמָ֔ה וְלֹא ־נ֥וֹתַר בָּ֖הּ פָּ֑רֶץ גַּ֚ם עַד ־הָעֵ֣ת הַהִ֔יא דְּלָת֖וֹת לֹא ־הֶעֱמַ֥דְתִּי בַשְּׁעָרִֽים ׃
καὶ ἐγένετο καθὼς ἠκούσθη τῷ Σαναβαλλατ καὶ Τωβια καὶ τῷ Γησαμ τῷ Αραβι καὶ τοῖς καταλοίποις τῶν ἐχθρῶν ἡμῶν ὅτι ᾠκοδόμησα τὸ τεῖχος καὶ οὐ κατελείφθη ἐν αὐτοῖς πνοή ἕως τοῦ καιροῦ ἐκείνου θύρας οὐκ ἐπέστησα ἐν ταῖς πύλαις
Factum est autem , cum audisset Sanaballat , et Tobias , et Gossem Arabs , et ceteri inimici nostri , quod aedificassem ego murum , et non esset in ipso residua interruptio (usque ad tempus autem illud valvas non posueram in portis ),
Now when it was reported to Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arabian, and to the rest of our enemies that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it (though even to that time I had not set up the doors in the gates),
6:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח סַנְבַלַּ֤ט וְגֶ֙שֶׁם֙ אֵלַ֣י לֵאמֹ֔ר לְכָ֞ה וְנִֽוָּעֲדָ֥ה יַחְדָּ֛ו בַּכְּפִירִ֖ים בְּבִקְעַ֣ת אוֹנ֑וֹ וְהֵ֙מָּה֙ חֹֽשְׁבִ֔ים לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת לִ֖י רָעָֽה ׃
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν Σαναβαλλατ καὶ Γησαμ πρός με λέγων δεῦρο καὶ συναχθῶμεν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἐν ταῖς κώμαις ἐν πεδίῳ Ωνω καὶ αὐτοὶ λογιζόμενοι ποιῆσαί μοι πονηρίαν
miserunt Sanaballat et Gossem ad me , dicentes : Veni , et percutiamus foedus pariter in viculis in campo Ono . Ipsi autem cogitabant ut facerent mihi malum .
Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, “Come! Let’s meet together in the villages in the plain of Ono.” But they intended to harm me.
6:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ וָאֶשְׁלְחָ֨ה עֲלֵיהֶ֤ם מַלְאָכִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מְלָאכָ֤ה גְדוֹלָה֙ אֲנִ֣י עֹשֶׂ֔ה וְלֹ֥א אוּכַ֖ל לָרֶ֑דֶת לָ֣מָּה תִשְׁבַּ֤ת הַמְּלָאכָה֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר אַרְפֶּ֔הָ וְיָרַדְתִּ֖י אֲלֵיכֶֽם ׃
καὶ ἀπέστειλα ἐπ’ αὐτοὺς ἀγγέλους λέγων ἔργον μέγα ἐγὼ ποιῶ καὶ οὐ δυνήσομαι καταβῆναι μήποτε καταπαύσῃ τὸ ἔργον ὡς ἂν τελειώσω αὐτό καταβήσομαι πρὸς ὑμᾶς
Misi ergo ad eos nuntios , dicens : Opus grande ego facio , et non possum descendere , ne forte negligatur cum venero , et descendero ad vos .
I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing a great work, so that I can’t come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and come down to you?”
6:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּשְׁלְח֥וּ אֵלַ֛י כַּדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה אַרְבַּ֣ע פְּעָמִ֑ים וָאָשִׁ֥יב אוֹתָ֖ם כַּדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה ׃ {פ}
καὶ ἀπέστειλαν πρός με ὡς τὸ ῥῆμα τοῦτο καὶ ἀπέστειλα αὐτοῖς κατὰ ταῦτα
Miserunt autem ad me secundum verbum hoc per quatuor vices : et respondi eis juxta sermonem priorem .
They sent to me four times like this; and I answered them the same way.
6:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ אֵלַ֨י סַנְבַלַּ֜ט כַּדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֛ה פַּ֥עַם חֲמִישִׁ֖ית אֶֽת ־נַעֲר֑וֹ וְאִגֶּ֥רֶת פְּתוּחָ֖ה בְּיָדֽוֹ ׃
καὶ ἀπέστειλεν πρός με Σαναβαλλατ τὸν παῖδα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐπιστολὴν ἀνεῳγμένην ἐν χειρὶ αὐτοῦ
Et misit ad me Sanaballat juxta verbum prius quinta vice puerum suum , et epistolam habebat in manu sua scriptam hoc modo :
Then Sanballat sent his servant to me the same way the fifth time with an open letter in his hand,
6:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ כָּת֣וּב בָּ֗הּ בַּגּוֹיִ֤ם נִשְׁמָע֙ וְגַשְׁמ֣וּ אֹמֵ֔ר אַתָּ֤ה וְהַיְּהוּדִים֙ חֹשְׁבִ֣ים לִמְר֔וֹד עַל ־כֵּ֛ן אַתָּ֥ה בוֹנֶ֖ה הַחוֹמָ֑ה וְאַתָּ֗ה הֹוֶ֤ה לָהֶם֙ לְמֶ֔לֶךְ כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה ׃
καὶ ἦν γεγραμμένον ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν ἔθνεσιν ἠκούσθη ὅτι σὺ καὶ οἱ Ιουδαῖοι λογίζεσθε ἀποστατῆσαι διὰ τοῦτο σὺ οἰκοδομεῖς τὸ τεῖχος καὶ σὺ γίνῃ αὐτοῖς εἰς βασιλέα
In gentibus auditum est , et Gossem dixit , quod tu et Judaei cogitetis rebellare , et propterea aedifices murum , et levare te velis super eos regem : propter quam causam
in which was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel. Because of that, you are building the wall. You would be their king, according to these words.
6:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְגַם ־נְבִיאִ֡ים הֶעֱמַ֣דְתָּ לִקְרֹא֩ עָלֶ֨יךָ בִֽירוּשָׁלַ֜͏ִם לֵאמֹ֗ר מֶ֚לֶךְ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה וְעַתָּה֙ יִשָּׁמַ֣ע לַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וְעַתָּ֣ה לְכָ֔ה וְנִֽוָּעֲצָ֖ה יַחְדָּֽו ׃ {פ}
καὶ πρὸς τούτοις προφήτας ἔστησας σεαυτῷ ἵνα καθίσῃς ἐν Ιερουσαλημ εἰς βασιλέα ἐν Ιουδα καὶ νῦν ἀπαγγελήσονται τῷ βασιλεῖ οἱ λόγοι οὗτοι καὶ νῦν δεῦρο βουλευσώμεθα ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτό
et prophetas posueris , qui praedicent de te in Jerusalem , dicentes : Rex in Judaea est . Auditurus est rex verba haec : idcirco nunc veni , ut ineamus consilium pariter .
You have also appointed prophets to proclaim of you at Jerusalem, saying, ‘There is a king in Judah!’ Now it will be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let’s take counsel together.”
6:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ וָאֶשְׁלְחָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לֹ֤א נִֽהְיָה֙ כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֖ר אַתָּ֣ה אוֹמֵ֑ר כִּ֥י מִֽלִּבְּךָ֖ אַתָּ֥ה בוֹדָֽאם ׃
καὶ ἀπέστειλα πρὸς αὐτὸν λέγων οὐκ ἐγενήθη ὡς οἱ λόγοι οὗτοι οὓς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι ἀπὸ καρδίας σου σὺ ψεύδῃ αὐτούς
Et misi ad eos , dicens : Non est factum secundum verba haec , quae tu loqueris : de corde enim tuo tu componis haec .
Then I sent to him, saying, “There are no such things done as you say, but you imagine them out of your own heart.”
6:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ כִּ֣י כֻלָּ֗ם מְיָֽרְאִ֤ים אוֹתָ֙נוּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יִרְפּ֧וּ יְדֵיהֶ֛ם מִן ־הַמְּלָאכָ֖ה וְלֹ֣א תֵעָשֶׂ֑ה וְעַתָּ֖ה חַזֵּ֥ק אֶת ־יָדָֽי ׃
ὅτι πάντες φοβερίζουσιν ἡμᾶς λέγοντες ἐκλυθήσονται αἱ χεῖρες αὐτῶν ἀπὸ τοῦ ἔργου τούτου καὶ οὐ ποιηθήσεται καὶ νῦν ἐκραταίωσα τὰς χεῖράς μου
Omnes enim hi terrebant nos , cogitantes quod cessarent manus nostrae ab opere , et quiesceremus : quam ob causam magis confortavi manus meas .
For they all would have made us afraid, saying, “Their hands will be weakened from the work, that it not be done.” But now, strengthen my hands.
6:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַאֲנִי ־בָ֗אתִי בֵּ֣ית שְֽׁמַֽעְיָ֧ה בֶן ־דְּלָיָ֛ה בֶּן ־מְהֵֽיטַבְאֵ֖ל וְה֣וּא עָצ֑וּר וַיֹּ֡אמֶר נִוָּעֵד֩ אֶל ־בֵּ֨ית הָאֱלֹהִ֜ים אֶל ־תּ֣וֹךְ הַֽהֵיכָ֗ל וְנִסְגְּרָה֙ דַּלְת֣וֹת הַהֵיכָ֔ל כִּ֚י בָּאִ֣ים לְהׇרְגֶ֔ךָ וְלַ֖יְלָה בָּאִ֥ים לְהׇרְגֶֽךָ ׃
καὶ ἐγὼ εἰσῆλθον εἰς οἶκον Σεμεϊ υἱοῦ Δαλαια υἱοῦ Μεηταβηλ καὶ αὐτὸς συνεχόμενος καὶ εἶπεν συναχθῶμεν εἰς οἶκον τοῦ θεοῦ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτοῦ καὶ κλείσωμεν τὰς θύρας αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἔρχονται νυκτὸς φονεῦσαί σε
Et ingressus sum domum Semaiae filii Dalaiae filii Metabeel secreto . Qui ait : Tractemus nobiscum in domo Dei in medio templi , et claudamus portas aedis : quia venturi sunt ut interficiant te , et nocte venturi sunt ad occidendum te .
I went to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah the son of Mehetabel, who was shut in at his home; and he said, “Let us meet together in God’s house, within the temple, and let’s shut the doors of the temple; for they will come to kill you. Yes, in the night they will come to kill you.”
6:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ וָאֹמְרָ֗ה הַאִ֤ישׁ כָּמ֙וֹנִי֙ יִבְרָ֔ח וּמִ֥י כָמ֛וֹנִי אֲשֶׁר ־יָבֹ֥א אֶל ־הַהֵיכָ֖ל וָחָ֑י לֹ֖א אָבֽוֹא ׃
καὶ εἶπα τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἀνήρ ὃς εἰσελεύσεται εἰς τὸν οἶκον καὶ ζήσεται
Et dixi : Num quisquam similis mei fugit ? et quis ut ego ingredietur templum , et vivet ? non ingrediar .
I said, “Should a man like me flee? Who is there that, being such as I, would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in.”
6:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ וָאַכִּ֕ירָה וְהִנֵּ֥ה לֹֽא ־אֱלֹהִ֖ים שְׁלָח֑וֹ כִּ֤י הַנְּבוּאָה֙ דִּבֶּ֣ר עָלַ֔י וְטוֹבִיָּ֥ה וְסַנְבַלַּ֖ט שְׂכָרֽוֹ ׃
καὶ ἐπέγνων καὶ ἰδοὺ ὁ θεὸς οὐκ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτόν ὅτι ἡ προφητεία λόγος κατ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ Τωβιας καὶ Σαναβαλλατ ἐμισθώσαντο
Et intellexi quod Deus non misisset eum , sed quasi vaticinans locutus esset ad me , et Tobias et Sanaballat conduxissent eum .
I discerned, and behold, God had not sent him, but he pronounced this prophecy against me. Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.
6:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ לְמַ֤עַן שָׂכוּר֙ ה֔וּא לְמַֽעַן ־אִירָ֥א וְאֶֽעֱשֶׂה ־כֵּ֖ן וְחָטָ֑אתִי וְהָיָ֤ה לָהֶם֙ לְשֵׁ֣ם רָ֔ע לְמַ֖עַן יְחָֽרְפֽוּנִי ׃ {פ}
ἐπ’ ἐμὲ ὄχλον ὅπως φοβηθῶ καὶ ποιήσω οὕτως καὶ ἁμάρτω καὶ γένωμαι αὐτοῖς εἰς ὄνομα πονηρόν ὅπως ὀνειδίσωσίν με
Acceperat enim pretium , ut territus facerem , et peccarem , et haberent malum quod exprobrarent mihi .
He was hired so that I would be afraid, do so, and sin, and that they might have material for an evil report, that they might reproach me.
6:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ זׇכְרָ֧ה אֱלֹהַ֛י לְטוֹבִיָּ֥ה וּלְסַנְבַלַּ֖ט כְּמַעֲשָׂ֣יו אֵ֑לֶּה וְגַ֨ם לְנוֹעַדְיָ֤ה הַנְּבִיאָה֙ וּלְיֶ֣תֶר הַנְּבִיאִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָי֖וּ מְיָֽרְאִ֥ים אוֹתִֽי ׃
μνήσθητι ὁ θεός τῷ Τωβια καὶ τῷ Σαναβαλλατ ὡς τὰ ποιήματα αὐτοῦ ταῦτα καὶ τῷ Νωαδια τῷ προφήτῃ καὶ τοῖς καταλοίποις τῶν προφητῶν οἳ ἦσαν φοβερίζοντές με
Memento mei , Domine , pro Tobia et Sanaballat , juxta opera eorum talia : sed et Noadiae prophetae , et ceterorum prophetarum , qui terrebant me .
“Remember, my God, Tobiah and Sanballat according to these their works, and also the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets that would have put me in fear.”
6:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַתִּשְׁלַם֙ הַֽחוֹמָ֔ה בְּעֶשְׂרִ֥ים וַחֲמִשָּׁ֖ה לֶאֱל֑וּל לַחֲמִשִּׁ֥ים וּשְׁנַ֖יִם יֽוֹם ׃ {פ}
καὶ ἐτελέσθη τὸ τεῖχος πέμπτῃ καὶ εἰκάδι τοῦ Ελουλ εἰς πεντήκοντα καὶ δύο ἡμέρας
Completus est autem murus vigesimo quinto die mensis Elul , quinquaginta duobus diebus .
So the wall was finished in the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days.
6:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר שָֽׁמְעוּ֙ כׇּל ־א֣וֹיְבֵ֔ינוּ וַיִּֽרְא֗וּ כׇּל ־הַגּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר סְבִֽיבֹתֵ֔ינוּ וַיִּפְּל֥וּ מְאֹ֖ד בְּעֵינֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֵּ֣דְע֔וּ כִּ֚י מֵאֵ֣ת אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ נֶעֶשְׂתָ֖ה הַמְּלָאכָ֥ה הַזֹּֽאת ׃
καὶ ἐγένετο ἡνίκα ἤκουσαν πάντες οἱ ἐχθροὶ ἡμῶν καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη τὰ κύκλῳ ἡμῶν καὶ ἐπέπεσεν φόβος σφόδρα ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς αὐτῶν καὶ ἔγνωσαν ὅτι παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἐγενήθη τελειωθῆναι τὸ ἔργον τοῦτο
Factum est ergo cum audissent omnes inimici nostri , ut timerent universae gentes quae erant in circuitu nostro , et conciderent intra semetipsos , et scirent quod a Deo factum esset opus hoc .
When all our enemies heard of it, all the nations that were around us were afraid, and they lost their confidence; for they perceived that this work was done by our God.
6:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ גַּ֣ם ׀ בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֗ם מַרְבִּ֞ים חֹרֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ אִגְּרֹ֣תֵיהֶ֔ם הוֹלְכ֖וֹת עַל ־טוֹבִיָּ֑ה וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר לְטוֹבִיָּ֖ה בָּא֥וֹת אֲלֵיהֶֽם ׃
καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις ἐκείναις ἀπὸ πολλῶν ἐντίμων Ιουδα ἐπιστολαὶ ἐπορεύοντο πρὸς Τωβιαν καὶ αἱ Τωβια ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτούς
Sed et in diebus illis multae optimatum Judaeorum epistolae mittebantur ad Tobiam , et a Tobia veniebant ad eos .
Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah’s letters came to them.
6:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ כִּי ־רַבִּ֣ים בִּֽיהוּדָ֗ה בַּעֲלֵ֤י שְׁבוּעָה֙ ל֔וֹ כִּי ־חָתָ֥ן ה֖וּא לִשְׁכַנְיָ֣ה בֶן ־אָרַ֑ח וִֽיהוֹחָנָ֣ן בְּנ֔וֹ לָקַ֕ח אֶת ־בַּת ־מְשֻׁלָּ֖ם בֶּ֥ן בֶּֽרֶכְיָֽה ׃
ὅτι πολλοὶ ἐν Ιουδα ἔνορκοι ἦσαν αὐτῷ ὅτι γαμβρὸς ἦν τοῦ Σεχενια υἱοῦ Ηραε καὶ Ιωαναν υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἔλαβεν τὴν θυγατέρα Μεσουλαμ υἱοῦ Βαραχια εἰς γυναῖκα
Multi enim erant in Judaea habentes juramentum ejus , quia gener erat Secheniae filii Area , et Johanan filius ejus acceperat filiam Mosollam filii Barachiae :
For there were many in Judah sworn to him because he was the son-in-law of Shecaniah the son of Arah; and his son Jehohanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah as wife.
6:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ גַּ֣ם טוֹבֹתָ֗יו הָי֤וּ אֹמְרִים֙ לְפָנַ֔י וּדְבָרַ֕י הָי֥וּ מוֹצִיאִ֖ים ל֑וֹ אִגְּר֛וֹת שָׁלַ֥ח טוֹבִיָּ֖ה לְיָֽרְאֵֽנִי ׃ {פ}
καὶ τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ ἦσαν λέγοντες πρός με καὶ λόγους μου ἦσαν ἐκφέροντες αὐτῷ καὶ ἐπιστολὰς ἀπέστειλεν Τωβιας φοβερίσαι με
sed et laudabant eum coram me , et verba mea nuntiabant ei : et Tobias mittebat epistolas ut terreret me .
Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.
