30:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ דִּבְרֵ֤י ׀ אָג֥וּר בִּן ־יָקֶ֗ה הַמַּ֫שָּׂ֥א נְאֻ֣ם הַ֭גֶּבֶר לְאִיתִיאֵ֑ל לְאִ֖יתִיאֵ֣ל וְאֻכָֽל ׃
τοὺς ἐμοὺς λόγους υἱέ φοβήθητι καὶ δεξάμενος αὐτοὺς μετανόει τάδε λέγει ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῖς πιστεύουσιν θεῷ καὶ παύομαι
Verba Congregantis , filii Vomentis . Visio quam locutus est vir cum quo est Deus , et qui Deo secum morante confortatus , ait :
The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, the revelation: the man says to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal:
30:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ כִּ֤י בַ֣עַר אָנֹכִ֣י מֵאִ֑ישׁ וְלֹֽא ־בִינַ֖ת אָדָ֣ם לִֽי ׃
ἀφρονέστατος γάρ εἰμι πάντων ἀνθρώπων καὶ φρόνησις ἀνθρώπων οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἐμοί
Stultissimus sum virorum , et sapientia hominum non est mecum .
“Surely I am the most ignorant man, and don’t have a man’s understanding.
30:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ וְלֹֽא ־לָמַ֥דְתִּי חׇכְמָ֑ה וְדַ֖עַת קְדֹשִׁ֣ים אֵדָֽע ׃
θεὸς δεδίδαχέν με σοφίαν καὶ γνῶσιν ἁγίων ἔγνωκα
Non didici sapientiam , et non novi scientiam sanctorum .
I have not learned wisdom, neither do I have the knowledge of the Holy One.
30:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ מִ֤י עָלָֽה ־שָׁמַ֨יִם ׀ וַיֵּרַ֡ד מִ֤י אָֽסַף ־ר֨וּחַ ׀ בְּחׇפְנָ֡יו מִ֤י צָֽרַר ־מַ֨יִם ׀ בַּשִּׂמְלָ֗ה מִ֭י הֵקִ֣ים כׇּל ־אַפְסֵי ־אָ֑רֶץ מַה ־שְּׁמ֥וֹ וּמַֽה ־שֶּׁם ־בְּ֝נ֗וֹ כִּ֣י תֵדָֽע ׃
τίς ἀνέβη εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ κατέβη τίς συνήγαγεν ἀνέμους ἐν κόλπῳ τίς συνέστρεψεν ὕδωρ ἐν ἱματίῳ τίς ἐκράτησεν πάντων τῶν ἄκρων τῆς γῆς τί ὄνομα αὐτῷ ἢ τί ὄνομα τοῖς τέκνοις αὐτοῦ ἵνα γνῷς
Quis ascendit in caelum , atque descendit ? quis continuit spiritum in manibus suis ? quis colligavit aquas quasi in vestimento ? quis suscitavit omnes terminos terrae ? quod nomen est ejus , et quod nomen filii ejus , si nosti ?
Who has ascended up into heaven, and descended? Who has gathered the wind in his fists? Who has bound the waters in his garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and what is his son’s name, if you know?
30:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ כׇּל ־אִמְרַ֣ת אֱל֣וֹהַּ צְרוּפָ֑ה מָגֵ֥ן ה֝֗וּא לַחֹסִ֥ים בּֽוֹ ׃
πάντες λόγοι θεοῦ πεπυρωμένοι ὑπερασπίζει δὲ αὐτὸς τῶν εὐλαβουμένων αὐτόν
Omnis sermo Dei ignitus : clypeus est sperantibus in se .
“Every word of God is flawless. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
30:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ אַל ־תּ֥וֹסְףְּ עַל ־דְּבָרָ֑יו פֶּן ־יוֹכִ֖יחַ בְּךָ֣ וְנִכְזָֽבְתָּ ׃ {פ}
μὴ προσθῇς τοῖς λόγοις αὐτοῦ ἵνα μὴ ἐλέγξῃ σε καὶ ψευδὴς γένῃ
Ne addas quidquam verbis illius , et arguaris , inveniarisque mendax .
Don’t you add to his words, lest he reprove you, and you be found a liar.
30:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ שְׁ֭תַּיִם שָׁאַ֣לְתִּי מֵאִתָּ֑ךְ אַל ־תִּמְנַ֥ע מִ֝מֶּ֗נִּי בְּטֶ֣רֶם אָמֽוּת ׃
δύο αἰτοῦμαι παρὰ σοῦ μὴ ἀφέλῃς μου χάριν πρὸ τοῦ ἀποθανεῖν με
Duo rogavi te : ne deneges mihi antequam moriar :
“Two things I have asked of you. Don’t deny me before I die.
30:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ שָׁ֤וְא ׀ וּֽדְבַר ־כָּזָ֡ב הַרְחֵ֬ק מִמֶּ֗נִּי רֵ֣אשׁ וָ֭עֹשֶׁר אַל ־תִּֽתֶּן ־לִ֑י הַ֝טְרִיפֵ֗נִי לֶ֣חֶם חֻקִּֽי ׃
μάταιον λόγον καὶ ψευδῆ μακράν μου ποίησον πλοῦτον δὲ καὶ πενίαν μή μοι δῷς σύνταξον δέ μοι τὰ δέοντα καὶ τὰ αὐτάρκη
vanitatem et verba mendacia longe fac a me ; mendicitatem et divitias ne dederis mihi : tribue tantum victui meo necessaria ,
Remove far from me falsehood and lies. Give me neither poverty nor riches. Feed me with the food that is needful for me,
30:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ פֶּ֥ן ־אֶשְׂבַּ֨ע ׀ וְכִחַשְׁתִּי֮ וְאָמַ֗רְתִּי מִ֥י ־יְ֫הֹוָ֥ה וּפֶֽן ־אִוָּרֵ֥שׁ וְגָנַ֑בְתִּי וְ֝תָפַ֗שְׂתִּי שֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהָֽי ׃ {פ}
ἵνα μὴ πλησθεὶς ψευδὴς γένωμαι καὶ εἴπω τίς με ὁρᾷ ἢ πενηθεὶς κλέψω καὶ ὀμόσω τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ θεοῦ
ne forte satiatus illiciar ad negandum , et dicam : Quis est Dominus ? aut egestate compulsus , furer , et perjurem nomen Dei mei .
lest I be full, deny you, and say, ‘Who is Yahweh?’ or lest I be poor, and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God.
30:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ אַל ־תַּלְשֵׁ֣ן עֶ֭בֶד אֶל ־אֲדֹנָ֑ו פֶּֽן ־יְקַלֶּלְךָ֥ וְאָשָֽׁמְתָּ ׃
μὴ παραδῷς οἰκέτην εἰς χεῖρας δεσπότου μήποτε καταράσηταί σε καὶ ἀφανισθῇς
Ne accuses servum ad dominum suum , ne forte maledicat tibi , et corruas .
“Don’t slander a servant to his master, lest he curse you, and you be held guilty.
30:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ דּ֭וֹר אָבִ֣יו יְקַלֵּ֑ל וְאֶת ־אִ֝מּ֗וֹ לֹ֣א יְבָרֵֽךְ ׃
ἔκγονον κακὸν πατέρα καταρᾶται τὴν δὲ μητέρα οὐκ εὐλογεῖ
Generatio quae patri suo maledicit , et quae matri suae non benedicit ;
There is a generation that curses their father, and doesn’t bless their mother.
30:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ דּ֭וֹר טָה֣וֹר בְּעֵינָ֑יו וּ֝מִצֹּאָת֗וֹ לֹ֣א רֻחָֽץ ׃
ἔκγονον κακὸν δίκαιον ἑαυτὸν κρίνει τὴν δὲ ἔξοδον αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἀπένιψεν
generatio quae sibi munda videtur , et tamen non est lota a sordibus suis ;
There is a generation that is pure in their own eyes, yet are not washed from their filthiness.
30:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ דּ֭וֹר מָה ־רָמ֣וּ עֵינָ֑יו וְ֝עַפְעַפָּ֗יו יִנָּשֵֽׂאוּ ׃
ἔκγονον κακὸν ὑψηλοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ἔχει τοῖς δὲ βλεφάροις αὐτοῦ ἐπαίρεται
generatio cujus excelsi sunt oculi , et palpebrae ejus in alta surrectae ;
There is a generation, oh how lofty are their eyes! Their eyelids are lifted up.
30:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ דּ֤וֹר ׀ חֲרָב֣וֹת שִׁנָּיו֮ וּֽמַאֲכָל֢וֹת מְֽתַלְּעֹ֫תָ֥יו לֶאֱכֹ֣ל עֲנִיִּ֣ים מֵאֶ֑רֶץ וְ֝אֶבְיוֹנִ֗ים מֵאָדָֽם ׃ {פ}
ἔκγονον κακὸν μαχαίρας τοὺς ὀδόντας ἔχει καὶ τὰς μύλας τομίδας ὥστε ἀναλίσκειν καὶ κατεσθίειν τοὺς ταπεινοὺς ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς καὶ τοὺς πένητας αὐτῶν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων
generatio quae pro dentibus gladios habet , et commandit molaribus suis , ut comedat inopes de terra , et pauperes ex hominibus .
There is a generation whose teeth are like swords, and their jaws like knives, to devour the poor from the earth, and the needy from among men.
30:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ לַ֥עֲלוּקָ֨ה ׀ שְׁתֵּ֥י בָנוֹת֮ הַ֤ב ׀ הַ֥֫ב שָׁל֣וֹשׁ הֵ֭נָּה לֹ֣א תִשְׂבַּ֑עְנָה אַ֝רְבַּ֗ע לֹא ־אָ֥מְרוּ הֽוֹן ׃
τῇ βδέλλῃ τρεῖς θυγατέρες ἦσαν ἀγαπήσει ἀγαπώμεναι καὶ αἱ τρεῖς αὗται οὐκ ἐνεπίμπλασαν αὐτήν καὶ ἡ τετάρτη οὐκ ἠρκέσθη εἰπεῖν ἱκανόν
Sanguisugae duae sunt filiae , dicentes : Affer , affer . Tria sunt insaturabilia , et quartum quod numquam dicit : Sufficit .
“The leech has two daughters: ‘Give, give.’ “There are three things that are never satisfied; four that don’t say, ‘Enough!’:
30:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ שְׁאוֹל֮ וְעֹ֢צֶ֫ר רָ֥חַם אֶ֭רֶץ לֹא ־שָׂ֣בְעָה מַּ֑יִם וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ לֹא ־אָ֥מְרָה הֽוֹן ׃
ᾅδης καὶ ἔρως γυναικὸς καὶ τάρταρος καὶ γῆ οὐκ ἐμπιπλαμένη ὕδατος καὶ ὕδωρ καὶ πῦρ οὐ μὴ εἴπωσιν ἀρκεῖ
Infernus , et os vulvae , et terra quae non satiatur aqua : ignis vero numquam dicit : Sufficit .
Sheol, the barren womb, the earth that is not satisfied with water, and the fire that doesn’t say, ‘Enough!’
30:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ עַ֤יִן ׀ תִּ֥לְעַ֣ג לְאָב֮ וְתָבֻ֢ז לִֽיקְּהַ֫ת ־אֵ֥ם יִקְּר֥וּהָ עֹֽרְבֵי ־נַ֑חַל וְֽיֹאכְל֥וּהָ בְנֵי ־נָֽשֶׁר ׃ {פ}
ὀφθαλμὸν καταγελῶντα πατρὸς καὶ ἀτιμάζοντα γῆρας μητρός ἐκκόψαισαν αὐτὸν κόρακες ἐκ τῶν φαράγγων καὶ καταφάγοισαν αὐτὸν νεοσσοὶ ἀετῶν
Oculum qui subsannat patrem , et qui despicit partum matris suae , effodiant eum corvi de torrentibus , et comedant eum filii aquilae !
“The eye that mocks at his father, and scorns obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, the young eagles shall eat it.
30:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה הֵ֭מָּה נִפְלְא֣וּ מִמֶּ֑נִּי (וארבע ) [וְ֝אַרְבָּעָ֗ה ] לֹ֣א יְדַעְתִּֽים ׃
τρία δέ ἐστιν ἀδύνατά μοι νοῆσαι καὶ τὸ τέταρτον οὐκ ἐπιγινώσκω
Tria sunt difficilia mihi , et quartum penitus ignoro :
“There are three things which are too amazing for me, four which I don’t understand:
30:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ דֶּ֤רֶךְ הַנֶּ֨שֶׁר ׀ בַּשָּׁמַיִם֮ דֶּ֥רֶךְ נָחָ֗שׁ עֲלֵ֫י ־צ֥וּר דֶּרֶךְ ־אֳנִיָּ֥ה בְלֶב ־יָ֑ם וְדֶ֖רֶךְ גֶּ֣בֶר בְּעַלְמָֽה ׃
ἴχνη ἀετοῦ πετομένου καὶ ὁδοὺς ὄφεως ἐπὶ πέτρας καὶ τρίβους νηὸς ποντοπορούσης καὶ ὁδοὺς ἀνδρὸς ἐν νεότητι
viam aquilae in caelo , viam colubri super petram , viam navis in medio mari , et viam viri in adolescentia .
The way of an eagle in the air, the way of a serpent on a rock, the way of a ship in the middle of the sea, and the way of a man with a maiden.
30:20 ⧉ ⤴︎ כֵּ֤ן ׀ דֶּ֥רֶךְ אִשָּׁ֗ה מְנָ֫אָ֥פֶת אָ֭כְלָה וּמָ֣חֲתָה פִ֑יהָ וְ֝אָמְרָ֗ה לֹא ־פָעַ֥לְתִּי אָֽוֶן ׃ {פ}
τοιαύτη ὁδὸς γυναικὸς μοιχαλίδος ἥ ὅταν πράξῃ ἀπονιψαμένη οὐδέν φησιν πεπραχέναι ἄτοπον
Talis est et via mulieris adulterae , quae comedit , et tergens os suum dicit : Non sum operata malum .
“So is the way of an adulterous woman: She eats and wipes her mouth, and says, ‘I have done nothing wrong.’
30:21 ⧉ ⤴︎ תַּ֣חַת שָׁ֭לוֹשׁ רָ֣גְזָה אֶ֑רֶץ וְתַ֥חַת אַ֝רְבַּ֗ע לֹא ־תוּכַ֥ל שְׂאֵֽת ׃
διὰ τριῶν σείεται ἡ γῆ τὸ δὲ τέταρτον οὐ δύναται φέρειν
Per tria movetur terra , et quartum non potest sustinere :
“For three things the earth trembles, and under four, it can’t bear up:
30:22 ⧉ ⤴︎ תַּֽחַת ־עֶ֭בֶד כִּ֣י יִמְל֑וֹךְ וְ֝נָבָ֗ל כִּ֣י יִֽשְׂבַּֽע ־לָֽחֶם ׃
ἐὰν οἰκέτης βασιλεύσῃ καὶ ἄφρων πλησθῇ σιτίων
per servum , cum regnaverit ; per stultum , cum saturatus fuerit cibo ;
For a servant when he is king, a fool when he is filled with food,
30:23 ⧉ ⤴︎ תַּ֣חַת שְׂ֭נוּאָה כִּ֣י תִבָּעֵ֑ל וְ֝שִׁפְחָ֗ה כִּֽי ־תִירַ֥שׁ גְּבִרְתָּֽהּ ׃ {פ}
καὶ οἰκέτις ἐὰν ἐκβάλῃ τὴν ἑαυτῆς κυρίαν καὶ μισητὴ γυνὴ ἐὰν τύχῃ ἀνδρὸς ἀγαθοῦ
per odiosam mulierem , cum in matrimonio fuerit assumpta ; et per ancillam , cum fuerit haeres dominae suae .
for an unloved woman when she is married, and a servant who is heir to her mistress.
30:24 ⧉ ⤴︎ אַרְבָּ֣עָה הֵ֭ם קְטַנֵּי ־אָ֑רֶץ וְ֝הֵ֗מָּה חֲכָמִ֥ים מְחֻכָּמִֽים ׃
τέσσαρα δέ ἐστιν ἐλάχιστα ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ταῦτα δέ ἐστιν σοφώτερα τῶν σοφῶν
Quatuor sunt minima terrae , et ipsa sunt sapientiora sapientibus :
“There are four things which are little on the earth, but they are exceedingly wise:
30:25 ⧉ ⤴︎ הַ֭נְּמָלִים עַ֣ם לֹא ־עָ֑ז וַיָּכִ֖ינוּ בַקַּ֣יִץ לַחְמָֽם ׃
οἱ μύρμηκες οἷς μὴ ἔστιν ἰσχὺς καὶ ἑτοιμάζονται θέρους τὴν τροφήν
formicae , populus infirmus , qui praeparat in messe cibum sibi ;
The ants are not a strong people, yet they provide their food in the summer.
30:26 ⧉ ⤴︎ שְׁ֭פַנִּים עַ֣ם לֹא ־עָצ֑וּם וַיָּשִׂ֖ימוּ בַסֶּ֣לַע בֵּיתָֽם ׃
καὶ οἱ χοιρογρύλλιοι ἔθνος οὐκ ἰσχυρόν οἳ ἐποιήσαντο ἐν πέτραις τοὺς ἑαυτῶν οἴκους
lepusculus , plebs invalida , qui collocat in petra cubile suum ;
The hyraxes are but a feeble folk, yet make they their houses in the rocks.
30:27 ⧉ ⤴︎ מֶ֭לֶךְ אֵ֣ין לָאַרְבֶּ֑ה וַיֵּצֵ֖א חֹצֵ֣ץ כֻּלּֽוֹ ׃
ἀβασίλευτόν ἐστιν ἡ ἀκρὶς καὶ ἐκστρατεύει ἀφ’ ἑνὸς κελεύσματος εὐτάκτως
regem locusta non habet , et egreditur universa per turmas suas ;
The locusts have no king, yet they advance in ranks.
30:28 ⧉ ⤴︎ שְׂ֭מָמִית בְּיָדַ֣יִם תְּתַפֵּ֑שׂ וְ֝הִ֗יא בְּהֵ֣יכְלֵי מֶֽלֶךְ ׃ {פ}
καὶ καλαβώτης χερσὶν ἐρειδόμενος καὶ εὐάλωτος ὢν κατοικεῖ ἐν ὀχυρώμασιν βασιλέως
stellio manibus nititur , et moratur in aedibus regis .
You can catch a lizard with your hands, yet it is in kings’ palaces.
30:29 ⧉ ⤴︎ שְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה הֵ֭מָּה מֵיטִ֣יבֵי צָ֑עַד וְ֝אַרְבָּעָ֗ה מֵיטִ֥בֵי לָֽכֶת ׃
τρία δέ ἐστιν ἃ εὐόδως πορεύεται καὶ τὸ τέταρτον ὃ καλῶς διαβαίνει
Tria sunt quae bene gradiuntur , et quartum quod incedit feliciter :
“There are three things which are stately in their march, four which are stately in going:
30:30 ⧉ ⤴︎ לַ֭יִשׁ גִּבּ֣וֹר בַּבְּהֵמָ֑ה וְלֹא ־יָ֝שׁ֗וּב מִפְּנֵי ־כֹֽל ׃
σκύμνος λέοντος ἰσχυρότερος κτηνῶν ὃς οὐκ ἀποστρέφεται οὐδὲ καταπτήσσει κτῆνος
leo , fortissimus bestiarum , ad nullius pavebit occursum ;
The lion, which is mightiest among animals, and doesn’t turn away for any;
30:31 ⧉ ⤴︎ זַרְזִ֣יר מׇתְנַ֣יִם אוֹ ־תָ֑יִשׁ וּ֝מֶ֗לֶךְ אַלְק֥וּם עִמּֽוֹ ׃
καὶ ἀλέκτωρ ἐμπεριπατῶν θηλείαις εὔψυχος καὶ τράγος ἡγούμενος αἰπολίου καὶ βασιλεὺς δημηγορῶν ἐν ἔθνει
gallus succinctus lumbos ; et aries ; nec est rex , qui resistat ei .
the greyhound; the male goat; and the king against whom there is no rising up.
30:32 ⧉ ⤴︎ אִם ־נָבַ֥לְתָּ בְהִתְנַשֵּׂ֑א וְאִם ־זַ֝מּ֗וֹתָ יָ֣ד לְפֶֽה ׃
ἐὰν πρόῃ σεαυτὸν εἰς εὐφροσύνην καὶ ἐκτείνῃς τὴν χεῖρά σου μετὰ μάχης ἀτιμασθήσῃ
Est qui stultus apparuit postquam elevatus est in sublime ; si enim intellexisset , ori suo imposuisset manum .
“If you have done foolishly in lifting up yourself, or if you have thought evil, put your hand over your mouth.
30:33 ⧉ ⤴︎ כִּ֤י מִ֪יץ חָלָ֡ב י֘וֹצִ֤יא חֶמְאָ֗ה וּֽמִיץ ־אַ֭ף י֣וֹצִיא דָ֑ם וּמִ֥יץ אַ֝פַּ֗יִם י֣וֹצִיא רִֽיב ׃ {פ}
ἄμελγε γάλα καὶ ἔσται βούτυρον ἐὰν δὲ ἐκπιέζῃς μυκτῆρας ἐξελεύσεται αἷμα ἐὰν δὲ ἐξέλκῃς λόγους ἐξελεύσονται κρίσεις καὶ μάχαι
Qui autem fortiter premit ubera ad eliciendum lac exprimit butyrum ; et qui vehementer emungit elicit sanguinem ; et qui provocat iras producit discordias .
For as the churning of milk produces butter, and the wringing of the nose produces blood, so the forcing of wrath produces strife.”
