7:1
Ζʹ.
Chapter 7. 'And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah.'
What I have often said, this I shall say now also: that in olden times the prophecies were not made for this purpose, merely that the Jews might learn what was to come, but that, having learned, they might thereby gain profit, and by the fear of the threat become more temperate, and by the promise of good things become more eager for the practice of virtue — learning from both sides both the power of God and His care for them.
For it was on this account that the things spoken were foretold, and in order that they might not suppose that the events came upon them merely and by chance, according to some sequence of nature or course of affairs, but that they might know that both these things come from above and from the decree of God — which greatly profited them toward the knowledge of God.
which greatly profited them toward the knowledge of God.
But since, as I have already said before, the prophecy did not have its demonstration at that very moment, but the words were spoken then, while the events were to come to pass long ages afterward — some of the hearers often passing away beforehand and being unable to judge by the sequence of what was said — behold what God does and contrives.
He joins a nearer prophecy to longer-range prophecies, providing the one that came to pass in their own generation as a most weighty demonstration of those things that would come to pass long afterward.
But in the Gospels He arranges this kind of benefit in yet another manner, joining miracles to prophecies and confirming the one by the other.
The leper once came to Him and was cleansed; and after him again the centurion's servant was delivered from that grievous sickness; and these were great signs.
yet nevertheless He did not stop at the signs, but added a prophecy as well.
For since the centurion displayed that wonderful and great faith, through which he delivered his servant from the sickness, Christ went on to say:
'Many shall come from east and west, and shall recline with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob; but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness.'
And these things He said, foreannouncing both the calling of the Gentiles and the casting off of the Jews;
祂說這些話,是預先宣告外邦人的蒙召和猶太人的被棄;
7:13
which indeed has now come to pass in the events themselves, and is shown to all more plainly than the sun;
這事如今已在事實上應驗了,並且顯明給眾人,比日頭更加清楚;
7:14
but at that time it was as yet uncertain and, to the unbelieving, not readily accepted.
For this reason, then, He took beforehand as a sign the thing that came to pass at that time, laying up in advance much faith for that which would come to pass afterward;
因此,祂便先取那當時成就的事作為一個記號,為那日後要成就的事預先積存許多信心;
7:16
just as, then, the prophecy itself, now being manifest in the events, by the sign
that came to pass at that time, provides much confirmation.
For what could the unbeliever say? That the leper was not cleansed? Let him look at the truth of the prophecy, and from this let him also believe the sign.
And what could the Jews of that time say? That the things He foretells are not true? Let them see the leper being cleansed, and from the things done in his case let them not disbelieve concerning the things to come — those receiving as a most weighty pledge the sign of the prophecy, and those of the present time receiving the prophecy of the sign.
Do you see how the one is established through the other? This too one may see happening in the Old Testament.
For since Jeroboam too raged with that grievous madness and set up golden calves, the prophet came and both foreannounced the things to come and straightway gave a sign.
For in order that no one might disbelieve the things that would come to pass after three hundred years, he rent the altar and poured out the fatness and withered the hand of the king, providing from the things done before their eyes a clear demonstration of the things that would come to pass after much time.
And one may see many such things happening both in the New and in the Old Testament, God ordering our salvation in various ways.
This indeed has happened here also, and with greater abundance;
這事在這裏也照樣發生了,並且更加豐盛;
7:25
for He wove together not a sign only, but a prophecy together with a sign at the same time.
But in order that the things spoken may become clearer, let us go over the history itself with precision.
'And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Aram, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up against Jerusalem to make war against it, and they were not able to besiege it.'
'And it was reported to the house of David, saying:'
'Aram has made an agreement with Ephraim.'
What is said is indeed history and a narration of events;
所說的固然是歷史,是事件的記述;
7:31
but he who has understanding and sees sharply will reap much gain from this too, learning thoroughly the great wisdom of God and His care for the Jews.
For neither did He hold back the war from the outset, nor did He permit those who had come to prevail over the city; but letting the threat conveyed by words come to pass, He hindered the actual experience of it — at once rousing them from sleep and delivering them from their sloth, and at the same time displaying His own power: that it was possible for Him, even when the calamities had come to their very end, to keep those who had fallen into them unharmed, as though they had not even taken a beginning.
One may see Him doing this in many places;
人可以看見祂在許多地方都這樣行;
7:34
as in the case of the Babylonian furnace, and of the lions' den, and in countless other affairs.
For indeed these came and besieged, and having laid hold of the walls and shaken the minds of those dwelling within, they availed nothing further.
And from this too one may see the lawlessness of the ten tribes: that not only did they take up a civil war, nor merely that they rose in faction against their brethren, but that they even joined themselves to foreigners and aliens; and those who were not even permitted so much as to have fellowship with them, these they called as allies, and made common cause and stood against the city.
For they stirred up Rezin, who was a foreigner, against the mother-city.
7:38
And the circumstances of the battle were unequal.
For on their side there was a boundless multitude, and cities and nations and peoples;
因為在他們那一邊有無數的群眾,有城邑、有列國、有萬民;
7:40
but here there was none of these, only a single city, the mother-city — so that from the abundance the strength of God might be made manifest.
For with no one moving weapons, nor going out and drawing up in battle array, those men fell away from these wicked undertakings.
'For they were not able,' he says, 'to besiege it.'
And yet what was it that hindered them? Nothing else, but the hand of God invisibly repelling them.
Nevertheless, as I said, He repelled the war, but did not immediately take away the fear.
'For it was reported,' he says, 'to the house of David, that Aram had made an agreement with Ephraim.'
'And his soul was shaken, and the soul of his people.'
Whenever God is about to do something marvelous, He does not immediately bring on the wonder, but first allows those who are to benefit from it to come to a perception of the calamities, so that after their deliverance from the calamities there may be no ingratitude.
For since most men, partly through pride and partly through sloth, forget the calamities after their deliverance from the calamities — or, not forgetting, wish to reckon the successes to themselves — He first allows them to be shaken by the grievous things, and then gives them freedom from the things that trouble them;
因為大多數人,一面出於自高,一面出於懈怠,在脫離災禍之後就忘了那些災禍——或者雖不忘記,卻想把那成就歸功於自己——祂便先容許他們被那愁苦之事所搖撼,然後才賜下脫離那攪擾之事的釋放;
7:49
which indeed He has done here also.
He allowed their hearts to be shaken, He allowed them to come into great anguish, and then He brought on the deliverance.
This He did also in the case of the great David.
For since He was about to lead him forth into the battle array and to raise up that splendid trophy through his hands, He did not do this from the very outset of the war, but, having allowed them for forty days to be worn down by fear — when they had despaired of their own salvation, and while the barbarian was heaping upon them countless reproaches, and not even so did anyone dare to rouse himself and receive the adversary — then indeed, then, when their defeat had been acknowledged and their weakness had become manifest, He led the youth to the war and wrought that marvelous victory.
For if, even after these things and after so great a proof of their weakness, the king who had been saved, wasting away with envy and malice, plotted against David, having become wholly given over to his passion, and showed himself ungrateful toward his benefactor — if he had not given so great a proof both of his own cowardice and that of his whole army, what would he not have done? This very thing one may see God doing in many other places as well;
因為即使在這些事之後,並在他們軟弱得了如此大的明證之後,那蒙拯救的王竟因嫉妒和惡毒而枯乾憔悴,圖謀害大衛,完全被自己的情慾所轄制,向那施恩於他的人顯出忘恩——倘若他不曾如此大大證明自己並全軍的怯懦,他還有甚麼是做不出來的呢?這同樣的事,人也可以看見神在許多別處都這樣行;
7:54
for since He is about to end the war and deliver them from their sorrows, He first allows them to perceive the calamities.
'For his soul was shaken,' he says, 'and the soul of his people, as a tree in a wood is shaken by the wind.'
And this too is proper to prophecy: to bring forth into the open their hidden things.
For it interprets to us the passion of each one's mind, and for the sake of clarity adds an image as well, so as to show the intensity of the anguish.
'For their soul was shaken,' he says, their spirit was cast down, they despaired of salvation, they thought themselves to be in the utmost straits, they expected nothing good, each one was betrayed by his own reasonings.
What then does God do? He foretells the deliverance, and then works it, so that they might not again reckon the freeing of the city to some other cause; and He sends the prophet to foreannounce the things to come.
'For the Lord said,' he says, 'to Isaiah:'
'Go out to meet Ahaz, you and your son Jashub who is left, at the pool of the upper way of the fuller's field;'
'take heed to be quiet, and fear not, neither let your soul be faint;'
'neither be afraid because of these two smoking firebrands of wood.'
'For when the anger of my wrath comes, I will heal again.'
What does it mean, 'Go out to meet'? Because of his fear and anguish the king was not quiet, nor could he endure to remain at home; but, as it is the custom for those under siege to do, he continually went out, surveying the walls, coming to the gates, busying himself and prying anxiously, to see how the affairs of the enemy stood.
'You and your son Jashub who is left?' Jashub in the Hebrew tongue means 'the return' and 'the manner of life.'
For this reason also Jesse, when he sent David, said:
'And you shall bring back their pledge'—
that is, 'You shall report to me their manner of life, and how they are faring in their doings.'
And here too, then, it seems to me, the prophet is commanded to take a multitude with him, so that when the things foretold come to pass, the king may not be able to plead ignorance, as though he had heard none of these things from the prophet.
'Go out to meet him, you and those who remain with you, those of the people who have been left behind.'
Do not be surprised if he calls the people his son;
你不要希奇他稱百姓為他的兒子;
7:73
'Behold, I and the children whom God has given me.'
For the saints held the rank of fathers, hiding all the claims of nature beneath the love and care they bore toward that people.
He calls them 'those who have been left behind,' because many had been carried off by the enemy.
7:76
'On the road of the fuller's field.'
This too seems to me to present great difficulty—if indeed those who were shut in and besieged, and who dared not even peep out, appeared outside the gates.
For this road now appears to lie outside the walls.
What then is the solution to this difficulty? That in ancient times the city was encircled by yet another wall;
那麼這困惑的解答是甚麼呢?就是在古時,這城另外還環繞著一道城牆;
7:80
for the city had double walls;
因為這城有雙重的城牆;
7:81
and this is easy to perceive from another prophet, for those willing to give heed.
Having gone out, therefore, he raises up their fallen spirits and bids them take courage concerning what is to come.
'Be still,' he says, 'and do not fear;'
and he calls the kings 'smoking firebrands of wood,' indicating at once both their fierceness and their vulnerability.
For it is on this account that he added 'smoking'—that is, being now near to being quenched.
Then, showing that the assault came not from their power but from His own permission, he says:
'For when the wrath of my anger is aroused, I will heal again.'
'And the son of Aram and the son of Remaliah, because they have devised an evil counsel—Ephraim and the son of Remaliah—saying against you:'
'We will go up into Judea, and afflict it, and having conferred together we will turn them over to ourselves, and we will set as king over it the son of Tabeel.'
'Thus says the Lord of Sabaoth:'
'This counsel shall by no means stand, neither shall it come to pass;'
'but the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin.'
'And yet sixty-five years, and the kingdom of Ephraim shall cease to be a people.'
'And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is the son of Remaliah.'
'And unless you believe, neither shall you understand.'
Again the prophet furnishes a most powerful proof of his prophecy.
For since fear had shaken them, and the terrors were before their eyes, while the good things lay in hope and surpassed all expectation, and the hearers were not very ready to believe, see what he does.
He gives a most mighty sign of the things that are to come, bringing the enemies' plans out into the open.
For he tells their intent, with which they marched against the city, and what they said to one another, and what they agreed upon before returning; and he shows that the matter was either treachery (for 'having conferred with them,' he says, 'we will turn them over to ourselves') or that they were drunk with utter madness, thinking they had no need even of arms, nor of battle array and engagement, in order to take the city.
'For it is enough for us,' he says, 'merely to appear and to parley, and then to take them all captive and depart.'
Then, as is the way with the arrogant, being puffed up by this hope, they even deliberate about a king, as though the city were already taken, and about whom they must set over the mother-city.
'And their designs,' he says, 'are of this sort;'
'but God's purposes are destructive of all those things.'
And he did not stop there, but added, 'Sabaoth.'
For whenever he is about to announce something great, he calls to mind the power of God, and the kingdom on high, and that wondrous and marvelous dominion.
What then does God say? 'This counsel shall by no means stand, neither shall it come to pass;'
'but the head of Aram is Damascus.'
'His dominion,' he says, 'his authority, shall stand in Damascus, and shall advance no further.'
'And the head of Damascus is Rezin.'
'And the ruler of Damascus,' he says, 'and its lord, shall be Rezin;'
that is, he shall remain within his own bounds, and shall add no greater power to himself.
'And yet sixty-five years, and the kingdom of Ephraim shall cease to be a people.'
And it is the greatest proof of the truth, when the prophets foretell the very times as well, thereby providing to those willing to examine it with exactness the power of the prophecy.
'For now,' he says, 'they shall withdraw from the city;'
'but after sixty-five years the nation shall utterly perish, and the kingdom of Israel shall pass away, and the enemies shall take them and drive them all off.'
'Now, however, before that captivity, they shall gain nothing beyond what is their own.'
For lest the king, hearing that after sixty-five years they would perish, should say to himself, 'What of it? If, after taking us now, they are to perish then, what benefit is that to us?'—'Take courage,' he says, 'also concerning present matters.'
'For then they shall be utterly captured;'
'now, however, they shall possess nothing beyond what is their own.'
'But the head of Ephraim'—that is, of the ten tribes—'shall be Samaria;'
for there was their kingdom;
因為他們的國就在那裡;
7:122
and it shall not be extended further;
並且它必不再向前擴展;
7:123
'and the head of Samaria is the king of Israel;'
showing here the same thing he said concerning the Damascene—that they shall possess nothing beyond what they now hold.
Then, since he had spoken of things surpassing human reason, higher than the sequence of ordinary reasonings, and since what was said was prophecy, he fittingly added:
'Unless you believe, neither shall you understand.'
'Do not seek,' he says, 'how and in what manner these things shall be;'
'for it is God who works them, and you have need of faith alone, and you shall conceive the power of Him who does them;'
'you have received the full proof of the things that have been said.'
Wherefore the prophet David also said:
7:131
'I believed, therefore I also spoke.'
And Paul, fittingly laying hold of this saying, drew it out to greater matters, saying:
'But having the same Spirit of faith, according to what is written:'
'I believed, therefore I also spoke—we too believe, therefore we also speak.'
For if the things of old required faith, standing at as great a distance from those in the New as earth from heaven, how much more does the knowledge of doctrines so lofty, which had never even entered anyone's mind at any time.
Which very thing he himself also declared, saying:
The things which eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor which have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.
And the Lord again spoke to Ahaz, saying:
Ask for yourself a sign from the Lord your God, in the depth or in the height.
I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord.
Hear now, O house of David:
Is it a small thing for you to weary men? And how do you weary the Lord? Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign.
Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel.
Great is the condescension of God, and great the ingratitude of the king.
For he ought, having heard the prophet, to have doubted nothing concerning the things spoken;
因為他既已聽了先知的話,本當對所說的毫不懷疑;
7:146
but even if he did doubt, he should at least have believed upon receiving a sign, which is what many among the Jews have done.
For God, being a lover of mankind, did not refuse to grant even this repeatedly to those who were more dull, who crawled upon the ground and were nailed fast to the earth, as He did in the case of Gideon.
For since he was the most lowly of all and the most dull, behold to what point God again condescends.
He Himself draws him on and urges him to ask for the sign;
神親自吸引他,並催促他去求兆頭;
7:150
and yet this was no small sign—to expose his hidden things, to bring forth into the open his whole mind, and to convict all his hypocrisy.
For since the prophet had said:
'Ask for yourself a sign,' but he, feigning to be exceedingly faithful, said:
'I will not ask, neither will I tempt the Lord'—see how, with much vehemence, the prophet applies the cutting rebuke, fittingly making the accusation heavier after the exposure of his hypocrisy.
For this reason he does not even deem him worthy of an answer, but turns away toward the people, saying:
'Is it a small thing for you to weary men? And how do you weary the Lord?' The saying is obscure;
「你們使人厭煩豈算為小事嗎?你們又怎樣使耶和華厭煩呢?」這話晦澀難明;
7:156
therefore the expression must be unfolded with precision.
For what he says is of this sort:
Are the words mine? Is the pronouncement mine? But if to disbelieve men simply and without reason is grievous and worthy of blame, how much more so to disbelieve God.
To weary, then, is nothing else than to disbelieve.
Is this, then, he says, no small charge? Is it a trivial accusation to disbelieve men? But if this is grievous, how much more so toward God.
And he said this too, that all might learn that the prophet remained undeceived, not being misled by the words that had been spoken, but rendering his verdict from the things in the mind of Ahaz.
This also Christ did often in the Gospels.
For before furnishing the proof from signs, He would bring into the open the wickedness of the Jews that was being brewed in their mind—and this was no small thing.
As He did in the case of the paralytic.
For when He had said to him:
'Your sins are forgiven you,' and they were saying within themselves:
He says—before He had knit together the paralyzed man:
'Why do you think evil in your hearts?'—thus furnishing the greatest proof of His divinity, namely the knowing of the hidden things of the mind.
For You alone, he says, know the hearts.
God who searches hearts and reins.
This too God often granted the prophets to know, that those who heard might learn that nothing of the things spoken was human, but that the whole verdict was brought down from above and from the heavens.
For this reason too this most eloquent Isaiah, when with much gentleness he had discoursed with the king, and had freed him from his terrors, and bade him take courage concerning the present circumstances, and furnished him proofs of this—by declaring the counsel of those who had marched against him, and convicting the treachery, and foretelling the utter and complete captivity of Israel, and adding the time—was not content with these things, but goes yet further, and does not wait for him to ask a sign, but urges him on even against his will, on account of his excess of unbelief;
因此,這位極其雄辯的以賽亞,既已以極大的溫和與王談論,使他脫離驚惶,吩咐他為當前的境況壯膽,並為此給了他憑據——就是宣告那些興兵攻擊他之人的計謀,揭穿其詭詐,預言以色列徹底而完全的被擄,並加上了時限——他仍不以這些為滿足,反而更進一步,不等他求兆頭,反倒因他過度的不信而催逼他,即使他並不情願;
7:173
and not simply so, but he even makes him lord of the choice;
而且不僅如此,他甚至讓王作那揀選的主;
7:174
for he does not say, this or that sign, but 'wherever you will,' he says;
因為他不說「這個或那個兆頭」,而是說「隨你所願」;
7:175
rich is the Master, all-powerful is His power, ineffable His authority.
If you wish it from the heavens, nothing hinders;
你若願意求顯在天上,沒有什麼能攔阻;
7:177
if from the earth, nothing stands in the way.
But since not even so did he draw him on, neither here did he keep silent, but bringing forward a rebuke—and this too for the correction of the hearer and to show that he had not deceived nor misled—he uncovers a hidden prophecy, the one that would be for the salvation of the whole world and for the setting right of all things;
然而,既然連這樣也未能吸引他,先知在此也並不緘默,卻施行責備——這也是為了糾正那聽者,並要顯明他並未欺哄、也未誤導——他揭示了一個隱密的預言,就是那將要成就全世界的救恩、並要匡正萬事的預言;
7:179
and he says that the sign is henceforth given, not to Ahaz, but to the common assembly of the Jews.
For at the beginning he directed the discourse to him;
因為起初他是向亞哈斯講論的;
7:181
but since that man declared himself unworthy, he addresses the common body of the people.
For this reason, he says, He will give—not to you, but to you all—a sign.
To you all—to whom? To those in the house of David.
For from there sprang the sign.
What, then, is the sign? Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb and bear a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel.
It must be observed, as I said before also, that the sign is henceforth not given to Ahaz.
And that it is no mere conjecture, the prophet himself both charged and accused, saying:
'Is it a small thing for you to weary men?' and he added:
'Therefore the Lord will give you all a sign.'
'Behold, the virgin shall have in her womb.'
But if she were not a virgin, neither would it be a sign.
For the sign must depart from the common course and transcend the custom of nature, and be strange and marvelous, so that everyone of those who see and hear may take note of it.
For it is on this account that it is called a sign, because of its being conspicuous.
But it could not be conspicuous if it were to be hidden by sharing in the community of other ordinary events.
So that if the discourse were about a woman bearing by the law of nature, why does he call a sign that which happens every day? For this reason too, at the outset he did not say simply:
'Behold, a virgin,' but 'Behold, the virgin,' hinting by the addition of the article at a certain conspicuous one, and the only one of such a kind to have come to be among us.
For that this addition indicates this, it is possible to learn also from the Gospels.
For when the Jews sent to John, asking, 'Who are you?' they did not say:
7:199
'Are you a christ?' but 'Are you the Christ?';
「你是一位基督嗎?」而是說「你是那基督嗎?」;
7:200
nor did they say, 'Are you a prophet?' but 'Are you the prophet?';
他們也沒有說「你是一位先知嗎?」而是說「你是那先知嗎?」;
7:201
For this reason too John, at the beginning, did not say:
'In the beginning was a Word,' but 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God.'
So then here too he did not say:
'Behold, a virgin,' but 'Behold, the virgin';
「看哪,有童女」,而是說「看哪,那童女」;
7:205
and with the dignity befitting a prophet, the word 'Behold.'
For it was almost as of one seeing the things that were coming to pass, and beholding them as in vision, and possessing great full assurance concerning the things spoken.
For those men beheld the things unseen more clearly than we behold with our eyes.
It is likely that the senses may also be deceived;
感官很可能是會受欺騙的;
7:209
but the grace of the Spirit furnished a declaration that could not be deceived.
«And why,» they say, «did he not add that the birth would be of the Spirit?» What was spoken was a prophecy, and it had to be proclaimed in a veiled manner—as I have often said—on account of the perversity of the hearers, lest, having learned everything plainly, they should also burn up all the books.
For if they did not spare the prophets, much more would they not have kept their hands off the writings.
And that what has been said is no mere conjecture: a certain other king, in the days of Jeremiah, took the very books, cut them to pieces, and delivered them to the fire.
Do you see the intolerable madness? Do you see the senseless rage? It was not enough for him to make away with the writings, but he even burned them, wishing to give full vent to his irrational passion.
Yet nonetheless, even though he spoke obscurely, this wondrous prophet made the whole thing plain.
For a virgin, so long as she remains a virgin, from what other source could she conceive, if not from the Holy Spirit? For to break the law of nature belonged to no other than the Maker of nature.
So that by saying that the virgin would bear, he indicated the whole.
Having therefore spoken of the birth, he speaks also of the name of the one born—not the name given, but that derived from the deeds.
For just as he calls Jerusalem a city of righteousness—although nowhere was it named a city of righteousness, but it held this appellation from the deeds, because of the great change for the better that had come upon it and the protection of the righteous one (for indeed, when he calls it a harlot, it is not as though the city were ever so named, but he assigns the name from its wickedness;
因為正如他稱耶路撒冷為公義之城——雖然它從未被稱為公義之城,卻是因所行之事而有此稱號,因為它已有極大向善的轉變,並有那義者的保護(因為當他稱它為妓女時,也並非那城曾如此被稱呼,乃是從它的邪惡給它起這名;
7:219
so also afterward, from its virtue)—
the same, then, must be said also concerning Christ: that he assigned to him the name derived from the deeds.
For then most of all did God become with us, when he was seen upon the earth and dwelt among men and displayed his great care for us.
For no longer was it an angel, nor an archangel, that was with us, but the Master himself descended and undertook the entire restoration: conversing with harlots, reclining at table with tax-collectors, entering into the houses of sinners, granting boldness to robbers, drawing magi to himself, going about everywhere and setting all things right, and uniting our very nature to himself.
All these things, then, the prophet proclaims beforehand, speaking at once both of the birth and of that unspeakable and boundless gain of the birth-pangs.
For when God is with men, there is no longer any need to fear, nor to tremble, but to take courage over all things;
因為當神與人同在時,就再無須懼怕,也無須戰兢,反倒可以在凡事上放膽;
7:225
For indeed those ancient and immovable evils were dissolved, and the sentence against the common race was abolished, and the sinews of sin were severed, and the tyranny of the devil was overthrown, and paradise, impassable to all, was first opened to a murderer and a robber, and the vaults of heaven were flung open, and men were mingled with angels, and our nature was led up to the royal throne, and the prison-house of Hades became useless, and death henceforth remained a name only, deprived of its reality;
因為那些古老而不可動搖的禍患都被解除了,那定在共有之族類上的判決被廢去了,罪的筋腱被割斷了,魔鬼的暴政被推翻了,那向眾人都不可通行的樂園,首先向一個殺人犯和強盜敞開了,諸天的穹蒼被打開了,人與天使相交了,我們的本性被高舉到那君王的寶座前,陰間的牢獄成了無用之物,死亡從此徒存其名,被剝奪了它的實質;
7:226
and choirs of martyrs, and women, shattered the stings of Hades.
Foreseeing all these things, then, the prophet leaped for joy and danced, and by a single word he indicated them to us, prophesying to us the Emmanuel.
«Butter and honey shall he eat, before he knows or chooses evil he shall choose the good.»
«Because before the child knows good or evil, he refuses wickedness, so as to choose the good.»
Since the child that was born was neither a mere man, nor God only, but God in man, the prophet with good reason varies his discourse, now saying this, now that, setting forth the paradoxes and not permitting the economy to be disbelieved because of the excess of the wonder.
For having said that the virgin would bear, which was above nature, and that he would be called Emmanuel, which itself too was beyond expectation—lest anyone, hearing «Emmanuel,» should suffer the error of Marcion and fall sick with the disease of Valentinus concerning the economy—he expressly added also the clearest proof of the economy, confirming it from the table itself.
But this could not belong to Godhead, but to our nature.
For it was on this account that he did not simply form a man and dwell in him, but he also endured conception, and that of nine months, and birth-pangs, and swaddling-clothes, and the nourishment of earliest infancy, that through all these things he might stop the mouths of those who attempt to deny the economy.
Foreseeing these things from on high, then, the prophet speaks not of the birth-pangs and the wondrous birth alone, but also of the nourishment in earliest infancy, that in the swaddling-clothes themselves—differing in nothing from the rest of men, nor having anything strange in this respect.
For neither were all things in him altered, nor were all things common.
For to be born of a woman is common, but to be born of a virgin is greater than accords with us.
And to be nourished again by the common law of nature, this too is common to the many;
至於照著自然的共通之律受餵養,這也是眾人所共有的;
7:238
but that that temple should become impassable to wickedness, and should not even come to the trial of wickedness, this is strange and paradoxical and belonging to him alone.
Wherefore indeed he has set down both that and this.
«For it was not after the trial of evil that he stood aloof from evil,» he says, «but from the very first and from his earliest beginnings he displayed every virtue.»
«Which of you convicts me of sin?» And, «The ruler of this world comes, and in me he has nothing.»
And this very prophet, going on further, says that «He did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth.»
This, then, is what he says here also: that before he knew or chose evil, from that age untried in evil, from the very beginnings, he would display virtue and would have nothing in common with wickedness.
«Because before the child knows good or evil, he refuses wickedness, so as to choose the good.»
Again with the same words he hints at the same thought, and dwells upon the saying.
For since what had been said was exceedingly lofty, he confirms it by the continuity of the narrative.
For that which he indicated above, saying:
«Before he knows or chooses evil,» this he hinted at as he went on, saying:
«Before the child knows;»
and he uses an explanation again, saying:
«Good or evil, he refuses wickedness, so as to choose the good.»
For this alone was his distinctive excellence.
Wherefore Paul also continually turns it over, and John too, having seen him, proclaimed this, saying:
«Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.»
And he who takes away the sins of others was much more himself without sin.
And Paul, as I said before, continually cries this aloud.
For since he was about to die, lest anyone of the unbelievers should suppose that he was paying the penalty of his own sins, he continually brings his sinlessness into the midst, that he may show his death to be the ransom of our sin.
«Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more.»
«For in that he died, he died to sin.»
«Nor did he die even that death as one liable,» he says, «according to the account of sin, but on behalf of the common transgression of all.»
If, then, in this respect he was not liable in the former case, it has been demonstrated superabundantly that he will die no more.
«And the land which you fear shall be left forsaken from before the face of the two kings.»
That which the prophet continually does, this he has done here also.
After the prophecy he brings the discourse over to the history.
This we plainly demonstrated when we treated of the Seraphim, which he has done here also.
For having spoken of the good things that were to come upon the inhabited world, he thereupon turns the discourse to the king.
What is «shall be left forsaken»? It shall be untouched, it shall be free, it shall suffer nothing unpleasant, it shall not undergo the things of war.
«And the land which you fear»—concerning which you are afraid, concerning which you tremble—«shall be left forsaken from before the face of the two kings,» both the Damascene and the Israelite.
Then, lest by the prophecy of good things he should become more slothful, nor grow more slack because of the peace, he again braces up his soul, saying:
«But the Lord shall bring upon you, and upon your people, and upon your father's house, days which have not yet come, from the day that he took away
Ephraim from Judah—the king of the Assyrians.»
For by these things he signifies the onslaught of the barbarians, by which they tore up the city from its very roots, and taking them captive, departed.
And he foretells these things, not that they may come to pass, but that, becoming more sober through fear, they may ward off the threat.
But since neither by the good things—which they enjoyed beyond their desert—did they become better (that they enjoyed them beyond their desert, the disposition of the king and his surpassing unbelief made plain), nor were they changed by the threat of fearful things, but harshly resisted both the one and the other remedy of their benefit, he thereupon applies a deeper incision, cutting out the gangrene and excising those who were incurably sick.
«From the day that he took away Ephraim from Judah—the king of the Assyrians»? The barbarians came upon them, about to snatch them all away;
「從他奪去以法蓮離開猶大的那日——就是亞述王臨到的日子」?那些蠻族臨到他們,正要把他們全都擄掠而去;
7:276
but leaving Judah and the two tribes, they turned against Israel.
What he says, then, is this:
From that day, on which the ten tribes shall draw over to themselves the barbarian army, having severed it from you, and by the excess of their own sin shall summon it against their very selves and be carried away—from that day one must henceforth stand in dread and fear.
For advancing along their way, they will come against you also, unless you change your ways.
And he says: from that day he will bring them.
For the others were not captured at the same moment the Israelites were carried off, but a short interval of time elapsed between.
What he says, then, is this: that by the decree he would from that time forth have brought on those days;
那麼,他所說的乃是:按著那判決,祂本從那時起就要使那些日子臨到;
7:283
but God waited and was long-suffering, even though the desert of their sins from that time forth was demanding punishment;
然而神卻等候,並且恆久忍耐,儘管他們罪過所應得的,從那時起就已在索討刑罰了;
7:284
which he is wont to do in many places—when the appointed day has arrived, to delay and to draw back;
這是祂在許多場合慣常所行的,就是在既定的日子已經來到時,仍加以延遲、加以收回;
7:285
which is both the greatest token of his love for mankind, and the clearest proof of the ingratitude of those who are unwilling to make due use of his long-suffering.
This, then, he here also says: that from that time came the threat, from that time the sentence, from that time the God-sent wrath—so that by bringing the punishment to the very doors, he might rouse them to repentance and make them better, and after the capture of those others might set them in anxiety, lest, because some were carried off while others escaped, they should on this account grow more careless.
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the flies which shall rule over part of the river of Egypt.
You see how I was not speaking in vain, that wishing to increase the fear, he brandishes the threat from that day.
Indeed the following words make this plain, in which he heightens the fear by his speech—both by making known to them the armies which were most terrifying to them, and by declaring the ease of the assault, which shook them exceedingly, and by disclosing the density of the host, which above all things astounded their mind;
接下來的話語確實顯明了這一點,祂藉此言辭提升那懼怕,既向他們指明那對他們最為可怕的軍隊,又宣告那入侵之容易,這事極其震撼他們,並顯出那軍隊的密集眾多,這事尤其使他們心神錯亂;
7:290
and all these things he hinted at through what follows.
And it shall come to pass in that day, he says, that the Lord shall hiss for the flies.
Here he called the Egyptians flies, on account of their shamelessness and impudence, and because, continually being beaten off, they continually came on again and did not allow even a little breathing-space, but often caused them countless troubles—just as flies settle upon wounds, so these perpetually alighted upon their calamities.
These, then, God will bring, he says.
But he did not say 'he will bring,' but 'he will hiss,' displaying the ease of their coming up, and the irresistible nature of God's power, and that it suffices for him only to give the nod, and all things follow.
And fittingly he begins the threat first from these, of whom they had already received experience through their deeds.
And for the bee which is in the land of the Assyrians.
The Syriac and the Hebrew, as they say, do not read 'bees,' but 'wasps.'
For since they had not much experience of them, by the image of the wasp he cast them into great anxiety, disclosing through this creature their vehemence, their striking power, their capacity to retaliate, the bitterness of their wounds, the swiftness of their coming, and how hard they are to guard against.
And they shall come and all shall rest in the ravines of the land, and in the holes of the rocks, and in the caves, and in every cleft, and in every tree.
…of the nations, and the exceeding swiftness of the campaign; and next he tells also of the multitude.
They shall rest—not as those coming into a hostile land, but as those luxuriating in their own; not as those needing toil and labor, but as those about to meet with a manifest victory and to seize a spoil made ready for them.
They shall come and shall rest—which belongs to those who have conquered and set up a trophy, and after much sweat and slaughter take their rest.
And they shall not rest in the plains only;
他們也不單在平原上安歇;
7:304
but since the multitude was boundless and the land not able to receive the number of their bodies, both the ravines and the rocks and the mountains and the wooded glens and all things shall be covered with the barbarian bodies.
And indeed, even if they were not vehement, nor thus impetuous, the multitude alone would have sufficed to strike them with dismay;
誠然,即便他們並不兇猛,也不這樣猛烈,單單那眾多的數目就足以使他們驚惶失措;
7:306
but when both are present—so great a multitude and so mighty a power, and the hardest thing of all, the wrath of God commanding as general—what hope of salvation is left? And the phrase 'in every cleft and in every tree' is spoken hyperbolically.
For surely they were not going to rest upon the trees, but at once, as I said, he both hinted at the excess and kept to the metaphor of the wasps.
In that day the Lord shall shave with the razor that is drunken.
Having increased the fear from the armies, he again intensifies it, raising the discourse up to heaven, showing that it is not certain barbarian Egyptians and Persians, but God who is warring against the Jews.
By 'razor' he here means his unbearable wrath, which no one shall be able to withstand, coming on with ease and consuming.
For just as the hairs of the body could not bear the edge of the razor, but yield at once and give way;
因為正如身上的毛髮無法承受剃刀的鋒刃,反倒立時退讓、立時屈服;
7:312
so also the affairs of the Jews could never withstand that God-sent wrath, he says.
By a drunken razor, then, he indicates to us the wrath of God that is at its peak, that is filled full, the sentence that is completely brimming.
And 'beyond the river of the king of the Assyrians' means the region beyond the Euphrates;
至於「亞述王河那邊」,是指幼發拉底河那邊;
7:315
which was Judea and all Palestine, to those returning from Persia.
All these things, then, he will utterly destroy, he says, root and branch.
By 'head and hairs and beard and feet' he means the entire region, under the parable of the body, embracing in his discourse all their land—as also at the beginning he was saying:
Every head is turned to pain, and every heart to grief.
From the feet to the head there is no soundness in it;
從腳掌到頭頂,其中毫無完好之處;
7:320
not speaking about a single man, but comparing the entire region to one body.
This very thing, then, he here also says: that the whole land shall undergo a grievous punishment.
And the one thing he showed through the razor, the other through the image of the body, making clear that, more grievously than any razor, the decree borne from God will consume both the men and the produce of the land, and will leave it bare and desolate.
Then he indicates this desolation by means of another image.
And he does this so that the fear may remain at its height throughout the whole, and the anxiety may not fade away with the length of the discourse.
And to those who do not attend, what is said seems to be the announcement of certain good things;
在那些不留心的人看來,所說的話似乎是宣告某些美好之事;
7:326
but those who examine it accurately know that it is the proof of an intensified desolation.
For what does he say? And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall rear a heifer of the herd and two sheep.
And it shall be, that from their yielding abundance of milk he shall eat butter; for butter and honey shall everyone eat who is left upon the land.
These things indicate, as I said before, a great desolation.
For the land which bears wheat and barley, being made desolate of men, shall furnish abundant pasture to the sheep—and so abundant that, on account of the plenty of such a table, even two sheep and a single heifer suffice to provide fountains of milk to their owner.
So that the plentifulness of the good cheer of the irrational beasts is the greatest token of the desolation of men.
And the honey too hints at this;
那蜂蜜也暗示了這一點;
7:333
for bees are wont to make their haunt in desolate places, both where they may enjoy much pasture and where there is no one to trouble them.
And that you may learn that he is hinting at an intensified desolation, the following words make it plain.
…in that day, where there may be a thousand vines worth a thousand shekels, they shall become waste land and thorns.
With arrow and bow shall men enter there, because all the land shall be waste ground and thorns.
This too is a sign of great misfortune, when not the mountains and wooded glens, but the very deep-soiled land that enjoys much cultivation bears thorns.
For not without reason has he set down the price of the vines, but in order that he might display both the nature of the land and the great diligence of the husbandmen.
But nevertheless, those lands so flourishing, he says, and enjoying the hands of husbandmen, he will overturn into such desolation that they bear thorns instead of vines, and afford so great a fear to those entering that no one dares to enter naked and unarmed.
And this he says, showing the desolation of the place and the great haunting there of wild beasts.
Having therefore shaken their mind and worked upon them thoroughly with fear, he again relaxes it a little, mingling in the good things and the change for the better, so that from both sides they might learn the strength of God.
But on the fearful things he dwells, while having spoken the good things at once he passes on.
Why ever so? Because at that time they especially needed this rebuke of the remedy;
究竟為何如此?因為在那時,他們尤其需要這藥劑般的責備;
7:344
wherefore, having applied it lavishly so as to grant them a little breathing-space and by this means again to call them back to virtue, he also mingles in the good things, saying:
Every mountain that is plowed shall be plowed.
For just as in the wrath of God even the deep-soiled land shall be desolate, so also in the reconciliation again even the rugged land shall display the qualities of rich soil, receiving the plow and the seed.
And when these things come to pass, all that flows from them shall follow also: peace, freedom from danger, confidence, and the absence of fear, just as before.
For fear, he says, shall by no means come upon that place.
And it shall be, from the dry ground and from the thornbush, a pasture for the sheep and a trodden path for the ox.
And by these words again he hints at abundance, just as he also says as he proceeds further on:
Blessed is he who sows beside every water, where the ox and the ass tread.
For just as, when he wishes to portray a desolation, he brings the Sirens and the Onocentaurs into the midst of his discourse,
so, when he wishes to portray peace and security, he everywhere shows us the tame and domesticated animals appearing, those that join with us in the labors of farming; and by these he indicates what proceeds from them, namely agriculture and the rest of their service.
