Commentary on the Catholic Epistles 1

Greek original · 317 verses · some words can be tapped for a gloss

1:1
For just as men of the world, in the documents of their everyday transactions, wish to designate themselves by the ranks that belong to them, so also the apostles, at the beginning of their writings, count it worthy to designate themselves 'servants of God and of Christ.'
Accordingly, urging them onward toward the perfection that consists in courage and endurance, he fittingly calls them 'brothers,' and not 'children' or 'sons.'
Having sufficiently exhorted them to endure trials with joy, so that a proven work and perfect patience might come to be,
yet these things are brought to perfection for their own sake, and not as done for the sake of something else.
By a further admonition he undertakes to persuade them to accomplish rightly the tasks set before them, saying, on the ground of a promise, that the one who endures trial is blessed.
For he who thus contends athletically in the struggle will become a proven man, trained through all things;
因為那樣如角力士般奮力比賽的人,必成為經得起考驗、在凡事上受過操練的人;
1:7
and to the one who has thus shone forth out of grievous circumstances there shall be given the crown of life, prepared by God for those who love him.
Thus the one who, by enduring trial, despises hardships and even death itself, will receive the crown of eternal life in exchange for the transient life he despised.
You may inquire whether the crown of life that God has prepared for those who love him possesses any material substance—the things which God has prepared for those who love him, which, by reason of the greatness of their divinity, do not fall under sight or hearing, nor have they entered into the mere conception of man.
Since the Saviour's dictum is true, which says,
'Ask, and it shall be given you,' which he also confirms by declaring:
'Everyone who asks receives,' one might inquire how it is that some, when they pray, are not heard.
He who comes to the act of asking by the proper way, omitting nothing that contributes to obtaining what is earnestly sought, will assuredly receive what he has begged to be given him;
凡按著正當之道來到祈求這事上,並不遺漏任何有助於得著所切求之物的人,必定要得著他所懇求賜給他的;
1:14
but if anyone, having strayed outside the aim of the asking that was handed down, appears to ask, then, not asking in the manner he ought, he does not ask at all.
Therefore, when such a one does not receive, the saying is not proved false.
1:16
For likewise, when a teacher says:
'Everyone who comes to me for the sake of learning shall have knowledge of it,' we understand 'coming to the teacher' in a precise sense—that is, together with attending closely to what comes from the teacher, along with practising and studying these things.
But to the one who does not do so, it must be said:
'You did not come to him as you were urged to.'
Making it clearer who they are that seem to ask yet do not receive, the writer of the epistle has beforehand taken up those who ask contentiously and wrongly, for the sake of vain pleasures.
And indeed some, asking for divine knowledge and for the acquisition of virtues, do not receive;
誠然,有些人為著屬神的知識與德行的獲取而祈求,卻仍得不著;
1:22
and to these also it must be said that they did not count it worthy to receive the good things for their own sake, but for the sake of being praised on account of them.
But it belongs to pleasure-lovers also to delight in praises;
然而以稱讚為樂,也正是貪愛享樂之人的特性;
1:24
wherefore to these also it is not given, since they wish to squander upon pleasures the very things concerning which they make their request.
Since vice procures friendship with the world, but virtue friendship with God, virtue and vice cannot coexist.
He who loves the world through sinning is shown to be an enemy of God;
那藉著犯罪而愛世界的人,顯明自己是神的仇敵;
1:27
and likewise he who confirms his friendship with God through godliness is straightway found to be an enemy of the world;
同樣地,那藉著敬虔而堅固與神之友誼的人,也立時被發現是世界的仇敵;
1:28
wherefore, just as it is impossible to serve God and mammon, so also it is impossible to be a friend to God and to the world.
Indeed, then, when the Lord came to make friends of God of those who obey him, he cast a sword and division upon the earth;
的確,當主降臨,要使那些順從他的人成為神的朋友時,他就把刀劍與分爭撒在地上;
1:30
wherefore also he gives peace, not as the world offers it;
因此他也賜下平安,卻不像世界所給的那樣;
1:31
for the world, through the peace it gives, makes men subject to passions toward material things;
因為世界藉著它所給的平安,使人對物質之物動了情慾;
1:32
but the Lord, in bestowing peace, prepares friends of God;
但主賜下平安,卻是使人成為神的朋友;
1:33
so 'the world' in these passages must be understood as the sympathy toward things here below.
From Origen, out of his interpretation, on the matter of the foreknowledge of God.
For God, having foreseen the faith and conduct of men, rightly accomplished in them through the evangelical teaching, foreknowingly chose them also in Christ before the foundation of the world, then predestining them to be sons by partaking of the Spirit of adoption;
因為神既預先看見人的信心與行為要藉著福音的教導在他們身上得以成全,便按著預知,在創世以前於基督裡揀選了他們,那時就預定他們藉著分享兒子名分之靈而作兒子;
1:36
for foreknowledge is to be regarded as nothing other than the contemplation of things that shall be—which, once the things foreseen have come into existence, is no longer foreknowledge but knowledge.
Even, therefore, if those to whom Peter writes were 'elect according to foreknowledge,' yet the address is not made to them as now non-existent;
所以,即或彼得所寫信的對象是「照神預知蒙揀選」的人,這稱呼卻也並非是向如今尚不存在的人發的;
1:38
the underlying sense, therefore, casts out the myth concerning [pre-existent] natures.
If the inheritance is kept in the heavens for the faithful, certain persons hold a frigid opinion, supposing that they shall receive it in the Jerusalem below throughout a whole thousand years, imagining that they will take the prizes of the kingdom as [carnal] luxury;
既然那基業是為信徒存留在諸天之上,某些人卻持著冷淡無味的見解,以為他們要在下界的耶路撒冷、在整整一千年之久領受這基業,臆想要把國度的獎賞當作〔肉體的〕享樂來取得;
1:40
and these are to be asked how they can speak of bodily luxury as incorruptible and unfading, especially since they also circumscribe it, having it cease when the millennial year is over;
當問這些人:他們怎能把肉身的享樂說成是不朽壞、不衰殘的,尤其他們還把它限定起來,說千禧之年一過就止息了;
1:41
in addition to these things, one must join the sayings that make plain that the inheritance is in the kingdom of the heavens, and that it does not fall under [perception] because it is intelligible and beyond the sense-perception of mortals.
Since some rank the promise and salvation of the saints who lived before the sojourning of the Saviour as inferior, supposing that those who came after it possess something more, in that they saw the Lord with the senses and the signs wrought by him, it must be shown that their supposition is mistaken.
For how is Abraham inferior to any of those after the sojourning, seeing that he beheld the day of the Lord, and that all who are perfected according to the Lord depart into his bosom? And how are Moses and Elijah inferior, who appeared in glory together with the Lord when he was transfigured, merely because they did not see the Lord with the senses? For [Scripture] does not make the one who beheld the Lord according to the flesh preferable to those who possessed the intelligible sojourning.
Indeed, many of the heterodox concur with this mistaken opinion, having a longing to slander the Old Testament by every means;
的確,許多異端者附和這錯謬的見解,一心想用盡各樣方法來詆毀舊約;
1:45
and this too shall be said: that even if they did not see or hear with the senses the things which the Lord spoke, nevertheless they had a divine yearning for them;
還當這樣說:他們縱然沒有用感官見過或聽過主所說的話,卻仍對這些事懷著屬神的渴慕;
1:46
for 'many prophets and righteous men desired to see.'
If anyone should understand the salvation sought by the prophets to be in accordance with the End—that which is over all things and the last object of desire (for it is for its sake that all other things come to be, while it itself is for the sake of nothing)—it is not out of keeping to understand the matter before us as applying also to the holy angels and, simply put, to all the blessed rational beings, since all of them have a desire to stoop and peer into the things pertaining to the End.
If the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, what must one understand concerning the matter before us? For if it is the Father who is signified, how is he the judge who judges according to each one's work? But if the Son judges, having received all judgment, how is he the Father? To which it must be said:
if the Father and the Son are one Godhead, then when the Son judges, the Father is the one who judges;
若父與子是同一神性,那麼當子審判時,父也就是那施行審判的;
1:50
but the Son too can be a father of those brought into being, having begotten them by a participation in holiness;
然而子也能作那些受造者的父,藉著使他們分享聖潔而生了他們;
1:51
at all events, he often called his own disciples 'little children,' and to others he said—to the one:
'Child, your sins are forgiven'; and to another:
'Daughter, your faith has saved you.'
And these things refute those who sever the Godhead.
By 'the living and abiding word of God that remains forever' he means the evangelical word.
1:56
For when the Gospel says:
'Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away,' says the Lord Jesus Christ.
Just as the Lord, being the true light, came into the world for judgment, that he might give sight to those who were blind before his coming, but blind those who see amiss, so also, being a chosen and precious stone, he furnishes honour to those who are built upon him through faith, being shown to be their firm foundation; but to those who disobey through unbelief toward him he is not precious, but is reckoned a stone of stumbling and a rock of offence, an obstacle to the builders who set him at nought;
正如主既是真光,便為審判而來到世上,好叫那些在他降臨以前瞎眼的人得看見,卻使那些看得歪邪的人瞎眼;照樣,他既是蒙揀選、寶貴的石頭,就把尊榮賜給那藉信心建造在他上面的人,顯為他們穩固的根基;但對那些因不信而悖逆他的人,他不是寶貴的,反被看為絆腳的石頭、跌人的磐石,成了那藐視他之匠人的障礙;
1:59
and these are the scribes and Pharisees.
And when he says 'unto which also they were appointed,' it is not as though God had forced them into this very thing, but because they suffered this through their own wicked mind and base choice.
According to the ancient ordinance of the Law, the royal lineage was one thing and the priestly lineage another;
按著律法古時的規條,君王的世系是一回事,祭司的世系是另一回事;
1:62
after that ordinance the Gospel succeeded, teaching one and the same to be both priest and king;
在那規條之後,福音接續而來,教導同一位既是祭司又是君王;
1:63
for Christ is both;
因為基督兼具二者;
1:64
and these things being thus established, it is necessary that those sown by him—he being at once king and priest—should be a chosen race, being at once a royal house and a priesthood;
既如此奠立了,那由他所栽種的人——他既同時是君王又是祭司——就必然是蒙揀選的族類,同時是君尊的家室與祭司的體系;
1:65
for since he who begot them holds both the beginnings [of rule], of necessity they too, as from a king, are royal, and, as from a priest, are a priesthood;
因為那生他們的既兼有〔統治的〕兩種源頭,他們也就必然:既出於君王,便是君尊的;既出於祭司,便是祭司的體系;
1:66
wherefore also they are a holy nation, having been called by him who calls, who is holy, unto 'You shall be holy.'
These same, besides being a holy nation, are also a people for [God's] possession, having come to be outside all destruction;
這同一批人,除了作聖潔的國度以外,也是〔屬神〕所擁有的子民,已成為在一切滅亡之外的人;
1:68
for possession belongs to those who are taken to oneself, not to those who are cast out.
For since those called from diverse nations and customs have cast off all diversity in taking up one mind, attending to one faith and teaching—through which soul and heart become one—they are one holy nation.
Those who, through godliness, prove worthy of obedience are fittingly styled 'beloved,' since those who are longed for on account of something human are indeed loved, yet are not truly 'beloved.'
Since, then, I am so disposed toward you, to whom I write this epistle, I exhort and urge you to abstain from the pleasures that spring up out of the flesh;
既然如此,我對你們這些我寫信給的人懷著這樣的心意,我便勸勉並催促你們,要禁戒那些從肉體滋生的私慾;
1:72
for these wage war against the soul, harboring great enmity toward it, since the substance of the soul is one thing and that of the flesh another.
By 'human institution' he means the authorities that are appointed by kings;
他所說的「人的制度」是指那些由君王所設立的權柄;
1:74
to these, therefore, one must be subject for the Lord's sake;
因此,為主的緣故,人必須順服這些權柄;
1:75
but if we are subject for the sake of the Lord who said,
'Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,' then whenever they command anything contrary to the will of the Lord, let us not obey.
He does not command servants to have toward their masters that fear which is a mere passion — for such fear is irrational and exists even in irrational animals — but the fear that arises with knowledge and right reason;
他並不吩咐僕人對主人存那種只是情緒的懼怕──因為那樣的懼怕是無理性的,甚至在無理性的走獸身上也存在──而是那種伴隨著知識與正理而生的敬畏;
1:78
For he who fears his master on account of Christ and His teaching submits to him with reverence, in contrast to the one who fears his master because of wickedness and other torments, who has a merely passionate fear;
因為那為基督和祂的教訓而懼怕主人的人,是懷著虔敬順服他的,這與那因惡行和其他刑罰而懼怕主人、只存情緒之懼怕的人截然不同;
1:79
He uses this same sense also a little later when he speaks to the wives, saying:
'beholding' — that is, the husbands — 'your chaste conduct coupled with fear';
「看見」──就是那些丈夫──「你們在敬畏中貞潔的品行」;
1:81
for this usage is customary in many places of the divine Scripture.
He urges the wives to imitate the holy women, and especially Sarah, persuading them thus to be subject to their husbands as she was to Abraham, whose children he says they have also become through doing good;
他勸勉婦女效法那些聖潔的婦人,尤其是撒拉,如此勸服她們順服自己的丈夫,正如撒拉順服亞伯拉罕一樣;他又說,她們藉著行善也已成了撒拉的兒女;
1:83
wives have Sarah as their mother.
But consider the matter allegorically — how one becomes a child of Abraham and Sarah;
但你要按寓意來思想──一個人如何成為亞伯拉罕和撒拉的兒女;
1:85
according to the Apostle, Abraham had two sons, one by the bondwoman and one by the free woman;
按照使徒所說,亞伯拉罕有兩個兒子,一個是使女生的,一個是自主的婦人生的;
1:86
then, having led them up to the two covenants, he says a little later that she was born according to the spirit, calling the Jerusalem that is above the free woman;
接著,他把她們引申為兩約,並在稍後說她是照著聖靈而生的,稱那在上的耶路撒冷為自主的婦人;
1:87
'Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who travailed with you';
「你們要仰望你們的父亞伯拉罕,和為你們受生產之苦的撒拉」;
1:88
for it is not possible to refer these things to those persons;
因為這些話不可能是指著那兩位而說的;
1:89
for how could she who many generations before had received the death owed to nature still be in travail with those who lived in the prophet's time? Hence these words must be understood as referring to the mother of those born according to the spirit, the Jerusalem that is above;
因為她既在許多世代之前就已承受了那本性所欠的死亡,怎能還為那些活在先知時代的人受生產之苦呢?因此這些話必須理解為指著那些照聖靈而生之人的母親,就是那在上的耶路撒冷;
1:90
the women whom he urged, through doing good, to have Sarah as their mother.
'But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts.' Just as to magnify God does not signify bringing to Him an increase of greatness, nor does to glorify Him imply conferring on Him renown from without, so neither does to sanctify the Lord signify adding holiness to Him;
「只要心裡尊主神為聖。」正如「尊大」神並不表示為祂增添偉大,「榮耀」祂也不意味著從外界為祂帶來美名;照樣,「使主成聖」也不表示為祂增添聖潔;
1:92
which very thing we are commanded to do in our own heart;
而這正是我們被吩咐要在自己心裡去做的;
1:93
for if we should attain an accurate apprehension of His holiness, we do not sanctify Him once for all, but rather, in our heart, from this doing, there is added to our conception of God's holiness;
因為我們若能對祂的聖潔有準確的領悟,我們並非一勞永逸地使祂成聖,而是在我們心裡藉著這樣的作為,將對神之聖潔的認識不斷加增於我們的理解之中;
1:94
in the same way also he who magnifies Him receives into himself a participation in His greatness;
同樣,那尊大祂的人也把對祂偉大的分享接受到自己裡面;
1:95
'My soul doth magnify the Lord';
「我心尊主為大」;
1:96
'O magnify the Lord with me';
「你們和我一同稱主為大」;
1:97
in the same way, he who knows what belongs to glory glorifies himself unto Him;
同樣,那認識何為榮耀的人,也在祂裡面榮耀自己;
1:98
these things do not seem paradoxical to one who accurately understands that God does not receive but rather bestows good things.
For we must be so prepared for the knowledge of the faith that, being at every occasion asked for an account concerning it, we may readily give answer, and in answering may display gentleness and the fear of God;
因為我們必須為信仰的知識預備得如此充分,以致無論何時被要求為此作出解釋,我們都能從容應答,並且在應答時顯出溫柔和敬畏神的心;
1:100
for he who speaks the word concerning God ought so to speak as if God were present.
for indeed an action is praiseworthy then, when it is carried out with reasoning;
因為一件行為唯有在伴隨著思量而成就時,才是值得稱讚的;
1:102
for to think one knows something without understanding and examination brings blame;
因為在毫無悟性與省察之下自以為知道甚麼,是招致責備的;
1:103
for the knowledge of the uncomprehending is but muddled words.
When the appointed time has come to begin, the judgment of God begins to pass over from the greater to the lesser, that is, from the faithful who make up the Church of God;
當所定的開始之時來到,神的審判便開始從較大的臨到較小的,就是從那些構成神教會的信徒開始;
1:105
if the examination of deeds done in life begins first from us who are of the house of God, what end must one suppose there is for those who have disobeyed the gospel of God? He instills much struggle and fear in the faithful, so that they may securely learn who the Judge is, before whom they must give account;
審判既是首先從我們這些屬神家的人開始察驗一生的行為,那麼那些不順從神福音之人的結局又當如何看待呢?他在信徒心中激起許多爭戰與懼怕,使他們穩妥地認清那位審判者是誰,就是他們必須向祂交帳的那一位;
1:106
having roused these to the fear of Him, he urges on those who disobey the divine teaching, declaring that an inescapable punishment will befall such people, which he named their 'end,' as marking the limit of the disobedience they had;
他既激起這些人敬畏祂,就催促那些不順從神聖教訓的人,宣告一種無可逃避的刑罰必臨到這樣的人,這刑罰他稱之為他們的「結局」,因為它劃定了他們所存之悖逆的終點;
1:107
rousing them still further, he says:
if the righteous man scarcely obtains salvation, what must one suppose concerning the ungodly, who because of self-condemnation are not raised up unto judgment, and concerning the sinners who do not stand up in the counsel of the righteous? For the righteous is scarcely saved, being in anguish over how he has fulfilled the judgment concerning himself;
義人既僅僅得救,那麼對於那些因自我定罪而不被復起受審的不敬虔之人,以及那些不在義人會中站立的罪人,又當如何看待呢?因為義人僅僅得救,他為自己如何完成了與自身有關的審判而憂心;
1:109
for even if he is conscious of nothing evil in himself, yet knowing that not by this is he justified, until the Judge shall justify him, he is in anguish.
But he is one who is indeed embraced by God, yet in another respect despises and transgresses His laws;
然而他是這樣一個人:他固然被神所懷抱,卻在另一方面藐視並違犯祂的律法;
1:111
and if, in respect of the underlying subject, the same person should be both sinner and ungodly, he will have the difference only in conception;
倘若就其本體而言,同一個人既是罪人又是不敬虔的人,那麼這分別便只在於觀念上;
1:112
and it is possible for one who sins to be forthwith also ungodly, by acting impiously toward God through contempt.
'The heavens that now are, and the earth, being stored up by the same word' — this is likened to what happened at the time of the flood;
「現在的天地還是憑著那命存留」──這被比作洪水之時所發生的事;
1:114
just as the world that then was perished, being flooded by the heavens and the earth, so, when the heavens and the earth are dissolved into fire, the ungodly and the sinners shall utterly perish;
正如那時的世界被天地的水所淹沒而毀滅,照樣,當天地被融化為火之時,不敬虔的人和罪人也必徹底滅亡;
1:115
and this is the point of the likeness — that they perish together in the same way as those who perished in the flood;
這相似之處的要點就在於:他們一同滅亡,正如那些在洪水中滅亡的人一樣;
1:116
for 'as in the days of Noah,' says the Lord, 'they were eating, drinking, marrying, and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, and the flood came and took them all away, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be.' Speaking still further in confirmation that it will be so, he says that the day of judgment will come unnoticed like a thief, in which swiftly and without delay the heavens shall pass away while the elements are dissolved by the fire that is brought upon them;
因為主說:「挪亞的日子怎樣,他們又吃又喝,又娶又嫁,直到挪亞進方舟的那日,洪水就來把他們全都沖去,人子降臨也要這樣。」他為進一步證實事情必如此,就說審判的日子必如賊一樣悄然而至,那日諸天要迅速而毫不遲延地過去,眾元素也要被那臨到的火所熔化;
1:117
after which heavens have passed away with a great noise, there will be new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness and the promises of God have their dwelling.
Or he says this on account of the resurrection of Christ, inasmuch as through Thomas it was made known to all the apostles, He having raised up this very flesh which they nailed to the cross.
Each of the created things is said 'to be' something — for instance, to be an angel, to be the sun or the heaven — but the Savior alone happens simply to Be;
受造之物各各被說是「成為」某物──例如成為天使、成為太陽或天空──唯有救主是絕對地「是」那本體;
1:120
by participation in whom all things come into existence.
Having first received the hearing of this according to the introductory teaching, one comes to see Him scientifically after much exercise, which is called the 'handling' concerning the word of life, which said that:
concerning Him who was in the beginning we have heard through the Law and the Prophets, that He would come;
關於那位在起初就有的,我們藉著律法和先知已經聽見,知道祂要來到;
1:123
and when He had come manifestly, we saw Him with our eyes, having not carelessly given our assent to Him who appeared in the flesh;
祂既顯然來到,我們就親眼看見了祂,並非草率地就認同那在肉身中顯現的一位;
1:124
for after much handling on our part, searching the Scriptures that testify concerning Him, we believed the word concerning the Life.
The Life that was in the Father, having been made manifest to us, we have seen, he says — beholding it fittingly and having also heard concerning it;
他說,那在父裡面的生命向我們顯明了,我們就看見了它──我們得以恰當地看見它,並且也聽見了關於它的事;
1:126
bearing witness to this Life which has been made manifest, we declare also to you those things upon which it follows that you too should see it.
He writes that a message came to the disciples from the Savior Himself, declaring that God, being light, has no darkness at all in Him;
他寫道,有一信息從救主自己臨到門徒,宣告神既是光,在祂裡面毫無黑暗;
1:128
this message we bring to you also, so that you may have the same opinion concerning God among yourselves, as being light;
這信息我們也傳給你們,好叫你們在自己中間對神持有同樣的看法,就是認祂為光;
1:129
and God is an intelligible, eternal light;
神乃是可理解的、永恆的光;
1:130
for nothing sensible exists forever;
因為凡屬感官可覺的都不是永遠常存的;
1:131
in contrast to this light, we must understand the darkness to be ignorance and the most base condition;
與這光相對,我們必須將黑暗理解為無知和最卑劣的狀態;
1:132
since, then, neither of the two kinds of darkness — neither ignorance nor wickedness — is in God, it is fittingly said that there is no darkness at all in Him.
1:133
But if it is said somewhere:
'darkness His hiding place,' by 'darkness' in these words is meant the obscurity that lies in incomprehensibility;
「以黑暗為祂的藏身之處」,在這些話中「黑暗」所指的乃是那存於不可測度之中的隱晦;
1:135
and it is possible that the obscurity is our own ignorance, not indeed that of God, who is light.
In Scripture especially, 'to know' does not always signify to be acquainted with, but also to have had experience of something and to be united to it, as in the passage:
'I never knew you, you workers of iniquity';
「我從來不認識你們,你們這作惡的人」;
1:138
for 'He knew no sin' does not mean the not knowing what sin is, but the not having committed it.
He, therefore, who says he has known God — that is, has been mingled with Him and partakes of Him — has as a necessary consequence the keeping of His commandments;
因此,那說自己已認識神的人──就是已與祂融合並有分於祂──就必然地要遵守祂的誡命作為隨之而來的結果;
1:140
both senses of 'to know' are made manifest from the passage before us.
By this we know, that is, we understand, that we have come to know Him, in that we have been united to Him and keep His commandments; for he who does not keep them is manifestly outside the knowledge of God.
For he who does not keep them is manifestly found to be outside the knowledge of God.
Being the fullness of the wisdom and truth of God, He is thus said not to know the day of judgment.
He is not diminished thereby; for neither, when Scripture speaks of God as having forgetfulness, repentance, and wrath, is the Godhead diminished.
For by the same principle by which those things are explained, the saying that He does not know the day may likewise be resolved.
For just as, in the case of God who alone is wise and possesses the knowledge of all things, there exists no forgetfulness, repentance, or any such thing according to passion, but these are said of Him by way of economy (dispensation), so too, since the wisdom and truth of God does not admit of ignorance, it is said for some useful purpose that He does not know the hour and the day of judgment.
But truly he speaks of perfect love, from which nothing evil or deceitful can separate the one who is enfolded within it.
Perhaps someone will say: how is it possible to understand that the commandment written concerning love was from the beginning and had been heard by those to whom the epistle is written?
For they were not Jews, as the conclusion of the epistle makes clear.
For he says: little children, keep yourselves from idols.
May it not then be that the commandment which is old and exists from the beginning and has been heard by all men is the friendly disposition according to the natural notions?
For all men, being by nature gentle and social creatures, love their neighbors.
Whence the Savior, stirring up this natural disposition, says:
All things therefore whatsoever you wish that men should do to you, do you likewise also to them.
So that no one should suppose that the whole system composed of heaven and earth and the things in them is here presented by the word 'world,' he explained what the things in it are, so that we too might understand accordingly.
There is therefore also that which is in it: a passionate and material disposition signified through the lust of the flesh which wars against the soul, and the desire of the eyes.
It is possible, from the foregoing, to take it also concerning the visible world as no longer being loved by those who have risen above it, in that they no longer look to the things that are temporal but to the things that are eternal.
And since those who choose to spend their time in the love of this life handle sensible things with passion, it is fittingly said that the pride of life and the lust of the flesh and of the eyes are in it.
He who despises all these will be above the world, doing the will of God by abiding forever and loving God.
He says this because, having become disciples, they departed from the truth and devised blasphemies of their own contrivance.
He who has understood scientifically concerning God that He is just according to His essence will straightway have the knowledge that from this One is begotten he who practices His righteousness;
凡按著本質確切地認識神為公義者的人,立刻就會有這樣的知識:那行祂公義的人是從這位而生的;
1:162
just as he who has known Him to be sanctification gives himself over to being sanctified, knowing accurately the word:
You shall be holy, for I am holy.
And well too does he say 'doing,' but not 'having done' or 'about to do' righteousness;
他說「行」而不說「已行過」或「將要行」公義,這也是說得好;
1:165
for virtue, being practical, presents as just the one who is active.
No one therefore is just before the practice of it, nor is he who has ceased from acting according to it.
That God is just, Moses says:
The Lord is holy and just.
This One is the Father of the Savior:
Righteous Father, the world has not known You.
Being the Son of this One, as God from God and holy from holy, so also He is just from just.
The statement that He Himself is called righteousness does not contradict these things;
說祂自己被稱為公義本身,與這些話並不衝突;
1:173
for that which is such according to essence may be called righteousness and just.
Now we are children of God, that is, according to the present life.
Since the devil, having turned aside before all others, came to be in sinning, from him is named everyone who acts sinfully;
既然魔鬼在眾者之先偏離而陷入犯罪,凡以犯罪的方式行事的人便都以他為名而出於他;
1:176
for he takes the lead in the one who sins by the suggestion of wicked thoughts, as in the case of Judas.
But someone will say that the devil comes to be in those who sin, of those who have sinned before him, by their giving him a place;
但有人會說,魔鬼是藉著那些在他之先犯了罪的人給他留地步,才進入那些犯罪的人裡面;
1:178
in reply to which it must be said that to commit sin is the same as to sin by giving place to the devil;
對此當說:犯罪與藉著給魔鬼留地步而犯罪,乃是同一回事;
1:179
having been led on to give him a place by desire, after receiving him, he practically accomplishes sin;
人被私慾引誘而給他留地步,接納了他之後,便在行為上成就了罪;
1:180
for this is what 'to commit it' signifies.
And well too does he say 'doing,' but not 'having done,' since the one who has repented is no longer of the devil, but only the one who still practices it;
for so also it is the one who is doing sin, and not the one who has done it, that is a slave of sin;
因為照樣,那作罪之奴僕的乃是正在行罪的人,而不是那已行過罪的人;
1:183
for everyone who commits sin, he says, is a slave of it.
And he adds the reason for not being able to sin, saying that His seed abides in him;
But what is the seed of God that abides upon the faithful? Is it not the visitation of the Holy Spirit, through which we were regenerated, which does not depart from us, when, according to Paul, we do not grieve by shameful deeds the Holy Spirit of God, in whom we were sealed unto the day of revelation?
For when we say that he who has righteousness cannot do wrong, we do not indicate a natural inability, such as that according to which we say the irrational animal cannot possess knowledge or any other such thing.
If everyone who commits sin is of the devil, then by so acting he is shown to be a child of the devil, just as also Elymas the magician, from being full of all guile, was known to be a son of the devil;
若凡犯罪的都是屬魔鬼的,那麼他藉著如此行事,便顯明自己是魔鬼的兒女,正如行法術的以呂馬,因滿了各樣詭詐,就被認出是魔鬼之子;
1:188
and since everyone who is begotten of God does not commit sin, by having in himself the seed of God, one may clearly find the one who thus does not sin to be a son of God;
既然凡從神而生的都不犯罪,因為有神的種存在他裡面,那麼便可清楚地認出那如此不犯罪的人是神的兒子;
1:189
I added 'to the one who sins thus,' lest anyone should quibble by saying that we set down as children of God all those who do not sin;
我加上「那如此犯罪的人」這話,是免得有人詭辯說,我們把凡不犯罪的人都算作神的兒女;
1:190
for infants, who do not commit sin, are not to be called children of God;
因為嬰孩雖不犯罪,卻不可稱為神的兒女;
1:191
for it is from their age, and not from virtue, that they are hindered from sinning—unless we say something else, asserting that it is not sound to say of infants that they do not commit sin;
因為他們是因著年齡而非因著德行才被攔阻不去犯罪——除非我們另有話說,斷言論到嬰孩「不犯罪」乃是說得不確切的;
1:192
for not to sin is not the same as not to commit sin;
因為「不犯罪」與「不行罪」並不相同;
1:193
for the former is like a mere negation, while the latter proceeds from a disposition.
Since he who practices righteousness is begotten of God, and it follows for the one so begotten to love the brethren;
既然那行公義的人是從神而生的,而那如此重生之人便隨之要愛弟兄;
1:195
he who does not have righteousness by not practicing it, but hates his brother, is not of God;
那因不行公義而沒有公義、反倒恨他弟兄的人,就不是屬神的;
1:196
in no other way than by not having been begotten of Him.
For no heed is to be given to those who say that these are not of God on account of an earthy nature. For by 'world' here he means wicked men.
For just as, in the manner in which, before the coming of Christ, when there were prophets of God in Judea, many happened to be feigning prophecy, so that there was need of a discerning knowledge to determine which of those saying 'Thus says the Lord' had the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, and which, moved by an evil spirit, were prophets of falsehood; so also after the sojourning of the apostles who spoke in Christ and had the Holy Spirit which the Lord gave, many false apostles were put forward by the devil, feigning the evangelical teaching.
It is necessary to have that gift of the Holy Spirit which is called the discernment of spirits, so that we may have the knowledge to test the spirits, so as to believe the one and to withstand the other.
For there arose certain persons who said that the Lord had come down from heaven in the mere appearance of a man, whose opinions the Manichaeans confirmed.
It is no longer I that live, but Christ lives in me, through my having received Christ Jesus living in me, through my carrying about the dying of Jesus in the body;
「現在活著的不再是我,乃是基督在我裡面活著」,這是藉著我接納了那活在我裡面的基督耶穌,藉著我身上常帶著耶穌的死;
1:202
confessing Jesus Christ come in the flesh, not in that flesh which is His own alone, but also in mine.
The 'saying' here too must be understood in a practical sense;
此處的「說」,也必須按實際行為的意思去理解;
1:204
for many speak with the tongue alone.
Just as it brings accusation and blame upon the one who does not choose the choiceworthy and does not love the lovable, so the writer procures praise for those who love those worthy of being loved, namely, being beloved;
正如那不揀選當揀選之物、不愛可愛之物的人要招致控告與責備,照樣,作者也為那些愛那配受愛之人的人,即那些是蒙愛者的人,贏得稱讚;
1:206
But when is it possible for this to be brought about, except when the Savior takes away the sin of the world, so that the man may be shown forth, of what sort he was made by God, being demonstrated according to the likeness and image of his Maker? For thus the man, being made manifest, is at once beloved and worthy of being loved;
但這事何時才能成就呢?豈不是當救主除去世人的罪,好叫這人得以顯明,顯出他原是照著造他者的樣式與形像被神所造成的樣子嗎?因為這人如此顯明出來,就立刻是蒙愛的,並且配受愛;
1:207
since therefore the Savior who was sent to the world by the Father in love toward His own works came for the manifestation of the beauty of those made according to the image of God, those who have obtained this gift are beloved, whence they love one another;
既然那位因父愛祂自己所造之物、被父差到世上的救主,是為要顯明那些照神形像被造之人的美麗而來的,那麼凡得著這恩賜的人便都是蒙愛的,因此他們也彼此相愛;
1:208
for each one has both the being beloved and the being loving, since he has the commandment to love his neighbor.
If love is of God and God is love, who could be the one who proceeds from Him but the Word Himself? If therefore anyone has love, he has Christ in himself;
若愛是從神而出的,並且神就是愛,那麼那從祂而出的還能是誰呢,豈不就是那道自己嗎?所以人若有愛,就有基督在他裡面;
1:210
God is love; this one again knows love as being from God, which is to be considered no other than the Only-begotten, being, just as God from God, so also love from love.
Those born of God, by the very fact of living rightly according to virtue, are for this reason both children of God and His friends, just as Abraham was.
He who was born of God knew this, having believed that Jesus is the Christ; not by holding a bare assent concerning the apprehension of Christ is one born of God, but by that faith to which are yoked works according to virtue;
which faith Abraham also had, and it was reckoned to him for righteousness.
According to this signification we must understand the saying:
'A faithful man is hard to find.'
For such a man is rarely found, since many are those who, being without earnest works, have a dead faith, which is not faith at all.
He who has so believed as to be born of God has eternal life, as the Saviour says:
'He who believes in Me has eternal life.'
If then anyone is born of God by accomplishing the things spoken of, being worthy of acceptance, one must love him, yet even before him the One who begot him.
He says that the substance and, so to speak, the matter of the love one must have toward God is the keeping of the divine commandments;
他說,人對神所應有之愛的本質、可說是其質料,就是遵守神聖的誡命;
1:221
which commandments refer back to God the one who acts according to them;
這些誡命把那按著它們行事的人引歸於神;
1:222
wherefore they are neither burdensome nor heavy.
But if anyone, coming to them not in the way he ought, should call them heavy, he has blamed his own weakness;
但若有人以不當有的方式來到這些誡命面前,卻稱它們沉重,他所該責怪的乃是自己的軟弱;
1:224
for it is common for those who have utterly lost their strength to reckon as heavy even things that are altogether light and easy to bear.
His commandments are light; but
they are not heavy—not for anyone alone, nor for every one who grasps their upward-leading power, who justly pursues justice and has learned by experience that the yoke of Christ is light, possessing much kindness;
它們並不沉重——無論對誰都是如此,凡領受它們那引人向上之能、按公義追求公義、並藉經歷得知基督的軛是輕省、滿有慈惠的人,都不覺得沉重;
1:227
he who is so disposed is born of God, and having attained this, he despises the material life and the pleasures of the world;
這樣存心的人乃是從神而生的;他既得著這事,就輕看屬物質的生命與世上的宴樂;
1:228
and thereby he overcomes the world, passing from it into a supramundane citizenship.
Such progress will belong to the faith that is active and reckoned unto righteousness;
如此的長進,乃屬於那有功效、被算為義的信心;
1:230
which also, showing it to be subsisting and abiding, he named, saying:
'For this is the victory that has overcome the world—
our faith'—we who have accepted that Jesus is the Son of God.
Those who have learned by skilled experience how each of the good things they strive after is to be accomplished become full of good hope of achieving these also at another time;
凡藉著純熟的經歷學會如何成就所追求之各樣善事的人,便滿有美好的盼望,深信日後也能再次成就這些事;
1:234
since then the holy apostles, and the blessed John among them, knew by their very deeds that, having many times asked of God what was dear and pleasing to Him, they obtained it, they are confident that whenever they ask thus they will attain the things they long for, God granting it.
'He who asks receives'—the universal proposition meaning not simply all who ask even things that are not profitable, but those who ask according to the will of God, which the proposition comprehends;
「凡祈求的就得著」——這普遍性的命題並非指凡祈求的人、連那不合益處之事也一概如此,乃是指那些照神旨意祈求的人,這正是此命題所包含的意思;
1:236
such boldness arises in the one who has a blameless life;
這樣的坦然無懼,乃生於那過無可指摘生活的人;
1:237
for who shall boast that he has a pure heart? For few, so to speak, are those who are thus established in virtue;
因為誰能誇口說自己有清潔的心呢?可以說,如此立定於德行中的人是極少的;
1:238
'If I had beheld iniquity in my heart, let the Lord not hearken to me;
「我若心裡注重罪孽,主必不聽;
1:239
for this cause He hearkened to me, since I beheld no iniquity.'
But he passed it over in silence out of fear lest it be thought concerning him as of the one who said:
1:241
'But I am not thereby justified.'
1:242
You may add to the foregoing also the saying:
'If our heart does not condemn us, we have boldness toward God.'
For if being of God comes from doing righteousness, as we have often said, and at the same time it is impossible to sin and to do righteousness, it is therefore evident that one so disposed and so acting is righteous and does not sin;
因為,正如我們屢次所說,若「屬乎神」是出於行義,而同時犯罪與行義是不可能並存的,那麼顯然可見,這樣存心、如此行事的人乃是義的,並不犯罪;
1:245
then, safeguarding the point that man is a son of God by choice and not by nature, he fittingly added the saying:
'But he keeps himself, and the evil one does not touch him.'
For if the evil one does not touch him for this reason—that he keeps himself—then he has his not-sinning not from constitution but from watchfulness;
因為若那惡者不能害他,是由於他保守自己,那麼他不犯罪就不是出於本性的構造,而是出於警醒;
1:248
and one who keeps himself, what does he also pray to be preserved from God for? That he may remain wholly untouched by the evil one.
Having learned through many passages that wicked men are what is signified by the word 'world,' we are not superstitiously fearful, as the heretics are, lest the creation of God, being a 'world,' should be set in the evil one;
我們既藉著許多經文得知:「世界」一詞所指的乃是邪惡的人,我們就不像異端者那樣迷信地懼怕,唯恐神的受造之物既是「世界」便臥在那惡者之中;
1:250
the word 'world' is applied to men, as I said before, both here and in the Gospels:
'Marvel not if the world hates you.'
It is plain to everyone possessing understanding that in speaking of the world hating the saints He signifies wicked men;
凡有悟性的人都清楚看見,祂說世界恨惡聖徒,所指的乃是邪惡的人;
1:253
'They are of the world, and the world hears them';
「他們是屬世界的,世界也聽從他們」;
1:254
for in saying that the world hears those who speak deceitfully, He signifies not the creation but men enslaved to passions.
The understanding which He gave, by which the true Son of God who has come is known, is the same as the saying:
'But we have the mind of Christ';
「但我們是有基督的心的」;
1:257
he who has this understanding and this mind knows Him who is true according to essence, and is in Him, being united to Him in reality, having a real apprehension of Him.
But how is it that, having throughout the whole epistle borne witness to the perfection of those to whom he writes, he now exhorts them to keep themselves from idols? We answer, then:
since it was written to the whole church, and it was likely that in such an assembly there were some who had only recently departed from idolatry, it was for the sake of those that he inscribed the expression.
The present passage agrees with what was said in the first epistle, which runs thus:
'And we know that he who loves God keeps the commandments';
「我們也知道,愛神的人必遵守誡命」;
1:262
'If anyone loves Me, he will keep My commandments';
「人若愛我,就必遵守我的誡命」;
1:263
to walk according to the commandments is the same as to keep them;
照著誡命而行,與遵守誡命是同一回事;
1:264
for since the virtues that are practiced according to the commandments are active, he who has not gone outside of them walks according to them;
因為那些按誡命而行的德行乃是實踐性的,凡未離開它們的人就是照著它們而行;
1:265
and in this the keeping of them is the same thing;
在這一點上,遵守它們也是同一回事;
1:266
wherefore he who has ceased from acting according to virtue no longer keeps the commandments, nor does he any longer walk according to them;
因此凡停止按德行行事的人,就不再遵守誡命,也不再照著它們而行;
1:267
for he who advances in virtue walks according to the commandments, 'to walk' signifying progress, while 'to keep' them signifies the one who, having been perfected, keeps them after having walked according to the commandments;
因為凡在德行上長進的人乃是照著誡命而行,「行走」指的是長進,而「遵守」誡命則指那已臻完全、在照誡命行走之後而持守它們的人;
1:268
with this agrees what was said in an enigma, how Adam was placed in paradise to till it and to keep it—'to till' signifying progress in activity, and 'to keep' signifying the abiding in perfection.
He who thinks and acts according to the evangelical teaching abides in it, but he who acts and holds opinions contrary to it draws himself away from it;
凡照著福音的教訓思想並行事的人便住在其中,但那與之相悖而行、持相反見解的人便使自己脫離了它;
1:270
'I am your God'—he who is outside the right faith and the keeping of Christ's commandments is godless, having severed himself from having God; and since he who has drawn himself away from the divine instruction in the said manner is godless,
he who abides in it has both the Father and the Son;
那住在其中的人便兼有父與子;
1:272
for concerning the one who keeps His word, the Son said that He would come together with the Father to abide with him, since he has become a holy temple, built up out of the keeping of the divine commandments;
因為論到那遵守祂道的人,子曾說祂要與父一同前來,住在他那裡,因他已成為聖殿,是由遵守神聖誡命而建造起來的;
1:273
for 'having God' is twofold: the one is common to all creatures, signifying the same as 'having a Creator'; the other is left to those alone who serve Him through nobility of character, in which sense He is called the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, and in general of the Hebrews;
因為「擁有神」有兩重意義:其一是眾受造之物所共有的,與「有一位造物主」意義相同;其二則單單屬於那些藉美善品格事奉祂的人,按此意義祂被稱為亞伯拉罕、以撒、雅各的神,並且總括地說,是希伯來人的神;
1:274
attend also to the things that shall be thus spoken:
'He who has the Son,' he says, 'has the Father also,' and conversely, so that from this one is persuaded of the consubstantiality of the Godhead;
他說:「有子的,就連父也有了」,反過來也是如此,以致人由此得以確信神性的同質同體;
1:276
for since the Father is in the Son, he who has the Son has the Father also;
因為既然父在子裡面,有子的人就連父也有了;
1:277
but again it also is convertible:
he who has the Father has also the Son, who is in the Father;
有父的人也就有了子,因子在父裡面;
1:279
if anyone, wishing to raise an objection, should say:
'He also who has the disciples has the Son, and he who has the Son has the Father, according to the saying:'
'He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who sent me' — though not in the manner one who resists it supposes;
「接待你們的就是接待我,接待我的就是接待那差我來的」——然而並非如那抗拒真理者所以為的方式;
1:282
for these words were spoken concerning teaching;
因為這些話乃是就教導而言的;
1:283
since he who received the apostles, by assent to their teaching, received through them the Son and the Father as teachers.
For inasmuch as he who abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son, and the apostles abode in the teaching so as even to proclaim it, he who received them, they being a temple of God, has, through the very act of receiving them, the Son and the Father who are in them.
(...) Since there is no fellowship of light with darkness, nor concord of Christ with Belial, he who does good both in deed and in contemplation, having Christ as God who is the true Light, is far from the darkness and from Belial;
(……)既然光與暗毫無相交,基督與彼列也毫無相合,那在行為與默觀上都行善的人,既有基督為神、為真光,就遠離了黑暗與彼列;
1:286
but since doing evil is contrary to doing good, the evildoer, by the very fact of so acting, being of Belial and of the darkness, has not seen God, nor has he any measure of knowledge of him;
然而既然作惡與行善相反,那作惡的人,正因如此行事,便是屬於彼列與黑暗的,他既未曾見過神,也絲毫沒有認識祂;
1:287
for everyone who sins has not seen God, nor known him;
因為凡犯罪的都未曾見過神,也未曾認識祂;
1:288
and since seeing or not seeing a body is recognized by the use or non-use of sight — the sensible object being visible even to the evildoer, if he possesses sight, but unseen by one deprived of sight, even if he be a doer of good — it follows incontrovertibly that in those to whom he is at once revealed, if indeed he is beheld by the doer of good because of his having a pure heart even though he lacks sight, he is nonetheless unseen by the evildoer, however sharp-sighted the latter may be.
It is evident that these are contraries, and therefore cannot coexist — I mean doing good and doing evil — and this also from the text:
'Turn away from evil and do good,' and from passages written to like effect.
(...) Certain impious men, employing flattery together with sorcery in dealing with the divine teaching, crept in by feigning it — men foreordained, that is, foreknown, unto this judgment, which they incurred against themselves, being given over to a reprobate mind;
these, through their surpassing impiety being licentious men, turned the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ into lasciviousness, and by the very act of their lewdness denied the only Master, Jesus Christ, the Lord of those who were called through the gospel;
這等人因其極大的不虔而成為放蕩之人,把我們主耶穌基督的恩典變作邪蕩,並藉著他們縱慾的行為,否認那獨一的主宰、就是那藉福音蒙召之人的主耶穌基督;
1:293
then, in order to turn the faithful away from such wicked and impious men, he shows, so far as it is possible, the greatness of the Master whom they denied, by declaring that it is he who led the people out of Egypt, so as even to hold out salvation to them;
接著,為要使信徒遠離這等邪惡不虔的人,他盡可能地顯明他們所否認之主宰的偉大,指出正是祂領百姓出了埃及,甚至將救恩賜給他們;
1:294
but since some of them were fickle and inconstant, still bearing the harm they had contracted in Egypt, he destroyed them in the wilderness when they disbelieved, although they had been saved out of Egypt through faith;
然而既然他們中間有些人善變反覆,仍帶著他們在埃及所受的傷害,祂便在他們不信之時把他們滅在曠野,儘管他們曾藉信心從埃及得救;
1:295
may it not be, then, that these are the hypocrites of the divine teaching, the leaders of the heresy of the Nicolaitans, who overlook no form of licentiousness?
For the followers of Simon Magus too perform shameful — nay, exceedingly shameful — things, supposedly in a mystical manner;
因為西門行邪術者的門徒,也在所謂奧祕的名義下行可恥、極其可恥的事;
1:297
and besides these, the followers of Marcion and of Valentinus, and the Sethians.
(...) And since they practice shameful deeds under the pretext of religion, he said that they change the grace of the Lord into lasciviousness, by which lasciviousness and its works they deny the only Master and Lord of us, Jesus Christ.
(...) It has, at any rate, been said before this concerning him, that he is true God, this only Master and Lord Jesus Christ, who brought up the people out of Egypt through Moses;
(……)至少在此之前已論到祂,說祂乃是真神,就是這獨一的主宰、主耶穌基督,是藉摩西領百姓出埃及的那位;
1:300
it follows that the God of Moses is no other;
由此可見,摩西的神並非另一位;
1:301
for neither is there any other beside the Trinity;
因為除了三位一體之外,並無別的神;
1:302
wherefore Moses is seen to minister to him, according to the text:
'He wrote concerning me';
「他寫的是關於我」;
1:304
'We have found Jesus, of whom Moses wrote';
「摩西所寫的那一位,我們遇見了,就是耶穌」;
1:305
on which account also, foreseeing the cross spiritually, he counted the reproach of Christ to be the greatest wealth — none other than he who says:
'Far be it from me to glory save in the cross of the Lord Jesus.'
(...) Now the phrase 'foreordained unto this judgment' he uses in the sense of 'foreknown.'
(...) That is, 'foreknown,' just as, to be sure, the things concerning Judas were also written beforehand.
(...) He called them, then, 'waterless clouds' because they do not have the word of the Spirit which waters the God-loving souls, becoming in them a fountain of water springing up unto eternal life.
(...) He says this because, again, the righteous are compared to shady olive trees and indeed to fruit-bearing vines;
(……)他說這話,是因為義人又被比作枝葉蔽蔭的橄欖樹,也被比作結果子的葡萄樹;
1:311
he says, therefore, that these are certain fruitless and autumn trees, that is, bare of both leaves and fruits.
(...) Having put the soul to death by a licentious life and impiety, and by wicked doctrines;
(……)他們藉著放蕩的生活與不虔,並藉著邪惡的教義,把自己的靈魂治死了;
1:313
for since before their faith they had died in impiety, and then, coming to the gospel, they lived, but again, giving themselves over to impiety and pleasure, they died;
因為他們在信主之前已因不虔而死了,後來歸向福音便活了過來,卻又把自己交給不虔與情慾而死了;
1:314
on this account, then, he says that they have died twice.
(...) Even if, imitating their own leader Satan, who fashions himself into an angel of light, they too wish to transform themselves into teachers of truth — concerning whom it is said:
'among whom ye shine as luminaries in the world, holding forth the word of life';
「你們在其中好像明光照耀,將生命的道表明出來」;
1:317
yet nonetheless they are deceivers, falsifying the truth with the licentiousness of their blasphemies, and afterward they shall be punished with gloom and murk and darkness — which is the outer darkness — that which has been prepared for Satan and for his angels.
