Ascetic Works 1-1
Greek original · 326 verses · some words can be tapped for a gloss
1-1:1
OF EVAGRIUS THE MONK. Since you recently wrote to me from the Holy Mountain, while I was dwelling in Scetis, most beloved brother Anatolius, and entreated me to explain to you the symbolic habit of the monks in Egypt:
修士埃瓦格里烏斯著。最親愛的弟兄阿納托利烏斯啊,你先前從聖山寫信給住在斯凱提斯的我,懇求我向你解釋埃及修士所穿那具象徵意義的修道服飾;
1-1:2
for you considered that it is neither without reason nor superfluous, since it differs so greatly from the other forms of dress used by men;
你認為這服飾既非無意義,也非多餘,因為它與其他人所穿的衣著有如此大的差別;
1-1:3
come then, let us declare all that we have learned about this from the holy Fathers.
The cowl is a symbol of the grace of our God and Saviour, which shelters their ruling faculty (the nous) and cherishes their infancy in Christ, on account of those who continually strive to strike and wound them.
Those, therefore, who wear this upon their head sing in spirit these words:
"Unless the Lord build the house and guard the city, in vain has the builder laboured and he who tries to keep watch."
Such sayings produce humility and uproot pride, that ancient evil which cast down to the earth Lucifer who rose in the morning.
The bareness of the hands reveals the unfeigned character of their way of life;
雙手裸露顯明他們生活方式的真誠不偽;
1-1:9
for vainglory is terrible at concealing and overshadowing the virtues, ever hunting after the glory that comes from men and driving away faith.
"For how can you believe," he says, "who receive glory from one another, and seek not the glory that comes from the only God?" For the good must be chosen not for the sake of something else but rather for its own sake;
經上說:「你們既互相受榮耀,卻不尋求那從獨一之神而來的榮耀,怎能信呢?」因為善必須不是為了別的緣故,而是為善本身的緣故而被揀選;
1-1:11
for if this be not granted, then whatever moves us to the doing of the good will appear far more honourable than the deed itself—which would be most absurd, to think or say that anything is greater than God.
The analabos (scapular), again, which is wound crosswise about their shoulders, is a symbol of faith in Christ, which lifts up the meek, ever wards off whatever hinders them, and provides them with unimpeded labour.
The belt, which binds tightly about their loins, thrusts away all impurity and proclaims this:
"It is good for a man not to touch a woman."
The sheepskin cloak is worn by those who always bear about in their body the mortification of Jesus, muzzling all the irrational passions of the body and cutting off the vices of the soul by partaking of the good;
披在身上的羊皮外衣,是那些常將耶穌的死帶在自己身上的人所穿;他們箝制身體一切非理性的情慾,並藉著分享於善而剪除靈魂的諸惡;
1-1:16
loving poverty and fleeing covetousness as the mother of idolatry.
The staff is a tree of life to all who lay hold of it, and a sure support to those who lean upon it as upon the Lord.
Of these things, then, the habit is a symbol, as it were a summary of their realities;
如此,這修道服飾便是上述各事的象徵,彷彿是他們種種實際的縮影;
1-1:19
and these are the words which the Fathers ever speak to them:
"Faith, O children, is confirmed by the fear of God, and this in turn by self-control (continence); this is made unwavering by patience and hope, from which is born dispassion (apatheia), whose offspring is love; and love is the gate to natural contemplation (theoria physike), which is succeeded by theology and the ultimate blessedness."
Concerning the sacred habit and the teaching of the elders, let this much suffice for us at present.
But concerning the life both of praxis (the practical life) and of gnosis (the contemplative life) we now give an account—not all that we have seen or heard, but as much as we learned from them to pass on to others—having concisely divided the practical matters into a hundred chapters and the gnostic into six hundred and fifty;
至於修行的(實踐的)生活與認知的(靜觀的)生活,我們現在加以陳述——並非我們所看見或聽見的一切,而是我們從他們所學、足以傳給別人的那些——我們把實踐之事簡要地分為一百章,把認知之事分為六百五十章;
1-1:23
and some things we have concealed, others we have left in shadow, that we may not give what is holy to the dogs nor cast our pearls before swine.
But these things will be evident to those who have set foot in the same track as they.
BY THE SAME AUTHOR: THE PRACTICAL TREATISE, ONE HUNDRED CHAPTERS. Christianity is the teaching (dogma) of our Saviour Christ, composed of the practical, the natural, and the theological.
The kingdom of heaven is dispassion (apatheia) of the soul together with true knowledge of beings (of all that exists).
The kingdom of God is knowledge of the Holy Trinity, coextensive with the constitution of the mind (nous) and surpassing its incorruptibility.
Whatever a man loves, that also he by all means desires; and what he desires, that he strives to attain;
凡人所愛的,他也必然渴慕;凡他所渴慕的,他便竭力去得著;
1-1:29
and desire is the beginning of every pleasure, while sense-perception gives birth to desire;
渴慕乃是一切快樂的開端,而感官的知覺則生出渴慕;
1-1:30
for that which has no part in sense-perception is also free from passion.
Against the anchorites (solitaries) the demons wrestle stripped (face to face); but against those who practise virtue in cenobitic communities or in companionships, they arm the more careless of the brothers;
對於獨修者(隱士),眾魔赤身肉搏地與之較力;但對於那些在團體修道院或同伴群居中修德的人,眾魔則煽動較疏懶的弟兄來攻擊;
1-1:32
and the second warfare is much lighter than the first, because it is not possible to find on earth men more bitter than the demons, or who take upon themselves all their malice at once.
Concerning the eight thoughts (logismoi). There are in all eight most generic thoughts, in which every thought is contained.
First is that of gluttony, and after it that of fornication;
第一是貪食的思念,其後是淫亂的思念;
1-1:35
third, that of avarice (love of money);
第三是貪財(愛錢)的思念;
1-1:36
[fourth, sadness; fifth, anger; sixth, listlessness (acedia);] seventh, that of vainglory;
〔第四是憂愁;第五是忿怒;第六是消沉(厭倦、acedia);〕第七是虛榮的思念;
1-1:37
[eighth, that of pride.] That all of these trouble the soul or do not trouble it is not in our power;
〔第八是驕傲的思念。〕這一切是否來攪擾靈魂,並不在乎我們;
1-1:38
but whether they linger or do not linger, and whether they stir up the passions or do not, is in our power.
The thought of gluttony suggests to the monk a swift falling away from his asceticism;
貪食的思念向修士暗示:他將迅速從苦修中跌落、放棄;
1-1:40
depicting the stomach, the liver, the spleen, dropsy, a long illness, scarcity of necessities, and the lack of physicians.
It often brings him also to the remembrance of certain brothers who have fallen into these very sufferings.
Sometimes too it persuades those very ones who have suffered to approach the ascetics and recount their own misfortunes, claiming that it was from their asceticism that they became thus.
The demon of fornication compels one to desire various bodies;
淫亂之魔強逼人渴慕各種不同的身體;
1-1:44
and it presses more violently upon those who practise continence, so that, thinking they accomplish nothing, they may give up;
它更猛烈地壓迫那些守節制的人,好叫他們以為自己一無所成,從而放棄;
1-1:45
and, defiling the soul, it bends it down toward those acts;
它又玷污靈魂,使靈魂屈向那些行為;
1-1:46
it makes the soul speak certain words and again hear them, as though the thing were actually seen and present.
Avarice suggests a long old age, inability of the hands for labour, famines to come and diseases to befall, the bitterness of poverty, and how shameful it is to receive from others the things needed for one's necessities.
Sadness (lype) sometimes arises through the deprivation of desires, and sometimes also accompanies anger.
Through the deprivation of desires it arises in this way:
certain thoughts, anticipating, lead the soul to the remembrance of home, parents, and one's former manner of life.
And when they see it not resisting but following along and dissolving in pleasures of the mind, then, seizing it, they plunge it into sadness, on the ground that those former things no longer exist and can no longer exist throughout this present life;
當眾魔看見靈魂不加抵抗,反倒隨之而去,沉溺於意念中的快樂時,便趁機抓住它,把它浸沒在憂愁裡,藉口說從前那些事物已不復存在,且在今生再也不可能擁有;
1-1:52
and the wretched soul, in proportion as it was dissolved over the former thoughts, is by so much contracted and humbled over the latter.
Anger is a most acute passion;
忿怒是最劇烈的情慾;
1-1:54
for it is said to be a boiling and movement of the irascible part against one who has done wrong or seems to have done wrong;
因為據說它是怒氣(thymos,靈魂血氣部分)的沸騰與激動,發向那已加害、或似乎已加害於己的人;
1-1:55
and it savages the soul all day long, but especially in prayers it carries off the mind, mirroring before it the face of the one who has grieved it.
And sometimes, when it lingers and changes into rancour (resentment), it causes disturbances at night, wasting and pallor of the body, and the onslaughts of venomous beasts.
These four things, occurring after rancour, one may find accompanying many thoughts.
The demon of listlessness (acedia), which is also called the noonday demon, is the heaviest of all the demons;
消沉之魔(acedia,厭倦、灰心),又稱「正午之魔」,是眾魔中最沉重的一個;
1-1:59
and it besets the monk about the fourth hour, and encircles his soul until the eighth hour.
And first it makes the sun appear sluggish or motionless, making the day seem fifty hours long.
Then it forces him to keep gazing toward the windows and to leap out of the cell, to stare at the sun to see how far it is from the ninth hour, and to peer here and there in case some brother [should come].
Moreover it casts hatred for the place, for the very mode of life, and for the work of the hands;
此外,它還灌注對所在之地、對這修道生活本身、以及對手工勞作的憎恨;
1-1:63
and [it suggests] that love has failed among the brothers and there is no one to console;
並暗示弟兄之間的愛已經消退,無人可安慰自己;
1-1:64
and if, during those days, someone happens to have grieved the monk, this too the demon adds to the increase of the hatred.
It leads him also to a longing for other places, where the necessities are easily found and where he may take up an easier and more profitable craft;
它又引他渴望別處的地方,以為在那裡容易找到生活所需,可以從事更輕鬆、更有利的手藝;
1-1:66
and it adds that to please the Lord is not a matter of place;
它還添上一句:討主的喜悅並不在乎地點;
1-1:67
for everywhere, it says, the Divine is to be worshipped.
It joins to these the remembrance of one's own kin and of one's former manner of life;
它把這些連於對自己親人與從前生活方式的回憶;
1-1:69
and it depicts the long span of life, setting before his eyes the toils of asceticism;
它又描繪人生何其漫長,把苦修的種種勞苦擺在他眼前;
1-1:70
and, as the saying goes, it sets in motion every device, so that the monk may abandon his cell and flee the arena.
Upon this demon no other demon immediately follows;
繼這魔之後,並無別的魔立即跟來;
1-1:72
but a certain peaceful condition and unspeakable joy succeed in the soul after the struggle.
The thought of vainglory is a most subtle one, and it slips in upon those who do well, wishing to publish abroad their struggles and to hunt after the glory that comes from men; it conjures up demons crying out, little women being healed, and a crowd touching his garments;
虛榮的思念極其精微,它悄悄潛入那些行得好的人,意圖把他們的爭戰公諸於世,並獵取人所給的榮耀;它幻造出哀號的群魔、被醫好的婦人,以及爭相觸摸他衣裳的人群;
1-1:74
it foretells to him a priesthood besides, and sets those seeking him at his doors;
它還向他預言將來必得聖職,並使尋訪他的人擠在他門前;
1-1:75
and [it says] that if he be unwilling, he will be led away bound.
And thus, having lifted him up high with empty hopes, it flies off, leaving him either to the demon of pride to tempt him, or to that of sadness, which brings him thoughts contrary to those hopes;
如此,它用虛空的指望把他高高托起之後,便飛走了,把他撇下,或交給驕傲之魔去試探,或交給憂愁之魔——那魔則帶來與先前指望相反的念頭;
1-1:77
and there are times when it hands over to the demon of fornication the one who, a little before, was a bound captive and a holy priest.
The demon of pride is the cause of the most grievous fall for the soul;
驕傲之魔是靈魂最慘重跌倒的禍根;
1-1:79
for it persuades the soul not to acknowledge God as helper, but to consider itself the cause of its good deeds, and to puff itself up against the brothers as senseless, because they do not all recognize this about it.
Following upon this come anger and sadness, and the final evil—derangement of mind, madness, and the sight of a multitude of demons in the air.
Against the eight thoughts. The wandering mind (nous) is steadied by reading, vigils, and prayer;
對治八種思念。飄蕩的心智(nous)藉著誦讀、守夜與禱告得以安定;
1-1:82
inflamed desire is quenched by hunger, toil, and withdrawal (solitude);
燃燒的渴慾藉著饑餓、勞苦與退隱(獨處)而得以平息;
1-1:83
seething anger is stilled by psalmody, long-suffering, and mercy;
翻騰的忿怒藉著唱詩、恆久忍耐與憐憫而得以平靜;
1-1:84
[these being applied] at the proper times and in due measure;
〔但這些須〕在適當的時候、按合宜的分量施行;
1-1:85
for things done without measure and out of season are short-lived;
因為無度且不合時宜地行事,是不能持久的;
1-1:86
and what is short-lived is harmful rather than beneficial.
Whenever our soul craves various foods, then let it be straitened with bread and water, that it may become thankful even over a bare morsel;
每逢我們的靈魂貪求各樣食物時,就讓它受制於餅與水的限制,好叫它即使對著一塊乾餅也能心存感恩;
1-1:88
for satiety desires varied dishes, but hunger reckons satiety with bread to be blessedness.
The lack of water contributes greatly to chastity;
缺水大大有助於貞潔;
1-1:90
and let the three hundred Israelites with Gideon, who overcame Midian, persuade you of this.
As it is impossible for life and death to coexist in the same person, so it is impossible for love to coexist in anyone together with riches;
正如生與死不可能同存於同一人身上,照樣,愛也不可能與財富同存於任何人身上;
1-1:92
for love is destructive not only of riches but even of our own transitory life.
He who flees all worldly pleasures is a tower inaccessible to the demon of sadness;
凡逃避一切屬世快樂的人,便是憂愁之魔所無法攻入的高臺;
1-1:94
for sadness is the deprivation of a pleasure, whether present or expected;
因為憂愁乃是某種快樂被奪去——無論那快樂是現有的,還是所盼望的;
1-1:95
and it is impossible to repel this enemy while we have an attachment to anything earthly;
只要我們對任何屬地之物仍有貪戀,就不可能擊退這仇敵;
1-1:96
for there it sets its snare and works its sadness, where it sees us most inclined.
Anger and hatred increase the irascible part (thymos);
忿怒與憎恨增長怒氣(thymos,靈魂的血氣部分);
1-1:98
but almsgiving and gentleness diminish even that which is present.
Let not the sun go down upon our wrath, lest the demons, coming upon us by night, terrify the soul and make the mind more cowardly for the next day's warfare;
不可含怒到日落,免得眾魔在夜間臨到我們,驚嚇靈魂,使心智在次日的爭戰中更為怯懦;
1-1:100
for fearful apparitions naturally arise out of the disturbance of the irascible part;
因為可怕的幻象,本就出於怒氣部分的攪動而生;
1-1:101
and nothing else so makes the mind a deserter as a disturbed irascible part.
Whenever the irascible part of our soul, fastening on some pretext, is thrown into turmoil, then the demons also suggest to us withdrawal (flight) as something good, so that, not resolving the causes of our sadness, we may not free ourselves from the disturbance.
But whenever the concupiscible part is heated up, then again they make us "lovers of men" (sociable), calling us hard and savage, so that, desiring bodies, we may keep company with bodies.
Rather, we ought to do the contrary.
Do not give yourself over to the thought of anger by fighting in your mind with the one who has grieved you;
不要任憑自己陷入忿怒的思念,在心裡與那令你傷痛的人爭鬥;
1-1:106
nor again to that of fornication by imagining the pleasure at length;
也不要陷入淫亂的思念,久久地幻想那快樂;
1-1:107
for the one darkens the soul, and the other invites it to the burning of the passion;
因為前者使靈魂昏暗,後者則勾引它落入情慾的焚燒;
1-1:108
and both make your mind defiled;
兩者都使你的心智沾染污穢;
1-1:109
and, imagining these images at the time of prayer and not offering pure prayer to God, you straightway fall in with the demon of listlessness (acedia);
於是你在禱告時幻想這些影像,未能向神獻上純潔的禱告,便立刻遭遇消沉之魔(acedia);
1-1:110
which especially leaps upon such conditions and, like a dog, snatches the soul as one snatches a fawn.
It is the nature of the irascible part (thymos) to fight against the demons and to struggle for any pleasure whatsoever.
Wherefore the angels, suggesting to us spiritual pleasure and the blessedness that comes from it, exhort us to turn the irascible part against the demons;
因此,眾天使向我們暗示屬靈的快樂與由此而來的福樂,勸勉我們把怒氣轉向眾魔;
1-1:113
but the demons, in turn, dragging us toward worldly desires, force the irascible part, contrary to nature, to fight against men, so that the mind, being darkened and falling from knowledge, may become a traitor to the virtues.
Take heed to yourself, lest you ever drive away one of the brothers by provoking him, and so you will not escape, all your life, the demon of sadness, which will always be a stumbling-block to you at the time of prayer.
Gifts extinguish rancour (the remembrance of wrongs);
禮物能熄滅積怨(懷記前嫌);
1-1:116
and let Jacob persuade you, who came up to Esau with gifts when he went out to meet him with four hundred men.
But we, being poor, let us fulfil the need by hospitality of the table.
Whenever we fall in with the demon of listlessness, then, dividing the soul with tears, let us make one part the comforter and the other the comforted, sowing good hopes in ourselves and chanting over ourselves the words of holy David:
"Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why do you trouble me? Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him,
「我的心哪,你為何憂悶?為何在我裡面煩躁?應當仰望神,因我還要稱讚祂;
1-1:120
the salvation of my countenance and my God."
One ought not, at the time of temptations, to abandon the cell by fabricating seemingly reasonable pretexts, but to sit within and endure, and nobly to receive all who come, but especially the demon of listlessness, who, being the heaviest of all, renders the soul most tried and proven.
For to flee such struggles and to evade them teaches the mind to be unskilled, cowardly, and a runaway.
Our holy and most practical teacher used to say:
the monk ought always so to prepare himself as one about to die tomorrow, and again so to treat the body as one who will live with it for many years.
For the former, he said, cuts off the thoughts of listlessness and makes the monk more zealous;
他說,因為前者剪除消沉的思念,使修士更加殷勤;
1-1:126
while the latter keeps the body sound and always preserves its self-control in due measure.
It is difficult to escape the thought of vainglory;
要逃脫虛榮的思念是困難的;
1-1:128
for what you do to demolish it becomes for you the beginning of another vainglory.
Not against every right thought of ours do the demons set themselves in opposition, but against some these very vices oppose us, the vices according to which we have been formed (habituated).
I have known the demon of vainglory to be driven out by almost all the demons, and shamelessly to stand by at the falls of those who drove it out, and to display to the monk the greatness of his virtues.
He who has touched knowledge (gnosis) and reaps the pleasure that comes from it will no longer be persuaded by the demon of vainglory, even when it offers him all the pleasures of the world;
凡已觸及知識(gnosis)並享受由此而來之樂的人,便不再受虛榮之魔的勸誘,縱使那魔把世上一切快樂都獻給他,也是枉然;
1-1:132
for what greater thing could it promise than spiritual contemplation? But as long as we are without taste of knowledge, let us eagerly work at the practical life, showing God our aim, that we do all things for the sake of the knowledge of Him.
Remember your former life and your ancient transgressions, and how, being subject to passion, by the mercy of Christ you passed over to dispassion, and how again you came out of the world that so often and so greatly humbled you.
1-1:134
Consider for me also this:
who it is that guards you in the desert, and who it is that drives away the demons gnashing their teeth against you.
For such thoughts produce humility and do not admit the demon of pride.
Concerning the passions. Those things whose memories we hold with passion, their realities also we first received with passion;
論諸情慾。凡是我們帶著情慾去記憶的事物,我們起初也是帶著情慾去接受其實際的;
1-1:138
and again, whatever realities we receive with passion, of these too we shall have memories filled with passion.
Hence he who has conquered the demons that act upon him despises the things acted upon by them;
因此,凡勝過那作用於己之眾魔的人,便輕看那些被眾魔所利用之物;
1-1:140
for the immaterial warfare is harder than the material.
The passions of the soul take their occasions from men;
靈魂的諸情慾,其誘因出於人;
1-1:142
those of the body, from the body;
身體的諸情慾,其誘因出於身體;
1-1:143
and the passions of the body are cut off by continence, those of the soul by spiritual love.
Those who preside over the passions of the soul persist until death;
那些主掌靈魂諸情慾的魔,持續攻擊直到人死;
1-1:145
but those over the bodily passions retreat more quickly;
但那些主掌身體諸情慾的魔,卻較快退去;
1-1:146
and the other demons resemble the rising or setting sun, fastening on some one part of the soul;
其餘的眾魔好像初升或西沉的太陽,只攀附於靈魂的某一個部分;
1-1:147
but the noonday demon is wont to encompass the whole soul and to choke the mind.
Therefore withdrawal (solitude) is sweet after the emptying out of the passions;
因此,在諸情慾被倒空之後,退隱(獨處)便是甘甜的;
1-1:149
for then the memories are only bare;
因為那時種種記憶都只是空洞的(不帶情慾的);
1-1:150
and the wrestling no longer prepares the monk for struggle, but for the contemplation of it (of solitude).
Whether thought stirs the passions or the passions stir thought is a question to be considered;
究竟是意念激動情慾,還是情慾激動意念,這是須加思考的問題;
1-1:152
for to some the former seemed true, to others the latter.
The passions are naturally set in motion by the senses;
諸情慾本就藉著感官而被激動;
1-1:154
and when love and continence are present, they will not be moved; but when these are absent, they will be moved;
當愛與節制存在時,諸情慾便不會被激動;但這二者缺席時,便會被激動;
1-1:155
and the irascible part needs more remedies than the concupiscible, and for this reason love is called great, because it is the bridle of the irascible part;
怒氣部分比慾望部分需要更多的良藥,正因如此,愛被稱為偉大,因為它是怒氣的轡頭;
1-1:156
and this love that holy Moses symbolically named "the serpent-fighter" (ophiomachos) in his treatise on natural things.
At the prevailing foul stench among the demons, the soul is wont to be inflamed toward [evil] thoughts, when, as they draw near, it perceives them, being itself conformed to the passion of the one that troubles it.
Counsels. It is not possible at every season to fulfil the customary rule, but one must attend to the occasion and try to do, as far as possible, those commandments that the circumstances allow;
勸言。並非在每個時節都能履行慣常的規程,人必須留意時機,盡力去行那些情境所容許的誡命;
1-1:159
for the demons themselves are not ignorant of such occasions.
Hence, moving against us, they hinder what can be done and compel us to do what cannot be done;
因此,它們起來攻擊我們,攔阻那能行的事,又逼我們去行那不能行的事;
1-1:161
for they hinder the sick from giving thanks in their pains and from being long-suffering toward those who serve them;
它們攔阻患病的人在痛苦中感恩,攔阻他們對服事自己的人恆久忍耐;
1-1:162
and again they urge those who are exhausted to practise continence, and those who are weighed down to stand and sing psalms.
Whenever we are constrained to spend a little time in cities or villages, then most of all let us hold to continence more strictly while mingling with worldly people, lest our mind, becoming coarse and deprived of its accustomed care because of the present occasion, do something unwished-for and become a fugitive, struck down by the demons.
Do not, when tempted, set yourself to pray before first speaking some words in anger against the one who afflicts you;
你受試探時,不要在尚未先向那苦待你之魔說幾句斥責的話之前就去禱告;
1-1:165
for, your soul being conformed to the thoughts, it comes about that your prayer is not even pure;
因為你的靈魂既已被那些思念所同化,結果連你的禱告也不純潔了;
1-1:166
but if you speak something against them in anger, you confound and obliterate the conceptions of the adversaries.
For this is what anger naturally works, even upon better conceptions.
One must also recognize the differences among the demons and note their seasons;
人也必須認識眾魔之間的差別,並留意它們各自出沒的時機;
1-1:169
and we shall know from the thoughts, and the thoughts from the deeds, which of the demons are rare and heavier, and which are frequent and lighter, and which are those that suddenly leap in and snatch the mind toward blasphemy.
These things it is necessary to know, so that when the thoughts begin to stir up their own materials, before we are cast far out of our proper state, we may say something against them and identify the one that is present;
這些事必須知道,好叫當那些思念開始攪動它們各自的材料時,我們在尚未被遠遠拋出本有的安穩境界之前,能向它們說幾句話,並指認出當下臨到的是哪一個;
1-1:171
thus we make progress, and make those [demons] marvel at us and fly off in anguish.
Whenever, in their struggle against the monks, the demons are unable [to prevail], then, withdrawing a little, they watch to see which of the virtues has in the meantime been neglected, and, suddenly attacking by way of that one, they plunder the wretched soul.
The wicked demons draw to their aid demons more wicked than themselves;
邪惡的眾魔召來比它們更邪惡的魔來相助;
1-1:174
and though opposed to one another in their dispositions, they agree only for the destruction of the soul.
Let not the demon disturb us who snatches the mind toward blasphemy of God and toward those forbidden fantasies which I myself have not even dared to commit to writing; nor let it cut off our zeal;
那把心智攫向褻瀆神、攫向我自己連寫下都不敢的那些禁忌幻象之魔,斷不可使我們慌亂,也不可斷送我們的熱忱;
1-1:176
for the Lord is the knower of hearts, and He knows that not even when we were in the world did we ever rage with such madness.
The aim of this demon is to make us cease from prayer, so that we may not stand before the Lord our God, nor dare to stretch out our hands against Him concerning whom we have entertained such thoughts.
Of the sufferings in the soul there comes a sign, either some word that is uttered or some movement of the body that occurs, by which the enemies perceive whether we still hold their thoughts within and are in travail over them, or whether, having cast them off, we are concerned about our salvation.
For God alone, who made us, knows the mind, and He needs no signs in order to know the things hidden in the heart.
Against worldly people the demons wrestle rather by means of things (deeds); but against the monks, for the most part, by means of thoughts;
對付世俗之人,眾魔多藉著外物(行為)來較力;對付修士,則大多藉著思念;
1-1:181
for because of the desert they are deprived of things.
And as much easier as it is to sin in thought than in deed, by so much harder also is the warfare in thought than that which is mounted by means of things;
而在意念中犯罪比在行為上犯罪容易多少,藉意念進行的爭戰也就比藉外物進行的爭戰艱難多少;
1-1:183
for the mind is a thing easily moved and hard to restrain from lawless fantasies.
We are not commanded to work continually, to keep vigil, and to fast; but to pray without ceasing has been laid down for us as law;
我們並未受命要不住地勞作、守夜、禁食;但「不住地禱告」卻已立為我們的律法;
1-1:185
because those former things, which heal the passible part of the soul, also require our body for their accomplishment, and the body, through its own weakness, is not sufficient for the toils;
因為前面那些事雖醫治靈魂受苦的部分,卻也需要我們的身體去成就,而身體因自身的軟弱,並不足以承擔那些勞苦;
1-1:186
but prayer makes the mind vigorous and pure for the struggle, the mind being by nature able to pray even apart from this body and to fight against the demons on behalf of all the powers of the soul.
If any of the monks wishes to make trial of the savage demons and to gain experience of their craft, let him observe the thoughts, and note their intensifications and their relaxations, their interweavings, and their times; and which of the demons do this, and which demon follows which, and which does not follow which;
若有修士願試煉那些凶猛的眾魔、熟習它們的伎倆,就讓他觀察種種思念,記下它們的加劇與緩和、它們的交織、它們的時機;又分辨哪些魔在作這事,哪一魔跟在哪一魔之後,哪一魔不跟在哪一魔之後;
1-1:188
and let him seek from Christ the explanations (logoi) of these things.
For [the demons] are greatly enraged at those who pursue the practical life more gnostically (with deeper understanding), wishing to shoot down in the darkness those who are upright in heart.
Observing closely, you will find two of the demons to be the swiftest, all but outrunning the movement of our mind:
the demon of fornication, and the one that snatches us toward blasphemy of God;
就是淫亂之魔,以及那把我們攫向褻瀆神的魔;
1-1:192
but the second is short-lived, while the first, if it does not stir the thoughts with passion, will not hinder us with respect to the knowledge of God.
To separate body from soul belongs only to Him who bound them together;
把身體與靈魂分開,唯獨在於那位把二者結合在一起的主;
1-1:194
but to separate soul from body belongs also to him who longs for virtue.
For our Fathers call withdrawal (anachoresis) a meditation on death and a flight from the body.
Those who badly nourish the flesh and make provision for it unto desires, let them blame themselves and not the flesh;
那些不當地縱養肉體、為肉體安排以遂私慾的人,當責怪自己,而非責怪肉體;
1-1:197
for they know the grace of the Creator who have acquired the dispassion of the soul through this very body and have to some degree applied themselves to the contemplation of beings.
Concerning what happens in sleep. Whenever, in the fantasies of sleep, the demons make war upon the concupiscible part—they themselves displaying, and we running toward, meetings with acquaintances, banquets of kinsfolk, choirs of women, and whatever else is productive of pleasures—then we are sick in this part, and the passion prevails.
But whenever again they throw the irascible part into confusion, forcing us to travel precipitous roads, bringing on armed men and venomous, flesh-eating beasts—and we are terrified at the roads, and flee, pursued by the beasts and the men—then let us take thought for the irascible part, and, calling upon Christ in our vigils, let us use the aforesaid remedies.
The natural movements of the body in sleep that are without images indicate that the soul is to some extent healthy;
睡眠中身體那些不帶影像的自然活動,表明靈魂在某種程度上是健康的;
1-1:201
but the congealing (fixing) of images is a token of sickness;
但種種影像的凝結(固著)卻是患病的徵兆;
1-1:202
and regard the indefinite faces as a symbol of an old passion, but the defined ones as a symbol of a wound received just now.
The tokens of dispassion (apatheia) we shall come to recognize by day through the thoughts, and by night through the dreams;
無情慾(不動心)的種種徵兆,我們將在白晝藉著思念、在夜間藉著夢境來認識;
1-1:204
and we shall say that dispassion is the health of the soul, and that knowledge is its food, which alone is wont to join us to the holy powers;
我們要說,無情慾乃是靈魂的健康,而知識乃是靈魂的食糧,唯有知識慣常使我們與聖潔的諸天使能力相聯結;
1-1:205
since the conjunction with incorporeal beings naturally comes about from a like disposition.
Concerning the condition that approaches dispassion. There are two peaceful conditions of the soul: one that is yielded up from the natural seeds, and another that comes about from the withdrawal of the demons;
論那臨近無情慾的境況。靈魂有兩種平安的境況:一種是從本性的種子所結出的,另一種則是因眾魔退去而產生的;
1-1:207
and the former is followed by humility together with compunction, and tears, and boundless longing toward the Divine, and immeasurable zeal for the work;
前者隨之而來的是謙卑,連同痛悔、眼淚、對神無限的渴慕,以及對〔修道之〕工不可測度的熱忱;
1-1:208
but the latter [is followed] by vainglory together with pride, which, by the destruction (driving off) of the remaining demons, drags the monk down.
He, therefore, who keeps the boundaries of the former condition will more keenly recognize the onslaughts of the demons.
The demon of vainglory is opposed to the demon of fornication, and it is among things impossible for these two to assault the soul at the same time;
虛榮之魔與淫亂之魔彼此對立,這二者同時攻擊靈魂乃是不可能的事;
1-1:211
since the one promises honours, while the other is the cause of dishonour.
Whichever of these two, then, draws near and presses upon you, fashion within yourself, as it were, the thoughts of the opposing demon;
因此,這二者之中無論哪一個靠近、壓迫你,你就在自己裡面彷彿塑造出那對立之魔的思念;
1-1:213
and if you are able, as the saying goes, to knock out one nail with another nail, know that you are near the boundaries of dispassion;
你若能如俗話所說「以釘拔釘」,就當知道你已臨近無情慾的境界;
1-1:214
for your mind has been strong enough to make demonic thoughts vanish by human thoughts.
But to repel the thought of vainglory through humility, or that of fornication through chastity, would be a token of the deepest dispassion.
And try to do this in the case of all the demons that are opposed to one another;
對於一切彼此對立的眾魔,你都要設法這樣行;
1-1:217
for at the same time you will also come to know by which passion you have more been formed.
Nevertheless, with all your power, ask of God to ward off the enemies by the second way.
The more the soul advances, the greater are the adversaries that succeed in confronting it;
靈魂愈長進,前來與之對敵的仇敵也就愈強大;
1-1:220
for I am not persuaded that the same demons always remain with it;
因為我不信總是同一批魔常與靈魂相伴;
1-1:221
and this those especially know who apply themselves more keenly to the temptations, and who see the dispassion that is present in them being pried loose by those that succeed [the earlier demons].
Perfect dispassion comes to be in the soul after the victory over all the demons that oppose the practical life;
完全的無情慾,是在勝過一切敵擋實踐生活之眾魔之後,才臨到靈魂的;
1-1:223
but imperfect dispassion is so called with respect, for the time being, to the power of the demon that is still wrestling with it.
The mind will not go forth, nor make that good journey abroad, nor come to be in the country of the incorporeal beings, unless it has first set right the things within;
心智斷不能前行,不能踏上那美好的遠遊,也不能進入無形眾靈的境地,除非它先把內裡的事整頓妥當;
1-1:225
for the turmoil of the things at home is wont to turn it back toward the things from which it had gone out.
Both the virtues and the vices make the mind blind:
1-1:227
the former, so that it may not see the vices;
前者使它看不見諸惡;
1-1:228
the latter, so that it may not, in turn, see the virtues.
Concerning the symbols of dispassion. Whenever the mind begins to make its prayers undistractedly, then the whole warfare, night and day, is concentrated about the irascible part of the soul.
A token of dispassion: a mind that has begun to see its own light, and that remains tranquil before the apparitions in sleep, and that looks upon things with serenity.
The mind is strong (sound) when it imagines nothing of this world at the time of prayer.
A mind that, with God's help, has accomplished the practical life and drawn near to knowledge perceives little or nothing at all of the irrational part of the soul, knowledge snatching it up on high and separating it from the things of sense.
The soul has dispassion not when it does not suffer toward things, but when it remains untroubled even toward the memories of them.
The perfect man does not practise continence, and the dispassionate man does not endure (with patience), since endurance belongs to one who suffers, and continence to one who is troubled.
It is a great thing to pray undistractedly, but a greater thing still to sing psalms undistractedly.
He who has established the virtues within himself and has become wholly blended with them no longer remembers law or commandments or punishment, but says and does whatever the best disposition (habitus) dictates.
Practical contemplations, seventy-one. Demonic songs stir up our desire and cast the soul into shameful fantasies;
實踐的默想,共七十一則。屬魔的歌曲挑動我們的慾望,把靈魂投入羞恥的幻象;
1-1:238
but psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs ever summon the mind to the remembrance of virtue, cooling our seething irascible part and withering our desires.
If those who wrestle are in the act of pressing and being pressed in return, and the demons wrestle with us, then they too, in pressing us, are pressed in return by us.
"For I will press them hard," it says, "and they shall not be able to stand."
"Those who pressed me and my enemies, they themselves grew weak and fell."
Rest is yoked together with wisdom, but toil with prudence;
安息與智慧相連,勞苦則與明達(審慎、phronesis)相連;
1-1:243
for it is not possible to acquire wisdom without warfare, and it is not possible to succeed in the warfare without prudence;
因為不經爭戰便不能得著智慧,沒有明達也不能在爭戰中得勝;
1-1:244
for this [prudence] is entrusted with resisting the fury of the demons, compelling the powers of the soul to operate according to nature, and preparing in advance the way of wisdom.
Temptation for the monk is a thought that rises up through the passible part of the soul and darkens the mind.
Sin for the monk is the consent of the thought to the forbidden pleasure.
The angels rejoice when vice is diminished, but the demons when virtue is diminished;
罪惡減少時,眾天使便歡喜;德行減少時,眾魔便歡喜;
1-1:248
for the former are ministers of mercy and love, the latter subjects of anger and hatred;
因為前者是憐憫與愛的僕役,後者是忿怒與憎恨的爪牙;
1-1:249
and the former, drawing near, fill us with spiritual contemplation, while the latter, approaching, cast the soul into shameful fantasies.
The virtues do not cut off the assaults of the demons, but they preserve us blameless.
The practical life is a spiritual method that purifies the passible part of the soul.
The activities of the commandments do not suffice to heal perfectly the powers of the soul, unless suitable contemplations also succeed to occupy the mind.
It is not possible to resist all the thoughts cast in upon us by the angels, but it is possible to overturn all the thoughts cast in by the demons;
天使所植入我們的種種思念,我們無法盡都抗拒;但魔鬼所植入的種種思念,我們卻能盡都推翻;
1-1:254
and the former thoughts are followed by a peaceful condition, the latter by a disturbed one.
And dispassion is the flower of the practical life;
無情慾乃是實踐生活的花朵;
1-1:256
and the practical life is constituted by the keeping of the commandments;
實踐的生活由遵守誡命而構成;
1-1:257
and the guardian of these is the fear of God, which is the offspring of right faith;
守護這些誡命的,是敬畏神,而敬畏神乃是正信的後裔;
1-1:258
and faith is an inward good, which is wont to exist even in those who have not yet believed in God.
Just as the soul, working through the body, perceives the ailing members,
so too the mind, when it exercises its own activity, comes to recognize its own powers, and through what hinders it, discovers the commandment that heals it.
The mind that wages the warfare of the passions will not behold the principles (logoi) of the warfare;
那進行情慾之爭戰的心智,無法看清爭戰的道理(logoi);
1-1:262
for it is like one who fights in the night;
因為它就像在黑夜中爭鬥的人;
1-1:263
but having acquired dispassion, it will easily come to know the wiles of the enemies.
The end (goal) of the practical life is love;
實踐生活的終點(目標)乃是愛;
1-1:265
and the beginnings of both [practical life and love] are faith and natural contemplation;
而這二者〔實踐生活與愛〕的開端,乃是信心與本性的靜觀(自然默觀);
1-1:266
and all those demons that fasten upon the passible part of the soul are said to oppose the practical life;
凡是攀附於靈魂受苦部分的眾魔,都被說成是敵擋實踐生活的;
1-1:267
but all those, in turn, that trouble the rational part are named enemies of all truth and adversaries of contemplation.
Nothing of the things that cleanse bodies remains afterward with those that have been cleansed;
凡潔淨身體之物,在潔淨之後便不再與那已被潔淨者同存;
1-1:269
but the virtues both cleanse the soul and, when it has been cleansed, remain together with it.
The rational soul operates according to nature when its concupiscible part longs for virtue, its irascible part struggles on behalf of it, and its rational part applies itself to the contemplation of created things.
He who advances in the practical life diminishes the passions, and he who advances in contemplation diminishes ignorance;
在實踐生活上長進的人,減少情慾;在靜觀上長進的人,減少無知;
1-1:272
and of the passions there will at some time be even a complete destruction, but of ignorance they say that of the one kind there is an end, and of the other there is not.
Things good and evil according to their use become productive of the virtues and of the vices;
凡按其用途而言為善或為惡之物,便能生出諸德或諸惡;
1-1:274
and it belongs to prudence, then, to use these things toward the one or the other.
Since, according to our wise teacher, the rational soul is tripartite, when virtue comes to be in the rational part, it is called prudence, understanding, and wisdom;
按我們智慧的老師所說,理性靈魂分為三部分;當德行存於理性部分時,便稱為明達、悟性與智慧;
1-1:276
and when in the concupiscible part, chastity, love, and continence;
當存於慾望部分時,便稱為貞潔、愛與節制;
1-1:277
and when in the irascible part, courage and endurance;
當存於怒氣部分時,便稱為勇敢與忍耐;
1-1:278
and in the whole soul, righteousness.
And the work of prudence is to take command against the opposing powers, to shield the virtues, to draw up battle line against the vices, and to administer things indifferent according to the occasions;
明達的工作,是統率全軍對抗敵對的勢力,護衛諸德,列陣抵擋諸惡,並按各樣時機處置那些中性之事;
1-1:280
the work of understanding is to manage suitably all that contributes to our aim;
悟性的工作,是妥善地安排一切有助於我們目標之事;
1-1:281
the work of wisdom is to contemplate the principles (logoi) of bodily and incorporeal beings;
智慧的工作,是靜觀有形與無形眾有的道理(logoi);
1-1:282
the work of chastity is to look dispassionately upon the things that stir up in us irrational fantasies;
貞潔的工作,是以無情慾的態度看待那些在我們裡面挑起非理性幻象之事物;
1-1:283
the work of love is to present itself to every image of God almost as it is toward the Prototype itself, even when the demons attempt to defile them;
愛的工作,是向每一個神的形像(即每一個人)所表現的,幾乎如同它向那原型(神自己)所表現的一樣,縱然眾魔企圖玷污這些形像;
1-1:284
to shake off with joy every pleasure of the throat (palate);
以喜樂之心抖落咽喉(口腹)的一切快樂;
1-1:285
and not to fear the enemies, but readily to persevere in hardships, belongs to endurance and courage;
不懼怕仇敵,反倒甘心在艱難中堅忍,這是屬於忍耐與勇敢的;
1-1:286
the work of righteousness is to bring about a certain concord and harmony among the parts of the soul.
The fruit of seeds is the sheaves, and of the virtues, knowledge;
種子的果實是禾捆,諸德的果實則是知識;
1-1:288
and as tears follow upon the sowing, so joy follows upon the sheaves.
Sayings of the holy monks. It is necessary also rightly to inquire into the ways of the monks who have gone before, and to be set right with reference to them;
聖潔修士們的嘉言。我們也必須正確地查考那些走在前頭之修士的道路,並以他們為準繩來修正自己;
1-1:290
for one may find many things well said and well done by them;
因為人可從他們身上尋見許多說得好、行得好的事;
1-1:291
among which one of them also says this: that a drier and not irregular regimen, joined with love, more quickly brings the monk into the harbour of dispassion.
The same man freed from apparitions a certain one of the brothers who was troubled at night, by commanding him to minister to the sick while fasting;
這同一位長老,曾使一位夜間受幻象攪擾的弟兄得釋放,方法是吩咐他一面禁食、一面服事病人;
1-1:293
for, when asked, he said that by nothing are such passions so quenched as by mercy.
To the righteous Antony there came one of the wise men of that time, and he said, "How do you hold out, father, deprived of the consolation that comes from books?" And he replied:
"My book, O philosopher, is the nature of created things, and it is present whenever I wish to read the words (logoi) of God."
The vessel of election, the Egyptian elder Macarius, once asked me:
"Why is it that, when we bear a grudge against men, we obliterate the soul's power of memory, but when we bear a grudge against demons, we remain unharmed?" And when I was at a loss for an answer and begged to learn the reason, he said: "Because the former is contrary to the nature of the irascible part, but the latter is according to its nature."
I came to the holy father Macarius at the very height of a steady noonday, and, being exceedingly inflamed with thirst, I asked for water to drink;
我曾在正午烈日當頭之際來到聖父馬卡里烏斯那裡,因渴得火燒一般,便求水喝;
1-1:299
for many now, whether travelling by land or sailing, are deprived even of this.
Then, as I was rehearsing words to him about continence... [the text breaks off here]
Take courage, my child, he said: in twenty whole years I have never had my fill of bread, of water, or of sleep;
他說:孩子,放心吧;整整二十年來,我從未飽足過餅、水或睡眠;
1-1:302
for I ate my bread by weight, drank my water by measure, and, leaning myself against the walls, I would snatch only a small portion of sleep.
The death of his father was announced to one of the monks;
有人向一位修士報告他父親的死訊;
1-1:304
but he said to the one who brought the news, Stop blaspheming;
他卻對那報信的人說:不要褻瀆;
1-1:305
for my father is immortal.
One of the brethren asked one of the elders whether he would permit him, when visiting the house, to eat together with his mother and his sisters;
一位弟兄問一位長老,他回家探望時,是否准許他與母親和姊妹同桌吃飯;
1-1:307
but he said, You shall not eat with a woman.
One of the brethren possessed only a Gospel book, and having sold even this he gave the proceeds for food to the hungry, uttering a saying worthy of remembrance;
一位弟兄只擁有一本福音書,他連這本也賣了,把所得用來給飢餓的人作食物,並說了一句值得記念的話;
1-1:309
for he said, I have sold the very word that says to me,
Sell what you have and give to the poor.
There is an island near Alexandria, lying toward the northern part of the lake called Maria, and there dwells a monk of the camp of the gnostics, a most approved man;
在亞歷山大附近,有一座島,位於那名叫馬利亞之湖的北邊,有一位屬於『有知識者』營中、極受敬重的修士住在那裡;
1-1:312
who declared that everything done by the monks is done for five reasons:
for God, for nature, for custom, for necessity, and for the work of the hands.
The same man said again that virtue is by nature one, but takes on distinct forms in the powers of the soul;
這同一個人又說,德行按本性是一個,但它在魂的各種能力中取了不同的形態;
1-1:315
for it is formless, he said, yet it is its nature to be shaped according to the windows through which it enters.
And yet another of the monks said:
I do away with pleasures, he said, in order to cut off the occasions of anger;
他說:我除掉諸般快樂,為要斷絕忿怒的藉口;
1-1:318
for I know that it is always fighting on behalf of the pleasures, troubling my mind and driving away knowledge.
One of the elders used to say that love does not know how to keep deposits of food or money.
I do not know, he said, having been deceived by the demons twice in the same matter.
It is not possible to love all the brethren equally, but it is possible to associate with all dispassionately, being free from grudge-bearing and hatred;
要平等地愛眾弟兄是不可能的,但要無情慾地與眾人相處卻是可能的,只要脫離記恨與恨惡;
1-1:322
we must love the priests, after the Lord, who cleanse us through the holy mysteries and pray on our behalf;
在主之後,我們當愛眾祭司,他們藉著神聖的奧祕潔淨我們,並為我們禱告;
1-1:323
and we must honor our elders as the angels;
我們又當尊敬我們的眾長老,如同尊敬眾天使;
1-1:324
for it is they who anoint us for the contests and heal the bites of the wild beasts.
But for now let this much be said by me to you concerning the practical life, most beloved brother Anatolios, as much as, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, we have found by gleaning while our grape-cluster was just ripening in its seed;
至親愛的弟兄亞拿多流,關於實行生活,現今讓我對你說這些就夠了,就是當我們的葡萄在子粒中剛轉色之時,藉著聖靈的恩典,我們拾穗所尋得的;
1-1:326
but if the Sun of righteousness shines steadily upon us and the cluster becomes fully ripe, then we shall also drink of its wine that gladdens the heart of man, through the prayers and intercessions of the righteous Gregory who planted me, and of the holy Fathers now living who water me, and by the power of Christ Jesus our Lord who gives me increase, to whom be glory and might unto the ages of the ages.
