1-1:1
On the Theophany, that is, the Nativity of the Saviour.
Christ is born; give glory!
Christ comes from heaven; go forth to meet Him!
Sing to the Lord, all the earth!
And, to embrace both in one word: Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, for the sake of Him who is heavenly and then became earthly.
Christ is in the flesh: rejoice with trembling and with joy—trembling because of sin, and joy because of hope.
Women, keep your virginity, that you may become mothers of Christ.
Who does not worship Him who is from the beginning? Who does not glorify Him who is the last?
Again the darkness is dispersed, again the light arises, again Egypt is punished with darkness, again Israel is illumined by the pillar.
Let the people who sat in the darkness of ignorance behold the great light of knowledge.
Behold, all things have become new.
The letter gives way, the spirit prevails, the shadows pass away, the truth enters in.
He who was without a mother becomes without a father; without a mother in the first begetting, without a father in the second.
Without a mother formerly, without a father afterward.
1-1:15
The world above must be filled.
All you nations, clap your hands, for unto us a child is born, a son also is given unto us, whose government is upon His shoulder (for He is lifted up together with the cross), and His name is called Angel of Great Counsel—that is, of the Father's counsel.
Prepare the way of the Lord.
And I too will proclaim the power of this day.
He who is without flesh takes flesh, the Word is made thick, the Invisible is seen, the Intangible is touched, the Timeless makes a beginning, the Son of God becomes the Son of man—Jesus Christ, the same yesterday and today and unto the ages.
Let the Jews take offence, let the Greeks deride, let the heretics wag their tongues.
They will believe then, when they see Him ascending into heaven;
他們要等到看見祂升入天上時,才會相信;
1-1:22
and if not even then, yet when they see Him coming from the heavens and seated as Judge.
But now is the Theophany, the festival, that is, the Nativity;
如今乃是神顯的節期,也就是聖誕;
1-1:24
for it is called by both names, two appellations being given to one reality.
For God appeared to men through a birth;
因為神藉著降生向人顯現了;
1-1:26
on the one hand existing, and ever existing from the One who ever exists, beyond cause and reason (for there was no reason higher than the Word);
一方面,祂是自有永有的,從那永有者而出,超乎一切緣由與理由(因為再沒有比道更高的理由);
1-1:27
on the other hand, becoming for our sake at a later time, that He who gave being might also bestow well-being;
另一方面,祂後來為我們的緣故降生,好叫那賜下「存在」的,也將「美好的存在」恩賜我們;
1-1:28
or rather, that He might lead us back, who had fallen away from well-being through wickedness, to that same well-being again through the Incarnation.
Its name, with respect to His appearing, is Theophany;
就祂顯現而言,這節期名為「神顯」;
1-1:30
with respect to His being born, the Nativity.
This is our festival, this is what we celebrate today—the sojourn of God among men, that we may dwell with God, or rather return to Him (for so it is more fitting to say), that, putting off the old man, we may put on the new;
這就是我們的節期,這就是我們今日所慶祝的——神在人間的居住,好叫我們能歸到神那裡,或更貼切地說,是回到祂那裡,使我們脫去舊人,穿上新人;
1-1:32
and as in Adam we died, so in Christ we may live—being born with Christ, crucified with Him, buried with Him, and rising with Him.
And as from better things came sorrows, so from sorrows let better things come back.
For where sin abounded, grace did much more abound;
因為罪在哪裡顯多,恩典就更加顯多了;
1-1:35
and if the tasting condemned, how much more did the suffering of Christ justify! Therefore let us keep the feast, not in festal pomp, but divinely;
若那一嘗使人定罪,基督的受苦豈不更使人稱義嗎?所以我們守節,不可流於世俗的鋪張,而要按神聖的方式;
1-1:36
not in a worldly way, but in a manner above the world;
不照屬世的樣式,而是照超越世界的方式;
1-1:37
not the things of our weakness, but the things of our healing;
不照那關乎我們軟弱的事,而照那關乎醫治的事;
1-1:38
not the things of our first formation, but of our refashioning.
And how shall this be? Let us not garland our porches, nor form dancing-choirs, nor adorn the streets, nor feast the eye, nor lull the ear with flutes, nor enervate the sense of smell, nor prostitute the taste, nor gratify the touch—those ready highroads to vice and gateways of sin; let us not be softened by garments delicate, flowing, and whose chief beauty is uselessness, nor by the sparkle of gems, nor the gleam of gold, nor the artifices of colours that falsify natural beauty and are devised against the image of God;
這要如何成就呢?我們不可用花環裝飾門廊,不可組成歌舞之群,不可妝點街道,不可飽飫眼目,不可用笛聲麻醉耳朵,不可使嗅覺沉溺,不可使味覺放縱,不可順從觸覺——這些都是通向罪惡的捷徑、進入罪中的門戶;我們不可被那柔軟、飄逸、其至美在於無用的衣裳所軟化,也不可被寶石的閃光、黃金的炫耀、以及那些假冒天然之美、悖逆神形像而設計的色彩巧飾所迷惑;
1-1:40
nor by revels and drunkenness, with which I know lewdness and licentiousness to be coupled;
也不可沉於宴樂與醉酒,因我深知淫亂與放蕩總是與這些相連;
1-1:41
since from evil teachers come evil lessons—or rather, from evil seeds come evil harvests.
Let us not pile up lofty couches, building tabernacles to the belly for the things of luxury.
Let us not prize fragrant wines, the contrivances of cooks, the costliness of perfumes.
Let not land and sea bring us as gifts their prized refuse;
不要讓陸地與海洋把牠們那貴重的穢物當作禮物奉獻給我們;
1-1:45
for thus do I know how to value luxury.
Let us not strive to outdo one another in intemperance.
For to me intemperance is everything superfluous and beyond need;
因在我看來,凡是過剩的、超乎需用的,都是放縱;
1-1:48
and this while others hunger and are in want—men of the same clay and the same mixture.
But let us leave these things to the Greeks, to Greek pomps and festivals;
我們倒要把這些留給希臘人、留給希臘式的浮華與慶典;
1-1:50
they who name as gods beings that delight in the savour of sacrifice, and consistently serve the divine by the belly, being themselves wicked priests of wicked demons, both fashioners and initiators and initiates.
But we, to whom the Word is the object of worship—if we must indulge in any luxury, let us luxuriate in the Word, in the divine law, and in narratives, both others and those from which the present festival springs;
至於我們,所敬拜的乃是道;我們若一定要享樂,就讓我們在道中、在神的律法中、在各樣敘事中享樂,尤其是那構成今日節期的敘事;
1-1:52
that the luxury may be fitting, and not far from Him who has called us.
Or will you—for today I am your host—will you have me set before you, my noble guests, the discourse concerning these things, as richly and generously as I can, that you may see how the stranger can feed the natives, the rustic the townsfolk, the man of no luxury those who live in luxury, and the poor and homeless those resplendent in wealth? I will begin from this point;
或者你們願意——因今日我是你們的主人——願我盡我所能、豐豐富富、慷慨大方地,把論這些事的話語擺在你們這些尊貴的賓客面前,叫你們看見:客旅怎能供養本地人,鄉野之人怎能餵養城裡人,不享奢華者怎能款待享樂之人,貧寒無家者怎能宴請那富麗顯赫之人?我就從這裡起頭;
1-1:54
and cleanse for me your mind, your hearing, and your understanding—all you who feast on such things;
凡你們以這等事為享受的人,都要為我潔淨你們的心思、聽覺與悟性;
1-1:55
since the discourse is about God, and is itself divine;
因為這話語是論到神的,本身也是神聖的;
1-1:56
that you may depart having truly feasted on the things that are not emptied.
And this discourse shall be at once most full and most concise;
這話語要既最豐滿、又最簡明;
1-1:58
so as neither to grieve by deficiency, nor to weary by satiety.
God always was, and is, and shall be;
神向來就有,現今仍有,將來永有;
1-1:60
for 'was' and 'shall be' are fragments of our time and of fleeting nature;
因為「曾有」與「將有」乃是我們這屬世時間與流變之性的片段;
1-1:61
but He who Is, ever is; and this He calls Himself when He spoke as an oracle to Moses on the mountain.
For comprehending all being in Himself, He possesses existence neither begun nor ending, like some boundless and limitless ocean of being, transcending all conception of time and nature;
因祂將一切存有都包羅在自己裡面,祂的存在既無始、亦無終,宛如一片無邊無際的存有之海,超越一切關於時間與本性的觀念;
1-1:63
outlined by the mind alone, and that very dimly and scantily—not from what He is in Himself, but from what surrounds Him—as one image of the truth is gathered from another, fleeing before it is grasped, and escaping before it is conceived;
唯獨能憑心思勉強描畫,且極其朦朧、有限——不是從祂的本體,而是從祂的周圍——由種種印象彙集成真理的某一影像,這影像在被掌握之前就遁去,在被領會之前就逃脫了;
1-1:64
illuminating our ruling faculty—and that only when purified—as much as the swiftness of a flash of lightning, which does not stay, illuminates the eye.
As it seems to me, He does this so that by what is comprehensible He may draw us to Himself (for what is utterly incomprehensible is also beyond hope and beyond pursuit), while by what is incomprehensible He may be wondered at; and being wondered at, may be the more desired; and being desired, may purify; and purifying, may make us godlike; and to such, as His own, He may at last hold converse—the word ventures something bold—God being united to gods and made known by them, perhaps as fully as He already knows those who are known by Him.
The divine, then, is boundless and hard to contemplate;
如此說來,那神聖者是無限的,是難以默想的;
1-1:67
and this alone of Him is wholly comprehensible—His incomprehensibility;
關乎祂,唯有這一件是完全可被理解的——就是祂的不可理解;
1-1:68
for of a nature it is necessary either to be wholly incomprehensible, or to be perfectly comprehended.
For why should we go on inquiring about Him who is of a simple nature?
της·
For simplicity is not in itself His nature;
因為單純本身並不就是祂的本性;
1-1:71
if indeed for composite beings their mere existence is not their being composite.
And when we look toward the lower order and what follows, He is immortal and indestructible;
當我們轉向下面的事物與其後的次序時,祂是不死的、不朽壞的;
1-1:73
and when He comprehends the whole, He is eternal.
For eternity is neither time, nor any part of time;
因為永世既非時間,也非時間的任何部分;
1-1:75
but what time is to us, measured by the sun's course, that eternity is to the everlasting—a co-extension with the things that are, like a kind of temporal movement and interval.
Let this much, then, be my philosophizing about God for the present.
For there is no occasion to go beyond this, since our present subject is not theology, but the divine dispensation.
And when I say 'God,' I mean Father, Son, and Holy Spirit;
我說「神」的時候,乃是指父、子、聖靈;
1-1:79
the Godhead being neither diffused beyond these, lest we introduce a multitude of gods;
這神性既不漫溢於此三者之外,免得我們引進眾多的神;
1-1:80
nor confined within fewer than these, lest we be condemned for a poverty of Godhead—either Judaizing through a single rule, or Hellenizing through excess.
For the evil is alike in both, even though it be found in opposite extremes.
Thus, then, is the Holy of Holies, which is veiled even from the seraphim, and is glorified with three sanctifyings that meet in one Lordship and Godhead;
這就是那至聖所,連撒拉弗也以翅遮蔽它,又以三次的「聖哉」歸榮給它,這三聖匯合於獨一的主權與神性;
1-1:83
as has been most beautifully and loftily philosophized by another of those before us.
But since this—merely to be moved in contemplation of itself—did not suffice for the Goodness, but the good had to be poured forth and to journey outward, so that more beings might be benefited (for this belonged to the highest goodness), He first conceives the angelic and heavenly powers;
但因為這——單單在自我默觀中運行——並不足以滿足那「至善」,因善必須傾流而出、向外行進,好叫受恩者得以增多(這正屬於至高的良善),於是祂首先構想出眾天使的、屬天的能力;
1-1:85
and the conception was a work, accomplished by the Word and perfected by the Spirit.
And thus there came into being second splendours, ministers of the first Splendour;
就這樣,第二等的光輝得以存有,作那首先光輝的僕役;
1-1:87
whether we are to suppose them intellectual spirits, or fire immaterial and bodiless, or some other nature as near as possible to those just named.
I would indeed like to say that they are unmoved toward evil, and possess only the movement toward the good, being about God and illumined first from God;
我固然想說,牠們是不會傾向惡的,只有趨向善的動向,因牠們環繞著神,又最先從神得了光照;
1-1:89
for the things here below receive a second illumination. But I am persuaded to suppose and to call them not unmovable, but hard to move, on account of him who, because of his splendour, was called Lucifer, yet became darkness through his pride, both in fact and in name—and the apostate powers under him, who are creators of evil by their flight from the good, and procurers of it for us as well.
Thus, then, and for these reasons, the intelligible world came into being for Him—at least as I, weighing great matters with a feeble word, philosophize concerning these things.
And since the first creation was good in His sight, He conceives a second world, material and visible;
既然頭一個受造界在祂眼中是美好的,祂便構想出第二個世界,是物質的、可見的;
1-1:92
and this is the system and compound of heaven and earth and what lies between—praiseworthy for the natural excellence of each part, but yet more praiseworthy for the harmony and concord of the whole, each thing being well-disposed toward another, and all toward all, for the completion of one world;
這就是天、地、及其間萬物所成的體系與構造——其每一部分的天然美妙固然可讚,而那由萬物匯成的協調與諧和則更為可讚,各物彼此相宜,又眾物與萬有相宜,共成這一個世界;
1-1:93
that He might show Himself able to bring into being not only a nature akin to Himself, but also one altogether foreign to Him.
For akin to the Godhead are the intellectual natures, comprehensible by the mind alone;
因為那些悟性的性質,唯獨能憑心思理解的,乃是與神性同類的;
1-1:95
but altogether foreign are all that fall under sense-perception, and, further still than these, all that are utterly without soul and without movement.
But what is this to us?—perhaps one of those overly festive and over-fervent souls might say. Spur the colt round the turning-post.
Philosophize for us concerning the feast, and the things over which we preside today.
This indeed I will do, even if I began a little far back, thus constrained by both my longing and my discourse.
Mind, then, and sense, thus distinguished from one another, stood within their proper bounds, and bore in themselves the majesty of the Creator-Word—silent praisers of His mighty work, and resounding heralds.
But there was not yet a blending of the two, nor any mixture of opposites—a token of greater wisdom and of lavishness concerning natures;
但那時還沒有二者的調和,也沒有對立之物的任何混合——這混合乃是更大智慧的標記,也是祂在創造諸性上慷慨豐厚的標記;
1-1:101
nor was the whole wealth of the Goodness yet made known.
Willing therefore to display this, the Artificer-Word also creates man—one living being out of both, I mean out of invisible and visible nature;
因此那位巧匠之道,願意彰顯這事,便也創造了人——一個由二者(我是說由不可見的與可見的性質)所成的活物;
1-1:103
and taking the body from the matter already pre-existing, but putting in from Himself a breath (which the Scripture knows as a rational soul and image of God), He sets him upon the earth as a kind of second world, great in his littleness—another angel, a composite worshipper, a beholder of the visible creation, an initiate into the intelligible, king over the things on earth yet ruled from above, earthly and heavenly, transient and immortal, visible and intelligible, midway between greatness and lowliness;
祂從那已先存的物質取了身體,又從自己吹入一股氣息(這氣息聖經知道乃是悟性的魂與神的形像),便將他立在地上,作為一個小宇宙、一個小中見大者——另一位天使,一個混合的敬拜者,可見受造界的觀看者,可悟知之界的入門者,地上萬物的君王卻受治於上天,既屬地又屬天,既短暫又不朽,既可見又可悟,居於偉大與卑微之間;
1-1:104
the same being both spirit and flesh;
同一個人,既是靈又是肉;
1-1:105
spirit because of grace, flesh because of pride;
因恩典而為靈,因驕傲而為肉;
1-1:106
the one that he may abide and glorify the Benefactor;
前者是要他存留下去,並榮耀那施恩者;
1-1:107
the other that he may suffer, and by suffering be reminded and disciplined, even while priding himself in his greatness;
後者是要他受苦,並藉著受苦得以被提醒、被管教,即或他正以自己的尊大而自誇;
1-1:108
a living being here dispensed, and removed elsewhere, and—as the end of the mystery—deified by his inclining toward God.
For to this, as it seems to me, the moderate light of truth here leads: to see and to experience the splendour of God, in a way worthy of Him who both bound us together and shall loose us, and shall again bind us together in a loftier fashion.
Him He placed in Paradise—whatever that Paradise then was—honouring him with free will, that the good might belong to the one who chose it no less than to Him who provided the seeds, a tiller of immortal plants, that is, perhaps, of divine conceptions, both the simpler and the more perfect; naked in his simplicity and his unartificial life, and without any covering or screen.
For such it was fitting that the first man should be.
And He gives a law, as matter for the exercise of free will.
And the law was a commandment: of which plants he might partake, and which he must not touch.
And this was the tree of knowledge—neither planted in the beginning with evil intent, nor forbidden out of envy (let not the fighters against God send their tongues thither, nor imitate the serpent);
這就是那知識樹——它既非起初懷著惡意而栽種,也非出於嫉妒而被禁止(願那些與神爭戰的人,不要把他們的舌頭指向那裡,也不要效法那蛇);
1-1:115
but good if partaken of in due season (for the tree was contemplation, as it seems to me, upon which it is safe for only those of more perfect habit to enter), yet not good for those still simpler and more greedy in appetite—just as solid food is not profitable for those still tender and needing milk.
But when, through the envy of the devil and the woman's wile—she who suffered as the weaker, and brought it on him as the more persuasive (alas for my weakness!
for that of my forefather is my own)—he forgot the commandment given to him, and was overcome by the bitter tasting;
因為我先祖的軟弱也就是我的軟弱)——他便忘了所賜給他的誡命,敗在那苦澀的一嘗之下;
1-1:118
and at once, because of his wickedness, he becomes an exile from the tree of life, and from Paradise, and from God, and is clothed with the garments of skin—perhaps the grosser flesh, both mortal and resistant;
他立刻就因自己的惡,被逐出了生命樹、樂園、以及神之外,並被披上皮子作的衣服——這或許是指那較粗糙、既必死又有阻抗的肉身;
1-1:119
and this is the first thing he comes to know—his own shame—and he hides himself from God.
1-1:120
Yet even here he gains something;
然而即或在此,他也得了些益處;
1-1:121
namely, death, and the cutting-off of sin, that evil might not be immortal;
就是死亡,並罪的被截斷,使惡不至於成為不朽的;
1-1:122
and so the punishment becomes a loving-kindness.
For this is how I am persuaded that God punishes.
And after being disciplined beforehand by many things, in return for the many sins of which the root of wickedness had sprouted forth through diverse causes and at diverse times—by reason, by law, by prophets, by benefits, by threats, by plagues, by floods, by conflagrations, by wars, by victories, by defeats, by signs from heaven, by signs from the air, from earth, from sea, by unhoped-for reversals of men, of cities, of nations—the aim of all which was to wear away wickedness;
在這之前,他已受了多方的管教,為要對付那因種種緣由、在種種時候從惡根所萌生的眾多罪愆——藉著理性、藉著律法、藉著眾先知、藉著恩惠、藉著恐嚇、藉著災殃、藉著洪水、藉著大火、藉著爭戰、勝利、敗績、從天上來的兆頭、從空中、從地、從海來的兆頭、藉著人、城邑、列國出人意料的變遷——這一切的目的,都是要消磨那惡;
1-1:125
since these things needed a greater remedy, a greater one they obtain.
And this was the very Word of God Himself—the One before the ages, the invisible, the incomprehensible, the bodiless, the Beginning from the Beginning, the Light from the Light, the fountain of life and immortality, the impress of the archetypal beauty, the unmoving seal, the unvarying image, the Father's definition and word;
這救治就是神的道自己——那位在萬世之前者、那不可見的、不可測度的、無形體的、從元始而出的元始、從光而出的光、生命與不朽的泉源、原型之美的印模、那不動移的印記、那毫無差異的形像、父的界定與言說;
1-1:127
He comes to His own image, and bears flesh for the flesh's sake, and is mingled with a rational soul for my soul's sake, cleansing like by like.
And He becomes man in all things, save sin;
祂在凡事上成了人,只是沒有罪;
1-1:129
conceived indeed of the Virgin, who was purified beforehand both in soul and flesh by the Spirit (for both birth had to be honoured, and virginity to be honoured yet more);
祂從那童女懷胎而生,這童女的魂與肉身已先藉著聖靈被潔淨(因為生育固當被尊榮,而童貞則當被更加尊榮);
1-1:130
and He came forth as God with that which He had assumed—one out of two opposites, flesh and spirit;
祂帶著所取的人性顯出來,作為神——由兩個對立者(肉身與靈)所成的一位;
1-1:131
of which the one deified, and the other was deified.
He who Is comes into being, and the Uncreated is created, and the Uncontainable is contained—through the medium of a rational soul, mediating between Godhead and the grossness of flesh.
1-1:133
And He who enriches becomes poor;
那使人富足的,自己卻成了貧窮;
1-1:134
for He becomes poor in my flesh, that I might be enriched in His Godhead.
For He empties Himself of His own glory for a little while, that I might partake of His fullness.
What is the wealth of His goodness? What is this mystery concerning me? I partook of the image, and I did not keep it;
祂良善的豐富是何等的?這關乎我的奧祕又是甚麼?我曾分有那形像,卻沒有守住它;
1-1:137
He partakes of my flesh, both to save the image and to make the flesh immortal.
Inasmuch as then He imparted of the better, but now partakes of the worse.
This is more godlike than the former;
這比那前者更帶著神的樣式;
1-1:140
this is loftier to those who have understanding.
And having found it, He took it up upon His shoulders, on which He also bore the cross;
祂既尋見了那迷羊,就把牠扛在肩上,這肩頭也正是祂背負十字架的肩頭;
1-1:142
and having taken it up, He led it back to the life above;
祂既扛起了牠,就把牠領回那在上的生命;
1-1:143
unless someone should also blame the physician because he stoops over sufferings, and endures foul odours, that he may give health to the sick;
除非有人連那醫生也要責怪,因他俯身於病患之上,忍受污穢的臭氣,為要將健康賜給患病的人;
1-1:144
and the one who leans over a pit out of compassion, that he may rescue the fallen beast, according to the law.
1-1:145
He was sent indeed—but as man;
祂確是被差遣的——但乃是作為人;
1-1:146
for He also grew weary, and hungered, and thirsted, and was in agony, and wept, by the law of the body;
因祂也照著身體的常律,曾困乏、飢餓、口渴、極其傷痛、又曾哭泣;
1-1:147
but if also as God, what of it? Reckon the good pleasure of the Father to be His sending, to whom He refers His own works, both as honouring an eternal Beginning, and that He might not seem to be opposed to God.
Since He is also said to have been delivered up, but it is likewise written that He delivered up Himself;
因為經上既說祂被交付了,卻也照樣記著說,祂是把自己交付了;
1-1:149
and to have been raised up by the Father, but also that He raised up Himself, and ascended again.
Those belong to the good pleasure, these to the authority.
1-1:151
But you mention the things that lower Him, while you pass over those that exalt Him;
你卻只提那些使祂降卑的事,而略過那些使祂被高舉的事;
1-1:152
and you take into account that He suffered;
你既算計祂受了苦;
1-1:153
but that He suffered willingly, you do not add.
1-1:154
What things the Word suffers even now!
By some, as God, He is honoured and joined together;
有人視祂為神,便尊榮祂,將其位格合而為一;
1-1:156
by others, as flesh, He is dishonoured and divided.
With whom shall He be the more angry? Or rather, to whom shall He show forbearance? To those who wrongly conflate, or to those who divide? For the one group ought to have divided, and the other to have joined together;
祂該向哪一等人更為動怒呢?或更該寬容哪一等呢?是那錯誤合併的人,還是那割裂分開的人呢?因為前者本該分別,後者本該聯合;
1-1:158
the one according to number, the other according to Godhead.
Do you stumble at the flesh? So also did the Jews.
Or do you even call Him a Samaritan? The rest I will pass over in silence.
Do you disbelieve His Godhead? This not even the demons did.
O you who are more faithless than the demons, and more senseless than the Jews!
Those reckoned the title 'Son' to be a voice of equality;
那些猶太人尚且把「子」這稱號當作同等的明證;
1-1:164
these knew the God who drove them out.
1-1:165
For they were convinced by what they suffered.
But you neither accept the equality, nor do you confess the Godhead.
It were better for you to be circumcised and demon-possessed, if I may say something even ludicrously, than in uncircumcision and health to be disposed wickedly and godlessly.
A little later, then, you shall see Jesus being cleansed in the Jordan—my cleansing;
稍後,你便要看見耶穌在約但河受潔淨——這乃是我的潔淨;
1-1:169
or rather, sanctifying the waters by His cleansing (for He surely did not Himself need cleansing, He who takes away the sin of the world); and the heavens being rent asunder, and Him being borne witness to by the kindred Spirit, and being tempted, and conquering, and ministered to by angels, and healing every disease and every infirmity, and giving life to the dead (would that you too were given life, you who are dead in your false doctrine!), and driving out demons—some by Himself, some through the disciples—and feeding tens of thousands with a few loaves, and walking upon the sea, and being betrayed, and crucified, and crucifying my sin together with Himself;
或更該說,是藉著祂的受洗潔淨了眾水(因為祂——那除去世人罪孽的——當然並不需要潔淨);又見諸天裂開,祂被那同質的聖靈作見證,受試探而得勝,有天使來服事祂,祂醫治各樣的病症、各樣的軟弱,叫死人復活(但願你這在謬道中死了的人,也得活過來!),又趕逐眾鬼——有的親自趕,有的藉著門徒趕——用幾個餅餵飽千萬人,行走在海面上,被人出賣,被釘十字架,並將我的罪與祂自己一同釘在十字架上;
1-1:170
as a lamb being led, and as a priest offering, as a man being buried, and as God rising again, then also ascending, and coming again with His own glory.
How many festivals there are for me in each of the mysteries of Christ!
Of all which the sum is one: my own perfecting and refashioning, and my return to the first Adam.
But now receive the conception, and leap for joy;
如今你要接受那受孕成胎的事,並要歡躍跳動;
1-1:174
and reverence the enrolment, through which you were enrolled in the heavens;
要敬重那戶口登記,因你藉此被登記在諸天之上;
1-1:175
and venerate the birth, through which you were loosed from the bonds of your birth;
要尊崇那降生,因你藉此從你自己出生的捆鎖中得了釋放;
1-1:176
καὶ τὴν Βηθ.
and honour little Bethlehem, which led you back to Paradise;
要尊榮那微小的伯利恆,因它把你領回了樂園;
1-1:177
and worship the manger, through which you, being without reason, were fed by the Word.
Know, like the ox, your owner—Isaiah charges you—and, like the ass, the manger of your lord;
你要像牛一樣認識主人——以賽亞這樣囑咐你——又要像驢一樣認識主人的槽;
1-1:179
whether you are one of the clean, and under the law, and chewing the cud of the word, and fit for sacrifice;
無論你是那潔淨之物中的一個,伏在律法之下,反芻著道的話語,配得獻為祭牲的;
1-1:180
or one of the as yet unclean, and uneatable, and unfit for offering, and of the Gentile portion.
Run with the star, and bring gifts with the Magi—gold, and frankincense, and myrrh—as to a King, and as to God, and as to one dead for your sake.
With the shepherds give glory, with the angels sing praise, with the archangels join the dance.
Let there be a common festival of the heavenly and earthly powers.
For I am persuaded that they too rejoice and keep festival together today;
因我深信,牠們今日也一同歡欣、一同守節;
1-1:185
Hate one of the things connected with the birth of Christ—the slaughter of children by Herod;
在那與基督降生相連的事上,有一件你當恨惡——就是希律屠殺嬰孩之事;
1-1:186
or rather, reverence even this—the sacrifice of those of the same age as Christ, slain beforehand for the new Victim.
If He flees into Egypt, eagerly share His exile.
It is good to flee together with the persecuted Christ.
If He tarries in Egypt, call Him out of Egypt, where He is rightly worshipped.
Be purified, be circumcised, take away the veil that has been upon you from birth.
After this, teach in the temple, drive out those who make merchandise of God;
在這之後,要在殿裡施教,趕出那些把神當作買賣的人;
1-1:192
be stoned, if you must suffer this;
你若必須受這事,就被人用石頭打罷;
1-1:193
you will escape those who cast the stones, I know well, and will flee through the midst of them, as God; for the Word is not stoned.
If you are brought before Herod, do not answer the more part.
He will reverence even your silence more than the long speeches of others.
If you are scourged, seek also the remaining sufferings.
Taste gall, for the sake of the tasting;
你要嘗那苦膽,為要補贖那一嘗(伊甸的誤嘗);
1-1:198
be given vinegar to drink, seek out the spittings, receive the blows, the buffetings;
要被人拿醋給你喝,要尋求那些唾沫,要承受那些掌摑與拳打;
1-1:199
be crowned with thorns, by the roughness of the life lived according to God;
要戴上荊棘的冠冕,就是憑那按神而活之生命的艱辛;
1-1:200
put on the scarlet robe, receive the reed, be worshipped by those who mock the truth;
要披上那朱紅色的袍子,要接過那根葦子,任憑那些戲弄真理的人向你假意下拜;
1-1:201
and at last be crucified with Him, put to death with Him, buried with Him eagerly, that you may also rise with Him, and be glorified with Him, and reign with Him—beholding God so far as it is possible, and being beheld—Him who is worshipped and glorified in the Trinity, whom we pray may even now be made clear to us, so far as is attainable to those bound in the flesh, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory unto the ages.
