Lemmas come mainly from word-level tagging of other books in the same language (not from this verse), falling back to dictionary form-matching for the rest. Rare homographs can still be misread; verify against the original and a specialist lexicon where precision matters.

1:1574
just as also the vow is a promise, that is, a pledge, of the things which men, sincerely serving God, offer up — presenting Scripture as bearing witness to their own statement in many places, as [in], 'Vow, and render to the Lord our God';
正如誓願則是承諾,亦即人真誠事奉天主時所獻上的約定——他們以聖經多處所作的見證,佐證自己所論,如經上所言:『你們許願,就當向上主我們的天主償還』;
1:1575
and, 'Whatever I vowed, I will render to you, my Savior and Lord';
又如:『凡我所許的願,我要向你、我的救主上主償還』;
1:1576
and again concerning prayer, as [in], 'And Anna prayed to the Lord, saying,'
'Lord Adonai, Eloi Sabaoth, if you will indeed hear and hearken to your handmaid, and give me fruit of the womb;'
and, 'Hezekiah king of Judah, and Isaiah son of Amoz the prophet, prayed to the Lord;'
and, 'Whenever you pray, say, Our Father, who art in the heavens,' spoken by the Lord to the disciples;
又如主對門徒所說:『你們禱告的時候,要說:我們在天上的父』;
1:1580
so that it is possible that the vow be the keeping of the commandments, ratified according to the resolve of the one who has vowed;
因此,誓願或可理解為守誡命,依許願者的意志抉擇而得以確立;
1:1581
and that prayer be the petition, by the one who has kept [the commandments], for a share in the good things that were held in store [as promised];
而祈禱則是那持守誡命者,為分享所存留(應許)之美善所作的祈求;
1:1582
or rather, the vow [is] the contest of virtue, which God receives most gladly when it is offered;
或者更準確地說,誓願乃是德行的競賽,是天主最為欣然接納的獻禮;
1:1583
and prayer, the prize of virtue;
而祈禱,則是德行的獎賞;
1:1584
which God, rejoicing greatly, gives in return
Therefore, since it has been shown that prayer is the petition for the good things [given] by the Word incarnate, let us, having set the Word himself before us as the teacher of prayer, approach with confidence, carefully working out, as far as contemplation allows, the meaning of each phrase;
既然已經表明,祈禱乃是求取那位成了肉身的聖言所賜下的美善之事,那麼,讓我們以聖言自身為祈禱的導師,懷著信心進而探究,藉默觀盡力細心闡明每一句話的意涵;
1:1586
as the Word himself is wont to supply [it] beneficially, and grants [us] to grasp the power of the meaning intended by the one who utters it
'Our Father, who art in the heavens:'
Straightway, in these words, the Lord fittingly teaches those who pray to begin with theology, and he initiates [them] into the manner of existence of the creative cause of beings, since he is, according to essence, the cause of the things that are
For the words of the prayer contain a declaration of the Father, and of the name of the Father, and of the kingdom of the Father;
因為這篇祈禱的言辭,含有對父、父之名、以及父之國度的宣告;
1:1590
so that from this very beginning we may be taught to venerate, invoke, and worship the one Trinity
For the name of God and Father, subsisting essentially, is the only-begotten Son;
因為天主和父的名,本質性地存在的,即是那獨生子;
1:1592
[and it is] holy, [as Scripture] says: 'Let your Holy Spirit come, and cleanse us'
For the Father does not have the name as something acquired, nor indeed do we conceive the kingdom as a dignity superadded to him
For he did not begin to be, so as then also to begin to be Father or King;
因為祂並非先開始存在,然後才開始成為父或王;
1:1595
but, ever being, he is ever also Father and King;
而是祂常在,也就常是父、常是王;
1:1596
having begun neither to be, nor at all to be Father or King
But if, ever being, he is ever also Father and King, then ever also the Son and the Holy Spirit essentially coexist with the Father, being from him and naturally in him, beyond cause and reckoning, but not coming to be after him on account of some later cause
For relation possesses the force of mutual indication, not allowing the terms of which it is, and is called, a relation, to be considered [as existing] after one another
Beginning, then, from this [very opening] of the prayer, we are led [urged] to honor
the consubstantial and super-essential Trinity, as the creative cause of our own generation
Moreover, we are also taught to proclaim the grace of adoption bestowed upon us, being counted worthy to call, by grace, him who is by nature [our] Creator, 'Father';
此外,我們也蒙教導去宣揚賜予我們的義子恩寵,得以蒙恩配稱那按本性為造物主者為『父』;
1:1602
so that, revering the title of the One who by grace has begotten us, we may be zealous, in our life, to imprint the characteristics of the one who begot us, hallowing his name upon earth, both taking after our Father and being shown through our deeds to be [his] children, and magnifying, through whatever we think or do, the natural Son of the Father who is himself the author of this adoption
And we hallow the name of the Father who is by grace in the heavens, namely by mortifying material desire, and being cleansed of corrupting passions;
我們使那按恩寵而在天上的父之名成聖,也就是藉治死屬物的欲望,並潔除敗壞人的情慾;
1:1604
if indeed sanctification is the complete immobility and mortification of desire according to sense-perception;
若聖化確實在於使感官層面的欲望完全靜止、且被治死;
1:1605
in which state, having come to be, we quiet the unseemly barkings of anger, since it no longer has desire to arouse it and persuade it to contend fiercely on behalf of its own pleasures, [desire] having already been put to death by holiness according to reason
For anger, being by nature the champion of desire, is naturally disposed to cease its raging when it sees that [desire] has been put to death
Fittingly, then, with the casting away of anger and desire, the dominion of the kingdom of God and Father comes, according to the prayer, upon those who, after the setting aside of these, are counted worthy to say, 'Thy kingdom come;'
既拋棄忿怒與欲望,理所當然地,按此祈禱,天主和父之國度的權能便臨及那些在棄絕此二者後、得蒙配稱說出『願你的國降臨』的人;
1:1608
that is, the Holy Spirit;
亦即聖神;
1:1609
already having become, by the word and manner of meekness, a temple made for God through the Spirit
'For upon whom,' he says, 'shall I rest, but upon the one who is meek and humble, and who trembles at my words?'
so that from this it is clear that the kingdom of God and the Father belongs to the humble and the meek.
For, it says, ‘Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.’
This earth, which by nature has received a position in the middle of the universe, God did not promise as an inheritance to those who love him;
這片按本性居於宇宙中央之位的大地,神並沒有把它應許為那些愛祂之人的產業;
1:1614
if indeed he speaks truly when he says, ‘For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage;’
假如祂所說「因為人從死裡復活的時候,也不娶也不嫁」的話為真;
1:1615
but are like angels in the heavens.
And elsewhere again, to another who served with goodwill: ‘Enter into the joy of your Lord.’
And after him the divine Apostle: ‘For the trumpet will sound, and the dead in Christ will rise first, incorruptible.’
Then we who are alive, who are left, will together with them be caught up in clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
…a settled state — one moved by reason, and desiring to be a servant of reason, might at some point call this the very same thing as ‘earth.’
But now I think ‘earth’ is spoken of as the fixed and utterly unchangeable habit and power of the immutability of the meek in what is good, as one that always exists with the Lord, and has unfailing joy, and has laid hold of the kingdom prepared from of old, and has been deemed worthy of the standing and rank in heaven;
但我認為,此處所謂的「大地」,是指那穩固、且完全不會偏離美善之溫柔者不變性的一種習性與能力——這能力常與主同在,擁有不止息的喜樂,已把握住從起初就預備好的國度,並配得在天上的地位與品秩;
1:1621
as though this reason of virtue had received, as it were, a certain ‘earth,’ a position in the middle of all things;
彷彿德行的道理,正如某種「大地」,領受了居於萬有中央的位置;
1:1622
according to which the meek person, being in the middle between praise and blame, remains without passion, neither being puffed up by praise [being elated or vainglorious], nor being made gloomy by blame [being grieved].
For the one whose reason is by nature free, having removed desire from these things, does not perceive them when they trouble him with their assaults, having made himself cease from the storm concerning them, and having transferred the whole power of his soul toward the divine and inactive freedom;
因為凡理性按本性自由的人,既已使欲望脫離這些事物,當這些事物以侵擾來滋擾時,便不再感受到它們,因為他已使自己止息了圍繞這些事的風暴,並將靈魂的全部能力轉向那神聖且無所作為的自由;
1:1624
of which the Lord, desiring to impart to his own disciples, says, ‘Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am meek and humble in heart;’
and you will find rest for your souls;
calling ‘rest’ the might of the divine kingdom, as producing in the worthy a lordship freed from all servitude.
But if to the humble and meek is given the indestructible power of the incorruptible kingdom, who is so unloving and altogether without appetite for the divine goods as not to desire in the highest degree humility and meekness, so that he might become, insofar as it is attainable for a man, the very character of the divine kingdom, bearing in himself, by grace, the unaltered formation in the Spirit of him who is truly, by nature and in essence, the great King, Christ?
in which, says the divine Apostle, there is neither male nor female;
神聖的使徒說,在其中「並不分男女」;
1:1629
that is, anger and desire;
也就是說,並無忿怒之情與貪慾之情;
1:1630
the one [anger], tyrannically carrying reasoning along with it, and putting the mind outside the law of nature;
其中一者(忿怒)以暴虐之勢驅使思慮,使心智脫離本性的法則;
1:1631
the other [desire], making the things that come after the one and only desirable and impassible Cause and Nature more lovable [than that Cause itself], and on this account setting the flesh in higher esteem than the spirit;
另一者(欲望)則使那唯一、可欲且無情之因與本性之後的諸事物顯得更可愛,因而把肉體看得比靈更為尊貴;
1:1632
and making the enjoyment of things visible appear more delightful than the glory and splendor of things intelligible;
並使可見事物的享樂,顯得比可理解之事物的榮耀與光輝更為愉悅;
1:1633
by the smoothness of sensory pleasure, barring the mind from the divine and kindred apprehension of intelligible things;
藉著感官快感之光滑,攔阻心智去領受那神聖且與可理解之事同源的把握;
1:1634
but only reason alone, stripped through abundance of virtue even of the utmost of that affection and disposition for the body which — though impassible — is nevertheless natural to it, the spirit completely conquering nature and persuading reason to leave off from moral philosophy, whenever the mind must be united with the supra-essential Word through simple and undivided contemplation;
唯獨理性本身,因德行之豐盛,甚至剝去了那對肉身雖屬無情、卻仍是天然的眷戀與傾向之極致;此時靈完全勝過了本性,並說服〔理性〕暫息倫理哲學之功夫,每當心智必須藉單純而無分別的默觀,與那超越本質的道相契合之時;
1:1635
even if it is naturally disposed to contribute to it, toward an easy severance and crossing-over of things that flow in time;
縱使它〔那自然的傾向〕天生有助於它,使人得以輕易割斷、跨越那隨時間流逝之事物;
1:1636
once these things have been crossed over, it is not reasonable that one who has been declared unrestrained by things sensible should still be burdened, as though by a sheepskin, with the manner that accords with mere character/habit.
And the great Elijah shows this clearly, through what he did, typologically demonstrating this mystery;
偉大的以利亞藉著他所行之事,清楚地顯明了這一點,以預表的方式表明了這奧秘;
1:1638
for the sheepskin — I mean the mortification of the flesh, in which the magnificence of moral order is fixed — he gave, at his being taken up, to Elisha, as an ally of the spirit against every opposing power, and as a blow to unstable and flowing nature;
那羊皮——我意指肉體的治死,其中固結著道德端莊之莊嚴——他在被提之時,把它交給了以利沙,作為靈對抗一切敵對勢力的助力,也作為對不穩定、流變之本性的一擊;
1:1639
of which nature the Jordan was a type, so that the disciple, surrounded by the murky and slippery [current] of attachment to material things, might not be held back from the crossing to the holy land;
約旦河正是這本性的預表,為使那門徒不致因被物質眷戀之混濁、滑溜〔水流〕所包圍,而被攔阻無法渡往聖地;
1:1640
but he himself, going forth toward God unhindered, held back by no relation whatsoever to any existing thing, simple in desire and uncompounded in gnomic will, made his journey toward him who is simple by nature, through the interlinked generic virtues, joined to one another in a manner known to him, as though by fiery horses.
For he knew that it is necessary for the disciple of Christ to be rid of unequal dispositions, whose very difference exposes the estrangement [from God];
因為他知道,基督的門徒必須擺脫種種不均等的傾向,這些傾向之間的差異正暴露出與神的疏離;
1:1642
for it is clearly the boiling of the blood, when the irascible faculty is stirred, that produces this;
而血液的沸騰,顯然是忿怒之能被激動時所造成的;
1:1643
and having attained — as one living and moving and being in Christ — he put away from himself the strange [and strange] generation of unequal things;
他既已達到——彷彿一個在基督裡活著、動作、存在的人——便從自身除去了那些不均等之事的怪異〔且怪異的〕生成;
1:1644
not bearing in himself, as it were male and female, the opposite dispositions, as I said, of these passions;
他不再如男女之別般,在自身中懷有這些情感——如我所言——相反的傾向;
1:1645
lest reason be enslaved to these, being altered by their unstable changes — reason in which the reverence of the divine image has naturally been blended, persuading the soul to be reshaped according to gnomic will toward the divine likeness, and to become [a member] of the great kingdom that co-subsists essentially with God and Father of all, as an all-radiant dwelling of the Holy Spirit, receiving wholly, if it is lawful to say so, according to what is possible, the authority to know the divine nature;
免得理性受這些情感奴役,因其不穩定之變化而被改變──在這理性之中,天然已摻入了對神聖形像的敬畏,勸服靈魂按其意志抉擇被重塑,趨向與神相似,並成為那與萬有之神與父在本質上共存之偉大國度的一份子,作為聖靈那滿溢光輝的居所,若可如此說的話,盡其所能地,完全領受認識神聖本性的權柄;
1:1646
according to which authority a coming-into-being naturally occurs whereby [the soul] ceases from worse things and comes to subsist in better things, the soul, by the grace of its calling, guarding within itself, as though equal to God, the inviolable subsistence of the good things bestowed [on it];
依此權柄,自然而然地產生一種生成:從較低劣者除去,而在較優越者中得以確立──靈魂憑著蒙召的恩典,如同與神等同一般,將所受贈之美善的那不可侵犯的實有,護存於自身之內;
1:1647
according to which [disposition] Christ, ever willing, is mystically born, being made flesh through those who are being saved;
依此,基督常懷意願,在奧秘中誕生,藉著那些得救者而成為肉身;
1:1648
and making the soul that gives birth [to him] a mother of virgins — a soul which, to put it briefly, does not have, in respect of relation, as it were male and female, the marks of the nature subject to corruption and generation.
Let no one be surprised at hearing ‘corruption’ placed before ‘generation.’
For examining, without passion and together with right reason, the nature of things that come to be and cease to be, one will clearly find that generation begins from corruption and ends in corruption;
因為若以無情之心,配合正確的道理,仔細審察生成與消逝之事物的本性,便會清楚發現:生成始於朽壞,也終於朽壞;
1:1651
the meaningful/signifying passions of which, as I said, Christ does not have;
而此〔生成〕之標誌性情感,如我所言,基督並不具有;
1:1652
that is, the life and reason of Christ, and of him who lives according to Christ;
也就是說,基督的生命與道理,以及照著基督而活之人的生命與道理;
1:1653
if indeed the one who says this speaks truly: ‘For in Christ Jesus there is neither male nor female;’
若那說話者所言為真:「因為在基督耶穌裡,並不分男女」;
1:1654
that is, indicating the signs and the passions of the nature subject to corruption and generation;
也就是指明那受制於朽壞與生成之本性的種種記號與情感;
1:1655
but only a god-formed reason, qualified by divine knowledge, and a single movement of gnomic will, choosing virtue alone.
‘Neither Greek nor Jew,’ by which is signified the differing account concerning the opinion of God;
「並不分希臘人和猶太人」——藉此標示出關於神的種種不同見解/道理;
1:1657
or, to speak more truly, opposing [accounts].
[The Greek account,] foolishly introducing polyarchy, and dividing the one principle among opposing energies and powers;
〔希臘人的道理〕愚昧地引入多元統治,將唯一的本原,分割成互相對立的諸運作與能力;
1:1659
and fashioning a polytheistic worship, torn by faction through the multitude of those worshiped, and made ridiculous by the differing manner of worship.
[The Jewish account,] on the one hand, posits one [principle], but narrow and incomplete and almost without subsistence, as being bereft of Word and life, falling through the opposite means into an evil equal to the former account, namely atheism;
〔猶太人的道理〕雖立唯一〔本原〕,卻是狹隘、不完整,幾近無實有,因其缺乏「道」與「生命」,藉著相反的途徑,陷入與前者同等的惡——即無神論;
1:1661
circumscribing the one principle within a single person, and holding this [principle] to subsist apart from Word and Spirit;
將唯一的本原限定於單一的位,且使這本原脫離「道」與「靈」而獨立存在;
1:1662
or [holding it to have been] made/qualified by Word and Spirit.
not perceiving that whoever is deprived of these is no God;
or how could he be God, if he possesses these as accidents by participation, in a manner similar to rational beings subject to generation?
of which errors, in Christ, there is altogether none, as I said;
而在基督裡,如我所言,這些〔錯謬〕全然沒有一項;
1:1666
but only the account of true piety, and the firm ordinance of mystical theology, which rejects the diffusion of the deity found in the first account, and does not accept the contraction found in the second;
而只有真敬虔的道理,以及奧秘神學那穩固的法度,既摒棄了前者對神性的擴散,也不接受後者對神性的收縮;
1:1667
so that it might not be factious through natural multiplicity —
for that would be Greek — nor passible through singularity according to hypostasis;
因為那將是希臘式的——也不致因依位格而言之單一性而陷於受動;
1:1669
for that would be Jewish — [the deity conceived] as deprived of Word and Spirit, or as made/constituted by Word and Spirit;
因為那將是猶太式的——〔即把神性視為〕缺乏「道」與「靈」者,或被「道」與「靈」所造成者;
1:1670
but the divine is proclaimed to be Mind and Word and Spirit, not as not being these;
而神性乃被宣告為即是心智、道、與靈,並非「非是」〔這些〕;
1:1671
and teaching us, who by the calling of grace have, through faith, been brought into the full knowledge of truth, to know one nature and power of the deity;
並教導我們——我們這些藉恩典之呼召、憑信仰被引入真理之全知者——認識神性只有一個本性與能力;
1:1672
that is, one God contemplated in Father and Son and Holy Spirit;
也就是,一位神,在父、子、聖靈中被觀想;
1:1673
as being the only uncaused Mind, essentially subsisting; the begetter of the only Word without beginning who subsists essentially; and the source of the only eternal life essentially subsisting, as of the Holy Spirit;
這位神乃是唯一無因之心智,本質地實存,是唯一按本質實存、無始之道的生成者,也是唯一永恆生命──本質地實存者──的泉源,即聖靈之源;
1:1674
a Trinity in unity, and a unity in Trinity;
一體中之三一,三一中之一體;
1:1675
for the Trinity is not an accident in the unity as in its essence;
因為三一並非作為偶性存在於「一」這本質之中;
1:1676
or conversely, a unity in Trinity —
for the unity does not differ from the Trinity by otherness of nature, being a simple and single nature.
Nor is it as one alongside another; for the Trinity is not distinguished from the unity, nor the unity from the Trinity, by any diminution of power;
也不是彼此相對而立的另一物;因為「三一」並非以能力之減弱而有別於「一」,「一」也並非以能力之減弱而有別於「三一」;
1:1679
nor is the unity distinguished from the Trinity as a common and generic [term], contemplated only in conception in relation to the particulars falling under it; rather, the unity is, in the proper sense, a substantially subsistent essence, and a power truly self-sufficient in strength.
for that which is altogether identical and unrelated is not mediated by relation, as the caused is [mediated] toward its cause.
For the Trinity does not arise by derivation from a unity, since it is unoriginate and self-manifest;
因為三一並非藉由某種衍生過程從「一」而來,乃是無生、自顯的;
1:1682
but the very same reality is truly both spoken of and conceived as unity and as Trinity;
而是同一實在,真實地既被稱為「一」,也被稱為「三一」,既被如此言說,也被如此思念;
1:1683
the one, by reason of essence;
「一」是就本質之理而言;
1:1684
the other, by the mode of subsistence;
「三一」則是就存在之式而言;
1:1685
the same being wholly one unity, not divided among the hypostases;
同一實在完整地是「一」,不因位格而被分割;
1:1686
and the same being wholly a Trinity, not confounded with the unity;
同一實在也完整地是「三一」,不與「一」相混淆;
1:1687
so that neither polytheism be introduced through division, nor atheism through confusion;
免得因分割而引入多神論,或因混淆而引入無神論;
1:1688
avoiding which errors, the doctrine that is according to Christ shines forth.
By the doctrine of Christ I mean the new proclamation of the truth, in which there is neither male nor female;
我所說基督的道理,是指真理的新宣告,其中並無男女之分;
1:1690
by which I mean the marks and the passions belonging to a nature subject to corruption and generation.
Nor Greek and Jew, the opposing doctrines concerning the Godhead;
也無希臘人與猶太人之分,那關乎神性彼此對立的兩種主張;
1:1692
nor circumcision and uncircumcision, the modes of worship corresponding respectively to these;
也無受割禮與未受割禮之分,即分別與此二者相應的敬拜方式;
1:1693
the one, because of the symbols of the Law, disparaging the visible creation and slandering the Creator as the maker of evils;
其一,因律法之表記,貶抑可見的受造界,並誣謗造物主為惡之製造者;
1:1694
the other, because of its passions, deifying that same creation and raising up the creature in rebellion against the Creator;
其二,則因情慾而將此受造界神化,使受造物起來悖逆造物主;
1:1695
and both alike, meeting together in equal evil, compound outrage against the Godhead —
that is, the seditious estrangement of the one nature from itself, both in nature and in disposition;
亦即那同一本性因意向而與自身相悖、彼此分裂的悖亂狀態;
1:1697
according to which the unnatural law of mutual slaughter crept in corruptingly among men.
Nor slave and free;
也無奴僕與自由人之分;
1:1699
namely, clearly, the division of that same nature which has arisen contrary to right disposition;
亦即,明顯地,同一本性因悖離心志而生的分裂;
1:1700
rendering dishonorable one who is by nature equal in honor;
使那本性上原本同尊同榮者,變為卑賤無尊;
1:1701
having as its auxiliary law the disposition of those who lord it over others, a disposition that tyrannizes the dignity proper to the image of God.
But Christ is all things and in all, fashioning in the Spirit, through what is above nature and law, the formation of the kingdom that has no beginning;
然而基督是萬有,且在萬有之中,藉那超乎本性與律法之事,在聖靈裡塑造那無始之國度的形象;
1:1703
which, as has been demonstrated, is by nature characterized by humility of heart and meekness;
此國度,如前所證,天然地以心之謙卑與溫柔為其特徵;
1:1704
and the union of these two shows the man who is being created according to Christ to be perfect.
For everyone who is humble-minded is altogether also meek, and everyone who is meek is altogether also humble-minded;
因為凡心存謙卑者,必然也是溫柔的;凡溫柔者,也必然是謙卑的;
1:1706
humble-minded, inasmuch as he knows that his very being is borrowed;
所謂謙卑,乃因深知自己的存在乃是借來的;
1:1707
meek, inasmuch as he has rightly discerned the use of the powers naturally given to him;
所謂溫柔,乃因已辨明那按本性所賦予他之能力當如何運用;
1:1708
giving over the service of these powers to reason for the begetting of virtue;
把這些能力的效用交給理性,用以生成德行;
1:1709
while completely restraining their operation with respect to sense-perception.
And for this reason, with respect to the intellect he is ever in motion toward God;
因此,就理智而言,他常向神運動不息;
1:1711
but with respect to sense-perception, even were he to experience all the pains pertaining to the body together, he is not moved at all, nor does he imprint upon the soul any trace of grief that would alter the joy-producing disposition within it;
但就感官而言,縱使同時承受一切屬乎身體的痛苦,他仍絲毫不為所動,也不會在靈魂上留下絲毫憂傷的痕跡,以致改變其中那產生喜樂的傾向;
1:1712
for he does not regard what is painful to the senses as a deprivation of pleasure.
For he knows only one pleasure, the soul's communion with the Word, the deprivation of which is unending punishment, encompassing by its very nature all the ages.
And for this reason, leaving behind the body and all that belongs to the body, he is carried with intense longing toward communion with the divine;
因此,他撇下肉身及一切屬乎肉身之事,急切奔向與神聖的共融;
1:1715
counting as the only loss — even though he might rule over everything on earth — the failure to attain the deification hoped for by grace.
Let us therefore purify ourselves from every defilement of flesh and spirit, that we may hallow the divine name, quenching desire that unseemly dallies coquettishly with the passions;
所以,讓我們潔淨自己,除去肉體與靈魂一切的污穢,好使我們尊聖神的名,撲滅那不當地與情慾嬌媚調情的慾望;
1:1717
and by reason let us bind fast the passion of anger, which rages disorderly and madly after pleasures;
並藉理性約束那因追逐快樂而狂亂失序、暴怒不已的怒氣;
1:1718
And let us apply the next clause of the prayer to what has preceded, saying:
"Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth."
Whoever mystically offers worship to God by the rational power alone, separated from desire and from anger, has fulfilled the divine will on earth, just as the ranks of the angels do in heaven;
凡僅以理性之能力、脫離慾望與怒氣、奧祕地向神獻上敬拜者,此人便在地上如同天上眾天使班次一般,成全了神的旨意;
1:1721
becoming in every way a fellow-worshipper with the angels and sharing their manner of life, just as the great Apostle somewhere says: "Our citizenship is in the heavens";
在凡事上都與眾天使同為敬拜者、同其生活方式,正如大使徒某處所言:「我們卻是天上的國民」;
1:1722
among whom there is no desire that, through pleasure, relaxes the sinews of the intellect;
在他們(天使)中間,並無那藉快樂鬆弛心智之力的慾望;
1:1723
nor is there raging anger, barking indecently at its own kin;
也無狂怒發作,對同類無禮吠叫;
1:1724
but reason alone, which naturally leads rational beings toward the first Logos;
唯獨理性,本性地引導理性存有者歸向那第一道(邏各斯);
1:1725
in which alone God delights, and which he requires from us who are his servants.
"For what have I in heaven, and what have I desired of thee upon earth?"
Now nothing is offered to God in the heavens by the holy angels except rational worship;
然而,在諸天之上,眾聖天使向神所獻的,除了理性的敬拜之外別無他物;
1:1728
and seeking this same worship from us also, he taught us, when praying, to say:
"Thy will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth."
Let our reason, then, likewise be moved toward the seeking of God, and let the power of desire be moved toward longing for him, and let the power of anger strive toward guarding him;
所以,讓我們的理性也向著尋求神而運動,讓慾望之能力向著渴慕祂而運動,讓怒氣之能力為護衛祂而奮鬥;
1:1731
or rather, to speak more properly, let the whole intellect be stretched taut toward God;
或者,更確切地說,讓整個理智都伸展向神;
1:1732
as though braced with sinew by a certain tension in the manner of the spirited faculty, and set ablaze with longing through the utmost reach of desire's striving.
For thus, imitating the angels in heaven, we shall be found worshipping God through all things;
如此效法天上眾天使,我們必被見為在凡事上敬拜神;
1:1734
displaying on earth the same manner of life as the angels;
在地上展現出與眾天使相同的生活方式(國度);
1:1735
having, like them, our intellect moved not at all toward anything that comes after God.
"I am the bread that came down from heaven and gives life to the world";
「我是從天上降下來、賜生命給世界的糧」;
1:1737
becoming all things, proportionately, to us who are nourished through virtue and wisdom;
祂按比例向我們這些藉德行與智慧而得餵養的人成為萬有;
1:1738
and being embodied variously in each one who is being saved, in the manner he himself knows;
並藉每一個得救者,以祂自己所知的各種方式,取得身體般的形式;
1:1739
while we still exist in this present age, in accordance with the force of the prayer's saying: "Give us this day our daily bread."
For I think that this present age is what is signified by "today";
因為我認為「今日」正是指這個世代;
1:1741
as though someone, taking the sense more clearly, might render this passage of the prayer thus: "Our bread, which from the beginning thou didst prepare for the immortality of our nature, give us today, while we are still within the present life of mortality";
彷彿有人取其更明白之意,將禱文此句意譯為:「我們的糧,就是祢自起初為使我們本性得不朽而預備的糧,求祢在我們仍處於這必死之今生時,賜給我們」;
1:1742
so that the nourishment of the bread of life and of knowledge may overcome the death that comes from sin;
好叫那生命與真知之糧的滋養,勝過罪所帶來的死亡;
1:1743
of which bread the transgression of the divine commandment did not permit the first man to become a partaker.
For had he partaken fully of this divine nourishment, he would not have been overtaken by the death that comes from sin.
Yet he who prays to receive this daily bread does not by any means receive it wholly, as the bread itself truly is;
然而,祈求領受此日用之糧者,並非全然按此糧本身之實質而完全領受;
1:1746
but only in the measure that the one who receives it is able to receive.
For the bread of life, being a lover of mankind, gives himself to all who ask, though not to all in the same measure;
因為生命之糧,出於祂愛人的本性,向一切祈求者賜下自己,然而並非向眾人以相同的程度賜下;
1:1748
but rather more abundantly to those who have accomplished great works;
而是向那成就大工者更豐厚地賜下;
1:1749
and less abundantly to those who fall short of these;
向那不及於此者則較少賜下;
1:1750
to each, that is, according to the measure of worth in mind that he is able to receive.
The Savior led me to this understanding of the present saying, expressly commanding the disciples to take no thought whatsoever for sensible food, saying: 'Do not be anxious for your soul, what you shall eat or what you shall drink;'
nor for your body, what you shall put on;
也不要為你們的身體憂慮穿什麼;
1:1753
for all these things the nations of the world seek after;
因為這一切都是世上的外邦人所尋求的;
1:1754
but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.
How then does He teach us to pray for the things concerning which He had earlier commanded us not to seek?
For it is clear that He did not command us to ask in prayer for what He had not exhorted us by commandment to seek.
Therefore, whatever we have not been permitted to seek by commandment, it is perhaps not lawful to ask for in prayer.
But if the Savior commanded us to seek only the kingdom of God and His righteousness;
但既然救主只吩咐尋求神的國和祂的義;
1:1759
He fittingly led those who desire the divine gifts to ask for this also in prayer;
祂便理所當然地引導那些渴慕神聖恩賜的人,也藉祈禱求取這國度;
1:1760
so that, having confirmed by prayer the grace of the things naturally sought, He might join the gnomic will of those who ask to the will of Him who bestows the grace, making it one and the same through a relational union.
But if we are also commanded to ask in prayer for the daily bread by which our present life is naturally sustained, let us not transgress the bounds of prayer, greedily looking around for many cycles of years, and let us not forget, being mortal, that we hold a life passing away like a shadow;
至於我們今生藉以維持存續的『日用的糧』,既然我們奉命要藉祈禱求取,就不要越過祈禱的界限,貪婪地環顧多年的循環,以致忘記自己是必死之人,忘記我們所擁有的生命正如影子般消逝而過;
1:1762
but let us ask in prayer, without excessive care, for the bread sufficient for the day;
而要不憂不慮地藉祈禱只求一日所需的糧食;
1:1763
and let us show that we make our life, in a philosophic manner after Christ, a meditation upon death, anticipating nature by the gnomic will, and, before death arrives, cutting off the soul from care for bodily things;
並且顯明我們是按基督的樣式,以哲學的方式將此生當作對死亡的默想,以意志抉擇搶先於本性之前,在死亡尚未來臨之前,就已將靈魂從對肉身的憂慮中割離;
1:1764
lest it be nailed fast to the things that perish, having exchanged for matter the exercise of its natural desire, and lest it learn that greed deprives one of the abundance of the divine goods.
Let us then flee, as far as we are able, the love of matter, and let us wash away our attachment to it, like dust, from the eyes of the mind;
因此,讓我們竭盡所能逃避對物質的貪愛,並將對它的執著如塵埃一般,從心智之眼洗淨;
1:1766
and let us be content with only what sustains, and also with what gives delight to, our present life;
並且讓我們只以那些維持今生所需之物為滿足,也以那些為今生帶來喜悅之物為滿足;
1:1767
and let us petition God for them, as we have been taught, so that we may be able to keep the soul unenslaved, in no way wholly held fast, through the body, by any of the visible things;
並且照我們所受的教導,為這些事祈求神,使我們能夠保守靈魂不被奴役,完全不因肉身而被任何可見之物所束縛;
1:1768
and let us be shown to eat for the sake of living, and not be convicted of living for the sake of eating.
For the former is clearly proper to a rational nature, the latter to an irrational one.
And let us be exact guardians of prayer, showing by the very facts themselves that we cling fast to one and only one thing, the life in the Spirit, and that toward the acquisition of that same [present

life, that is,] we make use of it;
生,顯然〕才加以使用;
1:1772
for the sake of which we cherish its use only to this extent: that we do not refuse to sustain it with bread alone, and that, so far as it depends on us, we preserve its natural well-being incorrupt;
為此,我們珍視其(今生)用途,僅止於不拒絕單以糧食維持它,並且盡我們所能保守其天生的健康不受損壞;
1:1773
not that we may live, but that we may live for God;
不是為了要活,而是為了要為神而活;
1:1774
making the body, reasoned by the virtues, a messenger of the soul, and making the soul, formed by steadfastness in the good, a herald of God;
使身體因諸德而合乎理性,成為靈魂的使者;並使靈魂因對美善的堅定而被塑造,成為神的傳令者;
1:1775
and naturally confining this bread within a single day;
並且順著本性,將這糧限定於單獨一天之內;
1:1776
not daring, for its sake, to extend our petition to the Giver, through prayer, into a second day.
For thus, having truly disposed ourselves according to the power of prayer, we would be able to approach purely also the remaining words, saying:
'And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors.'
He who, according to the first application of the contemplation of the preceding saying, seeks by prayer, in this present age — of which we said 'today' is the symbol — the incorruptible bread of wisdom, from which transgression walled us off at the beginning, since indeed he knows that the one pleasure is the attainment of divine things, of which God is by nature the giver;
按照前一句經文默觀的第一層應用,那藉祈禱在此世(我們曾說『今日』即是此世的象徵)尋求智慧之不朽之糧的人——這糧是我們起初因悖逆而被隔絕的——因為他深知唯一的喜樂乃是獲得神聖之事物,而神本性上正是這喜樂的賜予者;
1:1780
and the guardian, according to willing, is the choice of the one who has received it;
而按意願而言,這(喜樂)的守護者,則是領受者的抉擇;
1:1781
and knowing the one pain to be the failure to attain these things, of which the devil is the instigator;
並且深知唯一的痛苦,乃是未能獲得這些事物,而這痛苦的煽動者是魔鬼;
1:1782
but the one who actually brings this about is everyone who, through weakness of the gnomic will, grows weary of divine things [
not guarding the precious good that is cherished by the dispositions of the gnomic will;
不能持守那藉意志抉擇之傾向而被珍愛的寶貴〔美善〕;
1:1784
having his choice inclined altogether toward none of the visible things, and for this reason not being subjected to the bodily griefs that befall him;
他的抉擇完全不傾向任何可見之物,因此也不受制於臨到他身上的肉身痛苦;
1:1785
this one truly, dispassionately, forgives those who sin against him;
這人才是真正地、無情慾地赦免那些得罪他的人;
1:1786
since no one can at all subdue the good that is pursued by him according to desire, which is believed to be by nature unconquerable.
And he establishes himself as a model of virtue for God, if it is lawful to say this, as though urging the inimitable One to come to the imitation of himself, saying:
'Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors;'
and calling upon God to become, toward him, such as he himself has become toward his neighbors.
For if, just as he himself has forgiven the debts of those who sinned against him, he also wishes to be forgiven by God, it is clear that, just as God dispassionately forgives whomever He forgives, so also he himself, remaining dispassionate amid what befalls him, forgives those who have offended;
因為若他既如自己饒恕了那得罪他之人的債,也願望自己得蒙神的赦免,那麼顯然,正如神無情慾地赦免祂所赦免的人,他自己也當在所遭遇的事上持守無情慾,赦免那些冒犯他的人;
1:1791
[not letting the] memory of any past grievances be imprinted upon the mind, lest, by cleaving nature apart through his gnomic will, he be convicted — being human himself — of standing estranged from some fellow human being.
For thus, when the gnomic will has been united to the reason of nature, God's reconciliation with nature naturally comes about, since it is not otherwise possible for nature — divided against itself according to the gnomic will — to receive the divine and ineffable condescension.
And perhaps for this reason God wills us first to make reconciliation with one another — not that He might learn from us how to be reconciled to sinners and to forgive the payment of many fearful offenses, but that He might cleanse us of passions, and might show that the disposition of those who are forgiven corresponds to the bond of grace.
And it is clearly evident that, when the gnomic will has been united to the reason of nature, the choice of those who have achieved this will be unopposed toward God;
這顯然是清楚明白的:當意志抉擇與本性之道理相合一時,那成就此事之人的抉擇,對神而言將不再有爭執對立;
1:1795
since indeed nothing contrary to reason can naturally be found in the reason of nature — which is also a law both natural and divine — whenever it receives the movement of the gnomic will operating in accordance with itself.
And if there is nothing contrary to reason in the reason of nature, it will have, in every respect, its operation in accord with God;
而若本性之道理中並無不合理之事,那麼它在一切事上的運作,便將與神相稱合宜;
1:1797
which will be] an active disposition, formed by the grace of the naturally good toward the generation of virtue.
Thus, then, is disposed in prayer the one who asks for the bread of knowledge; and after him, that other one also who seeks only the daily bread on account of the constraint of nature will be disposed in the same manner;
因此,那祈求屬靈知識之糧的人,禱告時便是如此存心;而在他之後,那僅因本性之迫切需要而只求日用之糧的人,也將以同樣的方式存心;
1:1799
forgiving his debtors their debts, inasmuch as he knows that he is by nature mortal, and, waiting each day for what is naturally destined because of its uncertainty, he anticipates nature by his gnomic will;
他饒恕欠債者的債,因為知道自己本性上是必死的,並且此後每日因(死期的)不可知,等候那本性所註定要來的事,藉意志抉擇搶先於本性之前;
1:1800
becoming of his own free will dead to the world, according to the saying which declares, 'For Your sake we are put to death all the day long;'
'we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter;'
and for this reason being poured out like a libation for all, so that, in passing over to the ageless life, he might carry along with himself no mark whatsoever of the wickedness of the present age;
並因此為眾人被澆奠獻上,好叫他在遷往那不老之生命時,不隨身帶著今世邪惡的任何印記;
