1:3643
But neither are the spiritual able to see the evil works of worldly and wicked men, or to receive within themselves their passion-laden words; rather, they too, though seeing the things of the world, do not see them, and, hearing the words of worldly men, are disposed as though not hearing them by perception; and thus there is no communion of these with those, nor of those with the things of the spiritual.
Just as the division between light and darkness is clear and their mixture impossible — for, it says, 'What communion has light with darkness, or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever?' — so also among those who have the Holy Spirit, there is such a distance and separation from those who do not have Him.
For the former have their citizenship in heaven, having already become angels out of men, while the latter still sit in the ancestral darkness and the shadow of death, riveted to the earth and to earthly affairs; and the former are illumined by the intelligible and unsetting light, while the latter are illumined only by the sensible light; and the former see themselves and their neighbors, while the latter, though seeing both themselves and their neighbors dying each day, do not know that they are men and die as men do; and not knowing this, they do not believe concerning the judgment, nor that there will be a resurrection and a recompense to each for the deeds done in life.
If you have the Holy Spirit, you will certainly know from His activities that come to be in you what the Apostle says concerning Him. For he says: 'Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom,' and: 'The body indeed is dead because of sin, but the spirit is life because of righteousness,' and: 'Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.'
For as many as have been baptized in the Holy Spirit have put on Christ entire, and are sons of light, and walk in unsetting light, and, seeing the world, do not see it, and, hearing the things of the world, do not hear them.
'...of the Spirit, for they are folly to them' — thus you should also understand concerning those who have the Holy Spirit within themselves: they bear a body, but are not in the flesh. For, it says, 'You are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.' They are dead to the world, and the world to them; for, it says, 'The world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.'
He who knows these signs and wonders to be at work in him is truly God-bearing and sign-bearing, having God — that is, the all-holy Spirit itself — dwelling within him, speaking and working in him the things spoken by Paul.
But let him who has not yet known these things in himself not be deceived: he is still flesh and blood, evidently covered by the gloom of the desires of the flesh; and flesh and blood do not inherit the kingdom of God, which is the Holy Spirit.
From divine baptism we receive the forgiveness of our sins, and are freed from the former curse, and are sanctified by the presence of the Holy Spirit; but the perfect grace, according to the saying, 'I will dwell in them and walk among them,' we do not receive then; for this belongs to those firm in faith who also demonstrate it by their works.
For after we have been baptized, turning aside to wicked and shameful deeds, we cast away that very sanctification entirely; but through repentance, confession, and tears, proportionately, we first receive again the forgiveness of our sins, and thus, together with grace from above, sanctification also.
From repentance comes the washing away of the defilement of shameful deeds, and after this, participation in the Holy Spirit — not simply, however, but according to the faith, the disposition, and the humility of those repenting with their whole soul; and not only this, but also after receiving the complete forgiveness of sins from the spiritual father and sponsor.
For this reason it is good to repent daily, according to the commanding precept; for the words 'Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand' intimate to us an unending labor.
The grace of the all-holy Spirit is given as a betrothal-pledge to souls betrothed to Christ; and just as, without a pledge, a woman has no sure assurance that her union with the man will certainly come to be, so too a soul never receives sure assurance that it will be forever with its Master and God, or be mystically and inexpressibly joined to Him, and enjoy His unapproachable beauty, unless it receives the pledge of His grace and consciously acquires it within itself.
In the manner that written contracts, unless they receive the signatures of trustworthy witnesses, do not constitute a sure pledge, so too, before the labor of the commandments and the acquisition of the virtues, the illumination of grace does not become secure.
For what witnesses are in contracts, that the labor of the commandments and the virtues are in the case of the spiritual pledge; for it is through these that each of those who are to be saved obtains the complete possession of the pledge.
First, as it were, the marriage contract is written through the practice of the commandments; then it is sealed and signed by the virtues. And at that time the bridegroom Christ gives the ring to the bride, the soul — that is, the pledge of the Spirit.
She awaits her departure from this life, being fully assured through the pledge that what has been agreed to her will prove unfailing.
Just as, when the bridegroom delays on a journey, or is occupied with certain other affairs and for the time being postpones making the marriage, if the bride, becoming angry, despises his love and either erases or tears up the betrothal document, she at once falls from her hopes toward the bridegroom — so also it is the nature of things to happen in the case of the soul.
For when one of those who struggle says, 'How long must I suffer hardship?' and grows negligent of ascetic labors, and through neglect of the commandments and abandonment of unceasing repentance, as it were erases and tears up the covenant, he at once falls completely from both the pledge and his hope toward God.
Just as, if the bride transfers to another the love due to the bridegroom betrothed to her, and lies with him openly or secretly, she will not only have no hope of receiving anything promised to her by the bridegroom, but will justly expect punishment and reproach according to the law, so also it is the nature of things to happen in our case.
If anyone transfers the love due to Christ the bridegroom toward the desire of some other thing, openly or secretly, and his heart is held fast in it, he will be hateful to the bridegroom and abominable and unworthy of union with him; for he has said, 'I love those who love me.'
The pledge becomes intangible in those who possess it — comprehended incomprehensibly, held ungraspably, seen invisibly; living, speaking, and moving, and moving the one who possesses it; flying forth from the coffer in which it is contained as though sealed, and again unexpectedly being found within it, so that the possessor considers neither its presence secure nor its withdrawal irrevocable. And thus the possessor, not having it, is as one who has it, and, having it, is as one who does not have it — such is his condition.
Just as, when someone stands inside a house at night with its doors shut on every side, if he opens a single small window and a brilliant flash of lightning suddenly shines around him, unable to bear the glare of it with his eyes, he immediately protects himself by closing his eyes and shrinks back into himself — so also, when the soul, shut in among the things of sense, at some point peers out with the mind, as through a small window, beyond them, it is overwhelmed by the lightning-flash of the pledge within it — I mean the Holy Spirit — and, unable to bear the brightness of that unbearable light, is at once struck with astonishment in its mind and shrinks entirely back into itself, fleeing, as into some house, under the shelter of sensible and human things.
Each one ought to discern from such signs whether he has received the pledge of the Spirit from Christ, the bridegroom and master. And if he has received it, let him be diligent to retain it; but if he has not yet been deemed worthy to receive it, let him be diligent, through good works and deeds and most fervent repentance, to receive it, and to guard it through the practice of the commandments and the acquisition of the virtues.
Just as the roof of every house stands by means of the foundations and the rest of the structure, and likewise the foundations, for the sake of bearing the roof, are laid as necessary and useful — and neither is a roof naturally constituted without foundations, nor are foundations of any use or benefit for life at all without a roof — so also the grace of God is preserved through the practice of the commandments, and the deeds of the commandments are laid down, for the sake of God's gift, as foundations; and neither is it the nature of the Spirit's grace to remain with us apart from the practice of the commandments, nor is the practice of the commandments useful or beneficial to us apart from the grace of God.
Just as a roofless house, left in that state through the negligence of its builder, is not only useless but brings ridicule upon its builder, so also one who lays the foundations of the practice of the commandments and raises up the walls of lofty virtues, if he does not also receive the grace of the Spirit in the contemplation and knowledge of the soul, is incomplete, and is pitied by those who are complete.
For it is from one of these two causes that he is altogether deprived of it: either he has neglected repentance, or, having grown weary in the gathering of the virtues as though facing an infinite substance, he has left out some of those things that seem to us most trivial but are in fact necessary for the completion of the house of the virtues, so that without them it cannot be roofed over by the grace of the Spirit.
1:3670
Εἰ διά τοῦτο ἐπί τῆς γῆς ὁ Υἱός τοῦ Θεοῦ καί Θεός κατῆλθεν ἵνα δι ἑαυτοῦ καταλλάξῃ γνωστῶς ἡμᾶς ἐχθρούς ὄντας τῷ ἰδίῳ Πατρί καί συνάψῃ γνωστῶς ἡμᾶς ἑαυτῷ διά τοῦ τοῦ Ἁγίου καί ὁμοουσίου αὐτοῦ Πνεύματος, ὁ ταύτης ἐκπίπτων τῆς χάριτος ἄλλης ποίας τεύξεται;
If it was for this reason that the Son of God and God came down to earth — that he might reconcile us, who were enemies, to his own Father through himself, in a manner known to us, and join us to himself, in a manner known to us, through his Holy and consubstantial Spirit — then what other grace will the one who falls from this one obtain?
Assuredly, he has neither been reconciled to him, nor has he obtained union with him through participation in the Spirit.
'Can anyone carry fire in his bosom,' says the Wise One, 'and not burn his garments?' But I say: who, having received the unbearable and heavenly fire in his heart, will not be set on fire, and made radiant, and himself flash forth the lightnings of the Godhead, in proportion to his purification and his participation in the fire? For participation follows upon purification, and purification accompanies participation. And when this comes to pass, the man becomes wholly God by grace.
The one who partakes of the Holy Spirit is freed from passionate desires and pleasures, but is not separated from the bodily necessities of nature.
And insofar as he has been freed from the bonds of passionate desire and joined to immortal glory and sweetness, he strives ceaselessly to be above and to spend his life with God, and not to withdraw even for a brief moment from the contemplation of that One and from insatiable delight in him; but insofar as he is fettered to the body and to corruption, he is dragged down and pulled by it and turned back toward earthly things, and at that time he receives, on account of this, as much grief as I think the soul of a sinner has when it is separated from the body.
Just as, for the one who loves the body and loves this life, for the one who loves pleasure and loves the world, separation from such things is death, so likewise, for the one who loves purity and loves God, for the one who loves the immaterial and loves virtue, real death is even a brief withdrawal of the mind from such things.
1:3676
Εἰ γάρ ὁ τόν αἰσθήτον τοῦτο φῶς ὁρῶν, ἐάν πρός μικρόν μύσῃ τούς ὀσθαλμούς ἤ κατακαλυφθῇ τούτους ὑφ ἑτέρου, ἄχθεται καί λυπεῖται καί φέρειν ὄλως τοῦτο οὐ δύναται, καί μάλιστα ἐάν ἀναγκαῖά τινα καί παράδοξα ἦν ὁρῶν˙ πόσῳ μᾶλλον ὁ ἐν Ἁγίῳ φωτιζόμενος Πνεύματι καί τά ἀγαθά ἐκεῖνα ὁρῶν, ὕπαρ καί νοερῶς, γρηγορῶν καί καθεύδων, ἅ ὀφθαλμός οὐκ εἶδε καί οὖς οὐκ ἤκουσε καί ἐπί καρδίαν ἀνθρώπου οὐκ ἀνέβη, () εἰς ἅ παρακύψαι καί ἄγγελοι ἐπιθυμοῦσιν, ἐάν ἀποσπασθῇ ἐκ τῆς τῶν τοιούτων θεωρίας ὑπό τινος, λυπηθήσεται καί θλιβήσεται;
For if one who sees this sensible light, should he close his eyes for a little while, or should they be covered by someone else, is troubled and grieved and cannot bear it at all — especially if he happened to be seeing something necessary and extraordinary — how much more will the one who is illumined by the Holy Spirit and beholds those good things, in waking reality and intellectually, whether awake or asleep — things which eye has not seen nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, things into which even angels long to look — if he is torn away from the contemplation of such things by someone, be grieved and afflicted?
For this seems to him death, and, quite reasonably, an estrangement from eternal life.
...they shall see visions of them — not being deceived, but gazing intently upon truths and being confirmed by revelations.
Whenever the desiring part of the soul is stirred up over the passions, and unions, and delights, and enjoyments of this life, the soul likewise sees such things in its dreams; but if its irascible part is enraged, beastlike, against those of its own kind, it dreams of assaults of wild beasts and wars and battles with serpents, contending as though in courts of law with those against whom it is at odds; but if its reasoning part is puffed up with arrogance and pride, it imagines itself sprouting wings and being snatched up into the air, and sitting on lofty thrones, and going forth as ruler of a people upon chariots, escorted and sent forth in procession.
True visions belong only to those whose mind has become simple through the visitation of the Spirit, and free from all disturbance and enslavement to the passions — those whose entire occupation is with divine things and whose meditation concerns the rewards and recompenses to come, whose life, beyond the life of ordinary living beings, is free from care, undistracted, tranquil, pure, full of mercy, wisdom, heavenly knowledge, and good fruits cultivated by the Spirit — such visions ought not even to be called dreams, but rather sights and apparitions. But for those who are otherwise disposed and do not have such qualities, their visions are false and confused, and altogether manifest deception.
But I would not prefer either of these to the other, nor would I say that one is worthy of praise and the other of blame; rather, in everything and in all works and deeds, a life lived for God's sake and according to God is most blessed of all.
Just as human life is constituted from various sciences and arts, each person plainly working at one and contributing it, and thus people live by sharing with one another and receiving from one another, providing for nature's bodily needs, so likewise one can see the same in spiritual matters: one person pursuing one virtue, another traversing a different path of life — from both of these together, all converge upon a single goal.
The goal of all who strive according to God is to be well-pleasing to Christ our God, and to obtain reconciliation with the Father through participation in the Spirit, and thereby to secure their own salvation; for this is the salvation of every soul and of every human being. And if this does not come about, our labor is empty and our work is vain, and every path of life is useless which does not carry the one running upon it to this end.
He who has forsaken the whole world and withdrawn to the mountain, as it were for the sake of stillness, and yet writes from there ostentatiously to those in the world — blessing some and flattering and praising others — resembles a man who has divorced a wretchedly-clad and utterly wicked harlot wife and journeyed to a far country in order to be rid even of the memory of her, but who then forgets the purpose for which he had taken to the mountain, and desires to write also to those who still consort with, and are defiled along with, that harlot — I mean to say — praising them too. Such a man, even if not in body, yet certainly in heart and mind, sympathizes deliberately with such people, embracing, as it were, their intercourse with her.
To the same degree that those who live in the midst of the world, and yet keep their senses and hearts pure from every wicked desire, are praiseworthy and blessed, to that same degree those who dwell in mountains and caves, if they crave the praises and blessings and glory of men, are blameworthy and to be rejected; for before God who searches our hearts, they will be as adulterers.
...both his name and his conduct in the world, he commits fornication away from God, just as the people of the Jews did of old, as David says.
He who, with unwavering faith toward God, has renounced the world and the things in the world, believes that the Lord is merciful and compassionate, and receives those who come to him in repentance.
And knowing that he honors his servants through dishonor, enriches them through utter poverty, glorifies them through insults and contempt, and through death restores them as partakers and heirs of eternal life, such a person presses on, like a thirsting hart, toward the immortal fountain by means of these very things, and through them climbs the ascent as upon a ladder — by which angels ascend and descend to help those who are climbing.
And God sits above, awaiting our purpose and zeal according to our capacity — not because he delights in seeing us toil, but because, being the lover of mankind, he wishes to give us the rewards as though they were a debt owed.
The Lord does not allow at all those who approach him without wavering to fall utterly, but seeing them powerless, works together with them and helps them, extending to them a hand of power from above, and leads them back to himself. He works together with them both visibly and invisibly, unknowingly and knowingly, until, having ascended the whole ladder, they draw near to him and are wholly united to the Whole, and forget all earthly things, being present with him there — whether in the body or outside the body, I do not know — living as citizens together with him, and enjoying the ineffable good things.
It is right for us first to submit our necks to the yoke of Christ's commandments, and neither to grow restive nor to draw back, but to walk uprightly and eagerly in them even unto death, and to fashion ourselves anew as the truly new paradise of God, until the Son, together with the Father, enters through the Holy Spirit and dwells within us. And then, when we have acquired him entirely as indweller and teacher, whatever ministry he may enjoin upon any of us and entrust to us, that one will take it in hand and will do it eagerly according to what seems good to him. It is not permitted to seek this before the proper time, nor even to accept it if it is given by men, but rather to abide in the commandments of our Master and God, and to await his command.
After being entrusted with a ministry of divine matters and excelling in it, if we are permitted by the Spirit to pass over to another ministry or work or task, let us not resist.
For God does not wish us to be idle, remaining to the end in one and the same work in which we began, but to make progress and to be ever in motion toward the attainment of better things — following, that is, the divine will and not our own.
He who has put his own will to death has altogether become without will; but among things that exist, live, and move, none is without will, except one might say only those things that are without sense and without motion. For as for plants, even though they move and grow, we do not say that they produce their motion and growth by natural will, since they are without soul; but everything that is ensouled also has a natural will.
He, then, who through ascetic effort and diligence has put to death his own will and become altogether without will, has thereby departed from his own nature, and, willing nothing, is able to perform neither good nor evil.
...his own [will], and the earth that had already received the seed, and the root onto which that incomprehensible, ineffable, and life-giving plant was grafted.
To him who cuts off his own will out of the fear of God — unknowingly, in a way he himself does not perceive — God grants his own will and preserves it indelibly in his heart, and opens the eyes of his understanding so that he may come to know it, and gives him strength to fulfill it.
These things the grace of the Holy Spirit works, and without it nothing comes to pass.
When, with all our strength, with eagerness and free choice and with unrestrainable impulse, we fulfill, without leaving out anything at all, those things which are mystically and unknowingly taught and commanded to us by God himself, then he is revealed to us openly, as to faithful and obedient ones, as to true disciples and friends, just as of old he was revealed to his holy disciples and apostles, and to all who through them believed in his name. And then we become sons of God by grace, as Paul says: 'As many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God; and if sons, then heirs also — heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.'
None of those who have been deemed worthy to come to be with God in union with the Spirit, and to taste of his ineffable good things, longs for the dishonorable and contemptible glory offered to him by men, nor for gold, or clothing, or stones considered precious by the senseless; he does not set his heart upon overflowing wealth, nor does he wish to be recognized by kings and rulers — rulers who are not truly rulers but are themselves mastered by many things; he does not consider such men to be anything great or lofty, nor does he suppose that they procure any greater glory for those who draw near them, nor will he desire anything else at all among the things esteemed illustrious and splendid by men — no more than one would desire to descend from wealth into poverty, or to fall from the greatest rule and authority and conspicuous rank into the utmost disgrace and dishonor.
If you have received forgiveness of all your sins, whether through confession, or through the putting on of the holy and angelic habit, how great a cause of love and thanksgiving and humility this should be for you — that, though deserving countless punishments, you have not only been delivered from them, but have also been deemed worthy of adoption, of glory, and of the kingdom of heaven.
Turning these things over in your mind and pondering them continually, be ready and prepare yourself in advance not to dishonor him who has honored you and forgiven your countless offenses, but rather to glorify and honor him in all your works, so that he too may glorify you in return all the more — you whom he has honored above all visible creation — and may call you his genuine friend.
To the degree that the soul happens to be more precious than the body, to that same degree the rational human being is superior to the whole world.
Do not, then, O man, upon considering the magnitude of the creatures within it, think for that reason that they are more precious than you; but rather, looking to the grace given to you, and learning well the worth of your intellectual and rational soul, sing the praises of the God who has honored you above all visible things.
Let us consider how we shall glorify God; for he is glorified by us in no other way than as he was glorified by the Son.
...having consented to be so called, let us also be glorified by him with the glory of Jesus, which he had before the world came to be from him. And these are: the cross, that is, the putting to death of the whole world, afflictions, temptations, and whatever other sufferings of Christ there may be — which, if we endure with much patience, we imitate the sufferings of Christ, and through them we shall glorify our Father and God, as his sons by grace and joint-heirs of Christ.
A soul that has not been perfectly and sensibly freed from attachment to and passionate concern for visible things cannot bear without grief the sorrows that befall it and the assaults brought upon it by demons and men; but, as though bound fast to attachment to human affairs, it is stung by losses of money, burdened by deprivations of possessions, and grievously pained by blows inflicted upon its body.
If someone has torn his soul away from attachment to and desire for sensible things and bound it to God, he will not only despise the money and possessions around him, and, being deprived of them as though they were foreign and alien things, remain unaffected by grief, but he will also endure with joy and due thanksgiving the afflictions brought upon his body, seeing always, according to the divine apostle, that the outer man is perishing while the inner man is being renewed day by day.
But otherwise it is not possible to bear afflictions for God's sake with joy, for perfect knowledge and spiritual wisdom are needed in these matters; and he who is deprived of these always walks in the darkness of ignorance and hopelessness, unable to behold at all the light of patient endurance and of consolation.
No one who is conceited on account of mathematical science will ever be deemed worthy to glimpse and behold the mysteries of God, until he is willing first to be humbled and become a fool, casting away, along with his self-conceit, the knowledge he has acquired.
For he who does this, and follows in unwavering faith those who are wise in divine things, being led by the hand by them, enters together with them into the city of the living God, and, guided and illumined by the divine Spirit, he sees and is taught what no other man has ever seen or can ever see or learn; and then he becomes taught of God.
Those taught by God are considered fools by the disciples of the wise men of this age—who are themselves in truth the fools, having been trained in the foolish wisdom of the outsiders, which God has made foolish, according to the divine apostle, and which the theologian's voice calls earthly, natural, demonic, full of contentiousness and envy.
For such people, being outside the divine light and unable to see the wonders within it, regard those who dwell in the light and see and teach the things within it as deceived—while they themselves are the ones deceived, and have no taste of the ineffable good things of God.
For this reason alone do those who are filled with grace and perfected in knowledge and wisdom from above wish to associate with and look upon those in the world—that they might procure for them some reward by reminding them of God's commandments and by doing good, if perhaps they will hear, if perhaps they will understand and be persuaded; since those who are not led by the Spirit of God walk in darkness and know neither where they are going nor at what they are stumbling.
...praying by day for their salvation; for those who are unceasingly present with God and abundantly filled with every good thing will never grieve over anything else.
That even now there are men free from passions, holy, and filled with the divine light, living in our very midst, who have so thoroughly mortified their members that are upon the earth, from all uncleanness and most passionate desire, that not only would they never of themselves conceive or set out to do evil, but even if drawn to it by another they would recognize this as some alteration of the dispassion now present in them—if only those who ascribe folly to such men, and disbelieve concerning divine matters, had known the divine words that are read and sung daily by them, who teach in the wisdom of the Spirit concerning things divine.
For if they had come to perfect knowledge of the divine Scripture, they would believe the good things spoken by God and given to us as gifts; but since, through conceit and negligence, they are without a share in such good things, they both disbelieve and slander those who have partaken of them and teach concerning them.
1:3718
Τίς ὁ σκοπός τῆς ἐνσάρκου οἰκονομίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Λόγου, ὁ ἐν πάσῃ τῇ θείᾳ Γραφῇ ἀνακηρυττόμενος καί παρ ἡμῶν μέν ἀναγινωσκόμενος, μή ἐπιγινωσκόμενος δέ, ἤ πάντως ἵνα μετεσχηκώς τῶν ἡμετέρων κοινωνούς τῶν ἐκείνου ποιήσῃ ἡμᾶς;
What is the purpose of the incarnate economy of God the Word, proclaimed throughout all the divine Scripture, and read by us yet not recognized—if not surely that, having partaken of what is ours, he might make us partakers of what is his?
