1:1
To his lord and father Peter, most worthy abbot of the brethren of Cluny, Bernard, his son and their brother, sends one golden earring. What is brought before the public ear or before the mouths of many is the part of a wise man to accuse with correction and to absolve with judgment. Indeed, to revise his own work again and again gains glory for an author; to set it forth rashly and headlong gains disgrace. Hence it comes about that every writer betakes himself to the one side or the other; and if indeed he corrects his pen by the examination of other prudent men, he acquires—even if he does not seek it—the title and name of a prudent man.
But if, breathing pride, he disdains to submit his hand to the ferule, he is convicted no less of folly than of arrogance, and therefore neither he himself nor his discourse is accepted even by the unlearned. I lie if Flaccus Horace too, in instructing his Pisos and in restraining us who write poems everywhere—according to that saying of the poet, 'the untaught and the taught alike'—I lie, I say, if Flaccus in his Art of Poetry does not agree with the very thing I hold; for there he commands that a writing which many a day and many an erasure has not restrained, and which, though perfected, he has not chastised ten times to the fingernail, should be kept back until the ninth year.
But the imprudent—nay rather the impudent—who everywhere both bring forth and thrust upon us their own inventions and their own writings, who are 'ever learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth,' while they reject the judgment of others, content with their own, suppose they know something. And since they are masters to themselves and hearers to themselves, and trusting in their own paltry talents take pride in them, they reckon the sayings of others as nothing or as little, but their own as great. But on the contrary, it is the part of the wise and the learned to compare their own work with the discourses of the learned, in them and with them and from them to learn the form and manner of writing, and to emulate and follow the arrangement and structure both of meanings and of the very words.
It is assuredly the custom of every learned man, by the judgment of his elders, to file his studies if they need a more careful file, to polish them if they need ornament, to correct them if they need amendment; and if they need none of these, then at last to finish them off as fit to be read. Considering this, I have not neglected to set before your authority, most learned father, the work here subjoined, which on the contempt of the world I have prepared and delivered in dactylic meter. I have not neglected, I say, to set it before you. For I did not judge it ought to be published with free confidence or trustworthy freedom, unless first it had been approved by the tongue of Peter—and truly of Peter—fortified with favor, corrected by judgment, strengthened by testimony. That I have called so great a person by his bare name, I pray no one be angry with me; that, doubling so great a praise, I have impressed it, let no one set down to flattery.
1:5
Scripsi, distinxi, nondum omnino absolutum edidi.
I know that, just as among ill-disposed minds glory or praise is the ruin of virtue, so on the contrary among noble minds it is a spur. Nor was it falsely said by the poet, 'Glory has a spur.' For a generous spirit ever strives, whenever anything of praise is spoken of itself, that—if it be not so as it is said—it may be so because it is said. But no one would do anything absurd if he should praise a good and God-fearing man, since to him that very praise is the material of virtue. But enough of these things. Now let me return to what I omitted. To your correction, therefore, most learned father and lord, I have determined to commit this little work on the contempt of the world. I have written it, divided it, but have not yet published it as wholly finished.
But why it has pleased me to write rather in the tenor of meter than in extended prose—if either some other or even you yourself should ask—receive it thus. To use poetic words, 'Poets wish either to profit or to delight, or to say both things at once that are honorable and fitting for life.' Indeed, what is uttered set forth in metrical song is both heard more willingly and read more eagerly, and thereby is the more easily committed to deep memory. Hence it comes about that, while the reader is enticed by the form of the verses and by the sonority of the words, he is kindled and girded for the practice of those things which he has either read or heard; and while he considers the elegance of the words, he may exercise their efficacy.
1:7
Wherefore, just as in meter there is very much grace, so in grace there is very much usefulness, and either of these two depends upon the other. This is most easy to see. For if the reader is delighted in the one, consequently he is delighted in the other also. Indeed, he who solicitously contemplates the form of the words often the more solicitously embraces the fruit of the things themselves. Hence it is that poets wrote all things, or nearly all, which they wrote, in meter; they sent them forth written, so to speak, in metrical song, taking heed even especially to this, that things which could less well be set forth in plain speech, depicted in meter, they might render pleasing. Hence too it comes about that the very psalter (as the fathers attest) lyric feet composed.
I pass over that very many pages of the Testament—which I refrain from enumerating—were, for the reason given above, issued in meter, not transmuted into meter. For in the time of revealed grace, when faith, when the Gospel, when our crucified Jesus was now reigning everywhere among the nations, the grace of the versifying art so advanced that certain of the catholics did not fear to transmute even the majesty of the evangelical page into the spondee and the dactyl. So therefore I too, imitating the style of these whom I emulate with the emulation of God; and if I was not able to attain so great a knowledge as they did either in this or in other exercises, yet to follow them I both wished and was able, and have followed.
1:9
Et mihi iterum a dilecto clamabatur, "Aperi mihi soror mea." Quid igitur?
For because among my contemporaries a fame of versifying well—though undeservedly—flitted about me, and scarcely anyone, or no one, rebuked the vices of the lost by living voice, much less by writing, my heart grew hot within me; and when in my meditation the fire of zeal burned for not a few days and nights, at last I girded myself, and spoke with my tongue what, conceived in mind, I had long concealed within me. For I had often heard from the Bridegroom, but had not heeded, 'Let your voice sound in my ears.' And again it was cried to me by the Beloved, 'Open to me, my sister.' What then?
I rose up to open to my Beloved, and said, 'Lord, that my heart may think, that my pen may write, that my mouth may announce your praise, pour into both my heart and my pen and my mouth your grace.' And the Lord said to me, 'Open your mouth, and I will fill it.' I therefore opened my mouth, which the Lord filled with the spirit of wisdom and understanding, that through the one I might speak true things, through the other clear things. Not arrogantly but altogether humbly would I affirm that, had not the spirit of wisdom and understanding been present and flowed in upon me, I could not have sustained the weaving of so long a work in so difficult a meter.
1:11
Quorum Hildebertus dum illam beatam peccatricem Mariam (loquor Egyptiam) exametris commendaret hoc metro quattuor tantum coloravit versus; Wilchardus vero plus minus triginta in sua illa contra quosdam satyra. Quorsum haec?
For that kind of meter, being a continuous dactyl except for the final trochee or spondee, and also preserving the leonine sonority, on account of its difficulty has by now almost—not to say utterly—fallen out of use. Indeed, Hildebert of Lavardin, who on account of the prerogative of his learning was first promoted to bishop and afterward to metropolitan, and Wilchard, canon of Lyons, most excellent versifiers, contributed how very little to this meter is plain. Of these, Hildebert, while commending that blessed sinner Mary (I mean the Egyptian) in hexameters, embellished only four verses in this meter; but Wilchard, more or less thirty, in that satire of his against certain men. To what does this tend?
Namely, that it may be understood that, not save by the cooperation of God and the confirming of my discourse, I wrote in that meter three little books, in which meter they wrote few—nay, very few—verses. And let these things be said with their peace. But now to the censure of your examination, most learned father, I present my meditations, and offer you my obedience as one golden earring. For some days ago, when you were at Nogent and had deigned to accept some of my little works, you perceived that this one also—because I had introduced mention of it before you—would be offered to you. Because then I could not, for I did not have it at hand, now I present it to you divided into three little books; and here I ask your correction, if it shall be needful.
Quid multa? Opus nostrum qualecumque vobis, pater, assignavi; assignatum scripsi. Scriptum Deo fautore, vel mittam absens vel offeram praesens. Accipiat ergo gratanter gratiosus pater scriptum filii, magister discipuli, dominus servi; teste enim conscientia mea fidenter audeo dicere et dico quia sum vobis filius, non adulterinus.
Nor is it amiss briefly to taste beforehand what subject matter I have assigned to each book. For in the first there is disputed the contempt of the world. In the two that follow, one face answers both as to the matter and as to the intention; for both my matter is the rebuke of vices, and my intention is to call back from vices. What usefulness, what honor the writing of these things brings forth, is hidden from no one. Why say much? My work, of whatever sort, I have assigned to you, father; assigned, I have written it. Written with God's favoring, either I will send it being absent, or offer it being present. Let the gracious father therefore receive thankfully the writing of his son, the master of his disciple, the lord of his servant; for, my conscience bearing witness, I confidently dare to say, and I do say, that I am to you a son, not spurious.
1:14
Sum vobis discipulus, non alienus. Sum vobis servus, non servilis. Quid vos michi? Immo et ego vobis? Plane, vos eritis mihi in patrem et ego vobis in filium. De cetero, Deus pacis et dilectionis vos et vestros in pace in idipsum conservet pater venerande. Amen. Hora novissima, tempora pessima sunt — vigilemus. Ecce minaciter imminet arbiter ille supremus. Imminet imminet ut mala terminet, aequa coronet, Recta remuneret, anxia liberet, aethera donet. Auferat aspera duraque pondera mentis onustae, Sobria muniat, improba puniat, utraque iuste. Ille piissimus, ille gravissimus ecce venit rex. Surgat homo reus; instat homo deus, a patre iudex.
I am to you a disciple, not a stranger. I am to you a servant, not servile. What are you to me? Nay, and what am I to you? Plainly, you shall be to me as a father, and I to you as a son. For the rest, may the God of peace and love preserve you and yours in peace in the selfsame, venerable father. Amen. The last hour, the times are most evil—let us watch. Behold, threateningly there presses on us that supreme Judge. He presses on, he presses on, to end evils, to crown the just, to reward the upright, to set free the anxious, to grant the heavens. Let him take away the harsh and hard burdens of the laden mind, fortify the sober, punish the wicked—both justly. He, the most holy, he, the most severe, behold, the King comes. Let guilty man rise; the God-man stands at hand, judge from the Father.
1:15
Surgite, currite simplice tramite, quique potestis; Rex venit ocius ipseque conscius, ipseque testis. 10 Dum licet, impia, dum vacat, omnia fluxa laventur, Detur egentibus, alta parantibus ima parentur. Agmina sobria dextra, nefaria laeva tenebit, Hinc reprobabilis ordo, probabilis inde manebit. Hinc chorus impius indeque sobrius, audiet, "Ite Ite manus rea; grex meus in mea regna venite." 20 Ibit in aethera concio dextera, praeduce Christo.
Rise up, run by the simple path, all you who can; the King comes swiftly, himself conscious, himself witness. While it is allowed, O wicked things, while there is leisure, let all fleeting things be washed away; let it be given to the needy, let the depths be made ready for those who prepare the heights. The Judge presses on, about faithfully to set forth what he will give or has given; to the good the light returns, to the evil he is harsh. He who now is scorned shall be seen imperious, intolerable, irrevocable, and high-spirited. The sober ranks he will hold at the right hand, the wicked at the left; hence the reprobate order, thence the approved shall remain. Here the impious choir, and there the sober, shall hear, 'Go, go, guilty band; my flock, come into my kingdoms.' The right-hand assembly shall go into the heavens, with Christ as leader.
1:16
Perdita crimine, planget in ordine turba sinistro Crimine perdita, crimine debita, turba gehennae. Stat modo, tunc ruet, hic stat, ibi luet acta perenne. Carnea gaudia, mens luet ebria, sobria plaudet. Denique montibus altior omnibus ultimus ignis Surget inertibus ima tenentibus, astra benignis.
Lost in crime, the throng on the left side shall mourn in their order, lost in crime, owed to crime, the throng of Gehenna. It stands now, then it shall fall; here it stands, there it shall pay for its deeds forever. Then, holy assembly, holy creation, you shall receive perpetual joys—believe it—you who now weep. The flock shall be renewed and the robber removed from the flock; the new from the old, the upright from the reprobate, the white from the black, the foe from his daring deeds, the lamb from foes, the kid from the lambs. To the poorer who seek the stars, the heights; to the tyrants, the depths. He who weeps shall pass to the heavens; he who wrongly rejoices, to the depths below. The drunken mind shall pay for carnal joys, the sober shall applaud. Then, higher than all the mountains, the final fire shall rise—for the slothful who hold the depths, the stars for the kind.
1:17
And the free flame shall rise into the air, shall rise to the stars; it shall lay waste halls, kingdoms, suburbs, walls, camps. It shall boil away all the elements now flowing with filth, and shall render all things gleaming with light, the plague now taken away. The world shall be possessed and itself made new, but another—another in image, not also in origin. There no poor man, there no feeble or weepable man, no rage or strife, no food or cook, no Venus or jest, no swelling or violence. The earth shall be renewed and the image of the world repaired, which now one chasm pollutes, holds, overwhelms. The earth bears the bones of the fathers; thereafter it shall be as a paradise; moreover, as is its wont, no settler shall till it, leaning on the ox. No longer shall there be this shape of this our air, but it shall be pure with snow, clouds, fire, thunders, and rain.
1:18
Solis et orbita lunaque concita tunc sita stabunt, Astra, polus, mare circuitum dare non properabunt. 50 Omnia sidera coelica dextera clarificabit, Sideribus dupla lux, tibi septupla sol radiabit. Gens pia flens modo, tunc ita quomodo sol renitebit, Doctaque pectora pulchraque corpora prorsus habebit, Pulchra, citissima, fortia, libera, deliciosa, Sana, vigentia iamque carentia morte perosa. Nullaque Caesaris inscia comparis illa facultas, Et Salomonia nulla potentia, nulla voluptas. 60 Non Moyses ibi sana daret sibi lumina, dentes, Matusalas breve viveret, haec bene quaerite mentes.
The orbit of the sun and the hastened moon shall then stand fixed in place; the stars, the pole, the sea shall not be quick to make their circuit. The heavenly right hand shall make bright all the stars; with double light for the stars, the sun shall shine sevenfold for you. The godly people, now weeping, shall then shine even as the sun, and shall have learned hearts and beautiful bodies—wholly so—beautiful, swiftest, strong, free, delightful, sound, vigorous, and now lacking that death which they detested. Absalom would be unsightly there beside such beauty, and his hair too; lame-footed Asahel and the hand of Israel, withered Samson. And there shall be no faculty of Caesar unaware of its equal, and no power of Solomon, no pleasure. Not there would Moses give himself sound eyes and teeth; Methuselah would live but a brief while—seek these things well, O minds.
70 Omnibus omnia clausa patentia perspicientur: Membraque singula quomodo lumina constituentur. Lumina sobria, clausa per omnia sicut aperta Aspicient ibi, quippe Deus sibi visio certa. Ora videbimus et penetrabimus abdita nostra Nilque verbere; probra patescere flendo reposta.
Seek, seek, rise up to seek pure joys—joys that stand fast, not passing away, nor about to perish. Does not the robber from the cross, weepable, bear open joys, snatched away to flowing kingdoms and lofty scepters to be ruled? Theirs are sad things, and no joys joined to the things above; compare with these, since you discern that earthly joys are nothing. Those joys we shall see, those we shall hold, those we shall know—the heavenly joys—we who now bewail each slippery thing. To all, all closed things shall be perceived as open and clear; and the several limbs shall be set up as eyes. The sober eyes, closed throughout all things as if open, shall behold there—since God is to himself a sure vision. We shall see our faces and penetrate our hidden things, and nothing by stripe; the reproaches stored up by weeping shall lie open.
1:20
Ille sciet tua crimina, tu sua, nilque pudebit. Gratia gratior hinc, manus altior illa patebit. Quo magis effera sunt tua vulnera, sive querela, Tanto probatior et manifestior illa medela. 80 Clausa vel omnia tunc dbi pervia, nil erit obstans. Scis bona fingere, plura lucrabere, vox mea constans, Orbeque fortior, ibis et ocior alite visu, Fortis habebere secula vertere vel sine nisu. Par superis eris, actibus hos geris, arte sequeris, Et patris illius, O sonus hic pius! ore frueris; Stans super aethera, sub nigra Tartara tuto videbis, Moesta, molestaque, flenda timendaque nulla timebis. Turba nefaria perdita gaudia nunc procul ante Iudicium videt; hinc flet et invidet impia sanctae.
He shall know your crimes, you his, and there shall be no shame at all. Hence grace more gracious, and there that higher hand shall lie open. The more savage your wounds are, or your complaint, the more proven and the more manifest is that cure. All closed things then shall be passable to you; nothing shall stand in the way. You know how to fashion good things; you shall gain more, says my constant voice; and, stronger than the world, you shall go swifter than the bird in sight; strong, you shall be able to turn the ages even without effort. You shall be equal to the heavenly ones, you bear them in your acts, you follow them in art; and of that Father—O, this sound is holy!—you shall enjoy the face. Standing above the heavens, you shall behold in safety the black Tartarus below; you shall fear none of the sad, troublesome, weepable, and fearful things.
1:21
90 Flet quia plurima stat sibi lacrima, gaudia sanctis. Flet quia decidit illaque perdidit ora tonantis. Ut reprobam proba sic modo reproba turba beatam Mutuo conspicit, illaque despicit hanc sibi stratam. Pulcrior est olor ex merula, color albus ab atro, Ex gemitu tonus, ex pice nix, bonus ex reprobato. Nec bona filia matre fit anxia, nec patre natus. Illa stat, haec ruit, hic bona fert, luit ille reatus. Ut placet aequore nunc tibi cernere ludere pisces, Sic apud infera nec tua viscera visa gemisces. 100 Curre vir optime, lubrica reprime, praefer honesta, Fletibus angere, flendo merebere coelica festa, Luce replebere iam sine vespere, iam sine luna;
The wicked throng, now far before the judgment, sees its lost joys; hence it weeps, and the impious envies the holy. It weeps because the fullest tear stands to it, while joys stand to the saints. It weeps because it has fallen and has lost the face of the Thunderer. As the approved beholds the reprobate, so in turn the reprobate throng beholds the blessed, and despises her now laid prostrate before her. The swan is fairer than the blackbird, the white color than the black, sound than groan, snow than pitch, the good man than the reprobate. Neither does a good daughter become anxious over her mother, nor the son born over his father. She stands, this one falls; this one bears good things, that one pays for his guilt. As it now pleases you to behold fish sport in the water, so amid the things below you shall not lament your own bowels once seen. Run, O best of men, restrain slippery things, prefer honorable things; be straitened by weepings, by weeping you shall merit the heavenly feast; you shall be filled with light, now without evening, now without moon.
1:22
Lux nova, lux ea lux erit aurea, lux erit una. Cum sapientia sive potentia patria tradet Regna patri sua, tunc ad eum tua semita vadet, Tunc nova gloria pectora sobria clarificabit, Solvet aenigmata veraque Sabbata continuabit. Liber ab hostibus et dominantibus ibit Ebraeus, Liber habebitur et celebrabitur hinc iubilaeus. 110 Patria luminis inscia turbinis, inscia litis, Cive replebitur, amplificabitur Israhelitis. Patria splendida terraque florida, libera spinis, Danda fidelibus est ibi civibus, hic peregrinis. Tunc erit omnibus inspicientibus ora tonantis Summa potentia, plena scientia, pax rata sanctis; Pax erit omnibus illa fidelibus, illa beata, Inresolubilis, invariabilis, intemerata;
A new light, that light shall be a golden light, shall be one light. When with wisdom or power the fatherly Son shall hand over his kingdoms to the Father, then your path shall go to him; then a new glory shall make bright the sober hearts, shall solve the riddles, and shall continue the true Sabbaths. Free from foes and from those who lord it, the Hebrew shall go; free shall the jubilee be held and celebrated henceforth. The fatherland of light, unaware of the whirlwind, unaware of strife, shall be filled with citizens, and shall be enlarged with Israelites. The splendid fatherland and flowering land, free of thorns, is there to be given to the faithful citizens, here to the pilgrims. Then there shall be for all who behold the face of the Thunderer the highest power, full knowledge, peace ratified to the saints; and that peace shall be for all those faithful, that blessed peace, indissoluble, unchangeable, undefiled.
一道新的光,那光要是金色的光,要是獨一的光。那時,那為父的子,以智慧或權能,把祂的諸國度交給父,那時你的路要通向祂;那時新的榮耀要使清醒的心靈輝煌,要解開謎語,並使真安息日延續不斷。那希伯來人要脫離仇敵、脫離那轄制者,得著自由而行;從此那禧年要被自由地舉行、慶祝。那光的家鄉,不知旋風,不知爭競,要被居民充滿,要因以色列人擴增。那榮美的家鄉、那開花的境地、無有荊棘的地,要在那裏賜給忠信的居民,在此賜給寄居的客旅。那時,凡觀看那發雷者面的眾人,都要得著至高的權能、完全的知識、向聖徒所立定的平安;那平安要臨到一切忠信者,那有福的平安,不能消解、不能改變、不被玷污;
1:23
Pax sine crimine, pax sine turbine, pax sine rixa, Meta laboribus atque tumultibus, anchora fixa. 120 Pax erit omnibus unica, sed quibus? immaculatis, Pectore mitibus, ordine stantibus, ore sacratis. Pax ea pax rata, pax superis data, danda modestis, Plenaqae vocibus atque canoribus atria festis. Hortus odoribus affluet omnibus hic paradisus, Plenaque gratia plenaque gaudia, cantica, risus, Plena redemptio, plena refectio, gloria plena, Vi, lue, luctibus aufugientibus, exule poena. Nil ibi debile, nil ibi flebile, nil ibi scissum; Res ibi publica, pax erit unica, pax in idipsum. 130 Hic furor, hic mala scismata, scandala, pax sine pace; Pax sine litibus et sine luctibus in Sion arce.
A peace without crime, a peace without storm, a peace without quarrel, the goal of labors and tumults, the anchor fixed fast. Peace shall be unique for all—but for whom? For the undefiled, the gentle in heart, those standing in order, those hallowed in mouth. That peace, peace ratified, peace given to those above, to be given to the modest; and the halls full of voices and of songs for the festal ones. This paradise, a garden, shall abound with all odors, full of grace and full of joys, songs, laughter, full redemption, full refreshment, full glory, with violence, plague, and griefs fleeing away, punishment exiled. Nothing feeble there, nothing weepable there, nothing torn there; there the commonwealth, peace shall be unique, peace in the selfsame. Here is rage, here evil schisms, scandals, peace without peace; peace without strifes and without griefs in the citadel of Zion.
1:24
O sacra potio, sacra refectio, visio pacis, Mentis et unctio, non recreatio ventris edacis. Hac homo nititur, ambulat, utitur, ergo fruetur. Pax rata, pax ea spe modo, postea re capietur. Iesus erit pius et decor illius esca beatis, Pascua mentibus hanc sitientibus ac satiatis. Et sitiens eris et satiaberis hac dape vitae In neutro labor; una quies, amor unus utrinque. 140 Civibus aetheris associaberis, advena civis. Hic tuba, pax ibi, vita manens tibi qui bene vivis. Hic erit omnibus una fidelibus ultima coena. Tunc cumulabitur atque replebitur illa sagena.
O sacred draught, sacred refreshment, vision of peace, the anointing of the mind, not the recreation of the greedy belly. By this man strives, walks, makes use—therefore he shall enjoy. Peace ratified, that peace, in hope now, afterward in reality shall be received. Jesus shall be the holy and lovely food of him, food to the blessed, pastures for the minds that thirst for him and are satisfied. And you shall thirst and shall be satisfied by this banquet of life; in neither is there toil—one rest, one love on either side. You shall be associated with the citizens of heaven, a stranger made citizen. Here the trumpet, there peace, life abiding for you who live well. Here for all the faithful shall be one final supper. Then that net shall be heaped up and filled full.
1:25
Denique piscibus integra pluribus, integra magnis Glorificabitur, hic removebitur anguis ab agnis, Scissa ruentibus, integra stantibus integritate. Inde cremabitur, hinc solidabitur, O Deus a te, Gens nova, grex novus, et numerus bonus ille bonorum Ierusalem petet; hic dat, ibi metet ordo piorum. 150 Grex erit inclytus hoc patre praeditus, hoc duce nixus, Qui tulit omnia sanguine noxia, rex crucifixus. Grex sacer ordine, splendidus agmine, lumine plenus, Vivet eo duce, qui tulit in cruce, rex Nasarenus. Pastus odoribus interioribus, atque superno Nectare dulcia protrahet ocia perpete verno.
At last, whole with the many fishes, whole with the great, it shall be glorified; here the serpent shall be removed from the lambs—the torn things to those falling, the whole things in their wholeness to those standing. Thence shall it be burned, hence shall it be made firm—O God, by you—a new people, a new flock, and that good number of the good shall seek Jerusalem; here he gives, there the order of the godly shall reap. The flock shall be illustrious, endowed with this Father, propped by this Leader, who bore away in his blood all harmful things, the crucified King. The flock, holy in order, splendid in array, full of light, shall live under that Leader who bore upon the cross—the King of Nazareth. Fed with inner odors and with heavenly nectar, it shall draw out its sweet leisures in everlasting spring.
1:26
Per sacra lilia, perque virentia germina florum Exspaciabitur ac modulabitur ordo piorum, Pectora plausibus atque canoribus ora parabit, Dum sua crimina lapsaque pristina stans memorabit. 160 Quo fuit amplior error, iniquior actio mentis, Laus erit amplior, hymnus et altior hanc abolentis, Unica cantio; tunc miseratio plena tonantis. Laus erit unica pro stipe coelica praemia dantis, Pro stipe praemia, pro cruce gaudia, pro nece vita; Illa tenebitur, unde replebitur Israhelita. Hic breve vivitur, hic breve plangitur, hic breve fletur. Non breve vivere, non breve plangere, retribuetur. O retributio, stat brevis actio, vita perennis; O retributio, coelica mansio stat lue plenis. 170 Quid datur?
Through the sacred lilies, and through the green sprouts of the flowers, the order of the godly shall walk abroad and shall sing in measure; it shall make ready hearts with applause and mouths with songs, while, standing fast, it shall remember its crimes and its former falls. The greater the error was, the more iniquitous the action of the mind, the greater shall be the praise, and the higher the hymn to him who abolishes it—a single song; then the full compassion of the Thunderer. There shall be one praise for the heavenly reward of him who gives the alms; for the alms a reward, for the cross joys, for death life; that shall be held fast, whence the Israelite shall be filled. Here life is brief, here mourning is brief, here weeping is brief. Not to live briefly, not to mourn briefly, shall be requited. O requital! a brief action stands, life everlasting; O requital! a heavenly mansion stands for those full of plague. What is given?
1:27
Et quibus? Aether egentibus et cruce dignis, Sidera vermibus, optima sontibus, astra malignis. Coelica gratia luminis omnia non modo donat, Sed super aethera suscipe viscera tanta coronat. Omnibus unica coelica gratia retribuetur, Omnibus omnibus ulcera flentibus accipietur. Tunc rosa sanguine, lilia virgine mente micabunt, Gaudia maxima te pia lacrima te recreabunt. Nunc tibi tristia, tunc tibi gaudia, gaudia quanta, Vox nequit edere, lumina cernere, tangere planta. 180 Post nigra, post mala, post fera scandala quae caro praestat, Absque nigredine lux, sine turbine pax tibi restat. Sunt modo proelia, postmodo praemia, qualia? plena, Plena refectio nullaque passio, nullaque poena.
And to whom? The ether to the needy and to those worthy of the cross, the stars to the worms, the best things to the guilty, the heavens to the malign. Heavenly grace not only gives all things of light, but above the heavens it crowns and receives such inward parts. To all shall heavenly grace, that one grace, be requited; for all, for all who weep over their ulcers, it shall be received. Then the rose shall gleam with blood, the lilies with virgin mind. The greatest joys, the godly tear, shall recreate you. Now to you are sad things, then to you are joys—joys how great, that the voice cannot utter, the eyes cannot discern, the sole of the foot cannot touch. After black things, after evils, after the fierce scandals which the flesh affords, light without blackness, peace without storm remains for you. Now are battles, afterward rewards—of what kind? Full, full refreshment, and no suffering, and no punishment.
1:28
Spe modo vivitur, et Sion angitur a Babylone; Nunc tribulatio, tunc recreatio, sceptra, coronae. Ergo Rachel Lea tunc patriae via, Martha Mariae, Ira Saul David, Assyrii Iudith, Achab Eliae Cedet, et omnia mitibus obvia, spes speciei, Semina fructibus et sonus actibus, umbra diei. 190 Qui modo creditur, ipse videbitur atque scietur, Ipse videntibus atque scientibus attribuetur. Plena refectio, tunc pia visio, visio Iesu; Hunc speculabitur, hoc satiabitur Israel esu, Hoc satiabitur, huic sociabitur in Sion arce. O bone Rex, ibi nullus eget tibi dicere, "Parce." Cor miserabile, corpus inutile non erit ultra, Nulla cadavera nullaque funera, nulla sepulcra;
Now we live in hope, and Zion is straitened by Babylon; now tribulation, then re-creation, scepters, crowns. Therefore Rachel to Leah then, the way of the fatherland; Martha to Mary, the wrath of Saul to David, the Assyrians to Judith, Ahab to Elijah, shall yield; and all things shall be met for the gentle, the hope of the kind, the seeds to the fruits and the sound to the deeds, the shadow of the day. He who is now believed shall himself be seen and known; he himself shall be assigned to those who see and know. Full refreshment, then the godly vision, the vision of Jesus; Israel shall gaze upon him, shall be satisfied with this eating, shall be satisfied with this, shall be associated to him in the citadel of Zion. O good King, there no one needs to say to you, 'Spare.' The pitiable heart, the useless body shall be no more; no corpses and no funerals, no sepulchers;
如今我們在指望中生活,錫安被巴比倫所困迫;如今有患難,那時有再造、有權杖、有冠冕。所以那時拉結要讓位給利亞,作那家鄉之路;馬大讓位給馬利亞,掃羅的忿怒讓位給大衛,亞述人讓位給猶滴,亞哈讓位給以利亞;萬事都要為溫柔人成就,是良善者的盼望,是果子的種子、是行為的回響、是白晝的影兒。那如今所信的,祂自己要被看見、被認識;祂自己要分賜給那些看見並認識的人。完全的舒暢,那時是虔誠的異象,是耶穌的異象;以色列要凝視祂,要因這享用得飽足,要因這得飽足,要在錫安的衛城與祂相聯。哦良善的君王啊,在那裏無人需要向你說:『開恩寬容。』那可憐的心、無用的身體不再有;沒有屍首、沒有喪事、沒有墳墓;
1:29
Quodque beatius est, mala longius omnia fient. Ob tua crimina, iam tua lumina non madefient, 200 Flendaque gaudia blandaque praelia carnis abibunt. Fraus, probra, iurgia, quid moror? omnia prava peribunt, Nulla gravamina, iam cruciamina nulla timebis: Nulla nefaria, nulla nocentia, nil grave flebis.
And, what is more blessed, all evils shall become far away. On account of your crimes your eyes shall no longer be wetted, and the joys to be wept and the flattering battles of the flesh shall depart. Fraud, reproaches, brawls—why do I delay? all depraved things shall perish; no oppressions, no torments shall you now fear; nothing wicked, nothing harmful, you shall bewail nothing grievous. The flesh that wears itself away by the cross, this flesh shall be a flower, and this ash shall be no more, whereby that man or that woman might be anxious. Neither shall anyone need to feed another with alms, nor to bend him with prayer; nor shall any, lost by plague or terrified by death or weeping at the cross, perish. By weeping you shall merit to take joys, to take a life worn neither by alms, nor by prayer, nor by plague, nor by death, nor by the cross.
1:30
210 Coelica copia, coelica gloria compatefiet, Lux nova mentibus, et Deus omnibus omnia fiet. Gens bene vivida vitaque florida, fons David undans Lux erit aurea, terraque lactea, melle redundans. Lux ea vespere, gens lue funere vita carebit. Iesus habebitur, ipse tenebitur, ipse tenebit. Lux erit illius, illius unius esca benignis, Absque cibo cibus his proprie quibus est cor ut ignis. Hunc speculabimur, et saturabimur hunc speculando, Cum chorus infimus, astra replebimus agmine sancto. 220 Spe modo nitimur, ubere pascimur hic, ibi pane.
Heavenly abundance, heavenly glory shall be laid open together; a new light to the minds, and God shall become all things to all. A people well-living and a life flourishing, the fountain of David overflowing, shall be a golden light, and a land flowing with milk, abounding with honey. That light shall lack the evening, and that people shall lack plague and the death of life. Jesus shall be held, he himself shall be possessed, he himself shall possess. His light, his alone, shall be the food of the kind—a food without food to those for whom properly the heart is as fire. Him we shall behold, and we shall be sated by beholding him, when, the lowest choir, we shall fill the stars with the holy host. Now we lean upon hope, here we are fed at the breast, there at the bread.
1:31
Nox mala plurima dat, dabit intima gaudia mane, Gaudia passio, regna redemptio, crux sacra portum, Lacrima plaudere, poena quiescere, terminus ortum, Iesus amantibus afferet omnibus alta trophaea; Iesus amabitur atque videbitur in Galilaea. Mane videbitur, umbra fugabitur, ordo patebit, Mane nitens erit, et bona qui gerit ille nitebit. Tunc pia sentiet auris et audiet, "Ecce tuus Rex. Ecce Deus tuus, ecce decor suus hic stat, abit lex." 230 Pars mea, Rex meus, in proprio Deus ipse decore Visus amabitur, atque videbitur auctor in ore. Tunc Iacob Israel, et Lea tunc Rachel efficietur. Tunc Sion atria pulchraque patria perficietur.
The most evil night gives many things; the morning shall give inmost joys—joys for suffering, kingdoms for redemption, a haven for the sacred cross, applause for the tear, rest for punishment, a rising for the ending. Jesus shall bring lofty trophies to all who love him; Jesus shall be loved and shall be seen in Galilee. In the morning he shall be seen, the shadow shall be put to flight, the order shall lie open; the morning shall be shining, and he who does good things shall shine. Then the godly ear shall perceive and shall hear, 'Behold your King. Behold your God, behold his comeliness stands here; the law departs.' My portion, my King, God himself in his own comeliness shall be loved when seen, and the Author shall be seen in the face. Then Jacob shall be made Israel, and Leah then Rachel. Then the halls of Zion and the beautiful fatherland shall be perfected.
1:32
O bona patria, lumina sobria te speculantur, Ad tua nomina, sobria lumina collacrimantur; Est tua mentio pectoris unctio, cura doloris, Concipientibus aethera mentibus ignis amoris. Tu locus unicus illeque coelicus es Paradisus. Non ibi lacrima, sed placidissima gaudia, risus. 240 Est ibi consita laurus et insita cedrus hysopo; Sunt radiantia iaspide moenia, clara pyropo. Hinc tibi sardius, inde topazius, hinc amethystus; Est tua fabrica concio coelica, gemmaque Christus, Lux tua mors crucis, atque caro ducis est crucifixi. Laus, benedictio, coniubilatio personat ipsi.
O good fatherland, the sober eyes gaze upon you; at your name the sober eyes weep together. The mention of you is the anointing of the breast, the cure of grief, the fire of love to the minds that conceive the heavens. You are the unique place, and that heavenly place is Paradise. There is no tear there, but most placid joys, laughter. There is planted the laurel and the cedar grafted upon the hyssop; the walls are radiant with jasper, bright with the fiery-red carbuncle. Hence the sardius for you, thence the topaz, hence the amethyst; your fabric is the heavenly assembly, and the gem is Christ. Your light is the death of the cross, and the flesh of the Leader is the flesh of the Crucified. Praise, blessing, jubilation sound to him.
1:33
Dos tibi florida gemmaque lucida Rex Nasarenus, Iesus homo-Deus, annulus aureus, hortus amoenus, Ianua, ianitor, ipseque portitor ipseque portus. Ipse salutifer est tibi lucifer, arrha-vir, ortus. 250 Tu sine littore, tu sine tempore, fons modo rivus, Dulce bonis sapis, estque tibi lapis undique vivus. Est tibi laurea, dos datur aurea, sponsa decora, Primaque principis oscula suscipis; inspicis ora, Candida lilia viva monilia sunt tibi sponsa; Agnus adest tibi sponsus, ades sibi tu speciosa; Pax tua praemia conditor atria, crux sacra portae, Ars tua plaudere, munera vivere iam sine morte.
Your flowering dowry and bright gem is the King of Nazareth, Jesus the God-man, a golden ring, a pleasant garden, the gate, the gatekeeper, himself both the bearer and the haven. He himself is your salvation-bearing light, the morning star, the pledge-husband, the rising. You are without shore, you are without time, a fountain now a stream; you taste sweet to the good, and the stone is to you living on every side. He himself, your God and golden stone, is to you a wall, inviolable, insuperable, by no means about to fall. To you is a laurel; a golden dowry is given, a comely bride; and you receive the first kisses of the Prince; you behold his face. White lilies, living necklaces, are to you, O bride; the Lamb is present to you as Bridegroom; you are present to him, beautiful. Your peace is the rewards, the Founder the halls, the sacred cross the gates; your art is to applaud, your gifts to live now without death.
1:34
260 Tota negocia cantica dulcia, dulce sonare, Tam mala debita, quam bona praebita coniubilare. Sors tua gaudia sine carentia, nil dare triste, Lex tua psallere, "gloria" dicere, "Laus tibi Christe." Urbs Sion urbs bona, patria consona, patria lucis, Ad tua gaudia corda soles pia ducere dulcis. Laude studens ea tollere mens mea, victa fatiscit. O bona gloria, vincor in omnia laus tua vicit.
All her business is sweet songs, to sound sweetly forth, and to rejoice together over the evils we deserved as much as over the good things bestowed. Your portion is joys without any lack, nothing sad to give; your law is to chant psalms, to say 'glory,' 'Praise to you, O Christ.' City of Zion, good city, harmonious homeland, homeland of light, sweet one, you are wont to lead pious hearts to your joys. Jerusalem, holy homeland, no mere road but a fair thoroughfare, the right Pythagorean way leads to your gifts. Golden city of Zion, milk-white homeland, comely in your citizens, you overwhelm every heart, you stop up for all both heart and lips. I know not, I know not what jubilation, what manner of light is yours, how fellowly your joys, how singular your glory. Striving to extol these things in praise, my mind, overcome, grows faint. O blessed glory, I am conquered in all things; your praise has prevailed.
1:35
Sunt Sion atria coniubilantia, martyre plena, Cive micantia, principe stantia, luce serena. Sunt ibi pascua mitibus afflua praestita sanctis. Regis ibi thronus agminis et sonus est epulantis, Gens duce splendida, concio candida vestibus albis; Sunt sine fletibus in Sion aedibus, aedibus almis. 280 Sunt sine crimine, sunt sine turbine, sunt sine lite, In Sion arcibus editioribus Israhelitae. Pax ibi florida, pascua vivida, viva medulla; Nulla molestia, nulla tragoedia, lacrima nulla. O sacra potio, sacra refectio, pax animarum; O pius, O bonus, O placidus sonus, hymnus earum. Sufficiens cibus est Deus omnibus ipse redemptis, Plena refectio propria visio Cunctipotentis.
Zion's courts are full of jubilation, full of martyrs, glittering with citizens, standing fast in their Prince, in serene light. There are pastures overflowing with good things, granted to the meek and holy. There is the King's throne, and the sound of the feasting host; a people splendid in their leader, an assembly white in white garments. In Zion's mansions there is no weeping, in those nourishing dwellings. There is no guilt, no tumult, no strife, among the Israelites in Zion's loftier citadels. There peace is in bloom, the pastures living, the marrow alive; no trouble, no tragedy, no tear at all. O holy draught, O holy refreshment, peace of souls; O loving, O good, O gentle sound, the hymn of these souls. God himself is sufficient food for all the redeemed; the full refreshment is the very vision of the Almighty.
Cernis in aethere plus renitescere sidere sidus; Sic mediocria summaque praemia credito fidus. Urbs Sion inclyta, gloria debita glorificandis, Tu bona visibus interioribus intima pandis, Intima lumina, mentis acumina te speculantur, Pectora flammea, spe modo, postea sorte lucrantur. 300 Urbs Sion unica, mansio mystica condita caelo, Nunc tibi gaudeo, nunc mihi lugeo, tristor, anhelo.
They have enough of him, yet their thirst still pants after him, without sorrows, without toils, without complaint. To this one more, to that one less—he is the open bosom of the Godhead; many a mansion stands ready, and many a recompense of the Father. As the lesser fires yield to the moon, and Phoebus to himself, she presides over the nights, and these stars that gleam, while he rules the days; so you behold in the heavens one star outshining another. Thus, O faithful one, believe in the middling rewards and the highest. Illustrious city of Zion, glory due to those to be glorified, you unfold your good things, your inmost depths, to inward sight. Inward lights, the keen edges of the mind, gaze upon you; flaming hearts now gain you by hope, hereafter by lot. Sole city of Zion, mystic mansion founded in heaven, now for you I rejoice, now for myself I mourn, I grieve, I pant.
1:37
Te, quia corpore non queo, pectore saepe penetro; Sed caro terrea terraque carnea, mox cado retro. Nemo retexere, nemoque promere sustinet ore, Quo tua moenia, quo capitolia plena nitore; Id queo dicere, quomodo tangere pollice coelum, Ut mare currere, sicut in aere figere telum. Opprimit omne cor ille tuus decor, O Sion, O Pax; Urbs sine tempore, nulla potest fore laus tibi mendax. 310 O nova mansio, te pia concio, gens pia munit, Provehit, excitat, auget, identitat efficit, unit. Te Deus expolit, angelus excolit, incolit ordo, Cui cibus additur, et sonus editur a decachordo; Florida vatibus, aurea patribus es duodenis, Clara fidelibus esurientibus hic, ibi plenis;
Since I cannot reach you in the body, in heart I often pierce through to you; but my flesh is earthen and the earth fleshly, and soon I fall back again. No man can unfold, no man can utter with his mouth, how your walls, how your strongholds are full of splendor. I can tell it as I could touch the sky with my thumb, can run upon the sea, or fix a dart in the air. That beauty of yours, O Zion, O Peace, overwhelms every heart; city beyond time, no praise of you can ever prove false. O new mansion, the pious assembly, the holy people fortifies you, advances, rouses, increases, makes you one and the same, unites you. God refines you, the angel adorns you, the angelic order dwells in you; to it food is added, and a sound is sent forth from the ten-stringed harp. You are flowery for the prophets, golden for the twelve fathers, bright for the faithful—hungry here, filled there.
1:38
Rex tibi filius unicus illius ille Mariae, Stirps sacra virginis, auctor originis osque Sophiae. Hic sapientia linguaque patria, patria dextra. Continet arbiter omnia sub, super, intus et extra, Astra regit Deus, astra cinis meus audet in illo, Qui quasi propria continet omnia facta pugillo.
In you are lilies, the pure couches of virginity; there is the rose by its blood, the purple by the light of sobriety. The choir of the fathers adorns you, and the marriage-bed is undefiled, the holy victim and the holy tear, the penalty for guilt. The King presides over you, and the Great One possesses your courts—he who is the Father's only-begotten, the mystic lion, and yet the lamb. The King is your Son, that only Son of Mary, the holy stock of the Virgin, the author of all beginning, the very mouth of Wisdom. He is wisdom and the Father's own tongue, the Father's right hand. As arbiter he holds all things, below, above, within, and without; God rules the stars, and my dust dares in him who, as if his own work, holds all things in his fist. With the Father the Son, and the Paraclete equal to both, contains all things, surpasses all, is all and everywhere.
1:39
330 Hunc bene quaerimus, ergo videbimus, immo videmus. Hunc speculabimur, hoc satiabimur, hunc sitiemus. Cernere iugiter atque perenniter ora tonantis Dat lucra iugia, perpetualia, dat lucra sanctis. O sine luxibus, O sine luctibus, O sine lite, Splendida curia, florida patria, patria vitae, Urbs Sion inclyta, patria condita littore tuto, Te peto, te colo, te flagro, te volo, canto, saluto. Nec meritis peto, nam meritis meto morte perire, Nec reticens tego, quod meritis ego filius irae; 340 Vita quidem mea, vita nimis rea, mortua vita, Quippe reatibus exitialibus, obruta, trita. Spe tamen ambulo, praemia postulo, speque fideque, Illa perennia postulo praemia nocte dieque.
Him we rightly seek, therefore we shall see him—nay, even now we see him. Him we shall behold, with him be satisfied, for him we shall thirst. To gaze unceasingly and everlastingly on the face of the Thunderer gives to the saints unending gains, perpetual gains, gives them lasting gains. O without revelries, O without mournings, O without strife, splendid court, flowery homeland, homeland of life, illustrious city of Zion, homeland founded on a safe shore, I seek you, I cherish you, I burn for you, I long for you, I sing, I salute. Not by my merits do I seek, for by my merits I earn to perish in death; nor do I hide in silence that by my merits I am a son of wrath. My life indeed, a life too guilty, a life dead though living, overwhelmed and worn down by deadly offenses. Yet in hope I walk; I beg for rewards by hope and by faith. Those everlasting rewards I beg for, night and day.
1:40
Me Pater optimus atque piissimus ille creavit, In lue pertulit, ex lue sustulit, a lue lavit. Spes mihi plurima, spes validissima stat, stet in ipso, Qui sua lumina post tua crimina praebet abysso. Dum sua suppleo robora, gaudeo; dum mea, ploro, Cum sibi gaudeo, tum mihi defleo, flere laboro. 350 Dum sua cogito viscera, suscito gaudia cordis; Dum mea sordida, mens iacet algida, conscia sordis. Magna potentia, maxima gratia laxet iniquo Magna piacula, maxima vincula daemone victo, Gratia coelica sustinet unica totius orbis Parcere sordibus interioribus, unctio morbis; Diluit omnia, coelica gratia, fons David undans Omnia diluit, omnibus affluit, omnia mundans.
That best and most loving Father created me, bore with me in my corruption, lifted me out of corruption, washed me from corruption. My hope is abundant, my hope stands most firm—let it stand in him alone, who after your crimes offers his light to the abyss. While I supply his strength, I rejoice; while I dwell on my own, I weep. When I rejoice in him, then I bewail myself, I labor to weep. While I ponder his tender mercies, I stir up the joys of the heart; while I ponder my own filth, my mind lies cold, aware of its defilement. May great power and supreme grace loose for the sinner the great expiations, the mighty chains, when the demon is conquered. The heavenly grace alone sustains the whole world's sparing of inward filth; the anointing cures diseases. Heavenly grace washes away all things, David's overflowing fountain washes all, flows out to all, cleansing all.
1:41
O pia gratia, celsa palatia cernere praesta, Ut videam bona festaque consona, coelica festa. Sim lue pectoris intro carens, foris hoste, labore, Frigore, grandine, carne, libidine, morte, timore. O sine crimine vel sine turbine, patria coeli, Te reus ardeo (plus loquar audeo mente fideli) O mea spes, mea tu Sion aurea, clarior auro, Agmine splendida, stans duce, florida perpete lauro. O bona patria, num tua gaudia teque videbo? O bona patria, num tua praemia plena tenebo? 370 Dic mihi, flagito, verbaque reddito, dicque, "Videbis." Spem solidam gero; remne tenens ero? Dic:
O loving grace, grant me to behold the lofty palaces, that I may see the good and harmonious feasts, the heavenly festivals. Let me not be inflamed in spirit, nor follow, nor speak any profane thing; let me be joined to the citizens who possess the heavens, and let me follow the Lamb. Let me be free within of the heart's corruption, free without of the enemy, of toil, of cold, of hail, of flesh, of lust, of death, of fear. O homeland of heaven without crime or tumult, guilty as I am I burn for you—I dare speak more with a faithful mind—O my hope, you, my golden Zion, brighter than gold, splendid in your host, standing fast in your leader, flowering with the unfading laurel. O good homeland, shall I behold your joys and you? O good homeland, shall I hold your full rewards? Tell me, I implore, give me a word, and say, 'You shall see.' I bear a solid hope; shall I be one holding the prize? Say:
1:42
"Retinebis." Mens mea, mens rea, non tibi pars ea iam rapietur; Est tibi lacrima pars erit optima, posce, feretur Optima portio, plena refectio, pax rata mentis, Visio numinis oraque luminis omnipotentis. Huic sitis intima sanctaque lacrima spirat, anhelat, Flendo fit hostia, flet sua noxia, flendoque velat, 380 Membra gravans gravat, acta, cor, os lavat et levat aeque, Despicit extima, pulsat ad intima nocte dieque Se flet et improbat, angit, agit, probat, est sibi fornax; Flendo cor excitat atque reclamitat:
'You shall hold it.' Rejoice, my dust: God is your portion; you are his—and may you be his. Your King is your portion, you are his; do not fail him. My mind, my guilty mind, that portion shall not now be snatched from you; the tear is yours, the best part shall be yours; ask, and it shall be granted—the best portion, full refreshment, the established peace of the mind, the vision of the Deity and the face of the Almighty's light. For this the inmost thirst and the holy tear breathe and pant; in weeping the soul becomes a sacrifice, weeps its own offenses, and weeping veils them, burdening it presses on the limbs, washes and lifts up deeds, heart, and mouth alike; it despises outward things, knocks at the inmost, night and day weeps over itself and condemns itself, torments, drives, tests itself, is its own furnace; weeping it rouses the heart and cries out again:
1:43
"O Sion, O Pax." Est lacrimantibus, esurientibus, exanimatis, Pneuma, refectio, vivificatio, visio Patris. 390 Cor fovet illius, illius unius ora videre, Agmina cernere, praemia sumere, lumen habere. Gens pia vocibus, impia gressibus, invida morum, Cur male vivitis et bona perditis illa bonorum? Gens adamantina, saxea germina, germina dura, Quid bona spernitis atque requiritis interitura?
'O Zion, O Peace.' To those who weep, who hunger, who faint away, there is the Spirit, refreshment, quickening, the vision of the Father. O holy, O loving, O thrice and more than thrice blessed is he whose portion is God; O wretched, O guilty is he who is bereft of this. He is every and the one heavenly glory, the one Creator, the giver of the gift, the very sower of heaven and the gift himself. He cherishes the heart to see his face, his alone, to behold the hosts, to receive the rewards, to possess the light. O people pious in your voices but impious in your steps, envious in your ways, why do you live so ill and lose those good things of the good? O adamantine race, stony shoots, hard shoots, why do you despise good things and seek out things doomed to perish?
1:44
Gens male provida turbaque turbida turbine mortis, Gens foris actibus introque cordibus orba retortis, Quid retro ceditis illaque spernitis intima dona? Manna relinquitis atque recurritis ad Pharaona. 400 Cur ea quaeritis, unde peribitis, unde ruetis? Cur pereuntia fine, ruentia morte tenetis? Turba theatrica, turba phrenetica, quo properatis? Quo rea pectora, quo rea corpora praecipitatis? Quid, rogo, spernitis ante requiritis ire retrorsum? Perdita gens satis, ad scelus os datis, ad bona dorsum. Fluxa manentibus, obruta stantibus, ultima primis, Cur homo praeficis altaque despicis, omnis in imis? Surge, revertere, tende resurgere, tende reverti, Pande reum reus;
O race ill-provident, a turbulent crowd in the whirlwind of death, a people empty without in your deeds, within in your twisted hearts—why do you fall back and despise those inmost gifts? You forsake the manna and run back to Pharaoh. Why do you seek those things by which you shall perish, by which you shall fall? Why hold to things passing away at last, things rushing to death? Theatrical crowd, frenzied crowd, where do you hasten? Whither do you hurl your guilty breasts, your guilty bodies? Why, I ask, do you despise what is before you and choose to go backward? Race utterly lost, you give your mouth to wickedness and your back to good things. With things fleeting for things abiding, things ruined for things that stand, last things for first, why, O man, do you prefer them and despise the heights, wholly sunk in the lowest? Rise, turn back, strive to rise again, strive to return, lay bare your guilt, guilty one;
哦,不善籌算的族類,在死亡旋風中騷亂的群眾,外面行為空虛、裡面心思扭曲虛空的子民——你們為何退後,輕看那最內裡的恩賜?你們離棄嗎哪,又跑回法老那裡。你們為何尋求那必使你們滅亡、必使你們傾倒的事?你們為何持守那終必過去、奔向死亡的事?戲台般的群眾,瘋狂的群眾,你們匆忙往哪裡去?你們把有罪的胸膛、有罪的身體急速投往哪裡?我問你們,為何輕看眼前之物,反選擇後退?徹底失喪的族類,你們把口給了罪惡,把背給了美善。以飄逝之物換存留之物,以毀滅之物換站立之物,以末後換起初,哦,人哪,你為何寧取它們,輕看那高處,全然沉淪在最低之處?起來,回轉,竭力再起,竭力歸回,有罪的人哪,要顯露你的罪愆;
1:45
ultor adest Deus, ultor operti. 410 Detege vulnera, detege funera quatriduana, Vulnera detege flendoque contege, percute sana; Gens Babylonia surgite noxia gaudia flere, Flendo repellere pulsaque tergere, tersa cavere. Hora novissima, lux venit ultima, crimina torrens, Grata sed effera, blanda sed aspera, clara sed horrens. Imminet ultio, mors, tribulatio, qualis? amara, Luxque iacentibus evigilantibus horrida clara. Qui modo sustinet, arbiter imminet ille, sed ille Versibus editur atque retexitur ore Sibyllae. 420 O tremor omnibus igne ruentibus, his quoque coelis. Rex venit ocius, hunc tremet impius atque fidelis. Hoc duce praemia, iudice gloria percipietur;
God the avenger is at hand, the avenger of what is hidden. Uncover your wounds, uncover your four-days-dead corpses; uncover your wounds, and by weeping cover them again, strike and heal. O guilty race of Babylon, rise up to weep over your noxious joys, by weeping to drive them away, to wipe away what was struck, and when wiped away, to beware. The last hour comes, the final light dawns, scorching crimes—welcome yet fierce, alluring yet harsh, bright yet dreadful. Vengeance threatens, death, tribulation—of what sort? Bitter; and a light dreadful to those lying low, bright to those who keep watch. He who now bears all, that Judge, draws near—but he is set forth in verses and recounted by the Sibyl's mouth. O what trembling for all who rush into the fire, and for these heavens too! The King comes swiftly; at him both the wicked and the faithful shall tremble. With him as leader the rewards, with him as judge the glory, shall be received;
那施報的神已近,施報於隱密事的主。揭開你的傷口,揭開你那死了四天的屍體;揭開你的傷口,又以哭泣遮蓋它們,擊打並醫治。哦,巴比倫有罪的族類,起來為你那有害的喜樂哀哭,以哭泣將它們趕逐,將所擊打的拭去,既拭去了就要謹防。末時來到,末了的光照耀,焚燒諸罪——既受歡迎卻又猛烈,既誘人卻又嚴厲,既明亮卻又可怕。報應臨近,死亡、患難——是何等的?是苦的;那光對躺臥者是可怕的,對警醒者是明亮的。那如今擔當一切的審判者已近——他卻被陳明在詩句中,並由西比拉的口述說。哦,凡奔入火中的人,並這諸天,都要何等戰兢!君王迅速來臨;無論惡人或信徒都要在他面前戰兢。以他為元帥,賞賜必得;以他為審判者,榮耀必得;
1:46
Hoc quoque vindice fraus ruet, indice culpa scietur. Mitis atrocior, agnus acerbior, alter at idem Ipse videbitur et famulabitur aether eidem. Aetheris agmina summaque culmina concutientur; Aether, humus, mare tunc sonitum dare conspicientur. Celsa cacumina sunt simul agmina celsa ruenda, Summa vel infera, sol, mare, sidera concutienda. 430 Qui modo conticet, ut bene iudicet, ille tonabit; In mala rugiet, in mala saeviet, in mala stabit. Blandus amantibus, efferus hostibus aspicietur; Hinc revocabilis, intolerabilis inde feretur. Unius ipsius, his gravis, his pius (O stupor ingens) Vultus habebitur, his miserebitur, illa refringens.
with him too as avenger, fraud shall fall; with him as accuser, guilt shall be known. The Gentle One more terrible, the Lamb more fierce, another yet the same—he himself shall be seen, and the heaven shall serve him. The hosts of heaven and the highest summits shall be shaken; then heaven, earth, and sea shall be seen to give forth a sound. The lofty peaks, together with the lofty hosts, are to fall; highest and lowest, sun, sea, and stars, are to be shaken. He who now keeps silent, that he may judge well, shall thunder; against the wicked he shall roar, against the wicked rage, against the wicked stand fast. Gentle to those who love him, fierce to his foes, he shall be seen; on this side recallable, on that side intolerable, he shall be borne. Of one and the same—grievous to these, loving to those (O immense wonder)—his countenance shall be held; on these he shall have mercy, shattering those others.
1:47
Longanimis, bonus, ille ferens onus hic reproborum, Tunc mala puniet ipseque muniet acta bonorum. Nos bona corporis, aspicimus foris; auctor at intus. Corda Deus pia scit, negat impia, iustus utrisque.
Long-suffering, good, here bearing the burden of the reprobate, he shall then punish evils and himself fortify the deeds of the good. Merit shall grind this man down; the singular mercy of the Father shall bear that man up, grace given freely—not owed to him, but bestowed upon him. Since the way of two men is foul, since the deed of both is languid, this one shall be reprobated, that one shall earn the heights of heaven. Though the way be slippery, though the cause of both be one and the same, the one shall be loved, the other shall be held an enemy and bereft. Here for many—nay, for very many or for all—an abyss arises; what is rightly taken up is here rightly driven away, that one set free, this one impenetrable, unopenable, a labyrinth. We look upon the good things of the body outwardly; but the Author is within. God knows pious hearts, denies the impious, just toward both.
1:48
Mox rosa fit rubus, ipseque cras lupus haeret ovili. Os homo, cor Deus inspicit, est reus huic, bonus illi. Facta tremat sua quisque, Deus, tua viscera fidat, Fidat, et impia fedaque gaudia flendo relidat. Ludite, ludite, corpore sospite, gens Babylonis, Ludite, cordibus ad bona segnibus, ad mala pronis. 460 Lux venit ultima quae procul optima vestra fugabit, Vestra palatia, gazophylacia vestra cremabit.
Let each man tremble for himself, and let each rejoice for you, O Grace. Let each weep for his sin and go trembling, yes trembling all over. Tomorrow he falls from the ranks who stands now in the host as though clean. The Almighty King who rules all things presses these down and gathers those. The way of man is now evil, tomorrow pious; now a rose, tomorrow dregs. Soon the rose becomes a bramble, and tomorrow the very man, a wolf, clings to the sheepfold. Man looks on the mouth, God on the heart; guilty to this One, good to that one. Let each man tremble at his own deeds; O God, let him trust your tender mercies—let him trust, and by weeping cast back his impious and filthy joys. Play on, play on, while the body is safe, O people of Babylon; play on, with hearts slow to good, prone to evil. The last light comes, which from afar shall put your 'best' to flight, and shall burn up your palaces and your treasuries.
1:49
Rex veniet pius, et furor ipsius, absque furore, (O tremor intimus) his rigidissimus, his pius ore. Virga ruentibus ordine mentibus, adveniet rex, Stantibus ordine mitior, et sine vindice iudex. Iudicium tulit esseque pertulit ante Pilatum; Iustus id exeret, id tulit, inferet id toleratum. Virgine rex satus, ipse dator datus, ipse patebit. Cur morulas paro? Carne satum caro cuncta videbit. 470 Turba nefaria cernet et impia quem crucifixit, Cui bene vocibus improperantibus, heu maledixit. Fructus in horrea tendet, et area discutietur, Sumet in omnia secula gaudia cui modo fletur. Gens ruet impia, pars Babylonia nata perire; Cedet ad aethera pacis, ad infera filius irae.
The loving King shall come, and his wrath—without wrath (O inmost trembling)—most rigid to these, loving of mouth to those. As a rod to minds falling in their ranks the King shall come; gentler to those standing in order, a Judge without an avenger. He bore judgment and endured to be such before Pilate; the Just One shall put it forth, he bore it, he shall bring in what he endured. Begotten of a Virgin, the King, himself the Giver given, shall himself appear. Why do I prepare delays? All flesh shall see him born of flesh. The wicked and impious crowd shall behold him whom it crucified, whom—alas!—it cursed with reproaching voices. He shall gather his fruit into the granaries, and the threshing-floor shall be sifted; he for whom now there is weeping shall take up joys for all ages. The impious race shall fall, the Babylonian portion born to perish; the son of grace shall pass to the heavens, the son of wrath to the depths below.
1:50
Tunc cumulabitur atque replebitur illa gehenna, Agmine criminis atque libidinis agmine plena. Huic ibi mitius, huic erit acrius, hinc fuga nulla. Deinde remissio sive redemptio non erit ulla. 480 Hic mala plangite, caetera quaerite, vos genus Evae; Hic dolor utilis, ordo parabilis hic, ibi "Vae, vae". Fraus ibi vapulat et tumor eiulat, at sine fructu. Flet petulantia, luget inertia perpete luctu. Cor variabile maeret inutile, plorat amarum, Fit sine se, sine spe, sine nomine gens tenebrarum. Quos Veneris modo, pessima postmodo flamma gehennae, Torret, agit, terit, his furit, hos ferit, ultio poenae.
Then that Gehenna shall be heaped up and filled, full with the throng of crime and the throng of lust. To this one it shall be milder, to that one sharper; from there is no flight. Thereafter there shall be no remission or redemption at all. Here bewail your evils, seek the rest, you race of Eve; here grief is profitable, the order attainable here—there, 'Woe, woe.' There fraud is flogged and pride wails, but without fruit. Wantonness weeps, sloth mourns, in unending lamentation. The fickle heart grieves, useless, weeps bitterly; the race of darkness becomes without itself, without hope, without a name. Those whom the flame of Venus now scorches, afterward the worst flame of Gehenna scorches, drives, grinds; against these it rages, these it strikes—the vengeance of punishment.
1:51
Pectora crimine, membra libidine, torrida torret, Falsiloquos premit, in tumidos fremit, omnibus horret.
It scorches breasts burning with crime, limbs burning with lust; it crushes the liars, roars against the proud, and bristles against all. It renews and slays, restores and cuts, so that bodies may die that do not die, that things standing may not be set fast, that cold may burn, that fire may grow icy—and this is sought by those fleeing this and shunned by those seeking it again. There death is in plenty, the blackest flame, a darkened light; I cannot touch each thing one by one, neither with a poor foot nor in prose; as the voice cannot bring forth, nor man set out, the joys of the good, so the voice cannot bring forth, nor man set out, the woes of the wicked.
1:52
Stare timor creat huncque statu beat, hunc lue purgat. Poena iacentibus inferet auribus ultima sensum, Veraque lacrima plectet ad ultima cor reprehensum, Quos scelus alligat hic, ibi colligat ultio plectens, Mollia mollibus, improbioribus improba nectens. Nunc levis actio, tunc ligat ultio sordidiores Sordidioribus, improbioribus improbiores. 510 Criminis agmina quomodo sarcina stricta ligantur, Et, quia sunt sine fructificamine, ligna cremantur.
To him whose now is deceit, afterward is the hard torment of pain; the torment shall punish the mind's foul things and the mouth's impious things, so that vengeance may double the lashes upon evils done, may devour the breasts and pierce the bones within and without. Let the pious hear this, that he may stand fast, and the impious, that he may quickly rise. Fear creates standing fast, and blesses this man in his standing, purges that man of corruption. Punishment shall bring its final meaning to the ears of those lying low, and the true tear shall strike to the utmost the heart that is reproved. Those whom sin binds here, vengeance, smiting, gathers there, binding soft things to the soft, vile things to the viler. Now the action is light; then vengeance binds the filthier to the filthier, the viler to the viler. As the throngs of crime are bound tight like a bundle, and, because they are without fruit-bearing, the logs are burned.
1:53
Sunt sine fructibus interioribus, arida ficus, Ramus inutilis, immo cremabilis, utpote siccus. Sunt caro terrea terraque carnea, grex reproborum, Prava creatio, mixta ligatio fasciculorum, Postmodo fletibus, hic modo risibus excipiuntur. Mortis in ignibus inque doloribus haud moriuntur.
They are without inward fruits, a withered fig-tree, a useless branch—nay, fit for burning, since it is dry. They are flesh of earth and earth of flesh, the flock of the reprobate, a depraved creation, a mingled binding of faggots, who afterward are received with weepings, here for the present with laughter. In the fires of death and in pains they do not die. As great as are their crimes, so great are the torments for the wicked; among many evils, two are the worst—cold and fire—yet neither is lighter or milder than the other. The cross presses bodies and hearts alike, both with Christ as avenger. Here the hearth of time is, compared to that, called a jest and a shadow. That fire of the eternal flames is light, and as if painted, beside it.
Gens mala vermibus haud morientibus instimulatur, Atque draconibus igne flagrantibus excruciatur.
So very great, so very mighty is the fire held there, that it could not be quenched by all the waves of the sea. So great is the cold that a fiery mass of a mountain would freeze thereby; these evils the deed of the guilty shall endure. Eyes, temples, brow, lips, breast, entrails, breasts, mouth, throat, member, and legs—these are there the fuel of the flame. There the eyes weep, weep their crimes long since past, and there is foul stench, and a heavy, fetid horror in that place. The vision of the demon and the face of the Gorgon there grow rigid; to all are laid bare all the foul and impious deeds. The evil race is goaded by worms that do not die, and is tortured by dragons blazing with fire.
O caro, nox ibi densa manet tibi, lumen abhorrens. 540 Nox simul omnibus est habitantibus in regione Mortis. Homo geme, plange, dole, treme, terrea pone. Ignea vincula denique singula membra catenant, Corpora lubrica membraque scaenica vincula frenant. Stat cruce triplice gens rea, vertice mersa deorsum, Ora tenet sua dorsa simul sua versa retrorsum, Sunt super horrida nam lue sordida, crura pedesque, Inferius caput. Haec mala sunt apud infera certe. Gens rea, plangite non ego, credite, talia fingo.
That worm in the real fires lives in such a way as a fish in the deep; and that these things shall be so, I read as I write. The cross, the lashes, the hammer, the fire, and a fiery torrent are there. O flesh, there a thick night abides for you, a light abhorring you. Night is at once upon all who dwell in the region of death. O man, groan, lament, grieve, tremble, lay aside earthly things. Fiery chains at last fetter every single limb; chains bridle the slippery bodies and the theatrical limbs. The guilty race stands upon a threefold cross, plunged head downward; its faces are turned, and its backs likewise turned backward, for above are the legs and feet, dreadful and filthy with corruption, the head below. These evils surely belong to the regions beneath. Guilty race, lament! I do not, believe me, invent such things.
1:56
Volvito pectore cur clibanus fore dicitur ignis. Mens pigra, mens vana, disce timens flagra parta malignis. Si mala suggeris hic, ibi redderis ipsa tibi fax, Ipsa cremans eris, ipsa cremaberis ignea fornax. Heu lacrimabile, vae miserabile, mens mea clama, Non ibi lucida, crede, sed horrida, sed nigra flamma, 560 Quae tamen emicat et mala duplicat igne micante, Nam patet huic tua poena, tibi sua luce nigrante.
These few things I note (I do not know every one); many I leave aside. My word is sure: that God shall set the wicked as a furnace of fire; this David affirms, this he intimates—those friends of the world. Gather, my mind, how grievous is that flame of fury: this furnace glows hot, yet a furnace is not wont to be of such heat. Ponder in your breast why the fire is said to be a furnace. Sluggish mind, vain mind, learn in fear the lashes prepared for the wicked. If you suggest evils here, there you yourself shall be rendered a torch; you yourself shall be burning, you yourself shall be burned, a fiery furnace. Alas, woe to be wept! Woe, miserable! O my mind, cry out: not a bright flame there—believe it—but dreadful, but a black flame, which nevertheless flashes and doubles the evils with its gleaming fire; for your punishment lies open to it, while its light blackens for you.
1:57
Ultio pectora frigore, corpora concremat igne; Utraque pars ruit in scelus, hoc luit utraque digne, Quod gravioribus iste reatibus est cruciatus, Dicit homo-Deus illeque Iob meus, ille probatus. Qui male praeminet ultroque sustinet interiores, Ut Deus astruit, in tenebras ruit exteriores. Hic nisi fles, ibi fletus erit tibi denteque stridor. Fumus ab ignibus hunc cremat editus, hunc gravis algor. 570 Sana probatio quod cruciatio frigoris, ignis, Sit pereuntibus atque luentibus acta malignis. Iob quoque pagina, si sacra carmina Iob bene signes, Hos ait incitus a nive transitus urget ad ignes. Testis et hic ratus;
Vengeance burns up the breasts with cold, the bodies with fire; each part rushes into wickedness, and each part justly pays for it, since this one is tortured for graver guilt—so says the God-man, and that Job of mine, that proven one. He who unworthily lords it over others and willfully oppresses his inferiors rushes, as God affirms, into the outer darkness. Unless you weep here, there shall be weeping for you and gnashing of teeth. The smoke sent forth from the fires burns this man, a heavy chill burns that one. It is a sound proof that the torment of cold and of fire is a deed wrought upon the wicked who perish and pay the penalty. The page of Job too—if you mark well Job's sacred verses—says, roused, that a passage drives men from the snow to the fires. And this witness is sure here;
報應以寒冷焚燒胸膛,以火焚燒身體;各部分都奔入邪惡,各部分也都公義地為此付代價,因這人為更重的罪愆受折磨——那神而人者如此說,並我那位約伯,那位被試驗的。那不配地轄管別人、又任意欺壓下屬的,正如神所肯定的,必衝入外面的黑暗。你若不在此哀哭,在彼必有哀哭切齒。從火中發出的煙焚燒這人,沉重的寒氣焚燒那人。這乃是確據:寒冷與火的折磨,是施行在滅亡並受刑罰的惡人身上的。約伯書也是——你若細察約伯聖潔的詩句——它被激動而說,有一條路把人從雪中驅往火中。這見證在此是確實的;
1:58
ergo stili latus est mihi tectum, Rege, satellite, principe, milite, quod bene septum. Quomodo praemia, sic flagra iugia, regna piorum, Regna perennia, perpetualia flagra malorum. His decor amplior, his dolor auctior est sine fine. Pars habet aethera, perditur altera strata ruinae. 580 Corpora lubrica, corda tyrannica percruciantur; Frigore grandinis haec, face fulminis illa cremantur. Arctat, arat, terit, angit, agit, ferit illa gehenna, Vi, cruce, pondere, frigore, verbere, perpete poena. Est ibi, credite, crux sine stipite, mors sine morte, Vox sine carmine, lux sine lumine, nox sine nocte. Non ibi publicus arbiter Aeacus aut Rhadamanthus;
therefore the side of my pen is roofed over, well hedged about by King, attendant, prince, and soldier. As are the rewards, so are the unceasing lashes: the kingdoms of the pious are everlasting, the lashes of the wicked perpetual and lasting forever. For these the beauty is ampler, for those the grief is the greater, without end. One part holds the heavens; the other is lost, laid low in ruin. The slippery bodies and tyrannical hearts are racked through; these are burned with the cold of hail, those with the brand of lightning. That Gehenna confines, plows, grinds, torments, drives, strikes, with force, with cross, with weight, with cold, with scourge, with perpetual punishment. There, believe it, is a cross without a stake, death without death, a voice without song, light without brightness, night without night. No public arbiter Aeacus or Rhadamanthus is there;
所以我筆鋒的這一面已蒙遮蓋,被君王、侍從、君長、兵丁妥善圍護。賞賜如何,那不止息的鞭笞也如何:虔誠人的國度是永遠的,惡人的鞭笞是永久、永遠長存的。對這些人,美麗更加豐盛;對那些人,憂傷更為深重,永無止境。一部分得著諸天;另一部分卻喪亡,仆倒在毀滅中。滑溜的身體與暴虐的心被徹底拷打;這些以冰雹的寒冷被焚燒,那些以閃電的烙印被焚燒。那地獄囚禁、犁耕、碾磨、折磨、催逼、擊打,以暴力、以十架、以重壓、以寒冷、以鞭笞、以永久的刑罰。信這話:那裡有沒有立柱的十字架,沒有死亡的死亡,沒有歌唱的聲音,沒有光輝的光,沒有黑夜的黑夜。那裡沒有公眾的審判官埃阿科斯或拉達曼提斯;
1:59
Poena nigerrima, poena gravissima, poena malorum, Mens male conscia cordaque noxia, vermis eorum. Caeditur invida mens, caro sordida membraque lena, Perpete vulnere, perpete sulphure, perpete poena. Assur ibi tremit et sua gens gemit, esca draconis; Post sua lilia perdita, filia flet Babylonis. Quam male florida, quam sibi fulgida, quam stetit aucta, Tam modo marcida, tam iacet horrida, tam labefacta.
no Cerberus there, nor infernal fury, vengeance, lamentation. No boatman there, nor a skiff endowed with the voice of Maro; but what? Burning, night, torment, the death of Babylon. The law given to Typheus does not hold Orpheus' strong reins there, no heavy stone is here, nor bird tearing the inward parts. The blackest pain, the heaviest pain, the pain of the wicked—the evil-conscious mind and the noxious hearts—is their worm. The envious mind is smitten, the filthy flesh, the seductive limbs, with perpetual wound, perpetual sulphur, perpetual punishment. There Assur trembles and his people groan, the food of the dragon; after her lilies are lost, the daughter of Babylon weeps. As ill flowering, as glittering to herself, as exalted she stood, so now she is withered, so she lies dreadful, so cast down.
1:60
Illaque Iezabel, illa tonans Babel ore rebelli Ivit in infera; plaudite sidera, psallite coeli!
She has become a harlot, a goddess to herself, full of poisons; she has stood subjected to filth, and is subjected too to every punishment. They drank from her mouth her sweet honey—nay, her very gall—who now seek the slippery and flighty joys, who wickedly prefer the perishing gains, the falling kingdoms, to the eternal, who are full of foolish salt within themselves. The wines of her desire and lust the wicked crowd has drunk, for whom Babylon has shut up the stars. The die is cast: as delighted as she was before, so now she is laid low with harsher torments. What is she now known or seen to be? That ash? She has utterly dried up, has utterly fallen, and is utterly ruined. And that Jezebel, that Babel thundering with rebellious mouth, has gone down to the depths below; clap your hands, you stars, sing psalms, you heavens!
1:61
Quae male creverat auctaque dixerat, "Est meus orbis!" Se quoque perdidit, occidit, occidit in loca mortis. Terra nigredine terraque turbine mortis operta; Mors ibi plurima certaque lacrima, passio certa. 620 Illa tragoedia durat in omnia secula, durat, Cum dolor ubera, tortio viscera, flamma cor urat. Clamor ibi tacet, horror ibi iacet umbraque mortis; Fert ibi crimina, fert cruciamina fortia fortis. Corda potentia sunt patientia flagra potenter. Ardet edax gula linguaque garrula crapula, venter, Tortio plurima constat et intima poena malignis, Plurima tortio, plurima passio, plurimus ignis.
She who had grown wickedly, and, magnified, had said, 'The world is mine!'—she has lost herself, has fallen, has fallen into the place of death. That land is deeper and more darksome than earth; there the guilty race weeps, but its tear is far too late. A land covered with the blackness and the whirlwind of death; there death is in plenty, the tear is sure, the suffering sure. That tragedy lasts unto all ages, lasts on, while grief burns the breasts, torment the entrails, the flame the heart. There the cry falls silent, there horror lies, and the shadow of death; there the strong man bears his crimes, bears his mighty torments. Mighty hearts are mighty in enduring the lashes. The devouring gluttony, the babbling tongue, the surfeit, the belly, burn. There is exceeding torment and inmost punishment for the wicked—exceeding torment, exceeding suffering, exceeding fire.
1:62
Undat ibi niger ignis et impiger excruciare, Corda nefaria luxuriantia membra cremare. 630 Nox mala duplicat et Stygis emicat olla vaporans, Flamma nigerrima torret et intima, nil ibi rorans. Planctibus insonat, ignibus intonat unda camini; Non ea tristia, non querimonia subdita fini. Ignea flumina, nigra volumina flamma retorquet; Brumaque torrida flammaque frigida pectora torquet. Vermis edax scatet et puteus patet altus abyssi. Sunt ibi pectore, sunt ibi corpore quique remissi. Ludite, vivite foenore divite, gens aliena! Vos caro decipit hic, ibi suscipit illa gehenna. 640 Non ibi visio, non ibi mansio luce repleta, Non locus ordinis aulaque luminis arvaque laeta.
There the black fire surges, tireless to torment, to burn up the wicked hearts and the wanton limbs. The evil night doubles, and the steaming cauldron of Styx flashes out, the blackest flame scorches even the inmost parts, with nothing there to give dew. The wave of the furnace resounds with lamentations, thunders with fires; nor are those griefs, nor that complaint, subject to an end. The flame whirls back fiery rivers, black coils; the scorching frost and the freezing flame rack the breasts. The devouring worm teems, and the deep pit of the abyss lies open. There are all who were lax, lax in heart, lax in body. Play on, live on, with rich usury, you alien race! The flesh deceives you here; there that Gehenna receives you. There is no vision there, no mansion filled with light, no place of order, no hall of light, no glad fields.
1:63
O Maro falleris hic ubi conseris arva piorum; Elysios ibi non reperis tibi, scriptor eorum. Musa poetica, lingua scholastica, vox theatralis, Haec quia disseris et male falleris, et male fallis. Fulgurat ignibus haud radiantibus illa gehenna; Plena nigredine plenaque turbine plenaque poena.
O Maro, you are deceived here, where you sow the fields of the pious; you find no Elysium there for yourself, you who wrote of them. The poetic Muse, the scholastic tongue, the theatrical voice—because you treat of these and are badly deceived, you also badly deceive. That Gehenna flashes with fires that give no light; full of blackness, full of whirlwind, full of punishment, full of lust and of vice it is, with its handmaids—the souls leaping out from here, falling back to here. Those whom it vomits up it devours, on every side it pierces them through, plagues on every side; and one life survives the deaths that come. The fire of the loins and of lust burns within the fire, it burns, it burns; that vengeance is repaid as it deserves. He who is wickedly exalted here is there cast down, driven to the lowest; then he holds the worst places, holds the lowest, who now holds the first.
1:64
Qui laniat, capit, excruciat, rapit, hic rapietur, Dilaniabitur, excruciabitur, arripietur. Quos modo fictio, tunc premit ultio, quos probra moeror, Quos Venus ustio, quos gula tortio, quos lucra terror. 660 Dum licet auribus haec vigilantibus accipiatis, Qui lucra conditis, in lucra curritis, ad lucra statis. Gens cita pascere viscera viscere carneque carnem, Qui tumidis satis exiguis datis heu! neque panem. Est modo Lazarus hic, ibi Tartarus, et gula pridem Ebria potibus, ebria pastibus ardet ibidem. Dives obit sine spe, sine nomine dives, (egenus Nomine Lazarus) unde flet inferus, est modo plenus. Dives aquam petit, esuriens metit ubera plena; Gratia fletibus, ebrietatibus est modo poena.
He who tears, seizes, tortures, snatches—here he shall himself be snatched, shall be torn to pieces, shall be tortured, shall be carried off. Those whom feigning now grips, then vengeance shall grip; those whom reproaches grip with grief, whom Venus with burning, whom gluttony with torment, whom gains with terror. While it is still permitted, take these things in with watchful ears, you who hoard gains, who run after gains, who stand at gains. O race swift to feed your flesh with flesh and flesh with flesh, who to the bloated give enough, yet to the needy—alas!—give not even bread. Here is Lazarus, there is Tartarus; and gluttony, long since drunk with drinks, drunk with feastings, there burns in that very place. The rich man dies without hope, without a name—the rich man (the needy one named Lazarus)—whence the underworld weeps; it is now full.
Gratificans ape vina, dapes dape, vesteque vestes, Fert sua crimina, fert cruciamina, fert modo pestes. Flos ruit et decus in Stygium specus, in specus atrum. Flos quasi flos fuit; enituit, ruit ad cruciatum. 680 Cui fuerat minus huic Abrahae sinus, huic paradisus; Cui magis ustio, lacrima, tortio poenaque, risus. Nunc ubi pallia? Nunc ubi prandia? Nunc ubi coena?
The rich man asks for water; the hungry one reaps the full breasts. Grace by weepings, punishment by drunkennesses, is now his portion. After their funerals, the rich man goes to the depths below, the poor man to the stars. He who weeps in his sore rejoices in the heavens; gluttony, once fed, weeps. A little drop is sought, and gluttony bewails it, and the mouths are dry. No little drop is given. Why? Because the little crumb was not given. He who gave less returns to begging for the least. He stood at the wine-cups, and now seeks a stream that is not to be granted. Pleasing himself with bees' wine, with banquet upon banquet, with robes upon robes, he now bears his crimes, bears his torments, bears his plagues. The flower has fallen, and its glory into the Stygian cave, into the black cave. The flower was like a flower; it shone, and fell to torment. To him who had less belongs Abraham's bosom, to him paradise; to him who had more, burning, the tear, torment, punishment—and laughter. Now where are the robes? Now where the dinners? Now where the supper?
1:66
Pallia, prandia sunt fugientia; stat sibi poena. Purpura transiit escaque finiit; ultio restat. Restat et acriter, immo perenniter illa molestat. Flamma, fames, sitis, ultio divitis extat egentis, Pro grue, pro sue, pro dape, pro lue, pro face ventris. Grus, lepus, ostrea vel caro taurea, iuncta suillae, Faxque cupidinis, alea criminis et iocus ille, 690 Maneque prandia, sero cibaria praeterierunt; Luce tyrannica nocteque lubrica facta ruerunt. Ille vir affluus, ille vir efferus illeque multus Est apud infera, fert ita littera sacra, sepultus. Aure capescite, mente recondite talia, dites:
The robes, the dinners are fleeting; for him the punishment stands fast. The purple has passed, the food has ended; vengeance remains. It remains, and bitterly—nay, perpetually—it torments. Flame, hunger, thirst, the vengeance of the rich man, the lack of the needy, stand fast in place of crane, of pig, of feast, of luxury, of the brand of the belly. Crane, hare, oyster, or bull-beef joined to pork, the brand of desire, the dice of crime, and that jesting, and the morning's dinners, the evening's victuals—they have passed away; by the tyrannical light and the slippery night these deeds have come to ruin. That overflowing man, that fierce man, that man of many things, is buried in the depths below—so sacred Scripture bears witness. Take in with your ears, lay up in your minds such things, you rich:
1:67
Tollite saucia, ferte iacentia, pascite mites, Hos stipe pascite qui prece divite vos bene pascant, Ne vel egentia vel sitientia membra labascant. Condite mentibus, edite moribus, edite factis, Quaeque fides pia clamat, amat via sobrietatis. 700 Mente reponite, vocibus edite, re date rectum: Sitis egentibus esca, viantibus atria, tectum. Vos date vestraque; vult Deus utraque, gaudet utrisque; Se domino sua pauperibus lucra det bene quisque. Multa quid astruo? Iam simul instruo vos ego mecum. Demus egentibus ima gerentibus optima secum. Qui dedit omnia Christus ad ostia nostra gemiscit; Indiget, eiulat, ultima postulat, "huc date" dicit. Nemo dat, indiget. Ergo quid? Exiget ipse negatum.
Lift up the wounded, carry the fallen, feed the meek. Feed with your alms these who with rich prayer may feed you well, lest the needy or thirsting limbs grow faint. Lay up in your minds, bring forth in your conduct, bring forth in your deeds whatever pious faith proclaims and the way of sobriety loves. Lay up in mind, bring forth in voice, give in deed what is right: be food to the needy, courts to the wayfarers, a roof. Give yourselves and your goods; God wills both, rejoices in both; let each man well give his own gains to the Lord, his own to the poor. Why do I build up much? Now I instruct you all together with myself. Let us give to the needy who bear the lowest, the best things along with them. Christ, who gave all things, groans at our doors; he is in want, he wails, he asks for the last, he says, 'Give here.' No one gives, he is in want. What then? He himself shall exact what was denied.
1:68
Tollimus ebria gens, modo gaudia, post cruciatum. Hinc tibi Lazarus indeque Tartarus, hic fugis illum. Pasce, fer, aspice, ne reus abiice corde pusillum. Terrea tu sibi, pauper homo tibi coelica praestat. Pane Deum dabit; hic obit, hic abit, hic tibi restat. Terrea gloria, terrea copia plena favillae. Gloria corruit et status aruit illius ille. 720 Audiat auribus interioribus, audiat orbis.
We take up joys now, drunken race—after them, torment. Behold, you hoard up wealth and great gains here, O miser, nor do you keep count here, since to count belongs to the poor man. O impious beast, you see Christ lament at your doors, mingled here with the hungering and the thirsting. From this side Lazarus is yours, from that side Tartarus; here you flee that one. Feed him, carry him, behold him; lest, made guilty, you cast away the little one from your heart. Earthly things you furnish him; the poor man furnishes you heavenly things. By a loaf he will give you God; here he dies, here he departs, here he remains for you. Earthly glory, earthly abundance, are full of ashes. The glory has fallen, and that man's estate has dried up. Let him hear with inward ears, let the world hear. As a wheel's rim the world is turned, driven by the whirlwind of death; it passes and perishes, and the pleasant world bears but a mist.
1:69
Tollitur ocius ipse vel ipsius omne serenum. Orbis honor levis est, atomus brevis, et breve festum; Nil dat amabile, nil amat utile, ridet honestum. Hosteque pectoris hosteque corporis intus et extra, Horruit aridus, aruit horridus et sua festa. Orbis amor perit atque suos terit orbis amantes, Et sua gaudia, gaudia tristia vera putantes. 730 Evigilabimus an remanebimus in lue mundi, Quem patet ignibus, alluvionibus, hoste retundi? Quid vaga, quid rea corda colunt ea quae nihil extant, Quae breve plaudere, non breve plangere, post breve praestant? Cur caro proximus ignis et intimus hostis amatur? Carnis amor perit; est rosa, fex erit; ergo spuatur.
Swiftly the world itself, or all its calm, is taken away. The world's honor is light, a brief atom, and a short feast; it gives nothing lovely, loves nothing useful, mocks at what is honorable. By the enemy of the breast and the enemy of the body, within and without, it grew rough and dry, it withered, horrid, and so did its festivals. The world's love perishes, and the world wears down its own lovers, who reckon its joys, sad joys, to be true joys. Shall we awake, or shall we remain in the corruption of the world, which plainly is to be beaten down by fires, by floods, by the foe? Why do wandering, guilty hearts cherish those things that are nothing, that grant brief applause but no brief lament, after a brief while? Why is the fire so near to the flesh and the inmost enemy loved? The love of flesh perishes; it is a rose, it will be dregs—therefore let it be spat upon.
1:70
O caro candida, post breve foetida plenaque fecis, Flos modo, mox fimus, et fimus infimus, unde tumescis? O caro carnea iam, modo glarea, postmodo vermis; Nunc homo, cras humus, istud enim sumus. Unde superbis? 740 O caro debilis, O cito labilis, O male mollis, Quid petis ardua, quid tibi cornua ferrea tollis? Quid tibi crapula milleque fercula milleque pastus? Res lue proflua vivaque mortua, cur tibi fastus? Unde superbia? Fex tua gloria; morte remissa. Fex tua prandia, fex tua gaudia, fex es et ipsa. Quid tibi balnea vestis et aurea? Quid tibi venter? Culta licet caro, semper eris caro, nec caro semper. Post hominem cinis es, caro desinis esse, putrescis.
O fair flesh, after a brief while foul and full of dross, now a flower, soon dung, and the lowest dung—whence do you swell? O fleshly flesh, now gravel, afterward a worm; now a man, tomorrow earth—for that is what we are. Whence are you proud? O feeble flesh, O quickly perishing, O evilly soft, why do you seek lofty things, why do you raise iron horns for yourself? Why for you the surfeit, the thousand dishes, the thousand feedings? A thing flowing out with corruption, a living dead thing—why your haughtiness? Whence your pride? Dross is your glory; with death it is forgiven. Dross your dinners, dross your joys, dross you are yourself. Why for you the baths, the garments, the golden robe? Why for you the belly? Though the flesh be cultivated, you shall always be flesh, yet not always flesh. After being a man you are ash; you cease to be flesh, you rot.
1:71
Vis tibi quantula sit docet urnula massaque fecis. 750 O caro lactea, nunc rosa, postea sarcina vilis, Flos tibi corruet et rosa defluet haec iuvenilis. Quae modo florida, cras erit horrida plus loquor, horror, Horror amantibus horror et hostibus, omnibus horror. Cras eris horrida, cras eris arida, vilis, amara, Tu modo candida, tu modo florida, tu caro cara. Tristia replico, defluet illico forma decoris, Illico defluet, illico corruet, hic nitor oris. Plurima quid sequor? Illa caro, decor ille peribit, Haec Venus, hic calor, ars ea seu valor ibit, obibit. Coenum. Quid, rogo, carnea gloria? Glarea. Quid rosa? Foenum.
How small your worth is, the little urn and the mass of dross teach you. O milk-white flesh, now a rose, afterward a vile burden, your flower shall fall, and this youthful rose shall waste away. What is now flowery shall tomorrow be dreadful—I say more: a horror, a horror to those who love, a horror to enemies, a horror to all. Tomorrow you shall be dreadful, tomorrow you shall be parched, vile, bitter—you who are now fair, you who are now flowery, you, dear flesh. Sad things I repeat: that beauty's form shall flow away at once, at once it shall flow away, at once it shall fall, this radiance of the face. Why pursue many things? That flesh, that beauty shall perish; this Venus, this warmth, that art or worth shall go, shall die. What is the perishable flesh, or what is useless man? Mire. What, I ask, is fleshly glory? Gravel. What is the rose? Hay.
1:72
Carnea gloria carnis et omnia, carne vigente, Sunt quasi stantia, deficientia deficiente. Cur homo nascitur aut puer editur? Ut moriatur. Exit in aera, sustinet aspera, migrat, humatur. Glarea labilis, aura volatilis est homo natus. Mane stat aggere, nec mora, vespere fertur humatus. Qui modo flos fuit, in spacio ruit unius horae. Mox rapitur, licet ingenio micet atque decore. 770 Fit cinis infimus, ille probissimus et preciosus, Irreparabilis, irrevocabilis, officiosus. Gleba reconditur atque recluditur hospite tumba. Laus stat imaginis umbraque nominis, immo nec umbra. Vir subit Aethera, si bene; Tartara, si male gessit. Corpus humi iacet, ars perit, os tacet, aura recessit.
Fleshly glory and all things of the flesh, while the flesh flourishes, are as it were standing—failing when it fails. Why is man born or a boy brought forth? That he may die. He comes out into the air, endures hardships, departs, is buried. Slippery gravel, fleeting breeze, is man new-born. In the morning he stands on the mound; and without delay, in the evening he is borne to burial. He who was just now a flower falls in the space of a single hour. Soon he is snatched away, though he shine with genius and with beauty. He becomes the lowest ash, that most upright and precious man—irreparable, irrevocable, full of duty. The clod is hidden away and shut up, the tomb its host. The praise of his image stands, and the shadow of his name—nay, not even a shadow. The man rises to the heavens, if he did well; to Tartarus, if he did ill. The body lies in the ground, the art perishes, the mouth is silent, the breath has departed.
He becomes dross who was a man; even the one who loves him spits upon him, the beloved shudders at him, and denies that he knows him, hastens that he may quickly cover the limbs over, hastens to carry him out, and weeps and commands and prepares the urn—nor does he groan three days; alas! he presses out a single day's tear with his nail. Soon he bears the bier, or goes before the bier, or follows praying; at last with funeral lamentations he goes as if mourning. Weeping he goes, exulting he returns; once he gave the bones to the tomb, he withdrew. The loving affection departed, as that man's open-handed gift departed. He died, he died—here where he lost his money and his friend, who had smiled upon himself; he was a lover of money, O wicked heart! That most upright, that most mighty, that man, he—what is he, I pray, and his beauty? An urn of ashes.
1:74
Pulcher, amabilis, irreparabilis, unicus, aptus Instar aquae fluit, e medio fugit illico raptus. Cur morulas paro?
Beautiful, lovely, beyond recovery, unique, well-formed — it flows away like water, and snatched off it suddenly flees from our midst. Like a beast there falls at once all comeliness and all glory; warmth and color grow chill, and thereupon the sorrow of youth departs. Why do I contrive delays? Dear flesh lying there, you are dregs, you are buried; you let yourself be what you are; into ashes, ash, you are wasted away. Why does food flow, why does the throat surge with drink and dainties? Fed on viands you are yourself a viand for the flesh, for worms, and you rot. It is yours to behold your limbs pale in death, or your face pale in death, cold to the senses, and shrunk to less than itself. The golden or tawny locks that you tossed about your ivory neck now lie low; the heart and the mouth fall silent, with which you once thundered. The eyes lack their sight, the ears their hearing, the mouth its speech; the nose lacks scents, the heart its loves, the bones their warmth.
1:75
Ad mala pes citus ac oculus situs in muliere Collaque lactea, brachia cerea computruere. Cerea brachia tam specialia quam speciosa, Membraque lubrica continet unica parvaque fossa. Candidus antea dens, labra flammea, flos faciei Et gena lucida sunt modo putrida, pars saniei. Nunc ubi pocula, nunc ubi fercula, fercula mille? Nunc ubi baltheus, annulus aureus, aurea vitta? Patria nomina nunc ubi culmina sunt proavita? Rege caro sata vermibus est data factaque vermis; Regibus edita rebus et obsita, nunc es inermis.
The foot swift to evil, the eye set upon a woman, the milk-white neck and the waxen arms — all have rotted away. Arms waxen-soft, as choice as they were comely, and the supple limbs are held by a single little pit. The teeth once white, the flame-red lips, the bloom of the face and the bright cheek are now but rotten, a portion of putrid matter. Where now are the goblets, where now the courses, the thousand courses? Where is that first bloom, where that ruddy-rose complexion? Where the softer voice, where the more enticing laughter, the wanton speech and the frenzied glance bent to vile deeds? Where now the girdle, the golden ring, the golden fillet? Where now the ancestral names, the heights inherited from forefathers? Begotten of a king, that flesh has been given to worms and become a worm; born of kings and heaped with possessions, now you are defenceless.
1:76
Corpus amabile nunc es inutile corpus, et atrum; Morte resolveris atque cadaveris es simulacrum. Terrea gloria nunc quasi lilia, cras quasi ventus: Pulchra fugit modo tempore postmodo morte iuventus. 820 Splendida pectora, splendida corpora corpus habentur, Utque senilia sic iuvenilia busta videntur. Mox puer interit ut rosa deperit edita vere, A valido vigor, eripitur nitor a muliere. Lyncea lumina mentis acumina si quis haberet, Fellea dulcia pulchraque turpia, credo, videret; Corpora candida, pectora vivida, membra venusta Ossaque regia sint modo qualia, consule, busta. Vociferantia seque minantia busta loquuntur:
You that were a lovely body are now a useless body, and a dark one; you are loosed by death and are but the phantom of a corpse. Earthly glory is now like the lily, tomorrow like the wind: youth in its beauty flees but a little while, and thereafter by death. Splendid breasts, splendid bodies are reckoned but a body, and youthful graves are seen to be like the graves of the aged. Soon the boy perishes as the rose put forth in spring fades away; vigor is wrested from the strong, beauty from the woman. If anyone had a lynx's eyes, the keenness of the mind, he would see, I believe, sweet things bitter and fair things foul; consider what the gleaming bodies, the living breasts, the comely limbs, and royal bones now are — mere graves. Crying out and threatening, the graves speak:
"The first and the last, the lofty and the lowliest, are taken in here." Man is a slight thing, man is a brief thing, man is a non-being; man is gravel and earthen clay, storing earthly things in his mind. Man is a little flower and an animated little statue. The breath quickens, cherishes, fills, drives, and moves him — for a short while. As soon as the breath deserts these bones the man perishes, and is filthy flesh; he is flesh more loathsome than any or all flesh; dead, our flesh is more vile, sick, more loosened than other flesh, and thus no corpses are laid away. Quickly it teems with worms, and (it is plain enough) the diseased thing splits open, and soon through harsh things, through scourges, through every savage thing it falls apart. That it quickly grows sickly, that it quickly grows foul, I pass over; that it quickly turns putrid, that it quickly wastes away, I forbear to say.
Caesus iter secus, inde vir, hinc pecus efflat uterque; Eius an istius est timor amplius? Eius, aperte. Non tibi fit metus exanimum pecus aequore prati; Amplius effera sunt tibi funera fratris humati. 850 Ossa revisere vel prope pergere nocte timebis, Cum minime secus exanimum pecus ire pavebis. Nostra cadavera nostraque funera foetidiora, Esse relinquitur esseque noscitur, horridiora.
Add that it is more horrid, more bristling, more fierce in death, more foully it reeks, more grievously the sick thing aches — and at once it is pus. Yours is no dread of the death or corpse of a beast; rather the terror assails you, or the fever rushes in, from a fellow human. Smitten beside the road, here a man, there a beast — each breathes out its last; is the fear of the one greater, or of the other? Of the man, plainly. A lifeless beast on the level of the meadow brings you no dread; far more frightful to you is the funeral of a buried brother. You will fear by night to look again upon the bones, or to go near them, when you would in no wise be afraid to walk past a lifeless beast. Our corpses and our funerals, it is left to be — and it is known to be — fouler and more horrid. Man is a light breath and a brief vapor; for a short while he appears; he appears and shines forth; at once he hides away, becomes grass, withers.
1:79
Weeping, man is born, and is quickly taken away; he breathes out his last and is buried. He stands a brief while, soon he falls; now he is, tomorrow he is gone; here he stands but briefly. A most fleeting whirlwind and a most brief breath is man. He himself is begotten amid toils, he himself amid sorrows. Here he lifts his head, flashes out, perishes; he is like a bubble; no bubble passes away more swiftly, no breeze more fleetingly. He is earthen flesh and fleshly earth, smoke, a shadow, a lump of corruption, a wave of the abyss — nay, the abyss itself. While the breath from heaven flows into him, he is a rose, he blossoms; when the vapor has departed, at once he collapses, is dung, lies horrid. Here man is begotten of corruption, born of woman; lately a man has been sown, given over to tears, here to weep for himself. He wails at the breast, lives amid hardships; death calls, and one departs.
1:80
Qui modo floruit illico corruit et sepelitur. 870 Illico labitur, illico tollitur, illico transit. Transit, abit, ruit; hic modicum fuit, hic breve mansit. Huc cito prodiit, hinc cito transiit, et quasi nunquam Exstiterit, perit; hic tribulos serit, hic saliuncam. Hic tribulos petit, hic tribulos metit, hic tribulatur. Laetitiae favet et flet, amat, pavet, inde gravatur. Donec homo viget, affluit, indiget, ut rota currit; Dat, rapit, it, fremit, opprimitur, premit, uritur, urit. Gaudet honoribus inque laboribus his requiescit. 880 Crux sibi plurima qui petit infima summa petendo. Ergo tumultuat, obstrepit, aestuat, haec satagendo.
He who but now flourished at once falls and is buried. At once he slips away, at once he is taken off, at once he passes by. He passes, departs, rushes down; here he was a little while, here he abode briefly. Hither he quickly came forth, hence he quickly passed on, and as though he had never existed, he perishes; here he sows thistles, here wild nard. Here he seeks thistles, here he reaps thistles, here he is afflicted. He favors gladness, and weeps, loves, dreads — and thereby is weighed down. So long as man thrives, he abounds, he is in want, he runs like a wheel; he gives, he snatches, he goes, he rages, he is oppressed, he oppresses, he is burned, he burns. He burns and is burned, he chokes and is choked; he grows worse toward evil. He delights in honors, and in his toils he rests in these. A heavy cross is his who seeks the lowest by seeking the highest. Therefore he is in tumult, he clamors, he seethes, while busying himself with these things.
Dives eget, tremit, altus ovans gemit, affluus aret. Denique mortibus undique pluribus excruciatum Urna furens capit, opprimit et rapit, O grave fatum! Laude superstite, nomine divite, dives habetur; Urna putredine, patria nomine tota repletur. Fama fit, est sonus; hic probus, hic bonus, hic fuit ille Clarus origine, fortis imagine, plenus Achille. 890 Fama virum dabat ipsaque mox labat aret et ipsa, Ad breve florida, post breve marcida, scissa, remissa. Mox ubi transiit, hic homo desiit esse, vocari. Haud anima calet, haud animal valet ergo probari. Truncus iners iacet, ille modo tacet; ante tonabat.
As a wheel is turned, as a rose is seen — and as though he might endure. The rich man is in want, he trembles; the lofty, exulting, groans; the abounding withers. At last, racked on every side by many deaths, the raging urn seizes him, crushes and snatches him away — O grievous fate! With his praise surviving him, with his name rich, the rich man is held in honor; the urn is wholly filled with rot, the homeland with his name. He becomes a rumor, he is a sound; "this man was upright, this man good, this was that famous one of noble origin, mighty in his image, full of Achilles." His fame proclaimed the man, and soon that very fame totters, withers — itself too — blooming for a brief while, after a brief while withered, rent, undone. Soon when he has passed away, here this man has ceased to be, or to be named. No longer does the soul keep warm, no longer is the living being able to be proven so. The lifeless trunk lies there; now he is silent — before he used to thunder.
1:82
Fex iacet horrida, qui rosa florida culmine stabat. Vita volubilis, immo volatilis est quasi punctum, Quod geometrica dat tibi fabrica, quam cito sumptum! Mors via maxima, mors patet ultima linea rerum, Quo pede testea calcat et aurea; nil sibi serum. 900 Imminet omnibus, hinc famulantibus, inde tyrannis. Irruit ocius, unica totius est via carnis. Socrate doctior, Hercule fortior, a triduana Febre resolvitur, indeque noscitur omnia vana. Vanaque vivere vanaque currere, sole sub isto. Omnia perspice, denique codice scito magistro. Quid tibi roboris?
He lies horrid dregs, who once stood like a flowering rose upon the summit. Rolling, nay flitting life is like a point such as the geometer's craft gives you — how swiftly taken away! Death is the greatest road, death lies open as the final line of all things, where alike the foot of earthenware and of gold treads; nothing comes too late for it. It hangs over all, here over those who serve, there over tyrants. It rushes in swiftly; it is the one road of all flesh. He who is wiser than Socrates, stronger than Hercules, is undone by a three-day fever — and thence it is known that all things are vain. Vain it is to live and vain to run, beneath this sun. Look through all things; in short, know that the master-book has told you. Behold, with eyes wide open to evils, blind to good things, the little fire of fever is for you a deathly thing — whence then are you swollen with pride? What strength have you?
1:83
illius Hectoris, illius ossa, Quae minus eminet, unica continet arctaque fossa. 910 Quid tibi grammatis? arida Socratis ossa tenentur. Vox animae Plato, iusticiae Cato, pulvis habentur. Fex caro lactea, redditur aurea caesaries fex.
The bones of that famous Hector, which now stand out so little, a single narrow pit contains. What avails you grammar? The dry bones of Socrates are held fast. Plato, the voice of the soul, Cato of justice, are reckoned dust. What avails you eloquence? That tongue of Demosthenes and of Cicero has utterly withered; the breath of art and of utterance has passed away. What avails you blood or lineage? The Fabii's lofty stock too has fallen, and their throng, dead, has melted away. Beauty exalted you, Absalom; a twofold vengeance carried you off. The milk-white flesh is now dregs; the golden locks are rendered dregs. What heights are yours? what names are yours? what praise is yours? Your heights, your names, and your former praise too — that they have fallen, you hear. What glory is yours, what grace is yours, what gift is yours? You have neither the glory nor the grace that Solomon had.
1:84
Est tibi regia magnificentia; prole Philippi Non eris altior at meritis minor hoc quoque scribi. Huic pudor, ocia, sessio regia, colla fuere, Ludere, proelia, cunctaque moenia sponte patere. Vicerat omnia; vincitur obvia fata secutus. Post hominem cinis est, quasi turbinis aura solutus. 930 Flos erat, est fimus, ille potissimus illeque fortis; Vix modo sportula parva vel urnula quo prius orbis. Est ubi gloria nunc Babylonia, nunc ubi dirus Nabuchodonosor et Darii vigor illeque Cyrus? Qualiter orbita viribus incita praeterierunt. Fama relinquitur illaque figitur; hi putruerunt.
Yours is royal magnificence; yet you will be no higher than the offspring of Philip, and in deserts inferior — let this too be written. To him belonged modesty, leisure, the royal throne, lordly bearing, sport, battles, and all the city-walls lying open at his will. He saw the farthest and uttermost bounds of the world, a man destined to be born to rule; he was made lord over peoples, cities, and rulers. He had conquered all things; yet he is conquered, having followed the fates that met him. After being a man, he is ash, as it were the breeze of a whirlwind dissolved. He was a flower, he is now dung — that most mighty one, that strong one; now scarce a little basket or a small urn holds him for whom before the whole world scarce sufficed. Where is now the Babylonian glory, where now dread Nebuchadnezzar, and the might of Darius, and that Cyrus? In what manner have they, swept on by their powers, passed away. Their fame is left behind and is fixed fast; but they themselves have rotted.
1:85
Nunc ubi curia pompaque Iulia? Caesar, obisti. Diva Philippica vox ubi coelica nunc Ciceronis? Pax ubi civibus atque rebellibus ira Catonis?
Where now is the court and the Julian pomp? Caesar, you are perished. You yourself were fiercer than the most truculent, more powerful than the world. That you might subdue the world's outermost parts with blood and the very stars with glory, your arms were stirred to raging, and battles and might. With the old man your son-in-law you joined arms — and not well; nor would you suffer to be his father-in-law, or a faithful comrade to him. You who are now but ash were once as great a man as the world. By force the compass of city and world was made subject to you. Behold, you are dissolved into a heap of dust, an urn of cinders; Caesar, you are both naked and well-nigh nothing — O that fierce one! Where now is Marius, and Fabricius who knew not gold? Where is the noble death and the memorable deed of Paulus? Where now is the divine, the Philippic, the heaven-born voice of Cicero? Where the peace of Cato for citizens and his wrath against rebels?
1:86
950 Nunc ubi Regulus aut ubi Romulus aut ubi Remus? Stat Roma pristina nomine, nomina nuda tenemus.
Where now is Regulus, or where Romulus, or where Remus? Rome of old stands in name; the bare names we hold. How swiftly fleeting and rolling is the orbit of the sphere; mighty hearts, strong bodies have passed away. Both briefly flourished and quickly fell the wave of those of old; their glory has ended, all their ground has passed away. We too are taken off, and we set out toward what they did too. We go to the depths, we lose the heavens, slack of mind. Death calls; we shall go, and we shall not retain the world's honors. Death hangs over all living things; we shall all go. We shall go, we shall go, and we shall return. To what? To the depths. Bodies that seek the depths are confessing themselves to be mire; free is the path of the mind to the heavens, of the flesh to the depths. This well receives, that ill despises, each at its own first beginnings.
1:87
Stat caro, mens gemit, Eva virum premit, inde reatus; Mens levat et lavat, at caro cor gravat, inquinat actus. Dulcia iurgia dum feret obvia cornua luna; Haec aget illaque desinet, utraque facta quod una. Cur caro carnea terraque terrea ferre laboras? Carnea, terrea, temporis alea versat in horas. 970 Tempus et omnia temporis inscia stare rotantur; Singula currere, nulla recurrere fluxa probantur. Corporis optima cerne simillima currere vento; Currere singula, currere saecula caeca memento.
The flesh stands fast, the mind groans; Eve presses down the man, and thence comes guilt; the mind lifts up and cleanses, but the flesh weighs down the heart and defiles its acts. While the moon bears its sweet quarrels and the horns that meet — this one waxes and that one wanes, both made as it were one. Why, fleshly flesh and earthen earth, do you labor to bear it? Fleshly, earthen thing, the dice-throw of time turns you about by the hours. Time and all things ignorant of time are whirled round so as to stand still; each thing is proved to run on, none of these fleeting things to run back. Behold how the best things of the body run like the wind; remember that single things run, that blind ages run on. The world is dissoluble, nay rolling, like a globe; all its things are crashing down through pestilence, wasted with diseases. Its light has shone; behold, its loveliness has utterly withered; its light has blossomed and quickly fallen; now it is mire.
1:88
Quomodo flumina cerne volumina currere rerum.
Behold how, like rivers, the rolling masses of things run on. The world's honor crashes down, and flees, and flows away, as the world of days rolls by. As a wheel is turned, and thereby is figured as a wheel the world, since it is indeed rolling and changeable and tottering toward ruin. Its supposed estate is void; its standing is an unstable standing. It goes and returns like the sea; in short, now it is in evil case, tomorrow worse there. Earthly glory, how like gravel it stands, undermined; like gravel by the stream, glory is borne away, driven by the whirlwind. All things are flowing, none abiding, that are good in the world. Within, the reed laughs at outward honors. Earthly glory, glassy glory, plainly glassy — at once its emptiness is taken away and dissolved. If I judge rightly, there comes a change with each of the days; and rightly I judge: there comes a change, there comes the flight of all things.
1:89
Mundus et omnia quomodo somnia vana recedunt, Signaque plurima tempora proxima iudicis edunt. Sidera flammea lunaque ferrea visa refertur, Sol sine lumine, terra voragine subruta fertur. Terra locis tremit, Eumenidum fremit umbra proterva; Bellica currere fertur in aere visa caterva. Agmina mortua currere conflua visa feruntur. Signa gravissima monstraque plurima conspiciuntur. Ah!
How, like dreams, the world and all things vainly withdraw; and very many signs proclaim that the times of the Judge are near. Stars are reported seen of flame, and the moon of iron; the sun is borne without light, the earth undermined by a chasm. The earth trembles in places; the impudent shade of the Furies roars; a warlike troop is reported seen running through the air. Dead hosts are reported seen running, flocking together. The gravest signs and very many portents are beheld. Grace crashes down, order grows cold, iniquity surges; each man is bent on guile; to be honest is shameful, to be chaste. Justice is crushed by the cross, flock by flock, leader by leader, and king by him who rules, host upon host, summit upon summit, nation too upon nation. All slippery things are now made public, nothing is hidden; inborn or furious infamies are cultivated. Ah!
1:90
petulantia militat ebria nocte dieque. Vox sacra displicet; illicitum licet et libet aeque. Qui fore vult bonus est miser, est onus, est onerosus; Qui mala postulat ille deambulat imperiosus. 1010 Iustitiae via nulla manet quia virgo recessit, Cumque sororibus introeuntibus aethera cessit. Ius ruit, officit; ars mala proficit, ars mala prodest. Fraus stat, amor iacet, ordo flet, ars placet, et gula frons est: Haec praeeuntia certaque nuntia credite finis. Finis enim venit, orbis honor perit hoste, ruinis, Seditionibus, illuvionibus, igne, procellis, Lite, libidine, fraude, gravedine, sanguine, bellis. Surgite, surgite spemque resumite, spe tremebundi;
Drunken wantonness wages war by night and by day. The sacred voice displeases; the unlawful is alike allowed and pleasing. He who wishes to be good is wretched, is a burden, is irksome; he who demands evil things walks about imperious. No way of justice remains, for the Virgin has withdrawn, and with her sisters entering in, has yielded the heavens. Right crashes down, is hindered; evil craft prospers, evil craft profits. Fraud stands fast, love lies low, order weeps, craft pleases, and gluttony is brazen-faced: believe these to be the going-before and sure heralds of the end. For the end comes; the world's honor perishes by the foe, by ruins, by seditions, by floods, by fire, by tempests, by strife, by lust, by fraud, by pestilence, by bloodshed, by wars. Rise up, rise up, and take up hope again, trembling in hope;
醉酒的放縱晝夜爭戰。神聖的聲音令人厭惡;不法之事既被容許又使人喜悅。願意行善的人成了可憐的、成了重擔、成了討厭的;索求惡事的人卻趾高氣揚地走來走去。沒有公義的道路存留,因為那童女已退去,與她的姊妹們一同進入,讓出了諸天。公理崩塌、受阻;邪惡的詭計亨通,邪惡的詭計得利。欺詐站立堅固,愛臥於低處,秩序哀哭,詭計討喜,貪食厚顏無恥:要信這些乃是末了的先兆與確實的使者。因為末了將到;世界的尊榮藉著仇敵、藉著廢墟、藉著叛亂、藉著洪水、藉著火、藉著風暴、藉著爭鬥、藉著情慾、藉著欺詐、藉著瘟疫、藉著流血、藉著戰爭而滅亡。起來,起來,重新拾起盼望,在盼望中戰兢;
1:91
Cernite currere regna, labascere culmina mundi. 1020 Ultima tempora, ni sacra littera fallit, aguntur. Dicta prophetica verbaque coelica perficiuntur. Fertur ut alea gloria carnea, plena favillae. Ille minaciter imminet arbiter, arbiter ille. Censor adest Deus, evigilet reus, est prope Christus. Quid modo detinet? en ferus imminet Antichristus. Stirps venit impia, stirps mala, bestia perditionis. Quo duce sidera coget in infera cauda Draconis. Iam tuba septima, plaga novissima iam properatur.
Behold the kingdoms running their course, the world's summits tottering. The last times, unless holy Scripture deceives, are being enacted. The prophetic sayings and the heavenly words are being fulfilled. Fleshly glory, full of cinders, is borne along like the dice. Threateningly that Judge hangs over us, that Judge. God the Censor is at hand; let the guilty awake; Christ is near. What now holds him back? Lo, fierce Antichrist hangs over us. The impious stock comes, the evil stock, the beast of perdition. Under whose leadership the Dragon's tail shall drive the stars down into the depths. The impious one hangs over us; the son of impiety is near; he hangs, he hangs over us, and gains the headship over those laid low beneath him. Under his rule it shall be multiplied and shall reign — death, tribulation, and suffering so great as never before. Now the seventh trumpet, the very last plague, is now being hastened.
1:92
Ecce recessio quam tua lectio, Paule, profatur; Regna labascere, retro recedere Roma videtur, Nec thronus ipsius aut status ut prius altus habetur. Actio lubrica fit modo publica, de medio fit. Roma, prior tua gloria mortua, Rex tibi defit. His praeeuntibus, immo sequentibus ordine signis, Imminet impius ille, vel illius horror et ignis. 1040 Suntque patentia signa, minantia, signa furoris, Prorsus ut ultima iam fore proxima tempora noris. Flammivomus, niger, hispidus, aliger est draco visus Nuper in aere — Nil ego dicere nunc paro risus — Claruit omnibus hic equitantibus atque colonis. Fugit, inhorruit, et fuga terruit illa draconis.
Behold the falling-away which your reading, Paul, foretells; the kingdoms are seen to totter, Rome to fall back behind, nor is its throne or estate held lofty as before. The slippery deed now is made public, becomes a thing of the open. Rome, your former glory is dead, your King is lacking to you. With these signs going before — nay, following in order — that impious one hangs over us, or his horror and his fire. And there are open, threatening signs, signs of fury, so that you may know for certain that the last times are now near. A flame-vomiting, black, bristling, winged dragon was seen of late in the air — nothing of jest do I now intend to say — it appeared to all the horsemen and the husbandmen. It fled, it shuddered, and the flight of that dragon terrified them.
1:93
Pestis et horrida transiit oppida transque volavit; Et loca plurima, fert ita maxima fama, meavit. In geminum caput egrediens apud Anglica rura, Femina prodiit ipsaque finiit in duo crura. 1050 Crura quidem duo, sed sibi bis duo brachia stabant. Hanc duo pectora, quatuor ubera mirificabant. Vos volo credere me rata dicere, scribere verum. Par erat actio, par via, sessio, par mulierum. Post breve denique pars ruit utraque morte soluta, Utraque pars ruit, hanc obitu fuit illa secuta.
A horrid plague passed through the towns and flew across them; and through very many places — so the greatest report bears it — it travelled. Coming forth into a twofold head among the English countryside, a woman came forth and ended in two legs. Two legs indeed, but twice two arms stood upon her. Two breasts, four udders made this creature monstrous. I would have you believe that I speak the truth determined, that I write what is real. Her movement was a pair, her path a pair, her sitting, a pair of women. Of these women — nay sisters, O wonder! — the one passed away, and the other, mournful, survived. After a brief while at last each part fell, loosed by death; each part fell, the one followed the other in dying.
1:94
Vir magus actibus in regionibus ivit Iberis, (Quae noto versibus, haec ego testibus assero veris) 1060 Is sine semine, simplice virgine se fore natum; (Proh furor!) edidit, et sibi credidit area fratrum. Gens temeraria, dum licet, impia facta fleamus. Ille minaciter advenit arbiter — expaveamus. 1070 Nemo capescere ius, mala plangere nemo relinquat; Gaudia flentibus, irreverentibus ira propinquat.
A man, a magician in his deeds, went into the Iberian regions, (the things I make known in verses, these I assert with true witnesses); he, of no seed, declared himself to have been born of a simple virgin — O madness! — and a throng of brethren believed him. To the uttermost the most evil viper said that he was the Christ; this all but proclaims, or points to, the presence of Antichrist. No lesser in his arts is one in the regions of the East, known and brought forth, and himself ruined in the order of his mind. And this impious one said that he was the great Elijah; hence know more surely that the last times are near. Rash, impious nation, while it is permitted, let us bewail our impious deeds. That Judge comes threateningly — let us be terrified. Let no one cease to lay hold of right, no one to lament evils; joys draw near to those who weep, wrath to the irreverent.
1:95
Iam tuba septima, plaga novissima, lux pia, dira, Intonat, ingruit, emicat, irruit et venit ira. Gens male conscia, lubrica gaudia flendo tegamus; Gens male conscia, quae fugientia sunt, fugiamus. Stare refugimus, ad mala fluximus; ad bona stemus. Hora novissima, tempora pessima sunt — vigilemus!
Now the seventh trumpet, the very last plague, the light at once holy and dread, thunders out, presses on, flashes forth, rushes in — and the wrath comes. Nation guilty of evil, let us with weeping cover over our slippery joys; nation guilty of evil, let us flee the things that are fleeing. We shrink from standing, we have flowed away to evils; let us stand for good things. The last hour, the worst of times, are here — let us keep watch!
