1:1
1. In principio Primum principium, a quo cunctae illuminationes descendunt tanquam a Patre luminum , a quo est omne datum optimum et omne donum perfectum , Patrem scilicet aeternum, invoco per Filium eius, Dominum nostrum Iesum Christum, ut intercessione sanctissimae Virginis Mariae, genitricis eiusdem Dei et Domini nostri Iesu Christi, et beati Francisci, ducis et patris nostri, det illuminatos oculos mentis nostrae ad dirigendos pedes nostros in viam pacis illius, quae exuperat omnem sensum ; quam pacem evangelizavit et dedit Dominus noster Iesus Christus;
1. In the beginning I invoke the First Principle, from whom all illuminations descend as from the Father of lights, from whom is every best gift and every perfect gift—namely the eternal Father—through his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, that by the intercession of the most holy Virgin Mary, mother of the same God and our Lord Jesus Christ, and of blessed Francis, our leader and father, he may grant illumined eyes to our mind, to direct our feet into the way of that peace which surpasseth all understanding; which peace our Lord Jesus Christ proclaimed and gave;
1. 起初,我呼求那第一本源,眾光從祂下降,如同從眾光之父而來,各樣美善的恩賜和各樣全備的賞賜都是從祂而來——這就是永恆的父——我藉著祂的子,我們的主耶穌基督呼求,願祂因至聖童女馬利亞(就是這位神並我們的主耶穌基督的母親)以及有福的方濟各(我們的領袖與父親)的代求,賜我們心思被照明的眼睛,引導我們的腳走入那超乎人一切所能理解之平安的道路;這平安是我們的主耶穌基督所宣揚並所賜的;
1:2
of which preaching our father Francis was the repeater, in all his preaching announcing peace at the beginning and at the end, in every greeting wishing peace, in every contemplation sighing for ecstatic peace, as a citizen of that Jerusalem of which that man of peace—who was peaceable with them that hated peace—says: Pray for the things that are for the peace of Jerusalem. For he knew that the throne of Solomon was not save in peace, since it is written: In peace is his place made, and his dwelling in Sion. 2.
1:3
Cum igitur exemplo beatissimi patris Francisci hanc pacem anhelo spiritu quaererem, ego peccador, qui loco ipsius patris beatissimi post eius transitum septimus in generali fratrum ministerio per omnia indignus succedo; contigit ut nutu divino circa Beati ipsius transitum, anno trigesimo tertio (1259) ad montem Alvernae tanquam ad locum quietum amore quaerendi pacem spiritus declinarem, ibique existens, dum mente tractarem aliquas mentales ascensiones in Deum, inter alia occurrit illud miraculum, quod in praedicto loco contigit ipsi beato Francisco, de visione scilicet Seraph alati ad instar Crucifixi.
When therefore, after the example of the most blessed father Francis, I, a sinner, was seeking this peace with panting spirit—I who, in the place of that most blessed father himself, succeed as the seventh in the general ministry of the brethren after his passing, though in all things unworthy—it came to pass that by divine prompting, about the time of his passing, in the thirty-third year (1259), I withdrew to Mount Alverna as to a place of quiet, out of love for seeking peace of spirit; and being there, while in mind I was treating of certain mental ascents into God, among other things there occurred to me that miracle which befell blessed Francis himself in the aforesaid place, namely the vision of the winged Seraph in the likeness of the Crucified.
1:4
In cuius consideratione statim visum est mihi, quod visio illa praetenderet ipisus patris suspensionem in contemplando et viam, per quam pervenitur ad eam. 3. Nam per senas alas illas recte intelligi possunt sex illuminationum suspensiones, quibus anima quasi quibusdam gradibus vel itineribus disponitur, ut transeat ad pacem per exstaticos excessus sapientiae christianae. Via autem non est nisi per ardentissimum amorem Crucifixi, qui adeo Paulum ad tertium caelum raptum transformavit in Christum, ut diceret: Christo confixus sum cruci, iam non ego; vivit vero in me Christus ;
In the consideration of which it at once appeared to me that that vision portrayed the suspension of our father himself in contemplation, and the way by which one comes to it. 3. For by those six wings can rightly be understood the six suspensions of illuminations, by which the soul, as by certain steps or journeys, is disposed to pass over to peace through the ecstatic transports of Christian wisdom. But the way is none other than through the most ardent love of the Crucified, which so transformed Paul, caught up to the third heaven, into Christ, that he said: With Christ I am nailed to the cross; now not I, but Christ liveth in me;
我一思想這異象,立時就覺得,那異象乃是描繪我們這位父親在默觀中的被提升,以及人達到此境的途徑。3. 因為藉那六個翅膀,正可領會為六種被照明的提升;藉這六層,魂就如登階梯、行旅程一般,被預備好,要藉基督智慧那超然的出神而過渡到平安。然而這途徑無他,唯藉著對被釘者那至熱切的愛;這愛如此將被提到第三層天的保羅變化成基督,以致他說:我已經與基督同釘十字架;現在活著的不再是我,乃是基督在我裏面活著;
1:5
qui etiam adeo mentem Francisci absorbuit, quod mens in carne patuit, dum sacratissima passionis stigmata in corpore suo ante mortem per biennium deportavit. Effigies igitur sex alarum seraphicarum insinuat sex illuminationes scalares, quae a creaturis incipiunt et perducunt usque ad Deum, ad quem nemo intrat recte nisi per Crucifixum. Nam qui non intrat per ostium, sed ascendit aliunde, ille fur est et latro . Si quis vero per ostium introierit, ingredietur et egredietur et pascua inveniet . Propter quod dicit Ioannes in Apocalypsi: Beati qui lavant vestimenta sua in sanguine Agni, ut sit potestas eorum in ligno vitae, et per portas ingrediantur civitatem ;
which love also so absorbed the mind of Francis that his mind was made manifest in his flesh, while for two years before his death he bore the most sacred stigmata of the Passion in his body. The figure, therefore, of the six seraphic wings hints at six step-like illuminations, which begin from creatures and lead all the way up to God, to whom no one enters rightly save through the Crucified. For he that entereth not by the door, but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber. But if any man enter in by the door, he shall go in and out and shall find pastures. On account of which John says in the Apocalypse: Blessed are they that wash their garments in the blood of the Lamb, that their power may be in the tree of life, and that they may enter through the gates into the city;
這愛也如此吞沒了方濟各的心思,以致他的心思顯明在他的肉身上,因為他在離世前兩年,身上就帶著至聖的受難釘痕。所以這六個撒拉弗翅膀的形像,暗示六種如階梯般的照明,這些照明從受造之物起始,引領人一路上達於神;除非藉著被釘者,無人能正當地進到神面前。因為那不從門進去,倒從別處爬進去的,就是賊,就是強盜。人若從門進去,就必出入得草吃。為此約翰在啟示錄裏說:那些洗淨自己衣裳的有福了,可得權柄能到生命樹那裏,也能從門進城;
1:6
as if to say that one cannot enter the heavenly Jerusalem by contemplation unless one enter through the blood of the Lamb as through a gate. For no one is in any way disposed to the divine contemplations which lead to mental transports, unless, with Daniel, he be a man of desires. But desires are inflamed in us in two ways, namely by the cry of prayer, which makes one roar from the groaning of the heart, and by the brightness of speculation, by which the mind turns itself most directly and most intensely to the rays of light. 4.
1:7
Igitur ad gemitum orationis per Christum crucifixum, per cuius sanguinem purgamur a sordibus vitiorum, primum quidem lectorem invito, ne forte credat quod sibi sufficiat lectio sine unctione, speculatio sine devotione, investigatio sine admiratione,, circumspectio sine exsultatione, industria sine pietate, scientia sine caritate, intelligentia sine humilitate, studium, absque divina gratia, speculum absque sapientia divinitus inspirata.
Therefore, to the groaning of prayer through Christ crucified, by whose blood we are cleansed from the filth of vices, I first invite the reader, lest perchance he believe that reading suffices for him without unction, speculation without devotion, investigation without wonder, circumspection without exultation, industry without piety, knowledge without charity, understanding without humility, study without divine grace, the mirror without wisdom divinely inspired.
Therefore, having been prevented by divine grace, to the humble and the pious, the contrite and the devout, to those anointed with the oil of gladness and to lovers of divine wisdom inflamed with desire for it, who are willing to give themselves to magnifying, admiring, and even tasting God, I set forth the following speculations, intimating that the mirror set forth outwardly is little or nothing unless the mirror of our mind has been wiped clean and polished. Exercise thyself, therefore, O man of God, first at the remorse of a stinging conscience, before thou liftest thine eyes to the rays of wisdom shining back in its mirrors, lest perchance from the very speculation of the rays thou fall into a deeper pit of darkness. 5.
It has pleased me to divide the treatise into seven chapters, prefixing titles for the easier understanding of the things to be said. I ask, therefore, that the intent of the writer be weighed rather than the work, the sense of the words rather than the unpolished speech, the truth rather than the elegance, the exercise of affection rather than the erudition of the intellect. That this may be done, the progress of these speculations is not to be run through perfunctorily, but to be ruminated most slowly. 1. Blessed is the man whose help is from thee; he hath disposed ascents in his heart, in the vale of tears, in the place which he hath set. Since beatitude is nothing other than the enjoyment of the highest good; and the highest good is above us:
No one can be made blessed unless he ascend above his very self—not by a bodily ascent, but by an ascent of the heart. But we cannot be raised above ourselves except by a higher power lifting us up. For however the inner degrees be arranged, nothing comes to pass unless divine aid accompany it. And divine aid accompanies those who seek it from the heart, humbly and devoutly; and this is to sigh after Him in this valley of tears, which is done through fervent prayer. Prayer, therefore, is the mother and origin of all upward striving. And so Dionysius, in his book On Mystical Theology, wishing to instruct us toward mental ecstasies, sets prayer first. Let us therefore pray and say to the Lord our God:
1:11
Deduc me, Domine, in via tua, et ingrediar in veritate tua; laetetur cor meum, ut timeat nomen tuum. 2. In hac oratione orando illuminatur ad cognoscendum divinae ascensionis gradus. Cum rerum universitas sit scala ad ascendendum in Deum; et in rebus quaedam sint vestigium, quaedam imago, quaedam corporalia, quaedam spiritualia, quaedam temporalia, quaedam aeviterna, ac per hoc quaedam extra nos, quaedam intra nos: ad hoc, quod perveniamus ad primum principium considerandum, quod est spiritualissimum et aeternum et supra nos, oportet, nos transire per vestigium, quod est corporale et temporale et extra nos, et hoc est deduci in via Dei;
Lead me, O Lord, in Thy way, and I shall walk in Thy truth; let my heart rejoice, that it may fear Thy name. 2. By praying in this prayer, one is enlightened to know the degrees of the divine ascent. Since the whole universe of things is a ladder for ascending unto God; and since among things some are a vestige, some an image, some are corporeal, some spiritual, some temporal, some everlasting, and through this some are outside us, some within us: in order that we may come to consider the First Principle, which is most spiritual and eternal and above us, we must pass through the vestige, which is corporeal and temporal and outside us—and this is to be led in the way of God;
主啊,求祢引導我行祢的路,我就在祢的真理中行走;願我的心歡喜,得以敬畏祢的名。二、在這禱告中禱告,人便得著光照,認識神聖上升的諸階。因為萬物的全宇宙乃是上升到神的階梯;而在萬物之中,有些是足跡,有些是形像,有些是有形的,有些是屬靈的,有些是暫時的,有些是永恆的,並藉此有些在我們之外,有些在我們之內:為使我們能達於思想那至屬靈、永恆且在我們之上的第一本原,我們必須先經過那有形、暫時且在我們之外的足跡——這就是被引導行在神的路上;
1:12
oportet, nos intrare ad mentem nostram, quae est imago Dei aeviterna, spiritualis et intra nos, et hoc est ingredi in veritate Dei; oportet, nos transcendere ad aeternum, spiritualissimum, et supra nos aspiciendo ad primum principium, et hoc est laetari in Dei notitia et reverentia Maiestatis. 3. Haec est igitur via trium dierum in solitudine; haec est triplex illuminatio unius diei, et prima est sicut vespera, secunda sicut mane, tertia sicut meridies; haec respicit triplicem rerum existentiam, scilicet in materia, in intelligentia et in arte aeterna, secundum quam dictum est; fiat, fecit, et factum est ;
we must enter into our own mind, which is the everlasting image of God, spiritual and within us—and this is to walk in the truth of God; we must transcend unto the eternal, the most spiritual, and that which is above us, by gazing toward the First Principle—and this is to rejoice in the knowledge of God and in reverence of His Majesty. 3. This, then, is the way of three days in the wilderness; this is the threefold illumination of a single day, the first being as evening, the second as morning, the third as midday; this regards the threefold existence of things, namely in matter, in intelligence, and in the eternal Art, according to which it was said: 'Let it be made, He made, and it was made';
我們必須進入自己的心智,那是神永恆的形像,屬靈且在我們之內——這就是行在神的真理中;我們必須超越到永恆者、至屬靈者,以及那在我們之上者,仰望那第一本原——這就是在認識神並敬畏祂威嚴中歡喜。三、所以,這就是在曠野三天的路程;這就是一日之內三重的光照,第一如黃昏,第二如清晨,第三如正午;這對應於萬物三重的存在,即在物質中、在悟性中,以及在永恆的藝術中,正如所說的:『要有,祂造了,事就成了』;
1:13
this also regards the threefold substance in Christ, who is our ladder, namely the corporeal, the spiritual, and the divine. 4. According to this threefold progression our mind has three principal aspects. One is toward exterior corporeal things, according to which it is called animality or sensuality; another within itself and into itself, according to which it is called spirit; the third above itself, according to which it is called mind. From all these it ought to dispose itself to ascend unto God, so as to love Him with the whole mind, with the whole heart, and with the whole soul—in which consists the perfect observance of the Law and at the same time Christian wisdom. 5.
1:14
Quoniam autem quilibet praedictorum modorum geminatur, secundum quod contingit considerare Deum ut alpha et omega , seu in quantum contingit videre Deum in unoquoque praedictorum modorum ut per speculum et ut in speculo , seu quia una istarum considerationum habet commisceri alteri sibi coniunctae et habet considerari in sua puritate; hinc est, quod necesse est, hos tres gradus principales ascendere ad senarium, ut, sicut Deus sex diebus perfecit universum mundum et in septimo requievit; sic minor mundus sex gradibus illuminationum sibi succedentium ad quietem contemplationis ordinatissime perducatur. In cuius rei figura sex gradibus ascendebatur ad thronum Salomonis;
But since each of the aforesaid modes is doubled—according as it happens to consider God as Alpha and Omega, or inasmuch as it happens to see God in each of the aforesaid modes both as through a mirror and as in a mirror, or because one of these considerations may be mingled with the other joined to it, or may be considered in its own purity—hence it is necessary that these three principal degrees be ascended to a sixfold number; so that, just as God in six days perfected the whole world and rested on the seventh, so the lesser world may be led in most orderly fashion, by six degrees of illuminations following one upon another, to the rest of contemplation. As a figure of this, the throne of Solomon was ascended by six steps;
但既然上述每一種方式都是雙重的——因為人可以將神視為阿拉法與俄梅戛來思想祂,或因為人可在上述每一方式中既如藉著鏡子、又如在鏡子之中看見神,或因為這些思想中的一種可與其相連的另一種相混合、又可在其本身的純淨中被思想——因此,這三個主要的階必須上升至六之數;好叫正如神在六日中成全了全世界,並在第七日安息,照樣這較小的世界也藉著六層相繼的光照,被極有秩序地引到默觀的安息。作為此事的表徵,所羅門的寶座有六層台階可上;
1:15
the Seraphim which Isaiah saw had six wings each; after six days the Lord called Moses out of the midst of the cloud, and Christ after six days, as is said in Matthew, led the disciples up the mountain and was transfigured before them. 6. According, then, to the six degrees of ascent unto God, there are six degrees of the soul's powers by which we ascend from the lowest to the highest, from the exterior to the innermost, from the temporal we climb to the eternal—namely sense, imagination, reason, intellect, intelligence, and the apex of the mind or the spark of synderesis. These degrees we have planted in us by nature, deformed by sin, reformed by grace; to be purged by justice, exercised by knowledge, perfected by wisdom. 7.
For according to the first institution of nature, man was created capable of the rest of contemplation, and therefore God placed him in the paradise of delights. But turning himself away from the true light toward a changeable good, he was bent down by his own fault, and his whole race by original sin, which doubly infected human nature, namely the mind with ignorance and the flesh with concupiscence; so that man, blinded and bent down, sits in darkness and does not see the light of heaven, unless grace with justice come to his aid against concupiscence, and knowledge with wisdom against ignorance. All this is wrought through Jesus Christ, who is made unto us by God wisdom and justice and sanctification and redemption.
Since He is the power of God and the wisdom of God, and is the Word incarnate full of grace and truth, He wrought grace and truth: namely, He infused the grace of charity, which—since it is from a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned—rectifies the whole soul according to its threefold aspect aforesaid; and He taught the knowledge of truth according to the threefold mode of theology, namely the symbolic, the proper, and the mystical, so that through the symbolic we may rightly use sensible things, through the proper we may rightly use intelligible things, and through the mystical we may be caught up to supramental ecstasies. 8.
1:18
Qui igitur vult in Deum ascendere necesse est, ut vitata culpa deformante naturam, naturales potentias supradictas exerceat ad gratiam reformantem, et hoc per orationem; ad iustitiam purificantem et hoc in conversatione; ad scientiam illuminantem et hoc in meditatione; ad sapientiam perficientem et hoc in contemplatione. Sicut igitur ad sapientiam nemo venit nisi per gratiam, iustitiam et scientiam; sic ad contemplationem non venitur nisi per meditationem perspicuam, conversationem sanctam et orationem devotam. Sicut igitur gratia fundamentum est rectitudinis voluntatis et illustrationis perspicuae rationis;
Whoever, then, wishes to ascend unto God must—having shunned the fault that deforms nature—exercise the aforesaid natural powers: toward reforming grace, and this through prayer; toward purifying justice, and this in conduct; toward illuminating knowledge, and this in meditation; toward perfecting wisdom, and this in contemplation. Therefore, just as no one comes to wisdom except through grace, justice, and knowledge, so no one comes to contemplation except through clear meditation, holy conversation, and devout prayer. As, then, grace is the foundation of the rectitude of the will and of the clear illumination of reason;
所以,凡願意上升到神的人,必須——既已躲避了那毀壞本性的過犯——操練前述的本性能力:朝向那重塑的恩典,這藉著禱告;朝向那潔淨的公義,這在於行為;朝向那光照的知識,這在於默想;朝向那成全的智慧,這在於默觀。因此,正如沒有人能達到智慧,除非藉著恩典、公義和知識;照樣,沒有人能達到默觀,除非藉著清明的默想、聖潔的生活和虔誠的禱告。那麼,恩典既是意志正直與理性清明光照的根基;
1:19
so we must first pray, then live in holiness, thirdly attend to the spectacles of truth, and by attending ascend step by step until we come to the high mountain where the God of gods is seen in Zion. 9. Since, therefore, in Jacob's ladder it is first to ascend rather than to descend, let us place the first step of ascent at the bottom, setting this whole sensible world before us as a mirror through which we may pass over to God, the supreme Craftsman—that we may be true Hebrews passing over from Egypt to the land promised to the Fathers; that we may also be Christians passing with Christ out of this world to the Father; that we may also be lovers of Wisdom, who calls and says:
1:20
Transite ad me omnes, qui concupiscitis me, et a generationibus meis adimplemini. A magnitudine namque speciei et creaturae cognoscibiliter poterit Creator horum videri. 10. Contemplans considerat rerum existentiam actualem, credens rerum decursum habitualem, ratiocinans rerum praecellentiam potentialem. 11.
Come over to me, all you who desire me, and be filled with my fruits. For from the greatness of the beauty and of the creature, the Creator of these may be knowably seen. 10. Now there shines forth in created things the supreme power and wisdom and benevolence of the Creator, according as the sense of the flesh announces this in threefold manner to the inner sense. For the sense of the flesh serves the intellect either in rationally investigating, or in faithfully believing, or in intellectually contemplating. The one contemplating considers the actual existence of things; the one believing, the habitual course of things; the one reasoning, the potential pre-eminence of things. 11.
1:21
Primo modo aspectus contemplantis, res in se ipsis considerans, videt in eis pondus, numerum et mensuram; pondus quoad situm, ubi inclinantur, numerum, quo distinguuntur, et mensuram, qua limitantur. Ac per hoc videt in eis modum, speciem et ordinem, nec non substantiam, virtutem et operationem. Ex quibus consurgere potest sicut ex vestigio ad intelligendum potentiam, sapientiam et bonitatem Creatoris immensam. 12. Secundo modo aspectus fidelis, considerans hunc mundum attendit originem decursum et terminnum. Nam fide credimus, aptata esse saecula Verbo vitae ; fide credimus, trium legum tempora, scilicet naturae, Scripturae et gratiae sibi succedere et ordinatissime decurrisse;
In the first manner, the gaze of the one contemplating, considering things in themselves, sees in them weight, number, and measure: weight as to position, where they incline; number, by which they are distinguished; and measure, by which they are limited. And through this he sees in them mode, species, and order, and likewise substance, power, and operation. From these he can rise, as from a vestige, to understand the immense power, wisdom, and goodness of the Creator. 12. In the second manner, the gaze of the believer, considering this world, attends to its origin, course, and end. For by faith we believe that the ages were framed by the Word of life; by faith we believe that the times of the three laws—namely of nature, of Scripture, and of grace—succeeded one another and ran their course in most orderly fashion;
在第一種方式中,默觀者的目光思想萬物之本身,便在其中看見重量、數目和尺度:重量在於位置,即它們傾向何處;數目,藉此它們得以區別;尺度,藉此它們得以受限。並藉此他在其中看見樣式、形相和秩序,以及本質、能力和運作。從這些,他能如從足跡一般上升,去理解創造主無量的能力、智慧和良善。十二、在第二種方式中,信者的目光思想這世界,便留意其根源、進程與終結。因為我們憑信相信,諸世界是藉生命之道所造的;我們憑信相信,三律法的時代——即本性、聖經與恩典的時代——彼此相繼,並極有秩序地展開;
1:22
fide credimus, mundum per finale iudicium terminandum esse; in primo potentiam, in secundo providentiam, in tertio iustitiam summi principii advertentes. 13. Tertio modo aspectus ratiocinabiliter investigantis videt, quaedam tantum esse, quaedam autem esse et vivere, quaedam vero esse, vivere et discernere; et prima quidem esse minora, secunda media, tertia meliora.- Videt iterum, quaedam esse tantum corporalia, quaedam partim corporalia, partim spiritualia; ex quo advertit, aliqua esse mere spiritualia tanquam utriusque meliora et digniora. Videt nihilominus, quaedam esse mutabilia et incorruptibilia, ut caelestia;
by faith we believe that the world is to be ended by the final judgment: in the first noting the power, in the second the providence, in the third the justice of the Supreme Principle. 13. In the third manner, the gaze of the one rationally investigating sees that some things merely are; others are and live; and others are, live, and discern—and the first indeed are lesser, the second intermediate, the third better. He sees again that some things are merely corporeal, others partly corporeal and partly spiritual; from which he notes that some are purely spiritual, as the better and more worthy of both. He sees nonetheless that some things are mutable and incorruptible, as the heavenly bodies;
我們憑信相信,世界將藉著末後的審判而終結:在第一中留意至高本原的能力,在第二中留意其護理,在第三中留意其公義。十三、在第三種方式中,理性探究者的目光看出,有些事物僅僅存在;有些則存在並活著;有些則存在、活著並有辨識——頭一類確是較低的,第二類居中,第三類較佳。他又看出,有些事物僅是有形的,有些則部分有形、部分屬靈;由此他留意到,有些是純然屬靈的,作為兩者中較佳、較尊貴的。他同時看出,有些事物是可變卻不朽壞的,如天體;
1:23
from which he notes that some things are immutable and incorruptible, as the supercelestial things. Therefore from these visible things he rises to consider the power, wisdom, and goodness of God as existing, living, and intelligent, purely spiritual and incorruptible and unchangeable. 14. Now this consideration is enlarged according to the sevenfold condition of creatures, which is a sevenfold testimony of the divine power and goodness, if the origin and order of all things be considered. For the origin of things, according to creation, distinction, and adornment—as regards the works of the six days—proclaims the divine power producing all things from nothing, the wisdom lucidly distinguishing all things, and the goodness lavishly adorning all things.
1:24
Magnitudo autem rerum secundum molem longitudinis, latitudinis et profunditatis; secundum excellentiam virtutis longe, late et profunde se extendentis, sicut patet in diffusione lucis; secundum efficaciam operationis intimae, continuae et diffusae, sicut patet in operatione ignis, manifeste indicat immensitatem potentiae, sapientiae et bonitatis trini Dei qui in cunctis rebus per potentiam, praesentiam et essentiam incircumscriptus existit. Multitudo vero secundum diversitatem generalem, specialem et individualem in substantia, in forma seu figura et efficacia ultra omnem humanam aestimationem, manifeste trium praedictarum conditionum in Deo immensitatem insinuat et ostendit.
Now the magnitude of things, according to the mass of length, breadth, and depth; according to the excellence of a power extending itself far, wide, and deep, as is clear in the diffusion of light; according to the efficacy of an operation that is inmost, continuous, and diffused, as is clear in the operation of fire—manifestly indicates the immensity of the power, wisdom, and goodness of the triune God, who exists uncircumscribed in all things through power, presence, and essence. And the multitude of things, according to the general, special, and individual diversity in substance, in form or figure, and in efficacy, beyond all human estimation, manifestly intimates and shows the immensity of the three aforesaid conditions in God.
Now the beauty of things, according to the variety of lights, figures, and colors in bodies simple, mixed, and even complex—as in heavenly and mineral bodies, such as stones and metals, plants and animals—evidently proclaims the three aforesaid. And the fullness of things, according as matter is full of forms according to the seminal reasons, form is full of power according to active potency, and power is full of effects according to efficiency, manifestly declares the same thing.
1:26
Operatio multiplex, secundum quod est naturalis, secundum quod est artificialis, secundum quod est moralis, sua multiplicissima varietate ostendit immensitatem illius virtutis, artis et bonitatis, quae quidem est omnibus "causa essendi, ratio intelligendi et ordo vivendi". Ordo autem secundum rationem durationis et influentiae, scilicet per prius et posterius, superius et inferius, nobilius et ignobilius, in libro creaturae insinuat manifeste primi principii primitatem, sublimitatem et dignitatem quantum ad infinitatem potentiae; ordo vero divinarum legum, praeceptorum et iudiciorum in libro Scipturae immensitatem sapientiae;
The manifold operation—according as it is natural, according as it is artificial, according as it is moral—by its most manifold variety shows the immensity of that power, art, and goodness, which is indeed to all things 'the cause of being, the ground of understanding, and the order of living.' And the order, according to the principle of duration and of influence, namely by prior and posterior, higher and lower, nobler and ignobler, in the book of the creature manifestly intimates the primacy, sublimity, and dignity of the First Principle as regards the infinity of power; and the order of the divine laws, precepts, and judgments in the book of Scripture intimates the immensity of wisdom;
那多重的運作——照著它是自然的、人造的、道德的——藉其極其多樣的種類,顯出那能力、藝術與良善的無量,這無量對萬物確是『存在之因、悟解之理、生活之序』。而那秩序,照著存續與影響的原則,即藉著先與後、上與下、較尊與較卑,在受造之物這書卷中,明顯地暗示第一本原的首要、崇高與尊嚴,就能力之無限而言;而神聖律法、誡命與審判的秩序,在聖經這書卷中,暗示智慧的無量;
1:27
and the order of the divine Sacraments, benefits, and recompenses in the body of the Church intimates the immensity of goodness—so that this very order most evidently leads us by the hand to the First and Supreme, the most powerful, most wise, and most good. 15. Whoever, then, is not illumined by such great splendors of created things is blind; whoever does not awake at such great shouts is deaf; whoever does not praise God from all these effects is mute; whoever does not note the First Principle from such great signs is foolish.
1:28
Open therefore your eyes, apply your spiritual ears, unloose your lips, and apply your heart, that in all creatures you may see, hear, praise, love, and worship, magnify and honor your God—lest perchance the whole world rise up against you. For on this account the world shall fight against the senseless, and on the contrary it shall be a cause of glory to the sensible, who according to the Prophet can say: Thou hast delighted me, O Lord, in Thy doing, and in the works of Thy hands I shall rejoice. How magnified are Thy works, O Lord! Thou hast made all things in wisdom; the earth is filled with Thy possession. 1.
But since, in regard to the mirror of sensible things, it happens not only to contemplate God through them as through vestiges, but also in them, inasmuch as He is in them by essence, power, and presence—and to consider this is higher than the preceding—therefore a consideration of this kind holds the second place, as the second degree of contemplation, by which we ought to be led by the hand to contemplate God in all the creatures that enter into our mind through the bodily senses. 2. It is to be noted, then, that this world, which is called the macrocosm, enters into our soul, which is called the lesser world, through the gates of the five senses, according to the apprehension, delectation, and judgment of these sensible things. This is clear thus:
that in it some things are generating, some generated, some governing these and those. The generating are simple bodies, namely the heavenly bodies and the four elements. For from the elements, by the power of light reconciling the contrariety of the elements in compounds, whatsoever are generated and produced by the operation of natural power have their being generated and produced. The generated, indeed, are bodies composed of elements, such as minerals, vegetables, sensible things, and human bodies.
The things ruling these and those are spiritual substances, whether wholly conjoined, as are the souls of brutes; or conjoined separably, as are rational spirits; or conjoined separably, as are the heavenly spirits, which the philosophers call Intelligences and we call Angels. To these, according to the philosophers, it belongs to move the heavenly bodies, and through this is attributed to them the administration of the universe, in receiving from the First Cause, namely God, the influence of power, which they pour back according to the work of governance, which regards the natural subsistence of things.
1:32
Secundum autem theologos attribuitur eisdem regimen universi secundum imperium summi Dei quantum ad opera reparationis, secundum, quae dicuntur administratorii spiritus, missi propter eos qui hereditatem capiunt salutis. 3.
But according to the theologians the governance of the universe is attributed to these same spirits according to the command of the Most High God as regards the works of restoration, according to which they are called ministering spirits, sent forth for the sake of those who receive the inheritance of salvation. 3. Man, therefore, who is called the lesser world, has five senses as it were five gates, through which the knowledge of all things that are in the sensible world enters into his soul.
1:33
Nam per visum intrant corpora sublimia et luminosa et cetera colorata, per tactum vero corpora solida et terrestria, per tres vero sensus intermedios intrant intermedia, ut per gustum aquea, per auditum aÎrea, per odoratum vaporabilia, quae aliquid habent de natura humida, aliquid de aÎrea, aliquid de ignea seu calida, sicut patet in fumo ex aromatibus resoluto. Intrant igitur per has portas tam corpora simplicia quam etiam composita, ex his mixta. Quia vero sensu percipimus non solum haec sensibilia particularia, quae sunt lux, sonus, odor, sapor et quatuor primariae qualitates, quas apprehendit tactus; verum etiam sensibilia communia, quae sunt numerus, magnitudo, figura, quies et motus;
For through sight enter sublime and luminous bodies and other colored things; through touch, indeed, solid and earthy bodies; through the three intermediate senses enter intermediate things, as through taste watery things, through hearing airy things, through smell vaporous things, which have something of a moist nature, something of the airy, something of the fiery or hot, as is clear in smoke dissolved from aromatic substances. Through these gates, therefore, enter both simple bodies and also composite ones mixed from these. But since by sense we perceive not only these particular sensibles, which are light, sound, odor, savor, and the four primary qualities which touch apprehends, but also the common sensibles, which are number, magnitude, figure, rest, and motion;
因為藉著視覺進入崇高且發光的物體與其他有顏色之物;藉著觸覺,則是堅實與屬土的物體;藉著三種居間的感官,進入居間之物,如藉著味覺進入屬水之物,藉著聽覺進入屬氣之物,藉著嗅覺進入屬蒸氣之物——這些有些屬於潮濕的性質,有些屬於氣的,有些屬於火的或熱的,如從芳香之物分解出來的煙所顯明的。所以,藉著這些門,既進入簡單的物體,也進入由這些混合而成的複合物體。但既然我們藉感官不僅領受這些個別的可感之物,即光、聲、味、香,以及觸覺所領受的四種首要性質,也領受共通的可感之物,即數目、大小、形相、靜止與運動;
1:34
et "omne, quod movetur ab alio movetur", et quaedam a se ipsis moventur et quiescunt, ut sunt animalia: dum per hos quinque sensus motus corporum apprehendimus, manuducimur ad cognitionem motorum spiritualium tanquam per effectum cognitionem causarum. 4. Intrat igitur quantum ad tria rerum genera in animam humanam per apprehensionem totus iste sensibilis mundus. Haec autem sensibilia exteriora sunt quae primo ingrediuntur in animam per portas quinque sensuum; intrant, inquam, non per substantias, sed per similitudines suas primo generatas in medio et de medio in organo et de organo exteriori in interiori et de hoc in potentiam apprehensivam;
and 'everything that is moved is moved by another,' while certain things are moved and at rest of themselves, as are animals: while through these five senses we apprehend the motions of bodies, we are led by the hand to the knowledge of spiritual movers, as through an effect to the knowledge of causes. 4. There enters, therefore, into the human soul through apprehension, as regards three kinds of things, this whole sensible world. Now these exterior sensibles are what first enter into the soul through the gates of the five senses; they enter, I say, not through their substances, but through their likenesses, first generated in the medium, and from the medium into the organ, and from the exterior organ into the interior, and from this into the apprehensive power;
並且『凡被推動的,都是被別的所推動』,而某些事物則是憑自身被推動並靜止的,如動物:當我們藉這五官領受物體的運動時,我們便被手把手引到對屬靈推動者的認識,如從果效引到對諸因的認識。四、所以,就三類事物而言,這整個感官世界藉著領受進入人的靈魂。如今這些外在的可感之物,乃是首先藉五官之門進入靈魂的;我說,它們進入並非藉著其本質,而是藉著其相似的影像,這影像首先在媒介中生成,再從媒介進入器官,從外在器官進入內在器官,又從此進入領受的能力;
1:35
and thus the generation of the species in the medium, and from the medium in the organ, and the turning of the apprehensive power upon it, brings about the apprehension of all those things which the soul apprehends exteriorly. 5. Upon this apprehension, if it be of a fitting thing, there follows delectation. Now the sense is delighted in an object perceived through an abstracted likeness, either by reason of beauty, as in sight; or by reason of sweetness, as in smell and hearing; or by reason of wholesomeness, as in taste and touch—speaking by appropriation. But every delectation is by reason of proportionality.
But since the species holds the principle of form, power, and operation, according as it has respect to the principle from which it flows, to the medium through which it passes, and to the term into which it acts: therefore proportionality is attended to either in the likeness, according as it holds the principle of species or form, and so it is called beauty, because 'beauty is nothing other than numerical equality,' or 'a certain arrangement of parts together with sweetness of color.' Or proportionality is attended to inasmuch as it holds the principle of potency or power, and so it is called sweetness, when the agent power does not disproportionately exceed the recipient; for sense is saddened in extremes and delighted in means.
1:37
Aut attenditur, in quantum tenet rationem efficaciae et impressionis, quae tunc est proportionalis, quando agens imprimendo replet indigentiam patientis, et hoc est salvare et nutrire ipsum, quod maxime apparet in gustu et tactu, Et sic per oblectationem delectabilia exteriora secundum triplicem rationem delectandi per similitudinem intrat in animam. 6. Post hanc apprehensionem et oblectationem fit diiudicatio, qua non solum diiudicatur, utrum hoc sit album, vel nigrum, quia hoc pertinet ad sensum particularem; non solum, utrum sit salubre, vel nocivum, quia hoc pertinet ad sensum interiorem; verum etiam, quia diiudicatur et ratio redditur, quare hoc delectat;
Or it is attended to inasmuch as it holds the principle of efficacy and impression, which is then proportional when the agent by impressing fills the need of the patient—and this is to save and nourish it, which appears most of all in taste and touch. And thus, through delectation, the delightful exterior things enter into the soul through their likeness according to the threefold reason of delighting. 6. After this apprehension and delectation there comes judgment, by which it is judged not only whether this be white or black, since this pertains to the particular sense; not only whether it be wholesome or harmful, since this pertains to the interior sense; but also, since it is judged and a reason is rendered why this delights;
或相稱被留意,因它持守效力與印刻之理,這效力在施作者藉印刻滿足受作者之需要時,便是相稱的——這就是保全並滋養它,這在味覺與觸覺中最為顯明。如此,藉著悅樂,那令人喜悅的外在之物,照著悅樂的三重之理,藉其相似影像進入靈魂。六、在這領受與悅樂之後,便有判斷,藉此不僅判斷這是白的還是黑的,因為這屬於個別的感官;不僅判斷它是有益的還是有害的,因為這屬於內在的感官;而且,既然判斷並給出理由,說明何以這令人喜悅;
1:38
and in this act there is inquiry into the reason for the delectation which is perceived in the sense from the object. This is the case when the reason for the beautiful, the sweet, and the wholesome is sought: and it is found that this is the proportion of equality. Now the reason of equality is the same in great and small things, nor is it extended by dimensions, nor does it succeed or pass away with passing things, nor is it altered by motions. It abstracts, therefore, from place, time, and motion, and through this it is unchangeable, uncircumscribable, and wholly spiritual. Judgment, therefore, is the action which makes the sensible species, sensibly received through the senses, enter into the intellective power by purifying and abstracting it.
1:39
Et sic totus iste mundus introire habet in animam humanam per portas sensuum secundum tres operationes praedictas. 7. Haec autem omnia sunt vestigia, in quibus speculari possumus Deum nostrum. Nam cum species apprehensa sit similitudo in medio genita et deinde ipsi organo impressa et per illam impressionem in suum principium, scilicet in obiectum cognoscendum, ducat;
And thus this whole world has to enter into the human soul through the gates of the senses according to the three operations aforesaid. 7. Now all these are vestiges in which we can behold our God. For since the apprehended species is a likeness generated in the medium and then impressed upon the organ itself, and through that impression leads into its principle, namely into the object to be known;
如此,這整個世界必須照著前述三種運作,藉著感官之門進入人的靈魂。七、如今這一切都是足跡,我們能在其中觀看我們的神。因為那被領受的影像乃是在媒介中生成、又印刻在器官本身上的相似影像,並藉那印刻引向其本原,即引向那當被認識的對象;
1:40
it manifestly intimates that He who is the image of the invisible God and the splendor of glory and the figure of His substance, who is everywhere through His first generation—just as an object generates its likeness throughout the whole medium—through the grace of union is united, as the species to the bodily organ, to an individual of rational nature, so that through that union He might lead us back to the Father as to the fontal principle and object. So, then, all knowable things, having to generate their own species, manifestly proclaim that in them, as in mirrors, can be seen the eternal generation of the Word, the Image, and the Son eternally emanating from God the Father. 8.
According to this mode, the species delighting as beautiful, sweet, and wholesome intimates that in that First Species is the first beauty, sweetness, and wholesomeness, in which is the highest proportionality and equality to the One generating; in which is a power, not by a phantasm, but by the truth of apprehension, gliding in; in which is an impression that saves and suffices and expels every need of the one apprehending. If, then, 'delectation is the conjunction of the fitting with the fitting,' and the likeness of God alone holds the principle of the supremely beautiful, sweet, and wholesome, and is united according to truth and according to inwardness and according to a fullness that fills every capacity:
1:42
manifeste videri potest, quod in solo Deo est fontalis et vera delectatio, et quod ad ipsam ex omnibus delectationibus manuducimur requirendam. 9. Excellentiori autem modo et immediatiori diiudicatio ducit nos in aeternam veritatem certius speculandam. Si enim diiudicatio habet fieri per rationem abstrahentem a loco, tempore et mutabilitate ac per hoc a dimensione, successione et transmutatione, per rationem immutabilem et incircumscriptibilem et interminabilem; nihil autem est omnino immutabile, incircumscriptibile et interminabile, nisi quod est aeternum; omne autem quod est aeternum, est Deus, vel in Deo: si ergo omnia, quaecumque certius diiudicamus, per huiusmodi rationem diiudicamus;
it can manifestly be seen that in God alone is the fontal and true delectation, and that we are led by the hand from all delectations to seek after it. 9. But in a more excellent and more immediate manner, judgment leads us to behold more surely the eternal truth. For if judgment has to be made through reason abstracting from place, time, and mutability—and through this from dimension, succession, and transmutation—through a reason immutable and uncircumscribable and unterminable; and nothing is wholly immutable, uncircumscribable, and unterminable except what is eternal; and everything that is eternal is God, or in God: if, then, all things, whatsoever we judge more surely, we judge by a reason of this kind;
便可明顯看出,惟有在神裡面才有源頭的、真實的悅樂,並且我們從一切悅樂被手把手引導去尋求它。九、但藉著更卓越、更直接的方式,判斷引領我們更確切地觀看那永恆的真理。因為若判斷必須藉著一種理性來作成,這理性從地點、時間與可變性中抽離——並藉此從尺度、相繼與變化中抽離——藉著一種不變的、不可受限的、無終結的理性;而除了那永恆者之外,沒有什麼是全然不變、不可受限、無終結的;而凡永恆者,皆是神,或在神裡面:那麼,若凡我們更確切地判斷的一切,我們都是藉這一類的理性來判斷的;
1:43
it is clear that He Himself is the ground of all things, and the infallible rule, and the light of truth, in which all things shine forth infallibly, indelibly, indubitably, irrefragably, indistinguishably, unchangeably, uncoercibly, interminably, indivisibly, and intellectually. And therefore those laws, by which we judge with certainty concerning all sensible things coming into our consideration—since they are infallible and indubitable to the intellect of the one apprehending, indelible from the memory of the one recalling as ever-present, irrefragable and beyond judgment to the intellect of the one judging, because, as Augustine says, 'no one judges concerning them, but by them':
it is necessary that these laws be unchangeable and incorruptible as necessary, uncoercible as uncircumscribed, interminable as eternal, and through this indivisible as intellectual and incorporeal, not made but uncreated, eternally existing in the eternal Art, by which, through which, and according to which all beautiful things are formed; and therefore they cannot be judged with certainty except by that Art which not only was the form producing all things, but also conserving and distinguishing all things, as a being holding the form in all things and a rule directing them, and through which our mind judges all things which enter into it through the senses. 10.
1:45
Haec autem speculatio dilatatur secundum considerationem septem differentiarum numerorum, quibus quasi septem gradibus conscenditur in Deum, secundum quod ostendit Augustinus in libro De vera Religione et in sexto Musicae , ubi assignat differentias numerorum gradatim conscendentium ab his sensibilibus usque ad Opficem omnium, ut in omnibus videatur Deus. Dicit enim, numeros esse in corporibus et maxime in sonis et vocibus, et hos vocat sonantes; numeros ab his abstractos et in sensibus nostris receptos, et hos vocat occursores; numeros ab anima procedentes in corpus, sicut patet in gesticulationibus et saltationibus, et hos vocat progressores;
Now this contemplation is enlarged according to the consideration of the seven differences of numbers, by which, as by seven steps, one ascends unto God—as Augustine shows in the book On True Religion and in the sixth book of On Music, where he assigns the differences of numbers ascending step by step from these sensible things up to the Maker of all, so that in all things God may be seen. For he says that there are numbers in bodies and especially in sounds and voices, and these he calls sounding numbers; numbers abstracted from these and received in our senses, and these he calls occurring numbers; numbers proceeding from the soul into the body, as is clear in gesticulations and dances, and these he calls advancing numbers;
如今這默觀又按對數目七種差別的思想而擴展,藉這七種差別,如藉七階梯,人便上升到神——正如奧古斯丁在《論真宗教》一書及《論音樂》第六卷中所顯明的,他在那裡指出諸數一階一階地從這些可感之物上升到萬物之造作者,好叫神在萬物中被看見。因為他說,數存在於物體中,尤其在聲音與話語中,這些他稱為發聲之數;從這些抽離出來、被領受於我們感官中的數,他稱為相遇之數;從魂出發進入身體的數,如在手勢與舞蹈中所顯明的,他稱為前進之數;
1:46
numbers in the delectations of the senses arising from the turning of the attention upon the received species, and these he calls sensual numbers; numbers retained in the memory, and these he calls memorial numbers; and also numbers by which we judge concerning all these, and these he calls judicial numbers, which, as has been said, are necessarily above the mind as infallible and beyond judgment. From these, however, are impressed upon our minds the artificial numbers, which nevertheless Augustine does not enumerate among those degrees, because they are connected with the judicial; and from these flow the advancing numbers, from which are created the numerous forms of artificial things, so that from the highest, through the means, an ordered descent may be made to the lowest.
To these we likewise ascend step by step from the sounding numbers, through the mediation of the occurring, sensual, and memorial. Since, therefore, all things are beautiful and in a certain manner delightful, and beauty and delight are not without proportion, and proportion is primarily in numbers: it is necessary that all things be numerous; and through this 'number is the foremost exemplar in the mind of the Maker,' and in things the foremost vestige leading unto Wisdom.
Since this is most evident to all and nearest to God, it leads most nearly unto God, as it were through seven differences, and causes Him to be known in all corporeal and sensible things, while we apprehend things numerous, are delighted in numerous proportions, and judge irrefragably through the laws of numerous proportions. 11.
1:49
Ex his duobus gradibus primis, quibus manuducimur ad speculandum Deum in vestigiis quasi ad modum duarum alarum descendentium circa pedes, colligere possumus, quod omnes creaturae istius sensibilis mundi animum contemplantis et sapientis ducunt in Deum aeternum, pro eo quod illius primi principii potentissimi, sapientissimi et optimi, illius aeternae originis, lucis et plenitudinis, illius, inquam, artis efficientis, exemplantis et ordinantis sunt umbrae, resonantiae et picturae, sunt vestigia, simulacra et spectacula nobis ad contuendum Deum proposita et signa divinitus data;
From these two first degrees, by which we are led by the hand to behold God in His vestiges, as it were by way of two wings descending about the feet, we can gather that all the creatures of this sensible world lead the mind of the one contemplating and being wise unto the eternal God—because they are the shadows, echoes, and pictures of that most powerful, most wise, and most good First Principle, of that eternal origin, light, and fullness, of that, I say, efficient, exemplating, and ordering Art; they are vestiges, simulacra, and spectacles set before us for the beholding of God, and signs divinely given;
從這頭兩階——藉此我們被手把手引領在祂的足跡中觀看神,彷彿藉著兩隻在腳邊下垂的翅膀——我們能斷定:這感官世界的一切受造之物,都引領那默觀並有智慧之人的心智歸於永恆的神,因為它們是那至有能力、至有智慧、至善之第一本原的影子、回聲與圖畫,是那永恆之根源、之光、之豐滿的,是那(我說)施作的、作範本的、安排秩序之藝術的;它們是足跡、肖像與景象,擺在我們面前供我們觀看神,又是神聖所賜的記號;
1:50
These things, I say, are exemplars, or rather things exemplified, set before minds still untutored and tied to the senses, so that through sensible things, which they see, they may be carried over to intelligible things, which they do not see, as through signs to the things signified. 12. Now these creatures of this sensible world signify the invisible things of God: partly because God is the origin, exemplar and end of every creature, and every effect is a sign of its cause, the thing exemplified a sign of its exemplar, and the way a sign of the end to which it leads; partly by their own representation; partly by prophetic prefiguration; partly by angelic operation; partly by a superadded institution.
1:51
Omnis enim creatura ex natura est illius aeternae sapientiae quaedam effigies et similitudo, sed specialiter illa quae in libro Scripturae per spiritum prophetiae assumpta est ad spiritualium praefigurationem; specialius autem illae creaturae, in quarum effigie Deus angelico ministerio voluit apparere; specialissime vero ea quam voluit ad significandum instituere, quae tenet non solum rationem signi secundum nomen commune, verum etiam Sacramenti. 13. Ex quibus omnibus colligitur, quod invisibilia Dei a creatura mundi, per ea quae facta sunt, intellecta conpiciuntur;
For every creature is by its nature a certain image and likeness of that eternal Wisdom, but in a special way that which in the book of Scripture has, through the spirit of prophecy, been taken up as a prefiguration of spiritual things; more specially still those creatures in whose likeness God willed to appear by angelic ministry; and most especially that which He willed to institute for signifying, which holds not only the character of a sign according to the common name, but indeed that of a Sacrament. 13. From all of which it is gathered that the invisible things of God are clearly seen, being understood by the creature of the world through the things that are made;
因為每一受造之物按其本性都是那永恆智慧的某種肖像與相似;但尤其特別的,是那在聖經之書中藉先知之靈被取用來預表屬靈之事的;更特別的,是那些神願意藉天使的職事以其形像顯現的受造之物;而最特別的,乃是那神願意設立來作表記的,它不僅按通常名稱具有記號的意義,更具有聖事(聖禮)的意義。13. 由這一切便可推知:神不可見的事,自從造天地以來,藉著所造之物,就可以明明看見、得以曉悟;
1:52
ita ut qui nolunt ista advertere et Deum in his omnibus cognoscere, benedicere et amare inexcusabiles sint dum nolunt transferri de tenebris in admirabile lumen Dei. Deo autem gratias per Iesum Christum, Dominum nostrum , qui nos de tenebris transtulit in admirabile lumen suum , dum per haec lumina exterius data ad speculum mentis nostrae in quo relucent divina, disponimus ad reintrandum. 1. Quoniam autem duo gradus praedicti, ducendo nos in Deum per vestigia sua, per quae in cunctis creaturis relucet, manuduxerunt nos usque ad hoc, ut ad nos reintraremus, in mentem scilicet nostram, in qua divina relucet imago;
so that those who are unwilling to heed these things and to know, bless and love God in them all are without excuse, since they refuse to be carried over out of darkness into the marvellous light of God. But thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord, who has carried us over out of darkness into His marvellous light, while through these lights given outwardly we dispose ourselves to re-enter into the mirror of our mind, in which divine things shine. 1. But since the two aforesaid steps, by leading us into God through His vestiges, by which He shines forth in all creatures, have led us by the hand even to this, that we should re-enter into ourselves, namely into our mind, in which the divine image shines;
以致那些不願留意這些事、不願在這一切之中認識、稱頌、愛慕神的人,都無可推諉,因他們不願從黑暗被引渡入神奇妙的光中。然而,要藉著我們的主耶穌基督感謝神,祂已把我們從黑暗領入祂奇妙的光中;當我們藉這些向外賜下的光,預備自己重新進入我們心思的鏡子(其中有神聖之事閃耀)時。1. 然而,既然前述那兩個階段,藉著神在一切受造之物中閃耀的祂的蹤跡引領我們進入神,已牽著我們的手,使我們得以重新進入自己裡面,就是進入我們的心思,那裡有神聖的形像閃耀;
1:53
hence it is that now, in the third place, entering into ourselves and as it were leaving the outer court behind, we ought to strive to see God through a mirror in the holy place, that is, the forward part of the tabernacle; where, after the manner of a lampstand, the light of truth shines in the face of our mind, in which, namely, the image of the most blessed Trinity is reflected. Enter therefore into yourself and see, for your mind most fervently loves itself; nor could it love itself unless it knew itself; nor could it know itself unless it remembered itself, for we grasp nothing by understanding that is not present to our memory; and from this you may observe that your soul has a threefold power, not with the eye of flesh but with the eye of reason.
Consider, therefore, the operations and dispositions of these three powers, and you will be able to see God through yourself as through an image, which is to see through a mirror in an enigma. 2. Now the operation of memory is the retention and representation not only of things present, corporeal and temporal, but also of things successive, simple and everlasting. For memory retains past things by recollection, present things by reception, future things by foresight. It also retains simple things, such as the principles of continuous and discrete quantities, like the point, the instant and unity, without which it is impossible to remember or to think of those things which take these as their principles.
It nonetheless retains the principles and axioms of the sciences as everlasting and everlastingly, for it can never so forget them, while it uses reason, that, upon hearing them, it would not approve and assent to them—not as though perceiving them anew, but recognizing them as innate and familiar to itself; as is evident, were one to propose to someone: 'Of anything whatever, affirmation or negation' [is true]; or: 'Every whole is greater than its part', or any other axiom which cannot be contradicted by the inner reason. Therefore, from this first actual retention of all temporal things—past, present and future—it has the image of eternity, whose indivisible present extends itself to all times.
From the second [retention] it appears that the memory must be informed not only from without by phantasms, but also from above by receiving simple forms which cannot enter through the gates of the senses and the imaginings of sensible things. From the third it is had that it has present to itself an unchangeable light, in which it remembers unvarying truths. And thus through the operations of memory it appears that the soul itself is the image of God and a likeness so present to itself and having Him so present that it actually grasps Him, and by its power 'is capable of Him and can be a partaker' of Him. 3. Now the operation of the intellective power consists in the perception of the intellect's understanding of terms, propositions and inferences.
Now the intellect grasps the things signified by terms when it comprehends what each thing is by its definition. But a definition has to be made by means of higher [terms], and those have to be defined by yet higher ones, until one arrives at the supreme and most general, which, if unknown, make it impossible to understand the lower ones by definition. Therefore, unless it be known what being in itself is, the definition of any particular substance cannot be fully known. Nor can being in itself be known unless it be known together with its conditions, which are: one, true, good.
1:58
Ens autem, cum possit cogitari ut diminutum et completum, ut imperfectum et ut perfectum, ut ens in potentia et ut ens in actu, ut ens secundum quid et ut ens simpliciter, ut ens in parte et ut ens totaliter, ut ens transiens et ut ens manens, ut ens per aliud et ut ens per se, ut ens permixtum non-enti et ut ens purum, ut ens dependens et ut ens absolutum, ut ens posterius et ut ens prius, ut ens mutabile et ut ens immutabile, ut ens simplex et ut ens compositum, cum "privationes et defectus nullatenus possint cognosci nisi per positiones", non venit intellectus noster ut plene resolvens intellectum alicuius entium creatorum, nisi iuvetur ab intellectu entis purissimi, actualissimi, completissimi et absoluti;
Now being, since it can be thought of as diminished and as complete, as imperfect and as perfect, as being in potency and as being in act, as being in a certain respect and as being absolutely, as being in part and as being totally, as being passing and as being abiding, as being through another and as being through itself, as being mingled with non-being and as pure being, as being dependent and as being absolute, as being posterior and as being prior, as being changeable and as being unchangeable, as being simple and as being composite—since 'privations and defects can in no way be known except through positions'—our intellect does not come fully to resolve the understanding of any one of created beings unless it be aided by the understanding of being most pure, most actual, most complete and absolute;
然而「有」既可被思想為虧損的與完全的,為不完美的與完美的,為潛能之有與現實之有,為相對之有與絕對之有,為部分之有與全體之有,為過渡之有與常存之有,為藉他者之有與藉自體之有,為與非有相摻雜之有與純粹之有,為依存之有與絕對自立之有,為在後之有與在先之有,為可變之有與不可變之有,為單純之有與複合之有——既然「闕乏與缺欠絕不能被認識,除非藉著正面的存有」——我們的悟性便不能充分地辨明任何一個受造之有的理解,除非得著那至純、至現實、至完全且絕對之「有」的理解的幫助;
1:59
which is being absolutely and eternal, in which are the reasons of all things in their purity. But how would the intellect know that this is a defective and incomplete being, if it had no knowledge of being without any defect? And so with the other aforementioned conditions. Now the intellect is said truly to comprehend the understanding of propositions when it knows with certainty that they are true; and to know this is to know that it cannot be deceived in that comprehension. For it knows that that truth cannot be otherwise; it knows therefore that that truth is unchangeable.
But since our mind itself is changeable, it cannot see that truth so unchangeably shining forth except through some light radiating altogether unchangeably, which it is impossible to be a mutable creature. It knows, therefore, in that light which enlightens every man coming into this world, which is the true light and the Word in the beginning with God. Now our intellect truly perceives the understanding of an inference when it sees that the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises; which it sees not only in necessary terms, but also in contingent ones, as: if a man runs, a man is moved. And it perceives this necessary relation not only in beings, but also in non-beings.
For just as, when a man exists, it follows: if a man runs, a man is moved; so also when he does not exist. Therefore the necessity of an inference of this kind comes neither from the existence of the thing in matter, since that is contingent, nor from the existence of the thing in the soul, since then it would be a fiction if it were not in the thing: it comes therefore from the exemplarity in the eternal Art, according to which things have an aptitude and relation to one another according to the representation of that eternal Art. Therefore, as Augustine says in 'On True Religion', the light of everyone who truly reasons is kindled from that Truth and strives to attain to it.
From this it manifestly appears that our intellect is joined to that eternal Truth itself, since it can grasp nothing true with certainty except through that Truth teaching. You can therefore see by yourself the Truth which teaches you, if concupiscences and phantasms do not hinder you and do not interpose themselves like clouds between you and the ray of Truth. 4. Now the operation of the elective power is observed in counsel, judgment and desire. Counsel consists in inquiring which is better, this or that. But a thing is not called better except by an approach to the best; and the approach is according to greater assimilation; no one therefore knows whether this is better than that, unless he knows that it is more assimilated to the best.
But no one knows that something is more assimilated to another unless he knows that other; for I do not know that this man is like Peter unless I know or am acquainted with Peter: therefore on everyone who takes counsel there is necessarily impressed a notion of the highest good. Now a sure judgment about matters of counsel is by some law. But no one judges with certainty by a law unless he be certain that that law is right, and that he himself ought not to judge it; yet our mind judges about itself: since, then, it cannot judge about the law by which it judges, that law is higher than our mind, and by it the mind judges insofar as that law is impressed upon it. But nothing is higher than the human mind except He alone who made it:
therefore in judging, our deliberative power reaches as far as the divine laws, if it resolves with full resolution. Now desire is principally for that which most moves it. But what is most loved most moves it; and what is most loved is to be blessed; yet to be blessed is not had except through the best and the ultimate end: therefore human desire seeks nothing except either because it is the highest good, or because it is ordered toward it, or because it has some image of it. So great is the force of the highest good that nothing can be loved by a creature except through desire for it; and the creature is then deceived and errs when it accepts an image and a simulacrum for the truth.
1:65
Vide igitur, quomodo anima Deo est propinqua, et quomodo memoria in aeternitatem, intelligentia in veritatem, electiva potentia ducit in bonitatem summam secundum operationes suas. 5.
See therefore how the soul is near to God, and how, according to their operations, memory leads into eternity, intelligence into truth, and the elective power into the highest goodness. 5. Now according to the order, origin and relation of these powers it leads into the most blessed Trinity itself. For from memory arises intelligence as its offspring, since we understand then, when a likeness, which is in the memory, springs forth in the keen edge of the intellect, and this is nothing other than the word; from memory and intelligence is breathed forth love as the bond of both.
These three, namely the generating mind, the word and love, are in the soul as memory, intelligence and will, which are consubstantial, coequal and coeval, mutually circumincessing one another. If, therefore, God is a perfect Spirit, He has memory, intelligence and will, He has also the begotten Word and the breathed-forth Love, which are necessarily distinguished, since the one is produced from the other—not essentially, not accidentally, therefore personally.
1:67
Dum igitur mens se ipsam considerat, per se tanquam per speculum consurgit ad speculandam Trinitatem beatam Patris, Verbi et Amoris, trium personarum coaeternarum, coaequalium et consubstantialium, ita quod quilibet in quolibet est aliorum, unus tamen non est alius, sed ipsi tres sunt unus Deus. 6. Ad hanc speculationem quam habet anima de suo principio trino et uno per trinitatem suarum potentiarum, per quas est imago Dei, iuvatur per lumina scientiarum, quae ipsam perficiunt et informant et Trinitatem beatissimam tripliciter repraesentant. Nam omnis philosophia aut est naturalis, aut rationalis, aut moralis. Prima agit de causa essendi, et ideo ducit in potentiam Patris;
While, therefore, the mind considers itself, it rises through itself as through a mirror to behold the blessed Trinity of the Father, the Word and Love—three persons coeternal, coequal and consubstantial, in such a way that each is in each of the others, yet one is not the other, but these three are one God. 6. To this contemplation which the soul has of its principle, three and one, through the trinity of its powers by which it is the image of God, it is aided by the lights of the sciences, which perfect and inform it and represent the most blessed Trinity in a threefold way. For all philosophy is either natural, or rational, or moral. The first treats of the cause of being, and therefore leads into the power of the Father;
所以,當心思思想它自己時,它便藉著自己、如同藉著一面鏡子上升,去仰觀那至福的三一,就是父、道與愛——三個位格,是同永、同等、同質的,以致各位格都在其餘各位格之中,然而一位不是另一位,乃是這三者是一位神。6. 魂藉其官能的三一性(它因此成為神的形像)對其三而一的本原所作的這種觀想,得著諸學科之光的幫助,這些光使它得以完成、得以塑成,並以三重方式表現那至福的三一。因為一切哲學或是自然的,或是理性的,或是道德的。第一者論存有的原因,因此引入父的權能;
1:68
secunda de ratione intelligendi, et ideo ducit in sapientiam Verbi; tertia de ordine vivendi, et ideo ducit in bonitatem Spiritus Sancti. Rursus, prima dividitur in metaphysicam, mathematicam et physicam.
the second, of the reason of understanding, and therefore leads into the wisdom of the Word; the third, of the order of living, and therefore leads into the goodness of the Holy Spirit. Again, the first is divided into metaphysics, mathematics and physics. And the first is about the essences of things, the second about numbers and figures, the third about natures, powers and diffusive operations. And therefore the first leads into the first principle, the Father; the second into His image, the Son; the third into the gift of the Holy Spirit. The second is divided into grammar, which makes [men] able to express; logic, which makes them keen to argue; and rhetoric, which makes them apt to persuade or move. And this likewise intimates the mystery of the most blessed Trinity.
1:69
Tertia dividitur in monasticam, oeconomicam et politicam. Et ideo prima insinuat primi principii innascibilitatem, secunda Filii familiaritatem, tertia Spiritus sancti liberalitatem. 7.
The third [philosophy] is divided into the monastic, the economic and the political. And therefore the first intimates the unbegottenness of the first principle, the second the intimacy of the Son, the third the liberality of the Holy Spirit. 7. Now all these sciences have sure and infallible rules, as lights and rays descending from the eternal law into our mind. And therefore our mind, irradiated and suffused with such great splendors, unless it be blind, can be led by the hand through itself to contemplate that eternal Light. But the irradiation and consideration of this Light suspends the wise in admiration, and on the contrary leads the unwise, who do not believe in order that they may understand, into perturbation, so that there may be fulfilled that prophetic word:
1:70
Illuminans tu mirabiliter a montibus aeternis, turbati sunt omnes insipientes corde . 1. Sed quoniam non solum per nos transeundo, verum etiam in nobis contingit contemplari primum principium; et hoc maius est quam praecedens: ideo hic modus considerandi quartum obtinet contemplationis gradum. Mirum autem videtur, cum ostensum sit, quod Deus sit ita propinquus mentibus nostris, quod tam paucorum est in se ipsis primum principium speculari. Sed ratio est in promptu, quia mens humana, sollicitudinibus distracta, non intrat ad se per memoriam; phantasmatibus obnubilata, non redit ad se per intelligentiam;
'Thou enlightenest wonderfully from the everlasting mountains; all the foolish of heart were troubled.' 1. But since it falls to us to contemplate the first principle not only by passing through ourselves, but also within ourselves; and this is greater than the preceding: therefore this mode of considering obtains the fourth degree of contemplation. Now it seems wonderful, since it has been shown that God is so near to our minds, that so few are able to behold the first principle within themselves. But the reason is at hand, because the human mind, distracted by cares, does not enter into itself through memory; clouded over by phantasms, it does not return to itself through intelligence;
「祢從亙古的山上奇妙地施光照;凡心中愚昧的都驚惶了。」1. 然而,既然我們不僅可藉穿越自己、也可在自己裡面觀想那第一本原;而這比前者更為高超:所以這種省思的方式得著觀想的第四等級。如今這似乎令人驚奇:既已顯明神是如此親近我們的心思,何以能在自己裡面仰觀那第一本原的人卻如此之少。然而緣由就在眼前,因為人的心思被掛慮分散,便不藉記憶進入自己裡面;被幻像遮蔽,便不藉悟性回到自己;
1:71
enticed by concupiscences, it in no way returns to itself through the desire of inward sweetness and spiritual gladness. Therefore, lying wholly amid these sensible things, it cannot re-enter into itself as into the image of God. 2. And since, where anyone has fallen, he must needs lie there, unless someone come and add help that he may rise again; our soul could not be perfectly raised up from these sensible things to the contemplation of itself and of the eternal Truth within itself, unless Truth, having assumed human form in Christ, became for itself a ladder restoring the former ladder which had been broken in Adam.
Therefore, however much one be enlightened by the light of nature and of acquired knowledge, he cannot enter into himself, that within himself he may delight in the Lord, except by the mediation of Christ, who says: 'I am the door. By me if anyone enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and go out and find pastures.' Now we do not draw near to this door unless we believe in Him, hope and love. It is necessary, therefore, if we wish to re-enter to the enjoyment of Truth as into paradise, that we enter through faith, hope and charity in the Mediator of God and men, Jesus Christ, who is, as it were, the tree of life in the midst of paradise. 3.
The image of our mind must therefore be clothed over with the three theological virtues, by which the soul is purified, and thus the image is reformed and made conformable to the heavenly Jerusalem and a part of the Church militant, which, according to the Apostle, is the offspring of the heavenly Jerusalem. For he says: 'That Jerusalem which is above is free, which is our mother.' The soul, therefore, believing, hoping and loving Jesus Christ, who is the Word incarnate, uncreated and inspired, namely the way, the truth and the life; while by faith it believes in Christ as in the uncreated Word, which is the Word and splendor of the Father, recovers spiritual hearing and sight—hearing to receive the discourses of Christ, sight to consider the splendors of that Light.
Now while by hope it sighs to receive the inspired Word, through desire and affection it recovers spiritual smell. While by charity it embraces the incarnate Word, as receiving from Him delight and as passing over into Him through ecstatic love, it recovers taste and touch. These senses having been recovered, while it sees and hears its bridegroom, smells, tastes and embraces Him, it can sing, as the bride, the Song of Songs, which was composed for the exercise of contemplation according to this fourth degree, which no one grasps except him who receives it, because it consists more in affective experience than in rational consideration.
1:75
In hoc namque gradu, reparatis sensibus interioribus ad sentiendum summe pulcrum, audiendum summe harmonicum, odorandum summe odoriferum, degustandum summe suave, apprehendendum summe delectabile, disponitur anima ad mentales excessus, scilicet per devotionem, admirationem et exultationem, secundum illas tres exclamationes, quae fiunt in Canticis canticorum . Quarum prima fit per abundantiam devotionis, per quam fit anima sicut virgula fumi ex aromatibus, myrrhae et thuris : secunda per excellentiam admirationis, per quam fit anima sicut aurora, luna et sol , secundum processum illuminationum suspendentium animam ad admirandum sponsum consideratum;
For in this degree, the interior senses being repaired to sense the supremely beautiful, to hear the supremely harmonious, to smell the supremely fragrant, to taste the supremely sweet, to apprehend the supremely delightful, the soul is disposed to mental ecstasies—namely through devotion, admiration and exultation—according to those three exclamations which occur in the Song of Songs. Of which the first occurs through abundance of devotion, by which the soul becomes 'like a column of smoke from the spices of myrrh and frankincense'; the second through excellence of admiration, by which the soul becomes 'like the dawn, the moon and the sun', according to the progress of the illuminations which suspend the soul in admiration of the bridegroom contemplated;
因為在這等級裡,內在的感官既被修復,得以感受那至美者、聽見那至和諧者、嗅那至馨香者、嚐那至甘甜者、領會那至可悅者,魂便預備好進入心靈的超拔——就是藉著虔敬、驚嘆與歡騰——按那《雅歌》中出現的三聲呼喊。其中第一聲是藉虔敬的豐盛而發,魂藉此「成為從沒藥乳香的香料而升的煙柱」;第二聲是藉驚嘆的卓越而發,魂藉此「如晨曦、如月亮、如太陽」,這是按那些照耀的進程,使魂懸於對所觀想之新郎的驚嘆中;
1:76
the third through the superabundance of exultation, by which the soul becomes overflowing with the most delicious delights of pleasure, leaning wholly upon her beloved. 4. These things being attained, our spirit is made hierarchical for ascending upward in conformity to that supernal Jerusalem, into which no one enters unless first it descend into the heart by grace, as John saw in his Apocalypse. Now it then descends into the heart, when, through the reformation of the image, through the theological virtues, through the delights of the spiritual senses and the suspensions of ecstasies, our spirit is made hierarchical, namely purged, illuminated and perfected.
1:77
- Sic etiam gradibus novem ordinum insignitur, dum ordinate in eo interius disponitur nuntiatio, dictatio, ductio, ordinatio, roboratio, imperatio, susceptio, revelatio, unctio, quae gradatim correspondent novem ordinibus Angelorum, ita quod primi trium praedictorum gradus respiciunt in mente humana naturam, tres sequentes industriam, et tres postremi gratiam. Quibus habitis, anima intrando in se ipsam, intrat in supremam Ierusalem, ubi ordines Angelorum considerans, videt in eis Deum, qui habitans in eis omnes eorum operatur operationes.
—Thus it is also marked with the steps of the nine orders, when there are orderly disposed within it: annunciation, dictation, leading, ordering, strengthening, command, reception, revelation, anointing, which correspond step by step to the nine orders of Angels, so that the first three of the aforesaid steps regard, in the human mind, nature, the next three diligence, and the last three grace. These being had, the soul, entering into itself, enters into the supreme Jerusalem, where, considering the orders of Angels, it sees in them God, who, dwelling in them, works all their operations.
Hence Bernard says to Eugene that 'God in the Seraphim loves as charity, in the Cherubim knows as truth, in the Thrones sits as equity, in the Dominations rules as majesty, in the Principalities governs as principle, in the Powers guards as salvation, in the Virtues works as virtue, in the Archangels reveals as light, in the Angels assists as piety.' From all of which God is seen to be all in all through contemplation of Him in the minds in which He dwells through the gifts of most overflowing charity. 5. Now to this degree of speculation the consideration of Sacred Scripture, divinely sent in, especially and chiefly lends help, just as philosophy does to the preceding.
1:79
Sacra enim Scriptura principaliter est de operibus reparationis. Unde et ipsa praecipue agit de fide, spe et caritate, per quas virtutes habet anima reformari, et specialissime de caritate. De qua dicit Apostolus, quod est finis praecepti , secundum quod est in corde puro et conscientia bona et fide non ficta . Ipsa est plenitudo Legis , ut dicit idem. Et Salvator noster asserit, totam Legem Prophetasque pendere in duobus praeceptis eiusdem, scilicet dilectione Dei et proximi;
For Sacred Scripture is principally about the works of restoration. Hence it too treats chiefly of faith, hope and charity, by which virtues the soul has to be reformed, and most especially of charity. Of which the Apostle says that it is 'the end of the commandment', inasmuch as it is 'from a pure heart and a good conscience and faith unfeigned'. It is 'the fullness of the Law', as the same says. And our Savior asserts that the whole Law and the Prophets hang upon two commandments of the same, namely the love of God and of neighbor;
因為聖經主要是關於救贖修復的工作。因此它也主要論及信、望、愛,魂須藉這些德行得以重塑,尤其特別論及愛。論到愛,使徒說它是「誡命的總歸」,因它是「出於清潔的心、無虧的良心和無偽的信」。如同他所說,它是「律法的完全」。我們的救主也斷言,全部律法和先知都繫於同一律法的兩條誡命,就是愛神與愛鄰舍;
1:80
quae duo innuuntur in uno sponso Ecclesiae Iesu Christo, qui simul est proximus et Deus, simul frater et dominus, simul etiam rex et amicus, simul Verbum increatum et incarnatum, formator noster et reformator, ut alpha et omega ; qui etiam summus hierarcha est, purgans et illuminans et perficiens sponsam, scilicet totam Ecclesiam et quamlibet animam sanctam. 6. De hoc igitur hierarcha et ecclesiastica hierarchia est tota sacra Scriptura, per quam docemur purgari, illuminari et perfici, et hoc secundum triplicem legem in ea traditam, scilicet naturae, Scripturae et gratiae;
which two are signified in the one bridegroom of the Church, Jesus Christ, who is at once neighbor and God, at once brother and lord, at once also king and friend, at once the Word uncreated and incarnate, our former and reformer, as Alpha and Omega; who is also the supreme hierarch, purging, illuminating and perfecting the bride, namely the whole Church and every holy soul. 6. Concerning this hierarch and the ecclesiastical hierarchy, therefore, is the whole of Sacred Scripture, by which we are taught to be purged, illuminated and perfected, and this according to the threefold law handed down in it, namely of nature, of Scripture and of grace;
這兩條誡命在教會唯一的新郎耶穌基督身上得著表記,祂同時是鄰舍與神,同時是弟兄與主,也同時是君王與朋友,同時是非受造與成肉身的道,是塑造我們者與重塑我們者,如同阿拉法與俄梅戛;祂也是那至高的層級之首(總管者),潔淨、光照、成全那新婦,就是全教會與每一個聖潔的魂。6. 所以,全部聖經乃是關於這位層級之首與教會的層級體系,我們藉它受教,得以被潔淨、被光照、被成全,而這是按其中所傳的三重律法,就是本性、聖經與恩典之律;
1:81
vel potius secundum triplicem eius partem principalem, legem scilicet Moysaicam purgantem, revelationem propheticam illustrantem et eruditionem evangelicam perficientem; vel potissimum secundum triplicem eius intelligentiam spiritualem: tropologicam quae purgat ad honestatem vitae; allegoricam, quae illuminat ad claritatem intelligentiae;
or rather according to its threefold principal part, namely the Mosaic law that purges, the prophetic revelation that illumines, and the evangelical instruction that perfects; or most of all according to its threefold spiritual understanding: the tropological, which purges unto honesty of life; the allegorical, which illumines unto clarity of understanding;
或更確切地說,是按其三個主要部分,就是潔淨的摩西律法、光照的先知啟示,與成全的福音教導;或最主要地,是按其三重屬靈的悟解:道德意義(tropologica,比喻指導意義),它潔淨人歸於生活的端正;寓意意義(allegorica),它光照人歸於悟性的明亮;
1:82
the anagogical, which perfects through mental ecstasies and the most sweet perceptions of wisdom, according to the three aforementioned theological virtues and the reformed spiritual senses and the three aforesaid ecstasies and the hierarchical acts of the mind, by which our mind returns to interior things, that there it may behold God in the splendors of the Saints, and in those same splendors, as in resting-chambers, may sleep in peace and rest, the bridegroom adjuring that it be not awakened until it proceed by His will. 7.
Now from these two middle degrees, by which we enter to contemplate God within us as in the mirrors of created images—and this as it were after the manner of wings spread out for flying, which held the middle place—we can understand that in divine things we are led by the hand through the powers of the rational soul itself, naturally implanted, as regards their operations, dispositions and scientific habits; as appears from the third degree. We are also led by the hand through the reformed powers of the soul itself, and this by the gratuitous virtues, the spiritual senses and the mental ecstasies; as is evident from the fourth.
1:84
Manuducimur nihilominus per hierarchicas operationes, scilicet purgationis, illuminationis et perfectionis mentium humanarum, per hierarchicas revelationes sacrarum Scripturarum nobis per Angelos datarum, secundum illud Apostoli, quod Lex data est per Angelos in manu Mediatoris . Et tandem manuducimur per hierarchias et hierarchicos ordines, qui in mente nostra disponi habent ad instar supernae Ierusalem. 8. Quibus omnibus luminibus intellectualibus mens nostra repleta, a divina Sapientia tanquam domus Dei inhabitatur, effecta Dei filia, sponsa et amica; effecta Christi capitis membrum, soror et coheres;
We are nonetheless led by the hand through the hierarchical operations, namely of purgation, illumination and perfection of human minds, through the hierarchical revelations of the Sacred Scriptures given to us by the Angels, according to that saying of the Apostle, that the Law was given by Angels in the hand of a Mediator. And finally we are led by the hand through the hierarchies and hierarchical orders, which have to be arranged in our mind after the likeness of the supernal Jerusalem. 8. Our mind, filled with all these intellectual lights, is inhabited by divine Wisdom as the house of God, made the daughter, bride and friend of God; made a member of Christ the head, His sister and coheir;
我們仍然藉著那有層級秩序的運作——就是對人心思的潔淨、光照與成全——被牽引,藉著天使所賜給我們之聖經那有層級秩序的啟示,正如使徒所言,律法是藉天使、在中保的手中設立的。最終,我們也藉著那些層級體系與層級的等級被牽引,這些須照那屬天耶路撒冷的樣式被安排於我們的心思中。8. 我們的心思被這一切悟性之光充滿,便被神聖的智慧所居住,如同神的家,成為神的女兒、新婦與朋友;成為元首基督的肢體、祂的姊妹與同承嗣業者;
1:85
made nonetheless the temple of the Holy Spirit, founded by faith, raised up by hope and dedicated to God by holiness of mind and body. All of which the most sincere charity of Christ effects, which is poured forth in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us, without which Spirit we cannot know the secret things of God. For just as the things which are of man no one can know but the spirit of man which is in him, so also the things which are of God no one knows but the Spirit of God. Let us therefore be rooted and grounded in charity, that we may be able to comprehend with all the Saints what is the length of eternity, what the breadth of liberality, what the sublimity of majesty and what the depth of the judging Wisdom. 1.
Now since it falls to us to contemplate God not only outside us and within us, but also above us—outside through vestige, within through image, and above through the light of eternal Truth, since 'our very mind is immediately formed by Truth itself'—those who have been exercised in the first mode have already entered into the court before the tabernacle; those, however, in the second, have entered into the holy place; while those in the third enter with the high priest into the holy of holies; where above the ark are the Cherubim of glory overshadowing the propitiatory; by which we understand two modes or degrees of contemplating the invisible and eternal things of God, of which one is concerned with the essential attributes of God, the other with the proper attributes of the persons. 2.
Nemo , inquit, bonus nisi solus Deus .
The first mode first and principally fixes its gaze upon being itself, saying that 'He who is' is the first name of God. The second mode fixes its gaze upon the good itself, saying that this is the first name of God. The first regards most fittingly the Old Testament, which especially proclaims the unity of the divine essence; whence it was said to Moses: 'I am who am.' The second regards the New, which determines the plurality of persons, baptizing in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Therefore our Master Christ, wishing to raise the young man who had kept the Law to evangelical perfection, attributed the name of goodness to God principally and precisely. 'No one,' He says, 'is good but God alone.'
Damascene, therefore, following Moses, says that 'He who is' is the first name of God; Dionysius, following Christ, says that 'the good' is the first name of God. 3. He, therefore, who wishes to contemplate the invisible things of God as regards the unity of the essence, let him first fix his gaze upon being itself, and let him see that being itself is so most certain in itself that it cannot be thought not to be, because the most pure being does not present itself except in the full flight from non-being, just as nothing does in the full flight from being. As, therefore, utter nothing has nothing of being nor of its conditions; so, on the contrary, being itself has nothing of non-being, neither in act nor in potency, neither according to the truth of the thing nor according to our estimation.
Now since non-being is the privation of being, it does not fall within the intellect except through being; but being does not fall within it through another, for everything that is understood is understood either as non-being, or as being in potency, or as being in act. If, therefore, non-being cannot be understood except through being, and being in potency only through being in act; and 'being' names the very pure act of a being: therefore being is what first falls within the intellect, and that being is what is pure act. But this is not particular being, which is analogous being, because it has the least of act, in that it least is. It remains, therefore, that that being is the divine being. 4.
1:90
Mira igitur est caecitas intellectus, qui non considerat illud quod prius videt et sine quo nihil potest cognoscere. Sed sicut oculus intentus in varias colorum differentias lucem, per quam videt cetera, non videt, et si videt, non advertit; sic oculus mentes nostrae, intentus in entia particularia et universalia, ipsum esse extra omne genus, licet primo occurrat menti, et per ipsum alia, tamen non advertit. Unde verissime apparet, quod "sicut oculus vespertilionis se habet ad lucem, ita se habet oculus mentis nostrae ad manifestissima naturae"; quia assuefactus ad tenebras entium et phantasmata sensibilium, cum ipsam lucem summi esse intuetur, videtur sibi nihil videre;
Wondrous, therefore, is the blindness of the intellect, which does not consider that which it sees first and without which it can know nothing. But just as the eye, intent upon the various differences of colors, does not see the light through which it sees all the rest—and if it does see it, takes no notice of it—so the eye of our mind, intent upon particular and universal beings, does not advert to Being itself, which lies beyond every genus, even though it is the first thing to present itself to the mind and through it all other things are known. Hence it appears most truly that 'as the eye of the bat is disposed toward the light, so is the eye of our mind disposed toward the most manifest things of nature'; for, accustomed to the darkness of beings and to the phantasms of sensible things, when it gazes upon the very light of the supreme Being, it seems to itself to see nothing;
因此,理智的盲目實在令人驚奇:它竟不思考那它最先所見、且沒有它便一無所知的對象。然而正如眼睛專注於各種顏色的差異,卻看不見那使它得以看見其餘一切的光,縱使看見也不留意;我們心靈之眼亦然,專注於個別與普遍的存有,卻不留意那超越一切類別的「存有」本身,雖然它最先呈現於心靈、並藉著它而認識其他一切。由此最真確地顯明:「正如蝙蝠的眼睛之於光,我們心靈之眼亦如此之於自然界最顯明的事物」;因為它習慣了眾存有的幽暗與可感事物的幻象,當它凝視至高存有之光本身時,便覺得自己彷彿一無所見;
1:91
not understanding that that very darkness is the supreme illumination of our mind, just as, when the eye sees pure light, it seems to itself to see nothing. 5. Behold, therefore, the most pure Being itself, if you can, and it will occur to you that it cannot be thought of as received from another; and thereby it is of necessity thought of as in every way first, which can come neither from nothing nor from anything. For what is through itself, if Being itself is not through itself nor from itself? It will also occur to you as wholly lacking non-being, and thereby as never beginning, never ceasing, but eternal. It will also occur to you as having nothing in itself except that which is Being itself, and thereby as composed of nothing, but most simple.
1:92
Occurrit tibi ut nihil habens possibilitatis, quia omne possibile aliquo modo habet aliquid de non-esse , ac per hoc ut summe actualissimum. Occurrit ut nihil habens defectibilitatis, ac per hoc ut perfectissimum. Occurrit postremo ut nihil habens diversificationis, ac per hoc summe unum. Esse igitur, quod est esse purum et esse simpliciter et esse absolutum, est esse primarium, aeternum, simplicissimum, actualissimum, perfectissimum et summe unum. 6. Et sunt haec ita certa,quod non potest ab intelligente ipsum esse cogitari horum oppositum, et unum necessario infert aliud. Nam quia simpliciter est esse , ideo simpliciter primum;
It will occur to you as having nothing of possibility, since everything possible in some way has something of non-being, and thereby as supremely most actual. It will occur as having nothing of defectibility, and thereby as most perfect. It will occur, lastly, as having nothing of diversity, and thereby as supremely one. Being, therefore, which is pure being and being absolutely and being unconditioned, is primary being, eternal, most simple, most actual, most perfect, and supremely one. 6. And these things are so certain that one who understands Being itself cannot think the opposite of them, and each necessarily implies the other. For because it is being absolutely, it is therefore absolutely first;
它會向你顯現為毫無潛能,因為一切可能者多少都含有某種非有,由此乃是至高至實在者。它會顯現為毫無可缺性,由此乃是至完美者。它最後會顯現為毫無差異性,由此乃是至高的「一」。所以,那作為純然的存有、絕對的存有、無待的存有者,乃是太初的存有、永恆的、至為單純的、至為實在的、至完美的、至高為一的。六、而這些是如此確定,以致凡領會「存有」本身的人,都不能設想其相反者,且每一項都必然推出另一項。因為它絕對地存在,所以絕對地居首;
1:93
Quia primum, aeternum, simplicissimum, actualissimum perfectissimum; ideo summe unum.
because absolutely first, it is therefore not made by another, nor could it be by itself, and so it is eternal. Likewise, because first and eternal, it is therefore not from other things, and so most simple. Again, because first, eternal, and most simple, there is therefore nothing of possibility in it mixed with act, and so it is most actual. Again, because first, eternal, most simple, most actual, it is therefore most perfect; to such a being nothing whatever is lacking, nor can any addition be made. Because first, eternal, most simple, most actual, most perfect, it is therefore supremely one. For that which is said by reason of an all-encompassing superabundance with respect to all things—'whatever is said absolutely by superabundance, it is impossible that it should belong to any but one alone.'
Hence, if 'God' names primary being, eternal, most simple, most actual, most perfect, it is impossible that it be thought not to be, or to be other than one alone. Hear, therefore, O Israel, the Lord thy God is one God. If you see this in the pure simplicity of the mind, you will in some measure be flooded with the illumination of the eternal light. 7. But you have grounds to be lifted up into wonder. For Being itself is first and last, it is eternal and most present, it is most simple and greatest, it is most actual and most immutable, it is most perfect and immense, it is supremely one and yet all-embracing. If you marvel at these things with a pure mind, you will be flooded with greater light, when you see further that it is last precisely because it is first.
For because it is first, it works all things for its own sake; and therefore it must of necessity be the ultimate end, the beginning and the consummation, the Alpha and the Omega. Therefore it is most present, because it is eternal. For because it is eternal, it does not flow from another, nor fail from itself, nor run from one thing into another; therefore it has neither past nor future, but only present being. Therefore it is greatest, because most simple. For because it is most actual, it is therefore pure act; and what is such acquires nothing new, loses nothing it has, and thereby cannot be changed. Therefore it is immense, because most perfect. For because it is most perfect, nothing better, nobler, or more worthy can be thought beyond it, and thereby nothing greater; and everything of this kind is immense.
1:96
Ideo omnimodum, quia summe unum.
Therefore it is all-embracing, because supremely one. For that which is supremely one is the universal principle of all multitude; and thereby it is itself the universal efficient, exemplary, and final cause of all things, as 'the cause of being, the ground of understanding, and the order of living.' It is therefore all-embracing, not as the essence of all things, but as the most superexcellent and most universal cause of all essences; whose power, because it is supremely unified in essence, is therefore supremely infinite and manifold in efficacy. 8. Returning again, let us say: because, therefore, the most pure and absolute being, which is being simply, is first and last,
1:97
Quia aeternum et praesentissimum, ideo omnes durationes ambit et intrat, quasi simul existens earum centrum et circumferentia. Quia simplicissimum, ideo totum intra omnis et totum extra, ac per hoc "est sphaera intelligibilis, cuius centrum est ubique et circumferentia nusquam". Quia actualissimum et immutabilissimum, ideo "stabile manens moveri dat universa". Quia perfectissimum et immensum, ideo est intra omnia, non inclusum, extra omnia, non exclusum, supra omnia, non elatum, infra omnia, non prostratum. Quia vero est summe unum et omnimodum, ideo est omnia in omnibus. quamvis omnia sint multa et ipsum non sit nisi unum;
because eternal and most present, it therefore encompasses and enters all durations, as if existing at once as their center and circumference. Because most simple, it is therefore wholly within all things and wholly outside them, and thereby 'it is an intelligible sphere whose center is everywhere and whose circumference is nowhere.' Because most actual and most immutable, it therefore 'remaining stable, gives movement to all things.' Because most perfect and immense, it is therefore within all things, not enclosed; outside all things, not excluded; above all things, not lifted up; below all things, not cast down. But because it is supremely one and all-embracing, it is therefore all in all, although all things are many and it is but one;
因為它是永恆且至為臨在的,故環繞並進入一切時段,彷彿同時是它們的中心與圓周。因為至為單純,故全然在萬物之內、又全然在萬物之外,由此「乃是一個可理解的球體,其中心無處不在,其圓周無處可尋」。因為至為實在且至為不變,故「自身安然不動,卻賜運動於萬有」。因為至完美且無量,故在萬物之內而不被包圍,在萬物之外而不被排斥,在萬物之上而不被高舉,在萬物之下而不被貶抑。又因為它是至高為一且無所不包,故是「萬有中的萬有」,雖然萬物眾多而它唯獨是一;
1:98
and this because, through its most simple unity, its most serene truth, there is all exemplarity and all communicability; and thereby, from it and through it and in it are all things; and this because it is omnipotent, omniscient, and in every way good, which to see perfectly is to be blessed, as was said to Moses: I will show thee all good. 1. After the consideration of the essential attributes, the eye of the understanding is to be raised to the contemplation of the most blessed Trinity, so that the one Cherub may be set beside the other. But just as in the vision of the essential attributes Being itself is the radical principle and the name by which the rest are made known, so in the contemplation of the emanations the Good itself is the most principal foundation. 2.
Behold, therefore, and attend, since the best is that which simply is, than which nothing better can be thought; and such a being is so that it cannot rightly be thought not to be, because to be is altogether better than not to be; it is so that it cannot rightly be thought without being thought as three and one. For 'the good is said to be self-diffusive'; the supreme good, therefore, is supremely self-diffusive. But supreme diffusion cannot be unless it is actual and intrinsic, substantial and hypostatic, natural and voluntary, free and necessary, unfailing and perfect.
Unless, therefore, there were in the supreme Good an eternal production, actual and consubstantial, and a hypostasis equally noble as the producing one, by way of generation and spiration—so that there is an eternal co-principle of an eternal principle eternally co-originating—so that there should be a beloved and a co-beloved, a begotten and a spirated, that is, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit; it would by no means be the supreme Good, because it would not diffuse itself supremely. For diffusion in time in a creature is but central or punctual in comparison with the immensity of the eternal goodness; whence too a diffusion greater than that can be thought, namely one in which the diffuser communicates to another its whole substance and nature.
1:101
Therefore it would not be the supreme Good if it could lack this, whether in reality or in understanding. If, therefore, you can behold with the mind's eye the purity of goodness, which is the pure act of a principle loving in charity with a love both gratuitous and due and mingled of both—which is the most full diffusion by way of nature and of will, which is the diffusion by way of the Word in whom all things are spoken, and by way of the Gift in whom all other gifts are given—you can see that, through the supreme communicability of the good, the Trinity of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit must necessarily be.
In whom there must necessarily be, on account of the supreme goodness, the supreme communicability, and from the supreme communicability the supreme consubstantiality, and from the supreme consubstantiality the supreme configurability, and from these the supreme co-equality, and thereby the supreme co-eternity, and from all the aforesaid the supreme co-intimacy, by which one is necessarily in the other through the supreme circumincession, and one operates with the other through the all-embracing indivision of substance and power and operation of the most blessed Trinity itself. 3. But when you contemplate these things, see that you do not deem yourself to comprehend the incomprehensible.
1:103
Habes enim adhuc in his sex conditionibus considerare quod vehementer in stuporem admirationis inducit oculum mentis nostrae. Nam ibi est summa communicabilitas cum personarum propritate, summa consubstantialitas cum hypostasum pluralitate, summa configurabilitas cum discreta personalitate, summa coaequalitas cum ordine, summa coaeternitas cum emanatione, summa cointimitas cum emissione. Quis ad tantorum mirabilium aspectum non consurgat in admirationem? Sed haec omnia certissime intelligimus esse in beatissima Trinitate, si levamus oculos ad superexcellentissimam bonitatem. Si enim ibi est summa communicatio et vera diffusio, vera est ibi origo et vera distinctio;
For you have still in these six conditions something to consider which vehemently leads the eye of our mind into the stupor of wonder. For there is supreme communicability with property of the persons, supreme consubstantiality with plurality of the hypostases, supreme configurability with distinct personality, supreme co-equality with order, supreme co-eternity with emanation, supreme co-intimacy with emission. Who, at the sight of such marvels, would not rise up in wonder? But all these things we understand most certainly to be in the most blessed Trinity, if we lift our eyes to the most superexcellent goodness. For if there is there supreme communication and true diffusion, there is there true origin and true distinction;
因為在這六項條件中,你尚有可思考之處,足以強烈地將我們心靈之眼引入驚奇的駭異。因為那裡有至高的可傳通性與位格的特性,至高的同質性與位格的眾多,至高的可肖似性與分明的位格,至高的同等性與次序,至高的共永性與流溢,至高的相互內存與發出。誰見了如此奇妙的景象,能不起而驚奇呢?然而我們最確切地明白:這一切都在至福三位一體中,只要我們將眼目舉向那至為超卓的美善。因為若那裡有至高的傳通與真實的傾流,那裡便有真實的根源與真實的區別;
1:104
and because the whole is communicated, not a part, therefore that which is possessed is given, and the whole: hence the one emanating and the one producing are both distinguished by properties, and are essentially one. Because, therefore, they are distinguished by properties, they have personal properties and a plurality of hypostases and an emanation of origin and an order not of posteriority but of origin, and an emission not of local change but of gratuitous inspiration, by reason of the authority of the one producing, which the sender has with respect to the one sent. But because they are substantially one, there must therefore be unity in essence and form and dignity and eternity and existence and incircumscriptibility.
While, therefore, you consider these things one by one in themselves, you have whereby to contemplate truth; while you compare them with one another, you have whereby to be suspended in the highest wonder: and therefore, that your mind may by wonder ascend into wonderful contemplation, these things are to be considered together. 4. For the Cherubim also signify this, who looked one upon the other. Nor is it without mystery that they looked toward each other with faces turned toward the mercy-seat, so that what the Lord says in John may be verified: This is eternal life, that they may know thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.
1:106
Nam admirari debemus non solum conditiones Dei essentiales et personales in se, verum etiam per comparationem ad supermirabilem unionem Dei et hominis in unitate personae Christi. 5. Si enim Cherub es essentialia Dei contemplando, et miraris, quia simul est divinum esse primum et novissimum, aeternum et praesentissimum, simplicissimum et maximum seu incircumscriptum, totum ubique et nunquam comprehensum, actualissimum et nunquam motum, perfectissimum et nihil habens superfluum nec diminutum, et tamen immensum et sine termino infinitum, summe unum, et tamen omnimodum, ut omnia si se habens, ut omnis virtus, omnis veritas, omne bonum;
For we ought to marvel not only at the essential and personal conditions of God in themselves, but also by comparison with the most wonderful union of God and man in the unity of the person of Christ. 5. For if you are a Cherub contemplating the essential attributes of God, and you marvel that the divine being is at once first and last, eternal and most present, most simple and greatest or uncircumscribed, wholly everywhere and never comprehended, most actual and never moved, most perfect and having nothing superfluous nor diminished, and yet immense and bounded by no limit, supremely one and yet all-embracing, as containing all things in itself, as all power, all truth, all good;
因為我們應當驚嘆的,不僅是神在祂自身的本質與位格的諸般情狀,更是藉著對比於那在基督位格之合一中神與人至為奇妙的聯合。五、因為若你是默觀神之本質屬性的基路伯,你驚嘆於那神性的存有同時是首與末、永恆與至為臨在、至為單純與至大或不受限、全然無所不在而從不被領悟、至為實在而從不被推動、至完美而毫無多餘或欠缺,然而又是無量且無界限地無限、至高為一卻又無所不包,因為它在自身中含有萬物,乃是一切能力、一切真理、一切美善;
1:107
look toward the mercy-seat and marvel that in it the first principle is joined with the last, God with man formed on the sixth day, the eternal is joined with man in time, born of the Virgin in the fullness of time, the most simple with the supremely composite, the most actual with the one who suffered supremely and died, the most perfect and immense with the lowly, the supremely one and all-embracing with an individual composite distinct from all others, namely the man Jesus Christ. 6.
1:108
Si autem alter Cherub es personarum propria contemplando, et miraris, communicabilitatem esse cum proprietate, consubstantialitatem cum pluralitate, configurabilitatem cum personalitate, coaequalitatem cum ordine, coaeternitatem cum productione, cointimitatem cum emissione, quia Filius missus est a Patre, et Spiritus sanctus ab utroque, qui tamen semper est cum eis et nunquam recedit ab eis; respice in propitiatorium et mirare, quia in Christo stat personalis unio cum trinitate substantiarum et naturarum dualitate;
But if you are the other Cherub contemplating the properties of the persons, and you marvel that communicability is with property, consubstantiality with plurality, configurability with personality, co-equality with order, co-eternity with production, co-intimacy with emission—since the Son is sent by the Father, and the Holy Spirit by both, who nevertheless is always with them and never departs from them—look upon the mercy-seat and marvel that in Christ there stands a personal union with a trinity of substances and a duality of natures;
然而若你是默觀位格諸特性的另一基路伯,你驚嘆於可傳通性與特性並存、同質性與眾多並存、可肖似性與位格並存、同等性與次序並存、共永性與產生並存、相互內存與發出並存——因聖子由聖父所差遣,聖靈由二者所差遣,然而祂始終與祂們同在、從不離開祂們——請望向施恩座,並驚嘆於:在基督裡,位格的合一與三實體並存、與兩本性並存;
1:109
there stands an all-embracing concord with a plurality of wills, there stands the joint predication of God and man with a plurality of properties, there stands a joint adoration with a plurality of nobilities, there stands a joint exaltation above all things with a plurality of dignities, there stands a joint dominion with a plurality of powers. 7. In this consideration is the perfection of the mind's illumination, when, as on the sixth day, it sees man made to the image of God.
For if an image is an expressive likeness, when our mind contemplates in Christ the Son of God—who is by nature the image of the invisible God—our humanity so wondrously exalted, so ineffably united, seeing at once in one the first and the last, the highest and the lowest, the circumference and the center, the Alpha and the Omega, the caused and the cause, the Creator and the creature, that is, the book written within and without; then it has already arrived at a certain perfect thing, so that together with God it may, in the sixth degree as on the sixth day, reach the perfection of its illuminations, and nothing further now remains but the day of rest, on which, through a transport of the mind, the keenness of the human mind may rest from every work that it had wrought. 1.
1:111
His igitur sex considerationibus excursis tanquam sex gradibus throni veri Salomonis, quibus pervenitur ad pacem, ubi verus pacificus in mente pacifica tanquam in interiori Hierosolyma requiescit; tanquam etiam sex alis Cherub, quibus mens veri contemplativi plena illustratione supernae sapientiae valeat sursum agi; tanquam etiam sex diebus primis, in quibus mens exercitari habet, ut tandem perveniat ad sabbatum quietis; postquam mens nostra contuita est Deum extra se per vestigia et in vestigiis, intra se per imaginem et in imagine, supra se per divinae lucis similitudinem super nos relucentem et in ipsa luce, secundum quod possibile est secundum statum viae et exercitium mentis nostrae;
Having therefore run through these six considerations as through six steps of the throne of the true Solomon, by which one comes to peace, where the true peaceful one rests in the peaceful mind as in the interior Jerusalem; as also through the six wings of the Cherub, by which the mind of the true contemplative, filled with the illumination of heavenly wisdom, may be borne aloft; as also through the six first days, in which the mind must be exercised, that at length it may come to the Sabbath of rest; after our mind has beheld God outside itself through vestiges and in vestiges, within itself through the image and in the image, above itself through the likeness of the divine light shining over us and in that very light, according as is possible in the state of the wayfarer and the exercise of our mind;
因此既然已經走過這六項思考,如同走過真所羅門寶座的六級臺階,藉之而達致平安,在那裡真正的和平者安息於和平的心靈中,如在內在的耶路撒冷;又如同藉著基路伯的六翼,使真正默觀者的心靈,充滿屬天智慧的光照,得以被高舉而上;又如同藉著起初的六日,心靈須在其中操練,好叫它終得進入安息的安息日;在我們的心靈藉著痕跡、並在痕跡之中於自身之外觀看了神,藉著形像、並在形像之中於自身之內觀看了神,藉著照於我們之上的神光之肖似、並在那光之中於自身之上觀看了神之後——這都是按朝聖之境與我們心靈的操練所可能達到的;
1:112
when, in the sixth degree, it has come to this, that it may behold in the first and supreme principle and mediator of God and men, Jesus Christ, those things the likeness of which can in no way be found in creatures, and which exceed all the keenness of the human intellect: it remains that, beholding these, it should transcend and pass over not only this sensible world, but even itself; in which passing over Christ is the way and the door, Christ is the ladder and the vehicle, as it were the mercy-seat placed above the ark of God and the sacrament hidden from the ages. 2.
Whoever looks toward this mercy-seat with full turning of his face, gazing upon Him hanging on the cross through faith, hope, and charity, devotion, wonder, exultation, appreciation, praise, and jubilation, makes the Pasch with Him, that is, the passover, so that through the rod of the cross he may pass over the Red Sea, going from Egypt and entering the desert, where he may taste the hidden manna, and rest with Christ in the tomb as if outwardly dead, yet feeling, so far as is possible in the state of the wayfarer, what was said on the cross to the thief cleaving to Christ: This day thou shalt be with me in paradise. 3.
This was also shown to blessed Francis, when in a transport of contemplation on a lofty mountain—where I pondered in my mind these things which have been written—there appeared a six-winged Seraph fixed to a cross, as I and several others heard there from his companion who was then with him; where he passed over into God through the transport of contemplation; and he was set forth as an example of perfect contemplation, just as before he had been of action, like another Jacob and Israel, so that through him God might invite all truly spiritual men to this kind of passing over and transport of mind more by example than by word. 4.
1:115
In hoc autem transitu, si sit perfectus, oportet quod relinquantur omnes intellectuales operationes, et apex affectus totus transferatur et transformetur in Deum. Hoc autem est mysticum et secretissimum, quod nemo novit, nisi qui accipit , nec accipit nisi qui desiderat, nec desiderat nisi quem ignis Spiritus sancti medullitus inflammat, quem Christus misit in terram. Et ideo dicit Apostolus, hanc mysticam sapientiam esse per Spiritum sanctum revelatam. 5. Quoniam igitur ad hoc nihil potest natura, modicum potest industria, parum est dandum inquisitioni, et multum unctioni; parum dandum est linguae, et plurimum internae laetitiae;
But in this passing over, if it is to be perfect, it is necessary that all intellectual operations be left behind, and that the whole height of affection be transferred and transformed into God. This, however, is mystical and most secret, which no one knows except him who receives it, nor does anyone receive it except him who desires it, nor does anyone desire it except him whom the fire of the Holy Spirit, which Christ sent into the earth, inflames to the marrow. And therefore the Apostle says that this mystical wisdom is revealed through the Holy Spirit. 5. Since, therefore, nature can do nothing toward this, and effort can do little, little is to be given to inquiry and much to unction; little is to be given to the tongue and very much to interior joy;
然而在這越過中,若要臻於完全,必須撇下一切理智的運作,並將情感之巔全然移轉並變化於神。然而這乃是奧祕而至為隱密的,無人知曉,惟有領受者;也無人領受,惟有渴慕者;也無人渴慕,惟有被聖靈之火——基督所差入地上的——徹骨點燃者。故此使徒說,這奧祕的智慧是藉聖靈所啟示的。五、因此,既然本性對此一無所能、勤勞所能甚微,便當少倚賴探究而多倚賴傅膏;少倚賴口舌而多倚賴內在的喜樂;
1:116
parum dandum est verbo et scripto, et totum Dei dono, scilicet Spiritui sancto; parum aut nihil dandum est creaturae, et totum creatrici essentiae, Patri et Filio et Spiritui sancto, dicendo cum Dionysio ad Deum Trinitatem: "Trinitas superessentialis et superdeus et superoptime Christianorum inspector theosophiae, dirige nos in mysticorum eloquiorum superincognitum et superlucentem et sublimissimum verticem;
little is to be given to word and writing, and all to the gift of God, namely the Holy Spirit; little or nothing is to be given to the creature, and all to the creative essence, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, saying with Dionysius to the Triune God: 'O Trinity superessential and superdivine and supremely good overseer of the Christians' divine wisdom, direct us into the super-unknown and super-shining and most sublime summit of the mystical sayings;
少倚賴言語與文字,而全然倚賴神的恩賜,即聖靈;對受造物當少給或全不給,而全然歸於那創造的本質,即聖父、聖子與聖靈,同戴奧尼修向三一神說:「噢,超本質、超神聖、至善的三位一體,基督徒屬神智慧的監臨者啊,求你引導我們進入那超乎所知、超乎光輝、至為崇高的奧祕言語之巔峰;
1:117
where the new and absolute and unchangeable mysteries of theology are hidden in secret, according to the super-shining darkness of the silence that secretly teaches, in the most obscure, which is the most superlatively manifest, the most super-resplendent, and in which everything shines forth, and which super-fills the invisible intellects with the splendors of the invisible super-goods.' This to God. But to the friend for whom these things are written, let it be said with the same Dionysius: 'But thou, O friend, concerning mystical visions, with the journey strengthened, abandon both the senses and the intellectual operations, and the sensible and the invisible, and all non-being and being, and, as is possible, restore thyself unknowingly to the unity of Him who is above all essence and knowledge.
For by the immeasurable and absolute transport of a pure mind, freed from thyself and from all things, abandoning all things and loosed from all, thou shalt ascend to the superessential ray of the divine darkness.' 6. But if you ask how these things come about, ask grace, not doctrine; desire, not understanding; the groaning of prayer, not the study of reading; the Bridegroom, not the teacher; God, not man; darkness, not clarity; not light, but the fire that wholly inflames and bears one into God by ecstatic unctions and most ardent affections. Which fire indeed is God, and its furnace is in Jerusalem, and Christ kindles it in the fervor of His most ardent passion, which he alone truly perceives who says:
1:119
Amen.
My soul hath chosen hanging, and my bones death. Whoever loves this death can see God, for it is undoubtedly true: Man shall not see me and live. Let us die, therefore, and enter into the darkness; let us impose silence upon our cares, our desires, and our phantasms; let us pass over with Christ crucified from this world to the Father, so that, the Father being shown to us, we may say with Philip: It is enough for us; let us hear with Paul: My grace is sufficient for thee; let us exult with David, saying: My flesh and my heart have failed; thou art the God of my heart, and the God that is my portion forever. Blessed be the Lord forever, and let all the people say: So be it, so be it. Amen.
